CARNIVAL CRUISE CENTRE HAS SERIOUS CONCERNS Premier addresses problems at Grand Turk Cruise Line
T
By Todeline Defralien
he Carnival Cruise Centre, which is the main tourist attraction and the economic engine of Grand Turk, is faced with some very serious concerns that have caused declining passenger and ship numbers and engaged the attention of Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson. Addressing the first official press conference of the People’s Democratic Movement’s (PDM) Cabinet, on Wednesday, January 18th, 2017, the Premier said that one of the pressing issues raised in Grand Turk when they held the first town hall-style meeting was “what appears to be contentious between Carnival and those vendors”. She said: “We’ve had a very successful meeting and we’ve had a strong attendance. We believe that we’ve reached a wonderful place actually where both Government and vendors realize the industry and appreciate the importance of the cruise ship industry to the island of Grand Turk. I am pleased to report that I will also be sitting with Carnival representatives on Monday to address a way forward. It is critical that we resolve some of the issues that we understand to have been brewing between vendors and guests and even vendors and Carnival operators.” The Premier told reporters it appears that there have been several concerns particularly as it relates to the harassment of guests, adding that she was concerned about the fact that there was the “decline in numbers and there was no attention being paid to it”. She added: “We hope that they will understand that we are a Government that is prepared to engage and that we are committed to the industry and to address the challenges head on instead of hoping that they disappear.” Continued on Page 2
New Fire Truck Commissioned at South Caicos Airport The Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority on Thursday commissioned a new rescue and fire fighting vehicle. The commissioning ceremony took place at the South Caicos Airport in the presence of government officials, and the authority’s directors, management and staff. The vehicle was procured to boost the airport’s operating capacity in advance of the multimillion dollars upgrade to the airport runway and terminal building. The entire project forms part of the Turks and Caicos Islands government’s commitment to improve the aviation infrastructure in the nation. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Airports Authority CEO Mr. John Smith said “the presence of the fire truck in
South Caicos signals the Authority’s commitment to the people of South Caicos and that this achievement is not the work of one individual, but by a group of people that we would like to acknowledge collectively.” Mr. Smith thanked that staff, management team and board members of the Airports Authority for their tireless work to keep the organization growing. The chairman of the board, Mr. Gordon Burton, in his remarks admonished the firefighters to take good care of their new equipment as South Caicos is at the cusp of taking off. The Honorable Premier Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson spoke at the event and reiterated her government’s intention to supply all that is needed to facilitate
the local community as well as the business community which she hopes will soon grow. She remarked “I am happy for the people of South Caicos because when they leaned on us, we leaned on them. There has been frustrating months and years and we are happy that that may have come to an end.” The fire truck arrived in South Caicos two weeks ago, but was ceremoniously handed over today by Maureen Allen, a representative of the manufacturer. Training for the vehicle operators and maintenance team will continue for the next week before the vehicle is entered into operations. Premier Hon. Carnival Cruise Centre Has Serious Concerns Continued from Page 1 Premier Cartwright-Robinson said she told vendors that this relationship is going to call for compromise and that it is in everyone’s best interest that the TCI maintains the product, the quality and pull the cruise ship ratings back up and increase the numbers again. “You can appreciate with every cruise industry that there will be persons who are unregulated or unlicensed. We hope to address those persons on a separate meeting, although some of them were at the meeting but we’re going to have to make stern decisions and enforce because at the end of the day if we’re going to see a decline in numbers and we’re going to see an increase in complaints and a drop in our rating... I think we were at number one and now we’re probably fifth or sixth. We can’t do that. We are relatively new port and we’ve had great success that even Carnival didn’t anticipate and we want to maintain that,” Robinson explained. According to the latest available figures from the Tourist Board, there has been a decline in the number of cruise passengers and cruise ships going to the Carnival Cruise Center in Grand Turk. The Tourist Board report stated: “There is no secret that there have been grave challenges to the cruise industry in Grand Turk. the victim who received first degree burns to his head, arm and torso told officers that his girlfriend, the accused threw it on him. As a result, an investigation was launched. He was taken to hospital where he was deemed in critical condition. As a result of inquiries, police later arrested and charged the 25-year-old with the offence mentioned. Blue Hills access road to start in six months By Todeline Defralien The new Government of TCI has confirmed that in six months time work will start on the alternative roads out of Blue Hills to ease traffic congestion. Speaking at the first press conference held by the new People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) Government of the TCI on Wednesday January 18th, Hon. Goldray Ewing said that the roads will be properly done with sidewalks included. He said, “You should see work started on that road I will say in six months because of the land acquisition that is going to be put in place to gain access to that land. The roads are going to be properly done and will have sidewalks so people won’t have
any fear of driving that road for a short-cut or for emergency purposes.” Ewing added, “We have identified a proper route leading from the Blue Hills t junction coming out of Blue Hills front road and it’s straight across from there directly through the Dock Yard area and will end up at the roundabout in Kew Town which is the emergency bypass road. We will not be taking the road through the New Testament Church because it’s too much twists and bends and it is private. The Government will get into some agreement with land acquisition for the private owners of those lands to make sure that we can have that road put in.” Ewing said that they are looking at two more alternative routes out of Blue Hills but they
will be done about two to three years from now to make sure that Blue Hills has proper access out of that settlement. When asked by media why this project took such a long time Ewing added: “I had no direct powers to go and do a land acquisition. Even though we identified some property when I was in Opposition the (then) Government chose not to take that route.” Ewing was unable to say the cost for the entire project but said he has already instructed planning to give him some amendment to bring to the House to make sure that they have the “powers to prosecute and to take what every illegal development that is taken place in the country to deal with it right away without going through Hon. Goldray Ewing the court process”.

