CRACKDOWN ON ILLEGAL HAITIANS
he Immigration Department will be actively going after Haitians who are living and working illegally in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Minister of Immigration Hon. Vaden Delroy Williams has announced some tough measures to address the continuing problem of illegal Haitian vessels coming to the Turks and Caicos Islands. In a press statement following the arrival of a sloop on August 10th and another on August 12, Hon. Williams said he firmly believes that the pressure must be intensified on those persons who are facilitating the human smuggling of Haitians and harboring them. Hon. Williams stated; “A strong message has to be sent to the Haitians immigrants who are coming here and to those who are helping them to come here and stay here. The time will come to consider stopping the first-time work permits for Haitian nationals if this continues. In addition, I will meet with Immigration Enforcement officials and the top brass of the Police to formulate a strategy to find those illegal Haitians who were not apprehended and are still in our country. I think we all have a fairly good idea where these people are living. We simply cannot allow them to come here illegally, live here illegally and work here illegally. We have to find them and deal with them. Enough is enough!”

New Code of Conduct for immigration agencies The Ministry of Immigration, Citizenship, Labour and Employment Services, under the leadership of Hon. Vaden Delroy Williams, has commenced an initiative to regulate immigration services provided by persons in the Turks and Caicos Islands, through a Code of Conduct. It is being proposed that under this Code of Conduct, an gency wishing to offer such services, must register with the Director of Immigration after obtaining a business licence in the relevant category, in accordance with the Immigration Ordinance 2018. Commenting on the imminent introduction of the Code of Conduct, Hon. Williams stated: “There can be no doubt that immigration agencies have
played an extremely important role in our country over the years. However, the time has come for the Ministry to implement proper guidelines that will dictate the way Agencies interact with the Department. I am satisfied that this new system will of course strengthen and improve the structure and benefit all concerned.” Director of Immigration, Mr. Derek Been, said The Code does not in any way replace the provisions of Section 116 of the Immigration Ordinance 2018, but will rather act as a guide for Registered persons to be placed on the Register held by the Director of Immigration and the expectation is that such persons will adhere to the rules to be introduced.” More details of the proposed Code of Conduct will be outlined in
Minister of Immigration Hon. Vaden Delroy Williams future statements from the Ministry of Immigration, Citizenship, Labour and Employment Services.
