First of all, Happy Easter to you all, I do hope you are going to take advantage of the festivals that are going on all around the Island, you may not be religious, but these spectacles are not to be missed and I, for one, will not be missing the Passion play in Adeje. Many of you will know that I have had some success mistakenly breeding Zebra Finches at home, I didn’t realise I was turning into some sort of bird freak, until I got all
Tenerife Weekly - 29th March - 4th April 2013 over excited about the fact that El Medano is now a sanctuary for birds, one that the government is trying to preserve. Take a look at pages 28-29, there are some wonderful species that have made their home there, lots of information available, so you know what you are looking for. El Medano, a brilliant place to spend a day out, If you have never been there, you are missing out. I don’t have any children, one husband, is quite enough work for me, but if anything was to put me off even further it is my story on page 15. 21-year-old Jade Packer

In the words of the old comedy Soap, “confused? You will be”. At least, you will be unless you inform yourself of some very basic principles. The confusion comes mainly from the proliferation of outlets where the issue has been discussed since the 1995 law regulating Tenerife’s tourism started to be enforced in late 2010. Previously, the law had been widely flouted, and only infrequently and unenthusiastically enforced, but with increasing evidence of an imminent economic crisis and collapse of the property sector, the Canarian Government saw an opportunity to take tourism by the scruff of the neck and drag it upmarket to compete with a burgeoning range of new offers provided by luxurious and sophisticated resorts. That it might raise some money in fines and mollify an increasingly worried hotel sector in the process was no doubt seen as a bonus. In recent months, video after video has appeared showing the 5* hotels and niche markets – from windsurfing to walking, astronomy to vulcanology – that Tenerife can offer. And in recent months too, maybe late in the day, the realization has dawned that the Government is actually serious about its enforcement of tourism legislation, and that the fines being issued are not inconsiderable, and neither are they going away. The situation has not been helped by the announcement that the Canarian Government is in the process of approving a new tourism law, and the discovery that three early fines under existing legislation have been overturned in the Canarian High Court on the grounds of the
EU’s Bolkestein Directive, a document whose main intent seems to be to send its readers to sleep, or to the bottle, within thirty seconds. So, to sum it up in plain and simple English, the situation is the following: • Under tourism legislation as it presently stands, private individuals may not independently let their properties commercially, for holidays, under any circumstances. If their property is licensed for tourism, however, they may let it for holidays through an approved agent: in the case of tourist complexes, this will be an on-site sole agent. Residential lets are permitted, but if they are for fewer than three months, the Department of tourism will deem them to be commercial holiday lets. • A team of Inspectors is employed to find evidence of illegal activity, and this includes online adverts and, most recently, inspections in person in the guise of tourism standard quality surveyors asking the occupants of apartments how long they are staying, how much their holiday cost, and whether they are happy with the tourist services included with their booking, etc. Anyone renting their property out illegally is taking a huge risk of being discovered and of a fine being imposed. • Fines are being issued for those who are considered to be breaking the law. First offences are being fined at around 18,000 Euros, a sum being reduced to around 14,000 Euros on first appeal to the Government. Second and subsequent offences will be fined at around the 30,000 Euros and 60,000 Euros mark. After confirmation of the fine, the next stage appeal is to the Canarian Courts and the first cases are now going through this process. To avoid the Government
placing an embargo on bank accounts and property after a fine has been imposed, and adding legal interest, the fines must either be paid up front at the point of going to Court or placed in an escrow account at the Court itself in case the appeal should fail. • There is nothing, technically, in the law itself prohibiting owners of residential property from applying for a tourist licence, but for the last decade or so the Government has had a moratorium on granting all tourist licences except for 4* or 5* hotels. This moratorium, or ban, on issuing tourist licences, has been renewed at regular intervals, and the new legislation will incorporate it into law so that it is a legal principle that residential property is not issued with a tourist licence. There is some evidence that there will be a few exclusions in the new law for certain types of villas in certain circumstances, but until the legislation has completed its Parliamentary process and becomes statute, it is impossible to know for sure what the situation will be. • Three recent judgments by the Canarian High Court have overturned fines on the grounds of the Bolkestein Directive. These, however, are no grounds for hope for those who wish to let their properties personally because the rulings have nothing to do with the inspections and fines imposed on individual property owners. They were imposed on companies for running tourism businesses without Canarian authorization, but the Bolkestein Directive means that they do not need such permission. Even so, they must themselves conduct their business in accordance with the law. The law is still the law, as described above, for individual property owners and agents alike, and the rulings do

Lorna Eade not affect that. Holiday lets may not be undertaken on residential complexes at all, and on tourist complexes, may only be undertaken by the registered on-site sole agent. • Finally, it is worth mentioning that Canarian close control of its tourism offer has been upheld by Europe on the grounds that the Canaries is denominated an ultraperipheral region. The EU
has eight such regions: Réunion, Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Saint-Martin, Martinique, Azores, Madeira, and the Canaries. The classification is designed to compensate regions for the special circumstances arising from their great distance from their national centers of power. It is this status, for example, that gives the Canaries their particular and beneficial customs allowanc-
es, and permits residents discounted travel within Spain. It also allows the Government to develop policies that might be seen as protectionist elsewhere, and which some see as protectionist here, but the Government believes that our tourism is our most valuable resource and deserves protection – and that is something with which we will surely all agree.
Fun, Sport, And Fitness At Arona Maximo Deportes
By Colin Kirby www.colinkirby.com
Pumping music and muscles were flexing in the sun at Arona Maximo Deportes on Thursday in Playa de Las Americas. Now in it’s second year the open air gym and sports event just off the sea front was tempting the crowds in with free aerobic dancing, basketball, tennis, and even football on an inflatable pitch.
Health and fitness can sometimes be easily forgotten on this island of so many distractions but the Arona council are trying to get people, especially the young, to see how much fun it can all be. All ages were getting involved with toddlers swinging racquets nearly as big as them and aspring basketball stars leaping as high as their older rivals. Stalls were offering courses and excursions in motocross, sailing, jet bikes, and wind surfing, while gyms were showing off their facilities and courses. One stall was even pushing fresh fruit, that confused a few younger passers by. But the big focal point was the stage with the athletic dancers whipping up a frenzy of body shaking, even the DJ was spinning – well tunes at least. Cold drinks were in high demand with many plumping
for high protein energy infusions. The tennis and basketball were proving popular as the competitions worked through to the finals. The football with inflatable goals and surrounds looked great fun but I couldn’t help wondering – if a player stubbed his toe would they literally be letting the side down? Fair play to all those who joined in the fun, there will be a few tweaks and tight muscles for a few days but it’s all good in the long run.

national Police officers from the judicial brigade have busted a drug trafficking gang which was operating in the south. The members were Columbians, Cubans, Africans and Spaniards. The drugs were brought in through Los Rodeos airport, and hidden in personal goods, or inside their bodies. ericcson, the Swedish multinational communications company, has announced a restructuring plan in Spain, with staff cutbacks, mainly in the services and projects areas, and the closure of its centers in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. the sentence handed out by the Santa Cruz provincial court against Dejan Valentinov Dejanov, for the brutal murder of Jennifer Mills Westley in Los Cristianos, now stands, as the time limit for appeals has expired. He was sentenced to twenty years in a secure psychiatric institution, and ordered to pay damages of a hundred thousand euros to the victim’s daughters. the main russian tour operators have told Canarian president Paulino Rivero that if the Canaries want more Russian tourists, Spain needs to speed up the visa process and reduce airport costs. A couple, said to be between 30 and 40 years of age and well dressed, carried out an armed attack on a rent-a-car agency in Playa de las Américas around 11am on Friday morning. After asking to speak to the owner, they threatened the staff with a revolver. Police are unsure whether it was a real or fake gun, but the level of intimidation caused would be the same. The robbers got away with some 1,200 Euros in cash, and although local and national police searched the area very quickly afterwards, they made a successful getaway. As a result of the nature of the crime, the investigation will now be taken up by the Brigada de Policía Judicial. A 54-year-old man died after a fall to the shore from Montaña Amarilla in San Miguel de Abona, the mountain between Costa del Silencio and Amarilla Golf. Since it is an area with difficult access, a GES helicopter was needed to recover the body in an operation also involving bomberos, Policía Local and Guardia Civil. The man was flown to the SUC medical helicopter base at TFS. Unfortunately, attempts to resuscitate him were to no avail and the paramedics could do no more than confirm his death from the injuries sustained in the fall. the termination of the contract for a doctor and a fully equipped ambulance to be present at Tenerife’s Los Rodeos Airport all day, a service which was provided by the Red Cross, is worrying officials. The decree to end the contract, which was approved by the central government, also affects Lanzarote and Fuerteventura airports. This cutback was applied to airports which receive less than eight million passengers a year. Now, Tenerife’s Cabildo vice president, Aurelio Abreu, has taken a motion to the high chamber, to reestablish medical services at the airport. the Cabildo is gathering representatives of social groups and business organisations to coordinate a plan to request the state government to provide the finance needed to complete the Tenerife island ring road. the government’s minister for development, Ana Pastor, has said that the airport tax subsidies for the Canaries cost over 32 million euros, added to which are the 180 million euros for residents’ travel discounts between the islands, and to the mainland, which the government will maintain, and asked the regional government for some institutional loyalty. the Animalista-Pacma Party has handed a petition to the Canarian government with 30,000 signatures, requesting changes to the animal protection laws, which are now 22 years old, and considered obsolete. the Canarian government president, Paulino Rivero has announced a package of measures to stimulate the economy, to include a social employment plan, a fund to develop new flight routes to attract tourists from emerging markets, and the opening of schools during the summer to reinforce language training. the Canaries were the leading independent community for foreign tourist spending levels, reaching over 2,000 million euros in the first two months of this year, ahead of Catalonia and Andalusia. The Canaries also registered an increase in the number of French visitors.

it’s Certainly noT Grim up north!! By marc Craig HAving spent our last day off exploring a graffitied ghost town and a landfill with a disturbing aura, we felt that it might be nice to have a look around one of the nicer parts of the island this week! Having read fellow columnist John sharples comments on the lava pools of garachico, we decided to go take a look, stopping on the way back at Puerto De la Cruz - two places my wife had never seen. We set off nice and early, with a tank full of gas and Google map loaded up, my wife proudly holding up her new licence offered to drive, giving me the chance to really appreciate the beautiful scenery on the drive up, which would take about an hour and twenty minutes. We hopped on the TF1 from Palm Mar, and then joined the TF82 through Guia De Isora, past Chio onto the TF375 towards Santiago Del Teide. It was at this point the scenery started to really impress, dramatic Lava fields looking so alien leading to steep winding roads that wouldn’t look out of place in a vintage Bond movie - in fact several secret agent worthy sports cars raced crazily past us taking the hairpin bends at suicidal speeds- maybe they knew the roads much better than we did, but with fantastic views like that, what’s the rush? We stopped at one of the many viewing points, the view of Teide from this side is just stunning, majestic -and you can really see it’s a volcano! We continued our journey onto the 421 then
email marc: marc@tenerife-weekly.com descended down the crazily zigzag road from which I looked down into Garachico which seemed like a model village from this height!
garachico
Garachico is a beautiful town, unspoilt by tourism and very Spanish, with many old buildings such as the monastery, water mill and fort that are open to the public as museums. Built during the reign of Philip II, Garachico was a thriving seaport, very important for exporting local produce like sugar and the famous Malmsey wine, making it the most prosperous region of the island. In 1706 however, a volcanic eruption occurred that lasted for weeks and sent rivers of lava into the port burying most of it forever leaving only a small inlet, ending it’s time as a bustling harbour. The eruption did create many natural lava pools which are fantastic and range from gentle paddling pools, deep, crystal clear lagoons and for
the daring, ones that the Atlantic swell make swimming a little hairy!! Connected by many crazy paved pathways it’s a great place to visit- take a swimsuits or trunks, its great fun!!
Puerto De la Cruz
After exploring the lava pools we made our way back to the car and reset Google map for the half hour drive to Puerto. With the rugged coastline to our left it’s a cool drive through several tunnels carved into the cliffs above us. After parking in the huge unfinished car park by the coast, we walked into the city. Dating back to the 16th century, it was a small fishing village that benefitted enormously from the destruction of Garachico resulting in it taking over as the prosperous port in the area. It was also the original location of tourism back in the 1950s, before the south was developed and took over to a large extent.
Puerto De La Cruz is a beautiful city, we only had a couple of hours to explore so I’m sure we missed a great deal but it has a completely different feel to the resorts of the south, we almost felt like we were on a different island, it’s historical, there are many old buildings, cobbled streets with labyrinthine narrow streets to explore, Market vendors selling everything from flowers to jewellery and less “tat” than in the south although it hasn’t escaped entirely! We strolled along the seafront walk, watching the many street performers until hunger got the best of us so we grabbed “papas locas” chips with mayo, ketchup, ham and cheese and Arepas, a Venezuelan fried cornbread patty that’s popular in the more Spanish places on the island, I had mine filled with Carne Mechada, which is shredded beef. I had a great day “up north”, if you get the chance I heartily recommend it- and take the scenic route!!

Fishermen Protests El Hierro Quake
Local fishermen gathered in the harbour of Los Cristianos to demand to be allowed to catch extract more bluefin and announced that their protests will continue and that they may even try to meet with the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Miguel Arias Cañete, in Madrid, to find a solution to an industry they say is in danger of extinction.
Measures 4.1
An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale shook El Hierro last Monday, the strongest of hundreds of tremors recorded over recent days in the territory which suffered an undersea volcanic eruption in 2011.
The earthquake struck at 2:41 pm and its epicentre was in the Atlantic Ocean about 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) west of the island, a spokesman for Spain’s National Geographical Institute said. It was measured at a depth of 16 kilometres and was preceded by another earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale. About 800 earthquakes have been recorded in El Hierro, which has about 10,000 inhab-
Marcelino Diaz, president of the Fishermen’s Association Our Lady of Mercy of Los Cristianos, promised: “We will not stop our demonstrations”. The protest, which was attended by fishermen from other islands, proceeded normally and aroused the interest of the many visitors to the pier. The protest was joined by Councilwoman Arona City Hall Housing, Marta
Melo, who noted that the group of municipal government has shown its solidarity with the fishermen. She reminded that this activity has always been closely linked with the core of Los Cristianos.
CANARY SUPPORT
Marcelino Diaz reported that a meeting was held with the Deputy Minister of Fisheries José Manuel Soto, which also showed sup-
port:. “Arias Cañete is the only one who can solve the problem”. Otherwise, they will continue every day with the protests until they meet the minister or increase the quota of Bluefin tuna catches. “We want to eat and to feed our children, “says Diaz. Similar protests were also held in in other ports inTazacorte, Arguineguin, Morro Jable, Lanzarote and Gran Tarajal.
itants, since March 18, the spokesman added. The majority have measured above 2.0 on the Richter but only a handful has been strong enough for people on the island to notice. In October 2011 an underwater volcano erupted off the coast of El Hierro, two days after an earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale rocked the island. El Hierro, which means “Iron” in Spanish, suffered thousands of earthquakes throughout much of 2011, only a few of them, prompting officials to briefly close a tunnel linking the island’s two main towns, Frontera and Valverde, and evacuate dozens of people over fears of landslides. The last major volcanic eruption off the Canary Islands happened off Teneguia, Las Palmas, in 1971.

A good game was had by all in the gents pairs, but Norman and Robert won comfortably. The Mixed Triples took place in the afternoon, with Christina and Frank Kennedy, and Bill Rogerson, beating Grace, Robert and Graham Cathcart. The Mixed Pairs was won by Isobel and John Gilchrist leaving Tony Quinan and Vicki Evans runners up. Sunday 17th commenced at 11.15am with Louisa Taylor and Celia Mangeng managing the extreme conditions to a healthy win against Sue Say-
ers and Carol McQuade who put up a great effort. The weekend culminated in the highlight of the Ladies and Men’s Singles Championships. On rink 4, Graham Cathcart and John Gilchrist held the attention of supporters with an extremely good game between the two men, Graham winning by 21-15 in testing conditions. Rink 2 saw Vicki Evans and Eve Clarke battle to find the line or weight of the bowls in winds that blew hats off and bowls to the jack, or not. This
game has the crowd on the edge of their seats and after 25 ends, Vicki was victorious with a win of 21-15. All the competitors played to a very high standard, especially considering the conditions. Thanks must go to the supporters, markers, umpires and staff who did a sterling job. The presentation evening was held on Tuesday 26th with a Gala Dinner which heralded the end of another Bowls season at Winter Gardens.

