BUSINESSMAN SHOT DEAD P

olice are looking for two men in connection with the shooting death of businessman Gary Mead. Mead, an American, who has been living and working in the Turks and Caicos Islands for many years, was killed just before 9 a.m. on Friday, September 30th, 2016, while leaving Slots of Fun Gaming Parlor, which is located inside the Airport Hotel. The gaming parlor is one of many such operations in Providenciales, which Mead manages on behalf of a company called Elite Gaming. Eye-witnesses told The SUN that Mead was leaving the parlor and going back to his car when two men ran up on him and opened fire, shooting him the chest, then made their escape. A few persons witnessed the shooting while they were patronising a local restaurant across the street from the shooting that is owned by a local pastor.

When police arrived on the scene, Mead’s lifeless body was found face up and the gunshot wounds were exposed. There were two bullet holes in the car’s trunk. Police cordoned off the area along Airport Road for about two hours, holding back scores of curious onlookers, while they processed the crime scene. Among the police on the scene were deputy commissioner Marc Callagan and Assistant Superintendant Steve Snow, who is head of the Serious Crimes Investigations Department. In addition to being a gaming operations manager, Mead is a philanthropist and a licensed pilot. Since 2007, Mead has been representing the Turks and Caicos Islands at the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada, piloting his highly modified Glasair III #47 race plane in the Sport Class which consists of homebuilt aircraft reaching speeds

of in excess of 400 mph on the straightaways of the 8 mile course flying just 50 feet above the ground competing against 8 other aircraft. In the last three years, racing against 36 other aircraft, Mead had finishes in the top of the Gold Class of 4th in 2015 averaging 348.45 mph on the oval course , 2nd in 2014 and 6th in 2013. Held every September just north of Reno, the National Championship Air Races have become an institution for northern Nevada and aviation enthusiasts from around the world. For one week, the high desert north of Reno becomes home to hundreds of aircraft, their pilots and crews. In the past ten years, the event has attracted more than 150,000 spectators and generated more than $60 million a year for the region’s economy. The event features six racing classes, a large display of static aircraft and several military and civil flight demonstrations. Gary mead

FortisTCI Embarks Upon Major T&D Infrastructure Project FortisTCI wishes to advise customers that the Company will undertake a major $1.5 million transmission line relocation and upgrade project expected to last for up to eight months. The project will be carried out in three phases and includes the installation of more than one-hundred poles at various locations along Leeward Highway westbound between the Tropicana Plaza Roundabout and the FortisTCI Provo Generation Site. Phase 1 is scheduled to continue through the end of December 2016 and will have traffic implications from Tropicana Plaza to Beaches Roundabout. As a result, motorists are asked to take caution while driving on the roadways and reduce speed in dedicated work zones that are marked by traffic cones and barriers. This project will also require planned outages from time to time. The Company will

make all efforts to notify affected customers not less than 48 hours prior to any planned interruption in service. FortisTCI will issue regular public updates throughout the duration of the project. This transmission upgrade is a necessary precursor to several major Transmission and Distribution (T&D) infrastructural projects that FortisTCI is actively pursuing, including the seabed transmission cable to North Caicos and the expansion and upgrade of the Grace Bay Substation. Also, with the imminent opening of a major resort in the Long Bay area, and the projected growth based on other planned developments, this project will maintain the reliability of service while increasing the load capabilities of this section of the (T&D) system. FortisTCI would like to thank the public in advance for their understanding and cooperation. FTCI Roadwork

Walking through the Caicos islands - new developments, beautiful by nature, clean up litter

Walking in South Caicos with pupils from Iris Stubbs Primary and Marjorie Basden High Schools The Governor, Peter Beckingham, took part in the Footsteps4Good walks in South, Middle and North Caicos on 26-28 September, joining all the primary and high schools. He said afterwards: “Walking with the 250 plus schools children across South, Middle and North Caicos, and a good many teachers, businesspeople and officials was a wonderful way of saying “farewell” to these beautiful family islands. The excitement of the children, especially from the junior schools, was palpable, and if their enthusiasm translates into determination and energy later in their schooldays the future of TCI is indeed bright. I had great chats to some of the children, learning about their ambitions - basketball or soccer

player or doctor, among others - and their favourite pastimes - mainly sport! “The walk gave me a great opportunity to see developments on the islands. The new runway being built in South Caicos is a big leap of faith by the Government in the future of the island, as are the plans by the Sailrock development. I would be fascinated to return in about five years to see how the island has been transformed. “There is less obvious sign of new development in North and Middle Caicos, but there is a good deal of smaller building work and real estate activity which suggests that there is optimism in the community about prospects. A number of Parrot

With children from Charles Hubert James school, Kew

Cay staff supported the walk in North Caicos, and it was great to hear of the resort’s plans for re-investment in the property, which is one of the surest signs of a strong economy. “You can’t fail to be struck in North and Middle Caicos by the beauty of the surroundings - “beautiful by nature” is exactly the right chord to describe them. I was lucky enough to arrive at Flamingo Pond at the same time as the Royal Society of the Protection of Birds (RSPB) secondee to the National Trust, Simon Busutill, who with his telescope was able to show me a flock of around 1,000 flamingos : a fabulous sight. Simon also took me with a local guide to walk around the Wades Green plantation, which is being cared for so well by the

National Trust and has some of the eery charm of the very different Ankor Watt remains in Cambodia, where the collapsed temples are also enhanced by the trees struggling through the buildings. The only jarring note on the walk was the volume of litter. In two minutes between Whitby and Kew I counted 60 glass or plastic bottles: imagine how many there must be on both sides of the 3 mile road! As one of my walking companions remarked we desperately need a “Clean Up” education campaign across the islands: if the next government promised that, they would be doing everyone in TCI a great service, before we no longer deserve the beautiful by nature brand”.

Human Rights Commission officials attend conference in London

Director with Bermudian colleagues The Turks and Caicos Islands Human Rights Commission Chairman Mrs. Cheryl Astwood-Tull and Director Doreen Quelch Missick attended the recent Human Rights Conference in London. The conference was sponsored by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Overseas Territories Directorate and was the first of its kind whereby representatives from the various human rights institutions from the UK and Overseas Territories were in attendance. The broad aims of the conference was to explore the key priorities, opportunities and challenges faced by Overseas Human Rights Commissions in the execution of their responsibilities as well as

their role within the wider society. Participants from all the territories were given the opportunity to promote a shared understanding of the UK and OT shared international human rights obligations, compliance monitoring and how HRCs can more effectively engage in the process. Some critical topical human rights issues e.g. Women and Children’s Rights, Illegal Migration, LGBT etc. were discussed and how the HRCs can play an important role in championing and/or developing public awareness and engagement in these areas. The TCI Human Rights Commission played an integral role in the discussions and was very pleased to cite its successes obtained over the

years, it must be noted that the TCI HRC became the second UK Overseas Caribbean Territory to establish a full fledge Human Rights Commission, second only to Bermuda. In addition, TCI is the only OT that has the extension of all Six (6) Core UK United Nations International Conventions. The HRC is proud of its continued relationship, mentorship and close relationship forged with Bermuda and the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commissions with the NIHRC providing training opportunities for staff and board members. The TCI HRC was complemented for its robust educational and outreach programs

and for its active engagement with the various government and nongovernment institutions for the protection and promotion of people’s rights. The TCI HRC will continue to provide support for colleagues in the remaining OTs who do not yet have Human Rights Commissions in their country and felt proud to know that St. Helena used the TCI HRC as a model in helping to set up their recent established Human Rights Commission. For matters pertaining to human rights, please visit the HRC office located at Cabot House, Graceway Plaza, telephone number 649 941-5343.

