DEPUTY GOVERNOR DEFENDS GOV’T HIRING By Allie Capron

D

eputy Governor Her Excellency Anya Williams, who is also head of the Civil Service, has strongly defended Government’s policy of hiring Turks and Caicos Islands scholarship awardees. Responding to questions from The SUN about the general complaints of some returning students and their inability to take their rightful place in the TCI job market, particularly Civil Service, Williams said the Turks and Caicos Islands Civil Service operates an open recruitment process where all positions must be filled through open competition. “However all positions below a salary range of $26K per annum are strictly reserved for Belongers. Positions above this level are not restricted, however, belongers are given a preference in terms of scoring ranges,” she explained. Based on reports reaching The SUN, a number of returning scholarship students have expressed frustration and disappointment about not being hired by TCIG. These local graduates returning from their studies abroad are complaining about not being able to take their rightful place in the employment world in their own country. They feel as though job opportunities are limited within their chosen field of study and preference is not given to them. However, the Deputy Governor explained that each year, the priority areas in government are explicitly highlighted in a list with the intention of being used as a guideline for scholarship grants. This, she added, is meant to ensure that those who pursue higher education have a solid chance of securing a job. “As it stands there is no policy in place for the automatic placement of returning students,” Williams noted. “However each year the Human Resource Directorate provides the Ministry of Education with a list of the priority areas in government which should be considered in the granting

As a result, many of the applications received by government represent who have pursued an area of study that does not meet the needs of government. “There unfortunately, most times, is a disconnect in the scholarships that are being granted versus the needs of government,” Hon. continued. “The government’s most critical

Premier criticized for not attending event with FIFA president

By Todeline Defralien

TCIFA President, Sonia BienAime made some very strong remarks criticizing Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright Robinson for not attending the FIFA President, Gianni Infantino event hosted by the Turks & Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA) on Wednesday January 17th at the TCIFA National Academy. Bien-Aime commented on the Government’s malaise and apparent indifference to the sport of football in the Turks and Caicos Islands. In a release issued by TCIFA on Thursday January 18th Bien-Aime stressed that if the TCI is to fully maximize the potential of President Infantino’s visit and what FIFA can contribute to the Turks and Caicos Islands, TCIFA needs the partnership and support of the Government. Bien-Aime stated: “The TCIFA sent an email to our esteemed Premier informing her of this historical event and requesting a meet and greet at her office as well as an opportunity to attend the event. With the attendant opportunity it offered to create long and meaningful relationships between the TCIFA and FIFA. While there were Ministers of Government present and we appreciate, and embrace their attendance, the TCIFA were denied the courtesy and decency of a response from the Premier to any of the emails sent to her. I view this conduct as clear indication of the lack of regard by the Premier, firstly towards the President of FIFA and the office he holds, but also

TCI remains high end destination says, Minister of Tourism By Todeline Defralien The Turks and Caicos Islands which is a popular destination for vacationers seeking paradise will remain a high end destination, said Minister of Tourism, Hon Ralph Higgs. “Turks and Caicos Islands, by virtue, the cost of doing business here, will dictate that it be a high end destination. CIBC FirstCaribbean suspends banking service on South Caicos CIBC FirstCaribbean wishes to advise its clients on South Caicos that weekly visits by the bank’s staff to provide banking services through its agency there will be suspended with immediate effect. Country Head Larry Lawrence explained that following the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, and the severe damage to South Caicos by those storms, the bank undertook a comprehensive review of its premises and facilities in all the islands of the Turks and Caicos Islands. “Our Premises Consultants have advised that the facilities on South Caicos are not fit for use by either our employees or our clients. The bank also has some safety concerns around the temporary alternative accommodation provided as a short to medium term measure immediately

after the hurricanes,” Mr. Lawrence said. “This is not a decision that we have come to lightly and we sincerely regret that this action has become necessary, but it is with regard to the safety of our staff and clients,” he noted. He added: “Clients on South Caicos are invited to travel by ferry to Providenciales to conduct their banking. Persons visiting Grand Turk may also use that opportunity to do their banking at our branch located there. Additionally, they can use our online banking services. We sincerely regret any inconvenience these new arrangements will cause to our clients in the TCI. We were left with no option following the massive amount of damage the two powerful hurricanes left in their wake, and we commit to

providing the best possible service to our clients from our remaining locations.” CIBC FirstCaribbean is a relationship bank offering a full range of market leading financial services through our Corporate and Investment Banking, Retail and Business Banking and Wealth Management segments. It is located in seventeen (17) countries around the Caribbean, providing the banking services that fit our customers’ lives through approximately 3,000 employees in 68 branches and offices. It is one of the largest regionally listed financial services institutions in the English and Dutch speaking Caribbean, with over US$12 billion in assets and market capitalization of US $2 billion. It also has an office in Hong Kong.