Ex-Pat Tax – Readers Letters The Facts
The deadline is fast approaching for British expats living in Spain to declare savings, shares or properties held overseas as part of a major tax evasion crackdown by the Spanish authorities.
Residents have until April 30 to declare all assets worth over 50,000 Euros, and were held outside the country as of 31 December 2012. If they fail to do so, they could face massive fines. The rule change affects all residents and has sparked concern among the hundreds of thousands of British expatriates in Spain. The Spanish Government considers you a resident if you spend at least 183 days there in a year. Those who fail to declare and are subsequently found to have assets worth more than 50,000 Euros, could be hit with a minimum penalty of 10,000 Euros, a fine of 150% of the tax owed and 4% annual interest - as well as having to repay the tax owed. Those who declare assets that were previously undeclared will not be fined, but will probably receive a bill for the tax they owe. While the crackdown is focusing on tax evasion, some Britons who moved to Spain in the last few years may have not paid the tax they owed as they do not know about the law. Spain previously had a wealth tax on worldwide assets that required people to declare their total worth, but this was suspended in 2008 and has only recently been reinstated. A tax expert stated: ‘Those who have moved to Spain since 2008 may not have been reporting assets they have overseas, simply because they did not realise they had to report anything, unlike those who lived there before the wealth tax was suspended. Anyone who has undeclared assets in Spain should speak to an accountant. Those people who have been declaring their assets, this will mean an extra administrative burden, but they should have nothing to fear.
WHAT YOU MUST DECLARE
Spanish residents must declare overseas assets worth more than 50,000 Euros in any of the following three categories:
• • •
Savings or deposits (including annuities). Shares or investments. Property. If you only have 48,000 Euros of savings in an overseas account, and 47,000 Euros invested in stocks and shares, you would not be required to declare either of these. Spanish authorities also want people to declare if they are the beneficiary or an authorised signatory on an overseas asset. The rules could have a particular bearing for those expats who own previously undeclared properties in the UK, for which they could be liable under the new Spanish wealth tax (which starts at 700,000 Euros of total assets) as well as capital gains tax, inheritance tax or taxes on gifting depending on the circumstances. Figures from Blevins Franks reported by the Telegraph Newspaper earlier this month calculated that a Spanish resident with 300,000 Euros (£260,000) in an undeclared overseas account would incur the minimum penalty of 10,000 Euros (£8,640), and see the amount taxed at the top interest rate of 52%. But they could also be fined 150% of the tax owed and 4% annual interest going back four years, meaning they would owe the Spanish taxman 424,960 Euros (£368,000). Unpaid tax as a result of undeclared overseas assets worth more than 120,000 Euros (£104,000) could also be considered a criminal offence of tax fraud. In future the deadline for the declarations will be the end of March, but the need for re-reporting these assets if their value has increased by more than 20,000 Euros. Blevins Franks said that not all undeclared assets will be hit with the full fines listed above. For example, someone will not have to pay the 150% of tax owed fine if they can prove that the asset was bought with income that had been taxed.
Hola, I refer to your article in the 15- 21 March edition called ‘Where’s the water’. It has provided some useful clues to solving a puzzle that my hiking friend and I discovered on a walk down a barranco off the Masca road recently. It was a very rough path and as we reached our time limit, we came across a small plateau upon which were some abandoned buildings. 1959 was etched into the cement at one place and we found a fenced off area indicating that the site was the property of the Santiago del Teide water company with a notice warning of all kinds of physical and chemical dangers. The large diesel motor seems to have been connected to a ventilation fan at some time and the building set into the barranco wall above the site suggests some accommodation sited away from any processing. The engine also seemed too big just to drive a fan. The lady at the Santiago del Teide tourist information office was sure that the site was for water distribution. Due to the difficulty in access that we experienced, the installation could only have been effected by helicopter airlift. We were very impressed by the enormous effort that the whole operation would have needed and are sure that we still don’t have the whole picture. Your comments about demineralization and desalination have pointed us in the right direction, since all around there were signs of mineral and/or salt waste products in addition to the aforementioned warnings. We hope to pick up the threads when we return next winter. Thanks to you article we now know where to start looking. Regards, Bob Johnson Dear Bob, Thanks for the response to my article; I’m glad you found it enlightening! It’s always intrigued me why there’s no water shortage on such a dry island so getting some answers for my article was quite satisfying!!
I was especially surprised by how much the Canarian pines contribute by collecting condensation- basically a large percentage of the tap water we use is mountain dew!! Thanks for the photos and good luck with your further explorations! Marc Craig

The church is ready to welcome families who are on holiday or residents on the island, to join them for this especially joyful service remembering when Jesus was resurrected and brought light to the world.
Each week it is necessary to bring in a lightweight cross, as the disco room in the hotel of course doesn’t have a cross, even though it does have a glitter ball! One of the church members made a simple cross from garden twigs and raffia but just for Easter Sunday that cross will be transformed with small tulips and daisies from which each member of
the congregation will be given a flower. There will also be a cross covered with daffodils which may be a nostalgic memory for ex-pats here. We don’t see daffodils growing down near the coast, but some do grow near Vilaflor. Special tiny Easter eats too will be provided as a token of love from the church. Tenerife Family church is a name which encompasses three churches. The mother church is in Costa Silencio and they meet at 10am. Pastor Bill Jeffrey will be conducting that Easter Sunday service.
Then at 11am, a guest speaker Graham Derrig will be leading the Tenerife Best hotel service. The Living Room the third church will hold a service at 6pm way above the Veronicas area of Playa de las Americas. This isn’t suitable for disabled people as there are over 30 steps up there. It is above Burger King. The church wishes everyone a happy and peaceful Easter time and they hope to see you in one of their churches. Pastor Bill Jeffrey’s contact number is 609 565 528

Encuentro Cruceros Marina San Miguel
O
n Saturday 23rd March 2013, alongside some great weather, fifteen boats took to the waters in San Miguel for the 3rd Encuentro de Cruceros Marina San Miguel. Some superb boats gathered together, all between 6 and 22 meters long, as the sun shone over the water, reflecting in the polished bows of some spectacular sea craft, the skippers met in the Chill Out Bar in the tower that overlooks the marina, and decided on the route to be taken. The flotilla started promptly at 10.30 am from San Miguel port and onto Bahia del Médano, and back again. After several hours of sailing, all the crews were well and truly ready for great paella in a lively atmosphere, it was agreed that due to the success of the event, the next meeting will be held, again at San Miguel Marina on April 27th. Thanks were given to the companies involved in accomplishing such a memorable day; The Canary Island Brewing Company, Amarilla Golf and Marina San Miguel. To add to the atmosphere of the day, many locally based companies joined in the fun for the day. ECC Yacht Charter gave many people the opportunity to view the proceedings from a privileged position as they spent the day sailing to and from the Marina. The Jet Ski Albatroz company gave out free rides on its five jet skis to spectators and, as usual, the Serenity, part of the Big Game Fishing company based in marina San Miguel, made several catches during the proceedings, although they immediately returned the fish to the sea. The Submarine Safari Company made five dives on board submarine Sub Fun V. In each dive 44 passengers enjoyed an exhilarating and unique experience discovering the underwater world of the island. Members of the Group “Los Golfos” organized a golf
tournament on the 18 hole golf course at Amarilla Golf to coincide with the day’s events and hosted a barbecue where prizes were given to top-ranked players. Family members had the opportunity to try out the sport and participate in a parallel tournament which was held on the 9 hole Pitch & Putt course. The Pura Vida Horse riding centre organized horseback rides close to Amarilla Golf Course and the horses had the opportunity to refresh their legs in the sea. Nº

Storm Damage Cost €17 Million
tHe Cabildo has announced that the recent storms across tenerife caused an estimated 17,327,903 euros damage to crops, affecting mainly bananas and potatoes. the storm also damaged independent infrastructures on the island. it is expected that it will cost millions of euros to repair the damage.
Counsellors in the affected areas presented an assess-
ment of the effects of this storm, which focused in the south west of the Island; to the vice president Jose Antonio Valbuena who said he would pass the request for aid to the Government to help cope with the losses. The Minister of Agriculture, José Joaquín Bethencourt stated that the very high winds caused damage that had affected all types of crops including fruit vegetables, cereals and flowers across the region. Infrastructure and building damage was found in greenhouses in
Tacoronte, Fasnia Buenavista, Los Silos, Garachico, and a series of damaged pipes in Guia de Isora. The Minister of Water, Jesus Morales, said that the rain caused extensive damage to the drainage network and infrastructure in the municipality of Guía de Isora. He reported that on the night of March 3, the level of water running through the ravine was 80m3 per second. Several landslides occurred in the north of the Island, in El Palmar, and Castro El Fortin, and significant damage
Facebook.com/TenerifeWeekly to coastal paths had been discovered in La Casona de Rambla de Cstro and at the Hotel Maritim.. Finally, the Minister of Roads and Landscape, Jose Luis Delgado, said the council attended 126 incidents on 35 roads during the three days of the storm, The centre of Information Highway (CIC) received 413 calls related to incidents on the roads, such as falling rocks, walls, branches and signs. To address the situation, the City Council called an Emergency Insular Plan into action. On one day alone some 260 people were utilized as operating crews
to help clear the damage. Once the storm had passed, road maintenance operators worked hard to clear debris. Valbuena said the emergency demonstrated suc-
cessfully the high level of coordination between different administrations in tackling the Cabildo emergency calls which involved all levels of services.

Mainland Critical Baby News In Stranded Brief In Spain Guardia Civil officers from Alicante have arrested two men in Finestrat, suspected of having committed a robbery at a house in Torrevieja, where they allegedly held the owners prisoner for 5 hours, stole over 20 pieces of jewellery and watches, and 3,000 euros in cash. The investigation began last September, after the incident which began when the couple, who own a bar in Torrevieja were tackled by two men at their home. A security camera led to the identification of the robbers’ vehicle. On the 9th of April, five magistrates at the Supreme Tribunal will examine, behind closed doors, the acquittal of the former Valencian president Francisco Camps, and the ex-secretary general of the regional Partido Popular Ricardo Costa, who were acquitted by a jury of passive bribery, in the Suits case, which sprang from the Gürtel case. The Tribunal will be studying an appeal made by the Valencian socialists, who say that there is a contradiction between the jury’s decision and the final ruling. The prosecution is not appealing. Malaga’s taxi drivers decided unanimously at a two and a half hour meeting on Sunday, to call off their planned strike which would have affected workers at the airport during Easter week. Their representative José Antonio Mate said that the sector had made a big effort, and hopes that they won’t be disappointed by the Junta’s proposal to modify a decree which allows taxi drivers from other municipalities or provinces to collect passengers from the port or the airport. The Junta has told them that they will make their proposal before the 15th of April. The forest fire in the municipality of Barx in Valencia led to the precautionary evacuation of two housing developments and La Drova old peoples’ home. The fire began in a mountainous area at Peña del Gato. Five helicopters joined nine fire brigades worked together to extinguish the fire, which was hampered by windy weather. Work carried on into the next morning. The fire, which has now been controlled, is thought to have been caused by negligence. The Andalusian secretary general of the PSOE party and national delegate, Miguel Ángel Heredia, has complained that the completion of the work on the southern access to the Malaga Airport has been at a standstill for over a year, and added that putting this into action relies on this complementary project, which was technically approved over a year ago, but financial approval hasn’t yet been given. Heredia says that this work, which cost 40 million euros, is the key to improving accesses to the airport, which is so important for tourism. A 30-year-old woman who was injured in a fire at her home in Valencia on Saturday, which is thought to have been started by her husband, who has been arrested, remains in the burns unit at the Hospital La Fe in a serious condition. Her five year old son was affected by smoke inhalation. Malaga will be hosting the Basketball Copa del Rey, The King’s Cup, in February next year. The basketball association, the Malaga council and the Andalusian Junta, who will assume the costs, signed the agreement on Monday, which will, for the third time, make Malaga the main stage of this competition. It’s expected to have a positive financial impact of around 20 million euros, spread between hotels, restaurants and other businesses, and promote Malaga’s image. The event will be held at the Palacio de Deportes Martín Carpena. The government group in the Alicante council have agreed to the project to establish charges for the use of various spaces within the Castillo Santa Bárbara, for ceremonies, social or business events, and estimate that this could generate an income of a 100,000 euros a year for the council. A viability study concluded that an average of 65 events could be held there a year, mostly at night, with some 350 people attending each one. The Castillo is currently hosting an exhibition of the history of Alicante.
Zowie Lyons, 25, and her partner Sam Hilton, 20, from Leeds, had planned a few days of winter sun. They flew to Spain prior to the birth of their first baby. The couple however, failed to take out travel insurance, so when their daughter was born 13 weeks premature, they were left stranded. The couple now need to raise £12,000 to bring her home safely from Alicante.
Just hours after arriving in Alicante, Miss Lyons went into labour and baby Ellizeah was born the following day, weighing just 2lb. Their daughter, now seven weeks old, has already had three major operations and needs specialised 24 hour medical care. While Ellizeah could have the fourth operation she needs in Spain, her parents want to get her home to avoid living in Alicante indefinitely. They are staying in a nearby hotel to be as close to her as possible, but are rapidly running out of money. Although Ellizeah’s care is covered by the European
Health Insurance Card (EHIC) - which covers emergency healthcare in Europe - the tiny new born is so sick she needs to be flown home by air ambulance. Miss Lyons, who was due to give birth early May, said: ‘We were only going away for five days, and my midwife had cleared me to fly, so I thought everything would be OK. But we have been very unlucky. As soon as we landed on the Thursday I was having pains. And by the Friday I was having contractions all day and was taken for an emergency Caesarean.’ Ellizeah was born with digestive problems and needed to have a third of her intestine removed. She also had an enlarged heart vessel and a brain haemorrhage. She needs intensive round the clock care. Her mother said: ‘Ellizeah was born with quite a few problems with her intestines and heart because she came so early. She is stable in hospital at the minute so we need to get her home while it is safe to do so. Even though we didn’t have travel insurance, it may not have fully covered all the care Ellizeah needs to get her home. It’s a complicated situation.’ The couple now have to find the funds to pay for an
aeroplane which can fly a specialist transport team to Spain to pick them up. The specialist team will be provided free on the NHS by Embrace Yorkshire & Humber Infant & Children’s Transport Team, part of Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. Specialist doctors and nurses from Embrace are currently on standby to fly to Alicante and bring Ellizeah back to Leeds General Infirmary. Embrace consultant Dr Steve Hancock, who is ready, along with his team to go to Alicante once the funding is in place, said: ‘It’s a very unfortunate situation the family have found themselves in. While our NHS care for the
11
baby and expertise will come free, the plane still needs to be funded. Transporting critically ill babies and children can be very risky and not something which can be done in regular aircraft in case there are any complications. Our Embrace team use special road and air ambulances to provide mobile intensive care: a doctor and nurse is with the patient at all times to make sure they remain stable whilst on the journey. We want to make every effort to make sure this baby can get back home safely.’ For more information visit: www.justgiving.com/ellizeahlyons or search for ‘Ellizeah’s support group’ on Facebook.
Banderas & Griffiths Join In Easter Celebrations
U.S. actress Melanie Griffith, and her husband, Malaga native, Antonio Banderas, both took part in the procession of the Jesus Cautivo religious brotherhood, one of the largest groups in southern Spain. The actress, dressed in black, joined thousands of other people who follow the religious icon of Jesus as it tours through the streets of Malaga which started at about 8 p.m. at the brotherhood’s headquarters located on Jesus Cautivo Square. Griffith has attended the Malaga’s Holy Week celebrations on numerous occasions with her husband, who participates actively in several brotherhoods, but this is the first time she has taken part in the procession which represents Jesus Christ as a prisoner known as “The Captive” or “The Lord of Malaga.” Anonio Banderas took part in the Virgin of Tears and Favours procession of the Combined Brotherhoods, in which he walked “as just one more brother.” “The pointed hood gives me a freedom I no longer find walking down the street with my face uncovered - it puts me at the same level as everybody else, we’re all even. That’s what the pointed hood is all about, hiding your identity and going from being an individual to being part of a group,” Banderas told reporters just before the procession left the Church of San Juan. “I believe that Holy Week in the 21st century must involve the entire community. The Malaga brotherhoods have 70,000 members, and if we can put all that energy and human potential to use, we can do many things, and that’s the commitment many brotherhoods are making,” he said.

