Fisherman Lost at Sea Off Garachico By janetanscombe.com
eMeRGenCY services have been searching for a fisherman who fell off his boat off the coast of Garachico, with search and rescue helicopters added to the emergency services efforts throughout the afternoon, at nightfall, they were halted for the night, with the search being continued by lifeboats and Geas Guardia Civil. A full search resumed at first light to con-
tinue looking for the fisherman. He had gone out with other boats but had become separated, and was lost to sight. When the other fishermen caught sight of his boat again, it was empty. The search and rescue attempt involved 2 Salvamento Marítimo boats and a helicopter, Guardia Civil Submarine Activities Special Unit and land units, and Policía Local. At the time of going to print, the fisherman, said to be 42 years old and from La Matanza, the search for him continues into its 3rd day.
Fruit Loot
By dianamcglone.com thRee men in their early 30s have been charged with stealing fruit from farms in tacoronte and el sauzal and then selling it on the black to owners of bars and restaurants La Laguna and santa Cruz de tenerife.
The gang concentrated mainly on avocados, which the suspects sold at
prices varying between 1 Euro 50 and 2 Euros per kilo, depending on fluctuations in price of the legal market. According to the Guardia Civil the defendants committed at least five robberies, but could be also responsible for many more, collecting between 20 and 50 kilos of fruit including avocados, lemons and oranges on each haul. The Guardia Civil Group against countryside crime (Roca) says this type of crime is on the increase due to the current unemployment situation and economic crisis.

CONTINuED FROM PaGE 1
eL Medano is in the privileged position to be the potential headquarters in a school that could become a world leader in teaching windsurfing and kitesurfing.
The main opposition party in the southern consistory, Canary Coalition, has filed a motion proposing the creation of a municipal school of windsurfing and kitesurfing in El Medano. Nationalists consider that Granadilla de Abona has the two most important natural resources for the practice of windsurfing and kitesurfing, a wonderful coastline with pleasant temperatures all year round, and wind. These two elements cannot be bought or manufactured, like buildings or sports equipment can, and Granadilla de Abona has them. These natural features bring thousands of people from around the world to visit the town to practice their favorite sports, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Today, the wind and the beaches are the engine driving the local tourism industry. The existing hotel industry in the town is focused mostly this type of customer, as well as stores that specialize in specific clothing and equipment for the practice of these activities. These water sports are a cornerstone of economic activity in the coastal village of El Medano. These are the natural factors that have determined that El Medano has been designated by the PWA (Professional Windsurfers Association) to host their events counting towards the World Championship Windsurfing. These trials, which were rescued after the Socialist Party inexplicably left them forgotten for years, are vital to the economic and commercial revitalization of our town, and that keep El Medano on the world podium, as an ideal place to practice this discipline, thereby adding incentives to our tourism industry. Canary Coalition understands that El Medano has the natural resources essen-
tial for the practice of these sports. It features public spaces and buildings that support and promote these sports and leisure activities that bring us both business and a higher tourist level. We must add to the immense positive effort, carried out in the previous mandate, of providing El Medano with spaces for public services. EL M3, located near the pier, is a clear example of the work and willpower, and above all offers a unique opportunity
to create a range of sports, without the restrictions of space or budget. Today, many of the world leaders in this sport live in Granadilla and Abona, athletes visit us from all over the world for our resources, but the island does not facilitate entry into these sports practices for our own citizens, as is done with other disciplines. Therefore, Canary Coalition believes it is essential to act accordingly and correct this situation.
To The Editor, Recently, myself and brother in law suffered the sad loss of a much loved wife and sister, only 2 days into a 4 month holiday. Being at a loss as what to do, we took advice and contacted the British Consulate; they took up our case and dealt with it, with the utmost compassion and professionalism. May we, through your columns, thank the consulate for the fantastic work they
did, with special thanks to Penelope Gomez, who dealt with our case. May we also remind your readers that the Consulate is there to help you and will help you. We are back in Tenerife as our loved one would wish, may we also thank our friends for the kindness and support during our sad loss. Yours, sincerely, Mr. C. Cole (husband) Mr. B. Sumner (brother).

NEWS ON THE ROCK
the Canary Coalition spokesman in the city of Candelaria, Nazareth Diaz, has denounced the poor state of municipal roads. For the nationalist councilor “the poor state of the pavement in evident in all districts to the point that Candelaria going to end up being known as the town of potholes.” In this sense, “and by way of example,” Diaz said points as Mayor Antonio Hernández Street up to the junction with the Llano de la Rosa Street in Barranco Hondo, the Lomo Caballo Street in Malpais or Jump Street Pastor Araya evidencing that the City is failing to shoulder their responsibility in the maintenance of roads. In this sense, the councilor said that the most important is the quality of service that the residents are happy with it and for the City provide this service effectively and efficiently “something that unfortunately is not happening for suffering candelarieros and visitors.”

Last Wednesday a huge emergency operation took place for an air crash at TFS Reina Sofía airport. Ambulances, fire engines, police, the full emergency plan was in operation … but it was an exercise. At least we can be reassured that everything will be in place if the worst were to come to the worst, and there were to be a real plane crash rather than a simulation. the Gran hotel Bahia del Duque is 20 years old this month. On November 20, 1993, the Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque in Adeje opened its doors for the first time and since then the flagship of Adeje has become the trademark of a five-star destination. The construction of the hotel was the result of a group of businessmen and tobacco workers in the tourism business who had a strong commitment to quality tourism in the South of Tenerife. The initial investment was eight billion pesetas (more than 48 million euros) at the time, some called this kind of commitment to quality and luxury crazy however now they are trying to imitate. La troya sunbeds Are Illegal. Arona Environment Councilman, Antonio Sosa, recognizes that the sunbeds and beach umbrellas currently provided on La Troya beach are illegal. The mayor said that the company is carrying out the activity without having the operating agreement in place. The City Council yesterday held an extraordinary plenary session in which the sunbeds and parasols were discussed. Following the meeting a notice will appear in the Official Gazette of the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife requesting companies interested in providing this activity in Los Cristianos to tender. around 200 people in just a few days have formed a pressure group which they say is already working to prevent the new harbour. The group says that similar plans were around in 2007 but were rejected by Adeje Ayuntamiento, and that with the worsening economic situation over the past five or so years, there is even less reason to proceed now. Ashotel and Puertos de Tenerife have received support, however, from the Tenerife Cabildo, which sees the possibility of generating the very economic benefits that locals say are lacking. Miguel Galindo, the councillor who is at the head of the new pressure group ” No al puerto de La Enramada” says that those in opposition will not support plans to turn Adeje into the “new Miami”. To me, there seems to be an inherent contradiction between this stance and the group’s argument that the economy is too poor and cannot be improved this way. If there is any chance that Adeje would indeed be a “new Miami”, then that would involve considerable economic benefit … and so opposition would be opposition for opposition’s sake … negotiators from the governments of the European Union (EU), Spain and Canary Islands have agreed to delay the implementation of the new Economic and Fiscal Regime (REF) for the Archipelago, which will now not come into force until January 2015. It was also decided that the amendment of the Tax on Imports and Deliveries of Goods ( AIEM ) will apply from 1 July next year .The agreement reached on Monday, November 25 , allows for a further year of negotiators to update the REF, whose fiscal and economic purpose is intended to be linked to job creation. The unique economic and fiscal regime of the Canary Islands, which includes the multi-tier IGIC sales tax system, is believed by local politicians to be crucial as it helps to offset the disadvantages the islands suffer as an insular and remote region. Once thrashed out, the new regime will be valid until 2020 .
FeRRY passengers between the seven Canary Islands will soon be greeted by giant majestic whales and dolphins riding a wave of colour. the final phase of the harbour wall upgrade in Los Cristianos has just begun with 12 students from the La Laguna University faculty of fine arts devoting a year to add an artistic finish.
The old mural had been peeling and flaking during its 10 years, so when a million Euro project was put in place to strengthen the harbour wall it seemed the perfect time to give it a new paint job. A third of the worlds species of whales and dolphins either live or pass through Canarian waters so a new homage to these creatures seemed highly appropriate. The old wall was cleaned down and covered with new prefab sections while the Tenerife port authority held a contest to design the new look for the students to paint. Paula (in picture) was
the winner and now with her team of students fresh from completed courses they have a one year contract to transform the port. Working week days from 9 am to 4 pm they will cover the 2,000 square metres of concrete canvas filling in a numbered template that has been drawn onto the wall. If you are passing through give them a wave or have a chat as you admire their brush strokes.

From Canary Island To Prize Island

By Marc Craig
Last week I got to watch my old partner in crime, Mea Deen, on the tellybox, not only that, it wasn’t a section of crimestoppers!
we supported Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet), Aswad, Go West, Jason Donovan and many more at the Castle San Miguel 80’s reunions, we performed at numerous 1830 reunions back in the UK, amongst many other things We moved to our new home at Vivo back in 2009, and I’ve been here ever since, but following the birth of their first baby boy Harvey, Mea and his partner Donna decided to up sticks back to the UK in 2010, where he joined a popular touring band named Envy. We still speak constantly, and he came over to be best man at my wedding in September 2012, but not long before that, I received a phone call from my old singing partner telling me all about this show he was going to be on called “Prize Island”, after a tip off about the auditions from Tenerife resident Kelly Messent. Prize Island is an ITV game show, presented by Alexander Armstrong and Emma Willis and was filmed on Bazaruto Island off the coast of Mozambique in October 2012. I could just repeat what read on Wikipedia about the format but I thought it might be more fun to relay what happened in Mea’s episode, thus explaining the concept! Following a brief introduction from our hosts, we watch the arrival by boat of our 4 teams, 2 persons in each, all with existing relationships. Mea and George introduce each other as best friends of 25 years, “a bril-
If you’re a resident who has lived on the island for more than a few years, or a tourist who has regularly revisited the island between 1999 and 2010, you may be familiar with the name “Wildboyz”. The Wildboyz were founded back in spring 1999, when we decided to leave cold, wet England and the band we played in together (FOXX), and embarked on a new life in sunny Tenerife. We were resident in Leonardo’s for 10 years, but also worked for all the major tour operators,
Tackling Truancy

Adeje will be the headquarters for the “Forum To Improve Coexistence and Prevention of Truancy” organised by the Tenerife Cabildo, the University of La Laguna and the eight South Tenerife councils.
The forum will work to unite different initiatives within the education community to offer a specialised service to benefit students in each zone. The campaign will also call upon support from the regional department of education
and FECAM, the Canarian Towns Federation. There will be two classroom sessions each of five hours duration and another online session of 25 hours. The classroom sessions will take place in the Adeje cultural centre on November 28th 2013 and January 22nd 2014 from 12 midday to 2pm, and among those in attendance will be those involved in truancy, education, coexistence, youth and citizen participation programmes. There will be participation from members of the public and teachers from the primary and secondary cycles as well
as heads of schools. Those involved in working with families and young people are also invited to take part. Adeje education councillor Andrés Pérez Ramos remarked that “in Adeje we are constantly looking for solutions that won’t just benefit our own borough, but society as a whole. The creation of this forum will allow us improve the extent of attention we are paying to students and, importantly, will help us create a network with those working directly within the field of promoting coexistence. Pérez Ramos added that it was important to work
together in this regard; establishing joint criteria so that needs could be better met. He also said that it wasn’t the first time that councils from South Tenerife were working together for a common educative aim. “This is something we do frequently as we all understand that our mission is to find workable viable solutions to the different problems that arise when tackling school truancy and promoting harmonious coexistence in our schools and centres”. To take part in these training days (which will be held in Spanish) you must register via email, absentismoescolarcae@gmail.com. liant singer” and a “hell of a dancer”!
Round 1.
The teams have to position cogs of various sizes to create a gear system which lowers a net containing an entire kitchens worth of appliances. The boys are almost beaten before they begin, but manage to scrape through, Mea’s opening shout of “get the biggun” prompts Emma Willis to observe “no tactics they’re just throwing them on!” After, Mea admits “we were rubbish”!
Round 2.
Called “Swelterweight”, the teams squeeze wet towels into a container while wearing boxing gloves. Highest water line wins a whole bunch of gym equipment, the boys miss out but get second place! No eliminations.
Round 3
“Shipwreck” is an obstacle course in, and on the water, the teams race across the course grabbing tickets, bags in a package holiday themed race, and the team that makes it to the airline seats in the least amount of time win a holiday to Mauritius. Our boys make first place, even though at one point they almost manage to leave their bag behind, at this point I’m screaming at the TV “Mea, you forgot the bag!” Exciting stuff!
Round 4
Coconut Grove. The 2 re-
maining teams, try to catch airborne coconuts with barcodes that relate to prizes, in a big wicker basket. At the end of the round having caught 9 coconuts for 9 prizes, the boys collapse in a heap as they’re told they’re through to the final!
The Final
At Bluefish Bay, Mea gets to show off his marksman skills to net them every one of the 5 prizes available in a shooting mini game! You could see his inner James Bond come to the surface! At last, the final, 5 tombs, with 1 of 5 possible answers above each tomb door, and behind the one with the correct answer, a brand new car with £50,000 in the boot! After several more mini games to try to reduce the amount of incorrect answers, the boys finally have to answer one question, using one of the answers above the tomb doors, to win the car. The question; which of the 5 answers has never been an Olympic sport? Unfortunately the boys picked tug of war instead of the correct karate, so they didn’t get the car or cash, but they kept all their prizes and, as Mea commented, it was an “unbelievable experience”, well done boys, and, just a thought, but if you don’t want that holiday...??

