FOREIGN INVESTMENT BOOMING IN NORTH AND MIDDLE CAICOS by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief
S
everal wealthy foreign investors have been purchasing prime real estate, including beachfront land, on the islands of North Caicos and Middle Caicos and building expensive luxury villas and other residential and commercial developments. Investigations by The SUN revealed that there has been a significant increase in land purchases and construction on those two islands in recent years, indicating that they are becoming a viable investment alternative to Providenciales which has traditionally been the development Mecca of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Information from various sources showed that most of the land sales are by private residents of those two islands, some of whom have sold their land for “close to and above a Pictured From L-R – Goldray Ewing, Force, Stephen Dean, Deputy Education- Hon. Chance for Change program launched in TCI
TCI can benefit from Caribbean police forces and enhanced community policing By Todeline Defralien Turks and Caicos Islands can indeed benefit significantly with help from Caribbean police forces and enhanced community policing, according to Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police from the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Stephen Dean. During an exclusive interview with The SUN, Mr. Dean said that having an exchange where TCI Police can go and learn from The Bahamas and other Caribbean Islands will enhance their policing. “I see that for the whole Caribbean. I wish that we were so united that we use to do it. The door is there and we have the Association of Caribbean Commissioner of Police, they meet every time and they share, but how does that trickle down to our officers getting that
exchange? We do it a lot of times with the United States...” Dean said regional police assistance from The Bahamas or Jamaica can make a difference in TCI. “One of the things that will benefits is TCI officers doing initial training in The Bahamas. I think that there is a group getting ready to go to Freeport but that is on the entry level scale, but how do you do on the supervisory level and getting them on the ground? There are some things that you can learn and when they took me on a tour (in Turks and Caicos Islands) I saw some communities that looks familiar and I know some of the things that we’re done with some of those communities (in The Bahamas), so maybe when you think about those points, if we can get them there and they can take some patrols with us and they can understand
some of the things that we do then that will help.” Furthermore, Dean said that policing various communities that you know are affiliated with gangs is a must for the police force. “If a fella thinks that he’s a bad man in this area we will know what to do. There are certain approaches that you can take to a fella, so you cannot just keep policing and saying that things are quiet (when) it is not quiet. You have to let the bad man know that things are not quiet and we have to have a conversation every two weeks, but you have to come to my office to have that conversation. There are things that we can do so that the guy can get confused and so you have to play a physiological thing with them. There is a lot of ways in policing; you have to be on the ground and that is why it is important that when you reach
Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police from the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Stephen Dean a certain level, you have good ground experience. You don’t spend all day in the office and then you come here to tell me, it is not in the book. Things change out there as it relates to decision making and you cannot go to any page in the book all the time because some of the guys in these communities are not going to understand the book,” he explained.

Over 100 young men and women jailed in TCI each year
By Todeline Defralien According the statistics, over one hundred young men and women are incarcerated in Turks and Caicos Islands each year. These alarming statistics were provided by Permanent Secretary Wesley Clerveaux, of the Ministry of Home Affairs during the launch of ‘Chance for Change’ on Wednesday July 10th. Giving his account in the TCI situation Mr. Clerveaux said, “According to the Department of Statistics there are currently over 100 young men and women incarcerated in Turks and Caicos Islands each year. Prison is a revolving door with persons incarcerated and persons being released. Within the coming months, significant percentage of these offenders in jail today will be released and then return to the communities from which they came.” Between the period of 2012 and 2017 67.8% of the persons incarcerated were below the age of 35 years of age here in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Minimum wage in TCI needs reviewing, says President of Provo Chamber of Commerce By Todeline Defralien Turks and Caicos Islands Government (TCIG) must review the minimum wage in the country, according to President of Providenciales Chamber of Commerce, Kyle Smith. Speaking during the launch of Business and Human Rights on Wednesday July 3rd at Brayton Hall, Smith said, “The TCIG needs to review its economic model which is at the core of this to identify ways to reduce the cost of running business in the TCI. It needs to engage the business sector in discussions on revisiting. The TCIG must play a role in looking at the cost of doing businesses and develop policies to make cost of business profitable whilst simultaneously ensuring that people are not only engaged in decent labour, but that they receive a fair wage for the work to do.” He added: “The minimum wage to ensure complementarity with International Labour Organization (ILO) standards where a person is allowed to work 48 hours at a rate to give them the ability across the board to have a decent standard of living. Embodied in this concept of decent standard of living is health, promotion of healthy lifestyles that include the ability to afford healthy foods. The number of chronic illnesses and deaths in TCI can be attributed to affordability in this regard.”
Smith went on to say that he loves Sweet Tees chicken and so does the majority of the local populace, because it is tasty and cheap. But he questioned the daily consumption. “Persons working multiple jobs are deprived of the time to provide homecooked meals for themselves and their children. Furthermore, the social impact where children deprived of parental care is left to the devices of social media which we are witnessing the impact. Smith stressed that people are employed to work; the purpose of work is to make money which is needed for food, housing, living, fun and to hopefully lead to a more independent and comfortable lifestyle. “To grant employment to these persons, a business needs to generate sufficient revenue to cover start up and operational costs, turn a profit and remain sustainable to pay their employees at best the minimum wage of $6.25 as mandated by the Employment Ordinance. At its minimum, is this wage enough to provide an individual a decent living? According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), standard weekly working hours (excluding overtime) cannot exceed 48 hours per week and eight hours a day. According to the ILO, “the imposition of hours limits was intended to ensure a safe and healthy working environment and adequate rest or leisure time
between shifts,” the President explained. He argued that a quick calculation will immediately show that at this wage rate and to be in accordance with the standards as set out in the ILO which is subscribed to and cited in the employment ordinance $300 dollars a week on average $1200 per month is negligible as a wage earning to service the cost of living of an individual or family in the Turks and Caicos Islands. He continued: “Unfortunately, there has been no correlation between wages and the incremental increases in the cost of living in the TCI to ensure adherence to the standards and effect a decent standard of living for hundreds in the TCI. This is reflected in the National Skills Audit whose data outlines the following: Thirty-ninepoint nine percent (39.9%) persons responded that their “current monthly wage in the TCI” is between US$ 1000 to $1999 and 20.5% stated between US$2000 to 2999. The others were as follows: Under 1000 – 11.8%, 3000 to 3999– 6.7%, 4000 to 4999 – 6.2%, 5000 to 5999 – 1.5%, 6000 and above - 3.1and Not Applicable – 10.2%.” Meantime, Smith stated that these numbers alone are a clear indicator that most persons are surviving just on the boundary of minimum wage and the income is NOT enough to sustain the most basic living standards here. “It is an indisputable fact that
President of Providenciales Chamber of Commerce, Kyle Smith businesses prefer not to have employees that are employed in multiple jobs, or to moonlight or engage in activities that impede on their regular job, however for them it is a necessity. In this case I raise the first level of irrefutable discrimination that I call to address.” Smith said a country, a nation, an economy operates in an organized sequence which is inclusive of businesses, households, inputs, outputs and at its core we have Governments. All of which must operate in tandem for the survival and sustainability of a balanced and growing economy.
Chance for Change program officially launched in TCI By Todeline Defralien The long waited ‘Chance for Change’ rehabilitation program for criminal offenders has officially launched in Turks and Caicos Islands. The officially launch took place during a brief and informative ceremony took place on Wednesday July 10th at Blue Haven Resort. Chance for Change will join efforts of various Government departments, private sector organisations, churches and other non-governmental groups all working together to assist offenders and to support their transition from incarceration back into society. Among those who attended the event were: Deputy Governor Her Excellency Anya Williams; Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson; Chief Magistrate Hon. Mrs. Tanya Lobban-Jackson; Minister of EducationHon. Karen Malcolm; Hon. Goldray Ewing, Minister for Home Affairs, Hon. Vaden Delroy Williams-Minister of Immigration; PDM chairman Douglas Parnell, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education Mr. Wesley Clerveaux, various pastors, representatives from the Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force, Tourist Board and public and private sectors. Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police from the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Stephen Dean was the guest speaker at the launch where plans and objectives were outlined and existing efforts to rehabilitate offenders were shared. Plans to launch the Chance for Change program began under the leadership of the former minister with responsibility for Social Development
and Her Majesty’s Prison (HMP), Hon Vaden Williams. Hon Karen Malcolm who now assumes responsibility for social development, spearheads the project along with the Social Development Department. Premier Cartwright-Robinson commenting on the initiative said, “There are some of our people, Turks and Caicos Islanders, who may have made a mistake one time, or made a bad decision that landed them in prison and are being branded by that decision for the rest of their lives. They are often times forced to live sometimes in poverty because no one is willing to offer them a chance for redemption. Chance for Change will change that. There is urgency for every facet of society to unite to restore the faith in these individuals who have served their prison sentence, learned their lessons, paid for their mistakes and are willing to work and be a part of civil society once again as law abiding citizens. We cannot as a small country toss any citizen aside. Our behaviour to not accept them makes us a part of the problem.” Robinson stated that her government fully supports this initiative and will do what they can, along with the partnership of the private sector, to push this project forward. “We have waited long enough for this launch and I am eager and excited to get this program up and running. There is a lot of work to do, but this is the first step,” the Premier added Minister of Education Hon. Karen Malcolm added that crime has become the main public safety issue for the Turks and Caicos Islands and a significant threat to any country’s human and economic development. She said, “Rightfully so, crime
and its provision has become a much debated issue, as such it is incumbent upon all of us to do our part to curb or prevent crime in these islands. Chance for Change program is one such initiative that we believe will go a long way to reduce crime by helping to reform persons previously committed of a crime so that they do not fall into a vicious cycle. My government and I are strong believers that if we want to stop the revolving door of incarceration for our young people, we need to provide them with the skills and opportunity to reintegrate into families, social aspect of communities so that they not just reenter the same set of circumstances that lead to incarceration in the first place.” Malcolm said she is very happy that they are finally getting this program off the ground and she asked for it to be supported. Deputy Governor, Her Excellency Anya Williams said offenders should have another chance at life. “Often time we don’t understand how demanding the work is of the prison and for many years many persons have sees prison as punishment. Prison from the day that they were sentenced and you walk through those gates you are suppose to working towards building a better person so that when that person leaves the prison they don’t re-offend and they have another chance at life. This program is so very important. It is something that has been talked about for a very long time and it is great to see that it has come to fruition,” the Deputy Governor said. She added: “I want to use the opportunity to encourage every person here to support the work of the prison and the Social Development Department
because they are trying their best, but there is more that can be done and more that each of us can do as private citizens and also as corporate bodies. Everyone makes mistakes in life. Some persons make mistakes that are more serious than others, but that doesn’t have to be a life punishment. Supported is needed in all forms. Government can’t do everything. There has to be more done by everyone.” Williams commended the Ministry of Education and the Government on the launch of this program and stated that they had the full support from the office of the Deputy Governor. Mr. Clyde Green, Asst. Superintendent of Her Majesty’s Prison, stated that this is a major change for the prison. “This is a good day for us and I hope everyone recognizes how big of a deal the Chance for Change is. There are hundreds of men and women that come through those prison doors and often times it seems to be a cycle, but with us bringing forth this platform to engage offenders, I think that we are giving each and every ex-offender a chance to be a real and productive citizen in this country. Some of that would be easy and some of that would be difficult, but it is important that our society/islands will be improved by our joint contributions seeking to uplift these persons and to help those leaving to never return. I encourage each of us to support this program and help the prisoners and by extension to help our country,” he explained. There were also testimonials from two ex-offenders, Emanjoe Forbes and Audley Williams.

