BEACHES FOR SALE? Parent company could fetch $4.5billion
S
andals Resorts International, which operates all-inclusive resorts throughout the Caribbean, including Beaches Turks and Caicos Islands, has reportedly restarted an effort to sell itself, according to people familiar with the matter. According to various international news agencies, including Bloomberg, the Gordon “Butch” Stewart-owned company could fetch as much as $4.5 billion in a sale, said one of the people, who asked not to be identified because the matter was private. Sandals “is exploring options to take advantage of the growing global demand for the brand,” a representative for the company said in an email, adding that the sale effort had been reported in 2017. The company declined to comment further. Sandals, whose website offers luxury vacations for “two people in love,” was founded in 1981 by Chairman Gordon “Butch” Stewart. The company is working with an adviser on the sale process, which would help resolve estate-planning issues, one of the people familiar with it said. The company operates 24 properties in the Caribbean under the brands Sandals, Beaches, Grand Pineapple, Fowl Cay Resort and Your Jamaican Villas. Its properties in The Bahamas, Jamaica, Turks and Caicos Islands, Barbados, Grenada, Antigua and St. Lucia, book more than 400,000 guests and host 6,000 weddings a year, according to a document reviewed by Bloomberg. In the all-inclusive segment of the
Beaches Turks and Caicos hospitality industry, guests pay a single price for lodging, food and other services. Large hotel brands, which had stayed out of the niche for decades, have begun to respond to demands of their frequent guests. Marriott International Inc. has
announced plans to offer all-inclusive packages following initiatives by Hyatt Hotels Corp. and Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. In 2017 it was also reported that Sandals
Resorts International was reportedly exploring strategic alternatives, which include a potential sale of the company. At that time, Sandals hired investment bank Deutsche Bank AG to explore the options.

New system of granting TCI citizenship -Turks and Caicos Islander Status Commission finally established A new and innovative system of granting status, other than by marriage, to persons who are not native to the Turks & Caicos Islands, is about to be implemented by the Ministry Immigration, Citizenship, Labour and Employment Services. The Turks and Caicos Islander Status Ordinance 2015, in establishing the Turks and Caicos Islander Status Commission, charged it with the responsibility of, among other things, reviewing applications in order that they might make recommendations to the Governor for the grant of Islander Status.
Sections 4(7)(i) and 4(9) guides that the Commission in considering whether an applicant qualifies for recommendation to the Governor, must consider any prescribed evaluation criteria which the Governor is authorized to issue by guidelines for the purpose of evaluating the merits of an application by awarding to or discounting an applicant’s credit based on his personal and occupational attributes as well as his potential value to the community. The Minister responsible for Immigration said this new system is timely, given the perceived weaknesses
of the present framework for the grants of Islander Status, most notably, the potential for lop sided increases in the Turks and Caicos Islander population by persons from one country or another outside of the Islands, thereby potentially shifting the balance of power radically from what is commonly referred to as the “indigenous” Islanders to the newly arrived immigrant population, in an unacceptably short period of time, and the ability for Government to influence the numbers, skills, qualifications, age, country of origin, and familiarity with the Islands of the newly permanently
settled migrant. The Minister would like to thank the department of Citizenship and Immigration for their hard work and dedication. Applications for the grant of Islander Status “otherwise than by marriage, may be made to the Governor by submitting such applications to the Secretary between only June 1 and September 30 of each year inclusively. Additional details about the Islander Status Commission will be communicated to the public in subsequent press statements.

20 new TCI police officers to be trained in Barbados Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting has welcomed The Premier’s recent announcement of the provision of funding to recruit twenty new police constables. The Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands has committed an extra $500,000.00 of funding to increase police numbers and Commissioner Botting says he is optimistic the country will benefit. “The Force Executive Team and the various department heads of the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force are very pleased with this development,” he said. “These twenty future Police Constables will join more than 277 Officers currently on the Force. We are hoping to receive a

Refrain from hookahs, vaping and e-cigarettes Residents of the Turks and Caicos Islands are asked to refrain from or limit the use of e-cigarette product such as hookah and vaping pens, given the recent findings by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the possible association between severe pulmonary disease outbreaks and the use of e-cigarette products. The advise came from the Department of Mental Health and Substance Dependence (DMHSD) within the Ministry of Health. E-cigarettes are devices that deliver an aerosol to the user by heating a liquid that usually contains nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals. E-cigarettes can also be used to deliver marijuana or other substances. Several Caribbean islands and countries around the world have banned the use of these products. While E-cigarettes have gained popularity as a “safer,” and increasingly more fashionable, alternative to traditional cigarettes, experts warn that vaping causes e-cigarette users to inhale dangerous quantities of cancer-causing
substances. Clinicians and public health personnel are being urged to make special inquiries into the use of e-cigarettes for patients presenting with lung related issues. In the neighboring United States of America, as of September 6, 2019, over 450 possible cases of lung illness associated with the use of e-cigarette products and five deaths have been reported to CDC. Thus far, no evidence of infectious diseases has been identified; therefore, the lung illnesses are likely associated with a chemical exposure. The investigation has not identified any specific substance or e-cigarette product that is linked to all cases. Many patients report using e-cigarette products with liquids that contain cannabinoid products, such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
recommended that the public adhere to the following recommendations:
•Youth and young adults should not use e-cigarette products. •Women who are pregnant should not use e-cigarette products. •Adults who do not currently use tobacco products should not start using e-cigarette products. •You should not modify e-cigarette products or add any substances to these products that are not intended by the manufacturer. •You should not use e-cigarettes in a public place as it is considered to be a tobacco product. According to the Tobacco Control Ordinance (TCO) 2015, a “tobacco product” means a product entirely or partly made from the leaf tobacco as raw material, which is manufactured to be used for smoking, sucking, chewing or snuffing. E-cigarettes, according to the TCO would be categorized as a smokeless Recommendations for the Public tobacco product. E-cigarettes do not While this matter is under investigation, contain smoke, however, they do the public is strongly urged to refrain expose others to secondhand emissions from using e-cigarette products. Premier Robinson updates public on ongoing cost of living survey by Hon. Sharlene Robinson Premier of the Turks & Caicos Islands
My government understands the need to get a good understanding of the cost of living and the need for the TCI cost of living report, since the cost of living makes a big difference in what a dollar can buy. This in turn makes a difference in a person’s well-being. It is therefore critical that we get a good understanding of what are the determinant factors of the cost of living in the TCI. This will help my government to be able to make some major policy decisions. As previously stated, the Department of Statistics is currently conducting the cost of living survey. This survey is conducted over a period of a year. The reason for this is to take into consideration seasonal adjustments etc. The results will highlight the average expenditure cost in the following areas:
Food and non-alcoholic beverages Alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics Clothing and footwear Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels Furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance Health Transport Information and communication Recreation, sport and culture Education services Restaurants and accommodation services Insurance and financial services Personal care, social protection and miscellaneous goods and services Take for example the category (Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels) – The cost of living survey will give
us an idea of the average cost of rent by island in the TCI. It will also highlight the cost of utilities such as electricity, gas and water. It is important that the survey is conducted so that we first get an idea of what households, etc. in the TCI are spending on and the cost of these expenditures. My government understand the importance of having the cost of living assessment, hence the reason why we have commissioned such a study. However, we have no choice but to work with the timelines given to us by the technocrats. We would love to be able to report on the cost of living today but the Technocrats are saying that they need at least 12 months to complete the survey and approximately 2 months afterwards to collate and publish the findings. It is their plan to have a Report presented by April next year. We believe
Premier Hon. Sharlene Robinson that such an important study must be done right and we urge the public to bear with us as this work is being undertaken. We are also asking that you cooperate with the interviewers if your household is selected to partake in the interview. We must always be reminded that with governance there is a process and my government like any other government should listen to and allow the technocrats to do their work based on the timelines given. We are pleased as a Government to have seen the need to ensure that this critical work is done.
Community policing to be strengthened The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force acknowledges it needs to enhance its relationship with all communities and building trust and confidence and this will be done through the introduction of Community Policing. Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting assured this will be in effect in the coming months during a press briefing on Tuesday September 10th. “We have to form and enhance our relationship with the community and build trust and confidence and this
will be done over the coming months with the introduction of Community Policing. We are absolutely committed to putting officers back into the community to form that relationship.” In addition, the Force will also enhance its service to victims of crime, in itself a positive way to build trust and confidence Botting added: “We are also committed to developing the leadership of the Force, for all levels through the Force. We need to invest in our staff to get to people to be the best that they
can be. We are going to enhance the service we give to our victims, in itself, a very positive and tangible way to build trust and confidence in policing.” Meantime, Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson noted that the relationship between the residents of these Islands and the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force is critical to discouraging criminality. “The manner in which our communities are patrolled by RTCIPF Officers has been reassessed and there are not only more boots on the
ground on foot patrol, but a strategic presence to ensure heightened security in communities that are hot spots for activity. Increasing the engagement between Officers and the community gives residents the opportunity to engage, inform and build relationships with those charged with their safety.” She said. According to Commissioner Botting, ACP Kenny Grant will lead Community Policing for the Turks and Caicos Islands.

