President’s Report STALLION PARADES It’s here already, the 2018 breeding season has begun with a grand line up of NSW sires parading the barns, foals landing and the buzz of the excitement warms up for the Spring Racing Carnival. With Twin Hills Stud and Pepper Tree farm opening the start of the Stallion parades, the hype of the Hunter Valley Studs there’s never a dull weekend at this time of year. Next stop Kooringal parades on 16th September. ANNUAL AWARDS The 2017-18 racing season was once again dominated by NSW horses, as the stats rolled in for the year, we’re ramping up to announce our award winners at our Annual Awards luncheon held this year at Royal Randwick Ballroom on September 15, we hope you’ll join us for a great day of racing whilst celebrating our award winners and watch the mighty NSW Bred Winx head for a third title. TRAINING AND EDUCATION This year’s Breeders Seminars in August, at Hunter Valley and Wagga Wagga, were very well attended and almost at capacity. Feedback from the groups was extremely positive once again. Members heard from Australia’s leading equine veterinarians and industry professionals and set off with newly absorbed knowledge ready for the upcoming season. Topics included; Mare reproduction, Mare cycle management, Foaling, Neonatal foals, Foal farriery, Stallion Physiology, X-Rays and Scoping, Nutrition on Stud farms, Weanling to Sale ring, Health & Wellbeing and current challenges. A huge thank you to our lecturers for their time, quality presentations and wealth of knowledge shared with our attendees. A major focus on the drought was a key indicator from most lecturers, all farms and breeders preparing and rearing horses, are looking at reformed nutrition plans and developed information of agronomy requirements leading into spring. Many of the attendees had travelled from all around the state and a few inter-states, which has our board looking into the possibility of running seminars in other locations such as Sydney, we welcome all feedback from our members and look forward to hearing your ideas for locations and topics that would benefit our members next year.

Timeform Review
Timeform Review of South Australian and Queensland Winter racing carnivals By Alex Steedman, (photos courtesy of Martin King Sportspix)
Racing and Sports Timeform experts recap the key performances through the Brisbane and Adelaide carnivals. As the cream of the crop head out for spells after the autumn carnival, the Brisbane and Adelaide carnivals provide the opportunity for quality gallopers to move from the shadows of Australia’s best. A dozen Group 1s were conducted across May and June with the winners generally producing Timeform ratings which indicate they’ll be right in their element racing through the 2018 spring.
Settled back in the capacity field, Santa Ana Lane stayed close to the fence and sprinted well to find the front 50m from home before drawing 1.3 lengths clear. He was awarded a Timeform rating of 120 for the display, a new career peak and five pounds higher than his previous best performance in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes during the spring. Santa Ana Lane ventured to Queensland three weeks later for the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1350m). As in the Goodwood, Santa Ana Lane was ridden for luck and able to find clear running along the rail. He capitalised once in clear running, hitting the lead 150m out before a 1.8 length win ensued. The success yielded a Timeform rating of 124, a figure which has Santa Ana Lane measuring up well compared to recent winners of the race.
Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega x Fast Fleet)
Five Year Olds The Anthony Freedman-trained Santa Ana Lane exits season 2017/18 as one of Australia’s most improved older horses. Prior to season 2017/18, Santa Ana Lane’s biggest career win was as a three-year-old in the 2016 Zeditave Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield. The gelded son of Lope De Vega is now a multiple Group 1 winner. Santa Ana Lane returned late in the autumn following a prolonged spring 4
campaign which netted a victory in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield before a trip west for the Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) in Perth where he finished sixth. Third run from a spell, the fiveyear-old claimed the first of two Group 1 successes for the prep when contesting the Group 1 Darley Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville on May 19.
Santa Ana Lane joins the likes of Dane Ripper (1997), Show A Heart (2002) and Black Piranha (2010) as the equal second highest rated winners of the Stradbroke Handicap. Top spot belongs to the legendary Rough Habit who won the 1992 Stradbroke with a victory awarded a Timeform rating of 127. A versatile sprinter with wins ranging between 1100m and 1400m, connections were hopeful after the Stradbroke of securing a slot for Santa Ana Lane in The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 13.
NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter/Spring 2018
Four Year Olds The pick of wins through the Queensland Winter Carnival belongs to Impending who will stand his first season at stud for Darley in Victoria this spring. Winner of the 2017 Stradbroke Handicap, Impending returned to Queensland with a bang by taking out the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on April 28. The son of Lonhro then produced a fast closing second behind English in the Doomben 10,000 (1200m).
English (Encosta De Lago x Court)
It was confirmed on July 5 that Inglis had selected the five-year-old to run for them in the $13 million sprint feature.
Not having raced through the autumn, Impending was peaking third up in the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup (1350m) at Doomben on May 26.
Settled back throughout, Impending still had plenty of work to do at the top of the straight. Under an inspired ride from Damian Browne, the Godolphin entire was able to weave his way through the field and edge out Le Romain in second with pocket dynamo Champagne Cuddles in third. Impending’s victory returned a Timeform rating of 122+, equal to a Master Timeform figure he’d run to on three prior occasions when winning the 2016 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) and placing in both the 2017 Sydney Stakes and the 2018 Doomben 10,000.
Another who obtained a slot in The Everest following her Winter Carnival performances is the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained English. The mare secured a spot in the $13 million sprint after being selected by Damion Flower of Jadeskye Racing. The announcement came after English’s strong campaign which was highlighted by her success in the Doomben 10,000 (1200m) on May 12. English produced a Timeform rating of 118, one pound above her second placing in the Group 1 Galaxy two starts prior and her highest rating since running to 121 in the 2017 TJ Smith Stakes when second behind Chautauqua. The five-year-old was the first member of the fairer sex to win the race since Sea Siren in 2012 who returned a Timeform figure of 121 with 2017 winner Redzel also running to 121 when beating Counterattack. Timeform Review (continued)
Falling just short of sharing the spoils with Impending for the highest rated winner at the Brisbane Winter Carnival was the Chris Wallertrained Comin’ Through who claimed a maiden Group 1 success in the Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 19. A half brother to Newgate Farm’s multiple Group 1- winning stallion Criterion, connections made the difficult decision to geld Comin’ Through during his summer hiatus. The decision reaped almost instant rewards with the son of Fastnet Rock winning the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 17 before a luckless second in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) behind Happy Clapper at Randwick on April 7.
Comin_ Through (Fastnet Rock x Mica_s Pride)
Bad luck followed Comin’ Through to Brisbane where he endured a torrid run when running sixth in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast on May 5. The Doomben Cup represented a change of fortunes for the Sir Owen Glenn-raced four-year-old who enjoyed a dream run in transit under the guidance of Michael Walker. Comin’ Through from there ran on strongly out wide in the straight and was able to edge out his stablemate Egg Tart with a Doomben Cup victory awarded a Timeform rating of 121. As well as having English contest The Everest, the Waterhouse-Bott stable are also pushing for Prompt Response to gain a start. Prompt Response arrived in Brisbane for the Winter Carnival after a full autumn preparation in Sydney. After a slender second in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) at Doomben on June 9, the consistent mare went one better to take out the Tatt’s Tiara (1350m) at Doomben a fortnight later.
NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter/Spring 2018
Prompt Response (Beneteau x Prompt)
Taken to the front from an inside draw by Blake Shinn, Prompt Response was able to settle off the leader Daysee Doom along the rail for much of the race, kicking clear at the top of the straight to claim a one and a quarter length win over Shillelagh in second with Super Cash third.
The Beneteau mare returned a new master Timeform rating of 115 for the win, one pound clear of her Dane Ripper Stakes performance the run prior.

Three Year Olds
D_Argento (So You Think x Fullazz)
A highlight of the 2017/18 racing season was the strength of the three-year-old division which was spearheaded by the likes of Trapeze Artist (126), Kementari (125), Menari (122p), Ace High (120) and D’Argento (120). Its quality was even showcased on the world stage courtesy of Coolmore Stud Stakes winner Merchant Navy.
Menari (Snitzel x Isurava)
Ace High (High Chaparral x Come Sunday)
The son of Fastnet Rock was transferred to Aidan O’Brien’s Ballydoyle Stables in Ireland following a third in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 10 behind Redkirk Warrior. He won his UK debut when producing a Timeform rating of 126 in the Group 2 Greenlands Stakes (1207m) at The Curragh on May 26 and then reproduced the figure to claim the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes (1207m) on June 23 during the Royal Ascot Carnival. Merchant Navy will stand his first season at Coolmore in NSW this spring.
Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock x Legally Bay) 8
Another three-year-old sprinter to successfully take on the older
horses was Shoals who claimed the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on May 5. Freshened and dropping back in distance since winning the Group 1 Surround Stakes (1400m) in Sydney two months earlier, Shoals unleashed an impressive turn of foot to sprint past a strong field of fillies and mares to win by almost two lengths. It was her third Group 1 victory for the season having claimed the Myer Classic (1600m) at Flemington on November 4 and the Surround Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on March 23. The Robert Sangster success is considered the pick of her top level wins though, given a Timeform rating of 116, two pounds clear of her previous career peak of 114 achieved in the Myer Classic. Now a Group 1 winner over distances between 1200m to a mile, Shoals will likely be kept to sprints this spring after The Star selected the filly to run for them in The Everest at Randwick on October 13. Dark Dream found a new level once arriving in Brisbane and getting up over a trip. NSW BREEDERS’ NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATEUPDATE Winter/Spring Winter 2018
The daughter of High Chaparral then became the first filly since Scarlett Lady in 2011 to claim the Doomben Roses – Queensland Oaks double. Chris Waller’s filly came away with the win despite a less than ideal run in transit, being bumped repeatedly through the run and also getting forced wide with no cover midrace. She still proved too good though, edging out her stablemate Another Dollar to give Chris Waller his third Queensland Oaks in four years after Winx (2015) and Egg Tart (2017), each at Doomben over 2200m rather than the traditional 2400m at Eagle Farm. Darren Weir raided South Australian 3YO features firstly with Sopressa winning the Group 1 Schweppes Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville on May 5. The daughter of So You Think was dominant a fortnight earlier in winning the Schweppervescence Stakes (1800m) at the course. She lifted again taking on a stronger group of fillies and was given a perfect ride in behind the early speed by Harry Coffey.
Shoals (Fastnet Rock x The Broken Shore)
The gelding arrived in Brisbane off a second in the South Pacific Classic (1400m) at Randwick on April 14 which returned him what at the time was a new Master Timeform rating of 101p. Life in the Sunshine State obviously agreed with the son of All American who came away from the winter having claimed both the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) at Doomben on May 12 and the Group 1 Queensland Derby (2200m) at Doomben on June 9. His Queensland Derby was given a Timeform rating of 114, clearly the pick of the staying efforts produced by three-year-olds over the winter.
Clear space emerged for the pair immediately upon on straightening and a slender win ensued from Sheezdashing and Miss Admiration which returned a Timeform rating of 107. Weir struck again a week later courtesy of Leicester in the Group 1 South Australian Derby at Morphettville (2500m). Despite having won the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2035m) at Morphettville on April 28, Leicester went into the race as somewhat of a distance query but fought hard in the straight to win by 1.5 lengths from Rezealient and Runaway. The son of Wanted joined Howard Be Thy Name (2016) and Volatile Mix (2017) as South Australian Derby winners for Darren Weir in the past three years.
That said, closing well behind Dark Dream for third was the Chris Waller-trained Youngstar who could be one to watch next season. The daughter of High Chaparral enjoyed a breakout prep late in the season where she graduated from maiden status to Group 1 winner through just four starts. Youngstar jumped from provincial wins in New South Wales to the Doomben Roses (2000m) on May 12 and handled the grade rise with aplomb, claiming the Group 2 fillies event with a bit up the sleeve. Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock x Legally Bay)
Leicester returned a Timeform rating of 108, which was below the figure reached by his stablemates over the last two years (Volatile Mix 110; Howard Be Thy Name 111) and was the lowest-rating SA Derby win since Shadows In The Sun (107) in 2011. It was a career peak for Leicester though and his third time rating in triple figures, improving from the 105 he recorded when winning the Chairman’s Stakes.