Telecommunications Commission announces public consultation on number portability The Telecommunications Commission is seeking the counsel of the public on the subject of number portability for the Turks and Caicos. Number portability is the ability to retain your number when changing providers. This facility is regulated by the Commission but carried out by local telecommunications carriers. If enacted it essentially means that customers will be able to use their current number on any carrier of their choice. No longer would we be able to identify a person’s phone company by the beginning digits of their number. There will be no distinction between postpaid and prepaid, also fixed line service can be transferred from one carrier to the next. Number portability is available in many countries across the world including countries in Africa, Europe, the United States, and the United Kingdom to name a few. Mobile portability is spreading to the Caribbean as well, in countries such as St Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and St Vincent and the Grenadines. The consultation process for number portability in the Turks and Caicos began in 2016 with discussions between carriers concerning its appropriateness
and feasibility. The Telecommunications Commission will conduct a public consultation to understand the customers’ perspective on allowing number portability in the Turks and Caicos. “To ensure that the implementation of Number portability is the desire of the consumers, we hired Outside the Box Advertising to conduct a Number Portability Survey throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands,” says Mr. Kenva Williams, Director General for the Telecommunications Commission. The Commission believes that the local telecommunications market could benefit from the introduction of number portability across both mobile and fixed platforms, as it can bring value to the consumers, by enabling them to move their number to a provider of their choice that best meets their needs. “It’s important to us to know if this is something that the public wants. Therefore, we are seeking the assistance of the public to provide feedback on the development, implementation, and introduction of mobile and fixed Number Portability services within the Turks and Caicos Islands,” says Mr. Williams. The surveys will be conducted across all islands. Survey interviewers will

Autistic Jermaine Williams Jr. beats the odds, places third in GSAT mathematics By Todeline Defralien Ten-year-old Jermaine William Jr. certainly beat the odds and proved that nothing is impossible once you put your mind to it. The parents of Jermaine Jr. are beaming with pride as their autistic son is breaking autistic ceilings in the Turks and Caicos Island and has scored 97.60% in mathematics placing third overall in GSAT. In addition, Williams Jr. is also the valedictorian at Wesley Methodist School for year 2019. In an exclusive interview with The SUN, mother Melisha Williams spoke about her sons struggles and what they as parents are so proud of his accomplishments. According to Mr. Williams, Jermaine was first diagnosed with autism at the age of three at the Cheshire Hall Medical Centre and only starting talking at the age of five. “After his first birthday we noticed that he wasn’t speaking or behaving the same as other children his age, so we were a bit concerned and we decided to take him to Jamaica for consultation. We meet with a specialist there and we were informed that he is too young to be tested. They usually don’t test children at that age when they see speech delays because boys usually develop later than girls and they told us that there was no need to be concerned. We also noticed other signs as well; whenever we called his name he wouldn’t respond. He would play with certain toys and he had the tendency to line them up and he constantly covered his ears whenever he heard loud sounds; I found it strange too.” Williams said her pregnancy was difficult because doctors informed that the size of her son’s head wasn’t normal. “At two years old, I figured that we should put him in a daycare where he would be able to interact with other children and hopefully that would help his speech and other
behavioral issues that he was having,” she added. “My husband worked at the Wesley Methodist School as a high school teacher at the time, so we were fortunate that we could place him there and my husband was able to check on him.” Williams told The SUN she fasted for 21 days and prayed to God every day to heal her son. “I remember writing exactly what I wanted the Lord to do on a paper and the main thing was to protect my son and help him to speak and come around. I remembered that stage in my life, because it really made a difference. In times when others were sleeping, I was up on my knees praying morning and night.” Williams said at home her son threw a lot of tantrums and as she observed him, she knew he was frustrated and wanted to speak and they weren’t able to understand him. In addition, Williams believes that going to church prepared her for this challenging experience, adding that she sees other mothers with special needs children and she understands their frustration because she lived it. The mother of two said Jermaine began to speak and interact with people at age five, with the great help of his sister who always played with him. She gave a great testimony, stating that at a very young age her son was able to say well over 14 time tables, which she describes as incredible. “This particular afternoon at just five years old we were practicing for his math test the following day and I started to say 2x1 is 2 and he continued and when he finished his two time tables he went on to the three tables and then the four and the five and by the time he reached twelve he was saying 12, 24, 36 and I just stood there and the hair in the back of my neck literally stood up. I remember this moment and I was afraid because he didn’t stop at 12, he went on to 13, 14 and he kept going and I had to tell him to stop,” she added.
Furthermore, brilliant Jermaine also has a photographic memory and can remember the license plates of family members, teachers and his parents, which most adults cannot remember. Williams said she believe that it was through God’s grace, her fasting and prayers and through early intervention, that her son is where he is at this point in his life. “At the end of the day he is my child and I am responsible for him and one of the greatest fears that I believe mothers with special needs children have, is if I were to die today, what would happen to my child and who will take care of my child. I am fighting daily for him to be at a point so that if I leave him he can take care of himself. This is something that I cannot do alone and God has put an institution in my life who has built a structure, a foundation that constantly supports him,” she continued. William stated that Jermaine Jr. was in a normal classroom and he is able to function in a normal classroom and for him to be able to do so is a major accomplishment. “It is not going to stop here and I don’t want it to stop here. Sometimes we see special needs children and we put limits on them. You cannot limit them. God does not limit anyone and he is able to do the impossible. You don’t have to be rich and you don’t have to be well known, but God has done something great in my life for my child and I believe that others need to know that God is able,” she explained. Williams stated that she felt very emotional when her son sat the GSAT exams but his overall accomplishments are to be celebrated. “He may not be where he is supposed to be, but he has come a mighty long way and I am thankful for that. My son is a testimony that you shouldn’t watch the label; God is able. When you ask him what he wants to be he tells you he wants to be a transportation civil engineer and I
Jermaine Williams Jr. pictured with Minister of Education Karen Malcolm at GSAT prize giving ceremony on Monday July 1st, 2019 believe that is exactly what he is going to do.” Williams said she tried to receive assistance from the government but none was provided and as a parent, she and her husband took on the task and became Jermaine’s behavioral therapist. “I reached out to government for assistance because he needs to see a behaviour therapist and it is going to be costly and I was wondering if they could pay half of his school fee or pay his school fee so that I could take the money and get the extra help to help ease the burden. I applied three times and never heard from them. The government should do more and more should be put in place,” she added. The Williams family is so proud of Jermaine Jr. and encourages other families with autistic children to pray and God will help them. Williams thanked Mrs. Yolande Robinson of Learn & Lead, the teachers, Bethany Baptist Church members, family members, the Wesley Methodist teachers and the Hope Foundation who all have been very supportive.
Hon. Goldray Ewing attends annual Caribbean Postal Union Conference in Havana, Cuba Honourable Goldray Ewing, Minister for Home Affairs, Public Utilities and Transportation attended the Annual Caribbean Postal Union Conference and the Council of Ministers of Postal Affairs in Havana, Cuba from 25th – 28th June 2019 under the theme “Our Way Forward – Building on the Pillars of the Regional Postal-Sector Strategy”. Other members of the delegation included Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Clara Gardiner, Postmaster General, Mrs. Elizabeth Garland-James and Head of Secretariat, Ms. Cynara John. The Caribbean Postal Union (CPU) is a governing body that aims to have a Caribbean that has a sustainable Post Network that provides a wide range of demands, communication and logistic services, at a reasonable cost. At this year’s conference, countries were able to hold discussions on identifying ways to strengthentheir operating capacity, opportunities to contribute to economic growth and the promotion of effective trade through the use of technology, financial inclusion and connectivity.
It was through those discussions that countries were able to explore avenues to improve competitiveness and their continued viability in a very challenging and operating environment. Some of the common challenges being faced by the Post in several countries are: Manual processing with costly ineffective software or no access to technology Urgent need to generate revenue to sustain their operations; inadequate customer focus; inability to digitize bill payments and other agency services; difficulty in monitoring and control. Postmaster General, Mrs. Elizabeth Garland-James had the opportunity to take part in panel discussions under the topic Produce for New Business, Products and Services. Mrs. James shared that the recently opened George Brown Post Office in Providenciales is very timely as it affords the Post the space to handle the opportunities that online shopping and overseas shipment brings, not only for overseas vendors but for local entrepreneurs likewise. She also shared that the use of technology is central to improving customer service and that
the process of implementing parcel tracking software has already begun. Commenting on his first conference overseas since assuming his new portfolio, Honourable Goldray Ewing, Minister with responsibility for Postal Services said: “Attendance at this Caribbean Postal Union Conference and the Council of Ministers for Postal Affairs was very worthwhile. In addition to deliberating on, and learning firsthand about policies decisions that have the potential to affect the Turks and Caicos Islands before the end of this
year, it provided tremendous insights as to how we can revolutionize postal services in our own country. A major takeaway from the conference for me is the potential to offer a wide range of services that can be meaningful to a larger percentage of our population and by extension increase Government revenue. It also provided a forum to meet Ministerial colleagues, who no doubt, will be a meaningful resource in my efforts to elevate postal services in the Turks and Caicos Islands.”