Environmental Health Dpt. now utilizing in2care traps to fight mosquito population The Environmental Health Department recently received 100 new In2Care mosquito traps. These traps are intended to be used around premises where the aedes aegypti mosquito is most frequent. Mr. Jeffery Weisberg of Intuitive Pest Management visited the Turks and Caicos Islands to train members of the Environmental Health Staff in the use of the traps. The In2Care Trap is a novel and green control product for mosquitoes. The traps

are safe for use in the environment and only affect the mosquitoes. The traps are designed to target Aedes mosquitoes that are ready to lay their eggs. The mosquito eggs when laid in the trap, hatches into larva, but do not emerge into adult mosquitoes. The adult female, while laying her eggs become contaminated with the chemicals in the trap, which she then transfers to other breeding sites on her legs and subsequently kills other mosquito larvae and pupae.

In addition to the adult female mosquito spreading the chemicals to other breeding sites, the mosquito herself becomes ill and is less likely to bite humans and eventually succumbs to the infection and dies within 8-10 days. According to studies, the trap utilizes the knowledge of the mosquito behavior to target hard to reach or hidden breeding sites that are often difficult to access by vector control officers using conventional methods. The science behind allowing the mosquito

to live 8-10 days between using the trap and death is to utilize the knowledge of the mosquito behavior of laying her eggs in several breeding sites during her lifetime. This way the mosquito not only contaminates other sites killing her offspring and the offspring of other mosquitoes but effectively treating hidden breeding sites the vector control teams might not find. Research has shown that the traps can reduce the mosquito populations by as much as 60%.

One of the reasons for that is when I look at my story overcoming my physical challenges when I look at the people in my life and when I think of all the Turks and Caicos Islanders that have sewed into my life because of my

2nd Annual Sand Jam to kick off November 12th at Rickies on the Beach The newly formed ‘Music is Life’ foundation in getting ready to stage its 2nd fund-raising event, which is an all-day beach party called Sand Jam. The event will take place at the Flamingo Café in Grace Bay, on Saturday November 12th, 2016. Headlining the event again this year is Roots Rock Reggae Star “Might Mystic”. The day will also feature performances by many local performers such as V6 Band, Keno & Kaz, Elroy & Daz, Albernika Williams and the Clement Howell & Long Bay Hills School Choirs. In an interview, Donna W. Davis told The SUN that they are really excited about hosting the 2nd Annual Sand Jam/ beach festival at Rickies and is seeking the support of everyone in the community to make this event even bigger this year. The ‘Music is Life’ is a programme founded to provide youths more opportunity to explore and develop their musical talent. The goal of the foundation is to provide opportunities through funding and

Pictured here is the “Might Mystic” band with Deputy Premier Hon. Akierra Missick at last year’s event at Rickies on the Beach exposure to those who so deserve it with their first beneficiary being Clement Howell. Davis said that the concept behind Sand Jam 2015 was actually born out of an idea that she and Karen Whitt had for a music foundation

to support children in the Turks and Caicos Islands, who are widely talented with their music, but do not really have the education, opportunity or the means to peruse their careers in the entertainment and arts program. From that the idea of ‘Music

is Life’ was born. This is a non-profit foundation which will accept donations and be a part of various fundraisers in order to support these initiatives. Davis added: This Island has a long history of music but for years now we haven’t taken advantage of our two greatest assets, the beautiful water and the beautiful beach and put music on it. The vision of Sand Jam is to bring everyone together, tourists, expats and locals in a festival on the beach and reggae music is that worldwide communicator gatherer that just brings everyone of every nationality together. We wanted to do a beach festival and at the same time realizing that there is so much talent on this island but sometimes there’s no opportunity to explore that talent.” Davis said that the event did well last year and they are hoping to do even better this year and is hoping to reach a goal of $20,000 to donate to the ‘Music is Life’ foundation. The event will be staged November 12th at Rickies on the Beach and organizers of the event are asking the community to come out and support this great cause.

I can definitely say that the experience has been wonderful having worked in the Turks and Caicos, Jamaica, and St. Lucia.” The new managers were selected from a pool of 1500 applicants two years ago and include a number of Jamaicans as well as nationals from St. Lucia, the Bahamas, Grenada, Barbados, Antigua, the Turks and Caicos Islands and both previous employees of the Sandals/ATL Group and new recruits. “My passion is helping people especially my fellow Turks & Caicos Youth and I hope my preference my determination will serve as in inspiration to those who choose to follow in the similar foot step. Beaches Turks and Caicos is the best platform to make my dreams come true in touching the lives of its almost 2000 Talents every day. ” Musgrove concluded. The Management Trainee Programme (MTP) identifies and grooms outstanding young recruits to become managers in the company through a two-year programme of hands-on learning and training at resorts across the region. All participants experience rotations through various positions and departments across the group before selecting an area of specialization. The MTP is the centerpiece of SRI’s Management Succession Planning Strategy and is one component of the company’s ongoing efforts to invest in capacity-building throughout its operations. Speaking at the graduation ceremony held at Sandals Ochi Beach Resort, Wayne Cummings, director of business processes and administration, himself a product of the MTP, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to investing in young leaders. “This Group is on the move”, he said, “ this Group is growing and for us to grow and evolve we need to invest in people. We need to invest in the new leaders of the Group.” As the graduates move into their new roles within the company, Cummings urged them to always remember their journey and treat their colleagues with respect. He said, “Remember the things you went through, remember your subordinates. They are your colleagues and they are even more important than you. Have a very healthy respect for them as you seek to lead them.” He also reminded the new managers of the limitless potential within each of them as well as within the company. “You are competent, you are able and you are at the right place, at the right time and with the right company. The journey has just begun. We are a company on the move”, he emphasized. In delivering his address as valedictorian, Kent D’Hayle expressed pride in both himself and his colleagues for successfully completing the rigorous programme. Barbados withstood Matthew’s test – Brathwaite

Minister of Home Affairs Adriel Brathwaite says he is generally satisfied that Barbados withstood the test of Tropical Storm Matthew. The system developed out of a tropical disturbance on Wednesday forcing the authorities to effect a national shutdown as the island was pounded with heavy rains and winds. As a result the island suffered some infrastructural damage. However, speaking on national television this morning after the official all-clear was issued at 5:45 AM Thursday, Brathwaite, who is also the country’s Attorney General, said he was happy that there was no evidence of any loss of life or limb. “I think I am satisfied that everything worked as we had anticipated. When I left the EOC [Emergency Operations Centre] this morning about one o’clock. It was just to ensure that on the roads for example, we got some teams out to clear a few roads, so that when we gave the all-clear this morning we would be satisfied that people can traverse as safely as possible,” he

said. However, Brathwaite did acknowledge that it was not all smooth sailing during the passage of the storm. “I’m fairly satisfied with what I have seen in the last two days . . .[but] maybe we had a bit too much traffic on the roads. We did have reports of one or two businesses opening. As you may recall, yesterday morning we did not have a lot of rain and people probably took that as an opportunity to go about their regular business even though we said to them that we do have a national shutdown, we will have rain, we will have wind etc . . . and I think this is the thing that we wanted to prevent. We wanted as much as possible to ensure that people’s lives are saved,” he explained. The Government spokesman also said he concerned about some of the behaviour exhibited on social media, but admitted, “We can’t control social media. It is good and it is bad. We see reports of some concern but we just can’t respond to everything

Home Affairs Minister Adriel Brathwaite and we can only urge Barbadians that when we have occasions like this, to listen to the official reports , focus on the official reports. “You can’t just focus on what your neighbour sends you and believe that that is accurate,” he stressed. Brathwaite said it was a question of “safety and reasonableness”. “That is why we give certain timelines,” he said, while acknowledging that there was a need for the emergency officials to improve their communication with the public. ‘ . . . If anything, we don’t want to have the kind of panic that I saw in terms of gas stations being filled because it is interpreted that all businesses have to close at six o’clock. That is one of the areas that I think that we have to look at in terms of our messaging to ensure that the correct messaging goes out into the community. We want to get the message right,” Brathwaite said. With the all clear now issued, officials say schools, with the exception of the University of the West Indies, will remain closed today. However, the Grantley Adams International Airport is due to re-open this morning, as well as commercial businesses and the island’s public services, including the law courts and the state-run transportation system.