Two Year Olds The Winter Carnival played host to an exciting three-year-old prospect for next season with The Autumn Sun claiming the Group 1 J.J. Atkins Stakes (1600m) at Doomben on June 9. Off two soft wins in Sydney, the Redoute’s Choice colt arrived in Brisbane looking to taste Group 1 success at just his third career start. Things weren’t made easy for The Autumn Sun either after he settled back and wide. Despite that, The Autumn Sun, ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, was able to peel out deep on the turn and make good ground in the straight to edge out stablemate Zousain in second with Fundamentalist third. The Chris Waller-trained runner returned a new career peak Timeform figure of 113+, five pounds above his previous win over 1400m at Randwick. NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter/Spring 2018
Sopressa (So You Think x Hidden Strings)
The son of Redoute’s Choice measures up well to recent winners, seven pounds above 2017 winner Capital Gain and just two pounds below 2016 winner Sacred Elixir who ran to 115p. After going unbeaten through a maiden prep which culminated with a Group 1 victory, The Autumn Sun could be capable of substantial improvement in the spring with the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas a likely target. Chris Waller has long sent his late season two-year-olds to the Brisbane Winter Carnival and for good results.
Youngstar (High Chaparral x Starspangled)
The Autumn Sun will likely follow in the footsteps of former Chris Waller-trained runner Press Statement who claimed the J.J. Atkins – Caulfield Guineas double in 2015. He first claimed the J.J. Atkins Stakes in 2010 with Pressday. Other two-year-olds Chris Waller has taken to Brisbane in past seasons who ran second in the J.J. Atkins Stakes include Zoustar and Brazen Beau. Both colts went on to become dual Group 1 winners during their threeyear-old season, a piece of history which bodes well for 2018 J.J. Atkins runner up Zousain. Stallion Parades Across the State
STALLION PARADES ACROSS THE STATE TWIN HILLS STUD STALLION PARADE A bumper start to the new racing season from progeny of new stallion Smart Missile certainly set the tone for Twin Hills Stud’s stallion parade at their farm in Cootamundra. Smart Missile’s first stallion parade at Twin Hills was well supported from the public, as the former champion Australian first-season sire enjoys a purple patch of form from his progeny. With 17 winners from 68 starters in the first three weeks of 2018-19 season, Smart Missile sits second overall, behind only I Am Invincible (Aus), on the sires tables in terms of overall winners. “It was great to show off Smart Missile in his first year here,” Twin Hills owner Olly Tait said. “It was a great turnout from the breeders on what was a fairly cold and windy day.” Gooree Park Stud chose to stand the son of Fastnet Rock at Tait and his wife Amber’s new operation, which they took ownership of from Godolphin in early 2017. Tait said Smart Missile was an important addition to the roster in just their second year in business. “We were keen to get a proven sire and we thought Smart Missile fitted the bill,” Tait said. “He’s a good stallion and to be able to stand a stallion that gets the volume of winners he does is important. He’s getting good quality winners too, He has a lot of winners in Sydney and Melbourne, with regularity and so we couldn’t be happy with how he’s gone.” The First crop foals for Odyssey Moon is also an important time for Twin Hills’ foundation stallion,

Odyssey Moon, whose foals have started to arrive. The reports on the first crop from the son of Snitzel are proving very positive. “If the foals by Odyssey Moon that have been born so far are any indication, then we are in good shape.” - Olly Tait “So far, so good, only a limited number. We’re very happy, and hopefully if the ones that have been born so far are any indication, then we are in good shape,” Tait said. Smart Missile, whose has produced four stakes winners to date, stands for $13,200, while Odyssey Moon stands for $8800. Contact Olly Tait on 02 6942 2268 or olly@twinhillsstud.com

direction for the stud as they begun the journey into Thoroughbred breeding in partnership with Arrowfield stud. I am Invincible (YtS 2010)
NSW racehorses and sires dominated the 2017/18 season By Les Young (photos courtesy of Martin King Sportspix
If you want a top winner, buy horses bred in NSW or the stock of sires standing in NSW. That is the clear message from a study of results of the 2017/18 racing season which closed on July 31. Also remember that most horses bred in NSW and/or by sires based in NSW are eligible for nomination to the lucrative BOBS Bonus Scheme which ensures greater financial returns on top of normal prizemoney when you race those horses in NSW at any level. The vast majority of last season’s two-year-olds such as Estijaab, Oohood, Sunlight, Performer and The Autumn Sun were not only bred in NSW but also offered for sale as yearlings by their breeders. Fastnet Rock (YtS 2005)
Leading three-year-olds such as Trapeze Artist, Ace High, D’argento, Levendi, Merchant Navy, Pierata and She Will Reign are all by NSW –based stallions and were all offered for sale as yearlings. And we can’t forget that the mighty mare Winx and Redzel, winner of the inaugural running of The Everest, plus a host of other major winners last season are by NSW sires and could have been bought as yearlings to bring huge financial returns for their lucky owners and trainers.