Food Poisoning By Dr. Marsha Barnett Gastroenteritis occurs when you ingest a virus, bacteria, or parasite and it causes an infection in your gut. This leads to inflammation in your intestines and usually presents with vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating and fever. CAUSES OF GASTROENTERITIS Numerous viruses, bacteria, and parasites can cause gastroenteritis. Whilst any food or drink that is contaminated by the microbe can lead to the condition, improperly stored, prepared or cooked foods such as meats, eggs and shellfish tend to be common culprits. Inadequately cleaned raw vegetables and even contaminated water often result in vomiting and diarrhea as well. Gastroenteritis can be easily transmitted from person to person. If someone carries the germ on their hands, every time the infected person touches food, objects, or other people, they risk spreading the infection to others. TREATING GASTROENTERITIS The main stay of management is staying hydrated. It’s important not to lose too much fluids and salts through the vomiting and diarrhea. If you have a mild case, you may be able to treat your illness

at home. Drink fluids regularly throughout the day, especially after bouts of diarrhea. Consume high water content fruits such as watermelon but stay away from dairy products and high fiber foods which may make the diarrhea worse. Oral rehydration fluids are ideal especially for children and the elderly. If you are having intractable vomiting, a high fever, or if the symptoms aren’t resolving after a day or two, it’s time to see your doctor. If a child older than three months continues to vomit after 12 hours, or if a baby younger than three months has diarrhea or vomiting, consult your physician. Your doctor may wish to do blood tests to help discern what type of germ is causing the infection and also to assess your levels of hydration. The stool can be tested for bacteria and parasites. Do not take any medications before consulting with your physician. In particular, you might be tempted to take over the counter anti-diarrheal medications but that’s never a good idea as you have ingested germs that your body is desperately trying to get rid of and stopping the diarrhea in that way can be counterproductive. Because the most important thing in treating gastroenteritis is avoiding dehydration, and intractable vomiting means that you won’t be able to maintain fluids and stay hydrated, your doctor may give you medications geared towards stopping

CIBC FirstCaribbean helps the AIDS Foundation in a ‘facelift’

Nassau, The Bahamas -The AIDS Foundation is getting a muchneeded facelift for the New Year, having ended 2017 in dire need of a new kitchen and other renovations. Now, the finishing touches are being added to a set of new cabinets soon to be installed, thanks to a donation from CIBC FirstCaribbean. “At our afterschool program, we have a part-time cook who prepares a meal for the kids – the idea being that once they have a meal then at the end of the day they’ll be able to take their medication,” said Lady Camille Barnett, President of the AIDS Foundation. “Our kitchen was in dire need of renovation. The buildings we’re in now were donated to us in the late 1990s, and not much work has ever been done to them because we’ve had to use our resources for other things. CIBC FirstCaribbean’s donation will go towards helping us finish the renovations in the kitchen area, which is vital to the work that we do with young people.” Established in 1992, the AIDS Foundation engages in HIV/ AIDS education, awareness, advocacy, support, treatment, and prevention.

CIBC FirstCaribbean’s donation to the AIDS Foundation is going towards kitchen renovations, with carpenter Quintin Anderson hard at work giving the non-profit organisation a much-needed ‘facelift.’ Their afterschool program caters to people of all ages, and has three components: academic, psycho-social, and medical. “On the academic side, we have trained educators who work with the kids from 4:00pm until 5:30pm on school assignments Monday through Thursday. The psycho-social component happens on Friday and it’s all the interaction we do to support them in terms of their health, especially

those who are HIV positive. We teach them anything from self-esteem building, to making good choices and life skills. With the medical component we work very closely with the Ministry of Health, because they’re the healthcare providers for these young individuals. We are actively involved with making sure they get to clinic appointments and that they take their medication. “We also found that as some of

these kids have grown up, they need help with job preparation and we’re doing that with them as well. So I like to call this the ‘holistic program,’ because we try to support them and meet all of the needs they have. Sometimes it involves housing – at one point our social worker actually housed three of the kids in her home because there was no place for them to go and no one for them to be with. We try to provide complete support for them and at the end of the day we want them to be healthy, productive, and independent young people – that’s the goal,” said Lady Barnett. Part of that process involves creating a “safe space” that is comfortable for program participants. “There’s still a stigma surrounding HIV, and you don’t want the children coming to a place that’s broken down because that’s not good for their self-esteem. You want the place to look nice. We’re receiving help to renovate our stairs soon, because they’re in pretty bad condition. So along with the donation from CIBC FirstCaribbean to renovate our kitchen – all of that is just giving it a little facelift. I think coming to a place that looks decent and not broken down enhances everybody’s self-esteem.”

