London Paralympics Comes Home At Last Scientist Stephen Hawking challenges athletes to “look to the stars” as he helps open the 2012 Paralympic Games.

The London 2012 Paralympics have started with an opening ceremony that paid tribute to host Britain’s achievements in understanding the universe - and its rainy weather. The Olympic Stadium was filled with colourful, umbrellas, while Stephen Hawking, the world’s most famous living scientist, urged people to look to the stars for inspiration, and disabled ex-serviceman David Rawlins flew a twin-engined Tecnam P2006 light aircraft over the 62,000-strong crowd to kick off the proceedings. After an incredible athletes’ parade, the Queen declared the Games open, followed by a magnificent firework display which erupted from the stadium roof. Continued on Page 3

The Paralympic cauldron was lit in a unique way - starting with Joe Townsend, 24, who lost both legs as a Royal Marine in Afghanistan, flying in on a zip wire. He is aspiring to compete in Rio 2016 as a triathlete. After his breath-taking descent he handed the flame to David Clarke, a member of the Paralympics GB five-aside football team, who in turn passed it to Margaret Maughan, winner of Great Britain’s first Paralympic gold medal at the 1960 Rome Games, who lit the cauldron. To huge cheers, British theoretical physicist Mr Hawking, paralysed and in a wheelchair much of his life due to a rare form of motor neuron disease kicked off the show with a call for a new age of enlightenment. “Look up at the stars, and not down at your feet,” he said. Try to make sense of what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist. However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.” A glowing, celestial sphere descended into the middle of a giant central umbrella, igniting the Big Bang signifying the creation of the universe. Then, to the sound of pouring rain, thunder and Rihanna’s hit “Umbrella”, balloons fell into the stadium, and disintegrated into puffs of smoke. Fortunately, there were clear skies in east London for the ceremony. Mr Hawking, 70, said through a voice synthesiser: “The Paralympic Games is about transforming our perception of the world. We are all different, there is no such thing as a standard or run-of-the-mill human being but we share the same human spirit. What is important is that we have the ability to create. This creativity can take many forms, from physical achievement to theoretical physics.” Led by the three competitors from Afghanistan draped in traditional Pashtun cloaks and caps, the athletes paraded into the stadium to a soundtrack of music mixed by three local DJs. Taking pictures and waving to the crowd, some on crutches, and others in wheelchairs being pushed by their team-mates, the athletes revelled in the moment. Following tradition, the hosts were the last team in. Peter Norfolk led Britain, the last of 164 nations, into the arena to a rapturous reception and the strains of David Bowie’s “Heroes”. ‘Quadfather’ Norfolk, who won quad wheelchair tennis singles gold in Athens and Beijing, proudly carried the Union Flag as members of the 300-strong Team GB

Paralympics GB Begins Hunt For Gold Medals

UK Sport have set Paralympics GB the minimum target of winning 103 medals from at least 12 different sports, with the overall goal of once again finishing second in the medal table. Britain’s Paralympians will be hoping for an early gold rush as the Games gets under way in earnest. Now it is the turn of the competitors, with early medal hopes pinned on swimmer-turned cyclist Sarah Storey, shooter Di Coates and Ben Quilter, who will be going for gold in judo. Paralympics veteran Storey, 34, has already achieved 18 medals - 16 of which were awarded as a swimmer before her switch from the pool to the bike ahead of Beijing 2008. Storey, who was born with a deformed left hand, will appear at the velodrome in the C5 Individual Pursuit, having won the C4 in Beijing. This is her sixth Games and she is chasing her eighth gold. Also appearing on the track is six-time Paralympic champion Darren Kenny, who has restricted movement down his right side following a car crash aged 18. He is defending his 1km Time Trial title alongside fellow Brit Rik Waddon. Di Coates - who at 58 is taking part in British record-equalling eighth games will be gunning for her fourth title in the women’s R2 10m Air Rifle standing event. She is Britain’s most experienced competitor and the star, who has spina bifida, is the only person to have competed in front of a British Paralympian crowd before.

Like the other seven species of sea turtles, the green sea turtle is endangered, with populations declining worldwide. The many threats include habitat degradation, building development on their breeding beaches, ingestion of rubbish such as plastics and entanglement in fishing gear. This photograph is part of the 100 photos chosen from 48,000 entries for the exhibition have been selected for their creativity, artistry and technical complexity. Ryanair crew caught smuggling Cigarettes TWO Ryanair cabin crew have been accused of trying to smuggle £6,000 of cigarettes into Britain in their luggage. Gemma Phillips, aged 26, and Adam McEvatt, aged 28, were stopped by customs at John Lennon Airport, Liverpool, following a flight from the Canary Islands. They allegedly had 13,800 cigarettes in their baggage. The legal amount holidaymakers can bring into the country is 200 cigarettes and 250 grams of rolling tobacco per person. Phillips and McEvatt, both of Liverpool, were formally arrested the following day. They were charged with evading duty tax and have since been bailed to appear before magistrates in Manchester next month.

Ryanair has been quoted as saying that the crew members were off-duty at the time of the alleged offences. A spokesman for Border Force, the enforcement arm of the UK Border Agency, described the allegations as ‘serious’. She said: ‘Two individuals travelling from the Canary Islands carrying excess cigarettes were

stopped at Liverpool airport and arrested on suspicion of being knowingly concerned in the fraudulent evasion of excise duty. They have since been charged and bailed to return to court on 17 September. ‘Tobacco smuggling is serious and increases the tax burden on everyone else. Revenue from cigarettes and

tobacco helps fund public services. ‘Tobacco smugglers are tracked by Border Force and HMRC, and repeat offenders will be prosecuted.’ HM Revenue and Customs confirmed that both were ‘airline employees’ and a border official source at the airport said all cabin crew are subject to the same entry

procedures as passengers and ‘would not receive preferential treatment.’ A Ryanair spokesman said: ‘As this alleged incident is the subject of a criminal investigation, we are not in a position to comment, other than to note that the individuals in question were off-duty at the time of these alleged offences.’

Surfers Hitting The Beach in El Medano MOST people think of the Canary Islands as sun, sand and sea, but they are renowned for their surf breaks. Alex with trophy Aug 2012

Lewis Leadbetter, Will Davey and Alex Bauduin all live here in the Canaries and have been bitten by the surf bug and are now some of the Canary Islands’ most accomplished surfers. Lewis, 18 and Alex, 14, both live in Playa de Las Americas and met and became firm friends with Will 17, from Lanzarote at a Quiksilver Competition held locally back in June 2010. Since then, the three boys have competed and travelled together, not just across the Canaries but also to Europe and as far flung as Costa Rica. They follow the surf reports and travel between islands to stay with each other to improve their surfing at different breaks. All three boys are promising young prospects on the junior surf scene and have a string of impressive competition results. Alex is the current Under 14 Canarian Champion and Will won the title of Under 16 UK Pro Surf Tour champion in 2011 and was selected for the British Junior Surf Team, earning him a place at the ISA (International Surfing Association) World Junior Surf Games that were held in Panama in April this year. Surfing doesn’t come without risks though as Lewis found out this year. After returning to Tenerife from a training trip to Mentawis, Indonisia, Lewis suffered a knee injury and has had to undergo surgery meaning he has been out of action and the water for the last four months. He is itching to get back in and surfing in preparation for the winter surf season fast approaching.

