KARAM HITS BACK AT ATTORNEY GENERAL
continued from page 1
This extradition request, the release added, was made with the assistance of INTERPOL, who issued a Red Notice (international arrest warrant) for Peter Karam and others. These Red Notices were published by INTERPOL on February 12, 2019. The statement added that following his arrest, Karam will have the opportunity to consider whether he wishes to contest his extradition. “If he does not contest the extradition, and there are no other outstanding issues, then everything possible will be done by Turks and Caicos authorities, in collaboration with his legal advisers and the Argentine authorities, to ensure that he is transferred to Argentina to answer to charges connected to an alleged criminal conspiracy to launder assets obtained through criminal activity contrary to the laws of Argentina,” the statement continued. The terms of Karam’s bail have not been made public, and the Extradition Hearing is scheduled to be heard on 2nd August 2019. However, in a strongly-worded
press release, Karam’s lawyer Oliver Smith took serious issue with the Government’s press statement, saying it represents a “complete failure by the Crown, to recognize their roles and responsibilities as ministers of justice and protectors of the rule of law. He stressed that the press release has only served to sensationalize the judicial process, at the expense of delivering to the public an unbiased and accurate account of these proceedings. Smith stated: “All persons within the borders of the Turks and Caicos Islands are entitled to due process before an independent and impartial tribunal. The extradition laws of the Turks and Caicos Islands are meant to protect the rights of any person within the Turks and Caicos Islands being sought for extradition. They ensure that extradition will NOT be granted if, among other things, the request is not compliant with our hallowed constitutional principles and the various pieces of legislation which guide the extradition process.” The veteran attorney said it is therefore of “massive concern and
frankly disheartening” for the Hon. Attorney General to “countenance the publication of the aforementioned press release which, among other things, incorrectly states that the extradition request, if granted, would see Mr. Karam being “transferred to Argentina to answer to charges connected to an alleged criminal conspiracy to launder assets obtained through criminal activity contrary to the laws of Argentina.” Smith said Karam has not been notified of any charges which have been brought against him in Argentina; he is being requested by the Argentine authorities for the purposes of interrogation as a part of a pre-trial judicial investigation. He added that the press release assumes that the extradition request was “lawfully and properly” made by the Argentine Republic, adding that the legality and propriety of the extradition request is to be determined by an independent and impartial judiciary, and no such determination has been made. Smith said the press release incorrectly equates a Red Notice issued
by Interpol with an international arrest warrant. “A Red Notice is NOT an international arrest warrant,” he stressed. “It is highly inappropriate for the Crown (through the Governor’s Office, the Attorney General’s Chambers, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Financial Crimes Unit of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force), to support the issue of such an irresponsible statement, which predetermines the legality and propriety of the extradition request, and prejudicially exaggerates the nature of the proceedings. The effect of this is to undermine the right given to every person within the borders of the Turks and Caicos Islands to due process before an independent tribunal. Furthermore, of equal if not greater concern, is the fact that the said press release fails to recognize, in any way, the destructive impact of recklessly and inaccurately disseminating details of ongoing legal proceedings, on Mr. Karam’s standing as an attorney-at-law and as a member of the community,” Smith added.

Cabinet approves styrofoam ban Cabinet approved on May 29th 2019 a Ban on Polystyrenes, a policy paper put forward as part of the ongoing going green for 2019 initiatives to clean up our islands, reduce waste and encourage sustainable alternatives. The policy aims to reduce the use and importation of some polystyrene products: cups and plates and will also officially ban the use and importation of plastic straws. In the Turks and Caicos Islands seafood largely consumed, fish that have ingested plastics are then introduced into the food chain and could be detrimental to human health. Lightweight Styrofoam is also easily carried away by wind and often ends up littering the streets, beaches, clogging storm drainage, and can harm Styrofoam containers animals. The main component of Styrofoam chemicals that can contaminate our food is styrene which is classified by the and drink. Recent research suggests that World Health Organisation (WHO)as the consumption of Styrofoam could a carcinogen – material that can cause lead to serious health effects. cancer. Discrimination must end in the work place says, President of Chamber of Commerce
By Todeline Defralien
Hundreds of people suffer from discrimination in the workplace locally, whether it is because of their gender, race, ethnic background, religion, national origin, and or sexual orientation. With that said, President of Providenciales Chamber of Commerce, Kyle Smith said the Turks and Caicos Islands must start advancing the rights of employers to include fair opportunities to ensure all employees are treated fairly and entitled to equitable remuneration and benefits that are measurable and scalable for their local needs, and if expatriate, to satisfy their responsibilities abroad. Presenting his speech on the perspective on initiative at the launch of Business and Human Rights, Smith said, “The Turks and Caicos Islands through its Constitution and the Employment Ordinance embodies these standards to ensure equity and fairness, and eliminate as far as possible discriminatory practices in employment and occupation against persons on the grounds of race, sex religion, color, ethic-origin, national extraction, social origin, political opinion, disability, family responsibility, pregnancy and marital status. It also encourages equal opportunity in employment occupation and other related activities.”
In addition, it is perceived in both sectors that expatriate employees receive preferential wages over local employees, which undoubtedly causes significant resentment publicly as well as in the work place. “This clearly sets out that businesses should act in accordance with the regulatory frameworks and policies that exist to govern the operations of their business. Let me hasten to add that there are businesses in the TCI whose adherence to the law is evidenced in their hiring, wage earning practices and in their human resource development. We need not go any further than the Employment Ordinance which, if read carefully, speaks to the protection against unlawful discrimination. So it begs the question. Is the wage gap between expats and locals a function of the market or is it just outright discrimination,” Smith said. Additionally, the president stated that it is not uncommon to understand the cost associated with an individual relocating from one place to another and having the burden of responsibilities in their homeland. However, it is frequently proposed that particularly in the Turks and Caicos Islands, this gap in wages is inequitable to the local counterparts. “It is presumed that the disparity generally is not one that is due
to more advanced requisite qualification, skills and experience, nor one in which expatriates are coming from countries with higher incomes or higher cost of living to demand a significantly higher pay. The resounding voice is that the disparity is significantly large enough that raises the topic of discrimination within the practices of hiring, remuneration and benefit packages that leave those welcomed to these shores much better of not only in their comfort of living in the TCI but also significantly better off once their tenure has been complete,” he explained. Furthermore Smith noted that it has to be mandated that in the action of doing business, both the public sector and private sector must be held accountable for any contravention of our laws. He said there is information that states that 10% of matters that are referred to the Labor Tribunal are directly related to discrimination in the workplace. 90% of the matters referred were related to disputes regarding wages, unfair dismissal, unfair practice and misuse of employee’s free time and vacations. Out of this 60% of the rulings were made in the favor of the employees because employers failed to follow the law. There are numerous cases 80% approximately that have yet to reach the tribunal which is currently not active.
Kyle Smith, President of Providenciales Chamber of Commerce Smith said there must be equity and equality in the hiring and employment of business equally so there must be no disparity in the terms and conditions, provisions of facilities & tools, provision of access advancement and opportunity to all. The Chamber of Commerce Providenciales along with the Human Rights Commission is committed to ensuring that its members and the overall business community provide a work environment that is free from unlawful acts of discrimination and will play its role in advocacy within the community to follow best practices that will lead to a modern society deemed to be fair and equitable for all and where its people and business are not only rewarded with titles and accolades but with unbiased compensation.

Elery James encourages local businesses to create their own products By Todeline Defralien Local businessman Elery James, owner of the successful LapelsTCI Dry Cleaners, is encouraging other entrepreneurs to create their own products in order to provide more opportunities for youth businesses. During a presentation at the Launch of Business and Human Rights on July 3rd, James indicated that developing what we have, networking and move towards non-traditional ways of raising capital will play a big role in promotion youth business opportunities. He said, “In case you haven’t seen it yet here is the trend now of promoting businesses. Primarily in Turks and Caicos what has simply became our culture is finding what someone has been doing and we do it and then we are cutting the exact same dollar. Here is a way where we wouldn’t have to cut the same dollar, because if someone is selling fry chicken I would have to sell fry chicken to cut that same dollar. I can go and develop my
own product to create another avenue of revenue.” James added that if more persons start looking at developing their own product they will find out that they did not have to venture to compete with others but rather diversify their own little niche. Commenting on his own businesses, James said, “We almost hit rock bottom simply because we couldn’t compete with the bigger guys. We went off to this conference and we came back and said we’re going to change the direction of the business. We opened up our first laundry mat. The laundry mat Downtown worked well for the first two years but then we realised that we were uneven in numbers that we wanted to fit in our business plans so we went back to the drawing board again and we built another store on the Millennium Highway.” Meantime, James said that one of our major issues locally is that we live in an era where it is a tendency to hear no more than finding a way to say yes.
“I mean that with our governments it is difficult for a local to obtain concessions and with the banks when it comes to financing, lucky enough for us we did all of our financing in house; but if you were to think of an idea or any business idea to do and would work, will the government support me, there is a high tendency to hear no and will the bank support me, there is even higher tendency to hear no,” James said. “My beliefs were simply finding an innovative idea and it will work. Now I have changed that because I have learned that we are now in an era where we don’t get that level of support from government or local landing institutions. I think what we do is go back to what Lapels did a few years ago, in house and develop.” James further stated that in order to create more opportunities Lapels TCI us working on developing an IT platform which will be available to everyone. “What we are working on next is developing an IT platform that allows you do a lot of stuff online. In developing this
Managing Director of LapelsTCI Dry Cleaners Elery James IT platform it is going to be available to others to purchase. That’s a next step for Lapels and what I am saying is that if we work on developing our own product, that way we will start promoting opportunities for youth.” James stressed that there are opportunities for youth in business but he believes the approach has to be different and persons have to look at different avenues to be successful. “Let us seek to find nontraditional methods of raising capital and let us look within ourselves to see how we can develop either what we have rather than as oppose to trying to cut that same dollar that is in circulation,” he concluded.