This week I was contacted by Miss Francesca Astley Morton via our Tenerife Weekly facebook page, detailing how, while driving back from Teide with a friend, they came across a “Podenco dog in such an awful state”. Francesca spent; “3 hours of frantically phoning refuges and constant-
ly posting her photo to facebook, which caused a huge stir and following.” Eventually they received help from “a lovely lady called Karen and her partner Rich”, who drove her to Granadilla to the dog refuge centre Aktion Tier Accion where Marian and her team of vets raced to begin treat-

The Museum of Nature and Man, has welcomed the presentation of a Web Portal on the Natural History of Macaronesia. www.macaronesian.org is a digital tool for consultation, whose contents are available in Spanish, Portuguese and English. Macaronesia is a modern collective name for several groups of islands in the North Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Europe and Africa. They belong to three countries: Portugal, Spain, and Cape Verde. In the words of the Minister of Museums, Amaya Conde, “this is the first time to be found in an online platform, compiled documents and materials on the natural heritage of this set of islands”. He explains that “after several years of continuous work, finally comes to light this ambitious project has had the participation of a large team.” Amaya Conde adds that “this new platform includes a multimedia encyclopedia and a virtual library with over two thousand entries that contain text files, audio, video and pictures on various topics related to the natural history of this region.” “This is - assertion of a search tool at various levels, able to discriminate thematic and geographic areas, which provides precise and concrete results.” Scientific and technical
professionals and the Museum of Nature and Man have advised all those who have contributed in some way to the collection, digitization and documentation production, informing the web designers and developers, as well as the Broadcasting and Communication department (technical coordinator of the project). In short, this is repository of information, presented through an interface in different formats, which has been collected over the years on the Macaronesian region. We have made available to all Internet users interested in the subject, this Web page in the hope that this work will be useful to scholars, researchers, teachers and students. The Tenerife Museums intention is to become a showcase of knowledge about Macaronesia. The Museums counselor notes that “the creation of this Web Portal is one of the main actions in the framework of ‘Pliny XXI: creation and dissemination of the Natural History of Macaronesia through technologies of the information society’, which is a project funded by the Transnational Cooperation Programme Madeira-AzoresCanaries (MAC) from 2007 to 2013 “. It was featured in the ‘International Seminar on Natural History of Macaronesia’, held on 21 and 22 November at the Museum of Nature and Man. It gathers different international experts in the field, from the Azores, Madeira, Cape Verde Islands, United States, Britain and Germany.

Los Cristianos Tremor By janetanscombe.com
tReMoR off Los Cristianos could be connected with ongoing el hierro eruption says aVCan.
IGN recorded a tremor of 2 on the Richter scale at a depth of 30km last weekend at 4pm. Of itself, this would be quite normal and unremarkable other than it took place just off the coast of Los Cristianos, and together with one of 2 degrees in the morning a couple of days ago off the coast of Arico, is aligned with El Hierro, and so, says Avcan (Actualidad Volcánica de Canarias) could be connected to the continuing activity there which has been reinforced by significant seismic action throughout the week. Watch this space, as they say.

Coast’s Decision On Demolitions
soMe 70 coastal communities in the Canary Islands are still anxiously awaiting a decision by the state Government’s Ministry of the environment, to find out if their properties can be saved by the changes set out in the new Coastal act, in force since May this year. Municipalities had until
late August to provide documentation to prove that the properties in these villages are eligible to be included as they fall beyond 20 meters of the maritime-terrestrial public domain and easement area, or whether they must abide by the 100 metre rule and be demolished. Tenerife has 20 affected areas : Salinas de Fonsalía and Varadero-Punta Negra (Guía de Isora); Mesa del Mar, Prixmar and El Pris
(Tacoronte); Igueste de San Andrés, Tachero, Playa del Roque andy Almáciga (Santa Cruz de Tenerife); Sibora-El Puertito and La Caleta de Interián (Los Silos), La Palmita (La Victoria), Las Eras, Las Arenas and La Sarnosa ( Arico), Jóver and El Guincho (La Laguna), Playa de La Viuda and Playa de La Lima (Arafo). The Ministry has 18 months to make its decision on the individual cases.

The challenge begins on 2nd December 2013 when the brave and intrepid will pit themselves against the elements and race the 3,000 miles from La Gomera in the Canary Islands to Antigua. The boats are just seven metres long and two metres wide, and will be the rowers’ homes for 40-50 days, where they will row in two-hour shifts enduring blisters, salt rashes and sleep deprivation. More people have been into space than have rowed the Atlantic, and it is rightly considered as one of the toughest challenges on the planet. The Atlantic Challenge is proudly supported by TALISKER Whisky, the only single malt from the Isle of Skye.

Live Arico News Who can turn Bonnie’s Life Around?
Bonnie is 5 months old, a terrier mix and a real sweetie. Her life so far though has not been so sweet. She was just 2 months old when found in the road all alone. Since then, she has been in 4 foster homes, who could only offer very short term care. We are very short of fosterers and always appealing for more, but Bonnie’s latest experience has caused us to learn a hard lesson and tighten up our procedures. Why? Because Bonnie’s last “carers” left her tied to a lamppost, in the rain, shivering and alone. At the time of writing details are sketchy, but she is micro-chipped so has come back to us safely, albeit after a night spent in a refuge. A denuncia is being made. So poor Bonnie has gone from pillar to post and really just now needs to settle down and be loved. Could you be that person?

In Memoriam - Steve Powell
Last Wednesday, after a battle against cancer, Steve Powell, a well known, highly respected and much loved entertainer on the island, sadly passed away.
Steve, together with musical partner, Terry Rowley, who he had performed with for over 3 decades were the resident duo, Two Risky, at the famous Drunk ‘n’ Duck pub in The Patch and have entertained countless tourists and residents alike with their music, harmonies and cheeky banter. He Formed Two Risky with Terry Rowley in 1983, having worked the circuit all over the U.K., they arrived in Tenerife back in 1990. Since then they have worked in the Brewers Droop, Billy Bunters, Toucan/Amandas, Drop Inn, San Eugenes, Puerto Colon Harbour bar and finally made their home at the Drunk’n’Duck, in 2005 until this year, where they gained an enormous following with people coming back year after year to see them. Steve was mugged outside his home last September, suffering two broken ribs and various other injuries. He was recovering over the next few months until, after collapsing at home, a scan showed signs of lung cancer. A benefit was held for Steve on Sunday 17th November at the Duck, with an incredible turn out,
many entertainers got up to perform, and local businesses
donated all kinds of prizes. Tragically, Steve passed away only two days later. Our thoughts go out to all of Steve’s many loved ones, by whom he will be sorely missed. A message from Terry and Sue Rowley; “Less than two weeks ago we were in the middle of a benefit day for Steve, unfortunately because of things beyond our control we have not had time to thank the many friends and entertainers who gave up their time to make last Sunday such a huge
success. Sadly Steve passed away on Wednesday morning. We said goodbye to him yesterday and yet again you were all there for him. Steve was a beautiful man, a great musician and we feel honoured to have known him. Now is the time to help a very strong and lovely lady, Steve’s wife Sandie who now needs all our help and support to get her through these sad times. Once again we would like to applaud you all. Thanks Terry and Sue RIP Steve xxxx “

adeje voices its rejection of Domestic Violence
the oFFICIaL act was presided over by the mayor of adeje and the council. also present were third year secondary school students from the Los olivos Institute and adeje council staff.
Up to 200 people joined together at midday today, November 25th, for a minutes silence at the doors of Adeje Town Hall to show their total rejection of all forms of domestic violence which has taken the lives of 45 women in Spain this year. The public display was led by Adeje mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, with members of the council, students from the Los Olivos secondary school and Adeje council staff. The ceremony was part of a series of activities put in place by Adeje’s equality councillor Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz, to mark the International Day against Domestic Violence against Women. José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga read an institutional
manifesto from all the Tenerife southern boroughs and towns, and said “yet again this year we are saying it loudly and strongly, because South Tenerife reunites to show, via the network of Tenerife South Towns and the departments of Equality, our utter rejection of any form of violence against women. Despite of the laws passed and the resources that exist to attend to victims of domestic violence every year there is a bone-chilling number of women being murdered. This year so far 45 women have died and thousands more live day to day with violence and suffer psychologically and physically because of that threat, and of course we must not forget the children, who are the invisible victims as a direct result of this violence.” The mayor also said “reality requires us to look to our young people. This is fundamental for three reasons. Firstly we are concerned at the rise in the number of sexist crimes by adolescents with the increase in victims this
year the worst in 30 years. Secondly because it is never to soon to discuss and make people aware of domestic violence, and finally, the age at which young people enter into relationships is dropping every year, and were are concerned that, despite our best efforts to date, a section of our young people are continuing to display the kind of macho behaviour which promotes and encouraged inequality. “Because we want a soceity that is more just and more equal, and an Adeje that is inclusive, we state in no uncertain terms our total and absolute rejection of this social blight, and we reiterate our committment and responsiblity as an administration to further promoting all the means necessary and at our disposal to prevent, protect and report abuse where necessary”, promised the mayor. The Manifesto also took on board the committment by relevant bodies to continue working in schools and secondary institutions in promoting values of equality and
models of non-violent behaviour, a task that is not confined to the classroom but must continue in the playground and the home and wider community. With this Manifesto the Adeje council has renewed its promose to defend the inalienable universal rights of women The act ended with a mintues silence as a signal of respect for those who have
Facebook.com/TenerifeWeekly died and in recognition of the women who have taken the brave decision not to continue to suffer in silence and have reported their abuser, and for all those who work in the field of the promotion of equal rights. The council have also urged those women who continue to suffer in domestic violent situations to come forward and use the resources the council is offering them and beyond, reminding them that all it takes is a call to 112 and the help will be forthcoming.
Young people committing to equality
The students present at the act also shared their thoughts on macho
violence. They have been working throughout the term on a Equality Project with specialised training to help them. The student body prepared a reading for the event and a manifesto of their own committing to equality and rejecting all forms of sexist behavior, including jokes and comments which trivialises equality and reinforces existing levels of discrimination. They also promised to work to resolve all problems and conflicts in a nonviolent manner and help women who are victims of domestic violence and report cases that they are witness to.

Separated Rubbish Collection Service For Hotels
The aim is to increase the recycling of glass, paper and carton and plastic and contribute to improving the environment
Adeje mayor, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, along with the head of services for Ascan Torrabonaf, Francisco Valiño, held a meeting on Wednesday with hotels from the borough to establish a new series of strategies and synergies which will improve the system of recycling in tourist establishments. The meeting was held in the offices of Ascan Torrabonaf, the company licensed to carry out cleaning services in Adeje. Twenty hotel representatives were present as well as the councillors for services and for tourism Gonzalo Delgado Díaz and Rafael Dolado García, respectively, and council expert, Román García Higuera. As the mayor explained, the aim for the council and Ascan is to offer a door-todoor service for recyclable refuse, collecting glass, paper and carton and plastic from the hotels that, up until now, have had to dispose of the rubbish on an individual basis. In this way the company and council hope to increase levels of recycling in Adeje and improve the overall cleanliness of the borough. Rodríguez Fraga noted that this initiative was part of the council-wide plan, ‘Adeje, clean and healthy’, which has, as one of its objectives, an increase in the level of recycling in the borough, “something we can only achieve with your help. It is important to take into account that just one hotel produces more rubbish
that an entire neighbourhood. If we are serious about care for the environment we have to seek practical measures, and in this way we can make rubbish collection easier and increase the amount
of recycled items collected. The other part of the picture is that we want to contribute to the overall image of Adeje as a tourist town which takes environmental care seriously and is actively involved in it. As the meeting was taking place in the Ascan Torrabonaf installation the mayor said he was grateful at the level of interest shown by the hotels, adding that it was “very important that you find time to call to this facility, to see the installation and the quality of the work that goes into making sure that the system works”. The proposal from the council and Ascan Torrabonaf is that the hotels in the borough will avail of the new door-to-door service collect-
ing glass and plastic bottles, cans and tetra cartons as well as continuing to collect paper and cardboard, as has been the case for a number of years. The cleaning company, in conjunction with experts from the council, have designed an implementation plan for phase one, which would involve the hotels nominating a person who would be the point of contact for Ascan Torrabonaf. Once in place, the experts will study each case individually and, together with the person representing the hotel, determine what kind of containers to be used and where they will be placed. The frequency of collection of separated refuse from the hotels will be once a week, between the hours of 2pm and 8pm for glass and plastics. Collection of paper and cardboard will continue to be at night time for now although the company is open to reconsider the time of this collection. “We will begin with one weekly collection and ask for the cooperation of the hotels and the representative from each hotel to advise us when the container is 75% full so we can call the following day for collection”, explained Francisco Valiño. He added that they were making decisions based on estimates for now, but that could change once the service gets under way, depending on necessity. In this regard too
Valiño appealed for common sense in storing rubbish and that boxes and plastic bottles should be flattened, a practise which triples the capacity of the containers thus obviously reducing the number of times a lorry and personnel need to make a collection run. “In the case of certain hotels that may fill a plastic bottle container daily, we are studying the possibility of placing a number of containers there so that a collection can take rubbish from three or four days in one trip. Francisco Valiño confirmed that the collection of organic waste would continue at night time. “It’s a question of organisation of all the different rubbish collection services all over the island, and we are also dependent on the hours of operation of the residue plants that are determined by the Tenerife Cabildo.” To separate glass waste, Valiño is offering hoteliers a
15
series of containers that have a hydraulic system which is relatively simple to use and allows easy and quick emptying of a smaller bin. “With this system we save you the time needed to place bottle after bottle into the green containers. It just needs a zone in the open air or inside in an area of no less that 7 metres high for the operation of a small crane. In exceptional circumstances Valiño says that Ascan Torrabonaf could place, in up to 10% of hotels, a series of construction-style trays, of 6 m3, for glass deposits, which could be placed on a ramp in a small basement or internal zone, but it depended on each individual case. Hotels that were unable to attend the meeting can make contact directly with Ascan Torrabonaf to take advantage of this new service by emailing contacto@adejelimpio.es or calling 922 71 19 89.