Quiksilver KOTG Will Punta Blanca 1st Sub 21#2

Surfing competitively involves high equipment costs and a large travel budget and up and coming surfers face an endless struggle for sponsorship. Some of the local businesses have been good enough to help the boys out with clothing and materials; K16 and Chancla Surf in Tenerife and El Cruce Surf in Lanzarote. All three boys are lucky to have their

families behind them constantly watching surf websites for announcements of competitions and how they can raise their profiles. Local Canarian competitions are held mostly on Tenerife and Gran Canaria and are run by the Federacion Canaria de Surf (www.fcsurf.es). Last weekend, Playa de Almaciga in the north of Tenerife was

host to the latest competition which of which Alex was a finalist in the Under 16s winning another trophy for his mum to find a home for. The final Under 21s competition of 2012 will be held in Playa de Las Americas in October/November. Mars or Tenerife? Wine Festival ON Friday 31st August, today, book yourself up for the first Great Feast of Wines of Tenerife in the Puertito of Guimar. Wines representing the five wine producing areas of the Island: Abona, Tacoronte-Acentejo, Ycoden-Daute-Isora, Valle de Guimar and Orotava Valley will be available for you to try.

WHY bother going all the way to Mars when you can go to Tenerife and get exactly the same view. NASA’S Mars Rover cost £1.6billion and flew 127million miles over 255 days to reach its destination – then sent back a photo any tourist could have snapped in Tenerife. The Curiosity Rover has just provided this shot of Mount Sharp on the surface of the Red Planet. Scientists are getting very excited about it. They say the layers of different coloured rock on the sides of the mountain add fuel to the theory that water flowed on Mars billions of years ago, and that the planet could once have sustained life. But the US space experts could have got a similar view by hopping on a holiday fight for a fraction of the price and taking a few snaps of Mount Teide on Tenerife. Fair do’s, it wouldn’t have been quite the same, but it would certainly have saved them a few bob. Curiosity is now heading towards Mount Sharp to get a few close-up shots

of the rock layers, but don’t hold your breath. The foot of the mountain

is 6.2 miles away and the Rover will take a year to get there.

Canarian Cuisine is the Sweetest

MARTIN Berasategui does not do office work; keep accounts or other tasks that do not involve cooking. That, he says is for other s to do. “I’m a cook,” he says, a job he has done for over 35 years. He started in the Alexander family tavern in LasarteOria (Basque Country), his true university, where he learned the tricks of the trade at the hands of his father, with a dedication “in body and soul,”

It paid off, he went travelling to see what is eaten in other parts of the world as well as in Spain. He was taught by, amongst others the French chef Didier Oudil (known in France for having led the Café de Paris in Biarritz). In 1986, Berasategui got his first Michelin star with his own restaurant in Lasarte. This week the Basque chef was in the Abama hotel (Guía de Isora) to visit his restaurant team MB and review the daily menus and oversee his other “eye” in Tenerife, the chef Erlantz Gorostiza. In 2010 the M.B. Abama, which

is set in the gardens of the hotel, was recognized by the prestigious Michelin Guide with a star. Since then it has proved popular with the Spanish, Canarians as well as other nationals. To Berasategui, Canarian cuisine has a great personality, he is proud to have put his stamp in the south of the island with his signature restaurant. “The Canarian cuisine is an important part of the Spanish culture, and it bothers me when there are regions of Spain who are shy about talking about their qualities,” he says. “I can eat very well in the Canary Islands for a number of

reasons, to begin with, the quality of the raw material, the climate and the smile of the people,” he says. “Just go see fishermen, farmers, or the excellent tomatoes of this land”. In the current financial crisis, this chef believes in “the forces of air drives the mill” of creativity to the delicate moments in the new projects that create illusions. Berasategui enters the kitchen of his restaurant and embraces his cooks and helpers. He knows he has worked hard to get here. “With respect, energy and innovation “, but warns that innovation has always existed, “since the first tortilla”.

Marc Craig Nominated Best Male Singer MANY congratulations go to Marc Craig, our resident singer as he has been nominated as “Best Male Singer” in the Tenerife Entertainment Awards. Although Marc has been nominated 5 times in the past 5 years, it has always been as part of Best Group. “This is my 6th year as a nominee and it

means so much more to me now that I have been nominated in my own right rather than as a Wildboy”! We wish Marc and all the rest of the nominees in this competition all the very best of luck. The final will be on Sunday 30th September at Castillo San Miguel.

Santa Cruz Becoming “Shanty Town”

THE Spanish press is reporting a developing crisis on the outskirts of Santa Cruz: not a cardboard city, but a real shanty town underneath the Pancho Camurria sports pavilion where 18 people now live in 15 shacks.

Tenerife director of Cáritas, Leonardo Ruiz, says that these are Canarians, not foreigners, a point he stressed to show that this crisis is now literally “hitting home” and that these people have refused the offer of a place in a “refuge” because they prefer to maintain their independence and dignity. They are, indeed, setting up home properly for themselves, with some even

having television. Santa Cruz Social Services councillor, José Manuel Arocha, confirmed Sr Ruiz’ statement, and added that they are eating at the refuge and the La Milagrosa food kitchen in Calle La Noria, but live in their shacks as their only home, where they are more comfortable than they would be under the regime, and indignity, of being a social refuge resident. The shacks are, inevitably, deemed “illegal”, and regardless of the official designation clearly has neither protection from the elements nor security. None the less, they are all these people have now. Sr Arocha says that they will have to be dismantled at some point, and he hoped it would be sooner rather than later; he added that it wasn’t really a

matter for his departmnent anyway but that of Obras y Servicios and the Policía Local. Where these people are to go, it seems, is less important than they do actually go, and that they’re

someone else’s problem. There is a Dickensian feel about the pressure to get the poor out of public view, and to move them on. One thing is clear, however, and that is that it doesn’t really

matter where the authorities want them to go because at some point, in probably the very near future, there will be far more than 18 people to move and 15 shacks to pull down.

Beach storage Lockers in Adeje

TROYA Beach in Adeje, has come up with a novel way to store your belongings, lockers! Now you can stop worrying about your stuff and just enjoy the beach. The lockers were designed by CANARIA, the Box security Services, and made of steel, similar to those installed in banks and post office boxes.

Using these lockers costs just 3,00 Euros per day, have two keys, one of which you keep, another is given to a guard, locks can only be opened with a combination of both keys. Initially only two modules have been installed on the beach, a total of 216 boxes, but more are scheduled if the plan proves to be successful. Council officials have pointed out that with this new service, Troya Beach

becomes the first beach in the world to have a new and modern storage! This system started up approximately three weeks ago. People are now becoming aware of this and each day the number of lockers used increases. People are finding it convenient and don’t have to worry about personal belongings especially ones of value getting damaged or stolen.