Survey on reinstatement of the most excellent right honorable Jags McCartney day The Turks and Caicos Islands Government is conducting a survey to gather feedback from the general public for the establishment of a public holiday in honour of the Most Excellent Right Honourable James Alexander George Smith (JAGS) McCartney, the first and only National Hero in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Hon. JAGS McCartney (30 June 1945 – 9 May 1980) served as the first TCI Chief Minister from 1976 to 1980; He is credited with helping to establish the ministerial form of government. He died while serving on May 9th 1980 and each year, he is remembered and celebrated
annually on National Hero’s Day – the last Monday in the month of May. The public holiday now known as National Hero’s Day was formally called JAGS Day in honour of TCI’s only National Hero. The holiday National Hero’s Day was originally established to honour and recognise all National Heroes in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Through the National Honours and Awards Ceremony held annually, there is a nomination category for The Order of National Hero which allows the public to nominate any person they deem worthy of such a prestigious title. This means that there could be other National
Heroes in the future. The Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands would like to hear public opinion on whether the Hon JAGS McCartney should be recognized and honoured separately, with a designated day set aside for him alone. Commissioner Clayton Been, Pastor Alces Dor, Claudia Been-Munnings of Fortis TCI, Mark GreenwayDirectorate Human Resource TCG, Chairman -Cheryl Astwood-Tull, Dr. David Russell, CEO of Northern Ireland HRC, Stacy Cox- President of TCHTA, Kyle Smith President of Chamber of Commerce, Sabrina Green, Human Rights Director and Elery James Owner of Lapels TCI that are present here today and those that have partnered with the Commission since I’ve joined forces with them. In November 2018 myself and the Chairman of the Commission attended the United Nations forum for Human Rights. There was a vast majority of information that we took away from these meetings that we attended and as we returned to Turks and Caicos, so it was decided that we were going to hit the ground running and implement Business and Human Rights. I have been made to understand that this initiative has been on the table for some time, but I am pleased today to with the help of our commission and the capable staff of the Human Rights Commission we can
bring to you Business and Human Rights to the Turks and Caicos Islands.” She added: “Here is how this going to work, we are going to approach implementing Human Rights throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands, we will introduce a forum which will be led by businesses. I am saying to all companied here today that you can look for us to send invitations to you to the forum of Business in Human Rights which would be hosted by a respective company each Quarter. The Chairman of this committee will be made up from your liking on an annual basis. This training for business in Human Rights will be provided free of charge from our staff here at the Human Rights Commission and we will probably
bring in international persons to do more workshops with you and give more information,” Green explained. Green stressed that this is a great initiative and she is very pleased to know that Turks and Caicos is becoming more aware, knowledgeable and receptive of Business and Human Rights principles throughout TCI. She continued: “We are blessed that we don’t have these things that exist in Turks and Caicos, or do they suddenly exist. I am sure were are aware of some atrocities that take place within our domestic country whether it be from Grand Turk to Provo, there are some human rights violations that exist by businesses and we want to bring it to an end with the help of businesses here in Turks and Caicos Islands. We will create a fair, safer and human rights friendly work environment and by extension we will not only be changing your organization but also changing the country and the world one person at a time.” Human Rights are everyone’s basic rights and freedoms that protect us all and no one special group is more important than the other. They are based on dignity, fairness, equality and respect. The global relationship between Human Rights and business has been developing for many years but has come to fruition over the last decade as more and larger businesses have recognized the benefits of supporting human rights in light of the changing attitudes and opinions of the public to which these businesses serve.

Managing Sunburn By Dr. Marsha Barnett We are about to enter the summer period and although its hot year-round on island, the summer brings with it an increase in temperatures, sun intensity and outdoor activities as kids are on vacation. This combination makes skin protection very important as the effects on the skin can be harsh and lead to both immediate and long- term consequences. What is Sunburn? Sunburn is excess reddening or swelling to the skin from excessive exposure to the sun’s rays, or more specifically the ultraviolet (UV) radiation that is emitted from the sun. At a cellular level, sunburn is associated with microscopic changes in the skin which leads to reduced immunity in the skin and premature aging. Who’s at Risk? Although anyone can get a sunburn, persons with light skin tones who tend to get red in the sun and hardly ever tan, are at greatest risk. Other factors can affect your tendency to burn. Being outdoors between 10am and 2pm when 65% of UV radiation reaches the earth, makes a sunburn more likely than when outdoors early morning or late afternoon. Also, a day with clear skies and little cloud cover increases the rays’ penetration. And although a day at the beach is relaxing, it may be stressful on your skin as the sun’s rays reflect from the surface of the sand and sea, almost doubling its effect on the skin. How Can I Avoid Getting Burnt? Sunburn is better prevented than treated.
Sun protection is your best defense against sunburn and other damaging effects of UV radiation. •Avoid sun exposure, especially between 10am to 2pm •Wear protective clothing, including wide-brimmed hats •Regularly apply sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 50+ •An oral food supplement containing Polypodium leucotomas, which is an extract from a plant, may provide additional oral photoprotection and reduce sunburn. What are the Signs and Symptoms of Sunburn? Signs and symptoms usually start after 2-6 hours of exposure. They may include redness, swelling to the skin, tenderness or warmth to touch, pain, blistering and even a fever. In severe cases of sunburn, severe skin burning may result in second-degree burns, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances and secondary infection. Treating Sunburn To help heal and soothe the skin, it is important to begin treating sunburn as soon as you notice it. The first thing you should do is get out of the sun. Once indoors, follow these tips: •Put a cold, damp towel on your skin. Do this for 10 or 15 minutes a few times every day until the redness and swelling settles. Take cool baths or showers and soon as you get out of the shower apply a moisturizer to help trap the water in your skin. This will help ease the dryness.

•Moisturize often. Never allow the skin to dry out and use a moisturizer that contains aloe vera or soy to help soothe sunburned skin. If a particular area feels especially uncomfortable, you may want to apply a hydrocortisone cream that you can buy without a prescription. •Take aspirin or ibuprofen if the sunburn really hurts. This will help reduce any swelling, redness and discomfort. •Drink extra water. Drinking extra water when you are sunburned helps prevent dehydration. •Seek medical care. If you feel generally unwell or have intense pain, blisters, fever or the area looks infected, see your doctor immediately. Your physician will be able to assess whether or not prescription steroid creams should be applied to the area and can prescribe antibiotics if indicated. Prompt treatment of severe burns also help reduce the risk of scarring. •Leave blisters alone. If your skin blisters, don’t pop them. Allow the blisters to heal and protect you from infection. It may also be a good idea to see your doctor if it’s in a large area as blisters tend to occur in moderate to severe Dr. Marsha Barnett sunburns. •Avoid the sun while the skin heals. It significant. Local Housing Crisis By Shaun Malcolm The current Providenciales housing shortage is projected to intensify into a full-blown housing crisis in the near future and there is currently no solution in sight. Expatriate workers imported into our country over the years as our tourism and associated construction industries have grown, have absorbed much of the local housing market and there have been no effective efforts by government or private industry to fill that housing void. There are several reasons for this lack of effective effort, not the least of which is the fact that locals have very limited access to investment capital. A significant number of new tourism development and construction projects are currently slated or approved for Providenciales that are likely to bring well over 1,000 new workers to Provo over the next few years, to fill employment positions that locals cannot currently fill. Where will these people live? If a developer cannot find affordable accommodations for their management and construction staff for the duration of the project, will they be forced to cancel the project? Will the lack of available housing and high cost of what is available discourage future investment or development? Working class Locals are being displaced, priced out of the rental housing market or forced to spend a disproportionate amount of their earnings on rent by the same growth that has fueled, and continues to fuel, what is currently our country’s life blood; our tourism and associated
construction industries. Maybe in the future, we might consider asking those who create this burden for working class Turks & Caicos Islanders, to contribute to its resolution. A developer constructing a resort hotel in New York, Chicago, San Francisco Los Angeles or any major city in the USA, is likely to be asked (required) by that city, as a condition for approval of the project, to make certain contributions or financial commitments to “off-set” the negative effects and the project’s impact on the local or surrounding community. Developers worldwide commonly incur, as conditions for approval of their projects, the costs associated with adding off ramps to interstate highways, streetlights to public streets, land for new schools and even, “art”. Working class Turks & Caicos Islands taxpayers are already co-funding many of these developments though customs & duty exemptions and other concessions or “no tax” commitments contained within many Development Agreements. The added cost of overcoming or absorbing a housing crisis created by developers in pursuit of profits that have already been enhanced by taxpayer concessions, seems an unfair financial burden to inflict upon locals. I have two possible and easily implemented options that could in time, substantially contribute to alleviating our housing shortage. I fear the current PDM strategy of doing nothing will either deter progress in generating new projects or will cost local Belongers more than they can bear.
Option #1: Government Inducement The Government would develop, package and approve (in advance) a collection of unprecedented financial concessions intended to induce developers or investors to construct and operate living accommodations specifically designed and designated for short or mid-term guest workers. These prepackaged and preapproved concessions for construction and operation of guest worker housing would be approved and available off-the-shelf for locals or outsiders to utilize in any location where their development meets planning and building codes. Option #2: Government Requirement The Government would contract for the design and development of a “signature” style, multi-floor residential apartment complex specifically designed and designated for short-term or mid-term guest workers. The benefits of a “signature” style model is that it can be replicated anywhere in the islands on any suitably sized multifamily residential site that meets with Planning approval, and the construction costs and operating expenses would be known and pre-established. We would then require developers or builders who import hundreds of workers that will burden and inflate our housing market, to participate in a ”financing program” intended to provide capital funding to locals for construction of guest worker housing to “offset” the impact of imported workers.
The current and projected shortage of residential real estate for guest workers on Providenciales will ensure that properly managed and structured projects will easily generate sufficient funds to repay the loans and developers or builders participating in that program would have little to no risk and the possibility of earning interest on the loaned money. Asking the developer or the builder of a two hundred and fifty or three hundred million dollar project to loan or cosign a loan for 3 to 5 million dollars to construct guest worker housing intended to offset the impact of importing large numbers of foreign workers, is not unreasonable. If structured properly, that social contribution can be made for almost no cost to the developer or builder. GOD Bless All,
Limpid English Learning - The uses of capital letters By Dian Kennedy Capitalization is the writing of a word with its first letter in uppercase and the remaining letters in lowercase. 1. Names or titles of people You always capitalize the first letters of a person’s first, middle and last names (John Quincy Adams), and you also capitalize suffixes (Jr., the Great, Princess of Power, etc.) and titles. Titles can be as simple as Mr., Mrs. or Dr., but they also apply to situations wherein you address a person by his or her position as though it were part of their name. For example, when we talk about President Obama, we are using his role as though it were a title not a job description. However, we wouldn’t capitalize the word president if it were not being used as a title. For example: “During the Civil War, Barack Obama was the president of the United States.” •As we’ve seen above you should capitalize the title when it comes immediately before someone’s name. •You don’t capitalize the job title if it is separated from the name, such as by a comma or the word “the.” 2. Names of mountains, mountain ranges, hills and volcanoes Again, we’re talking about specific places. The word mountain is not a proper noun, but Mount Everest is, because it’s the name of one specific mountain.
3. Names of bodies of water (rivers, lakes, oceans, seas, streams and creeks) The same rules that apply to mountain names also apply to water names. A river is just a river, but the Mississippi River is a proper noun and must be capitalized. 4. Names of buildings, monuments, bridges and tunnel. Man-made structures also often have names such as the White House, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Lincoln Tunnel, the Grand Turk Lighthouse. 5. Street names Capitalize both the actual name part of the name and the road part of the name; both are necessary for forming the entire name of the street. 6. Schools, colleges and universities All of the words in the name of the educational institution should be capitalized. For example, Harvard University, Long Bay High School, Iante Pratt Primary School. 7. Political divisions (continents, regions, countries, states, counties, cities and towns) When you refer the Midwest, the Pacific Northwest or the South as a region (as opposed to a compass direction), you capitalize them. Also, continents (South America), countries (Britain), states (Florida), counties (Howard County), cities (London) and towns (Grace Bay) get capitalized. 8. Titles of books, movies, magazines, newspapers, articles,
songs, plays and works of art Articles, prepositions, and conjunctions are not generally capitalized in title case, only principal words are. However, the first letter of a work of art is always capitalized even if it’s an article, preposition or conjunction. For example: The Glass Menagerie, A Few Good Men, Of Mice and Men. The last word of these titles always receives a capital too (Fools Rush In). 9. The first letter in a sentence Always capitalize the first letter of a sentence. If the sentence is a quotation within a larger sentence, capitalize it, but only if it’s a complete sentence. If it’s merely a phrase that fits neatly into the larger sentence, it does not require capitalization. Study the following two examples for clarification: •The waiter said, “My manager will be here shortly,” but he never came. •The waiter told us that his manager would “be here shortly,” but he never came. 10. The pronoun I It’s only necessary to capitalize other pronouns when they begin a sentence, but “I” is always capitalized. As promised last week, here are the answers for the troublesome pair exercise. 1. (lie, lay) 2. (waist, waste). 3. (weak, week) 4. (There, Their, They’re) (there, their, they’re) 5. (Hair, Here) 6. (loose, lose) 7. (than,
then) 8. (weather, whether) 9.(piece, peace) (piece, peace) 10. (fair, fare, fear) (fair, fare, fear), (fair, fare, fear) Word of the week Diligence (noun) The quality of working carefully and with a lot of effort. Example: She hoped that her diligence would be noticed at work as she was working for a raise. * Dian Kennedy holds a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with a specialisation in teaching English as second language. Together is better By Drexwell Seymour
More and more each day, we are becoming so self-centered, only caring about ourselves and ignoring the welfare and concerns of others. Some of us are so heartless that we have even neglected our own family members. Because we are self-centered, we are creating a selfish society, an unfriendly society and a wild-wild west society. If we only can come together, we will be better. We can be better if we come together. Together is better. Reduction in Crime We can reduce the crime levels because if we come together, we will care about each other and report the crime to keep our community safe.At least that is what I hope. Furthermore, if we come together, we can establish neighborhood watches in all communities and be our brothers and sisters keeper by informing them of what is happening in our community. If we come together and see our young people getting in any trouble, we will take it upon ourselves and let their family know rather than ignoring or walking away from it. Together is better. Union of Bright Minds If we come together and forgo of our allegiance to political parties, our country will be better. There are bright minds on both sides of the political
camps. Wouldn’t it be better if we come together and put our minds and hearts together developing a think tank to better our country? We are too busy trying to get credit for ourselves and our parties that we forget it is about our country and not our political parties. Merger of Businesses There are so many similar businesses in TCI and I know many persons have some personal family goals. Wouldn’t it be better rather than opening individual businesses, we merge and form larger businesses. Sometimes, we have to lower our prices to be competitive but wouldn’t it be better to keep a good price so you have healthy dividends at the year. However, the coming together of people is a major challenge. I personally try to get a group of people together after the economic conference but to date we have been unsuccessful and I know this is not the first attempt. Together is better. Harmony of the nationalities There are so many nationalities in TCI and naturally we stick with our own as we are comfortable with our race. However, this has created so much division, hatred and anger. Wouldn’t it better if we all come together no matter how nationality and work towards achieving the best for TCI. Despite whatever reason we are here for, our ultimate purpose is to provide service
to our customers and eventually TCI. If we keep fighting with each other, how can we come together to improve TCI. Together is better. Single Parent vs Co Parent I know there are perhaps divorce and separation in many homes, however, that does not mean the parents should neglect their role in the raising of their children. It is best that parents find ways and means to be co-parents to their children. I imagine being a single parent is not easy but there are many success stories. However, I believe two parents co-parenting a child is better for the development of a child Together is better. Team work In the work place, there is a lot of issues for many different reasons. However, if we come together as a team and realize we are working for the success of our company and their clients, are not together is due to our allegiance then perhaps our mindsets can shift. to political parties. Some of us say we Too many times we are busy trying to want to work together but really do drag each other down rather than trying not want it and as a result our country to pull each other up to work together. suffers. Together is better. Together we Some of us are in the work place and can transform our country from a self do not want to share knowledge and –centered country to a humanitarian work with others. Effective team work country. Two people working together will increase productivity and efficiency. is better than one person working Together is better. alone. I believe we must put aside our differences and come to the conclusion Conclusion that it is best we work together for One of the main reasons we together is better.

