JOSEPHINE MAY BE FIRED by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief

H

on. Josephine Connolly may soon be fired from her Cabinet post as Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, reliable sources told The SUN. Investigations by this newspaper have revealed that relations between Connolly and Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson have been strained for quite some time, but worsened over the past week following the controversy surrounding the death of a young baby, Konnor Smith, whose father Kyle Smith is Connolly’s nephew. There are reports that the baby’s family was dissatisfied with how Government and the National Health Insurance Plan (NHIP) handled the overseas medical referral for the baby. It was stated that the family had requested that the baby be treated in the United States which was eventually organized, but unfortunately not quickly enough to save him. Other reports suggested that during the course of events, Hon. Connolly made some harsh and disparaging reports about the Premier and certain other members of the Cabinet. However, this could not be independently confirmed by The SUN. In the interim, it was widely speculated that Hon.

Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson Connolly was going to resign from the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) and join the Opposition Progressive National Party (PNP). When contacted about Hon. Connolly’s status within the Cabinet and the party, Premier Hon. Sharlene Robinson-Cartwright said the party is taking the matter very seriously. “Our party is united and strong and we intend to focus on carrying out our agenda on behalf of the people of this country and not be distracted by external issues,” she said.

Hon. Josephine Connolly

When contacted,Hon. Connolly said: “Not resigning. I have not been informed of being fired. Why should I. I have done nothing wrong.” Meantime, the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death have created a fire storm on social media. In response to the postings, the NHIP issued a press release stating: “We are aware that there has been a lot of misinformation, innuendo and fallacies in the public domain about the level of assistance that was offered to the family regarding the

care of baby Smith. We wish to reiterate that the NHIB acted collaboratively with TCI Hospitals, The Ministry of Health and the parents of baby Konnor Smith within the established policies and norms of the Treatment Abroad Program. We continue to uphold the highest standards of ethical practice which precludes us from publicly discussing or disclosing confidential information about the assistance offered or provided to our beneficiaries.”

JOSEPHINE MAY BE FIRED

The statement added: “We wish to reassure the public of our commitment to managing the Treatment Abroad Program within the existing policies and procedures that have been established for the benefit of all our beneficiaries. The unexpected nature of baby Smith’s death is particularly poignant and we extend our deepest condolences to the Smith Family. Our prayers and best wishes are with them during this time of bereavement.” Investigations by The SUN revealed that the baby’s

family was offered treatment abroad in Columbia in South America and the Caribbean, but these were refused. They then reportedly asked for the child to go to Joe Dimaggio’s Children’s Hospital in the USA, which was outside the policy’s work. The NHIP then offered treatment Kendal regional hospital where the mother had care, but this too was refused. According to sources, the baby stabilized and the family began its own plan to go to Joe Dimaggio Hospital. It is understood that

Minister of Health Hon. Eddie Astwood was involved in the discussions as this falls within his portfolio. The SUN understands that the baby’s family needed financial assistance and the Government committed $300,000 towards the care as this was the amount that would have been spent at a hospital in the network. The Minister of Finance, who is also the Premier, was involved only when the question of money came about and a request for assistance for a facility outside the network,

sources said. It is reported that the NHIP was in regular contact with the family, but then there was a disconnect until the following morning when it was revealed that the family elected to go to Columbia, which they had previously refused, and made their own arrangements. According to sources, the NHIP’s process did not delay care, but rather, did all that all it could have done under the policy which offered Columbia from the first day.

Increase in number of pink eye/conjunctivitis cases of in the TCI The Ministry of Health, Agriculture and Human Services wishes to advise the public of an increase number of cases of conjunctivitis in the TCI. Conjunctivitis, also called “pink eye”, is defined as an inflammation of the conjunctiva and can be caused by virus, bacteria or allergy. It can affect children and adults. Viral conjunctivitis is typically caused by a virus that can also cause the common cold. A person may have symptoms of conjunctivitis alone, or as part of a general cold syndrome like fever, a sore throat, and runny nose. Viral conjunctivitis is highly contagious. Usually, people catch it

from touching something that has been in contact with an infected person’s eye (eg, door handle, towel or pillow case) and then that person touches his or her eyes. If you have pink eye, your eye (or eyes) might:Turn pink or red; Weep or ooze a gooey liquid; Become itchy or burn; Get stuck shut, especially when you first wake up. The symptoms can last for several days. The treatment depends on the cause. When pink eye is caused by a virus, the antibiotics will not help. You can use warm or cool compresses, to relieve the pain and irritation in the eyes.

Most cases of pink eye go away on their own without treatment, but it is best to see your primary care physician if you are experiencing these symptoms so that you can be treated properly. Simple hygiene measures can help minimize transmission to others. ●Adults or children with bacterial or viral conjunctivitis should not share handkerchiefs, tissues, towels, cosmetics, or bed sheets/ pillows with uninfected family or friends. ●Hand washing is an essential and highly effective way to prevent the spread of infection. Hands should

be wet with water and plain soap, and rubbed together for 15 to 30 seconds. Teach children to wash their hands before and after eating and after touching the eyes, coughing, or sneezing. ●Alcohol-based hand rubs are a good alternative for disinfecting hands if a sink is not available. Persons with viral conjunctivitis must remain home from school and work to avoid spreading the virus to others. For more information, contact the Health Promotion and Advocacy Unit on 3382772.