No more license permits for bullfighting events THE city of San Sebastian, northern Spain, under the nationalist Bildu mayor Juan Karlos Izagirre, has announced that it will refuse all license permits for bullfighting events in the city as from next year.

the measure and although the Town hall can’t ban bullfighting, it can refuse to issue public licenses to any companies that want to put one on. Also, since all the bullfighting venues in town happen to be public buildings, the Town Hall says that it is exploring options to refurbish and reuse these venues for other sports, respecting, it added quickly, the historic and traditional values of the buildings. It’s rumoured that the Illumbe, the famous bullfighting ring in the town, may be refurbished as a basketball court and used as the new stadium for the Gipuzkoa Basket Club (GBC), who already uses the building when there isn’t a bullfight on.

The nationalist group Bildu has said, and Juan Karlos agrees, that it is 100% anti-bullfighting and looks forwards to the day that it is finally dropped across Spain, and that next year’s “la Semana Grande” of San Sebastian will be, for the first time ever, animal free. Tomato Festival

AROUND 40,000 people from all over the world took part in a gigantic food fight with ripe tomatoes, the popular “Tomatina” festival, in the eastern Spanish town of Bunol. The yearly hour-long tomato war was begun 67 years ago as a game by local youths but it has steadily been gaining greater attention worldwide. European and Asian participants have long been regulars at the messy event, and this year people came to lob tomatoes at one another from Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Latvia, and many other countries. The preparation for the ritual, which is traditionally held on the last Wednesday in August, began Tuesday at sundown with a marathon of parties, dances and concerts that lasted until dawn. After a break for the revellers to sleep and gather their strength- which they did on the grass in local parks or in sleeping bags laid out right on the streets- the excitement among the thousands present started to build as they awaited the arrival of the trucks loaded with 120 tonnes of ripe, deep red

tomatoes and the beginning of the tomato-schlacht that really put Bunol on the international tourism maps some 10 years ago. In the hours before the arrival of the tomato trucks, those present braved the day’s increasing heat and bought food, drinks and clothing at the stands and kiosks that had sprung up along the streets of the Mediterranean coastal town. Many also bought diver’s goggles from opportunistic street vendors as protection

against the acids in tomatoes, which would soon be smashed all over everything and everyone. The “uniform” worn by most people, at least by those who were familiar with the event, consisted of a white T-shirt and shorts or a bathing suit, all specially selected for later use as rags or to be discarded in the nearest basura. Some of those on hand even dared to complete their outfitting with a bit of peculiar head protection: watermelon rinds cut into the shape of

helmets. Also, there were many people dressed in costumes of various kinds: pink rabbits, samurais, cooks, karate fighters and traditional Spanish outfits of one sort or another. As the hour drew near when the tomato battle was to begin, in the narrow street along which the tomato trucks would come, smiles appeared on the faces of the thousands in the crowd. On the dot of 11 a.m., a rocket announced the start of the event and the five trucks loaded with ripe tomatoes appeared and

dumped their cargoes. People grabbed up the fruit and began hurling them at one another and smashing them onto each other, quickly coating everything in sight and creating a red pulpy, juicy mess in the historic town centre with its white houses and building fronts. This year, the tomato war became a cathartic event, given the uncertainty about the country’s prevailing economic crisis, as participants did everything they could to recover their spirits, which have been beaten down a good bit by so much negative news of late. Sixty minutes after the first tomato was thrown another blast of gunpowder signalled the end of the fight, and after things settled down one could see the true extent of the monumental mess. After years of experience with this event, local cleaning crews and residents had once again made the area amazingly spic and span within just a few hours. Meanwhile, the exhausted but exhilarated participants headed to the river and the portable showers set up for the occasion to rinse off the tomatoes that covered them and soaked their clothing.

Dancing in the Streets

PARTY goers filled the streets of west London as the Notting Hill Carnival, Europe’s biggest street festival, was again the place to be over the bank holiday weekend. A multi-ethnic throng milled between the stalls and thumping sound systems, drinking, dancing, and tasting jerk chicken as the smells of open-cooked food wafted through the air. Cloudy weather did not deter hordes from flooding the streets to cheer on dozens of floats and flamboyantly dressed dancers parading through the neighbourhood. An extra 2,000 police officers were brought in to keep order in Notting Hill on Monday, adding to the 5,000 on patrol for Sunday’s Children’s Day. They confirmed that 152 people had been arrested on Monday - compared with 172 on the same day last year. Commander Christine Jones said: “It is relatively crime free when you think how many people are here and what the potential could be but actually, this is a

London celebration of a diverse culture. “People come here to have fun and we’re here to support that.” The carnival was founded in 1964 following disturbances in Notting Hill six years earlier that saw clashes between whites and newly arrived immigrants from the West Indies.

This year’s festivities have largely been peaceful so far, police said, though one 20-year-old man was left in a serious but stable condition on Sunday after being stabbed in Ladbroke Grove and another 35 year old was in a critical condition after being stabbed near the carnival site.

The carnival, known as Europe’s biggest street festival, is now in its 48th year. About one million people are expected to have attended this year’s carnival. Organiser Vincent John, from the Notting Hill Carnival Trust, said the event had been fantastic, with lots of people enjoying themselves.

Giant Panda New Arrival

THE Chengdu Panda Base in China is celebrating the arrival of a brand new baby panda. Mother Yuan Yuan gave birth on Saturday August 23rd to a tiny wriggling cub, her fourth, after just three hours of labour.

The yet to be named cub weighed in at just 137 grams, it will be a few months before it is known if it is a boy or a girl when its fur changes colour.

Pandas are notoriously difficult to breed so it is even better news for scientists as this latest cub was conceived naturally as they can only breed for 2-3 days a year.

Underwater Dancing in a Wheelchair

A DISABLED north Devon woman is preparing for a London 2012 Cultural Olympiad performance, using her specially-adapted wheelchair to perform underwater ballet.

Only 115 days until Christmas!