Eleven students participated in the Workshop and Chef Pratt spent time speaking with them about choosing a career in the
culinary field, basic kitchen etiquette, avoiding common issues such as cross contamination, healthy eating, and food cost and menu planning. After learning from Chef Pratt, the students were able to participate tangibly, by breaking into groups to prepare an appetizer, entrée, and dessert to showcase to School Administration, and other local leaders. This opportunity was very helpful in letting students see first-hand

Measles
By Dr. Marsha Barnett
In the world of global travel, a measles outbreak in any part of the Europe or the United States could have serious implications for all countries and people. With measles intermittently domineering the headlines, it is best to understand the condition to help prevent contracting it and its complications. How will it present? Most persons think of the generalized red rash when thinking of measles. However, the rash usually appears 3 to 5 days after the initial symptoms start! The first symptoms of the infection are usually a cough, runny nose and fever. You can also develop red eyes and red spots to the mouth called Koplik’s spots. How contagious is it? A person who has measles is contagious and can spread the disease from 4 days before the rash appears! In fact, they are most contagious while they have a fever, runny nose, and cough and would appear to have a common cough and cold. Measles is highly contagious — 90% of people who haven’t been vaccinated for measles will get it if they come in contact with an infected person. Measles spreads via respiratory droplets, which means that when people breathe in or have direct contact with virus-infected fluid, such as the droplets sprayed into the air
when someone with measles sneezes or coughs, they are at risk of becoming ill. A person who is exposed to the virus might not show symptoms until 8-10 days later. Why the recent outbreaks? Before measles vaccination became available in the 1960s, there were millions of cases worldwide. More than 500,000 cases were reported every year in the United States, and about 500 of them died. Due to widespread immunizations, the number of measles cases declined steadily to very low numbers. But in recent years there has been an anti-vaccination movement especially against the Measles, Mumps and Rubella, MMR, vaccine. This was because persons were touting possible side effects of vaccinations, questioning the need for them and also linking them to the development of developmental issues in children, in particular Autism. Consequently, due to an increase in the number of unvaccinated children, the illness has risen in prevalence, spreading quickly in areas where too few people have received the vaccine. In fact, about 85% of people infected with measles were not immunized or their immunization status was unknown, although they were eligible to receive the vaccine! The people at highest risk of getting measles during these outbreaks are infants who aren’t old enough to get the vaccine, pregnant women,
and persons with weakened immune systems. The vaccine The most important thing you can do to protect your children from measles is to have them vaccinated. For most, measles protection is part of the Measles- Mumps-Rubella vaccine (MMR) given when they’re 12 to 15 months old and again when they’re 4 to 6 years old. Infants are generally protected from measles for 6 months after birth due to immunity passed on by their mothers. Measles vaccine usually is not Dr. Marsha Barnett given to infants younger than 12 months old. But if there’s a measles outbreak, Treatment the vaccine may be given when a child is 6-11 months old, followed by the There is no specific medical usual MMR immunization at 12-15 treatment for measles. Invest more in sports. It is an investment in the future of our youths By Drexwell Seymour On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of having Mr. Jarred Forbes (Director of Sports) as my guest on Financially Speaking weekly show. During the show, he revealed how his department was able to invite coaches to the Turks and Caicos Islands and a result Bryana Brown secured a 60% scholarship from Tennessee Tech. Well done. I also want to thank the Government for the initiative that was implemented recently by offering scholarships specifically for athletes. Finally, I want to thank all of the 15 established sporting federations that are making a difference in the lives of our young people. This article is for us to seriously review the funding for sports in the TCI. It is struggle for these organizations getting funding from the private sector, so this is one area that our government can assist by increasing the budget for the sports department. Current sports budget The current budget allocated to the Sports Department is $987,076 which represents .004 of the overall total expenditure budget for TCIG.
Of this amount, $503,926 is allocated to payroll. The remaining $483,150 is for the operations covering transport, electricity, maintenance, rental, grants and contribution, inter school sports and water. The two largest components are maintenance and contributions with $80,000 each, followed by electricity of $70,992. Recommended sports budget At minimum, the sports recurrent expenditure budget should be tripled resulting in about $3M. One international game alone can cost $40,000, depending on the number of players. A local basketball tournament can cost around $30k and we will need at least four of these for the year. A track and field tournament can cost as much as $60k. Some countries are members of International Olympics and as a result, benefit significantly from contributions. Because TCI is not a member, it is incumbent upon us to invest more. We will need to recruit more coaches and additional staff. Apparently, there are a lot of volunteers, but the commitment to sports may improve if there is compensation to individuals. The thing is, a lot of people are already full-time
employees elsewhere and some have businesses and don’t have the time to commit as they would like, so we will have to pay individuals for assistance. Why invest more in sports? Mr. Forbes believes that persons that are involve in sports will be excellent employees, as they will be team-players, hard workers, resilient workers and great leadership skills I believe there is too much idle time among our young people and as a result, they are finding others things to get involved in. If we have consistent sports programs, this can keep our young people occupied and hopefully take them off the streets, thus reducing crimes among them. Sports unite people no matter who you are. If there is one thing we need in our society right now, it is for us to unite. Sports can result in healthier lives. It enhances and promotes patrotism Conclusion I know the budget process is a rigorous one and if we certainly increase the sports budget, we may have to reduce something else. However, if we
focus on increasing our revenue items, we can have flexibility in increasing other expenditure items such as sports. As Mr. Forbes stated, we must have consistent and regular events, but these events require money. Of course, the money must be managed properly, with good controls in place, and our programs should be structured and organized well. We talk a lot about helping our youths, uniting people and trying to alleviate crime. Here is one way to do so; invest more in sports.
Limpid English Learning By Dian Kennedy One of the most often ignored concepts in the English language is that of gender. In languages like Spanish, it is extremely important to note the difference in gender as the gender determines the verb form or even how the spelling and flow is affected. In grammar, the gender of a noun, pronoun, or adjective is whether it is masculine, feminine, or neuter. A word’s gender can affect its form and behavior. In English, only personal pronouns such as ‘she’, reflexive pronouns such as ‘itself’, and possessive determiners such as ‘his’ have gender. Gender is not only used in relation to the above, but also as it relates to how we refer to animals. I would like to use this week to examine those words as we improve our basic knowledge of words and how they are used in the English language. MASCULINE

Premier Robinson participates in Health in All Policies Workshop
The Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson, Government Ministers and members of Parliament were in attendance at the first of a series workshops as part of a Ministry of Health, Agriculture, Sport and Human Services and Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) joint initiative geared toward Health in all Policies. Minister for Health, Hon. Edwin Astwood brought remarks for the opening of the event at the Shore Club on Monday, 8 July 2019. The main objectives for the training exercise was to: • Obtain commitment to consider health outcomes during policy making across all sectors of government • Identify roles of health and nonhealth sectors in a Health in All
Policies (HiAP) approach using the examples of Non-Communicable Diseases and Climate Change • Identify opportunities for a HiAP approach in Turks and Caicos Islands • Build capacity to promote, implement and evaluate HiAP • Facilitate exchange of experiences and lessons learned, and encourage multi-sectoral collaboration Throughout the day, there were presentations on the Introduction and the Determinants of Health; Sustainable Development Goals; 21st- Century Health Dynamic and Inequality; Health in All Policies; The Role of Government and NonGovernmental Stakeholders in HiAP and the Whole of Government Approaches to HiAP.
The Premier participated in a full day of training and group sessions, facilitated by PAHO officials including: PAHO/World Health Organisation (WHO) Country Representative, Dr Esther de Gourville; and National PAHO Consultants: Dr Keva Thompson and Brittany Jones. Commenting on the training exercise, Premier Robinson stated: “As the Minister of Finance, I can say that it is very important to ensure that good health practices are threaded throughout all policies because the largest chunk of TCI’s budget is going to health. We are spending a considerable amount on illnesses; so not only is this training very timely, but it is crucial to decision making going forward. This information will help us as policy makers to ensure that
healthcare takes priority and is included in the process of policy development to shift our practices and habits and also redirect funding to go toward prevention initiatives rather than response. So this exercise will do wonders for Turks and Caicos; it will do wonders for the Ministry of Finance but it will also help to form a population that is more productive, that is healthier and that hopefully will live longer. I applaud the Ministry of Health for this wonderful initiative and look forward to a more health conscious approach to policy making across Government.” Workshops continue until Wednesday, 10 July 2019 to include senior officials in Government and other relevant stakeholders.