today signals the importance that my government places on filling the necessary data gaps in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Quite often we are very motive in the Turks and Caicos and we speak as if we have information on how we feel and this here is going to help us truthfully understand the situation of those venerable in society and help us be more informed in the direction that we should take.” Robinson added that this training bring undertaken is a key component of the overall Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey process as it ensures that persons are equipped to collect the much needed data properly. She added: “Immediately I had to support because this is important for us especially as women and children in households in Turks and Caicos. Keloid Scars By Dr. Marsha Barnett What is a keloid? A keloid can be considered as a scar that does not know when to stop! It is an exaggerated response to injury to skin. When the skin is injured, the healing process usually results in a scar that is limited to the area of the injury. Most scars tend to be flat and appear less obvious with time. In a keloid, however, the scar tends to be larger than the original area that was injured, does not necessarily happen right after the trauma and tends to get larger with time. Who’s at risk? Keloids develop most often after trauma to the skin on the chest, back, shoulders, and earlobes. Although the mechanism by which keloids form are not fully understood, genetics and personal history are the two things that seem to dictate your likelihood of developing a keloid. Persons with darkly pigmented skin are more likely to develop keloids. In fact, persons of African, Hispanic, and Asian ethnicities are up to 15 times more likely to be afflicted when compared to Caucasians. Keloids are equally common in women and men
but are rarely seen in children. In some cases, the tendency to form keloids seems to run in families and if you have had a keloid scar from previous injury, you are more likely to get one in the future even after minor trauma such as ear piercing. Should you treat? The decision of whether or not to treat a keloid depends on a number of things. Some keloids may itch or become painful. They may also be present in cosmetically sensitive areas, such as the ears and chest, causing disfigurement or embarrassment. In these cases, its usually worth seeing your doctor to explore your options as treatment is advisable. Treatment options Dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and certain family physicians generally diagnose and treat keloids. There are a few treatment options: •Injections: Most commonly, corticosteroids are injected into the keloids to flatten the scar. This is safe and not very painful. Injections are usually given once every four to eight weeks and your doctor will most likely need to give between 3 to 6 treatments

Steroids can make the area lighter which may be a good thing in some cases as many keloid scars are already darker than the surrounding skin. The skin may also become thinner. LOCAL NEWS
Let us use the “monkey see, monkey do” concept to make our behaviours positive By Drexwell Seymour The monkey see, monkey do concept has been around for years. Before I proceed with this article, I am not implying that anyone is a monkey. The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that the behaviours of some individuals occur because they are doing what they see others are doing. With that said, I am suggesting that we capitalize on this concept and make something positive out of it. Our society is full of negativity and perhaps part of it is due to the fact that we are doing what we see others do without even thinking about the consequences or the reasons why we are doing what we are doing. Say something positive and uplift each other One thing I try not to do is to forward negative messages or videos about others. However, it seems as soon as we get a negative video or message we forward it to someone else and then he or she in turn forward that to someone else and soon it becomes viral creating a lot of negative vibes and ruining the reputation of others. Not all videos
and messages about individuals are accurate and even if they are correct, it should not be our business to forward negative information about others. Unfortunately, if no one denies or confirms the information on the video then the information is considered to be the truth. Wouldn’t it be nice if we discontinue forwarding negative messages and concentrate on saying something positive about individuals and organizations. What is even amazing though is that some of our leaders are guilty of this behavior and as a result their followers likewise do the same thing. Monkey see, monkey do. Wouldn’t it be nice if we discontinue commenting on the negative vibes? Why don’t we try this? Write or say something positive about someone or an organization and let it become viral. There is so much good about individuals and organizations but we are not encourage to say good things about others because of the negative side of the Monkey see, monkey do concept. It appears that negative news sell fast and are more interesting. Do we want a negative society? Do we want people to stop spreading gossip and rumours about you? If not, then start with you
by not enabling this kind of behaviour. Maybe others will follow suit. It is really amazing that most times we hear positive things about others is during a funeral or a memorial service after someone dies. Why don’t we make this type of behavior a part of our culture all of the time? If we say something positive, then we can uplift and encourage others. Because of the negative society, many people are afraid to venture into their calling because they are discouraged. However, if you uplift others, they will be encouraged. However, we are spending most of our time tearing each other down especially if we do not agree with their opinions. We are setting a wrong example for our future generation as they will behave the way they see their friends, parents and others behave. Therefore we must lead by example because monkey see, monkey do. Perhaps this is why some of our young people are out of control today. They see gangs being formed in other societies and they are doing the same thing here in Turks and Caicos shooting and killing one another. I am quite sure they cannot even tell you why they are doing what they are doing. They are just doing what they see others do.
Conclusion Given the fact that some behaviours are learned by doing what we see others do, we have an opportunity to change the behaviours of our society by our own actions. We can use the monkey see, monkey do concept to undo some of this evil and negative stuff that is taking place in our society. Stop engaging and promoting the negative information by not commenting or forwarding and hopefully people will realize you are not interesting in that type of information and will discontinue.
Where are the promised youth policies?
By Jamell Robinson
With Youth week upon us, under the theme “Igniting the Youth to Ignite the Future”, the question must be asked where are all the promised youth policies by our current administration? With so many unfulfilled promises, it makes you wonder exactly what we are igniting and how exactly are we going to ignite the youth for the future. Many of the promises are great and actionable ideas, but where are they? Where is the National Youth Policy that was last updated when Dr. Carlton Mills was Minister of Education? Where is the Jobs policy and Ministerial Portfolio with named responsibility for job creation? Where is the Progressive Youth Development for Real Change as stated in Pillar 4 of the Change Document? Where are the targeted
programs to encourage Youth Entrepreneurship which was to ensure real access to start up and expansive capital? Where is the Youth – Better You Program that was to have at its heart national volunteer service? Where is the Policy to ensure that youth of national age are allowed to serve on national boards which will allow them to have exposure to decision making at that level? Where is the Creative Arts Program that would encourage youth creativity? Where are the forged partnerships with the private sector to ensure that opportunities and programs are in place for our youth? Where are the partnerships which would ensure placement of youth on jobs in the public and private sector especially those students returning
from training overseas? What’s surprising is that many of the above promises were also outlined in the 2012 PDM manifesto –The Blue Print, so it is reasonable to think that 7 years later, many promises would have been started if not fully implemented , especially given our Premier’s long history with youth activism. This Administration’s stated philosophy in regard to our Youth is as follows: “Our philosophy is that in order for the youth to become leaders of tomorrow, they must be co-leaders of today. It is important that we create opportunities where they can serve and develop their talents, skills and identity.” There is a clear disconnect between what was promised the Youth of this country and what has been implemented in the past 3 years of this Administration. At a time when gun violence has taken the lives of so many
of our Young Men, we the people expect action and not a bag a mouth. Stay Blessed TCI,

Hartling Group hosts Fitness Week for staff members I
t was an intense, fun and rewarding week full of pride, determination and high energy as the Hartling Group embarked upon a very exciting staff initiative geared towards improving the general health and spirit of their valued employees. The Shore Club was closed for 10 days for some refresh projects and this provided the perfect venue for the mini-activities which included beach walks, tennis, yoga, basketball, running, bootcamp, meditation and fitness workouts inside the gym. Every day staff was provided with healthy foods, protein powders, water and hydration supplements. There was even a cooking demonstration seminar on how to cook healthy foods and make them taste even better. Pierre Beswick, VP of Resort Assets for Hartling Group, and mastermind behind the entire concept said the primary motivation for the event came after a few employees this year were hospitalized due to poor health issues. Many of the illnesses are a result of poor diet, lack of exercise, working in a high stress environment and generally unhealthy lifestyle habits. When asked about his favorite part of the week, Pierre Beswick said, “I loved my personal coaching sessions, and also the company pride demonstrated as there was an overlap with all three resorts mingling different departments all together. The most important asset we have is our human capital and it is so rewarding that we were able to touch so many lives in a positive way. Education about health and fitness and the mindset to take control of your body is knowledge that will last for a lifetime.”

