What
is a “digital image?”
ď‚žA
digital image is an image that is created or manipulated through a computer.
ď‚ž In
our time, digital images are a large part of the images we see on a daily basis– on a computer screen, in the cinema, in advertising, in video games, etc.
Digital
images are constituted by points of light, which are generated by a computer as a combination of 1s and 0s. This is called “binary code” and it is the language of computers.
ď‚ž Digital
images became a reality in the 1980s, when computers first had the technology to create, store and manipulate images. ď‚ž These images were very simple.
With
the advancement of computer technology, we are now capable of creating much more complex images.
There
are TWO TYPES of digital images…
A
“BITMAP IMAGE” is made out of tiny points called “PIXELS”.
ď‚ž Each
pixel has a value of color and luminosity. When put together, the pixels, like a mosaic, form an image. ď‚ž When a bitmap image is enlarged, it loses quality and definition.
A
“VECTOR IMAGE” is formed out of basic polygons of colors that are grouped together through mathematical equations to form more complex figures. Vector images maintain quality and definition even if they are enlarged.
ď‚ž Bitmap
images lose quality when they are enlarged. ď‚ž The quality of the image depends on the number of pixels used to represent the image. This is called RESOLUTION.
ď‚ž Resolution
is expressed in PPI (pixels per inch) ď‚ž The larger the resolution, the larger the image file.
Project:
Draw your SPACE MOVIE character in pixels. Sketch the character on both the fine and large GRAPH PAPERS. 1) Simplify the image to fit the boxes (pixels) 2) Fill in the pixels with colors. 3) Notice how the higher resolution image has much more quality.
