Concept:

A multi- purpose running collection for female trail runners.

Designing a running collection that suits the purpose for both trail-running and training. Made for purpose, the functionality of the garments would be to suit the climate of the chosen location and its following conditions - ensuring consumer’s comfort and performance. The collection is to be worn both during trail running season and off as training gear, therefore the involvement of adaptability fitting the purpose for the training and the trail running which would lead to the design process whereby design decisions and experimentations will be in response to existing problems and requirements faced by the target consumer. Considerations to the adaptability and functionality of the garments would be made in order to suit the climate of the chosen location and its conditions, in which tailoring to the consumer to ensure comfortability and performance. References shall be made to the Adidas’ products designed for the Asian market, as well as connecting with women who are involved in the trail running community in order to gather in depth insight.

About Trail-Running: Trail running is a sport activity which combines running where there are steep gradients. Unlike road running and track running it generally takes place on hiking trails, often in mountainous terrain, where there can be much larger ascents and descents.

Highlighted Areas of Consideration:

The number of organisations trail races have grown over the past few years throughout the world. Runners often cite less impact stress compared to road running, as well as the landscape and non-urban environment, as primary reasons for preferring trail runnings. Trail running races are organised globally involving various numbers of distances from 5km, to over 150km.

•Fabrication technology- UV protection, moisture control, breathability.

Needed in Trail Running:

•Analysis of Movement- This would ensure suitability for the fabric.

Wicking garments, water-bottles, sunscreen, insect repellent, headlamps. There are many racing vests that are lightweight alternative which allow runners the choice of reservoir based bladder or water-bottles while carrying other items such as nutrition, hydration supplements and belongings.

•Comfortability- through garment construction, through fabrication, through trial testing. •Visibility and Branding- ensure safety. Garments in the Collection: •Gilet •Shorts •Sports Bra

Location: Hong Kong

The collage of images below demonstrates how Hong Kong is a location which intertwines city and nature creating the theme of combining a running collection that’s fit for both running in the city and running in the wilderness.

(hk.gov.com)

The choice of the location stems from targeting the Chinese market, other than city running it came to interest that Hong Kong known for being a concrete jungle can also attract runners to its trail running routes. Through research, it came to be that trail-running does not have their own gear despite being a sport with specific needs. Hong Kong is a city which deals with higher temperatures and strong humidity, the images above shows women trail-runners in their gear in which used to analyse and apply to my own design research. The purpose for their choice of clothing is not only to keep cool and comfortable but most importantly being hands-free.

Emma Lam | Adidas | UAL: LCF Fashion Sportswear | 2019

Design Inspiration: The following mood board reflects the research into construction, texture and layering. As location experiences hotter and humid weather it is important to investigate fabrication, its properties and its placement on the garment. The first section of images are of military chest rigs used for extra storage, and will be the basis of design for the gilet (seen on the next page), as trail runners are often running for a long period of time room for essentials is a must. The second collection of images explore existing sportswear garments, analysing its functional use. Understanding fit and colour which are thought as trendy will also be looked into, as well as, developing functions to fit trail-runners.

Initial Development Sketches - Shorts & Sports Bra:

Emma Lam | Adidas | UAL: LCF Fashion Sportswear | 2019

Initial Development Sketches - Gilet: The sketches below experiments with silhouette and shape as well as the placement of pockets and fastenings. The first gilet sketch plays around the idea of interchangeable sections within the garment whereby the bottom can be taken off to be used on its own or with the garment depends on the amount of storage needed for the consumer.

Using ideas from the initial sketches, it was then experimented in 3D starting off with a running gilet as the foundation of the garment. The running gilet has a elasticated back pocket helping with the storage of belongings but also tailoring the fit, as well as a ribbed collar sitting taller at the nape of the neck to provide sun protection. The second part to the gilet had been designed as a 2-in-1 for extra storage in terms of water-bottles and trail-running essentials. It relies on the velcro tabs located in the back for the garment to stay in position, and by having a design like this ensures ventilation and also less bulk.