Rihanna’s lawsuit against her dad for using ‘Fenty’ is headed to a jury trial — even though it’s also his last name Rihanna and her father will be facing a jury trial in 2020 as part of an ongoing battle over the use of their last name, Fenty, in their respective business ventures. According to new court documents obtained by INSIDER, the multihyphenate star and Ronald Fenty, her father, are expected in court on June 23, 2020, at 8:30 a.m. Rihanna previously sued her father, as well as a man named Moses Perkins, in January for using the name Fenty to market their brand, Fenty Entertainment, The Blast reported. Rihanna trademarked the name, which she shares with her father, before launching her beauty brand in 2017. In recent years, Rihanna has used her last name to catapult multiple successful business ventures She first found inspiration in the moniker around 2017 when she launched her cosmetics brand, Fenty Beauty. The line was instantly praised for its wide shade range and versatile products. Prior to launching the brand, Rihanna trademarked her last name, INSIDER previously reported. The musician-turned-beautymogul then transferred her business skills to the fashion world. She created a successful partnership between Fenty and Puma, and later launched her own lingerie line called Savage x Fenty. The latter was widely praised for both its inclusive size range and its debut fashion show, where women with
Rihanna and her father, Ronald Fenty different skin tones and body types walked the runway. Rihanna most recently dove into the high-end world of designers by launching her own fashion house under LVMH. Products range in price from $190 to $810, and advertisements for the brand appear to be unedited. Rihanna’s father, Ronald, founded his own Fenty brand in 2017 According to The Blast, which previously said it obtained court documents, Ronald founded Fenty Entertainment in 2017, and then posed
as his daughter’s manager. He reportedly booked 15 concerts in Latin America, as well as another two in the United States, for $15 million and $400,000 respectively. Rihanna’s original lawsuit asked for a court injunction that would stop her father from using the name Fenty in business, as well as unspecified damages. Rihanna has previously spoken out against her father In 2009, Rihanna said during a Good Morning America interview that her father used to beat her mother.
“Domestic violence is not something that people want anybody to know, so she would just hide it in the house,” Rihanna said during the interview. “I always said to myself, ‘I’m never going to date somebody like my dad, never.’” According to the Independent, Rihanna also told Vogue in 2011 that her father told the press “a bunch of lies” after her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown was convicted of assaulting her. “You hear the horror stories about people going behind people’s backs and doing strange things, but you always think, ‘Not my family. My father would never do that to me,’” Rihanna reportedly told Vogue in 2011. “But my dad went to the press and just told them a bunch of lies,” she continued. “Because he hadn’t talked to me after that whole thing. He never called to find out how I was doing, if I was alive, nothing. He just never called. He went straight to the press and got a cheque. And now he does it again.” “It’s like, what do I even mean to him?” Rihanna told Vogue “It’s really strange. That’s the only word I can think of to describe it, because you grow up with your father, you know him, you are a part of him, for goodness sake! And then he does something so bizarre that I can’t begin to wrap my mind around it.” Representatives for Rihanna did not immediately reply to INSIDER’s request for comment.