Cop caught on camera stealing from luggage A POLICE officer who was caught on camera while stealing items belonging to airline passengers as he searched their luggage at the ANR Robinson International Airport in Tobago eight years ago has been ordered to pay a total of $150,000 by a High Court judge. Should he faulter in making any of the monthly payments until the fine is paid in full, he will be made to serve a prison term. Justice Gillian Lucky was stern in her words as she passed sentence on Brian “Bellies” Stephens, of Baja Road, Maracas, St Joseph, who admitted to committing the three counts of misbehaviour in public office. The judge, presiding at the Hall of Justice in Port of Spain on Thursday, said the former officer breached the trust that was placed in him and used his position of authority for self gain. Such acts are frowned upon and a clear message must be sent to other people in authority who intend to use their position for such purposes that there are serious consequences for such actions, said Lucky. “One cannot have such powers and authority and abuse those powers for personal gains,” said the judge. She said some may perceive the non-custodial sentence as a lenient one given the prevelence and seriousness of such crimes, but

The ANR Robinson International Airport, Tobago she pointed out that Stephens, now that he has a criminal conviction against his name, can no longer be a member of the Police Service and has also lost all his benefits as a member of the service. Stephens was charged with committing the acts on three occasions in October 2008, after he was caught on camera opening and searching the suitcases lodged in the baggage room of the airport and stealing items including clothing, cameras and perfume. Previous to that, British tourists who were vacationing in Tobago, upon their return to Gatwick in the United Kingdom, discovered items missing from their luggage. Reports were made and an

investigation headed by Snr Supt Totaram Dookie was launched. During the investigation, a cell phone was secretly used to film Stephens in the act. Before the trial could begin in August this year Stephens requested a Goodyear Hearing where the trial judge gave an indication of the possible maximum sentence that could be imposed should a guilty plea be entered. At the hearing, Lucky indicated that Stephens would not face a custodial sentence should he plead guilty to the offences. He elected to do so on September 20. Lucky said what stood out to the court was even after Stephens was confronted with the video evidence, he still attempted to

conceal the crime by telephoning a friend to have him remove the stolen items from his (Stephens’) home. Stephens, who was represented by defence attorney Larry Williams, was ordered to pay $50,000 immediately and monthly instalments of $5,000 intil the remainder of the fine is fully paid. In addition to that, he was also made to sign a bond in the sum of $50,000 to keep the peace for five years. The judge also highly commended the investigative skills of Dookie and the officers involved saying that the cogent and compelling evidence may have given the accused little or no option but to enter guilty pleas.

Dominica PM calls on LIAT to show more compassion to passengers ROSEAU, Dominica – Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit is urging the cash-strapped regional airline, LIAT, to improve its services to passengers saying “there must be a greater sense of humanism” in the way the airline conducts its operations. Skerrit, speaking on the stateowned DBS radio, was commenting on the decision by the St. Vincent and the Grenadines government not to pump additional funds into the airline until it improves its services to the island. The main shareholder governments of the Antigua-based airline are Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Last week, St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves held talks with a LIAT management team, headed by the acting Chief Executive Officer, Julie Reifer-Jones, two weeks after his administration wrote the airline demanding talks over what it described

as its poor service. The talks in Kingstown last Wednesday were aimed at resolving “LIAT’s deteriorating service experienced by Vincentians” and in a statement afterwards, Gonsalves highlighted a number of challenges, including the lack of information on delays and cancellation of flights to the travelling public. Prime Minister Skerrit said Gonsalves has been at the forefront pioneering the support for LIAT over the last 12 years. “I believe all of us in the Caribbean should have greatest admiration and gratitude for the prime minister of St. Vincent for his efforts. But this is a challenge which LIAT and the Caribbean have been confronted with, the issue of service” Skerrit said while passengers could accept there could be a delay or even cancellations of flights “but we have to show greater regard and respect to the consumer….

Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit “It is not because, well, that’s the only flight you could get between Barbados and Dominica or between Antigua and Dominica or between St. Vincent and Barbados one should just say, you can’t do without us and treat you the way however they wish. “It is a service. People are not

flying on LIAT for free. We are paying. Every one of us who travel on LIAT pay and I daresay a substantial fee for this, you know. So they have to respect the consumer, the customers. They have to show greater empathy to them when flights are cancelled or delayed. There must be a greater sense of humanism in the way they do things…”. Skerrit acknowledged that LIAT is “important to all of us and therefore they must recognise that they have a greater responsibility”. Earlier this week, St. Lucia Prime Minister Allen Chastanet said his administration is undertaking initiatives to encourage an open sky policy and introduce competition. “Our government is in discussion with Seaborne Airlines with the hope of attracting a Puerto Rico flight here. We are also having discussions with Caribbean Airlines,” said Prime Minister Allen Chastanet, a critic of the cash-strapped regional airline, LIAT.

Businessman jailed for life KINGSTON – A 52-year-old businessman has been sentenced to life imprisonment after he was convicted of decapitating the 26-year-old mother of his child, Nicole Heron in 2012. Trevor Taffe maintained his innocence throughout the trial. But in sentencing him on Friday, Justice Evan Brown, sitting in the Home Circuit Court, recommended that he serve 20 years before he is eligible for parole.

Taffe was found guilty by a sevenmember jury on July 19. During the trial, the prosecution led evidence that Heron visited Taffe’s home in Havendale, St Andrew, on April 3, and when she could not be located later her family filed a missing person report with the police. During a search at Taffe’s home, burnt articles of female clothing were found, as well as Heron’s decomposing body with

several stab wounds floating in a septic pit. The body was later identified by family members and through DNA. Justice Brown said the murder was no ordinary killing and that Heron was savagely chopped before her head was severed. He said a section of her face was chopped and had wounds to her vagina. He described the killing as premeditated, adding that animal lovers would not treat their animals like that.

PM says no plans for state of emergency

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Jamaica government has ruled out imposing a state of emergency, at least for now, as it deals with an escalation of criminal activities in western section of the island. Prime Minister Andrew Holness told a news conference that he remains confident that the security forces have the capacity to effectively address the issue. “The government is not afraid to call a state of emergency but at this point, a state of emergency, in my mind, is not a tool that needs to be deployed. I think the police force has the capacity, our army has the capacity…I think with the other strategies and plans we have in place, we will be improving the capacity of the police and the army to respond,” he told reporters. Holness said he does not want a sense of siege to take over Jamaicans through the implementation of a state of emergency, but will be keeping that option open. “If the government deems it

necessary, we will, but we are not at that point so I don’t want criminals to feel that we have any hesitation if it is required. Jamaica is a functioning state, we do have elevated levels of crime…It is associated with the phase of development that we find ourselves in. The truth is that much of our crimes is driven by economic motives.” Prime Minister Holness told reporters Sunday that once the local economy starts growing at an acceptable rate, crime should fall. “One has to be careful, however, that in tackling crime you don’t shut down the entire economy…you need to be pulling people out of crime and into jobs and so the government is putting into place those strategies,” he said. Holness also used the occasion to appeal to persons with information on criminal activities to bring it to the police. Prime Minister Andrew Holness “Information is probably the the citizens don’t share the information. greatest weapon against the criminal. “Someone knows the gunman that did The criminal exists and thrives in the killing…probably washed his bloody areas where he is protected because clothes…probably hid him somewhere,

