President’s Report

President’s Report It’s been a big year for Thoroughbred Breeders NSW with a number of administrative and executive changes bringing new blood to the organisation as we enter our second century operating as an organisation acting in the interest of thoroughbred breeders across New South Wales. One of our biggest changes has been to relocate our office in January to the Hunter Valley Equine Research Centre in Scone, alongside new residents Racing Australia Equine Genetics Research Laboratory. In addition, the grand opening of the Inglis Riverside Sales Complex, was another high point to a successful sales season for our members this year with strong demand for high quality yearlings, weanlings and bloodstock once again proving that New South Wales is the source of Australia’s thoroughbred champions. Changes made to our board, included the resignation’s of President Mr Derek Field of Widden Stud and Mr Andrew Baddock of Gooree Park, we sincerely thank Derek for his 14 years of service with TBNSW including his 4 year term as dedicated President and Andrew for 8 years as committeeman. In replacement we are delighted to announce members Mr Olly Tait of Twin Hills Stud and Mr Vin Cox of Godolphin taking up casual appointments as committee members, the appointment of Hamish Esplin as Vice President and myself stepping into the role as President. Seminars we conducted in August provided much needed support and guidance to breeders, we thank the knowledge and support of everyone who gave up their time to run these seminars and for making those days such a highlight of the calendar year. The board has received feedback from members of other states’ organisations that attended having said they wished that they could repeat our seminars at home. We are indeed very lucky to have access to such experience and knowledge for all equine veterinary and husbandry matters in our great wstate the breeding capital of Australia. NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Spring/Summer 2018

Of course, we must recognise that 2018 brought some of the worst drought conditions in living memory which plagued most parts of the state. The community spirit and dedication in such trying circumstances is a testament to the determination and perseverance of all farmers across Australia and the strength of our agricultural bonds. This year we changed the way we conducted our award ceremonies traditionally held at stallion parades in the Hunter Valley and to our sponsors race day which held at Rosehill. Instead we hosted the inaugural TBNSW Directors Luncheon at Randwick on George Main Stakes Day in September 2018. A perfect fit to award our annual breeding champions at the birth of each new spring breeding season and racing carnivals. All who attended hailed the day a triumph as attendees witnessed history in the making with NSW Bred Champion ‘Winx’ marking 27 straight wins, an extraordinarily great day for the board and members to join in with ATC directors’ celebrations and welcoming our new and loyal major partnership sponsors.

In closing I would like again to congratulate our breeders for another successful NSW dominate year, Mr Les Young being awarded Life Membership of NSW Breeders and thank our new Executive Officer Mrs Julianne Christopher for her support services to our members. TBNSW and its board are committed to addressing concerns of breeders in relation to issues around; imposed regulations, welfare, research and development, education and skills shortages, furthering benefits to BOBS Bonuses implementing incentives to make breeding more financially viable for smaller breeders and encourage newcomers to the breeding industry. Once again we finish the year with a NSW bred horse being named as the highest rated horse of the year and we hope that our members can achieve lofty heights again in 2019. Wishing you all a safe and cheerful holiday season. Tom Kelly President

Wonderous Winx

Wondrous Winx steals the spring spotlight Les Young reviews the spring carnivals in Sydney and Melbourne

Champion Winx (Street Cry) boosted her profile even higher during the spring, putting racing on the front page of the nation’s newspapers and on TV news as she extended her record breaking sequence of wins. Returning to competition as a seven-year-old, the great mare proved to be as good as ever, if not better, as she progressed to her main spring target, an unprecedented fourth consecutive victory in the MVRC W.S. Cox Plate (Gr. 1, 2040m). Bred in NSW by John Camilleri’s Fairway Thoroughbreds, Winx resumed in what was the ATC Warwick Stakes (Gr. 1,1400m), now renamed the Winx Stakes, at Randwick on August 18 to record her 26th straight win and go past the record unbeaten tally of 25 set by another great mare, Black Caviar (Bel Esprit).

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Spring/Summer 2018

In the George Main Stakes (Gr.1, 1600m), sponsored by Optic White, Winx defeated underrated gelding Le Romain (Hard Spun) to record her 27th straight victory before going on to Melbourne for the VRC Turnbull Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m) at Flemington for her 28th consecutive win then winding up her spring campaign when outclassing Godolphin raider Benbatl (Dubawi), earlier successful in the 2018 MRC Caulfield Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m), in the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on October 27,This was her fourth win in Australia’s weight-for-age middle distance championship and her 29th straight win remarkably spread over five seasons. Winx now has the record of 39 starts for 33 wins and three seconds to return record earnings of $22,934,925 with more likely to come in the autumn before her expected retirement to stud.Timeform has awarded Winx a current rating of 129.

