he Costa del Sol, Tenerife, and Mallorca were all listed among the top holiday rental destinations for 2014 as Spain swept the board in a best holiday destination competition.

This news comes the same week as industry association Exceltur announced that a record 60.4 million tourists descended on Spain in 2013, as the crisis-hit country looked to the sector to lift it out of its economic doldrums. Britons, Germans and French made up the biggest groups of visitors in 2013. Jose Luis Zoreda, vice president of Exceltur said:

“In 2014, we believe that the tourism sector will be the engine of growth for the Spanish economy,” The 2014 projections are by one of the UK’s most popular holiday accommodation rental portals Alpha Holiday Lettings, are based upon client inquiries and web bookings throughout 2013, which were used to predict the destinations for holiday travel and activity in the coming year. There are seven European destinations in the top 10, the always popular Paris with its historic landmarks and fabulous cultural attractions, is a notable fourth place pick, the UK made top 10 with Cornwall, which made the list at seventh place, but Spain represented almost half of the European

picks, the Costa del Sol ranked highly with third place, behind Dubai and Cyprus. Tenerife came in sixth, while Mallorca rounded out the favourites with a spot in 10th place. Florida and Sydney were the other non-European picks. As well as it’s perfect holiday climate of yearround sunshine and it’s luxurious setting, Dubai’s first place ranking is largely owed to its apparent immunity to the global economic downturn, and also the growing network of Dubai’s Emirates airline is making travel to the city cheaper and more accessible all the time. Still, with 3 spots in the top 10 for Spain and our very own Tenerife ranking number 6 in the world, the future seems bright for the Spanish tourism industry.

ourist numbers are out for 2013 in the Canary Islands and according to data provided by Spanish Airports and Air Navigation (AENA), the Archipelago was visited by nearly 10.6 million foreign passengers in 2013, 4.85

per cent more than the previous year.

The month of December helped to make 2013 a bumper year with 1,063,844 passengers visiting from abroad, 124,239 more people than in the same month of 2012, some 13.22 per cent more. When the figures are broken down by island, Tenerife was

host to 397 185 foreign passengers in December, 36,292 more than in December 2012, representing an increase of 10.06% . The annual figures show Tenerife received a visit from 3,984,294 foreign passengers in 2013, representing an increase of 5 %, with 189,869 passengers more than in 2012.

When asked about the statistics, the Deputy Minister of Tourism of the Canary Islands, Ricardo Fernández de la Puente, said ” the tourism sector performed very well in the fourth quarter, closing with record numbers and moreover sector forecasts point to this trend carrying on for the rest of the winter season.”

NEWS ON 30m to Be Spent on tenerife THE ROCK “renovations” in 2014-15 The woman who suffered serious burns in an explosion at the four-star Bahia Principe hotel in Costa Adeje, is making a gradual recovery after being moved out of intensive care on Tuesday. Holidaymaker Kirsteen Hughes, aged 37 and of Fernside, Radcliffe, was badly burned when a food heater exploded at a poolside bar. She sustained serious burns to her face and scalp in blast on December 27 and spent 11 days under intensive care at the burns unit of a hospital in Santa Cruz. The incident also left eight-year-old daughter Robyn Anne with moderate burns to her neck and ear, with Kirsteen’s husband Stephen and a Belgian holidaymaker treated for minor injuries a 38-year-old woman was killed overnight in Guaza in what is apparently a case of domestic violence. Her killer, who police say is her 31-year-old partner, fatally stabbed her and then attempted suicide by throwing himself off the roof terrace of their apartment block. He is now in Candelaria hospital in critical condition, under police guard. Police say that this is the first “violencia de genero” case in the Canaries in 2014. a 38-year-old cyclist is in hospital in critical condition with head injuries after colliding with a car in El Tanque, the municipality next to Santiago del Teide. He was treated by a doctor and nurse from the El Tanque medical centre immediately after the accident and then transferred by helicopter to Candelaria hospital where he is said to be fighting for his life. sadly, salvamento Marítimo found the body of the windsurfer some 2.5 miles off the Arona coast on Wednesday. The poor man has been taken to Los Cristianos where the Guardia Civil were waiting to take over. Search teams were in operation since Monday evening looking for a 34-year-old Ukranian windsurfer who disappeared while windsurfing in El Médano around 6pm. The alarm was raised by a lifeguard, and this coincided with the man’s family calling emergency services themselves to report his disappearance. Salvamento Marítimo mobilised a helicopter and lifeboat, with the search resuming Tuesday morning with land search and rescue teams, and a GES helicopter, joining the sea and air efforts. on Monday, the 13th, from 12:30 pm a press conference took place at the Palacio Insular Noble Hall to serve as a presentation of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the new brand that will promote the capital as a destination for conferences. The philosophy of this project is to make Santa Cruz become a premier destination capable of hosting all types of events, with profitable infrastructure and facilities in the city. The event was attended by President of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, the mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, Vice President of the hotel employer Ashotel, Gabriel Wolgeschaffen, the council responsible for Development Society, Florentino Guzman CEO Tenerife Tourism, Miguel Angel Santos and the director of this initiative, Inaki Dominguez. The adeje council has invited children from local schools to get to know their heritage a little bit better, and this is particularly interesting for families who have come from other countries as it is a chance for the children to learn something more about where they are growing up, information their parents may not have access to. This next generation of Adejeros and Adejeras have been visiting different historic sites and buildings in the town as part of the ‘This Heritage is Ours’ programme designed for students from primary and secondary schools in the borough. The visits have been to the Canarian library and other historical buildings to learn more about what they have to offer, services and organisation. In this way the young people learn what cultural heritage means, why it’s worth preserving and the technical and economic difficulties that often hamper that conservation. Certainly one group of eight year olds who visited the Canarian library and were treated to a talk about the Guanches came home full of enthusiasm and a desire to learn more and read more about the island that is their home. They also visited the Casa Fuerte, the town’s Church and the Convent. Particularly for parents who are not Canarian but who have chosen to live here this is a great aid in helping our children appreciate the multicultural backgrounds they have, and no doubt we will soon be learning from them

oME 30m euro will be invested in Tenerife throughout 2014-15 to continue the regeneration of the main tourist areas. The injection of funds will be possible thanks to an agreement between the Cabildo, the ayuntamientos of santiago del Teide, adeje, arona and Puerto de la Cruz, and the hoteliers’ association ashotel. President of Tenerife Carlos alonso said that Tenerife was a national “reference point” in this type of agreement, which would see streets, beaches and other tourist spaces regenerated. he stressed that between 2007 and 2013 some 63.8m euro had already been spent on improvements in the four municipalities which, between them, accounted for some 90% of tourist beds in the island.

