PDM AND PNP SLAM THE BRITS

by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief

T

he ruling People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) and the opposition Progressive National Party(PNP) have strongly criticised the British Government for imposing a new piece of legislation that will adversely affect the financial services industry in Turks and Caicos Islands. The Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Bill is designed to introduce public ownership registers in Britain’s overseas territories in an attempt to prevent them from being used to hide “dirty money” and enable anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing measures to be kept up to date. Turks and Caicos Islands, Cayman Island, British Virgin Islands and Bermuda, have introduced private central registers of ownership, which are accessible to UK law enforcement and tax authorities, but the new law calls on them to make those publicly available by December 2020, or have UK ministers impose that requirement upon them via orders in council. Premier Hon. Sharlene Robinson, who wrote British Prime Minister Theresa May to express her concerns, says UK’s “unilateral move is destructive, constitutionally regressive and offensive and disappointing”. In a media statement, she said: “We were disappointed to listen to and hear the Debate and eventual outcome of the House of Commons’ vote on the Anti-Money Laundering Bill which took place on Tuesday of this week endorsing the imposition of Public Registers in the Overseas Territories. The Turks and Caicos Islands has a democratically elected Government who is charged with making decisions in its people’s best interest and as such we see this as a flagrant disregard for our Constitution and its people.” Continued on page 2

Prince’s mansion in Turks and Caicos Islands to be auctioned by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief Prince’s five-acre mansion in Turtle Tail, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands, with an estimated value of $45million, is being sold in a worldwide auction in July 2018. This was confirmed by Todd Wohl, whose firm Premiere Estates auction company, purchased local advertisements exclusively in the Turks and Caicos SUN to announce the auction. Comerica Bank & Trust, in the USA, is representing Prince’s estate, with assistance from local real estate agent Bernadette Hunt and top local lawfirm Misick & Stanbrook. This stunning 5.7 acre compound boasts 10,000 square feet, including 6 bedrooms, 6 full and 1 half bathrooms, panoramic ocean views, a tennis court, two private beaches and

a 200-foot personal dock. Prince also put his characteristic unique touch on the property by creating a purple driveway welcoming guests to the estate. In a press statement to The SUN, Wohl is founder of Premiere Estates Auction Company, an International global accelerated marketing company known for luxury estates across the world, said: “How do you value a masterpiece like the Mona Lisa,’’ Wohl said. “The value is ultimately determined by the market— with a unique property like Prince’s Turks and Caicos estate, we anticipate significant interest and multiple bidders.” He said Prince’s estate is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a music lover to own a piece of music history, a real estate investor, or someone seeking a one of a kind tranquil piece of Caribbean paradise.

Bernadette Hunt, one of the leading real estate agents in Turks and Caicos Islands, told The SUN the property is”one of a kind”, given that it is elevated oceanfront with two private beaches and a 200 dock space in a private marina. She said: “Prince, as I am sure you are aware, when he visited the islands stayed at Amanyara because of the privacy the resort provided him. He purchased this villa in 2011 and later purchased the two adjacent sites having over $13m into the property. Some of the changes to the property were the painting of the driveway purple and the cladding of the theater in purple velvet. The design of the home and pool area offers owners maximum privacy from the ocean and the adjoining property.” Continued on page 2