Older Sprinters The second running of the $13 million The Everest at Randwick on October 13, the world’s richest race run on turf, was the target of every owner and trainer of a top class sprinter in Australia and there was tremendous competition to gain one of only 12 available slots. Two contenders staked early claims on July 28 when Vega Magic (Lope de Vega), second last year, took the Bletchingly Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) in Melbourne and “talking horse” Nature Strip (Nicconi) won the SAJC Lightning Stakes (Listed, 1050m) then went on to take the Ian McEwen Stakes (Gr. 2,1000m) at Moonee Valley on September 8 with exhibitions of sheer speed. Inaugural winner of The Everest (1200m), Redzel (Snitzel), showed he was still a force with a first up success in the ATC Concorde Stakes (Gr. 3, 1000m) at Randwick on September 1 while other proven high quality performers like Trapeze Artist (Snitzel),Santa Ana Lane (Lope de Vega), Shoals (Fastnet Rock), Brave Smash (Tosen Phantom), In Her Time (Time Thief) and Viddora (I Am Invincible) also looked worthy of gaining a start. Trapeze Artist had two lead up runs for a third to Godolphin import Home of the Brave (Starspangledbanner) in the Theo Marks Stakes (Gr.2,

Redzel (Snitzel x Miklrich) 6

1300m) and a fourth to impressive winner Santa Ana Lane in the Premiere Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) at Randwick in which Shoals was second and In Her Time third. The final field for The Everest was of higher overall quality than any Graded sprint event during the spring and the race deserved Group 1 status but this is unfairly impossible under the Australian Pattern System. Champion Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien sent out his multiple Group 1 winner US Navy Flag (War Front) to provide some international competition for our best sprinters but sadly the Randwick track on raceday came up heavy and many fancied runners like US Navy Flag had their chances ruined leaving mudlark Redzel to repeat his win of a year earlier with a wonderful, front running display to defeat Trapeze Artist and Goldolphin’s strong finishing Osborne Bulls (Street Cry) with Le Romain fourth. With a current Timeform rating of 126, Redzel, later to finish fifth in the VRC Sprint Classic (Gr. 1,1200m) has won 14 races and placed seven times to earn for his large Triple Crown Syndicate of owners $15,397,000 which makes him second only to Winx among Australian prizemoney earners with

Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega x Fast Fleet)

both being graduates of the Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale. Osborne Bulls finished off his spring campaign with a stylish win in the VRC Linlithgow Stakes (Gr. 2, 1200m) so a Group 1 may come for him in the autumn. Santa Ana Lane, fifth in The Everest, was soon to show his appreciation of firmer going by winning the VRC Sprint Classic in November while Japanese-bred Brave Smash, another of the unplaced brigade in The Everest, returned to Melbourne to win the MVRC Manikato Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) at his next start.

Trapeze Artist (Snitzel x Domesday) NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Spring/Summer 2018

Land of Plenty (Stratum x Dancing)

Kementari (Lohnro x Yavanna)

Pierata (Pierro x November Flight)

Godolphin’s Successful Spring Godolphin had a very lucrative spring in both Melbourne and Sydney with fly in, fly out raiders and a mix of imports and locally bred horses trained by James Cummings. Handsome gelding Avilius (Pivotal) was guided by Cummings through a series of restricted and stakes wins in Sydney and Melbourne leading up to a start in the VRC Melbourne Cup while veteran Hartnell (Authorized) carried top weight to win the ATC Epsom Handicap (Gr. 1, 1600m) at Randwick on September 29 to justify his present Timeform rating of 127.Hartnell then went down to Melbourne to finish second to Land of Plenty (Stratum) in the MRC Toorak Handicap (Gr. 1, 1600m) at Caulfield. Land of Plenty was bred in NSW by the Esplin family. James Cummings pulled off another important race for Godolphin on Victoria Derby day when import Best of Days (Azamour) won the Kennedy Mile (Cantala Stakes) (Gr. 1, 1600m). Godolphin’s two Britain-based trainers, Saeed bin Suroor and Charlie Appleby, both sent small, select teams to Melbourne with spectacular results. Saeed bin Suroor’s Dubawi stallion Benbatl captured the MRC Caulfield Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m) beating the Appleby-trained Blair House (Pivotal)before chasing Winx home in the W.S. Cox Plate. The trainer captured a second Group 1,the VATC Caulfield Cup (Gr. 1, 2400m), with the courageous stallion Best Solution (Kodiac) who failed to stay the distance when he backed up in the VRC Melbourne Cup (Gr. 1, 3200m). It was left to Charlie Appleby to finally give Godolphin a long sought after victory in the Melbourne Cup with lightly weighted gelding Cross Counter (Teofilo), a Northern Hemisphere time three-year-old who produced an overpowering late finish to snatch the prize.