MAINLAND NEWS IN BRIEF Foreign sales of Spanish products increased by 6.8 per cent between September 2012 and September 2013 to reach 175bn euros, says a report by Expansión. He had been convicted at Cambridge Crown Court of nine counts of indecent assault against three boys under the age of 16 in Letchworth between 1989 and 2006. He was also convicted of one offence of gross indecency and one of sexual activity with a child. The offences involved him grooming young boys, buying things their parents could not afford and gaining their trust before assaulting them, the court was told during his trial. spanish scientists have received funding to test whether they can clone an extinct goat. The bucardo became extinct in 2000, but cells from the last animal were frozen in liquid nitrogen. The scientists will test the viability of the female mountain goat’s 14-year-old preserved cells. The Aragon Hunting Federation signed an agreement with the Centren for Research and Food Technology of Aragon (CITA) in Zaragoza will begin preliminary work on the cells from the last animal, Celia. spain will see more deaths than births in 2017, says the National Statistics Institute, forecasting that the Iberian nation’s population will decline by 5.6 percent to 44.1 million. The data reflects “the intensity of the aging process” among the population, the drop in births will result from the country having fewer women of child-bearing age, itself a legacy of the baby bust of the late 1980s and early ‘90s. As for life expectancy, in 2022 it will stand at 81.8 years for men and 87 for women, compared with the current 79.3 years and 85.1 years, respectively. With regard to deaths, they will increase in number despite the loss of population and greater life expectancy, due to the aging of the population. This year 291,909 immigrants will arrive in Spain, 7.1 percent less than in 2012, and for every person that comes here, two will leave. the forthcoming UK satellite TV turnoff has sparked outrage amongst ex-pats around the Andalucia region of Spain. Concerned viewers have racked up a record 466 comments in the six months since the Olive Press first broke the news. Most ex-pats are keen to establish how they can carry on watching the atrisk channels following the satellite switch off, which could happen at any time now. The problem is a result of a new satellite being sent up to replace that which was beaming the channels to the television screens of expats in Spain.

Spain In ‘Wrong’ Time Zone Since WW2 on oct. 23rd, 1940, adolf hitler, leader of nazi Germany made a journey to the spanish border to woo spain’s Fascist dictator, Francisco Franco. Fascist Italy was already aligned with the Fuhrer and he wanted spain’s support too. But spain was in ruins from its own Civil War in the late 1930s, and Franco didn’t have much to offer. he stayed neutral, but switched spain’s clocks ahead one hour, to be in line with nazi Germany.
Since that day although Spain is geographically in line with Britain, Portugal and Morocco — its clocks are on the same time zone as countries as far east as Poland and Hungary. Now, more than seven decades later, the Spanish government is debating whether to change them back. In Spain, the sun rises and sets much later than in the rest of the time zone it’s in, called Central European Time, or CET. This fact means generally Spaniards tend to be more nocturnal, on average they get less sleep, 53 minutes less, they also work longer hours, but at lower productivity. Emilio Sainz, a worker from Madrid says;. “Here you work too many hours, but you need to stop at midday for two or three hours, and then finish too late,” he says. “It’s something cultural. Go back home, take a big lunch — a typical
Spanish meal. The siesta is optional, but if you have time you can do it,” Sainz says, shaking his head. “But for me, it’s sometimes more useful to keep English time. Like, to come back home earlier in the evening, to have some time on your own.” In many Spanish neighbourhoods, you can’t get a cup of coffee before 9 a.m. The post office is open until 9 p.m. Economists say Spain’s time zone feeds that schedule — and costs the country dearly. “We have no time for personal life or family life,” says economist Nuria Chinchilla,. “Therefore we are committing suicide here in Spain. We have just 1.3 children per woman. And it’s because we have no time. Because otherwise, we are not sustainable!” Chinchilla exclaims.
“In the crisis, we have seen that the companies that are flexible, that have more rational schedules, then they are more productive too — and they are able to be more flexible in the way they are going out of the crisis.” Although a change to GMT for Spain could become reality, some doubt that Spanish culture — with its late-to-rise, late-to-bed habits — could be transformed by a simple change of the clocks. The siesta was a fixture in Spanish life for centuries. Before air conditioning, it was a way to get through the long, hot Spanish afternoon. Until the end of the 20th century, Spain was relatively poor, and Spaniards had to work two jobs — hence the long hours, For Emilio Sainz, who’s just moved home from Britain, Spain’s time zone is the late dictator’s final insult. Franco died in 1975; “Franco changed a lot of things. He made a lot of mistakes,” Sainz says with a shrug. “And here we are, carrying on with a lot of these outdated things.”
Spanish Neanderthals Were “Cannibal Gang” s CIentIsts have discovered the remains of a group of neanderthals in northern spain who were butchered and eaten by a group of local cannibals, according to research presented at the Royal soc i e t y in London. the 13 year study, proves these early humans butchered their
rivals, breaking open their skulls and bones to extract the marrow
The bones, first discovered deep inside the El Sidron cave system in 1994, had been preserved for 51,000 years and have been analysed using CSI forensic techniques. Carles Lalueza-Fox of the Institute of Evolutionary Biology in Barcelona said the slaughtered group included three children aged from two to nine, three teenagers and six adults;
“They appear to have been killed and eaten, with their bones and skulls split open to extract the marrow, tongue and brains,” he said. “All had been butchered. It must have been a big feast.” The Doctor said the bone pile likely washed through a sinkhole from a rocky shelter above, eventually settling in the small alcove of the cave system where they were found, meaning that they were kept in an amazing condition compared to other Neanderthal remains, and provided a unique glimpse into the past, of a deadly clash between two local gangs. The tools found at the site of the slaughter came from a few kilometres away, suggest-
ing their fellow early human attackers were probably also their neighbours.. Unlike the earliest anatomically modern humans, who coped with periods of food shortage by joining forces in large, efficient groups, Neanderthals tended to gather in small family gangs of around 10-12. When times were tough in winter, this meant they had to resort to extreme measures. Dr Lalueza-Fox said: “I would guess they were killed in winter when food was short. There is no evidence of any fire so they were eaten raw immediately and every bit of meat was consumed. They even cut around the mandibles of the jaw to extract the tongues.”

King Juan Carlos Leaves Hospital
sPaIn’s King juan Carlos has left a Madrid hospital after undergoing a successful hip replacement operation. the king had a hip prosthesis removed after it developed an infection. he went in for replacement surgery last week. he successfully underwent surgery last week to implant a permanent prosthesis in his left hip, doctors and a spokesman for the Royal Palace said.
Surgeon Miguel Cabanela said. King Juan Carlos is in good condition going into his rehabilitation because “he is very vigorous” and “has good musculature,” Cabanela, an expert on hip problems, was assisted by Dr. Robert Trousdale, a colleague at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The surgical procedure was his ninth in three years and the 14th in his life, he was in the operating room for
about two-and-a-half hours. The infection caused by the prosthesis implanted last year has disappeared completely and the new implant went in perfectly, the surgeon said in a press conference. The two surgeons removed the monarch’s infected left hip prosthesis on Sept. 24, implanting a temporary prosthesis. King Juan Carlos has undergone intensive antibiotic therapy since the infected hip implant was removed in September The 75-year-old monarch left the Quiron University Hospital on Monday, smiling and waving to reporters as he was driven away; “Everything is very good. Fantastic. Thank you,” he said to reporters from the car as he left for Zarzuela Palace to continue his recovery. His wife Queen Sofia, his son Prince Felipe and his wife Princess Letizia and their two young daughters Infanta Leonor and Infanta Sofia visited the monarch during his stay. The king’s daughters Princess Cristina and Princess Elena were also seen dropping by.
The manager of the of the Quirón hospital, where the king was being treated, Lucía Alonso, said the infection the monarch was suffering from as a result of a previous hip replacement had cleared up. Alonso said the king had “very satisfactorily” completed post-operational treatment since last Thursday’s surgery and had recovered sufficient mobility for day-to-day activities. The monarch’s popularity has dipped in recent years following scandals, including an elephant shooting trip in the middle of Spain’s financial crisis that tarnished the royal family’s image. His son-in-law, Inaki Urdangarin is also under investigation on suspicion of having embezzled large sums in public contracts. The king will be able to take trips of less than two hours “very soon” but will have to wait “six or eight weeks” before undertaking official visits abroad with long travel, the surgeon said.

British Embassy Launches Social Media seeK out the embassy’s new social media channels and get more out of living in spain
British people living in Spain can now use two new social media channels to engage with fellow residents, as well as to find news and advice from the Embassy and its partners who support Britons abroad. The new channels - ‘Brits living in Spain’ on Facebook and @BritsliveSpain on Twitter – let residents search for and share useful tips and experiences, thus enabling the 800,000-strong British community to better help each other and make more of Spanish life. The launch by the Embassy of these social media channels coincides with the first official visits this week by the new British Ambassador Simon Manley to Malaga, Alicante and Barcelona - and ahead of visits to the Spanish islands in the coming weeks. Mr. Manley said: “These days, whether we are young, or just young at heart, we are all going digital. Our new Facebook and Twitter channels are the
perfect way for Brits living in Spain to get more information about the issues that matter, and to comment on them so that we can engage better with our nationals living abroad. “I would really encourage Brits in Spain to search out our new chan-
nels, ‘like’ or ‘follow’ them, and reap the benefits of a new way of communicating with each other and with us.” The new social media channels are regularly updated with useful, independent information tailored to
Barnacles! a Galician Delicacy
FoR most visitors to spain, just looking at a slimy, ugly and unappealing gooseneck barnacle would have them running to the nearest McDonalds but for a Galician, they are an expensive, tasty treat - and the reason they are so pricy is the dangerous lengths that the barnacle-collectors or percebeiros go to, in order to prise them off the rocks, on this spanish region’s beautiful, but often inhospitable and ragged coastline
People who make a living this way risk life and limb collecting them, yet they claim stocks of the valuable seafood delicacy are being decimated by a rising number of people who go out gathering without a licence. Xose Lourenzo, a member of the Guarda pesca - the Fishermen’s Guard, a security service funded by the fishermen and barnacle-collectors spends his nights scouring the rocky coastline with night-vision binoculars, trying to spot people
gathering valuable gooseneck barnacles illegally. “Although they’re hard to collect,” says Mr Lourenzo, “it pays well. In just an hour, or two, you can collect 50 or 60 Euros’ worth.” Generally the perpetrators are either those who collect several kilos’ worth and then sell them to restaurants for a profit, or are those like Heladio Davila, who has been unemployed for two years and gathers the barnacles for food; “There’s no other way for us to earn, so we can eat,” he says. “There are no factories here, just two months’ work in
tourism during the summer.” A plate of barnacles can cost more than 50 Euros in a restaurant and traditional collectors are worried about competition from illegal poachers, and because the sources are
rapidly being depleted, often percebeiros hold a vote to decide who will head out to collect barnacles on any given day. They have also agreed to reduce the number of days they can head out to collect barnacles, from 15 days a month to just eight. .”We live off the barnacles,” says Susana Gonzalez Alvarez who is continuing a female family tradition. Her mother and grandmother were barnacle-collectors before her; she works on the rocks in a team, with her three sisters, Eladia, Isabel and Belen; “The fewer days we go out, the fewer barnacles we collect, and the less money we earn. It’s a job in which accidents are common, people often fract u r e arms and legs, and you can easily fall into the sea,” says Isabel. But inexperienced, illegal collectors are undeterred, and often do not respect the rules over the size of the barnacles you are supposed to pick and the parts of the coastline where you are not allowed to gather. The high price of these slimy snacks is something more and more people cannot resist, it’s just another consequence of the economic crisis.