In Arona, the planned renovations will amount to an expenditure of some 4m euro covering five projects: parking spaces in Avenida Rafael Puig and the City Center plaza, the football grounds, Boulevard Chayofa, and landscaping for the TF1 border and junction 28 (Las Américas). In Adeje, money will be allocated to Calle Unterhacing in El Duque (the road down to the beach), the access to La Caleta from Fañabé, and the second phase of Calle Londres, works also

amounting to 4m. In Puerto de la Cruz, where investment of 2.7m will be made, works will be carried out to extend Calle de La Hoya, renovate the San Telmo promenade, and Calle Quintana (where the Hotel Monopol is). In Santiago del Teide, improvements will be made to plaza Bouganvilla, the mirador de Los Gigantes, the second phase of playa de los Guíos and the first phase of playa de La Arena. The total for Santiago del Teide’s works will amount to just under 3m. Beaches, including Martiánez in Puerto de la Cruz, will see a total investment of 5,1m, whereas the Los Tarajales beach in Los Cristianos will be allocated 11.7m, and will involve a complete change of image for Los Cristianos bay. This project, said Sr Alonso, depended on agreement from the department of Costas, but the money was there ready to start at the point Costas gave the go-ahead.

few weeks back i wrote an article about the Fairytales of spain, i enjoyed writing it so much and it was very well received so because of this, and because i barely scratched the surface of the subject, i decided to do a follow up.

The Water of Life is a Catalan fairy tale. There were once 3 brothers and a sister who through hard work became rich enough to build a magnificent castle. But an old woman told them they should also build a church, so they built a church even more spectacular. Then an old man told then they needed a pitcher of the water of life. The oldest brother went on a quest for it and the old man gave his siblings a knife that would shine if their brother was safe or turn bloody if he was hurt. Meanwhile a giant told their brother to pass mocking stones without looking back and he would find his treasure. But the stones made him do angry he turned to shout at them and was turned to stone himself! Seeing the knife turn bloody both brothers tried and were also turned to stone. On the sisters turn she resisted

She helps it but loses her cows so her master beats her and sends her to herd donkeys. A year later the same happens and upon losing the donkeys she is beaten and left to look after pigs. The third time she waits to see if the pigs return, sat in a tree she watched a man come down the path and disappear behind a rock and a s she waited for him to reappear, the lion came out instead, she asks the lion who says he was a prince, enchanted by a giant who also stole her animals and the only way to save him and get the animals back is to present the giant with a cloak made from a lock of hair from the princess. After working for the princess she gets the hair in return for her finding a prince for the princess to marry. makes the cloak and when the giant asks what reward she wants she begs him to turn the lion back into a man. The giant says if she kills the lion, burns him and scatter the ashes into the water, the

After the lion tells her to do it, it works and the prince asks the girl to marry him, devastated she weeps telling him she promised him to the princess, but on arriving at the palace the princess sees it’s her own brother! La hormiga y la cigarra (The ant and the grasshopper) is one of the most popular fairy tales in Spain. Both the young and the old know about this tale, it provides a moral lesson about the virtues of hard work and planning for the future and has been told for many years. “Once there lived an ant and a grasshopper in a grassy meadow. The ant would work hard, collecting grains of wheat from the farmer’s field far away. The grasshopper would sit around all day singing. He would look at her and laugh. ‘Why do you work so hard, ant?’ But the ant would ignore him. Summer turned into autumn, and autumn become winter. It became freezing cold outside. The grasshopper didn’t feel like singing any more. He was cold and hungry. He had nothing to eat. ‘Ah – I shall go to the ant and ask her for food’. So off he went to see the ant. ‘Hello ant! Here I am, to sing for you, while you get me some food’ The ant looked at the grasshopper and said, ‘All summer long I worked hard while you made fun of me, and sang. You should have thought of winter then! It is wise to worry about tomorrow, today!” So, I hope you’ve enjoyed this 2nd installment of Spanish Fairy Tales as much as I’ve enjoyed finding them!

ErE’s a chance for anyone who wants to see a bit of Canarian tradition without having to leave the beach! The Fiesta of san sebastian in la Caleta is held on sunday 19 and Monday 20 January, and involves horsemen riding into the sea, and pastoral farmers dragging their goats and sheep into the water, for the animals to be blessed.

The event’s draw makes it almost more a spectacular tourist event than a religious one, but despite the tens of thousands of people who turn up to watch it, at its core is the celebration of a fiesta to San Sebastian, the saint who can ward off plagues, and so keep animals, and humans, healthy throughout the coming year. Details of the events are on Adeje’s web site adeje. es, but the main ones are a procession and fireworks followed by music on Sunday night from 7pm, and the blessing of the animals on Monday around midday after a mass in the church. Get there early … and just follow the crowds!

he financial vice-president, Efrain Medina, looks forward to the participation of outstanding athletes on the catwalk to support the textile sector.

More than forty models from Tenerife and the Canary islands will work in fashion shows to be held from 6 to 10 February at the Art Gallery Recova in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Young Designers Contest VI and professional Fashion conferences organized by the Cabildo of Tenerife. This week the first of the casting took place to choose the models participating in parades. The vice president and economic advisor insular Employment and Economic Development, Efraín Medina, said that, one of the novelties of this edition would be the Canarian outstanding athletes parade during the professional fashion shows, supporting the textile industry of the island.