CONCEPT

The garments you choose to wear have a psychological impact on your motivation to run, it’s important to look and feel the part. Elegance within women’s running clothing is currently shown by over exaggerating the private areas (bust and bum). Many women do not feel comfortable wearing these types of garments however, they still want to look good. My project concept is elegance within fit for purpose running clothing, A modern definition of elegance is coming back into fashion. The cut and fit of my garments will be inspired by couture Balenciaga combined with the modern style of sportswear with added visibility for safety. My range will offer women an alternative style to what is already in the market, a style which focusses on elegance and beauty. I am going to reinterpret traditional techniques found in couture fashion to modernize them; creating forward thinking elegant running apparel inspired by heritage design. My garments will be ergonomic designs, focussing on comfort within movement allowing women to feel and look good. Empowering them and increasing their motivate them to run.

CONCEPT PAGE The concept of my project is to create a Unisex outfit of a Jacket, top, shorts and leggings that are wearable in the winter season of England, in particular the city of London. These garments will be designed to not only keep the runner warm in cold conditions but also combat other weather forces that can prohibit the client from running, for example when it is raining. They will also inlcude Artificial intelligence within the clothing. This will be shown through temperature regulation pads that will be inserted into the jacket and the top. This is designed to keep the client cool when they are hot and warm the client up when they are cold. This will be further enforced by the material used on each garment, whether it is waterproof for the rain or thermally inticed for warth of the client. Additionally, there will be other features added to ensure the saftey of the runner. This will be shown through reflectivity. How reflective the garments are will be very important to the runners safety on the road, the reflectivity will be explored through piping and on the upper sleeve of the jacket. Also the top will have a detatchable mask with ventilation holes to filter out the dust and dirt of the surrounding pollution form the ongoing traffic in london. Overall, the outfit that will be created to withstand the harsh winters of london and will be designed to be multipurpose and for male and females.

LOCATION The location that the garments will produced for is London, within the busy polluted enviroment. The garments that will be created will heavily revolve around the comfort, warmth and efficiency properties that they have. This will informed by not only the materials that i have chosen to work with, but also the contrabution of AI Technology within sportswear/ fashion. The weather conditions that the garments will be produced for is winter. There are many factors in which i will need to consider when creating for this climate environment. For example this could be shown throughb how thick/ warm the garment is or how heavy it can be when running, or even the mechanisms that can ensure the safety of the client in these extreme conditions.

Safety is also another very important aspect that needs to be considered in this heavily populated environment. Statistics show that 3 people (runners) on a daily basis are fatally injured by a car on the roads of London. This statistic should not exist and be at 0. To get to this the garments that i create would be highly visible in the dark and daytime. This will be shown through both reflective materials and also LED lights.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT- JACKETS

This is a front view of a potential jacket that i can create. This includes the Khaki/ Camo Puffa material as well as the black/ grey puffa material.

In this garment i have added the three stripe signature for the Adidas brand and also the logo for them. This is done to show that the jacket could potentially look like if it was taken into production.

TOP DESIGNS FOR OUTFIT INCLUDING MASK FILTER.

These are two pads that are used to regulate the temperature of the runner. If the runner is hot the temperature pad will cool the them down and if they are cold it will heat them up.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT FOR LEGGINGS. COLOUR PAGE

The Black colour is used to mask any rain marks that hit the jacket etc.. This also reflects one of the commonly worn colours in winter. This is the colour page for the outfit for the winter runner.

The colour white is mainly used for the branding of Adidas in the form of the three stripes and the Adidas sign.

The silver/grey will be reflective to keep the rider safe and visible in darker surroundings and heavy traffic, so poeple who are driving are able to see the runner clearly.

CONCEPT In this project, I am going to focus on creating a series of running garment inspired by the chinese traditional medication in order to help people have stronger body and less risk of aging problems, which is widely recognized as “Yang Sheng Management, which is generally what everyone in asia from kids to older people nowadays talks about and really paid attention into, however what i am really looking into this big catogery is a type of chinese message that pressures the acupuncture points in different sections of the body that would force the blood to circulate more and faster. The knowledge of chinese medicine methods that i am aware of are usually came from my parents, who would really focus on taking care of health problems and it’s essential to keep some parts warm all the time in order to prevent further damage or presevering health. The target consumers are people exactly like my parents aged around 40-55 and lifestyle which they have a relatively stable working routine in daily life and a busy scheduel of working, so they would run for thirty minutes to one hour before work or after work in the park or the city running track. However what they would really concern is that usually in the morning they have to wear heavier clothes to go out otherwise they will feel some parts will feel the wind going through the body, like the lower waist and the top of the back shoulder, which are usually the parts in chinese medication are most mentioned and important, so my idea is to try to create a type of garment that combines more of a heating material as well as breathable material in the piece in order to create a piece that they enjoy to use during the day while doing the exercises.

