HEALTH CARE RUSH Several medical companies keen on setting up in TCI

By Todeline Defralien

S

everal international health care providers are lining up to provide a wide range of world-class medical services to the Turks and Caicos Islands, in a move that could position this country as the health care capital of the Caribbean, while at the same time significantly reducing the amount of money spent on overseas medical referrals. Minister of Health Hon. Edwin Astwood revealed that Government has several offers on the table, adding that high-powered lawyers have been combing through the contract with InterHealth Canada, operators of the two hospitals in Grand Turk and Providenciales, to ensure there are no obstacles to new players entering the market. “We have a number of offers and persons are interested,” Astwood told The SUN in an exclusive interview. “It is just dealing with all of the legal issues and getting them setup is what’s preventing it. I know that we have lawyers that are dedicated to look at this contract now, and the Government has employed the services of a law firm to look at this contract and see what we can do and how we can do it. I am confident that we can move forward so that we can get these legal issues behind us. That is the only road block, because we have a number of companies to provide a number of different services who are knocking at our doors...to setup their facilities here... and persons who already have access to their patients to come in.”

US State Department issues ‘Level 2’ Travel Advisory for TCI T he crime situation in the Turks and Caicos Islands has caused the US State Department to issue a “level 2” travel advisory for the destination. The advisory which was posted on the State Department’s website on February 25th, 2019, stated: “Exercise increased caution in the Turks and Caicos Islands due to crime”. persons should exercise normal procedures, while level 2 is to exercise increased caution. Level 3 is to reconsider travel and level 4 means do not travel. The notice advised persons who decide to travel to the Turks and Caicos Islands to avoid walking alone and at night; do not answer your door at your hotel/ residence unless you know who it is; do not physically resist any robbery attempt; enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive Alerts and make it easier to locate

Ralph Higgs, stated, “All of our islands are at the disposal of our guests, and I would like to encourage them to visit every one and to be vigilant while they enjoy our many natural attribute.” In a press statement, the tourism ministry noted that the advisory “is not the result of any recent increase in

criminal activities in our Islands, but instead is issued out of an abundance of caution, and forms part of the US Consulate’s statutory duties to the American traveling public”. It also stated that recent statistics on crime from the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, shows a double-digit decrease in crime here in the islands. “The Turks and Caicos Islands remains the safest destination in the region, if not in the world,” the press release added.