Genetically Grisly Engineered accusations Fruit Flies
Sounds like a premise from a science fiction movie, but U.K.-based company Oxitec has applied to release their genetically modified olive fruit flies under netted olive trees in Spain, where the flies are a major problem for the olive industry.Releasing modified animals into the wild is a controversial idea, to say the least. The company has been testing their GM flies in cages, where the mutant insects drastically reduced the unmodified, pest fly population.
A During the normal life cycle of the fruit fly, females lay eggs by puncturing the skin of an olive, like a hypodermic needle punctures skin. When they hatch, the larva digs a tunnel deep into the olive as they grow. Once the fly is grown, it forcefully breaks out of the olive, leaving holes and dark spots on the olive. But these genetically modified flies are all male and have a specific gene where any female offspring between them and wild fruit flies will die as maggots; male offspring will carry the deadly gene as their fathers did and continue the cycle. “The new program is less about ‘does this work?’ and more about the first opera-
tional roll-out of this technology,” says Oxitec co-founder Luke Alphey. Oxitec have released other genetically modified insects into the world; their mosquitoes have been shown in Brazil to drastically reduce the dengue-fever-carrying mosquito population, in one town by as much as 96 percent. Insects are the only genetically modified animals that have been released into the wild, but crops and microbes have been engineered for many years, opponents of genetically modified plants and animals argue that it is impossible to know how other, unwanted genes that could be accidentally introduced, will affect the wild
population. Traits like pesticide resistance may accidentally spread. In response, Oxitec officials said that their fruit flies may reduce the need for pesticides in the first place, which will help keep synthetic chemicals out of the environment. The genes that they introduced are specific to flies, unlike pesticides, which can kill both pests and helpful insects needed for a healthy crop. If the scientists receive permission from the Spanish government, the test olive trees will be covered with nets to prevent the genetically modified flies from spreading. After the trial, the test crops will be destroyed.
The Beginning Of Christmas In Spain By redqueenmusings.wordpress.com
One of the most important TV ads of the year is for the Christmas Lottery “Gordo”. Gordo in Spain is seen as the run up to the Christmas Season and the advert features five of the most iconic voic-
es within their respective styles in Spain – Montserrat Caballé, Niña Pastori, Marta Sánchez, David Bustamante and Raphael. The ad tries to convey the illusion and longing of Christmas that the
Spanish couple is suspected of drugging and suffocating their 12-year-old adopted daughter in a mysterious murder case that has shocked Spain. Her adoptive parents were arrested on September 27, indicted for murder on October 18 and remanded in custody. They both denied killing Asunta.
Passers-by found the dead body of Asunta Yong Fang Basterra Porto, a schoolgirl who was born in China and adopted as a baby by the suspects, in a wood in northwestern Spain on September 22. For weeks pictures have circulated in the media of the girl’s adoptive mother: Rosario Porto, A 44-yearold Spanish lawyer, who served as an honorary consul for France in the Galicia region, showing her weeping and wrapped in a purple shawl as police searched her home. The chief suspect is her ex-husband Alfonso Basterra, a journalist who is
film crew wanted to reflect in the village of Pedraza, Segovia, which is where the video was recorded. It took them three days to shoot and involved a total of 140 members of the technical staff, 30 supporting actors and actresses as well as more than 400 extras.
Asunta’s adoptive father. The judge, Jose Antonio Vazquez Tain, caused a sensation last week when he lifted a secrecy order that had kept sensitive details confidential, while he questioned other suspects, but a series of baffling theories have surfaced. These included a report that semen from a third suspect was found on the victim’s shirt -- a suspicion that the judge said had now been ruled out of the probe. In another now abandoned line of enquiry, Asunta had been thought to be heir to an inheritance from her grandparents. In a summary report, judge Vazquez revealed ugly details of the accusations against the couple. Porto’s lawyer, Jose Luis Gutierrez Aranguren, dismissed them as “speculation”. The judge states Porto is “considered responsible in collusion with the other suspect of drugging her daughter for three months and of killing her by suffocation on September 21, it was he who administered to the child a toxic dose of Orfidal (a sedative)” at his home on that date, “to deprive her of all will and

defence and presumably to ease the action of asphyxiation, in a plan agreed with Rosario,” the judge wrote. He added that Porto had given contradictory accounts under questioning and had accused her exhusband of previously “poisoning the child on at least one occasion with white powders” that have not been identified. The summary added that the judge had ruled out three other suspects in the case, including a suspected rapist whose sperm was found on the girl’s shirt. Media said it was thought the shirt might have been contaminated while in possession of the police. Basterra was quoted as saying; “None of what has been said about this makes any sense, if the girl took an overdose of Orfidal as they say, she would have been dying as she left my house, and she wasn’t.” Security camera footage has indicated that Asunta was conscious when she left the house with her mother. As the news media feed on the grisly allegations in the case, many observers say the story does not add up since the killing lacks a clear motive. “It seems incomprehensible that the parents would both agree to kill their daughter,” wrote the journalist Fernando Onega in La Voz de Galicia, one of the regional newspapers that have been all over the story. “Neither Rosario Porto nor Alfonso Basterra are on trial” yet, he cautioned, in an editorial titled “The Mystery of Asunta”. “I think we have ahead of us a long parallel trial by media.”

“Robin Hood Bag Search Strains Mayor” Jailed Spain/Britain
the MaYoR of Marinaleda, juan Manuel sanchez Gordillo has been sentenced to seven months in prison for occupying unused military land that he wanted to be converted into farm land. Gordillo, who is well known for fighting for the rights of workers and the poor. he has set up a successful farming cooperative in his town and has occupied palaces belonging to
members of spain’s royal family in order to attract attention to the plight of the unemployed. The regional court of southern Andalusia on Thursday convicted Gordillo and four others of serious disobedience for ignoring warnings to leave the Las Turquillas ranchland they occupied during the summer of 2012. They were occupying the unused military land that they wanted to be loaned to farmers hard hit by the economic crisis. Sanchez Gordillo, has been mayor of Marinaleda since 1979, has staged several activities to
highlight the plight of Spain’s near six million unemployed, including Robin Hood-style supermarket lootings in 2012 to aid the poor His town of 2,700 people boasts full employment thanks to its farm co-operatives and has gained a reputation around the world as a “communist utopia.” He has built a system of co-operative labour that gives everyone a say in deciding how their farms and the town are run. Members of the farming co-operative all earn the same salary, and profits are reinvested to create more employment. The system has helped the town, which also has private enterprise outside of the co-operative, avoid the kind of job losses and economic hardship that have devastated other parts of Spain, which still has an unemployment rate of more than 26 per cent even though it technically emerged out of a two-year recession last month. Defendants given sentences of less than two years in Spain are generally not imprisoned unless they have previous convictions.
Relationship
GIBRaLtaR is centre stage in yet another upset as the Foreign office demands an explanation after a British diplomatic bag was opened and searched by spanish Guardia Civil officers at the border.
The incident, which occurred when a courier was taking the bag across the border from Gibraltar into Spain, was described by a Foreign Office spokesman as a “serious infringement” of international diplomatic protocols. Diplomatic bags and their diplomatic missions abroad are protected by the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Downing Street said a diplomatic message known as a “note verbale” had been sent to authorities in Madrid to make clear formally the action was “unacceptable”. Prime Minister David Cameron’s official spokesman said:
“The key point for the Spanish government to understand is the unacceptability of this kind of action and for them to desist.” A Foreign Office spokesman said: “There are long-established and internationally-accepted articles concerning official correspondence and the diplomatic bag to which the FCO adheres. We have asked the Spanish authorities to investigate what occurred and take action to ensure it does not happen again. There is no justification for this infringement of the UK’s rights under the Vienna Convention. Official correspondence and diplomatic bags are inviolable.”

Oz Family Break Xmas Lights Record, again!
the RIChaRDs family, of Canberra, australia, has broken the world record for the number of Christmas lights put up on a home for the second time. they had previously held the world record with 330,000 lights in 2011, but lost it last year to a family in new York, who managed 15,000 more than the Richards’ previous record.
David Richards, a barrister, installed 502,165 lights
around their house and garden, stringing the 48km of wires around his property, a mammoth task which he began in early October. The display, which is expected to be seen by tens of thousands of visitors, has been erected to raise money for a children’s charity, but Mr. Richards claims his motivation for spending almost every weekend working on the project was to reclaim the record, as he felt it was an easy target to achieve; ‘’It was sort of a reason to do it again, and they didn’t
Other performers included Tinie Tempah, who told Prince William this was all a “little bit like MTV Cribs”, referring to performing at the Duke’s house, he also made a reference to Prince Harry and some of his tabloid reported exploits in his lyrics: “.... felt naked, just like Prince Harry did in Vegas.” Taylor Swift also performed; “This is my first time playing at the Palace or any palace for that matter and I have to thank Prince William,” commenting on the cause behind the event she added; “It is hard enough being in your late teens or early 20s in any circumstances, then the fact that so many kids struggle with so much
more. When I was 15 and I was rejected or was lonely - which was quite a lot - I just wrote a song and called it 15.” Harry Styles’ ex expertly dodged questions about her love life, but struggled with the very British manner in which she was questioned; “I love your accent, but I just don’t know what you’re saying”, she told The Times Royal Correspondent, who asked in a rather posh accent how she felt about performing at a palace. After repeating the question more slowly, Swift replied she was “delighted and loved the romantic nature” of Kensington Palace.
break it by very much. I thought 500,000 was a nice, round number so I decided to go all out because I may never do it again.’’ A representative from Guinness World Records have visited the house and confirmed the record. The display has proved so popular; one couple even got married under it. Patrick Cormac became hitched to Mr
Richards’ cousin Luana Marriott at the house on Saturday under a blanket of white lights. He said: “It was amazing.” Richards said he bought all the lights himself but was unwilling to reveal the cost, the additional cost to his electricity bill however - an extra £1,400 a month - is being picked up by a green energy company.

Nigella’s Decade Of Hard Drugs
Tenerife Weekly - 29th November 2013 - 05th December 2013
Beckham’s Hold Red Cross Sale For Typhoon Victims
The ever charitable Beckhams have donated over 20 boxes of clothes, bags and shoes in an attempt to raise money for victims of Typhoon Haiyan, only to see them auctioned off on Ebay hours later. Ruthless shoppers bought fashion history, many seeing it as away to make a quick profit by auctioning them online. Among them are a tuxedo that belonged to the former England footballer and a pair of Dolce & Gabbana shoes that were once owned by his wife. The tuxedo was bought at the Red Cross for £75 and was given a reserve price of £300 online barely an hour later.
A court has heard claims that celebrity chef Nigella Lawson took cocaine every day for a decade. The allegations emerged from court as her two former PAs, Italian sisters Francesca Grillo, 41, and Elisabetta Grillo, 35, prepared to stand trial accused of spending £300,000 on Charles Saatchi’s company credit cards. The sisters told the court that Nigella abused cocaine, cannabis and prescription drugs. Meanwhile, Channel 4 confirmed that they will be going ahead with their plans to air a 10-part UK version of the US cooking talent show, The Taste, which features Lawson as a judge, in early 2014 regardless of the allegations of drug use. The British cook is a panel judge alongside Ludo Lefebvre, Marcus Samu-
elsson and Anthony Bourdain.
Despite the allegations, the advert for Nigella’s cooking talent show was shown in the States during a commercial break in the finale of Dancing With The Stars, and television network ABC insisted the second series will be broadcast from January 2 as planned, despite the drug claims. A statement from ABC said: ‘We have already wrapped production on ‘The Taste’ and it will air as planned beginning January 2nd.’ However, while the second series will go ahead, ABC are still ‘debating’ whether or not to invite Nigella back to judge a third season of the show, sources told the New York Daily News. Channel 4’s head of formats, Dominic Bird, confirmed the channel had picked up the series, saying: ‘I’m thrilled that Nigella is returning to Channel 4 alongside Anthony and Ludo. The Taste promises to be a hugely exciting and compelling competition with stellar talent and exceptional cooking at its heart.’

The original sale, saw fans queue around the block in a bid to get their hands on items owned by the superstar couple. Red Cross Volunteers walked along the huge queues collecting loose change in buckets, the money will go to victims of the devastating natural disaster in the Philippines. But those who wanted to get their hands on pieces from Victoria’s current wardrobe were left disappointed as most of the garments dated from her WAG days. There were also pieces worn by her during her Spice Girls career including a slashedfront LBD, a tight black T-shirt emblazoned with the word ‘POSH’ and an oatmeal hoodie with ‘Spice Girls’ picked out in black across the back.
Many of the pieces, which included designs by Dolce & Gabbana, Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo, started at just £25. The couple also donated their famous matching Dickensian outfits worn at the Venice Film Festival in 2006. Posting photos of her piles of discarded clothes ahead of the giveaway on her Twitter page, Victoria wrote: ‘Proud to support @BritishRedCross #ShopDrop Donating clothes for #Haiyan survivors.’ Victoria, handpicked the collection herself, spending the weekend sorting through her wardrobe, she urged others to follow and donate their old clothes. She said: ‘Typhoon Haiyan has devastated the Philippines, killing thousands and leaving hundreds of thousands homeless. The British Red Cross is now carrying out an enormous humanitarian relief project to help all those people in desperate need. David and I are supporting the Red Cross Shop Drop for the Philippines campaign
and we urge everyone in Britain to do the same.” A Red Cross source said: ‘We asked if they would like to help us raise money for the Typhoon Haiyan survivors and they jumped at the chance. Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines on Friday November 8th, and has left more than four million people homeless.

he creators of a new downloadable app claim arac hnophobes can be cured of their fear via their iPhone and iPad by sending them daily pictures of spiders! The Phobia Free app has reportedly been reviewed and approved by the NHS.
The interactive app works by exposing users to images of spiders, which become more realistic as they
progress. It also uses relaxation techniques and in-app games to track progress and set goals. It is hoped by the time a user is exposed to an augmented reality tarantula – that looks and behaves like the real thing – their fears will be under control. Dr Andres Fonseca, cofounder of Virtually Free which developed the app, said: ‘Having our app approved by the NHS is a tremendous endorsement of our work. We believe this initiative by NHS England to give people access to quality assured apps and protect patients is very important. Smartphones and tablets have become integral tools in people accessing medical information.’ Arachnophobia – an acute fear or spiders – affects six per cent of the population and is one of the most common phobias in the world.

