PREMIER DEFENDS FIRING MINISTER

Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson

By Todeline Defralien

P

remier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright- Robinson strongly defended revoking the appointment of Hon. Josephine Connolly as Cabinet minister, saying that she also has the full support of the People’s Democratic Movement’s (PDM) National General Council (NGC). Hon. Connolly, who was sacked on Friday June 17, 2017, after serving roughly six months as Minister of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture, was replaced by Hon. Karen Malcolm on June 19th, 2017. Speaking during a press conference at the Premier’s Office on Tuesday June 20th, Hon Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson said, “I do not fire anyone, I simply asked and made a recommendation to the Governor for the appointment (of Connolly) to be revoked. I think the firing is sending the wrong message. What I can say, is that I have enjoyed the full support of the National General Council (NGC) and sometimes the roads that we are on we have to make sure that we are all on one accord; especially in serving the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands, we have to make sure we are moving in the right direction and we are moving together for the betterment of the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands. That is no indictment on anyone in particular, but I would say at this juncture that we have

This is not the first time that it happened in the history of the Turks and Caicos. It has happened to me and I am very confident that the Hon. Connally will continue to serve the

people of the country. I am very happy that she accepted the offer when I made it and it is unfortunate that our way has parted in this way, but she continues to support the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) and we will continue to have an opportunity to work together.” Premier Robinson said that what is happening in the Turks and Caicos Islands is an unfortunate period, especially given that the eyes of the

world has been turned on them from the swearing in of the first female Premier. “From all around the world persons have been asking what is going on? And I said to persons, while it would have been a dark few weeks, it’s been very positive as well because there’s a lot of encouragement, a lot of upliftment and a lot of people who are saying let’s pass this period. PREMIER DEFENDS FIRING MINISTER Continued from Page 1 I wouldn’t want Turks and Caicos to focus on that period. I would want us to pass it and to say that no decision taken by me or the NGC or the party itself was made based on street talk or frivolous gossip that may find its way on social media. We are more sound, more logical and more reasoning in our governance and it’s important for persons to know that,” she stressed. A meeting was held at the PDM Headquarters on the evening of Monday June 19th to hear from the NGC recommendations and for the Premier to put forward her decision as to who would serve in the cabinet. When asked by media what would the Premier would say to Hon. Connolly to the claims that she was not removed in line with PDM’s constitution, Robinson responded, “The same thing that I would say to someone who poses a question to me about Cabinet and Cabinet functions; what happens in our NGC is not really to be discussed publicly and we are bound by our constitution and she would have had an opportunity to raise that at the NGC level where it was appropriately raised and discussed. Hon. Connolly still has a future in this party, she has not resigned from the Peoples Democratic Movement and I think she has made it abundantly clear that she will continue to serve.” When asked by media how does she deals with the backlash from the community, Robinson said, “Any decision you make, there will be backlash. You can’t please everyone and that is what you have to learn from whatever office you sit in. You’re not going to be able to please everyone. Every time we have elected persons to

Lawyer arrested for serious sexual assault Police have confirmed that a prominent lawyer has been arrested and bailed following allegations of a “serious sexual assault”. Commenting on the situation which was widely reported on social media, Acting Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting said: “”The recent reporting by some media agencies in the Turks and Caicos regarding an allegation of a serious sexual offence has been, in my view inappropriate and

irresponsible. Whilst I can confirm that an allegation has been made by a female of a serious sexual assault and a criminal investigation was commenced and remains ongoing, no person has been charged with any offences.” He added: “A man was arrested and remains on bail. No further comment will be made at this stage regarding the details of this investigation. I would ask that people refrain from speculating or making comment within the media

or social media regarding this investigation as this can have an adverse impact on the investigation and the administration of justice. I reiterate that this matter remains under investigation and further public comment may interfere with the criminal investigation.” A press release issued by police spokesman Kevin Clarke said that in recent days some local media agencies in the Turks and Caicos Islands have been making comment on

a potential police investigation into an allegation of a serious sexual assault. Clarke said: “The reporting has cited what it says are details of the offence which have not been provided by the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force. It is normal practice for the Force not to provide any personal data of investigations until at least a person is charged with an offence. This case is no different.”