IT’S not even the end of summer yet, but that has not stopped bosses at Asda from opening a string of Santa’s grottos around the country, four months before the big day. Stores across the country have had criticism levelled at them from parents and communities alike saying that it is ‘too early’ for them to be getting into the festive spirit. Sharon Spencer, a mother-of-three from Gravesend, Kent, said the appearance of grottos was putting an unnecessary pressure on parents being pestered by their children. She said: ‘How can they justify putting up a Santa’s grotto in August? ‘It’s still four months until Christmas and all it is doing is forcing parents into having to explain to their children that they can’t have any presents yet because it’s only August.’ Mrs Spencer, whose children are four,

Sue Austin, who has been in a wheelchair since 1996 after developing ME, is a student at the University of Plymouth and is believed to be the world’s first underwater acrobat in a wheelchair. She developed the chair with help from dive experts and academics. Artist Sue Austin is preparing to show off a prototype self-propelled underwater wheelchair to the public. She will be performing in Weymouth and Portland during the Olympic celebrations as part of the Cultural Olympiad celebrations. She said: “This work is about showing that in spite of working with mental and physical limitations, it is still possible if you have a passion about

six and seven, added: ‘My children have already starting telling me what they want for Christmas, but are expecting it to come sooner rather than later. ‘It puts a lot of pressure on us parents especially given the fact that money is tight at the best of times.’ She is not alone in her criticism of Asda. Many people have taken to Twitter and Facebook to complain, designer Abby Hambletron saying: ‘I was a little surprised to see a Christmas grotto in Asda, you know – seeing how it’s still only August.’ It’s not just shoppers who are unhappy by the rather early appearance of Christmas workers dressed in elf costumes at an Asda in Doncaster were described as ‘rather sheepish looking’ as they handed out flyers. However a spokesman for Asda said that the appearance of Father Christmas was only temporary and part of a savings drive for parents worried about affording Christmas.

something to transcend those issues.” “When we started talking to people about it, engineers were saying it wouldn’t work, the wheelchair would go into a spin, it was not designed to go through water - but I was sure it would,” . The model is powered by two dive propulsion vehicles and steered with a bespoke fin and footoperated acrylic strip. Ms Austin says she first had the idea after learning to scuba dive in 2005. She bought an NHS wheelchair for the project and spent months with her team perfecting its buoyancy. She initially designed flotation aids, but in the end found that simple swimming floats worked better.

The wheelchair, which has patents pending and is as yet unnamed, is already in demand, she said. “We’ve had Padi [Professional Association of Diving Instructors] course directors and very experienced divers saying they would pay to hire it,” she said. “The Oceanography department at the University of Plymouth, where I did a BA [bachelor of arts degree] in performing arts, said it would make their courses accessible to students with disabilities.” There is one problem with the wheelchair however - the frame is beginning to rust. Ms Austin says that ideally the next model should be made of titanium.

Hurricane Isaac Hits New Orleans

THE US city was battered by ferocious winds and torrential rain seven years after suffering under the wrath of Katrina.

Parts of the United States continue to face a battering from what is left of Hurricane Isaac. The massive cyclone weakened to a tropical storm as it continued to grind its way inland from the Gulf Coast, producing ferocious winds and torrential rain. Fears of a repeat of the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina, which swamped large parts of New Orleans and killed hundreds, did not materialise and there have been no reports of any deaths or serious injuries. The city’s mayor Mitch Landrieu said the multi-billion dollar flood defence “levees”, put in place after Katrina, had done their job. He said: “The levee system is fine. There are no risks. It is holding exactly as we expected it to and is performing exactly as it should.” A dawn-to-dusk curfew was imposed in New Orleans, enforced by armed police and National Guard units, amid reports of looting in a city which many residents and tourists have left ahead of the storm. One woman who decided to stay said: “I wish we had gone. It was worse than we thought it would be. I left during Hurricane

Katrina, I usually leave, and this is actually one of the first times I’ve stayed. I think next time I’ll probably go.” Close by, a handful of bars which had remained open were doing good business. Outside of New Orleans, people living in low-lying Plaquemines Parish, a sparsely populated area south of the city, have not been so lucky. Floodwater poured over levees which have not been improved since before Katrina and more than 100 were rescued, including 25 trapped on their roofs or attics. Local resident Jesse Shaffer and his

father plucked more than 20 people to safety in rescue missions using their own fishing boat. Officials warned that the dangers from Isaac were far from over. Rick Knabb, director of the National Hurricane Centre, said: “The slow motion and large size of this system are making the impacts more severe and wider ranging than some folks might have perceived would be the case from a category one hurricane. It’s human nature to think that if I think back to my experience with some past hurricane, if this one’s a lower category, then I’m going to be fine.”

It is estimated that some 750,000 homes have been left without power across Louisiana and officials are warning it could be days before repairs are possible. Damage has also been reported in Mississippi and Alabama and the slow pace of Isaac means the impact could felt for the next 36 hours. On the campaign trail in Virginia, US President Barack Obama sent a message to the Gulf Coast. He said: “Our thoughts are with you. Our prayers are with you. We are doing every single thing that we need to do to ensure the folks down there are taken care of.”

Moors Murder Victim Mum Dies WORLD NEWS

WINNIE Johnson, the mother of Moors murder victim Keith Bennett, has died after a long battle with cancer.

Mrs Johnson, 78, died on 18 August after a long campaign to get her son’s killer, Ian Brady, to reveal the location of his body. Brady and his lover Myra Hindley murdered five children between 1963 and 1965. Keith’s body is the only one not to have been found after he was abducted. The 12-year-old was taken whilst he was on his way to his grandmother’s house in Manchester on 16th June 1964. A statement by her son Alan Bennett said: “She was a much loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and is survived by one younger brother. Winnie fought tirelessly for decades to find Keith and give him a Christian burial”. “Although this was not possible during her lifetime, we, her family, intend to continue this fight now for her and for Keith. We hope that the authorities and the public will support us in this.” Mr Ainley, who had represented Mrs Johnson’s legal interests in the past few years, reaffirmed her beliefs that Brady still held the key to Keith’s burial spot “Over the years, Winnie has insisted Brady is the only person who could put her mind to rest and give her the chance to give Keith a decent burial before she passed away,” he said. Martin Bottomley, Head of Investigative Review of Greater Manchester Police’s Major and Cold Case Crime Unit, has constantly called on Brady to “do the decent thing and tell us where he [Keith] is.” He described Mrs Johnson as a “tenacious and courageous woman” who was “now at peace with the little boy she missed so much” Detectives are examining claims that Moors Murderer Ian Brady may have revealed information about where 12-year-old victim Keith Bennett is buried. Police are currently investigating whether Brady, 74, gave details to his mental health advocate, Jackie Powell. However Detectives checking documents seized from Ms Powell’s home have so far found no letter or any evidence to suggest Brady has disclosed the location of Keith’s body. Police have also

searched the hospital where Brady is being treated but no relevant documents were found. Ms Powell was arrested in south Wales on suspicion of preventing a lawful burial and has been bailed. A police spokesman stated “What we are looking at is the possibility, and at this stage it is only a possibility, that he has written a letter to Keith’s mum Winnie Johnson which was not to be opened until after his death. We do not know if this is true or simply a ruse but we clearly

have a duty to investigate such information on behalf of Keith’s family.” The police were alerted to the possibility of information about the location of Keith’s remains by the makers of a Channel 4 documentary about Brady, who said Ms Powell had told them she had received letters from the killer, one of which was for Mrs Johnson. In the programme, Ms Powell said that “clearly there’s something within the letter that may be able to find her son, I would

suggest”. She added that she thought there “might be nothing in the letter” and, as a result, she had been “in a dilemma” as to whether to inform police. Back in 1987, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley came to the moors to help the police try and pinpoint the graves - on that occasion, they found the grave of Pauline Reade, but they did not find Keith. The shifting landscape has made the search all the more difficult over the years. Police will be looking very carefully at this letter to see if