Investigators seek clues on why New Jersey train failed to stop Investigators found the black box recorder as they sifted through the twisted wreckage of a commuter train that failed to stop before plowing into a Hoboken, New Jersey, station, killing a woman on the platform and injuring scores of people. The event recorder was removed late on Thursday from the locomotive at the rear of the NJ Transit train that slammed through an end barrier and into the terminal building during the morning rush hour, a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board said on Friday. Debris was preventing investigators from reaching the other

recorder in the train’s front car, he said. The recorders hold data that includes the train’s speed, throttle position and use of brakes and could offer clues as to why the train, crowded with commuters, failed to stop. “Right now there are some challenges to the investigation with respect to accessing the wreckage,” the spokesman said. Train No. 1614, originating in Spring Valley, New York, was at the end of its hour-long southward journey when it crashed, toppling support columns in the early 20th century building. Witnesses described a scene of horror and chaos. New York Governor Andrew

Cuomo said on Thursday the train came into the station too fast, but it was unclear why. It was too early to say whether an anti-collision system known as positive train control (PTC) could have prevented the crash, he said. PTC is designed to halt a train if the driver misses a stop signal, and advocates say it helps to address human error. WOMAN, 34, KILLED NJ Transit on Friday suspended train service in and out of the Hoboken terminal, one of the busiest transit hubs in the New York area, accommodating some 60,000 people a day. NTSB Vice Chairman Bella Dinh-Zarr said at a news conference

the investigation was expected to take seven to 10 days. The crash killed a 34-year-old Hoboken woman who was standing on the platform when the train slammed through the barrier, jumped off the tracks and skidded across the station concourse, the New Jersey medical examiner’s office said. Another 114 people were injured, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie told reporters. NJ Transit said the train’s engineer, or driver, was Thomas Gallagher, a 29year veteran of the railway. He was taken to hospital for minor injuries and released, and is cooperating with investigators, officials said, without providing further details.

Malaysian flight MH17 downed by Russian-made missile: prosecutors Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 was shot down by a missile fired from a launcher brought into Ukraine from Russia and located in a village held by pro-Russian rebels, international prosecutors said on Wednesday. The findings counter Moscow’s suggestion that the passenger plane, en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur in July 2014, was brought down by Ukraine’s military rather than the separatists. All 298 people on board, most of them Dutch, were killed. The conclusions were based on thousands of wiretaps, photographs, witness statements and forensic Debris from a Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 tests during more than two years of that crashed on Thursday lies on the ground inquiries into an incident which led near the village of Rozsypne in the Donetsk to a sharp rise in tensions between region Russia and the West. said the findings pointed to Russia’s Among the key findings were: “direct involvement”. The investigators, from the Netherlands, Australia, Belgium, Malaysia and Ukraine, said they had not had access to Moscow’s radar images but would gladly include a Russian contribution to the inquiry. Ukrainian and Western officials, citing intelligence intercepts, have long blamed the pro-Russian rebels for the incident, which played a big part in a decision by the European Union and United States to impose sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine conflict and has damaged DutchRussian economic ties. SUSPECTS In reaction to the investigators’ findings, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte called on Russia “to lend all possible cooperation” to the inquiry, which will now shift its focus to identifying individual suspects. Prosecutors said that while they had not brought charges against culprits or established a court, they had identified 100 individuals of interest in relation to the incident on July 17, 2014. “Of a number of them, we know pretty exactly what their role and position was, for instance those who organized the arrival of the Buk

rocket and who were in charge of the transport that day,” said Fred Westerbeke, chief prosecutor at the Netherlands National Prosecutor’s office. “We know exactly what happened, but who exactly was in charge, and whether it was done intentionally, there the investigation is still continuing,” Westerbeke said. He declined to specify the nationality of any potential suspects, and called on witnesses to come forward and help determine who gave the order to shoot the plane down. Victims’ families, who were informed of the findings earlier in the day, were skeptical about the investigation’s progress. Silene Fredriksz, whose son Bryce was on the airplane with his girlfriend, Daisy Oehlers, said Russia would never hand over any suspects voluntarily. Moscow was “going to have to be put under intense pressure, with sanctions - that’s the only way to make it possible”, she added. A civilian investigation by the Dutch Safety Board also concluded last year that MH17 was hit by a Buk missile fired from eastern Ukraine, but did not specify who fired it. The board criticized Ukraine’s government for leaving its airspace open to civilian traffic.

Clinton assails Trump in blistering U.S. presidential debate Democrat Hillary Clinton accused Republican Donald Trump of racism, sexism and tax avoidance on Monday, putting him on the defensive during a 2016 U.S. presidential debate rife with blistering insults and short on policy. Trump, a real estate tycoon making his first run for public office, said Clinton’s long years of service represented “bad experience” with few results and said she lacked the stamina to serve as commander in chief. Clinton was under pressure to perform well after a recent bout with pneumonia and a drop in opinion polls, but her long days of preparation appeared to pay off in her highly anticipated first 90-minute showdown with Trump. Trump, a former reality TV star who eschewed a lot of debate practice, was assertive and focused early on, interrupting Clinton repeatedly. As the night wore on, he became testy and less disciplined in front of the crowd at host Hofstra University and a televised audience that could have reached upwards of a record 100 million people. A CNN/ORC snap poll said 62 percent of respondents felt Clinton won and 27 percent believed Trump was the winner. On Tuesday morning, Trump called it “the debate of debates” and promised to be tougher on Clinton at their next meeting on Oct. 9. “I may hit her harder in certain ways,” Trump said in a telephone interview with “Fox & Friends.” He made clear he pulled punches by not bringing up former President Bill Clinton’s sexual scandals out of deference to the couple’s daughter, Chelsea Clinton, who was in the audience. Trump also said contentious issues involving Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state were not addressed on Monday night, including her use of a private computer server for

government emails, the deadly attack in Benghazi, Libya, or the Clinton Foundation charity. In signs that investors awarded the debate to Clinton, Asian shares recovered after an early bout of nerves while the Mexican peso jumped on Tuesday. Her chances in the Nov. 8 election also improved in online betting markets. ‘GREAT DEBATE’ “You feel good tonight?” Clinton asked supporters afterward. “I sure do. Clinton enlists former foe Sanders in appeal for youth votes in U.S. presidential race

U.S. Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders U.S. Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton shared a stage with former rival Senator Bernie Sanders on Wednesday to appeal for youth votes in the Nov. 8 election as opinion polls show a close race with Republican Donald Trump. Clinton told an audience at the University of New Hampshire that she would make college affordable if she wins the White House, the kind of promise that won Sanders many young supporters during the Democratic nominating contest. “We should and we

Israel’s Peres won Nobel prize but his Mideast peace dream remained elusive Pippa Middleton

UK royal Kate’s sister Pippa wins court ban on hacked photos Pippa Middleton, younger sister of Britain’s Duchess of Cambridge, won a court injunction on Wednesday banning publication of 3,000 photos allegedly hacked from her iCloud account. No details of the photos have been made public but newspapers have speculated they included images of the Duchess, Kate, her husband and future king Prince William and the couple’s children Prince George and Princess Charlotte, who are currently touring Canada. The injunction obtained at the High Court by Pippa Middleton, 33, and her fiance James Matthews, 40, blocks publication of the photos or any other information that might have been taken. “The evidence points toward this having been a flagrant and dishonest act which has caused the claimant some considerable distress,” said Middleton’s lawyer, Adam Wolanski who said there was evidence that there had been a hack. Neither Middleton nor Matthews were in court. Website designer Nathan Wyatt, 35, of Wellingborough, central England, has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of a Computer Misuse Act offence in connection with the case. He has been ordered to return to a south London police station in November. The Sun newspaper reported last week it had been contacted via the WhatsApp encrypted messaging service and offered intimate pictures of Middleton in return for 50,000 pounds ($65,000). Wolanski said they were not concerned about the photos appearing in Britain’s national newspapers but that the problem was “rogue elements” on the internet.

