Well, it appears to be that time of year again. Vivo Decades gets taken over, quite literally, by the Soul In The Sun Crew. This means everyone at Tenerife Weekly gets to take a very well earned holiday. With this in mind, we have printed a two week TV guide, so you don’t miss out on anything! I am off to play in mainland Spain where I have family, so I am very much looking forward to my holiday!
Tenerife Weekly - 18th October 2013 - 7th November 2013 Of course this take over means that Vivo will not be hosting any of their Bitter & Twisted shows, the last show is on Monday 28th of October. The entertainment team will also be taking a long, equally well deserved holiday, but not to worry, everyone will be back bright eyed and bushy tailed for the return, by popular demand, of our Titanic Epic Show on Wednesday 13th November, remember to book as tickets always sell out for this huge event, the ticket box will be open as usual at Vivo, or you can

If you would like to join in the Soul In The Sun party, then pop down to Vivo and there may well be a few passes still available, it is a brilliant party for people who enjoy Northern Soul music, and they have been coming to Vivo for years, so the team must be doing something right.
In the meantime, I bid you au revoir – try not to miss us too much!!

€30m theme park in the pipeline for Güímar
janetanscombe.com The Hemi Investment Group has presented a 30m Euro project for a theme park in a former quarry in Güímar. The new Mimiland Park will be a development of some 200,000 square metres and will provide employment for some 2,000 people: according to agreements reached with Güímar, these employees will be from the municipality itself.
The Adeje Tenerife Tigers, the only cheerleading squad in the Canary Islands, won 12 trophies in the 1º España Cheerleading and Dance competition held in Madrid on October 12th.
The event, which included the presence of movie star and politician Arnold Schwarzenegger, saw teams from all over Spain in attendance, and the Tenerife Tigers took eight first places and four second places – they were entered in 12 categories overall. The Tenerife Tigers took first place in Youth Stunt Level 2 Routine, Youth Lyrical Jazz, Youth Cheer Routine, Junior Pom Duet, Junior Level 1 Stunt, Senior Level 3 Stunt, Junior Lyrical Jazz, Senior Pom Routine. Their second place cups were for
Junior Cheer Routine, Senior Pom Duo, Senior Level 2 Stunt, Junior Jazz Duo. On October 13th all participants were invited back to the venue for additional training from top stunt coaches from both Germany and USA. The troupe, whose base is in the Let’s Dance/Vamos a Bailar school in Callao Salvaje, is made up of children and teenagers from South Tenerife, and in the weeks before the competition they dedicated hours daily to perfecting their routines after school. Some of the children’s parents accompanied them to Madrid for the event, with the school’s owner Amanda Lambert leading the winning team. Of her winning team Amanda said “I could not be more proud of all the children, not only for their performances on the day but for their behaviour, profes-
sionalism, attitude to other team players and team work! They are all a very hard working bunch who work as a team and work hard for us.” The Competition Team were coached by Amanda, Zoe Mae Harker and helped out by Tez Shackleton, the team’s BCA Coach and mentor who travelled from the UK to support Amanda and Zoe and the athletes as well meeting with the tournament director and his team of España Cheer & Dance, Fredy Bedoya. For those who did not attend the Madrid competition this time, there will be plenty of other opportunities as the Tenerife Tigers Team Leaders are now looking at the possibility of the “Hearts of England” in Loughborough next February, as well as many other events here in Tenerife. Watch this space!
The park will include over 25 attractions, including a shopping mall, an auditorium for events and performances, a 5* hotel, and a mirador – a lookout tower set to become the highest in Europe. The president of the Hemi Group, Andrés Alonso, said that all the paperwork had been submitted to the Ayuntamiento and they were now waiting for the procedural change of land designation. Sr. Alonso indicated that a considerable number of obstacles had been
presented both by the council and the Canarian Government, but that he was hopeful of getting approval to proceed in the next few months. He suggested that if agreement was not in place by mid-2014 the investment could be withdrawn. Güímar mayor Carmen Luis Castro dismissed the possibility of problems, however, and said that the Mimiland project would not only regenerate an area of illegal quarrying but also represent the economic regeneration of the town.
Vivo Tea Dance
Vivo will be holding their second Tea Dance of the season on Wednesday 23rd October. This time, however, there is a twist! Professional dance teacher Beverley is offering 30 minutes tuition from 1pm, so you can brush up your dance steps before the start, at 1.30pm. The organisers, Beverley and Carole were delighted to see some new faces last time, and look forward to seeing some more, as
well as the regulars. Entrance costs just 5,00 Euros which includes refreshments and profits are shared between the Swallows official charity, Cancer Research and the Liv-
ing Room, which offers support to local workers. Numbers are limited, so please call Carole to book your place on 669 152 742 See you there

The Draconids were quite successful this year, but the next meteor shower, the Orionids, is unlikely to be much more of a spectacle. Despite occasionally offering a really spectacular meteor – sometimes bright fireballs – 2013’s show will be limited because of a bright three-quarter moon at peak hours between midnight and dawn. Even so, Orion is so recognizable that it’s worth a look out between 19 and 23 October. Before the famous Leonids again on 16-17 November, there will two further meteor showers, the South and North Taurids on 4-5 and 11-12 November respectively. The South Taurids will benefit from a dark moonless sky, but the North Taurids will suffer, like the Orionids, from a three-quarter moon. This moon will be full by the time of the Leonids, and three-quarters again by the time of December 13-14’s Geminids, leaving the South Taurids the best viewing for meteors in what’s left of 2013. A 73-year-old man was hospitalised after he accidentally fell from the first floor in a building in Avenida Reyes Católicos in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, about half past nine on Monday morning. Emergency services reported that the man had a broken ankle and trauma to his back. He was taken by ambulance to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, where he was admitted. His condition is said to be satisfactory. A 54-year-old man was seriously injured this morning after the car he was traveling in rolled over The accident took place around just after midnight on the TF-643 road from El Medano to Los Abrigos, near La Mareta, in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona. Firemen had to cut the trapped man out of his car before he could be taken by ambulance Hospitén Sur Arona Ayuntamiento’s website now has a dogs to rehome page ... as far as I can see they’re Aktiontier dogs, which is, I understand, the official refuge for the municipality. The offender was spotted by La Laguna Local Police in Taco last September, when they were called by several bystanders because there was a car blocking the pavement. Coincidentally, one of the officers who had been trained in recognising forgeries observed irregularities in the size of the document, as well as an out dated design format corresponding to earlier issues. Municipal libraries in Santiago del Teide are joining the campaign to collect non-perishable foodstuffs for local food banks, organized by the Professional Platform of Libraries in Tenerife (PROBIT). The drive is organized around the International Day of the Library which is commemorated on the 24th October. During the week of 21 to 26 October anyone who wants to make donations can do so in the Public Library at Puerto de Santiago, from 14:00 to 20:00 hours and at the Public Library in ElValle, from 15:00 to 17:00 hours. Echoes Of The 80’s - Dig out your white head band, shoulder pads, and air guitar and take the Walk Of Life down to Los Cristianos on Saturday 9th November to see a Dire Straits tribute band at the Auditorio Infanta Leonor. The show starts at 9pm and all tickets are 10 euros, the hall seats 800 people but you need to get tickets in advance from the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre or the Auditorio Café, they are either side of the rather impressive modern Auditorio. All together now, let’s sing one of those jolly songs about selling microwave ovens and colour TVs.

recognition for Local Bank manager
newsinthesun.com lOCAl Santander bank manager, Jesús ferrer Suárez, has been awarded a prestigious Gánigos prize for his work in the promotion of his home municipality of Santiago del Teide.
Ouside of his professional duties, Jesús, an accomplished photographer, is the president and founder of the municipal tennis team, has been involved with the Los Gigantes Carnival for many years and has taken part in the procession of the Three Kings of the Orient since 1988. The Gánigos awards are intended to distinguish and recognise the work of individuals and institutions in the field of tourism in the southern municipalities ranging from Santiago del Teide to Arico . Born in Tamaimo and based in Los Gigantes, Ferrer spoke to reporters at a ceremony held at the Hotel Be Live in Playa La Arena: “I’m very pleased to have been given the award, I guess it’s for the 27 years I have been working to promote tourism in Los Gigantes, in the bank 70% of my clients are foreigners, both residents and visitors to the town who come two or three times a year. “I spent 5 years helping to organise the carnival, 13 years as president and founder of the tennis team, and of course my regular stint as Wise Man Melchior. Lately I have become involved in the world of photography, disseminating images of the best that Santiago del Teide has to offer, but in truth I was surprised to have been nominated for the award”. When asked about how he sees Los Gigantes and Playa Arena as tourist areas, Jesús told the Diario de Avisos newspaper that he though Los Gigantes was “Good, bad and average” “Good, because there is a decent occupation rate, bad, because the quality has dropped considerably since the eighties and average, because we are not improving conditions in the area. “Los Gigantes urgently needs a proper car park, it’s been needed for 20 years already, we could do with more hotels but there isn’t the space, the only option I see for the future in Los Gi-
gantes is to leverage existing tourism in Tenerife and get them to come to visit and eat in Los Gigantes. “I will say that Playa Arena is great, excellent parking, but unless there are more attractions, theme parks, golf courses, etc.; let’s face it, sun and sea are just not enough anymore, then it will eventually just become a thoroughfare. Fortunately we do have the marina at Los Gigantes in the municipality, which gives some life to the area; we just have to work on getting out the tourists out of their hotels”. Questioned about going up to receive the award itself, Ferrer said, “Well knowing me I’ll be nervous and proud at the same time, I never thought when I started helping out in the community they were going to reward me for it. I’m sure it will remind me of the looks on the faces of the thousands of children in Santiago del Teide when “Wise Man Melchior” gave them their gift”.

Welcome...to my Monasterio
I
f, like me, you were one of the 25 people who bought 80’s pop/soul artist Terence Trent D’arby’s weird 2nd album titled “Neither Fish Nor Flesh”, you may recognise this article’s title as the spoken intro at the beginning of the first track! For me however, the phrase has now become what I will be saying every time I take friends and family to my new favourite place to eat! To call Meson El Monasterio just a restaurant is understating the magnificence of the place right away. Situated behind the El Trompo shopping centre in Orotava, it takes a little over an hour to get there from where we live in Palm Mar. Simply jump on the TF1, all the way up to the turn off for La Laguna and the North Airport, where we took exit 6, joining the TF2, keeping in the left lane and following signs for Puerto de la Cruz, we joined the TF5. Almost 30km later, take exit 36 for Los Realejos, 3rd exit at the roundabout,1st exit at the next roundabout, it’s a slight left onto Camino Piedra Blanca, then a slight right onto Calle Los Afligidos and you can’t miss it on your right. As you turn into the venue it’s hard not to be impressed, we drove through the main gates and continued all the way up to the highest restaurant of the four eateries contained within the monastery walls, El Mirador. The view from the dining area is quite simply stunning, overlooking the valley of La Orotava and the barrancos of La Esperanza forest day or night it’s just breath-taking. Unfortunately, on a Tuesday this restaurant is closed, so although we could enjoy the view, we wouldn’t be eating here. We continued past the restaurant and at the end of the car park, there was a footpath to the top of the hill, which the sign told us was roughly a 30 minute walk to the top of the hill and a small chapel with even better views. A few minutes up the footpath is a gate to the left which leads to an elaborate water flow system and the grounds and gardens, including an enclosure containing ducks, geese, chickens, roosters and peacocks. It wasn’t clear whether the ducks and chickens were intended as pets and as an attraction for visitors-or if they eventually

made it to the dinner table!! Anyway, as well as the ones in the enclosure many other birds roamed around the restaurants freely-much to the delight of several visiting children -and my animal loving wife!! As you can gather from its name Meson El Monasterio was originally, in the 18th century, a sacred monastery and home to many monks. It became an eating establishment in the 80’s and has thrived under the management of the Columbus Company. As well as specialising in Spanish cuisine, delights such as roast duck, suckling pig, and international dishes like stroganoff, seafood and various types of fondue are all here to tempt you! The main restaurant, El Comedor Principal, has several sections, the confessionary, cave room, bodega and two terraces with an open style kitchen and display cabinets where you can see the meats, fresh and cured, and watch the experts cooking your meals. As well as preparing beautiful dinners, the complex is open for champagne breakfasts at the mirador, lunches and it is a popular wedding venue too! After browsing the menus at all the restaurants the
choice is fantastic, we opted to eat at San Pedro, the front restaurant at the bottom,
which specialises in meat and seafood which you cook yourself on a hot stone.
Once we ordered, our waitress brought out a basket of piping hot homemade bread
and herb butter which was amazing and can be bought to take home with you. We were all provided with large bibs, meaning we could eat as messily as we liked without fear of staining our clothes!! After delicious starters of prawns in garlic and fried Camembert, (very generous servings), our hot stones were brought out with our sizzling main courses giving off the most mouth watering aromas!! Three of us ordered the mixed meat hot stone entrecôte, solomillo and pork fillet. My prawn loving mother-in-law ordered King Prawns on a hot stone and they were some of the biggest monsters I’ve ever seen!! It all came with papas arrugadas (wrinkly potatoes) and a large selection of sauces. The whole meal was amazing, I really can’t fault any of it and considering the beautiful surroundings, the price was surprisingly reasonable. We paid the bill and had one more quick stroll past the nativity scene and the tree lined path lit up with hundreds of fairy lights, then our taxi arrived to take us, completely satisfied, back to our hotel. Day or night El Monasterio is a great place to visit-so much more than just a restaurant, give it a try it’s far more satisfying than listening to Terry’s long forgotten dodgy 2nd album!!!
German and British media get to know Tenerife cuisine A dozen members of the British and German media were recently in Tenerife in order to get to know the main tourist attractions of the island which related to gastronomy. The visit of both groups was organized by the Iberostar hotel chain, with the collaboration of Tenerife tourism. The Cabildo’s President, Carlos Alonso, explains that the cuisine of Tenerife - not only dishes prepared with fresh products, but also the wines of the island “are increasingly valued by tourists, and affect that character that we want to convey in our markets”. The programme of the visit included cooking classes at the hotel Iberostar Mencey and visits to Bodegas Monje, as well as some other areas of the island, among them El Teide, La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna and Santa Cruz.
President Carlos Alonso emphasized that “with these activities we showed participants by using food and wine, the natural and traditional face of Tenerife, which complements the good climate”. Attending journalists will use this information in their re-
spective countries in published articles and reports published. The U.K. and Germany occupy the first and third position, respectively, among the most important tourist markets for Tenerife, which received nearly 1,600,000 British travellers and 570,000 Germans in 2012.