there is any evidence for them to make a more focused search. In a statement posted on a site dedicated to Keith, his brother Alan Bennett said that “Until some definite information is found regarding Keith’s whereabouts we do not want to raise our hopes too high at this stage. Nonetheless, it is a very important development,” he added. Brady, 74, was jailed for life in 1966 at Chester Assizes for the murders of Lesley Ann Downey, 10, John Kilbride, 12, and Edward Evans, 17. His victims had all been kidnapped and tortured. He has spent the past 25 years at the high-security Ashworth Hospital in Merseyside and has been tube-fed since refusing food 12 years ago. Myra Hindley, who died in prison in November 2002 aged 60, was given a life sentence for the murders of Lesley Ann and Edward and for shielding Brady after John’s murder. In 1987 they admitted killing Keith and 16-year-old Pauline Reade, whose bodies had not been found. Both were taken back to Saddleworth Moor to help police find the remains of the missing victims but only Pauline’s body was found. The director of public prosecutions at the time decided prosecuting Brady and Hindley for the final two killings would not be in the public interest. Police abandoned the hunt for Keith Bennett’s body in 2009 and officers said they would need fresh evidence to resume the search. Last month Brady, who was born in Glasgow, was due to go before a mental health tribunal to consider his application to be transferred to a Scottish prison and be allowed to die. But the hearing was postponed when he suffered a seizure. Last December, Mrs Johnson, from Longsight, Manchester, said she wanted to attend the planned hearing to face Brady, saying she had “never seen him face to face”. But in the days leading up to the tribunal, before it was called off, she said it would be too traumatic for her to attend. Mrs Johnson’s solicitor John Ainley said his client had “always believed that Ian Brady knew where her son was buried. Her one and only desire is to give her son a proper family burial during her lifetime.” Sadly this never came to be, she has, however, at last been reunited with her son.

This Week In Vivo

The big, big happening at Vivo this week was, of course, our Post Wedding Party for Ciaran and Marian. They had been married at a very lush hotel the day before and wanted to celebrate with some of their friends at a BBQ at Vivo.

The colour scheme was requested to be blue, pink and silver, so we recruited the fabulous Balloon Warehouse to come down and transform our pergola on the back terrace into a beautiful, romantic venue, and they didn’t let us down. They decorated our bridges with ribbon and Laid up for the party

netting, styled a wonderful heart shaped balloon archway, strung balloons from every available surface. Sally also made some wonderful “Bonsai Trees” from baby balloons for the table decorations. After adding navy blue tablecloths, the pergola looked absolutely fabulous.

Guests arrived from 7.30pm and the BBQ, with a specially selected menu, started at 8.00pm., Marc Craig sang a specially adapted set for the predominantly Irish guests. They loved it and we had a few impromptu entertainers for the night. The youngsters in the group went off and

played on one of our 18 hole mini golf courses or messed about in the kids park on the trampolines, bouncy castles and carousels, whilst the “grown ups” sang, danced and gossiped the night away. Ciaran, the groom, was amazed that we had managed to please the entire party, not an easy feat, and he was delighted with the way everything looked, the food, “superb” and the general tone of the party. The biggest surprise of the night was how much tea this lot got through, oceans of it and apparently, Adam, one of our waiters, makes the best cup of tea this side of Ireland!

They stayed until 2am. Enough said!

Ciaran and his brand new wife alongside some of their guests also wanted to see Bitter & Twisted, so we booked them into our Saturday night show, Decades Goes to Hollywood. This show is, at the moment, only available on Saturdays and is especially aimed at families with children. With the Decades Dancers, Bitter and Twisted go on a journey of film through the years featuring scenes from 101 Dalmatians, Snow White, Happy Feet as well as some old, old favourites, The King and I, New York, New York, Mary Poppins and James Bond and loads more. The costumes are fantastic and the

choreography is second to none. On arrival you will be served with a Champagne cocktail and luxury chocolates and the chance to have your photograph taken with Bitter & Twisted, if you are brave enough! The show bar opens at 7.30pm and you will be shown to your t a b l e by one of our trained waiting staff, who will also take your drinks order. Our Saturday menu consists of a choice of starters, either tomato soup with croutons or tomato stuffed with rice and tuna, succulent slow roasted pork with a choice of profiteroles or Chocolate and Vanilla Ice Cream Slice as dessert. We do offer a vegetarian menu and, of course, cater to our younger guests with their own especially adapted menu of soup,

chicken and ice cream. Many of our guests have a special occasion they want to celebrate at the

show and we offer to cater for them as much as possible. On Saturday we had the Flinders family of eight from Cheshire who wanted to surprise one of the family members. Darren, who was going to be 40, had decided he wanted no fuss at all and that a night at Decades

19

was perfect. However, his family had contacted us from the U.K. before their arrival and ordered a cake in the shape of a Jagermeister bottle. They brought along some badges and candles and the table was laid up for their arrival. He was absolutely thrilled with the result; he may also have been teased by Bitter & Twisted, just a little! This week we also were extremely lucky enough to be the proud recipients of 4 Carp, very kindly donated by Suzanne Wormald. She had raised them from babies and now they were far too large for her 200 litre tank. They arrived on what we hoped would be a fairly cloudy day amongst great excitement from both staff and resort guests. The fish, now named as John, Barry, Sparkles and Lippy join the fifty or so residents of our ponds and, after a somewhat hesitant start, the four fish went off with their new playmates. Jake, one of the managers at Vivo is an aficionado on fish and was delighted to be “dad” to his new arrivals. We all thank Suzanne for entrusting us with her fish. We will be sending reports on their progress! Why not come on down and see our new arrivals for yourselves?

Formula 1: Belgian Grand Prix

BBC 1 - 12:10 - 3:15 pm Jake Humphrey introduces live coverage of the Belgian Grand Prix at SpaFrancorchamps.

McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton comes into this race with renewed hope of claiming a second world title. The Briton won the last race in Hungary just over a month ago, closing to within 47 points of championship leader Fernando Alonso. Hamilton, who won this race in

2010, finished only just ahead of Kimi Raikkonen at the Hungaroring, and the Finn could again be a threat at Spa. Although he has yet to win a race with Lotus, Raikkonen claimed four victories in Belgium during his first spell in Formula One. Sebastian Vettel won this race last year and will be another driver to watch out for, along with Red Bull team-mate Mark Webber.

Channel 4 - 11:15 pm - 1:05 am Richard Ayoade’s directorial debut is an idiosyncratic coming-of-age drama about a teenage pupil navigating the often peculiar trials of his school and home life while also discovering love. At home, 15-year-old Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) has to deal with parents Jill and Lloyd’s (Sally Hawkins and Noah Taylor) troubled marriage which comes under further threat with the arrival of her ex, Graham, a narcissistic guru (Paddy Considine in scene-stealing form, resplendent with mullet).