7 Volcanoes, 6 Countries, 1 day.
Watch out Tenerife, it’s a volcanic epidemic! Last week experts were stunned as 7 separate volcanoes spanning 6 different countries, all began erupting within hours of each other.
A new island appeared in the Pacific after a submarine eruption just off NishinoShima Island Japan, erupted for the first time in 40 years. The Japanese Navy noticed the explosions as boiling lava met sea water giving rise to plumes of steam and ash. Almost 7,000 miles away in Mexico, the Colima volcano blew its top after a long period of relative calm. A steam and ash cloud rose two miles into the sky and the grumbling of the mountain could be heard in towns miles away. In Guatemala the ‘Fire Mountain’ belched out lava and sent up a moderate ash
cloud causing an ash fall over nearby towns. The explosions and shock waves occurring in the volcano can be felt by residents over 6 miles away. A record 10-kilometer-high (6.2-mile-high) ash cloud also rose above Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Naek Sembiring, a local resident displaced by the activity, told the Jakarta Post on Wednesday: “Tuesday evening’s eruption was the strongest so far. I was terrified.”Hot ash and lava spread to cities 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) away. Mount Merapi, also in Indonesia, erupted too. In Vanuatu the Yasur volca-
no also showed signs of activity, the explosions were quite weak but the continuous ash coming from the mountain covered nearby farming land. In Italy, Mount Etna also put on quite a display. The eruption started last week and keeps getting stronger as time moves on. A massive eruption lit up the sky and disturbed residents. The ash cloud was high enough to see flights canceled. The lava flow was the biggest in years, and the town of Zafferana which lay in its path saw some damage. Lava diverters were put into place, and most of the town escaped unscathed.
He may not have got a second series, but Norwich based radio/ failed TV presenter Alan Partridge is now not only a film star, he’s also got his name - and face, in lights .
Norwich city centre, which has recently experienced a boost in tourism thanks to the high profile of its favourite son, have opted for Alan Partridge themed christmas lights The festive display features a 30ft high impression of the iconic radio DJ’s face, which beams lights out from its eyes while Roachford’s Cuddly Toy, featured in the recent Alpha Papa movie, is played. It was switched on in front of a crowd of 8,000 people, including some Partridgemasked admirers by TV host Jake Humphrey – although Alan himself couldn’t be there. Instead, actor Simon Greenall – who plays Alan’s Geordie friend Michael, read a message from him, in which he apologised for being unable to join them due to being the ‘designated driver’ at a pub quiz night. The message added: ‘The

Dog Rescued From Spanish Dump A dog that was abandoned and left for dead on a dumpsite in Valencia has joined the ranks of the thousands of humans who move to the US every year, for the chance of a better life. Charlie was rescued by a man in Hillsboro, Oregon, Johnny Costa said he saw Charlie’s story on an internet post from a group called Let’s Adopt Global;
“Someone had chained him to a tire and left him in a junk yard to die and he decided not to,” Costa said. “He drug (sic) himself several miles.” Charlie was badly injured from the ordeal. He had managed to tear the skin of his leg, and break it badly. “He had to have his front leg completely reconstructed, pinned together,” Costa
said. “Then skin grafted on that.” Costa couldn’t resist the poor pup’s hangdog eyes and contacted the group. Two months later, Charlie arrived at Portland International Airport. Costa was very excited. Charlie not so much! “He was terrified when we got there,” Costa said. “They pulled up the crate and he was just huddled in the back of it all scared. I was thinking ‘this smells just like a junk-
yard and he’s gotta be terrified.’ He was just shaking. He nipped at me. He was growling.” But it didn’t take long for 3-year-old Charlie to get use to his new home – and his two new older brothers. “He’s like a totally different dog now,” Costa said. “He’s like a puppy. He’s lightning fast. He’s never had a good life. He’s going to be a fat puppy.” Nice one Charlie!
Designer dogs are big business. Breeders the world over are constantly playing god by cross-breeding man’s best friend to create new pets that are smart, healthy and hypoallergenic, dogs that live long and never annoy you with their constant barking- but most importantly, a dog that is guaranteed to never lose its puppy face.
Meet the “cava-poo-chon,” the latest in the search for the dog fountain of youth and the perfect pet accessory. The tribrid or “triple cross” was created by Linda and Steve Rogers of Timshell Farm in Pine, Ariz, and is a Cavalier King Charles spaniel and bichon frisé mix bred with a miniature poodle. The cava-poo-chon costs between $2,000 to $3,500 and combines the best of the three breeds, can live for up to 20 years they weigh 10 to 15 pounds on average, and the breeders offer a choice of color and two types of coat: curly or very curly. “There’s always been a market for these forever-ish young dogs,” said veteran trainer Steve Haynes, who is working with 50 first-generation cava-poo-chons. Until recently, specialized dogs like miniature Yorkies and miniature Maltese were the go-to dogs.” The “eternal puppy” craze started over 50
years ago, with mail-order teacup pups advertised in the backs of magazines. Yorkies, Maltese and Pomeranians were popular for a while, and recently there have been hybrid hounds “with cutesy names that end in ‘-oodle,’ ‘-uddle’ or ‘-poo’ that come with thousand-dollar price tags,” said author and certified animal behavior consultant Darlene Arden of Massachusetts So far, 58 families have returned to get a second cava-poo-chon, and 12 of the dogs have been certified to work in nursing homes and hospitals as therapy dogs, Rogers said. But the American Kennel Club does not recognize the new trend as an official breed, and one expert calls some specially bred small dogs expensive “gimmicks.” “There is no such thing as a teacup anything,” Arden said. “It is a market term used by backyard breeders and commercial breeders, so they can breed the smallest dogs that shouldn’t be bred and sell them for a whole lot of money. These dogs usually end up having health problems, and most veterinarians don’t want to touch them because the organs are so small.” “AKC does not recognize cross-bred or mixed breed dogs as official breeds,” spokeswoman Lisa Peterson said. “These dogs are the product of two purebred parents of different breeds, resulting in a litter of mixed breed puppies, not a new breed, according to our requirements.”

eLFRIDGes have long prided themselves with bringing a little refinement to the world of shopping, just walking through the door makes you feel a little , well… posher. now the up market store is hoping to bring that sense of upper class refinement to a form of shopping which is the ultimate quick buy for the shopper on the go, the vending machine! You can now pop champagne straight out of a vending machine after selfridges department store on oxford street installed the world’s first bubbly dispenser. selfridges have installed the special appliance in conjunction with favourite champers company Moet & Chandon, to allow people easy access to the fancy tipple while they’re doing their Christmas shopping. You won’t be able to pay for the champagne by traditional means though, and instead will have to purchase tokens, which kind of defeats the purpose; these fizzy drinkers are obviously in a hurry! The 200ml mini bottles, which are also decorated with Swarovski crystals, cost £17.99 each. Dawn Davies, from Selfridges, said: ‘This year, Selfridges have taken Christmas to a whole new level, transforming the entire fourth floor into a one-stop destination for gifting. The inclusion of the world’s first Moet vending machine makes a decadent addition to our Christmas emporium.’ And if you’re worried about the bottles being smashed when they are dispensed, don’t be – the machine uses a special robotic arm that transfers the champagne safely. Vending machines have changed a lot since their invention. The first modern coin-operating vending machine was in England during the early 1880’s and it dispensed post cards. So now Selfridges may have the poshest vending machine, but which is the straight up, whacked out, most crazy vending machine there is?

WORLDS POSHEST malls will sell you an ounce of the roe for a cool $500. They also have escargot, truffles, and even a $4 mother of pearl spoon.
Pizza – from scratch!
This is more like it; just tell me where in Europe! Let’s Pizza serves 10.5” “fresh” pies 24 hours a day for $6 each. The machine kneads the dough, sauces the pizza, adds toppings (you have a choice of three), and heats pizza in an oven in less than three minutes.
Mashed Potato
This mashed potato vending machine lives in a 7-11 in Singapore. It costs one dollar to fill your cup with hot mashed potatoes and a vat of gravy.
Here’s a few prize contenders: Live Crabs!
A vending machine in Nanjing, China sells live “fresh” crabs. The machine maintains an internal temperature of 41F to keep the crabs in a hibernation state without killing them. If you
receive a dead crab from the vending machine, the company says it will compensate you with three live ones.
Caviar
This has to be another contender for poshest, if you have a sudden craving for Imperial River Beluga Caviar wandering around Beverly Hills, Los Angeles as long as it’s before 2 AM, a few machines in the neighbourhood’s
Fresh Eggs
Each morning in Nagoya, Japan this vending machine is stocked with fresh eggs. A bag of 10-12 eggs costs $3. Just needs a bacon and sausage vending machine next to it.
Draft Beer
From Japan, comes perfectly pulled in a glass with a frothy head, it is $12 though.
Restaurant Vending Machine

Surely this is posher than champagne? Feel the need to buy gold but don’t want to drive all the way to the bank or to your broker? Just use this handy dandy gold vending machine, from “GOLD To Go”. The first one was installed earlier this year at the Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi.
Anger Release
Surely this one’s a joke? Apparently not! ‘Passive Aggressive Anger Release Machine’ is an interactive sculpture by Yarisal and Kublitz. Experience the most satisfying feeling when a piece of China breaks into million pieces. All you have to do is insert a coin, and a piece of China will slowly move forwards and fall into the bottom of the machine, breaking, and leaving you happy and relieved of anger.
Wedding
For the true romantics who think a Las Vegas drive- in wedding is too much faffing about, AutoWed is a novelty wedding machine offering a quick hitch, a couple of rings and a personalized certificate for just $1. Audio prompts, specially produced music, a bespoke retro keyboard and VFD display, ring vending and ticket printer all wrapped up in a Cadillac-pink cabinet with shiny aluminum fittings. Just don’t tell Britney!
Smart car
Yes, you read it right, Smart car!! We’ve seen plenty of interesting vending machines all over Japan, even for outright marketing, though the Smart Vendor in Shibuya Station might just take the creativity award home. Holding a full-size Smart Car, the faux vending machine has two choices (coupe and cabrio), and a convenient slot to insert the amount you need (about $20k). Of course, this is a concept only, but is a nice extension of their already creative vending machine idea that fits right into the Japanese love for instant gratification on-the-go. Besides, could you do this with any other car without it seeming like a big joke?
Dog Wash
The Dog-O-Matic, an automatic dogwashing machine, is a hit in the town of St. Max, France. Inventor Romain Jarry wants to launch it in Britain next year, but claims that “at the moment people are still getting used to the idea,” That’s probably because the device looks like a canine torture device!. “It doesn’t take long to wash the dog,” he said. “The longest part is the drying. The dogs don’t seem to get bored. They just sit there and they come out clean.” If your dog makes it through without trauma, your wallet won’t: It costs $21 to wash a small dog, $35 for a medium dog, and $49 for a big animal.

Harry Begins antarctic adventure
aFteR returning from the north Pole expedition in 2011 early due to his brother’s royal wedding, Prince harry has now headed off to the other end of the earth, in order to
raise awareness for wounded soldiers.
After a farewell event in London’s Trafalgar Square, Harry and his teammates made a quick stop in Cape Town until the weather calmed down, then the Walking with the Wounded South
Pole Allied Challenge landed in Antarctica to set off for Novo Airbase, to begin acclimating themselves to extreme (at times minus 50-degree) temps for their 200-mile trek to the South Pole. The Prince, 29, said, “This trip is another way of reminding everybody that as Afghanistan draws down and these guys aren’t in the news any more so than they already are, it’s a reminder to everybody that support must continue.” Three seven-man teams from the U.K., the U.S., Australia and Canada will race across more than 200 miles. The competitors will spend 12 hours skiing, then break for 10-minute rests every two hours. Whichever team wins is expected to reach the South Pole by mid-December. “Walking with the Wounded is a U.K.- based charity which funds both the re-training and re-education of wounded servicemen and women with the aim of helping them find long term employment after they have left the Armed Forces,” the organization says on its website.