Emmy Awards viewership plunges to 6.9 million people
The Emmy Awards plunged to a record-low viewership of 6.9 million, illustrating a collective shrug by the public for an annual program that celebrates the best of television and is designed to build excitement for a new season. The Nielsen company said the audience for Fox’s host-less show on Sunday was down 32% from 2018, which was previously the smallest ever. Tom Hanks to get lifetime award at Golden Globes
Cast member Tom Hanks attends the UK premiere of “Toy Story 4” in London, Britain, June 16, 2019 Tom Hanks, one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors, is to add another honor to his name with a lifetime achievement award from the organizers of the Golden Globe awards. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) said on Tuesday it would present the prolific actor and producer with its Cecil B. DeMille award at the Golden Globes ceremony in Beverly Hills on Jan. 5. The boyish-looking Hanks, now 63, made his movie breakthrough in “Big” in 1988, playing a teenager who wakes up to find himself in the body of an adult. He went on to win back-to-back Oscars and Golden Globes in 1994 and 1995 for his roles in AIDS drama “Philadelphia” and comedy “Forrest Gump.” “For more than three decades, he’s captivated audiences with rich and playful characters that we’ve grown to love and admire,” HFPA president Lorenzo Soria said in a statement. “As compelling as he is on the silver screen, he’s equally so behind the camera as a writer, producer and director.” Hanks’ next movie appearance will be in November as the much loved U.S. children’s television host Mister Rogers, in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” He also starred in more than 80 other movies, including “Sleepless in Seattle,” and “Private Ryan” and was the voice of cowboy Woody in the “Toy Story” animated movie franchise. The Cecil B. DeMille award is given annually to an actor, director or producer who has made a lasting impact on the film industry. Past recipients include Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey, Jeff Bridges and Harrison Ford.
Music mogul Berry Gordy accepts his award at the 48th Annual Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Gala at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel, in New York
Motown mogul Berry Gordy announces retirement at 89 The Motown mogul who launched the careers of numerous stars like Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross and Michael Jackson has announced his retirement. The Detroit Free Press reports Berry Gordy said he had “come full circle” at a 60th anniversary event for Motown Records on Sunday. The 89-year-old Detroit native built Motown Records into a hit-making music, film and television empire that shattered racial barriers and introduced the world at large to the sounds of R&B, soul and funk. Gordy sold the record label in 1988, but remained active, developing a musical and staying involved with the Motown Museum’s $50 million expansion campaign. Speaking about retirement, Gordy said he has “dreamed about it, talked about it, threatened it” for years. Director Lee Daniels also presented Gordy with the Motown Legacy honor.
‘Joker’ raises concern for U.S. movie theater massacre families Families involved in a 2012 movie theater mass shooting in Colorado have asked the studio behind “Joker” to help lobby for gun reform, expressing concern about the film’s portrait of a mental breakdown that leads to violence. In a letter to Warner Bros, the families of some of the victims also urged the company to end any political contributions to candidates who take money from the National Rifle Association (NRA) and to fund gun violence intervention programs. The letter does not ask for the movie to be withdrawn. But it says, “with great power comes great responsibility. That’s why we’re calling on you to use your massive platform and influence to join us in our fight to build safer communities with fewer guns.” The letter, seen by Variety and other Hollywood industry outlets, comes before “Joker,” starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Batman comic book villain, opens in U.S. movie theaters on Oct. 4. The movie won the top award at the Venice film festival in September and has won plaudits for its disturbing depiction of a social outcast who wreaks terrifying violence. Box office analysts expect it to take about $70 million-$80 million at the North American box office on its opening weekend. Warner Bros said on Tuesday that it had a long history of donating to victims of
Joaquin Phoenix poses at the premiere of “Joker” at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada September 9, 2019 violence, including those in the Colorado shooting. The movie studio added in a statement that its parent, telecommunications company AT&T Inc, had recently joined other business leaders in calling for legislation to address the issue of mass shootings in the United Sates. “Neither the fictional character Joker, nor the film, is an endorsement of real-world violence of any kind. It is not the intention of the film, the filmmakers or the studio to hold this character up as a hero,” the statement added. Twelve people were killed and 70 were wounded in 2012 during a midnight movie theater showing of “The Dark Knight,” also about the Joker character, in Aurora, Colorado, by a lone gunman who is now serving multiple life sentences. “When we learned that Warner Bros was releasing a
movie called ‘Joker’ that presents the character as a protagonist with a sympathetic origin story, it gave us pause,” said the letter, dated Sept. 23 and signed by five men and women. One of those signatories, Sandy Phillips, told the Hollywood Reporter in an interview that he feared that even one person who is “on the edge, who is wanting to be a mass shooter, may be encouraged by this movie. And that terrifies me.” Phoenix and “Joker” director Todd Phillips have defended the film against suggestions that it may encourage violence. “I think we all are aware of these issues and we’re concerned, and I think that’s why we talk about it. I don’t think that we can be afraid to talk about it,” Phoenix told entertainment website IGN in an interview earlier this week.

LIFESTYLE Obesity, drinking and unhealthy diet add to gout risk Behavior changes could potentially reduce a large part of the risk for developing gout, a U.S. study suggests. Based on data from more than 14,000 people, researchers calculated how much factors like being overweight, following a diet that isn’t heart-healthy, drinking alcohol or taking water pills known as diuretics contribute to high levels of uric acid, known as hyperuricemia, which is a precursor to gout. The findings “support the hypothesis that the majority of hyperuricemia and resulting gout cases could be prevented by modifying key risk factors in the U.S.,” said Dr. Hyon Choi, lead author of the study and a researcher at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. “Blood uric acid levels go up when people are obese, drink too much, eat certain things, or take diuretics, which leads to the increased risk of gout,” Choi said by email. “In contrast, blood uric acid levels go down if people lose weight or change their diet or drinking habits or stop taking diuretics, which would reduce the risk of developing gout.” Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that can cause severe pain and joint tenderness. Previous research has linked several modifiable risk factors to gout including: a diet with too much meat and sweets; obesity; diuretics to treat high blood pressure; and alcohol consumption. To see how much each of these factors might contribute to the development of gout, the study team analyzed data on a nationallyrepresentative sample of 14,624 U.S. adults who completed a series of health surveys from 1988 to 1994. People who were overweight were 85% more likely than those with a healthy body mass index (BMI) to have hyperuricemia, while obese people were 2.7 to 3.5 times more likely to have the condition, the researchers report in Arthritis & Rheumatology. They calculated that 44% of the hyperuricemia cases were attributable to excess weight alone. They also concluded that 9% of hyperuricemia cases could be prevented by following a heart-healthy diet, 8% were attributable to alcohol use and 12% to diuretic use. The study did not actually examine whether eliminating those risk factors prevented gout cases in a real population. Still, the results may point patients with gout in the right direction to do what they can to ease their symptoms or reverse the condition, said Dr. Michal Melamed, a researcher at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, New York, who wasn’t involved in the study. There’s a lot people can do even if they’re obese or overweight and struggling to shed excess pounds. “The take-home message is that the risk factors that they examined are modifiable - some of them are easier to modify than others, so individuals can decide what they think they are able to do,” Melamed said by email. “Some can start with eating less red meat or drinking less alcohol,” Melamed said. “If patients are on a diuretic, they can discuss the risk of high uric acid levels with their physician and see if a different blood pressure medication may be better for them.”
FDA approves Bavarian Nordic’s monkeypox vaccine The U.S. Food and Administration on Tuesday approved Danish drugmaker Bavarian Nordic’s Jynneos, making it the first approved vaccine for preventing monkeypox disease. Monkeypox is a rare viral infection that does not spread easily from person to person. Infections have until recently been limited to central and western regions of Africa, but cases have been reported in Britain last year and in Singapore earlier this year. The approval triggers the award of a “priority review voucher” from the FDA to Bavarian Nordic, which can be used to speed up review of a future drug application. The company said it planned to sell the voucher to a third party. The U.S. in 2003 experienced an outbreak of monkeypox, which was the first time the disease was reported outside of Africa, the FDA said. Monkeypox infections are similar to smallpox, but typically milder. The disease begins with fever, headache, muscle aches and exhaustion, and in some rare cases, can be fatal. The vaccine Jynneos was
also approved to prevent smallpox in adults who are determined to be at a high risk from such an infection, Bavarian Nordic said. The drug is made from a type of virus that does not cause disease in humans and cannot reproduce inside human cells. Smallpox was eradicated worldwide in 1980, but there is a risk that it could be used as a weapon of biological warfare. “Although naturally occurring smallpox disease is no longer a global threat, the
intentional release of this highly contagious virus could have a devastating effect,” said Peter Marks, director of the FDA’s center for biologics evaluation and research. Jynneos would also be a part of the United States’ largest supply of potentially life-saving pharmaceuticals and medical supplies for use in a public health emergency, the FDA said. The FDA, in a first, last year approved Siga Technologies Inc’s treatment for smallpox.
Warm freshwater can harbor dangerous parasite People who swim in warm freshwater lakes, ponds and hot springs should do their best to avoid getting water up their nose because it could transmit a deadly parasite, a U.S. case report suggests. Typically, the infection occurs when water enters the nose, and the ameba migrates from the nose to the brain. It destroys brain tissue and causes brain swelling, quickly advancing from symptoms to death. “Hold your nose shut, use nose clips or keep your head above water when taking part in waterrelated activities in bodies of warm freshwater,” Dr. Jennifer Cope of the CDC in Atlanta, who wasn’t involved in the case report, told Reuters Health by email. “A person cannot get infected by drinking contaminated water (with this ameba), and it is not contagious or spread from person to person,” said lead author Dr. Duc Vugia, chief of the California Department of Public Health’s Infectious Diseases Branch in Richmond. Bahamas government denies ill-treatment of Haitians The Bahamas government has refuted allegations that non-nationals are being mistreated in the wake of Hurricane Dorian and appealed to the international community “to seek trusted and credible sources of information” on the country. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Hubert Minnis administration had become “of a number of false reports circulating on social media about the mistreatment of non-Bahamians in the wake of Hurricane Dorian that affected the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama. “In particular, there is a video of purported violence by Bahamians against Haitians. It is a false accusation that this incident took place in The Bahamas,” the statement said.
It said that all residents evacuated from the affected islands requiring housing are in safe and secure shelters provided by the government and that the evacuees are provided with three meals daily as well as medical care, school placement for children and social assistance. “The government would like to reiterate that all residents of Abaco and Grand Bahama affected by Hurricane Dorian have access to social assistance, regardless of country of birth, nationality or immigration status. A number of private charitable organizations are also rendering assistance,” the government said, adding that its actions are in conformity with international humanitarian norms. “All repatriation exercises