The city tracks (photos are shown on the bottom and right side of the words) is a new government renovation that made in main cities in china, the reason why the government paid such big attention on buliding and programming this track is to encourage people to work out more and reduce obesity, however i noticed the main group of people that use these tracks are working people or middle-aged people instead of youngsters. In the meanwhile, they tend to focus more on jogging and slow running instead of fast running.

Another thing that I also consider into my design is also to combine the knee protection into the garment, usually people need to bring lots of garment to be able to have protection on knees, so in order to save the trouble of bringing too much product i want to make a pants that combines everything together.

Adidas Project Concept. My concept is to create a mens full running outfit consisting of a: Lightweight Gilet, Running shorts, Leggings and a high collared long sleeve top that is all suited to be worn in a cold and snowy environment in this case, Switzerland. All aspects of this outfit will be made so that the wearer can keep warm and insulated without overheating as well as being able to tackle the strong winds. I will incorporate these features with the use of fabrics that I choose wether its a breathable perforated fabric as the main body of work, or a windproof outer layer. Furthermore, small details of reflective fabric will be added to create visibility on the wearer so that danger when running on roads or dark paths is minimised. These features will predominantly be on the ankle cuffs of the leggings and on the centre back of the running top but will also be used very subtly throughout other areas. Overall, I will be creating an outfit that will endure the blistering cold of Switzerland but also accommodate the constant change of weather and terrain amongst the way where ever the runner may be.

Location. The key Location where this outfit is made for is Switzerland more specifically the Alps. When designing an outfit for this point of interest there are some features which cannot be ignored. The first being the temperature/ weather. During summer time the average temperature is around 9 degrees whereas in the winter its drops to a freezing -7 degrees, this means that whatever the consumer is planning to wear needs to be plausible for both these changes in temperature with the inclusion of being wind proof as altitude changing is a common occurrence for runners in this location. The second feature being the texture of the ground in which the consumer will be running on. Throughout the Alps the terrain changes consistently. You could be running on soft crunchy snow for the first part of your run and then met by hard un-even rocky terrain for the final part. This means that if the runner falls over, the clothing needs to be resistant and not rip or tear when impacting the ground. In addition it needs to avoid soaking up moisture from potential wet areas on the ground.

Safety is of course another main concern when it comes to running. Within most cities and countries around the world the colour tones tend to be very dark and dull which is why a lot of bright neon and reflective is worn when running in cities such as London‌ However with Switzerland, a lot of the landscape is very bright vibrant colours or just very light tones as far as the eye can see. For these reasons specifically I will be making my outfits colour palette more towards the dark tones and shades as it will stand out in this specific area, with the inclusion of reflective aspects to help with visibility in the evening.

ADIDAS RUNNING CONCEPT The concept for this project is create a technical & practical collection include jacket, top, and jogger. The main consumer is male, however the jacket and top are also suitable for female. This collection is design for the season spring/autumn. In spring and autumn, rainfall and the frequency of wind blowing are the highest. The technical part is to figure out how to keep the body temperture warm and cool using same material and with designed details. The material will be using for this project is foil. For example, the emergency blanket and insulated packaging for food, they both controls the temperture, to either used for rescue & survival, or keep the food fresh. According to research, these foil help to remain the body heat, and made from an ultra-insulating material constructed from polyester film with vapourised metallic coating. It reflects radiated heat back to the user. This material is water-proof, wind-proof, and even reflects over 90% of body heat when wet. Other fabrics for this project will be similar to recycled-polyster; recycled-fabric with the function of dry-fast, breathable, and for advantage, water-proof and wind-proof. The theme that I am related to this project is the spacesuit. The inspiration is according to there are 14 layers of a spacesuit, and each layer has there own function. In this project, it has been cut down to 2 layers. For the inside, will be use a recycled-breathable fabric which is comfortable for the body. The foil is for the outside layer, and it can be adjust by elastic strings to make the outside layer either tight or loose to the body. When it’s tight, the foil will heat up, and keep the body warm. On another hand, when it’s loose, the air flows between two layer can cool down the body temperature, to make the runner less worry about the climate change.

