2,000 STATELESS CHILDREN IN TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief

T

here are about 2,000 stateless or undocumented children in the Turks and Caicos Islands, many of whom are “vulnerable to commercial sexual exploitation as a result of human trafficking”, according to two international reports. Investigations by The SUN revealed that a report from the United States of America’s Department of Labor (Findings on the Worst Forms of Child Labor), and a study (Situation analysis of children in the Turks and Caicos Islands) done by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), have expressed serious concern about the conditions of these children and the implications for their human rights. The US Labour Department report which was done in 2013, said the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) had, at that time, made no advancement in efforts to prevent the worst forms of child labor. “Limited evidence suggests that the Islands’ 2,000 undocumented children are vulnerable to commercial sexual exploitation as a result of human trafficking. The Government lacks a complete legal framework to prevent child labor, including its worst forms,” said the report.

Beaches had ‘no alternative’ TCI mourns death of popular police officer Mauquency Carter but to sue TCIG B T eaches Resort and Spa said it is “most unfortunate” that we had to sue the Turks and Caicos Islands Government, adding that because of “injustice” over taxes it “had no alternative”. The Gordon “Butch” Stewartowned hotel is suing government for $13.8million, claiming that because government breached a March 2014 Development Agreement, the hotel is seeking “a refund of monies paid in error” to the Crown. Beaches is asking the court to issue an order for “immediate payment” of “not less than” US $13,861,568 currently owed to it by government,

together with orders for “any further payments of sum found subsequently to be due” to the hotel. In a March 14th, 2019 press release, Beaches said it exercised its constitutional right to challenge certain claims by TCIG setting out taxes and penalties said to be owing by various establishments under the Hotel, Restaurants and Tourism (Taxation) Ordinance, including Beaches. “In January 2019 we filed suit against the Government in relation to these matters and also claiming certain tax refunds,” the press release said. continued on page 2