Banker Exhumed in DnA Claim
A
65-YeAr-olD spanish woman has won the right to have one of spain’s richest financiers exhumed from his grave. After years of fighting, Ana gallart will finally find out if her DnA matches that of mallorca multi-millionaire banker Juan march.
March died in 1962, he had become one of the most successful Spanish bankers of the first half of the twentieth century. Gallart, who lives in Valencia, insists she is his daughter and is therefore entitled to a share of his fortune. She made the claims after discovering that her birth mother was a cook in the March household, when she gave birth in 1947. Her twin sister died at only eight months, she was adopted by a family in Valencia. She discovered her past after finding her biological mother was called Rosa, who had died a few years ago at the age of 62. She is so sure of the connection that she has risked her pension, plus the pension of her husband and mother to help cover 10,000 Euros in legal costs. She also borrowed money from family and friends, even though they know
they might not get it back. “I hadn’t questioned my past until I discovered that my birth certificate read of unknown parentage,” Gallart explained. “I wanted to know who I am and where I come from.”
A court agreed with her claims and March’s body was exhumed last week. The DNA results will be known in a few weeks. If Gallart is his daughter she will be entitled to a claim to the March fortune.

YouTube Bans Bullfight Videos
YouTube has sparked outrage in Spain after banning videos featuring bloody bullfights. The site pulled the plug on the pablolr89 channel, believed to be run by user Pablo Lopez Riobo, after saying its content was too gory.
A spokesman from the U.S. firm told El Mundo newspaper people could still post videos “of bulls with the cape or the bullfighter’s stick.” But those featuring blood and where the bull is speared or killed are now banned. He added: “We can eliminate any content that doesn’t meet our content requirements without giving prior notice.” The move has sparked a backlash in Spain, where there are more than 2,000 bullfights
13
each year. Some have accused YouTube of double standards, in allowing sexually suggestive clips to remain. Others said the site was simply sucking up to the anti-bullfighting lobby. Twitter users were quick to respond to the ban. @MiguelFalcon1 said he would boycott the site, whilst @josejdiaz_spain said the prohibition was “shameful”. A petition has also been set up on the Change.org website calling for YouTube to reinstate the channel. It states: “We present this petition for the immediate reinstatement of the channel of pablolr89, deleted because of its taurine content. We ask for freedom and that you listen to us. This channel does no harm to anyone.”
“Mouse” The Bull Dies Spanish Evictions Hit
New Record In 2012
A fighting bull called “Mouse”, one of the most popular and most feared beasts in Spanish town festivals after he killed three people, has died.
El Pais newspaper reported that the 12-year-old black-and-white bull, which weighed 550 kilograms (1,200 pounds), died last Sunday on a ranch in the eastern town of Sueca. Owner Gregorio de Jesus told the newspaper he intended stuffing the beast and putting him on display at the ranch. The bull, known as “Ra-
ton” (Mouse) in Spanish, was a leading attraction in bullrunning events during town summer festivals because of his lethal charges. Town halls were reported
to have paid up to $18,000 to have him in their festivals. Around 3,000 people turned out for his final run before he was retired in September 2011.
ussian R Adoption Agreement
Russia will sign an adoption agreement with Spain. Russia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov said that the agreement was going through its final stages.
After the agreement is approved, the foreign Ministry of the Russian Federation plans to develop similar agreements with the United Kingdom and Israel. Negotiations are already underway with Ireland, Cyprus, Slovenia, New Zealand and Malta. According to the minis-
Eviction procedures in Spanish courts for unpaid mortgages and rent hit a new record in 2012, averaging more than 200 per day. Spain’s legal system executed 75,605 eviction orders in 2012, a 16.7% increase over the previous year. According to the General Council of Judicial Power, 64,770 eviction orders were carried out in 2011.
The total number of eviction orders executed by courts since 2008 now stands at 252,826 after a decadelong property bubble burst and Spain sank into recession, throwing millions out of work and unable to keep up mortgage or rent payments.
The jump in evictions has become a political sticking point due to the number of suicides by people who were about to be thrown out of their homes and television images of weeping families forced out on the street. It has also sparked a protest movement which sends activists to block the entrance to homes of people about to be evicted in order to prevent police from forcibly removing them from their homes.
Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s conservative government passed a decree in November which freezes evictions of the most vulnerable homeowners. The two-year freeze on evictions applies to families earning less than 1,600 euros per month and also meet other conditions such as having a child under three, at least three children, a disabled dependent or being unemployed without benefits.
Extradition to Spain blocked ter, citizens of these countries adopt Russian children regularly. At present, there are two agreements in place with Italy and France. One of the important conditions of such agreements is the preservation of Russian citizenship for Russian children after their adoption. In addition, the document stipulates foreign adoptive parents should register their child at the Russian consulate office, and provide regular reports on his life conditions and education.
The extradition of a man wanted in Spain for alleged drug smuggling has been blocked by the High Court. A judge ruled the European Arrest Warrant (EAW) which led to the arrest of Craig Pinnick was legally flawed. Mr Pinnick, from Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, is wanted in Spain accused of conspiring to import 50kg of cocaine. Mr Justice Ouseley quashed a previous extradition order and refused lawyers permission to contest his judgement. If he had been extradited and found guilty Mr Pinnick could have faced a maximum jail sentence of six years. The deputy chief magistrate at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, Emma Arbuthnot, had ordered he be extradited on 1 February this year. But Mr Justice Ouseley, sitting at the
High Court, allowed Mr Pinnick’s appeal and said the order must be quashed. The judge said a Spanish police report was “annexed to the warrant containing relevant information that was necessary to validate the warrant”. But, under European extradition law, an EAW was “contemplated as being a single document rather than a multiplicity of documents. Construing the EAW without the police report, it is accepted that it is not a valid EAW, and so... this appeal must succeed,” the judge ruled. The judge refused lawyers acting on behalf of the Spanish judicial authorities’ permission to appeal against his ruling. And he said what had occurred was “not a general problem” with European Arrest Warrants. “As I understand it, it is the first time this problem has arisen,” he said.

Tourism Armstrong investigated Medical Could in Spain Boost Economy lAnCe Armstrong is under investigation for possible criminal charges in spain, according to sources. reports both in the united states and spain said the investigation relates to Armstrong’s doping activities, which were spelled out in a u.s. Anti-Doping Agency report.
Spanish sources believe crimes may have been committed in Spain and they are investigating if charges should be brought against Armstrong and his Spanish associates who worked with him on the U.S. Postal Service cycling team. The investigation covers Alicante, Valencia, Girona and Tenerife. Spanish law does not make it a crime for an athlete to use performance enhancing drugs for personal use. In certain cases, athletes can be fined and have their licenses suspended. However, if investigators can prove “trafficking, distribution and commercialization of doping drugs,” that is a criminal offense carrying as many as two years in prison and fines of as much as 400,000 euros. In 2004, Armstrong lived in Spain with the singer Sheryl Crow. Armstrong’s former cycling teammate; Floyd Landis, has said that he looked after Armstrong’s “blood fridge” in Spain “to make sure the temperature remained con-

stant” when Armstrong travelled out of town with Crow. Spain is currently staging a bid for the 2020 Olympics. The country has been seen as soft on sports doping in the past and has been working hard to change that image. In an interview with a German television station, the director of Spain’s
anti-doping authority, Ana Munoz, said, “What I can tell you so far is that we are following up on the Armstrong case. Not only because we were involved in the investigation back then but also because we are really interested that every person, Spanish or not, who has committed a crime in our country be prosecuted.”
Head of cardiovascular surgery at Malaga’s Clínico Universitario hospital, Dr Miguel Such, said: “Our objective is to attract foreign patients to Malaga’s many good private health centres and put Malaga on the global healthcare map. Spain’s tourism sector has been ignoring this market and we have been selling sun and sea without realizing that we could do much more. Our healthcare system is well regarded internationally, and
there is significant demand from foreigners to use it.” Prices for treatment in Spain is about 30% - 70% cheaper compared to that of the UK and for patients from the US the savings are even greater; nose re-shaping in a private UK clinic costs a patient anywhere between 3,535 Euros and 4,710 Euros, but in Spain the same surgery is available for around 2,400 Euros. Knee and hip replacements are also around half what they are in Britain. Its reputation and high standards of care mean the Spanish healthcare system is currently ranked seventh in the world by the World Health Organization.

Mammoth Baby
J
ade Packer, 21, has spoken of her shock after giving birth to a baby who weighed an eye watering 15lb 7oz. George King was starved of oxygen for ten minutes and was given just a 10% chance of survival after his shoulders got stuck during delivery.
However, six weeks later George, the biggest baby ever born in Gloucestershire, has been allowed to go home to Reddings, Cheltenham, with his parents. George weighed almost twice that of an average baby when he was born at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital on February 11 following a 16-hour labour. Now, aged just six weeks, he is already 2ft 2in long, weighs almost 17 lbs. and can only fit into baby clothes designed for a six month old. Ms Packer said: “His shoulders got stuck and that is when everything kicked off. There were about
20 doctors in the room and that is when it got really scary. My mum was there at the birth and she was quite scared and shocked as well. Everyone was shocked that he was so big. He is a little miracle – a big miracle actually!” After his birth George was placed into the special baby unit at St Michael’s Hospital in Bristol. But six weeks later, the new family are settling into family life. Ms Packer, who is 5ft 7in tall, says it has put her off having any more children in case they are equally gigantic: “It was a massive shock for everyone - no-one had any idea he would be this big. During the pregnancy I was just getting bigger and bigger. It makes it even more special to have him home now after all he has been through.’ Father Ryan King, 21, a 6ft 2in chef, said it had been a scary situation: “We were told everything was normal until he popped out. It was scary because his shoulders got stuck and the staff told us he probably wouldn’t survive. But now we
15
are home, we are getting used to family life together. Everyone has said his size will level out and he will grow at a normal rate.’ During their ordeal the new parents, who have been together for three years, were supported by Bristol-based baby charity Cots for Tots, who gave them accommodation so they did not have to travel from Cheltenham to see George. So far this giant baby is showing no signs of having suffered any adverse effects as a result of his traumatic birth but he is continues to be closely monitored.
Doctor May Have Killed 300 Patients
Virginia Helena Soares de Souza, a Brazilian doctor, has been charged with killing seven patients at a hospital, but it is thought she could be responsible for up to 300 more deaths, an investigation has revealed.
De Souza and her medical team gave muscle relaxant drugs to patients, reduced their oxygen supply, causing them to die of asphyxiation, prosecutors claim. The doctor and her seven assistants are suspected of injecting patients with “drug cocktails” and tampering with their respirators, a health ministry official has reported. Prosecutors say that taped phone conversations reveal that her motive was to free up beds for other patients at an intensive care unit, which she was in charge of: “I want to clear the intensive care unit. It’s making me itch,” she allegedly said in one recording released to Brazilian media. Unfortunately, our mission is to be go-betweens on the springboard to the next life,” she reportedly added in the same call. Prosecutors said De Souza felt “all powerful” running the unit, to the point where she “had the power to decree the moment when a victim would die”. In some cases, she was absent from the hospital and but gave instructions to end the life of a patient by phone to members of her medical team, it was alleged. The 56-year-old widow was arrested in February and charged with seven counts of aggravated first degree murder. She was re-
leased on bail a week ago pending the outcome of the investigation. Three other doctors, three nurses and a physiotherapist who worked for her have also been charged with murder. More cases are expected to emerge as investigators search 1,700 medical records of patients who died over the last seven years
at the Evangelical Hospital in the southern city of Curitiba. “We already have more than 20 cases established, and there are nearly 300 more that we are looking into,” the chief investigator assigned by Brazil’s health ministry, Dr Mario Lobato, told local reporters. He said the deaths so far reviewed happened under similar cir-
cumstances: a muscle relaxant such as Pancuronium was administered, increasing the patients’ dependence on artificial respiration; then the oxygen supply was reduced, causing death by asphyxiation. Some of the patients were conscious moments before they died, he said. De Souza’s lawyer, Elias Mattar
Assad, said investigators did not understand how an intensive care unit works and she would prove her innocence. If prosecutors prove De Souza was responsible for 300 deaths, it could be one of the world’s worst serial killings, rivalling the case of British GP Harold Shipman who killed at least 215 patients.

The teenager was visiting the house in Chaucer Grove, Atherton, near Wigan, and was alone with the dogs, believed to include two bull mastiffs and two Staffordshire bull terriers. Police were called to the house after reports that she was lying unconscious at the house.
Four animals were subsequently shot by police marksmen, a fifth dog was contained. Superintendent Mark Kenny, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “This remains a deeply distressing incident for everyone involved and the wider community and our thoughts continue to be with Jade’s family. They are understandably devastated by what has happened, as are Jade’s circle of friends. Our response is now two-fold - to continue to provide whatever support is necessary to the family alongside a painstaking investigation to establish the truth of what happened.” Flowers were laid at the backyard where Jade was attacked. A sign on the gate read: “Beware of the Dog.” There had been no previous complaints about the animals. Local councillor, Norman Bradbury, said the whole community was in shock: “We need to establish what occurred with this horrible incident and how it can be avoided in future but we have to wait for the police to investigate what happened, how Jade died and the circumstances.” Locals said Jade was visiting the property to see a friend, Kimberley Concannon, 16, who lives there with her twin Catrina and mother Beverley Concannon. Jade is thought to have returned to the property from the shops with a meat pie when she was attacked Youngsters who knew Jade said they had spoken to Kimberley’s twin

Teenage Girl Killed By Pack Of Dogs sister, Catrina, who was not at the property when the dog attack happened. One 15-year-old said of Jade: “She goes to my school in the year below. “She’s shy, quiet timid; if you didn’t know her you wouldn’t recognise her around and about. It’s horrible what’s happened. She picks her little sister up Sienna from school, every day and walks past my house. She had a pie in her hand and has gone to bite it, she moved the pie and the dog’s gone for her throat and then they have all gone for her.” Another friend said the dogs at the house were large and aggressive animals: “Every time you walk past the house they would be barking and barking and going mad,” she said. “You would jump out of your skin.” Jade was a pupil at Fred Long-
worth High School in Tyldesley, which closed for the Easter break last Friday. Headteacher Janet Garretts said: “We are all deeply shocked and saddened by Jade’s tragic death. She had only been a pupil at the school since the summer but had made a real impact in that short time. Jade was a lively student who always had a smile on her face. She loved music and dance and was a regular at our after school dancing club. At what turned out to be her last day at school, Jade was given a progress report by her teachers and told everyone was delighted with the progress she was making.” More than 10,000 people joined a Facebook group created to pay tribute to Jade, including the aunt of a four-year-old boy who was killed by a banned breed of dog.
John-Paul Massey died at his grandmother’s house in Liverpool after suffering “massive injuries” inflicted by a pitbull. Tricia Massey wrote on Jade’s page: “Such a tragic thing to happen. I know what your poor family must be going through and how they are feeling, I lost my four-yearold nephew three years ago. He was
killed by a dangerous dog in Liverpool. Something needs to be done about these aggressive animals. Sleep tight Jade, I’m sure my JohnPaul will look after you.” Natasha Hunt posted: “RIP my beautiful baby girl! Don’t know what I’m going do without you! Love you loads, you will never be forgotten, you will always be in my heart.”
world to pray for our beloved Madiba and his family and to keep them in their thoughts. We have full confidence in the medical team and know that they will do everything possible to ensure recovery.”
Mr Mandela’s spokesman, Mac Maharaj, confirmed that the former president was “conscious”. He said: “At the moment doctors are saying it is a recurrence of an old lung infection. It is a matter of concern ... He was admitted around midnight last night. They are doing everything they can to keep him comfortable and happy.” He said that last time he had seen Mr Mandela, aged 94, he had been frail but in a “good frame of mind”. Mr Mandela spent 18 days in hospital last December; he was treated for a lung infection and gallstones. He was discharged on December 27, but doctors warned he was “not yet fully recovered” and he continued
to receive medical treatment at his Johannesburg home, including being given extra oxygen. Mr Mandela has had recurring lung problems since contracting tuberculosis in 1988, during his 27 years in prison under the apartheid regime. The Nobel Peace Laureate again spent a night in hospital on March 9 for what was described as a scheduled medical check-up. However, it is now understood that the visit was for more treatment for the lung infection; he is believed to have had his lungs drained. There are now significant concerns for his health. In February 2012 Mr Mandela, who is known as Madiba in South Af-
rica, spent the night in hospital after a minor exploratory procedure to investigate persistent abdominal pain, and in 2001 he had radiotherapy treatment for prostate cancer. Mr Mandela, who was released from prison in 1990, suffered damage to his tear glands because of being forced to smash limestone rocks in the quarry on Robben Island due to the alkalinity of the stone. He had cataract surgery at the age of 75, in 1994, a few months after being sworn in as president. Mr Mandela stepped down after one term as president. He has not appeared in public since South Africa’s World Cup final in 2010, six years after retiring.