ENTERTAINMENT Jay-Z’s companies sue NYC licensing company for fraud
Jay-Z speaks onstage at the 2018 Pre-Grammy Gala And Salute To Industry Icons at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel in New York Jay-Z’s business entities sued a New York City licensing firm, claiming it cheated the companies as part of a “colossal accounting scandal.” The lawsuit accuses Iconix Brand Group Inc. of lying about its finances when it made deals with the rapper’s Roc Nation apparel company. There was no immediate response to a phone message Friday seeking comment from Iconix. When Roc Nation entered into a brand partnership with Iconix in 2013, the defendant company was fabricating financial reports to falsely inflate its earnings, according to the suit filed Thursday in state court in Manhattan. The allegations arise “out of a massive years-long fraud perpetrated by Iconix and its affiliates to amass a portfolio of trademarks under false pretenses, in the process defrauding its licensees and partners, and setting off a colossal accounting scandal the depths of which are still being uncovered,” the suit says. It adds that the scheme “sent its share price from a peak of more than $400 per share in 2014, to less than a dollar today.” Jay-Z, who’s given name is Shawn Carter, was questioned behind closed doors last year about the fraud allegations by the Securities and Exchange Commission. At the time, his lawyers said they didn’t believe he had any relevant information to share with SEC investigators. The suit says Jay-Z’s companies “have incurred substantial legal expenses in connection with, among other things, the federal government’s investigations into Iconix’s massive fraud.” The plaintiffs are seeking payment of legal fees and unspecified damages.

Sean Paul: ‘Language barrier’ a problem for dancehall artists Sean Paul says a “language barrier” is one of the reasons dancehall artists fail to make it big in the UK and US. He believes it’s hard for some people to understand “hardcore patois” - which is a mixture of several languages, including English, spoken in Jamaica. But he says dancehall has set a trend - big acts like Justin Bieber and Drake have been influenced by its sound. “One day we are going to get people logging on back to what we do,” Sean Paul tells Radio 1 Newsbeat. To fans of dancehall, Sean Paul will always be known for his hardcore tunes such as Get Busy, Temperature and Gimme The Light from the early 2000s. But over the last few years he’s had some big chart hits with massive pop stars including Dua Lipa (No Lie), Sia (Cheap Thrills) , Little Mix (Hair) and Clean Bandit (Rockabye). And this year he played on the John Peel Stage at Glastonbury as well as the main stage at Radio 1’s Big Weekend. The 69-year-old music legend made the announcement after performing “Superstition” at the end of a packed British Summer Time concert in London’s Hyde Park. He said he was speaking out to quell rumors and sought to reassure fans that he would be okay. “I’m going to be doing three shows then taking a break,” he said. “I’m having surgery. I’m going to have a kidney transplant at the end of September this year.” He said a donor has been found and that he would be fine, drawing cheers from a devoted crowd of tens of thousands that stretched out from the stage as far as the eye could see. “I came here to give you my love and to thank you for yours,” he said. “You ain’t gonna hear no rumors about us. I’m good.” He did not provide additional information about his kidney illness. There had been a recent report that Wonder was facing a serious health issue. A representative for Wonder didn’t immediately respond to a request Saturday for details about his health. He has kept an active schedule, including performing recently at a Los Angeles memorial service for slain rapper Nipsey Hussle.

Legalizing pot tied to less teen marijuana use Marijuana legalization laws don’t appear to increase teen pot use and instead may have the opposite effect, a U.S. study suggests. To see how teen marijuana use compares in states with and without such laws, researchers examined survey data on substance use collected from 1.4 million adolescents between 1993 and 2017. During that period, 27 states and Washington, D.C. legalized medical marijuana and seven states legalized cannabis for recreational purposes. Medical marijuana laws didn’t appear to influence whether teens used marijuana, the study authors reported in JAMA Pediatrics. Recreational marijuana laws, however, were associated with an 8% decline in the odds that teens would report trying cannabis in the previous 30 days and a 9% decrease in teens reporting frequent use. Reduced supply may explain why, said lead study author Mark Anderson, an associate professor in agricultural economics at Montana State University in Bozeman. “It may actually be more difficult for teens to obtain marijuana as drug dealers are replaced by licensed dispensaries that require proof of age,” Anderson said by email. “Selling to minors becomes a relatively more risky proposition after the passage of these laws.” The study wasn’t a controlled experiment designed to prove whether or how legalizing marijuana might directly alter teen use. State laws legalizing recreational marijuana generally focus on adult use and don’t permit sales to minors. Other studies have linked marijuana to a range of behavioral and emotional problems in teens. Some previous research also suggests that effects of marijuana use may be more pronounced in teens because adolescence is a period of rapid brain development. It’s possible legalizing marijuana leads more parents to talk to kids about the risks of drug use, said Rebekah Levine Coley, a professor of developmental and educational psychology at Boston College who wasn’t involved in the study.
12-month supply of birth control pills cuts unintended pregnancies, cost When women are given a 12-month supply of oral contraceptives, they are less likely to have an unintended pregnancy than if they need to get refills every three months, a new study shows. Researchers also found that supplying 12 months of the pill to female veterans was more cost effective than doling out just three months of contraceptives at a time, according to the study published in JAMA Internal Medicine. The common practice of dispensing only three months of pills “is the norm and thought to be a cost saving measure to prevent wastage of medications that people don’t end up using,” said the study’s lead author, Colleen Judge-Golden, a Ph.D. student at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. “But the concerns about waste are overshadowed by the
potential savings from pregnancyrelated outcomes. A couple of days of not having the medication can lead to a pregnancy that is not desired.” While the study was conducted in women who had served in the military, “gaps in contraceptive use are common among women in the general U.S. population as well, and extended dispensing for short-acting hormonal contraception is an evidenced-based strategy to help women use these methods consistently when that is their goal,” Judge-Golden said. “As of 2019, 17 states and the District of Columbia have enacted legislation requiring insurers to cover dispensing of 12-month contraceptive supplies at an initial fill.” Judge-Golden and her colleagues used a computer model to look at the impact of reducing the number of times a woman
would have to refill her contraceptive prescriptions on the risk of unplanned pregnancies and cost. Data from the VA have shown that 43% of women who receive their oral contraceptives in three month increments experience at least one gap of at least seven days between refills over the course of a year of use. The average annual cost per woman was about $700.60 for the 12-month dispensing option, compared with $787.72 for the three-month dispensing option, which meant that on medication costs alone, the VA would save $87.12 per woman, which would add up to more than $2.1 million annually for the 24,309 women vets receiving OCs. The biggest cost savings would come from reductions in unplanned pregnancies. Annually, 149 unintended pregnancies were expected per 1,000
women with the 12-month option, as compared with 173 per 1,000 with the three-month refill option, for a total reduction of 24 unplanned pregnancies per 1,000 female vets per year. That reduction would translate into 583 unintended pregnancies averted each year if the VA adopted a 12-month dispensing option, Judge-Golden and her colleagues found. The researchers are hoping the new study will spark changes at the VA, “especially since female veterans have no access to abortion or coverage for abortion even in cases where (the mother’s life is in danger),” said the study’s senior author Dr. Sonya Borrero, director of the Center for Women’s Health Research and Innovation at the University of Pittsburgh and associate director of the VA’s Center for Health Equity Research and Promotion.

Border patrol discovers $5.3 million in an abandoned boat in the Caribbean After border patrol agents in Puerto Rico chased after a boat on Sunday, they found five duffel bags stuffed with $3.7 million (AUD $5.3million) in cash. US Customs and Border Protection agents and the DEA made the seizure after tracking the vessel that was traveling without lights from Puerto Rico to the US Virgin Islands. As authorities followed the boat, it made an abrupt turn back toward Fajardo, on the east coast of Puerto Rico, and landed near the Rio Fajardo. Occupants in the vessel could be seen unloading bags, according to the press release. As agents closed in, they fled the scene. “We remain committed to working with other federal and local law enforcement partners to detect and deter smuggling attempts throughout the Caribbean,” Johnny Morales, a director from the Caribbean