New revenue initiatives for the TCI says, Premier Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson stated that there are new revenue initiatives coming for the Turks and Caicos Islands and will not be raised on the backs of the people of this country . Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson said, “We are looking generally at new revenue initiatives that will not be raised on the backs of the people of this country that will help us to broaden the economy in terms of being able to do more with more monies coming in and that will be announced very soon.” She added: “We have not made any decision on removal of any nuisance taxes as yet. You would appreciate that after one quarter of a new budget you would have to see how your revenue is performing and make sure that there are other measures that are in place to assist in any short gaps in any revenue. We have not made that decisions as yet

and of course persons would not expect us to. That would be fiscally irresponsible at this point. We have to see how we are performing with the streams that we have before we make any major decisions and aside from that we have to make sure that we do a complete review of all revenue generation in government.” Premier Robinson said that on June 19 she met with the accounting officers in Government to review our revenue performance for the first quarter, adding that they will continue to monitor our revenues and see what we can do.” “What I can say is that gaming legislation will be pulled up and we would expect a lot of the regulations and the compliance and policing of that area that we will realise an increase in revenue, although at this time we would have experienced one of the major casinos going down there would be a short fall in revenue. We do have initiatives that will be coming on

that we will announce once we would have carried those policies through to Cabinet and we’re able to make those public statements,” Robinson explained. Robinson said the people of TCI can rest assured that they are looking at new revenue initiatives that will not be on the backs of the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Meantime she added: “I must flaunt the new company’s legislation. We expect that it will also help to generate new revenue and I don’t think that we have done that passage of that bill a serious justice because we expect a serious revolution in that area and we have been put seriously on a competitive footing within the region and we expect to see our trust legislation that was recently passed with the passage of the company’s ordinance we expect to see some movement in that area as well.

Statement by Hon. Josephine Connolly on her dismissal from Cabinet

At a meeting held at 9.30am Friday 16th June, 2017 the Premier informed me that my appointment as a Minister had been revoked. I later received the Instrument (signed by HE John Freeman the Governor) dated (Thursday 15th) which was published in the Gazette today. At the meeting with the Premier I was given reasons for my dismissal. Those reasons included false allegations that I was behind some “street talk” intended to undermine her position. I was not given an opportunity to answer the allegations as the decision had already been made. The charges laid by the Premier against me are without any foundation or credence. I am of the firm view that the reasons given by the Premier were a smokescreen to hide the real reason. In leaving the Ministry of Education I would like to thank all my civil servants in all the departments under

my sphere of responsibility including Sports and Library Services. We worked together to make meaningful changes in the education system and to bring positive changes to the lives of the children of the Turks & Caicos Islands. It is one of my biggest regrets that I will not be able to see through the work we had started. I remain a loyal member of the PDM party. I worked hard during the election because I believed in the philosophy of our party. The party is not owned by any individual, but is made up of a collection of people representing the ideals and hopes of its founders and the many good and faithful supporters whose only desire is to see this country succeed. I was disappointed that the PDM constitution was ignored in relation to the disciplining of cabinet members and that the NGC did not have the opportunity to carry out the

due diligence and the investigation to which the PDM constitution speaks. The founders of the party put this in the constitution to stop Ministers being subject to unfair treatment or capricious behaviour by a Premier. I would like to say to the people who voted for me that I am very resilient and I will continue to represent you to the best of my ability in the House of Assembly. I was born in these Islands and I decided to enter into politics late in life because I felt I had something to offer, something to Hon. Josephine Connolly contribute, to my country and to my months as the storm clouds gathered people. It was a dream come true to be your kind words have sustained me. your representative and your Minister To my prayer warriors who and I cannot lie that I am bitterly have kept my focus on God thank disappointed that the opportunity to you, you are right “this too shall pass”. help my people has been taken away To the people of the Turks & Caicos Islands I remain committed to seeing from me. To my friends and the many this country flourish and succeed and people who have given me words of I will play whatever role that God has encouragement over the last three determined for me.

THE COMA By Jessica Corvil

Jessica Corvil

Blacked-out by the trials and tribulations of life, we often lose our sense of mind, giving in to the pain of our infirmities and unconsciously wiping out the memory of who we truly are. My black brothers and sisters lie in a coma. ‘Black lives matter’, you say? Yet we kill our own brothers and watch our sisters become prey to sexual inclinations. The tranquility and

respect that we so desire are more and more elusive among ourselves. ‘Love thy neighbor as thyself ’ is the slogan of the day. Yet the suffering of the family next door is overlooked. Is there even the existence of freedom of speech? Why then nobody knows who killed the young man at the block party? Predominantly, as a people everything we hope and search for is right here among us. We are the hindrance to our own serenity. Searching for the calm, but like the Pacific

Ocean, we form our own storms, unable to be victorious in the battle when the enemy is part of our own army - encamps among us, our own people. Everything we pray against, is exactly what we transmit. When will we as a people look in the mirror clearly and see that we are standing in the way of our very own blessings? We are the reason progress is not being made. Wake up society! Wake up…or will you otherwise remain trapped in your coma?