new Era in Cancer Diagnosis
sCientists have hailed the dawn of a new era in cancer diagnosis and treatment as research has found dozens of common genetic changes that can increase the risk of the disease. tests on 250,000 patients found 83 inherited variations in the DnA code that could either raise or lower the chances of developing breast, ovarian or prostate cancer. the findings will allow doctors to identify women with a near 100% chance of developing breast cancer, and men with a one in
two risk of prostate cancer.
Together the cancers affect almost 100,000 people a year in the UK. More than 26,000 of them die. Around 57% of cancer risk is set by genetic factors, with lifestyle making up the rest. Professor Ros Eeles from The Institute of Cancer Research said: “These results are the single biggest leap forward in finding the genetic causes of prostate cancer yet made. They allow us, for the first time, to identify men who have a very high risk of developing prostate cancer during their lifetime through inheritance of genetic variants. If we can show from further studies that such men benefit from regular screening we could have a
big impact on the number of men dying from the disease.” This is the largest study of its kind, involving around 1,000 scientists around the world. They analysed DNA for tiny changes that could change the way genes work, altering cancer risk as a result. In the near future patients could visit their GP who could then run a £30 test on their DNA in the surgery. They would then have an individual risk profile for some of the most common cancers. The most immediate practical use of the research could be in women who carry the inherited breast cancer gene BRCA1. On average they face a 70% risk of developing breast cancer during their lifetime.
But the new genetic variants can give women much more detail on their risk. If they also inherit several of the newly identified high risk changes to their DNA their chances of developing the disease are raised to between 90 and 100%. But if they inherit the protective DNA changes, their risk drops to below 30%. Scientists say it could help women with the BRCA gene decide whether to have a preventative mastectomy. Sha-
ron Osborne had her breasts removed last year because she carried the gene. Another of the researchers, Professor Montse GarciaClosas, said the study was a “huge step” in understanding the causes of breast cancer. “These findings will help us to predict who is at increased risk of developing the disease and who could benefit most from prevention strategies, such as lifestyle changes and chemo-prevention, and earlydetection strategies, such as
regular screening,” she said. Scientists believe there could be thousands of genetic variations that affect cancer risk. Patients with lung and colorectal cancers are to be tested as part of a study starting this summer The study was funded by Cancer Research UK and the Wellcome Trust. The results are published in a series of papers in journals including Nature Genetics, PLOS Genetics, and the American Journal of Human Genetics.

“Chic” Queen
S
tella McCartney has credited the Queen as being “chic” after she was awarded an OBE by the 86-yearold monarch.
The daughter of former Beatle Sir Paul and Linda McCartney said at Buckingham Palace: “She looks very chic I thought, beautiful.” Then added: “It should have been Stella McCartney of course - I slipped her a card.” The designer said that the Queen had told her “You’ve been busy”, to which she replied: “Not as busy as you are.” Stella McCartney, who designed the Team GB and Paralympic GB Olympic kit, said: “I
feel amazing. I told the Queen I designed the kit for her nation. It’s pretty high up there and marks an incredible moment in your life.” One of those to wear the McCartney-designed outfits, Victoria Pendleton, was also at the Palace to pick up her OBE. “When I picked up an MBE in 2008 it was a bit of a whirlwind visit and I didn’t quite take it all in. This time I was more excited as the Queen presented me with my honour and said ‘here’s another one for your collection’.” Pendleton retired from cycling after winning gold in the keirin and silver in the sprint at the 2012 London Olympics. “This is special because it’s the culmination of eve-
19
rything I’ve done in sport. It’s the last 10 years of my life.” The 32-year-old now dedicates much of her time to getting more women into cycling. “Take the ‘Cycletta’; it’s a great way to get more women out on their bikes. It’s starting to work,” she said. Cycletta is the UK’s leading series of women-only bike rides supported by the Olympic Gold medallist. Also at Buckingham Palace to pick up a gong was gold medal-winning Olympic triathlete Alistair Brownlee, who was keen to poke fun at his brother who won bronze. “Picking up an MBE is such a massive honour, but what makes it just that little bit better is the fact Jonathan hasn’t got one,” he said.
Overseas Driving App Launched
118 War Heroes Recognised Lance Corporal Abbie Martin, 20, said she was “petrified” as she treated the injured comrade in Afghanistan with bullets flying overhead - but “my training kicked in”. The medic is one of 118 heroes to receive a military bravery award.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has launched a new app which gives specific road safety advice to Britons driving abroad. High numbers of crashes involving British tourists and expats in popular destinations, including Thailand, Australia and Spain, has sparked a campaign to improve road safety.
As part of the campaign, the Foreign and Commonwealth office is launching the online tool, available at www. fcowidget.com/
Road conditions, driving standards and laws vary widely; some countries experience much higher rates of road traffic accidents and fatalities than the UK. In Thailand alone, a country with 50,000 British residents and more than 870,000 British visitors every year, there were 68,852 road traffic incidents, resulting in 9,205 deaths involving both Thai residents and tourists in 2011. In comparison, 1,901 people were killed in road accidents in the UK in 2011. After natural causes, road crashes are the most common cause of death for British nationals in Thailand. Ambassador to the King-
dom of Thailand, Mark Kent, said: “British nationals using the roads in Thailand should bear in mind that road laws and driving customs here are different from those in the UK and road conditions, driving standards and road traffic regulations can vary. Road traffic accidents can have a profound effect on both those individuals involved and their families. Accidents do occur and not all tragedies are avoidable, but the outcome could be very different with many lives being saved and critical injuries reduced if people adopted the same safety precautions abroad that they would naturally take at home.”
Many countries in Europe have unusual road laws which Britons may be unaware of. These include:
• France - drivers are required to carry a breathalyser • Belarus - it is illegal to drive a dirty car • Serbia - drivers must have a tow bar and 3m of rope in their vehicle • Spain - if you wear glasses, you are required to carry an additional pair when driving
A week after Lance-Corporal James Ashworth became the first recipient of the Victoria Cross since 2006 after being awarded it posthumously, Captain Michael Dobbin, 28, from the Grenadier Guards, who was on the same patrol as L Cpl Ashworth, is to receive the Military Cross. He personally led a 200m charge at insurgents in Nahr-e-Saraj last summer. L/Cpl Martin, 20, told how she was on her first tour of duty and leapt into action when she heard there was a “man down” on the battlefield. “At first I was hiding and then everyone was giving me fire support so I could get to the guy and treat him,” she said. “I was just thinking about the casualty - all the things I could do for him - my training just kicked in as well as not getting shot.” She added: “It was the most petrifying experience of my life but I knew I had that job and I had to do it.” Several days later, despite a struggle to come to terms with the horror of her first patrol, she treated multiple casualties after a grenade blast, saving all the injured. L/Cpl Martin has been awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service, which recognises meritorious service during, or in support of, operations. The list also includes Lance Corporal Lawrence Kayser, from Woodton, Norfolk, who is awarded the Military Cross. He saved colleagues from a “potentially disastrous situation” in Helmand in June 2012 when his platoon came upon the enemy while preparing an ambush. When he and his platoon suddenly came under fire, the 27-year-old leapt from a ditch and charged Taliban fighters. He shot one enemy in his path before being hit by shrapnel from a grenade, which wounded his arm, but fought on, driving insurgents out of the compound. He said: “I am really humbled; my
platoon is made up of the best members of the Battalion. It’s not my medal, even though part of that incident I was alone, I wasn’t truly alone.” Also honoured are Sergeant Roy Geddes, 43, from the RAF Regiment, and Corporal Kurt Lee, also from the RAF. The pair battled insurgents when they attacked Camp Bastion in September last year, where Prince Harry was serving his tour of duty as an Apache gunner. Sgt Geddes, from Elgin, Monmouthshire, receives the Military Cross after it is said he “breathed fire into the spirit of his men” when Camp Bastion was attacked. He fought on despite being wounded in the knee after one of his vehicles was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. Sgt Geddes is only the second member of the RAF to receive the MC for action in Afghanistan. He is recognised alongside Cpl Lee, 28, from Bury, Lancashire, who is Mentioned In Despatches for his own role in the battle. Praising the recipients of the honours, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: “In a changing world the bravery and commitment to duty of our servicemen and women remains unswerving. Whether fighting for our security on operations abroad or rescuing mountaineers and sailors within the British Isles, they deserve our gratitude and respect. I hope that the awards announced today go some way to underlining how much this country values the efforts and sacrifices of our Armed Forces.”

soul singer Dionne Warwick, 72, has filed for bankruptcy after it emerged she owes nearly $10m (£6.6m) in back taxes. in a petition filed in new Jersey, Warwick lists liabilities that include nearly $7m (£4.6m) owed to the internal revenue service (irs) for the years 1991 to 1999 and more than $3m (£1.98m) in business taxes owed to the state of California.
time, and bathe in serenity. Bamboo fabric is created from the bamboo pulp and is 100% biodegradable. It is also anti-bacterial and hypoallergenic; bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and resists mould, mildew, fungi and dust mites. These properties remain intact, making it suitable for those with eczema, hyper-sensitive skin or hay fever caused by dust mite. Even better news is that bamboo fabric require less frequent washing, it needs no more than a 30˚C wash
and dries in half the time of cotton. Tumble dry low and remove from dryer as soon as it stops to avoid unnecessary creasing. The only place that actually stocks these delicious items is Antiquities Tenerife in Las Chafiras. The have stock in three different colours, soft brown, grey and aubergine and at the moment they have an offer for one bath towel and a hand towel for just 15,00 Euros. Pop in and see them and feel the difference for yourself.
The Walk On By and I Say A Little Prayer singer also lists around $21,000 (£13,800) in monthly income, but average outgoings of $20,940, leaving her with just $10 a month after covering her expenses. Warwick’s publicist Kevin Sasaki said the singer had been victimised by bad financial management and added she has paid back the actual amount of the taxes, but penalties and interest have accumulated over the years. Mr Sasaki said: “In light of the magnitude of her tax liabilities, Warwick has repeatedly attempted to offer re-payment plans and proposals to the IRS and the California Franchise Tax Board for taxes owed. These plans were not accepted, resulting in escalating interest and penalties.” A cousin of Whitney Houston, Warwick was a five-time Grammy award winner; she won her first in 1968 with Do You Know The Way To San Jose? And her second two years later for the album I’ll Never Fall In Love Again.

Meredith Murder Set For Retrial
Amanda Knox and her Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, who were originally sentenced to 26 and 25 years in prison for killing and sexually assaulting Meredith Kercher in 2007, were acquitted on appeal in 2011 after spending four years in prison. Now Italy’s highest criminal court has overturned the acquittal, and ordered a retrial. Ms Kercher, 21, was found halfnaked with her throat slashed lying in a pool of blood in her bedroom in the house that she shared with Knox in Perugia in November 2007. The sister of the murdered Briton, Stephanie Kercher, said that her family welcomed the ruling by the Italian court said that there are “still questions that are unanswered and we are all looking to find out the truth”. Rudy Guede was convicted along with others so we need to find out who those other people are but as a family we know there is still a long way to go. We welcome the decision that a retrial has been ordered and are pleased it is a step forward to finding an answer to some of those questions,” she added. The Kercher family insists that 47 knife wounds on Meredith and the apparent use of two different knives in the attack meant that more than one killer was involved, leaving the second murderer still at large. Reacting to the Supreme Court’s decision, Knox said it was “painful”
to have the acquittal overturned “when the prosecution’s theory of my involvement in Meredith’s murder has been repeatedly revealed to be completely unfounded and unfair”. In her statement following the Supreme Court’s decision,
Knox said: “I believe that any questions as to my innocence must be examined by an objective investigation and a capable prosecution. The prosecution responsible for the many discrepancies in their work must be made to answer for
them, for Raffaele’s sake, my sake, and most especially for the sake of Meredith’s family. Our hearts go out to them. No matter what happens, my family and I will face this continuing legal battle as we always have, confident in the truth
Lollobrigida Sells Her Diamonds For Research
Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida, one of the leading sex symbols of the 1950s and 1960s, is selling some of her diamond jewellery to raise money for stem cell research. She says it is now time to give back for the fortunate life she has had.
Lollobrigida said she would donate the proceeds to a fund to set up a hospital for stem cell research. “This will not be the end of the jewellery but it will be something that does good,” she said, “helping a cause that is very important to me. I want to leave a souvenir of my life.” After a humble, rural upbringing, Lollobrigida played opposite Hollywood stars such as Humphrey Bogart, Rock Hudson, Burt Lancaster, Tony Curtis and Frank Sinatra. As her career took off in France, Italy and Hollywood, Lollobrigida said she started to collect jewels from Bulgari, always buying them herself and enjoying the purchasing power of her hard work. Now, aged 85, and having left acting to pursue her other interests of photojournalism, humanitarian work and sculpting, Lollobrigida says it is time to put the jewellery to good use. Around 22 pieces from her collection will be auctioned by Sotheby’s in Geneva on May 14 after going on display in London, New
York and Rome. The pieces include a pair of pearl and diamond pendant earrings made in 1964 that are expected to sell for up to $1m (£660,000), a 19.03 carat diamond ring of around the same price mark and a 1954 diamond necklace/bracelet combination worth up to $500,000. She is also selling a pair of emerald and diamond ear clips that she was photographed wearing one evening in 1965 with artist Salvador Dali. They are expected to reach up to $250,000 (£164,000). Lollobrigida, a former student at Rome’s Academy of Fine Art before she was spotted in a beauty contest by Italian film director Vittorio de Sica, now
focuses her time on sculpture so has little need for jewellery. Over the past 10 years she has exhibited her work in Moscow, Paris and Venice. She said art was always her dream career but she ended up in acting by chance, appearing in movies such as The World’s Most Beautiful Woman, Solomon and Sheba and Come September. “Acting was not my desire but at the end of things it was destiny that I did this,” she said. “It was a very interesting experience and without the money I could not do what I like in sculpture. To do something in life, not to gain but only to enjoy life, that is the richness in life. I am lucky I can do that.”

and with our heads held high in the face of wrongful accusations and unreasonable adversity.” Knox, 25, returned home to Seattle immediately after her release. It is likely that she will be tried in absentia in the new trial, due to take place in Florence, because the U.S. does not extradite its citizens to face legal action. A date for the retrial has not yet been set, but it is thought it could be as early as the summer. It is understood that all the DNA evidence will be reviewed. A third person, Ivory Coast-born drifter Rudy Guede, who like the other two has always denied the murder, is the only person still in prison for the crime. He chose to undergo a separate, fast-track trial in 2008, he was found guilty of sexual assault and murder and sentenced to 30 years in prison, reduced to 16 years on appeal. Knox had been scheduled to speak about the trial for the first time on American television in April, when her book about the case, called Waiting To Be Heard, is due to be released. Sollecito, who turned 29 on Tuesday, now lives with his family near Bari in southern Italy. Before the decision was known, Giulia Bongiorno, the lawyer representing him said she was convinced the court would not over-rule the acquittal: “We are hopeful. We know Raffaele Sollecito is absolutely innocent and we expect that it ends here. Even if it doesn’t end here we just need to follow the précis, but I am convinced this case will end here,” she said before entering the court.
Seal Pup Found Miles From Water
A seal pup found in a forest in eastern Sweden, almost four miles (6.4km) from the nearest water is thought to have crawled 1.8 miles (3km) over sea ice and the same distance into the woods.
Uppsala police inspector Henrik Pederson said they received a confused call from a hunter who said he was out walking in the woods where he had found a seal pup,” I thought he was joking at first.” Robert Sandefors was asked by police to take care of the pup until assistance arrived. “He must have gotten
separated from his mother and gotten lost and gone in the wrong direction,” he told a local radio station. He said tracks visible in the snow supported the idea the seal had made its own way into the forest The seal was taken to the nearby Dalaelven River, where it was released and swam away.
22 Baby Shot Mugging Horror

t
Wo teenage boys, aged 14 and 17, have been charged with murder over the death of a 13-month-old baby, shot dead as his mother pushed him in a buggy in Brunswick, georgia.
The 17-year-old, identified as Demarquis Elkins, was charged as an adult, while the 14-year-old was not named because he is a minor. Mother Sherry West told police that two boys approached her and demanded money as she walked with 13-month-old Antonio in his buggy. She said she told the muggers she had no money and tried to shield her boy, but one of them pushed her aside and shot the baby. “I put my arms over my baby and he shoves me, and then he shot my baby right in the head,”
Ms West said. She was shot in the leg and said her ear was grazed by a bullet. The boy’s father, Luis Santiago has been quoted as saying: “He was special ... He had the bluest, bluest eyes.” Police said before the arrests that they had been looking at school attendance records as part of their investigation. Brunswick police spokesman Todd Rhodes asked the public for any tips or information that could lead to an arrest, and announced a $10,000 (£6,500) reward.