Special operation to deal with illegal immigration Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson confirmed that special operation to deal with illegal immigration is taking place in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Speaking during a Town Hall meeting on Tuesday June 6th, 2017 at the Gus Lightbourne Sports Complex, she said. “There is a joint operation that is going on with the Police and other critical agencies including the Ministry of Immigration and I will be delighted for him (Deputy Premier and Minister of Border Control and Employment Hon. Sean Astwood) to share those numbers with you on the success that we’ve been having so far. It is a bigger project and it will be treated as a security issue; bigger than Crown Land Unit, because we are aware that we have thousands and thousands of undocumented persons that are living in illegal communities in Providenciales.” The Premier said she does not believe that any national security strategy will be successful if they are to ignore persons who maybe living in the bushes and it is important for them to address that simultaneously.

A few weeks ago, Deputy Premier Hon. Sean Astwood announced that the Immigration Department will be cracking down on persons who are living and working in the Turks and Caicos Islands illegally. Hon. Astwood said there will be increased operations with joint law enforcement agencies to detect, apprehend, and prosecute, not only those persons who are illegally residing and illegally employed, but all the residents and employers that aid and abet them. This action, he said, is absolutely necessary because illegal residents are among “the main contributors to the many social ills that our communities face”. Speaking during the budget debate in the House of Assembly on April 18th, 2107, Hon. Astwood said: “We have persons who continue to live and work amongst us who do not have the legal authorization to do so. There are an unknown number of persons who have remained in our country beyond the time their work permits expired and those who never had a work permit. There are those amongst us who have remained beyond the time their visas have

expired, and those remaining beyond their temporary work permits. There are the many who have penetrated our borders and found entry illegally into our country by one means or another, but they all continue to live here in less than ideal circumstances. They continue to pull on the fragile resources of our health and education systems, and hold jobs that should be held by persons with the legal right to do so.” Astwood said a major focus for the Immigration and Enforcement

Units will be improved compliance and prosecution. He added: “If you stand as surety for a visa applicant, we will begin to hold you to count to make sure that person leaves the country at the expiration of that visa. We must enforce our laws without fear or favour!” Hon. Astwood noted that over the years, there have been an unprecedented number of work permits issued to foreign nationals without any plan or analysis as to the skills that are required.

No deals cut in poacher’s case in TCI By Todeline Defralien Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson said there were no deals cut in the poacher’s case in the Turks and Caicos Islands, adding that it was in the best interest of this country that they left. Speaking during a town hall meeting on Tuesday June 6th, 2017 at the Gus Lightbourne Sports Complex, the Premier noted that the majority of the 43 poachers have left, two who had pleaded not guilty are still in court. Robinson said, “We’ve had a situation where we could not accommodate those numbers in the prison, so we had to make a part of the Detention Centre under the Ministry of Border Control here in Provo to be designated as a prison. Because it was designated as a part of a prison Hon. (Delroy) Williams’ Ministry was required to provide the supervision, so we’ve had Immigration Officers, not demoted in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos but given temporary status as prison officers in order to make sure that we were in compliance with the law and having a prison operated as part of the detention centre.” She added: “Since that time there was a long period of pleading not guilty. Eventually, we got guilty pleas

from a majority of them. Their sentence was reduced to time served; there was no deal cut. It was in the country’s best interest that they left. We’ve been in court still with one or two of them who choose not to plead guilty. We’ve put in an application to forfeit the vessel and the goods. There was 40 thousand pounds of fish stock, barracuda, parrot fish, lobster, conch properly packaged and it’s costing this country over $500 a day to store from the time that they came in. It cost us in terms of legal aid, it cost us in terms of oversight, food and security and everything at the detention centre.” Robinson stressed that the case is ongoing and adding a cost to this country and noted that hopefully the Turks and Caicos Islands will get closure to this case very soon. Turks and Caicos Islands Marine Police, onboard the ‘Sea Defender,’ intercepted a poaching vessel with a number of fishermen from the Dominican Republic with more than 39,000 pounds of sea food, mostly fish, on Thursday, March 16th, 2017. At approximately 12:12 p.m. on that date, officers saw a white steel vessel bearing the name ‘Captain Blaze’, which was about 80 feet long and had a number of dinghies and over 40 men onboard. It was sighted south-west

Ariana Grande becomes British heroine with Manchester concert LOS ANGELES U.S. pop star Ariana Grande, hardly a household name in Britain before a suicide bomber killed 22 people at her Manchester concert in May, has emerged as a national heroine there following an emotional televised benefit performance. In the days following Grande’s sold-out show on Sunday, which raised some $3 million for a victims fund and became the UK’s most-watched TV broadcast of the year, Britons have embraced the 23-year-old singer. They have called for her to be formally honored by Queen Elizabeth and the city of Manchester. At the One Love Manchester concert, Grande hugged a weeping schoolgirl as they performed her hit “My Everything” before a crowd of 55,000 people. The tiny performer ended the show alone on stage, singing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” in tears. Her team is working to release that emotional final number as a single to raise even more money

Ariana Grande (L) and Miley Cyrus perform during the One Love Manchester benefit concert for the victims of the Manchester Arena terror attack at Emirates Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, in Britain on June 4, 2017 for victims, the UK’s Independent newspaper reported. The concert served as a catharsis for many in Manchester and all of Britain, moving British tabloid journalist Piers Morgan to write Grande a lengthy public apology for doubting her courage. “By coming back to Manchester so soon, shrugging off the latest attack in London, standing on that stage and performing with such raw emotion and power, you showed

more guts, resilience, strength of character and ‘Blitz spirit’ than every sniveling, pathetic ISIS coward put together,” Morgan wrote in the Daily Mail. Grande was herself a survivor of the May 22 bombing, still inside Manchester Arena when an explosion ripped through the lobby area following her encore. Morgan had criticized the apparently shaken singer for quickly returning home to Florida instead of staying to console victims.