LIFESTYLE Alcohol’s secondhand harms prevalent among U.S. women and men Just like cigarettes, alcohol creates secondhand harms, a new study suggests. Over a 12-month period, more than one in five women and nearly one in four men experienced some harm related to someone else’s drinking, in a study published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs. “One of the key take homes from this study is that harms due to other people’s drinking are extremely prevalent,” said coauthor Katherine Karriker-Jaffe, a senior scientist at the Alcohol Research Group at the Public Health Institute in Oakland, California. Considering that researchers only tracked people for a year “and that other points in life are not being captured in this study, this suggests it is a serious problem that needs attention,” she added. Women were more likely to be
harmed by a spouse, partner or family member, while men were more likely to be harmed by a stranger, Karriker-Jaffe and her colleagues found. The researchers used data from two nationally representative surveys: the 2015 National Alcohol’s Harm to Others Survey, which contained information on 2,830 adults, and the 2015 National Alcohol Survey, which contained data on 7,071 adults. Participants were interviewed by phone and received $10 or $20 for their time. For the current study, KarrikerJaffe and colleagues focused on the 8,750 survey participants who answered the questions on experiences with alcohol’s harm to others over the previous 12 months. Specifically, participants were asked if, in the last 12 months, they had experienced harms from a drinker including “being harassed,” “feeling threatened or afraid,” “having clothing
or belongings ruined,” having “property vandalized,” and “being pushed, hit or assaulted.” Overall, the researchers found, 21% of women and 23% of men had experienced at least one type of harm related to someone else’s drinking in the past year. That would work out to 53 million American adults experiencing at least one secondhand harm from alcohol each year, the researchers reported. The most common type of harm was harassment and threats, reported by 16% of men and women. Excluding this type of harm, the annual prevalence of any past-year harm was 13% for women and 15% for men. People were more likely to experience alcohol’s secondhand harms if they were younger than 25, black, drank heavily themselves, or were divorced, widowed or separated. Karriker-Jaffe hopes the study
Nonwhite patients get less pain relief in U.S. emergency rooms Black and Hispanic patients in U.S. emergency rooms are less likely to receive medication to ease acute pain than their white counterparts, a study suggests. Researchers examined data from 14 previously published studies of pain management in American emergency rooms (ERs) that altogether included 7,070 white patients, 1,538 Hispanic patients, and 3,125 black patients. Compared to white patients, black patients were 40% less likely to receive medication to ease acute pain and Hispanic patients were 25% less likely, the analysis found. “The reasons for these disparities are likely complex and multifold and may include factors such as implicit bias, language barriers, and cultural differences in the perception and expression of pain and institutional differences in ERs that serve mostly Black and Hispanic patients,” said Dr. Andrew Meltzer, senior author of the study and a researcher at George Washington University School of Medicine & Health Sciences in Washington, D.C. “Unrelieved pain can lead to a wide range of consequences such as growing distrust towards physicians and the medical community, economic burden from its debilitative effects,
and physical and emotional repercussions,” Meltzer said by email. “Given the current opioid epidemic, however, it remains unclear if more pain medicine should be a marker of higher quality care.” Black patients were 34% less likely to receive opioids for acute pain than white patients, and Hispanic patients were 13% less likely to get opioids for acute pain, researchers report in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine. And when patients had long bone fractures or acute pain from other types of traumatic injuries, black people were 41% less likely to get pain medication than white people. Among patients without fractures or trauma-related pain, black patients were again less likely than white patients to get pain relievers, but in this instance the difference was too small to rule out the possibility that it was due to chance. Because it wasn’t a controlled experiment, the study doesn’t prove that race or ethnicity directly impacts how ER clinicians treat acute pain. One limitation of the analysis is that researchers lacked data on how much pain patients experienced, and it’s possible
some differences might be due to differences in how much pain patients reported. And researchers also didn’t have data to see how health outcomes varied based on the amount or type of pain relief patients received. “Delayed pain relief may lead to poor healing or prolong the healing,” said Dr. Carmen Green, a professor of anesthesiology at the University of Michigan schools of medicine and public health in Ann Arbor. “In addition, there are psychological, implications ranging from suffering to fear all the way to PTSD,” Green, who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. “Let us not forget pain has been used to torture.” Emergency room clinicians may be choosing which patients get pain relief based on conscious, unconscious, and implicit bias as well as negative stereotypes based upon race, ethnicity, and class, Green said. “We tend to be more sympathetic to those who look like us,” Green said. “Overall, racial and ethnic minorities tend to receive lesser quality of care, have lesser quality health insurance, have decreased access to care, and experience diminished outcomes that lead to disparities.”
will spark changes in the availability of alcohol, such as earlier closing times for bars and liquor stores. The new study is a reminder of how large a problem drinking can be society-wide, said Dr. Antoine Douaihy, a professor of psychiatry and medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. “Everyone is consumed by the opioid crisis and there is a tendency to ignore the huge problems we have with alcohol,” Douaihy said. “In the United States, there’s a huge need to reduce that burden. And while it’s important to address the opioid crisis, let’s not forget about the burden of alcohol.” Even when there is a focus on alcohol, “it’s related to the harms to the person drinking, but not on the collateral damage,” Douaihy said. “Alcohol is still very, very problematic in the United States and it needs to be addressed very aggressively.”
Older women have higher heart disease risk with ‘apple’ shape Older women who are at a healthy weight may be more likely to develop heart disease when they carry excess fat around their midsection than when they store more fat in their hips and thighs, a new study suggests. While being overweight has long been linked to a higher risk of heart disease, the risks associated with excess fat for people with a body mass index (BMI) in the healthy range aren’t as clear, researchers note in the European Heart Journal. The current study involved 2,683 women who had already gone through menopause but didn’t have cardiovascular disease. Researchers followed half of the participants for at least 18 years. Overall, 291 women developed heart disease. Women with the most belly fat, or an “apple” shape, were 91 percent more likely to develop heart disease than women with the least amount of fat around their midsection. The risk was most pronounced for women who had lots of belly fat and very little fat on their thighs. These women were more than three times more likely to develop heart disease than women who had the opposite shape: fatter thighs and flatter stomachs. “An `apple’ shape has been associated with increased heart risk in previous studies, but it mostly refers to central obesity among people already have a weight problem,” said Qibin Qi, senior author of the study and a researcher at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York. “Our study found, for the first time, that among postmenopausal women with normal body mass index (BMI), elevated trunk fat (apple shape) is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, while elevated leg fat (pear shape) is associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease,” Qi said by email. Women who had the most pronounced “pear” shape, with more fat on their thighs, were 38 percent less likely to develop heart disease during the study than women with the least amount of fat on their upper legs. All of the women in the study had a healthy BMI ranging from 18.5 to 24.9. When women go through menopause, they can also experience changes in their body shape and metabolism as more fat gets stored around the organs rather than right under the skin, the study authors note. The distribution of body fat can be shaped by genetics, as well as by eating and exercise habits.

British Virgin Islands ranked best place to visit in Caribbean
A beach in the British Virgin Islands The best place to visit in the Caribbean is the British Virgin Islands (BVI), according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual ranking of the world’s best vacation destinations. The BVI — which includes islands like Virgin Gorda, Jost Van Dyke, Anegada and Tortola — is about a six-hour flight from New York City and about 12 hours from Los Angeles. The islands have everything from “stunning white beaches” to “unique national parks, ” Erin Shields, managing editor of travel at U.S. News & World Report, tells CNBC Make It. BVI is popular for people who love to be in the water, Shields says, whether it’s yachting, sailing, snorkeling or scuba diving. And travelers rave about the friendly locals and the beaches, says Shields, who adds that the islands offer a variety of accommodation options, from upscale resorts to vacation rentals. Richard Branson’s Necker Island, which costs $77,500 to rent a night, is located in the British Virgin Islands. Here are the top 10 places to visit in the Caribbean for 2019-20, according to U.S. News & World Report. 10. Barbados 9. St. Kitts & Nevis 8. Anguilla 7. Antigua 6. Cayman Islands 5. St. Vincent & The Grenadines 4. Turks & Caicos 3. U.S. Virgin Islands 2. St. Lucia 1. British Virgin Islands The top five destinations remain unchanged from the 2018-2019 ranking, “reinforcing the popularity of the destinations,” according to Shields. Ranked No. 2 on the list, St. Lucia appeals to couples with secluded hotels, says Shields. The U.S. Virgin Islands — including St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix — ranks No. 3. Americans do not need passports to travel there, and the islands have “incredible” beaches, says Shields. St. John even has a national park. Turks & Caicos, ranked No. 4, has plenty of family-friendly accommodations and is stunningly picturesque, famous for its white sand beaches and shockingly blue waters. St. Vincent & the Grenadines, coming it at No. 5, is a more “under-the-radar Caribbean getaway,” according to Shields, with plenty of beaches and boating and snorkeling opportunities. For its methodology, U.S. News & World Report analyzed more than 700 destinations, combining travelers’ opinions with editor and expert analysis, Shields tells CNBC Make It. Each destination is scored in 10 categories, “from sights, culture and food” to “value, adventure and nightlife,” Shields says, with a comprehensive evaluation of each destination. A “beach” score was also factored in for the Best Places to Visit in the Caribbean for 201920, according to Shields. Factors considered for the beach score include cleanliness, natural beauty, remoteness, sand and water quality, average days of sunshine and temperatures at the destination.

Her previous highest was US$1.5 million after she launched her campaign, for US president, earlier this year in Oakland, California, where she grew up. Harris, 54, whose father is Jamaican and mother is Indian, was elected in 2016 to the US Senate after serving as California’s attorney general from 2011 to 2017. Harris’s campaign said that, after Thursday night’s debate, 63 277 people made donations to the campaign, with almost 60 per cent being first-time donors. The average donation was US$30. Sir Hilary recognised for work in reparations Regional Headquarters, Kingston – Sheila Jackson Lee, American politician and Democratic Congresswoman for the US State of Texas, wasted no time at the beginning of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, in paying tribute to the Caribbean for its contribution. As leader of the process which brought the Reparations Bill to the floor of the Judiciary Committee, she expressed gratitude particularly to Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, historian, Vice-Chancellor of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and Chairman of the CARICOM Reparations Commission last Wednesday. Jackson Lee was speaking at the Capitol in Washington on the commemoration of Juneteenth, which marks a day of remembering the end of slavery in Texas. Her language was emphatic while thanking Sir Hilary for his expert leadership in the Caribbean and global movement over the past decade. By connecting the historic, Rastafariandriven grassroots movement to State leadership, and securing the support of CARICOM leaders and international development and civil rights bodies, Sir Hilary was thanked for inspiring the revival of the African-American movement at the highest levels of Government. It was fitting that he was urged to stand before the Subcommittee under the chairmanship of Congressman Nadler, as the significance of the moment was officially acknowledged. During the hearing, iconic actor, Danny Glover, also expressed in his testimony, gratitude to Sir Hilary, his friend, for facilitating his own global activist engagement in the reparations movement. Congresswoman Jackson Lee later thanked Sir Hilary again at a town hall meeting which followed the Subcommittee hearing, where he was the keynote speaker. She acknowledged her gratitude to him for framing the conversation within CARICOM in a way that is developmental and not divisive. She further recognised the role that Caribbean luminaries have always played in the progressive politics of America – from the pan-African role of Marcus Garvey, to the reparations discourse of Sir Hilary himself. US Democrat, representing New Jersey, Senator Cory Booker also gave testimony at the hearing and was first to do so. Sir Hilary, standing in the Chamber, symbolically under the portrait of former Congressman John Conyers, his long serving mentor and father of the congressional movement, assured Booker that the CARICOM Reparations Commission will be fully available to assist sponsors of the Bill as it is piloted through the House to the Senate.