Shark Attack
A CAnADiAn tourist captured footage of the moment a great white shark tried to smash through a diving cage off south Africa, on his mobile phone. the video shows the moment the shark crashes its head into the cage as divers try to get out of the way. onlookers can be heard screaming and swearing.
Bryan Plummer, who filmed the video, said he only decided to go on the trip because his sister and friends were visiting him from Canada: “Shark diving is one of the things to do in South Africa so we kind of figured why not. It wasn’t on my list of things I had to do while I was here but with them being there I thought we would.” Mr Plummer spent about 25 minutes in the water watching three sharks that had swum close to the cage after a tuna head had been
thrown out by the crew as bait. “When our time was up, I jumped out, got dry and picked up my iPhone - it’s kind of an expensive outing so I wanted to catch as much as I could,” he said. As they watched, the great white pushed its head through the gap in the front of the cage designed to give divers an unobstructed view. Twisting and turning, half in and half out of the cage the divers can be seen in the footage darting away before the scene is obscured by the thrashing of the shark. “We saw some red in the water and we thought for sure that the guy in the cage had been bit ... people started screaming and I ended up swearing,” Mr Plummer said. “I realised something bad was happening but the film was already rolling so carried on and then yelled ‘get back, get back’ as I didn’t really know what was going to happen. There were some women who were losing their minds because they thought
this guy had had his head bit off.” But after a few seconds the great white swam away and the divers in the cage emerged unscathed. One diver told the others on the boat he had escaped the shark’s jaws by swimming down below the opening and out of its reach. “Roger Grey popped up and had a huge scream of joy. I can’t even imagine what he saw down there but his reaction dictated the mood
on the boat,” Mr Plummer said. “He took it very well considering.” Mr Plummer and his friends even returned to the cage for a second dive after the attack. “I was definitely much more alert the second time, much more aware of where I was putting my fingers and toes, it kind of brought me back to reality. I do believe it was a freak accident and it wouldn’t happen again ... but it I have never really been that totally into sharks.

Prince Harry Returns To The US
Although Prince Harry will return to the States in May, he will not visit Las Vegas, where he was photographed frolicking naked with a woman. Pictures of the naked prince partying in ‘Sin City’ were published around the world completely overshadowing his last visit.
In January, the third-in-line to the throne admitted he was probably being “too much ‘Army’ and not enough ‘prince’”. “At the end of the day I probably let myself down, I let my family down and let other people down, but I was in a private area and there should have been a certain amount of privacy that one should expect,” he said. St James’s Palace announced he
would be representing a number of charities and the Government, with the central theme of the trip being supporting injured servicemen and women from both Britain and the US. During his visit Harry will watch the opening ceremony of the Warrior Games, in which wounded troops compete in Paralympic-style competitions. A British team will take part in the annual event in Colorado Springs for the first time. Prince Harry has previously met troops who have taken part as individuals. Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Harry’s private secretary, said: “Prince Harry wants to highlight once again the extraordinary commitment and sacrifice of our injured servicemen and women - our wounded warriors. Although a Prince, Harry is also an operational soldier - indeed he’s a sol-
dier’s soldier - therefore throughout this briefing the recurring theme is to help recognise and bring a spotlight onto the work being done to help these outstanding young men and women.” Also among his engagements will be a visit to Arlington National Ceremony, where more than 400,000 fallen American troops, veterans and their families are buried, and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre. In Washington DC, Prince Harry will attend an exhibition on Capitol Hill about landmine clearing. Earlier this month, it was announced that he would follow in the footsteps of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales, by becoming the patron of the HALO Trust, which aims to clear landmines and unexploded ordnance from war-torn countries.
The Most Expensive Penthouse In The World Renowned for its casinos and yacht-filled marinas, Monaco has become a magnet for the richest and most demanding property tycoons in the world. And now it could be home to a multi-storey penthouse which could become the world’s most expensive property when it goes onto the market next year.
At a height of 170m (557ft), the Odeon Tower will be the Mediterranean coastline’s second tallest building. The twin towers will contain 70 luxury apartments each with between one and six bedrooms. Also available will be two sky duplexes and a 1,200sq m penthouse. At the top will be a spectacular 3,300 sq metre multi-
story penthouse complete with private water slide and exclusive infinity pool. One estimate for the value of this apartment suggests it could fetch as much as £256m when it is released onto the market in 2014. Each apartment will have floor-to-ceiling windows and private terraces with panoramic views of Monaco, Larvotto beach and the Ligurian Sea. The block will have Russian and Turkish saunas, several swimming pools, private spas, a full-time concierge, private chauffeured limousines and a cinema. Housekeeping, dry cleaning and valet services will all be organised by residents from touchscreen controls in each apartment. As well as being within easy reach of the Italian Riviera, occupants can take advantage of annual local events such as Monaco’s Grand Prix
and Jazz Festival. Excavation and demolition work began on the towers in 2009, and the structural work is due to be finished by July 2013 before work can begin on the facade. The entire project is expected to be completed by July 2014. The project is the dream child of architect Alexander Giraldi, a master of “belle epoque” design - beautiful era – a period between 1871 and 1914 characterised by optimism and peace in Europe, and scientific discoveries. Responsibility for the apartment interiors has been given to the Alberto Pinto agency, whose previous clients include Saudi Arabian royalty and American captains of industry. The grounds will be designed by prominent landscape architect Jean Mus. Better put your name down quickly!

Death Penalty Call For Groundhog
Floating School For 100 Students
Makoko, a poverty stricken community on the flooded coastline of Nigeria’s capital and home to nearly 100,000 residents, who struggle to make their living by fishing, will soon have a threestorey floating school for its pupils. The new primary school in the Lagos slum is built on a foundation of 256 plastic drums, and powered by solar panels on the roof; it will be able to accommodate more than 100 students.
The building features an open recreational space on the first floor and several classrooms on the floors above. Nigerian architect Kunle Adeyemi, who was brought up in Lagos, Africa’s largest city, designed the floating building. He said that the school is part of a plan that he has envisioned for the community’s future. Residents of Makoko, which means “fishing village”, have dealt with the encroaching waters by building their houses on stilts for generations. But Mr Adeyemi has a new plan for residents. Instead of all houses being on stilts, he wants to offer to build float-

ing homes in Makoko as well. Water pollution and other environmental issues have resulted in a high death rate in the community. Every home of the community has around four children and most drop out of school at an early age. But Anthony Abraham, a school teacher in the community, hopes the new school will mean more children get to finish their education. “Their parents don’t have much power to help them to become a graduate,” he said. More than seven million children in Nigeria are deprived of the chance to receive education due to poverty, according to the Nigerian Ministry of Education.
An Ohio prosecutor has called for the death penalty for the rodent who wrongly predicted an early spring when he emerged from his Gobbler’s Knob home in Pennsylvania on February 2. As much of America still struggles with unseasonable temperatures and snowstorms, Butler County attorney Mike Gmoser issued his official-looking indictment. “The offence of MISREPRESENTATION OF EARLY SPRING, is an Unclassified Felony, and against the peace and dignity of the State Of Ohio,” he alleged. Phil acted “purposely, and with prior calculation and design, (to) cause the people to believe that spring would come early,” he added. “The people further find and specify that due to the aggravating circumstances and misrepresentation to the people that the death
penalty be implemented to the defendant, Punxsutawney Phil.” Legend has it that if the rodent does not see his shadow then an early spring is on the way. Spring officially began last Wednesday. But the National Weather Service predicts no imminent improvement in the weather for north eastern states, with isolated snow showers expected into the middle of next week. Mr Gmoser admits his indictment is more than a little tongue-in-cheek, but that did not stop Phil’s handlers rushing to his defence. John Griffiths declared the groundhog was innocent and would be acquitted. He pointed to several defences, including the fact that, since February 2, there have been some spring-like temperature spikes.
Fake Pilot Sparks Swinton In Glass Security Alert
Philippe Jeannard posed as a pilot sparking a security alert at Philadeplhia airport after he managed to take a seat in the cockpit of a US Airways jet. The Frenchman had a genuine ticket for the flight to Palm Beach, Florida, but tried unsuccessfully to get upgraded to business class.
However once on board, the 61-year-old from La Rochelle in western France, headed for the cockpit and sat down in the jump seat behind the captain’s chair, police said. He was wearing a white Air France shirt and a black leather jacket with epaulettes. He claimed he was a 747 pilot for the national carrier, but was unable to provide paperwork to the co-pilot.
Box “Performance”
Jeannard was told to take his seat in the cabin, while a flight attendant called police. Officers arrested him and recovered a counterfeit crew member identification card. “He had an Air France shirt. He had an Air France bag. He had some identification that looked like he was a crew member from Air France,” Captain Michael Murphy said. The Frenchman was charged with criminal tres-
pass, tampering with records, impersonating a privately employed person, and presenting a false ID. He is being held on $1m (£658,000) bail. The incident bears all the hallmarks of legendary American conman Frank Abagnale who posed as a Pan Am pilot to travel around the world. His true story was retold in the Leonardo DiCaprio movie Catch Me If You Can.
The Beach actress, Tilda Swinton has reprised one of her more unusual roles - sleeping in a glass box. The actress, who is known for both art house and mainstream films, is performing her oneperson piece at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
The Moonrise Kingdom star began presenting her work, which is called The Maybe, last Saturday. 52-year-old Swinton slept in a glass box for the day. The exhibit will change locations within the museum every time she performs. There is no published schedule for the piece, which will be staged six or so more times this year.
Swinton first performed the piece at the Serpentine Gallery in London in 1995. In 1996, the British star performed it in the Museo Barracco in Rome. Swinton won an Oscar in 2008 for best supporting actress for her role in legal drama Michael Clayton, which also starred George Clooney, Tom Wilkinson and Sydney
Pollack. Other films include Burn After Reading, The Beach and The Chronicles Of Narnia. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performances in The Deep End and We Need To Talk About Kevin. The actress was recently seen alongside David Bowie in the video for his single The Stars (Are Out Tonight).

Queen Volunteered Royal Wine Merchant For olympic Sketch Sells Chinese Wine
tHe mastermind behind london’s olympic opening ceremony, Danny Boyle, has revealed he did not actually ask the Queen to appear in his James Bond sketch, she volunteered.
TV viewers around the world were amazed to see the Queen appearing with Daniel Craig in the spoof sequence prior to her arrival in the Olympic Stadium last summer. Boyle told ITV’s Jonathan Ross Show he had originally thought he would have a lookalike taking part in the skit. The creative director of the ceremony explained: “It was part of the protocol you have to bring in the Head
of State and sing the National Anthem - and we thought we’d (do) something different, so we wrote up this idea of the James Bond idea. And we sent it in to them, and we were asking really for permission for them to accept that it wouldn’t embarrass them and we’d get a double, a good double, and we were thinking Helen Mirren. They came back and said ‘we’re delighted for you to do it, and Her Majesty would like to be in it herself’
- and the surreal thing, ‘she would like to play herself’.” The Oscar-winning director went on: “She said ‘what do you want me to do?’, and I told her and she said ‘fine’. So we got in and we started doing it and then she said ‘don’t you think I should say something?’ and I said ‘yes, OK, what do you suggest?’ “She said ‘I’ll do something’ and we started shooting and she turned round and she said her lines beautifully.”
tHe Queen’s wine merchant will be the first uk retailer to permanently stock Chinese wines.
The 314-year-old firm Berry Bros & Rudd (BBR) has confirmed it would sell four wines from a state-controlled chateau alongside the finest offerings from Bordeaux and Burgundy. BBR, which hilds royal warrants from both the Queen and Prince Charles, is to market bottles from China’s Chateau Changyu. They include cabernet, merlot and so-called ice wines made from frozen grapes. BBR buying director Mark Pardoe said: “China is already the eighth largest producer of wine in the world so it was only a matter of time before it entered the international market. And its huge geographical size and range of climates mean that there must be regions capable of producing good wine.” China is now expected to become the world’s sixth biggest producer within three years. The Chinese don’t usually drink wine, but they still manage to down 1.6 billion bottles a year through the
sheer size of the population. Its drinkers are now expected to increase consumption by 62.5%, downing another one billion bottles annually, by 2015. Mr Pardoe added: “Until now the country’s focus has been on its volume-driven domestic market, and other export efforts have been based on external investment. Changyu’s strategy represents a change, with home-grown investment in partnership with international expertise.” The chateau has been headhunting top talent abroad, seeking wine and brandy oenologists, stating it prefers applicants with experience in the Bordeaux and
Cognac regions of France. With wine now seen as a status symbol by the growing middle class, consumption of top Claret in China is now ranked second in the world, behind Germany. Although Waitrose temporarily trialled Chinese wine last year, BBR says this is the first time a UK retailer has sold it on a permanent basis. In 1997 Changyu Group restructured the assets of its four wine-making divisions and five other branches for a flotation on the Shanghai exchange as the Changyu Pioneer Wine Company Ltd. It issued 140 million stateowned shares and 88 million B shares, becoming the first listed winery in China.

Joe Weider, Schwarzenegger Mentor, Dies
Joe Weider, a leading figure in body building and the man who brought Arnold Schwarzenegger to America has died aged 93. The Canadian, who was a bodybuilder himself, helped popularise the sport and played a key role in introducing Schwarzenegger to the world.
Arnold Schwarzenegger paid tribute to his mentor and “father figure” the young Austrian weightlifter was brought to the US early in his career and Weider helped him achieve the American dream as he became an international movie star. “I knew about Joe Weider long before I met him. He was the godfather of fitness who told all of us to be somebody with a body. He taught us that through hard work and training we could all be champions. As I read his articles in Austria, I felt that
G
he was speaking directly to me and I committed to move to America to make my vision of becoming the best bodybuilder, to live the American dream, and to become an actor a reality.” Weider created one of bodybuilding’s leading events, the Mr Olympia competition, in 1965 and reportedly discovered the Austrian at a contest in Europe two years later. He relentlessly promoted Schwarzenegger, who won the Mr Olympia title a thenrecord seven times - every year from 1970 to 1975 and again in 1980. Weider also created the Ms Olympia contest in 1980, the Fitness Olympia in 1995 and the Figure Olympia in 2003. He spread the message of health and fitness worldwide with publications as Muscle & Fitness and Flex, of which The Terminator star is now the executive editor. Schwarzenegger, who was elected governor of California in 2003 and served two terms before retiring
eorge Lowe, the last surviving member of the team that made the first successful ascent of Mount Everest has died. His wife has revealed he died at a nursing home in the Derbyshire town of Ripley, at the age of 89. Lowe and his friend Edmund Hillary were the only New Zealanders on the 1953 British-led attempt to climb the world’s highest peak. They were part of a small group that established the final camp 1,000 feet below the mountain’s summit on May 28, 1953. The next day, Hillary and sherpa Tenzing Norgay of Nepal reached the 29,035 foot peak. As Hillary descended the next day, he met Lowe, walking towards him with soup and emergency oxygen. “Well, George,” Hillary recalled saying, “We knocked the bastard off.” “He and Hillary climbed together through life, really,” said travel writer Jan Morris, who was part of the Everest expedition as a journalist covering the story for The Times. “And when it came to the point near the summit, George had to play a subsidiary role. He climbed very high, he climbed to top camp and said goodbye to Hillary then helped him come down. He played a very important role.” New Zealand Prime Minister John
from politics, added: “Joe didn’t just inspire my earliest dreams; he made them come true the day he invited me to move to America to pursue my bodybuilding career. I will never forget his generosity. One of Joe’s greatest qualities is that he wasn’t just generous with his money; he freely gave of his time and expertise and became a father figure for me.” Weider once said of his protege: “Every sport needs a hero and I knew that Arnold was the right man.” Schwarzenegger also said he helped land him his first movie role, in Hercules In New York, by passing him off to the producers as a German Shakespearean actor. “He was there for me constantly throughout my life, and I will miss him dearly,” Schwarzenegger added. Born in Canada in 1919, Weider grew up in a tough area of Montreal. He said he was a small, skinny teenager who was being picked on by bullies when he discovered
the magazine Strength. He said he tried to join a local wrestling team, but was turned down by the coach who feared he was so small he would be hurt.
Weider built his own weights from scrap parts found in a railway yard and pumped them relentlessly. He was eventually invited to join a weightlifting club. He won

his first bodybuilding contest at the age of 17, and soon after began to publish his first magazine, Your Physique. He is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Betty.
Key said Lowe and Hillary made New Zealand a household name when they conquered Everest 60 years ago. “I was sad to hear of his death but remain very proud of these men’s achievements,” Mr Key said in a statement. Almost 4,000 people have now successfully climbed Everest, according to the Nepal Mountaineering Association, but the 1953 expedition remains an iconic moment in 20th-century adventure. Ms Morris said she was now the only survivor of the 1953 group. She said Lowe was “a gentleman in the old sense - very kind, very forceful, thoughtful and also a true adventurer, an unusual combination”.