But within days Grande and her team began organizing the benefit, which overcame considerable logistical and security obstacles to take place less than two weeks later. Days before the show, she turned up unannounced at a Manchester-area hospital to visit young girls wounded in the attack. Grande carried on with Sunday’s show despite the attack in London the night before in which seven people were killed. She enlisted fellow entertainers such as Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Coldplay and Oasis frontman and Manchester native Liam Gallagher. Daily Telegraph columnist Victoria Lambert similarly apologized for dismissing Grande, who first gained fame on the Nickelodeon teen comedy “Victorious,” as a lightweight pop star not fit to be a role model for her daughter. “Because far from being a cliched child star, Grande has shown herself to be a perfect role model for our daughters after all,” Lambert wrote.

Phil Collins postpones London concerts after gashing head British pop singer Phil Collins has canceled two London concerts due to take place this week after gashing his head in a fall at his hotel, his concert promoter said. Collins, 66, slipped while going to the toilet on Wednesday night and hit his head on a chair, according to the promoter, Live Nation. It said a “severe gash” close to his eye had

been stitched, and that he was recovering well but would be kept in hospital under observation for 24 hours. “Phil sends his sincere apologies and thanks to fans. He has had a fantastic week at his first shows in 10 years, cannot thank people enough for their warm reaction and is excited to return,” the statement said.

Two concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall, announced last October and due to take place on Thursday and Friday, have been rescheduled for Nov. 26 and 27. PM says he will not dismiss minister over US visa cancellation BELMOPAN, Belize – Prime Minister Dean Barrow has brushed aside calls for him to dismiss his Transport Minister Edmond Castro after the United States said it had cancelled his diplomatic and tourist visa. Barrow told reporters that he had seen a letter sent to the minister by the US Embassy here and that “there is no indication of any reason for the revocation of the visas, except that the minister declined to come in when invited to do so to discuss the whole issue of

renewal of the visas since those visas were about to expire. “As the minister has said, and that’s clear from the letter that, what he said was confirmed by the letter, he refused to go in because he’s saying that he’s not interested. In other words, had the visas not been revoked, had they been allowed to expire in the next couple of months he would not have sought any renewal,” Barrow added. Heroin smuggler jailed for 12 years in Bermuda HAMILTON, Bermuda – A 26-year-old man, who showed no remorse, has been jailed for 12 years by a Supreme Court judge over drugs charges, while his 55-year-old mother received a suspended 12-month sentence. Damon Morris was convicted by a jury of conspiring to import heroin and possessing cocaine among other charges. His mother, Denise Morris, was found guilty of money laundering. During their seven and a half week trial, the jury heard that

He subsequently excreted the items, which were found to be 86.38 grams of heroin with a street value of US$253,380. Top Trump administration official travels to Haiti WASHINGTON – Just eight days after granting limited Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to 58,000 undocumented Haitians living in the United States, a senior Trump administration official is traveling to the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country. The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said that its Secretary, John F. Kelly, is travelling to Haiti on Wednesday “where he will meet with President Jovenel Moïse and other senior government officials.” DHS said in a very brief statement that Kelly will “discuss international cooperation and issues related to repatriation, as well as efforts to build Haiti’s maritime law enforcement capacity, and to encourage cooperation between the Dominican Republic and Haiti’s nascent border security unit.” Kelly’s visit comes after announcing last week Monday that he was granting a six-month TPS extension to Haitians living illegally in the US. The extension, which becomes effective on July 23, and runs through January 22, 2018. But Kelly warned that the extension should allow Haitian TPS recipients living in the US “time to attain travel documents and make other necessary arrangements for their ultimate departure from the United States, and should also provide the Haitian government with the time it needs to prepare for the future repatriation of all current TPS recipients.” In making the decision to grant Haitians limited TPS, rather than the usual 18 months, Kelly said conditions in Haiti had “substantially improved since the earthquake in 2010.” He cited, among other things, the impending withdrawal of the United Nations Stabilization Mission (MINUSTAH) in Haiti after 13 years; newly elected President Moïse’s promise to rebuild the razed National Palace; and the closure of most of the tent cities. But Haitians in the US are querying their fate after the limited TPS ends. Miami resident Evita Fremont, 48, like thousands of her compatriots, wondered what she would be going back to, according to the Miami Herald. “If they tell you to get out, you have to get out,” she told the paper. “Haiti is my country, but it doesn’t have jobs. So, I am going back to do what?” Seven years after the devastating earthquake, they say, Haiti is still recovering from the collapse of its economy, and is struggling to restore social and economic normalcy, the newspaper reported. Last week, the Trump administration proposed cutting the US$191 million in assistance it gave to Haiti in the 2016-2017 budget by US$33.4 million next year. The Miami Herald said that’s on top of drastic reductions in the US contribution to the UN’s peacekeeping operations and humanitarian programs around the globe, including Haiti.

The police report that the fire started in a section of the facility that houses 18 inmates , categorized as mentally challenged – the inmates were not injured. PAHO to make health centers in seven Caribbean countries disaster resilient BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has selected 16 hospitals and health centers in seven Caribbean countries to make them safer, greener and more resilient to natural disasters. In an announcement on Wednesday, the organisation said that the initiative will be undertaken within the framework of the Smart Health Care Facilities Project, backed by UK aid, the UK Department for International Development (DFID). The project is implemented through PAHO’s Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Relief Department, in partnership with the Ministry of Health in each target country. Health facilities were selected by PAHO after analyzing the safety situation of nearly 350 hospitals and health centers, and their likelihood of continuing to function in disasters. They include the La Plaine Clinic in Dominica; The Princess Alicia Hospital in Grenada; The

