BEACHES OBJECTS TO NEW FISH FRY by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief

B

eaches Resort has formally objected to the construction of the new Fish Fry complex, which will be located across from the hotel in The Bight, Providenciales. Investigations by The SUN revealed that legal proceedings already have been filed in the Supreme Court by the law firm Griffiths and Partners, on behalf of Beaches, which is owned by hotel magnate Gordon “Butch” Stewart. No court date has been set. According to sources, Beaches is objecting to the construction on the grounds that the development agreement which it has with the Turks and Caicos Islands Government prohibits permission being granted for vending in the area. “TCIG will be defending this matter vigorously,” a high level source told The SUN. “It’s a matter of how they (Beaches) are interpreting the development agreement.” Government was expected to shortly break ground on the new complex which will be built on a three-acre plot of land near the Key West Village and Italian Village that are part of the sprawling Beaches hotel. The contract for design and construction of the state-of-the-art facility has been awarded to a group of young local businessmen. When contacted by The SUN, Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson stated: “The government is ready to proceed with this project and I am excited about giving the Fish Fry a new home. The Fish Fry has become a sensation over its short life span, with the event being patronized by locals and tourists alike. We must give it a home. We anxiously await resolution of this matter.” Acting Attorney General Dr. Michael Dillon said: “As this matter involves litigation that is currently before the courts and in its earliest

stages, AG Chambers prefer to refrain from commenting upon this matter but TCIG are committed to fighting this challenge for the benefit of the community of the Turks and Caicos Islands.” Sunil Ramdeen, Corporate Communications manager for Sandals Resorts International, said: “Beaches Resorts is a key stakeholder in Turks and Caicos, and we support any

development that will be of benefit to the people and the country. This particular issue is not specific to Beaches, but also involves other stakeholders in the vicinity as well, and we look forward to positive dialogue with the authorities to ensure that the proposed project will ultimately, be of mutual benefit to all parties that may be impacted.” The Fish Fry, which takes place every Thursday, at The Kids

Park, in Lower Bight, was at the centre of controversy In 2014 when the Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs (DEMA) served an eviction letter on the Tourist Board, the operators of the event. Among other things, DEMA complained about the cleaning up of the location after Fish Fry, and also about loud music affecting residents in the area.
