he Turks a n d C a i c o s Islands’ economy remains “relatively s t a b l e ” and future projections are for continuous positive g r o w t h as both private and public Premier Hon. Sharlene Robinson s e c t o r capital projects that are currently in the pipeline begin to materialize. That assessment and forecast came from Premier and Minister of Finance, Hon. Sharlene Robinson, as she delivered the Fiscal and Strategic Policy Statement (FSPS) for 20202024 in the House of Assembly in Grand Turk. In laying the FSPS which sets out the Government’s areas for priority funding for its upcoming Budget, the Premier announced that there is no need now for UK Approval. “The TCI Statistics Department’s preliminary projections revealed continued positive economic growth over the period 2019 to 2021. Real GDP is forecasted to grow by 3.8 percent in 2019 and to dip slightly by 0.6 percentage points in 2020 and is forecasted to remain positive in 2021. This overall positive growth is attributed to contributions from the hotel and restaurant, construction and real estate sectors,” the Premier stated. “The construction, hotel and restaurant and real estate sectors are all projected to increase by more than 3 percent in 2019 and 2020 and is forecasted to experience positive growth in future years. The agricultural and fishing sector is projected to improve slightly by 2 percent in 2019, whilst the transportation, storage and communication sector is forecasted to realize the same degree of growth in both 2019 and 2020.”

Police officers being threatened Police officers are raising concern about being threatened by members of the public. Detective David Barnett, president of the Police Welfare Association Committee (PWAC) said they are “disturbed by news of threats and assault on our officers who continue to execute their duties without fear to keep the Turks and Caicos Islands safe”. Barnett said the year 2019 saw “unprecedented numbers of assaults and threats of serious harm against our members who continue to show restraint and remain professional in the face of

adversity, poor working conditions and low wages”. He added: “As recently as this past weekend the PWAC has yet again learnt of another attack and threats against our members, which also extends to their families. We are disappointed with the response from many quarters which is silence. This silence is deafening when our officers are assaulted or threatened by hoodlums and those undesirables of society. As Chairman of the Police Welfare Association (PWA), I want to remind our members that selfpreservation comes first and this PWAC

will do everything in our power to defend and stand by our members who have used justifiable force to defend their life, the lives of their family and the lives of law abiding citizens of these beautiful by nature Turks and Caicos Islands.” Detective Barnett said the association is committed to defend its members who have taken lawful actions to neutralize any threat faced by them, their family or members of the public. Efforts to get a comment from the Commissioner of Police were unsuccessful, at the time of this report.