Facebook.com/TenerifeWeekly The coast of El Medano has been declared by SEO/BirdLife as an important Bird Area (IBA), and part of this area has been protected as an area of special protection for birds (ZEPA) and named as a special Natural Reserve. Amongst the most threatened species in the area is the Kentish Plover. Due to Holy Week, El Medano is likely to attract an influx of visitors, it is the birds breeding season and a lot of activity in the area could cause a loss of both chicks and eggs. Officials have called for people to avoid travelling outside tracks and footpaths and not to throw or deposit rubbish outside of the correct places and, if anyone takes a dog, do not let them loose along the coastal strip.
t
He coast of el medano, is well known for its water sports, what it is less well known for is that it is an area of great ornithological interest; declared an area of importance for birds (iBA) and protected by the natura 2000 network and the network of ee.nn. Canary islands. The municipality of Granadilla and SEO/BirdLife have put together a campaign to provide more information about the birds in the specific area of El Medano in Granadilla de Abona. The Department of the environment, together with SEO/BirdLife, their aim is to raise awareness and protect the natural values of this unique area. A presentation of the project was attended by the Minister of environment of the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife, Ana Guadalupe Mora; the delegate of the Canary Islands of SEO/BirdLife, Cristina González, and Councillors of environment and services of the council, Jacob Donate and Juan Bello Rodriguez. The Environment Councillor explained that a brochure has been produced, aimed at both locals as well as tourists, in three languages outlining information about the birds most
characteristic of the area, sites where they can be most commonly found and their migration periods, as well as a map of the best places for observation. It also provides information about the main threats and some measures that citizens can take to help to preserve both the birds and the area. An information panel has also been set up in El Cabezo to provide general information and illustrations of the most representative species of the area, allowing users to identify and know the birds observed in situ. It is hoped that the panel will become a key gathering place for visitors and participants in the ornithological activities carried out in El Medano. The Department of environment has been developing several educational and outreach schemes with environmental volunteer activities in order to promote these unique areas since last summer. “This time we will have the help of Asociation de vecinos Bocinegro with whom we will have ornithological tours along the coast, monitors from SEO/BirdLife as well as visual and informative support material that will allow people to learn and expand their knowledge of the natural values of this coastal area, in such a way that will work with the City Council and help conservation. According to Jacob Donate, “the objective is to educate people in the conservation of nature and landscapes”.

West Ham Take over olympic Stadium
West Ham have been handed the keys for the olympic stadium after a deal for the london 2012 venue was finally agreed. the announcement brings to an end a seven-year battle for the venue in stratford between rival football clubs that was delayed by several legal challenges.
West Ham were named as preferred bidders ahead of Tottenham Hotspur and Leyton Orient, but negotiations with the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) proved lengthy and complicated. But now the deal has been signed off in West Ham’s favour and sees the Barclays Premier League club become anchor tenants, paying £2m a year on a 99-year lease. It has also been confirmed that the LLDC will receive a windfall payment should West Ham’s owners sell on the showcase venue within 10 years. The deal was finally agreed after the government agreed to pay an extra £25m towards the cost of converting the venue for football, taking the Treasury’s overall contri-
bution to £60m. It is also understood that West Ham upped their funding of the project from an initial offer of £5m to around £15m. The rest of the cost of adapting the stadium, estimated at between £150m and £190m, will come from sources including the Mayor of London’s budget, a £40m loan from Newham Council and a £20m loan from the LLDC. Plans for the revamped stadium were also unveiled, the facelift is due to be completed in time for the 2016-17 football season. It will be transformed into a 54,000-seater venue, with the Hammers now set to embark on a supporter consultation process.
Milestone
London Mayor Boris Johnson told reporters: “This is a truly momentous milestone for London’s spectacular Olympic Stadium, ensuring its credible and sustainable future. Through this deal with West Ham United FC, we are defying the gloomsters who predicted this landmark would become a dusty relic.” West Ham vice chairman Karren Brady insisted that the club intends
to “pay its way.” She told reporters: “We want to pay our way; we accept that we have to pay our way and myself and the two owners of West Ham have been very clear on that. We will put in a lump sum, we will pay a rent that will cover most of the running costs and then of course we’re sharing naming rights and other revenues. We accept that the cost of making it that world class stadium is coming from the government but we hope that over 99 years we pay back not only that but an awful lot more than that.” West Ham’s owners David Sullivan and David Gold said the deci-

Mistake
But former sports minister Richard Caborn branded the West Ham lease deal “the biggest mistake of the London Olympics”. He said that he welcomed the fact that the future of the stadium was now settled but insisted there has been unnecessary cost to the public purse: “This is the biggest mistake of the Olympics and lessons should be learned from this. West Ham are basically getting a stadium costing more than £600m
for just £15m and a small amount in annual rent. I do welcome the fact that the future of the stadium has finally been secured, but we should also realise that the public sector is picking up the tab. The mistake was made in 2006-7 when they [the Olympic Board] ruled football out of a retro-fit design as was done successfully in Manchester with the Commonwealth Games stadium.” An application by Leyton Orient for a judicial review of the decision to award West Ham preferred bidder status is still outstanding, but it is not expected that it will affect the outcome.

Batman Gang Taking on Justice League? iF rumours are true, summer 2015 just got another reason for fanboys to get excited. With “Avengers 2” and “star Wars episode 7” already announced by Disney, Warner Bros, the studio behind the massive hit Batman trilogy, are desperate to start their new superhero franchise, “Justice league of America.”
For the uninitiated, Justice League is DC comics answer to Marvel’s Avengers, although it would be more accurate to reverse that sentence, as the JLA first appeared in 1960 beating The Avengers by 3 years. It’s original members were Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash and Martian Manhunter although there have been dozens of other members. Now that Chris Nolan’s Batman Trilogy is complete he is acting as “godfather” to the
studio’s next comic book blockbuster “Man of Steel” so executives believe the next logical step would be to take the dream team of Chris Nolan as executive producer, Zack Snyder as director, his Man of Steel, Henry Cavill as Su-
perman and donning the Bat cowl once again, Christian Bale. It’s possible that plans include Ryan Reynolds, reprising his role of Green Lantern, but the movie was a critical and commercial flop and Reynolds has said he has “little or
no interest” in a JLA movie. This isn’t the first time attempts have been made to bring The League to Hollywood, in 2007 a project by director George Miller, with different actors unconnected to any existing series was eventually dropped, but after the huge success of “The Avengers”, the timing is now right. Although Nolan and Bale had previously told the press “The Dark Knight Rises” would be their last Batman, Bale has recently stated he would consider a fourth movie if the right story was in place. So, could The Justice League be that story? With that cast and creative team it’s almost guaranteed to be a huge hit and a damn good movie and will certainly give The Avengers a run for their money, early reports on “Man of Steel” have been very positive so maybe there’ll be an official announcement after that movie hits the big screen in June.... I for one hope so!!
James Herbert dies aged 69 GiRLS ALouD SPLiT-AGAin!!
Being the son of a book dealer, i was raised to read all sorts of books and one of my favourite writers as a teenager with an appetite for gore was James Herbert. At the time my dad managed an antiquarian bookshop in Leicester that bought second-hand books and sometimes he would bring me home a pile of paperbacks to sort through. One day, whilst sifting through I came across a thick black book with the word James HerbertThe Rats and an illustration of a terrifying bloody mouthed rat, I began reading immediately!! Born in 1943, James J o h n
Herbert, OBE, was an art director at an advertising agency before he turned full time writer and designed his book covers - including that nasty rat! The Rats was his first novel, about giant mutant maneating rats in urban London, it spawned 2 book sequels, Lair and Domain as well as a graphic novel, The City, set in a postapocalyptic future. His work was diverse but often had a horror theme leading him to be referred to as “the British Stephen King”. One of his best loved books however moved away from the horror genre, Fluke is the
charming story of a dog that somehow remembers his previous life as a human; it’s a lovely book that I recommend for anyone with a less strong stomach! Several of his books have been adapted, but none of the films were well received. They include Fluke and The Rats, which was filmed as Deadly Eyes and featured Daschunds in rat costumes! Other adaptations include movie versions of Survivor and Haunted and a critically acclaimed 3 part BBC adaptation of The Secret of Crickley Hall which aired last year in November/December. In an interview last year Herbert said: “I hate violence and I didn’t plan to write horror; it just poured out of me. The great thing is that you can write humour, romance or political thrillers under that genre.” Herbert passed away at his home in Sussex on 20th March; I’d like to personally thank him for some epic teenage nightmares.... Thank you James.

is it just me or have girls Aloud had more splits than a louis spence interview?
The 5 piece reformed after 3 years of working on solo projects for a 12 date tour but ticket sales were pretty underwhelming, and after their last date of the tour in Liverpool, the girls announced on their official twitter account: “Dear Alouders, we just want to say from the bottom of our hearts Thank you!! “This tour has been an amazing experience and the perfect chance to say thank you for being on this journey with us through a decade. “It has far exceeded any of our dreams and we hope we are forever your inspiration and reminder that dreams really do glitter!! “Your love and support will stay with us forever but we have now come to the end of our incredible time together. Love you lots.”
Boyle back at BBC?
Controversial comedian Frankie Boyle may soon be returning to the BBC after 4 years away from the channel and a 3 year absence from mainstream tv altogether. Aunty Beeb’s new controller of comedy commissioning Shane Allen, who worked with Frankie at Channel 4 on the series “Tramadol Nights”, has indicated that he’d like to see the comedian get his own show saying; “I’m not going to suddenly stop admiring his unique comic talent because I’ve switched teams.”
Nadine Coyle later tweeted; “You should know by now I had no part in any of this split business. I couldn’t stop them. I had the best time & want to keep going. Xxxx” So that’s it Girls Alouders, at least until a couple of solo albums flop!!
Boyle’s time on 4 ended suddenly after he posted several jokes about Paralympic athletes on his Twitter page which, although it was on his personal Twitter account, outraged many people and led Channel 4, although never publicly condemning him, to not recommission his show and to quietly drop a new concept“Frankie Boyle’s Rehabilitation Programme”, a show for which he had already filmed a pilot. It’s this show that now may be coming to the BBC, described by Allen as “Wogan but with paedo jokes”, the show consists of Boyle in front of a live audience and invited guests, which should quickly become a live (and lively) debate as Frankie gives his uniquely offensive comedic views on various controversial subjects. Allen went on to compare
Boyle to the Scottish king of comedy; “For me, Frankie shares the same provocative, edgy comedy danger that Billy Connolly had early in his career and Billy is now hailed as a national treasure. I think TV can accommodate someone like Frankie now and it’s a shame we didn’t have more of Billy Connolly on telly in the 70s.” Personally I love Boyle’s “out there” brand of acerbic comedy, sure, it’s not for the easily offended and does he sometimes take a joke too far? Yes, but it’s just comedy, designed to get you to react, as a lot of funny men and women have done for generations. Of course we could allow censorship to completely control what we see and hear but where do you draw the line? I’ll be eagerly awaiting Frankie’s next project- and anyone who finds him offensive can always turn over!

A soHo-BAseD guest house has given a whole new meaning to midnight feasts by creating the world’s first edible hotel.
The first sweet-filled hotel opened its doors for one night only, and two lucky residents ate their way through vanilla sponge cushions, windows and walls clad with 2,000 macaroons, a rug made from 1,081 meringues and 20 kilos of marshmallows. A team of 14 cake makers took more than 2,000 hours to bake and 900 hours and used more than 600 kilos of sugar to make the cake hotel Sweet-toothed guests gorged their way through windowsills built entirely from fudge and bathed in a bath filled with caramel-coated popcorn; there were even edible books on the bedside table. Thousands of baked treats were available for the guests to nibble on and over 100 pieces of edible art on show across three floors and eight rooms. The hotel was the brainchild of Tate & Lyle Sugars, inspired by regions from around the world based on
the brands eight new Fairtrade sugars. Overseen by ‘Miss Cakehead’ with the help of 14 cake artists including The Meringue Girls and Cake For Breakfast, each room was themed by a different sugar. There was a Mediterranean-inspired bedroom, with edible furnishings, a caramel popcorn-filled bathtub, over 100 floating meringues and 10 metres of edible pearlescent bunting. A Pirates of the Caribbean room came with a giant treasure chest full of edible pearls, ginger spiced doubloons and cutlasses, and rum and raisin chocolate brownies and tea cakes. There was also a Britishinspired Golden syrup sugar room with a giant two metre long golden-syrup lion, treacle tarts in the shape of the British Isles and a giant tower of donuts, as well as a Mayan-inspired room hidden in the cellar featuring a Mayan fudge temple. Rainbow cake lovers would appreciate the Mississippi-inspired ‘Mardi Gras’ room, with a giant five foot long king cake and of course, plenty of Mississippi
mud pies. There was even a Barbados-inspired library with edible shells and hand-painted cookies, fruit cakes and florentine’s showcased as museum features inside vintage glass jars, all made from Barbados inspired Dark Muscovado sugar. A Guyanese-inspired room was complete with a giant two metre long sea turtle cake and even ‘turtle eggs’ made of chocolate cake and cheesecake baked inside duck eggs buried in mounds of Demerara sugar. James Whiteley, Tate & Lyle Sugars Senior Brand Manager said: ‘We think the cake hotel perfectly captures the excitement, inspiration and expertise behind the creation of our new range of golden and brown cane sugars. We hope that through the cake hotel we can showcase the versatility of golden and brown cane sugars and inspire people to get creative in the kitchen.’ One thing is for sure, the lucky guests almost certainly had sweet dreams last night, as long as they didn’t make themselves sick.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples
A Load Of Old Ed Careful Please In the last week, driving from north to south for work, I have witnessed three road accidents on the motorway.
Ed Balls, the labour shadow chancellor has asked the government to make a u-turn on their economic policy after spending the last three years criticizing them for making u-turns on other policies.
I’m tired of the schoolboy, childish tactics that we see in the houses of parliament. I wish that they would all unite behind the country for once and get things moving together. Our politicians make themselves look like spoilt children and the world must look at us and laugh. What a disgraceful state of affairs our parliament is, and that goes for all the parties!
Please be careful folks. The sight of someone being dragged from the wreckage of a car is not a pretty one and it will stick in my
Queen Size Part
Sometimes, I wish the Queen could take over and bang their heads together.
SORRY!
Just a few days ago, I took my mother to a “Hog Roast” at the English library in Puerto de la Cruz. The library organizes many events throughout the year and this one was certainly very well attended. Mum has been struggling to get about lately so I delivered her with wheelchair to the library. There was nowhere to park the car, so I just stopped in the driveway so that I could get her into the chair and wheel her to the table where my friends were sat.
Just as I got through the door, a car horn sounded of loudly and at least half a dozen times. I couldn’t believe the impatience and came out into the driveway, flustered and

I hear this week, that The Queen wasn´t actually asked to appear in the Olympic Bond spoof, but she volunteered to take part and even wrote her own lines. Good on Her Majesty for getting involved.

very angry. The lady at the wheel tried to talk to me, but I was ranting like a big kid. Just as I drove away, I realised what she had said to me. She wasn’t trying to get me to move at all. She was just delivering the roast pig to the venue for the dinner and wanted someone to come out and pick it up. The embarrassment I feel is total. It just goes to show
that we should always give people a chance to explain themselves before we get mad or even. So, to the lovely looking lady, who was just delivering the roast hog, that smelled so delicious, I would like to offer my sincere apologies. I hope that she forgives me. Mum said that the dinner was superb and everyone had a wonderful time.
ty stunt. A new reality show called “Wannabe a Spice Girl” is being put together and she has decided that she will never get on stage with the girls again. The problem is that the remaining spice girls are aged between 36 and 40 years, so I just know that they won’t want some leggy dolly bird in the Posh’s place. Maybe they should drop the reality show and plonk Ann Widdecombe in her place. She smiles a lot more than posh and she could become
“Scruffy Spice”. In fact, why not get rid of the lot of them and make Edwina Currie “Gobby Spice”, Su Pollard “Funny Spice”, Lorraine Kelly “Breakfast Spice” and Joanna Lumley “Lovely Spice”. The real deal here is that nobody cares about them anymore. They are old news. It was a money making machine that worked very well, for a very long time, but the till needs to stop dinging! For me, it’s all a load of “Old Spice”!
Posh Promise

memory for some time to come. I really admire the emergency services that have such a hard task putting us all back together again. If everyone just took a little more care and thought about what is going on around them, the roads would be a much safer place.
What A Gas
I was cooking on the gas stove, when the gas bottle ran out. It always happens when I want to bake something. I went to change the bottle and put a new one on. The gas still wouldn’t light. It was a brand new bottle, but no luck! We had another new bottle, so I put that one on instead .... Still no gas.
Frustrated, I left it till my partner got home
and went for my afternoon nap. When I woke up, I had a cold shower as that is also run by gas. Later on, I realised that I had tried to change the upstairs gas bottle, THREE TIMES and that the downstairs one was the one that was empty. I felt such an idiot, especially when my friend Tracy, who is staying at my house, posted on facebook ........ “Had a lovely hot shower tonight ... at last”. Needless to say, she isn’t coming back!