Chateaubelair Hospital in St. Vincent and the Grenadines; and the Comfort Bay nursing home in St. Lucia. In addition, PAHO said interventions will be carried out at 12 health centers in St. Lucia to improve disaster resilience, and to save energy and water. The selection of facilities that will be part of the project in Jamaica, Guyana and Belize is still in process. It is expected that by 2020, more than 600 hospitals and health facilities will be evaluated, and 50 will be transformed to be “safer and more environmentally-friendly” under the project, whose budget amounts to just over US$ 49 million. It said the Chateaubelair Hospital serves a population of about 8,240 along the northwestern coast of mainland St. Vincent. As part of the SMART project, PAHO said building safety at the Chateaubelair Hospital will be improved, and the electrical and water system will be replaced to ensure efficiency in use. In Latin America and the

Caribbean, seven out of 10 hospitals are located in areas at high risk of disasters, “which can leave them out of service in the event of a hurricane, earthquake or flood.” “By becoming ‘smart hospitals’, selected health centers will lower operating costs, reduce risks that can occur in case of disasters, and protect the environment,” said Dana Van Alphen, PAHO project coordinator. A health facility is considered “smart” when it combines structural and operational safety with environmentally-friendly interventions, with a reasonable costbenefit ratio. In “green” hospitals, PAHO said air quality improves, staff work under more favorable conditions, and costs for energy and water consumption decrease. These benefits also affect the decision of the people to go to health centers, PAHO said. As part of the initiative, participating hospitals are expected to reinforce roofs and windows so

they will not be damaged when there are hurricanes. Hospitals will also work on installing water tanks to collect rainwater for services, laundry and gardens, as well as to install solar panels, provide accessibility for people with disabilities, use LED bulbs that consume less energy and replace old air conditioning equipment with more efficient models. According to PAHO, the initiative builds on the Smart Project, which began as a pilot in 2012, and improved structural safety and reduced energy and water use in hospitals in Georgetown in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Pogson in St. Kitts and Nevis. In this second phase, which began in 2015, PAHO said it trained more than 200 people from various sectors – construction, public officials, private sector – in energy and water conservation, use of the Smart toolkit, and contingencies for health facilities. The project is currently ready to commence refurbishment work at selected facilities.

Bermuda elections on July 18 General elections in Bermuda will be on July 18, Premier Michael Dunkley has announced. The Premier, joined at One Bermuda Alliance headquarters on Reid Street by his Cabinet colleagues, ended weeks of speculation by confirming that he has gained assent from the Governor, John Rankin, for the writ of election that will be officially gazetted tomorrow. “Bermuda has made great strides since the election of December 2012,” Mr Dunkley was quoted in the Royal Gazette as saying. “We’ve worked hard to turn around a dire situation that was hurting Bermudian families in unprecedented numbers. We brought Bermuda back from the brink of economic collapse, and cleared a path to recovery and renewal that is bringing relief to more and more households every day.”

The Premier said that the “politics of destabilisation” had threatened national progress “just as the island is taking centre stage before the world, just as we’re taking flight”. “It is deeply disappointing, and it is why we are here this evening.” But he disputed suggestions that his hand had been forced by the impending motion against him, saying he had contemplated five different slots for the election to fall. “Two have passed, two are in the future, and this is the one that matters — I have called it.” One of the reasons for favouring July was the presence of students back home on holiday, he said. An election manifesto is to be brought out in a couple of weeks’ time. Meanwhile, Mr Dunkley spoke out against negative campaigning,

saying that “people in Bermuda do not like divisive politics — political parties are distrusted for that approach”. “We stand for one Bermuda, not two. We stand for inclusion, and we deeply oppose the politics of division. We believe that by ensuring opportunity and fairness in all things, we can get to that better place where the possibilities for Bermudians are limitless.” Added Mr Dunkley: “For those not yet touched by the recovery, do not despair. The ship has been turned. It’s moving in the right direction, and we’re going to get everyone safely on board. That’s our promise — that’s our commitment to you.” The Premier vowed, if successful in the General Election, to return to the House on July 20, “or as soon as is practicable”, to continue legislative work, including absentee

balloting, fixed term elections, the Boundaries Commission report and roadside testing. The news comes shortly in the wake of a statement from the Opposition leader, David Burt, challenging Mr Dunkley to call a date — or face the Progressive Labour Party’s motion of no confidence tomorrow in the House of Assembly. The Premier had remained tight-lipped on the electoral call as late as this afternoon, telling this newspaper simply: “You’ll find out when I do it.” With OBA founding members Shawn Crockwell and Mark Pettingill both sitting as independents after quitting the ruling party, and Mr Crockwell openly stating that he would vote with the PLP should the motion proceed, supporters of both parties had been on edge at the prospect.

Trump dismisses ex-FBI director Comey as a ‘leaker’ President Donald Trump called James Comey a “leaker” on Friday, the day after his former FBI director accused him in a U.S. Senate hearing of lying and trying to quash an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. “Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication ... and WOW, Comey is a leaker!” Trump tweeted in his first comments since Comey appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Thursday. Trump broke his silence on Comey’s testimony with a single tweet that echoed the points made by his private lawyer

after the hearing: Trump himself was not under investigation and Comey gave an account of his conversation with him to a lawyer friend who shared it with a news outlet. The Republican president stopped short of saying that Comey lied under oath at the hearing, which occurred a month after Trump fired him on May 9. In his public testimony, Comey did not disclose any links between Trump advisers and alleged Russian attempts to meddle in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, an issue that has distracted from White House policy goals such as overhauling the U.S. healthcare

system and cutting taxes. Russia has denied such interference. The White House has denied collusion with Moscow. In the highly anticipated hearing, Comey delivered a scathing indictment of his former boss, accusing him of trying to block the Flynn probe and saying the White House defamed him and the Federal Bureau of Investigation in trying to explain his dismissal. He told the Senate panel he took meticulous notes of each meeting or conversation he had with Trump because “I was honestly concerned that he might lie about the nature of our meeting, and so I thought it really important to document.”

