MINTSTUDENTDESIGNANNUAL2017VOL.III
2 character design
Now in its seventh year, MINT College continues with its commitment to build an educational institution that fosters creativity and collaboration within a supportive community. It is a school that allows students to exercise their imaginations and personal interests while framing the individual explorations in practical terms with tangible output. All our programs follow this philosophy. Virtually every class is a lesson in “learning by doing”. MINT’s Multimedia Arts program is built around a modern communications design practice. Contrary to the name of the program, the students are taught not to focus on the medium of execution but rather on understanding the communications objectives of the problem presented; the behavior of the audience they intend to reach and then refining a concept as a solution. The class project requirements reflect this more thoughtful process as opposed to exercises that simply teach craft skills.
FOREWORD
PREVUE is the Annual Student Honor Show. It is a showcase of the best work done by MINT students of all year levels produced over the previous school year. It includes creative work from the various programs but it is primarily the output of Multimedia Arts classes and students. The Design Annual moves select work from the panels on the wall exhibited during the show to the pages you have in your hand. As further acknowledgement of the quality of the student’s work, MINT College won 5 of the 7 adobo Design Awards for the Student Category – winning the gold, along with two silver and two bronze prizes. We received a total of 9 nominations, the most of any single educational institution. This is inarguable validation of the philosophy of the school and the direction of the program, the skill and dedication of our teachers; and last but not the least, the exceptional capabilities of our students. We invite you to peek in to the imaginative minds of the best of our students and see the amazing things they have conceived and crafted.

/DESIGN SYSTEMS Over a semester, a student is tasked to develop a Brand Identity System - a process that will require: multiple possible logos and variants; applications ranging from signage and packaging to uniforms and vehicle graphics; and a comprehensive graphic standards manual that will bring all of it together. The development of a visual design standards manual is often a landmark project for a professional graphic designer, this class seeks to mimic that experience in the safety of a classroom and with the support of a talented instructor. /PRODUCT + PACKAGING DESIGN The students were tasked to generate original concepts for a soft to y that provides developmental and/or educational benefits for children. Once the product is designed and executed, the students developed the packaging and the pointof-purchase displays for it. The students learned to approach their design solutions in a modular and three-dimensional mindset wherein each project component must interplay wi th each other. The course requires the students to manipulate different materials while furthering their craft and hand skills. They also develop a practical understanding of topics such as substrate specifications, patterns and die cuts, orthographic drawings and scale models.

A review and careful curatorship of the students' collected work from their upper level Multimedia Arts classes and their freelance projects were carried out in order to identify which should be included or improved. Students were then tasked to develop portfolio concepts that reflected their personalities while clearly communicating their professional goals. The culminating event was a Portfolio Sh ow attended by industry professionals, who then review ed the students' portfolios and extended actual employment opportunities after graduation.