Congress rejects Obama veto, Saudi September 11 bill becomes law

Congress on Wednesday overwhelmingly rejected President Barack Obama’s veto of legislation allowing relatives of the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks to sue Saudi Arabia, the first veto override of his presidency, just four months before it ends. The House of Representatives voted 348-77 against the veto, hours after the Senate rejected it 97-1, meaning the “Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act” will become law. The vote was a blow to Obama as well as to Saudi Arabia, one of the United States’ longest-standing allies in the Arab world, and some lawmakers who supported the override already plan to revisit the issue. Obama said he thought the Congress had made a mistake, reiterating his belief that the legislation set a dangerous precedent and indicating that he thought political considerations were behind the vote. “If you’re perceived as voting against 9/11 families right before an election, not surprisingly, that’s a hard vote for people to take. But it would have been the right thing to do,” he said on CNN. Obama’s 11 previous vetoes were all sustained. But this time almost all his strongest Democratic supporters in Congress joined Republicans to oppose him in one of their last actions before leaving Washington to campaign for the Nov. 8 election. “Overriding a presidential veto is something we don’t take lightly, but it was important in this case that the families of the victims of 9/11 be allowed to pursue justice, even if that pursuit causes some diplomatic discomforts,” Senator Charles Schumer, a top Senate Democrat, said

Senators Chuck Schumer, (D-NY) (L), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and John Cornyn (R-TX) in a statement. Schumer represents New York, site of the World Trade Center and home to many of the nearly 3,000 people killed in the 2001 attacks, survivors and families of victims. The law, known as JASTA, passed the House and Senate without objections earlier this year. Support was fueled by impatience in Congress with Saudi Arabia over its human rights record, promotion of a severe form of Islam tied to militancy and failure to do more to ease the international refugee crisis. The law grants an exception to the legal principle of sovereign immunity in cases of terrorism on U.S. soil, clearing the way for lawsuits seeking damages from the Saudi government. Riyadh has denied longstanding suspicions that it backed the hijackers who attacked the United States in 2001. Fifteen of the 19 hijackers were Saudi nationals. Family members had tied their last push for the bill to the 15th anniversary of the attacks this month,

demonstrating outside the White House and Capitol. On Wednesday, two fire trucks displayed a giant U.S. flag outside the Senate. “We rejoice in this triumph and look forward to our day in court and a time when we may finally get more answers regarding who was truly behind the attacks,” Terry Strada, whose husband died in the attacks, said in a statement. RISK TO TROOPS? Obama argued that JASTA could expose U.S. companies, troops and officials to lawsuits if other countries passed reciprocal legislation, and may anger important allies. He called Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid and wrote a letter to him explaining that he strongly believed enacting JASTA into law would be detrimental to U.S. interests. Reid became the only senator to side with Obama. Some lawmakers said the White House, which has a history of

poor relations with Congress, had waited too long to fight the bill. The Sept. 11 families have received more than $7 billion, but bill backers said their intention was to allow lawsuits to punish any government that backs terrorism on U.S. soil. “This bill was carefully negotiated over more than six years,” Representative Jerrold Nadler, another New York Democrat, told the House. The issue, however, may not be finished. At least 28 senators signed a letter to JASTA’s sponsors, Schumer and Republican Senator John Cornyn, asking that they work with them to mitigate any potential unintended national security and foreign policy consequences. The Saudi government financed an extensive lobbying campaign against the legislation. U.S. corporations including General Electric Co and Dow Chemical Co also opposed it, as did the European Union and other U.S. allies. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter and General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, opposed the bill and CIA Director John Brennan said JASTA had “grave implications” for national security. Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton’s vice presidential running mate, and Bernie Sanders, an independent and former Democratic White House contender, did not vote. Override opponents in the House included Representative Mac Thornberry, Republican chairman of the Armed Services committee, and Adam Smith, its ranking Democrat, citing concern about U.S. forces overseas.

Philippines boxing icon Pacquiao used drugs as a teen but backs Duterte Philippines boxing icon Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao says he took all kinds of drugs as a teenager but fully supports President Rodrigo Duterte, whose vicious anti-drugs campaign has led to the killing of more than 3,000 people, mostly users and pushers, in three months. Pacquiao, now a senator and a close ally of the president, also said Duterte was anointed by God to discipline the Filipino people and his authority must be respected. “The president, he doesn’t know my experience with drugs,” said Pacquiao, 37, adding he was confident it wouldn’t damage their close relationship. “He always gives a chance to people who want to be changed,” said the boxer-turned-lawmaker in an interview in his senate office. “I tried drugs...many kinds of drugs, all kinds of drugs,” he said, dressed in the traditional white Filipino barong shirt and trousers. Pacquiao said this phase lasted for years “before I became a champion”. Duterte, who took office on June 30, has made the war on drugs the central part of his presidency, saying narcotics are destroying the nation of 100 million people. A total of 3,171 people have been killed since then, including users and pushers, nearly two thirds by unknown assailants and the rest in legitimate

police operations, according to police. The friendship between the boxer known as “The Destroyer” and the president known as “The Punisher” dates back at least 15 years as Pacquiao tells it, to a boxing ring in Davao, where Duterte helped organize one of his fights. “He helped me a lot. He helped me with the promotion when I started in boxing. One of my fights held in Davao, he sponsored it,” said Pacquiao, a southpaw who has been an eight-division world champion. “He helped with the promotion, financially as well.” Pacquiao has the initials of a group called Guardians Mindanao Brotherhood tattooed on his wrist, as does Duterte, according to media reports. “It’s a fraternity,” Pacquiao said. Guardians Brotherhood started as a soldiers group that was later disbanded. Pacquiao was born in the town of Kibawe in the Mindanao region of the southern Philippines, about 80 km (50 miles) from Davao city, where Duterte was mayor and congressman since 1988. Dunkin’ partners with Coca-Cola on bottled coffee

Samsung recovers over 60 percent of recalled Note 7s in South Korea, U.S. Samsung Electronics Co (005930.KS) said on Tuesday it has got back more than 60 percent of recalled Galaxy Note 7 smartphones sold in South Korea and the United States, suggesting it is making progress in its attempts to recover from the crisis. In a statement, Samsung said it was focused on replacing all affected devices “as quickly and efficiently” as possible and reiterated its request that customers affected by the current recall should power off their device and turn them in. The world’s top smartphone maker announced on Sept. 2 a global recall of at least 2.5 million Note 7 smartphones in 10 markets due to faulty batteries causing some phones to catch fire. The company says replacement devices it began issuing in midSeptember use safe batteries. Samsung hopes to take the faulty products off the market as soon as possible in order to limit further damage to its reputation and resume sales of the flagship device ahead of the key holiday shopping season in major markets such as the United States. But the nearly month-

A Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Note 7 new smartphone is displayed at its store in Seoul, South Korea, September 2, 2016 long recall process has provided additional stumbles and embarrassment for the firm. Reports of Note 7 fires and damages have continued after the recall announcement, while aviation authorities around the world issued warnings or outright bans on the use or charging of the Note 7 on aircraft. Samsung was also forced to push back the start of Note 7 sales in South Korea by three days to Oct. 1 due to relatively

slow progress in the recall in its home market. Some analysts say the cost of the recall and lost sales could wipe off nearly $5 billion in revenues for Samsung this year. Samsung said around 90 percent of customers who turned in their device through the exchange program have opted for a replacement Note 7, but it remains unclear how strong demand from new customers would be when sales resume.