Jamaican teacher trying to use work permit nonrenewal to strain Jamaica/Turks and Caicos Islands The Jamaican pre-school teacher who was arrested and detained by the Immigration Task Force for over-staying in the Turks and Caicos Islands after her work permit expired and was not renewed, has been accused of embarking on a “sick and feeble attempt to sour relations” between Jamaica and Turks and Caicos Islands by “seeking sympathy and spreading vicious lies” about this country and her former employers. That’s the view of management of the pre-school who were responding to an article in the Jamaica Observer which attributed a number of false statements to lawyers from Naylor & Mullings, who are representing Suzette Codling, of Mandeville, Jamaica, and who is a former teacher of Emmanuel Kinder Prep School. In a statement to the Turks and Caicos SUN, the daycare said: “It’s most unfortunate that someone who we welcomed with open arms into our country, our homes, our churches and our hearts, and with whom we took a leap of faith to deal with our young children, has now flouted the laws of our country, betrayed the trust that was reposed in her and violated our principles in such a way that was absolutely not in best interest of our pre-school, our children and our country. The safety, well-being and development of the children in our care are our top priorities and we will not comprise these for anyone or anything.” The statement continued: “It is quite sad that Suzette has embarked on what is clearly an evil and wicked crusade of seeking sympathy and spreading vicious lies, aimed at what can best be described as a sick and feeble attempt to strain relations between Jamaica and Turks and Caicos Islands. Contrary to what is being promoted by her, through her lawyers, this matter has nothing whatsoever to do with Jamaicans in general. It is unfair, dangerous and wrong to seek to elevate this norenewal of a work permit issue into a crisis of Jamaicans in Turks and Caicos Islands. It is not. In fact, we have since replaced Ms. Codling with a more qualified Jamaican teacher. It bears emphasizing that a work permit is a privilege that is granted for a specific time and occupation. It is not a lifetime achievement and all employers reserve the right to not renew any work permit if they see it fit to do so.” Officials from the daycare said they are standing by their statements about alleged verbal and physical abuse of young students by Ms. Codling, who has a diploma in primary education from the Catholic College of Mandeville. They have categorically denied a statement in the Observer that she was underpaid and that she was still owed money by the company. “Ms. Codling was being paid US$1,940 per month. Prior to her securing an apartment, she was allowed to stay in a hotel for about three months, all expenses paid.
Indeed, when her work permit was not renewed, she was summoned to an audio-recorded meeting with an official from the Labour Department who calculated what was owed to her (over US$2,000) and the company paid her. It is therefore a blatant lie to say that she was owed for the months of November and December 2016, or for any months at all. She signed off on the payment and was given her one-way ticket to Jamaica, as required by law. She chose the exact date she wanted to return to Jamaica, which was December 25th, 2016. Her work permit was then given to the Immigration Department and they formally cancelled it.” The company said that Ms. Codling’s rights in the Turks and Caicos Islands were never violated by anyone in the organisation, and she was always well-treated and never made any formal or any informal reports of such until that claim was made through her lawyers in the Observer article. “We are confident that if there were any issues about her rights being violated in the Turks and Caicos Islands, Ms. Codling certainly would have contacted the Jamaican Consulate here in the Turks and Caicos. So this is yet another figment or her very fertile imagination. We also hesitate to mention that another Jamaican female national who was Ms. Codling’s roommate, reported that Ms. Codling threw her work permit in the garbage on the very day that she (the roommate) was returning to Jamaica for the Christmas holidays,” the statement added. Officials from the daycare told The SUN it is also untrue to say that Codling was granted until April 30th to stay in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Correspondence obtained by The SUN, showed that on December 21st, two days after Codling was notified that her work permit was not renewed and she signed off on her payments, there was a note to Immigration saying that she was requesting to remain in the Turks and Caicos Islands until April 30th, 2017. The SUN was informed that the Labour Tribunal has no jurisdiction to grant extensions of stay in the Turks and Caicos Islands. That, according to Government sources, can only be done by the Immigration Department who did not grant her the extension and hence, launched a search for her, arrested her and detained her for overstaying, in accordance with standard operating procedure and the law. While Codling was in the Detention Centre, she contacted Bishop Coleta Williams, the cleric who gained notoriety by denying allegations that he was the person featured in a sex video which went viral locally and internationally last year. Bishop Williams signed what amounts to bail for Ms. Codling and she was given until Saturday, January 21st, to leave the Turks and Caicos Islands. The SUN can also confirm, contrary to statements by Codling’s

Mr. Hutchinson has since been supplied with all of the factual evidence from the daycare regarding Codling’s situation.

SIPT prosecutor cutting back about 68 witnesses
Queen’s Counsel Andrew Mitchell, the lead prosecutor in the Special Investigation and Prosecution Team (SIPT) corruption trial, is seeking to cut about 68 persons from his witness list. When the trial resumed on Monday, January 16, 2017 from a one-month Christmas break, Mitchell said the prosecution did a review of the witnesses list and concluded that “some were deemed relevant and there was a category of witnesses who we consider no longer relevant to the issues of the case and therefore there’s no need to call them”. He also noted that it was proving “increasingly difficult” to get some witnesses to testify or to come back to court to testify. The British prosecutor told Mr. Justice Paul Harrison that he had asked defence lawyers to let the prosecution know by January 16th what was their position with respect to the witnesses, but only some of them responded. Judge Harrison then ordered that by January 23rd, 2017, defence counsel must notify the prosecution whether they have any objection to the testimony of the 68 witnesses being read of if they have any objection to any of the witnesses being called. So far, 45 witnesses have been called and statements read from eight. When the corruption trial of former Turks and Caicos Islands Premier, Michael Misick and others, officially started on Monday, January 18th, 2016, Mitchell said more than 100 persons, including several former and current senior civil servants, local developers, lawyers, business persons and residents, will be called as
prosecution witnesses. Meantime, Special Prosecutor Helen Garlick has been in regular attendance at the court hearings in recent times. Last year, the SUN wrote an article questioning Garlick’s prolonged absence from the trial. A response published on the SIPT website stated that the role of Special Prosecutor does not require Helen Garlick to be in court every day. “In this respect the role is equivalent to that of a Case Controller or Assistant Director at the Serious Fraud Office, or of a senior lawyer at the Crown Prosecution Office in the United Kingdom. In an equivalent case in the United Kingdom the instructing prosecutor would not attend each and every day of the trial,” the press release said. “ The prosecution case in the trial of Mc Allister Hanchell, Michael Misick and others is being presented by a team of barristers, lead by Andrew Mitchell QC, instructed by Ms Garlick. All the evidence and Case papers are held electronically. On every day that court sits Mrs Garlick receives a live note of the evidence from junior counsel and is able to follow the proceedings as they take place. She is also available to the Case Team every day and speaks to a senior officer and or counsel at least once a day.” The press release said Mrs Garlick has not been paid a retainer, contrary to the report in the Sun article., neither has Andrew Mitchell QC. “She is paid a daily rate for her work as SP. Accordingly when she is not in the TCI, this results in a saving of public funds. Claims by the SUN that Mrs Garlick travels extensively

Any other foreign travel undertaken by Ms Garlick has either been for personal reasons and at her own expense, or for the occasional pro bono (free) services that she has provided for international anti corruption bodies,” the press release added. The SUN report also stated that Mrs Garlick is simultaneously working for Fulcrum Chambers. The SIPT statement said that since the time of her appointment as Special Prosecutor in 2009, apart from one small assignment in 2013, Ms Garlick has undertaken no other paid