Scottish dreams of swift independence vote dashed

Scottish National Party leader Nicola Sturgeon Scottish secessionist dreams of a swift second independence referendum were dashed on Friday when they lost 21 of their 56 seats to parties that want to keep the United Kingdom intact. As Britain slipped closer to political deadlock after Prime Minister Theresa May’s disastrous gamble on a snap election, the losses by the Scottish National Party (SNP) undermined Nicola Sturgeon’s bid for a second independence vote. Sturgeon’s party, which nearly swept the board in Scotland two years ago, lost heavyweights to a Conservative Party reinvigorated by Scottish leader Ruth Davidson. Those losses included former leader Alex Salmond, who led Scotland in the unsuccessful bid for independence in 2014, and the SNP’s top lawmaker in the British Parliament, Angus Robertson. “The union is safer than it was,” political commentator David Torrance said. While the loss of seats pushes the issue of a second referendum onto a back burner for now, opinion polls show about 45 percent of Scottish voters support independence. Sturgeon said it was “a disappointing result” for her party, two years after it won a landslide in Scotland, and admitted that the focus on independence was undoubtedly a factor in the poor result. She has argued that last year’s Brexit ballot called the future of the United Kingdom into question because England and Wales voted to leave the European Union but Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to stay. Sturgeon said she would now seek an alliance with like-minded parties to try to keep the Conservatives out of government and to keep both Scotland and the UK within the single European market as part of the Brexit talks. “Last night it was shown that the reckless pursuit of a hard Brexit must be abandoned,” she said “I’m appealing to (lawmakers) from all parties to join together to try to keep Scotland and the UK in the single market .. and bring some order to the negotiations.” The SNP still took 35 of Scotland’s 59 seats in Britain’s 650-seat national parliament, while the Conservatives won 13 Scottish seats, achieving the second largest share of the vote. Labour won seven and the Liberal Democrats four. All three nationwide British parties won just one seat each in 2015. In the election campaign, the SNP sought to focus on Conservative austerity measures and Brexit, but the other parties hammered home the theme of stopping a second referendum. Sturgeon appears to have erred badly on timing, after winning a mandate from the Scottish parliament for a second independence ballot by arguing that the Brexit result changed the rules of the game.

Comey says Trump fired him to undermine FBI Russia investigation Former FBI Director James Comey accused President Donald Trump on Thursday of firing him to try to undermine the agency’s investigation of possible collusion by Trump’s campaign with Russia’s alleged efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election. In the most eagerly anticipated U.S. congressional hearing in years, Comey told lawmakers the Trump administration had lied and defamed him and the Federal Bureau of Investigation after the president dismissed him on May 9. During more than two hours of testimony, Comey told the Senate Intelligence Committee he believed Trump had directed him in February to drop an FBI probe into the Republican president’s former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, as part of the broader Russia investigation. Comey would not say whether he thought the president sought to obstruct justice, but added it would be up to special counsel Robert Mueller, who is now investigating the Russia allegations, “to sort that out.” “I don’t think it’s for me to say whether the conversation I had with the president was an effort to obstruct. I took it as a very disturbing thing, very concerning,” Comey testified. Sitting alone at a small table facing a bank of senators who fired question after question, Comey gave short, deliberative answers. He painted a picture of an overbearing president he did not trust and who pressured him to stop the FBI probe of Flynn. Trump critics say any efforts by the president to hinder an FBI probe could amount to obstruction of justice. Such an offense potentially could lead to Trump being impeached, although his fellow Republicans who control Congress have shown little appetite for such a move. In a speech to supporters across town, Trump vowed to fight on. “We’re under siege ... but we will come

out bigger and better and stronger than ever,” he said. Comey did not make any major disclosures about any links between Trump or his associates and Russia, an issue that has dogged the president’s first months in office and distracted from his policy goals such as overhauling the U.S. healthcare system and making tax cuts. Russia has denied such interference. The White House has denied any collusion with Moscow. Nevertheless, the Russia matter likely will continue to overshadow Trump’s presidency, especially as the FBI probe has ensnared not only Flynn but Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, Jared Kushner. Attorney General Jeff Sessions has had to recuse himself from the investigation. Comey’s testimony drew renewed attention to Sessions and his relationship with Russia’s ambassador to the United States, Sergei Kislyak. After Trump fired Comey, the administration gave differing reasons for his dismissal. Trump later contradicted his own staff and acknowledged on May 11 he fired Comey because of the Russia matter. Asked why he thought Trump fired him, Comey said he did not know for sure. He added: “Again, I take the president’s words. I know I was fired because of something about the way I was conducting the Russia investigation was in some way putting pressure on him, in some way irritating him, and he decided to fire me because of that.” Comey said repeatedly there were details he could not discuss in a public session, making clear he had sensitive information he could disclose only in a closed session with the senators. ‘LIES, PLAIN AND SIMPLE’ Comey said Trump’s administration had defamed him in comments made after his firing by

June. Comey said he felt he needed to get his account of his conversations with Trump in the public sphere in the hope it might prompt the appointment of a special counsel, which later occurred. Comey said he gave copies of his memo memorializing his talks with Trump to people outside the Justice Department and asked a friend to share its contents with a journalist. Supreme Court temporarily blocks Alabama execution of man convicted of three murders The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday temporarily blocked Alabama’s execution of a man for the 1994 murders of three fast-food workers during a late-night robbery. Alabama had planned to put Robert Melson, 46, to death by lethal injection on Thursday evening at its death chamber in Atmore. If the execution goes ahead, it will be the 13th this year in the United States and the second in Alabama in 2017. “Upon consideration of the application of counsel for the applicant, it is ordered that execution of the sentence of death is hereby stayed pending further order of the undersigned or of the court,” stated a document signed by Supreme Court

Justice Clarence Thomas and released on Thursday evening. Lawyers for Melson have tried to halt his execution, arguing that a drug in the state’s lethal injection mixture has been linked to troubled executions in Alabama, Arizona and Oklahoma, where inmates could be seen twisting on death chamber gurneys. They said the drug, the sedative midazolam, does not render a person sufficiently unconscious for surgery and its use violated constitutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment. Last week, a federal appeals court in Atlanta issued a stay of execution for Melson because of the drug issue.