www.tenerife-weekly.com The Canarian Foundation for Mental Health En Pie (Make a stand) hosted their hiking and kayaking event last Saturday 12th October in the sunny setting of Los Gigantes.
The hikers set out in the morning to the village of Masca, nestled in the mountains of Santiago Del Teide all decked out with some stylish black t-shirts with they’re slogan “Locos por la Vida” (Crazy about life) provided for generously by Silverpoint Tenerife. The downhill hike through the dramatic scenery of one of the world’s highest canyons lasted about 3 hours after which the group had a well-deserved swim and rest, a speedboat then brought those joining the second leg to Masca beach including 2 of the German Paralympic team who had been invited over by the only Hotel especially adapted for those with physical disabilities, Mar y Sol, for the event. They then set off together for the 1 1/2 hour trip in kayak along the towering cliffs. The two local adventure sports companies providing the kayaks, expertise and plenty of fun for the occasion were Salitre and El Cardon who both offer a wide variety of activities on the island all year round. On their arrival at the port and after refreshments, the party walked over to the special area set up on the other side of the port with marquees, seats, plenty of cold beers donated by dorada, and some pumping tunes by DJ Aidy Evans who got the crowd going and played an assortment of songs to
Funneling down the Masca ravine and skimming over the sea to Los Gigantes the Fundación En Pié party sent out a bold positive message for the many sufferers of mental illness in Tenerife. The foundation name means make a stand and that is what they have strived to do in the face of stigma and prejudice.
The evening before we set out on the adventure co founder Carlos shocked me with the scale of the illness. “There are around 10,000 people affected by mental health issues in Tenerife alone, many of them with

Then the time arrived for the parapenting display, as the boys, Yeray Gonzalez and David Garcia, set off from the cliffs passing very close to the rocks, they gathered momentum and veered towards the port with orange smoke trailing from each of them across the sky and began an acrobatic exhibition full of synchronized infinites (360

The foundation is only twoyears-old but has a team of 30 including seven psychologists and four psychiatrists and we are about to open a drop in centre in Santa Cruz for three hours a day.” The big day started with just over 40 of us being ferried up to Masca village, all as bright and vibrant as the morning. The descent was hard but we had determination and a good team spirit and were soon deep in the shady depths of the track. groups. We grabbed a quick food break in an opening but kept up a good pace and were rewarded with the parting of the rocks to reveal the beach after just two and a half hours. A quick cooling dip in the sea and we were ready for the kayaks. Some bowed out at this stage and took the launch to Los Gigantes but others joined our party for the sea leg, among them Gerda and Irmi our German former paralympic ladies. Jumping off the mooring rock we eased on board, mine was more of an undignified scramble, they were mainly two seater kayaks, although a few of us had solo rides, I swapped half way to a two seater. With expert advice and shepherding we

A huge and delicious paella, provided by the Santiago Del Teide Council (among many other things) was wheeled out and served to the hungry crowd who then enjoyed a raffle with many great prizes donated such as a weekend in el poblado marinero by the very helpful Gail.
As the sun set on this wonderful scene, the contented crowd of young, not so young, professionals, students, locals, foreigners, individuals with and without mental and physical disabilities, all enjoyed good music, flowing beers and conversation and all collaborating in the cause of taking a stand for mental health. And who said charity isn’t fun?

set off in convoy, some had previous experience but even novices like me soon found a rhythm. There was good natured rivalry and the odd little shunt as we jostled for positions as we made good progress. Los Gigantes marina was a welcome sight around 90 minutes later as we moored up and enjoyed cold drinks. Music, more cold beer, and even a display of
paragliding off the cliffs ensured we had a good party out by the harbour wall as our muscles took a breather. It was a good day with 585.63 euros raised and just as important more publicity shone onto this worthy cause. You can find more information at www.enpie.org and plans are already in hand to stage a similar event next year. THANK YOU to all the people who helped to make the day such a success. peaking of ghosts could just be a way to catch the reader’s attention however, “There’s no such thing as ghosts…..” Well that’s what some folk say and while people may be reluctant to say they have seen a spectre in case they are thought to be losing their mind I suspected Tenerife is no different to anywhere else, although for some reason nobody here talks about ghosts – well they didn’t until Marc Craig came along with his articles in Tenerife Weekly which got us all thinking there could be a lot more to it than we originally thought. Although there isn’t much detail the most famous ghost on the island is Catherine Lercaro who is said to haunt the Museum of History and Anthropology of Tenerife. Casa Lercaro was once a fine mansion built in 1593 by Francisco Lercaro de León, Lieutenant General of Tenerife. Over the centuries the house was expanded and put to various uses. In the 1940s it was used by the military, it then became part of the University of La Laguna housing the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters and in the 1970s it was acquired by the Council who carried out much needed restoration. In 1993 the house became the

museum and still retains the coat of arms of the original owner and in the courtyard there is a well that has been capped. The story I want to tell though dates back to the 16th century when the wealthy Genoese merchants family named Lercaro, settled in Tenerife after the Spanish conquest. Catalina or Catherine as we know her in English was the daughter of the much respected Antonio Lercaro. In those days’ people hardly ever married because they were in love. Marriages were generally orchestrated for gain or some sort of strategic purpose. Catherine’s marriage was a case in point. Her father had arranged for her to marry an elderly man who enjoyed a good position in La Laguna and was also very wealthy. Desperately unhappy at being forced into this marriage of convenience Catherine felt that there was no way out. On the day of her wedding she chose to end her life by throwing herself into the well in the mansion grounds. Following the shame of the non-wedding, Catherine’s subsequent suicide and the church’s refusal to let her have a Christian burial in consecrated ground the story goes that her family hid her remains in the house, boarded up the well and moved to La Orotava. The city of La Laguna is
characterised for its stories and legends so naturally it is thought that Catherine’s spirit still haunts the museum. Many people claim to have seen her and heard mysterious footsteps walking through the halls of the museum. The sound of footsteps is said to always take place at the top of the
house, between Section VI in the museum to where there is a cabinet that houses an image of Christ. It would appear things always happen when someone new starts work at the museum. Now whether this is employees playing tricks or the tormented soul of Catherine it is hard to say,
but if not the former then what is the explanation for a museum worker who left a glass on one of the tables, when she returned the glass was broken into pieces. Or the ghostly form of a young woman that many say appears like a white cloud then fades away. Or the experience of workmen in the
museum who swear to have seen a girl watching them yet they were alone since the museum was closed to the public. If there are such things as ghosts, and I really don’t know, it would be nice to think that one day Catherine’s troubled spirit can be laid to rest.

The incentives should result in a 2% increase in air traffic for 2014; some 4 million passengers. The measure, which was included as an amendment to the State Budget (PGE), will allow for a 100% discount on passenger airport charges on new routes opened by any company, both domestic and international. against fiscal fraud – government Says its Winning
newsinthesun.com ThE Spanish Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, told reporters on friday that in just 18 months the government’s plan to combat tax evasion and social security fraud has netted in excess of 22.5 billion euros for the public coffers.
This amount is split between 16.5 billion from tax evasion and 6.152 billion in recovered social security payments for irregular workers and other Social Security fraud. The vice president reported that more than 3,000 individuals have been charged with offences as part of Police operations, and investigations into over 520 thousand benefit cheats has saved Spanish taxpayers 3.161 billion euros. Whilst not necessarily highlighting fraud, the new measures to control discov-

hAVE you decided to come to Spain to escape the biting British cold? Are you worried about accessing public healthcare for the next few months?
Rest assured that the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will cover you for medically necessary treatment in public hospitals that cannot wait until your return home. What is considered medically necessary treatment is determined by the doctor in Spain. You should also be aware that there are hospitals that offer both public and private healthcare. It is your responsibility to tell them if you want to be treated under the EHIC. You should also know that the EHIC does not cover every eventuality like private care or repatriation back to the UK. www.tenerife-weekly.com Leon the Gorilla from Loro Parque has embarked on the journey of his life and moved to Brazil to establish the first family of gorillas on the West Plains in South America. After 8 years living together with another 5 gorillas in the Group of unmarried males in the Park, the time has come for him to create his own family unit, as planned within the European project for the conservation of species at risk of extinction (EEP), which ensures and coordinates the survival of the species.
On an Iberia flight co-ordinated by Maurice Ward Logistics, the 15-yearold Gorilla, 1.70 meters tall and weighing 198 kg travelled together with another female named LouLou, from Howletts Zoo in the UK, to Belo Horizonte in Brazil, where they will both meet with Imbi, a female where it is hoped they will form a new family. When they arrive, Leon will be the only male gorilla in South America, the star of a zoo in which nobody is going to challenge his leadership. Leon was born at an Israeli Zoo and, along with his brother Aladin was transferred to Tenerife to be able to live within a family group. As is common with the unmarried males in nature, Gorilla families are

Leon Goes Home formed by a single adult male and several females with their young. When the males reach adolescence they leave the clan and form groups of singles with other outcasts, until they find females to start their own families. In the 1990s, surplus
of young gorillas expelled from the family group were a problem for zoos, as they must be separated from the rest. To resolve this problem and reproduce as faithfully as possible the social life of this critically endangered
species in its habitat in Central Africa, Loro Parque pioneered a group of unmarried males as a genetic reserve, a project that involved building a special site without guarantees that it would work. This group which Loro Parque has grown is currently the largest in Europe, for this reason, when another Zoo is in need of a male, the EEP looks at these reserves and decides which would be the most appropriate animal. On this occasion they picked Leon for his genetic, physical and psychological characteristics.

The 2013 annual Poppy Appeal of The Royal British Legion is approaching and here, in Tenerife, we will be starting with an Appeal Launch at the Albatross Bar in Costa del Silencio on Thursday 24th October 2013, at 8.00pm. The evening will include entertainment and a raffle. Why not come along and enjoy the fun and the fellowship.
The boxes of poppies and collection tins will be distributed, in the south of Tenerife, by the Tenerife branch of The Royal British Legion, as from 18th October, and collected from the 12th November 2013. We are aware of the current financial situation, but hope that the usual generous response from the people of Tenerife will enable The Royal British Legion to continue its work, helping those ex-service personnel and their dependents in need. With the proposed withdrawal of troops from current troubled areas by 2014, this work is expected to increase. Boxes have been distributed here in the south of Tenerife by The Royal British Legion, for

Even More Ketchup than Salsa: The Final Dollop carries on where the original left off, portraying the calamities and chaos of running a bar/restaurant in Tenerife when you haven’t a clue what you’re doing. In 1991 Joe and Joy, along with Joe’s brother and his wife, borrowed a fortune to swap a life of fish filleting on a cold Lancashire market to buy a bar/restaurant on a sunny Spanish holiday island. Three years on and they still very much feel like fish out of water thanks to the language barrier, bureaucratic bungling and complete inability to master the art of pandering to a bizarre array of holidaymakers and expats. The first book became an international bestseller on Kindle. In the UK it beat Karl Pilkington’s Idiot Abroad tales and even Bill Bryson’s numerous tomes to the number one spot in the Travel section on Amazon. In the US, More Ketchup than Salsa entered the top 100 of all Kindle books in June this year.
“The Final Dollop is a darker book than More Ketchup,” says Joe, “but still with plenty of laughs, characters and scenarios that anybody who’s lived in, or knows Tenerife will easily recognise.” The book will be released
through Amazon on November 5th, followed by a print version shortly after. If you’d like notification of when this, and his next books are available, email Joe at writer@joecawley.co.uk and he’ll gladly keep you informed.

WE already know from our previous detox articles that aloe vera is good for you internally, so let’s have a look and see what it can do for us externally.
The ancient Egyptians call the aloe vera plant “the plant of immortality” and because of that it was widely used by the Egyptian Queens in their search for eternal youth. It has long been used topically as a soother for sunburn through its powerful healing activity at the epithelial level of the skin and it acts as a protective layer on the skin and helps replenish its moisture. Because of the nutritional qualities and antioxidant properties of aloe vera, the skin heals quicker. Aloe also moisturizes the skin without giving it a greasy feel, so it`s perfect for anyone with an oily skin complexion. As we get older, everyone begins to worry about the appearance of fine lines and the loss of elasticity in their skin. Aloe leaves contain a plethora of antioxidants including, beta carotene, vitamin C and E which can help improve the skin’s natural firmness and keep the skin hydrated.
Aloe vera gel can help heal stretch marks. The skin is like one big piece of elastic that’ll expand and contract as needed to accommodate growth. But if the skin stretches too far, too fast (due to pregnancy, rapid weight gain or loss) the elasticity of the skin can be damaged, leaving behind unsightly marks. Men’s skin can also benefit from aloe gel which can be used as an aftershave treatment as its healing properties can treat small cuts and tears caused by shaving. On Wednesday 23 October from 6pm until 9 pm, the full range of skin care products by Forever Living will be available for “trying and buying”

