$6MILLION MEDICAL BILL

ust over $6million was spent on medical treatment abroad for residents of the Turks and Caicos Islands between July 1st, 2018 and December 1st, 2018.

This amount, which was revealed by Minister of Health, Hon. Edwin Astwood, works out to be an average of just over $1million per month.

Astwood noted that subsistence was just over half-million dollars, while $1.7million was spent on travel arrangements.

The Minister announced the figures following questions asked by Hon. Akierra Missick, Leeward & Long Bay MP during a House of Assembly meeting on Monday March 25th.

Missick asked how many persons were how many persons were referred for treatment overseas pursuing to the treatment abroad program July 1st 2018- December 1st, 2018. Where were they referred, what were the cost of these referrals specific to the countries they were referred to and what is the expenditure of their treatment abroad program from July 1st, 2018 – December 1st, 2018.

The Minister revealed that from the period of January –March 6th there were a total of 588 persons referred to the treatment abroad program.

Annual Golf & Fishing Tournament donates $20,000 cheques to local charities

O

rganizers of the Annual Wine Cellar Golf & Fishing Tournament are proud to announce that this year’s proceeds from the 9th annual event were presented to two youth-oriented charitable organizations; the Edward Gartland Youth Centre and Provo Sailing Academy.

During a cheque Presentation Ceremony on Wednesday April 3rd, the two charities received $20,000 each to go towards making a difference in TCI.

The Edward Gartland Youth Centre is a

non-profit organization providing a centre for the youth of Providenciales with activities range from tutoring, to sports and recreation, arts and craft and so much more. The Provo Sailing Academy’s dedicated staff has taught many a young local the fine art of sailing.

This brings the total donated by the Wine Cellar Golf & Fishing Tournament (WCGFT) Committee to $281,000.

Organizers stated that they look forward to giving even more next year.

Premier Hon. Sharlene Robinson made a mid-term Cabinet reshuffle on Thursday, April 4th, 2019, saying that the new portfolio assignments and the reassignments of departments are “sure to assist us in delivering on our promises and list of priority flagship projects”.

The Premier said she will continue to hold the Ministry of Finance and the Premier’s Office will be renamed Office of the Premier, Local Government and Community Affairs.

SONIA FULFORD RE-ELECTED TO THE CONCACAF COUNCIL

Sonia Fulford, president of the Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA) was re-elected to Council of Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) during its 34th Ordinary Congress which was held on March 28, 2019, at The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Congress is an annual meeting of all 41 Member countries of Concacaf. It is presided over by Concacaf President and FIFA Vice President, Victor Montagliani and deals with the various matters being currently dealt with by the Confederation, a review of past year events and finances amongst other pertinent matters.

A critical agenda item is the

Astwood stated that in July, 134 persons were referred at a cost of $1.6million, in August there were 117 persons referred at a cost of $1.5millon; in September 95 persons were referred and that cost was $1.6million; in October 156 persons were referred at a cost of $1.5million and in November, 86 persons were referred costing $494,153.78.

The places where persons were referred were to The Bahamas, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Cayman Islands, Haiti, United States and the United Kingdom.

Astwood also gave a further breakdown of how much persons were referred at each of those places in each month.

Sonia Fulford re-elected to the Concacaf Council continued from page 1 TCIFA President Sonia Fulford is the incumbent in the Concacaf Female Member position and was challenged by Jeaninne Wong-Loi-Sing of Bonaire.

Ms. Fulford was co-opted to the Concacaf Council in 2013 and subsequently elected by Congress in 2015 as the first female to hold a position (with voting rights) on the Concacaf Council. At the recent election, the Delegates showed tremendous faith in her stewardship by re-electing Ms. Fulford with a resounding majority of 34

to 7 votes.

In retaining her seat as Female Member of the Concacaf Council, Ms. Fulford shares the collective responsibility of crafting the various statutes, regulations, and resolutions that guides all the countries in the 3 geographical areas, North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. In this, Sonia Fulford has maintained her platform to bring a path to parity for women in the male-dominated sport of football. This drive to change involved

defying gender stereotypes, and building a gender-balanced and inclusive presence, so that women are able to fulfill their full potential both in sports and society.

In commenting on her reelection, Ms. Fulford said: “Firstly I would like to thank the Members for their support and confidence in me by their electing me to another term on the Concacaf Council. I am humbled by the overwhelming support and plan to use this mandate to continue my role in the development of football. Though

14 bodies recovered from capsized Haitian sloop

At least 14 Haitians are dead after a small boat smuggling migrants to the Turks and Caicos capsized off West Caicos on Sunday, March 31st, 2019.

The tragedy prompted the local Haitian Consulate to issue a statement discouraging Haitians from taking the dangerous journey from Haiti to the Turks and Caicos with smugglers.

“Once again the Haitian community of the TCI is in mourning due to the tragic loss of life at sea of our countrymen,” the Consulate said in a press release. “It is a very sad and painful situation for us and on behalf of the Haitian Consulate of the TCI;

we offer our condolences to the families of those that are directly affected by this tragic incident.”

The release added: “In this time, we wish to use this opportunity to appeal to our young compatriots and to ask them to stop this activity for the risk is too great and the loss is even greater; I am appealing to those who are thinking of risking their lives at sea and those who are helping people to take such a dangerous crossing in these makeshift boats. You risk your life and if you live, you do not have any chances to reach the shores of the TCI as they will catch you and send them back home.”

The Consulate thanked the local authorities for their massive effort to rescue the

survivors.

“We wish to also inform the public that we are working closely with the Government in order to identify and repatriate the bodies to Haiti.”

The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force Marine Branch crews were immediately dispatched to the vessel that capsized after 8:00 a.m.

In a press release on Sunday March 31st, Acting Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting said, “We have utilized all of our marine components, with the support of other rescue services. The Search and rescue operation is ongoing. We cannot tell when it will end as it will be determined by the number of recoveries we make Rescued immigrants on the rescue boat over the next day or so.”

Government launches its home owner’s policy

The1st of April 2019 marked the effective date for the coming into force of the Home Owner’s Policy, recently approved by the Turks and Caicos Islands Government.

The Turks and Caicos Government (TCIG) is keen on promoting home ownership and providing incentives to help those struggling to get on the property ladder or to protect the savings and equity that existing homeowners have painstakingly placed in their homes.

To progress this initiative, Turks and Caicos Islands Government has initiated its Homeowner’s Policy that will provide a duty waiver program, applicable to all Turks and Caicos Islands citizens who are homeowners or

in the process of becoming a first time homeowner.

The Hon Premier Cartwright Robinson commented stating; “This Program will give Turks and Caicos Islanders a better opportunity to maintain or increase the equity in their homes as existing home owners of 10 years or more, or to enter the housing market for the first time with some incentives. These incentives will include either a reduction of $20,000 in stamp duty or an import duty waiver of up to $20,000 on building materials/ appliances/furniture and fixtures. I am excited the interest already expressed and I know that many will benefit under this Program. Homeownership is an empowerment tool and we are happy

to deliver on this important imitative”

To ensure that the Public has all the necessary information required to benefit under this policy, a copy of the approved policy is attached to this release for ease of reference. A copy of the policy can also be downloaded from the Turks and Caicos Islands Government website at www.gov.tc, and the Customs Department website at www.customs.gov.tc.

Coal burning problem continues

Minister of Tourism, Hon. Ralph Higgs has weighed in on the nagging problem of Coal burning.

During a session in the House of Assembly on March 29th, 2019, Higgs appealed to persons who know anyone who is engaging in this activity to report it to relevant authorities.

“Another situation that is quite alarming and quite concerning and we would like the public assistance where possible on this, is that in Providenciales a number of persons continue to burn coal kill. It is illegal, the cutting down of shrubs and trees and burning of coal anywhere in the Turks and Caicos Islands and I want to urge the people of Providenciales wherever they see or become aware of persons engaging in such activities to report it without delay to the DERC, Immigration Department , Police or any relevant authority,” Higgs said.