teacher joined this “working group”. It was stated that this group was formed to assist Mr. Adams in various administrative duties. This group is also tasked with the responsibility of checking their fellow colleague’s lesson plans. If you understand the structure of the education system you will quickly realize that this is an unacceptable practice as none of these persons have been appointed Heads of Departments through due process. Contrary to what Mr. Adams wants to portray the role and responsibility of this “working group” is unclear to staff and seems to be a way to alleviate Mr. Adams of his duties as the acting principal of this institution,” the complaint to The SUN stated. It was also noted that during Mr. Adams tenure as vice principal, a junior female member of staff was moved from the general staff room and began working from his office and as a member of his “working group”. This, according to the staff, immediately raised some concerns, as the role and level of involvement of this individual was never explained but from a professional perspective, there was a clear crossing of line between management and line staff. It was noted that some teachers have over 28 sessions to teach, inclusive of subjects outside of their specialty area due to a shortage of staff and are still assigned the duties of form teachers. However, it was noted that a particular individual only carries a load of some possible 10 sessions and is not assigned a form. “This is a grave disparity that needs to be addressed; it is an issue that no one dares to question him
about. The relationship that exists goes beyond what is normal in the work environment. It continues to create a lot of concern that cannot be expressed openly,” the staff added. DISCO DURING EXAMS It was also revealed that the Long Bay High School continues to have a series of fund raising activities each calendar year, but unfortunately, the frequency of these events impedes the teacher’s ability to teach adequate material to prepare students for examination. “The main fund raiser is a school disco. During the week of term two exams, teachers who had exams during that period were instructed to send the children to the disco. This meant that many of our students had to do examination the following week, which was the week for the end of year exam for the Christmas break. This did not sit well with teachers, but they had no choice. It is inconceivable that a principal would have such an event during exams; as the kids are no longer focused and it will ultimately affect their performance,” the complaint added. “Secondly, the lewd dancing which included females dancing on females was pointed out, yet nothing was done. This is something that parents are probably not aware of and not promoted within their home. Under its present leadership, the future of education at this institution is on a downward spiral. We are calling on the Minister of Education to conduct a thorough investigation into the leadership of the newly constructed Long Bay High School.”

We Resolve To Lose Weight By Dr. Marsha Barnett
Happy New Year! Its resolution time! And the number one resolution worldwide is to lose weight. With over half of the worlds’ adult population being overweight or obese, all the medical conditions we now know are linked to obesity, and the relentless desire to fit into society’s demands for physical attractiveness, the weight loss industry is a multibillion dollar industry. Every year, especially at this time, I am asked to help with weight loss or to give my opinion on the newest weight loss diet program on the market. Here are a few pointers on how you I believe you should approach diet and weight loss over the year: •Be patient. Steady wins the race Of course, it’s tempting to go on that 3-day liquid fast or a daily 500 calorie program where you are promised you will lose 5- 10 lbs in a week. But when following a very low calorie diet, your body preys on your muscle and slows your metabolism rate, making regaining the weight

Minister of Tourism, Hon. Ralph Higgs said; “I am grateful for the assistance of CWaves and
their input which will help with the removal of Mega One Triton, which has become unsightly on one of our most popular beaches over the years. My Government stands firm on seeing the removal of this impediment in a timely manner.” Following the assessments last week, the consultants have proposed a range of options to be
considered for the safe and efficient removal of the wreck from Governor’s Beach in an environmentally friendly manner. This consultancy was awarded to CWaves following a tender process, and is funded by the UK Government. CWaves will be responsible for developing the Invitation to Tender for contractors

This 5k, 10k and half marathon fundraising event is in its sixth year and is the first athletic event in each New Year. It is held every second weekend in January and is seen as a way to help participants kick start their New Year’s Resolutions of living a healthier lifestyle. Six gangsters killed in Jamaica
Members of the Jamaica Defence Force and the Jamaica Constabulary Force at the scene of Saturday night’s deadly shooting in Goodwill GOODWILL, St James — Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Clifford Blake described the joint police/military operation in the Goodwill community of St James on Saturday night, in which six alleged members of the Ski Mask Gang were killed, as “a brave and courageous effort” by the lawmen. Police said four guns and a quantity of ammunition were seized following the deadly shootout. “We are yet to get all the details of the operation, but from all indications it was a brave and courageous effort by members of the security forces in the face of danger,” said DCP Blake during a tour of a section of the community, which was the scene of an alleged firefight between the lawmen and members of the gang. “It is really a commendable effort. They [police] came under severe threat and they responded to defend themselves. To face a gang of well-armed criminals in the night, firing at you, and taking the reputation of these guys into consideration… they are dangerous criminals; they are people who don’t hesitate to murder people… so it’s really bravery and courage of the highest order.” The operation, which involved members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and the Mobile Reserve of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, was acting in response to information reportedly received about the gang that is said to have been involved in recent shootings in the Barrett Town area of St James. The police reported that about 9:00 pm on Saturday, lawmen, strategically positioned on a section of the Goodwill main road, signalled the driver of a Toyota Corolla motor car in which the alleged gang members were travelling, to stop. The vehicle reportedly came to a halt, then shortly afterwards the occupants exited the vehicle and fired at the lawmen. The fire was returned, and when the shooting subsided

Premier invites outgoing United States President Obama to relax in Bermuda HAMILTON, Bermuda – Premier Michael Dunkley has invited outgoing United States President Barack Obama to “relax and have fun” in Bermuda. Dunkley, who expressed his “deepest appreciation and admiration” for Obama’s eight years of service in a letter, advised him the island would be a particularly good place to visit as it hosts the America’s Cup sailing spectacular in May and June. “Bermudians, like so many people around the world, drew comfort and hope from your steady, unflappable leadership, your integrity and decency in all matters, your inspiring words, your achievements at home and abroad, and your embodiment of the best possibilities,” Dunkley wrote. “Bermuda and the United States have a shared history dating back to the first days of the New World and the relationship has evolved into a friendship that extends into every level of our lives here. For many Bermudians, your presidency deepened that connection.” Dunkley said he had watched the farewell address by the President — whose successor Donald Trump will be sworn in on Friday — and was struck by his statement that “for all our differences, we’re all in this together; that we rise or fall as one”. The Premier wrote “those are wise words for any leader working to progress community life and they resonated with me.” He concluded his letter by extending an invitation to Obama to pay a visit to Bermuda. “It is a beautiful island of welcoming people, a place to relax and have fun, especially this year when we host the America’s Cup. “Bermudians would love to have you and your family as their guests. We look forward to welcoming you to our island.”
Barbados Finance Minister blanks idea of IMF help to turn around economy BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The Barbados government says it has not made any approach to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for assistance in turning around the island’s economy. Finance Minister Chris Sinckler, speaking on the Bank’s Tax on Assets 2017 Bill debate on Tuesday night, said the Freundel Stuart government and more specifically the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Barbados had approached the Washington-based financial institution for assistance. “Certainly not under my instruction. I have not given anybody any instruction to engage negotiations with the International Monetary Fund either formally or informally for any… programme. Let me make that abundantly clear,” he told legislators. He said that the only time the government had engaged the IMF was to access its technical expertise. “We have been very open. The IMF has come here on several occasions because we have asked them for technical assistance on a number of matters. “The Fiscal Affairs Department on Fiscal Policy decide that we are going to engage them. We ask them to come, sometimes they come quarterly, they come for the Article IV, which they have to come for, but outside of that we invited them to come, we have drawn on their fiscal expertise…,” he insisted.