High Chaparral (Deceased 2014)
Records are made to be broken in this era of ever increasing prize money so it came as no surprise when Arrowfield Stud’s remarkable sire Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) captured his second successive Australian general sires’ championship in 2017/18 but also shattered his previous season’s record prize money tally by a huge margin with a figure of more than $29.24 million. At the same time, Snitzel was responsible for the season’s greatest number of winners (173) and the highest number of stakes winners (26) and black type wins (43). Second in both categories was Yarraman Park Stud’s mercurial I Am Invincible.
Street Cry (Deceased 2014) 20
Snitzel also retained his titles as Australia’s leading sire of both two-yearolds and three-year-olds in the 2017/18 season and also had five juvenile winners in New Zealand.. NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter/Spring 2018

Not A Single Doubt (YtS 2005)
Sebring (YtS 2009)
Coolmore’s international stud success Fastnet Rock (Danehill), twice champion sire in past seasons, again demonstrated his consistency to fill third place on the Australian general sires’ table last season followed by two now deceased former NSW stallions in High Chaparral and Street Cry. Following them on the leading sires’ list for last season were Not a Single Doubt and Sebring with Lonhro and his champion son Pierro in ninth and 10th places. Widden Stud’s sensational young stallion Zoustar (Northern Meteor) was a decisive winner of the title for last season’s champion first season sire in Australia and it is expected his stock should be even better suited as three-year-olds.
Lonhro (YtS 2004)
Other young NSW sires Sizzling (Snitzel) and Epaulette (Commands) also got off to promising starts with their first juveniles last season with Epaulette earning further kudos in having a NSW-bred runner capture a Group 1 event in South Africa. Past and present NSW-based stallions dominated the general sires’ list for 2017/18, filling 18 of the top 20 places. Similarly, now retired NSW stallion Encosta de Lago topped last season’s list of leading broodmare sires ahead of the still active Redoute’s Choice. Fastnet Rock further added to his career achievements last season when his outstanding filly Avantage made him New Zealand’s champion sire of two-year-olds.

First Season Sires
New South Wales gains more first season Sires SEBRING SUN Chestnut horse, 2012
Genthorne Park, Glenthorne
Fee: $3,300
Sebring Sun is a young son of SEBRING, sire of 45 stakes winners including DISSIDENT, CRITERION and EGG TART. He is out of a FRENCH DEPUTY (USA) mare named Soleil Royale who is the half-sister to Group 1 winner WAR ARTIST. In the spring of 2015, the Gary Portelli trained Sebring Sun was one of the most promising three year-olds in training after winning his final start at two in late July, following an autumn campaign that saw him competitive in races such as the Group II ATC Skyline Stakes and Listed ATC Lonhro Plate. He scored a brilliant win in the Listed ATC The Rosebud over 1200 metres at his first start as a three year-old and followed with a close third in the Group III ATC Up and Coming Stakes. At his next start in the $1million Group I ATC Golden Rose over 1400 metres, Sebring Sun turned in the best run of his career when finishing third to Group I superstars Exosphere and Speak Fondly with blue-blooded Street Cry (IRE) colt Rageese in fourth place.