Alonso spoke to reporters on Tuesday, on the occasion of the commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the return to the island of Aboriginal Guanche mummies from Necochea, Argentina. Guanche was the name by which the natives of Tenerife called themselves, Guan Chenech is thought to have meant “Man from Chenech”, or man from Tenerife, over time, the term Guanche became identified with all the native peoples of the Canaries Suggestions for the origins of the Guanches have ranged from Celtic immigrants from mainland Spain or Portugal,
to Norse invaders, supplying a possible explanation for their blonde hair and blue eyes. Berber immigrants from nearby Saharan Africa almost certainly inhabited some of the eastern islands, and place names bear a striking resemblance to Berber tribal languages, occasionally blue eyes and fair hair crop up among the Berbers as well, so the Guanches’ actual origin is still open to question The Museo de la Naturaleza y el Hombre – The Museum of Nature and Man, in Santa Cruz, is considered is a world reference with regard to the preservation of mummies. The director of the Ar-
chaeological section of the Museum, Conrado Rodriguez, said that the specimen currently displayed in Madrid is the best preserved mummy of all of those that are scattered around the world. Rodriguez went on, “The bombings during World War I in Europe destroyed many of the remains of the indigenous peoples of Tenerife, but we are aware there are Guanche mummies deposited in Great Britain, Canada and France. When asked about the specimen in Madrid, President Alonso said: “We will keep on insisting until we have the mummy back on the island”.
By Janet Anscombe A PARTIAlly burned body was found inside a car on Monday in the fátima area of Güímar in Tenerife. The Guardia Civil are investigating the cause of death, Diario de Avisos’ Tinerfe fumero reported that the body not only showed signs of a blow to the head but was also tied and covered with an unidentified fabric, which suggests that this could end up as a murder enquiry.
the vehicle, a Citroën C4, and it seems that due to the fire’s failure to destroy the body or the car, there is quite some evidence for police to go on. Despite similarities with previous cases, usually involving drugs, where attempts have been made to burn a body. Initial reports stated that the body was that of a doctor and this has now been confirmed. He was 68-years-old, and had retired from his residency at Candelaria Hospital. He continued nonetheless to work in the private sector. The autopsy was carried out on Tuesday, but the results have not yet been released. The main thrust
of the police investigation, however, is said to be that he was killed for “economic motives”, and it might be significant that he was a director of the medical services and supplies company – Patas Canarias Torres SL - in whose car he was discovered. Police seem quite sure that there were two killers, and that they and the doctor knew each other. A further hypothesis is that the killers only meant to frighten their victim, but that their actions got out of hand. Beyond this, for the moment, the whole case is now sub judice while the police investigation continues.

www.tenerife-weekly.com The nightmare is finally over for some people who were fined for “illegal letting”. Having had a fine of, originally, 18,000 Euros hanging over their head for months, some of them for more than a year, the first Alotca appeal judgments were given this week. As we had hoped, the appeals were successful and the fines have been nullified. Because of the status of the cases, the ruling is final, and the Government is not able to appeal the verdict.
The defences submitted by Alotca lawyers José Escobedo and Santiago Saenz, Tenerife Litigation, were strong and comprehensive in their own right – detail is impossible to provide because there are still many cases outstanding relying on the same defences, but were considerably bolstered by a recent ruling from the top legal department of the Canarian Government , the Presidencia-Consejo Consultivo: this ruling, which was made for, and in direct response to, submissions from José Escobedo and Santiago Saenz, confirmed that inspection by internet alone was illegal. The Court judgments have precedential value, which

Illegal Letting – Nightmare Over For Some
means that under the Spanish constitution other cases fined on the same grounds, and appealed by Alotca with the same defences submitted by Escobedo and Saenz, should have the same result. Some of those who were appealing their fines had a concession whereby they did not have to lodge the fine monies with the Court in advance; others, however, were still required to do so. These will now be refunded. It must be stressed that those who were fined based on investigations that were more thorough than just internet-only inspections are not covered by this judgment. Also, different defences evidently might achieve different results, and this ruling only concerns clients of Tenerife Litigation because it is specifically based on the nature and particular format of the appeal submitted. It’s worth noting, however, that anyone who has failed to submit an appeal in time and who therefore faces enforcement, or who has already paid a fine based on internet-only inspection without appealing to the Government, can now apply
janetanscombe.com
either for their fine to be overturned or for any monies paid to be refunded. They would be well advised to seek
advice from Alotca to ensure that their application is correctly submitted. What must be stressed
above all, however, is that this is a reprieve. Many owners who will benefit from it will perhaps privately acknowl-
edge that they were, indeed, letting “illegally”, whether in ignorance or from a grievance that they had been misadvised when they bought their properties. The reprieve is an almost undreamt of piece of good luck won by hard work and legal brilliance. These owners cannot afford to make the same mistake twice, not least because any subsequent fine could be at the higher “second-offence” level of around 30,000 Euros, and because the Courts could not be expected to be sympathetic a second time around, particularly when the Government now knows the legal minimum required for its inspections. The simple fact is that, at present, the law is updated, but unchanged in these essentials. Letting a residential property for holidays – commercial rentals of less than three months achieved by openly offering the property to the public – is prohibited absolutely. Letting a touristic property for holidays under the same conditions is also illegal: any commercial holiday lets in such property must be made through the on-site sole agent.

Exchange Turns Into Nightmare For Canarian Kids
The Adeje department of education under Andrés Pérez Ramos has announced the granting of up to 50,000 Euros in aid for university students and those undertaking professional training programmes.
According to Perez Ramos, Adeje council takes equality of education among its young people very seriously adding that the council felt that a solid education was the best way for the borough’s youth to enter the labour market in the future. He added that while other administrations may be cutting education budgets, in Adeje there was increased emphasis on access to learning for all. “Education”, he said, “contributes to equality of opportunity and is indispensable for a democratic society”. Grant aid will made available in the areas of transport, accommodation, buying books and study materials or fee payments. Applicants must be registered residents of Adeje and have been for at least one year, and studying

The students, who paid a private company based in Puerto de la Cruz, were promised work contracts and arranged accommodation during their stay in Germany. About 157 young Spaniards from different autonomous communities took up the offer, but were shocked to find after 3 weeks of waiting around, the reality
did not meet up with expectations. The students complained of inadequate accommodation and the lack of the promised contracts, worried that their funds were dwindling away. Once advised, the Government of the Canary Islands made arrangements in collaboration with Banco Santander, for a commission free emergency aid of 150 euros per person to be sent to the youngsters. The Vice-Minister of external action, Cándido Padrón, has been in phone contact with the student’s spokesman, Jonathan García, since last Friday. After a meeting between representatives of the Em-
bassy of Spain in Germany, the German Government, the Government of the State of Thuringia, the Chamber of Commerce and German trade representatives, it was agreed that the problems relating to contracts, accommodation and rest of the agreed conditions of the visit will be addressed urgently. At the time of writing, 2 youngsters have already returned to the Canary Islands, leaving 2 from Gran Canaria and 9 from Tenerife whose situation will be resolved this week. Information regarding the situation has been passed to the Department of Trade and Consumption, who will investigate the matter further.

Mainland News In Brief Spain’s Interior Ministry says police have arrested the suspected leader of a terrorist recruitment network that allegedly sent militants to carry out attacks for al-Qaida-linked groups in Syria. A statement said Spanish citizen Yassin Ahmed Laarbi was arrested in the Spanish north African enclave of Ceuta. Police detained eight suspected members of the network June 21 in Ceuta. Laarbi could not be found during that operation. The group is said to have sent 50 militants to Syria. The statement said Laarbi was also looking to go to Syria. The group allegedly trained and financed the militants at bases in Ceuta and in neighbouring Morocco. In June, the ministry said the recruits fought against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad and some had taken part in suicide bombings.
Spanish oil and gas company Repsol says it has made 89 million euros by selling its 25% stake in a power plant in Bilbao city to BP. The sale price for the combined-cycle power plant of Bahia de Bizkaia Electricidad was close to 135 million euros. Earlier this year Repsol agreed to sell its liquefied natural gas assets to Shell for $6.65 billion as part of its divestment strategy. The Bahia plant was initially included in Repsol’s LNG sale agreement with Shell. Repsol says its deal with Shell will go ahead, despite the sale of the plant to BP. On Sunday, the Catholic Church in Spain will beatify more than 500 people, most of who died in the country’s 1936-39 civil war, despite calls for Pope Francis to cancel the controversial event. Critics of what Spanish media have described as “the biggest ever beatification in the history of the Church” accuse the Church of helping to legitimize Francisco Franco’s military uprising and dictatorship. An alliance of Spanish groups wrote to Francis asking him to cancel a “political act of pro-Franco affirmation” by the Catholic Church. Some 25,000 people are expected to attend the ceremony of 522 “martyrs of the 20th century in Spain” in the eastern city of Tarragona, according to the Spanish Episcopal Conference. Pope Francis will open the ceremony with a pre-recorded video message Spanish airline Air Europa plans to exercise an option to acquire eight Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, a spokesman for the company said, confirming an earlier report in financial newspaper El Economista. “These planes will reach us from 2020,” the spokesman said. The planned acquisition follows Air Europa’s order for eight new Boeing 737s in the week through to Sept. 24. Air Europa’s buying streak forms part of a strong expansion drive in to medium- and long-haul routes left by the rival airline Iberia. Women from the feminist group Femen staged a topless protest in the Spanish Parliament against the conservative government’s planned abortion law reform. Three women standing in the lower house’s public gallery took off their tops and chanted “abortion is sacred” as Justice Minister Alberto Ruiz-Gallardon spoke during a weekly session. One of the women climbed up on to a gallery railing and wrapped her arms around a pillar as she shouted down at the politicians. The women, who had the message painted on their bodies, were dragged away by parliament ushers after around three minutes. Ruiz-Gallardon opposes Spain’s abortion without restrictions until the 14th week and wants it once again only available under certain conditions concerning the health of the mother and the foetus.

F1 Driver Maria de Villota Found Dead
Former Spanish Formula One test driver Maria de Villota, has been found dead in a hotel in Seville. She was one of the few women to come close to the top of the sport but her career was cut short by an horrific accident last year.
De Villota, who lost her right eye and fractured her skull at a test in England in July 2012, had apparently died of ‘natural’ causes, a Spanish police spokeswoman said: “We are assuming it was a natural death, but we cannot confirm anything,” adding that forensic scientists and a homicide unit would examine the scene. The crash happened at Duxford airfield in England after De Villota had completed a test run and was returning to the mechanics. The car suddenly accelerated into the back of a team truck with her helmet taking much of the impact. She was taken to Cambridge’s Addenbrooke’s hospital and had an emergency operation that began on a Tuesday afternoon and kept her in theatre until the following morning. Although the 33-year-old recovered from the life-threatening injuries sustained in the crash, she no longer competed and had instead become an inspirational figure for aspiring female drivers and had been due to present a book detailing her experiences on Monday. The daughter of former F1 racer Emilio De Villota, she was appointed test driver for Anglo-Russian team Marussia a few months before her crash. Although she never took part in a general test with other drivers, she was one of only a handful of women to have driven Formula One cars in the last decade.
None, though, have come near to racing one in competition. The news of her sudden death stunned Spain and the motor racing world. “I feel I owe it to her (to say something) because, out of the paddock and out of the motorsport bubble, she was an incredible character, she was a fighter,” Susie Wolff, a Williams development driver who had a test for the team last July and knew De Villota well. “She had such a spirit for life and what she came through was a testament to her strength of character and her positive outlook,” added the Scot from the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka. “After the accident she was so behind me and had such a lust for life, she was so happy to be alive and that she’d sur-
vived it and she had so many great plans for the future. She was just an incredible lady, no matter about what she did on the racetrack. She was just an incredible character.” Spanish F1 driver Fernando Alonso appeared lost for words in an interview with radio broadcaster Cadena Ser shortly after hearing the news. “I really don’t know what to say, pray for her and her family and the whole motor sport family. She was really loved by everyone.” De Villota’s family posted a brief message on Facebook: “Dear friends. Maria has left us. She had to go to heaven like all the angels. We give thanks to God for the year and half more he allowed her to be with us.
Seatbelts Considered For Trains
The Spanish government is considering installing seat belts on board trains in an effort to improve safety following the Santiago de Compostela crash that killed 79.
Minister of Development Ana Pastor told the EU’s Transport Council that the country’s infrastructure manager, Adif, and operator Renfe were working on a series of initiatives designed to improve safety on Spain’s railways. Following calls from victims of the crash in July,
Pastor said the government would be exploring the possibility of installing seat belts on trains. In 2007, the RSSB published research into the safety benefits of restraints. The results showed that a passenger wearing a threepoint seat belt would sustain less serious injuries than an unrestrained passenger. However, the RSSB recommended that they should not be introduced, as installing the restraints in seats not designed for them would result in “excessive and injurious deformation in accident situations”. Equally, passengers not wearing restraints in
stiffened seats designed to accommodate them would suffer more serious injuries than they currently would. Among the measures, Pastor said that it was important to standardise security systems across Europe’s railways. Last week, the European Commission reached a ‘general approach agreement’ on plans to simplify the safety approval process across the continent. With the introduction of the Fourth Railway
Package, the EU is seeking to create a Single European Rail Area that would only require operators and manufacturers to obtain a single set of approvals to operate across the whole of Europe. Spain has said that it supports the idea of having certification for domestic-only traffic, managed by the national safety authority, and a separate license for crossborder traffic, managed by the European Railway Agency (ERA).

