FOREIGN INVESTMENT BOOMING IN NORTH AND MIDDLE CAICOS by Hayden Boyce Publisher & Editor-in-Chief
S
everal wealthy foreign investors have been purchasing prime real estate, including beachfront land, on the islands of North Caicos and Middle Caicos and building expensive luxury villas and other residential and commercial developments. Investigations by The SUN revealed that there has been a significant increase in land purchases and construction on those two islands in recent years, indicating that they are becoming a viable investment alternative to Providenciales which has traditionally been the development Mecca of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Information from various sources showed that most of the land sales are by private residents of those two islands, some of whom have sold their land for “close to and above a Pictured From L-R – Goldray Ewing, Force, Stephen Dean, Deputy Education- Hon. Chance for Change program launched in TCI
TCI can benefit from Caribbean police forces and enhanced community policing By Todeline Defralien Turks and Caicos Islands can indeed benefit significantly with help from Caribbean police forces and enhanced community policing, according to Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police from the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Stephen Dean. During an exclusive interview with The SUN, Mr. Dean said that having an exchange where TCI Police can go and learn from The Bahamas and other Caribbean Islands will enhance their policing. “I see that for the whole Caribbean. I wish that we were so united that we use to do it. The door is there and we have the Association of Caribbean Commissioner of Police, they meet every time and they share, but how does that trickle down to our officers getting that
exchange? We do it a lot of times with the United States...” Dean said regional police assistance from The Bahamas or Jamaica can make a difference in TCI. “One of the things that will benefits is TCI officers doing initial training in The Bahamas. I think that there is a group getting ready to go to Freeport but that is on the entry level scale, but how do you do on the supervisory level and getting them on the ground? There are some things that you can learn and when they took me on a tour (in Turks and Caicos Islands) I saw some communities that looks familiar and I know some of the things that we’re done with some of those communities (in The Bahamas), so maybe when you think about those points, if we can get them there and they can take some patrols with us and they can understand
some of the things that we do then that will help.” Furthermore, Dean said that policing various communities that you know are affiliated with gangs is a must for the police force. “If a fella thinks that he’s a bad man in this area we will know what to do. There are certain approaches that you can take to a fella, so you cannot just keep policing and saying that things are quiet (when) it is not quiet. You have to let the bad man know that things are not quiet and we have to have a conversation every two weeks, but you have to come to my office to have that conversation. There are things that we can do so that the guy can get confused and so you have to play a physiological thing with them. There is a lot of ways in policing; you have to be on the ground and that is why it is important that when you reach
Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police from the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Stephen Dean a certain level, you have good ground experience. You don’t spend all day in the office and then you come here to tell me, it is not in the book. Things change out there as it relates to decision making and you cannot go to any page in the book all the time because some of the guys in these communities are not going to understand the book,” he explained.