Whats Wronga With Wonga? PaYDaY lender Wonga has caused outrage again by offering a £400 loan with 5,853 per cent interest to a 13-year-old boy. the interest rate was so high it would have taken him almost 100 years to pay off.
Drew Dalson, gets £5 pocket money a week, He was told he would have to pay back the cash and £56 interest after 18 days if he accepted the deal, which was sent by post, but, based on his income, it would have taken 98 years for the Dundee schoolboy to pay back the debt. ‘I get £5 a week pocket money – but only if I’m good. It would’ve taken me nearly 100 years to pay it back,’ said the schoolboy. Dad Brian, 52, said he was shocked to learn the firm had offered his young son the large sum of cash. ‘I thought it was really unusual when Drew received a letter addressed directly to him. When I opened it, I couldn’t believe Wonga were offering him so
much money. He’s a sensible lad and wouldn’t have done anything but I’m sure there are other kids out there who would be tempted by such an easy fix, especially before Christmas. What kid wouldn’t want £400 in his back pocket?’ Wonga, which has come under fire in the past for targeting students, reportedly offered loans to a 17-year-old and a 15-yearold just two weeks ago. It has since removed Drew from its database and said: ‘we neither market nor offer loans to under-18s.’

LthoUGh now I have a day job as well as singing 5 nights a week, my reading time has diminished to reading a couple of pages in bed before I fall into a coma, book still in hand, I’ll always be a bookworm at heart.
One of my favourite writers is the brilliant Stephen King, and of course, since his first ever novel “Carrie” was
Stephen King Special
adapted for the big screen, King’s warped imagination has been strip-mined for TV and movie projects. So, with the imminent re-
lease of the remake of Carrie, I thought I’d tell you about some of the Stephen King material in development. 1. Carrie Brian de Pal-

remake starring Chloe Grace Moretz from “Boys Don’t Cry Director” Kimberly Price. Looks like a classy affair, staying truer to themes of mother/daughter love than the 70’s version. 2, The Overlook Hotel When I first heard about this I assumed it would be a TV series, in the same vein as “Hannibal” and “Bates Motel”, but this is now a major motion picture from Warner Bros, it’s
with deadly consequences if they break the rules, this could be the next “Hunger Games”. 5. The Stand - One of King’s most ambitious novels, this has already been made into a miniseries but this is set for a big budget event movie. Set after a super virus wipes out most of mankind, survivors wage a war between good and evil. This project has just lost its acclaimed director Scott Cooper (“Crazy Heart”) but with a project this big I’m sure there’ll be plenty of takers. 6. 11/22/63 - Being developed for TV by J.J Abrams, a man discovers a time portal
a prequel to “The Shining”, about the events that occurred in the titular hotel before Jack Nicholson got writers block. 3. The 10 o’clock People - Starring Chris Evans and based on a short story from “Nightmares and Dreamscapes”, about a man who quits smoking and discovers that people in powerful positions are monsters in disguise. 4. The Long Walk - With Frank Darabont, a director who has been behind the camera on some of the best King non-horror adaptations (“Shawshank Redemption”, “The Green Mile”), this story of 100 teenage boys who participate in a race
which allows him to prevent the assassination of JFK. 7. It - Tim Curry gave us the scariest clown ever as Pennywise in the original TV miniseries, this Stephen King classic gets the big screen treatment, and a sequel in the planned “It-Part 2”. 8. Cell - This book in which a single pulse transmitted through every cellphone on the planet turns it’s recipients into mindless killers should please cinema goers obsessed with anything remotely connected to zombies. 9. The Dark Tower - Languishing in development hell for years this complex sci-fi / fantasy /western epic finally looks like it’s going to happen with Ron Howard directing Russell Crowe in a big budget trilogy. 10. Firestarter, Pet Cemetary and Children of the Corn - All three have been adapted before with various degrees of success, one thing’s for sure, King fans who don’t have time to read his lengthy novels will have plenty to watch in the months/years to come..... Which reminds me, I must wipe that drool off my book!!

It is important that we protect against their misuse, whilst still allowing legitimate use. It aims not just to prevent terrorist attacks, but to alert authorities to anyone planning such attacks.” Potassium chlorate and sodium chlorate, used in weedkiller and home fireworks, are also on the list, which also includes acetone, used in nail varnish remover, sulphuric acid, found in drain and swimming pool cleaner, and h ex a m i n e , found in c a m p ing fuel tablets. Sharples in Session By John Sharples
H
ere we are in the early throws of November and Christmas is all around us. Tenerife has finally realised that decorating hotels and bars early and selling decorations in August will help boost sales.
This year Christmas records reach a new level or depth, depending on your opinion. Susan Boyle is to duet with Elvis Presley on the Christmas single “Oh Come All Ye Faithful”. Susan is quoted as saying that this opportunity to sing with Elvis is not only awe inspiring but awesome too. I think it is an absolute miracle considering that the King of Rock and Roll died in 1977 when she was just 16 years old. Simon Cowell is, of course, dubbing her voice onto an original record that the king recorded in the year 19 twiddly dot! It is a charity single, so we mustn’t be too harsh, but it will be included on her fifth album, which isn’t for charity so I am sure the single will help album sales. I did return to sender on the karaoke in “The Theatre Bar” and it doubled their take so I do understand the importance of the King. Other treats to look forward to this Christmas will include Kelly Clarkson’s “Underneath the Tree” from her holiday album. For me, a
holiday is a beach in a faraway place but they love to use that word for Christmas these days, just so that Muslims, Jews, Atheists etc etc etc, don’t feel offended. I don’t mind what other people call it, to me it is Christmas. Cliff Christmas .... sorry Richard probably won’t give us a seasonal offering this year because he has just released his 100th album. Yes ... ONE HUNDRED long playing records of Cliff Richard. Oh what a Christmas gift that would be. Imagine opening a gigantic present only to find out that Granny had bought you the “Tinsel Treat Box Set of Cliff’s 100 albums”. I must admit, I like Cliff Richard. He was a fabulous artiste. For me, his fabulousness started to fade in the eighties but he still managed to let Millenium Prayer loose on an unsuspecting public in the guise of auld lang syne. I have forgiven him for that dreadful moment in his career and so has George Michael who allegedly called it a “heinous piece of pop” and I really hope that he gives us another Christmas delight soon; after all, he doesn’t do it for the money. He does it because he wants to spread the word of Jesus Christ and that can’t be a bad thing in this day and age! Most people make records so that they can spend most of what we peasants call our “work-

I have a heartwarming Christmas album by “The Waltons”. Yes John Boy and Mary Ellen give it their all whilst Jim Bob blows on his mouth organ. The recent John Travolta and Olivia Newton John Christmas album leaves you wondering ..... WHY? I wish I could write to them and say ..... Hey! Grease was over 30 years
ago. Don’t you think that it is time to move on. This is a truly awful album so I will get a copy as soon as I can. There are some wonderful standards that the British people adore. Songs like “Merry Xmas Everybody” by Slade, “Last Christmas” by Wham, “Lonely this Christmas” by Mud and “Mr Blobby” by a man in a spotty suit. Going back to where I started. I love Christmas singles. They are silly fun and I look forward to seeing what this year’s crop will be like, but can’t they release them

The pop star, who now lives in Los Angeles, opened up during a discussion about cosmetic surgery. “I’ve lived in LA for a long time and they say, ‘If you sit in a barber’s shop for long enough you’ll get a haircut. Well, if you live in Los Angeles for long enough you’re going to get some surgery. I’ve had a thatch done, I’ll tell everyone now. I didn’t even need it, that’s the weirdest thing. I had like three months off and got bored so thought, I’ll go in. I just got some at the sides and front done,” Williams revealed whilst filming the show. “That’s what I am saying about Los Angeles, it’s weird,” he added The star, who has a Pepe

Cocaine Haul Found on Beach
a
M a s s I V e amount of cocaine in bags has washed up on beaches in japan. the drugs, which are believed to be a smugglers haul, have a street value of around £45m with a weight of 120 kilos in blocks, and were washed up in back-
packs onto several japanese beaches.
A total of 6 backpacks have been discovered so far making it the biggest ever drugs haul in Japan, the first 4 were found by an elderly local, on a beach just south of Tokyo, they were said to have been found fitted with a buoy and illuminated markers. Reports suggest the drugs were part of a smugglers’
haul but a police spokesman declined to comment. In total there were 120 kilos (265 pounds) of plastic-wrapped blocks of cocaine inside the bags. The enormous amount dwarfs figures for the country in the last few years. Japanese police seized just 6.6 kilos of cocaine last year, down from 28.7 kilogrammes in 2011, according to the National Police Agency.

gardening and Nature By Steve Andrews - aka Green Bard In the UK there are plenty of rambling roses growing up garden walls but here in Tenerife in the Canary Islands you are far more likely to see Bougainvilleas. These beautiful flowers are a very common sight on the island and come in a range of glorious colours such as deep purple, red, salmon-pink and white.
Tenerife climbers and flowering vines
Climbers for the garden The plant, which is also known as Paper Flower, was named after Admiral Louis de Bougainvillea who discovered it in 1768. The Bougainvilleas (Bougainvillea glabra and B. spectabilis and their hybrids) are drought resistant, fast growing, evergreen and tolerant of most soil types, so make ideal climbing plants for covering a wall or trellis. Another very popular climber is the Passion Flower with its unique flowers, which have 5 petals and 5 sepals and were thought by early missionaries to represent Christ’s 10 disciples, leaving out Peter and Judas. The coloured filaments in the centre of the flower they likened to his halo or crown of thorns and the tendrils the plant uses to climb were the whips used to scourge him. As well as this interesting background and a very attractive appearance, some species such as Passiflora edulis also bear delicious fruit that can be used for jams and jellies as well as for its
Passion Flower Blooms
Flame Vine asoliana) are very popular climbing shrubs that are excellent for forming screens and covering walls or fences. Both plants bear beautiful lilac-pink trumpet-shaped flowers nearly all year round and have glossy evergreen foliage. They grow fast and tolerate drought, salt spray, wind and heat. Many vines and
juice. Yet another unusual climbing plant seen in Tenerife is the Balloon Vine (Cardiospermum halicacabum), which grows up trees, fences and over walls. It has bunches of small white flowers, which are followed by conspicuous green bladder pods. These dry out and turn a pale straw yellow and contain the hard brown seeds. Similar in their habits are the Morning Glory vines of which there are many colourful species. The Blue Morning Glory (Ipomoea learii) with funnel-shaped bluepurple flowers is commonly seen covering whatever it has climbed all over and will go right up trees and poles. The Mile a Minute Vine or Messina Creeper (Ipomoea cairica), as its name suggests, is a very vigorous plant that is often cultivated on the island for its beautiful purple-pink blooms. The Port St. John’s Creeper (Podranea brycei) and its close relative the Zimbabwe Creeper (Podranea ric-
climbers have these qualities and so they are excellent for growing in parks and gardens in the Canary Islands. Another example of such a plant is the Flame Vine (Pyrostegia venusta) and a carpet of this bright orange-red flower trailing over a wall or rooftop is an unforgettable sight. The Golden Cup (Solandra maxima) has big golden yellow flowers and large evergreen leaves that provide a background contrast. It comes from Mexico but does very well in Tenerife. The Leadwort (Plumbago auriculata) has plenty of attractive blue or white flowers. In South Africa, which is where it comes from, it is regarded as a magical and medicinal herb. The ground up root has been used to treat headaches and other inflammation. The Sky Flower or Bengal Clock Vine (Thunbergia grandiflora) is another very beautiful blue-flowered climber often grown in Tenerife. The related Scarlet Clock Vine (Thunbergia coccinea) is another attractive climbing plant. The species described above are just a selection of the climbers that can be found growing on Tenerife and these plants provide much of the unforgettable colour seen in the gardens of the island. Climbers are very useful for providing a quick magnificent floral display and for covering over unsightly objects. They also are good for providing a bit of privacy and stopping people seeing over your wall or fence. Cultivate a climber!

Also known as the Bard of Ely, the Green Bard has a Green Beard, as can be seen in the photo. He is an expert on nature and loves to write about wildlife and conservation. He has a very wide knowledge of edible plants, foraging and herbs.
He was quoted as a “Weed expert” in The Ecologist. The Green Bard, though originally from Cardiff in Wales, is currently based in Tenerife where he has successfully reared many Monarch butterflies on plants grown on his apartment balcony. In May, 2012, at the English Library in Puerto de la Cruz he gave a talk on the Flora and Fauna of Tenerife to a full house and has been invited back to be a guest speaker again.