Government has assembled a taskforce spans many departments, including Immigration and the police, to tackle the problem of coal-burning in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Some Providenciales residents have been complaining about the individuals cutting down trees to burn coal near their communities, and said

that the smoke, which is unsightly, is also causing health problems for them.

In a recent article in The SUN, Dr. Michael Dillon, Deputy Attorney General, said that persons who clear land in Turks and Caicos Islands to make coal can face fines as high as $50,000 and/or be sentenced to up to 12 months in jail.

He noted that he activity of coal manufacturing — the chopping and burning of trees — offends 3 major Ordinances; the Physical Planning Ordinance, the Crown Land Ordinance and the National Parks Ordinance (and the regulations made under it).

National Parks Regulations made under the National Parks Ordinance prohibits coal manufacturing activities as a criminal offence in a national park, a nature reserve or a sanctuary. In these areas, the taking or destruction of any animal or plant by any method on land or at sea is strictly prohibited as is the making of fires other than a portable stove or grill.

With respect to the Physical Planning Ordinance, it is an offence to “clear” land without authorization from the Director of Planning.

“Prohibited specified conduct 100A: (1) A person shall not (a) clear a site unless prior authorization is given by the Director. (2) In this section — “clear a site” means to remove trees,

Alonzo Malcolm resigns as Director of Road Safety

Alonzo Malcolm has resigned from the post of Director of Road Safety to take up a more lucrative post in the private sector as director of developments for projects in North Caicos.

“After 30-plus years in the public service I felt the time has come for me to move on to greener pastures where I can maximize my skills and continue contributing to the development of my beloved Turks and Caicos Islands,” Malcolm told The SUN.

“The country in general and North Caicos in particular is continuing experience a tremendous development boom and I envisage that there will be significant opportunities for growth.

I’m really excited about this move,” he added.

Malcolm first joined the public service in 1988 as a police officer before moving to the Immigration Department where he was Director of Immigration.

He was also Acting Director of Housing and Acting Director of Estates Management.

Minister of Tourism, Hon. Ralph Higgs stumps, brush, stone or topsoil by heavy equipment or hand. (3) A person who contravenes subsection (1) commits an offence and shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine of $10,000,” the Deputy Attorney General noted.

Additionally, there are provisions of the Crown land Ordinance that prohibit action that degrades crown land or “clears” it.

“(1) The Crown Land Unit must take action, in accordance with

this Ordinance and any other relevant powers, to (a) prevent squatting on Crown land or any unauthorised action that denudes or degrades Crown land; and (b) prevent harmful activity on or against Crown land.

“(2) The Crown Land Unit has overall responsibility for monitoring the disposal and subsequent use of Crown land and protecting it from harmful activity.

“(3) All persons must treat Crown land with respect and refer any potentially harmful activity on Crown land to the Crown Land Unit for action.

“(4) For the purpose of this section, “harmful activity” includes, but is not limited to (a) illegal dumping of waste, breaches of planning regulations and unlawful encroachment on land,” the Deputy Attorney General noted.

A person who commits an offence on Crown Land and is liable on summary conviction to a fine of $10,000 or imprisonment for 6 months and on conviction on indictment to a fine of $50,000 or imprisonment for 5 years, or both.

It should also be noted that the activity of coal manufacturing might breach the tort of nuisance which if done on private land might be actionable by any person affected by the nuisance, the Deputy Attorney General said.

Blocked beach access at Cherokee Road now cleared The Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) would like to inform the public that following an incident at the Cherokee Road Public Beach Access (Providenciales) where the public access had been illegally blocked – this issue has now been corrected and public access has been renewed.

Following multiple reports made directly to the DECR and on social media, on Monday morning (March 25th) a joint Government investigation was conducted by Officers from the Department

of Survey & Mapping, Planning Department and DECR. Officers confirmed that the access was on Crown Land and that an obstruction of quarry had been illegally developed.

The Government is continuing to follow leads into the incident, but the obstruction has now been cleared and public access to Babaloa Beach can continue.

Hon. Ralph Higgs stated: “We are proud of our world renowned beaches here in the Turks and Caicos and the Government is committed to ensuring that the public can continue

to enjoy our beautiful by nature shores.

The beaches are for responsible public use and any obstruction of a public beach access will not be tolerated.

Offenders will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”

The DECR urges any persons obstructing public beach access to cease such actions forthwith.

TCI has safer public transportation, says Transportation Minister

In an effort to remove illegal jitneys on the roads in Turks and Caicos Islands, the Ministry of Transportation recently introduced safer and reliable transportations throughout the islands.

Recently the first Community Cab was introduced in Providenciales and the Minister of Home Affairs, Transportation & Communication Hon. Mr. Vaden Delroy Williams is encouraging more locals to take on the opportunity.

“We have just introduced community Cabs and mini bus services as a means of public transportation and more safer and reliable transportation.

Just over the weekend Mr. Speaker the first mini cab was introduced in Providenciales and Mr. Speaker I would like to take this opportunity here again to encourage all of our local entrepreneurs to get involved,” Williams said during a session in the House of Assembly on March 25th, 2019.

Williams expressed his disappointment in the number of persons who are applying for these licenses.

He added: “This is somewhat disappointing that something that our people have been asking for opportunities for them to advance

Walkers and runners of Holy Family Academy came together for their first ever cancer walk to help raise funds for the National Cancer Society in Turks and Caicos Islands.

The walk took place from the schools compound to Our Lady of Divine Providence, Roman Catholic Church in Providenciales on Saturday March 23rd.

Chané van Schoor, student of Holy Family Academy who chose this initiative as her

community project said it was a great success.

T-Shirt were also on sale for $20 each to go towards the fundraising efforts.

She told The SUN, “My project is a community service project, which is part of the requirements for the 11th graders of Holy Family Academy. We got to choose what we wanted to do and I chose to raise awareness for children with cancer. Today we are doing a walkathon to raise funds as we sold these shirts for $20.00 each and all of the funds

are going to the National Cancer Society here in Turks and Caicos.”

Schoor added that she chose the Cancer Society because she wanted to do something more local which will benefit the Turks and Caicos.

“I am overwhelmed with the support. I am really happy to have had everyone support and despite the rain it went well.”

With the support of over thirty individuals, Schoor also stated that the school is hoping to host more of these walks in the future.

Man charged in Gold Finger robbery

Officers of the Criminal Investigations Department of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force have charged a 49-year-old man for the March 21st, 2019 robbery of the Goldfinger Jewelry and Repair Shop.

The store was robbed of a variety of jewelry, and the customer and staffer present were robbed of personal items and cash.

Following investigations and the recovery of the getaway vehicle in the area of Kew Town, the 49-year-old man was arrested on the said day and charged on March 28th, 2019 with two counts of Robbery.

He is currently in police custody.

As the Police continues their investigations into this matter, they are appealing to members of

Do-it-Center donates cultural ‘Hut’ to TCI’s National Trust

Building Materials Limited Doit-Center recently handed over a very cultural ‘hut’ to the Turks and Caicos National Trust.

This hut intends to be the gift shop and administrative office at the Cheshire Hall Plantation in Providenciales, after the previous location was severely battered by 2017 hurricanes.

The 12ft by 12ft hut with green doors, white wash finish, double windows, and thatched roof just like in the old days, was constructed by the Doit-Center and designed by purchasing manager and architect, Kier Adams.

Executive Director of the National Trust, Ethlyn Gibbs-Williams thanked the Do-It-Center for its generous donation.

“I am so pleased that this day has arrived where Building Materials has decided to hand over the hut as promised to the National Trust and even though it is a small hut, it will play a very significant role in our program in the Cheshire Hall historic site. This actually came about after we suffered so immensely from the 2017 hurricanes Irma and Maria and we were trying to see how we can get our program back after the storms. This is a celebration for the National Trust family.”