A toddler has died after plunging 150 feet from a cruise ship while being dangled out of a window by her granddad. The 18-month-old girl slipped from his arms and fell from the 11th floor of Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas ship. The child is believed to have fallen onto the concrete below while the ship was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The tot was rushed to hospital at around 4:30 p.m. local time yesterday. She was pronounced dead a short time later. According to the local Primer Hora website, the girl was from Indiana and on holiday with her parents and grandparents. Police have now launched an investigation and are trawling CCTV of the ship as well as interviewing passengers. The girl’s family have not yet been quizzed by detectives but police have said they believe the incident was a tragic accident. Elmer Román, of the local Department of Public Security, said: “Police have now launched an investigation and are trawling CCTV of the ship. “At this time (the Division of) Homicide is in place. It has not been possible to interview the family. “It is a very strong scene, very sad and tragic. “At one point, one of her grandparents… in an act of games, exposes the girl to the void and falls out of his hands.” The boat has a height of around 210 feet and the 11th floor will have been around 150 feet above land level when the vessel was docked.
There’s a 44 percent chance that one major hurricane could hit Caribbean, latest forecast predicts According to the venerable hurricane forecasters at the Colorado State University, there’s a 44 percent chance that a major hurricane could strike the Caribbean this year. The prediction, released in C.S.U.’s latest forecast on Tuesday, is 2 percent above the average of 42 percent for the last 100 years, C.S.U. said. For the U.S. coastline, the probability climbs to 54 percent, just 2 points above the average of 52 percent. C.S.U. estimated in its latest forecast that 2019 will have an additional 6 hurricanes (average is 6.4), 13 named storms (average is 12.1), 54.25 named storm days (average is 59.4), 20 hurricane days (average is 24.2), 2 major (Category 3-4-5) hurricanes (average is 2.7) and 5 major hurricane days (average is 6.2). The latest forecast is based on an extendedrange early July statistical prediction scheme that was developed utilizing 37 years of past data, C.S.U. said. “We anticipate a near-average Atlantic basin hurricane season. The tropical Atlantic currently has sea surface temperatures near their long-term average. Near- average sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic tend to be associated with near- average Atlantic hurricane seasons.” C.S.U. said the odds of the currently-observed weak El Niño persisting for the peak of the Atlantic hurricane season in 2019 have decreased slightly. If El Niño were to persist, it would tend to lead to more vertical wind shear in the Caribbean extending into the tropical Atlantic, tearing apart hurricanes as they are trying to develop and intensify.

Trinidad & Tobago set to decriminalise marijuana, joining other Caribbean islands In late 2018, Prime Minister Keith Rowley announced that the Trinidad and Tobago government would decriminalise marijuana as early as June 2019 — but with discussions continuing into July, the public is wondering what exactly this proposed law will entail and when it might come into effect. If the legislation is passed, Trinidad and Tobago will join only a handful of other Caribbean countries that have decriminalised cannabis in an effort to reduce drug trafficking, lighten the load on the judicial system, ensure religious inclusion and help boost local economies. The prime minister’s initial announcement came as a shock to many, as he had previously been adamant that marijuana law reform was not his priority. However, recent moves by regional territories like Jamaica and Antigua and Barbuda, as well as continual encouragement by the public and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), seem to have influenced his Cabinet’s stance on the issue. Many citizens regularly get arrested for marijuana possession in Trinidad and Tobago. While arrests don’t always result in incarceration, they do usually go hand-in-hand with a court appearance. Under the country’s existing legislation, possession of marijuana is subject to a fine of TT $25,000 (approximately $3,690 USD) and a five-
year prison term, both of which can be increased to twice the amount based on the quantity of marijuana found, as well as whether or not the accused has any prior convictions. In fact, you can be charged with possession even if found in a private space — such as a home or car — unless you can prove it was there without your knowledge. Decriminalisation would mean that cannabis possession for personal use will not lead to penalties. The attorney general, Faris al-Rawi, has officially finished drafting legislation which he says contains specificities such as the amount allowed per person and details of production and distribution. Decriminalisation, however, is not legalisation. Even if the new legislation comes to pass, marijuana will still be illegal to consume in public spaces and the penalties for this will most likely remain high. In his first press conference about the issue, Prime Minister Rowley stressed that his government was only focusing on decriminalisation at the moment. One major reason for the new legislation is its anticipated effect on local law enforcement and the justice system. By making a distinction between marijuana consumption and drug trafficking, the new law would, at the very least, unclog the backup in the courts by not prosecuting cases of personal consumption — and ideally assist in reducing trafficking levels.

Antigua PM hopeful of the establishment of a Caribbean bank
Prime Minister Gaston Browne St Kitts and Nevis (WINN): The establishment of a Caribbean Bank and Antigua and Barbuda’s wish to get first priority to purchase the Scotia bank branch in his country are two key issues Prime Minister Gaston Browne continues to push for. Scotia Bank is selling nine of its operations in several Caribbean countries to Trinidad-based Republic Financial Holdings Limited. The banks are in Guyana, St Maarten, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Prime Minister Browne is recommending that the OECS countries band together and purchase the Scotiabank branches in their countries as a united entity. So how is that proposal being received? PM Browne said, “…For some reason within the OECS we have not been able to get a consensus on the issue, so far to my knowledge it would appear that all of the other leaders have agreed to the Republic Bank deal. We have no difficulty with their decision they have right so to do, they have a
sovereign right to make their own decision, we can’t be angry with any decision that they would take but I see a great opportunity for the OECS countries to step up and to take control of the Scotiabank branches, form a new bank and probably call it ECAB, Eastern Caribbean Amalgamated Bank.” Prime Minister Browne says a Caribbean Bank with branches in the international arena would help alleviate the region’s correspondent banking problems. “Having a bank that would have a few billion dollars US in assets, because one of the problems is that within the corresponding banking space they do not like small banks that have less than a billion dollars in assets, they don’t think it is worth their while. So if we can have that Caribbean bank it could have branches in Canada, in the United States and in the UK where you have large Caribbean diasporas. And I’m quite sure that Caribbeaners in Canada, in the US and in the United Kingdom that they would be happy to do business with their own bank. And that very bank itself could then provide corresponding banking services through those branches.”

Amber Guyger’s attorneys want her murder trial for killing Botham Jean moved to new venue Fired Dallas police Officer Amber Guyger’s attorneys asked a judge Monday to move her murder trial out of Dallas, citing “media hysteria” surrounding the fatal shooting of Botham Jean. Guyger, 30, killed Jean on Sept. 6 inside his apartment when she was offduty but still in uniform. Authorities said she mistook his apartment for her own. She said his door was unlocked and she thought Jean, a 26-year-old accountant from St. Lucia, was a burglar. Guyger’s attorneys, Robert Rogers, Toby Shook and Michael Mowla, argued in their court filing that the “publicity surrounding this case has been prejudicial and inflammatory.” Jean’s death was international news and area media outlets published a stream of stories after his death. Guyger’s attorneys cited 297 articles about Guyger and Jean in their motion. Whether potential jurors are qualified to sit on the jury isn’t about whether they’ve heard about the shooting or even whether they know Jean or Guyger’s name. To serve, jurors can’t have an opinion about Guyger’s guilt or innocence. The trial is scheduled to start Sept. 23. Jury selection is slated to begin on the first anniversary of Jean’s death. Prosecutor Jason Hermus has not responded to the motion. State

Family claim police beat man while in custody A mother is demanding answers after an expletive-laced altercation between her son and members of a police team manning a checkpoint on Pretoria Road in Kingston 13 left him nursing multiple wounds and needing surgery to repair a broken jaw. The son, 31-year-old Ricardo Humphrey, is now a patient at Kingston Public Hospital and the family say the police claim that he fell and hit his face while resisting arrest. “I am giving the police the benefit of the doubt and accept that he fell and hit his face. But when I visited him in hospital yesterday I was asked to purchase a pin because his jawbone is broken, his nose bridge is broken, four of his front teeth were knocked out, and some of his jaw teeth are now loose. So the idea that he was injured from a fall doesn’t make any sense,” said Humphrey’s brother Kimorley. According to the family, about 3 o’clock Saturday morning, Ricardo was in a heated exchange with a woman at his house on Pretoria Road, metres from a police checkpoint in the St Andrew South police division, where a state of emergency was imposed on Sunday. The family said a member of the police team accosted Humphrey and chided him for his use of indecent language and an argument developed. It is alleged that the policeman slapped Humphrey across the face before putting him in handcuffs and indicating that he was being charged for the use of the indecent language and resisting arrest. Donna Humphrey said she was at her cookshop on Saturday morning when she was approached by a team of policemen who inquired if she was Ricardo’s mother. She said that when she responded in the affirmative she was told she should accompany them with a utility bill and a passport-sized picture to bail him. According to Donna, she was initially taken to Denham Town Police Station and later to the zone of special operations base in Denham Town where she was told that he had been offered bail in the sum of $20,000. “All this time mi never know that him was in the hospital. Is when the next police say to mi, ‘Yuh a go up a di hospital?’ is that time mi know. But how di police look mi see say something nuh right, even though dem tell mi say him drop and lick him face,” the woman said.
“merely because … [Guyger] is white and Mr. Jean was black, the incident must have been racial in nature.” They pushed back against that notion, saying Guyger mistakenly entered an apartment she thought was hers and had “no idea” who was inside. “There is no evidence showing that defendant knew that a black man lived in that apartment,” they wrote in the motion. “There is no evidence showing that defendant knew that a person in that apartment was smoking marijuana. And certainly, neither defendant nor her attorneys had anything to do with the discovery of marijuana in Mr. Jean’s apartment or the dissemination of this fact to the media.” The motion mostly cites area media coverage. But it also cites national coverage, which would have been seen locally, statewide and nationally, such as an episode of The View during one of the hosts, Whoopi Goldberg, said that if Jean had shot Guyger, Jean “would be somewhere hanging now,” according to the defense motion. “This is inflammatory and utter nonsense,” the motion states. “There is no known situation in recent memory where a black man is alleged to have killed a police officer and the suspect was lynched.”