BlackBerry outsourcing smartphone design in strategic shift; shares up

A posed Blackberry Pearl smartphone is seen at the Research in Motion (RIM) headquarters in Waterloo, November 16, 2009 BlackBerry Ltd will outsource the development and design of its flagship smartphone, an industry it helped pioneer, as it bets its future on software and services, the Canadian technology company said on Wednesday. The new helped send BlackBerry shares up 3 percent in premarket trading, even as it reported a sharp drop in quarterly revenue. The company also said Chief Financial Officer James Yersh would leave effective Oct. 1 for personal reasons, with former Sybase executive Steven Capelli replacing him. BlackBerry said that as part of its software strategy, it would outsource all internal hardware development. It announced a licensing deal with Indonesia’s BB Merah Putih to manufacture, distribute and promote its branded devices in that country. “This is an entirely sensible decision and probably an overdue one,” said IDC technology analyst John Jackson. “Software revenue and the margin profile associated with that is where the focus should have been, and now can be.” Chief Executive Officer John Chen has shifted BlackBerry’s focus to selling software that companies and governments use to manage their mobile devices. It previously outsourced production of its handsets to other manufacturers and ditched its own operating system in favor of Android for its two newest devices. Morningstar analyst Ali Mogharabi said Wednesday’s news was reassuring “even though some of the growth seen in software and services revenues comes from last year’s acquisition of Good Technology.” BlackBerry’s revenue in the highermargin software and services unit was $156 million in its second quarter ended on Aug. 31, compared with $105 million for the device business. The company said 81 percent of its software and services revenue in the quarter was recurring. BlackBerry reported a net loss of $372 million, or 71 cents a share, compared with a year-earlier profit of $51 million, or 24 cents a share. Excluding $147 million in charges from its reorganization, the company said it said broke even. On that basis, analysts had on average expected a loss of 5 cents a share, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Revenue fell to $334 million from $490 million, missing analysts’ estimates of $393.75 million. The company raised its full-year earnings outlook to a range of breakeven to a loss of 5 cents a share, excluding special items, after refinancing its debt and as margins improved. It previously expected a 15-cent loss.

Gross domestic product expanded at a 1.4 percent annual rate, the Commerce Department said on Thursday in its third estimate of GDP. That was up from the 1.1 percent rate it reported last month and higher than analysts’ expectations. The revision incorporated data that showed businesses cut investments in buildings and equipment less than the government previously estimated, while they sank more money into research and development. Other data released by the Commerce Department showed America’s trade deficit for goods shrank in August, boding well for third-quarter growth. “It now appears that growth is slowly making its way back on to firmer ground,” said Michael Feroli, an economist at JPMorgan in New York. Growth in overall business investment was revised to show a 1 percent annual rate of expansion, the first gain since the third quarter of last year, suggesting the worst of an energy-sector-led slump in business investment might be over. Aetna to offer Apple Watch at a discount to certain customers

Daiki Shimizu tries an Apple Watch Series 2 after it went on sale at the Apple Store at Tokyo’s Omotesando shopping district, Japan, September 16, 2016 U.S. health insurer Aetna Inc said it would offer some customers discounts on Apple Inc’s smartwatch, marking the first deal made by the tech giant with an insurer for its devices. Aetna, which has about 23 million members in the United States, will also give away the Apple Watch for free to its nearly 50,000 employees, Aetna said in a statement on Tuesday. The deal could help Apple boost the appeal of its Watch to potential customers as the company looks to target health and fitness conscious users with its new device. Aetna will discount a significant portion of the cost, and will offer users monthly payment options to pay off the remaining amount. The discounts on the devices will vary for customers, according to Aetna spokesman Ethan Slavin. However, reaction to the

second edition of the Apple Watch has been muted since its launch earlier this month with the device likely to remain a niche offering, according to some analysts. Apple shipped 1.6 million units of the original Apple Watch, in the second quarter, down by 56.7 percent from last year, according to research firm IDC. In comparison, Fitbit Inc shipped 5.7 million units in that period. Aetna is also developing health applications for Apple’s devices that will remind users to take their medications, order refills for prescriptions and message or call their doctor. The applications, which will use Apple Wallet to allow customers to pay their bills, will be available early next year.

home building also sank. The U.S. dollar was little changed against a basket of currencies while yields on U.S. government debt were higher. The GDP data is unlikely to have much impact on the near-term outlook for monetary policy although it could make Fed policymakers more confident the U.S. economy is resisting weaker growth abroad. Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen repeated on Wednesday that Fed policymakers expect to raise interest rates by the end of the year because they worry that gathering steam in the U.S. labor market could fuel inflation. New claims for unemployment benefits rose slightly last week but remained at levels consistent with a healthy job market, according to a separate report from the Labor Department. The Commerce Department is due to release new inflation data on Friday. The government also reported that after-tax corporate profits fell at a 1.9 percent rate in the second quarter, a smaller drop than initially estimated. With profits declining, an alternative measure of growth, gross domestic income, or GDI, dropped at a 0.2 percent rate in the second quarter. GDI measures the economy’s performance from the income side.

Some Yahoo users close accounts amid fears breach could have ripple effects Many Yahoo users rushed on Friday to close their accounts and change passwords as experts warned that the fallout from one of the largest cyber breaches in history could spill beyond the internet company’s services. After Yahoo disclosed on Thursday that hackers had stolen the encrypted passwords and personal details of more than 500 million accounts in 2014, thousands of users took to social media to express anger that it had taken the company two years to uncover the data breach. Several users said they were closing their accounts. “We’re probably just going to dump Yahoo altogether,” said Rick Hollister, 56, who owns a private investigation firm in Tallahassee, Florida. “They should have been more on top of this.” Due to the scale of the Yahoo breach, and because users often recycle passwords and security answers across multiple services, cyber security experts warned the impact of the hack could reverberate throughout the internet. Several users said they were scrambling to change log-in information, not just for Yahoo but for multiple internet accounts with the same passwords. Accounts at banks, retailers and elsewhere could be vulnerable. “I suppose a hacker could make the connection between my Yahoo and Gmail,” said Scott Braun, 47, who created a Yahoo email when he was setting up a shop on online retailer Etsy. “They both use my first and last name. Not being a hacker,

I don’t know what their capabilities are.” That concern was echoed in Washington. “The seriousness of this breach at Yahoo is huge,” Democratic Senator Mark Warner said Thursday. The company plans to brief Warner next week about the attack, his office said. Yahoo has said that it believes that the breach was perpetrated by a state-sponsored actor. SY Lee, a former Department of Homeland Security spokesman, said that would be of particular concern to the intelligence community, given the interest state-sponsored hackers have in compromising employees with security clearances. The FBI had not issued specific guidance to its employees on handling their personal Yahoo accounts, a spokeswoman said. British companies BT Group (BT.L) and Sky Plc (SKYB.L), which use Yahoo to host email for some of their broadband customers, said they were communicating with their users. Yahoo urged users to change their passwords and security questions, but some said it would be easier just to give up their accounts because they rarely use them. The company has been losing users, traffic and ad revenue in recent years and over the summer agreed to sell its core business for $4.8 billion to Verizon (VZ.N). Rachel, a 33-year-old from Newcastle, England, who asked Reuters not to use her last name, said she would be shutting down the Yahoo account she opened in 1999.

