NO SABOTAGE, SAYS FORTIS By Todeline Defralien

F

ortis TCI has categorically denied allegations that the recent islandwide power outages on the island of Providenciales were part of an effort to sabotage the country’s electricity system and punish customers in order to pressure government during the ongoing rate increase application negotiations. “I think that anybody who says that (we would punish customers because we didn’t get the rate increase) does not know this company, does not know this management team, and does not know the 170 people that work with this company. We would never do that. Absolutely would never do that,” said the company’s Chief Executive Officer Mr. Eddinton Powell. In July 2018, Fortis filed a rate variation application under Section 34 of the Electricity Ordinance, which proposed an average rate increase of 6.8%. Residential customers with an average monthly consumption of 500 kWh would see an increase of approximately $8 per month on their electricity bills. The company said the rate variation application seeks to restore the company to a stable financial position following the impact of the 2017 hurricanes. The financial impact on FortisTCI of Hurricanes Irma and Maria is estimated at $42 million. Powell added: “Yes we are going through a rate case with the government. That’s fine and that’s understood, but in terms of service to our customers, in terms of service to this country we would never do that! Absolutely, it never happened and never will.” On Tuesday, June 4th and Wednesday, June 5th, 2019, a technical fault at the FortisTCI power plant on Leeward Highway resulted in two island-wide outages and a prolonged interruption in service to some Providenciales customers, including most of the resorts and customers in the upscale Grace Bay tourist belt and surrounding areas. During and after the blackout there were widespread reports that the delay in restoring power was because Fortis had to fly in a part from Canada where its head office is located. Powell said this never happened.

Jay Saunders is the new Deputy Leader of the Progressive National Party (PNP). The official announcement was made during a press conference on Wednesday, June 12th, 2019, at PNP Headquarters on Airport Road, Providenciales. Opposition Leader Hon. Washington Misick said there were several persons interested in the post and it was a very difficult decision for him to make. “A lot of people have been weighing in on the selection, nomination/ appointment of the deputy leader for this party once we came out of the elections months ago. Persons have been constantly asking who is going to be the deputy leader of the Party. This is always a difficult job in the Progressive National Party and it is a difficult job because there are so many talented people in this party who qualify to deputise or for that matter, to lead. Each person who put their names on the dotted line is a leader in his own right,” Misick said. He added: “Part of the reason why yours truly has invested the time and energy in helping to organize some of the training that is going on, is to make sure that our members and those persons who put themselves up to help to run

this country, will understand and have an appreciation for what leadership is about. A number of persons, all qualified, have expressed their interest in being the Deputy Leader of the Progressive National Party and it was a very difficult decision for me to make.” Misick said he knows some people will be sorely disappointed in his choice that he has made but he is hoping that at the end of the day everyone can hold their hands up and be leaders in whatever seats they sit in. “I think that it is realistic on my part and the party’s part to know that this is definitely my very last stand, and I promise you that I will do my very best to work hard, to own and develop a fighting machine for 2020,” he added. “The person that I am about to appoint as the Deputy Leader of the Party is someone significantly younger than me but a warning to that person, the hard work once you nominated has just begun. I know that there are people in the party who are going to be disappointed because they had their own preferences. The party should be very careful about how we support or how we don’t support each other. I think each person who has put their name on the dotted line should have the humility to listen, take the time to explain things to supports. Part of our jobs as Leaders is to teach people as well,” Misick added.

Commenting on his appointment, Saunders thanked the Leader of the Opposition for having confidence in him. Jay Saunders is the son of former Chief Minister Mr. Norman Saunders and his wife Emily Saunders, who was a former deputy speaker and government minister. Between both parents that have a total of 61 years of political experience. “One of the reasons why this took a very long time was because I was the chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority up until the end of March and I wanted time to get through that job role. I would also like to thank the party and public at large and also thank my family and God for his guidance through this journey that I am starting today,” he said. In addition, Saunders revealed that he always said he would not get into politics unless his country and his party needed him. “At 46 (years old) I made my entrance to frontline politics later than most politicians, but the reason why I started out late was because I always said that I wouldn’t get into politics unless my country and my party needed me, and I think that that is clearly the case. I think it is fair to say that I have seen the bad, the good and ugly of politics. Outside of my six years living abroad, I lived my entire life in Turks and Caicos Islands and this is home for me,” he added.