TCI sends five for Sol Rally Barbados

The Turks & Caicos Motoring Club will field its biggest team yet in Sol Rally Barbados 2019, the 30th running of the Barbados Rally Club’s (BRC) premier event.

The pioneer member of the group, Paul Horton, first competed in 2010, followed

by Stan Hartling two years later, then Pierre Beswick in 2017; after Hartling’s younger son Ben took part last year, his brother Sam is entered for Sol RB19, bringing the total to five cars, competing across four different classes.

Sol RB19 will run from Friday, May 31 to Sunday, June 2, with The Rally Show on the previous Saturday (May 25) followed

by Flow King of the Hill at its new Stewarts Hill location on the Sunday; in three decades, it has evolved from small beginnings as the All-Stage Rally of 1990 into the Caribbean’s biggest annual motor sport International and a key National Event on the island’s sportstourism calendar.

The Turks & Caicos - an archipelago of more than 100 islands, just nine of which are inhabited - are roughly 1,000 miles to the north-west of Barbados, directly north of the Dominican Republic. Although there are currently no motor sport facilities, the Motoring Club has been working towards creating opportunities for islanders to enjoy grass roots motor sport.

As Horton makes his 10th consecutive appearance, he returns to the island for his third full season in the Java Island/Sky Motorsports/H Racing/Arbikie Highland Estate Citroen DS 3 R3 MAX, in which he has finished second at year end in the BRC Modified 2 Class Championship for the past two years; he also won the class in Sol RB17 on the car’s debut in the event, finishing 18th overall. He looked set for a repeat last year, 20th and leading M2 into the final stage of Saturday, but engine failure ended his weekend.

Twice a class-winner in Targa Newfoundland in North America – in a Honda Civic in 2008, then a Ford Escort MkI the following year – it took Horton rather longer to find success in Barbados, three retirements (Civic 2, Escort 1) before finishing

27th overall and second in M7 in the Escort in 2013. Horton has already seen action in Barbados this year, reunited with his former co-driver Kris Yearwood, with two top six finishes in the Motoring Club of Barbados Inc (MCBI) Spring Blaze double-header sprint last month.

Canadian-born Hartling, whose island debut in 2012 came at the wheel of a Lotus Exige, endured a similarly challenging time before he claimed his first overall finish in 2017, 30th and fifth in SuperModified 3 in his Bambarra Rum/Automotive Art BMW M3. Although clutch failure early in Sol RB18 resulted in another non-finish, he went on to place fourth in the Sunday Cup, then narrowly lose out on third place in SM3 at year-end – Andrew Jones won the tie-break, based on best overall finish – despite claiming the class win in the season-ending Winter Rally in October.

Hartling also has a new co-driver, in Jeremy Croney, who comes from a Barbados family steeped in motor sport.

Like Horton, Hartling’s previous record had included in the Targa Newfoundland, when his co-driver was Jamaican-born Beswick – they twice finished in the top 10 together - who became the third member of the Turks & Caicos driving force two years ago in the Grace Bay Car Rentals/ Hartling Luxury Resorts/Sky Motorsports/

Ben Hartling has an identical Citroen, backed by The Hartling Group, with Barbadian Dwayne Forde as his co-driver, a member of the Turks & Caicos ‘family’ in recent years as co-driver to Horton; his experience will be valuable for the 23-yearold, who finished third in M1 at year-end, with only four events contested. His 25-yearold brother Sam is entered in a BMW 318ti Compact in Clubman 2, with no co-driver as yet confirmed. Both have competed in North America with father Stan in the Chump Car Series; while the usual regulations dealing with important issues such as safety follow main-line motor sport, the approach to cars and competition is rather more different, as Stan has explained in the past: “We built a real special, a police pursuit car cut down, caged and then we put on a Ford F150 truck body . . . backwards! It drives the guys on the track nuts!” They have raced at some iconic venues, including Road Atlanta, Daytona and

Laguna Seca.

Three weeks until on-line entries close With just over three weeks to go before entries close for Sol Rally Barbados 2019 on Friday, April 26, more than 70 have been received on-line at the recently revamped official web site, rallybarbados.net.

Approaching 50 of those already appear in the on-line list, which is updated regularly as local entries are received, also when overseas crews have confirmed their plans and their participation has been announced. There are 10 so far listed in the four-wheel-drive classes, with around double that number still to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Once again, there is a healthy balance between local crews, which currently number a little under half of the entries received, and overseas visitors. There are more than 20 new overseas participants on the list, many putting the final touches to their plans before their cars are due to ship across the Atlantic from Dover in early May aboard the Geest Line freighter Baltic Klipper.

They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator— who is forever praised. Amen. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. (Romans 1:25-27) Introduction

I believe we need to set standards in the way we live in this World and those standards should be based on the sound doctrine from the Word of God.

If countries continue to change their laws to satisfy the emotions of human beings, the countries are setting a wrong precedence. Soon and very soon, if this trend continues, people will want laws to be passed so that they can get married to their animals or have sexual relations with underage children.

This article is in reference to the Chief Justice ruling in the Cayman Islands that legalizes same sex marriage.

What does the Bible say about same about same sex marriage?

The Bible clearly indicates that marriage is between a man and woman from the time Adam and Eve were created and therefore marriage should not be honoured between two persons of the same sex.

Yes there will be persons who are attracted to the same sex but the Bible specifically instructs us that we should not have sexual relations with the same

Perhaps this sin has been passed from generation to generation and hence some people feel the way they feel.

What does Universal Declaration of Human Rights say about same marriage?

It was in 1948 that the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In article 16 of this declaration, it states that “men and women of full age, without any limitation due to race, nationality, or religion have the right to marry and found a family. However, this article does not say anything about same sex. Article 1 says that all humans are born equal.

Article 2 says that everyone is entitled to all rights and freedom. Article

Therefore, people are using these articles as a basis for same sex marriage.

Conclusion and Recommendation

If individuals can take this matter to court and win, then we need to go on our knees and pray that this ruling will not take place in TCI. We must stand our ground and even if it means going to court to ensure that the preamble in our constitution (marriage is between a man and woman) remains and cannot be overridden.

Fortis TCI hosts another successful spring fun walk & run F

ortisTCI held its 11th Annual Spring Fun Walk & Run on Saturday, March 30, in Providenciales.

The event brought out community members of all ages to ring in spring healthily.

Over 400 participants were registered to walk, run, and cycle, showing positive community support despite the many happenings on the day of the event, and attendees were again provided with enjoyable, healthy breakfast options free of charge.

Congratulations were expressed to all the participants and winners of the 2019 FortisTCI Spring Fun Walk & Run.

At this year’s event, 1st place male 10k – Ernstly Regis, 1st place female 10k – Zoe Butler, 1st place kid (13 or under) 10k – Khuisttin Penn, 1st place cyclist – Tyrone Bishop, 1st place FTCI male 10k – Nore Verdieu and 1st place FTCI female 10k – Monette Collymore

2019 Economic Empowerment Conference exceeded expectations T

he 2019 Economic Empowerment Conference certainly exceeded expectations and according to attendees was “insightful, informative and inspirational.

The event which took place at the Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort and Spa in Providenciales on March 29th and 30th 2019 was hosted under the theme “Positioned to Prosper”.

The conference brought together local business persons, students, experts and the ordinary man in a day-and-a-half conference the likes of which the

TCI has never before seen.

Cardi B performs at the Coachella Music & Arts Festival at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, Calif

Cardi B and Travis Scott are heading to the City of Brotherly Love to headline Jay-Z’s annual Made in America festival.

Live Nation and Roc Nation announced Tuesday that the festival will return to Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin Parkway on Aug. 31-Sept. 1 for Labor Day weekend.