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter/Spring 2018

Appleby also had a major success for Godolphin with sprinting stallion Jungle Cat (Iffraaj) in the Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr. 1, 1400m).Jungle Cat is retiring tostud in Britain in 2019. Two other imports to impress in Melbourne were Yucatan (Galileo) and Homesman (War Front).Yucatan scored an incredibly easy win in the MRC Herbert Power Handicap (Gr. 2400m) but failed badly in the Melbourne Cup while Homesman captured the MRC Underwood Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m) before finishing second to Best Solution in the Caulfield Cup. Four-year-old stallion Pierata (Pierro), bred in NSW by Grahame Mapp’s historic Hobartville Stud, continued his good three-year-old form in the spring, winning the Sydney Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m), a consolation for The Everest, before finishing third to Santa Ana Lane in the VRC Classic and this earner of more than $2.75 million deserves a Group 1 success in the autumn. Teofilo gelding Humidor opened his spring campaign with a stylish victory in the MRC Memsie Stakes (Gr. 1, 1400m) defeating Kementari (Lonhro) and showed consistency with later third placings in the Underwood Stakes, Caulfield Stakes and the W.S. Cox Plate. Godolphin’s ultra handsome stallion Kementari had a rather disappointing spring except for a fast finishing and luckless third in the Manikato Stakes so it is hoped he can win at least one more feature race in the autumn before his likely retirement to stud in 2019. NSW-bred mare Youngstar (High Chaparral) is another four-year-old worthy of mention for her performances against the best during the spring.Smallish and still not fully mature, she was a fine second to Winx in the Turnbull Stakes and ran very well for sixth in the Melbourne Cup so look out for her in the autumn.

TImeform Review (continued)

A number of other three-year-old colts and geldings performed well during the spring in Sydney and Melbourne, notably Zousain (Zoustar), Sesar (Sebring), Extra Brut (Domesday), Graff (Star Witness), Lean Mean Machine (Zoustar) and Written By (Written Tycoon). Future Widden Stud stallion Zousain continued from his juvenile days in finding another just a little better on the day but his turn for a major win should come in the autumn.Bred in the Hunter Valley by Richard Pegum, Zousain was runner up to The Autumn Sun in the Golden Rose before filling the same position in a closely contested Coolmore Stud (Ascot Vale) Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) behind the outstanding filly Sunlight (Zoustar). Queensland-trained Sesar, bred by Howard Blight in NSW, handled the heavy conditions at Randwick on October 6 to beat the talented Sandbar (Snitzel) in the ATC Roman Consul Stakes (Gr, 2, 1200m).

The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice x Azmiyna)

Three Year Olds Clear leader among Australia’s three-year-olds this season is future Arrowfield Stud stallion The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) who in the spring added two more Group 1 victories to the BRC J.J. Atkins Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m) he won as a late two-year-old. Only once defeated, most unluckily when third, in six starts to date, this quality individual out of the Aga Khan-bred Galileo mare Azmiyna, is still maturing and is expected to be even better in the autumn when an early target will be the ATC Randwick Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m). Early in the spring The Autumn Sun impressed in coming from last to take the ATC Golden Rose (Gr. 1,1400m) but the race which really stamped his class was the MRC Caulfield Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) in which his effortless,four- and-a-half lengths victory made him look very special.Certainly, the Timeform experts are of that view, awarding The Autumn Sun a rating of 126, well clear of any of his contemporaries.