Meanwhile at school, Oliver falls for classmate Jordana Bevan (Yasmin Paige). Their chemistry, and the ups and downs of their blossoming adolescent romance, is imaginatively realised, as the hormonallydriven Oliver makes ambitious plans to lose his virginity. Set in an unspecified but recent decade, and based on Joe Dunthorne’s novel of the same name, the film richly conveys the complexities of growing up without pandering to nostalgia or comic exaggeration, instead producing a darkly different comedy drama.

Paul O’Grady: For The Love Of Dogs

ITV 1 - 8:00 - 8:30 pm “Today is my first day with the team at Battersea and I just have to remember one thing. There’s no room at the O’Grady household for any more animals… Don’t let me have anything – no matter how much I plead and beg.” As the proud owner of three rescue dogs, Louis, Olga and Bullseye, PAUL O’GRADY truly knows the value of man’s best friend. An animal-lover through and through, he leaves his beloved pets at home to embark on the experience of a lifetime, to present the ups and downs of life at Battersea Dogs

& Cats Home, one of the UK’s best-loved charities for more than 150 years. There is nowhere quite like Battersea funny, emotional, tear jerking, uplifting and inspiring in equal measure. Paul meets the dogs who come into the home needing treatment, training and ultimately new homes. Every dog has its own story and each dog needs a new place they can call home. It’s Paul’s first week at Battersea. As well as dealing with the temptation to adopt every dog he meets, Paul helps with the arrival of an adorable litter of puppies.

A Mother’s Son

ITV 1 - 9:00 - 10:00 pm Two-part drama A Mother’s Son is written by Chris Lang and stars Hermione Norris, Martin Clunes, Alexander Arnold and Paul McGann. The small coastal town of East Lee, in Suffolk, is thrown into turmoil when Lorraine, a teenage girl, goes missing and is found murdered. Shock and horror sweep the inhabitants of the town, including the newly merged family of Rosie (Hermione Norris) and her two children Jamie (Alexander Arnold) and Livvy

(Ellie Bamber); and her new partner Ben (Martin Clunes) and his two teenage children Rob (Jake Davies) and Jess (Antonia Clarke). Their fast approaching family holiday is overshadowed by the threat that a killer might be present in the midst of their ‘safe’ town. When Rosie finds a stained pair of Jamie’s trainers hidden in his room, her instinct suspects it could be blood. A seed is planted - could her son be involved in Lorraine’s murder?

The Unforgettable... The Sweeney ITV 1 - 8:00 - 9:00 pm The special is a tribute to the 1970’s cop series that defined both the era and the genre. The show features interviews with superstar Ray Winstone and Nick Love, the director of the new movie version of The Sweeney, as well as all the key characters from the original series, including actors Dennis ‘Sgt George Carter’ Waterman; John Thaw’s widow Sheila Hancock, Lynda Bellingham, Alan Ford, Billy Murray and real Flying squad officers from the seventies. Ray Winstone, who actually appeared in the original series as a teenager in a non-

speaking role, described the series as “the programme of the time”. He added, “the great thing about The Sweeney is that they didn’t always win. You never knew until the end whether they were going to get away with it or if the police were going to catch them - that’s what made you want to go and watch again next week”. The show has also unearthed out-takes and behind the scenes material from the series and shot revealing interviews with producers, directors, writers and original production crew.

Have you thought about defying the ageing process by sof tening your fine lines and wrinkles? Wo u l d y o u l i ke t o t r e a t a w i f e / h u s b a n d o r l o v e d o n e to something different as a treat? Living and working in Tenerife has its’ advantages such as a year round tan and the feel good factor related to a more relaxed life style. However, the sun can be unforgiving on our faces when consistently exposed, even when we take the usual precautionary measure to protect it. There is no potion or lotion which can eliminate static lines once they appear and many people are resorting to aesthetic treatments by injection. These procedures designed to soften or eliminate fine lines and wrinkles in an attempt to defy the ageing process and the adverse effects on our faces of living in a sunny climate. Botulinum Type A (commonly known as botox) has been licensed for aesthetic use for many years worldwide and many of us are turning to it as an increasingly popular and more affordable treatment option. The product is used most commonly around the eye area to treat crows feet; the forehead/frown lines and can also be used to eliminate excessive underarm/hand perspiration. The procedure is relatively painless, as a topical anaesthetic cream is applied to numb the area and tiny needles are used to administer. It takes just 10-15 minutes to complete the three standard areas described after a full and comprehensive medical history and a face to face consultation, to ensure the client needs are best achieved. Top Dog Model ITV 2 - 8:00 - 9:00 pm The hunt is on to find Britain’s coolest canine in a brand new show for ITV2, Top Dog Model. Television’s favorite Stacey Solomon, fashion model Lilah Parsons and Hollywood dog agent Addison Witt search for Britain’s most mutterly gorgeous dog with help from guest judge, Britain’s Got Talent winners Ashleigh and Pudsey and voiced by David Walliams. The show brings the glamorous world of modelling together with Britain’s love of dogs. Top Dog Model seeks to find a true doggie star - the new Cindy Pawford, Claudia

Sniffer, Naomi Spaniel or Elle Macfurson perhaps… The pooches will go head-to-head as they are tested for their suitability as models through a series of dog-eat-dog modeling assignments, including photo and video shoots as well as challenges designed to test their poise and behaviour. It’s not just looks alone that will crown our furry favourite, as personality and star quality will need to shine through too. The contest is hotting up as only one mutterly gorgeous dog will land an advertising campaign for a well-known international brand.

Wartime Farm BBC 2 - 8:00 - 9:00 pm In a new eight-part series, historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn take on their biggest challenge yet - to turn back the clock and run Manor Farm exactly as it would have been during the Second World War. They will face one of the biggest challenges ever seen in the history of the British countryside what Churchill called ‘the frontline of freedom’. As well as tackling the trials of day to day living in volatile times, the team will be managing livestock, attempting to

cultivate unused land, tackling new tools and technologies and learning the basics of civil defence, while all the time confronting shortages. The first episode finds the farmers in a new location, a new time period and with a new team member. There is a farmhouse to modernise, strict new rules to abide by and air raid precautions to contend with. The team begin by reclaiming land to grow new crops, whilst Peter works with a blacksmith to design a special ‘mole plough’ to help drain the waterlogged clay fields.

THROUGH THE KEYHOLE By Lynne Leadbetter

Tenerife Properties have been trading on the island for over 30 years. Their offices are located in San Eugenio, in between the Santander and BBVA banks, opposite the car park entrance to the San Eugenio Shopping Centre. Partners are Lynne Leadbetter and Mike Woodhouse, along with Sales Director Rachel Rogers and Secretary Delia Rodríguez Boue.