Alabama appealed, and the Supreme Court on Tuesday lifted Melson’s stay, allowing the execution to proceed. Justice Thomas’ latest order temporarily blocking the execution came after Melson’s attorneys submitted new arguments related to the drug issue. Melson was convicted of murdering James Nathaniel Baker, 17, Darryl Collier, 23 and Tamika Collins, 18, during a robbery at a fried chicken fast-food restaurant in Gadsden, about 115 miles northwest of Montgomery. As the restaurant was closing around midnight, Melson and another robber forced four employees to remove cash from the restaurant safe and then

ordered them into a freezer, court summary documents said. Melson fatally shot three of the workers while the fourth, Bryant Archer, was shot multiple times but survived, the documents said. Archer identified one of the robbers as Cuhuatemoc Peraita, a former employee at the restaurant, but did not know the shooter, they said. Police later linked Melson to Peraita, who was 17 at the time of the killings and too young to be executed under U.S. law. Peraita was sentenced to life without parole. While in prison, he killed another inmate and currently is on death row, according to court records.

WORLD NEWS Prosecutors seek to use Cosby’s words against him at sex assault trial Prosecutors on Thursday sought to use Bill Cosby’s words against him at his sexual assault trial, showing interviews to jurors in which the comedian acknowledged giving his accuser pills before engaging in what he described as consensual “petting.” The introduction of Cosby’s own statements on the trial’s fourth day marked a new phase of the case after days of testimony from two of his accusers. Cosby, 79, faces charges that he drugged and sexually assaulted Andrea Constand, a former employee of his alma mater Temple University, at his Philadelphia-area home in 2004. The married star of the 1980’s hit television family comedy “The Cosby Show” has faced similar allegations from dozens of women. He has denied all of the claims. Only Constand’s accusation has resulted in criminal charges because the other alleged incidents are too old to prosecute.

Melenchon said Macron “lacked the social base” to push through labor reforms that critics say would weaken the traditionally muscular trade unions. LREM retorts that its candidate list fits its declared aim of making French politics more representative. “They are men and women, citizens, unionists, business leaders, people who have real experience and who represent a little bit of France. To represent France, it’s a good thing to bring them together,” Castaner said earlier this week.

Faced with more drought, Zimbabwe’s farmers hang up their plows Preparing his threehectare plot of land for planting each year used to take Musafare Chiweshe – or the laborers he hired – two weeks. Now it takes just hours. Better yet, the land is producing a crop even as southern Africa’s droughts grow stronger and more frequent, a problem linked to climate change. That’s because Chiweshe is no longer plowing a portion of his farm, but instead planting his seeds directly into the intact soil, a water-conserving technique called “no-till” farming. “Come next year you will find even bigger cobs in my field,”

Cosby also said he gave Constand 1-1/2 Benadryl pills on the night of the alleged assault after she said she was tense and sleep-deprived. “I have three friends for you to make you relax,” he said he told her. Constand told jurors that she became barely conscious and unable to resist. In a police interview in 2005 that was also shown to jurors, Cosby said what followed was consensual “petting.” Cosby lawyer Brian McMonagle focused on discrepancies in Constand’s 2005 statements to police, including her initial failure to mention the earlier encounter, when she said she rebuffed his advances. Prosecutors on Friday are expected to continue presenting jurors with portions of Cosby’s deposition, including his admission that he gave the sedative Quaalude to young women.

Australian police to get greater powers to shoot in militant sieges

Australian police stand at the site of a siege at the Buckingham Serviced Apartments in Melbourne, Australia, June 6, 2017 Police in Australia’s most populous state will be allowed to shoot suspects in “terrorist related” incidents even if the attacker does not pose an imminent threat, under a proposed law, New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian said on Thursday. The change comes after a series of “lone wolf” Islamist-inspired attacks, the most serious of which raised questions about the traditional police strategy of “contain and negotiate” in hostage situations. Under the proposal, which is likely to be adopted in the state’s parliament given the support for it, lethal force can be used immediately if an incident is declared “terrorist related” by the state’s most senior police officer, Berejiklian told reporters in Sydney. Currently, police have to wait until a suspect demonstrates an imminent threat to others. Authorities said that law curtailed their ability to end a 2014 siege in Sydney’s Lindt Cafe in which three people including the hostage-taker were killed. Mick Fuller, commissioner of state police, said the change was needed to correct a “gray area”. “When you get in a situation like with Lindt and you have a sniper who is sitting 300 meters away looking through a scope, at the moment, they have to determine in their own minds whether they have the legal ability to use lethal force,” Fuller told reporters. “If it is uncertain, it is understandable an officer will hesitate.” Police waited more than 16 hours before storming the Lindt Cafe, and then only after the attacker had killed a hostage. Police killed the attacker but a second hostage was also killed by ricocheting fragments of a bullet fired by police. A coroner said last month police had failed to respond quickly enough. Fuller said last month police would be more a terror-related hostage situation. The cafe siege, which began on Dec. 15, 2014, was Australia’s most deadly violence inspired by Islamic State militants.