Serbia formalises diplomatic relations with CARICOM GEORGETOWN, Guyana – The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) grouping has formalised diplomatic relations with the Republic of Serbia with the eastern European country indicating that it intends to promote cooperation with a region where it has already been active in the past. Earlier this week, the country’s first Ambassador accredited to CARICOM, Djerdj Matkovi, presented his credentials to CARICOM Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, who welcomed Serbia to the “Community’s network of friends.” Prior to the presentation of the credentials, CARICOM and Serbia had interactions within the United Nations system, through Serbia’s observer status in the Non-Align Movement, and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. The Republic of Serbia also has bilateral relations with some
CARICOM member states through which it offered scholarships to CARICOM nationals under its World in Serbia Scholarship Project. Against this backdrop Ambassador LaRocque told the Serbian envoy that it was timely and right to augment relations through the mechanism of his accreditation. He noted that they had chosen a time to strengthen ties in an era of “unprecedented promise and exceptional challenges. “We have the opportunity to partner to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Climate Change Agreement that aim to ensure global survival as well as create more just and equitable growth and distribution of wealth in the world. CARICOM countries are small, but we have and will continue to make meaningful contributions to these aspirations. We believe that in
partnership with Serbia and other like-minded countries, the scope of making development tangible for our people can be increased,” SecretaryGeneral LaRocque said. He said CARICOM was anxious to share its concerns as small, vulnerable, high-indebted middleincome countries with Serbia to secure its support. He said those concerns, including the withdrawal of correspondent banking services from the Rrgion, and the graduation of countries from access to concessionary development finance, were threats to the Community’s economic, social and trading well-being. LaRocque said CARICOM was equally anxious to hear and understand Serbia’s concerns and world views. In his remarks, the Serbian Ambassador commended the endeavours of CARICOM countries to
foster cooperation in areas including the economy, security, climate change and sustainable development, human resource development, and foreign policy. He said his country also shared CARICOM’s concerns and that Serbia has undertaken several initiatives and had defined the steps to implement the Paris Agreement and had submitted its greenhouse gas reduction plan in June 2015. “I would like to underline the commitment of the Republic of Serbia to develop relations with the Caribbean Community and all its Member States … and to promote cooperation with a region where our country has already been active in the past. “Although we are far apart geographically, the values and principles that we share get us closer to each other,” the newly accredited envoy said.

Bahamas welcomes US decision to end open door policy for Cuban migrants NASSAU, Bahamas – The Bahamas government says it welcomes the decision of the outgoing Obama administration in the United States to end a five-decade-old open door policy for Cuba migrants who were allowed entry into the North American country under the so-called “wet foot / dry foot” immigration policy. Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Fred Mitchell said that the perry Christie government had always been of the view that the policy” was …driving the rise in (illegal) Cuban landings in the Bahamas”. President Obama, who is due to demit office on January 20, announced Thursday that he was scrapping rules dating back to the 1960s, which allowed those fleeing communist Cuba a fast track to US citizenship. In a statement, Obama
said the move would “bring greater consistency to our immigration policy. “Effective immediately, Cuban nationals who attempt to enter the United States illegally and do not qualify for humanitarian relief will be subject to removal, consistent with US law and enforcement priorities,” Obama said. The Cold War-era policy had a wide-ranging impact, transforming both Cuba and the United States. It enticed millions to flee the island, fuelling economic stasis and a severe “brain drain.” Mitchell said that Nassau had been informed of the US decision by its embassy here and the effect of the policy is that Cuban nationals will now be treated like any other foreign nationals landing in the United States illegally. “They will be returned following the appropriate screening
Bahamas Flag to determine whether they qualify for refugee status. The Bahamas government welcomes this decision, particularly as it is believed that
this policy was believed to be driving the rise in Cuban landings in The Bahamas.” Mitchell said that the Bahamas repatriated 187 Cuban nationals in 2014 and with the US rapprochement of Cuba at the end of 2014, “the Bahamas repatriated 196 Cubans in 2015; and numbers continually spiked from June 2016 ending the year with 1,179 repatriations. Up to 12th January 2017, 114 Cubans have been repatriated”. Mitchell said that the government here “is mindful however that the decision is taken just as the political administration in the United States is about to change. “The Government waits to see whether the policy will continue beyond the current administration before the Government can determine what the policy’s full effects are,” he said.

Trump, sworn in as U.S. president, promises to put ‘America First’
Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States on Friday, succeeding Barack Obama and telling a bitterly divided country he will pursue “America First” policies at home and abroad. As scattered protests erupted elsewhere in Washington, Trump raised his right hand and put his left on a Bible used by Abraham Lincoln and repeated a 35-word oath of office from the U.S. Constitution, with U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts presiding. Afterward, he stretched his arms wide and hugged his wife, Melania, and other members of his US President-elect Donald Trump is sworn in as family. Then he turned around to a President on January 20, 2017 at the US podium and delivered his inaugural Capitol in Washington, DC. address. “This moment is your moment, the grounds of the National Mall. Bush and Jimmy Carter were also present with their wives. Bush’s father, former President George H.W. Bush, 92, was in Houston recovering from pneumonia. Trump and his vice president, Mike Pence, began the day attending a prayer service at St. John’s Episcopal Church near the White House. Trump took office with work to do to bolster his image. During a testy transition period since his stunning election win, Trump has repeatedly engaged in Twitter attacks against his critics, so much so that one fellow Republican, Senator John McCain, told CNN that Trump seemed to want to “engage with every windmill that he can find.” An ABC News/Washington Post poll this week found only 40 percent of Americans viewed Trump favorably, the lowest rating for an incoming president since Democrat Carter in 1977, and the same percentage approved of how he has handled the transition. raises a host of questions for the United States. Trump campaigned on a pledge to take the country on a more isolationist, protectionist path and has vowed to impose a 35 percent tariff on goods on imports from U.S. companies that went abroad. His desire for warmer ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin and threats to cut funding for North Atlantic Treaty Organization nations has allies from Britain to the Baltics worried that the traditional U.S. security umbrella will be diminished. In the Middle East, Trump has said he wants to move the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, at the risk of angering Arabs and stirring international concern. He has yet to sketch out how he plans to carry out a campaign pledge to “knock the hell out of” Islamic State militants. The inaugural festivities may have a more partisan edge than usual, given Trump’s scorching campaign and continuing confrontations between him and Democrats over his take-noprisoners Twitter attacks and pledge to roll back many of Obama’s policies. More than 60 Democratic lawmakers planned to stay away from the proceedings to protest Trump, spurred on after he derided U.S. Representative John Lewis of Georgia, a hero of the civil rights movement, for calling him an illegitimate president. Thousands of anti-Trump protesters were expected among the inauguration crowd and many TRUMP’S AGENDA demonstrators will participate in a “Women’s March on Washington” on His ascension to the White Saturday. Protests are also planned in House, while welcomed by Republicans other cities in the United States and tired of Obama’s eight years in office, abroad.