Mike is a member of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, a member of the National Association of Estate Agents (Overseas) and a member of the Spanish College, known as the Associación Profesional de Gestores Intermediarias en Promociones de Edificaciones. His college number being GIPE 2676 and he has been practicing in Tenerife since 1988. He is also the Appointed Valuer for the Abbey National International in the Canary Islands. Property purchase can be very stressful, particularly if

you are situated 2,000 miles away. Tenerife Properties aims to take that stress away for you. They assist in arranging mortgages, valuations, Spanish bank accounts, NIE numbers, contents and buildings insurance, Spanish wills and even assist in obtaining discounted rates when transferring money. In short, they assist in every aspect of the purchasing and selling process, right through to and beyond the day of completion at the Notary. They also offer an excellent after sales service.

This beautiful family house is a fantastic opportunity offered for sale at a considerably lower price than the current market value. Located in the pretty area of Los Menores, in an elevated position, this lovely house enjoys panoramic views over the South West coast of the island. Set on a plot of 2,100m2. As a detached house, it has its own driveway leading up to the first level on which are located the garages for 2 – 3 cars and a workshop. Going up from the garages you arrive at the garden level with a well-kept lawn and also an Aviary for parrots or birds. This space offer plenty of room for children to run around or for guests to mill around on if outdoor entertaining is something you like to do. There is also an outdoor kitchen and barbecue, perfectly equipped for parties! The next level takes you up to the large heated swimming pool and sun terrace from which you can relax and enjoy the

stunning views. The house itself is built over 2 levels and is a total of 251m2. On the ground level there is a lounge and two bedrooms and one bathroom which could easily be converted into a separate apartment. The main house on the upper level comprises a lounge, kitchen, 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and there is also a large terrace that looks out over the grounds of the property and out towards the sea. Behind the house is an orchard with a variety of mature fruit trees. This is a truly fantastic family home and needs to be lived in to enjoy its maximum potential. It is guaranteed not to be on the market for long at the current asking price of only 525,000 Euros, especially as there is a current bank valuation of over 600,000 Euros. Swinging Hole in CV proposition or keep quiet and hope for the best? Danielle

My last job was a nightmare and I left on very bad terms with my manager. She was a horrible person and I couldn’t do anything right. Now I’m looking for a new job I’m worried to put that job on my CV because if they ask for a reference, I know she’ll be spiteful and give me a bad one. Should I tell them the situation in the interview

The law is very clear these days in terms of employer references. If your old boss tells lies or goes out of her way to throw a spanner in the works, she can be prosecuted. Your local Citizens Advice Bureau will be able to give you the specifics here, but rest assured, you do have rights. As far as applying for jobs and putting together your CV goes, honesty is the best policy. You don’t need to go overboard in explaining what happened, personalities clash all the time and that’s exactly what seems to have happened in your case. Another thing you need to do is to put this whole thing into perspective and stop it from becoming a real barrier for you. Of course any new employer will want to talk about your track history, but that’s just a small part of the interview process. I suppose what you really need to do is overcome this hurdle in your mind and be clear about your stance if questions arise. Good luck, Danielle.

Worried for neighbour

My husband and I went to one of his colleague’s houses for dinner the other night. When we were there the couple kept talking quite graphically about their sex life, which was making me feel really uncomfortable. Then, just as we had finished the meal, they suggested going to a swinging party. I was totally shocked and just laughed it off. Since then though I haven’t discussed it with my husband and I’m worried that he put them up to it. I hate the idea of swinging, but perhaps I should consider it for my husband. Jocelyn Why should you do something you don’t want to Jocelyn? I’ve never truly understood swinging and I know it’s not something that interests me at all! Of course I accept that everybody has their own preference, but

Work hell

I moved into a new council house 3 months ago and ever since I moved in I’ve had to put up with noisy neighbours. I used to bang on the wall and tell them to be quiet, but recently I’ve heard an angry male voice and a woman pleading then banging and crashing. I’m really worried that I’m listening to domestic violence next door but have no idea what to do about it. Terri You have two options Terri. If you suspect somebody is being hurt, you need to call the emergency services and let the police deal with it. Gone are the days when “domestics” are left to

sort themselves out. The police will react and, if a crime is being committed, the offender will be held accountable. As far as the general noise goes, your local council will investigate on your behalf and take specific measurements of the sound levels. If the noise is beyond a certain level, the council can issue warnings and even evict this family if they ignore those warnings. So there’s an awful lot you can do not only to put a stop to any domestic violence but also to ensure you can get some peace in your own home. Help is just a phone call away in both instances!

My life at work is being made hell by some local kids. I work in a local grocery store and I used to love my job, chatting to all the regular customers and looking after the store. But recently a gang of youths have been hanging around the shopping precinct. They throw things at the window, throw things around the store and even steal things. I want to stop them, but I’m too scared. What shall I do? Jamie Pick up the phone Jamie and ring the police. You certainly shouldn’t tackle these yobs on your own; it’s just not worth the risk these days. The news headlines are filled with stories of gangs turning on “have a go heroes” so the risks are very real.

in this case it’s crystal clear that you’re not into it, isn’t it? I’m slightly worried by the fact that you’ve not had the conversation with your husband. For all you know, he may be just as shocked as you but you’ll never know that until you speak to him will you? I’m constantly amazed by couples who simply don’t talk – even when there are real issues to sort out! Sit your husband down and explain exactly how you feel about what was said that night. Stick to your guns sweetheart and, whatever you do, please, please please, forget about just “doing this” for your husbands sake. Trust your own judgement and treat yourself with a little more respect and then hopefully, your old man will do the same!

The government have done their bit in introducing new laws, now the police have no excuse whatsoever. Make that call and keep on making the call each and every time you feel threatened or harassed. I know you’re afraid right now, but once this matter is taken seriously, it wont take long for these kids to get the message. None of this is your fault sweetheart; you’re just unlucky, honestly. You should also write down each and every incident, complete with times and dates and give that to your manager as well as the police. You will get through this, the kids will probably just move on and cause a nuisance elsewhere, which isn’t an ideal solution but at least it should be the end of your nightmare.

PUGH´S PANTRY By Barry Pugh

Whilst working in a luxury hotel in Liverpool in my teens, I had the privilege to work with a very professional highly skilled chef who taught me a lot. Ian Corkhill from Liverpool, had many, many years in the catering industry and his quirky wonderful menus that he created for the hotel always impressed me. I remember a dish from our Christmas Eve menu in 1997 (I was just 16) and working in his shadow, as his Kitchen Assistant, we were to serve Cullin Skink ‘Smoked haddock and Potato Soup’ on the Table d’hôte menu that evening. This traditional Scottish dish, derived from “Cullen” in the North East of Scotland is a beautiful hearty soup, and traditionally it is served all over Scotland in the Christmas Period! It’s really cheap, easy to make, low in fat and very filling.

Ingredients

Cullen Skink - “Smoked Haddock and Potato Soup” Method

Put all the ingredients into a good sized pan - EXCEPT THE HADDOCK. Fill with water so it just covers the top of the pan and bring it to the boil. Allow it to simmer for approximately 30 minutes or until all the potatoes have gone soft. While you wait, poach the haddock in a little bit of water in the microwave until cooked and then leave it to cool on the side. When your main stock is ready, remove the Bay leaves and blast it in a food processor or with a hand blender. Pour the water that you poached the Haddock with earlier into the stock, and then remove and discard the skin from the fish. Flake the fish and then mix it into the soup. Season with salt and pepper.