Medina said that this is “an opportunity for the companies that belong to the program Tenerife Cabildo Fashion to give out their products, promote and market the internal market on the island and in the Canary Islands in general.” All efforts are made to publicize the collections and the most important trends in the textile industry which are exported all over the world. Medina also said over 30 parades are to take place where participants, designers and companies will have the opportunity to market and promote their collections. The financial vice-president said that it is a professional gateway whose main objective is “marketing and to create and maintain jobs.” Both the Young Designers Contest and professional fashion conferences will be held in la sala de arte la recova de Santa Cruz de Tenerife in collaboration with the Department of Culture of the City of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

NhaPPilY, the search for Victor Teni, the missing athlete was officially called off on Monday. The hard decision was taken after a meeting of all the forces involved in the rescue effort. Monday was the 12th day of searching, and Victor has been missing, for over a fortnight. From now, security forces will continue their investigation following the report of his disappearance, as is routine with any denuncia for a missing person, but the active search will end at dusk today. The Canarian government thanked all the teams and volunteers who have spent the last week and a half looking for Victor: Guardia Civil, Grupo de

Emergencias y Salvamento, Unidad Militar de Emergencias, Ejército de Tierra, Bomberos Tenerife, AEA, Cruz Roja, Protección Civil de Candelaria y La Laguna, Federación Tinerfeña de Montañismo, Parque Nacional del Teide, Teleférico, Parador Nacional del Teide, Guardas de Caza and the Cabildo’s environment department. Despite the search being officially called off, the Guardia Civil says the force itself will continue a constant and minute search for Victor in the Teide area. The investigation into his disappearance remains open, and despite some reports that the investigation

might be a “criminal” one, police say that this is not correct and that they are working on the assumption that his disappearance was accidental. Today, the Grupo Rural de Seguridad has been combing the area, and their efforts will be augmented by the arrival of two dogs trained specifically in searching for people missing in mountain areas.

But if you’re not registered, your voice won’t be heard. You might think that what happens in Brussels or Strasbourg is too far away to affect us here in the Canary Islands, but nothing could be further from the truth. In-

The closing date for inclusion on the electoral register is January 30th. Who can vote? Citizens from the following countries, resident here in Adeje, are eligible to vote: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark, Slovenia, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia,

Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the UK, the Czech Republic, Romania and Sweden. However, to make sure you can exercise your vote you must be registered on the electoral census and the residents register – the ‘Padrón’– and have indicated your wish to vote in Spain in these European elections – this is to ensure that you don’t vote in more than one country. (Elections are taking place over a number of days, so theoretically it would be possible). The Electoral Census office has sent letters to many European citizens who have not already signed on the electoral census. If you have received such a letter all you have to do is sign it and return it to the indicated address. However, if you haven’t received any communication but would like to vote, call into the Adeje citizen’s bureau (OAC) in the Town Hall and say you wish to register on the electoral census for

the right to vote. You must be on the municipal residents register (Padrón) to do so. If you are not on the Padrón you can do this at the same time. You will need to bring your passport and your resident’s certificate ensuring that your address is up to date. There will also be a short period of time, still to be determined, after the closing date, when you can check that your details have been properly registered. As times are changing, so are we. Since the last European elections, the rules of the game have changed. The European Parliament now has more power, both to set the political direction of Europe and over the day-to-day decisions which affect us all. A more powerful European Parliament means more influence for everyone, more ability to deal with our problems, more ability to change what needs changing, more assertiveness to conserve what we want to keep. Your vote really counts, so make sure you have it, and use it.

48-YEar-old walker, said to be a foreigner in spain, who was transferred to hospital with a serious and open head wound after falling some five metres while hiking in Masca has died on arrival at hospitén sur.

He was rescued shortly after noon on Tuesday in an operation which involved a search and rescue helicopter, bomberos and paramedics, and he was flown to Hospiten Sur. T Was something i’d never really given any thought to before but since taking over as editor i find i’m increasingly having to deal with people on the phone who speak spanish or who can only speak a little English, i’m not going to lie, my spanish conversation skills aren’t brilliant, i’m far better at reading and writing but when i’m spoken to i often find i’m still translating their first sentence in my head when they are already on their 10th! One thing I’d never had to think about was email addresses in the native tongue, for me @ is simply @, but now, almost on a daily basis I’m finding myself having to take down or give out email addresses on the phone and it’s amazing how many grammatical symbols that you’ve never considered “words”

ViVo will be holding their next Tea dance of the season on saturday 25th January. This time, however, there is a twist! Professional dance teacher beverley is offering 30 minutes tuition from 1pm, the first half hour is for people who have not danced before,

or have two left feet, so you can brush up your dance steps before the start, at 1.30pm.

This is the council that said it had nothing to do with contracting lifeguards or beach services, that it was completely illegal to pay the existing lifeguards their back pay because the council never employed lifeguards, and that a new contractor had to be in place before the council could employ lifeguards … So there you have it. There’s a job going working for Arona Ayuntamiento as a lifeguard. Any takers? This is farce. Except no-one’s laughing.

Lucy was the worst of the three, with only 5% vision at her worst time. Unfortunately she walked through the embers of a fire, unable to see the danger, and has lost 2 toes on one foot. Her eyes are now good however, and despite everything she has been through she is an absolute sweetie. Her foster carers can’t keep her any longer so we really need to find a home where she will receive the love she deserves. Please can you consider Lucy? If so call Sue on 629 388102. Don´t forget the oldies. Sadly, over the past few days we have taken in several

dogs of 10 years old or more, which is a crying shame. One wonders whether a Christmas puppy has taken the place of a senior member of the family, simply cast aside with the wrapping paper. A 12 year old Yorkie came to us via the police of San Miguel who is now thankfully adopted; a 10 year old blind schitzu was abandoned in Granadilla to fend for himself and an 11 year old poodle cross found by one of our customers and her dogs in a deep ditch, infested with parasites, maggots and fur so matted she could barely walk. The latter two are being fostered but efforts to locate their ”owners” are proving

fruitless. Please consider taking care of an old dog. Imagine how the above three must have felt, in family homes their whole lives only to find themselves alone and unloved. Abandoning any dog is unforgivable, but at this age it is a heartbreaking crime. We normally charge an adoption fee of 110 - 140 euros for younger healthy dogs but can be far more flexible with the over 10´s and can even offer ongoing vet care. On November 9th Patricia Rodríguez Yurena was chosen first runner-up Miss Universe, in a contest that was held in Moscow. This is the best position that Spain has managed since 1985, when Teresa Sanchez was also runner up. Amparo Muñoz, in 1974, was the only Spanish to win the title. The financial vice-president, Efraín Medina, greeted Yurena Patricia Rodríguez, in a ceremony held at the Palacio Insular Noble Hall to numerous media and some relatives, since this is her first public appearance after graduation. Also present were

Jaime González Cejas, mayor of Granadilla, municipality where Patricia was born. Representing Tenerife, she won the title of Miss Spain six years ago but could not participate in that Miss Universe as she had not turned 18. In this sense, Efraín Medina said that “life always gives a second chance” and “Patricia got it”. Also, he thanked the affection with which she took the name of Tenerife and the Canary Islands, “She has been a true ambassador for the island in the world,” said Patricia Medina who spoke of the promotion of Tenerife she had brought to Russia. The runner up to Miss Universe was happy for the achievement made. “For me it has been an honor and pride,” she said. Patricia Rodriguez Yurena

Last year a total of 140,000 Russian tourists visited Tenerife, a figure that represents an increase of 25.5 percent over the previous year. The growth of this market are still very important to the Island last summer and stood as the fourth source of tourists for Tenerife, with a share of 4.3 percent. From January to September, visitors from that nationality had increased by 31.1 percent.