Sesar (Sebring x Sarthemare) 8

Extra Brut was the staying star among the spring threeyear-olds in Melbourne, scoring an impressive victory in the VRC Victoria Derby (Gr. 1, 2500m) before finishing a fine third in the weight-for-age L.K.S.. Mackinnon Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m) behind the older Trap For Fools (Poet’s Voice). Graff, a powerful son of Star Witness bred in NSW by B2B Bloodstock, finished fifth against the best older sprinters in The Everest at his most recent start but had earlier looked a colt of real class when easily winning the ATC San Domenico Stakes (Gr. 3, 1100m) before his first defeat when second to Lean Mean Machine in the ATC Run To The Rose (Gr. 2,1200m) after which he was third behind The Autumn Sun and Zousain in the Golden Rose so we look forward to his return in the autumn. Blue Diamond Stakes winner Written By had only three starts in the spring, winning over 1000m at Caulfield before taking the MRC Blue Sapphire Stakes and then finishing fourth in a star- studded Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington. Emerging late in the Melbourne spring was Ringerdingding (Sebring – Maybe I, by Red Ransom) who charged home late to defeat top filly Seabrook (Hinchinbrook) in the MRC Sandown Guineas (Gr. 2, 1600m) and should be a player in some of the big races during the autumn.

Graff (Star Witness x Dinkum Diamond) NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Spring/Summer 2018

Three Year Old Fillies Six or seven three-year-old fillies starred in the spring, standouts being Sunlight (Zoustar), Smart Melody (Smart Missile),Maid of Heaven (Smart Missile) and Amphitrite (Sebring) with honourable mentions for Miss Fabulass (Frankel), Oohood (I Am Invincible), Aristia (Lonhro) and Thrillster (Starspangledbanner). Bred by a partnership headed by Widden Stud, Sunlight had a testing campaign as a two-year-old, proving her toughness and class, winning the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, ATC Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr. 2, 1100m) and ATC Magic Night Stakes (Gr. 3, 1200m) before finishing third to Estijaab (Snitzel) and Oohood in the Golden Slipper Stakes. Sunlight showed she was as good as ever in the spring in taking the MRC Quezette Stakes (Gr. 3, 1100m) and the MRC Thoroughbred Club Stakes (Gr. 3,1200m) before an unlucky unplaced effort in the MVRC Manikato Stakes but brought back to her own age against the top colts she soon atoned with a game victory in the VRC Coolmore Stud (Ascot Vale) Stakes (Gr. 1, 1200m) run in 1:08.72. In this race she famously led home a trifecta for her young sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor) to earn a Timeform rating of 116, the same figure given to the ill-fated Smart Melody. Trainer Tony McEvoy has done a fine job with Sunlight, now earner of more than $3 million, and so, too, did trainer Kris Lees with Smart Melody, a Gooree Park homebred who won her first five starts before failing to run out 1600m when unplaced in the MRC Thousand Guineas (Gr. 1, 1600m) won in dashing style by Amphitrite (Timeform 115+).Smart Melody’s wins included the VRC Cap d’Antibes Stakes (Listed,1100m) and the MRC Thousand Guineas Prelude (Tranquil Star Stakes) (Gr. 2,1400m) but sadly the filly died from colic while spelling in early December. Smart Missile, Smart Melody’s sire, is now standing at Twin Hills Stud in southern NSW after beginning his breeding career at Arrowfield

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Spring/Summer 2018

and he came up with another good filly in the spring, Maid of Heaven, who overturned the colts Aramayo (Poet’s Voice) and Thinkin’ Big (High Chaparral) in the ATC Spring Champion Stakes (Gr. 1, 2000m) on October 6. Amphitrite was sensational in the Thousand Guineas prompting connections to start her next in the weight-for-age VRC Empire Rose Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m) against older mares but she was badly blocked in running to finish a long way behind the winner Shillelagh (Savabeel). While Amphitrite’s ability to run the distance was in question, her next and final start of the spring came in the VRC Oaks (Gr. 1, 2500m) in which she started favourite but pulled up lame to finish last. Winner of the Oaks was Aristia who five days earlier had taken the VRC Wakeful Stakes (Gr. 2, 2000m). John Singleton’s superbly related homebred Miss Fabulass (Frankel – Samantha Miss, by Redoute’s Choice), although still green, impressed in winning the ATC Tea Rose Stakes (Gr. 2, 1400m) at Randwick on September 15 beating top filly Fiesta (I Am Invincible) but as a short priced favourite she could then only finish fourth in the ATC Flight Stakes (Gr. 1, 1600m) on September 29, a race which enabled Oohood to finally break her maiden if only by a narrow margin,

Zousain (Zoustar x Pasar Silbano)

Oohood, who traces to Easy Date, did not win at two years but contested a number of the top events, placing in the MRC Blue Diamond Stakes, Golden Slipper Stakes and the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes and after the Flight Stakes she further underlined her class when third to The Autumn Sun in the Caulfield Guineas to take her earnings to $1,490,800. NSW-bred Thrillster was another filly to put up several good performances during the Melbourne spring, winning the MVRC Atlantic Jewel; Stakes (Listed, 1200m),placing second in the Thousand Guineas Prelude and fifth in the Thousand Guineas.