Police arrest man they say killed rapper Nipsey Hussle

After a nearly 48-hour manhunt, police arrested the suspect they say gunned down Nipsey Hussle in front of the popular rapper’s South Los Angeles clothing store.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies detained Eric Holder, 29, on Tuesday afternoon in the city of Bellflower, two days after the shooting and 20 miles away from the crime scene. LAPD detectives quickly arrived to verify that he was the suspect they’d sought.

The focus now shifts from the streets to the courtroom.

Holder is likely to be charged with killing Hussle and to make his first appearance in front of a judge in the next two days.

Authorities announced Holder as a suspect Monday night, publicizing his face and name and publicly urging him to turn himself in. Police said a tip from a citizen led them to Holder.

Hussle and Holder knew each other, and the two had some kind of personal dispute in the hours before the rapper was killed, police Chief Michel Moore said at a news conference earlier Tuesday.

The two men had several interactions on Sunday, and Holder returned to the store with a handgun and opened fire on Hussle and two other men, who survived the shooting, police said.

The chief did not reveal how the two men were acquainted or offer any details about their dispute, but he emphasized it was a personal matter between Hussle and Holder. Hussle acknowledged that he was involved with a gang when he was younger, and police said Holder is a gang member, but the chief said gang rivalries played no role in the shooting.

After shooting Hussle and the two other men, Holder fled in a waiting car driven by a woman, Moore said.

Rapper Nipsey Hussle

The police chief and the president of the city’s Police Commission, Steve Soboroff, had been scheduled to meet with Hussle on Monday to discuss the relationship between the police force and the inner city.

At Tuesday’s news conference an emotional Soboroff read from the email Hussle sent asking for the meeting.

“Our goal is to work with the department to help improve communication, relationships and work towards changing the culture and dialogue between LAPD and your city,” Hussle said in the email.

Severe obesity raises particular travel health issues

International travelers who are obese may face difficulties with flights, hotel access and certain leisure activities, say researchers who suggest the travel industry and travel health specialists should address these issues.

Based on interviews with severely obese men and women about their experiences with international travel, the small study found that airport facilities and procedures, physical discomfort and embarrassment on flights, and limitations associated with obesity were recurring themes, according to the report in the Journal of Travel Medicine.

“Obesity is a common condition and we know that obese individuals are subject to physical restrictions and weight bias in their everyday lives,” said lead author Dr. Gerard Flaherty of the School of Medicine at the National University of Ireland Galway.

“There is a dearth of research relating to the actual travel experiences of travelers with chronic medical illness, how their underlying conditions impact their travel or how travel affects the management of their pre-existing illness,” he told Reuters Health by email.

Spinal manipulation can help ease low back pain

Spinal manipulation therapy isn’t routinely recommended as the initial treatment for low back pain, but a research review suggests this approach may work as well as interventions that doctors typically prescribe first.

Based on data from 47 previously conducted trials involving a total of 9,211 mostly middle-aged adults, spinal manipulation eased lower back pain as much as exercise, non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAID) and painkillers.

Spinal manipulation also appeared better for improving short-term function.

“At the moment, spinal manipulation is considered a second-line or adjunctive treatment option in international guidelines,” said lead study author Sidney Rubinstein of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam.

“These results would suggest that spinal manipulation is certainly on-par with these other recommended therapies, and can be considered an option,” Rubinstein said by email.

Lower-back pain is one of the leading causes of disability and doctor visits for adults worldwide. It often goes away within a few weeks. But when it persists, lower-back pain might be treated with spinal manipulation, medications like painkillers or muscle relaxers, heat, exercise or physical therapy.

Spinal manipulation is often done by chiropractors but may also be offered by physical therapists or physicians. It can include manually moving joints, massage and exercise. This type of treatment is designed to relieve pressure on joints and curb inflammation and it’s often used for back, neck or shoulder pain as well as for headaches.

For the current study, researchers focused on the gold standard for determining the effectiveness and safety of medical treatments: randomized controlled trials that compare outcomes for patients who are randomly assigned to a specific treatment or to a dummy treatment or no treatment at all.

Spinal manipulation worked better for pain relief than non-recommended interventions like light tissue massage, the current analysis found.

It also worked better than sham manipulation treatments, but the evidence was low-quality, Rubinstein’s team notes in The BMJ.

About half of the studies looked at side effects of spinal manipulation and found little evidence to conclude whether or not this is safer than other approaches. In one study, researchers found one serious adverse event that could potentially have been associated with spinal manipulation.

One limitation of the analysis is that the studies of spinal manipulation were done in different settings, tested different techniques and measured the effectiveness of this intervention in different ways, the study authors note.

“Spinal manipulation may decrease pain from muscle strain, inflammation and spasm in your back muscles and/or impact the way that your body perceives pain through either the brain or the spinal cord,” said Christine Goertz, chief executive officer of the Spine Institute for Quality in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

“The most common side effects resulting from spinal manipulation are mild to moderate joint or muscle pain and/or stiffness,” Goertz, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. “These symptoms generally go away on their own within a day or two.”

Cayman’s marriage ruling could have domino effect in other British Overseas territories, says lawyer

A historic ruling to legalise same-sex marriage in the Cayman Islands could have a domino effect across the British Overseas Territories, according to a leading human rights lawyer.

Jonathan Cooper, QC, who served as an adviser to the legal team that brought the successful court challenge, said the decision should be welcomed.

He believes it will force the U.K. to take more direct action to intervene in other territories, including the British Virgin Islands, Anguilla and Montserrat, which still outlaw same-sex marriage.

Another boy abducted in The Bahamas

A three-week break in a recent string of abductions on New Providence ended this weekend after another young boy was taken in front of his home and dropped off at the city dump, according to police.

Police said shortly before 9 p.m. on Friday, two boys aged eight and 10 were standing in front of their home on Collins Close off Lumumba Lane.

Police reported that a woman driving a silver vehicle stopped and spoke to the boys.

The 10-year-old walked away, according to police, but the woman lured the eight-year-old into her vehicle and then drove away.

Police said a short time later, the eight-year-old was dropped off on Tonique Williams-Darling Highway near the entrance of the city dump, unharmed.

This most recent occurrence makes the seventh alleged abduction in five separate incidents since midFebruary.

Police believe that four of the matters are connected.

Police yesterday said they are seeking a person of interest, said to be the same unnamed suspect who they previously released an artist’s rendering of in an all-points bulletin.

“We have a strong belief that four of those incidents are connected

and that’s based on several things,” Chief Superintendent Solomon Cash told The Guardian yesterday evening.

“We are interviewing witnesses who are giving us similar descriptions of a vehicle that we are still in search of and also, we have witnesses who are giving us similar descriptions and characteristics of the possible suspect. If you were to look at all of the composite sketches that we released previously, I can safely say that the third sketch that we have out to release now is similar to those two that we had released previously.”

On March 7, three young boys, 10-year-old John Laurent, five-yearold Jameson Joisue and a friend, eightyear-old J’dakito Sejour, were reportedly abducted.

Police said two children, later identified as Laurent and Sejour, were walking in Kool Acres when they were picked up by a woman who was the lone occupant of a dark-colored vehicle.

Teen raped first day on job at massage parlour

St Joseph police are investigating a report in which an 18-year-old woman was allegedly raped in St Augustine, Trinidad.

The woman told police the incident took place around midday on Saturday.

That was her first day as a receptionist at a massage parlour in

Santa Margarita, St Augustine.

Only 12 hours earlier, she had been hired after responding to a report she had seen in a newspaper’s classified ads.

The woman told police that while at the parlour, she was working when her manager came and told her he was short-staffed that day and he

wanted her to give a client a massage.

She was given instructions on how to perform her duties on the man’s back and she was sent to a room in the building where she saw a man lying on a bed.

She told police that at the time the man was lying face down on the bed.