Managing Pink Eye By Dr. Marsha Barnett Pink eye, also known as conjunctivitis, is one of the most common and treatable eye conditions in the world in both children and adults. In the last few months, this part of the Caribbean has been experiencing an epidemic with a large increase in the number of cases. Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva which is the thin, clear tissue that lines the inside of the eyelid and the white part of the eyeball. This inflammation gives the eye a pink or reddish color. What Causes Pink Eye? The main causes of pink eye are viruses, bacteria, allergens and irritants. When chemicals, like chlorine from a pool or smog from air pollution get into the eye, they can cause an irritation of the eye that leads to inflammation and a resultant conjunctivitis. In persons who are hypersensitive to certain allergens such a dust mites or pet dander, contact with these allergens trigger a reaction causing release of histamine and inflammatory products leading to itching and redness. For both irritant and allergic conjunctivitis, both eyes tend to affected simultaneously. In infectious cases however, the redness

tends to start in one eye and may or may not spread to both. Viral and bacterial infections are usually contracted through contact of infected material such as our hands after touching a contaminated surface, a towel or so on. At times, it can be difficult to determine the exact cause of pink eye because some signs and symptoms may be the same no matter the cause. How Does It Present? The symptoms of pink eye may vary but usually include redness or swelling of the white of the eye, swelling to the inside of the eyelids, increased eye discharge which may be clear, white, yellow or even green, itching and burning to the eyes, grittiness to the eyes and sensitivity to light. The eyes can be so affected that the lids become very swollen and the conjunctiva so inflamed that opening the eyes proves difficult. However, it does not usually affect vision. How Do I Treat It? Because most cases of pink eye are mild viral infections, most will get better on their own, even without treatment. At home, you can gently soak and wipe off crusts and use warm compresses to soothe the area.

Meat / Seafood Department Manager Job Requirements and Responsibilities: •Oversee department staff to include scheduling, training evaluation reviews and assignment of duties •Implement all merchandising programs of the meat department, while ensuring standards of Department presentation and operations are met; Including, cleanliness and sanitation, inventory control, rotation, quality, ordering, variety standards, signing and pricing •Prepare cutting list and process meat according to work plan and standards to maximize sales and gross profits •Posses good communication skills and the ability to conduct and facilitate department meetings •Directs and manages all functions and activities of the Meat / Seafood Department. Helps to manage labor costs and reduce losses due to shrink, damage and pilferage •Handling and cutting a variety of the department’s specialty meats and seafood throughout the day per customer requests and to maintain quality products

You may also elect to use an over the counter pain reliever if you deem it necessary. However, there are times when it is important to see a healthcare provider for specific treatment. If you have moderate to severe pain in your eyes, intense sensitivity to light or blurred vison, expert advice may be necessary. Newborns with pink eye must be seen by a doctor immediately. This is because it may be caused by bacteria, such as gonorrhea, from the birth canal of the mother during delivery and neonatal conjunctivitis can cause complications not usually seen in children and adults such as ulceration and scarring of the cornea. Of course, if you have a weakened immune system for example from HIV or uncontrolled diabetes or a preexisting eye condition that may put you at risk for complications or severe infection, seek medical attention. How Do I Stop Pink Eye from Spreading? Pink eye that is caused by allergens or irritants is not contagious but they can become secondarily infected. Pink eye caused by a virus or bacteria however, is very contagious and spreads easily and quickly from person to person. You can reduce the risk of getting or spreading pink eye by following some simple steps:

Dr. marsha barnett •Wash your hands frequently especially if caring for a family member who has pink eye. •Avoid touching or rubbing your eyes •Avoid sharing makeup, contact lenses and containers, and eyeglasses •Keep your children at home until the condition has completely cleared. *Dr. Marsha Barnett is a general practitioner who also specializes in dermatology. Airbnb to collect room tax in Puerto Rico for government

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Puerto Rico signed a deal with Airbnb on Thursday under which the company will collect the room tax from hosts on the island and turn the revenue over to the U.S. territory’s government, which is mired in a financial crisis. Gov. Ricardo Rossello said Airbnb will oversee the tax collection starting in August to ensure greater compliance from hosts as well as ease the government’s

administrative burden. He said hosts across the island have remitted only about 20 percent of the room tax due. “I would like to thank Airbnb for contributing to the economic development of Puerto Rico,” he said. Officials said the deal will ensure the collection of more than $2 million in taxes for the government, which is struggling with revenue shortages as the island tries to emerge from a 10-year-old recession.

