BEACHES DEMANDS ‘MILLIONS’ IN OVERPAID TAXES FROM TCIG by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief

B

eaches Resort & Spa said the Turks and Caicos Islands Government owes the hotel “millions of dollars” in overpaid taxes, contrary to widespread reports which wrongly stated that the Gordon “Butch” Stewart will be closing because it owed back taxes. The hotel made the shocking revelation in a clarification statement which followed national controversy when the hotel announced that it will be closed from September 3rd to October15th in 2019 and from September 7th to October 22, 2020, and then for an indefinite period from January 2021. On Friday, January 25th, 2019, when Beaches broke the news about the pending closures, it stated that the shutdowns “are the result of several critical and long-standing issues which have impacted our operations over the past several years”. Three days later, on Monday, January 28th, Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson issued a press release saying Beaches had informed her about the pending closures in a hand deliver letter “some weeks ago”, but she did not state that Government had owed the hotel for overpaid taxes. Saying that she will be fully transparent on this issue, the Premier

said her ministry has been addressing a long outstanding issue with Beaches and her Government is “confident that with the facts in full view, we can bring an end to a critical outstanding matter that has seen its basis in an arrangement in place since the resort’s operation started in the 1990s and existed throughout every Government in the TCI since then”. “Just to be clear, it has not been

a matter of Beaches avoiding taxes or of the former governments or ministers of finances before me (3 actually currently sit in the current House of Assembly: the Leader of the Opposition, the Deputy Speaker and the Government’s Appointed Member) intentionally leaving this matter unaddressed. The current matter followed an event/action that occurred in 2017,”the Premier stated.

After the Premier made her statement, Beaches issues a clarification stating that “Beaches Resorts owes no outstanding taxes to the government of the TCI”, adding that for the past 23 years in which it has operated in the Turks and Caicos Islands, the hotel “punctually and accurately paid taxes according to law”. continued on page 2

HALLMARK’S COMPASS CARD SERVICE TO BE RESTORED Hallmark Trust Limited (Hallmark) has announced the resumption of its prepaid Compass card service for Turks and Caicos Islands’ residents. “We are working on restoring the service, so that Turks and Caicos Islands’ residents can enjoy access to an international payment network access that the Compass card enables”, said Joseph P. Connolly, Administrator of Hallmark Trust Ltd. He said Hallmark will

conduct a personal information update of all cardholders. In order to start the update process, Hallmark requests that ALL cardholders attend at Hallmark office on Leeward Highway, Providenciales. After Hallmark completes this update and review, the Compass card can be reactivated within three to five working days, and the user can start charging and topping up at the Hallmark Office, Connolly said. He added that cardholders will need to bring documents to prove

identity, address and source of funds. The complete list of required personal information and accompanying form can be downloaded from the Compass card website (http://www. hallmarkcompass.com/) or is also available at the Hallmark office. Connolly noted that there is no deadline to present the documents to Hallmark’s office, but he stressed that it is important to highlight that the cards will not be reactivated until the personal information has been received by Hallmark.