As the woman began to massage the man, he allegedly got up and forced her onto the ground where he sexually assaulted her.

The woman raised an alarm and was able to fight off the assailant.

She then fled the scene and notified the police. WPC Collins is continuing enquiries.

Apply for Bahamian status or be deported

Under the government’s proposed new immigration laws, those who were born in The Bahamas after July 9, 1973 to parents who were not Bahamian, and failed to apply to be registered as citizens by their 19th birthday, would lose that right and would have six months after the law takes effect to apply for some form of status or risk being deported.

The government’s Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Bill 2018, now out for public consultation, proposes sweeping changes to the country’s immigration laws in an attempt to fix the long-standing problem of statelessness and the rights of Bahamians to pass on their citizenship.

Currently, Article 7 of The Bahamas constitution states that a person born in The Bahamas after independence, “neither of whose parents is a citizen of The Bahamas shall be entitled, upon making application on his attaining the age of eighteen years or within twelve months thereafter to be registered as a citizen of The Bahamas”.

The constitution is silent on what happens to these individuals before their 18th birthday, or after their 19th birthday.

Article 9 of the constitution

states that a person born outside The Bahamas to a Bahamian mother is not automatically granted citizenship, but has a right to apply from their 18th birthday to their 21st birthday, to be registered as a citizen.

The constitution is also silent on what happens before these people reach age 18 and after they reach age 21.

The new law would also establish that these people lose their constitutional right to be registered after their 21st birthday.

However, the new law establishes a “right of abode”, or a right to live, in The Bahamas for anyone born in The Bahamas to foreign parents while they are a minor – before they reach age 18.

It also establishes a right to live in The Bahamas for anyone born outside The Bahamas to a Bahamian mother, while that person is still a minor.

These minors would be able to apply for a resident belonger’s permit which could be approved by the immigration director, “provided that such an applicant is in the custody and care of a parent or guardian who has the right of abode in The Bahamas”.

For these people, the right of abode would grant them the right to

legally work in The Bahamas, and reside in The Bahamas, up to the time they apply to be registered as citizens and while that application is being processed and/or appealed.

For those whose constitutionally mandated time to apply to be registered has expired, they would have six months from the passage of the new law to apply for some form of status, such as naturalization, permanent residency, etc., and would have the right of abode pending the determination and/or appeal.

Those who do not apply risk being imprisoned and deported.

“The continued residence in The Bahamas of any person who… fails to apply for other legal status under this act or who is refused such status, and has not appealed, or is not successful in his appeal, shall be unlawful and his right of abode shall cease at the expiration of six months following the commencement of this act…,” the draft bill states.

“Any such person who thereafter enters and remains in The Bahamas, or is thereafter found in The Bahamas commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to the penalty specified in section 72(1)(h) and may be liable to deportation.”

The penalty specified is a prison sentence of up to two years. The bill also broadens the reasons for refusal of citizenship.

The Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Bill was drafted by the Law Reform Commission, headed by Dame Anita Allen.

The bill, which is 123 pages, would repeal the Bahamas Nationality Act and the Immigration Act.

It would also establish provisions for those seeking asylum in The Bahamas.

The bill also established more clearly who is allowed to land in The Bahamas and the power of immigration officers to grant permission to land and reside in The Bahamas.

Regional jurist wants Caribbean countries to hold referendum together on CCJ

Former Antigua and Barbuda attorney general, Queen Counsel Justin Simon is calling on Caribbean countries that have not yet made the Trinidadbased Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) their final court to hold a simultaneous referendum on the matter.

Simon said referendums had been held unsuccessfully in St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Antigua and Barbuda describing the outcome as “an unfortunate thing”.

“The problem we face is that we cannot change that provision in the Constitution. It is what we call an entrenched clause which demands that there must be a two-thirds majority and to change that you must also have a two-thirds majority in a referendum.

“So we are faced with that obstacle and . . . that is one of the

things that I said when we went into the referendum in Antigua and Barbuda that it should be a regional collective effort.

Not just Antigua alone going, not just St Vincent and the Grenadines going.

“I think all of the Caribbean territories should seek to go together,” he said, adding, “It is a common purpose and the persons or electorate in all the territories will understand and appreciate and they would not think as there was some thought along those lines in Antigua that it is because it is something which is beneficial to the politicians.”

UK gov’t to announce compensation for Windrush victims by end of week

British High Commissioner to Antigua and Barbuda Janice Douglas has announced that the British Government will announce, by the end of this week, a compensation package for victims of the Windrush scandal.

Douglas made the remarks during a courtesy call on Prime Minister Gaston Browne and Foreign Affairs Minister E. P. “Chet” Greene on Monday.

The scandal arose after deportation threats were issued in April 2018 to children of Caribbean citizens who have been working and living in the United Kingdom since 1948 (also known as the Windrush generation), over a lack of official paperwork.

In July 2018 the office of Antigua and Barbuda’s High Commissioner to Britain met with the Windrush Task Force

and persons affected by the Windrush fallout.

According to British media, Home Secretary Sajid Javid will announce details of the package – estimated to cost between £150 million to £310 million.

Home Office officials say 15 thousand people may have a right to compensation for being wrongly deported, forced out of their jobs, or losing access to benefits.

British Prime Minister Theresa May – who was also Home Secretary from 2010 to 2016 – apologised to Caribbean leaders over the controversy during a Downing Street meeting last year.

However, Prime Minister May stood by the hardline immigration policy which led to the controversy, despite many persons being caught out

by her crackdown on illegal immigration and have not regularised their status in Britain.

In the interim, Douglas also announced that her team was one step closer to finalizing the location of the new Office for the British High Commissioner in Antigua and Barbuda.

“A location has been identified that will serve jointly as an official residence and for the offices for the resident British High Commissioner,” she said.

As part of Britain’s New Caribbean Strategy, the office is meant to strengthen the UK’s cooperation with the Caribbean region. The opening ceremony for the new High Commission facility is expected to be held in the coming months.

Prime Minister Browne took the opportunity to thank the High Commissioner for her country’s financing of the reconstruction of the Sir George Walter Highway and Friars Hill Road.

Over-water Hotels: Are They Sustainable?

In the race to win the tourism dollar there is always an ambition by providers to deliver something unique; something new and distinctive that seeks to go beyond a competitor’s offerings elsewhere. Because nations across the Caribbean are already replete with beachfront villas and hotels, it is almost impossible to beat the views and ambiance of a room looking out onto the shore.

But for some providers, their goal of going one better has seen them take to the seas, setting up over-water hotels (OWHs) that allow tourists to sleep above the water without the motion that comes with a boat. OWHs offer a number of advantages over their land-based competition but how financially viable are they? And how sustainable are they in an era when climate change is posing new threats to land and sea?

Today, OWHs are regularly eyed across many postcards, mobile phone backgrounds and, of course, tourism advertisements. While as permanent accommodations on water they are unquestionably visually stunning, they are also great achievements of strategic vision and engineering. The OWH concept owes its origins to the pioneering efforts of Californian Jay Carlisle and two friends on the small island of Ra’iâtea in French Polynesia. The entrepreneurial trio, who moved to Tahiti in the late 1950s, were trying to attract tourists but the lack of sand meant that building beachfront accommodation wasn’t an option. Initially constructing three humble rooms on stilts, they wrote the first chapter of a tourism revolution.

In 1970 the Hotel Bora Bora corporatised the OWH idea, and thereafter hotel after hotel that had the means looked to take advantage of the idyllic accommodation concept. Today there are some 170 OWHs in the world, all owing their origin to three expats with a dream, on a little island in the South Pacific.

OWHs Come to the Caribbean

A local version of the OWH concept was long in the planning.