In this project I wll really focuse on sport bra. The concpet is add the tiny pocket on the sprot bra. Like carry phone, tissu ,or something improtant for jogging outside.I know there some pocket on the short but is uncomfortabel for jogging Sport bra is a very improtant stuff for women when they do any sport. Whatever what the sport is. Running is a high-intensity exercise. For that part, which is mean the fuctional and control the bust moveent whne they doing. I would like to change or improve a bit details to make women feel more useful and comfortable. Really foucsue point is how to combaid function and pockets together. On the otherside for this project will looking for T-shirt and legging as well, it will be useful for women on the running part.Based in south of China.

MARKETN TARGET

Runingn is more and more popular in Chian, show the date from the form. The number of marathons in 2017 has increased by about 17% compared to 2016, and the development of the event has become more rational. At the same time, the number of marathon has not been obvious, and healthy and trail running have maintained a growth of more than 25%. China market have potention for the running products.

Foucse on south of China market, becuse there the weather quite especial. The southern region is dominated by tropical and subtropical monsoon climates, with high temperatures and rains in summer and mild and low rainfall in winter. Not to bad for jogging in winter as well. Suitable for outdoor activities all year round, except for rainy days. But there are also wet weather conditions. This is a question that allows me to consider the quick-drying of fabrics.

Costumer Target

Asian women, whos love to jogging outside or enjoy doing sport. On this porject will really focuse on south of China traget. The espeical wether is effecting thir life in spering.Clothes are not easy to be dry and some time will have descuting smelling. On the physilogical part, Asian girls are really hard to get the masual line or make the masual look extramely cool. On that part , have to think about the design how show the body more fit. That's what Asia ladies thinking about when they buying some clothes.

Try to consider their needs from a customer perspective. I have consulted Chinese runners on sportswear requirements. They will also pay attention to fashion and comfort issues.

I am looking for the back massual. Because the back line is also a very beautiful part of women. Consider there have 2 part of people.I think about what consutomer will look for. Mostly there 2 reasons people go for sports.

Adidas Running Industry Project Pitch Files Miko/FSW/Y2/T2/2019 Updated: 22.03.2019

concept My concept is to create the outfit for the future urban environment. Urban environment being already futuristic is a starting point that makes us think of a future in a very conceptual way. Idea of making the futuristic running gear comes from the adidas line – Futurecraft. I want to create the futuristic clothing that will implement the craft of running. As the starting point I will take the concept of retrofuturism. Which is looking at the concepts of the future from the past. How people imagine the future in the past years (ex. 20th century). My main research focus will be “2001: Space Odyssey” being the trailblazer of sci-fi movie genre. From the costume design through the scenography to the specific movie still frames I will examine the movie and dig into its archives. To bring more diversity I will also look at other visual references that work within the concept such as cars or futuristic/outstanding buildings. The outfit will be designed for the spring/summer season considering the climate it three cities: London, Tokyo and Hong Kong (of which two are adidas “Key Cities”) because theese represent the cities of the future. For the garments itself I will create an outfit potentially consisting of a: - Base Layer – with a body mapped panels, using different type of stretch moisture wicking materials - Shorts with underlayer leggings – The top of the shorts will be a reimagined silhouette of the adidas classic running shorts, the underlayer leggings will be a supportive part of the short (also body mapped), could work potentially as a complimentary piece for base layer - Running jacket – with a silhouette alteration features, packable and with a collar inserted balaclava-type hood Optional accessories worn with the outfit could be a bandana or a running cap.

Concept page. The concept for my Adidas project I am going back to when people started to play sports circa 1800s. I am going to be looking at the fabrics used around this era and adapting the pattern so that the sportsman and sportswoman can play while still using the fabrics that was available in the 1800s I’ll be using fabrics such as cotton drill, linen and silks as these was most popular fabrics around that time. By using these fabrics I’ll have to use pattern cutting techniques to give ease is areas that’s required.

