P

by Hayden Boyce & Todeline Defralien

olice are investigating the possibility that there could be a serial killing in the Turks and Caicos Islands who was responsible for the murder of two waitresses from the Dominican Republic in the space of three months. There has been widespread public speculation about the possibility of a serial killer following the shocking discovery of the body of 26-year-old Sorineida Moreno Arias, who was better known as Cindy, in a bushy, deserted area at the end of a rough road, near a beach in the North West Point on Wednesday July 13th, 2016. Police said Arias was dropped off at her home by a co-worker, and around 4 a.m. she was picked up by an unknown man in a blue Nissan March car. On Saturday April 23rd, 2016, the body of another 26-year-old Dominican waitress Yuneiry Veras, was found by police, in the area of Pirate’s Cove, near a secluded beach at the back of Phase Two of the low-cost homes in the Wheeland area of Providenciales. Senior police officers said there are similarities in both cases, and Commissioner of Police James Smith said whoever did the murders is “a very violent individual, a dangerous individual”. Veras, who worked at a bar located in the Oral Selver-owned Southside Plaza (next to Mackie’s Tires) on Aviation Drive Providenciales, left work, went home and was picked up from her residence in Kew Town around 2:15 a.m., wearing a black top and a blue short skirt. Both bodies were found half-naked, only in bras, and both of them had wounds. Both women worked at bars in the Downtown area that are located a stone’s throw from each other. Both bodies were disposed in the same general area and no arrests have been made in either of the killings In the case of Veras, whose body was found in April, her clothes were located about 100 yards from where the decomposing body was found and there was “evidence of lots of blood in the area”. The searchers who found Cindy’s body, first came across her under before they found her body a few metres away. As was the case with Cindy, police sources

told that The SUN it appeared that both waitresses were brutally attacked. Police said that they are trying to see if there are any similarities between the last two cases. During a press conference at Police Headquarters on Wednesday July 13th, Acting Assistant Superintendent of Police, Ennis Grant said, “We are examining both cases to see if there are any similarities and looking at the (killer’s) method of operation and so on, but to give a definite answer it would be premature at this stage. We are looking into

details and also looking into both cases, and trying to see if there are any similarities in both of them and as soon as we’re able to determine that we will comment further. It is important that we don’t read too much into it, but at the same time we as a Police Force have a responsibility to be frank and honest with the public and we will try our best to look into both cases to see whether or not it’s a trend or whether or not there are similarities in both incidents.” When asked about the possibility of a serial killer at a press conference on Thursday, July 14th, 2016, Commissioner of Police James

Smith said: “There is great speculation of the identity of this individual who may or may not be responsible for the crimes of Ms. Veras and Ms. Arias. We see some clear links but it’s too early for us to say that there is evidence to connect to the two. That would be the subject of a detailed and clinical forensic examination by Mr. Ira Baptiste (police detective) and the team.” Smith said it is very difficult to categorize the type of individual who did the crimes without having a profile done by an expert.