It was not until 2016 that the Caribbean got its first entry in a range of OWHs with the December 1st, 2016 opening of the Sandals Royal Caribbean in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Those who have stayed

Overwater villas at a beachfront villa will know the fantastic feeling of waking up and seeing the ocean. For anyone yet to make a trip to an OWH, there is not only the obvious appeal of a first class view of the waves, but many other attractions beyond.

An OWH can offer 360 degree views of the ocean. They can offer glass-bottom floors to give access to the world’s greatest aquarium. And for snorkelers and scuba divers, there is no better accommodation than a room that lets you start the morning by jumping right into the water on your doorstep.

Just the same, the reality is that OWHs — because they are so enticing — are classified as luxury accommodation, with a price tag accordingly. With an overnight stay at the Saint Lucia Sandals Grande Resort at time of writing costing well north of US$1,500, one night could cost more than a whole week staying in 4-star accommodation on shore, with a price per night of US$159-$286 found across the nation. However fantastic the OWH concept is, the rate is too high for someone backpacking through the region, or seeking accommodation that leverages the value found in the era of Airbnb. For this reason, it’s no surprise that the market for OWHs targets honeymooners in particular, seeking a ‘once in a lifetime’ holiday, alongside regular luxury travellers.

The Changing Tides

To some extent, OWHs have some immunity from the rising sea levels that climate change could bring. For any hotelier or

developer currently considering a new hotel in the region, OWHs not only offer a unique drawcard, but also some ‘future-proofing’ against the threat of climate change.

OWHs are built to provide guests with a feeling of closeness and easy access to the ocean. If they are built too high above the water, this feeling can be diminished.

There is also the issue of supporting infrastructure. Many OWHs have lower level balconies, sundecks, and other amenities such as swimming pools that sit just above the sea’s surface. Many feature ladders and stairs that provide direct access to the water and are often partly submerged in them. Rising sea levels pose a risk to this infrastructure, and can mean a costly construction bill to alter in time ahead as seas rise.

This to say nothing of the natural disasters, like a hurricane, that can wreak havoc to an OWH site, the same as they can to a beachfront one.

Over and Under

Just as OWHs have enjoyed great popularity around the world since their origins in French Polynesia, the popularity of underwater hotels (UHs) is growing globally. Already, Dubai, the Maldives and Sweden have made notable inroads in bringing underwater hotels into the mainstream. Yet the expense of construction and ongoing maintenance is not insignificant when compared to costs for a hotel on land.

CDB grant to help Caricom investigate suitability of plantation white sugar for regional manufacturing

A collaboration between the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) aims to improve the availability of data to guide evidence-based decisions about the future of sugar in CARICOM.

CDB will provide a grant of USD97,488 to fund a technical study on the substitutability of plantation white for refined sugar in the Region’s manufacturing sector. The findings will enhance the capacity of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) to make decisions on the CARICOM sugar regime, and will also contribute to a wider exercise being undertaken by

the Customs Committee of the COTED to comprehensively review the Common External Tariff, to facilitate the transition to the free circulation of goods and a more modernised application of rule of origin.

CDB’s Director of Projects, Daniel Best notes, “We import two-thirds of the estimated 320,000 tonnes of the refined sugar consumed annually within CARICOM. If plantation white can be substituted for refined white sugar, regional producers can capture a larger share of the sugar market and the Region can save considerable foreign exchange. The findings of this study will provide, therefore, data needed to make

critical investment decisions for the sugar industry.”

Barbados, Belize, Guyana and Jamaica, four sugar producing countries in the CSME, account for an average of 10 percent of earnings from sugar exports. In Belize, Guyana and Jamaica, the industry is also a major employer in rural communities, providing an average of 16,000 direct jobs.

The Project is consistent with CDB’s objectives of supporting agriculture and rural development and promoting evidence-based policy making as a tenet of good governance. It is also in keeping with the Bank’s Technical Assistance Policy and Operational Strategy.

Six Senses launches in Grenada

Trinidad granny goes to court for slapping someone’s child at school

A 65-year-old grandmother has been ordered to pay a $250 fine after she was found guilty last Friday of slapping a 12-year-old school child on the school’s compound in 2017.

The fine was imposed on Esther Ramjohn by Magistrate Sanara Toon at the Port of Spain Magistrates’ Court, two years after Ramjohn was arrested and charged with assaulting the girl.

Should Ramjohn fail to pay the fine, she will be made to serve two months’ imprisonment with hard labour.

The State’s case was that on the afternoon of February 7, 2017, the standard four pupil was standing on the compound of the Sacred Hearts Girls Roman Catholic School speaking with other pupils while awaiting the arrival of her parents to pick her up.

While doing so, Ramjohn, the grandmother of another pupil, walked up to her and slapped her across the face. All of this transpired in the presence of the school’s safety officer as well as a security officer, neither of whom did anything to assist the child, the State contended.

The child’s mother was eventually contacted, who in turn made a report to police. An investigation was launched and Ramjohn was arrested sometime later and charged with the offence of assault by beating.

When she first appeared in court, Ramjohn pleaded not guilty to the charge and the matter proceeded to trial. She was found guilty of the offence last Friday.

In passing sentence, Magistrate Toon said it was intolerable for anyone to assault anyone else’s child, more so, on the compound of a school.

Brexit: MPs back delay bill by one vote

MPs have voted by a majority of one to force the prime minister to ask for an extension to the Brexit process, in a bid to avoid a no-deal scenario.

Malaysia’s government has agreed to sell a seized superyacht allegedly bought with money stolen from the 1MDB state fund for $126m (£95.9m).

Ecuador’s president says Assange breached terms of London embassy asylum

President Lenin Moreno of Ecuador told radio stations on Tuesday that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has “repeatedly violated” the terms of his asylum in the Andean nation’s London embassy, where he has lived for nearly seven years.

Pope defends decision to reject French cardinal’s resignation

Pope Francis on Sunday defended his decision to reject the resignation of Philippe Barbarin, the French Roman Catholic cardinal convicted on charges of failing to report sexual abuse.

Speaking to reporters on the plane returning from a two-day trip to Morocco, Francis said he was obliged to give the archbishop of Lyon the benefit of the doubt until his appeal is heard.

“I can’t accept it because in juridical terms, in classic world jurisprudence, there is the presumption of innocence as long as the case is open, and he has appealed,” Francis said.

Barbarin offered his resignation when he met the pope on March 18.

A court in Lyon ruled on March 7 that between July 2014 and June 2015, Barbarin covered up allegations of sexual abuse of boy scouts in the 1980s and early 1990s by a priest who is due to go on trial later this year.

Barbarin, 68, the highestprofile cleric to be caught up in the child sex abuse scandal inside the French Church, received a sixmonth suspended prison sentence.

He has denied the allegations and launched an appeal.

“When the second court hands down its decision, then we will see what will happen. But we must always have the presumption of innocence. This is important because it goes beyond the superficial condemnation by the media,” the pope said.

Amsterdam sex workers angry at red light district tours ban

The city of Amsterdam’s latest attempt to rein in the nuisance of overtourism by banning guided tours of the red light district has run into opposition from some of the people it is intended to protect: sex workers.

The Dutch capital plans to ban such tours, saying they are disrespectful and contribute to congestion in the narrow, canal-side streets where scantilyclad sex workers sit behind windows to attract customers.

The first step in the new policy was taken Monday night in the red light district, with tours banned from 7 p.m.

On a recent Friday night, the problem was clear to see: Tourists bathed in a red glow emanating from the windows and peep shows’ neon lights were packed shoulder to shoulder as they shuffled through the alleys.

But sex workers’ union Proud questions whether banning tours will reduce tourist numbers and argues that guides educate visitors and encourage them to behave more respectfully toward the women.

“It could also be that now there are no guides that people just wander into the area themselves and gawk at the women behind the window and take photos because there is no one anymore

City Hall says that more than 1,000 tour groups per week now operate around the Old Church Square in the heart of the red light district.