After 3 years, MH370 search ends with no plane, few answers Sydney - After nearly three years, the hunt for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 ended in futility and frustration on Tuesday, as crews completed their deep-sea search of a desolate stretch of the Indian Ocean without finding a trace of the plane. The Joint Agency Coordination Center in Australia, which has helped lead the $160 million hunt for the Boeing 777 in remote waters west of Australia, said the search had officially been suspended after crews finished their fruitless sweep of the 120 000-square kilometre search zone. “Despite every effort using the best science available, cutting-edge technology, as well as modelling and advice from highly skilled professionals who are the best in their field, unfortunately, the search has not been able to locate the aircraft,” the agency said in a statement. “Accordingly, the underwater search for MH370 has been suspended.” Officials investigating the plane’s disappearance have recommended search crews head north to a new area identified in a recent analysis as a possible crash site. But the Australian government has already nixed that idea. Last year, Australia, Malaysia and China - which have each helped fund the search - agreed that the hunt would be suspended once the search zone was exhausted unless new evidence emerges that pinpoints the plane’s specific location. Since no technology currently exists that can tell investigators exactly where the plane is, that effectively means the most expensive, complex search in aviation history is over.

Trump threatens German carmakers with 35 percent U.S. import tariff U.S President-elect Donald Trump warned German car companies he would impose a border tax of 35 percent on vehicles imported to the U.S. market, a plan that drew sharp rebukes from Berlin and hit the automakers’ shares. In an interview with German newspaper Bild, published on Monday, Trump criticized German carmakers such as BMW, Daimler and Volkswagen for failing to produce more cars on U.S. soil. “If you want to build cars in the world, then I wish you all the best. You can build cars for the United States, but for every car that comes to the USA, you will pay 35 percent tax,” Trump said in remarks translated into German. “I would tell BMW that if you are building a factory in Mexico and plan to sell cars to the USA, without a 35 percent tax, then you can forget that,” Trump said. Volkswagen (VW) shares closed down 2.2 percent, while BMW and Daimler’s shares ended 1.5 percent lower. Under pressure to deliver on campaign promises to revive U.S. industrial jobs, Trump has turned his fire on carmakers that use lowcost Mexican plants to serve the U.S. market. He has also warned Japan’s Toyota (7203.T) it could be subject to a “big border tax” if it builds its Corolla cars for the U.S. market at a planned factory in Mexico. All three German carmakers have invested heavily in Mexico, but also pointed out on Monday that they manufacturer in the United States as well. BMW executive Peter

It is the fifth time in 12 years the globe has set a new annual heat record. Records have been set in 2016, 2015, 2014, 2010 and 2005. “We don’t expect record years every year, but the ongoing long-term warming trend is clear,” said Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies. Global temperature records date back to the 1880s. The UN-affiliated World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and other international weather-monitoring groups agreed 2016 was a record, with international weather agency chief Petteri Taalas saying “temperatures only tell part of the story” of extreme warming. Experts say temperatures are unlikely to set a new peak in 2017 after the El Nino faded, even as greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels keep building up in the atmosphere, led by China and the United States. Piers Forster, climate expert at the University of Leeds, said this year was likely to be cooler. “However, unless we have a major volcanic eruption, I expect the record to be broken again within a few years,” he said. Wife of Orlando nightclub gunman arrested on federal charges The FBI on Monday arrested the wife of the gunman who killed 49 people at an Orlando gay nightclub last year, a massacre that intensified fears about attacks against Americans inspired by Islamic State, officials said. Noor Salman, 30, is being charged with obstruction of justice and aiding and abetting by providing material support to a terrorist organization, Orlando Police Chief John Mina said in a statement.Salman’s arrest came seven months after her husband, Omar Mateen, went on a hourslong siege at the Florida club that ended when police killed him. She was due to appear in federal court in Oakland, California on Tuesday morning. “Certainly I can confirm that an arrest did occur in this case,” Attorney General Loretta Lynch told MSNBC. “We said from the beginning we were going to look at every aspect of this case, every aspect of this shooter’s life to determine - not just why did he take these actions, but who else knew about them, was anyone else involved?” Lynch said. Salman, who has a young son by Mateen, was arrested at her home outside San Francisco, The New York Times reported, citing an unnamed law enforcement official. Salman has moved at least three times since the attack, attempting to avoid the news media, The Times said. The daughter of parents who immigrated from the West Bank in 1985, Salman was repeatedly questioned by law enforcement interrogators after the club attack, telling them she was with Mateen when he bought ammunition and conducted surveillance of the club. But she denied any involvement in the attack or any knowledge of her husband’s plans, she told the Times in an interview published on Nov. 1.

UK’s May Signals EU Clean Break: No ‘Half-in, Half-Out’
Britain will make a clean break from the European Union and not seek to remain “half-in, half-out,” Prime Minister Theresa May said Tuesday, disappointing businesses and voters who want the country to stay in the bloc’s single market. In her most detailed speech on the U.K.’s exit strategy, May promised to forge “a new and equal partnership” with the EU. “Not partial membership of the European Union, associate membership of the European Union, or anything that leaves us half-in, half-out,” she said. “We do not seek to adopt a model already enjoyed by other countries. We do not seek to hold on to bits of membership as we leave.” May’s speech appears to rule out the sort of close ties adopted by non-EU members Switzerland or Norway. It’s likely to be another shock for the beleaguered pound, which hit a three-month low below $1.20 Monday amid hints that May would signal an economy-roiling “hard Brexit.” Sterling has lost about a fifth of its value since Britain voted in June
to leave the EU. May has said she rejects both the “hard Brexit” label and its opposite, a compromise “soft Brexit” — but wants a new relationship in the interests of both Britain and the EU. “We want to buy your goods, sell you ours, trade with you as freely as possible, and work with one another to make sure we are all safer, more secure and more prosperous through continued friendship,” she’ll say. In a bid to alleviate fears that Brexit will mean a more insular Britain, May will say she wants the country to be “stronger, fairer, more united and more outward-looking than ever before.” In an attempt to symbolize the U.K.’s outward-facing aspirations, May delivered her speech to an audience of British civil servants and international diplomats at London’s Lancaster House, a Georgian mansion that has hosted international summits over the decades. May’s speech signals that Britain will quit the EU’s single market in goods and services in order to gain control over immigration — a
Prime Minister Theresa May key issue for many voters who backed Brexit. EU leaders say Britain can’t stay in the single market without allowing free movement of people from the bloc. The prospect of losing singlemarket access alarms many in Britain’s huge financial services sector, which relies on an ability to do business
seamlessly across the 28-nation bloc. It also worries the many foreign firms that use London not only as a financial hub but as an entry point into the EU. “We now have to assume May will prioritize immigration controls, and the price to pay will be to exit the single market,” said Neil Wilson, senior market analyst at ETX Capital. “That could send the pound a lot lower still, perhaps towards $1.10 in the coming weeks.” The pound recovered to above $1.20 Monday after U.S. Presidentelect Donald Trump’s comment in an interview with The Times of London that a U.S.-U.K. trade deal could be done “very quickly” once he takes office this week. May says she will invoke Article 50 of the EU’s key treat by March 31, to formally begin a twoyear process of negotiating Britain’s departure. But she has until now refused to reveal details about the government’s goals or negotiating strategy, arguing that to do so would weaken Britain’s hand.