that the United States no longer offers Cubans special immigration treatment. The United States in January ended its longstanding policy of admitting Cubans who set foot on U.S. soil. Cuba had said that policy encouraged its citizens to undertake dangerous voyages on the high seas and put their lives in the hands of traffickers. Ibarra said the United States and Cuba continued to cooperate on drug trafficking issues, within the framework agreed upon last year and despite a fresh chill in U.S.-Cuban relations under President Donald

Trump. He said there had been no high-level meetings on the matter since Trump took office in late January. Trump last week announced a partial rollback in the U.S.-Cuban detente initiated by his predecessor, Barack Obama. “This agreement foresees two high-level meetings per year,” Ibarra said. “Since Trump’s government took office, the first meeting corresponding to the first half of the year has not taken place. “We hope, for the good of both countries, that the United States will not renounce collaboration.”

That activity generated more than $28 million, with the typical host earning $5,700 a year.

Peter Tosh’s son left in coma following jail beating TRENTON, N.J. — The family of the late reggae icon and marijuana activist Peter Tosh is seeking answers after they say his son was left in a coma following an attack in a New Jersey jail, where he was serving a six-month sentence on pot possession charges. Jawara McIntosh has been hospitalized since suffering traumatic brain injuries in the attack in February at the Bergen County jail, where he was after pleading guilty to marijuana possession, his family said. McIntosh, of Boston, performed under the stage name Tosh1. His father was a Jamaicanborn musician and activist who started the Wailers along with Bob Marley. His 1976 hit “Legalize It” remains a rallying cry for those pushing to make marijuana legal. Jawara McIntosh is also a pro-marijuana activist and performed the song outside of the New Jersey statehouse in April 2014 during a rally pushing for state and federal lawmakers to legalize or decriminalize marijuana.

Bernard Nottage is ‘gravely ill’ in hospital FORMER Minister of National Security Dr Bernard Nottage was in a “very troubling and grave state” in the Intensive Care Unit at Doctors Hospital up to press time, according to Progressive Liberal Party chairman Bradley Roberts. According to the Nassau Tribune, tn the latest update provided by Mr Roberts, he indicated that doctors were working hard to aid the veteran politician. Mr Roberts said he remained in contact with the family of Dr Nottage throughout the day Wednesday, but did not say what the 71-year-old was being treated for in hospital. In a statement to the press earlier in the day, the family of Dr Nottage confirmed that he had been admitted to hospital and asked the public to respect their privacy. The short statement read in full: “We wish to advise that Dr B J Nottage has been admitted to hospital. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and appreciate your respect for the family’s privacy at this time.” This comes more than a month after Dr Nottage appeared ill at a PLP campaign rally and almost five months after he appeared disoriented while addressing matters in the House of Assembly. In February, Dr Nottage had

Dr Bernard Nottage risen to adjourn the House of Assembly but instead took a seconds-long pause that did not break until then House Speaker Dr Kendal Major prompted him. Minutes earlier, Dr Nottage, who was serving in the capacity of leader of government business in the House of Assembly, appeared to slur his words when setting a date for adjournment of the lower chamber to February 5. He repeated the word February several times with a smile seemingly acknowledging his earlier mispronunciation. Upon leaving the lower

chamber, numerous MPs expressed concern for Dr Nottage given the peculiar nature of his actions during such a routine exchange. In the most recent incident, Dr Nottage had to be seen by a doctor on Thursday, April 2, for “dehydration” after slurring and stumbling over his words during his speech at a rally at RM Bailey Park. Dr Nottage mispronounced words and had to constantly correct his sentences. His dazed demeanour and incoherent speech led many in attendance to question his overall health at that time. Dr Nottage was forced to wrap up his speech at the rally as the DJ played loud music to drown out his words. The performance had sparked rumours that his behaviour was due to a more serious health condition or signalled his need to retire from frontline politics. Over the course of his political career, Dr Nottage served as a Cabinet minister in one Pindling administration and two Christie administrations. Dr Nottage was first appointed chairman of the National Insurance Board in 1982. In the subsequent general

election in 1987, Dr Nottage successfully contested the Garden Hills constituency. In 1989, Dr Nottage was appointed minister of consumer affairs and then minister of education in 1990. However, Dr Nottage left the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) to assist in the formation of the Coalition for Democratic Reform (CDR) and was elected leader of the third party in early 2000. Dr Nottage unsuccessfully led the party into the 2002 general election. In 2005, he returned to the then governing PLP and was afterwards appointed to the Senate. Three months later, Dr Nottage was appointed Minister of Health and National Insurance by then Prime Minister Perry Christie. In 2007, Dr Nottage was appointed leader of opposition business in Parliament and in 2012 leader of government business in Parliament. Dr Nottage was defeated in the 2017 general election by 22-yearold Travis Robinson in the Bain and Grants Town constituency. Dr Nottage is a trained gynaecologist and was a track and field athlete in his youth.