Judge overturns life sentences for D.C. sniper Lee Boyd Malvo

A federal judge on Friday tossed out life prison terms for one of two men convicted in a deadly Washington, D.C. area shooting spree, saying he must be re-sentenced in light of a U.S. Supreme Court ruling, the Washington Post reported. Lee Boyd Malvo, 32, was one of two men found guilty in the series of sniper shootings in the fall of 2002 that killed 10 people, wounded three others and left residents of Washington, D.C. suburbs traumatized. His co-defendant, John Allen Muhammad,

was sentenced to death and executed in 2009. Malvo, who was 17 at the time of the shootings, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled such sentences unconstitutional for juveniles and later found that the ruling should be applied retroactively. U.S. District Judge Raymond Jackson cited that Supreme Court decision in ordering that Malvo be resentenced, the Post reported. The ruling does not

affect Malvo’s convictions or the six life sentences that he was given in Maryland, the paper reported, although his attorneys are appealing those as well. In the years following his conviction Malvo said he was sexually abused by Muhammad from the age of 15 until the time they embarked on the shooting spree from inside a blue Chevrolet Caprice. Venezuela soccer coach urges Maduro to ‘Stop the weapons!’ Fresh from leading Venezuela’s Under-20 soccer squad to a World Cup final, coach Rafael Dudamel on Thursday urged President Nicolas Maduro to help stop political violence that has killed at least 67 people in the last two months. Dudamel was speaking after his team, nicknamed the “Vinotinto” (Red Wine) for their burgundy colors, beat Uruguay 4-3 on penalties in the semi-final of the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in South Korea. “Mr. President, let’s stop the weapons now. The only thing those kids going onto the streets want is a better Venezuela ... the same as the Vinotinto kids,” Dudamel said after the match, referring to young protesters fighting security forces. “Today, a 17-year-old has given us joy, and yesterday a 17-yearold died,” he added of the latest fatality.

The Under-20 squad meets England, 3-1 victors over Italy in the other semifinal, in Sunday’s final. Dudamel’s comments were only carried locally on one cable sports TV channel in the early morning, but they were also widely circulated by social media during the day.

Sony’s PlayStation VR headset sales top one million units

A hostess helps a woman to wear Sony’s PlayStation VR headset at Tokyo Game Show 2016 in Chiba, east of Tokyo, Japan, September 15, 2016 Sony Corp has sold more than one million units of its virtual reality (VR) headset globally, the Asia chief of the Japanese firm’s gaming unit said on Wednesday, as a relatively low price helps push the product into an early lead. Sales of the PlayStation VR headset, released in October, have “exceeded our expectations,” Atsushi Morita, president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia, said in an interview. “We are boosting production and a supply shortage should be solved accordingly,” Morita told Reuters. The sales momentum supports analysts’ view that Sony is in a good position to build an early lead in the high-end VR headset race with its more modest price tag and by tapping the nearly 60 million users of its flagship PlayStation 4 console. The headset, designed to work with the PlayStation 4 rather than requiring new equipment, retails at $399, cheaper than Facebook Inc’s $599 Oculus Rift and HTC Corp’s $799 Vive. According to researcher IDC, about 2 million VR headsets were shipped worldwide in the first three months of 2017. Excluding cheaper smartphone-based headsets, Sony ranked top with 429,000 units. Morita stressed it was still the beginning of Sony’s long-term vision of VR eventually taking over functions offered by television sets. “I believe that VR technology is the (greatest) innovation since the birth of television,” he said. “VR allows you to travel to World Heritage sites or to space while staying at home. It’s like a time machine or a door to anywhere.”

BlackBerry offers software for running computer systems on cars

A Blackberry sign is seen in front of their offices BlackBerry Ltd said it has developed new software for running complex computer systems on vehicles, giving the once dominant smartphone maker a leg up in a burgeoning segment of the technology market. The company declined to name any automakers who plan to use the technology, but senior BlackBerry executive John Wall said “multiple” car companies have started incorporating it into onboard computer systems of vehicles that are currently in development. BlackBerry touted the product, the QNX Hypervisor 2.0, as a way to make vehicles more secure from hacking, saying it can isolate multiple systems to run on a single piece of silicon, allowing them to isolate functions critical to safety from systems that are exposed to wireless networks. “Think of a house, and a burglar getting into a room. So even if the burglar does get into that room, the door is locked, he can’t get out of that room. And even if he can get into the hallway, the other rooms are locked,” Wall, the head of BlackBerry’s QNX division said in a teleconference with reporters. QNX has a strong position in the market for internet-connected car infotainment systems, and is looking to boost sales by expanding into more of the vehicle. The automotive industry is one of the fastest-growing segments of the technology market, as automakers race to add more autonomous features and ultimately seek to build self-driving cars. Qualcomm Inc said the new hypervisor is compatible with its Snapdragon 820Am automotive processor, enabling carmakers to reduce hardware complexity and costs by putting multiple systems on a single platform. BlackBerry shares were little changed in morning trade. They have soared about 63 percent since late March on hopes for high sales growth from QNX and other relatively new products.

