by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief
S
ome 3,402 illegal persons have been removed from the Turks and Caicos Islands over the past 16 months, said Deputy Premier Hon. Sean Astwood. He said that out of this amount, for the period January 2018 to April 2019 exactly 1,414 persons were picked during land-based enforcement activities. “These are illegal persons who in some cases have been here for years living and working among you and they are no longer here today, that is real change. No other government or Minister of Immigration can boast these kinds of statistics,” Astwood said during last week’s budget debate in the House of Assembly. He noted that “Operation Guardian” was the single largest effort undertaken to target irregular persons living and working within the TCI in the history of these islands. “This operation led by the Immigration department has been successful in tackling the largest area of illegal persons in our islands, which are mainly persons who overstay their visas or their work permit has expired and they have not left the country,” the Deputy Premier stated. He revealed that apprehensions (other than by vessel landings) was 445 in the calendar period 2017 and was tripled to 1,303 in 2018.