Second couple sue after clinic ‘uses wrong embryos’
A US couple are suing a fertility clinic, saying the company implanted their embryo into a different woman. The woman gave birth to twins in March, only for DNA tests to allegedly show the babies were not related to her or even to each other. Anni and Ashot Manukyan have now taken custody of one of the children. Both the Manukyans in California and the unnamed couple in New York who gave birth to the babies are suing CHA Fertility Center. The company has not yet commented on the lawsuits. “CHA robbed me of my ability to carry my own child, my baby boy,” Anni Manukyan told a press conference. “Who wants to meet their child in a lobby of a hotel?” The second baby boy allegedly comes from the egg and sperm of a third, unrelated couple. Court filings reportedly say the birth couple ceded custody of the child, and that the clinic has made contact with his biological parents - although they have not come forward publicly. The New York couple - identified only as AP and YZ in the lawsuit to protect them from “embarrassment and humiliation” - gave birth to two boys who were not of Asian descent, as they are. Earlier signs during the course of the pregnancy also suggested something was wrong. Scans showed they were giving birth to boys, despite doctors saying they had used female embryos. Ms and Mr Manukyan had unsuccessfully gone through IVF in August 2018 using an embryo they thought was theirs. The pair say they were then asked to take a DNA test after the birth of the twins in March. Their lawsuit says the couple then discovered “much to their horror” that their son had been “implanted into a stranger that later became his birth mother”. The couple then had to fight in the courts to reclaim their child, after the birth couple gave him up. “What about the woman, you know? What is she going through right now?” Ms Manukyan told broadcaster CBS News. “Thank God we got our child back but she ended up with nothing.” The California lawsuit alleges negligence and emotional distress, as well as claiming CHA Fertility broke a state law preventing the use of embryos for any purpose other than that consented to by the provider. Conviction on that charge could reportedly carry a prison sentence of between three and five years.

Britain says Iranian vessels tried to block tanker in Gulf The British navy said it prevented three Iranian paramilitary vessels from impeding the passage of a British oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz early Thursday, a day after Iran’s president warned of repercussions for the seizure of its own supertanker. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard denied the allegations, saying if it had received orders to seize any ships it would have done so immediately. The incident came at a time of heightened tensions over Iran’s unraveling nuclear agreement with world powers, signed in 2015. Iran recently began breaching uranium enrichment limits in response to the Trump administration’s withdrawal from the agreement last year and its imposition of sweeping sanctions. In recent months, the U.S. has sent thousands of additional troops, an aircraft carrier, B-52 bombers and advanced fighter jets to the region. Washington has blamed Iran for a series of mysterious attacks on oil tankers — charges that have been denied by Tehran — and said it shot down an American military surveillance drone in international airspace. Iran said it downed the drone after it veered into its own airspace. The U.K. said in a statement that the British naval vessel HMS Montrose had been

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said “freedom of navigation should be ensured in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.” About 20% of all oil traded worldwide passes through the Strait of Hormuz from Middle East producers. Iran has periodically threatened to close the shipping lane if it is prevented from exporting its own oil. The U.S. sanctions have largely shut down its oil exports.
Mexico steps up raids on migrantsmuggling trucks, uses giant X-ray Mexican officials have captured more than 200 migrants hidden in trucks over the past two days, including dozens spotted by a large X-ray scanner huddled in secret compartments, as the country steps up a crackdown under U.S. pressure. Footage of the X-ray shows a ghost-like truck filled with the brightened silhouettes of the migrants - some sitting and others lying down - along two levels of the crowded compartments on Sunday. An additional 228 hidden migrants were found in a routine search of a soft drink transportation truck in the southern state of Chiapas on Monday, Mexico’s security ministry said in a statement. The apprehensions come weeks after the appointment of hard-charging former prisons chief Francisco Garduno as the new head of Mexico’s immigration authority, the National Migration Institute (INM). Under Garduno, the agency has made a number of high-profile captures of migrants smuggled in commercial vehicles. The weekend Garduno took office, INM found 800 people in four trucks in the eastern state of Veracruz. Mexico’s stepped-up

WORLD NEWS Financier Epstein pleads not guilty to sex trafficking charges involving girls American financier Jeffrey Epstein pleaded not guilty on Monday to charges of sex trafficking as prosecutors accused him of luring dozens of girls as young as 14 to his luxury homes in New York and Florida and paying them for sex acts. An indictment unsealed in federal court in Manhattan accused Epstein, 66, of arranging for girls to perform nude “massages” and other sex acts, and paying some girls to recruit others, from at least 2002 to 2005. “The alleged behavior shocks the conscience, and while the charged conduct is from a number of years ago, it is still profoundly important to the many alleged victims, now young women,” U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said at a press conference. “They deserve their day in court.” Epstein was known for socializing with politicians and royalty, with friends who have included U.S. President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton and according to court papers, Britain’s Prince Andrew. None of those people was mentioned in the indictment. Wearing dark blue jail scrubs, Epstein entered his plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Henry Pitman to one count of sex trafficking and one count of sex trafficking conspiracy. Epstein faces up to 45 years in prison if convicted. According to the indictment, the former hedge fund manager “intentionally sought out minors and
knew that many of his victims were in fact under the age of 18, including because, in some instances, minor victims expressly told him their age.” Epstein, who registered as a sex offender under a 2008 plea deal in Florida, has said in earlier court filings that his encounters with alleged victims were consensual and that he believed they were 18 when they occurred. Epstein will remain in jail until at least July 15, when a judge has scheduled a bail hearing. Prosecutors have said Epstein should be denied bail, arguing he poses an “extraordinary risk of flight” because of his wealth, private planes and significant international ties. Epstein was arrested on Saturday night at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, where he had returned on his private plane from Paris. Prosecutors said a search of Epstein’s mansion in Manhattan uncovered evidence of hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of nude photographs of “what appeared to be underage girls.” Berman encouraged other victims to come forward and contact prosecutors. The case is being handled by the public corruption unit of Berman’s office. Berman declined to discuss media speculation about people affiliated or associated with Epstein, telling reporters: “I urge you not to read
into that one way or the other.” Epstein first came under investigation in 2005 after police in Palm Beach, Florida, received reports he had sexually abused underage girls in his mansion there. By 2007, Epstein was facing a potential federal indictment for sexually abusing dozens of girls between 1999 and 2007. Epstein struck a deal, however, to plead guilty in 2008 to a lesser Florida state felony prostitution charge, and register as a sex offender. He served 13 months in a county jail, but was allowed to leave during the day to go to his office. Some of Epstein’s accusers have criticized that agreement as too lenient. Berman, the U.S. attorney, said he was not bound by it. Reid Weingarten, a lawyer for Epstein, told the magistrate judge on Monday that his client had led a “law-abiding life” since 2008, and the indictment appeared to be “essentially a do-over.” Prosecutors who helped craft the Florida agreement included Alex Acosta, then the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Florida and now Trump’s secretary of labor. A spokeswoman for the Labor Department declined to comment on Sunday. According to the indictment, Epstein would initially recruit victims to provide “massages,” which they would perform nude or partially nude. Prosecutors said the encounters

In the emails leaked to the Mail on Sunday, Sir Kim said: “We don’t really believe this administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction-riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept.” The emails, dating from 2017, said rumours of “infighting and chaos” in the White House were mostly true. Sir Kim thanked those who had offered their support, both in the UK and the US during a “difficult few days”, adding that it had “brought home to me the depth of friendship and close ties between our two countries”. The government has opened an internal inquiry into the publication of the memos. Police have been urged to open a criminal investigation into the leak. Born in South Stanley, County Durham, in 1954, Sir Kim attended Durham University where he read zoology. During a 42-year diplomatic career, he has specialised in national security issues and European Union policy. In 2007, Sir Kim served in Brussels as the UK permanent representative to the EU. He was the prime minister’s national security adviser between 2012 and 2015, dealing with issues such as the rise of the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria, Russian annexation of Crimea, the nuclear threat from Iran and the collapse of government authority in Libya. He became ambassador to the US in January 2016, a year before Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration.
American financier Jeffrey Epstein would become increasingly sexual, sometimes including groping and indirect contact with victims’ genitals, where Epstein would typically masturbate and ask victims to touch him while he did. Epstein paid girls to recruit new girls, to ensure a “steady supply of new victims to exploit” prosecutors said. Three unnamed employees, one in Manhattan and two in Florida, aided Epstein by arranging some of his sexual encounters, the indictment said. At a second court hearing on Monday, U.S. District Judge Richard Berman asked Assistant U.S. Attorney Alex Rossmiller whether other people might be charged. Rossmiller said no additional indictment was imminent but it was possible “down the road.”
Angela Merkel pictured shaking for third time in recent weeks
German Chancellor Angela Merkel German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been seen shaking for a third time in a month. Video footage shows Mrs Merkel trembling, shaking back and forth alongside Finland’s prime minister during a ceremony in Berlin. The trembling lasted over a minute. After the incident, Mrs Merkel said she was “very well” and there was “no need to worry”. A government spokesperson said she would continue meetings as planned. Mrs Merkel, 64, was last seen trembling two weeks ago ahead of a trip to Japan for the G20 summit. She told journalists at the summit she was fine. On Wednesday, the chancellor gripped her hands as she tried to control her shaking, standing alongside Prime Minister Antti Rinne. According to Focus.de, the shaking affected her whole body. She was first seen shaking last month during a welcome ceremony in Berlin for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Her office has repeatedly dismissed concerns about her health. Mrs Merkel is now in her fourth term as chancellor, a role she first began in November 2005. She has said she will leave politics when her current term ends in 2021.