Global carmakers to invest at least $90 billion in electric vehicles

DETROIT - Ford Motor Co’s plan to double its electrified vehicle spending is part of an investment tsunami in batteries and electric cars by global automakers that now totals $90 billion and is still growing, a Reuters analysis shows. That money is pouring in to a tiny sector that amounts to less than 1 percent of the 90 million vehicles sold each year and where Elon Musk’s Tesla Inc, with sales of only three models totaling just over 100,000 vehicles in 2017, was a dominant player. With the world’s top automakers poised to introduce dozens of new battery electric and hybrid gasoline-electric models over the next five years - many of them in China - executives continue to ask: Who will buy all those vehicles? “We’re all in,” Ford Motor Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr said of the company’s $11 billion investment, announced on Sunday at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. “The only question is, will the customers be there with us?” “Tesla faces real competition,” said Mike Jackson, chief executive of AutoNation Inc, the largest U.S. auto retailing chain. By 2030, Jackson said he expects electric vehicles could account for 15-20 percent of New vehicle sales in the United States. Investments in electrified vehicles announced to date include at least $19 billion by automakers in the United States, $21 billion in China and $52 billion in Germany. But U.S. and German auto executives said in interviews on the sidelines of the Detroit auto show that the bulk of those investments are earmarked for China, where the government has enacted escalating electric-vehicle quotas starting in 2019. Mainstream automakers also are reacting in part to pressure from regulators in Europe and California to slash carbon emissions from fossil fuels. They are under pressure as well from Tesla’s success in creating electric sedans and SUVs that inspire would-be owners to flood the company with orders. While Tesla is the most prominent electric car maker, “soon it will be everybody and his brother,” Daimler AG Chief Executive Dieter Zetsche told reporters on Monday at the Detroit show. Daimler has said it will spend at least $11.7 billion to introduce 10 pure electric and 40 hybrid models, and that it intends to electrify its full range of vehicles, from minicompact commuters to heavy-duty trucks. “We will see whether demand will drive our (electric vehicle) sales or whether we will all be trying to catch the last customer out there,” Zetsche said. “Ultimately, the customer will decide.” For now, Nissan Motor Co Ltd’s 7-yearold Leaf remains the world’s top-selling electric vehicle and the company’s sole battery-only car - an offering soon to be swamped by new rivals bringing tougher competition that could add pressure to pricing. “Everybody will find out that if you push you will have a lot of bad news on residual values,” Nissan Chief Performance Officer Jose Munoz told Reuters. Jim Lentz, chief executive of Toyota Motor Corp’s North American operations, said it took Toyota 18 years for sales of hybrid vehicles to reach 3 percent share of the total market. And hybrids are less costly, do not require new charging infrastructure and are not burdened by the range limits of battery electric vehicles, he said. “What’s it going to take to get to 4 to 5 percent” share for electric cars, Lentz said. “It’s going to be longer.”

Social media companies accelerate removals of online hate speech

BRUSSELS - Social media companies Facebook, Twitter and Google’s YouTube have accelerated removals of online hate speech in the face of a potential European Union crackdown. The EU has gone as far as to threaten social media companies with new legislation unless they increase efforts to fight the proliferation of extremist content and hate speech on their platforms. Microsoft, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube signed a code of conduct with the EU in May 2016 to review most complaints within a 24-hour timeframe. Instagram and Google+ will also sign up to the code, the European Commission said. The companies managed to review complaints within a day in 81 percent of cases during monitoring of a six-week period towards the end of last year, EU figures released on Friday show, compared with 51 percent in May 2017 when the Commission last examined compliance with the code of conduct. On average, the companies removed 70 percent of the content flagged to them, up from 59.2 percent in May last

year. EU Justice Commissioner Vera Jourova has said that she does not want to see a 100 percent removal rate because that could impinge on free speech. She has also said she is not in favor of legislating as Germany has done. A law providing for fines of up to 50 million euros ($61.4 million) for social media companies that do not remove hate speech quickly enough went into force in Germany this year. Jourova said the results unveiled on Friday made it less likely that she would push for legislation on the removal of illegal hate speech. ‘NO FREE PASS’

“The fact that our collaborative approach on illegal hate speech brings good results does not mean I want to give a free pass to the tech giants,” she told a news conference. Facebook reviewed complaints in less than 24 hours in 89.3 percent of cases, YouTube in 62.7 percent of cases and Twitter in 80.2 percent of cases. “These latest results and the success of the code of conduct are further evidence that the Commission’s current self-

regulatory approach is effective and the correct path forward.” said Stephen Turner, Twitter’s head of public policy. Of the hate speech flagged to the companies, almost half of it was found on Facebook, the figures show, while 24 percent was on YouTube and 26 percent on Twitter. The most common ground for hatred identified by the Commission was ethnic origin, followed by anti-Muslim hatred and xenophobia, including expressions of hatred against migrants and refugees. Pressure from several European governments has prompted social media companies to step up efforts to tackle extremist online content, including through the use of artificial intelligence. YouTube said it was training machine learning models to flag hateful content at scale. “Over the last two years we’ve consistently improved our review and action times for this type of content on YouTube, showing that our policies and processes are effective, and getting better over time,” said Nicklas Lundblad, Google’s vice president of public policy in EMEA.