Dubious (Not A Single Doubt x Supicieuse)

Oohood (I Am Invincible x Bella Sunday)

Two Year Olds Form in the early spring features for juveniles is often hard to evaluate but in Sydney among the colts to show good ability were ATC Breeders’ Plate (Gr. 3,1000m) winner Dubious (Not a Single Doubt) and runner up Covert Ops (I Am Invincible), Czarson (Stratum), Time To Reign (Time For War) and Godolphin’s Tassort, a member of the first crop of Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible). Sydney-trained speedster Unite and Conquer (Hinchinbrook) won at Flemington and more recently took the Magic Millions 2YO at Wyong before heading to the Gold Coast. Yarraman Park Stud’s outstanding young sire I Am Invincible appears to have his finest ever group of two-year-olds.Apart from the previously mentioned Covert Ops, fillies by him to impress are Catch Me, winner of the ATC Gimcrack Stakes (Gr. 3, 1000m) and Espaaniyah, brilliant winner of the Inglis 2YO Banner

Covert Ops (I Am Invincible x Fine Bubbles)

at Moonee Valley, and Vinicunca, winner of the VRC Maribyrnong Plate (Gr.3, 1000m). Timeform at time of writing has Covert Ops, Dubious and Tassort equal on 112 at the head of their ratings but a number of others are not far behind as you will see from the accompanying tables. The Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic may produce a new leader before lead up races for the Blue Diamond Stakes and the Golden Slipper better define the strength of the juvenile crop.

Global Gold Fever “ Red Rock Canyon sired his first Grade1 winner in Gavea Rio De Janeiro on 12th June 16, when I planned the mating, the deciding factor turned out to be G1’s rating. You can also pat yourself on the back as the “red dots” indicate that he would probably need 1600 meters at 4 years and up” Les Harlow, Haras las Madres, Brazil “ I just want to say what a fantastic program you’ve developed and how much it’s helped me. I’ve gained a lot of respect in the South African racing industry and it is all thanks to you.” Chris Swart, Equine Pedigree Analyst, South Africa

“ My racing operation Darius Racing is this year’s leading owner in Germany. So far we won the German Derby and three other group races. We use goldmine routinely in our purchases” Dr Stefan Oschmann, Germany “ I can’t tell you how much I loved your seminars in Lexington and Del Mar this past week. G1 Goldmine is a fabulous program and it will be of invaluable assistance to me in years to come” Debbie Barkley, Ranch Hills Farm, California, USA “ On the 4x4, they are awesome, and it¹s interesting to watch the progression of best sires for particular mares as the body of performance data grows each year.”- Mark Secrest, New York

“ Can’t do without my Goldmine. I use the program daily and have recommended it frequently.” Jeanne Davis, Nominations Manager, Ballena Vista Farm, California “ Used it for my mare ‘Pamper’ (Pins/Gio) to send her to Postponed, really helped in my choice thank you. Will definitely purchase your product b4 the next breeding season next year Keep up the good work :)” Sasha Gandy, small breeder, New Zealand

Workshops held in US over the last month

“ I confess to still playing with the website at midnight last night and starting again as soon as I woke up this morning - it’s fantastic!” Gill Bostwick, Diddestone Stud, UK “ I love it - I use it several times a day! Mark Byrne, Ballylinch Stud, Ireland Global Workshops

“ Wonderful software, I used it to breed SEA THE MOON and now it’s helping me select mares for him. Heike Bischoff, Gorlsdorf Stud, Germany

Striking It Rich! “There will always be a good reason for the cross. I spend months looking at the pedigree and studying the stallion before I send the mare away.” - Howard Blight

“I use G1 Goldmine and other methods to look back through all of the horses in the pedigree, about five generations. I see if I find good horses in there that those crosses have produced,” he said. “You’ll find that in most of the crosses I’ve got, there are good horses, but it might be the second sire that matches rather than the sire.” “There will always be a good reason for the cross. I spend months looking at the pedigree and studying the stallion before I send the mare away.”