Gambia joins the project Foundation for Tropical Diseases

This year’s almond blossom walk organized by Santiago del Teide Ayuntamiento will take place on Saturday 1 February. As usual there will be two routes, a short one of three hours from Valle de Arriba and a longer one of four and a half hours from Santiago del Teide’s town plaza. The short route is said to be of low-medium difficulty, whereas the longer one is of high difficulty. Both routes will leave in groups from 8.30am, and require walkers to register in advance at a cost of 5 euros, email to cultura@santiagodelteide.es.

This visit is part of the activities promoted by the CEI Campus of International Excellence in their specific area of Biomedicine, and also allows to enhance the activities of the Atlantic Platform for the Control of Tropical Diseases and Research (PACIET ), involving over 20 science centers in different countries and maintains training measures, epidemiological studies and field specific actions for the control of tropical diseases. The Gambian Health Minister appreciated, in his meeting with the Minister of External Action, the “key role” played by the Cabildo in the creation of the Foundation, with the support of Unesco as a world leader in research to eradication of tropical diseases. The Canary Foundation for Tropical Diseases Control, whose honorary president is the first president of Senegal, Macky Sall,

with the participation of a twenty countries in South America, Africa and Europe, which have subsequently acceded new centers of Ethiopia, Senegal, Colombia, Peru, among others. This platform works in training professionals, conducting research and epidemiological studies, clinical trials and field specific actions for the control of tropical diseases. Collaboration between Tenerife and Gambia will include different projects such as the creation of laboratories for the monitoring and investigation of these diseases, the training of staff and the generation of specialists able to lead research projects, among other issues. In addition, the Minister Delia Herrera wants to expand cooperation between Gambia and Tenerife.

he adeje councillor for heritage, desiderio afonso ruiz has uncovered, through interviews with some of the borough’s older residents, a relatively unknown story from the 1950s regarding a flash flood during the Feast of san sebastián, celebrated on January 20th. as has always been the tradition, and continues today,

hundreds of pilgrims walk with the statue from adeje to la Caleta, through fields and barrancos. “At that time the day of San Sebastián dawned bright and sunny, with people, animals, and carts taking part in the pilgrimage, when suddenly, around about midday, the skies clouded over and it began to rain with a fierce intensity. The barranco became a river, and many of the pilgrims were caught unawares.

One family were trapped on what had become an island in the middle of the barranco, and the level of the water had risen so quickly there was no way to save them. The Guardia Civil tried to throw them a rope to help pull them out but were unable to reach the family. The water was also rushing down the barranco with such force that people were shouting out to the saint himself to intercede to save the family. …According to the story, when the

picture of the saint arrived at the edge of the river, the waters calmed, “miraculously” and with the aid of a human chain, formed by the men of the party, including Don Antonio the shepherd, the family were saved. Since that day they say that San Sebastián calms the waters”. Councillor Desiderio has investigated the story, and says that as there is no written account of the events that took place, we need to rely on

oral sources. This story has passed, he says, from generation to generation. He took time to speak to a number of the borough’s older residents who have told him that they saw the event first hand, and others who weren’t present but who heard about the event the day it happened. He says we cannot be sure of the exact year of the flood, and that almost everyone he spoke to had a different date in their memory, from 1950

to 1933…”so”, he says “we believe it happened during the first half of the 1950s”. 013 saw over 500 dogs of all shapes and sizes coming into the refuge , many of which have been lucky and found new loving homes whilst others still wait patiently for their turn to be rehomed. 13 lucky dogs this week have travelled to Germany to start their new lives but daily dogs still arrive at the refuge dumped on our streets of Tenerife. so our work continues with your help and support which we greatly appreciate. Accion Del Sol have revised their opening times as from the 1st of February 2014 which are as follows, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 14.00- 17.00 hrs and Saturdays the refuge will be open 13.00-16.00. Saturdays are aimed especially for children but adults are welcome to join in where activities will be organised, the first activity on the 1st of February will be to learn dog agility. You are welcome to bring your own dog or you can borrow a dog from the refuge

enerife honeys have achieved recognition as a European Protected designation of origin (Pdo), the last of the paperwork that was needed to endorse the quality of the product that is produced on the island is complete and now the European Commission has approved.

The insular Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, José Joaquín Bethencourt, expressed his satisfaction with this final endorsement from Brussels to Tenerife Honeys, a quality mark promoted by the Beekeepers Association of Tenerife (APITEN) with support from the Cabildo through the Casa de la Miel. “This is already the final approval of the DOP, after overcoming all the paperwork, which means Honey Island reserves are protected throughout the territory of the European Union,” says the director insular. José Joaquín Bethencourt said this is a boost for beekeepers in Tenerife in defending the quality and personality of the honeys of Tenerife, plus an excellent

he Cabildo redisplayed this week in the digital section of the Museums of Tenerife, ‘behind the glass’ exhibition, the giant squid of more than 10 meters long and 600 kilos of weight, which was found floating in the waters south of the island in March 1994. The squid that is on display at the Mu-

seum of Nature and Man is a replica of the specimen which is preserved in the collection of Marine Biology, and was displayed to the public at the temporary exhibition ‘The fabled Museum’, between 18 March and 31 May 2011. The giant squid is a large cephalopod (up to 20 m in length and one-ton) that lives in the deep waters of all oceans and is the favorite food of the great whales. The section ‘Behind the glass’ comes with the idea of recovering from obscu-

rity those forgotten pieces that, at the time, were selected to form part of the book’ Behind the glass: A view of the Council of Tenerife museums’. It was a work which included a selection of 53 objects, specimens or concepts, by the then directors of the Cabildo museum. The selection criteria were many and varied, from simple aspects such as aesthetic appreciation to its symbolic meaning, its condition became part of the museum’s collection of oddities.

according to police estimates, between 100,000 and 110,000 people demonstrated in the streets of the Basque city of Bilbao last Saturday in the wake of arrests of ETA members. The demonstration was launched after a judge ruled a previous march illegal. All of this came in the context of a police operation during the week which saw eight arrested, including lawyers, with supposed links to ETA. Those arrested were said to be in contact with the around 600 ETA members in Spain’s jails. ETA announced a permanent ceasefire two years ago, putting an end to its 45 year violent campaign which cost over 800 lives and was criticized by many political parties.