Former Trump aide Bannon refuses to comply with House subpoena WASHINGTON President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon declined to comply with a subpoena ordering him to answer questions from a U.S. House intelligence panel about his time at the White House as part of its investigation into allegations of Russian interference in the U.S. election. After Bannon initially refused to answer questions about the matter, Devin Nunes, the committee’s Republican party chairman, authorized a subpoena during the meeting to press Bannon to respond. Even then, Bannon refused to answer questions after his lawyer had conferred with the White House and was told again to refuse to answer questions about the transition period immediately after Trump was elected, or Bannon’s time in the administration, according to Representative Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the committee. Separately, the New York Times reported that Bannon had been subpoenaed by Special Counsel Robert Mueller to testify before a grand jury in a probe of alleged ties between Russia and Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, on Tuesday. It was the first time Mueller is known to have used a subpoena against a member of Trump’s inner circle, the Times said. It cited a person with direct knowledge of the matter. A spokesman for Mueller’s office declined comment. Bill Burck, a lawyer for Bannon, could not immediately be reached for comment on the subpoena or his testimony before the House panel. The reported subpoena of Bannon does not mean he is a target of Mueller’s criminal investigation. Bannon, a champion of Trump’s “America First” agenda, was among the Republican’s closest aides during the 2016 election campaign, the presidential transition and his first months in office. But the pair had a bitter public falling out over comments Bannon made to author Michael Wolff for his recent book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White

Longer breastfeeding Ex-CIA officer arrested, charged tied to lower diabetes with keeping documents risk for mothers Mothers who nurse their babies now have another reason to continue as long as they can: longer periods of breastfeeding are associated with a lower risk of diabetes even decades later, a U.S. study suggests. Pediatricians recommend that mothers exclusively breastfeed infants until they’re at least six months old because it can reduce babies’ risk of ear and respiratory infections, sudden infant death syndrome, allergies, obesity and diabetes. Mothers are advised to continue breastfeeding for at least one year, a practice that previous research has linked to a lower risk of depression, obesity, and certain cancers. For the current study, researchers examined data on 1,238 mothers without diabetes at the outset. Over the next 25 years, 182 women developed diabetes. Compared to women who didn’t breastfeed at all, mothers who nursed babies for at least six months were 48 percent less likely to develop diabetes. “There could be greater health benefits for women from breastfeeding than previously recognized,” said lead study author Erica Gunderson of the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland, California. All of the women had at least one baby during the study, and most of them did breastfeed. Overall, 418 mothers, or 34 percent, nursed infants for up to six months. Another 268 women, or 22 percent, breastfed for six to 12 months, and 230 mothers, or 19 percent, nursed their babies for a year or more. Among women who didn’t breastfeed at all, 10 of every 1,000 typically developed diabetes each year, the study found. That dropped to fewer than 7 cases for every 1,000 people each year for women who nursed babies for up to six months, and fewer than 5 cases for women who nursed up to one year and fewer than 4 cases for mothers who breastfeed for longer. A diabetes diagnosis after pregnancy was much more common among women who developed a version of the condition known as gestational diabetes while they were pregnant. But longer periods of breastfeeding were still associated with a lower risk of diabetes later on, even for women who did experience gestational diabetes, researchers report in JAMA Internal Medicine. The study wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how breastfeeding duration might impact the odds of developing diabetes. Researchers also lacked data on how long women may have breastfed exclusively or supplemented with formula or baby foods. “When an infant consumes formula or food they take in less breast milk than if they were consuming breast milk alone,” said Jennifer Yourkavitch, a researcher at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, who wasn’t involved in the study. “A mother’s supply of milk will adjust to meet the diminished demand,” Yourkavitch said by email. “If early weaning leads to a shorter breastfeeding period, then that, according to this paper, could increase one’s risk of developing diabetes.” Even women who can’t breastfeed or choose not to can still take steps to lower their risk of diabetes, noted Yukiko Washio, a researcher at the University of Delaware who wasn’t involved in the study. “They can still work on losing weight via lifestyle modifications and increasing physical activity as a prevention strategy,” Washio said by email. For women who can nurse and want to do this, longer paid maternity leave and health benefits that include lactation support and supplies can help them succeed and may translate into a lower diabetes risk down the line, said Dr. Lori FeldmanWinter, a researcher at Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in Camden, New Jersey.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — A former CIA officer has been arrested and charged with illegally retaining classified records, including names and phone numbers of covert CIA assets. Jerry Chun Shing Lee, 53, was arrested Monday night after arriving at JFK International Airport. He made an initial appearance Tuesday in federal court in New York, but will face charges in northern Virginia, where the CIA is located. According to court documents, Lee, a Hong Kong resident, served in the CIA from 1994 to 2007 as a case officer. He worked in a variety of overseas offices and was trained in surveillance detection,