Spanish Band in mexican Kidnap drama
A SPANISh electro pop group has been released after a being kidnapped by the notorious los zetas cartel in Mexico.
Delorean, a Barcelona-based four-piece, were held hostage in a Mexico City hotel for 30 hours by the drug lords, who demanded nearly a quarter of a million pounds for their lives. Fortunately, local police were able to track the Zetas, famous for gruesome torture methods and mass murders, and band members have returned to Spain. Delorean had gone to their Mexico City hotel following a performance at a festival when they were lured into a hostage situation through a fake phone call from the Zetas cartel. They had been told they had to vacate the premises due to a shootout, but they were taken by cartel members as soon as they complied. Ekhi Lopetegi, Guillermo Astrain, Unai Lazcano, and Igor Escudeo, originally from the Basque country, were taken to a different hotel and locked in two separate rooms, according to Spanish
Newspaper El Pais. The Zetas then contacted their family member’s demanding a ransom of five million Mexican, around £240,000, for their release. Thanks to various police forces including Interpol, the source of the phone calls made to the band’s hotel could be tracked and
after 30 hours in captivity the four men could be released. The band posted their version of the events on their official Facebook page: ‘On Monday morning October 7th we received a phone call at our hotel room in Mexico City from a person posing as a hotel security officer. security threat at the hotel. ‘What followed for the next 30 hours was an experience where the threat of death was real due to the psychological manipulation inflicted on us by our kidnappers. ‘Thanks to the fantastic work of the National Police in Spain, Ertzantza, Interpol and the Federal Police in Mexico, we were successfully rescued yesterday morning. ‘While it would be convenient to blame Mexico, that would not be sound. This could have occurred anywhere in the world. ‘Our hope is that this situation will bring attention to the abuse that we were subjected to by our kidnappers, so that other travelers (sic) do not fall victim in the future. This has been extremely difficult for us and our families. ‘At this time we have no further comment and we ask that you respect our privacy so that we can return to normality in our lives.’ Their 2010 debut album was hailed by reviewers on New York Times and Pitchfork, and the band had been preparing a world tour to promote their new album Apar, when they were kidnapped.

os zetas is one of the most dangerous and powerful crime syndicates in Mexico. The cartel is known for committing some of the most brutal crimes in latin America as part of their on-going turf war with rival cartels.
Los Zetas was set up by a group of defectors from the Mexican Special Forces in the early 1990s and grew into one of the most powerful and brutal groups in the area within its first two decades. After splitting from the Gulf Cartel in 2010, the cartel embarked on one of the most violent turf wars in modern Latin American history, turning Mexico into a battle ground. As well as smuggling drugs, control local crime syndicates, bribe and kidnap, Los Zetas use fear, torture and mass murder to stay in power. The group is responsible for several of Mexico’s bloodiest massacres in the 10s including the San Fernando Massacres of 2010 and 2011 where 72 and 193 people respectively, were found tortured and brutally murdered. Los Zetas has been branded the ‘most technologically advanced, sophisticated, and dangerous cartel operating in Mexico’ by the US Government.
www.tenerife-weekly.com The Coca-Cola Company recently launched a branding campaign in Spain, allowing consumers to personalise a Coca-Cola can or bottle with their name on it.
The global brand has achieved numerous marketing successes over the years, so it’s no surprise that the campaign received overwhelming response in just a couple of days. In fact, this award-winning “Share a Coke” campaign has previously been launched in several countries including Denmark, Australia, France and the UK, but there is a little twist behind the Spanish version. This event is very first campaign Coca-Cola has ever launched in Spain since they started selling the fizzy drink there 1953. That’s 60 years of watching all the other countries get their fun with the creative promotional stunts! The Spanish must be so excited over their first Coke campaign, but it seems the beverage giant took a little shortcut in this promotion. Although it claims to be a personalization service, the company is said to have chosen only122 commonly used names in Spain, such as “María”, “José”, “Ana” and general titles for “Dad”, “Mum”, “Daughter” and so on to appear on the cans. They also threw in a couple

of options that could make nice party gifts, such as “Most Beautiful Smile”, “Cutest Couple”. The cola brewers have previously received backlash from consumers in other countries due to similar name selection strategies, but with so many unique names in the world, it is quite inevitable that they have to narrow down on the variety in order to cut down on production time. These names will be on 3 variations of packaging, including cans, glass bottles and PET bottles, totalling up to 5.5 million prints. There were rumours that the marketing geniuses behind the “Share a Coke” campaign intended to produce “King” and “Queen” versions for celebratory sharing in Amsterdam when the Dutch crowned their new King earlier this year, but the idea was deemed too cheesy. Some cheeky consumers commented that they wanted to
print “Pepsi” on their Coke cans. For those of us whom Coca-Cola hasn’t reached out to, there’s

rown Prince Felipe presided over Spain’s national day celebrations on Saturday, for the first time, while King Juan Carlos recovers from a hip operation.
A shortage of Britishtrained nurses is forcing NHS hospital trusts to look for staff overseas as they struggle to keep wards adequately staffed. Many trusts have sent nursing managers to recruitment fairs on the Continent. Spain and Portugal have proved the most popular countries targeted by trusts seeking nurses. The 40 trusts recruited a total of 503 nurses from Portugal, 472 from Spain, 155 from Ireland and 111 from the Philippines.
Dr Peter Carter, chief executive and general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, said: “This is symptomatic of the short-term, boomand-bust workforce planning which is endemic in the NHS. It is frankly perplexing that on the one hand nursing posts are being cut and training places being reduced, while on the other, desperate managers are raiding overseas workforces.” Nottingham University Hospitals Trust currently has around 200 vacancies for
nurses. Maria Bentley, who oversees recruitment, said: “We are definitely in the midst of a nursing shortage. It has become more acute over the last year but it’s been going in a general direction over the last couple of years. In the last six months we are just not getting applicants.” She blamed competition for staff from private and community providers, large numbers of nurses approaching retirement and a lack of training places.
Spain’s 75-year-old monarch left hospital on October 1 after surgeons replaced his prosthetic left hip in the latest of a string of operations that have raised questions over his reign and fuelled speculation of a possible abdication. Felipe presided over a military parade in Madrid, dressed in military uniform and accompanied by his wife Letizia as they briefly met with troops from the Royal Guard. The parade lasted barely an hour and was a toneddown affair, in line with crisishit Spain’s austerity regime. The budget for the event was slashed by another 15% from last year and is now at
823,000 euros down from 2.8 million euros in 2011. In the absence of the king, who is also chief of the army, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy represented the state’s institutions, as the crown prince
cannot replace the king at official functions. Spain’s national day commemorates the anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s first arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492.

Thalidomide 3D Mini Trial Me For
Christmas?
A group of Spanish people with severe birth defects as a result of using Thalidomide are suing German drugs company Gruenenthal for manufacturing the drug.
The litigants are suing the company for 204m Euros (£173m) at a trial in Madrid. The German pharmaceutical company withdrew Thalidomide in 1961 but never accepted liability for the birth defects, despite apologising to victims last year. Gruenenthal launched Thalidomide in 1957 and it was prescribed to women as a sedative for morning sickness between 1950 and 1960. However, many of the babies born to mothers who had taken the drug suffered birth defects, such as short or missing limbs or hips. The compensation figure the claimants are seeking was calculated by multiplying 20,000 Euros by the percentage point of each person’s disability. It is thought the trial will last just one day and the ruling is expected within a month. In its apology letter last year, the company said: “Grunenthal has acted in accordance with the state of scientific knowledge and all

industry standards for testing new drugs that were relevant and acknowledged in the 1950’s and 1960’s. We regret that the teratogenic potential of Thalidomide could not be detected by the tests that we and others carried out before it was marketed. “Hence the drug was taken by many women who had no reason to imagine that it could seriously harm their unborn children. Therefore we want to address this message particularly to all the affected and their mothers.
We realise that the mothers are carrying a heavy burden. “We also apologise for the fact that we have not found the way to you from person to person for almost 50 years. Instead, we have been silent and we are very sorry for that. We ask that you regard our long silence as a sign of the silent shock that your fate has caused us.” The trial in Madrid comes as researchers say the number of Thalidomide victims could be much higher than the 10,000 currently estimated.

lieved to be a male eastern grey, which had become injured. The rogue ‘roo was in a distressed state and it is thought it had been hit by a car outside the terminal. It was tranquillised and taken
Initially launched on 15th October in the company’s York store, the intention is to roll out nationwide if the trial is successful. The service offers 3D scanning that takes about 2 minutes to fully scan the surface of an object. It uses a special scanning camera that captures the contours and shape of the object, while identifying up to 6 million different colours for accurate replication. “Anything can be scanned – including people, pets and even cars – and the models can be produced in full colour, white or a bronzestyle coating,” explained an Asda blog post. Once a virtual 3D model has been scanned into the system, it is then sent off to a specialist 3D printer to be recreated in ceramic, with options for a white, full-colour or bronze-style print. The 3D model is recreated by spraying ceramic fluid in thin layers that are each allowed to set before laying down the next, building up a solid object. Prices start at £40 for an 8in figurine, which can be printed and ready to be collected in-store the next week. The models can be scaled to whatever size the customer

Asda expects the “mini me” figures to be popular with shoppers, offering the next evolution of the photograph: “Evolving well beyond simply filling frames with photographs of friends and family, 3D printed ‘mini me’ figures will add a whole new dimension to shoppers’ mantelpieces and the lifelike models are also expected to be popular as personalised wedding cake toppers,” said Asda. “This truly is innovation without limits and Asda hopes to be the first retailer to offer this service nationwide.” Asda has placed restrictions on what can and cannot be scanned to avoid copyright infringement and potential legal issues: “Nothing smaller than a shoe can be scanned by the system, which should prevent issues around the possible replication of banned items such as the 3D printed gun,” said a spokesperson. 3D printers recently became available on the UK high street from Maplin electronics, which launched a £700 printer that comes flat-packed and is no bigger than a traditional machine.
from hopping down the tarmac, things like that. Cyrus, as he has been aptly named after one of the helpers on the scene, will be assessed by a vet following his ordeal.” Australian comedian Julia Morris broke the news on Twitter, where photographs began circulating of the marsupial in the skincare aisle of the terminal’s pharmacy. “Ok, so I’m at Melbourne airport & a KANGAROO has just jumped into the chemist,” she tweeted, with the hashtags #notajoke, #soundslikeajoke, #mustneedaprescriptionfilled. Australia’s national airline, Qantas, features one of the animals on its livery and is
known as the “Flying Kangaroo”, prompting jokes on social media sites. The terminal is located close to countryside known to be frequented by kangaroos and although the tarmac is guarded to ensure the animals do not hop into the path of an aircraft, staff said kangaroos occasionally made their way into the site’s buildings. In January one of the creatures led police on a chase through the airport’s multi-storey car park before it could be sedated and caught, following a similar incident in October 2012. Last spring, Wildlife Victoria responded to calls about 1,190 eastern grey kangaroos.

uNDER new European union rules every household in Britain will be expected to separate their recycling into four separate boxes from 2015. Councils across England and Wales have been told they have to follow Eu guidance which will require paper, metal, glass and plastic to be collected separately.
The new rules will raise fears that roads that already have dozens of wheelie bins lined up outside will be blighted by yet more recycling boxes. Lord de Mauley, a minister in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), has written to all local authorities to warn them about the new EU directive. Currently, some councils allow homes to put out ‘comingled’ waste but recycling plants are struggling to keep glass shards out of paper streams. The new rules are being brought in to help councils meet the European Union target of recycling 50 per cent of all household waste by 2020. In his letter, Lord de Mauley wrote to councils:
‘Where waste paper, metal, plastic or glass has been collected separately all reasonable steps must be taken to keep that stream separate from other waste streams wherever this is necessary to provide high quality recyclates. ‘I look to local authorities actively to address these problems, by the effective implementation of the new regulations and by tackling problems with operating practices.’ Campaigners have claimed that the new rules will force homeowners to have yet more bins outside their properties. However, Lord Demauley insisted households would not necessarily need more bins and could follow other councils which already operate a ‘kerbside sort system’ where materials are sorted before being loaded into the waste collection vehicle. He added: ‘I am aware that this is a challenging time for local government as budgets reduce and expectations increase. I would urge all local authorities to work more closely with each other to sharpen procurement practices and share both facilities and services where possible.’ Doretta Cocks, spokeswoman for the Campaign for Weekly Waste Collec-

Multiple plastic crates for individual sorting of materials will create a storage problem for many residents.’ A spokesman for Defra said that local authorities would not necessarily be forced to bring in new recycling bins if rubbish is sorted at the kerbside: ‘From 2015 it will be a legal requirement to collect paper, metal, plastic and glass waste materials separately,’ he said. ‘This does not mean that mixed waste bin collections cannot continue; it is up to local authorities to decide what works best in their local area within the law.’

M
ade l eine McCann’s parents have said they are “absolutely delighted” with the “overwhelming” response to a new appeal for information about her disappearance.
Police received more than 730 calls and 212 emails following Monday night’s televised reconstruction and release of previously unseen evidence. Kate and Gerry McCann said they are “genuinely hopeful” that one or more of the responses would lead to a major breakthrough in the investigation. During the Crimewatch show, two new e-fits were broadcast of a man, who may have been Madeleine’s kidnapper, seen carrying a child a few hundred yards from the family’s apartment at around 10pm. Viewers were shown two images of a dark-haired man, based on descriptions from two witnesses who were staying in Praia da Luz, Portugal, when the three-year-old went missing. The sighting - which came at around the same time Mrs McCann checked on her three children - had previously been considered of less significance than an earlier, now-discounted sighting around 9.15pm. Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood said two independent callers had put forward the same name for the man for the 10pm sighting and another caller gave a name of a man who was known to be in Portugal at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance. In a statement the McCanns said: “We know that the public desperately want to help the search for Madeleine. If anyone was in Praia da Luz around the time of Madeleine’s abduc-

tion and has not spoken to the Metropolitan Police, or if they know who any of the e-fits might be, please have the courage to come forward and speak to the police in confidence.” For six years, detectives believed a man seen by one of the McCanns’ friends, Jane Tanner, carrying a child close to the apartment in the Algarve tourist resort at around 9.15pm was their key suspect. But a review of the evidence under the Metropolitan Police’s Operation Grange concluded that it was an innocent British holidaymaker carrying his daughter home from a creche. DCI Redwood said he realised that the man seen later could also be entirely innocent, but appealed for help from the public in identifying him: “This child is described as being about three to four with blonde hair, possibly wearing pyjamas, and the man is white with dark hair,” he said. “If this is you, and you are nothing to do with Madeleine’s disappearance, then we really need to speak to you. It’s so important for us to eliminate innocent sightings.” Investigators are also trying to identify mysterious fair-haired men seen “lurking around” the apartment at the time who could be Dutch or German. Two e-fits of the fair-haired men have been released. One is of a man seen twice by the same witness near the flat where the McCanns were staying. He was 30 to 35, thin, with short hair, shaving spots on his face and was wearing a black leather jacket. Another witness saw a similar-looking man in the resort. Police are also looking at a spate of break-ins in the area, one of which happened in the same week a year before Madeleine went missing, where a man got into a flat where young children were sleeping.
Overseas Response
Police say they received 150 phone calls from the public after an appeal about Madeleine McCann was aired on Dutch television. Following a similar appeal on Norway’s TV2 channel on Monday, a Norwegian woman has claimed to have seen a girl resembling Madeleine with a strange man when she was on holiday in Spain two years ago. The woman contacted former police superintendent Finn Abrahamsen with the tip-off after the ex-policeman appeared on the chan-
nel to discuss a new suspect in the case. Mr Abrahamsen told the programme: “There was a lady who had been on holiday in Spain a year and a half or two years ago. She was at a shopping mall and believed she observed the missing girl with an older man. She’s pretty sure this could be Madeleine McCann. “It is a huge challenge and we should not have too high expectations, but we can’t give up until we’ve tried everything. We have already seen that it flows in tips from
throughout Europe, and it becomes even more focused on Germany and Holland. “For Norwegian citizens who believe they have observed something interesting, they should contact the police. The police in Norway then contact the British police, who has the charge for the case. We have a good contact with British police; this good contact has lasted over the years. It is easy for the police in Norway to pass on tips. So contact the Norwegian police, and ask them to pass it on.”