The government continues to advise Bahamians and the international community to seek trusted and credible sources of information,” the statement added. Hurricane Dorian slammed into the archipelago on September1 killing at least 53 people and causing widespread destruction in Abacos and Grand Bahamas, the two islands severely affected by the category 5 storm that had been packing winds in excess of 155 miles per hour. Prior to the passage of the hurricane, The Bahamas had implemented a crackdown on illegal migration, particularly directed at people from Haiti. A Bahamian
immigration policy requiring that all residents carry passports has led to increased raids of shanty towns and other areas with large undocumented populations. Minister of Financial Services, Trade, Industry and Immigration Elsworth Johnson had earlier this month said that “strict instructions have been given to the immigration department that our concentration is on assisting with the humanitarian efforts to rescue and save lives regardless of place of origin, nationality or immigration status”. He said further, the authorities are obligated to, and will continue to secure the country’s borders, and all domestic apprehension exercises in the affected areas are suspended.
Haiti legislator fires handgun at protest, photojournalist injured A legislator from Haiti’s ruling party fired a handgun during a protest on Monday, injuring a photojournalist as anger rises over fuel and food shortages in the Caribbean country. Senator Jean Marie Ralph Fethiere stepped out of a white truck near parliament in the capital Portau-Prince after several protesters yanked open his passenger-side door while gesturing and yelling at the lawmaker, Reuters footage showed. Fethiere, wearing a black suit jacket and jeans, pulled out a handgun and fired several shots, sending the cluster of people around his car fleeing in all directions. He then got back inside the vehicle, which sped out of the parking lot. Associated Press photographer Dieu-Nalio Chery was injured in the jaw and would undergo treatment to remove what appeared to be a bullet fragment, the news agency said in a report, adding he was expected to recover. International media outlets reported a security guard was also

When asked about the incident, Fethiere told Radio Mega he had acted in self defense. A dispute between Haiti and a U.S. energy trading firm has caused power blackouts and fuel shortages in the nation of 11 million people, feeding anger at President Jovenel Moise’s government. The Western Hemisphere’s
poorest nation, Haiti long relied on fuel shipments from nearby OPEC member Venezuela, which offered cheap financing to several Caribbean nations to buy its gasoline, diesel and other products through a program called Petrocaribe. But the scheme fell apart last year due to economic turmoil in Venezuela, forcing Haiti to return to international markets and causing prices to rise.
Latin American neighbors agree to impose sanctions on members of Venezuelan government Latin American countries on Monday agreed to impose sanctions on some members of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s government as part of efforts to force him out of office but expressed reservations about any use of force. Colombian Foreign Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo said the measures would allow governments to freeze assets belonging to Maduro-linked officials within their countries, targeting those suspected of illicit activities, corruption and human rights violations. “This allows countries in the region to, through collective action, create the conditions for the Venezuelan people to live freely sooner rather than later. It’s a transcendental step of great significance in favor of peace and legality,” the Colombian minister said. Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido has been recognized as Venezuela’s leader by the United States and most Western countries since January, but Maduro retains the recognition of the 193-member U.N. Peru, Chile and Costa Rica have proposed an amendment to the Rio Treaty - a Latin American mutual defense treaty invoked by members of the
Organization of American States earlier this month in response to Venezuela’s political and economic crisis - to rule out the use of force. Many Latin American countries do not have legal mechanisms to implement sanctions or travel bans on Venezuelan officials, and the treaty could provide them with one, a senior U.S.
official said earlier on Monday. “It is not just an option for these countries, this treaty makes it an obligation,” Venezuelan opposition envoy Julio Borges told reporters. The Venezuelan information ministry could not immediately be reached for comment but it has previously criticized the Rio Treaty. The sanctions measure received 16 votes in favor from signatories of the Rio Treaty. Only Uruguay voted against and Trinidad and Tobago abstained. The Lima Group, which includes Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Peru said in a joint statement that they did not support a military intervention to oust Maduro. “We do not support any invocation to the use of force or military interventions,” Peruvian foreign minister Nestor Popolizio told reporters in New York. Borges said that U.S. President Donald Trump’s attendance at a meeting solely about Venezuela on Wednesday was a “clear sign” that pressure on Maduro would increase.

Jamaica’s completion of IMF agreements a major achievement, says PM Holness Prime Minister Andrew Holness says Jamaica’s successful completion of financial arrangements with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is a major milestone in the country’s economic history, for which all Jamaicans can be proud. “We have worked consciously, deliberately . . . we have worked with transparency. We have worked diligently to ensure that we meet all the targets that we have set for ourselves and this is a major achievement in our economy and our development generally.” Holness was speaking at a press conference held on Wednesday, as the IMF completes its sixth and final review mission under the Precautionary Standby Arrangement (SBA). The Prime Minister said Jamaica is now being viewed as an example of a country “that has successfully executed difficult economic policies.” “I feel a sense of accomplishment. The nation should feel proud of what
we have accomplished. The unions have sacrificed, the private sector has sacrificed, the people of Jamaica have sacrificed and we are now seeing the fruits of it but there is still much more work to be done.” He noted that the programme’s success signals to all stakeholders “that our system of Governance can keep its word, and that is very important for trust-building; it’s very important for policy credibility”. The Prime Minister said that the accomplishment was also due, in part, to the fact that the country had ownership of the programme. “We have passed our tests because this was Jamaica’s programme. This was put together by the Jamaican authorities and we agreed with our partners, the IMF, for their assistance, technical or otherwise and for them to speak truth to us when we deviated,” he pointed out. Holness expressed confidence
Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness that “with the IMF now out of the room” the Government can maintain the fiscal discipline that the country has committed to over the last ten years.
“I believe that the culture of fiscal responsibility has now become institutionalised, particularly in the Ministry of Finance (and the Public Service) and generally throughout the Government. Yes, we are happy we have achieved a major milestone, but it is not the end of our fiscal responsibility,” he said, noting that the country must now “transition into another level of higher responsibility”. Jamaica’s current programme with the IMF is scheduled to officially end in November. The country will, however, continue to benefit from technical assistance, and the Jamaica office will be maintained for an additional two years. Jamaica’s latest relationship with the IMF started in 2013 when the country entered into a four-year US$932 million Extended Fund Facility (EFF). This arrangement ended in 2016 when it was replaced by a US$1.6 billion Precautionary Stand-By Arrangement.
November 9th, 2019 new date set for CIBC FirstCaribbean ‘Walk for the Cure’ As a result of the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian, CIBC FirstCaribbean’s eighth annual cancer care fundraiser, “Walk for the Cure,” has changedfrom its regular date of October 5 toSaturday November 9, 2019. CIBC FirstCaribbean Customer ExperienceOfficer and Walk Manager Kizzanae Arthur explained that “in light of the recent impact of Hurricane Dorian, CIBC FirstCaribbean has decided to rescheduleour ‘Walk for the Cure’ as we focus our attention on relief efforts. We’re aware of the ways many of our staff from our Abaco and Grand Bahama branches have been affected and the toll Dorian’s impact is having on them, our clients, and The Bahamas as a whole.” CIBC FirstCaribbean officially launched this year’s “Walk for the Cure” campaign in August at Café Channing Noelle at Caves Village when an October date was given for the three “Walks” in Nassau, Grand Bahama, and Abaco. However, due to the disruption of Hurricane Dorian, only the Nassau “Walk” will now be held. The new date for the New Providence walk is Saturday, November 9, at 6:30am at the Goodman’s Bay Corporate Center. Vice President of the Cancer

Society of The Bahamas (CSOB) Rochelle Wilkinson, who attended the “Walk for the Cure” launch, said, “Cancer spares nobody, and we never know who’s going to be next. Therefore, we’re happy for initiatives like the walk that enable us to provide our services to people to
alleviate some of the stress that would be associated with taking treatment.” Helen Rolle, Secretary of the Sister, Sister Breast Cancer Support Group, added, “In our organizations, you always wonder where the next dollar will come from, but we thank God for
people who support causes like the ‘Walk for the Cure;’ because of them we’re able to extend a ray of hope to the wider community.” “Walk for the Cure” is CIBC FirstCaribbean’s largest cancer fundraising and educational initiative. The funds are used to provide assistance, care, and counseling to patients and their families, and also to raise awareness and stress the importance of early detection through education campaigns. At the launch, Managing Director (Bahamas & TCI) Marie Rodland-Allen announced the bank’s goal to surpass its 2018 total of $90,000 and raise $100,000 for cancer treatment and awareness throughout The Bahamas with this year’s walk. “That is still our goal,” CIBC Walk Manager Kizzanae Arthur said. “Fundraising efforts are still ongoing and we’re not slowing down. The eighth annual ‘Walk for the Cure’ is moving full-steam ahead, and we want all our loyal supporters to join us again this year on November 9 for a family affair, with activities, music, prizes, and various health and food vendors on site. You can visit any CIBC FirstCaribbean branch to sign up; or contact 302-6036 or 302-6085 for more information.”