recruiting and handlings assets and handling classified material, among other things. A court affidavit states that in 2012, after Lee had left the CIA, he traveled from Hong Kong with his family to northern Virginia, where he lived from 2012 to 2013. When he flew to Virginia, for reasons that are not explained, the FBI obtained a warrant to search Lee’s luggage and hotel room. Agents found two small books with handwritten notes containing names and numbers of covert CIA employees and locations of covert facilities, according to the affidavit. A CIA review of the information in the books found information at Secret and Top Secret levels of classification,

according to the affidavit. The eight-page FBI affidavit makes no allegations of espionage against Lee, only alleging illegal retention of documents. Any conviction on that offense carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. The affidavit indicates Lee was interviewed five times by FBI agents in 2013, but never disclosed that he possessed the books. Court records do not list an attorney for Lee. Dean Boyd, a CIA spokesman, declined comment on the case Tuesday, citing Lee’s ongoing prosecution. Court records indicate Lee is a naturalized U.S. citizen and an Army veteran.

Apple plans new U.S. campus, to pay $38 billion in foreign cash taxes Apple Inc will open a new campus as part of a five-year, $30 billion U.S. investment plan and will make about $38 billion in one-time tax payments on its overseas cash, one of the largest corporate spending plans announced since the passage of a tax cut signed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The company has been under increasing pressure to make U.S. investments since the 2016 presidential campaign, when Trump targeted the iPhone maker for making products in Asian factories. While Apple has announced no plans to change that practice and experts say it would be economically impractical to make iPhones in the United States, the company has begun to emphasize its U.S. economic impact, from developers who sell software on its App Store to the tens of billions of The Apple Campus 2 is seen under construction in Cupertino, California in this aerial dollars per year it spends with U.S. photo taken January 13, 2017 suppliers. Apple also said it would boost its advanced manufacturing fund, used to provide capital and support to suppliers such as Finisar Corp and Corning Inc from $1 billion to $5 billion. Apple said it planned to spend $55 billion with U.S.-based suppliers in 2018, up from $50 billion last year. AMAZON VS APPLE Apple joins Amazon.com Inc in scouting for a location for a new campus. Amazon finished taking applications from cities in October for its second headquarters. Amazon set off a scramble between cities across the nation to host the headquarters, and Apple’s announcement stirred broad interest. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel told reporters on Wednesday, “We’re going to go compete and we’re going to put our best foot forward” to compete for an Apple campus. A Philadelphia Department of Commerce spokeswoman said the city would submit a proposal if Apple opened the process for bids. Apple has not said whether it had settled on a new campus location yet, and it did not make any commitments on the size of new spending or hiring specific to the campus. It did say it would initially house technical support for customers and would announce the location later this year. The facility would be in addition to its “spaceship” Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, California; a campus in Austin, Texas, that houses customer service agents and some manufacturing; and an Elk Grove, California, unit with several thousand customer service agents and iPhones refurbishing technicians. Apple also has built its own data centers in North Carolina, Oregon, Nevada, Arizona and a recently announced project in Iowa, and leases data center space in other states.

Early puberty puts women at higher risk for heart disease and stroke Girls who start menstruating before they’re 12 years old may have a greater risk of heart disease and stroke later in life than their peers who go through puberty later, a U.K. study suggests. For the study, researchers examined data on more than 500,000 middle-aged adults who didn’t have a history of heart disease, including more than 267,000 women. Researchers followed half of the participants for at least seven years, and during that time about 9,000 men and women developed heart disease or experienced a heart attack or stroke. Women typically started menstruating when they were 13 years old. When they got their first period before age 12, women were 10 percent more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than when they started menstruating at age 13 or older, the study found.

Obesity might explain some of this connection, said study co-author Sanne Peters of the George Institute for Global Health at the University of Oxford in the UK. Previous studies have linked early puberty to obesity in both children and adults, Peters said by email. “However, there is no straightforward link,” Peters said. “Our findings show that the risk of developing cardiovascular disease increases for both women of healthy weight and women who are overweight or obese, which suggests we need more research to understand the association between an early first menstrual cycle and a greater risk of heart disease and stroke later in life.” Other reproductive health factors also appeared to influence the risk of heart disease in women, researchers report in the journal Heart.

Women who went through menopause early, before age 47, were 33 percent more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and 42 percent more likely to have a stroke than women who went through menopause later, the study found. A history of miscarriages was also linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, with each miscarriage tied to a 6 percent increase in the odds of heart problems. When women had a stillbirth, they were 22 percent more likely to develop cardiovascular disease and 44 percent more apt to have a stroke than women who didn’t go through this. In addition, those who had a hysterectomy, a surgery to remove the uterus, were 12 percent more likely to get cardiovascular disease, and the increased risk was even higher for women who had their ovaries removed in addition to the uterus.