Sentencing for Jeff Webb postponed for fifth time Former FIFA Vice President and Cayman Islands businessman Jeffrey Webb will have to wait until 2018 to learn his fate in connection with the ongoing racketeering and bribery scandal that has enveloped world football’s governing body. The Cayman Compass newspaper said a U.S. federal court in Brooklyn agreed Thursday to delay Webb’s sentencing a further six months, pushing it back until Jan. 24, 2018. This move comes

just two months after Webb’s sentencing date was reset to July 11. Webb’s attorneys asked, in both instances, for the date to be put off. Webb pleaded guilty in November 2015 to seven counts of criminal conduct in relation to what prosecutors said was a decades-long bribery racket. Webb pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy, three counts of wire fraud conspiracy and three counts of money laundering conspiracy. The scheme described by U.S. prosecutors alleged

London fire, tests show other high-rises have suspect panels

LONDON — Tests so far have found that at least seven high-rise apartment buildings in England have combustible external panels like the ones believed to have contributed to a fire that killed 79 people in London, Prime Minister Theresa May’s office said Thursday. Downing Street said 600 buildings in the country have “similar cladding” to that of Grenfell Tower in North Kensington, which was destroyed by the June 14 blaze. The Department for Communities and Local Government later said that figure refers to buildings with all types of cladding and that not all of them necessarily have cladding made from the same aluminum composite material as Grenfell Tower. Landlords are being asked to check what the cladding on their buildings is made from. The tests are being urgently conducted as authorities try to determine whether cladding contributed to the rapid spread of the Grenfell Tower blaze, which engulfed the 24-story building in less than an

hour. They still haven’t said where and how the fire started. May told the House of Commons on Thursday that government facilities have found combustible cladding after local officials submitted samples in the wake of the fire. “The relevant local authorities and local fire services have been informed, and, as I speak, they are taking all possible steps to ensure buildings are safe and to inform affected residents,” May said. May encouraged the owners of both public and private tower blocks around the country to quickly forward samples of any similar material for testing. The government will work with local authorities to make sure any dangerous material is removed and residents are safe, she said. The Department for Communities and Local Government said it would not identify the buildings with combustible panels until landlords have had the opportunity to inform tenants. The local council in Camden, a borough of London, removed cladding

from one of its buildings for further testing after initial tests showed some panels were “not to the standard that we had commissioned.” It was unclear whether the Camden example was one of the seven mentioned by the government. However, the company that fitted the cladding to the Camden property towers oversaw the refurbishment of Grenfell Tower, a document posted on its website shows. Rydon carried out the refit of the high-rises between May 2006 and October 2009, Britain’s Press Association reported. The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment by The Associated Press. In another area of north London, Tottenham, residents at the Rivers Apartments came home to notices advising them that experts were “carrying out an immediate review of the exterior cladding.” Newlon, a nonprofit that manages the complex and others in London, said fire officials “made some straightforward recommendations for

the building, which we have already started work on.” It said the fire officials “were satisfied that Rivers Apartments is considered a low fire risk building.” Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn called for urgent checks on around 4,000 buildings as Britain comes to grips with the potential ramifications of the disaster. Thousands need urgent assurances about their own safety, he said. “At least 79 people are dead — it is both a tragedy and an outrage because every single one of those deaths could and should have been avoided,” Corbyn said. Corbyn compared the tragedy to the 1989 Hillsborough disaster in which 96 people were killed in the crush of a crowded soccer stadium, and recent sexual abuse scandals involving vulnerable children, arguing that the government had long turned a blind eye to the needs of the poor. “The pattern is consistent: Working-class people’s voices are ignored, their concerns dismissed by those in power,” he said.

American, in its filing, noted potential obstacles to Qatar’s plan, as its rules prohibit “anyone from acquiring 4.75 percent or more of the company’s outstanding stock without advance approval from the board.” It said it had received no request from Qatar for such approval. Further, American said, “there are foreign ownership laws that limit the total percentage of foreign voting interest to 24.9 percent.”

