‘WASHIE’ SUSPENDED FROM PARLIAMENT By Todeline Defralien
L
eader of the Opposition Progressive National Party (PNP) Hon. Washington Misick was suspended from the House of Assembly on Monday, February 13th 2017, after refusing to withdraw the word “blowhard” in reference to Government back bencher Hon. Doug Parnell. Misick was suspended by Speaker Hon. Dwayne Taylor after a heated exchange that also involved Premier Hon. Sharlene CartwrightRobinson. Misick called Parnell a “pompous blowhard” because he said the PDM MP was trying to take credit for actions initiated and budgeted for by the previous Progressive National Party (PNP) administration, namely, the TOLCO agreement designed to saving Turks and Caicos Islanders Home; Phase 2 of Road Works in the Cheshire Hall Area; Funds identified to secure the perimeter fence of the prison; Funds identified to cover treatment abroad; in addition to other projects. After Misick called Parnell a blowhard, the MP for Cheshire Hall and Richmond Hill told the Speaker that under the Standing Orders of the House of Assembly, Members of Parliament may not include offensive insulting language in relations to another member. Parnell said: “Members on the other side (PNP) may not like the content of my speech, but I have never insulted any of them and I believe that such an accusation that he’s laid against me, as well as some of the comments he referred to the Hon. Premier, is unbecoming of parliamentary language of members in this House.” Speaker Hon. Dwayne Taylor intervened and stated: “Hon. Leader of the Opposition, I look to you as an experienced and someone who ought to be a statesman in this House and I would expect that you would be one of those persons who would lead by example as required. You further said to the chair (Speaker) to hurry up. You don’t do that! And not only that I would ask that you withdraw the statement, but I’ll ask that you apologize to this Honorable Chair (Speaker) and this

Honorable House for having to ask the Speaker to hurry up with his speech. You know that is unbecoming of anyone in this Hononarble House to level any insulting remarks at this Hon. Chair.” Hon. Misick then said, “Let me reiterate again, I will not be withdrawing blowhard. It is a definition for everyone to see. It is not offensive and I will not be withdrawing the statement because there is nothing wrong with it. It is not an offensive word. As it relates to my statement to say hurry up, Mr. Speaker, you embroiled yourself in politics from the first day you came in this House, so if anybody disrespects the Chair, you did!” Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson said, “Mr. Speaker, aside from blowhard, I am offended by the word he used arrogant, because arrogant can’t be anything other than what he intends for it to be, insulting.