“Yeah, there’s really overtourism there — too crowded. I mean there were evenings where ... residents basically couldn’t leave their homes anymore because the alleys were blocked,” the city’s deputy mayor, Udo Kock, told The Associated Press.

People who work in Amsterdam’s sex industry question whether there are more tourists, or whether similar numbers are squeezing into a red light district that has shrunk in recent years as hundreds of the sex workers’ windows have been shuttered in an attempt to diversify the narrow streets.

Boeing software re-engaged before Ethiopian crash

Boeing anti-stall software forced down the nose of a doomed Ethiopian jet even after pilots had turned it off, sources told Reuters on Wednesday, as investigators scrutinize the role played by technology and crew in the fatal March 10 crash.

A preliminary Ethiopian report into the disaster is due to be published within days and may include evidence the software system kicked in as many as four times before the 737 MAX dived into the ground, two people with knowledge of the matter said.

A third person familiar with the findings confirmed the software had fired up again after pilots had initially switched it off, but said there was only one significant episode in which the plane pointed itself lower in the moments before the crash.

The software known as MCAS is at the center of accident probes in both the crash of Ethiopian flight 302 and a Lion Air accident in Indonesia five months earlier that together killed 346 people.

It was not immediately clear whether the Ethiopian crew chose to re-deploy the system, which pushes the Boeing 737 MAX downwards to avoid stalling. But one of the sources said investigators were studying the possibility that the software started working again without human intervention.

A Boeing spokeswoman declined to comment. Ethiopian investigators were not available for comment.

The Ethiopian crash led to a global grounding of 737 MAX

The stakes are high. The 737 MAX is Boeing’s top-selling jet with almost 5,000 on order.

Ethiopian Airlines is also in the midst of an expansion drive, while other 737 MAX customers and victims’ families want answers, and potentially compensation.

Getting the planes flying again depends partly on the role that Boeing design features are found to have played in the crash, though investigators are also paying attention to airline operations, crew actions and regulatory measures.

Boeing is upgrading the MCAS software and training while stressing that existing cockpit procedures enable safe flight.

People familiar with the investigation have already said the anti-stall software was activated by erroneous ‘angle of attack’ data

from a key aircraft sensor.

Now, the investigation has turned toward how MCAS was initially disabled by pilots, but then appeared to resume sending automated instructions to point downwards before the jet plunged to the ground, the two sources said.

Boeing issued guidelines to pilots on how to disable the anti-stall system after the Indonesian crash, reminding pilots to use cut-out switches in the console to shut off the system in the event of problems.

Cockpit procedures call for pilots to leave the MCAS system off for the rest of the flight once it has been disengaged.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that the pilots had initially followed Boeing’s emergency procedures but later deviated from them as they tried to regain control of the plane.

Disabling the system does not shut down MCAS completely but severs an electrical link between the software’s attempts to give orders to push the plane lower and the actual controls, a person familiar with the aircraft system said.

Investigators are studying whether there are any conditions under which MCAS could re-activate itself automatically, without the pilots intentionally reversing the cut-out maneuver.

Safety experts stress the investigation is far from complete and most aviation disasters are caused by a unique combination of human and technical factors.

None of the parties involved in the investigation was available for comment.

Bezos’ girlfriend’s brother ‘single source’ for reports

The publisher of the National Enquirer on Sunday said its reports on Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos’ private life were based on information from a single source, the brother of Bezos’ girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez.

The statement from American Media Inc. followed publication by Bezos security chief Gavin De Becker of an article in the Daily Beast in which he said the government of Saudi Arabia had accessed private information from Bezos’ phone.

While De Becker said in the article that there was “high confidence that the Saudis had access to Bezos’ phone,” it was “unclear to what degree, if any, AMI was aware of the details.”

Nevertheless, AMI released a statement saying its reports on Bezos’ affair with Sanchez were based solely on information provided by Michael Sanchez, “who tipped the National Enquirer off to the affair on Sept. 10, 2018, and over the course of four months provided all of the materials for our investigation.

“There was no involvement by any third party whatsoever,” it added.

Gavin de Becker & Associates did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A representative for the Saudi embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Apple might release three OLED iPhones in 2020; one could be an iPhone SE 2

A new report has stated that Apple could be planning on releasing three iPhones in 2020 that all feature OLED panels, which will probably be supplied by Samsung. As one of the 2020 phones is rumored to be coming in a 5.42inch size, there has been speculation this could be a next-generation iPhone SE.

In 2018, Apple released the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. While the two XS models sported

OLED screens, the iPhone XR came with an LCD. According to a supply chain source, the company is planning on continuing the same two OLED/one LCD format for its 2019 iPhone releases but will then move to OLED panels for all of its three 2020 iPhones.

Along with revealing Apple’s intentions to move completely to OLED screens, the source also stated the expected sizes of the 2020 devices.

It seems the three iPhones will offer 5.42-in, 6.06-in, and 6.67-in displays.

The latter two sizes fit in with current iPhone dimensions: 5.8-in iPhone XS, 6.1-in iPhone XR, 6.5-in iPhone XS Max. But the 5.42-inch offering is noticeably smaller, which has led some to proclaim this could be a next-generation iPhone SE, or the iPhone SE 2.

This could be just wishful thinking though. There’s no doubt there

are many who would love to see Apple bring out a sequel to the diminutive and popular iPhone SE. But that phone had a 4.0-in display diagonal, which is obviously much smaller than the reported 5.42 inches for the 2020 device.

One of the main selling points of the iPhone SE was its compact size; a 5.42in iPhone SE 2 would have to bring different USPs to the table.

Nokia’s X71 phone has a hole-punch display and a 48-megapixel camera

Nokia is the latest Android phone-maker to embrace the holepunch display with the launch of the X71. Camera-centric phones have been par for the course for Nokia under both its previous owner Microsoft and current brand licensee HMD Global.

The new handset, which touts a

48-megapixel triple-camera with Zeiss lenses, is no different.

It’s debuting in Taiwan for around $385, but could make it to the west as the Nokia 8.1 Plus, according to GSM Arena. That price positions it between the $490 Huawei Nova 4 and Xiaomi’s $203 Redmi Note 7 Pro,

WhatsApp now lets you control who can add you to groups

WhatsApp is introducing new controls that let you limit who can add you to group messages. VentureBeat notes that the app now lets you stop people from adding you to groups if they’re not a contact in your address book.

Alternatively, you can prevent anyone at all from being able to add you, or else leave the option open to all.

The feature is one part of a host of changes the service is making to try and stop misinformation from easily spreading. The BBC reported that ahead of Brazil’s elections last year political campaigners were using software to automatically add swaths of people to politically motivated WhatsApp groups without their consent. Time reports that similar practices are widespread in India.

WhatsApp has already limited the amount of times a message can be forwarded to five, and also now labels forwarded messages to draw attention to them. Yesterday, the service launched a new fact-checking service in India which users can use to verify the truthfulness of any messages they’ve been sent.

Users that restrict who can add them to groups can still be added by private invitation. They’ll receive a link, which gives basic information about the group they’ve been invited to, and can choose to join it if they want to. Otherwise the link expires in 72 hours.

Previously a WhatsApp support page noted that the only way to prevent being added to a group was to block the group’s admin.

The new settings can be accessed by heading to Account options within the settings menu. Select Privacy, then Groups, and you’ll be able to select who exactly can add you to a group. This gives you three options, Nobody, My Contacts, or Everyone. WhatsApp’s new group controls are launching today, and will be rolling out to all users in the coming weeks.

New iPhones Could Feature Two-Way Wireless Charging & Bigger Batteries

MacRumors reports that reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple’s 2019 iPhones will add support for twoway (bilateral) wireless charging.

The analyst made the claim in a report that he sent out to investors on Monday.

In regards to the rumored feature, bilateral wireless charging means that users will be able to place wireless charging-enabled devices on the back of their iPhone.