WORLD NEWS U.S. State Department approves possible $2.2 billion arms sale to Taiwan The U.S. State Department has approved the possible sale to Taiwan of M1A2T Abrams tanks, Stinger missiles and related equipment at an estimated value of $2.2 billion, the Pentagon said on Monday, despite Chinese criticism of the deal. China’s foreign ministry expressed anger about the sale and urged the United States to revoke it. The timing is especially sensitive as the Washington and Beijing are seeking to resolve a bitter trade war. The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement the sale of the weapons requested by Taiwan, including 108 General Dynamics Corp (GD.N) M1A2T Abrams tanks and 250 Stinger missiles, would not alter the basic military balance in the region. DSCA notified Congress on Monday of the possible arms sale, which it said could also include mounted machine guns, ammunition, Hercules armored vehicles for recovering inoperative tanks, heavy equipment transporters and related support. Reuters reported last month that an informal notification of the proposed sale had been sent to the U.S. Congress. The United States has no formal ties with self-ruled and democratic Taiwan but is bound by law to help provide it with the means to defend itself. The United States is the main arms supplier to Taiwan, which China deems a wayward province. Beijing has never renounced the use of force to bring the island under its control. Speaking in Beijing on Tuesday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said U.S. arms sales to Taiwan were a serious violation of international law and a “crude interference in China’s internal affairs, harming China’s sovereignty and security interests.” “China is strongly dissatisfied and firmly opposed to this and has already made stern representations to the US side,” Geng told a daily news briefing. “Taiwan is an inseparable part of China’s territory and nobody should underestimate the Chinese government’s and people’s firm determination to defend the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and oppose foreign interference.” China urged the United States to immediately revoke the planned arms sale and end all contacts between the U.S. and Taiwan militaries to avoid further damage to Sino-U.S. ties and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, he added. Taiwan’s Presidential Office expressed “sincere gratitude” to the U.S. government for the arms sale. “Taiwan will speed up investment on defense and continue to deepen security ties with the United States and countries with similar ideas,” Chang Tunhan, a spokesman for Taiwan’s president, said in a statement. Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said in March that Washington was responding positively to Taipei’s requests for new arms sales to bolster its defenses in the face of pressure from China. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry confirmed it had requested those weapons and that the request was proceeding normally. The U.S. commitment to providing Taiwan with the weapons to defend itself helps Taipei’s military raise its combat abilities, consolidates the Taiwan-U.S. security partnership and ensures Taiwan’s security, the ministry said last month in a statement.
Montana man pleads guilty in $43 million fraud A Montana man has pleaded guilty to defrauding a Canadian financial institution of $43 million by posing as a legitimate business owner. Todd Capser entered the wire fraud plea in Manhattan federal court Tuesday. Prosecutors say the 47-year-old Billings, Montana, man defrauded a Toronto entity and tried to cheat nine other institutions of millions more. The institution was identified in a lawsuit as Third Eye Capital Corp. U.S. Attorney Geoffrey S. Berman said in a release that Capser posed as a legitimate businessman before flooding the financial institution with false information. Prosecutors say that Capser sought to engender sympathy, deflect questions and explain suspicious behavior by falsely telling some financial institutions that his daughter was dying from cancer. Sentencing was set for Nov. 8.
Trump ‘dossier’ author grilled by Justice Department watchdogs Federal lawyers probing the origins of the investigation of ties between Russia and President Donald Trump’s campaign have interviewed the author of a “dossier” that alleged misconduct between Trump and Moscow, prompting the lawyers to extend their inquiry. Three attorneys from the Inspector General’s office of the U.S. Department of Justice met in person in early June with dossier author Christopher Steele in Britain, said two sources with direct knowledge of the lawyers’ travels. The interview with Steele, a former top spy on Russia for Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service, or MI6, took place while Trump was in London for a formal state visit with Queen Elizabeth and a meeting with UK Prime Minister Theresa May. Steele’s dossier, made public in 2017, alleged that Moscow attempted to interfere in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and that there was potential collusion between Russia and Trump’s campaign, along with other unverified and salacious claims about the president. The Justice Department’s inspector general has been examining the earliest stages of an FBI investigation of Trump, his former 2016 presidential campaign rival Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, Russia and former Trump adviser Carter Page. Inspector General Michael Horowitz, whose office is an internal Justice Department watchdog, launched his probe in March 2018 amid allegations by Republican lawmakers that the FBI erred in seeking a warrant to monitor Page. Hong Kong leader says extradition bill is dead, but critics unconvinced Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Tuesday the extradition bill that sparked the Chinese-ruled city’s biggest crisis in decades is dead and that government work on the legislation had been a “total failure”, but critics accused her of playing with words. The bill, which would allow people in Hong Kong to be sent to mainland China to face trial in courts controlled by the Communist Party, sparked huge and at times violent street protests and plunged the former British colony into turmoil. In mid-June, Lam responded to protests that drew hundreds of thousands of people on to the streets by suspending the bill, but that did not stop demonstrations that shut government offices and brought parts of the financial center to a standstill. Her latest attempt to restore order did not satisfy many protesters who stood by demands that she completely withdraw the bill. “There are still lingering doubts about the government’s sincerity or worries whether the

The bill triggered outrage across broad sections of Hong Kong society amid concerns it would threaten the much-cherished rule of law that underpins the city’s international financial status. Lawyers and rights groups say China’s justice system is marked
by torture, forced confessions and arbitrary detention, claims that Beijing denies Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997 with the promise of a high degree of autonomy, including an independent legal system and right to protest, but in recent years there has been growing concern about the erosion of those freedoms at the hands of Beijing. Critics of the extradition bill fear Beijing could use it to crack down on dissent. University students who have been out in force during the protests denounced Lam’s comments. “What we want is to completely withdraw the bill. She is playing word games,” said Chan Wai Lam William, general officer of the Student Union of Chinese University of Hong Kong. Demonstrators have also called for Lam to resign as Hong Kong chief executive, for an independent investigation into police actions against protesters, and for the government to abandon the description of a violent protest on June 12 as a riot.

Royal baby Archie christened at private Windsor ceremony
This is an official christening photo released by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on Saturday, July 6, 2019, showing Britain’s Prince Harry, right and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex with their son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor at Windsor Castle with with the Rose Garden in the background, in Windsor, England The youngest member of Britain’s royal family, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, was christened at Windsor Castle on Saturday in a private ceremony — too private for some royal fans. The 2-month-old son of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex was baptized in the castle’s private chapel by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, head of the Church of England. Palace officials said that, in keeping with royal tradition, Archie wore a lace and satin christening gown — a replica of one made for Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter in 1841 — that was also used for his cousins Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. He was sprinkled with water from the River Jordan at an ornate silver baptismal font that has been used in royal christenings for more than 150 years. Archie, born May 6, is the first child of Prince Harry and the former Meghan Markle, and seventh in line to the British throne. His parents released two photos taken by fashion photographer Chris Allerton, including a black-and-white image showing the couple cradling a tranquil Archie between them, with the castle’s Rose Garden in the background. It was accompanied by a color portrait taken in the castle’s Green Drawing Room of the young family surrounded by relatives, including Harry’s brother Prince William and his wife Kate; Harry’s father Prince Charles and his wife Camilla; Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland; and Jane Fellowes and Sarah McCorquodale, the sisters of Harry’s late mother Princess Diana. Archie’s great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, did not attend the christening because of a prior engagement.

Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic to go public by year-end
British billionaire Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic British billionaire Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic plans a stock market listing by the end of the year, giving it the much-needed funds to take on Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin and Elon Musk’s SpaceX in the race to space. The company will list its shares as part of a merger with Social Capital Hedosophia Holdings Corp, a special purpose acquisition company, which will also take a 49% stake in Virgin Galactic. Branson founded Virgin Galactic in 2004 to cash in on burgeoning demand for satellite launch services and, eventually, space travel, a market long dominated by industry stalwarts such as United Launch Alliance - a partnership between Boeing Co and Lockheed Martin Corp. But since its early days, his ambitious timeline for taking customers into space has suffered delays and setbacks. In February, the company took a step closer to its goal of suborbital flights for space tourists when its rocket plane soared to the edge of space with a test passenger for the first time. Rival Blue Origin has launched its New Shepard rocket to space, but its trips have not yet carried humans. SpaceX last year named Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa as its first passenger on a voyage around the moon, tentatively scheduled for 2023. Hundreds of people from 60
countries, including actor Leonardo DiCaprio and pop star Justin Bieber, have paid or put down deposits to fly on one of Virgin’s suborbital flights. Some of Virgin Galactic’s ticket holders have been waiting over 14 years for their trip. A 90-minute flight, which allows passengers to experience a few minutes of weightlessness, costs about $250,000. The cost is expected to come down “dramatically” over the next decade as space travel becomes more accessible to common people, Branson told CNBC on Tuesday. “I think we can do it a lot quicker than aviation did it.” Virgin’s current reservations represent about $80 million in total collected deposits and $120 million of potential revenue. Social Capital Hedosophia’s chief executive officer, Chamath Palihapitiya, will invest $100 million as part of the deal and will become chairman of the combined company. “By embarking on this new chapter, at this advanced point in Virgin Galactic’s development, we can open space to more investors and in doing so, open space to thousands of new astronauts,” Branson said in a statement. The deal was earlier reported by the Wall Street Journal, which said the SPAC will invest about $800 million in Virgin Galactic for a 49% stake.

