Newsletter 2019
NOVEMBER 2019
A Great Time to be Generous! December is one of the busiest months of the year. This is especially true for those who are donors. There is a deluge of requests from charities, each who contribute to making our communities better. Donors could be overwhelmed with daily solicitations. So how do donors best determine where their charitable dollars go? Might I suggest you contact your local community foundation? Our business is philanthropy. Our job is to know the donor and their goals, learning the needs of nonprofits, and the overall needs of our communities. We can easily answer your questions. Take advantage of The Community Foundation experience. Now might be the perfect time to create or add to a fund at The Community Foundation. A donor-advised fund provides great flexibility. The donor gives a sum of cash or marketable securities to the fund and maintains advisory privileges on the fund. In short, the donor makes a tax deductible donation in the current year and then can recommend grants from that fund for many years to come to meet their philanthropic goals. There are also other types of funds and we would be glad to discuss these at any time. In addition, holders of traditional IRAs who are at least 70½ years old may be eligible to make direct charitable transfers up to $100,000 from their IRAs and exclude the amount distributed from their gross income at tax time. The Community Foundation can help donors execute the transfers and choose from several charitable fund options for their gift or simply distribute it to multiple charities. We are here to assist in any way we can and believe there are great ways to be generous.

Letter from the Executive Director The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County is built by our communities’ most generous individuals, families, and businesses and led by a group of dedicated community leaders. We hope that our quarterly newsletters provide a better understanding as to how expansive the work of The Community Foundation is. We are partners, educators, strategic advisors, conveners for new ideas, projects and programs. The Community Foundation has had a memorable quarter. This newsletter illustrates just some of the wonderful work our organization has achieved in the past few months. We enjoy sharing the stories of what we are accomplishing with our stakeholders, including generous donors, committed grantees, and involved community partners. The Community Foundation is beginning the campaign for the Great Community Give 2020. We launched a new nonprofit leadership training program called Excellence in Nonprofit Leadership, providing educational opportunities based on needs of the nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and community initiatives. Our Grants and Scholarships committee distributed grants from the Hildred Neff Memorial Fund and the Sean Warner Memorial Endowment Fund. And the list goes on. We work diligently and dutifully every day to serve the Harrisonburg and Rockingham community. Our Board of Directors and staff members make sure to carry out our mission and vision for this community. We hope this issue delivers to you a broader understanding of our identity as a Community Foundation. Thank you for your support as we continue to invest in our community’s future and growth.
Why I Give
Donor Spotlights
The Community Foundation wraps up all the things we care about – education, health, seniors, youth, people with developmental disabilities, historical preservation and more - and that is important to us. We have been involved with The Community Foundation for many years and see good things happening. The people who work there love our community and they work with us to easily give back to nonprofits we care about. Anyone can work with the Foundation with a gift during your life or with an estate gift. I would encourage you to contact the staff and see how they might assist you.
- Chester Bradfield I love The Community Foundation. The folks there are so helpful and communicate well. I like to work with them to help with my charitable giving because they honor my intent and all of their profit ultimately benefits the community. Whenever I am asked, ‘who can I work with that can assist me with my charitable giving?’ I always encourage The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. They make giving easy and enjoyable, honor donor intent, and care about our community.
Sincerely, Revlan Hill, Executive Director