The iPhone will then have the ability to distribute power to that device via wireless charging. For example, users can charge their

AirPods or even iPhones through bilateral wireless charging, since both devices are equipped with the wireless charging feature.

“We expect the new 2H19 iPhone models will support two-way wireless charging,” Kuo stated in his note. “Though the iPhone is not the first high-end smartphone to be equipped with two-way wireless charging, this new function could make it more convenient for users to charge the new AirPods and create a better integrated user experience of the iPhone and AirPods.”

Samsung’s latest Galaxy

S10 debuted the support for two-way wireless charging, and Samsung claims that users can charge Qi-enabled devices, including the iPhone. Additionally, in order to support the bilateral charging feature, Kuo says that iPhone battery sizes will essentially increase. The analyst predicts that the 5.8-inch iPhone battery will grow between 20 and 25 percent and the 6.5-inch by about 10 and 15 percent. Meanwhile, Kuo predicts the 6.1-inch iPhone XR battery will increase by just about zero to five percent.

Snapchat’s new Status feature lets you tell your friends what you’re doing right now

You can choose a Bitmoji to represent what you’re doing (like playing basketball, working on your laptop, or downing a taco), and build up a list of places you’ve visited in a feature called Passport.

Previously, Snap Maps figured out what you were up to by pulling up a random Bitmoji to represent the time of day and place you’re at.

Soon, to the benefit of your bored friends, they’ll be able to see what exactly you’re up to.

The feature was first spotted by Jane Manchun Wong, and reported by TechCrunch. A Snapchat spokesperson told the publication that Status is currently being tested to a select few users in Australia.

Inter Primary School National Track & Field Championships highlights

he Inter Primary School National Track & Field Championships, which featured more than 20 primary schools, has been hailed as a success.

The event which was last hosted in 2015 was held on Friday, March 29th and Saturday March 30th at the TCI National Stadium in Providenciales. ` Scores of parents, family members, government officials and teachers came out to show their support.

The top five winning schools were;1st position - Oseta Jolly Primary School with 321 points, 2nd position Ianthe Pratt Primary School with 303 points, 3rd position - Enid Capron Primary School with 258 points, 4th position - Ona Glinton Primary School with 242 and 5th position - Iris Stubbs Primary School with 122 points.

Mr. Jarrett Forbes, Director of Sports said, “These pass few weekends were filled with excitement as we witnessed the exceptional performances of our youth in the sport of track and field.

Hats off to the National Governing Body for Track and Field under the leadership of TCAAA President, Edith Skippings who worked tirelessly to organize the officiating and management of the various meets. Federer downs injured Isner in Miami for 101st career title

Roger Federer defeated a hobbling John Isner 6-1 6-4 for his 101th career title at the Miami Open on Sunday.

Holder Isner struggled to continue late in the second set, hampered by pain in his left foot.

Federer, who won his fourth Miami title, broke Isner three times in a blazing opening set.

“It was a dream start, relaxing my nerves,” the Swiss, 37, said in a courtside interview.

But the American fought back in the second, leveling the set at 3-3 and 4-4 before the pain made it difficult to continue. Federer took the final two games for the victory.

“What a week its been for me,” said the fourth seed.

“I’m just so happy right now. It’s unbelievable. I played here in 1999 for the first time and here I am in 2019. It means a lot to me.”

NBA to invest millions of dollars in new African league

The NBA will invest millions of dollars in Basketball Africa League, its first professional league outside of North America, and will be hands-on in its operation, a top executive said on Tuesday.

The NBA, in partnership with the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), is launching the Basketball Africa League in January 2020, featuring 12 teams from across the continent.

“This league will be fully operated by the NBA,” Amadou Gallo Fall, the NBA’s vice president for Africa, told Reuters by phone from Johannesburg.

“Our expertise and best practices will be on display.”

The NBA generated $8 billion in revenue last season, according to Forbes, and industry players say audience interest in Africa has grown alongside the profile of Africans playing in the world’s top basketball league.

Cameroon’s Joel Embiid, a 25-year old center for the Philadelphia 76ers has emerged as a top player in the NBA, signing a five-year contract with the team worth nearly $150 million in 2017.

This season, Embiid and 24-year-old Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, born in Greece to Nigerian parents, are contenders to become the NBA’s most valuable player.

The NBA established an Africa office nine years ago. It held its first NBA Africa game in 2015.

Games in 2017 and 2018 were played in front of sold-out crowds in South Africa.

Basketball Africa League will involve six national champions — from Nigeria, Angola, Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and Senegal — who will automatically qualify for the competition. The remaining six will come through international qualifiers later this year.

Braves sign Acuna to eight-year, $100 million extension

The Atlanta Braves and 21-year-old outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr. have agreed to an eight-year, $100 million contract extension, the team announced on Tuesday.

The deal begins this season and is the largest in history for a player with as little major league service time as Acuna (165 days), according to the Braves. He also is believed to be the youngest player to receive a $100 million contract.

It is also the second-largest contract in franchise history, trailing the eight-year, $135 million deal for Freddie Freeman in 2014.

Acuna’s contract runs through 2026 and includes club options for 2027 and 2028, with ESPN and other outlets reporting that the options were worth $17 million each.

Acuna was named the National League Rookie of the Year in 2018 after batting .293 with 26 homers, 64 RBIs, 78 runs scored and 16 stolen bases in 111 games. In 68 games after the All-Star break, he posted a .322/.403/.625 line with 19 homers.

Through the Braves’ first four games this year, Acuna was 3-for-14 at the plate with one home run and two RBIs.

Atlanta originally signed the Venezuela native as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2014. He had been scheduled to earn $560,000 this season.

U.S. women’s soccer team says lawsuit about more than money

Members of the United States women’s soccer squad (USWNT) have told Reuters their lawsuit against the national federation alleging gender discrimination is not just about wages but also improving the sport for women participating in it at all levels.

All 28 members of the squad were named as plaintiffs in the lawsuit, which was filed in federal court last month and says the women are not paid the same as their male counterparts.

While the U.S. men’s team have voiced their support, the U.S. Soccer Federation has said it was surprised by the lawsuit, with its president, Carlos Cordeiro, saying it strives for equal pay and has boosted its investment in female player development programs.

Midfielder Megan Rapinoe told Reuters in an interview timed with Equal Pay Day on April 2 that they were also pushing for systematic change.

“For us it is really important to really look at the bigger picture of the compensation piece,” she said.

“I don’t think you can talk about compensation articulately or intelligently until you have a conversation about funding across the board,” she said.

“So whether that is youth teams or staffing for each team or promotion and sponsorship, you know, advertising for both teams, I don’t think that that is equal yet,” she said.

“So yes we are fighting for equal compensation but we are also fighting for this larger picture of investment in both programs equally.”

Since the lawsuit was filed, some companies have stepped in to help close the pay gap.

The women said the lawsuit would not distract them from their efforts to win back-to-back World Cups, and a fourth title overall, when they compete in France in June.

“Success for us is very simple and it is very clear from the first second that you get on the team, whether it is like a passing pattern or a small-sided game or a friendly or a World Cup final — it’s winning,” Rapinoe said.

“It’s competing to the best of your ability, it’s trying to be the absolute best that you can so for us the expectation is always the same, success for us looks like winning,” she said.

NBA fines three Warriors for ripping refs

The NBA issued a total of $75,000 in fines to three Golden State Warriors players on Tuesday for their criticisms of officials.

Forward Draymond Green was fined $35,000 for making statements on social media which “impugned the integrity of NBA officiating,” according to the press release from NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Kiki VanDeWeghe.

Guard Stephen Curry was fined $25,000 for his actions and public statements “impugning the integrity of NBA officiating.”

Forward Kevin Durant was fined $15,000 for public criticism of the officiating.

The actions of all three players had to dowith the Warriors’ 131130 overtime loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night.