Brazil Struggles to Curb Prison Violence That Has Killed 125 Brazilian authorities are scrambling to stop a wave of prison violence that has killed at least 125 inmates in two weeks, many with their heads cut off or their hearts and intestines ripped out. Three massacres and many smaller fatal clashes, all in northern states, have followed a pattern that security forces have been unable to get ahead of. It starts with an hourslong riot inside a penitentiary, then military police are sent in to assist severely outnumbered guards and distraught families wait outside while inmates post on social media photos they take of chopped up body parts. The factors fueling the violence among rival gang members are so complex that authorities say some potential remedies could exacerbate the problem. And the possibility of continued killings is raising fears the violence could spill into favelas, or slums, in major cities like Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, where drug operations are run in conjunction with bosses in prisons. “Stopping the bloodshed begins with the federal and state

Who are the 8 richest people? All men, mostly Americans
LONDON — The eight individuals who own as much as half of the rest of the planet are all men, and have largely made their fortunes in technology. Most are American, with one European and one Mexican in the mix. Several have pledged to give it all to charity. The eight tycoons’ net worth, as calculated by Forbes magazine, was cited Monday by anti-poverty activists Oxfam in a report highlighting income inequality. Although most of them will not be joining the annual meeting of business and political elites in the Swiss town of Davos this week, the extraordinary individual wealth they typify will be part of the gathering’s discussions on inequality. Here’s a look at who they are.
Bill Gates: $75 billion The man whose name is a byword for billionaire. Gates co-founded Microsoft in the mid-70s, growing it into the world’s biggest software company and helping to make computers a household item. He quit as CEO in 2000 and pledged to devote his fortune to his philanthropic activities in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He has gradually reduced his ownership in Microsoft to less than 3 percent, with the bulk of his wealth in a private firm. He’s the only one on the list who’s a regular at Davos.
Amancio Ortega: $67 billion The richest person in Europe, Ortega
opened the first Zara fashion shop in 1975. Now, the chain, part of Ortega’s Inditex group, has 7,000 shops globally. Its boom in popularity is largely due to a low cost model that competes with the likes of H&M. As Zara and Inditex grew in size, Ortega, a Spaniard, held on to a majority stake of 59 percent in the company, which has a market value of over 97 billion euros ($102 billion).
Warren Buffett: $60.8 billion The Oracle of Omaha, as he’s known for the way his every investment decision is followed by thousands. Buffett began investing as a teenager in the 1940s and gradually grew his firm, Berkshire Hathaway. Buffett, 86, is notoriously frugal and favors investing in companies with proven business models over new industries, such as in technology. He’s said he will give away the bulk of his wealth to philanthropy. Since 2006, he’s been donating blocks of Berkshire stock to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Carlos Slim Helu: $50 billion The Mexican tycoon owes his fortune to a major ownership in America Movil, a telecommunications multinational worth $42 billion. He personally owns about 7 percent in the company while his broader family retains a 37 percent
stake. He was ranked as the richest He and his wife have pledged to sell 99 person three years ago, but saw his percent of their holdings in Facebook net worth hit by a downturn in Latin — over 400 million shares, worth about American economies. Forbes estimates his net worth dropped $5 billion in the four days after Trump’s election.
Jeff Bezos: $45.2 billion The founder and CEO of Amazon.com helped revolutionize the retail industry by popularizing online shopping. What was initially an online book shop now sells pretty much anything. Bezos has reached beyond Amazon, in which he holds a 17 percent stake, to try his hand in other industries. He’s bought the Washington Post and set up an aerospace company, Blue Origin, that aims to make space accessible to tourists and paying customers.
Mark Zuckerberg: $44.6 billion He founded Facebook in 2004 while a college student to connect other Harvard students. The company went on to become popular globally and listed its shares publicly in 2012, making Zuckerberg, now 32, a multibillionaire. He’s managed to make Facebook profitable where rivals like Twitter have lagged, and expanded it with targeted acquisitions.
Larry Ellison: $43.6 billion As a young programmer in the ‘70s, Ellison’s first big client was the CIA. The name of the project was “Oracle.” In 1977, Ellison and associates used that name for their company, which creates software that helps manage databases and has since become an industry standard. Ellison has recently focused more on cloud computing, in which data is stored and managed across a network of computers. His fortune comes from the 27 percent stake he still owns in Oracle, a company worth $160 billion.
Michael Bloomberg: $40 billion Created the eponymous financial information provider in 1981 after getting laid off from an investment bank. Bloomberg made it a lucrative business in particular by selling data terminals to financial services firms. The multi-screen terminals became essential tools in the industry, incorporating real-time market information with a news service. Bloomberg, who reportedly retains an 88 percent stake in the privately held company, turned to politics in 2001, becoming mayor of New York City for three terms.
The big top comes down: Ringling Bros. circus is closing ELLENTON, Fla. — After 146 years, the curtain is coming down on “The Greatest Show on Earth.” The owner of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus told The Associated Press that the show will close forever in May. The iconic American spectacle was felled by a variety of factors, company executives say. Declining attendance combined with high operating costs, along with changing public tastes and prolonged battles with animal rights groups all contributed to its demise. “There isn’t any one thing,” said Kenneth Feld, chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment. “This has been a very difficult decision for me and for the entire family.” The company broke the news to circus employees Saturday night after shows in Orlando and Miami.
Ringling Bros. has two touring circuses this season and will perform 30 shows between now and May. Major stops include Atlanta, Washington, Philadelphia, Boston and Brooklyn. The final shows will be in Providence, Rhode Island, on May 7 and in Uniondale, New York, at the Nassau County Coliseum on May 21. The circus, with its exotic animals, flashy costumes and deathdefying acrobats, has been a staple of entertainment in the United States since the mid-1800s. Phineas Taylor Barnum made a traveling spectacle of animals and human oddities popular, while the five Ringling brothers performed juggling acts and skits from their home base in Wisconsin. Eventually, they merged and the modern circus was born. The sprawling troupes traveled around America by train, wowing audiences
with the sheer scale of entertainment and exotic animals. By midcentury, the circus was routine, wholesome family entertainment. But as the 20th century went on, kids became less and less enthralled. Movies, television, video games and the internet captured young minds. The circus didn’t have savvy product merchandising tieins or Saturday morning cartoons to shore up its image. “The competitor in many ways is time,” said Feld, adding that transporting the show by rail and other circus quirks — such as providing a traveling school for performers’ children— are throwbacks to another era. “It’s a different model that we can’t see how it works in today’s world to justify and maintain an affordable ticket price. So you’ve got all these things
working against it.” The Feld family bought the Ringling circus in 1967. The show was just under 3 hours then. Today, the show is 2 hours and 7 minutes, with the longest segment — a tiger act — clocking in at 12 minutes. `“Try getting a 3- or 4-yearold today to sit for 12 minutes,” he said. Feld and his daughter Juliette Feld, who is the company’s chief operating officer, acknowledged another reality that led to the closing, and it was the one thing that initially drew millions to the show: the animals. Ringling has been targeted by activists who say forcing animals to perform is cruel and unnecessary. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, a longtime opponent of the circus, wasted no time in claiming victory.