Simon’s Coming Back
aquarius 20 January to 18 February
You could experience delays in your career or with an important goal, but don’t despair. Sometimes this is fate playing its hand. By midweek you could be on a roll, with good news or perhaps an interesting offer coming your way. You seem very work oriented, but with the Sun in your social zone, you can enjoy yourself if you’re willing to take some time out. An unexpected phone call or message could boost your weekend and give you something to look forward to.
Pisces 19 February to 20 March
If you’re traveling, you may have to put up with a few minor delays early on, but apart from that, Thanksgiving week should go off like a dream. Whether you’re playing host at your place or going to someone else’s, it looks like you could have a lot of fun. However, the temptation to splurge over the weekend may mean you’re willing to spend more than you have in order to snap up the bargains. Try to budget for that early festive shopping spree.
aries 21 March to 19 April
Although you might be stumped concerning a joint financial issue that may have you in a bind, don’t despair. By midweek you could get some workable answers, perhaps from an expert or family member with a brainstorm. You might also hear good news concerning a bonus or pay raise. Thanksgiving Day looks to be a grand occasion at your place, with plenty of warmth and family magic. By the weekend you might feel like escaping the mad rush and doing something a little bit different.
taurus 20 April to 20 May
A communication blip early on could cause delays or general misunderstandings that might require patience to resolve. Yet there could also be good news from a friend, partner, or love interest that gives you something to smile about. Conversation flows midweek, and the time may be perfect for discussing collaboration or future plans with someone. Romance looks pretty hot, too, with plenty of options for dating and chances to have fun. Whether you’re with a partner or love interest, the week ahead could be pleasantly memorable!
Gemini 21 May to 21 June
On the whole you’ll probably enjoy the week ahead. It isn’t too taxing, although you might have to deal with delays at work on Monday. Aside from this, there may be good news associated with a plan or idea that could give you more options and leeway in the future. Thanksgiving Day could be very busy but rewarding, especially as it seems you could be hosting the meal and after-party. There’s also a chance of a surprise meeting that might have sparkling romantic potential.
Cancer 22 June to 22 July
This could be an upbeat week in which you can make progress with a budding romance or new love interest. Try not to worry if a communication block starts the week on the wrong note. This should be remedied by Wednesday. In fact, once you get over the initial hurdle, you could find yourself getting along better than ever. Long-term relationships show renewed sweetness and mutual support. Later, expect the unexpected where your job or career direction is concerned. If an opportunity leaps at you from out of the blue, take it.
Leo 23 July to 22 August
Personal financial matters could be up and down, mainly because you might have more bills to attend to as well as the opportunity to spend more. It may also be hard early on to get through to someone on the home front, but things can improve with perseverance. Listening to your intuition may help you take appropriate action. You could make a breakthrough in your relationship by Wednesday, just in time for Thanksgiving. Romantic opportunities could be yours when you move outside your comfort zone.
Virgo 23 August to 22 September
The start of the week has a businesslike quality, especially if you’re discussing urgent matters. If you’re too stubborn, you could spoil a potentially good deal, whereas flexibility could help seal it. Jupiter continues to light up your social zone. Some lovely aspects from midweek may bring a chance to make some new and exciting friends or meet with someone who is very much on your wavelength. Entertaining at home could go well on Thanksgiving, but expect a surprise visit a few days later.
Libra 23 September to 23 October
A cash-flow issue may halt spending on Monday, so be sure to have extra money with you in case of an emergency. The financial flow increases as the week moves along. A lovely connection suggests that good news on the job front may coincide with a small pay raise or even a bonus. This is a positive focus for Thanksgiving Day, which may bring your family together in the spirit of friendship and understanding. Watch out for an unexpected offer that could be hard to resist!
scorpio 24 October to 21 November
Stubbornness may give way to happier feelings as the week progresses. Don’t let personal problems spoil what could be a lovely few days. An overseas link or someone from far away could get in touch, leaving you feeling positive and upbeat. Your social life seems quite vibrant lately as Mars continues to stir things up in this area. With Thanksgiving showing up this week and plenty of invitations on the way, try not to burn the candle at both ends. Do enjoy yourself.
sagittarius 22 November to 21 December
The Sun in your sign may give you a vital boost, putting you in the mood for fun and games. Watch out for a slip of the tongue early on, as you could say something that causes a friend, partner, or love interest some embarrassment. Yet your intuition is generally on target over the coming days and may be useful if you’re facing an unusual or challenging situation. A sparky influence over the weekend reveals that an unexpected meeting could be the catalyst for a fun date.
Capricorn 22 December to 19 january
An intense conversation with a friend could result in a done deal, especially as you’re likely to be on the same wavelength. Your social life could bring some positive folks your way who may be able to help you with a personal goal or turn out to be supportive friends long into the future. Mixing and mingling is the way to go, especially around midweek on Thanksgiving, when doing a good deed for another may bring benefits your way.
sIMon Cowell has confirmed he will return to his old seat on the British talent show, the X-Factor. he also revealed he was in talks with Rita ora and hinted that he wanted Cheryl Cole back.
Talking about his own return to the show Cowell said: ‘I will at some point. I still miss that, I mean that show is my baby and that last year we did which was the One Direction year was the most fun I’ve had – it was fantastic. When I look back at the clips now and remind myself about it, it was a really cool year that.’ The ITV show has recently been losing the ratings war with BBC rival Strictly Come Dancing, and with Gary Barlow and Louis Walsh quitting and Sharon Osbourne retiring at the end of the series, the show needs to return with all guns blazing next year, ‘We’ve announced a new three-year deal in England,’ he said. ‘I’ve got some ideas of how the show is going to evolve and that’s the fun of producing these shows, you can’t just make the same show that you did five years ago. Cheryl and I patched up our differences a long time ago. I saw her recently, we speak a lot on the phone and text each other, and I think both of us would like the idea of working together again. She was a great judge. I mean, apart from being cute she’s a great judge and she knows what she’s talking about and, oh my God, she wears her heart on her sleeve!’ He added: ‘I met with Rita at my house recently and I was really, really impressed with her and you just know she’s a future star.’ Cowell insisted he was not admitting defeat after the US X-factor suffered a humiliating drubbing in the rat-
ings. After once bragging he expected to pull in 20million viewers in America, the fa-
ther-to-be had to settle for a not insignificant but disappointing 3.6million.

KFC Reproduced!
If there really is something I miss on this island, then it has to be KFC. Years ago we did have KFC on the Island but they have all gone now – leaving me craving it more than ever! You just can’t beat that finger licking good Chicken. It set me off playing with a few things, trying to find what is that “original secret recipe”. The 11 herbs
FLOUR MIX 250g plain flour 1 tsp. salt & pepper 1 tsp. dried basil 1 tsp. ground chilli 1 tsp. ground paprika 1 tsp. garlic salt powder 1 tsp. dried sage leaves 1 tsp. dried oregano 1 tsp. onion powder
and spices that give the chicken that unique flavour is a closely guarded secret – but I developed a close adaption – and I think you will agree it’s pretty good!
If you struggle to get the herbs and spices, Makro have a fantastic range of herbs and spices and I was able to get everything I needed from there. Also the buttermilk is readily available in any Lidl supermarket here on the Island!
Ingredients:
EGG WASH 240ml buttermilk 2 large chicken breasts (cut into cubes) or drumsticks and thighs if you prefer with their skin removed. Vegetable oil for frying
Method:
If you prefer to marinade the Chicken in Butter milk overnight it will make the Chicken a lot more moist and tender. This is only a preference, but I really enjoyed the results better when I did this. Firstly heat the oil in a deep pan to about 175°C or if you have a deep fryer this will work just as well. Mix all the flour mix together until well combined. In a separate bowl pour in the butter milk. Take each individual piece of Chicken and firstly coat it in the flour mix, then dip it into the buttermilk, coat it again in the flour mixture, back into the buttermilk and finally one more coating in the flour (this is called double dipping). Once all your chicken is coated, carefully fry the Chicken placing them one at a time in the hot oil. If you are using cubed Chicken breasts fry them for about 4 ½ minutes until golden brown. If you are using chicken on the bone this will take a lot longer- approximately 12 minutes and you may have to adjust the temperature accordingly so they do not burn. Test your chicken is cooked through by removing a piece from the oil and placing a tooth pick right the way through the thickest part of it, if the juices run clear – they are done. Enjoy!

Flying Cars Within Two Years?
Terrafugia, an American based company that has been working to make the flying car a reality for well over a decade and it now looks that within two years their dreams could come true. The name ‘Terrafugia is derived from the Latin for ‘Escape the Earth.’
The company plans to begin production of two “roadable” aircraft, the Transition, which has folding wings and must be driven to an airport for takeoff, and the TF-X, a car that could vertically take off and land. The company has proven technology and the product roadmap is designed to make personal aviation progressively safer and more accessible to a broad spectrum of driver. The Transition, is much fur-

engines as well as petrol, and the option of a manual gearbox. Ford promises ‘confident and engaging’ handling. The concept packs plenty of futuristic tech, including Ford’s ‘Fully Assisted Parking Aid’, which allows drivers to slot their Edge into a parking spot remotely. Get out of the car, push a few buttons and the Edge will magically manoeuvre into a tight spot, putting those “people who can’t park” YouTube videos out of business! . The Edge will join the SMax MPV in the line-up, giving Ford a small-to-big range of SUVs: the Fiesta-based Ecosport sitting below Kuga, with S-Max and Edge above. All these SUVs, of course, should be available in hot ‘ST’ and ‘RS’ spec.
eters per hour in a distance of only 34 meters, Terrafugia says that they have requests for one hundred pre-orders earlier this year. Owners of the ‘flying car’ will require a valid driver’s licence as well as a sport pilot certification to operate the Transition. The Transition must also meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards of the National Traffic Safety Administration as part of the automotive
certification process. CEO Carl Dietrich said; “The potential benefit to humanity of a practical flying car is tremendous, the global impact of widely distributed, practical, personal airborne transportation has been estimated by the non-profit CAFE Foundation at approximately $800 billion/year. NASA has estimated it at $1 trillion/ year. I believe it is impossible to quantify the benefit to hu-
manity.” But Motoring.co.uk isn’t convinced; ‘Is this company realistic in its ambitions? The industry globally hasn’t really achieved the electric car dream, and the much needed infrastructure to go with it. So as for flying cars and actually sorting the infrastructure, red tape and air space rules that will be needed, well it’s just head in the clouds stuff we think!’

Tudor Monastery Farm Editor Recommends BBC 2 - 21:00 - 22:00
hIstoRIan Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Peter Ginn and tom Pinfold turn the clock back over 500 years to run a farm at the Weald & Downland open air Museum in West sussex exactly as it would have been in 1500, during the reign of the first tudor King, henry VII.
This week, the team will learn to master the landscape away from the farm in order to supplement their income. The monasteries’ land covered a variety of landscapes, from rivers and woodlands to hills and mines, all of which the tenant farmer
would expect to exploit to raise income for themselves and the monastery. Lead was one of the most important building materials in the Tudor period. Tom and Peter mine their own lead using Tudor techniques, and Ruth too experiences the importance of this material by using lead in learning to make a stained glass window. Out on the rivers owned by monasteries, tenant farmers could rent fishing rights. Ruth makes specially designed baskets and goes out to catch some eels. In the Tudor period, freshwater fish was a luxury for ordinary folk and enjoyed only on feast days.

Who’s The Hot Favourite?
WIth the final few places for the World Cup to be announced this week, we should have the full guest list for the Brazilian carnival next summer.
Neymar. The latest in a long line of Brazilian superstars, his phenomenal speed, passing and creativity were a badly-kept secret even before his £50million move to Barcelona in the summer.A definite contender for a future “best player in the world.” ARGENTINA. FIFA Ranking: 3rd Odds: 11/2 with Coral Argentina comfortably qualified for the finals, finishing top of the South American group and losing just two of their 16 matches. Outside of South America they have beaten Germany, Sweden and Italy all away from home over the last 14 months - an encouraging sign. Of course they have the undisputed best player in the world, 3 times Golden Boot winner and goal scoring machine, Lionel Messi, who could one day be the greatest of all-time. Of course, lately he’s been plagued by injury, so he needs to ensure that
But who will hold the trophy aloft once the dust settles? MARCA.com viewers believe there are two clear favourites for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Spain and Brazil were voted as the leading contenders for the trophy by almost 80,000 viewers in a survey. The two nations are drawn level as the two teams with the best chance of becoming world champions. ‘La Roja’ slightly edges ahead of the host nation, but only by a whisker. Argentine football star Lionel Messi said his favourite teams to win the 2014 Brazil World Cup are Germany, Brazil, Spain, France and Argentina.
“Germany, Brazil, Spain, France and us also,” said the Barcelona forward during an interview with Buenos Aires’ radio station La Metro in Spain, when he was asked about his favourite teams to win the 2014 Brazil World Cup, Xinhua reported. Though there will be 32 contenders, most bookmakers can’t see past
holders Spain and three traditional powerhouses for the trophy - Brazil, Argentina and Germany. Here are some of the reasons why. BRAZIL. FIFA Ranking: 11th Odds: 10/3 with Coral World Cup hosts almost always see the odds improve, even just if it’s down to the confidence gained
by playing in your own backyard. High goal scores in recent matches prove conclusively that goals are not going to be a problem. Brazil, as we all know, are past masters of the World Cup, with a record five wins to their credit. But their modern team has failed to hit the heights of vintage Brazil. Their ace card is
he’s in the best shape ever for Brazil. SPAIN. FIFA Ranking: 1st Odds: 6/1 with Coral Despite being the defending World and European champions, qualification didn’t come as easy as you’d expect for Spain. They’ve been unconvincing in quite a few friendlies too, not least the 2-1 win against Equatorial Guinea ranked 119th in the world. But you’d never write them off, especially with so many potential star players it’s almost impossible to pick just one: Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez, Xabi Alonso, David Villa, David Silva, Santi Cazorla, Cesc Fabregas, Fernando Torres... Naysayers point to signs that Spain’s star is fading, that they don’t always dominate teams as they once did, winning by a margin of three or four goals, but a World Cup Tournament is exactly what might be needed to bring the magic back to La Roja. GERMANY FIFA Ranking: 2nd Odds: 5/1 with Coral Qualifying in a thoroughly German manner, marching through their 10 matches without defeat, scored 36 goals and finishing top of the group by a clear eight points. Germany are always potential winners at the World Cup. They have reached the semi-finals in all but five of the tournaments they have qualified for over the years and recorded victories in 1954, 1974 and 1990. Like Spain, their goal-scoring arsenal is really impressive, Mesut Ozil is probably the man if forced to pick one. It’s the strongest German side assembled in a good while and they’re not going to struggle for goals, but they’ve been so close before, and history could end up repeating itself.