Google would likely be most interested in the social and news dimensions of Twitter. Disney, by contrast, might see it as a way to expand the reach of its sports and entertainment programming. It is not clear how quickly Twitter might approach a sale, but it is moving to formalize the process, sources have said. A deal is by no means assured in light of the company’s uncertain financial prospects and steep price tag - its market value is more than $16 billion after talk of a sale drove the stock up over the past few days. Twitter Chief Executive Jack Dorsey, speaking at a conference in Washington on Monday, declined to

Facebook Inc (FB.O), meanwhile, has been trying to replicate Twitter on its own platform and could also face antitrust challenges if it tried to buy the company, Greenfield said. So far Facebook has not been mentioned as a potential buyer, but with its large cash reserves and penchant for surprise moves it cannot be counted out. THE MEDIA PLAY Twitter’s foray into live streaming of National Football League games and its presence in news gathering could interest media companies such as Disney, which owns sports channel ESPN. Twitter’s presence on mobile devices could help any media company, all of which are struggling to find mobile growth, according to BTIG’s Greenfield. No media company has a mobile product with as much reach as Twitter, he noted. “The world of media is shifting to mobile and these newer platforms are becoming the future,” Greenfield said. Still, media companies do not have the best track record with social media. News Corp’s (NWSA.O) acquisition of MySpace in 2005 ended in disaster. And some question whether the media companies and top personalities that have been so important to Twitter would stick around if a rival media firm were the owner.

Tyson Foods recalls chicken nuggets sold at Costco stores

Undated handout illustration of Tyson Foods’ panko chicken nuggets Tyson Foods Inc (TSN.N) said on Tuesday it is recalling about 132,520 pounds of chicken nuggets due to a possible contamination from plastic. Tyson said it got complaints from consumers saying they had found small pieces of hard, white plastic in the nuggets, prompting the recall. (bit.ly/2d7sZQF) The plastic may have originated from a rod used to connect a plastic transfer belt, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said, and

classified it as a Class I recall. (bit.ly/2czkxFO) There have been no injuries associated with this recall, Tyson said. A Class I recall is a health hazard situation which can cause serious, adverse health consequences or death. The affected 5-pound bags of Panko chicken nuggets were sold at Costco Wholesale Corp (COST.O) stores. Some affected 20-pound cases of the Spare Time brand were sold to a single wholesaler in Pennsylvania.

Top-order issues have led to downfall – Brathwaite

Carlos Brathwaite West Indies T20 captain Carlos batting and the misuse of the first six Brathwaite has pointed out that top- overs was our downfall in the first two order issues have been the major worry games.” Their top three batsmen for them in the two matches against Pakistan in Dubai. West Indies were Johnson Charles, Evin Lewis and reduced to 17 for 4 in the first T20, Andre Fletcher - fell for low scores, before being bowled out for 115, and leaving much of the work for the were tottering at 19 for 3 while chasing middle and lower order. Among all “The one glaring thing I can batsmen who have batted in the two see [that went wrong in the first two T20s, only one - Dwayne Bravo - has matches] is the batting, especially top- scored over 30. Brathwaite said it was order batting,” Brathwaite said on the collective effort he was concerned Monday. “We haven’t been making the about, and not the performance of any most of the first six overs with only two single player, when asked about Andre fielders out. And then it became harder Fletcher’s form. “It’s about each and every and harder…in the first game we had five wickets down. And then chasing person, not only one single one,” 160 and [being] only 20-odd after the Brathwaite said. “As a batting unit first six, it’s going to be a lot more we did not come to the party, we didn’t difficult especially with such huge perform as we wanted to do in the two games. Fletcher. He has done very very well for the West Indies in the recent past and if you remember he had scored a match-winning 80-odd against Sri Lanka in the [T20] World Cup. So one or two bad games do not make him a bad player. Fletcher knows what he has to do to be better than he has been in the first two days, so has the top order. It’s about them going back to the rooms, recalibrating, finding ways and means to execute different plans.” West Indies’ biggest positive has been their legspinner Samuel Badree, their only bowler to concede at less than seven runs per over in the series so far. Even though West Indies were defending only 115 in the first T20, he opened the bowling and finished with 4-0-27-1, taking the only wicket that fell. In the second T20, Badree was their most economical bowler with figures of 4-0-24-1. He bowled Pakistan opener Sharjeel Khan on both occasions. “Simplicity [is his strong point], he keeps it simple, he knows his strengths,” Brathwaite said about Badree. “I think himself and Imad Wasim are quite similar, as in they are not big turners of the ball and they probably won’t keep you awake at night but when they get into the game and the way they bowl wicket to wicket - you miss I hit - that’s been successful for Badree, the No. 1 bowler in the world and you can see why.” Brathwaite also reflected on his learnings as captain from the second series he has been leading his team in. He took over from Darren Sammy and won his first series as T20 captain when they beat India 1-0 in the two-match series in Florida last month. Brathwaite said he was feeling more confident with his role as captain

with more matches under his belt, even though they were trailing 2-0 in the current series. “I have learnt a lot. So I am not really judging myself and thinking because I want to win the series and make the West Indies fans happy,” he said. “If we can help the fans to continue to enjoy T20 cricket then I’d think I have done a good job. Up until now, we haven’t so it’s up to me to motivate the guys for the next game to help put a smile on the fans’ faces. “I don’t know if it’s more comfortable or more familiar but I’m still new into the job, but that’s not an excuse [for losing]. As we go on, I feel a lot more confidence with things. I don’t know for how long I’ll be in the job for but just want us to do a good job and even get better at it.” The visitors had faced extremely hot conditions in Dubai last week and are likely to face more of that in Abu Dhabi with the highest temperature expected to go close to 40 degrees. Brathwaite said they had not adjusted that poorly but stated it was more likely to be a bigger factor during the ODIs and Tests in the coming weeks. “It is what it is. The heat won’t change, probably it will be hotter as we go into the 50-over as we start early and then Test cricket which will see longer days. So I won’t say it’s easy but you know we have to adjust, we haven’t adjusted that poorly. However, we have completed the 20 overs within the time frame and coming off the field don’t think too many guys were panting. So we seemed fit enough to get through 20 overs with good intensity. The heat is a factor but I don’t think it had any bearing on them getting on to 160 and us not restricting them to 140 or 150.”

Buddy Hield: ‘I haven’t established myself yet in this league’ NBA training camps get underway this week and fans had their first opportunity to see rookie guard Buddy Hield and this season’s New Orleans Pelicans. The Pelicans hosted media day last weekend and the development of Hield in his rookie campaign was one of the major talking points for members of the organisation. Hield talked about his interaction with the veterans and what he expects to learn in training camp. “You have to pick their brains,” he said. “If you don’t ask questions, you’re not going to learn much. And if you don’t ask them questions, you think you know it all. You don’t know it all. I ask guys, ‘What did you do in this situation?’ I’m talking to coaches, learning and watching film. SPORTS Baseball world mourns boating death of Miami Marlins star Fernandez

A boat lies overturned on a jetty, off Miami Beach, Fla. José Fernández Miami Marlins star Jose Fernandez, one of the most dominant pitchers in Major League Baseball and a hero to Miami’s Cuban community, was killed in a boating crash early on Sunday in Florida, the U.S. Coast Guard said. He was 24 years old. Fernandez, who as a teenager survived harrowing conditions at sea as he fled Cuba to start a new life in the United States, was one of three men killed when a 32-foot boat collided with a rocky jetty off Miami Beach, the Coast Guard said. The team, which drafted the pitcher in the first round of the 2011 draft, canceled its Sunday home game against the Atlanta Braves but dozens of mourners still gathered at a makeshift memorial set up for Fernandez near the entrance to Marlins Park. Many wore his No. 16 jersey and brought flowers, teddy bears and pictures of themselves with the All