BuCkingHAm Palace, the empire state Building, the eiffel tower and the kremlin - along with a whole world full of other landmarks - went dark to draw attention to climate change.
More than 150 countries took part in Earth Hour, organised by the World Wildlife Fund. People across all continents switched off their lights for 60 minutes at 8.30pm local time on Saturday 23rd March In the UK, the palace was joined by Elizabeth Tower, home to Big Ben in the Palace of Westminster and the Southbank Centre on the banks of the River Thames. Other landmarks across the world joined in including, Gateway of India in Mumbai, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, Table Mountain in Cape Town, Times Square in New York, the Tower of Pisa and former Olympic stadium, the “Bird’s Nest” in China. gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard
Succulent Plants for the Tenerife Garden ings and adding their special charm to the city. The houseleeks all form rosettes of succulent leaves and produce flowering spikes carried above. Some of them have thick stems and may grow into branched shrubs but others remain more or less close to the ground. They have yellow, white or pink tiny starry flowers that are very attractive. Aeonium tabuliforme is a very curious plant that forms a rosette that lies flat on the rock service it is growing in. It is found on cliffs and rocky mountainsides in the northwest of Tenerife. In Spanish it is known as Pastel del Risco, which translated means “Cake of the Steep Rock”.
Bryophyllum Many people in the UK enjoy growing cacti and succulents as houseplants but here in Tenerife you can grow them outside in your garden or on a terrace and don’t need to worry about the temperature. Not only that but these plants are specially adapted to survive in hot and dry parts of the world so they will be OK if you go away for a few days or forget to water them.
Aloe Vera There are actually many species of succulent that grow wild in Tenerife and are native to the island, and because of their decorative value some of these are grown in gardens as well. The Canary Candle Shrub (Senecio kleinia) is one of the endemic plants that falls into this category. It develops into a large branching shrub with jointed succulent stems that only have leaves and flowers on them in winter and early spring. It is found growing
Kleinianerifolia wild in dry coastal areas and on waste ground but because of its ornamental value it is often grown in gardens too. The Aloe Vera is a large plant with rosettes of grey-green fleshy leaves that go a sort of pinkish-red in very dry conditions. This plant has tall flowering spikes that are produced in spring and that carry pretty yellow tubular flowers. Aloe Vera is well known for its use in cosmetics and in healthcare products so it is a useful species to grow as well, and the flowers are edible and delicious. Other species of Aloe are also commonly grown in flower and shrub borders. The Candelabra Aloe (Aloe arborescens) has reddish-orange flowers and forms large bushes or small trees that reach 6-9ft in height. Houseleeks in the Aeonium genus can be found in the wild and are cultivated in gardens. These plants get their name from their unusual habit of growing on the roofs of buildings and in cracks in walls. You will often see them in such places in towns and villages in the north of the island. La Laguna is a great place to spot houseleeks high above you on historic build-
The very large and varied Spurge family has many succulents in it and one of these is the Canary Spurge or Cardón (Euphorbia canariensis). With its thick and leafless fleshy stems that are edged with spines all along the four or five sides to them it looks more like a cactus but it is not one. This plant forms large clumps in semi-desert areas and on volcanic mountainsides and grows all over the island. It is very popular in gardens too, as is the even spinier Crown of Thorns (E. milii) which has succulent stems covered in sharp thorns and carries its leaves and flowers at the tops of these stems. It
Aeoniums on wall Aeonium
originally came from Madagascar. Both these plants bleed a toxic white milky juice if they are broken so care when handling is advisable and not just because of the spines. Two more succulents that are often seen growing in Tenerife are the Bryophyllum species daigremontianum and tubliflorum. They are also Madagascan plants and well-suited to growing on a hot subtropical island. Both Bryophyllums are often called Mother of Thousands because these plants produce hundreds of tiny plantlets along the edges of their leaves. These fall off and root easily wherever they fall. They grow to 3ft or more in height and the tubular flowers are a pinkish-
red and carried in drooping clusters on flower-stalks above the foliage of the plants. B. daigremontianum has succulent pointed leaves that have darker markings on the undersides and B. tubiflorum has long thin fleshy leaves. Both types are very easy to grow in pots or in flower borders and need very little in the way of care. They are poisonous plants and usually don’t even get attacked by any of the insect pests so prevalent on the island. So as you can see most succulents don’t need much attention and this means that they are ideal for gardeners who don’t have much time on their hands or are simply busy enjoying the island in other ways!
Botanist and author David Bramwell tells us in his book Medicinal Plants of the Canary Islands that Aloe Vera sap and gel has the following properties or uses: A remedy for burns, a sun screen, a strong laxative, for healing wounds, pain relief, skin care, and it is antiseptic and antiviral. It is also being studied as a treatment for cancer and AIDS.
Cardoncu
Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.
He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

Who Ate All The Pies, So Who Pays For The Flights?
By marc Craig ACCorDing to sky news this week, a suggested “pay as you weigh” airfare pricing system has been causing controversy. three proposals put forward by Dr. Bharat P. Bhatta all result in heavier passengers paying more for their tickets, (variations on the three proposals involve fixed base rates or an average fare price for an average weight person, with discounts or additional charges for over weight/under weight passengers). He argues; “Charging according to weight and space is a universally accepted principle, not only in transportation, but also in other services.”
The proposals have caused outrage..... Now, I might be getting myself into trouble here, but as the existing system factors in extra weight expenses into the price we all pay for tickets, here goes! I know it’s not always the person’s fault when they’re overweight - my mum has battled with her weight her whole life due to glandular problems and god knows no one is going to accuse me of being anorexic!!- but when a morbidly obese family from Fatsville, USA, whose idea of sustenance is inhaling buckets of fried chicken, decide
to waddle onto a flight just so they can go try some fried chicken from another country, I don’t want to pay for some of their ticket! When a person says their problem is “big bones”, to quote Ricky Gervais it’s often “big bones covered in meat and gravy”!! I’ve nothing but sympathy for people that struggle
with weight loss, as long as they’re actually trying to do something about it- maybe some clever scientist can devise some kind of “breathalyser” to calculate whether a bigger person should pay more? If your breath test gives the reading “Salad”- no extra charge, but you test positive for BBQ sauce - get your wallet out!!

Capricorn 22 December to 19 January
Take credit for a job well done on Monday. Don’t be afraid to promote yourself! A project will require some extra effort on Wednesday. Get ready to roll up your sleeves. You may experience fuzzy thinking on Friday. Try to separate fact from fiction in all circumstances. A loved one may attempt to influence your behavior when the Sun squares Pluto in Capricorn on Sunday. Let this person know that you’re capable of leading your own life.

Cheap, Hearty, Easy & Flavoursome (CHEF) This week I really want to share with you what you can do with this wonderful block of fresh yeast! (Levadura Fresca) It’s available in any Mercadona in the fridges near to the yoghurts, and it costs only 39cts. I’m going to give you a basic bread dough recipe that I always use, and then some things that you can do with it to create something different.
Basic Bread Recipe:
Now let’s get adventurous: Pizza
Roll out the dough; place it on a baking sheet or in a pizza tray and top with tomato puree, mozzarella and your favourite toppings. Why not make a square pizza and cut it into small bite size pieces for canapés?
Bread Pasties
(similar to a calzone pizza) I got this idea whilst on a long haul flight. Just before landing they gave out these “hot sandwiches” mine was filled with Arabic spiced minced lamb! Divide the dough into 3 or 4 pieces depending on how big you want your pasty’s to be. Shape them into a ball, and roll them out to about ½ cm thickness so it is sort of small pizza base. Fill one side with whatever your heart desires, here’s some examples: Bolognese & cheese Cheese and Ham
Ingredients:
500g white plain flour (I never use strong bread flour, the cheapest I have found is in Lidl 0.37cts) 25g fresh yeast (one half of the cube) 300ml Luke warm water ½ tsp. sugar ½ tsp. salt
Directions:
Crumble the yeast into a mixing bowl, and then add everything else (try and add the water last). Mix it altogether until you get a nice firm dough, and then give it a good knead for about 5 minutes. If you are lucky enough to have a food processor with a dough hook, this is a very easy and painless task, otherwise stick to the good old hand method. Once you have given it a good knead, stick it back Chopped tomatoes, onions, mixed peppers and Mozzarella Fold them in half and pinch them together, allow to rest in a warm place for 20 minutes then pop them into the oven until they sound hollow when you tap them! Why not cut square pieces of dough, put your filling on one piece and then seal it with the top piece?
Tear & Share Garlic Bread
Divide the dough into 6 balls, and roll them out with your hands into sausage shapes. Get a square cake tin, and plait 3 of them, layer one side of the cake tin with them, now do the same with the other 3, and layer the other side of the cake tin. Allow to rest for 20 minutes in a warm place. Before baking, make some garlic butter with some oregano in it. Gently melt it, but don’t allow it to get hot. Now brush it over the dough evenly and place it in the oven. Why not top it with some cheese half way through baking?
in its mixing bowl, or in a bread tin if you want to make a full bread loaf. Next wet a clean tea towel, and wring it out so it is still quite damp. Cover the bowl, and place it somewhere warm for an hour or so. My favourite place is on the balcony if the sun is shining, this works wonders. Allow it to double in size - then it’s up to you what to do with it! If you are just making a loaf, pop it on a medium shelf in a pre-heated oven at 170°c for approx. 20 minutes, gently tap it, and if it sounds hollow then it is cooked through! Bread rolls? – Divide the mixture into individual balls and allow it a little more rising time, bake in the oven at the same temperature, but for only 15 minutes.
Stromboli
Similar to the bread pasty’s. Roll out all the dough as if making a pizza. Top it with your favourite filling; now roll it up like a Swiss roll. Pop it on a baking sheet and allow it to rest for 20 minutes. Pop it in the oven for 20 minutes. There’s so much that you can do with this that you simply have to be adventurous. Let me know how you get on by contacting us at the Tenerife weekly; send us your photos and ideas. Another great idea, I published
this recipe a while back and I have been asked a couple of times for it to be reprinted, it only seems right that I should put it in with this publication as its main ingredient is yep, you got it – YEAST!
Crumpets:
Ingredients: 225g plain flour 1 level teaspoon salt 25g fresh yeast crumbled 1 level teaspoon caster sugar ½ pint (275 ml) milk Directions: Heat the milk and (55 ml) water together in a small saucepan till they are warm – NOT HOT. Then pour into
a jug, stir in the sugar and yeast and leave it in a warm place for 10-15 minutes till there is a good frothy head on it. Sift the flour and salt into a mixing bowl, make a well in the centre then, when the yeast mixture is frothy, pour it all in. Next use a wooden spoon and mix the flour into the liquid gradually and beat well at the end to make a perfectly smooth batter. Cover with a teatowel and leave to stand in a warm place for about 45 minutes. Then to cook the crumpets: grease the insides of egg rings well, and grease the frying pan. Arrange the rings in the frying pan or on an electric plancha, when it is hot, spoon 1 tablespoon of the crumpet batter into each ring. Let them cook for 4 or 5 minutes: first tiny bubbles will appear on the surface and then, suddenly, they will burst, leaving the traditional holes. Now take a large spoon and fork, lift off the rings and turn the crumpets over. Cook the crumpets on the second side for about 1 minute only. Re-grease and reheat the rings and pan before cooking the next batch of crumpets. Note if you don’t have egg rings, you can just pour the batter into the pan or onto the plancha to make Pickelets. Serve the crumpets while still warm, generously buttered. If you are making crumpets in advance, then reheat them by toasting lightly on both sides before serving.

‘i want my own home’
I’ve been renting from the council for 6 years now, ever since I moved out of home. All I want in life is my own home to look after but I don’t think I’ll ever get it. My boyfriend is useless and doesn’t work half the time. I do my best to get all the overtime my job will give me but it’s no use. Life is just never going to treat me right. Ariana
Good things come to those who wait Ariana. The current economic climate doesn’t exactly favour first time buyers but that’s not to say it’s impossible. As you obviously know, first and foremost, you do need a deposit. In that respect, it’s a long hard slog
of scrimping and saving but, ultimately it’s worth it. As for your boyfriend? It’s down to you to decide what to do isn’t it? But if you both have different hopes and dreams for the future, you may well need to rethink the relationship. Have you spoken to him properly about this? Maybe sitting down
one night and outlining what you’re trying to do will open his eyes to the fact that you seriously need his help. All you can do is try and I know that one of the hardest things in life is being true to yourself but that’s exactly what you need to do if you want to turn your dream into a reality.

‘Beauty school drop out’
I started a beauty therapy course last year after persuading my parents it was the right thing for me. The problem is that I hate it. I didn’t really think it through properly and now I really
regret paying the expensive fees. Should I tell my mum and dad that I’m going to leave or just do it before they try to persuade me otherwise? Bella
I’m sure you’re perfectly capable of coming to the decision that you’ve chosen the wrong path. Being a parent myself, I can tell you point blank that your mum and dad will (or should) support you in everything you do. Of course there may be some raised eyebrows when you break the news but, at the end of the day, your happiness is what matters. Sometimes in life, you’ve got to make a few mistakes before you get things right and choosing a career is notoriously difficult. Sit with your parents and break the news to them. Tell them how you feel and ask them to support you in your decision. The sooner you face this the better because the perfect career for is definitely out there even though it may take you a while to find it! It’s not the end of the world Bella and I don’t think anybody could call you a failure for doing right by yourself. Good luck.
‘schoolgirl crush’ ‘too old for bulimia’
I recently went to my daughter’s parents’ evening and met her teacher. He was absolutely gorgeous and I was sure he was flirting with me. It turns out that I was right as he’s since called and asked me out for a drink. I said yes but am regretting it. I’d love another chance for love but am I crossing a line that shouldn’t be crossed? Amanda
Personally, I don’t think this is a huge issue. You need to stop worrying yourself about it and go out for that drink. There really shouldn’t be any kind of clash whatsoever, 99.9% of teachers are perfectly capable of separating their professional and personal lives! You got two options really haven’t you? Either let this guy down gently because your
fears have got the better of you. Or, go out and see where the evening takes you! Would you rather live with the nagging doubts that you did the wrong thing? It’s hard enough to find a partner these days without having the added worry that you’re putting yourself under. You like this guy, he seems to like you, trust me, give him a chance.
Three years ago my husband left me and since then I’ve been suffering from bulimia. I live alone now so no one sees what I do and I can hide it at work quite easily. I know I’m damaging my
health but I can’t bear to be overweight otherwise I might never find another man. Denise
Denise, you’re at a low point right now. Splitting up
with your husband seems to have had a profound effect on you. You don’t mention whether or not you are seeing the doctor about your illness, if you’re not, that’s the first thing you need to do. The underlying cause of all of this is a complete lack of selfesteem and in an ideal world; you would be able to tackle that first. In this case, the risk to your health is just too great though. The truth is though that no man is going to want to date you if you are abusing your body in this way! What you need to do is focus on the bulimia and forget men altogether for the time being. Think about it? You’re risking your life here chasing something that really won’t solve any of your problems. Start concentrating on getting better and loving yourself a little more. I’ve always maintained that nobody but nobody should enter into a relationship until they are completely happy with their lives.

