BAN ON OLD CARS by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief
G
overnment is about to slam the brakes on the importation of old cars, mainly the popular Japanese right-hand drive vehicles or 242s, as they are popularly called. Premier and Minister of Finance Hon. Sharlene Robinson said in her budget speech on Wednesday, May 1st, 2019, that the ban will be on vehicles 10 years and older. “We will be seeking to ban cars at certain age and will seek simultaneously in lowering the import duties on newer cars as an incentive,” the Premier said. Several other Caribbean countries have placed restrictions on importing vehicles above a certain age largely because of environmental issues and vociferous complaints from established new-car dealers. The demand for affordable vehicles together with Japan’s huge used-car market has created a lucrative industry for exporting and importing second-hand Japanese vehicles in the Caribbean.

political milk in this cow for the PDM”. These remarks were made during a House of assembly meeting on Wednesday, May 1st 2019. He said, “This never dying always living issue that has been going on since 2009 and it is time for a line to be drawn under it. Mr. Speaker with a reference to the FSPS and my numbers may be off because I am referring to the FSPS numbers when I received it. The annual allocation for the prosecution and defense of the ongoing corruption trial in 2019/2020 is budgeted I think the Premier said $10.3million, this says $9.2million or 3.6% of the National Budget.” He added: “Mr. Speaker at one point this trial was high as 8% of the national budget, which could be better

spent on the police and border security.” Misick stated that contrary to the government’s view, the British has lost the high moral ground and the hearts of those who once welcomed their intervention. “There is no more political milk in this cow and it is time that the PDM government exercise maturity, stand with the masses and refuse to appropriate any further funding for the case unless there is a proposition to bring this matter to an acceptable and equitable close.” He continued: “I notice strictly by nuance that the Premier and the Government thinks that there is some more political milk in this cow. It doesn’t enrich your position. In fact Leader of the Opposition, Hon. Washington it, impoverishes just all of us and so a Misick statement has to be made.
