We live in a three dimensional world What would the world look like if it were only in 2 dimensions? Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7y3R1cKSEM8&feature=related

In artistic representations‌ There are two types of REPRESENTATIONS: SUBJECTIVE AND OBJECTIVE Obser ve these two images. What dif ferences do you obser ve?

Subjective/objective Subjective works are an ar tist’s representation of their INTERPRETATION of an object. It describes HOW THE ARTIST SEES THINGS.

An objective work is the representation of a SCIENTIFIC REPRESENTATION of an object. It describes HOW THE OBJECT IS EXACTLY.

How do we represent the 3d world in subjective representations? In subjective works, we use dif ferent techniques to represent the 3D world on 2D paper. Like‌

Variation in size

Perspective

Aerial perspective

Superposition

Etc‌

How do we represent the 3d world in objective representations? This is called TECHNICAL DRAWING. We use what are called REPRESENTATION SYSTEMS.

Representation systems Are systems used to describe objectively any 3d object

In order to represent 3D objects on a 2-dimensional plane, we need to use PROJECTIONS

PROJECTIONS A projection is a way of translating information about a 3-dimensional figure onto a plane. Imagine that a light is shining onto an object, The shadow that it “projects” is it’s silhouette, or shape. There are two types: 1) Conical projection 2) Cylindrical projection

Representation systems There are four dif ferent systems of representation

1) Dihedral 2) Axonometric 3) Cavalier 4) Conical

1. Dihedral system The dihedral perspective is a cylindrical projection of 3 dif ferent views of a three dimensional object. The three views are the front view, profile, and top view.

2. Axonometric projection The axonometric system is another system of representation. The root ÂŤAXONÂť comes from the Greek word for AXIS (eje).

This system allows us to represent the object tilted (or inclined) on an axis on order to represent three faces of an object.

2. Axonometric projections Here are some examples‌

2a. Axonometric and dihedral The axonometric system and the dihedral system are frequently used together. -The dihedral system explains the exact measurements of an object. -The axonomentric system explains it’s three dimensional appearance.

2b. Types of axonometric projection There are 3 types of axonometric perspective:

2b. Isometric projection 1) ISOMETRIC This perspective is transcribed on an axis whose angles are all equal and measure 120ยบ each. For example:

2b. Dimetric projection 2) Dimetric: This perspective is characterized by an axis with two equal angles and one that is dif ferent. For example:

2b. Trimetric projection 3) TRIMETRIC This perspective is transcribed on an axis whose angles are all dif ferent. For example:

How can we SEE THE DIFFERENCE?

3. CAVALIER projection Cavalier perspective is similar to axonometric, except one face of the object is parallel to the picture plane. For example:

can YOU SEE THE DIFFERENCE? …between AXONOMETRIC and CAVALIER projections?