The number of registered jobless in Spain fell by 2.24 percent in December, adding to evidence of a gradual economic recovery though seasonal factors played a role in what was the biggest drop ever for the month. The jobless total fell by 107,570 people, leaving 4.7 million people out of work, Labour Ministry figures showed. It was also the best December since 2001 for numbers of newly employed workers registering for social security contributions, Tomas Burgos, Social Security Secretary, told reporters. “(This) is not a coincidence, but rather reflects a series of circumstances which inspire confidence.” The French data protection authority has fined Google 150,000 euro (£125,000) -- the maximum penalty in its armoury -- over failings in the company’s privacy policy. The Commission Nationale de L’Information et des Libertés (CNIL) imposed the penalty because Google’s new privacy policy, implemented in March 2012, does not comply with the French Data Protection Act. The high penalty is justified “by the number and the seriousness of the breaches stated in the case.” Google updated its privacy policy in an attempt to simplify the process and make it easier to understand. Police arrested suspects in some 30 towns and cities across spain, which has an unemployment rate of 26 percent. The gang boss, who was not named, but lived in the southern spanish city of Jerez de la Frontera, worked with accomplices within the social security services.

People who bought the fake contracts were told to pay social security contributions to the gang leader, but that money never reached the government, the ministry said. Wild Horses Return To Spain

t’s been more than two thousand years since these majestic beasts roamed wild and grazed there but two-dozen endangered horses have been brought to an unfenced area of western spain that’s believed to have once been native territory for them. For the first time in two millennia, wild horses are once again galloping free in western Spain, countering what happened when the Romans moved there and domesticated the animals. The endangered Retuerta is one of the oldest horse breeds in Europe and most closely resembles the race of ancient Iberian horses that populated this region be-

fore being domesticated. Four-dozen of these beautiful animals have been released into the wild in western Spain over the past two years as part of a project by Rewilding Europe, a nonprofit group that seeks to turn the loss of rural farming life into an opportunity to boost biodiversity. Retuertas are nearly extinct, with only about 150 remaining in Doñana National Park in southern Spain. Living in a single cluster there, the entire species could be wiped out by any potential disease or calamity. So wildlife experts arranged to have two batches of two-dozen Retuertas each brought to the Campanarios de Azaba Biological Reserve, Diego Benito, a forestry en-

gineer who lives and works at the reserve said: “Our idea is to just let them manage the ecosystem themselves. It’s a wild horse. So it’s in its DNA to roam free in the wild, of course it is endangered — close to extinction — and we’re conservationists, so if one of them gets ill, we could call the veterinarian. That’s not the idea in the future — we’ll treat them like wild horses. But for now they could use a little care.” This is one of a half-dozen efforts sponsored by Rewilding Europe across the continent. Others include the rewilding of European bison, red deer, beavers, brown bears and white-tailed eagles in Romania, Poland, Slovakia, Croatia and elsewhere.

Spain is particularly suited to rewilding. The last Ice Age drove many native European species southward, and Spain retains high biodiversity with low human population density. Benigno Varillas, president of Rewilding Spain says: “In the last 40 years, the bush has increased by more than 4 million hectares. That’s nearly 10 percent of the country converted to bushland, because we lost the human population — they went to the city, to control the bush, you need big animals — herbivores — to trample and graze. People have taken their horses and cows away. So this reintroduction [of wild horses] is very important.”

Another 43 people who have tested positive for the H1N1 flu virus are receiving treatment in hospitals in Aragon, including 18 who are in intensive care The victim died at a hospital in Zaragoza in the region of Aragon where he was being treated for the H1N1 virus, , a regional government spokeswoman said the man had been suffering from other unspecified diseases. The World Health Organisation declared the swine flu pandemic over in August 2010, more than a year after the H1N1 virus that emerged from Mexico sparked panic and killed thousands of people around the world. All of those who are infected with the virus had not received flu shots and they all suffered from chronic disease that had already weakened, regional health minister Ricardo Olivan told reporters.

TarGaZErs across the uK were able to get a clear view of the Northern lights last weekend, as a solar storm blazed above the country. Saturdays predicted display was not as strong as expected, but scientists said there was an 85% chance of activity on Sunday night They can usually only be seen in the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s northernmost countries but Scientists had said the Northern Lights, officially called Aurora Borealis, would be visible across much of Britain due to a mass ejection of particles from the sun which has seen the lights move a lot further south than usual. The Northern Lights occur when solar particles cross into the Earthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s atmosphere and let out burning gases that

produce different coloured lights. These are made up of chemicals including oxygen, which produces green and yellow and nitrogen, which produces blue. The display was not as strong as expected, although scientists say they did come as far south as the M4 corridor, and the wispy green lights were pictured in the skies above north Wales. They were even seen in some built-up areas, including London, although Scotland had the best chance of catching a glimpse. Experts say the best time to see them is between midnight and 3am, and you are more likely to see them away from urban areas and in a spot with good views of the horizon in the north.

veryone knows man’s best friend is the dog, but there are plenty of cat lovers out there, including me, i’ve always had cats and only recently experienced the joy of having my very own faithful hound...well 3 actually, but a new scientific study has confirmed what all us owners of cute, soft, lovable bundles of feline fur, had feared all along, most cats are gits.

Its common knowledge that cats are selfishly indifferent to your wellbeing, and in their minds you are their pets, not the other way around and a recent study discovered that cats can recognize their owner’s voice, but that doesn’t mean they will respond to them. The researchers observed 20 domesticated cats in their homes for eight months, 50 to 70% of the cats acknowledged the sound of the owner’s voice by moving their head or perking up their ears. However, only 10 percent actually responded to the call, by meowing or moving their tails. Your cat definitely hears you calling her name, and can even recognize your voice against a stranger’s, but the truth of the matter is she doesn’t care what you want.