Bulgari Jewellery Exhibition
Bulgari jewellery once worn by Elizabeth Taylor has gone on display as part of the brand’s first U.S. retrospective in San Francisco.
The Art of Bulgari: La Dolce Vita & Beyond, held at the de Young Fine Arts Museum, allows visitors an up-close look at some of the jewellery house’s most refined works from the mid to late 20th century, including many pieces that once belonged to Taylor herself. The exhibit’s yards of diamonds, emeralds, and sapphires provide a rare glance at impeccable jewel-making craftsmanship, with many never-before-seen items valued at millions of dollars. Bulgari is known for its lavish designs that often incorporate brightly coloured precious gems and heavy metalwork. The jewels have attracted high-profile customers including Sophia Loren and Ingrid Bergman, as well as Taylor, whose embattled relationship with actor Richard Burton famously resulted in multiple Bulgari purchases at the brand’s Rome boutique. Eight of the exhibit’s approximately 150 total pieces once belonged to Taylor. They include an emerald and diamond collar with a

detachable brooch that was part of the film star’s ‘emerald suite’, a miniature collection of exquisite emerald pieces. The piece sold for over $6.5 million at a massive 2011 Christie’s auction of items from Taylor’s jewellery and fashion.
The Sapphire Sautoir, a sautoir necklace bearing a 52.72-carat sugarloaf cabochon sapphire that also belonged to Taylor, is included in the retrospective. It sold for more than $5.9 million at the same Christie’s auction. Taylor is not the only ac-
tress represented in the de Young exhibit. A set of diamond bracelets that belonged to Ellen Barkin, are also on view. The retrospective is currently open to the public and will run until February 17, 2014.
Kansas City Record Breakers Kansas City football fans are “loud and proud” of their team - in fact louder than any crowd at an open-air stadium. According to league officials, the Chiefs fans generated a crowd roar of 137.5 decibels as the team beat the Oakland Raiders, last Sunday.
It shattered the stadium’s previous noise level record of 116 decibels and surpassed the previous world record of 136.6 decibels set by Seattle Seahawks football fans at home. To put that in perspective, a jet engine at 100 feet creates 140 decibels of sound. The National Football League and Chiefs officials said an official with the

Guinness World Record was at the site and took the measurements. The recordsetting attempt was orchestrated by Chiefs fans. “Every win is a great win.
When you can win with a crowd like this, it makes it even better,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said in a post-game news conference. “It was loud, I mean
real loud. Ground-shaking loud.” The Chiefs won their sixth straight game, remaining undefeated, as they took down Oakland 24-7.
The AA advises all drivers to make sure they know the rules of the road in the countries they’re visiting, and these are constantly being updated, so do keep an eye out. While some laws are very sensible, others are a little harder to comprehend. TravelSupermarket recently published a list of the most unusual rules of foreign roads, a selection of which youo will find below. Don’t drive on your next holiday without reading this first! The next time you’re in Belarus, be sure to keep your car clean as driving a dirty one is against the law. In France, although the law imposing an 11 euro fine has been postponed indefinitely, you are legally required to carry an unused self-test breathalyser in your vehicle. Expect spot checks of your GPS system in Germany. Police check to see whether it has been set up to alert drivers to where speed cameras are - if it is you’ll be asked to turn it off. In Cyprus, you are not allowed to eat or drink anything while driving – the “no drinking and driving rule”
doesn’t just apply to alcohol, but soft drinks too. In Italy, you will be fined for driving into a historic zone, or Zone Traffico Limitato (ZTL), without the correct permit. If you require prescription glasses to drive, you’d better ensure you have a spare pair in your car next time you’re driving in Spain; otherwise you are breaking the law. You can be given a ticket for driving too slowly in the USA. It is strictly taboo to drive without a shirt in Thailand, and doing so could result in a fine. In Denmark, it’s compulsory to check under your car for people before setting off on your journey Traffic in Manila, Philippines, is so bad that you are not allowed to drive your car on certain weekdays. Registration plates ending in a 1 or 2 are banned on Mondays, 3 or 4 Tuesdays, 5 or 6 Wednesdays, 7 or 8 Thursdays and 9 or 0 Fridays. In California, it is illegal for female motorists to wear a dressing gown behind the wheel.

Implant Hopes For Parkinson’s Sufferers S cientists in Bristol have developed a hitech brain implant using a system of tubes and catheters that allows them to pump protein therapy deep into patients’ brains, which could transform the lives of people living with Parkinson’s disease.
It is hoped the technique will encourage cells damaged by the disease to grow again. The protein, known as glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), is injected once a month through a port just behind the ear and pushed through the tubes and catheters by an external pump. Doctors at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, have trialled the system on six patients and are now looking for another 36 to continue the research. Dr Kieran Breen, director of research and innovation at Parkinson’s UK, said: “For years, the potential of GDNF as a treatment for Parkinson’s
has remained one of the great unanswered research questions. This new study will take us one step closer to finally answering this question once and for all. “We believe GDNF could have the potential to unlock a new approach for treating Parkinson’s that may be able to slow down and ultimately stop the progression of the condition all together. Currently there are
very few treatments available for people with Parkinson’s and none capable of stopping the condition from advancing.” Parkinson’s, which affects more than 127,000 people in the UK, develops when a lack of a chemical called dopamine causes nerve cells within the brain to die. This in turn causes symptoms such as stiffness, slowness of movement and tremors.
Previous research studies have suggested GDNF has the potential to encourage these cells to grow again - in effect stopping the progression of Parkinson’s. Professor Steven Gill, from Frenchay Hospital, siad the equipment could be used to treat a variety of conditions: “If this technology proves to be safe and reliable ... it has huge applications across neuro-
logical diseases, not only for treating neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s but also brain tumours and other conditions,” he said. The £2m project is funded by Parkinson’s UK with support from The Cure Parkinson’s Trust. A foundation set up by actor Michael J Fox, who has the condition, also made a large donation.
Man Saws Off Own Leg Cyclist Stopped On M1
A Chinese man sawed off his right leg because he could not pay for the operation to be performed in hospital. Zheng Yanliang, from Boading in Hefei Province, used a metal saw and a small knife to amputate his leg while he bit on a piece of wood in an effort to mask the intense pain.
According to local media reports, Mr Zheng, a farmer and factory worker from the village of Dongzang, first began to experience pain in his leg in January 2012. After several visits to a local hospital, he was diagnosed with an arterial embolism. With no cure available, amputation was the only answer. A local doctor refused to carry out the procedure and the numerous hospital visits left his family with no money to pay for the operation. Mr Zheng, 47, was sent home and given just three months to live. During that time, Mr Zheng was in agony. Neighbours reported hearing his screams at night, according to local media interviews with his wife. She claimed that three doses of the prescribed painkillers did nothing to relieve his pain. The agony eventually prompted the extreme decision to embark on selfamputation in April last year. Mr Zheng wrapped a piece of wood with a cloth and placed it in his mouth to bite on. He then began to cut his leg using the saw

and the knife. His wife said that when she found him, his leg had been removed and the pain had resulted in three of Mr Zheng’s teeth being forced out from his biting on the wood. The wound on his leg has now healed, but his other leg is now infected with the same disease. Mr Zheng’s appeal for funds to allow him to have his remaining leg am-
putated in the safety of a hospital and coverage of the story, which has only recently emerged in the Chinese media, prompted a doctor in Shanghai to offer his services for free. Zhang Qiang, from the Shanghai Wode Medical Centre, said he was prepared to cover all the costs for further treatment: “My medical colleagues and I will provide him with free medical services,” Dr Zhang said on his microblog.
The culprit was spotted riding south towards London near Junction 9 at Redbourn in Hertfordshire at around noon last Sunday. When officers caught up with the man, they took a picture before escorting him to safety and offering some “words of advice”. After discovering his planned 30-mile journey to the capital was against the law, the man told officers he would take the train instead. Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit later posted the picture to an official Twitter account as a warning to other road users with the hashtag
#dontbeadummy. A Hertfordshire Police spokesman said: “Police were called following reports of a man cycling on the M1 shortly before 12 noon. Police escorted the man off the motorway to safety at Junction 9 and offered words of advice to the cyclist.”

absolute Success in the a
f
IRST Edition, first success. The Amarilla Xtreme Weekend began last weekend, the start of what is set to become a popular event in years to come, and featured three tests, all closely related, over two days. All this, under the most successful organization of Club Natación Alameda, was held at the Marina in San Miguel.
The second weekend of October 2013 will be remembered as the start of an event that will become a byword for sporting events in the archipelago. Three disciplines, Triath-
lon, trail and mountain biking, coupled with the strict competition that mixed to perfection the performance of athletes with fans, with music, food and gifts. The event kicked off with the children’s aquathlon, swiftly followed by the adults cross Triathlon competition. The waters of Marina San Miguel were filled with athletes who broke the calm of the environment. Swimming, Mountain bike test, and running on foot introduced Pavel Castro and Diana de la Rosa as the first winners of the Amarilla Xtreme Triathlon. In the evening, it was the turn of the night trail, bringing nearly a hundred participants, all with their lamp lights, left memories of one of the most beautiful sights of the competi-
tion, competitors lights mingled with flares of the numerous fans who had gathered at the starting point. With two distances (10K and 21K) and a path which joined the technical perfection of toughness and beauty, the trail was flooded with lights in the dark ravines and paths of the village. Diana de Rosa emerged as the winner with her triumph in the 10K. In an identical distance, Achamán Cruz won in the men’s category. In the half-marathon, Joel Cruz surprised friends and spectators alike with his victory and time, and competitor CN Alameda, only 17-yearsold, stopped the Clock at 1:31:44. In the female category, there was only one woman to enrol, Mavi of Salamanca, who completed the test in 2:13:26.
With the Cross Triathlon and Trail ending the first day of competition of the Amarilla Xtreme Weekend, spectators were left to look forward to the highlight of the event, the testing mountain bike off road stage on Sunday. The early hours of Sunday morning brought the sight of the riders preparing their mounts. The spectacular collection of mountain bikes, started at San Miguel to start a competition covering 56 kilometres on a circuit that was virtually unknown to all of the 150 participants. Great technique, power, strength, resistance and high doses of courage were required to complete a demanding journey, which combined lengths of speed with very technical areas, including some

Amarilla Xtreme Weekend in which there was no choice but to walk the bike mounted on the competitor’s shoulders. The rider of a Vadebicis, Juan Mesa, overcame all obstacles and crossed the finish line in first place. In the women’s category, Loreto García was the only one who managed to finish in four hours
required to complete the journey and she clinched top place on the podium. The last arrivals and the subsequent presentation of awards, brought an end to the first edition of the Amarilla Xtreme Weekend, which is already preparing its Second Edition due to popular demand!

999 trivial Britain’s dream requests Wedding dress
fIREfIGhTERS hoping to stop unnecessary 999 calls have released some their most “trivial” requests, including a spider crawling on a pillow and a squirrel wedged behind a wardrobe.
London Fire Brigade received around 100 non-emergency calls a week in the past year. Animals and creepy crawlies featured prominently in the list of weird calls to its control room. One person phoned in to report a fox in their garden and another to seek advice about a bat in their kitchen. An elderly woman rang 999 after throwing a glass of water containing her false teeth at fighting dogs, while another asked firefighters to help retrieve a shoe stuck on a roof. Senior Officer Dave Brown said: “Our advice is simple - if it’s not an emergency, don’t ring 999. If you’re calling because you have a serious phobia, then arrange for a housemate, friend or neighbour to help you. If you’re calling because there’s an unexpected animal in your home, call the RSPCA. “Firefighters are here to help, but we can’t be on speed dial when something trivial happens. We are here to
ThIS is Britain’s dream wedding dress as designed by the experts – thousands of brides.
respond to real emergencies, so if you do find a squirrel in your kitchen or you lose your keys down the toilet, don’t dial 999.”
The women were asked to design their perfect gown, picking every detail from dress shape and length to sleeve style, fabric and embellishment. And this is the result, brought to life over ten days by top bridal designer Stephanie Allin, who makes all her gowns by hand at her workshop in Wales. And the catch? Anyone who wants to walk down the aisle in this one will have to pay £15,000 for the privilege. Around 3,000 readers of Brides magazine gave their opinions about what made the perfect dress. The result is a charming mix of the fashionable and the traditional. Lace, brought back into popularity two years ago with the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress, was the favourite fabric for almost half of the brides and appears on most of the dress, including the sleeves and veil. The style of sleeve picked by 44% of the women is surprising,
however. A cap sleeve is the cruellest sort, serving to emphasise broad shoulders and cut the arm off at its widest point. More flattering is the sweetheart neckline, chosen by 39% and also chosen by fashion designers Lanvin, Prada and Gucci on their autumn/winter 2013 catwalks. Designed to add femininity to a dress, the sweetheart works to emphasise the bust, whatever your size, without being revealing, and balances out
those tricky cap sleeves. Together with a waist-cinching embellishment and fashionable fishtail skirt, this hourglass-enhancing dress is something that will flatter any figure. Mrs Allin, who has been designing wedding dresses for 22 years and has a shop in Marylebone, Central London, said: ‘It is made from French Chantilly lace, with silk crepe and silk chiffon underskirts, which give it a beautiful swishing feeling.’