New details emerge in USS Fitzgerald collision investigation Washington Five of the seven Navy sailors who died aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald when it collided with a cargo ship off the east coast of Japan may have been almost instantly “incapacitated” and died quickly, according to a preliminary Navy analysis, a defense official told CNN. That assessment is based on an examination of the point of impact and the berths in which the sailors were likely sleeping. The two ships collided on the Fitzgerald’s starboard side directly next to the berthing area, where sailors sleep. The impact ripped the Fitzgerald open and caused water to pour in. The official also noted the Navy is trying to corroborate accounts which suggest that the two sailors who weren’t almost instantly “incapacitated” attempted to help the other five escape the incoming water. “But at some point the ship somehow lost

It appears that the collision caused part of the guided-missile destroyer USS Fitzgerald’s berthing compartment to collapse inward, making it difficult for survivors to get out communication,” with the two sailors and they also perished, according to the official. All seven were found dead in the flooded area. It also appears that the collision caused

part of the berthing compartment to collapse inward, making it difficult for survivors to get out. The official said It may never be known if the order to close the watertight hatch to the berthing area came while the two men were still alive. The formal investigation will determine who gave that order, but the initial sense is the decision was necessary because water had not only flooded the berthing area but was flowing into other locations including a deck below. The official emphasized that the Navy will wait for all the investigations to be completed before coming to any conclusions about the actions of the crew and decisions over citations for heroism or potential disciplinary action. The official also strongly emphasized that no judgments are being made about the timing of the decision to shut the watertight hatch. It is also not clear if those on the bridge called the commanding officer as the crisis unfolded.

Archbishop says Church of England ‘colluded’ to hide sex abuse LONDON — The Church of England “colluded” with and helped to hide the long-term sexual abuse of young men by one of its former bishops, the head of the church said Thursday. Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby apologized to the victims of ex-bishop Peter Ball as his church published a damning report that detailed how senior leaders did little about allegations against Ball over years and even appeared to cover up the case. Welby ordered the independent report after Ball was convicted and imprisoned in 2015 for misconduct in public office and indecent assaults against teenagers and young men from the 1970s to 1990s. North Korea tests rocket engine North Korea has carried out another test of a rocket engine that the United States believes could be part of its program to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile, a U.S. official told Reuters on Thursday. The United States assessed that the test, the latest in a series of engine and missile tests this year, could be for the smallest stage of an ICBM rocket engine, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity. A second U.S. official also confirmed the test but did not provide additional details on the type of rocket component that was being tested or whether it fit into the ICBM program. The disclosure of the engine test came a day after the United States pressed China to exert more economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea to help rein in its nuclear and missile programs during a round of high-level talks in Washington. U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that a “major, major conflict” with North Korea is possible over its weapons programs, although U.S. officials say tougher sanctions, not military force, are the preferred option. The head of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency told Congress last month that North Korea, if left unchecked, was on an “inevitable” path to obtaining a nuclear-armed missile capable of striking the U.S. mainland. Still, experts say Pyongyang could still be years away from have a reliable ICBM capability. The continental United States is around 5,600 miles (9,000 km (5,600 miles) from North Korea. ICBMs have a minimum range of about 3,400 miles (5,500 km), but some are designed to travel 6,200 miles (10,000 km) or farther. Trump’s defense secretary, Jim Mattis, said last month that any military solution to the North Korea crisis would be “tragic on an unbelievable scale.” The United States, meanwhile, is ramping up capabilities to defend against the threat from North Korea, staging its firstever successful test to intercept an incoming ICBM-type missile in May. But a test on June 21 of a new capability being developed by the United States and Japan to defend against shorterrange missiles failed to hit its target, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency said on Thursday. It was the second such test of the SM-3 Block IIA interceptor, which is being developed by Raytheon. The previous intercept test, conducted in February, had been successful.