The company was awarded a $20 million contract to carry out rehabilitation work on a runway and taxiway at Lynden Pindling International Airport. Bahamas Hot Mix submitted the most competitive bid of the four companies that bid, according to officials. The company was also awarded three contracts for water improvement projects on Long Island and Crooked Island. Public Works Minister Desmond Bannister defended the decision last week, saying the other bids were disqualified for not meeting the requirements of the Caribbean Development Bank — a determination that was made by an independent firm out of Jamaica. Symonette insisted that none of the Bahamas Hot Mix contracts came before Cabinet for discussion. He said he had no conversations with anyone about those contracts prior to their award. “One of them I read about in the newspaper for the first time,” he said. “The other one I talked to my son about and said, ‘Look, in the future just give me a heads up.’ So, I have no involvement in any of those contracts.” Late last year, Symonette took a beating after the government decided to lease space in the Town Centre Mall — owned by Symonette and his brother — to relocate the General Post Office. Declaring his interest in Parliament was not enough to quiet the controversy that accompanied that decision. Symonette said yesterday that lies and misinformation are being spread against him on social media.
Russian warships in the Caribbean A fleet of Russian warships traveled through the Caribbean Sea and docked in Cuba on June 24 in the latest example of Russia’s increasing military influence in the periphery of the United States. The four-vessel fleet is led by Admiral Gorshkov, Russia’s most advanced and modern warship. The ships left Russia in February and made stops in Africa, Sri Lanka and China before crossing the Pacific to Ecuador. The fleet sailed through the Panama Canal on June 17, then crossed through the Caribbean to Havana’s harbor—just 90 miles from the southernmost part of Florida. The Russian government has not announced the purpose of the visit to Cuba, but Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on June 24 that current tension between the United States and Russia could create a scenario similar to the Cold War Cuban

Caribbean drought will continue, say experts The Barbados-based Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) Friday said that drought conditions in the Caribbean will continue in several countries for July to September this year. In its latest Caribbean Climate Outlooks publication, the CIMH said that the situation is due in part to a weak El Niño. It said Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao (ABC Islands) Belize and the Lesser Antilles will continue to experience drought situations and that “a progressive increase in wet spells are expected throughout the region, however possibly fewer than in most wet seasons. “The spells may bring some level of drought relief, but also concern for flooding. Peak heat stress will likely be experienced between August and September, especially during heatwaves. Episodes of Saharan dust incursion are expected,” CIMH reported. It said that as of June 1, severe, or worse, drought has developed in northern Belize, eastern extremities of Cuba, coastal French Guiana, the northern Leewards, western parts of Trinidad on the shorter term, and in Barbados, southern Belize, southernmost, Dominican Republic , French Guiana, southwestern Haiti, and Martinique and Trinidad on the long term. Long term concerns are also evolving in Dominica, French Guiana, Martinique, Sint Maarten and Trinidad, and is possible in Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. Barbados, most of Belize, northern Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, St. Lucia, Tobago and the United States Virgin Islands. CIMH said that in recent months, seasurface temperature (SSTs) in the tropical Pacific maintained a weak El Niño level with SST anomalies about 0.5-1°C above average and that is expected to be maintained during the forecast period. “”n El Niño tends to tilt the odds to warmer and drier conditions with less shower activity in most parts of the Caribbean. Note, however, that an El Niño maintaining into December could lessen these impacts during the latter part of the season in the northwestern part of the region.” CIMH said that during the period, October to December, indications are that drought in affected areas may lessen with favourable rains forecasted for the last three months of 2019 in the Caribbean, which may be wetter than usual in the ABC Islands, Belize, Cayman, Hispaniola, and eastern Greater Antilles, but possibly drier than usual in Suriname and French Guiana. “Extreme wet spells, whether or not associated with tropical cyclones, are a main feature of this period, with enhanced concern for flash flood potential in any part of the region. Heat stress will likely decrease after October, while episodes of Saharan dust incursions should be infrequent,” CIMH added.
Guyana listed as world’s fastest growing economy The world’s second largest stock market NASDAQ, has named Guyana as the fastest growing economy in the world. In a report, NASDAQ said that with a projected growth rate of 16.3 per cent during the four-year period 2018-2021, Guyana is the fastest growing economy in the world. NASDAQ says that with a GDP size of $3.63 billion (2018 Rank: 160), a growth rate of 4.1 per cent in 2018 and 4.6 per cent in 2019, Guyana’s economy is expected to grow by 33.5 per cent and 22.9 per cent in 2020 and 2021 respectively. The report added that Guyana is a middle-income country that has an abundance of resources. The report also pointed to the ExxonMobil discoveries in Guyana and the income that will come to the country when oil production begins next year. Exxon is expected to start producing up to 120 000 barrels of oil per day from the Liza Phase 1 development next year and the country is projected to be among the world’s largest percapita oil producers by 2025.

Dismissing criticism, Trump presides over July 4th holiday with military show
U.S. President Donald Trump will preside over July Fourth Independence Day celebrations on Thursday with a speech about patriotism and a show of military might that critics say is politicizing an important holiday and wasting taxpayer money. Trump, a Republican who admired flashy displays of national pride and military strength put on by France, has dismissed concerns about the expense and militaristic overtones of the Washington event, which will take place in front of the Lincoln Memorial and feature fireworks, a flyover by Air Force One and a display of tanks. Democrats charge the president with staging a campaign rally. Though the White House has said his remarks would not be political in nature, the president has a history of veering off script with sharp partisan attacks even at events that are not meant to be overtly political. “People are coming from far and wide to join us today and tonight for what is turning out to be one of the biggest celebrations in the history of our Country,” Trump tweeted on Thursday
morning. He is set to give a speech at 6:30 p.m. ET (2230 GMT), followed by fireworks later in the evening. Asked earlier this week if he could give a speech that would represent all Americans, he said he thought he could and then launched into an attack on Democrats’ policies on healthcare and taxes. Flights will be suspended at nearby Reagan National Airport from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. ET (2215 to 2345 GMT) and then again later in the evening for the festivities. “Perhaps even Air Force One will do a low & loud sprint over the crowd,” Trump tweeted, encouraging people to get there early. Some at the White House were worried about the crowd size, according to an administration official. Trump fumed about reports in 2017 that the crowd at his inauguration ceremony on the National Mall in front of the U.S. Capitol was smaller than it was for President Barack Obama. The Lincoln Memorial is at the opposite end of the monument-covered Mall. Republican political groups were given prime tickets for Trump’s

about him and then getting tickets in the hands of wealthy donors for the Republican Party. What a waste of money,” Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro said on CBS “This Morning” on Wednesday. Fellow Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders also weighed in with criticism: “This is what authoritarians do: @realDonaldTrump is taking $2.5 million away from our National Park Service to glorify himself with a spectacle of military tanks rolling through Washington,” he wrote in a tweet. Trump downplayed the expense. “The cost of our great Salute to America tomorrow will be very little compared to what it is worth. We own the planes, we have the pilots, the airport is right next door (Andrews), all we need is the fuel,” he posted on Twitter on Wednesday. “We own the tanks and all. Fireworks are donated by two of the greats. Nice!” Andrews is the name of a nearby military base. The July 4th holiday celebrates the U.S. founders’ declaring independence from Britain in 1776.
Tehran fumes as Britain seizes Iranian oil tanker over Syria sanctions British Royal Marines seized a giant Iranian oil tanker in Gibraltar on Thursday for trying to take oil to Syria in violation of EU sanctions, a dramatic step that drew Tehran’s fury and could escalate its confrontation with the West. The Grace 1 tanker was impounded in the British territory on the southern tip of Spain after sailing around Africa, the long route from the Middle East to the mouth of the Mediterranean. Iran’s Foreign Ministry summoned the British ambassador to voice “its very strong objection to the illegal and unacceptable seizure” of its ship. The diplomatic gesture lifted any doubt over Iran’s ownership of the vessel, which flies a Panama flag and is listed as managed by a company in Singapore. WORLD NEWS Australia winces at footage of child falling between train and platform Australia released hair-raising security images of a child falling between a train station platform and a train, as a reminder to parents to stay vigilant during the busy school holidays. A train stops at a Sydney station, and a woman pushes a stroller toward the open doors, in the closed-circuit television pictures. As she prepares to lift the stroller onto the train, the child walking beside her plunges into the gap between the woman and the train. The woman then raises her arm to draw the attention of station staff, while passersby pull the apparently unharmed child back onto the platform. “A simple thing such as holding your child’s hand when moving around stations and boarding a train can help prevent them from being seriously injured or worse,” Andrew Constance, the transport minister of New South Wales, said in a statement. The woman’s face was blurred in the footage and a government spokesman said she could not immediately be reached for comment. The clip was widely shared on social media, with a post by Nine Entertainment Co Holdings Ltd’s drawing 1,600 comments and 1,100 “shares”. In another clip released by the government, a child falls face first after tripping in the gap between train and station while disembarking. A third shows a young person running down the station stairs, only to trip and fall down several steps before hitting a handrail post. More than half of train station accidents on the 178-station Sydney Trains network take place at the three busiest stations in the city’s central business district, Chief Executive Howard Collins said. “The most important message I’d like to share with parents is please don’t rush around stations or platforms,” he added. In 2010, a 15-month-old boy escaped with only minor cuts and bruises when an approaching train hit his stroller, which had rolled over the edge of the platform.
Israel will be destroyed in 30 minutes if America attacks Iran Israel will be destroyed in half an hour if the United States attacks Iran, a senior Iranian parliamentarian said on Monday, according to the semi-official Mehr news agency. Weeks of tensions culminated last month in U.S. President Donald Trump’s last-minute decision to call off planned strikes on Iran after Tehran downed a U.S. drone. Washington also accused Iran of being behind attacks on ships in the Gulf, which Tehran denies. “If the U.S. attacks us, only half an hour will remain of Israel’s lifespan,” Mojtaba Zolnour, the chairman of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy commission said on Monday, according to Mehr.
Congress expands probe of White House personal email use Top aides in President Donald Trump’s White House, including his daughter Ivanka Trump and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, will come under increased scrutiny for their use of personal emails and other unofficial messaging to conduct government affairs, a congressional oversight chairman said. U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings, the Democratic chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, said the panel would begin its own review of emails and other communications by the White House that he said violated federal records law. “The purpose of this investigation is to determine why White House officials used non-official email accounts, texting services and encrypted applications for official business,” Cummings wrote to White House Counsel Pat Cipollone. Lawmakers will look at why records sent or received by non-official accounts were not forwarded to official accounts within 20 days as legally required, as well as whether there was a topic White House officials wanted to conceal, he said. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Trump pilloried his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, in the 2016 presidential campaign for her use of a private

House panel to hold hearing on treatment of migrant children The House Oversight Committee has scheduled a hearing next week on the separation and treatment of immigrant children and has launched an investigation into reports of offensive Facebook posts by border patrol officers, the panel said on Tuesday. Representative Elijah Cummings, the committee’s Democratic chairman, said the panel had invited Acting Secretary Kevin McAleenan from the Department of Homeland Security and Acting Commissioner Mark Morgan from U.S. Customs and Border Protection to testify on July 12. “The Trump administration’s actions at the southern border are grotesque and dehumanizing,” Cummings said. “There seems to be open contempt for the rule of law and for basic human decency.” The panel said the hearing would look into reports that unaccompanied children, many of whom were separated from their families, are being held in overcrowded, filthy conditions. It will also examine reports that current and former Border Patrol agents have posted racist, sexist and xenophobic comments on Facebook. “The committee needs to hear directly from the heads of these agencies as soon as possible in light of the almost daily reports of abuse and defiance,” Cummings said, urging the two acting agency