This is because cats have not evolved to become domesticated enough to obey human’s orders. The study suggested that the reason for this is because cats were historically loners who essentially “domesticated themselves.” Also, some cats actually hate the only thing they’re good for: Cuddling. When researching whether cats live better in homes with other cats or in solitary living situations, scientists discovered that petting may stress out some felines, cats who live in a home with other cats are less stressed because it’s easier for them to avoid

being petted by owner. Just face it, if Fluffy avoids physical affection, it’s not her, it’s you. You won’t want to hear this either but just because a cat rubs against you doesn’t mean it likes you, all it’s really saying is that it now owns you. It isn’t making physical contact because it’s trying to say it loves you, but because it is trying to make you its property by putting its scent on you. Cats have an extraordinary sense of smell and they know that each cat has his or her own scent. When a cat rubs

ith all the recent apocalyptic, end of world, day after tomorrow type weather we’ve been experiencing, i thought i’d look into what could survive should civilisation come to an end in some planet wide armageddon. We all have heard the stories of cockroaches and rats being able to survive just about anything, but no matter how tough those two might be, they are nothing compared to these rock hard critters!

The Devil Worm This species of nematode, only recently discovered in 2011

can survive crippling pressure, lack of oxygen and high temperature. It has been found living up to 2.2 miles below the surface of the Earth and blew away the previous record for multicellular organisms by a full mile. These worms spend their lives in total darkness, drinking 12,000 year old water and eating simple bacteria. The Himalayan Jumping Spider This amazing arachnid is the polar opposite of the devil worm, this spider holds the record for the animal that claims residency at a higher point than any other (4.1 miles above sea level). It’s able to survive long periods without food, freezing temperatures, and a distinct lack of atmospheric pressure. The only sources of nutrition available to the Himlayan jumping spider are the tiny insects that get blown up the

mountain by the high winds. The Immortal Jellyfish These jellyfish have the ability to revert back to their infant stages in adverse conditions, making them effectively immortal. There doesn’t seem to be any limit on the number of times that they are able to revert back to their infancy. Unfortunately, they’re highly vulnerable to predation and disease every time they live out their immature, smaller stages. The Red Flat Bark Beetle This insect, which is native to the northern areas of Alaska and Canada, is able to resist temperatures up to, wait for it, -150 degrees Celsius! It actually produces an antifreeze protein that prevents the crystallization of its blood. Its blood is also fortified with glycerol, which further halts freezing. The Pompeii Worm Aptly named, a s they could have probably survived it, these deep-sea worms live exclusively in thermal vents in the ocean floor. Their tails are in the vents, which achieve temperatures up to 176 degrees Fahrenheit. Their heads however, poke out of the vents in order for the Pompeii worms to capture prey. This results in half of their bodies experiencing temperatures over 100 degrees lower. It’s thought that their resistance to heat is

due to a coating of specialized bacteria on their bodies, which may provide a large degree of insulation for the worm. The Tardigrade But the winner has to be this thing, the Wolverine (X-Men not crazy badger type thing) of the natural world can survive basically anything, that and the fact that it’s clearly not from this planet! These millimeter long, segmented animals can survive temperatures between just above absolute zero and 300 degrees Fahrenheit are no problem. 1200 times atmospheric pressure? T h e tardigrade just shrugs it off. It doesn’t really care a b o u t dehydration e i t h e r, seeing as it can g o 1 0 y e a r s without wa te r. 1 , 0 0 0 times the lethal dose o f radiation f o r humans is another non- f a c t o r . When testing the true extent of the tardigrade’s resilience, scientists went so far as to send it to outer space in 2007. The result? Most of the tardigrades that went on the mission came back entirely unscathed. Plus they’re kind of weirdly adorable.

iving in a country where their native tongue is not the same as yours can cause a few problems, sure many of us try our hardest to learn the local lingo, but you can still be caught out, i once thought a daycare centre was allowing kangaroos to look after the children and there’s a word similar to the word for chicken, that you really don’t want to mix up like i did in my early days over here!

But they were nothing compared to some of these absolute clangers from across the globe, and you should of seen the ones I couldn’t print! When the ADA attempted to expand its successful “Got Milk?” campaign into Mexico, it instead accidentally asked “Are You Lactating?” Oddly enough, Spanish speakers did not feel compelled to buy more milk. For similar reasons, Ford’s Pinto failed to break into the Brazilian market. Brazilians just weren’t lining up at the local Ford dealership to buy a car with a name that translates to “male genitals” in Brazilian slang and the Nova, Chevy or Vauxhall didn’t do well in Spain, who wants that “no va” or “doesn’t go”? And the Mitsubishi Pajero? I’ll let you look that one up! The name of an extremely popular soda, which is bottled in Ghana, means “very good Cola,” however, would you fancy drinking a Pee Cola? In Japan, automakers have marketed the Nissan Moco and the Mazda Laputa. Unfor tunately, these product brand names would never export well to Spanish-speaking countries where “moco” means booger and “laputa” sounds like a slang word for

prostitute. Lumia. Nokia’s new smartphone also translates in Spanish slang to prostitute, which is unfortunate, but at least the cell phone giant is in good company. The name of international car manufacturer Peugeot translates in southern China to Biao zhi, which means the same thing. Barf. In Iran, where this detergent is manufactured, that word means “snow.” Fart Bar. In Polish, where this candy bar is made, the name translates to “lucky bar.” Aass Fatol. The Norwegians may think they’re just drinking “draught beer,” but the label will almost definitely make Englishspeaking visitors giggle. Irish Mist, a golden whiskey liqueur produced in Dublin, Ireland. While the beverage has a lovely sounding name in English, when the C & C Group tried to launch it in Germany, they were mystified as to why sales weren’t going too well. “Mist,” you see, is the German word for “manure.”

Several Cryptozoologists are investigating the possibility that the existence of the humongous arachnid species nicknamed “J’ba Fofi” (literally “giant spider”) by natives of the Congo could actually be real!

Nothing has been officially verified but if someone out there proves this thing actually exists, arachnophobia may become even more prolific! Some cryptozoologists maintain that the J’ba Fofi is a species of tarantula native to equatorial Africa – one which may have been common to the area in the past but is nearing extinction due to deforestation. Their theories are supported by accounts by local tribes,

who describe the spider as brown and purple in color, with legs up to five feet long. They are said to be extremely aggressive, with venom powerful enough to bring down medium-sized mammals – so even though sightings are rare, natives avoid them at all costs. According to Cryptid Wiki, one of the first documented tales of the creature dates back to 1938, when a British couple were traveling through the Congo and saw

A struggling bookshop owner in Saltaire, West Yorkshire who posted his poor profits on Facebook has encountered a dramatic increase in sales. David Ford’s usual daily takings at his second-hand store were usually in the range of £14 - one slow day saw him only sell two books: a French dictionary and a children’s book about ponies, earning him only £7.50 for a whole days work. David posted the terrible sales figures on the social-networking site Facebook, which, to his amazement increased his business 4000 per cent earning him £300 in sales in a single day.

don’t begrudge anybody success and that includes simon Cowell. There is no doubt that he is a very clever man and his format of talent shows works well all over the world. i personally don’t enjoy them and think that the shows are now scraping the bottom of the barrel. a couple of years off the box might give some new talent a chance to nurture itself for a new series. Just recently, according to the British press, he has had a brainwave or as he called it “a light bulb moment”. What was this earth shattering idea. I will tell you.

