$6MILLION MEDICAL BILL By Todeline Defralien

J

ust over $6million was spent on medical treatment abroad for residents of the Turks and Caicos Islands between July 1st, 2018 and December 1st, 2018. This amount, which was revealed by Minister of Health, Hon. Edwin Astwood, works out to be an average of just over $1million per month. Astwood noted that subsistence was just over half-million dollars, while $1.7million was spent on travel arrangements. The Minister announced the figures following questions asked by Hon. Akierra Missick, Leeward & Long Bay MP during a House of Assembly meeting on Monday March 25th. Missick asked how many persons were how many persons were referred for treatment overseas pursuing to the treatment abroad program July 1st 2018- December 1st, 2018. Where were they referred, what were the cost of these referrals specific to the countries they were referred to and what is the expenditure of their treatment abroad program from July 1st, 2018 – December 1st, 2018. The Minister revealed that from the period of January –March 6th there were a total of 588 persons referred to the treatment abroad program.

Annual Golf & Fishing Tournament donates $20,000 cheques to local charities

rganizers of the Annual Wine Cellar Golf & Fishing Tournament are proud to announce that this year’s proceeds from the 9th annual event were presented to two youth-oriented charitable organizations; the Edward Gartland Youth Centre and Provo Sailing Academy. During a cheque Presentation Ceremony on Wednesday April 3rd, the two charities received $20,000 each to go towards making a difference in TCI. The Edward Gartland Youth Centre is a

non-profit organization providing a centre for the youth of Providenciales with activities range from tutoring, to sports and recreation, arts and craft and so much more. The Provo Sailing Academy’s dedicated staff has taught many a young local the fine art of sailing. This brings the total donated by the Wine Cellar Golf & Fishing Tournament (WCGFT) Committee to $281,000. Organizers stated that they look forward to giving even more next year.

PREMIER ANNOUNCES SHUFFLE Premier Hon. Sharlene Robinson made a mid-term Cabinet reshuffle on Thursday, April 4th, 2019, saying that the new portfolio assignments and the reassignments of departments are “sure to assist us in delivering on our promises and list of priority flagship projects”. The Premier said she will continue to hold the Ministry of Finance and the Premier’s Office will be renamed Office of the Premier, Local Government and Community Affairs. The new portfolios are:

SONIA FULFORD RE-ELECTED TO THE CONCACAF COUNCIL Sonia Fulford, president of the Turks and Caicos Islands Football Association (TCIFA) was re-elected to Council of Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (Concacaf) during its 34th Ordinary Congress which was held on March 28, 2019, at The Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Congress is an annual meeting of all 41 Member countries of Concacaf. It is presided over by Concacaf President and FIFA Vice President, Victor Montagliani and deals with the various matters being currently dealt with by the Confederation, a review of past year events and finances amongst other pertinent matters. A critical agenda item is the