Hot meals for thousands as BTC teams up with World Central Kitchen As thousands of Bahamians continue to be in need offood, water and shelter,The Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC), through the Cable & Wireless Charitable Foundation (CWCF), today announced its partnership with World Central Kitchen (WCK). BTC presented WCK with a check in the amount of US$25,000 to help the organizationwith the cost of providing meals to displaced families. WCK has been providing fresh meals throughout The Bahamas since just after Hurricane Dorian made landfall on the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama as a category five hurricane on September 1st. “This grant from the CWCF will go a long way to help us get food to those who need it the most. Many communities have been completely devastated and are in dire need”, said Erin Gore of WCK. “To date, we have served 280,000 meals to people across both islands, as well as to those currently living in shelters in Nassau.” “This grant to WCK is part of our broader humanitarian initiative in The Bahamas”, said Denise Williams, a Director of the Cable& Wireless Charitable Foundation and SVP of Communications at C&W Communications. “Our team visited the islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco immediately after the passage of Hurricane Dorian and have seen the devastation firsthand. Based on those reports we immediately initiated our response protocols. We will be supporting organizations such as WCKthat are working to help bring relief

CDB President calls for more investment and effort into MSMEs More investment and effort must be put into strengthening the enabling environment if the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector is to fulfil its potential and drive economic growth and social development in the Caribbean. This was the call coming from President of the Caribbean Development Bank, Dr. Warren Smith last week, when he spoke at the State of the Sector Conference hosted by the Barbados Small Business Association. “MSMEs are the backbone of the private sector”, stated the Bank president, noting MSMEs account for on average, “50% of GDP and create 45% of jobs in our Region.” However, he said, the “full potential remains unrealised” as their export levels do not match their share of the private sector or contribution to employment. He outlined several areas for governments, business support organisations and other stakeholders, including the Bank, to focus their
attention so as to “unleash this potential.” “Much work remains to be done” to create a business-friendly environment for MSMEs to grow and develop, urged the CDB head. He noted that the Caribbean had slid to 126 out of 190 in 2019 in the World Bank’s Doing Business rankings. This was as compared to 81 out of 181 countries in the 2009 survey. “In many Caribbean countries, there is ample evidence of inadequate legislative and regulatory frameworks, weak public sector institutions for providing legal protection, and inefficient business support and training services”. “In some Caribbean countries, for example, property registration continues to be time consuming and expensive, because property rights are not adequately defined or protected. Bankruptcy laws are often excessively punitive; and severe penalties can confound the willingness to invest in new business ventures,” stated Dr.
Smith. He also called on governments to speed up implementation of agreements reached under CARICOM’s Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas, noting that market access has not improved despite removing over 450 barriers to the free movement of goods, services, capital and labour in most CARICOM countries. He also highlighted that there is still no single jurisdiction to allow for the equal treatment of businesses across CARICOM. Access to finance is another issue constraining MSMEs; and here, he suggested several mechanisms, including credit bureaux; collateral registries, guarantee schemes and additional financing channels such as junior stock exchangest can be employed to improve this situation. The President stressed that CDB remains committed to supporting the development of MSMEs in Barbados and the rest of our Region. “Importantly, we, at the
CDB, are in the midst of preparing our strategic plan for the period 2020-2024; and the MSME sector is emerging as a critical area for strategic and focused attention in our Region’s ongoing efforts to achieve sustainable and inclusive economic growth, and eliminate abject poverty and inequality.” Since 2015, CDB has committed US$30 million and disbursed US$20 million to over 900 firms for private sector development and the President emphasised that the Bank was determined to increase its involvement with MSMEs. In this regard, the Bank had embarked on some innovative approaches to attract additional financial flows for its MSME programme. These approaches include the multi-donor Cultural and Creative Industries Innovation Fund (CIIF) which was launched in 2018 with start-up capital of U$2.6 million. CDB also plans to increase the use of guarantee schemes to reduce the risk spread in pricing loans to MSMEs.
Guyana Central Bank blanks sale of Scotiabank branch GEORGETOWN – The Central Bank of Guyana (CBG) says it will not sanction the sale of the operations of Scotiabank here to the Trinidad-based Republic Financial Holding Limited (RFHL). Governor of the Central Bank, Dr Gobin Ganga, has since communicated the CBG’s position to the two banks, citing a number of concerns. Finance Minister Winston Jordan said that the Guyana government had been made aware of the CBG’s position “and also the letter that was written to me, indicating that having done their examination and taking all the circumstances into consideration
that they [CBG] could not approve the application”. Jordan said that the matter had been brought to the attention of Cabinet on Tuesday, adding “Cabinet concurred with the Governor’s pronouncement and they agreed that the reasons given were important reasons and the critical one being concentration, the risks involved and so on, AML/CFT [AntiMoney Laundering and Combatting the Financing of Terrorism] considerations, the lack of supervisory capacity by the bank itself; they are now building that capacity and so on. “So when you take all of that into consideration, we did not feel that this application would be in Guyana’s
best interest,” he added. Ganga said that a complete evaluation of the takeover plan had been done and a decision was made not to grant approval to the proposed move. He said there were a number of factors that influenced the decision, including competition and concentration in the market. Last November, the RFHL announced that it was seeking to acquire Scotiabank operations in Guyana, St Maarten, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, and St Vincent and the Grenadines. The RFHL statement said that the purchase price is US$123 million,
which represents US$25 million consideration for total shareholding of Scotiabank Anguilla Limited; and a premium of US$98 million over net asset value for operations in the remaining eight countries. Antigua and Barbuda and Guyana had initially expressed reservations about the proposed acquisition, with St John’s indicating that it would not be issuing a vesting order to facilitate the move. The St Kitts-based Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) earlier this month announced that it had approved the application for the transfer of the assets and liabilities of the Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS) to the RHFL.

Nancy Pelosi announces formal impeachment inquiry of Trump House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who for months resisted efforts to launch impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump, announced a formal inquiry on Tuesday, saying that the president’s growing Ukraine scandal marked a “breach of his Constitutional responsibilities.” “This week the president has admitted to asking the president of Ukraine to take actions which would benefit him politically,” Pelosi said. “The actions of the Trump presidency revealed the dishonorable fact of the president’s betrayal of his oath of office, betrayal of our national security, and betrayal of the integrity of our elections,” she continued. “Therefore, today I am announcing the House of Representatives is moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry.” Pelosi said she was formally directing the House’s six committees that have jurisdiction over impeachment, oversight and other related matters to “proceed with their investigations under that umbrella.” “The president must be held accountable,” she said. “No one is above the law.” Pelosi’s change of heart comes as dozens of House Democrats — now more than two-thirds of the caucus — have come out in support of an impeachment inquiry in the wake of reports that Trump may have withheld aid to Ukraine to pressure officials there to investigate the son of political rival Joe Biden. The impeachment drive follows days of revelations surrounding Trump’s apparent push to have the Ukrainian government investigate the former vice president’s son Hunter

Israel’s Netanyahu given chance to form new government Israel’s president on Wednesday asked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to form a new government, giving the longtime leader the difficult task of breaking a post-election deadlock that has paralyzed the country’s political system. After a divisive campaign, Netanyahu called for a “broad unity government” with his chief rival former military chief Benny Gantz. But he faces an uphill struggle, with his future clouded by a likely corruption indictment and his opponents opposed to sitting with him. President Reuven Rivlin announced his decision late Wednesday after a second meeting aimed at brokering a unity deal between Netanyahu and Gantz ended without an agreement. Standing alongside Rivlin, Netanyahu said it was clear that neither his Likud party nor Gantz’s Blue and White could put together a coalition on its own, and that the only option was to band together. “The two of us cannot form a government unless we are together,” he said. “The order of the moment is a unity government, a broad national unity government that is formed quickly.” He said the country faced great security challenges, highlighted by Iran, economic challenges and the “great opportunity” of settling its borders when President Donald Trump presents an
Blue and White party leader Benny Gantz, left, Esther Hayut, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Israel, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attend a memorial service for former President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem expected Mideast peace plan. In a statement, Gantz appeared to rebuff Netanyahu, citing the Israeli leader’s legal problems. “Blue and White, led by me, does not agree to sit in a government whose leader is facing a severe indictment,” he said. “This issue, among a number of other critical factors, is more important to us than any delegation of ministerial posts or rotation.” Rivlin said his decision was not a solution and that both candidates were responsible for resolving the political impasse. “The Israeli people need to know that a government can be established,” he said. “It is true that everyone will have to compromise. But if a government is not formed, it is the citizens of Israel who will pay the greatest price.”
Rivlin said his decision was not a solution, and that both candidates were responsible for resolving the political impasse. Although Rivlin’s duties are mostly ceremonial, he is responsible for choosing the candidate he believes has the best chance of forming a coalition government. That is usually a straightforward task. But in last week’s election, neither Netanyahu’s Likud party nor Gantz’s centrist Blue and White secured the required parliamentary majority needed to form a government. According to final official results announced Wednesday, Blue and White finished first with 33 seats in the 120-seat parliament, just ahead of Likud’s 32 seats. Even with the support of smaller allies, both parties are short of the required 61-
seat majority. A total of 55 lawmakers have recommended that Netanyahu lead the next government, while 54 have lined up behind Gantz. Rivlin said that after exploring all options, he concluded Netanyahu had the better chance of forming a government. Netanyahu now has a preliminary 28-day period to try to broker a deal. But his odds of success appear to be slim. Both sides agree a unity deal is the only way out of the deadlock, but they have disagreed over who should head it. Gantz has repeatedly said he will not sit with Likud as long as Netanyahu is at the helm. Facing a likely corruption indictment in the coming months, Netanyahu is desperate to remain as prime minister. Israel’s attorney general has recommended charging Netanyahu with bribery, fraud and breach of trust in a series of scandals. Netanyahu, who denies any wrongdoing, is to appear at a hearing with the attorney general next week, after which a final decision on charges is expected. Legal experts say the likelihood of an indictment is high. Although Netanyahu would not be required to step down if charged, he will face heavy pressure to do so.