Trump says he did not record conversations with former FBI chief Comey

U.S. President Donald Trump (L) speaks in Ypilanti Township, Michigan March 15, 2017 and FBI Director James Comey testifies before a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in Washington, D.C., May 3, 2017 in a combination of file photos U.S. President Donald Trump said he did not make and does not possess any tapes of his conversations with James Comey, after suggesting last month he might have recordings that could damage the former FBI director. “With all of the recently reported electronic surveillance, intercepts, unmasking and illegal leaking of information, I have no idea whether there are ‘tapes’ or recordings of my conversations with James Comey, but I did not make, and do not have, any such recordings,” Trump wrote on Twitter. Lawmakers investigating allegations of Russian meddling in the U.S. 2016 election had asked the White House for any such recordings of Comey, whom Trump fired on May 9. Shortly after dismissing Comey, Trump mentioned the possibility of tapes in a Twitter post. “James Comey better hope that there are no ‘tapes’ of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!” Trump

wrote on Twitter on May 12. Allegations of ties to Russia have cast a shadow over Trump’s first five months in office, distracting from attempts by his fellow Republicans in Congress to overhaul the U.S. healthcare and tax systems. Comey’s firing sparked a political firestorm. The former FBI head testified before a Senate committee that Trump had asked him to drop a probe into former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s alleged ties to Russia. Trump has privately told aides that the threat of the existence of tapes forced Comey to tell the truth in his recent testimony, a source familiar with the situation said. The White House had said Trump would likely clarify whether he had tapes of Comey by the end of this week. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, said Trump still had questions to answer about

possible tapes. “If the President had no tapes, why did he suggest otherwise? Did he seek to mislead the public? Was he trying to intimidate or silence James Comey? And if so, did he take other steps to discourage potential witnesses from speaking out?” Schiff said in a statement. Earlier on Thursday, CNN reported that two top U.S. intelligence officials told investigators Trump suggested they publicly deny any collusion between his campaign and Russia, but they did not feel he had ordered them to do so. Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Admiral Mike Rogers met separately last week with investigators for Special Counsel Robert Mueller and the Senate Intelligence Committee, according to CNN. The two officials said they were surprised at Trump’s suggestion and found their interactions with him odd and uncomfortable, but they did not act on the president’s requests, CNN reported, citing sources familiar with their accounts. The Kremlin has denied U.S. intelligence agencies’ conclusion that Moscow tried to tilt the election campaign in Trump’s favor, using such means as hacking into the emails of senior Democrats. Trump has denied any collusion, and he continued to cast doubt on the investigations in a series of tweets on Thursday morning.

Google promises YouTube crackdown on online extremism

CEO Zuckerberg tweaks Facebook mission to focus on groups

Google Logo SAN FRANCISCO — Google is promising to be more vigilant about preventing terrorist propaganda and other extremist videos from appearing on its YouTube site amid intensifying criticism about the internet’s role in mass violence. Its crackdown will involve both computer programs and an expanded group of people dedicated to identifying videos promoting terrorism so they can be blocked from appearing on YouTube or quickly removed. Google is making the commitment in the wake of violent attacks in the U.S. and elsewhere. A van struck a crowd of people outside a London mosque Sunday, the second time an automobile was used as a weapon in that city this month, and less than a week after a gunman attacked GOP lawmakers on a baseball field. And earlier this month, British Prime Minister Theresa May called on governments to form international agreements to prevent the spread of extremism online. Some proposed measures would hold companies legally accountable for the material posted on their sites, a liability that Google and other internet companies are trying to avert. Toward that end, Facebook

last week pledged to use more advanced technology and more than 150 human reviewers to find and remove terrorist content before people see it on its social networking site. Although Google said in a blog post that it is been trying to block extremist content for years, its general counsel Kent Walker wrote that “the uncomfortable truth is that we, as an industry, must acknowledge that more needs to be done. Now.” Anti-hate groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center have skewered Google and Facebook for doing too little to muzzle hate groups online. Google, along with other companies such as Facebook, Microsoft and Twitter, recently agreed to create an international forum to share and develop technology, support smaller businesses and speed up their joint efforts against online terrorism. To step up its policing efforts, Google will nearly double the number of independent experts it uses to flag problematic content and expand its work with counter-extremist groups to help identify content that may be used to radicalize and recruit terrorists. The Mountain View, California, company will also

train more people to identify and remove extremist and terrorismrelated content faster. Google also is taking a tougher stance on videos that don’t clearly violate its policies but still offend broad swaths of society, like those that contain inflammatory religious or supremacist content. YouTube won’t remove those videos, but viewers will first have to click through an “interstitial” warning in order to see them. Google also won’t sell ads alongside this category of objectionable video to reduce the moneymaking opportunities for their creators. These initiatives could help Google woo back major advertisers who began pulling back from YouTube earlier this year after learning that their brands sometimes appeared next to unsavory videos. YouTube also won’t recommend these videos to its users, and it won’t allow YouTube users to endorse them or leave comments — all efforts aimed at limiting their popularity. Google is also teaming up with Jigsaw, a company also owned by its corporate parent Alphabet Inc., to target online ads at potential Isis recruits in hopes of diverting them to anti-terrorist videos.