The study wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how puberty timing might directly impact the odds of cardiovascular disease, a heart attack or stroke decades later. Even so, the results add to the evidence linking earlier maturation with obesity, high blood pressure and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease, said Jane Mendle, a human development researcher at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, who wasn’t involved in the study. “Early puberty is correlated with many risks and experiences that are independently important for cardiovascular health - such as obesity, smoking, socioeconomic status, and higher life stress,” Mendle said by email. “Likely, it’s a combination of these factors that explain why earlier development is related to heart health.”

WhatsApp inches closer to revenue plan with accounts for businesses SAN FRANCISCO Messaging application WhatsApp said it would begin allowing business accounts for the first time, a step that brings the free service closer to a plan that would make money for its corporate parent, Facebook Inc . Some businesses already use WhatsApp, with 1.3 billion users, to answer inquires from customers. Business accounts will allow them to set up automatic greetings, see statistics about their messaging and set up a profile page with hours of operation and other information, WhatsApp said. The accounts are aimed at businesses that receive a high volume of WhatsApp messages and need help keeping up, WhatsApp Chief Operating Officer Matt Idema said. “What we saw was a need for businesses to have more efficient tools,” Idema said in an interview. Idema, who was a Facebook executive before he joined WhatsApp last year, said WhatsApp intends to charge businesses in some form in the future, but he said it was too soon to discuss when that would happen or what the future business services would look like. Facebook bought WhatsApp, a pun on the phrase “What’s up?”, in 2014 for $19 billion, attracted by the size of its user base. WhatsApp used to charge a $1 annual subscription fee but dropped it in 2016, leaving the service without a source of revenue. Options for future revenue

WhatsApp competes in a crowded market that also includes Facebook’s Messenger application, Tencent Holdings Ltd’s. WeChat and numerous other messaging services. WhatsApp said its business accounts would be available beginning on Thursday through a WhatsApp Business application in the Google Play store in Britain, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico and the United States. The company said it plans to roll out the accounts to other countries in the coming weeks, and eventually to have a version for Apple iPhones.

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment beyond Cook’s remarks or say when the update would be available to consumers. Apple confirmed on Dec. 20 that software in iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE models to deal with dangers from aging batteries could slow down the phone’s performance. Within days, Apple faced lawsuits over the phone slowing. The issue struck a nerve on social media, where many voiced a theory that Apple intentionally slows down older phones to encourage customers to buy new ones. No

credible evidence has emerged that Apple has ever done so. On Dec. 28, Apple issued a public apology to customers over the battery issue and said it has never purposely shortened the life of its products. Apple also lowered the price of battery replacements for affected models from $79 to $29. The lower price could prod many consumers to replace their battery instead of buying a new phone, which in turn could lead to lower iPhone sales for 2018, Barclays analysts said in a note earlier this month.

Facebook changes News Feed, investors click on ‘sad’

Shares of Facebook Inc fell more than 4 percent on Friday and were on track for their worst session in more than three months after Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg announced changes that he said would hit user engagement in the near term. Zuckerberg said late on Thursday the world’s largest social network would adjust its centerpiece News Feed to prioritize what friends and family share, while reducing the amount of non-advertising content from publishers and brands. A warning by Zuckerberg that people could spend less time on Facebook in the short term as a result of the changes sent the company’s stock $8.29 lower to $179.47. If the stock closes at that level, it would be the biggest one-day decline since September and would shrink the company’s market value by $23 billion, which is more than the

total market value of rival Snap Inc , the owner of Snapchat. “There is too much uncertainty relating to the economic impact of Facebook’s pending News Feed changes for us to be comfortable retaining a Buy rating on the stock,” wrote Stifel analyst Scott Devitt in a research note, cutting his recommendation to “hold” from “buy.” The change announced by Zuckerberg follows criticism that Facebook’s algorithms may have prioritized misleading news and misinformation in people’s feeds, influencing the 2016 American presidential election as well as political discourse in other countries. Facebook said its new ranking system would hurt non-advertising content from publishers and brands, like news stories and viral video posts, but not change the ranking of advertising that has been paid for.

That will leave businesses that want publicity on Facebook no choice but to spend more on advertising, and as a result prices will climb, predicted Eric Schiffer, chairman of Reputation Management Consultants, which advises corporate brands on social media. “They’re definitely going to be required to buy an ad,” Schiffer said. TECH RALLY With its stock up 48 percent over the past 12 months, Facebook has been a major driver of a technology rally that has propelled the S&P 500 to record highs. Its revenue is expected by analysts on average to have surged 45 percent in 2017, a rare accomplishment for a company of its size. Some hedge funds used

Boeing unveils prototype for unmanned electric cargo air vehicle Boeing unveiled a prototype for an unmanned electric vertical-takeoff-andlanding cargo air vehicle (CAV) that the planemaker said will be used to test it’s autonomous technology. The CAV, designed and built in less than three months, is powered by an environmentally-friendly electric propulsion system and can carry up to 500 pounds, Boeing said. “Our new CAV prototype ... presents new

possibilities for autonomous cargo delivery, logistics and other transportation applications,” said Steve Nordlund, vice president of Boeing HorizonX, the unit that developed the CAV. Chicago-based Boeing’s development of the environmentally-friendly electric propulsion system comes as the race intensifies to advance battery technology and electric motors to lower flying costs and move away from fossil fuels.