UK Supreme Court rules suspension of Parliament was illegal
In a major blow to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Britain’s highest court ruled Tuesday that his decision to suspend Parliament for five weeks in the crucial countdown to the country’s Brexit deadline was illegal. The unanimous, strongly worded Supreme Court judgment declared the order to suspend Parliament “void and of no effect.” The court found that Johnson acted to limit debate on Britain’s impending departure from the European Union in violation of Parliament’s constitutional role. Boeing to pay 737 MAX crash victims’ families $144,500 each Boeing Co (BA.N) will pay the families of 346 people killed in two fatal 737 MAX crashes $144,500 each from a $50 million financial assistance fund announced in July, the fund’s administrators said on Monday. The fund, overseen by Washington lawyers Ken Feinberg and Camille S. Biros, will begin accepting claims from family members immediately. Family members will not be required to waive or release the right to litigate as a condition of participation. The 737 MAX has been grounded since March after fatal crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia. Claims must be postmarked no later than Dec. 31, the fund said. Feinberg said Monday in an email to Reuters that “finding all of these heirs and making sure the funds will be safe and secure will be a real challenge since the families can be found in 35 foreign countries.” In a statement, Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg said the company continued to extend its “deepest sympathies” to the families and loved ones of victims of the twin crashes. “The opening of this fund is an important step in our efforts to help affected families,” he said.
Women mourn next to coffins during the burial ceremony of the Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET 302 crash victims at the Holy Trinity Cathedral Orthodox church in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, March 17, 2019. Boeing also announced in July it planned to spend an additional $50 million to support education and economic empowerment in impacted communities. Nearly 100 lawsuits have been filed against Boeing by at least a dozen law firms representing families of the Ethiopian Airlines crash victims, who came from 35 different countries, including nine U.S. citizens and 19 Canadians. Families of about 60 victims have yet to file lawsuits but plaintiffs’ lawyers said they anticipate more to come. Most of the lawsuits do not make a specific dollar claim, though one law firm has said its clients are seeking more
than $1 billion. The lawsuits assert that Boeing defectively designed the automated flight control system. The system is believed to have repeatedly forced the nose lower in both accidents. Boeing has said it aims to win approval to resume flights early in the fourth quarter. U.S. Federal Aviation Administration head Steve Dickson told Reuters last week it was not clear when Boeing will be able to conduct a certification test flight. But he said the agency should approve the plane’s return about a month after the test flight occurs unless something unforeseen turns up.
US marshals capture man accused in $1B Ponzi scheme A California man has been arrested over allegations that he and his partners ran a $1 billion Ponzi scheme that targeted people receiving pensions. News outlets report the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Future Income Payments LLC owner Scott Kohn on Saturday in San Diego. The 65-year-old has been on the run since March when authorities in South Carolina secured fraud indictments against him. Court filings say the company provided cash advances to veterans and others that would then be repaid by their pensions. Traders weren’t told the advances had interest rates that could top 240%. The upfront money came from investors who were promised up to 8% back on their investments. An April letter to investors says about 25 states are investigating or have taken action against Kohn’s company.
UK says bailing out Thomas Cook would have thrown ‘good money after bad’ The British government decided there was no point bailing out Thomas Cook as it would have been a waste of taxpayers’ money to throw good money into a business that was not meeting the needs of its customers, the business minister said on Tuesday. “There are all sorts of rumors flying, the fact is that 200 million was even an underestimate of what Thomas Cook would have needed just for the very short term, for the next week or two,” Business Secretary Andrea Leadsom told Sky News. “Thomas Cook is sitting on trying to service 1.7 billion pounds of debt, and it would have been a waste of taxpayers’ money to be throwing good money after bad,” she said.

Man dies, 5-year-old survives in apparent subway leap A Bronx man died and his 5-year-old daughter suffered minor injuries on Monday after he apparently jumped in front of a subway train while holding onto the little girl, police and witnesses said. The child was taken to a hospital in stable condition after the incident, which occurred at around 8 a.m. in front of horrified commuters at the Kingsbridge Road station

The father, identified as Fernando Balbuena-Flores, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene. “I watched as that train came around that corner and I saw as the man jumped and I see the little feet hanging out,” said a witness, Jennifer Hub, who described “at least 20, 30 people screaming” as the chaotic scene unfolded. Italy to take in 182 migrants from humanitarian ship A ship carrying 182 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean Sea said Italy has granted permission for its passengers to disembark in Sicily. The Norwegian-flagged Ocean Viking, a search-andrescue vessel jointly operated by SOS Mediterranee and Doctors Without Borders, picked up 217 people from four boats in the central Mediterranean from Sept. 17-19. The migrants had all departed from Libya. Malta, a European Union member, allowed in 35 migrants, but rejected taking in the 182 remaining on the rescue ship. Italy had also referred the ship’s request to other European nations before announcing Sunday evening
that it could head to the port of Messina. The ship arrived in the Sicilian port on Tuesday morning to disembark those who were rescued. They are mostly subSaharan Africans and include a newborn baby and 13 other children under the age of 15. According to the International Organization for Migration, 6,570 migrants have arrived in Italy by sea so far this year, and 2,260 in Malta. Both nations, typically the nearest arrival point for ships crossing the central Mediterranean, want other EU members to share the load. The 28-nation bloc hasn’t reached an agreement on an automatic system for determining
where rescued migrants are allowed to land and potentially seek asylum. Politicians in favor of blocking the ships accuse NGOs of colluding with smugglers. But data shows that most sea arrivals through the central Mediterranean do not happen through charity rescues. The IOM, which collects data at landing points in Italy, estimates that so far this year, half of the people arriving in the country by sea had been rescued by Italian authorities. Another 38,5% were people arriving in overcrowded wooden boats, and only 11,3% were disembarked after being rescued by NGO ships, according to the IOM.
Protests in Brazil as 8-year-old girl killed by police
Protests have erupted in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro after an eight-year-old girl was allegedly killed by police, as the number of victims in operations by security forces continues to rise. Ágatha Vitória Sales Félix was with her mother in a van when she was shot in the back in a poor area on Friday. Residents said officers had targeted a motorcyclist when she was hit. Police said they had responded to an attack. A record 1,249 people have died in such raids in Rio from January to August. Ágatha is the fifth child to die as a result of violence blamed on the police this year. Critics say the hard-line approach of Governor Wilson Witzel, who came to office in January, is behind the growing number of victims in the city’s poorest areas - favelas - many of them controlled by powerful drug gangs. Ágatha was going back home with her mother on Friday night in a van when she was shot in the back in Alemão, one of Rio’s largest favelas. She was sent to a hospital but died. In a statement, police said officers had responded to attacks from criminals, which led to a confrontation. An investigation has been launched. But Ágatha’s family disputed this, saying officers had targeted a motorcyclist that was passing nearby when she was hit, and there was no gunfight happening at the time. “A guy came on a motorbike and the police asked him to stop. He didn’t stop and left, he was unarmed, and the police shot. There was no confrontation, the only shot was [from the police],” the girl’s uncle, Elias, told local media. Her grandfather, Ailton, said: “They [authorities] will say that a child died in a confrontation. What confrontation? Was my granddaughter armed?” On Saturday, hundreds of residents protested, some carrying placards saying “Lives in the favelas matter” and “Stop killing us”. Other protests were held on Sunday hours before Ágatha’s funeral.

