JOSEPHINE MAY BE FIRED by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief

H

on. Josephine Connolly may soon be fired from her Cabinet post as Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, reliable sources told The SUN. Investigations by this newspaper have revealed that relations between Connolly and Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson have been strained for quite some time, but worsened over the past week following the controversy surrounding the death of a young baby, Konnor Smith, whose father Kyle Smith is Connolly’s nephew. There are reports that the baby’s family was dissatisfied with how Government and the National Health Insurance Plan (NHIP) handled the overseas medical referral for the baby. It was stated that the family had requested that the baby be treated in the United States which was eventually organized, but unfortunately not quickly enough to save him. Other reports suggested that during the course of events, Hon. Connolly made some harsh and disparaging reports about the Premier and certain other members of the Cabinet. However, this could not be independently confirmed by The SUN. In the interim, it was widely speculated that Hon.

Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson Connolly was going to resign from the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) and join the Opposition Progressive National Party (PNP). When contacted about Hon. Connolly’s status within the Cabinet and the party, Premier Hon. Sharlene Robinson-Cartwright said the party is taking the matter very seriously. “Our party is united and strong and we intend to focus on carrying out our agenda on behalf of the people of this country and not be distracted by external issues,” she said.

When contacted,Hon. Connolly said: “Not resigning. I have not been informed of being fired. Why should I. I have done nothing wrong.” Meantime, the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death have created a fire storm on social media. In response to the postings, the NHIP issued a press release stating: “We are aware that there has been a lot of misinformation, innuendo and fallacies in the public domain about the level of assistance that was offered to the family regarding the

care of baby Smith. We wish to reiterate that the NHIB acted collaboratively with TCI Hospitals, The Ministry of Health and the parents of baby Konnor Smith within the established policies and norms of the Treatment Abroad Program. We continue to uphold the highest standards of ethical practice which precludes us from publicly discussing or disclosing confidential information about the assistance offered or provided to our beneficiaries.”