Phillip Morris, the director of Television International Enterprises Archive, unearthed the programmes by looking up the records of overseas shipments of tapes made by the BBC. The stories, The Enemy Of The World (1967) and The Web Of Fear (1968) have now been remastered by BBC Worldwide, the corporation’s commercial arm. Mr Morris said: “I remember wiping the dust off the masking tape on the canisters and my heart missed a beat as I saw the words ‘Doctor Who’. When I read the story code I realised I’d found something pretty special.” Only one episode of The Enemy Of The World - which featured Deborah Watling as companion Victoria and Frazer Hines who later found fame in Emmerdale as Jamie - had remained in the archives, so the addition of
programmes one, two, four, five and six have completed the story. The BBC still had the first edition in the Web Of Fear story, and the new finds mean only number three is missing. The tale introduced Nicholas Courtney as Lethbridge-Stewart, who began with the rank of Colonel, but later became Brigadier. The missing episode has
been recreated using 37 still images which were available and the original audio which survived. Many programmes from the era, along with many classic shows, disappeared as a result of efforts to save space. There are still 27 Doctor Who stories which have not been recovered or for which episodes are missing.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples
Flying Is Fun 4.
5.
W
hen I first came to live in Tenerife, I was working for one of the main tour operators. I had always been a reluctant flyer and felt that I was putting my life in someone else’s hands when I boarded an aircraft. Over the five years that I worked for the company I had to fly backwards and forwards to the UK for meetings and to other islands for special one off shows etc. Over that period of time I became a very happy flyer and the fear subsided. These days, I have reverted to my old ways and find myself gripping onto the nearest object as we take off and land.
Whether you are a nervous flyer or someone who takes air travel with a pinch of salt, there will be a number of things that you won’t know about flying. I have spent the last week speaking to friends in the flying industry and also had the opportunity to speak to a captain who works for one of the major British airlines. So here are some facts that might just help to put you at ease a little. Then again, some of these points may make you a little more nervous! 1. Toilets. Aeroplane toilets can all be unlocked and opened from the outside so be careful what you’re up to in there. 2. Lighting. On take-off and landing at night, the cabin lights are
turned off to allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness. If they need to evacuate you, you will be able to see more clearly. 3. Opening doors mid-flight. Have you ever looked at the emergency door and worried about some crackpot forcing it open at 35,000 feet? I certainly have! Well, there is no need to worry. An individual just doesn’t have the strength to open a door whilst the aircraft is in flight. At high altitudes, the door simply won’t move. The
6.
7.
designers make it impossible for a cabin door to be opened whilst the plane is in flight. Flight deck visits. Most people think that flight deck visits are no longer permitted after the 9/11 attacks. This isn’t true. “It is permitted when the plane is on the ground,” says my pilot friend, “it’s the best part of my job, especially when the passenger is interested and has lots of questions. You can ask during boarding to have a look, but it depends how busy the crew are. The best time to ask is just after landing when everyone is disembarking. Not Telling. If a plane looks like it isn’t going to make it, they probably won’t tell you. The last thing they want is mass panic before everybody goes to their maker. Pay. Cabin Crew only get paid for “flight hours”. The wage clock doesn’t start until the aircraft moves away from the gate. However, from the time they sign in at the airport until the plane gets back into the gate at home base, they are paid an expense allowance which is a very small amount per hour. Diet Coke is famous amongst Cabin Crew as being the most difficult thing to pour because
the fizz takes forever to settle at 35,000 feet. 8. Turbulence. In the United States alone, more than 2 million people fly every single day and yet since 1980, only 3 people have died as a direct result of turbulence. Two of those passengers weren’t wearing their safety belts. As long as your seat belt is on, you’re more likely to be injured by falling luggage than by turbulence itself. Pilots find it odd that so many people are afraid of turbulence. It’s practically impossible for turbulence to cause a crash. Pilots will avoid turbulence not because they’re afraid the wing is going to fall off but because it’s annoying. 9. Cabin air is not as dirty as people think. Some of the air is recycled and some is brought in from outside because it helps to reduce humidity, however it’s passed through hospital quality filters and it’s cleaner than the air found in most public buildings. A complete air change takes place every three or four minutes. If you’re a nervous flier, book a morning flight. During the day, the ground heats up causing bumpier air and you are more likely to experience thunderstorms in the afternoon. 10. Greased Lightning. An aeroplane is basically a big chunk of
metal. You would be forgiven for thinking that when it flies through a storm that it would get hit by lightning. In actual fact, you would be right. All commercial aircraft are hit by lightning at some time or another. But there is nothing to worry about however. The last commercial aircraft to crash as a result of lightning was in 1967. These day’s planes have to pass a number of rigorous lightning certification tests. When lightning hits a most people only notice slight turbulence and wouldn’t even know that they had been hit at all. 11. Ashtrays. In many parts of the world the toilets on a plane still have ashtrays. This is just in-case someone can’t resist lighting up, even though it is an offence. 12. Aircraft collide with birds every day. Most of the time, nobody will even notice. I have to say though that birds have eyes and you can rest assured that they try very hard to keep out of the way. And Finally! For those who still feel a little weak at the knees. 2012 was the safest year on record for commercial flying. Safety features are always being upgraded and air travel has become so reliable that a passenger could fly every day for 123,000 years before being in a fatal crash!

project mercury Brand Beckham in the money astronaut dies NEWly released documents have shown power couple David and Victoria Beckham have increased their combined business revenue to almost £100,000 a day. Papers lodged with Companies house show that Beckham Ventures ltd, which handles Victoria’s fashion range, increased its turnover to £15.4m in 2012.
SCOTT Carpenter, the second American to orbit the Earth and one of the last two surviving Project Mercury astronauts, has died aged 88. his wife, Patty Barrett, said Mr Carpenter had died in a Denver hospice from complications from a stroke he suffered in September.
As an astronaut and aquanaut who lived underwater for the US
Navy, he was the first man to explore both the depths of the ocean and the heights of space. It was Mr Carpenter who gave the famous send-off - “Godspeed, John Glenn” - when Mr Glenn became the first American in orbit in February 1962. Mr Glenn, 92, is the only surviving member of the “Mercury Seven”. Three months later, Carpenter orbited the Earth three times. He lost contact with Nasa during the offtarget landing, but was found safely
David Beckham’s football-focused business, Footwork Productions, grossed £16.5m on the back of endorsements and sponsorships. A third company, Brand Beckham, grossed £3.2m, taking their combined turnover to £35.1m - more than £96,100 a day. The growth of their business ventures proves their ability to move on from being a football player and a pop star. “They both work incredibly hard to make this work for themselves and their family,” a source close to the couple told Sky News. “Victoria’s first love was always fashion, even when she was in the Spice Girls, and so it is great to see the success of her label. gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard There are a lot of different insects that can be seen in gardens in Tenerife and some of them are beneficial and others are the opposite. There are pests that destroy your carefully cultivated flowers, shrubs and trees, and yet other types that feed on these pests.
The Tenerife Gardener’s Friends and Foes
Green Shield Bug
Small white
So it is important to know which insects are the gardener’s friend and which are his or her enemy! There are many insects as well that occupy a neutral territory because they eat other insects both the good and the bad ones.
The praying mantis comes into this category because it will eat bugs you don’t want around but will also eat butterflies and other pollinators that you are hoping to attract. There are several types of mantis on the island with Blepharopsis mendica being the most commonly seen. I hope you will spare the mantis though because of their strange looks and exotic appeal factor!
The robber fly (Promachus latitarsatus) is another in this category. It will catch and kill other flying insects and isn’t fussy about what they are. The lacewing (Chrysoperla carnea) is in the definitely good insects though because this delicate-looking creature with its gauzy wings is a predator of aphids. Lacewing larvae will help clear plants of aphid infestation.
So too will the larvae of hoverflies. They look a bit like small green or brown slugs but they are one of the best aphidkillers around. The adult flies look like small wasps with their striped bodies. They hover as their name suggests and they feed on nectar so attract them by growing plenty of flowers. Ladybirds and their larvae eat aphids in quantity too so they are very good insects to have around if you are lucky enough to have them. There are several species known to live on Tenerife but none of them are common. This is possibly due to the widespread use of insecticides which kill good and bad types of insects. The antlion (Myrmeleon alternans) is another useful insect because its larva mostly eats ants. It lies in wait for them in sandy and dry soil and grabs them with its formidable
Oleander aphids
mandibles. The adult antlion looks a bit like a damselfly with a thin body and long transparent wings. It is your friend! But perhaps you are wondering why it is good to have an insect that kills ants in your garden, well, let me tell you the reason. Many people do not realize but ants are one of the main reasons there are aphid, mealybug and scale insect infestations all over plants, bushes and trees. The ants farm these insect pests for their sticky honeydew and they distribute them around. This means that even if you successfully get rid of aphids on a prized plant the chances are that in a few days the pests will be back again. The ants transported them on to whatever you are growing. You can often see lines of ants going up and down the
stems of a plant of the trunk of a bush or tree. They tend their farmed ‘herds’ of aphids and mealybugs and collect the sticky secretions these pests make. Getting rid of ants then is a good idea. Try putting boric acid powder down for them or a commercial ant-killer. The ants take it back to their nest and in a few days they are all dead. Mealybugs form large groups all over many plants and trees and are white, fluffy and sticky, hence their name. The females crawl but many are carried by ants. Caterpillars can be a big problem. The green larvae of Noctuid moth species will eat
just about any plant you might have growing. I don’t like using insecticides so used to collect the caterpillars and feed them to my fish that gobbled them down. The small white butterfly (Pieris rapae) also has a green caterpillar and it feeds on any species of cabbage (Brassica) or nasturtiums (Tropaeolum majus). This white butterfly is on the gardener’s enemies list but most of the others seen on Tenerife are fine to have around. Butterflies are pretty insects and help beautify our gardens. We want to attract them and pollinators such as bees, bumblebees and hoverflies. The green shield bug (Nezara
viridula) is also a pretty insect with its leafy-green back and shape like a shield but it sucks the sap from plants. So too does the leaf-footed bug (Leptoglossus membranaceus). These are on the list of pests you don’t want in your garden. The assassin bug (Reduvius personatus) is a predator and eats pests but it can also eat insects you want around. So it is neither good nor bad but it loses points perhaps because it can also bite humans if it is picked up. Beware of the assassin bug!
Assassin Bug
How to get rid of mealybugs
Mealybugs are a big problem on Tenerife but how do you get rid of an infestation? The best way of stopping mealybugs getting out of hand and killing your plants is to stop them when there are not too many of the pests. Watch out for the crawlers that look like minute woodlice. These crawl up stems of plants and can come from under the compost or soil where the insects feed on the roots as well.
Mealybugs can be killed with insecticides of course, but if you want to be environmentally friendly try washing them off with water, brushing them off, spraying them with water with soap or washing up liquid in it, or simply squashing them with your fingers if you can stand doing this. Remember that ants farm mealybugs so destroying ant nests makes a lot of sense too.
Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.
He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

Aquarius 20 January to 18 February
Get a handle on joint financial matters. Mars encourages you to be proactive about sorting out debts or other money issues. If you need help, this is the time to talk to someone or research your options. Be careful about what you say or what you promise because your words could come back to haunt you around the time of the Lunar Eclipse. Don’t commit to anything unless you’re certain it’s for you. Keep receipts if you’re making a purchase over the weekend.

18 - minimum age for driving Licence
PROPOSAlS being considered by the Government mean that young drivers could have to wait until they are 18 before they are allowed to take their driving test. The move is aimed at cutting the number of people killed and injured in accidents on Britain’s roads.
Pisces 19 February to 20 March
Your love life and other relationships could get stirred up as Mars moves into Virgo. You might find that others seem more critical of you, so use this influence to clear the air. Watch out for mixed signals that could highjack a budding romance over the weekend. A Lunar Eclipse in your personal financial zone could bring money matters to a head. Try to sort out any problems quickly before they reach the point of no return. Fast action could save the day.
Aries 21 March to 19 April
Work and health issues could come into focus with things being stirred up in both areas early in the week. You might be more competitive at work and eager to motivate yourself into working out and getting fit. If things get to be too much for you, you might want to look for some excitement and a chance to explore new options. Be prepared for a Lunar Eclipse in your sign on Friday, which could bring a change of gears and perhaps encourage you to make a decision.
Taurus 20 April to 20 May
You might experience this week’s Lunar Eclipse as subtle compared to other people. Perhaps you’ll be the one they come to for help and support if they’re going through a crisis. Watch out for your dreams, too, as they could have some interesting guidance for you. Romantic options may show up as Mars moves into Virgo, which might encourage you to start having fun if you’ve been out of the loop for a while. Be careful over the weekend. Remember that all that glistens is not gold.
Gemini 21 May to 21 June
Your social life could go through a change when this week’s Lunar Eclipse stirs things up for you. Passionate opinions or fiery tempers could take their toll, or a friend might move away. As difficult as this may be, you might feel a sense of liberation and actually enjoy making new friends in the future. There’s action at home since you might feel motivated to clear out clutter, get things organized, and get on with any DIY or decorating projects.
Cancer 22 June to 22 July
Hold on to your hat this week because a powerful influence could shake up career and job matters and cause change out of the blue. You could feel quite emotional if news happens to be surprising or somehow shocking. Your communication zone may heat up, too, so you’ll be busy with e-mails, texts, calls, and lots of admin. It’s also a good time to connect with friends and family. Later in the week you could get mixed messages, especially if someone says one thing and does another.
Leo 23 July to 22 August
There could be powerful desires operating in your energy field, especially as Mars might encourage you to spend the cash. Slow down a bit if you can, as you might have unexpected expenses to deal with as well. Romance may be a highlight of the week, particularly if you’re not expecting it. A Lunar Eclipse in Aries could also catapult you into new territory. You might have no option but to face up to a challenge and deal with the consequences. However, you’ll also rediscover your inner strength.
Virgo 23 August to 22 September
Mars moves into your sign this week, bringing you an energy boost and giving you the motivation to move ahead with important plans. In fact, it’s a good time to start planning in general because a sound strategy can help you make more progress than anything else. Your sector of shared assets and joint finances may be affected by this week’s Lunar Eclipse, which could stir things up. Take action on any ongoing problems to remove lingering stress.
libra 23 September to 23 October
Mars powers into your spiritual zone this week and you may feel like going on retreat. You might want to relax and get back in touch with yourself after a busy few weeks on the social scene. However, a Lunar Eclipse could mean that things between you and a significant other get quite emotional. This might not be the best time to fall in love, so hold back if you can - at least until after this Eclipse phase has passed.
Scorpio 24 October to 21 November
Get ready to rock as current influences brighten up your social life. You may feel like being more proactive about making friends or joining a group or club. There’s plenty of time to get into the groove because this phase lasts for a few weeks. Watch your health, too, and lighten your schedule around the time of the October 18 Lunar Eclipse. There could be some unexpected changes on the work front that call for a decision.
Sagittarius 22 November to 21 December
There’s a chance to get cracking in your career, which might encourage you to find the job of your dreams, get that promotion, or connect with key people in the hope of getting some advice. Be proactive and you might be successful. Be careful, though, if you find yourself falling for someone around the time of the Lunar Eclipse. It may not work out for you in the long term. Wait at least a week or so before you make a move.
Capricorn 22 December to 19 January
Get ready for some adventures as Mars moves into your travel and exploration zone to encourage you to explore new horizons by journeying to a new place or taking up a course of study. There’s a cultural aspect to this, too, so you could be traveling and learning at the same time. There might be some turmoil on the home front that needs careful handling, as a Lunar Eclipse on October 18 could change the family dynamic or perhaps encourage a move.
Figures show more than a fifth of deaths in 2011 involved drivers aged 17 to 24, and around 10% of novice drivers are caught committing an offence within their probationary period. The Government-commissioned report by the Transport Research Laboratory suggests learner drivers will still be granted provisional licences at the age of 17. But they will have to complete a 12-month “learner stage” that would require drivers to clock up at least 100 hours of daytime and 20 hours of night-time supervised practice. For the first year, newly qualified drivers would be subject to a curfew between 10pm and 5am unless they were carrying a passenger aged over 30, as well as a ban on carrying anyone younger than that age if they were under it themselves. A Department for Transport spokesman said: “Young drivers drive around 5% of all the miles driven in Britain, but are involved in about 20% of the crashes where someone is killed or seriously injured. We are committed to improving safety for young drivers and reducing their insurance costs - that is why we are publishing a Green Paper later in the year setting out our proposals. This will include a discussion about how people learn to drive.” Stephen Glaister, director of the RAC Foundation, said: “Our own research shows that putting certain restrictions on young drivers allows them to rapidly build up livesaving experience in the safest possible way. “Putting a firm number on casualty reduction is hard because of the pick-and-mix approach to graduate licensing. But the evidence suggests that a full package of measures could reduce fatalities
by anything up to 60%. “We should all have an interest in preserving young drivers’ lives rather than exposing them to undue risk at the stage of their driving careers where they are most vulnerable. This is about ensuring their long-term safety and mobility, not curtailing it.” AA president Edmund King said although many of the proposals in the report had “merit”, he questioned some of the recommendations: “Road safety on the national curriculum is something we have long campaigned for and I am pleased to see it being recommended here,” he said. “However, at the extreme end this report could be seen as just recommending taking novice drivers off
the road by regulation and restriction rather than helping them develop the right attitudes and skills to provide them with the mobility they need. “Rather than compensating the proposed significant new restrictions through earlier access to the roads under supervision the authors propose delaying and extending the driving development process to the point where even some 30-year-olds will be restricted in whom they can carry as passengers. “This academic report has raised a number of options for debate and careful consideration. The question is how many of its recommendations will be acceptable to the Government and public at large.”