Facebook’s Zuckerberg questioned at trial over virtual-reality technology
Facebook Inc (FB.O) chief executive Mark Zuckerberg took the witness stand in Dallas federal court on Tuesday and denied an allegation by a rival company that the virtualreality technology of Facebook’s Oculus unit was stolen. Zuckerberg, the founder of one of the world’s largest companies, faced hours of tough, public questioning about where Oculus obtained its ideas and how much he knew about the startup when Facebook bought it for $2 billion. A jury is hearing evidence in a civil lawsuit brought by videogame publisher ZeniMax Media Inc against Oculus in 2014, in the middle of the Facebook-Oculus deal. ZeniMax said that Oculus unlawfully used its intellectual property to develop the virtual-reality system that includes the Rift headset. During one heated exchange with ZeniMax lawyer Tony Sammi, Zuckerberg told a jury in the crowded courtroom that the technology was not even fully formed when Facebook bought it. “Improving on that technology doesn’t make it yours,” Sammi countered. “If you steal my bike, paint it and put a bell on it, does that make it your bike?” Zuckerberg, wearing a dark suit and striped tie rather than his typical T-shirt and jeans, answered, “no,” but then added: “The idea
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is seen on stage during a town hall at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California September 27, 2015 that Oculus technology is based on someone else’s is just wrong.” The 32-year-old Facebook founder has spoken about virtual reality as an important part of the company’s future business, especially as the technology becomes less expensive and its uses clearer. The Oculus acquisition was more expensive than the $2 billion price tag indicated, Zuckerberg said in court, describing $700 million spent to retain employees and $300 million in payouts for reaching milestones. Oculus originally wanted $4 billion, he said. Sammi questioned whether
Facebook knew what it was doing when it made the acquisition. Zuckerberg said the Oculus deal was done over a weekend in 2014, which Sammi said did not show sufficient due diligence. Zuckerberg said, though, in later testimony that Facebook researched Oculus for months. At the time, Zuckerberg testified, he was not aware of any theft claims against Oculus. “It’s pretty common when you announce a big deal that people just come out of the woodwork and claim they own some part of the deal,” Zuckerberg said. On the stand, he also gave
Netflix adds a third more subscribers than expected Streaming video pioneer Netflix Inc added over a third more subscribers than expected in the last quarter of 2016, a sign of success for its ambitious global expansion that sent its shares up 8 percent in extended trading. Netflix signed up 7.1 million new subscribers globally, far more than the 5.2 million analysts had expected, according to research firm FactSet, beating targets at home and abroad even as it raised prices. Original shows like “Marvel’s Luke Cage” and British drama “The Crown” performed strongly around the world, Netflix said, noting that competitors were adapting to compete. Amazon.com Inc recently expanded its Amazon Prime Video service globally, and Britain’s BBC announced plans to release entire series at once to allow the “binge watching” popularized by Netflix. “It’s becoming an internet TV world, which presents both challenges and opportunities for Netflix as we strive to earn screen time,” the

While the deal was in progress, another company he did not identify made a last-minute bid that was higher, Zuckerberg said, but WhatsApp declined because of its good relationship with Facebook. The Oculus lawsuit, in the sixth day of a jury trial, relates in part to programmer John Carmack. Well-known for helping to conceive games such as “Quake” and “Doom,” Carmack worked for id Software LLC before that company was acquired by ZeniMax. He is now the chief technology officer at Oculus. Zuckerberg denied that Carmack has unfairly used computer code from his previous position. “There is no shared code in what we do,” he said. Zuckerberg said he has been interested in virtual reality since he was a student, but thought it was decades away from happening before he encountered Oculus. He told jurors how he used virtual reality to capture his daughter’s first steps, so her grandparents could experience it later. “We want to get closer to this kind of perfect representation, so you can capture a moment you had,” he said. U.S. sues JPMorgan for alleged mortgage discrimination JPMorgan Chase has agreed to pay $55 million to settle a U.S. Justice Department lawsuit accusing it of discriminating against minority borrowers by allowing mortgage brokers to charge them more for home loans, a person familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The U.S. Justice Department complaint, filed in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday, accused the bank of willfully violating the U.S. Fair Housing Act and the Equal Credit Opportunity Act between 2006 and 2009 and showing “reckless disregard” for the rights of at least 53,000 African-American and Hispanic borrowers. “We’ve agreed to settle these legacy allegations that relate to pricing set by independent brokers,” JPMorgan spokeswoman Elizabeth Seymour said. “We deny any wrongdoing and remain committed to providing equal access to credit.” A spokeswoman for U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara had no immediate comment. The alleged discrimination involved so-called wholesale loans that were made through mortgage brokers the bank used to help originate loans, the complaint said. Chase allowed brokers to change rates charged for loans from those initially set based on objective credit-related factors, the complaint said. As a result of that discretion, minorities were charged more for home loans than white borrowers with the same credit profile, paying tens of millions of dollars in additional mortgage costs, the complaint said. An African-American taking out a $191,100 loan on average paid $1,126 more over the first five years of the loan than a white borrower. An Hispanic borrower with a $236,800 loan paid on average $968 more than a non-Hispanic white borrower, the complaint said.

Higher gasoline, rental costs boost U.S. consumer inflation
U.S. consumer prices increased in December as households paid more for gasoline and rental accommodation, leading to the largest year-on-year increase in 2-1/2 years and signaling that inflation pressures could be building. The rise in inflation, coming as economic growth strengthens, was corroborated by a separate report on Wednesday from the Federal Reserve, which said pricing pressures “intensified” somewhat from late November through the end of 2016. The trend, if sustained, may push the U.S. central bank to raise interest rates at a faster pace than currently anticipated. The Fed has forecast three rate hikes this year. “Further momentum in consumer prices could add to the perception of a more hawkish Fed and the potential for more aggressive tightening,” said Jim Baird, chief investment officer at Plante Moran Financial Advisors in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The Labor Department said its Consumer Price Index rose 0.3 percent last month after a 0.2 percent gain in November. In the 12 months through December, the CPI increased 2.1 percent, the biggest year-on-year rise since June 2014. The CPI rose 1.7 percent in the year to November.
The gains were in line with economists’ expectations. The CPI increased 2.1 percent in 2016, up from a gain of 0.7 percent in 2015. The Fed raised its benchmark overnight interest rate by 25 basis points to a range of 0.50 percent to 0.75 percent last month. Fed Chair Janet Yellen suggested on Wednesday that she supported further rate increases. “Waiting too long ... could risk a nasty surprise down the road either too much inflation, financial instability, or both,” Yellen said in remarks prepared for delivery to the Commonwealth Club of California in San Francisco. The dollar rebounded from a near six-week low against a basket of currencies on Yellen’s comments and the inflation data. Prices for U.S. Treasuries fell, with the yield on the 30-year bond rising to 3 percent. U.S. stocks ended mostly higher. The so-called core CPI, which strips out food and energy costs, rose 0.2 percent last month after the same increase in November. As a result, the core CPI was up 2.2 percent in the 12 months through December, from 2.1 percent in November. The Fed has a 2 percent inflation target and tracks an inflation measure which is currently