Bolt treasured by Jamaicans not only for his speed

Usain Bolt’s value to Jamaica over the last decade has gone far beyond just winning medals on the track, the island’s leading athletes and politicians said, as the sprint king prepares for his final race on home soil this week. The 30-year-old multiple Olympic gold medalist, who has decided to retire after the world championships in London in August, will bid farewell to the fans in his island home in the 100 meters at Saturday’s Racers Grand Prix. For Jamaicans he ranks as a national treasure, transcending his sport just as Brazilian Pele did soccer and Muhammad Ali boxing. “Usain Bolt continues in that great tradition of voices that amplify Jamaica,” Prime Minister Andrew Holness told Reuters in an interview at the Kingston National Stadium on Wednesday. “Great personalities like Usain Bolt ... make people want to see what else Jamaica has to offer, so he literally opens doors for Jamaica to the rest of the world.” Before Bolt, Don Quarrie was one of Jamaica’s best-known track and field athletes after he won gold in the 200 meters at the 1976 Olympics. Quarrie said Bolt’s impact was as much about his spirit as about his sporting feats. “He brought so much joy to track and field, not just from his times, but from his personality, which

Usain Bolt of Jamaica smiles as he looks back at his competition, whilst winning the 100-meter semi-final sprint, at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at first people thought was a put-on, but they later realised that it was genuine and they loved it,” Quarrie told Reuters. “Everybody from every part of the world knows where Jamaica is right now (and) everyone knows who Usain Bolt is and it’s not just because of his speed but because they’re captivated by whom he is.” On Saturday Jamaicans will see Bolt run his last competitive race on the Caribbean island. A ‘who’s who’ of modern track greats, including world record holders Wayde Van Niekerk and David Rudisha and double Olympic and world champion Mo Farah, will be among those participating in the meet.

Coleman sets new college mark in 100m

Christian Coleman of Tennessee poses with scoreboard after winning 100m heat in a collegiate record 9.82 during the NCAA Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field As the athletics world begins to ponder life without Usain Bolt, U.S. sprinter Christian Coleman offered hope of a bright future when the 21-year-old University of Tennessee runner became the ninth fastest man over 100 meters, posting 9.82 at the NCAA championships in Oregon on Wednesday. Coleman, whose time equaled Richard Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago’s mark, broke the previous collegiate 100m record of 9.89 to advance to Friday’s final and is expected to make the U.S. world championships team. He also has the year’s fastest 200m time of 19.85, posted into a headwind at a college meet in Lexington, Kentucky late last month. Coleman showed great promise at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March, winning

the 200m in 20.11, just outside Wallace Spearmon’s NCAA record of 20.10. He became the first man to sweep the 60m and 200m at the indoor championships since Justin Gatlin in 2002. Jamaican sprint great Bolt is set to retire from athletics after this years’ world championships in London in August, bringing the curtain down on a career that delivered eight Olympic gold medals. Bolt completed a ‘treble treble’ of 100m, 200m and 4x100m Olympic titles at the 2016 Rio Games, but had his 2008 relay gold stripped last month after team mate Nesta Carter’s re-tested sample showed traces of a banned substance. The Jamaican holds the world 100m record at 9.58 seconds as well as the 200m at 19.19.

INSPIRING THE YOUNG “He ends his competitive career this year, but he does not end the image, and the legacy of course, that Usain will leave.” Jamaica Olympic Association president Mike Fennell told Reuters. That legacy lies in his ability to inspire youngsters to take up the sport, said Warren Blake, Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association president. “When he won the double sprint gold medals in Beijing 2008 and then added the sprint relay gold also in record time, it had an effect right across the spectrum in Jamaica because all the high schools reported that the number of athletes coming

out to train to make their school teams for Boys and Girls Championship doubled.” Maxine Walters, who has produced all of Bolt’s international commercials in Jamaica, said of the lanky sprinter: “He’s an amazing treasure for Jamaica, not just as an amazingly successful sprinter and the fastest man in the world but as a human being with his contribution to his country.” Twelve years of hard work have brought Bolt the level of supremacy and excellence he has achieved, Glen Mills, his coach since 2005, told Reuters. “But all good things, one day, must come to an end and he has decided that this is it for him,” Mills said. “He has served the sport well and the sport has served him well and we’ll miss him.” What he will do after retirement is a matter for conjecture but the prime minister said there was an open invitation for him to play a role in government. “The possibilities for him are endless and I’d like to say to him that my door is always open and I have a seat for him anywhere he wants to serve,” Holness added. “I would love to see him take interest in the sport itself from the leadership, governance and administrative point of view.”

Los Angeles bid signals 2028 Olympic Games acceptable A top official behind the Los Angeles bid to host the 2024 Olympics said on Wednesday the city’s primary interest is in the long-term health of the Games, not winning the 2024 bid, the clearest signal yet that LA would be open to hosting the competition in 2028. LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman said in a statement that when the idea of a dual award for the 2024 and 2028 Games was initially raised, LA did not respond with a “now or never” ultimatum. “We could have used that strategy, but we didn’t because we thought it was presumptuous to tell the (International Olympic Committee) what to do and how to think. We’re better partners than that,” he said. LA’s primary focus is not on itself but rather on the Olympic movement and the world, he said. “That may be a surprising statement for an American bid; but, it shouldn’t be because America’s support for the Games has never wavered - ever,” he said. LA is competing against Paris to host the 2024 Olympics. Some think the City of Lights is due after its bids for 1992, 2008 and 2012 were all rejected. The 2024 Games would also mark 100 years since the French capital last hosted the international competition. Last month Wasserman and LA Mayor Eric Garcetti rolled out

LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman speaks as Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti looks on during a news conference following three days of meetings and tours with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Evaluation Commission the red carpet for an International Olympic Committee (IOC) delegation visiting LA, whisking them around to the city’s many sports venues and to a star-studded dinner at Wasserman’s home. Garcetti told Reuters during the IOC’s visit that winning any Olympic Games would constitute a victory for the city, but also said to reporters “why wait for 2028?” LA claims it can put on a low-cost, environmentally sound Olympics because it already has all of the necessary infrastructure in place while Paris would need to build several expensive venues including an aquatic center and an Olympic Village. The IOC will announce its decision in Lima, Peru in September.