He thinks that the voting should be free. Pardon me, but isn’t that how it used to be on Opportunity Knocks, New Faces and Search for a star. Didn’t New Faces also have a panel where one of them was a bit of a bad guy ….. Tony Hatch and later

Nina Mishkof. I wonder what great new old idea he will have next. Meanwhile I have to say that the glitz and glamour of his show’s finals is always superb and at least they give people a bit of much needed variety on television.

poSH piZZa d id you see the fuss this week in the news when the Mayor of New york used a knife and fork to eat a pizza? The New York press have had a field day with the poor man. They reckon that a proper New Yorker folds a piece of pizza with his hands and stuffs it in his face. Personally, i don’t like handling my food with my fingers unless i am at home but judging by the size of some of the american people i saw when i was on my last holiday there, they just shove anything edible into their faces at any given opportunity.

There are some that feel he should follow the local tradition and eat it with his hands. I think a New Yorker who displays a little etiquette might just be a good thing, however rare!

Here in Tenerife, I always try to stick my finger through the cup handle when I am drinking coffee and I even hold the saucer in my other hand. Some of my Spanish friends laugh at my English table manners but I will drink my coffee and eat my pizza how I see fit and they can all do the same. I suggest that those people who are criticizing the Mayor take a lesson from him and eat like human beings and not animals.

WHAT A LOT OF YACHT YOU’VE GOT

new yacht in its design stages is going to cost around 700 million pounds to build. it is to be called “The streets of Monaco” and will be based on just that with roads and go-carts, a helipad, accommodation for 15 guests and a crew of approximately 70 people. It also includes a scaled down replica of the Monaco

royal palace. If it ever sees the light of day, the buyer will be the proud owner of the world’s most expensive yacht, dwarfing the price of the current record holder owned by Roman Abramovich, whose super-yacht, Eclipse, is said to have cost

about 485 million pounds. I think it is a case of more money than sense but it is their money and their sense so let them get on with it! The owner is unlikely to get much peace wherever he docks as sightseers will be flocking to take a look at it.

he iconic Volkwagen Camper Van was taken out of production at the end of last year. The ridiculous thing is that it was still selling really well. The reason for the closing of production was because it didn’t comply with

a modern safety standards.

Is this another sign of idiotic rules and regulations? I suspect so. The Camper Van has been made in Brazil for over 34 years and the closure of production will have cost a lot of skilled people their jobs. Modern vehicle have very

little character and I think it is such a shame that this old un-fashion conscious motor has lost that battle of survival. I hope that, when they produce a new vehicle, they don’t do the same to it as they have done to the Mini and the Beetle. Why on earth does everything on the road have to look the same?

Scale of universe is Calculated

emember when we believed that the universe was infinite? an endless sprawling mass of space and star and planets? Well that could soon be proved wrong as an ultraprecise new galaxy map is shedding light on the properties of dark energy, the mysterious force thought to be responsible for the universe’s accelerating expansion. A team of researchers working with the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) has determined the distances to galaxies more than 6 billion light-years away to within 1 percent accuracy — an unprecedented measurement. Scientists working with BOSS mapped the locations of 1.2 million galaxies and found that their new measurements support the idea of the

“cosmological constant” — an idea first proposed by Albert Einstein. This idea suggests that dark energy has remained constant throughout the history of the universe. David Schlegel, a physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the principal investigator of BOSS, said in a statement: “There are not many things in our daily lives that we know to 1-percent accuracy, I now know the size of the universe better than I know the size of my house. We don’t yet understand what dark energy is, but we can measure its properties.” Harvard University astronomer Daniel Eisenstein said: “Then, we compare those values to what we expect them to be, given our current understanding of the universe. The better our measurements, the more we can learn.” The new results, presented by Schlegel and his colleagues at the 223rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society,

uMblE in design and crude in construction the PallET is more vital than ever to local and global commerce. Nearly everything rides into the economy on one be it mail beer paint rice flour etc etc etc. PallETs travel around the world from factory to port to the loading docks of the local shopping centers. Many ending up in a local bone yard to be broken up, rebuilt and used again.

So is it the state of the economy or just a fad of fashion that has led the humble pallet into our homes? Sanded down, repainted, reconfigured, stacked, staggered or chopped down, its uses are limitless. Reused. Recycled. Upcycled or Repurposed pallets... Got the idea yet? With an estimated 2 billion pallets being used every day, and many many more just sitting around, there is no wonder so many are being revealed into projects all around our homes. Folks have come up with some awesome ways to recycle and reuse wooden shipping pallets, and let me tell you it’s pretty well inspiring. But before you all go out in search of your wooden troves let me give you a few tips here:1. As a general rule, ask before you

take pallets that aren’t leaning up against a rubbish bin. If they are piled by the side of a building and you are pawing through them-then you are probably stealing. ASK BEFORE YOU TAKE 2. pallets are typically marked with either MB which means they have been chemically treated or HT which means they have been heat treated. Some pallets are also pressure treated with preservatives. You should where possible try to avoid using MB marked and pressure treated pallets for interior and gardening projects to avoid those nasty chemicals if you can. 3. When breaking down pallets for wood be aware of any dangers to your precious tools. There may be hidden nails within the wood, pebbles or stones that have embedded themselves into the pallet through heavy use. Always cut or smooth with care. 4. Those pesky nails...Understand that they are pallet nails and that they are typically ridged and unthreaded. Engineers designed these nails to STAY PUT....the best way to deal with these nails is to drill through the head of the nail with a sheet metal drill bit. 5. Before you do start any project the pallets or part pieces of, will need to be stored or stacked to restore them to a dry state after giving them a thorough wash down. Those who have access to a high pressure cleaner are well served.