WORLD NEWS
New climate report says oceans rising faster, ice melting more Due to climate change, the world’s oceans are getting warmer, rising higher, losing oxygen and becoming more acidic at an ever-faster pace and melting even more ice and snow, a grim international science assessment concludes. But that’s nothing compared to what Wednesday’s special United Nationsaffiliated oceans and ice report says is coming if global warming doesn’t slow down: three feet of sea rise by the end of the century, many fewer fish, weakening ocean currents, even less snow and ice, stronger and wetter hurricanes and nastier El Nino weather systems. “The oceans and the icy parts of the world are in big trouble and that means we’re all in big trouble too,” said one of the report’s lead authors, Michael Oppenheimer, professor of geosciences and international affairs at Princeton University. “The changes are accelerating.” These changes will not just hurt the 71% of the world covered by the oceans or the 10% covered in ice and snow, but it will harm people, plants, animals, food, societies, infrastructure and the global economy, according to the special report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The oceans absorb more than 90% of the excess heat from carbon pollution in the air, as well as much of the carbon dioxide itself. The seas warm more slowly than the air but trap the heat longer with bigger side effects — and the report links these waters with Earth’s snow and ice, called the cryosphere, because their futures are interconnected.
This Friday, Aug. 16, 2019 file photo shows an aerial view of large Icebergs floating as the sun rises near Kulusuk, Greenland “The world’s oceans and cryosphere have been taking the heat for climate change for decades. The consequences for nature and humanity are sweeping and severe,” said Ko Barrett, vice chair of the IPCC and a deputy assistant administrator for research at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The report found: —Seas are now rising at oneseventh of an inch (3.66 millimeters) a year, which is 2.5 times faster than the rate from 1900 to 1990. —The world’s oceans have already lost 1% to 3% of the oxygen in their upper levels since 1970 and will lose more as warming continues. —From 2006 to 2015, the ice melting from Greenland, Antarctica
and the world’s mountain glaciers has accelerated and is now losing 720 billion tons (653 billion metric tons) of ice a year. —Arctic June snow cover has shrunk more than half since 1967, down nearly 1 million square miles (2.5 million square kilometers). —Arctic sea ice in September, the annual minimum, is down almost 13% per decade since 1979. This year’s low, reported Monday, tied for the second-lowest on record. If carbon pollution continues unabated, by the end of the century there will be a 10% to 35% chance each year that sea ice will disappear in the Arctic in September. –Marine animals are likely to decrease 15%, and catches by fisheries in general are expected to decline 21% to 24% by the end of century because of
climate change. And for the first time, the international team of scientists is projecting that “some island nations are likely to become uninhabitable due to climate-related ocean and cryosphere change.” “Climate change is already irreversible,” French climate scientist Valérie Masson-Delmotte, a report lead author, said in a Wednesday news conference in Monaco. “Due to the heat uptake in the ocean, we can’t go back. ” But many of the worst-case projections in the report can still be avoided depending on how the world handles the emissions of heat-trapping gases, the report’s authors said. The IPCC increased its projected end-of-century sea level rise in the worstcase scenario by nearly four inches (10 centimeters) from its 2013 projections because of the increased recent melting of ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica. The new report projects that, under the business-as-usual scenario for carbon emissions, seas by the end of the century will rise between two feet (61 centimeters) and 43 inches (110 centimeters) with a most likely amount of 33 inches (84 centimeters). This is slightly less than the traditional 1 meter (39 inches) that scientists often use. “Sea level continues to rise at an increasing rate,” the report said. “Extreme sea level events that are historically rare (once per century in the recent past) are projected to occur frequently (at least once per year) at many locations by 2050.”
Fogging against mosquitoes may have caused US diplomats’ illness in Cuba Fumigation against mosquitoes in Cuba and not “sonic attacks” may have caused some 40 U.S. and Canadian diplomats and family members in Havana to fall ill, according to a new study commissioned by the Canadian government. The incidents took place from late 2016 into 2018, causing the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump to charge that diplomats were attacked by some sort of secret weapon. Canada has refrained from such charges. The United States in 2017 reduced its embassy staff to a minimum and Canada followed more recently, citing the incidents and the danger posed to staff from what has become known as the “Havana Syndrome.” Various scientific studies have yet to identify the cause of the diplomats’ cognitive ailments, ranging from dizziness and blurred vision to memory loss and difficulty concentrating. The Canadian study by a team of researchers affiliated with the Brain Repair Centre at Dalhousie University
and the Nova Scotia Health Authority studied Canadian victims and even the brain of a pet dog after its demise in Canada. The study was the first to include diplomats for whom there was baseline medical testing from before their postings in Havana, so as to better compare with the tests from afterwards. Canada started implementing the practice after diplomats first started complaining of sickness. The researchers said they had detected different levels of brain damage in an area that causes symptoms reported by the diplomats and which is susceptible to neurotoxins. They then concluded that cholinesterase, a key enzyme required for the proper functioning of the nervous system, was being blocked there. Some pesticides work by inhibiting cholinesterase, the report said, and during the 2016-2018 period when diplomats became ill normal fumigation in Cuba was stepped up due to the Zika epidemic in the Caribbean.
Tourists in a vintage car pass by the U.S. Embassy in Havana, Cuba, November 1, 2018 The report said the diplomats’ illnesses coincided with increased fumigation in and around residences where they lived. One of the authors of the study, Professor Alon Friedman, clarified in an email to Reuters that both Canadian and Cuban authorities were fumigating. “We report the clinical, imaging and biochemical evidence consistent with the hypothesis of over-
exposure to cholinesterase inhibitors as the cause of brain injury,” the study concluded, while cautioning that other causes could not be ruled out and more study was needed. Friedman said it was not clear whether the broader Cuban population was affected by the fumigation and if not, why, but his team was planning a further study on this together with Cuban scientists.
Egyptian authorities round up hundreds after rare protests Egyptian authorities rounded up more than 400 people in response to an outbreak of protests against President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi over the weekend and security forces stepped up their presence in central Cairo, human rights monitors said. In a rare public display of dissent, hundreds took to the streets in the capital and other cities on Friday in response to calls for protests against alleged government corruption. The protests spread to the Red Sea city of Suez on Saturday, residents said. The demonstrators, shouting slogans calling on Sisi to give up power, were defying a ban on protests. Gamal Eid, director of the Arab Network for Human Rights Information, said more than 400 people in different parts of the country have been arrested in connection with the protests. “Our lawyers can’t keep up,” he said.
Mohamed Lotfy, director of the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms, put the number at more than 450 and the Egyptian Center for Economic and Social Rights said 516 had been detained. Sisi, a former army chief who came to power after the overthrow of President Mohamed Mursi, an Islamist, in 2013, has overseen a crackdown on political dissent that has targeted liberal activists as well as Islamists. Sisi’s supporters say the crackdown was necessary to stabilize Egypt after the 2011 uprising that toppled former strongman Hosni Mubarak. Plainclothes security officials have been stopping people in central Cairo and checking social media content on their mobile phones, several witnesses said. Internet monitoring group

Nissan recalls 1.3 million vehicles. What drivers need to know Nissan is recalling 1.3 million vehicles because of an issue with a backup camera display. The 2018 and 2019 Nissan Altima, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Versa Note and Versa Sedan are all affected by the recall. Also affected are the Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. From the 2019 model year, the
Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70 and Q70L also are affected. For the most part, this recall applies to the United States and Canada, but some of the cars that need to be fixed were also reportedly sent to Taiwan, Saipan and Israel. The backup camera display currently contravenes government safety standards: Right now, car
owners are able to temporarily change the car settings so as to not see what the backup camera shows, but then the settings incorrectly stay that way, and don’t revert back, the next time the backup camera display needs to be used. According to the company, Nissan dealerships will be able to fix the issue for free beginning Oct. 21.
Tech companies back independent watchdog to tackle online extremism A global working group set up by Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Microsoft to remove extremist content will become an independent watchdog working “to respond quicker and work more collaboratively to prevent” attacks like Christchurch, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Monday. Ardern has pushed for stronger action since New Zealand’s worst peacetime mass shooting in March, when a gunman attacked Muslims attending Friday prayers in Christchurch. He killed 51 people and broadcast the attack live on Facebook. “In the same way that we respond to natural emergencies like fires and floods, we need to be prepared and ready to respond to a crisis like the one we experienced,” Ardern told reporters on the sidelines of the annual United Nations gathering of world leaders. The Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism was created in 2017 under pressure from U.S. and European governments after a spate of deadly attacks. It will now become an independent organization led by an executive director, funded by Facebook Inc, Google’s YouTube, Twitter Inc and Microsoft Corp. Speaking at a joint news conference with Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, Ardern said the organization would be governed by an operating
Samsung’s folding phone hits the US
An employee holds the Samsung Electronics Co.’s Galaxy Fold for a photograph at a shopping mall in Seoul, South Korea Samsung’s folding phone is finally hitting the U.S. Samsung will start selling the Galaxy Fold, a phone with a screen that folds together like a book, on Friday. There will be an AT&T version as well as an unlocked version sold at Best Buy and Samsung stores. The South Korean tech giant had put the Galaxy Fold’s launch on hold for months after reviewers encountered problems with the device’s innovative folding screen. Some reviewers peeled back a protective layer meant to stay on the screen, other devices flickered and turned black. The nearly $2,000 phone launched on Sept. 6 in South Korea and Sept. 18 in France, Germany and Britain, with versions for next generation 5G networks available in the latter two countries. The U.S. phone does not support 5G.
Mr. Grouper Restaurant & Cafeterias New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern (R) and Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook and current chair of the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) board made up of company representatives and would have an independent advisory committee composed of government and civil society members. Ardern said some of the group’s work would be to fund and coordinate academic research on terrorism and violent extremist operations and on best practices for data sharing. Sandberg said the forum had already shared some 200,000 digital fingerprints “because when terrorists try to use one platform, they try to use all the platforms; so
when one of us find them, we can take them down across multiple platforms.” She added that while the fastest-growing messaging platforms were encrypted, Facebook was still able to combat extremism while aiming to protect users’ privacy. She noted that even though WhatsApp is encrypted, Facebook and Facebook-owned Instagram are not. “We are often able to find people on one and then take then down off the encrypted platforms,” Sandberg said.

