HIGH POWERED GUNS IN TCI by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief
H
igh-powered weapons, including assault rifles such as AK-47s, Uzis, Tec-9s, Bushmaster AR15s and ARXs, are prevalent and easily-accessible in the Turks and Caicos Islands, investigations by The SUN have revealed. These weapons, some of which are far superior to the firearms used by members of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, are allegedly being smuggled in along with ammunition from neighbouring countries such as Haiti, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and the USA. These smuggling schemes that are apparently so advanced and wellorganised that the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force is having challenges clamping down. In the recently-released 2019 International Narcotics Control Strategy Report (INCSR) from the US State Department, President Donald Trump identified The Bahamas, Dominican Republic, Haiti and Jamaica among the “major drug transit or major illicit drug producing countries” in the world. Although Turks and Caicos Islands was not mentioned in that report, information reaching The SUN revealed that as illegal drugs pass through the TCI en route to The Bahamas and the USA, high-powered weapons are also included. “Any gun you can get in the (United) States you can get in Turks Islands,” a source told The SUN on condition of anonymity. “And when I tell you any gun, I mean any gun!” Last week, a video circulated on social media along with a report showing significant damage to a concrete wall of a house in Five Cays by what a resident claimed was a high-powered weapon. “Right now if there’s a shootout between the street and the police, trust me, the street will win hands down,” the source added. “Ni*gas ain’t playing when it comes to guns.” In recent times, in addition to the wooden sloops, high-speed boats

Meantime, the INCSR report noted that Haiti remains a transit point for cocaine originating in South America and marijuana originating in Jamaica, traversing the country’s porous borders en route to the United States and other markets. This traffic takes advantage of Haiti’s severely under-patrolled maritime borders and its extensive land border with the Dominican Republic, it was stated. The State Department report also noted that Haitian and HaitianBahamian drug trafficking organizations, networked between Haiti and the significant Haitian diaspora in The Bahamas, continue to play a role in the movement of cocaine. It also stated that throughout 2018, traffickers continued to split up larger loads into smaller loads before entering the southern Bahamas. continued on page 2