Otherwise just use a garden hose or watering can and scrubbing brush. 6. At least every visible/touchable

surface should be sanded and smoothed down before painting. A simple interior wall paint in any choice of colour works well as this allows the wood to breathe. The opacity is usually just fine after 2 coats provided the pallets were cleaned and prepared well. Why not even try a transparent colour glaze. I couldn’t really recommend waxing as the wood in pallets is very absorbent of the oil in wax and would take quite a costly amount for the right effect. NOT PHASED ....then let your imagination run riot. PALLETS are essentially LEGO for adults. They can be turned into just about anything with minimal effort or skill. At a glance wood pallets are ugly, cheap wood that most people wouldn’t bother using for kindling, let alone make a table out

of one. Oddly, thats really the appeal of them. A stacked collection of pallets with cushions or mattress make a ideal modern lounging area for both indoors and garden. Coffee tables/bedside tables/dining tables.Staircases to bookcases.Flower beds to sofa beds.Wine racks to beer mats.Sandpits/garden swings. Headboards to floorboards Go on have a play...lets face it...spoil it and you’ve still got a bit of kindling.

Then you are in for a total treat as like tomatoes, the taste and texture of fresh is so very different from those you buy in store. Plus, there are actually several advantages to growing potatoes in containers. it is easier to protect them from the critters that love them ...and you don’t have to worry about weeds. You do however have to be more vigilant about watering-keeping the soil moist, not wet but damp. Just water until the wa-

ter actually starts to flow from the bottom of the container is a very good guide. You don’t even need to go out and buy seed potatoes, you can instead just lay by a couple of store bought potatoes that you can let sprout in a cool dark place. Potatoes can be grown on your balcony providing the pot is large and has good drainage (vital). A no longer needed tall kitchen waste bin makes an ideal planter...just remember to drill drainage holes in the bottom first. High quality potting soil that is fast draining mixed with a slow release fertilizer is best, followed with a diluted liquid fertilizer every couple of weeks as

they grow. Both these projects are a fun introduction if you have kiddies in the home as they are both easy to do and easy for them to appreciate the art of growing. Both herbs and potatoes are fast growers with some of them also producing flowers for them to look out for....But I believe one of the easiest and most fun veggies to grow on the planet for children are radishes. Bright colourful, fast growers that can be grown in small containers...Oh the joy of making radish faces for their very own salad could not be a simpler way to encourage healthy eating.

EW ThiNGs are more satisfying than growing your own food. The frustration of being a garden lover living in a teeny-weeny apartment with the smallest of patio or balcony can easily be overcome with a little forethought and imagination.

One of the easiest gardening ideas I have ever come across, is the re-purpose of an old shoe organizer. These are superb for planting a collection of mixed leaf salad and herbs, or an assortment of small flowers and green plants. It takes up very

little space and the canvas ones are ideal for needed water drainage, but the plastic variety can easily be pierced a couple of times at the bottom of each pocket; but do remember to add a few pebbles or preferably a little garden membrane before a mixture of potting compost and sand. This will prevent soil from seeping onto the plant below. Simply hang in a space of your choice, be it off the wall or over your balcony and plant your favorite herbs or small plants into the pouches. With the strong sun and adequate water you’ll have a thriving spread of herbs to flavour your favorite dishes and their heady aroma’s filling your space.

Tony Basile, another resident of the area, coaxed Baby out of the boat’s crawlspace and took her in. Baby now whines every time Basile leaves her sight. Unfortunately he wasn’t able to offer Baby a home permanently, but a Florida

couple who heard about her story and had offered to help have now adopted her. ‘Initially, I wanted to just go meet the people that were so kind to rescue her,’ Kathy Klein said. ‘I went and got a dog bed and a blanket and a dog coat because I knew it was going to get cold.’ But as she helped nurse Baby back to health, and trimmed the knots out of her bedraggled fur, Mrs Klein fell in love with the dog. he has survived, and his incredible journey to good health has been documented by his doting father. Saxon entered the world at just 26 weeks, now, he is a healthy eight-month-old boy. Parents Heidi and Edmund Shum, from Llanelli, west Wales, feared their son might not survive, but believe his story will be an inspiration to others.

friend of mine in England shared this recipe with me a couple of weeks ago and said that i just had to try it.

Firstly, just looking at the picture of this recipe made me want to jump into the warm comfort oozing from this moist and citrusy yellow cake. It will take about 35 minutes to cook and 15 minutes to

prep, but your first taste will make it worth the wait. This gets five stars from me with this scrumptious warm dessert that is perfect for the cold winter nights that we are having.

The name really says it all. This comes out

of the oven so warm and oozing with pud-

ding. sort of like a molten lava cake.

Hot Lemon pudding CaKe

ingredients: For Thelemon Filling

175g plain flour 175g Margarine 175g sugar 3 eggs

1 flat teaspoon baking 180ml fresh lemon juice powder 1 tablespoon grated lemon zest

Method:

Grease a medium sized cake tin (round or small) and set the oven to 170°C. Make the lemon curd filling. In a 2 litre saucepan, combine lemon juice, lemon zest, sugar, eggs and butter. Cook over a medium-low heat until thick enough to hold marks from whisk, and the first few bubbles appear on surface, about 6 minutes. When it is ready pour it into the greased tin and evenly spread across the bottom of it. Next place all the cake ingredients into a mixing bowl, and beat them together with an electric mixer for about 3 min-

175g sugar 3 eggs 125g unsalted butter, cubed

utes until light and fluffy. If the mixture is too thick, you can add a little bit of milk to thin it out. If you wish for a little more lemon flavour add some grated zest into the cake mix just before you finish beating. Pour the cake mix over the lemon mixture and then place it in the oven, reducing the temperature to 160°C straight away. Allow about 30 to 35 minutes for it to bake through. However keep checking that the top doesn’t become too brown. Once it’s cooked through serve with lashings of rich custard. Simply luscious.

Cycling enthusiast and one of the world’s most prominent architects Sir Norman Foster, who designed St Mary Axe, known as ‘The Gherkin’, and the new Wembley Stadium, has unveiled plans for a network of cycle pathways high above the streets of London.

The SkyCycle is a 135-mile network of roads that would be constructed above existing suburban rail lines to create new cycle routes throughout the capital, the three-storey high routes would be accessed via ramps at more than 200 points. Each of the 10 proposed routes can accommodate 12,000 cyclists per hour and will improve journey times by up to 29 minutes, the developers added. They also claim the scheme, which would be built over 20 years, providing capacity at a much lower cost than building new roads and tunnels. The first phase is a four mile stretch from east London to Liverpool Street Station would cost an estimated £220m. Road safety in London recently came to the fore after six cyclists were killed on the capital’s roads in the space of under two weeks in November.