First Season Sires (continued)
MENARI Bay horse, 2014
Standing at Newgate Farm, Aberdeen
Menari joins the Newgate Stallion barn for 2018 season Newgate Farm is delighted to announce an exciting late addition to the 2018 stallion roster with freakishly talented Snitzel sprinter Menari joining the team. “We are committed to standing the very best and fastest sons of champion sires and Menari, an incredibly brilliant son of Snitzel, certainly fits this mould. He is the horse that we have consistently rated as the most talented colt of his year and the most desirable stallion prospect of his generation,” said Newgate Farm General Manager, Bruce Slade. A homebred for Corumbene Stud’s George Altomonte, one of Australia’s pre-eminent breeders who also bred and sold leading sire Sebring, Menari was prepared by Snitzel’s trainer Gerald Ryan. Menari was a star from day one scoring a brilliant debut win at Randwick in January and going on to be the first colt home in the Golden Slipper. When he returned in the spring, Menari was breathtakingly brilliant winning the Listed ATC The Rosebud (1100m) in a breeze under 60.5 kg. He cemented his elite status when annexing the Group II ATC Run to the Rose (1200m) in a blistering 1:08.44 just 0.05 seconds off of All Our Mob’s Rosehill 1200 metre track record that has stood for more than 20 years. Menari will be exceptionally well supported by Newgate and its powerhouse partners SF Bloodstock, China Horse Club, and Kingstar Farm in addition to George Altomonte who will retain a significant portion of the horse. “Menari is a machine. He’s got the blood, looks and blinding speed. He’s what Australian breeding is based upon. Exceptional talent breeds exceptional talent,” commented China Horse Club’s Michael Wallace.
24
Fee: $27,500
“The partnership has committed some 60 mares to Menari this season, comprising some of the most elite mares from each of their respective broodmare bands. Such is the belief we all share in this exceptional animal,” Slade concluded. Newgate is in the process of finalising Menari’s syndication, with a small number of shares available to outside breeders. Menari will stand at a fee of $27,500 inc GST.

JUKEBOX Bay horse, 2014
Standing at Aquis Farm / Emirates Park, Murrurundi
Fee: $11,000
Jukebox Retired to Aquis Brilliant Group winning Snitzel sprinter Jukebox will be a popular new late addition at Aquis’ Hunter Valley base this spring at a fee of $10,000 plus GST.
An affordable son of reigning Champion Sire Snitzel from a power packed speed family, Jukebox is sure to strike a tune with breeders looking for precocity, speed and a great physique.
Undefeated in two starts as a juvenile, the Ciaron Maher trained colt was a dominant winner of the $250,000 Listed Inglis Premier (1200m) and returned in the spring to win the stallion-making Group III MRC Vain Stakes (1100m).
In a deal brokered by Damon Gabedy of Belmont Bloodstock, Jukebox is already assured every chance of success at stud with his breeder Neville Duncan electing to remain in the horse, along with Colin McKenna who raced both Merchant Navy and Jukebox with Ciaron Maher.
In the Vain Stakes Jukebox produced a race-best sectional for the final 200m and it was this blistering turn of foot that had always set him apart from the rest; ‘’he is the most natural athlete I have ever worked with, both in Australia and in England. It was a huge disappointment when he had to be scratched on the eve of the Blue Diamond. His work leading into that race had been sensational - on the Tuesday prior he ran 11 flat on the bridle for the final 200m and we were as sure as you can be, that he would win the Group I’’ – Co-trainer David Eustace. Jukebox racked up a further three Group placings in a brief career of just eight starts, finishing second to Group I winning filly Catchy in the Group II VRC Danehill Stakes (1200m) and second to another outstanding filly in Formality in the Group III MRC Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m). “He was a gun 2YO and the best 2YO we have had; early, very sharp and natural. We look forward to training his progeny in the future,” said Ciaron Maher. A naturally fast, precocious horse that won his first three starts, Jukebox ran true to his pedigree being from the top class Stakes winning juvenile Jestatune, a daughter of Golden Slipper and leading speed influence Rory’s Jester, who of course is also the broodmare sire of Not A Single Doubt. A half-sister to WA Group I winner Ihtsahymn, Jestatune is from another Stakes winning juvenile in Umatune, a daughter of Group I winning 2YO and leading sire Umatilla.
NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter/Spring 2018
‘’Jukebox is what Australian racing is all about - an unbeaten 2YO with speed to burn and a pedigree dominated by colonial speed through Snitzel and Rory’s Jester - and he’s bred on the same cross as Not a Single Doubt.’’ – Aquis Farm CEO Shane McGrath. Hinchinbrook’s death
Hinchinbrook’s death a blow for NSW breeding Arthur and Harry Mitchell’s Yarraman Park Stud, Scone, suffered a major loss in mid-July when their young sire Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock) tragically fractured a hind leg. Only 11 years old, Hinchinbrook was foaled and reared at Yarraman Park and was a well performed three-parts brother to champion sire Snitzel. A Group 3 winner at two years and a multiple Group 1 placegetter at three years, Hinchinbrook was an immediate success at stud, becoming leading first season sire in Australia for the 2014/15 season. To date, Hinchinbrook has left 14 stakes winners headed by Group 1 winners Press Statement (now standing at Vinery Stud, Scone) and the filly Seabrook as well as Whispering Brook, Derryn (beginning a stud career in New Zealand this season), Salsonic, Diamond Tathagata (retiring to stud in Victoria this spring), Spright, Flippant, Flying Jess and Hong Kong star Beat The Clock among them. Hinchinbrook had been fully booked for the 2018 season.