Airbus, Rolls-Royce and Siemens came together in November to develop a hybrid electric engine, with Airbus responsible for the control architecture of the propulsion system and batteries. In October, a Seattlearea startup - backed by the venture capital arms of Boeing and JetBlue Airways Corp - announced plans to bring a small hybrid-electric commuter aircraft to market by 2022.

Friday’s drop in Facebook’s stock to bolster their positions, said Joel Kulina, a senior trader at Wedbush. “Guys were hoping there would be more of a pullback so they could buy more,” Kulina said. “They don’t think there are any real cracks in the Facebook story.” Changes to Facebook’s News Feed may have an impact on major suppliers of news and other content. John Ridding, the chief executive of the Financial Times, warned on Friday that the domination of online advertising revenue by search and social media platforms was putting pressure on media firms. “The FT welcomes moves to recognize and support trusted and reliable news and analysis. But a sustainable solution to the challenges of the new information ecosystem requires further measures,” he said.

U.S. airlines November on-time rates highest in eight years NEW YORK - U.S. airlines in November had their highest on-time arrival rates in eight years, the U.S. Department of Transportation said on Friday, setting another watermark in a record-breaking year for safety and performance. November also matched the record for fewest canceled domestic flights - 0.3 percent - equal to the record set in September and November of 2016. Leading the flock with the highest ontime arrival rates were Delta Air Lines, with 93.7 percent of flights arriving on time, Spirit Airlines, with 89.8 percent on-time arrivals, and Hawaiian Airlines logging 89.3 percent of flights as arriving on time. The airlines with the lowest on-time arrival rates were Virgin America and Alaska Airlines, both subsidiaries of Alaska Air Group Inc, and regional carrier SkyWest Airlines. Commercial passenger airlines also set a record for safety in 2017, with zero accidental deaths recorded last year, according to groups that track crashes. Despite carriers’ commercial success, 2017 ranked among the most turbulent years for airline-customer relations amid a number of high profile public relations crises and congressional threats of more stringent regulation of the industry. While complaints about the treatment of disabled passengers and about discrimination were both down year-over-year in the month of November, general complaints about airline service increased 27.1 percent in the month to 1,299.

SPORTS Returning Djokovic still managing elbow injury

Novak Djokovic of Serbia signs autographs during Kids Tennis Day before the Australian Open tennis tournament Former world number one Novak Djokovic admits his elbow is not yet 100 percent as the Serb prepares to return from six months out at the Australian Open. The six-times champion, who last played competitively at Wimbledon in July, says he is still managing the injury, which has caused him to abbreviate his service action. “It hasn’t been 100 percent yet healed,” Djokovic told reporters at Melbourne Park on Saturday. “But right now it’s at the level where I can compete, and every day is getting better.” Djokovic said he had been convinced by doctors that he would not be doing the injury any more damage by playing in Melbourne. “I‘m hoping that it can be 100 percent at the start of the tournament. I don’t know how it’s going to behave. Even if it’s 100 percent healed, after six months of no competition, you never know how you’re going to react,” the 30-year-old added. “So let’s see. There’s not much more I can do. I’ve done really everything in my power, with a team of people around me, to enable me to be right here in front of you guys, and to compete in Australian Open.” Djokovic said the injury had been bothering him for about 18 months before the pain, which he felt on his serve, became too much. The Serb confirmed the injury had not needed surgery but would not answer a question as to whether he required a pain-killing injection to play. Djokovic tested out his elbow, and his new serve, in an exhibition match earlier this week, beating Austria’s Dominic Thiem, in straight sets. I‘m really looking forward to trying out my new serve here.” Seeded 14th having dropped down the rankings during his injury hiatus, Djokovic said he was confident he could still compete. “I still know what I‘m capable of and I believe in my own abilities to win against the best players in the world,” he said. “I know that if I get myself to desired level of performance -- mental and physical -- that I can actually have a good chance to go far in the tournament.”