Halloween
There’s so much fun stuff you can make in the Kitchen for Halloween. Impress your guests at your party with just a few of these ideas. I was going to include a recipe for “Cat Litter Cake” but it just seemed too wrong-but whoever thought of it 10/10!
Bloody Baked Rats
Ingredients:
This is a fun, inexpensive and creepy. It is sort of mini meatloaf baked in tomato sauce that are shaped like rats with cheese in the middle. When you cut it open, gooey cheese will come oozing out. Garnished with a spaghetti tail and carrot ears… You can always use asparagus for the tail or even a good sized green bean!
500g Minced beef 1/2 onion, finely chopped 1 egg, beaten 200g dry bread crumbs I packet dried French onion soup mix
Seasoning 300g Cheddar cheese cubed 1 jar of your tomato pasta sauce Uncooked spaghetti, broken into fourths 1/2 carrot, cut into 1/8-inch thick slices 1 tablespoon frozen green peas
Method: Preheat the oven to 175°C. In a large bowl, combine the minced beef, onion, egg, bread crumbs, and French onion soup mix. Use your hands to mix until well blended. Split into about 8 or 10 portions (depending on how big you want the rats to be. Then mould the mixture around a cube of cheese like a meatball. Shape into a point at one end and lengthen the body a bit by rolling between your hands. Place your ‘’rat’’ into a shallow baking dish, and continue with the remaining meat. Insert pieces of uncooked spaghetti into the rounded end of the rats to make tails. Pour the pasta sauce over the rats in the dish and cover the dish with a lid or foil. Bake for 45 minutes in the preheated oven. Uncover the dish baste them with the tomato sauce and continue to bake for another 20 to 30 minutes, basting occasionally with the sauce to glaze the rats. While the rats finish baking, heat the peas and carrots in a small bowl in the microwave for about 15 seconds. Carefully transfer the rats to a serving platter so that their delicate tails don’t fall off. Press peas into the pointy end to make eyes, and insert carrot slices to make ears. Spoon some of the tomato sauce around them and serve on a bed of spaghetti or rice, coloured with green food colouring if you prefer!
Ear wax on a Swab These are so easy and quick, simply poke mini marshmallows on either end of a lollipop stick.. Gently dip each end of the “swab” in melted toffee sweets and lay to set on baking paper. Do not refrigerate.
Chocolate Armpit hair This has to be of my favourites… Break apart three large shredded wheat bundles into long strands so they have the appearance of hair, and set aside. In a medium sized saucepan, combine 3 tablespoons honey with 1 tablespoon brown sugar and 170g of chocolate chips and 2 tablespoons butter or margarine. Gently stir over medium heat until mixture is glossy and smooth. Remove from heat and gently stir in the shredded wheat. When thoroughly coated, scoop onto a piece of baking paper and break them into small equal portions. Set in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. Before serving, you can shake a little “talcum powder” (confectioner’s sugar) on them to freshen them up!
Used Plasters Simple and effective. Get some crackers and cut them into small pieces (to the size of a plaster). Cover the centre of them evenly with cream cheese and in the middle place a very small amount of ketchup. Layer them around a large plate or silver platter and use a box of plasters as the garnish in the centre! You can of course make little biscuits and use icing if you prefer!
Bones A pretzel with small white marsh mellows either end, dipped in melted white chocolate and allowed to set on a piece of baking paper!

Toyota Unveils New Mazda CX-5 Autopilot Car
The Mazda CX-5 has recently proved its popularity in a customer satisfaction survey and now customer feedback has prompted Mazda to introduce two new models the CX-5 compact SUV line-up the SE-L Lux and the SE-L Lux Nav. Both these new models are based on the 2.2 litre diesel 150pss 2WD SE-L.
Toyota has unveiled the next generation of cars featuring an autopilot system that will swerve to avoid collisions without drivers even touching the wheel.
The Automated Highway Driving Assist (AHDA) system lets vehicles communicate wirelessly to avoid running into each other while keeping the car in the middle of the road, regardless of how many twists and turns lie ahead. Although rivals Nissan and Google have been designing self-driving cars for a while, Toyota’s AHDA technology could be available to consumers in a few years. Toyota managing director Moritaka Yoshida said: “These advanced drivingsupport technologies prevent human errors, reduce driving stress and help drivers avert accidents, which has a big potential to reduce the number of traffic deaths.” While drivers will need to remain alert and in general control of their vehicle, the new technology lets them leave most of the work to the autopilot.
The latest collision-avoidance system has doubled the detection time of oncoming objects to four seconds from a previous two seconds, according to Toyota. The Japanese giant has already introduced the pre-collision braking assist system in its Lexus luxury sedan and plans to install it in other models by 2015, with the other technologies
to follow. “Cars with these technologies recognise the accelerating or slowing speed of those ahead, which also helps avoid traffic jams,” said project manager Mitsuhisa Shida. “They can wirelessly exchange data once every 0.1 seconds.” Toyota said the innovation will be especially helpful for older people.
New Car Steering Concept Could Save Lives A revolutionary new steering concept for cars could save countless lives. But how? As of now, a motorist might have to move his/her steering wheel up to two-and-a-half revolutions from lock to lock. This, of course, takes a considerable amount of time – time that is critical if the car has to move sharply to avoid a collision.
Furthermore, whereas motorists are taught to shuffle the wheel through their hands most instinctively favour the arm over arm technique in tricky situations. This can be fiddly and it is easy to lose track of where the front wheels are pointing. Also, a driver that applies to much lock relative to the vehicle’s speed might face several problems. The car, for example, could under-steer which is the phenomenon whereby it runs wide on a corner as the front tyres loose grip.
Even more hazardous, it might over-steer as the rear tyres lose traction then spin out of control. Both these problems can be resolved by a top-notch driver but the techniques are beyond the capabilities of the average motorist. Plus, of course, in extreme cases fast steering relative to speed can cause a vehicle to roll over onto its roof. The new steering concept – if it is successfully trialled and installed on production vehicles – should address many or all of these concerns. How? Because it would be a yoke-like
device that only requires a quarter turn in either direction from the upright position. This would enable the motorist to keep his/her hands in the same spot on the steering wheel which would sidestep the arm over arm issue. It should also help the vehicle turn quicker if it faces an unexpected, sudden, hazard. Furthermore, a computer would record how far the steering device is turned, the speed it is turned, and the vehicle’s velocity. It would then determine how far the front wheels should move to perform the manoeuvre without jeopardising the vehicle’s stability. It should therefore prevent the motorist turning to fast and rolling the car, etc. This concept will now be tested to establish whether it is safe, reliable, effective and intuitive. If successful, it could be fitted to forthcoming production vehicles relatively easily. However, it might take some time before motorists embrace such a radical change to a fundamental system.
Peter Allibon, Sales Director, Mazda UK said “many potential Mazda customers have expressed an interest in being able to acquire a CX-5 with a sunroof and leather trim without having to purchase a rangetopping Sport model. Now, responding to that latent demand, we are adding two models to our Mazda CX-5 range, based on our most popular and economical powertrain, the 2.2-litre diesel 150ps with 2WD and six-speed manual transmission. The premium is an extremely modest price for an upgraded specification which would cost more than 3,000 Euros with some rival brands.” The latest Mazda CX-5 is equipped with a range of breakthrough technologies including Smart City Brake Support which is standard across the Mazda CX-5 range and uses a laser sensor which is mounted at the top of the windscreen to detect a
vehicle or obstacle in front of the CX-5 when driving at speeds up to 20mph. Other safety highlights include front and rear parking sensors, Dynamic Stability Control with Traction Control System, Hill Hold Assist, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, dual front and front side airbags and front and rear curtain airbags, driver and passenger and rear seat audible seatbelt reminder warning plus a fantastic reversing camera. It is no surprise that the CX-5 achieved its high ranking in the survey for the in-car technology, ease of driving and ride quality categories. The two new models feature the addition of a powered tilt-andslide glass sunroof, full leather trim in Black or Stone (no cost option), a six-way power adjustable driver’s seat and heated front seats with three-stage temperature settings.

The Paradise BBC 1 - Sunday - 20:00 - 21:00 When Moray jilted Katherine and chose Denise, lord Glendenning’s vengeance was swift. he took ownership of The Paradise and Moray was cast out. for a year, Denise and Moray were separated. Moray worked in Paris while The Paradise struggled. A year later, and The Paradise is struggling to survive without its charismatic owner, Moray. In the wake of the scandal, and for reasons that remain a mystery to her, Denise was permitted to stay at The Paradise. Ripped apart the moment their love was declared, Denise has only Moray’s letters and her brave determination to help her survive. Meanwhile,
Lord Glendenning and Katherine vanished from the city. Lord Glendenning has instructed his agent to sell The Paradise and Dudley is devastated when his last hope to invigorate sales ends in grief. Now unforeseen forces bring Moray back and the lovers are reunited. But their elation is fleeting, as the shock arrival of Katherine and her new husband Tom Weston sends everybody spinning. Displaying his renowned enigmatic flare, Moray controversially shuts the doors of The Paradise for a day, hoping to create a fever of gossip in which to launch a grand sale of exotic goods from his travels. However, when the grand opening is threatened by sabotage, Denise’s suspicions lead her to an uncomfortable discovery.

Ronnie’s Animal Crackers BBC 1 - Friday - 19:30 - 21:00 In the final episode, a resolution to Ronnie’s own troubled dog’s story?
The Secretary from the Kennel Club, Caroline, returns to visit Ronnie and his wife, Anne, to reveal the results from the DNA swab she took from his dog Baz. The results will hopefully show something in Baz’s bloodline that might help explain why he’s been in such a state, and point a way forward... We meet Donna, one of the few people in the country authorised to look after bats at home. Since 1997, Donna has been running a bat hospital and rescue service, dedicating her life to these endangered creatures. We follow her side-kicks Graham and Ross as they go on one of a hundred
emergency bat rescue call-outs they have every year. A little pipistrelle bat is rescued after being mauled by a cat, but will it survive? The first and only woman to have won One Man And His Dog is sheepdog breeder and trainer Katy. That was back in 1990. Katy still has the fire in her belly to want to win sheepdog trials, and she has high hopes for her young 15-month-old dog Zac. We see her as she puts him through his paces, hopeful of winning a place in the national sheepdog trials. Zac is feisty, but he also has a tendency to do something that will earn him instant disqualification if he can’t curb his instincts in a competition.

OCD Ward
ITV 1 - Monday - 21:00 - 22:00 Springfield university hospital in South london has Britain’s only 24/7 unit dedicated to the treating of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
For the first time ever, the hospital has granted cameras exclusive access to its OCD ward, to join the patients and staff fighting to beat it. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) affects nearly one million people in the UK and Springfield is home to 10 of the country’s most severe sufferers, where they live side-by-side for up to six months in the hope that they can learn to live a normal life. OCD Ward looks at the impact the condition has on both the patients and their family relationships and the
difficulty in treating it. The documentary focuses on a young man who has been unable to hug his parents for a number of years, a woman who cannot have contact with her grandchildren, a man with a fear of germs who is using increasingly abrasive chemicals on his body and a woman plagued by horrific thoughts of bad things happening to her loved ones. Dr Andra Ion, Specialist Psychiatrist at Springfield, explains the frustration experienced by those with the condition: ‘People with OCD always realise that what they are scared of is absolutely nonsense. They find a way to alleviate this discomfort and anxiety by performing a ritual.’

Bale in Slipped disc denial
SPANISh newspaper Marca has claimed that the world record signing Gareth Bale from Tottenham hotspur had suffered a slipped disc that could require surgery. But Real Madrid has insisted this was ‘completely false’. A statement from Madrid read: “In response to the information that the newspaper Marca has published today regarding the player Gareth Bale, Real Madrid would like to state the following:
1. The information published, claiming that the player has a slipped disc on the L5-S1 vertebrae and a bulge on two others, is completely false. 2. The player does not have a slipped disc, as the club’s medical services stated clearly to the newspaper before the information was published. Surprisingly, the version the doctors offered this media outlet on Thursday 10 October has been omitted. 3. The player Gareth Bale has a small chronic disc bulge, which is extremely common
among football players and by no means prevents him from carrying out his professional activity normally.” Bale has been troubled by injury since his move to Spain. The Wales star has played in just once match for Madrid, his debut against Villarreal in which he scored on 14 September. He has made just two more substitute appearances, one in La Liga and one in the UEFA Champions League, with the last of those coming in the league defeat to Atletico Madrid on 28 September.