Vatican defends confessional secret as sexual abuse crisis stings The Vatican reaffirmed Catholic teaching that priests cannot reveal what they learn in confession, in an apparent response to moves in Australia and elsewhere to force them to do so in cases of sexual abuse. A document from the Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary, which deals with issues of the sacrament of confession, said no government or law could force clergy to violate the seal “because this duty comes directly from God.” The document, which did not mention any countries or the sexual abuse crisis, complained of a “worrying negative prejudice against the Catholic Church”. Most countries’ legal systems respect the religious right of a Catholic priest not to reveal what he has learned in confession, similar to attorney-client privilege. But the sexual abuse crisis that has embroiled the Catholic Church around the world has seen this right challenged more frequently. In Australia, an inquiry into child abuse recommended that the country introduce a law forcing religious leaders to report child abuse, including priests told of it during confession. So far, two of Australia’s eight states have introduced laws making it a crime for priests to withhold information about abuse heard in confession. Others are still considering their response. In May, the California state senate passed a bill to require the seal of confession to be broken

British Opposition leader calls for independent probe into report he is ‘too frail’ to be UK PM A general view of St. Peter’s square as Pope Benedict XVI conducts a special mass in Vatican City in this October 21, 2012 file photograph if a priests learns of or suspects sexual abuse while hearing the confession of a fellow priest or a colleague such as a Church worker. Church leaders in both the United States and Australia have opposed such laws and the document backed them up unequivocally. “Any political action or legislative initiative aimed at breaking the inviolability of the sacramental seal would constitute an unacceptable offence against the (freedom of the Church),” the document said. “(The Church) does not receive its legitimacy from individual States, but from God; it (breaking the seal) would also constitute a violation of religious freedom, legally fundamental to all other freedoms, including
the freedom of conscience of individual citizens, both penitents and confessors,” it said. Victims advocates said the lifting of the seal of confession, even partially, was drastic but necessary under the circumstances. “As a Catholic, I too am shaken by incursions on the seal of confession. But it’s the leaders of the Catholic church, not civil society, that have gotten us to this point,” said Anne Barrett Doyle, co-director of the U.S.based abuse tracking group BishopAccountability.org. “Secret church files made public in Australia and the United States reveal many instances of confession being used to absolve an abuser, allowing him to remain in ministry and re-offend,” she told Reuters in an email.
Judge blocks Trump policy keeping asylum-seekers locked up A federal judge in Seattle on Tuesday blocked a Trump administration policy that would keep thousands of asylum-seekers locked up while they pursue their cases, saying the Constitution demands that such migrants have a chance to be released from custody. U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman ruled Tuesday that people who are detained after entering the country illegally to seek protection are entitled to bond hearings. Attorney General William Barr announced in April that the government would no longer offer such hearings, but instead keep them in custody. It was part of the administration’s efforts to deter a surge of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. Pechman said that as people who have entered the U.S., they are entitled to the Fifth Amendment’s dueprocess protections, including “a
longstanding prohibition against indefinite civil detention with no opportunity to test its necessity.” Immigrant rights advocates including the American Civil Liberties Union and the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project sued to block the policy, which was due to take effect July 15. “The court reaffirmed what has been settled for decades: that asylum-seekers who enter this country have a right to be free from arbitrary detention,” Matt Adams, legal director of the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, said in a written statement. “Thousands of asylum-seekers will continue to be able to seek release on bond, as they seek protection from persecution and torture.” The Justice Department did not immediately return an email seeking comment, but the government was expected to
quickly appeal the decision, as Pechman noted in her order. For the past 50 years, the government has given asylumseekers bond hearings before immigration judges where they can argue that they should be released because they are not flight risks and pose no threat to the public, the immigrant rights groups told the court. That gives the asylumseekers an opportunity to reunite with relatives in the U.S. and to find lawyers to handle their asylum claims, making them more likely to succeed. The new policy would end that practice, keeping between 15,000 and 40,000 immigrants in custody for six months or more without requiring the government to show that their detentions are justified, the groups argued. Typically, close to half of asylumseekers who are granted bond hearings are released from custody.

British opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, 70, called for an independent investigation into a Times newspaper report which cited unidentified senior officials as saying they were concerned he was too frail to be prime minister. “This matter has inevitably undermined confidence in the principle of civil service neutrality, which is integral to the healthy functioning of our democracy,” Corbyn wrote to Cabinet Secretary Mark Sedwill, head of the civil service. “I would urge you to ensure that there is a speedy and thorough independent investigation, rather than one carried out by the Cabinet Office,” Corbyn wrote. Prime Minister Theresa May’s spokesman said it was the Cabinet Office’s role to investigate. “The Cabinet Office is investigating ... if we are able to identify an individual responsible we will take disciplinary action,” he told reporters. “We are taking the matter extremely seriously. The civil service is responsible for looking into any potential breaches of the civil service code and this is no different.” The Times reported last month that senior civil servants have become increasingly concerned about Corbyn’s health and warned that he might be forced to stand down as Labour leader because he was not up to the job “physically or mentally”. “The idea that civil servants should be briefing newspapers against an elected politician, against a prospective government is something that should be very concerning to a lot of people,” Corbyn said on July 1 of the story. Corbyn has said he is “a very fit, a very healthy and very active person.”
Fire kills 14 Russian sailors aboard deep-sea submersible Fire broke out on one of the Russian navy’s deep-sea research submersibles, and toxic fumes from the blaze killed 14 sailors aboard, Russia’s Defense Ministry said Tuesday, although it released few details about the disaster or the vessel involved. The Defense Ministry did not say how many sailors were aboard the vessel during Monday’s fire, whether there were any survivors or if it was submerged at the time. But Russian media reported it was the country’s most secret submersible, a nuclearpowered vessel designed for sensitive missions at great depths. President Vladimir Putin, who came under criticism for his handling of the Kursk nuclear submarine disaster in 2000 that killed 118 sailors, canceled a scheduled appearance and immediately summoned Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu for a briefing on the blaze, which was under investigation. The fire occurred while the submersible was measuring sea depths in Russia’s territorial waters, the ministry said, adding that the vessel also is used for studying the seabed. Russia’s RBC online news outlet and the Novaya Gazeta newspaper identified it as the nuclearpowered AS-12 Losharik. The vessel is the most advanced Russian submersible, under a heavy veil of secrecy, and it is believed to have entered service in 2010. It is named after a Soviet-era animated cartoon horse that is made up of small spheres. In 2012, the Losharik was involved in research intended to prove Russia’s claim on the vast Arctic seabed. It collected samples from the depth of 2,500 meters (8,202 feet), according to official statements at the time. Regular submarines can typically dive to depths of up to 600 meters (2,000 feet).

Disappointed Venezuelans lose patience with Guaido as Maduro hangs on Four days before Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido launched a military uprising in a bid to oust President Nicolas Maduro, he told supporters at a rally outside the capital, Caracas: “In the next few days, we’ll decide our destiny.” The 35-year-old, who had risen to national prominence three months before, finished his speech with his usual rallying cry to Venezuelans desperate for the end of 20 years of Socialist rule: “We’re on track!” Yet after the April 30 insurrection swiftly unraveled, with troops remaining in their barracks and key government officials refusing to change sides, many Venezuelans aren’t so sure. Interviews with more than two dozen people across Venezuela - as well as fresh polling data - suggest that many people have grown frustrated by the slow pace of change amid the hardships of daily life. Several said they were losing hope that Guaido could dislodge Maduro. “We’re on track but it’s the wrong track,” said Rafael Narvaez, a taxi driver in the western coastal city of Punto Fijo. Narvaez said he had been full of hope on April 30 when he saw Guaido appear with military officers in a video posted on Twitter saying it was time to rise up against Maduro.
Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido talks to the media during a news conference before a meeting with representatives of Venezuela’s private industrial sector in Caracas, Venezuela June 26, 2019 “I thought that finally the moment had come to recover our country,” Narvaez, 43, said. “Now I’m disappointed.” Analysts said the most likely outcome now is for the status quo to continue as Maduro gains confidence that his crackdown on the opposition will go relatively unpunished and Guaido seeks a new strategy to keep a weary public energized. When Guaido, the speaker of the National Assembly, proclaimed a rival presidency in January in a bold challenge to Maduro, he injected new hope into Venezuela’s fragmented
opposition. With most Western nations saying Maduro’s reelection last year was rigged, Guaido cited the constitution to announce an interim presidency until fresh elections could be held. Washington backed him and imposed tough new sanctions on Venezuela’s oil industry, with the aim of forcing Maduro and his allies from power. Maduro, who took office in 2013 following the death of his political mentor, Hugo Chavez, has overseen an economic collapse that has left swaths of the once-wealthy country without reliable access to power, water, food
and medicines. More than 4 million Venezuelans have emigrated and the Organization of American States warned this week that figure could double by the end of next year. Guaido has gained control of some Venezuelan assets in the United States, appointed diplomats overseas and unveiled an economic plan to rebuild Venezuela. But his promises of amnesty have failed to sway the armed forces, which remain loyal to Maduro. The opposition’s momentum has slowed since the April 30 uprising. Attendance at Guaido’s public rallies has dropped and the opposition has held no major protests since then. A march called for Friday will be a litmus test for Guaido’s support. Maduro, who retains the loyalty of key allies Russia and China, has branded Guaido a U.S. puppet. With a swift removal of Maduro not in sight, the opposition says it is knuckling down for a more protracted campaign and seeking to build a grassroots organization to press for elections without Maduro. Yon Goicoechea, a member of Guaido’s policy team, acknowledged there was “fatigue” among Venezuelans. “We have to fight against demobilization and despair,” he said. “We Venezuelans have to keep consistent in our support for Guaido and be patient.”
Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez describes ‘horrifying’ conditions at Texas migrant facility Controversy broadsided the embattled U.S. Border Patrol agency Monday, as a high-profile U.S. Congresswoman touring detention facilities called conditions “horrifying” and as current and former agency staffers were alleged to have posted offensive comments about the lawmaker and migrants on a private Facebook page. Migrants held at a border patrol station in Texas were subjected to psychological abuse and told to drink out of toilets, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said after a visit with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to the main border patrol facility in El Paso. The tour, which also included a visit to a Clint, Texas, facility, followed reports from a government watchdog that immigrants were being housed in overcrowded and unsanitary conditions. “After I forced myself into a cell with women and began speaking to them, one of them described their treatment at the hands of officers as “psychological warfare,” Ocasio-Cortez, a first-term New York Democrat, wrote on Twitter after leaving the El Paso
border patrol station. “This has been horrifying so far.” U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), which oversees Border Patrol, did not immediately respond to a request for comment on her statements about the visit. The Border Patrol also came under fire on Monday following a report by the non-profit news site ProPublica that offensive content had been posted on a private Facebook group for current and former CBP officers. Posts included jokes about the deaths of migrants and sexually explicit comments referencing Ocasio-Cortez, the news outlet said. “This isn’t about ‘a few bad eggs,’” Ocasio-Cortez tweeted in response to the ProPublica report. “This is a violent culture.” CBP condemned the Facebook group and acknowledged that it may include a number of the agency’s employees. Matthew Klein, Assistant Commissioner of CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility, called the