Star pitcher. “”He was one of our game’s young stars who made a dramatic impact on and off the field,” Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. Emergency crews responded to reports of a boat overturned on a jetty near the Government Cut shipping channel and South Pointe Park at about 3:30 a.m. (0730 GMT), the Coast Guard said. Fernandez, who was born and raised in Cuba, tried three times to defect to the United States before arriving in the country at age 15 with his mother. Cuba’s state-controlled media made no mention of Fernandez’s death on Sunday, a standard practice for those who left the island-nation surreptitiously, even though its communist government restored diplomatic relations with the United

Miami Marlins star Jose Fernandez. States last year. Tony Diaz, a spokesman for the Cuban Baseball Federation, said the pitcher’s death was “a big loss for global baseball. An already famous youth, he had a promising future.” The right-hander, who made his major league debut in April 2013, was a two-time All-Star selection and won the National League Rookie of the Year Award. Fernandez compiled a 16-8 record this season for the Marlins and was second in strikeouts in the National League. Known for his overpowering fastball, he had already had a franchise season record for strikeouts with 253 this season, and his 12.49 strikeouts per nine innings was the best in both the National and American leagues, according to the MLB.com. At least two fellow Cuban-born baseball players, Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Yoenis Cespedes

of the New York Mets, paid tribute to Fernandez by hanging his team jersey in their dugouts before Sunday games. Fernandez, with his good looks and on-field charisma, was in many ways a hero to Miami’s sprawling Cuban community. “His story was our story,” said Miguel Garay, 78, who came to Miami from Cuba’s Pinar del Rio. “There’s such a great tradition of baseball in Cuba and he embodied it better than anyone.” Havana-born Rene Nodarse, 55, said Fernandez stood out from other Cuban baseball players in Major League Baseball because of his cleancut image. “He had so much passion and joy,” he said. “Today it feels like our whole community has died.” The bodies of Fernandez and the other two men, who were between the ages of 24 and 27, were found on and underneath the boat, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman Lorenzo Veloz said at a news conference. The agency is investigating the cause of the incident. The identities of the two other victims were not released. The speed at which the boat was traveling was believed to have played a role in the crash but alcohol and drugs were not considered to be a factor, Veloz said.

his playing career. “Although it was made clear during the recorded conversations that any proposed arrangements would need the FA’s full approval, I recognize I made some comments which have caused embarrassment.” England is not rushing to replace Allardyce. Gareth Southgate, the manager of England’s under-21 side, will take charge of the senior team’s next four matches — against Malta, Slovenia, Scotland and Spain — across October and November. That means there is less urgency for the FA to hire a new manager with the following game not until March 2017 when England hosts Lithuania in its fifth World Cup qualifier. The Telegraph published its investigation in its Tuesday edition, under the front-page headline: “England manager for sale.” Allardyce met people he reportedly thought were representatives of an Asian firm. In a grainy video, he is recorded as saying it was “not a problem” to circumvent FA rules that stop third parties from owning the economic rights of players. FIFA has banned third-party ownership as a threat to the game’s integrity because investors force transfers to make a profit. “You can still get around it,” the former Sunderland and West Ham manager said in the recording. “I mean obviously the big money’s here.” Allardyce told the undercover reporters that Hodgson sent players “all to sleep.” Allardyce also mimicked Hodgson’s speech impediment. Only last week Allardyce was eagerly taking pictures on his phone of the European Championship trophy at the London launch of the branding for the Euro 2020 semifinals and final which are being staged at Wembley Stadium. In the recordings, Allardyce questioned why Prince William was absent from the launch. “He’s our ambassador for the Football Association, so it would have been nice if he’d have turned up but he obviously had more, much busier things on,” Allardyce said. The cost of Wembley Stadium, which hosts England home games, was also a target for Allardyce in the recordings. “They stupidly spent 870 million pounds on Wembley, so they’re still paying that debt off,” Allardyce said of the FA. “They’re all about making money aren’t they? You know the FA’s the richest football association in the world? Well, I shouldn’t say that.” Allardyce issued a “sincere and wholehearted apology” to the FA, but it wasn’t enough to save one of the most high-profile jobs in world sport.

Ronaldo and Zidane at peace, but Madrid still not winning

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates scoring the opening goal with Real Madrid’s head coach Zinedine Zidane during the Champions League group F soccer match between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid in Dortmund, Germany, Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016 MADRID — Real Madrid solved one of its problems during its trip to Germany in the Champions League: Cristiano Ronaldo made peace with coach Zinedine Zidane. Now it needs to find a way to start winning again. The 2-2 draw at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday was the third consecutive for Madrid in all competitions, raising questions about the team’s potential to repeat as Champions League champion, and to end a four-year title drought in the Spanish league. “I am frustrated,” Zidane said. “We played a good game in attack and defense and it was a great effort from everyone. We played the game we wanted. At the end, the same (draw) again, it’s the third match. I’m frustrated for the players because it’s undeserved.” Dortmund’s equalizer came in the 87th minute, when Madrid appeared in control. One of the positives that came out of the result was that Zidane got a much warmer handshake from Ronaldo, who created a bit of turmoil after going on a little rant because of his substitution in the league setback at Las Palmas on Saturday. He didn’t even look at Zidane while reaching for the coach’s extended hand on the sidelines. After scoring Madrid’s first goal in Dortmund, he immediately pointed to the bench and rushed to celebrate with his teammates. He also exchanged a moment with Zidane, apparently trying to erase doubts about any problems in their relationship. Ronaldo and his teammates have been struggling to put together the type of top-notch performances that led them to the European final last season, failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities and being unable to put games away. “We need one more goal. When you are only one goal in front, things like this can happen,” Zidane said. “We are in a slump but we will keep working, and we will change things soon.” Madrid’s first draw was at home against Villarreal, and then it tied Las Palmas after conceding a late goal. In its Champions League opener against Sporting Lisbon, it was losing until the 89th when it rallied to win.

Djokovic pulls out of China Open with elbow injury World number one Novak Djokovic has been forced to withdraw from next week’s China Open in Beijing because of an elbow injury. Serb Djokovic, a six-times winner of the tournament who has a 29-0 win-loss record in Beijing, last played in his U.S. Open final loss to Stan Wawrinka this month. “I am extremely disappointed not to be able to compete at the China Open this year. I’m still recovering from my elbow injury and have been advised not to play until my condition improves,” Djokovic said on his website (www.novakdjokovic. com) on Wednesday. “I will continue with my rehabilitation and hope to be able to return to the ATP Tour as soon as possible. The China Open is one of my favorite tournaments.” Women’s world number two Serena Williams also withdrew from the China Open due to a persistent shoulder injury.

LIVE YOUR GOALS FESTIVAL 2016

Saturday, September 24th, 2016 saw early registration of approximately 100 participants for the second FIFA Live Your Goals Festival which was hosted by the Turks & Caicos Islands Football Association (“TCIFA”). Live Your Goals (“LYG”) is an initiative undertaken by FIFA to promote and encourage girls and women to participate in football and stay in the game. FIFA seeks to increase the current number of female participants from 30 million to 45 million worldwide by Women’s World Cup 2019. In 2015 TCIFA embarked on the FIFA LYG four year campaign and is committed to: •Increase the popularity of women’s football locally, nationally and globally; •Spark, foster and generate excitement about women’s football; •Increase participation of girls and women in football; •Create the best platforms for women’s football

to thrive with more females becoming lifelong participants in the sport; and •Ensure that football is the number one sport for females across the globe in terms of participation and popularity.

Secretary, Candia Ewing, Technical Director, Darren Meehan, EXCO Director, Candace Hanchell, LYG Ambassador, Olivia Gravely and other TCIFA EXCO Members and Women’s Football Board Members were in attendance and assisted with the event.