SAChIN Tendulkar has announced his retirement from international cricket after making his 200th Test appearance next month. The India legend issued a statement through the BCCI confirming he will call time on his glittering career following the second Test against the West Indies, which starts on November 14.
The record-breaking batsman will become the first player in history to take the field for 200 Test matches before ending his 24-year international career: “All my life, I have had a dream of playing cricket for India,” he said. “I have been living this dream every day for the last 24 years. It’s hard for me to imagine a life without playing cricket because it’s all I have ever done since I was 11 years old. “It’s been a huge honour to have represented my country and played all over the world. I look forward to playing my 200th Test Match on home soil as I call it a day. I thank the BCCI for everything over the years and for permitting me to move on when my heart feels it’s time. I thank my family for their patience and understanding. Most of all, I thank my fans and well-wishers who through their prayers and wishes have given me the strength to go out and perform at my best.” Former Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, who is still the leading wickettaker in both Tests and ODIs, paid tribute to a player with whom he had many battles over the years: “I think it’s a bad day for Indian cricket, world cricket as well,” he told cricinfo.com. Fellow cricketing legend, Australia’s
ONE year ago Mark Webber stormed down to the lotus paddock base at Suzuka to bawl out Romain Grosjean for ruining his race with a silly collision on the first lap, telling him he wasn’t going to get to stay around in f1 if he didn’t control himself better in the car.
Shane Warne, tweeted: “Sachin was easily the best player over the last 20 years & will be remembered as one of the all time greats! Truly an amazing player.” Former India captain Sourav Ganguly told NDTV: “At the age of 14, all he knew was batting and he would bat all day; the coach would actually have to pull him out of the nets. “I think that’s the reason he has been successful. It’s not just the talent he was born with, but what he did with it.” England batsman Kevin Pietersen wrote on Twitter: “Sachin #10dulkar - Undisputed Champion of Cricket! #SachinTheGreat.” Known as the Little Master, the 40-year-old was just 16 when he made his Test debut against Pakistan in 1989. Tendulkar introduced himself to the
world stage in England the following summer with a number of superb innings, including his maiden century at Old Trafford. He holds almost every major batting record in Test cricket, scoring a unprecedented 15,837 runs at an average in excess of 53 - which is over 2,000 runs more than his nearest rival, Australia’s Ricky Ponting. Last March he became the first player to score 100 international centuries, before announcing his retirement from one-day cricket to focus on his form in the five-day game. But his form has been inconsistent over the last three years and he has posted only one three-figure score since becoming the first man to hit 50 Test centuries against South Africa in 2010.
Webber subsequently referred to him as “the first-lap nutcase”. One year on Webber and Grosjean finished second and third after a terrific fight for virtually the whole of the race. This comes on the back of a super-competitive and consistent second half of the season for Grosjean and it’s clear Lotus’s former wild man has matured into one of the best drivers on the grid. It has taken huge mental strength as well as a brutally honest re-assessment of himself. Just nine races ago, when he was repeatedly bouncing off the Monaco scenery in between going very fast, he looked as if he’d learned nothing from the disasters of 2012. It began to seem as if he was incapable of learning, and there was no apparent progression. But something seemed to click with him in the aftermath of that and since then he’s barely put a wheel wrong, yet has regained the sear-
ing speed of his 2012 peaks. Into the first half of this season he was invariably behind Lotus team-mate Kimi Raikkonen in qualifying and race. In the first eight races up to Silverstone he was out-qualified seven times. In the seven since then, he has outqualified Raikkonen five times. “The tyre change that came after Silverstone definitely seemed to swap them around,” says the team’s on-track chief Alan Permane. “Romain is just quicker over one lap than Kimi on these tyres, yet on the previous tyres it was the other way around.” In the last two races that confidence has just fed on itself; Grosjean has been quick enough to take only prime tyres in Q1, this giving him two sets of options for Q3. By contrast, Raikkonen has felt the need to use up a set of options to ensure he got through Q1, leaving him relying on just a single run on options in Q3. This has just increased the natural pace advantage Grosjean already holds. In Korea he had pulled 25 seconds out over Raikkonen in the race but this was neutralised by a safety car and when Grosjean made a small mistake on the restart, Raikkonen was able to pounce to take second place away from him. Grosjean was upset about it in

T
he son of 1970s F1 race driver Guy Edwards has been killed in Australia after the car he was travelling in smashed into a race track wall and burst into flames. Sean Edwards, 26, died instantly while the driver is in intensive care with life-threatening injuries following the tragedy. Edwards recently coached drivers on the film set of Rush, a biographical sports drama film about the 1976 Formula One season and the rivalry between drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda. He also played his father in some scenes, including when he famously pulled Lauda from a burning car wreck in Germany in 1976. London-born Edwards, who lived in Monaco, was in the passenger seat when the Porsche 966 crashed at Willowbank’s Queensland Raceway, just west of Brisbane just after 11:30am local time. Local emergency services spent two hours extracting the driver - a 20-year-old man from Brisbane from the burning wreckage. He was eventually airlifted to hospital and is currently in intensive care in a critical condition. According to Brisbane Times, the raceway’s website stated the track

was being used by a company that offers ‘hot laps’ in a Porsche. Mr Edward’s family and girlfriend Laura have not yet commented on his death. The couple’s Twitter pages’ suggest they became engaged in the summer - Laura posted a photo of a diamond ring on the social networking site next to the words: ‘Thank you #diamonds #areagirls #bestfriend.’ On October 8, Mr Edwards told his Twitter fans he would soon be arriving in Brisbane for two days of coaching: `Time to hit Queensland Raceway today, should be fun, hope there aren’t too many kangaroos like at Bathurst!’’ he wrote on October 12. On his Facebook page he wrote: `First time to Aus, have heard great thing so looking forward to my two days there!’’ Mr Edwards had enjoyed a suc-
cessful season, featuring victories in the Nurburgring and Dubai 24 Hours as well as wins in the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany and in the GTC class of the American Le Mans Series. British former Formula One driver

even as he is talking, a clarity of thought and of being on top of the job is apparent that was never there before. What will Ferrari be making of this? The man signed to run alongside Alonso is being consistently out-performed by his current team-mate. Alonso in turn is being regularly outqualified by his team mate, the
departing Felipe Massa, though he invariably still beats him on race day. Nothing stands still in F1, not technology, not the competitive shape and not driver performance. That is an inherent part of its fascination. Grosjean is part of a refreshing wind of change that the established guys are being forced to accept.
Fellow professional race car driver, German Timo Glock, also tweeted his shock about the loss of ‘such a nice and talented guy’. ‘Big lose [sic] for the whole motorsport world,’ he said.

the car, and afterwards pointed out that they have internal rules about not fighting on track and that he several times had stood aside when instructed to allow Raikkonen a better chance of attacking the leader. He was disappointed that when the situation was reversed Raikkonen was not told to stand aside. That reflects a new-found confidence - and

Emergency crews battled to save his life. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead. Connor - thought to be from Scotland - was killed in the first race of the European Quad of Nations championships in Cingoli, near Ancona. He had arrived at the weekend race event last Friday with team mates Paul Holmes and Luke Cooper and they had been among the favourites to win. Because of funding, only a small team had been entered in the race and earlier this month an appeal had gone out for sponsorships via quad bike websites. Besides Connor, an Italian rider, Filippo Rondinini, 27, was also injured in the pile-up and was taken to hospital but his condition was not described as serious. Officials cancelled the event as soon as the teenager’s death was confirmed and a minute’s silence was held in his memory. A message was read out from his father, saying: “My son Connor died taking part in a sport he loved. He was representing the colours of his nation.” Fans applauded and fellow riders gathered at the spot where the accident happened to hold a prayer vigil.
A police spokesman said they were investigating the accident to establish whether all safety procedures had been implemented and to decide if criminal charges would be brought if they were breached. An entry on Quad Scotland’s Facebook page read: “Connor Smith RIP. Deeply saddened and shocked to learn today of the tragic loss of Connor Smith, our 2013 Champion; a great friend, committed competitor and huge inspiration to quad riders young and old, in Scotland and beyond. He achieved so much in his short life, and had so much still to give. Our thoughts and sympathies go to Bill, Jackie, family and friends.”

the SportS SCene By Colin Kirby
AT 0-1 down the new look scoreboard froze, went off, and then restarted with the score back at 0-0, if only CD Tenerife could reboot the season so easily. Mallorca were there for the taking but more poor finishing from Tenerife gave them no chance of punishing a defence that has been as leaky as a tea bag this season. howls of anguish poured from the 9,960 crowd as the single goal defeat and another sending off left Tenerife second from bottom. FIFA haven’t yet introduced consolation points for hitting the woodwork so continuously finding the posts or the bar has to be seen as bad aim rather than bad luck. Raul Llorente was the first to rattle a post this week, Mallorca seemed content to sit back and only ventured over the half way line when former home favourite Alfaro pushed up. Visiting goalie Mino looked nervous and just managed to scramble away an Aridane effort, he had a brief worry as Tenerife put

medal Hope for Lorenzo’s fighting farewell A TAlENT for the Vietnamese martial art of Qwan Ki Do has seen lorenzo Conbraschi collect a haul of medals for Spain but he hopes to bow out of competition in Switzerland with a few more in the European Championships on 25 & 26 October. Born in Romania, Lorenzo moved to Los Cristianos in 2002, and two years later he began competing for Spain. “ It’s been a real pleasure becoming Spanish champion in 2004, 2005, and 2007 and competing at the Worlds, back in Romania in 2007 and in Morocco in 2011, I missed the last Europeans but as I turn 40 soon this will be my last chance at the top level.” Being one of Spain’s most far flung competitors adds an extra challenge. “There were three of us went from here to the selection trials in Valencia a few months ago and we all made the grade

but Switzerland is such a costly place I’m the only one going.” Lorenzo will join up with the other 11 male and 3 female squad members in Madrid before flying to the host city of Wettingen. There are three categories for sparring, team, and an open technical section, Lorenzo is hopeful of a bronze in the technical but
warns that Romania are the best in the world at the moment. Lorenzo should be in peak condition, as well as training he runs self defence classes at the IES Los Cristianos school, if you want to learn some tips for the master or can help to sponsor his trip to Switzerland call him on 646 641 676.
the ball in the goal but an early offside call against Aridane was dead on and kept the sides level. Ximo was starting to test the Tenerife defence, Bruno did well to rob him and clear the ball as he cut in from the left on the half hour. Suso chanced his foot with a shot that Mino parried but he wasn’t hounded enough to force a follow up. Stalemate at half time for the two coaches desperate for a win but former Tenerife hero Oltra must have felt the happier. Suso was in the thick of it again shortly after the break, his enthusiastic appeal for a penalty fell on deaf ears, another correct decision from the ref – it’s a while since we have seen two good calls in one home game. Disaster was lurking around
the corner waiting to mug Tenerife and it came in the form of goalie Sergio Aragoneses. The lively Thomas moved in from the right and put in a speculative low cross, it was destined for Sergio’s hands but he spilled it and Gerard had the simplest of tap ins. Tenerife tried to fight back, Ayoze is still the big hope he is young enough to get even better and he never gave up, but blasted one too straight and into the keepers body. Showing tenacity and skill he followed that by getting in behind the keeper and putting the ball across the goal from an acute angle, it danced slowly along the line before bobbling off the post to be cleared by a startled defender. Rivero and Aday had been
brought off the bench; they added a bit more urgency, especially Aday who made more inroads down the left than Chechu could muster. Time for another clanger, this time Moyano, already on a booking, made a stupid wild tackle on a player in no mans land, out came another yellow and he was gone along with any lingering chance of salvaging the game. The old discipline problems that used to haunt the club are seeping back in, that’s four sendings off this season. That’s another selection headache for coach Alvaro Cervera for the away game at Ponferradina this week. These self inflicted wounds can’t be blamed on lady luck; she skipped town with Santa Claus and the Loch Ness monster years ago.

Choppy Waters But CD Marino Hold Second Spot
Balduino
Island hopping doesn’t seem to suit CD Marino, their only other defeat of the season came at Mensajero in La Palma, then last weekend they made the trip to Gran Canaria and crashed 4-1 to Vecindario.
It was not a memorable day for the Las Americas club, a seventh minute penalty by Angel Suarez gave them a jolt but they recovered well thanks to a Balduino strike after 13 minutes. All the drama happened in the second half on the artificial pitch
as home player Ruyman banged in two quick goals within 15 minutes of the restart. Balduino made a premature exit with a red card and that effectively sealed their fate, Aythami wrapped up the scoring near the end. Thankfully CD

Tenerife B did Marino a favour by beating Mensajero 1-0 to leave the blues nicely settled in second spot. This Sunday Lanzarote are the visitors to Las Americas at noon, it’s just eight euros for adults and free for kids.
It’s rush hour on the Tenerife rally circuit, last weekend the Subida A Tamaimo drew the crowds to the west coast. The 5.5 km uphill route was packed out as the speedsters fought for supremacy. Local driver Enrique Cruz won the Turismo class in his Porsche 997 GT3 and Gran Canarian Julian Falcon was top dog in the general barquetas races in his Silver Car S2.
This weekend the action switches to the Arona to La Escalona rally with 35 cars taking part. The first leg will be on Saturday evening from 7pm as they make their uphill dash, then on Sunday morning at 9am they start to make the decisive runs with presentations due to be made at 1.45 pm. The hot favourite is Javi Villa in his BRC B49. Looking ahead the big event is the 39th Rally Isla Tenerife on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd November with the starting point and pits area back near Plaza de Espana in Santa Cruz.
After a summer of anticipation the new ACB basketball season arrived with a few surprises for CB Canarias. At home to Obradoiro they were 20 points ahead but a late rally saw the visitors take the final quarter 13-25 before going down 76-74.
Even the attendance was a bit below par, last year the
La Laguna team were regularly pulling in 4,000 but they opened this time with 3,000. Despite these minor upsets there was plenty to hint at another good season in Spain’s elite league, Blagota Sekulic continued his rich vein of friendly form with 23 points and was well supported by Nico Richotti on 14 and Saul Blanco on 18. This week it’s an away game at Zaragoza.