Fast Track students
Fast Track students commence training in NSW Students learnt about the industry and its rewarding careers from young upcoming stud managers at Hunter Valley Equine Research Centre.
Fast Track students Careers Night at TBNSW HQ.
One of the most serious problems facing the thoroughbred breeding industry has, and continues to be, a shortage of skilled staff. Last year, when severe restrictions were applied to the recruitment of international workers (457 Visas), peak industry body – Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) – vigorously and successfully lobbied federal government to have the ban lifted for racing stables and breeding farms. However, this was only a temporary measure and TBA has gone on the front foot by introducing the ‘Fast Track’ training program, specifically designed to ‘skill up’ domestic workers: not only easing the burden on Australian stud farms, but also introducing many new people to an exciting and rewarding profession. 28
Last month 15 trainees enter the workforce around Australia, with participating farms including Sledmere, Godolphin, Kitchwin Hills, Davali and Holbrook in NSW’s Hunter Valley, along with Three Bridges Farm in Victoria and South Australia’s Mill Park. The group has spent the four weeks at Scone TAFE NSW (one of Australia’s largest vocational education and training providers), studying the theoretical side of the industry and will return to TAFE in November for another three week training block as they work toward achieving a Certificate III qualification in Horse Breeding. But for the next three months, trainees will get to experience all the finer aspects of farm life. The timing is not coincidental. Spring is by far the most intense
NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE Winter/Spring 2018
period for Australian stud farms with mares foaling down and stallions covering, in many cases, large books. “Farms across the country are finding it increasingly difficult to source good workers so we felt TBA should take a leadership role in recruiting these people,” TBA CEO Tom Reilly points out. “The course was designed to create a career pathway for those who already had a background with horses, but maybe didn’t know that breeding could provide them with a job.” Third generation breeder – Newhaven Park’s John Kelly – is another to fully endorse the Fast Track program and was, in fact, involved with the trainee selection process: “I think the course will prove invaluable for the breeding industry. I’ve no doubt that Fast Track has been able to attract youngsters by creating a pathway and the TBA has ensured all participating farms are going to make an effort to develop these trainees and bring them along so that they stay in the industry for the long term.”
There is little question that Australia is at the forefront of international breeding – the second largest in the world behind North America – and should also be recognised for its contribution to the regional economy. Aside from thousands of jobs it directly provides, ancillary industries such as transport, fodder, fencing and insurance rely on the continued health and wealth of thoroughbred breeding and racing. Furthermore, NSW Australia’s premier breeding state are the breeders of the #1 racehorse on the planet in Winx; an Australian bred in Merchant Navy won arguably the world’s most prestigious sprint race – the Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot – and; encouragingly, locally sourced gallopers made a clean sweep of Australia’s eight Group One Classics in the season just completed. Australia’s horses are renowned for competing against the best: the Fast Track program is designed to ensure that our staff can do the same.
For further information on the Fast Track program, visit : www.tbaus.com/fast-track-program Thoroughbred Breeders NSW is working with TAFE NSW on industry supported courses, our website has recently been updated with a list of courses available to newcomers and courses to upskill staff your staff.