Sesar the best of Bendaree Blight’s Bendaree Park at Appin, south-west of Sydney, is not quite the hive of activity it was a few years ago. He has gone from 14 broodmares to around five as he simplifies things. “Because our numbers are smaller, I don’t do the sale prep anymore and I send them up to the Hunter (Valley) and prep them up there,” he said. Sesar would be the best horse he has bred, but Bendaree Park alumni include G2 WA Oaks winner Superior Star (Nothin’ Leica Dane) as well as multiple Hong Kong winner Flagship Shine (Tale of The Cat {USA}) and the promising Flying Murty (Murtajill) who won three of his four races in Victoria before being recently sold to Hong Kong. But he also has a high opinion of Birdy, the Dawn Approach (Ire) filly sister to Sesar and Doubt Defying, who will be raced by Newhaven Park with Brad Widdup. “I haven’t been able to keep a filly out of Sarthemare. I would have loved to be able to keep that Dawn Approach filly, but when you’ve only got a few horses every year to make your money out of it, it was necessary for me to sell her to keep paying the bills,” he said. “That pedigree is a marvellous pedigree. That should be a good racehorse because there are some wonderful crosses in that pedigree. She’s a really lovely horse, I’d be surprised if she doesn’t do something at the racetrack as well.”

NSW Breeders Awards & ATC Directors Luncheon

NSW Breeders Annual Awards ATC Directors Luncheon New South Wales’ breeders again proved Australia’s great champions are sourced from the state’s prime breeding regions at the annual award presentation for achievements during the 2017-2018 racing season. The Australian Turf Club kindly hosted TBNSW members and sponsors at the Directors’ Lunch during Colgate Optic White George Main Stakes Day on Saturday at Royal Randwick. TBNSW Director Hamish Esplin introduced the awards, with winners announced by Bred To Win’s Caroline Searcy and sponsors including IRT, Horsepower, G1 Goldmine, HQ Insurance, the ATC and Ranvet. The title of Ranvet NSW Small Breeder Of The Year was awarded to Mary Jane Basson who bred Queensland Derby winner Dark Dream. (All American) He was only the sixth foal Basson had bred, being from her Lion Hunter mare Buchanan Girl who cost only $800.00 and traces back to the famous Leica family. While he has been sold to Hong Kong Basson assured the room a repatriation clause means he will eventually return to Australia to retire at his birthplace. The Horsepower NSW Champion First Season Sire was won by Widden Stud’s Zoustar (Northern Meteor) who was also crowned Australian Champion Sire for the season. With record earnings of over $3.2 million including three group-winning first crop two-year-olds. Widden Stud’s Antony Thompson highlighted the fact Zoustar currently has two of the top four favourites in next week’s $1 million Golden Rose. Julia Ritchie, newly elected Vice-Chair of the Australian Turf Club presented the award for Champion NSW Sire of Two-Year-Olds to Jon Freyer of Arrowfield Stud for the second year in succession, for their dual Champion Australian sire Snitzel. (Redoute’s Choice). Freyer noted Snitzel’s two yearolds earnt $3.6 million last season, highlighted by Golden Slipper winner Estijaab, plus Nomothaj, Prairie Fire and Sandbar who between them won six group and listed races. 18

NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Spring/Summer 2018

The G1 Goldmine NSW Champion Broodmare of The Year was accepted by Willow Park’s Jade Rossington on behalf of Busking’s (Encosta De Lago) owner and breeder Michael Thomas. Busking is the dam of triple group one winner Happy Clapper and 2018 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (G2) winner Not A Single Cent. Thomas bought the mare back as a 9yo for $13,000 in foal to Teofilo, the resultant foal the $6.3 million earner Happy Clapper, who Thomas had travelled to Flemington to watch in the Makybe Diva Stakes (G1). The final award for the HQ Insurance NSW Champion Sire was also presented to dual Champion Australian Sire Snitzel, with Jon Freyer collecting the award on behalf of Arrowfield Stud. Snitzel’s offspring earnt a record $29.2 million in the 2017-2018 season with his 26 stakes-winners again equalling Danehill’s record, headed by four group one winners, 2yo Estijaab, 3yo Trapeze Artist, 4yo Russian Revolution and 5yo Everest winner Redzel. Thoroughbred Breeders New South Wales congratulates all winners and thanks all sponsors in particular the Australian Turf Club for its hospitality and looks ahead to more breed-shaping results from NSW breeders in the new season.