Mid Air Fright Doesn’t Thwart Man U
David Moyes and his Manchester United squad suffered a midair scare in Germany on Tuesday. United’s chartered plane was just 400 metres from touching down at Cologne airport on the way to the Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen
when their plane had to abort its landing. The pilot reacted rapidly after realising another aircraft was already on the runway.
The Barclays Premier League club’s players were thrown back in their seats, as the Monarch aircraft fought to regain height quickly to avoid a collision. The entire
United squad were on board the plane, including players, manager David Moyes, and all the backroom staff. United defender Rio Ferdinand tweeted on touchdown: ‘Landed in Germany... just... I’ve only just recovered after that choppy landing.’ The pilot emerged from the flight deck after the incident to apologise to the United party and explain that they had not been in any danger. The incident certainly didn’t negatively affect the teams game, smashing Bayer Leverkusen , who are the second-best team in Germany, 0-5, with Ryan Giggs, who is 40 today providing clever movement and passing, as well as clearing up danger when Bayer Leverkusen broke, and Rooney in excellent form, scoring 2 first half goals and setting up a third.
Ronaldo injured as top three all win in Spain
Last weekend was a good one for Spanish football, but it was at a price for Real Madrid. They made it look easy at an away game against Almeria on Saturday night, but their victory was soured, as Cristiano Ronaldo was forced out of the game with a muscle injury.
Ronaldo scored the first goal in a 5-0 win for Real Madrid, in the fourth minute of
the game, but asked to be substituted after crossing the ball in the 51st minute. His absence didn’t adversely affect his side as Karim Benzema made it 2-0 after 61 minutes, while Gareth Bale took advantage of a defensive error to make it 3-0 and Isco added a fourth with quarter of an hour remaining. Alvaro Morata added a fifth with a smart chip over Almeria keeper, Esteban in a match where Real Madrid dominated a side that had won its last three matches.
Injury kept Messi out of his side’s 4-0 win at home to Granada, but despite the absence of the club’s star striker and several other key players, Barca also made easy work of it. Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabrigas both scored first half penalties to put their side 2-0 up at the break, while Alexis Sanchez with his eighth goal of the season and Pedro Rodriguez with his seventh sealed the victory. Atletico Madrid had an easy 7-0 win at home to local rivals, Getafe despite the absence of Diego Costa, who began the game on the subs bench. The game was over as a contest four minutes into the second half, thanks to two goals from Raul Garcia, an own goal from Alvaro Lopo and a finish from David Villa. On Wednesday night Real Madrid showed that without Ronaldo they were still a force to be reckoned with, putting 4 past Galatasaray, including a belter of a free kick from Gareth Bale. The 4-1 victory at home for Madrid puts them through to the last 16 of the Champions League as Group B winners.

England Team In High Spirits
England’s cricket team needed to prove that their first-Test defeat to Australia hasn’t dampened their spirits, and they did it in style with a song and dance routine, enjoying a bit of Australian culture and tradition with some local tribesmen After the Aussies emerged
victorious in the first Ashes Test on Sunday, England headed to national landmark Ayers Rock for some inspiration; there they joined in with a performance from Wakagetti cultural dancers at Ayers Rock, also known as Uluru. On a more serious note, England’s Stuart Broad has admitted he was ‘heartbroken’ that team-mate Jonathan Trott has returned to
the UK with a stress-related illness: ‘It’s heartbreaking for us to lose Trotty. He’s been part of the side for four or five years – he’s a fantastic guy. He gave us a lot of solidity in the No.3 spot. But the important thing is he’s got the support of the changing room he’s played with for 49 Tests. Everyone’s looking out for him and he gets a bit of privacy at home to get himself right.’
Man U Hero Dies
Manchester United legend Bill Foulkes died last Monday morning at the age of 81.
Foulkes was one of the survivors of the Munich air disaster in 1958, the United captain and defender went on to win the European Cup ten years later. Foulkes played for legendary manager Matt Busby at Old Trafford, playing as a regular while still working as a coal miner at Lea Green Colliery. After the Munich tragedy, an air disaster involving the team and a number of supporters and journalists in which 23 died, he took over the captaincy and became the leader of the ‘Busby Babes’. He spent his entire career with United. Foulkes played for United for nearly two decades and his 688 appearances for the club have been surpassed only by Ryan Giggs, his old team-mate Sir Bobby Charlton and Paul Scholes. United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward paid tribute, saying: ‘Bill was a giant character in the post-war history of Manchester United. He was a very gentle man, who I was privileged to meet on several occasions, including most memorably with his team-mates at the Champions League final in Moscow, 50 years after his heroics in the Munich air crash. Bill’s contribution over almost 700 games and nearly 20 years will never be forgotten. The
thoughts of everyone at the club – directors, players, staff and fans – are with Bill’s family.’ In 1968 when Bill helped United win the European Cup at Wembley alongside footballing legends like Charlton and George Best playing a starring role in the semi-final, scoring the winner against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.

teaM spirit is an essential ingredient for a winning side and CD tenerife are brimming with it. six players born on the island started this stirring 2-1 home win over Rael jaen and the work rate and never give up attitude made the difference. the master chef himself alvaro Cervera knows how to keep the pot bubbling by clever use of his squad and envious eyes will soon be trained on the coach as well as his players.
Aridane and Bruno were fit again and returned to the attack and central defence with little disruption to the flow of the team. Aridane won over more of his doubters with a strong display that included plenty of tracking back to help the defence. That meant a wider front role again for hot property Ayoze but he is maturing quickly and used his pace and awareness well and has started to shrug off some of the more robust attention he is getting. Star of the show this week was Suso, he skinned the Jaen defence time and again, he took over from Aitor Sanz after good work from the midfielder and had the goal in

his sights when Servando pushed him over and gave up a penalty. Ricardo stepped up and made it 1-0 while the already booked Jaen defender wondered how he hadn’t got sent off. The visitors included former Tenerife favourite Kitoko, his game only lasted until a 37th minute injury, something of a mixed blessing as the versatile midfielder and defender was struggling at full back. If anyone was going to ruin the party it was Jona, the top scorer for Jaen but his finishing was surprisingly poor and when he did get teed up properly he found Roberto in top form in the home goal. Cascon fancied his chances in the air just
tenerife are ready to take on UD Las Palmas in santa Cruz at 8pm on Wednesday 4 December.
The Pios as they are “affectionately” known are riding high in third place with CD Tenerife rising out of the relegation zone after a poor start but form often goes out the window when these teams meet. Several hundred Las Palmas fans will make the short crossing from Gran Canaria helping to push the crowd to near the 23,000 limit. If you haven’t got your ticket you can watch it on Canal Plus but don’t sit too close it might reach out and bite you.
before the break but Roberto made the ball his own as he punched it firmly away. Cervera made a double swap part way into the second half, off went Ricardo and Cristo as Ros and Rivero took to the pitch. The testing time came when a left side break and a high cross was met by the head of Alvarez to tie the game. This is where character comes in, Tenerife wanted the win so much and chased for every ball, Rivero was taking some teasing corners and a short one caught Jaen out as Ros delivered a lovely glancing header at the near post to make it 2-1. With 15 minutes left there was time for Jaen to hit back but they
had no answer to Tenerife and wilted under the sustained pressure, Alvarez and Gaitan in defence didn’t know what day it was. Rivero had the keeper in a quandary as his late corner threatened to sneak in under the bar, only a late touch prevented it. The 9,753 crowd poured their applause on Tenerife as they finished the game, the move up the table is slow but the progress in all aspects of play is oh so pleasing. Next stop Girona on Sunday. AYOZE WATCH – Manchester City have jumped to the front of the queue to sign him with Lyon, Borussia Dortmund, and Shalke 04 joining the stampede behind them.

CD Marino Hit Thrills And Skills Form In The North In The Saddle The half built service road up the side of Montaña Chayofita may not have seen many cars but there was loads of horse power on Saturday afternoon as 20 sets of hooves galloped at pace in the Sortija a Carrera.
It could have been another world away from the tranquil Las Vistas beach in Los Cristianos below as a good sized crowd of enthusiasts
After some wavering away form of late CD Marino turned on the style to bring back a 0-2 win from CD Laguna. Murci went close after 25 minutes but it only put off the inevitable when Juanmi gave
them the lead with a header a few minutes later after good work from Balduino. The home keeper stopped Lamine from doubling the lead before the break as Marino dominated the game. The second half saw the
struggling Laguna side fade, Murci ensured the points with his goal after 62 minutes to put Marino back in the promotion chasing pack. This Saturday there’s a local derby at the Playa de Las Americas stadium as CD San Isidro come calling 8pm kick off. Entry is just 8 euros with kids getting in free.
Iberostar Tenerife Pip It In Last 7 Seconds
With their new name and sponsor Iberostar Tenerife basketball team needed a home win, and what a thriller it turned out to be as they beat Gipuzkoa 76-75.
There was a stirring start to the match as Ricardo Uriz was honoured for reaching his 250th game in the yellow vest. The two sides were neck and neck all the way with quarter scores of 23-21, 13-17, 20-20, and 20-17.
Blagota Sekulic top scored with 15 points followed by the main man Uriz with 11. With just 49 seconds of the game left Tenerife were 74-75 adrift but a superhuman effort, spurred on by the 3,817 crowd , saw them level setting up Nico Richotti to grab the winner as the clock threatened to count them out. This weekend they are away to Unicaja. Bad news on the injury front, Juanpi Gutierrez is out for 4 to 6 weeks with a muscle injury in his right leg.
enjoyed the free event staged in collaboration with Arona Deportes. The main event was to snatch coloured ribbons in mid gallop from a frame over the road, a demanding test of rider and horse. Several made it look easy but keeping tight in the saddle while reaching above head height took great judgement. This was followed by more traditional racing with the events combining to decide how the trophies were shared out. The horses got their rewards in the form of food prizes.
Tri Tenerife Sur
You will need to be an early bird to catch the 129 contestants as they head off for the Tri Tenerife Sur half endurance triathlon. They will be leaving Las Vistas beach in Los Cristianos at 8am on Saturday 30 November for a 1.9 km swim, a 90 km bike ride, and finally a 21 km run.
Half endurance doesn’t really cover the scale of the challenge involved, it’s going to be done at a frantic pace with some of the best athletes around taking part, Frederick Van Lierde of Belgium is a long distance triathlon champion and he will be one of the favourites. After the swim of around 75 minutes has woken them up, the bike ride is an uphill slog from the beach to Adeje, Guia de Isora, Chio
Sarah Teelow RIP
I was saddened to hear that 21 year old Australian water ski racer Sarah Teelow was killed in a race back home near Sydney last weekend. Sarah won the F2 category in Septembers World Waterski Racing Championships in Puerto Colon.
The tragedy happened in the 112 km Bridge to Bridge Race on the Hawkesbury river where racing speeds get up to 140 km per hour. Sarah came off just after the start and was rushed to hospital but died soon after. In an interview after her title triumph Sarah told The Tenerife Weekly how she had been on water skis since five and skied since she was 13. Just a month before coming to Tenerife Sarah had broken a rib but rushed back to take the crown and she was eagerly looking to move up to an even tougher race category.

IFa has rejected an appeal from Ukraine against the decision to make them play their first home qualifier for the 2018 World Cup behind closed doors, in an empty stadium. The punishment was dealt in September after there were numerous incidents of racist behavior by supporters during a 2014 World Cup qualifier against San Marino. World football’s governing body has also banned Ukraine from hosting games in the Arena Lviv stadium for the duration of the qualifying competition, fined the Football Federation of Ukraine (FFU) £30,400 and warned the body over its future conduct. The decision was announced in this statement; “The FIFA Appeal Committee decided to reject the appeal lodged by the FFU and confirm the decisions rendered by
the FIFA disciplinary committee with regard to the FFU on September 27 in their entirety. As such, the next home match of the A representative team of Ukraine in the preliminary competition for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia will be played without spectators. In addition, the A representative team is banned from playing in the Arena Lviv stadium for the duration of the same competition. The FFU is also ordered to pay a fine of 45,000 Swiss francs (about £30,400) and has been warned as to its future conduct. When rendering the decision, the FIFA appeal committee also recalled the resolution on the fight against racism and discrimination approved at the FIFA Congress in May 2013, which advocated the need for stricter application of sanctions.”