ADVERTORIAL
BIOLOGICAL CONTROL OF HORSE ROUNDWORMS Feeding a natural fungus to horses can provide an effective alternative to chemical drenches to control worm parasites, by means of biological control. Rather than trying to cure round worm infestations with drugs, the aim is to break the worm life cycle by preventing livestock ingesting infective larvae when grazing. Mode of action: Australian strains of the nematode-destroying fungus, Duddingtonia flagrans, were first discovered in a CSIRO farm survey during the early 1990s. When fed to horses, the fungal spores pass through the gut of the animal and are excreted with the worm eggs in the dung. The fungal spores then germinate and grow networks of traps which ensnare and kill the worm larvae soon after they emerge from the eggs. The adult worms living in the animals do not live forever, so this cycle of constant reinfection is required to maintain the worm infestation in the horses. Results of Australian field studies in horses: Placebo controlled studies were conducted according to Good Clinical Practice standards by an independent contractor, in which the animals were fed the fungal spores dispersed in a nutritional supplement (placebo). The trials were undertaken in different seasons and climatic regions. In these trials efficacy was measured by direct counting of larval numbers on pasture over an 8 week period. A typical result is shown below. Over all five trials the reduction in larval numbers averaged 84 % (Healey, Lawlor et al., 2018).
Residue studies: Laboratory studies by expert chemists showed that any residues produced by the fungus were below the appropriate European Union Safety guidelines. Further, investigation by specialist toxicologists showed freedom from undesirable characteristics such as genotoxicity. Ease of use: The fungus is easy to use, by means of daily administration in a nutritional supplement or in rations. For best results, firstly perform a faecal egg count and if appropriate the horses should be treated with an effective chemical drench (avoiding total elimination of worms as young horses need to develop immunity), and then the fungus is fed to maintain their low-worm status. Ideally, the animals would also be moved at this stage onto pasture that had been rested to allow its burden of parasite larvae to die off (minimum 6 weeks). Alternately, a paddock that has been cross-grazed with another species of animal can be used. However, it is important to bear in mind the process of refugia management (see Wormboss guidelines for more about this) and to remember that the fungus will not affect worm larvae that have already emerged on the pasture. Environmental impact of the fungus: CSIRO researchers also investigated the possible adverse effects of D. flagrans on beneficial soil organisms in a typical improved pasture (Knox et al., 2002). The presence of fungi in livestock faeces did not affect the abundance of beneficial soil nematodes and microarthropods. There were also no negative effects of fungal presence on the numbers of other nematode-trapping fungi. Over time, there was generally a decline in the presence of the fungi and the rate of decline appeared to depend on seasonal conditions. Drier conditions appeared to prolong the presence of the fungi in faecal matter.
The main parasites encountered in the Australian horse trials included Small Strongyles (cyathostomes), Large Strongyles (Strongylus spp.), and Stomach Hair Worms (Trichostrongylus axei). Safety: Long term safety studies were conducted in horses with the fungus fed at 10X dose over an 8 week period with no harm detected. Also, a suite of safety studies were conducted in laboratory animals, which showed the fungus is not infective or toxic, meaning it is safe for farmers to handle.
Numerous other studies around the world have shown similar results and have demonstrated absence of impact on dung beetles and earthworms. Regulatory Approval: The APVMA granted registration of two products containing a CSIRO isolate of D. flagrans (IAH 1297) for control of gastrointestinal nematodes in grazing animal animals, namely BioWormaÂŽ and LivamolÂŽ with BioWormaÂŽ. These products are made by Australian-owned International Animal Health Products Pty Ltd, who began collaboration with CSIRO in 1997.
2018 Breeder Seminars
2018 Breeder Seminars This year’s Breeders Seminars in August, at Hunter Valley and Wagga Wagga, were very well attended and almost at capacity.
Wagga Wagga Seminar
Feedback from the groups was extremely positive once again, members heard from Australia’s leading equine veterinarians and industry professionals and set off with newly absorbed knowledge ready for the upcoming season. Topics included; Mare reproduction, Mare cycle management, Foaling, Neonatal Foals, Foal Farriery, Stallion Physiology, X-Rays and Scoping, Nutrition on Stud Farms, Weanling to Sale Ring, Health & Wellbeing and current challenges. A huge thank you to our lecturers for their time, quality presentation and wealth of knowledge shared with our attendees.
Scone Seminar
A major focus on the drought was a key indicator from most lecturers, all farms and breeders preparing and rearing horses, are looking at reformed nutrition plans and developed information of agronomy requirements leading into spring. Many of the attendees had travelled from all around the state and a few inter-states, which has our board looking into the possibility of running seminars in other locations such as Sydney, we welcome all feedback from our members and look forward to hearing your ideas for locations and topics that would benefit our members next year. 32
