‘CRIME CAN DESTROY TCI’ Police Commissioner issues warning as new National Security Strategy launched

By Todeline Defralien

ollowing two murders in less than a week, and police officers being shot at while on patrol, Police Commissioner Trevor Botting warned that this level of crime has “the potential to destroy” the Turks and Caicos Islands, which has now launched a National Security Strategy to deal with an escalating wave of criminal activity. Commissioner Botting gave the assessment of the dangerous threat which crime poses to TCI, in a press release after a popular DJ succumbed to injuries sustained in a home invasion on January 13th, 2020, and in another statement after gunmen fired about 20 shots at his officers. “My thoughts and prayers are extended to the family and friends of the man who has now died from his injuries. We need to come together as a community and help stem the tide of criminality in the country,” Botting said. In addition to the brazen act of shooting at police, in recent months, there have been several home invasions and a few villas and hotel rooms have also been burglarised, causing a climate of fear throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands. “I share the anger about the lack of empathy and the persistent level of serious crimes that are currently taking place. There is also a lack of fear of consequences. The level of gun crime in 2019 was unprecedented; too much violence and far too much pain. We need to come together and think about the community, think about the harm this is causing the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the pain the families are enduring. We need to work together to reduce the levels of gun crime.” Botting said the public can expect a “more robust policing presence” over the coming weeks and months. “We will continue to increase response and patrols across Providenciales and I would ask the community to be patient and cooperative when stopped by my officers. To those who are committing the crime and harming our community, you are warned that my officers will be relentless in hunting you down to bring you to justice. If you threaten my

officers or members of the public, they will use all means necessary to defend themselves and the communities they are determined to protect,” he added. Turks and Caicos Islands Premier, Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson, also expressed deep concern about the level of crime and violence that is afflicting the country During a press conference on January 20th, 2020, the Premier condemned the violence that led to the first homicide of 2020 and used the opportunity to extend sympathy to the young man’s family, while bemoaning the loss of several of our young men over the past years as a result of these “senseless acts of violence”. Premier Robinson also, in the strongest terms, condemned the actions of criminals who engaged in an exchange

of fire with members of the Police Force and expressed her gratitude to God that no one was injured or killed. NEW NATIONAL SECURITY STRATEGY Meantime, while addressing the launching of the country’s first National Security Strategy, the Premier stated that it was critical to identifying “a list of threats (not exhaustive) that we can all put our resources, hands and minds strategically together to minimize its impact”. She added: “Today calls for a change in mindset for the government and the people recognizing that national security extends beyond the Governor’s constitutional remit of internal and external security and extends to areas of ministerial responsibility. Today we are

beginning what has begun to become commonplace for key government stakeholders, a critical coming together.” She noted that in the strategy, the authorities have identified nine threats that they will work at through our collaborative efforts and then through the agencies that have the direct responsibility. “As a small island nation, it should not be a surprise some of the threats and the reason why we believe that any of them can serve as a destabilizer for our country: The threat of illegal migration; Disaster(be it natural, major accidents or epidemics); Serious Crime; Critical National Infrastructure Failure; Serious Public Disturbances; Maritime Sovereignty; Food Security and Scarcity; Cyber and terrorism, Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism,” she noted.