The New Orleans Pelicans announced Saturday that the No. 1 pick in this year’s NBA draft will not play any more at the Summer League in Las Vegas because of a bruised left knee. Many other agreed-upon deals remain pending, such as Kawhi Leonard’s signing with the Los Angeles Clippers and the blockbuster trade that will see Paul George join him via a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Silver says changes to rules on draft trades possible NBA Commissioner Adam Silver wants the hat game fixed. Mindful that it was awkward for draft picks this year who were selected by one team and had already been traded to another — but because of league rules, were unable to be introduced by their actual franchise for more than two weeks — Silver said a discussion at the league’s board of governors meeting Tuesday was about how to change that going forward. Several ideas are under discussion, including changing the rules about how and when draft-night trades can be announced. It could be earlier next season and not necessarily attached to the early July end to the moratorium on trades and certain signings. “We’ve got to fix that,” Silver said. First-round draft picks were issued hats to wear on stage at the draft, corresponding with the team that chose them. De’Andre Hunter went No. 4 overall, taken by the Los Angeles Lakers. His rights had been traded twice — first to New Orleans as part of the Anthony Davis deal, then to Atlanta. But since neither of those trades could be closed before July 6, Hunter wore a Lakers cap on stage. “We talk about being fan-friendly, and that isn’t fanfriendly,” Silver said. There are plenty of changes that will be under consideration in the next few months, including one about the rules regarding the start to the negotiating period for free agents. Silver said that was also a topic among the board of governors on Tuesday. For the draft-night-traded players,
it’s about more than the hats. Because some draftees couldn’t be part of their franchises before July 6, they were assured of missing the start of NBA Summer League. It cost a few players the chance to play in summer league at all, which disappointed many of them. That won’t be an issue next year, with Summer League in Las Vegas scheduled to begin on July 10, 2020, and long after the NBA’s new league year is likely to begin. So any draft pick that gets traded on draft night should, in theory, be with their actual team in plenty of time to take part in summer contests. But this year, it was an issue. “I was really Virginia’s De’Andre Hunter, right, is greetdisappointed,” Phoenix rookie ed by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Ty Jerome said. after being selected with the fourth pick Former North Carolina overall by the Los Angeles Lakers during forward Cam Johnson wound up the NBA basketball draft in New York with Phoenix after being drafted No. 11 by Minnesota. Jamaica’s ‘spoilt’ male sprinters need to work harder – Bolt
Olympic sprint great Usain Bolt sees struggle ahead for Jamaica’s men at the world championships, claiming the Caribbean nation’s “spoiled” young sprinters lack the discipline to train and the hunger for success. Bolt, who won eight Olympic gold medals and led Jamaica through a golden era in sprinting, said he felt motivation levels had fallen since his retirement after the London world championships in 2017. “I don’t think it is going to get any better because I think these youngsters are a little bit spoiled,” the 32-year-old told Reuters from his home in Kingston on Tuesday, pointing to their attitude to training. “I must say yes about that when it comes to sprinting in Jamaica right now on the male side. “When I was around I think the motivation was there and we worked hard and the level was high, but now that I have left the sport, I feel like it has dropped. “Not that I’m saying (it’s) because I left the sport, but now that I have left, it has dropped for me and Glen Mills, who is a top
Gold medalist Usain Bolt (JAM) of Jamaica bites his medal coach that I look up to.” The 100 and 200 metres world record holder’s comments echoed sentiments put forward by Jamaican sprint coaches Mills and Stephen Francis, who feel the nation’s male sprinters are not cutting it at the highest level. Bolt bowed out of London with a bronze in the 100m and suffered a hamstring injury during the 4x100 relay as Jamaica’s men’s team missed out on a medal for the first time since 2005 in Helsinki. The Jamaican men also had a disappointing Commonwealth
Games on the Gold Coast last year, picking up bronzes in both the 100m individual and relay events despite the relatively weak fields. Bolt was more positive about Jamaica’s hopes in the women’s events at the Sept. 28-Oct. 6 world championships in Doha, with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Elaine Thompson jointly holding the year’s best time of 10.73 seconds in the 100m. “Again I think that the females will do well,” said Bolt. “If we are going to fail, it will be on the male side, but I feel like the females will hold up their end and will do well, but we’ll see what happens.” Bolt said Jamaica’s women simply had more ambition and drive than their male counterparts. “It’s the fact the females, I must say, are smarter,” he added. “I personally believe that because they want to be rich ... They want to be great, they want to accomplish things in life so they work towards certain things. “They want to develop and go on to do big things. I don’t think that the males are there.”
Leonard, George officially join Clipper The Los Angeles Clippers signed free agent forward Kawhi Leonard to a three-year, $103 million maximum contract and officially completed a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder for Paul George. President of basketball operations Lawrence Frank announced the moves Tuesday but did not disclose terms of the deal, which have been reported by multiple outlets. It was originally reported that Leonard would receive a four-year, $142 million maximum contract. Leonard’s deal is actually for two years guaranteed with a third-year player option, according to multiple reports. That would allow Leonard, a 28-year-old Southern California native, to opt out and become a free agent again in 2021, when he will have 10 accrued seasons and be eligible for the largest possible extension. George, who the Clippers traded for to pair with Leonard, also has two years guaranteed and a player option remaining on his deal. Kevin Durant’s four-year, $164 million contact with the Brooklyn Nets includes a player option for the final year, according to multiple reports. ESPN reported that the Nets’ other big free agent acquisition, point guard Kyrie Irving, also has a final-year player option on his four-year deal worth $142 million. Durant can opt out of his deal after the 2021-22 season, which could give the Nets just two healthy seasons from the 10-time All-Star. He is expected to miss the 2019-20 season with a ruptured
Toronto Raptors forward Kawhi Leonard holds his NBA Finals MVP trophy as he celebrates during the championship parade in Toronto on Monday Achilles he suffered in Game 5 of the NBA Finals against the Toronto Raptors. The Golden State Warriors officially released point guard Shaun Livingston after he spent five years with the team. “We thank Shaun for his immense contributions, wish him well in his next chapter and look forward to honoring him at some point in the future,” Warriors cochairman and CEO Joe Lacob said in a statement. Livingston, 33, considered retirement earlier in the offseason but now intends to play a 16th NBA season. Veteran big man Mike Muscala kept his commitment to the Oklahoma City Thunder, signing his new contract with the team. Terms of the deal were not announced. Muscala had been given the option of backing out of his agreement after the Thunder agreed to trade George to the Clippers.
Alec Burks, who had also agreed to terms with the Thunder, was given the same option and decided to sign with the Warriors instead. Muscala, 28, has averaged 5.7 points and 3.3 rebounds in 15.9 minutes per game over 307 games. He split last season between the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers, averaging 7.0 points and 3.8 rebounds. The Boston Celtics waived forward Guerschon Yabusele. Boston selected Yabusele, a native of France, with the No. 16 pick in the 2016 NBA Draft. He played the next season overseas before coming over to play for the Celtics, but he has failed to make an impact. In two seasons in Boston, Yabusele played in 74 games (five starts), averaging 2.3 points, 1.4 rebounds and 6.6 minutes per game. He shot 44.2 percent from the field and 32.3 percent (21 of 65) from beyond the arc.
Alex Morgan, US women’s soccer team honored at The ESPYS
Alex Morgan, a member of the U.S women’s national soccer team, accepts the award for best female athlete at the ESPY Awards on Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles The U.S. women’s national soccer team celebrated its Women’s World Cup victory on both coasts Wednesday, honored with a ticker tape parade in New York City before jetting to the West Coast and collecting trophies at The ESPYS. Alex Morgan won female athlete of the year and shared the best team award with her soccer mates. “Sorry, but this is probably the second-best trophy we won this week,” Morgan said jokingly, hoisting her individual trophy. As she got up from the front row, Megan Rapinoe’s black tuxedo jacket opened and exposed part of her left breast, which was caught by cameras showing the in-house feed of the show. An ABC spokesperson said the show would be further edited for the Mountain and Western time zones. “I’ve dropped the F-bomb on every stage I’ve been on for the last three days, so we’ll just spare you that,” Rapinoe told the audience. Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks won male athlete of the year at the show honoring the past year’s top athletes and moments in sports. “This is all about hard work. When you believe in your dreams this can happen,” Antetokounmpo said. “Hopefully, if I keep working hard there’s more to come.” Comedian Tracy Morgan presided over the show at Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles. Alex Morgan thanked ESPN for its recent deal to televise NWSL games. “When the World Cup is behind us, it is the professional league that we need to continually lift up and grow,” she said. “Investment in women and girls should not only occur on the playing fields but in more storytelling of badass, amazing women who continue to show that we are more than just athletes.” Sandra Bullock announced the best team award, saying, “All those in favor of equal pay say aye.” The U.S. women’s team is suing to receive pay equal to their male counterparts. “Keep fighting for equality,” Billie Jean King told the team from the stage earlier in the show. Carli Lloyd informed the crowd the team had its hair and makeup done during the flight from New York. “We look pretty fabulous, I think,” she said. Lloyd added, “It’s been an incredible journey. Here’s to the next World Cup.” Other athletes acknowledged the Women’s World Cup victory from the stage, including Drew Brees, winner for best record-breaking performance. “It’s going to be in history forever,” new New Orleans Pelicans player Lonzo Ball said on the red carpet. “I don’t even watch soccer and I watched it. That means a lot.” Zion Williamson, the No. 1 pick in last month’s NBA draft, earned best college athlete honors for his one-and-done season at Duke. “Wish I could have stayed a second year, but I had other things to do,” a smiling Williamson said. The best moment award was shared by a trio of recent retirees: Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn, NFL player Rob Gronkowski and NBA player Dwyane Wade.