U.S. Olympic gold medalist Biles says doctor sexually abused her Four-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles said on Monday she was sexually abused by former USA Gymnastics team physician Larry Nassar, the latest in a list of female athletes to accuse the doctor of misconduct. Federer says he should not be favorite at 36 MELBOURNE - Roger Federer says a 36-year-old should not really be considered a favorite for the Australian Open, although when the man in question is himself, no one was taking him seriously. The Swiss breezed through his media duties on Sunday with the same swagger he will take on court against Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene on Tuesday, when he kicks off the defense of the title he won against great rival Rafa Nadal last year. That unforgettable triumph ended a five-year hiatus in Federer’s grand slam collection and a few months later, he took his tally to a record-extending 19 by winning Wimbledon. NBC expects ad sales record with Super Bowl, Olympics

The crowds of fans lining the street are reflected in one of the team’s five Vince Lombardi trophies carried by the New England Patriots players through the streets of Boston after winning Super Bowl LI, in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S. February 7, 2017 U.S. broadcaster NBC said on Thursday it expected to hit ad sales records for the Super Bowl and Olympic Winter Games, both of which it will air next month, showing that advertisers are hungry for live events that draw viewers on a real-time basis. NBC, a unit of Comcast Corp, has sold all but a handful of 30-second TV spots, which it is charging more than $5 million on average for the Super Bowl, said Dan Lovinger, executive vice president of advertising sales at NBC Sports Group, on a media call. For the Super Bowl, on Feb. 4, NBC expects to score a singleday revenue record for any media company, he said. The company also expects over $900 million in national ad sales for the Olympic games, which would be a first for a Winter Olympics, Lovinger said. The Olympic Winter Games will be held from Feb. 9-25 in Pyeongchang, South Korea. NBC estimated ad sales of nearly $1.4 billion for both the Super Bowl and the Olympics. Live events remain a bright spot for television advertisers as more viewers tend to watch their favorite shows on demand and fast-forward through the commercials. The Super Bowl traditionally ranks as the year’s most-watched event on U.S. television. The event last year, which was broadcast by

21st Century Fox, drew 111.3 million viewers, slightly down from the 111.9 million a year earlier. Big Super Bowl ratings are important for ad revenue as the NFL comes off the second season of declining viewership. In 2017, viewership dropped almost 10 percent to 14.9 million viewers, according to Nielsen. Advertisers have not expressed any concern about ratings around the Super Bowl, Lovinger said. Additionally controversy over players kneeling during the national anthem in protest has not come up as a concern, he said. In a gesture initiated in the 2016 season by then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, several NFL players have routinely “taken one knee” during the playing of the anthem. It is intended to call attention to what the protesting players see as a pattern of racism in the treatment of African-Americans by U.S. police. A vast stable of advertisers will run spots during this year’s Super Bowl, with car makers continuing to have a strong presence and increased buying by consumer packaged goods companies, Lovinger said. “All we have seen is enthusiasm for the Super Bowl,” he said.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino makes courtesy call to TCIFA President Sonia Bien-Aime

The New Year in the world of Football in the Turks and Caicos Islands got off to a phenomenal start. Wednesday, January 17th, 2018 marks a momentous day in history for the Turks & Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA). Since itsinception in 1996, and subsequently become a member of FIFA in 1998, the TCIFA never had a sitting or even a past president of Football’s World Governing body, FIFA, visited its shores. All this changed yesterday (January 17, 2018) when current President Gianni Infantino paid a courtesy visit on TCIFA,s President and FIFA Council Member Sonia Bien-Aime. “This is definitely history in the making, not only for TCIFA but Turks & Caicos Islands on a whole” said TCIFA President, Sonia BienAime “I am proud, and I am thankful for the support that President Infantino and FIFA has contributed to the TCIFA and our region. With all of the assistance they have provided, it makes all of our successes possible.” In commenting further President BienAime reflected on the TCIFA’s growth since its formation. “The growth and development of football in the Turks and Caicos Islands has been rapid and constant in both the numbers and quality of the players. This landmark visit by President Infantino is a testament of the support of FIFA and its relationship with the TCIFA. It will go miles in continuing the support and

in cementing that relationship”. President Bien-Aime also commented on the Government’s malaise and apparent indifference to the sport of football in the Turks and Caicos Islands. “If we are to fully maximize the potential of President Infantino’s visit and what FIFA can contribute to the Turks and Caicos Islands, we need the partnership and support of the Government. The TCIFA sent an email to our esteemed Premier informing her of this historical event and requestinga meet and greet at her office as well as an opportunity to attend the event. With the attendant opportunityit offered to create long and meaningful relationships between the TCIFA and FIFA. While there were Ministers ofGovernment present and we appreciate, and embrace their attendance, the TCIFA were denied the courtesy and decency of a response from the Premier to any of the emails sent to her. I view this conduct as clear indication of the lack of regard by the Premier firstly towards the President of FIFA and the office he holds, but also reflects how the Government views football and sports in general and the significant role it plays in nation building” President Infantino, a former member of FIFA’s Reform Committee and UEFA General Secretary, was elected President of FIFA in February 2016 at the 66th FIFA Extraordinary Congress, with a mandate to reform

football governance, and increase grassroots programme. “I am extremely investment in football development. pleased and happy to be here.