The Voice UK BBC 1 - 19:00 - 20:35 Last year’s hit entertainment series The Voice returns to BBC One and begins the search for the UK’s next exciting vocal talent. Unconcerned with appearance, the auditions are about one thing and one thing only: the voice. The series kicks off with a spectacular group performance by the four megastar Coaches Jessie J, will.i.am, Danny O’Donoghue and Sir Tom Jones, and the first of the Blind Auditions. The famous red chairs are back and turning as each coach carefully picks the voices he or she

wants to work with based solely on what they hear and their musical intuition – and with the chance to be personally mentored and taught by four music superstars, the artists will be hoping that at least one coach hits their famous button and turns their chair for them. Each coach must form a team of 12 artists, and they’ll use every trick, every name drop, every statistic to persuade the very best to join their team. Once each coach has a full team, they will advise and train them through the remaining stages until one Artist is named ‘The Voice UK’.

Easter Eggs Live Channel 4 - 20:00 - 21:00 Exotic creatures from across the animal kingdom will be hatching live in a hatchery rigged with cameras to celebrate one of nature’s most ingenious creations: the egg.
In this second live programme, Mark Evans will update viewers on the animals that have hatched overnight. Will the emu chicks be walking? Will the bearded dragons finally emerge from their shells? And will the praying mantises explode from their egg cases? Highly sensitive microphones will listen to sounds coming from bird eggs just before they

hatch. Meanwhile, for the first time on TV, highresolution scans will reveal metamorphosis from the inside as a butterfly emerges. Jimmy Doherty will explore the unwelcome eggs that are laid in our homes in a specially-built infestation experiment. Lucy Cooke will look at how Siamese fighting fish build bubble nests to protect their eggs. And, in another TV first, clown fish (immortalised in the film Finding Nemo) will be seen hatching on camera. Viewers can follow the progress of all these different creatures as they struggle to enter the world on 20 live streams available round the clock on channel4.com/eggs.

Scott and Bailey ITV 1 - 21:00 - 22:00 A few months into her marriage, Rachel (Suranne Jones) is already struggling with the relentless proximity of living with Sean (Sean Maguire). Knowing that she is the one at fault, she would rather try and keep out of the way than confront the problem. Cheerful and sexy as ever, Sean is happy to embrace every facet of his new wife, including the door-slamming grump who comes through the door at the end of the day. Delighted with being back in her daughter’s life, Rachel’s mum Sharon (Tracie Bennett) starts to display the sort of behaviour that reminds Rachel why she was right to have kept her at arm’s length all these years. Janet’s (Lesley Sharp) home life isn’t plain sailing either. Having acknowledged that their marriage really is over, she

and Ade (Tony Pitts) decide to put their house on the market, and stay living together until it sells. But even though Janet knows she doesn’t want Ade, she can’t help wanting a bit of what he’s got – a new love interest who’s putting a smile on his face. And the demands of her new role as ‘acting sergeant’ mean that juggling child-care has just got even harder. The story of the week starts very close to home for Janet, when a worried neighbour knocks on her door one night, concerned about the smell coming from a house down the road. What Janet discovers is the severed head of 75-year-old Eunice Bevan at the bottom of the stairs, her body at the top, and her bedridden husband Joe (George Costigan) upstairs, emaciated and barely able to speak.

EXPRESS BAR DELiVERiES CuP legends A 5 v 6 trap Door
With the match at a draw, Legend´s Graham lost to Trap Doors Jamie, in the decider, 5-6, Cup night! Los Cristianos´ closest derby and two teams of good friends went head to head. The home side´s Graham had a shaky start losing to Dave, but Paul W got the better of Micky. It was Even after two, but Marcus and Jamie took the next two singles off Mark and Simon, 1-3 to the Trappers. Jamie and Marcus made it 4 for the visitors over Paul S and Mark, but Graham and Simon stole the second double from Dave and Micky. Marcus had recovered from his kryptonite exposure and took the frame from Paul W, Trap Door 5-2 up! in the bag, surely, but don’t count your chickens! Paul S, Simon and Graham fought hard and overcame Micky, Jamie and Dave, 5-5. The decider was between Graham and ´about to be married in Las Vegas´,
Jamie. The future groom held his nerve when the black went down! 5-6 and the Trap Door reach the semis, as long as it’s not next week, as we will be in the Nevada Desert taking a gamble. Great night with old mates, it’s a pity there had to be a loser.
vivo 4 v 6 Hoops
An eagerly awaited match, with both sides heading their respective tables. It was the home side who drew first blood after John played what looked like a fairly good safety only for Valeri to show some real quality to clear up a very difficult table and leave John shell shocked. A 7 ball clearance, which set the tone for the match. Captain Chris then took the next frame to level. It was Carl “the king” up next to put Hoops in front, only for Victor (Vivo) to level matters, again with a 7 ball clearance. Two solid doubles from Hoops seemed to put them in a strong position going into the last singles, but
the home side had other ideas! John managed to snatch a defeat from the jaws of victory, then Chris fell to another smart clearance again from Victor. It was game on now at 4-4 and the home side looked like favourites going into the last two singles. However, Hoops never give up and “the king”, who had just flown 2000 miles that day to play after a back operation and arguably Hoops best player on the night, fired Hoops into the lead. It was set up for Chris W to complete a hard fought victory with a stunning black when snookered. This gave Hoops the match and their place in the semi- final draw. All games played in great spirits and Hoops want to send message to Jim who had to fly back to UK...you don’t need to hurry back!!! summerland elite 6 v 4 legendary Jokers target Bar 6 v 5 treasure island

it’s All over – Mancini Concedes
“it’s over, but this doesn’t change anything because we should do our best from now to the end.”
Roberto Mancini has conceded the Premier League title but says he will be at Manchester City next season to try and win it back. Champions City will go into Saturday’s home game with Newcastle 18 points behind Manchester United, if the leaders win at Sunderland in the day’s early game. Mancini insists City’s focus now should be holding off a challenge from London duo Chelsea and Tottenham for the runners-up spot. “Every top team, when you can’t win a title, you should try to play well, try to win all the games, and we have the FA Cup semifinal. We have Chelsea four points behind, Tottenham five points behind and we play another nine games. For this reason it’s important to keep working hard.” The future of Mancini and midfielder Yaya Toure continue to be questioned in the press, and newspaper reports on Thursday suggested the Italian has been earmarked as
the man to revive Monaco’s fortunes. Asked about the link, Mancini said: “Monaco is one of
the best teams in the French Second Division and they have a good manager. I’ll stay here for a long time - like Yaya!”
Long Career Predicted For Gerrard
“steven has confidence now that he can play at the highest level into his mid30s - that’s fantastic news for liverpool.” – glen Driscoll.
Liverpool are confident captain Steven Gerrard can continue playing at the highest level well into his mid-30s. The midfielder, who turns 33 in May, has played every minute of the Reds’ 30 Premier League matches this season, scoring eight goals. The club’s head of performance Glen Driscoll believes Gerrard and his team-mates are benefitting from a new training and recovery programme and paid credit to the attitude of the England skipper. “We had confidence that, if managed correctly, Steven would be able to achieve everything he has achieved this year,” Driscoll said. “Four or five years ago, people were saying it was very unlikely that Steven with his injury history - would ever achieve this, let alone reach the milestones he has
hit this year in terms of playing time at the age of 32. It’s a credit to Steven himself; his professionalism is second to none.” The club’s medical department underwent an overhaul when new manager Brendan Rodgers took over in the summer and Driscoll thinks those changes are now making a significant difference. “We have around 90% availability rate this year with in-
juries, which is really good,” he told the club’s official website. “We’ve hit all the targets that we wanted to from a medical science perspective. “We’ve looked very fit and we’re pleased that we’ve made them fit for purpose. “Naturally, if you’ve got most of your players available, it’s clearly going to improve the probability of winning games.”

The Jockey Club have revealed their plans for a £45 million development at Cheltenham. Subject to planning permission, the proposed development will create a state-of-the-art new grandstand in place of the circa 1920s ‘A&R’ block that currently contains private boxes, which will include new annual members’ facilities, general public viewing areas, private boxes and Royal Box facilities.
The Jockey Club investment will include improved facilities for owners and trainers, and focus on en-
hancing the overall customer experience at the racecourse, including elevated walkways to ease mobility and multi-tiered viewing of the parade ring. If planning permission for the proposed development at Cheltenham is achieved in time and the necessary financing is in place, the main development will begin immediately after the 2014 Festival with a scheduled completion date ahead of the 2016 Festival. During the construction period, Cheltenham would be able to continue staging its race programme as normal. The concept of the proposed Cheltenham development project was showcased to officers from Cheltenham Borough Council, in advance of a detailed planning ap-
plication being submitted in April 2013. From 5 April 2013, an exhibition giving interested parties the opportunity to give feedback on the project will take place in Cheltenham as follows: in the Regent Arcade in Cheltenham Town Centre on 5 and 6 April from 11am until 5pm and at Cheltenham Racecourse on 9 and 10 April between 1pm and 7pm. Paul Fisher, Group Managing Director of Jockey Club Racecourses, said: “Cheltenham Racecourse is not only one of The Jockey Club’s crown jewels, we recognise it is the home of Jump racing and one of the great theatres in British sport. It is vital we continue to invest in its appeal, the experience it offers and its success, for the good of British racing.”
Ryder “Critical” After Attack
New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder, 28, is reported to be in critical condition in a Christchurch hospital after being attacked in the city on Wednesday. The reports suggest the hard-hitting batsman is being treated for a fractured skull, a punctured lung and internal bleeding after being set upon by multiple people.
Ryder was in Christchurch playing for the Wellington Firebirds and he had been dismissed for a duck earlier in the day in their 61-run Ford Trophy semi-final defeat at the hands of the Wizards. He was due to head off to the Indian Premier League soon with the Delhi Daredevils having recently spent NZ$307,000 in their player auction to sign him for the 2013 edition. The player is in a self-imposed exile from international cricket and has not featured for the Black Caps since February 2012, missing the entirety of the recent series with England. A statement on the New Zealand Police website read: “Police are investigating an incident at a bar in Merivale in the early hours of this morning. Police can confirm the incident did involve Jesse Ryder and that he is currently in Christchurch Hospital.” Detective senior sergeant Brian Archer ex-
plained Ryder was involved in a brief altercation “two or three” people when he left the bar but was then attacked by one of the individuals after he crossed the road to a nearby fast-food outlet. The hospital advised us he is in a critical condition. He is in an induced coma as a result of suffering multiple injuries,” Archer added. A tweet on the New Zealand Cricket Twitter feed read: “The whole NZC team’s thoughts are with @DijaRyder this morning.”

Three Wins on The Bounce For CD Marino Winning is a good habit to get and it’s brought a new lease of life to CD marino. At home to real Aviles they were comfortable 2-1 winners after starting with an unchanged line up for the first time since coach Almeida arrived in December. The new found confidence is clear to see, Aviles were ripe for the taking and Marino dived into their task with enthusiasm. Chema and Sandro had plenty of pace to unsettle the visitors and after seven minutes a Sandro chance was only half cleared leaving Iker a clear path to fire the
ball into the net from just outside the box. Captain Airam made the team tick from midfield and Balduino was inspired up front and full of running. Aviles had let in three goals the previous week at home to CD Tenerife and their southern rivals looked capable of matching that punishment. Sandro was at his wing swapping best and with Balduino powering through the middle Marino made plenty of chances. Airam shot wide on the half hour and Balduino scuffed the ball with just the keeper to beat and was soon back for another try before the Aviles defenders made

Former CD marino right winger Alejandro Peraza could be taking on another relegation battle, but this time in kent. the 24 year old is talking to ebbsfleet united of the Blue square Premier division about a move to the senior level of english non league football.
Originally from Gran Canaria he started this season with the Las Americas club before moving on to Santa Brigida of the Tercera division in January. Ebbsfleet (formerly Gravesend and Northfleet) have recently signed another Gran Canarian player Ubay Luzardo. Manager Liam Daish used to play for Birmingham City and Coventry City and needs new recruits to help his side to avoid the drop.

on the roof of the net, just a short respite as Marino carved them open with some skilful play. Chema saw an
opening and chipped the ball over the defence to Balduino, he laid the ball off to Sandro for an easy tap in and a 2-0 lead. Sandro had to suffer plenty of crunching tackles especially from Salva as the visitors play became increasingly desperate. Against the run of play Aviles found a way through for a shot at goal but home goalie Alberto pulled down Geni for a penalty that he got up and converted. The sparkle was still in Marino’s play, Balduino and Sandro tried their double act again but this time it ended with Balduino shooting wide. The big striker tried to make amends by beating two defenders on the right before
unloading his shot too near to the goalie. Airam juggled the ball as he closed in to tee up a strike but was closed down by Rebollo between the sticks. Aviles paid the price for their wild tackles as Jeffrey got sent off after a second booking that took the sting out of any possible revival and Marino were the more threatening in the four minutes of injury time. The fresh legs of Raul Barcos and Ramses kept the away defence busy and another victory was secured. This Sunday’s away game at Rayo Vallecano B will be a much sterner test of the revival, only a win will do if any faint hopes of escaping relegation are to linger.

Steady As She Goes For CD Tenerife CD Tenerife v Getafe B (home game)
Jesus Alvaro Going into two away games following two successive defeats the trap was set for CD Tenerife but a 0-0 draw at Getafe B made it a four point haul with no goals con-
ceded. You won’t catch the loyal fans counting chickens, even at Easter, but these games showed the character and depth of the promotion chasing squad.
Ayoze and Alberto, the bright lights from the B team shone again at Getafe, not normally a happy hunting ground for CD Tenerife. Aridane was slow to capitalize on a pass from Ayoze after nine minutes and later in the first half the young supplier could have done better with a rushed strike that rose too high as it approached the goal. Lopez gave Tenerife a scare with his well flighted cross winging in towards the goal mid way through the half. Alberto had a narrow
squeak when he fouled Postigo and got booked, the home team and fans were baying for a sending off but the ref decided that the Getafe player didn’t have a clear goal scoring opportunity. It was all pretty even; Tenerife lost left back cover Jesus Alvaro with a muscle tear in his right leg that will sideline him for around five weeks. Yeray traded places with him and the back four shuffled positions, up front Loro was having a quiet game, and maybe replacing
him with Guillem Marti could provide a winning spark. The sub had the best chance of the game taking a pass from Ayoze and running between two defenders but he over cooked it and ran the ball straight into the goalkeeper. This Sunday its back to Santa Cruz for the visit of Coruxo at noon with just eight regular games left to keep or extend the five point lead at the top and earn the fast track play off route of a home and away showdown.
Onward And Upward Horses For Courses For CB Canarias In Buzanada
It’s all good news from CB Canarias basketball team, the wins keep coming and having secured their place in the ACB for another season they are setting their sights on the championship play offs.
The latest team to fall at their La Laguna stadium was Joventut Badalona 71-68 in front of 4,203 very happy fans. Badalona had the outstanding player on the day as Corey Fisher racked up 28 points but his one man drive was no match for the all round supremacy of the home team. A storming third quarter, 24-14, put CB Canarias on track to victory but they had to dig in late on after giving away four fouls in the dying minutes. Ricardo Uriz led the scoring with nine points and was ably supported by Saul Blanco with eight and Levi Rost with seven. Now sitting in 12th spot, the yellows can make a bid
Fans of show jumping are sure to enjoy the “Concurso Nacional de Salto de Obstaculos Arona” on Easter Saturday and Sunday at Central Hipico Del Sur in Buzanada just a few miles inland from Los Cristianos. The long established riding center holds regular competitions and entrance is free.
Jumps gradually grow higher over the course of each day. From 11 am to 2 pm the bar is set at .75 meters, then .90m, then one meter and 1.10m. In the afternoon session from 3 pm to 7pm the target is 1.20m rising to 1.30m. If you are driving up take the exit 25 on the TF1 motorway or look for the signs to Buzanada.
for the top eight and take part in the end of season play off climax. Coach Alejandro Martinez has signed a contract extension keeping him in control for next
season and the club is already looking at players to strengthen the squad. A win at Lagun Aro this Saturday at 6pm would keep the momentum going.