Michael Kratsios, the White House’s deputy chief technology officer, told reporters the goal of the sessions is to find

ways the United States “can maintain its leadership creating and fostering entirely new technologies that will drive our economic growth.” The chief executives of several unmanned aerial system, or drone, companies including Kespry Inc, AirMap, Airspace Inc, Measure UAS Inc, Trumbull Unmanned, and PrecisionHawk Inc are attending the White House sessions. Senior executives at Xcel Energy Inc, Verizon Communications Inc and CenturyLink Inc are also taking part as are venture capital firms including AOL co-founder Steve Case who heads Revolution LLC, 500 Startups, Cayuga Ventures,

Epic Ventures and Lightspeed Ventures. The administration wants to promote the development and commercialization of emerging technologies and speed the development of unmanned aerial vehicles or drones and 5G wireless technology, Kratsios said. The Obama administration implemented rules that opened the skies to lowlevel small drones for education, research and routine commercial use. The Trump administration is considering whether to expand drone use for purposes such as deliveries where aircraft would fly beyond the sight of an operator. Security issues would need to be resolved.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg speaks during the Alumni Exercises following the 366th Commencement Exercises at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S., May 25, 2017 Facebook Inc Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg revised the world’s largest online social network’s mission statement to emphasize support for hobby clubs, civil society organizations and other community groups. The move comes as Facebook faces pressure from smaller rivals such as Nextdoor and Meetup, whose online networks bring together neighbors and people in the same area with shared interests. Zuckerberg said on his Facebook page that his company’s new mission is to “give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together.” The previous mission was “to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.” Facebook’s pursuit of that mission has been criticized in the past 12 months after the network became one of the main distribution points for so-called fake news, which many think influenced the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Zuckerberg said in February he wanted to boost the number of Facebook users who are members of what they called “very meaningful” groups. Only about 5 percent were members of such groups, he said then. The head of Facebook, with 1.9 billion users and $27.6 billion in revenue last year, was in Chicago on Thursday to meet people who run group pages on Facebook. “If what you’re trying to do is run a group that has thousands of people, you need tools to help manage that,” he told CNN in an interview. Facebook wants to build those tools, he said. Alphabet Inc’s Google also hosts community groups, as do Nextdoor and Meetup. Nextdoor, a site for neighbors to meet one another and share news and advice, said on Monday it was expanding into Germany after rapid growth elsewhere. Zuckerberg told CNN that supporting organizations built around neighbors, churches, pets and the like has a larger purpose. “Once people are coming together in these smaller groups, that actually grows and it ends up with much bigger changes in the world,” he said.

Ronaldo seeks Real Madrid exit after tax accusations

Cristiano Ronaldo Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave the club and Spain after being accused of committing tax fraud in the country, a report in Portuguese sports daily A Bola said on Friday. The newspaper said its story was based on a reliable source and that the 32-year-old fourtimes world player of the year had already made up his mind to ask the club for a transfer. It said that Ronaldo was “deeply disenchanted” with the allegations against him. Record, another sports daily, carried a similar story. Ronaldo’s agents could not immediately be reached for comment. Spanish prosecutors have filed a lawsuit against the player accusing him of defrauding tax authorities of 14.7 million euros ($16.5 million) by hiding his image rights income between 2011 and 2014. Ronaldo has denied any wrongdoing. Real Madrid said on Thursday they were confident the Portuguese forward had acted legally. They could not immediately be reached on Friday to comment on the report. Ronaldo led Real Madrid to their 12th European Cup earlier this month after scoring two goals in a 4-1 victory over Juventus in the Champions League final, becoming the tournament’s top scorer. Ronaldo, Portugal’s all-time leading scorer, is the latest in a long line of soccer players in Spain -- among them Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Neymar -- to be caught up in cases over tax or transfers. Ronaldo has completed eight seasons at Real Madrid since joining them from Manchester United in 2009 for a then world record fee of 96 million euros During that time, they have won the Champions League three times and La Liga twice. In November, he agreed to extend his contract until 2021. He is currently at the Confederations Cup in Russia with the Portuguese national team where his team mate Andre Silva said that Ronaldo was motivated for the tournament. “All I can say is that he is motivated, focused on the national team and encouraging us on to win the tournament,” he told a news conference in Kazan, where Portugal face Mexico on Sunday.