Facebook suspends thousands of apps but user impact unclear Facebook said Friday that it has suspended “tens of thousands” of apps made by about 400 developers as part of an investigation following the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The announcement came the same day that unsealed legal documents in Massachusetts disclosed that Facebook had suspended 69,000 apps. In the vast majority of cases, however, the suspensions came not after any kind of serious investigation but because app developers had failed to respond to emailed information requests. Starting in March 2018, Facebook began looking into the apps that have access to its users’ data. The probe came after revelations that data mining firm Cambridge Analytica used ill-gotten data from millions of Facebook users through an app, then used the
violations that stemmed from the data to try to influence U.S. elections. It led to a massive backlash Cambridge Analytica scandal. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey’s consumer protection division had sought data on apps from prior to 2014, when Facebook announced changes to the platform to restrict access to user data. Facebook tried to redact the subpoena in negotiations before Friday’s ruling by state Judge Brian A. Davis. But Healey’s office fought to limit the redacted sections. Facebook did disclose that it had identified more than 10,000 apps that “show characteristics associated with higher risks of data misuse” but did not identify any of them.

Kyrie elbowed in face; no plans for KD this year Nets point guard Kyrie Irving caught an inadvertent elbow in the face during a pickup game at Brooklyn’s practice facility Tuesday and was sent to the hospital to be evaluated, but general manager Sean Marks said the team was just being cautious. “I wouldn’t even want to speculate at all, but I think it’s just a case of doing our due diligence,” Marks said, adding that coach Kenny Atkinson accompanied Irving to the hospital. “Kyrie goes and gets checked out like he would anywhere else and we always send staff with him, and it’s a great opportunity for Kenny, too.” Atkinson later told NetsDaily.com that Irving was “OK.” Marks, speaking to reporters at the team’s media day, also made it clear that the Nets do not plan on having Kevin Durant this season. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving were huge offseason acquisitions but the Nets aren’t planning on Durant playing this season believes the 10-time All-Star wants to play this season. Durant will have a say in determining when he’s ready, Marks said, but the team is taking a long-term approach and planning on him not playing. Irving and Durant were the two prize free agents the Nets acquired in a stunning transformation when free agency opened on June 30. Marks praised his new point guard on Tuesday, saying Irving has already shown leadership and intensity in the
team’s summer get-togethers. He said Irving has been “religious” in his participation in workouts at the team’s practice facility. Marks said he could already see camaraderie building between the team’s veterans and young players. Training camp officially opens for the Nets on Saturday. They’re taking part in the NBA’s preseason China Games, facing the Los Angeles Lakers on Oct. 10 in Shanghai and Oct. 12 in Shenzhen. The Nets open the regular season on Oct. 23 against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi speaks after winning the Best FIFA Men’s player award
Messi wins best FIFA player of the year for record sixth time Argentine Lionel Messi beat Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk and five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo to win the best FIFA player of the year award for a record sixth time on Monday. Messi, who won the Spanish La Liga title with Barcelona last season as well as the European golden boot having scored 54 goals in 58 games in all competitions, last won the award in 2015. He did not, however, enjoy success with the national team, losing in the Copa America semifinals to rivals Brazil. His win is somewhat of a surprise with Van Dijk, a center back who transformed Liverpool’s defense on the way to the Champions League crown, having won the European best player award. Messi’s win at the La Scala Opera house in Milan also marks a return to the dominance of the Argentine and Ronaldo, who between them have won the award all but once since 2007. U.S. co-captain Megan Rapinoe won the women’s top award after helping her country to the World Cup title this year in a tournament considered to be a milestone in the development and expansion of women’s football internationally. “I’m at a loss for words,” she said. “This was an incredible year for women’s football, for those who just noticed you are a bit late to the party. It truly was incredible, to be part of the World Cup, the enthusiasm we had was amazing.” Rapinoe, a strong off-the-field activist who also refused a potential visit the White House when the U.S. were on track to retain their world title, said players should use their success to help others. “I ask everyone here, lend your platform to other people, share your success. We have a unique opportunity to use this game to actually change the world for better. I hope you take that to heart, do something, we have incredible power in this room.” She beat fellow co-captain Alex Morgan and England’s Lucy Bronze. Liverpool’s Juergen Klopp was voted men’s coach of the year while U.S. national team coach Jill Ellis took home the best women’s coach trophy.
Florida football player who collapsed during Friday’s game is brain dead A Florida high school football player is brain dead after collapsing during Friday night’s game, according to the teen’s mother. After a group tackle, 17-yearold Jacquez Welch never stood back up. Paramedics rushed Welch to the hospital where doctors discovered a pre-existing brain condition that no one knew about. They say Jacquez was born with arteriovenous malformation, also known as AVM. It’s an abnormal
connection between the arteries and veins in the brain. Marcia Nelson, his mother, was in the stands when it happened. She said in a press conference Monday that her son is brain dead and his collapse had nothing to do with the sport. “I don’t want anybody to be scared of sports,” Nelson said. “It just happened to him at an early age, doing what he loved to do.” Nelson said the family is working on making her son an organ
donor to seven people. According to WFTS, the family plans to take Jacquez off life support Monday night after an honor walk. “I am content. This is not anything I could control,” Nelson said calmly. Nelson said Jacquez was a giving person and he would be proud that his organs will be used to save other lives. Nelson says football was his passion. He was also an older brother who served as a role model for his siblings. Jacquez Welch

Russia facing potential Olympic ban after WADA cites ‘inconsistent’ data
Russia is once again in danger of being banned from next year’s Olympics after the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) revealed that historical data supplied by the country’s anti-doping authority contained “inconsistencies”. WADA said on Monday it had opened compliance proceedings against the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) after examining the vast bank of historical testing data finally handed over in January. The news means RUSADA is in danger of being declared non-compliant by WADA a year after a suspension was lifted, which could put increased pressure on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to exclude Russia from the Tokyo Games next year for failing to ensure that its athletes are clean. Russia will already miss the world athletics championships for the second time in a row after the sport’s governing IAAF extended the ban against the country’s federation RUSAF on Monday. The IAAF confirmed the decision four days before the start of the competition in Qatar after hearing a report from its Task Force (TF) overseeing Russia’s reinstatement efforts. “We are aware of the allegations of manipulation of the data and that an investigation is ongoing,” said Rune Andersen, head of the IAAF Task Force. “In the light of that the task force recommended that RUSAF not be reinstated and the IAAF council unanimously agreed.” The WADA Executive Committee received a report from its

Jonathan Taylor, chair of WADA’s Compliance Review Committee, presented the information to the executive committee in Tokyo on Monday. It also said that 47 potential rule violation cases that had been
After Patriots release him in wake of rape charge, Antonio Brown says he’s quitting NFL
New England Patriots wide receiver Antonio Brown (17) watches from the sidelines in the second half against the Miami Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium. The Patriots defeated the Dolphins 43-0 Days after he was released by the New England Patriots in the wake of a rape allegation, star wide receiver Antonio Brown said on Sunday he was quitting the National Football League. “Will not be playing in the @NFL anymore these owners can cancel deals do whatever they want at anytime we will see if the @NFLPA hold them accountable sad they can just void guarantees anytime going on 40m 2 months will see if they pay up!” Brown said on Twitter. Brown was released by the Patriots on Friday less than two weeks after he signed on. The Patriots did not reveal the terms of Brown’s contract, but media reports said he had agreed to a oneyear deal worth $15 million, including a $9 million signing bonus.
Brown’s former trainer, Britney Taylor, filed a federal civil lawsuit in Florida on Sept. 10 alleging the 31-year-old raped her at his Miami home in May 2018 and forcibly kissed and sexually assaulted her at his Pittsburgh-area home in June 2017. He denies the charges. When the Patriots released him, the four-time All-Pro player had played just one game for the team after he was signed as a free agent on Sept. 9, just as the NFL season was starting. The Patriots did not give a reason for releasing Brown. But the decision followed a report in Sports Illustrated quoting another woman as saying that Brown recently sent her what she described as intimidating text messages after she accused him of making an unwanted sexual advance.

Alexander Ivlev, chairman of RUSADA’s supervisory board, told Interfax news agency: “WADA has given the Russian side three weeks to give explanations regarding the alleged changes in the database from the Moscow laboratory. Such an answer will be presented.” RUSADA director Yuri Ganus could not immediately be reached for comment. Travis Tygart, CEO of the United States Anti-Doping Agency, said it was “no real surprise” that the Russian authority was in the hot seat. “Let’s hope the hammer now comes down and that the entire process is not a secret back room deal but is
Stanislav Pozdnyakov, the president of Russia’s Olympic Committee, said the situation was “very serious” and could jeopardise Russia’s Olympic participation. “We have spent vast diplomatic efforts to regain the trust of the international sports community and for Russian athletes to have the right to take part in Olympics without any restrictions,” Pozdnyakov said in a statement. RUSADA had been ruled noncompliant by WADA following the 2016 report that exposed the country’s massive state-sponsored doping programme. Last September, the WADA executive committee voted to reinstate RUSADA before it had fulfilled the requirements laid out in a “Roadmap to Compliance”, which included giving access to the data stored at Moscow’s anti-doping laboratory. They missed the December deadline but an inspection team was finally allowed to retrieve the data in January, handing over more than 2,200 samples. WADA investigators performed analysis, targeting a pool of almost 300 of the “most suspicious” athletes before passing on the information to international sports federations to take measures against athletes found to have historical anomalies.
