SERIOUS CONCERNS

ABOUT PRC

by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief

T

he Permanent Residence Certificate (PRC) scheme in the Turks and Caicos Islands has been described as “high risk”, by the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) In a just-released report, the OECD listed Turks and Caicos Islands among 21 countries worldwide whose “golden passport” schemes threaten international efforts to combat tax evasion. While the exact number of persons who have PRC was not available up to press time, sources said it is fair to say that “a few hundred persons” would have been granted PRC in TCI over the years. Up to the time of writing this report, efforts to source an official response from the Turks and Caicos Islands Government were unsuccessful. Meantime, the categories of PRC in TCI which are of great concern to the OECD, are: Permanent Residence Certificate via Undertaking and Investment in a Home; Permanent Residence Certificate via Undertaking and Investment in a Business; Permanent Residence Certificate via Investment in a Designated Public Sector Project; and Permanent Residence Certificate via Investment in a Home or Business. In addition to the TCI, other Caribbean countries that are listed by the OECD are: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, The Bahamas, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Lucia, and St. Kitts and Nevis, which has sold 16,000 passports since relaunching its programme in 2006.

(See page 24 & 25 for more photographs By Todeline Defralien The annual In The Pink cancer fundraiser, which was held on Saturday October 13th at The Palms Turks and Caicos, raised around $60,000 for the National Cancer Society. Karen Whitt, Vice President of Sales and Marketing of The Hartling Group Turks and Caicos, and committee chairman of the event since its inception, described this year’s event as the biggest in history. In an interview with The SUN, she said, “Our vision of an inspirational, motivating and rewarding Pink Party that celebrates the best of our community came to life on Saturday at The Palms. A record crowd, The Palms played host to a multi-faceted and energy packed evening of shopping, dining, dancing,

Pink Poker, musical and artistic talent. A very special thank you to our amazing entertainers Prime DJ’s, V6 Band, and Val Kalliecharan; and artists Tawana Kennedy, Aysha Stephen and Christine Morden who also helped create lasting Pink memories.” Whitt added that the event could not have happened without the contributions and the hard work of their committee, sponsors and volunteers. “We are incredibly proud of the highly dedicated and coordinated group of community and corporate partners who worked together to make In the Pink an event we can all take pride in,” she said. We built upon the tremendous legacy of the past nine years to host an incredible event attended by several hundred persons. Beautiful people came together to celebrate our commitment

to the National Cancer Society, and work ahead as we continue to raise funds for those persons afflicted by this terrible disease.” Whitt also revealed that in the coming weeks they will be celebrating with their sponsors at a thank-you event, where organisers will announce the final amount raised through the In the Pink Party. The event played host to a mega-shopping frenzy, a PINK Poker Tournament sponsored by Casablanca Casino and a lavish afterparty where PRIME DJs rocked The Palms Courtyard well into the night, included a silent auction and raffle giveaways. The In the PINK committee, local cancer survivors, their loved ones, families, friends and a host of other caring volunteers have come together to present the annual event since 2009.