Inspiration. I started to look into other sports that require running such as cricket, tennis and basketball circa 1880s. While I was in the search for my reference I come across one of the oldest and a very developed sport, fencing. When fencing you move every part of your body but in particularly your legs and arms.

Shirt research. Looking at my research for my jacket I notice that the sportsman was wearing a shirt that had big oversizes sleeves. This was a popular trend in the 17th century. I also seen these dresses from the 17th century section in the V&A when I visited in January, I liked how the two piece sleeves was put in.

shorts research. My inspiration for my shorts come from these shorts that was originally use for horse riding. These please in the back of the garment are for ease when the rider mounts the horse. This would also work for when you’re running as you can see the shorts are tight around the legs and bum area.

Trousers research. Because in the 17th century they wore a lot of breaches I looked at the details such as buttons, buckles for finishes and also the foot straps. All these details can be transferred to a trouser.

CONCEPT DESCRIPTION

I want to aim this project at working women in London who forget or don’t take a lunch break whilst at work. Getting trapped in a bubble I want to create a collection that takes the overall view, makes the consumer look at the bigger picture to see that a 30 minute run is healthy for them and a good escape from their day. I want to include colours that represents positivity and different emotions that women's go through at work regarding mental health to promote awareness to the public, making it discrete using piping and paneling within each garment. The shapes of the garments will have an aim to focus on body parts that women like to show off and hide. For example, around the stomach area, a lot of women don’t like to show this area off so I will be adding a wide waistband to sports leggings which will be figure hugging to support that area. The Idea of the project is to bring women together to give a community feel when wearing this collection, promoting the idea around reclaiming their lunch break, taking a short break out of their day to take time to exercise for their health and wellbeing. With the cost of travel rising and the impact it has on global warming more and more people are trying to find alternatives to travelling to and from work. Statistics have predicted in 2020 running will be a faster way to travel. With this prediction, a lot more people will be on the streets running. Safety of runners needs to be considered, including visibility elements and temperature control so they stay warm/cool.

CUSTOMER PROFILE

A N A L Y S I S O F C O N S U M E R N E E D S

A huge issue within the city is workers not taking their lunch break. I want to focus on reclaiming ones lunch break through women wanting to put this certain collection of running gear on to promote it. This project will be aimed at working class women between the ages of 25-50 across the city London, who either commute or live here. I will be aiming it at women who have a fairly healthy lifestyle, eating clean and like to watch their weight but don’t act on it enough so this gives them an incentive to.

The collection will be aimed for everyday running in London. It will designed to wear all year round but mostly in the warmer months, spring and summer due to the coat thickness being lightweight. The jacket will be waterproof due to unpredictable weather across London. This could be promoted through a community of working women wearing this gear, coming together through running on their lunch break. I intend to make a collection that would be worn by women on a daily basis so it will need to not wear quickly and have good durability. For indoor and outdoor use, running both in the gym and around London on the streets. It will have visibility element for safety to allow the user to wear in darkness if intended whilst also have the approach of being part of a community of women who run to keep fit and healthy whilst also taking that needed break from work.

DESIGN INSPIRATION

When considering shapes and garments, I wanted something subtle and professional with bright elements to link with the colour theory of this project, using colours that relate to feeling good and positivity. I want to design a jacket that has a packable element into it, a large pocket area that can be used to store the rest of the gym clothing and then fold down the jacket so only one item needs to be put into a bag, meaning loose clothing isn't sitting into the bottom of a bag. Women tend to fill a handbag with a lot of personal items, meaning compacting a jacket down needs to be a necessity in this case. I want to also include a pair of legging that look at waist control and trying to hide elements women don’t like on their body and highlight the areas they do through paneling and shaping. The sports bra/top will feature a two in one to make it more compact with elasticated areas to control the bust area whilst making it supportive. Using bright colours in particular areas. The areas chosen will be to try highlight certain parts of a females body and shadow away from others. These designs give an idea of the types of garments I am starting to consider.