Ajmal returned to Pakistan from Saudi Arabia, where he worked as a tailor, 25 days ago intending to carry out the killings, he said. Mehmood said Ajmal confessed
to the killings. “This is clearly an honor killing. He saw a picture of his wife with another man and believed she was having an affair,” Mehmood said. “He does not repent his actions.” In addition to killing his wife and their two children, Ajmal also killed his three sisters-in-law, two of their children, and his mother-in-law. Ajmal and his father, who was with him at the time of the murder, are both in custody and have been charged with murder, Mehmood said. Police are searching for his brother, who is also believed to be involved.
The deaths add to the hundreds of women and girls killed in Pakistan each year, according to human rights groups, by family members angered at the perceived damage to their honor, which may involve eloping, fraternizing with men or any infringement of conservative values regarding women. Kiran’s brother Ali Raza told Reuters that Ajmal and his sister were having marital problems and she had recently moved back to Pakistan and was living with her family. “I am left with just my father, my whole family is gone,” he said. Mehmood said Ajmal has not
been assigned an attorney yet and Reuters was unable to contact any of his family members for a comment. Pakistan adopted legislation against honor killings in 2016, introducing tough punishment and closing a legal loophole that allowed killers to walk free if pardoned by family members. Police in Pakistan’s most populous province of Punjab, where honor crimes have been rampant, said recently that the number of such killings had fallen since the law was introduced but rights groups estimate that nearly 1,000 such killings take place annually.

Bankrupt Puerto Rico hit with new spending curbs by oversight board
Puerto Rico’s federally created “we found a way to pay for it.” fiscal oversight board on Monday Puerto Rico lawmakers on imposed a fiscal 2020 budget on the Sunday approved an approximately bankrupt U.S. commonwealth that for $9.6 billion general fund budget that the first time limits spending choices includes roughly $500 million in by its government, according to the pension and healthcare payments board’s executive director. previously paid by cash-strapped Natalie Jaresko said the municipalities and public corporations, $20.2 billion budget for the central as well as money for bonuses. government that includes $9.1 billion “Those monies are not in the of general fund spending complies with budget nor the certified fiscal plan,” the fiscal plan for the island, which Jaresko said, adding that municipalities filed a form of bankruptcy in 2017 to must seek ways to increase their own restructure about $120 billion of debt revenue. and pension obligations. Christian Sobrino, the “It reflects the priorities of that governor’s fiscal oversight board fiscal plan - public safety, healthcare, representative, said the government education and the continued right- is analyzing the board’s budget and sizing of the government,” Jaresko told “reviewing the mechanisms that will reporters. be used to implement public policy She added that the budget for measures that the board has sought to the fiscal year that began on Monday impede through the budget.” contains new “detailed” spending levels Last year, Rossello sued the that will prohibit the government from board over its imposed budget, arguing moving money around to pay for things the panel exceeded its powers. U.S. Judge not in the fiscal plan like employees’ Laura Taylor Swain, who presides over Christmas bonuses. the island’s bankruptcy process, ruled Governor Ricardo Rossello told in August that the board has broad and reporters the board did not include the exclusive authority over Puerto Rico’s bonus payment in last year’s budget but budget under the federal PROMESA Act,
Locked out of China, U.S. pork producers sniff out new buyers U.S. hog farmers lost hundreds of millions of dollars in export sales to China and Mexico after President Donald Trump launched his trade wars last year. But the sector has largely offset those massive losses by cobbling together new customers in smaller markets from Colombia to Vietnam, according a Reuters analysis of data from the U.S. Meat Export Federation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). As American farmers pin their hopes for a trade deal on Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s agreement to restart talks at last week’s G20 summit, the pork industry stands out for its success in avoiding the sharp sales reductions that have slammed other U.S. farm sectors, such as soybeans and sorghum. Overall, U.S. pork exports fell 3.9% by volume and 8.4% by value from May 2018 to April 2019, compared to a year earlier, according to data compiled by the U.S. Meat Export Federation. China increased its tariff on U.S. pork in April of last year and again in July, when it imposed tariffs on soybeans. By comparison, total U.S. soybean exports dropped 13.7% by volume and 19.2% by value during the same period, while total sorghum exports dropped 72.8% by volume and 73.6% by value, according to the USDA. The boom in small-market sales has “been a savior for the pork industry,” Iowa hog farmer Dean Meyer said. The industry’s salvation has roots in global marketing efforts that began more than a decade before the U.S-China trade dispute, as American hog farmers and their trade groups sought to take advantage of a boom in protein demand linked rising incomes in emerging markets. They visited importers and grocery stores in developing countries, taught buyers how U.S. pork is produced and touted its quality to chefs and bloggers around the world, according to participants in the trade trips. Those efforts took years to pay off.
Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello speaks during a Facebook live broadcast in the library of the governor’s mansion, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, January 24, 2018 although it cannot demand changes in law. Faced with similar differences between the board and the elected government over this year’s budget, Jaresko said on Monday that “there’s no reason to go to court” given Swain’s ruling.
Meanwhile, the board said it sued certain fuel suppliers of the island’s bankrupt power utility, or PREPA, over the weekend to “recover potentially billions of dollars in fraudulent payments,” related to the delivery of substandard fuel between 2002 and 2015, according to statement.
Rich get richer, everyone else not so much in record U.S. expansion Last month Pink Floyd frontman David Gilmour sold his guitar collection for $21.5 million, including one piece his famed “Black Strat” Fender Stratocaster - that went for nearly $4 million to the owner of the U.S. National Football League’s Indianapolis Colts. The “Money” singer set a musical instrument sales record in the charity auction, marking yet another milestone for a booming market just weeks after New York-based art dealer Sotheby’s Holdings (BID.N), auctioned Claude Monet’s “Meules” for $110.7 million, the most ever for an Impressionist painting. And it is not just instruments or paintings in high demand among the world’s billionaire set. Auction houses themselves now appear to be prized vanity purchases: Just a few days before the Pink Floyd auction, Franco-Israeli cable magnate Patrick Drahi, whose firm Altice earned significant money in the United States, made a $3.7 billion bid for Sotheby’s, which had just hosted the Monet sale. Welcome to the longest U.S. economic expansion in history, one perhaps best characterized by the excesses of extreme wealth and an everwidening chasm between the unfathomably rich and everyone else. Indeed, as the expansion entered its record-setting 121st month on Monday, signs of a
new Gilded Age are all over. Big-money deals are getting bigger, from corporate mergers and acquisitions, to individuals buying luxury penthouses, sports teams, yachts and all-frills pilgrimages to the ends of the earth. And while these deals grab headlines, there is a deeper trend at work. The number of billionaires in the United States has more than doubled in the last decade, from 267 in 2008 to 607 last year, according to UBS. “The rich have gotten richer and they’ve gotten richer faster,” said John Mathews, Head of Private Wealth Management and Ultra High Net Worth at UBS (UBSG.S) Global Wealth Management. “The drive or the desire for consumption has just gone upscale.” But there are also signs of struggle and stagnation at lowerincome levels. The wealthiest fifth of Americans hold 88% of the country’s wealth, a share that has grown since before the crisis, Federal Reserve data through 2016 shows. Meanwhile, the number of people receiving federal food stamps tops 39 million, below the peak in 2013 but still up 40% from 2008 even though the country’s population has only grown about 8%. Still, a decade ago, this kind of growth was not thought possible. The U.S. financial system was in a shambles and people feared bank failures could permanently undermine capitalism. Policymakers
scrambled to stabilize markets and boost asset prices when U.S. housing markets unraveled. They did less to tackle income and wealth inequality. Now, many of the signs of mega-wealth that preceded that financial crisis are once again on display. The examples are big and small. The cost of a dinner at the French Laundry, the chic California restaurant, is up 35% to $325 per person, from $240 10 years ago, beating inflation by nearly 20%. Undergraduate tuition at Ivy League mainstay Columbia University is a hair under $60,000 a year, up by half from $39,000 in the 2008 school year. The U.S. stock market, measured by the S&P 500 .SPX, has tripled in the last decade. Hedge fund boss Ken Griffin set a record for a U.S. home sale when he bought a $238 million penthouse condominium on “Billionaires’ Row” just off New York City’s Central Park. Yet rents in New York have risen twice as fast as wages, according to StreetEasy data from 2010-2017, squeezing lowerincome residents. U.S. home prices were near their lowest levels of affordability since 2008, research by ATTOM Data Solutions shows. And the number of homeless people sleeping in the city’s shelters is 70% higher than a decade ago, according to the Coalition for the Homeless, an advocacy group.