Target Corp (TGT.N) became the latest U.S. brick-and-mortar chain to report disappointing results for the holiday season, cutting its quarterly earnings forecast after sales for the crucial November-December period came in lower than expected. The news on Wednesday sent Target shares down nearly 6 percent. A sharp rise in holiday digital sales failed to offset declines at Target stores. For many retailers, rapid growth in their online sales is taking business away from their stores, which still generate more than 90 percent of their revenues. Target Chief Executive Officer Brian Cornell said deep discounts in a competitive environment hurt margins and earnings during the holiday season. While the company was pleased with its performance on Black Friday in late November and a 40 percent jump in digital sales in December, “these results were offset by earlyseason sales softness and disappointing traffic and sales trends in our stores,” Cornell said. Target said a drop in sales of electronics, entertainment, food and “essential” products in the holiday season overshadowed growth in its signature categories, including toys. Chain stores have suffered from reduced demand for small discretionary purchases and as shoppers spend more at online merchants like Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O). Earlier this month, Target rivals Macy’s Inc (M.N) and Kohl’s Corp (KSS.N) cut their profit forecasts after reporting disappointing holiday sales. Despite poor results from some retailers, overall U.S. holiday sales at stores and online came in higher than expected. The National Retail Federation reported a forecast-beating 4 percent increase to $658.3 billion, helped by an improving economy and increased discounting. “Target’s holiday performance ... is a reflection of what we viewed as a highly promotional season on multiple fronts,” said Moody’s retail analyst Charlie O’Shea. O’Shea said Target’s holiday e-commerce sales, which rose 30 percent from a year earlier, were a bright spot for the company.

Djokovic’s record title bid ends in second round
Novak Djokovic’s bid for a record seventh Australian Open title came to a stunning end on Thursday when the Serbian packed his bags and headed home in the wake of a second-round upset at the hands of world number 117 Denis Istomin. The 29-year-old has bestrode the blue hardcourts of Melbourne Park like a colossus over the last decade, winning his first grand slam title here in 2008 and adding five more in six years from Novak Djokovic 2011. gear. “In the first couple games of the fourth set, that’s where it turned around. That’s where I had to use my chances, step it up,” he said. “I didn’t. He started playing better from that point on. He just started swinging through and getting more confidence. Then it was really a gamble. “I was believing and hoping I could do it, but it wasn’t that day. That’s all I can say. Not much to add.” Thursday’s defeat came as even more of a surprise because Djokovic had started the season so well when he ended Murray’s 28-match, five-tournament winning streak in an epic final at the Qatar Open. It is Briton Murray, who took the number one ranking off the Serbian at the back end of last year, who looks to be the most likely beneficiary of Djokovic’s early departure.
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown apologized on Tuesday night for going live on Facebook from the locker room following Sunday’s 18-16 playoff victory against Kansas City Chiefs. After the Steelers’ AFC divisional-playoff win over the Chiefs, Brown streamed live on his Facebook account a video that captured Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin referring to the New England Patriots using an expletive. The video created controversy as the Steelers are set to face the Patriots in the AFC Championship this Sunday. “First, I’d like to take this opportunity to say that I’m sorry for my actions and behavior after Sunday’s game. I let my emotions and genuine excitement get the best of me, and I wanted to share that moment with our fans,” Brown tweeted. “It was wrong of me to do, against team and NFL policy, and I have apologized to Coach Tomlin and my team mates for my actions. I’m sorry to them for letting it become a distraction and something that they’ve had to answer questions about while we’re preparing for a big game on Sunday.” Earlier in the day, Tomlin criticized the actions of Brown and said that he would be punished by the team. Brown’s locker room video was a violation of NFL policy, meaning a league-imposed sanction is also possible. A five-time Pro Bowl player, Brown has 232 receiving yards and two scores this post-season to position Pittsburgh for a shot at reaching the Super Bowl.
Warriors end Cavs’ hex with blowout win The Golden State Warriors emphatically snapped a four-game losing streak to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday, using a 78-point, first-half explosion to crush the defending NBA champions 126-91. Klay Thompson scored a gamehigh 26 points and Draymond Green recorded an 11-point, 13-rebound, 11-assist triple-double, propelling the Warriors to their first win over the Cavaliers since Game 4 of last year’s NBA Finals. The triple-double was the third of the season for Green. He also blocked five shots. The Cavaliers, swept by the Warriors in two games in the regular season last year and down 3-1 in the Finals, rallied to sweep the final three games en route to their first-ever NBA championship. Cleveland extended its winning streak to four with a 109108 home win over the Warriors on Christmas Day. Golden State (35-6) took control immediately in the latest rematch, getting a layup from Stephen Curry, a 3-pointer from Thompson and
a dunk from Kevin Durant in a 7-0, game-opening burst that prompted a Cavaliers timeout just 93 seconds into the game. The Warriors led 37-22 after one quarter, then turned the game into a blowout over the final 3:31 of the second period, using an 18-3 flurry to open a 78-49 halftime advantage. Durant had seven points and Curry six in the runaway. The second quarter included a flagrant-foul charge against Green for leveling LeBron James on a fastbreak. Green was suspended for the pivotal Game 5 of the Finals last June because of the accumulation of technical and flagrant fouls, including one during a Game 4 run-in with James. James finished with a teamhigh 20 points for the Cavaliers, who were completing an 11-day, six-game trip. Cleveland (29-11) split the six games, also losing at Utah and Portland. James missed 12 of his 18 shots and three of his four 3-point attempts. Kevin Love had only three

526 potential victims in sex abuse case, 248 clubs impacted LONDON - Police say the number of clubs impacted by British soccer’s sprawling child sex abuse scandal has climbed to 248, with 184 suspects and 526 potential victims. The National Police Chiefs’ Council says 97 percent of the victims are male, with an age range from 4 to 20. The updated figures, which cover amateur and professional soccer, come two months after former professionals started to reveal historic abuse. There have been 1,016 referrals to the national police investigation from a charity’s dedicated soccer hotline and forces around the country. Police chief constable Simon Bailey, who works nationally on child protection issues, says “allegations of non-recent child sexual abuse are complex, and often require specialist skills and knowledge, and can take time to progress.”