SPORTS JACKET/SPORTS TOP DEVELOPMENT

The main focus of the jacket will be to create a lightweight jacket with a loose fit. The lining will feature a bright red and piping or stripe along the sleeve and across the back at the top of the pocket, whilst also including reflective piping around the armhole of the raglan sleeve. . The hood will feature a toggle element to tighten/loosen and a two way zip to allow the user to open from each way. The cuffs will include a colour panel. I will also continue to development and consider pockets on the front and logo placement.

COLOUR SWATCHES The sports top will include a sports bra within it so its one whole piece. The sports bra will include extra hold with an elasticated band under the bust and shaping for comfort. Tracksuit in the past Tracksuit- suit designed to be worn on the track. its beginning goes back to 1960s, where tracksuit was reserved for athletes. Bruce Lee in cult drama “Longstreet” wore red tracksuit and yellow one in film “Game of death”. Though tracksuit had his debut in popular culture and TV at the end of 1970s. which certainly contributed to its popularization in the later decade 1980s was a jogging era and tracksuit become accessible not only for Olympians but also for recreational purposes. “In the mid-1980s, the influential fashion stylings of Messrs Jam Master Jay, Darryl McDaniels and Joseph Simmons – aka Run-DMC – instigated a reinterpretation of tracksuits from athletic apparel to prestige streetwear.” popularity of the 1980s hip-hop look brought the tracksuit – also the garment of choice for breakdancers – to the masses. Nowadays tracksuit silhouette constantly changes and is being widely reintroducing by luxury brands.

Japanese aesthetic qualities Uniqlo U blocketch jacket Christophe Lemaire offers the ideal wardrobe that consists of flexible and versatile pieces you can wear every day. The aesthetics of christophe lemair designs is very interesting, although the designer is French, his collections resemble Japanese streetwear, are minimalistic, monochrome, simple but intriguing with great care for details.

Fashion statement

Concept In this project I will focus on the history of the tracksuit and its continuous transformation. My research is mainly about the culture of wearing a tracksuit as a fashion status and streetwear recognistion. Additional inspirations are the design aesthetics of Japanese fashion designers as well as their collaboration with sportswear brands. My aim is to re-design iconic Adidas tracksuit which will satisfy basic needs of recreational joggers.

The most popular sport among athletes in China is running. This is why there was a running industry forum at ISPO Shanghai: Nearly 100 % of those who do sport in China are also into running. From 2016 to 2017 the turnover in the running market in China rose by 25 %. In 2017 the sporting goods market with running products had a volume of 6,32 billion US-Dollars. And as Robin Trebbe, Managing Director China & Asia Pacific at Intersport International, said at the running industry forum that there is even “a lot more growth potential”. An average commuter in London will normally use London Transport to get to work but society are becoming more and more aware of fitness and health and also the enviroment. People are trying to find new ways of approaching being fit, i.e diets and exercise. One of the best ways to be fit is to run, and I think there is a huge gap in Sportswear as a whole for someone who wants to be able to wear the garment they run in and to be able to keep it on at your work space. Commonly a commuter will be wearing office wear, (suit and tie) or casual wear (jacket, t-shirt, jeans) depending on there in employment. If it’s smart wear the cross between I think would to be some sort of stretch fabric smart shirt with breathability. For casual wear it can be pretty much anything. For smart wear I think its harder to bridge the gap between work and exercise but for a creative it its far easier as there are less restrictions in what you can and cannot wear. My aim is to fill the gap in-between on both subjects, the commuter and runner and the smart and casual. I also want to make my product as sustainable as possible. Now is the time to start innovating on this matter, fashion is a leading contributor to polluting our earth so I think it is essential to start getting on board with being pro active and fight to save the environment before it’s too late. We are all becoming more and more concerned with this subject and I think it has a unique selling point as well as it being important to be conscious of what we are responsible for. There are very few brands who are looking to solve this problem and whilst its becoming more and more important it is essential to step up on this before everyone else clocks on to it.

AS I A N R U N N IN G MA R K E T Running in Asia is the most popular sport, i want to infuse a Japanese aethstic to my cloting to attract the Asian market. To fill in the gap of running gear and street wear would be in my eyes hugely popular in place like China and Japan. Asia is also one of the bigggest contributers to pollution. If i am able to find susatainle sources that econimially suitable it would be a unique selling point to the Asain market.