SPORTS Gauff eclipses Venus to steal day one limelight American 15-year-old Cori Gauff stole the show on the opening day of Wimbledon with a debut victory over five-time champion and her inspiration Venus Williams. Gauff, the youngest woman ever to survive the qualifying tournament, played like a seasoned performer as she clinically beat the 39-year-old great 6-4 6-4 to earn a standing ovation from an enchanted Court One crowd. “I wouldn’t say I didn’t expect to win the match. I knew that I was going to go out there and play the way I play,” Gauff, who claimed victory on her fourth match point, told reporters. “I wasn’t surprised that I won. I mean, I was just overwhelmed at the end.” Her victory put everything else in the shade on an opening day full of shocks in both draws. World number two and second seed Naomi Osaka lost 7-6(4) 6-2 to dangerous Kazakh Yulia Putintseva who had also got the better of her in their recent match in Birmingham — a defeat that effectively cost Osaka the number one ranking. U.S. Open and Australian Open champion Osaka appeared close to tears when she spoke to the media later. “Can I leave? I feel like I’m about to cry,” the Japanese 21-year-old said. French Open runner-up Marketa Vondrousova, the 16th seed, also bowed out but former world number ones Karolina Pliskova, Caroline Wozniacki, Simona Halep and Victoria

Men’s defending champion Novak Djokovic was untroubled as he began his quest for a fifth Wimbledon crown that would take him level on the all-time list with Swedish great Bjorn Borg. The Serb, with former champion Goran Ivanisevic in his box, beat Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3 7-5 6-3. It was a bad day for two of the young guns expected to lead the new generation into a brave new era, however. Sixth seed Alexander Zverev lost 4-6 6-3 6-2 7-5 to Czech Jiri Vesely while Greek 20-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas went down in five sets to Italian journeyman Thomas Fabbiano. Tsitsipas, in particular, was highly-fancied to have a long run at the All England Club having reached the Australian Open semi-final this year but lost 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-7(8) 6-3.
“He was just better than me today. I think the way I played, it should have been in three, not five. I don’t know how I got to five. I guess with my fighting spirit, somehow I managed to win those two sets,” he said. Croatia’s 40-year-old Ivo Karlovic, one of 47 men aged 30 or over in the men’s singles, became the oldest man to play a first round match in the Wimbledon singles since Ken Rosewall in 1975. The giant Croat served 20 aces as he beat Andrea Arnaboldi in straight sets and will meet Fabbiano next. Last year’s runner-up Kevin Anderson cruised through in straight sets against PierreHugues Herbert. Eight-time champion Roger Federer and women’s defending champion Angelique Kerber, as well as 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, start their campaigns on Tuesday.
Durant chooses to go his own way with move to Nets With his decision to join the Brooklyn Nets, Kevin Durant ended an era in Golden State while advancing a trend of the NBA’s elite players forging their own paths with new teams. Durant will now team up with fellow All Star Kyrie Irving, who will depart Boston after just two seasons, leaving behind a Warriors franchise he helped lead to three consecutive NBA Finals. Durant, 30, is expected to miss most if not all of next season while recuperating from a ruptured Achilles suffered during this month’s NBA Finals defeat by Toronto. On paper, Golden State had more to offer Durant than any other team. The Warriors could have rewarded Durant with a five-year, $221 million super max contract – far more than the $164 million he will receive from the Nets. They also provided the stability of a championship pedigree as

Durant rehabs his injury. Golden State have played in the last five Finals and the presence of Stephen Curry and exceptional coaching and ownership offers promise of a competitive future. None of those factors were apparently more valuable than Durant’s freedom to choose his own path. And in that regard he is following something of a trend. LeBron James helped pioneer the way by leaving Cleveland to form a super team with Miami, returning to the Cavaliers following a four-year run with the Heat, before settling with the Los Angeles Lakers this past year. James’ new running mate, Anthony Davis, forced his way from the New Orleans Pelicans in order to join the Lakers. Even reigning NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard could soon be choosing a fresh destination over Toronto. Durant previously made a splash in free agency by moving from Oklahoma
Golden State Warriors forward Kevin Durant (35) sits on the court after an apparent injury during the second quarter in game five against the Toronto Raptors of the 2019 NBA Finals at Scotiabank Arena City to the Warriors three years ago. The decision will perhaps leave the Warriors with a question mark hanging over them as they enter the 2019-20 season.
A second-half penalty from Darren Mattocks put Jamaica into their third consecutive Gold Cup semi-final on Sunday after a 1-0 win over Panama in Philadelphia. Mattocks, who had come on as a substitute just two minutes earlier, struck from the spot with less than 15 minutes left. “We lacked finishing,” said Panama coach Julio Dely Valdes. “Jamaica almost had no chances.” Jamaica, runners up in 2015 and 2017, will play the United States in next Wednesday’s semi-final after the defending champions beat Curacao 1-0. Mexico will play Haiti in the other semifinal a day earlier. The final will be held in Chicago on July 7.
Charlotte Hornets guard Kemba Walker (15) talks to his bench during the fourth quarter against the Detroit Pistons at Little Caesars Arena
PG Walker to sign four-year, $141 million deal with Celtics Three-time All-Star Kemba Walker has agreed to join the Boston Celtics on a fouryear, $141 million deal, his agent, Jeff Schwartz, confirmed to ESPN. Walker spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Charlotte Hornets. Sources also confirmed to ESPN that as part of the agreement, Charlotte will send Walker to Boston as part of a sign-and-trade that will move point guard Terry Rozier to the Hornets. Rozier will then sign a three-year, $58 million deal. Just a few weeks ago, Walker said he would take less than the five-year, $221 million “supermax” contract only the Hornets could offer him to stay in Charlotte. The Charlotte Observer reported on Saturday, however, that team officials were set on paying less than $170 million because of concerns about the NBA luxury tax in the future. In Boston, he will replace Kyrie Irving at point guard. A fellow free agent, Irving agreed to a four-year deal with the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday, according to multiple reports. Walker, a 29-year-old Connecticut product, averaged 25.6 points and 5.9 assists while starting all 82 games for the Hornets last season. Those numbers are above his eight-year career averages of 19.8 points and 5.5 assists.

Wayward Osaka sent packing from Wimbledon
Japan’s Naomi Osaka in action during her first round match against Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva World number two Naomi Osaka’s hopes of a third Grand Slam title were shredded on Centre Court as she was dumped out of Wimbledon in the first round, losing 7-6(4) 6-2 to Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva on Monday. to Grand Slam success at the U.S. and Australian Opens, failed to find her range on the slick lawns of the All England Club, tumbling out amid a flurry of unforced errors. Putintseva was far from an unknown quantity for Osaka, having recently knocked her out in Birmingham, and again proved a resolute obstacle for the Japanese, fighting back after an early break to take the first set on a tiebreak. She broke the Japanese second seed twice in a dominant second set, wrapping up victory in an hour and 36 minutes when her opponent sliced a backhand into the net, becoming the first toptwo seed to lose in the women’s first round since Martina Hingis in 2001. Despite Osaka’s lofty ranking following her rapid rise to the sport’s summit, this was always going to be a potential banana skin for the Japanese, whose form since winning her second major in January has been patchy. She had made only one semi-final since winning the Australian Open, had suffered a third-round exit at Roland Garros and had entered Wimbledon on the back of a second-round defeat by Putintseva in Birmingham. Six of her seven defeats in 2019 had been to players ranked outside world’s top 20 while the 39th-ranked Putintseva was looking for her third top-five win of the season. If the omens had appeared to be conspiring against Osaka, she did herself no favors on court. Things begun well when she broke in the third game, but it was not long before momentum swung toward her opponent, who broke back for 3-3 before claiming the first set on a tiebreak. Osaka looked increasingly despondent in the second as the unforced errors came thick and fast. After two breaks of serve, Putintseva quickly brought up two match points. Osaka saved the first, but a 38th unforced error from the Japanese proved terminal.
Warriors reach five-year, $190 million max deal with star guard, per report The Golden State Warriors have quite a few big decisions to make this offseason, but whether or not to retain Klay Thompson on a long-term deal doesn’t appear to be one that they plan to dwell on for very long. According to Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle, star guard Klay Thompson has agreed to a fiveyear, $190 million contract with the Warriors. Guard Klay Thompson has agreed to sign a five-year maximum contract with the Warriors worth $190 million, league sources have confirmed with The Chronicle. Before free agency opened Sunday, the Warriors offered Thompson the max. Thompson, not surprisingly, accepted on the spot. Thompson has long voiced his desire to stick with Golden State long-term. Even after the shooting guard suffered an ACL injury in Game 6 of the NBA
Klay Thompson Finals that could sideline him for most - if not all - of next season, the Warriors had no hesitation about offering him a max contract. In addition, Shams Charania of The Athletic had previously reported that both sides planned to agree to the deal shortly after free agency began. Monday afternoon, Sam Amick of The Athletic reported
that Thompson’s new deal with the Warriors is fully guaranteed, includes no options, no “no trade” clause, and 15% trade kicker, per his agent, Greg Lawrence of Wasserman. The Warriors will also be tasked with deciding whether or not to bring back DeMarcus Cousins. In addition, versatile forward Draymond Green is eligible for a supermax contract extension, so that will be something that the franchise will have to ponder going forward. Thompson is set to miss a large chunk of the 2019-20 season as he recovers from a torn ACL. The sharpshooting guard suffered the injury in Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors. The former first-round pick is coming off another stellar season in which he averaged 21.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists. Thompson also remained one of the top shooters in the NBA with a 40.2 percent clip from beyond the arc.
Warriors owner: No other player will wear Durant’s No. 35 Golden State Warriors owner Joe Lacob is showing his appreciation for Kevin Durant’s contributions to three successful seasons by promising that no other player will wear jersey No. 35 as long as Lacob is team chairman. Lacob released a statement Monday thanking Durant, the two-time NBA Finals MVP who helped the Warriors win back-to-back championships in 2017 and ’18 before his postseason was shortened by injury this year. Durant on Sunday announced he would be signing a contract to join the Brooklyn Nets. He is expected to miss all of next season while he recovers from surgery for a ruptured right Achilles tendon suffered in Game 5 of the finals, which Golden State lost in six games to the Toronto Raptors. “Today, as he starts a new chapter in his incredible career, we thank KD for all of his contributions, for being an integral part to one of the most prolific runs in NBA history and wish him well as he continues his Hall of Fame journey,” Lacob said. “As long as I am Co-Chairman of this team, no player will ever wear (No.) 35 for the Warriors again.” Golden State had hoped Durant would choose to stay for about $221 million over the next
five seasons, but he chose to join the Nets and play alongside Kyrie Irving instead. On behalf of the franchise, Lacob applauded Durant for his efforts on and off the court representing the Warriors. “Three years ago, we were thrilled with the arrival of Kevin Durant, a transformative NBA player and one of the best to ever play the game,” Lacob said. “He provided our fans and franchise with numerous highlights during his stay here_ two NBA championships, two NBA Finals MVPs, three trips to the Finals, unparalleled efficiency_ and carried himself with class and dignity both on and off the court. His commitment to our community was evident each day, including last season when his philanthropic efforts earned him the NBA’s annual Community Assist Award.” Warriors coach Steve Kerr made it clear when the season ended everyone understood Durant had earned the chance to pursue every opportunity. “I know that we all want him back, and we think this is a great situation for him and vice versa,” Kerr said. “So, hopefully we get him back and keep this thing going with the understanding that he’s a free agent and we want
