BACK TO NORMAL Hotels to reopen from July 6th, airports from July 22

fter experiencing two months of curfews and lockdowns that crippled the economy, the Turks and Caicos Islands will start rolling back to normal from next week when all retail businesses including hair salons and barbershops can reopen, followed by hotels on July 6th and airports for regional and international travel from July 22nd, 2020. Premier and Minister of Finance Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson made the announcement in the House of Assembly on Friday, May 29th, 2020, when she outlined a phased reopening of the country which was shut down in late March because of the COVID-19 virus. “Whilst we accept that the virus is here and that we may have slowed the spread, we equally recognize that we cannot stay locked away forever and must be prepared for the real fact that there could be an outbreak,” the Premier stressed. “I believe that once testing which is now available in country, once widened, we will see a spike in numbers and I want us to be prepared for this. This is why we must move with urgency but with care. I say with all sincerity that whilst TCIG coffers equally suffer, we cannot reopen phases without a plan to give us the best chance of building on our early gains and at the peril of our people’s lives. It is not an easy decision but it is a necessary and important, and yes, a right decision.” Premier Robinson added that assessments will be carried out at the end of each phase in order to determine whether it is safe and adequate measures are in place before consideration/ recommendations can be made to move to the next phase. “We reserve the right to roll back as well if there are indicators saying that it should be,” she stressed. The phased reopening will be as follows:

Commissioner Botting condemns fire AT Police HQ

ire officials were called to the Police Headquarters early Friday, May 29, 2020, to battle massive flames after a call to the Police control room that three cars were set on fire in an apparent arson. The facts are that around 2:50 a.m., an individual(s) entered a fenced-in parking lot and set fire to the cars. Commissioner of Police Trevor Botting said, “Two of the three cars that were

destroyed at the Police Headquarters came into our possession recently and were involved in an investigation. They were already processed and we had no further investigative requirements for them. The third car was a personal vehicle of an officer”. Commissioner Botting added, “An attack on the Police Force is an attack on the community and it is unacceptable. We will be conducting an extensive investigation to locate

and take action against those responsible through our CCTV system that is in place. I would like to appeal for any person in the community who does have information about this incident - anything at all – no matter how small to contact Crime Stoppers on 1-8008477 or call 911”. There were no injuries reported in this incident.

Former Deputy Chief Minister Hon. Hilly Ewing passes

Ewing passed away of the House of Assembly on Friday, on May 26th, 2020. He was 90. May 29th.