Slowly simmer it on the hob again finishing it off with some Skimmed milk or cream for the heavier option! Serve with freshly chopped herbs on top - Simply delicious! Suggestions - Variations: Try swapping the onions for Leeks to give it a stronger taste Use leftover mashed potato from yesterdays dinner it works just as well! Sometimes Cullen Skink is served with a softly poached hen’s egg on top for an even more filling soup! Have you made it? Created your own variation? Something you want to share? Let me know by email and I will add your comments next time....

HAPPY COOKING!

2 Large onions - peeled and finely chopped 1 1/2 kilos potatoes, peeled and chopped into cubes 3 cubes of Chicken or Vegetable stock - (I always use chicken as I consider it to have more flavour) 1/2 tsp dried parsley 1/2 tsp Thyme 2 bay leaves 1small piece of smoked haddock (Iceland do a bag of 5 for a very reasonable price!) a pinch of dried Garlic

SHARPLES IN SESSION By John Sharples

Zee Plane Zee Plane Royal Crown Jewels On Display?

If Prince Harry wants to play around naked with a load of female friends ... that is “FINE BY ME.” He is a young lad, enjoying his youth. However, he must surely realise by now that the world is looking. He must accept that he wasn’t born into the Pilkington family of 33 Inkerman Street just over from the gasworks. Although he is quite obviously “just another human being” he is third in line to the British Throne. Foolish he is! Wrong he is not! Given the chance, most young men would

have loved to have been in his situation. Just as well the Duke of Ed was ill at the time, he would have given him a clip around the ear, mind you, he hasn’t exactly been a “lonely old soul” over the years. At the end of the day, the lad is doing laddy things. However, he is now 27, not 20. I like this prince. I like him because he is a “very naughty boy”, but he will only be allowed to be a naughty boy for so long. If he isn’t careful, he will become a Cad! The featured picture is a photoshop picture that has been doing the rounds.

Somebody, somewhere, please explain to me why Tenerife or at least the Canary Islands don’t have their own designated water plane for combating fires. Ok, I know that the fires don’t happen all the time and I also know that they don’t happen every year, but I couldn’t help thinking as I watched helicopters dropping buckets of water on a small fire in Aguamansa in the north of the Island, that it all looks a bit like a story from Trumpton or Camberwick Green. Just think about it! The Canaries are home to two world heritage sites. The Teide National Park is the pride and joy of the Canaries. It consists mainly of

restored forested land. La Gomera houses the only forest in the whole of Europe to have survived the last ice age, the Garajonay Park. Surely those are two good enough reasons for someone to stick their neck out and do something about it. Also, isn’t it amazing that we had to ask Morocco to lend us their planes because the procedure was taking too long from mainland Spain? I love Tenerife. I particularly love the mountain areas. I am a regular visitor to the forests and mountains. I was only up there a couple of weeks ago to see the Perseid Meteor showers. Can we please have a designated water plane to protect these Spanish jewels?

I travelled up Mount Teide just over a week ago to take a look at the meteor showers that occur over our heads every August. We sat there in the cold night air as mini meteors shone though the air at terrific speed. The night sky up Mount Teide is something quite special, especially when the moon isn’t visible. The stars are just amazing. If you take a trip up there at night, you won’t be disappointed, but take a jumper. August 2012 has been an historic month for all things space. The death of Neil Armstrong was the death of a hero for me. Back in 1969, when they took those first steps on the moon, many people didn’t have televisions in their homes. For this reason, our primary school opened for a day in the summer holidays so that we

could all watch the piece of history unfold. I remember thinking that it was very exciting right up until we started to see the pictures that were beaming back from the moon surface. I remember saying to my mum that the school telly wasn’t as good as ours and that I couldn’t tell what was happening! The Beverly Hillbillies was much clearer. Also last month, in space exploration NASA’s new mars rover has landed safely on the surface and has begun to send back colour photographs. The first pictures looked like they were taken on Tenerife in the middle of a Calima. You can hardly see anything for dust on the lens. The next photos just looked like the crater at the top of Teide. I wonder if they will find signs of life. Maybe a TARDIS, or a lonely Vulcan. Time will tell.

Life On Mars

Fresco Fiasco

The biggest laugh recently for me was that lovely old lady who tried to restore a fresco in a church in Zaragossa. The poor old dear was obviously a fan of Planet of the apes. The picture of Christ was transformed into Roddy McDowell in full ape makeup. I would like to let her loose on the Mona lisa to see if she can turn her into Mr Bean! Could be the beginning of a whole new art form! Joking aside! Life is usually funnier than fiction. On Monday, restoration experts appeared at the church in Zaragossa to see if it was possible to restore the painting to its original state. Local residents were up in arms. They want the painting left as it is. Since the fresco fiasco happened, the village has had thousands of visitors who all wanted to see the revised painting. Local businesses have been busy and money has been pouring into the town.

False people and sneaky ones WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE DO YOU DISLIKE? Liars. And people who can’t think for themselves. IF I GIVE YOU ONE MILLION EUROS HOW WOULD YOU SPEND IT? Look after my family.. Start my own business. And buy a mansion for all the abandoned doggies here, also give lots to the Alzheimer’s Society as its close to my heart after losing my mum to this dreadful disease .xx WHAT´S THE MOST EMBARRASSING SITUATION YOU HAVE BEEN IN? Once went for a meal, I won’t say were.. I had chicken liver pate for starters...went to work.. Compering.. Was in the middle of a quiz.. And lets say I had a dreadful accident.. I think there’s still a stain now.. on the stage... No I won’t say where it is .. Lol goodbye!!! Xx

“Just fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave”

Once upon a time, “fantasy” was a niche genre, enjoyed by spotty teenagers; however, in recent years it has reached unimaginable heights of popularity, and has now become main stream, enjoyed by both sexes and all ages. Of course the fantasy genre is certainly nothing new; in literature it has been around forever, Tolkein (The Hobbit) and CS Lewis (The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe) are obvious examples and have existed in book form since their publication in 1937 and 1949 respectively. In the early eighties, largely thanks to the huge success of the “Dungeons and Dragons” role-playing games, fantasy was cool and films such as “Clash of the Titans”, “Conan the Barbarian” and “Legend” were very popular but by the nineties fantasy in the

cinema was dead. Fantasy’s resurrection in the 21st century is largely down to Peter Jackson, who in 2001 recreated on-screen the worlds that he had grown up reading about, the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, the movie adaptation of Tolkien’s classic books made fantasy cool AND critically acclaimed. Of course, equally as important and responsible for getting the world’s children reading is JK Rowling - Harry Potter books are the best-selling book series in history and were made into 8 box-

office breaking movies! After these giants, the floodgates opened, with “The Chronicles of Narnia”, a remake and sequel to “Clash of the Titans” both filmed here, in Tenerife. So, what’s happening fantasy-wise in the near future of entertainment? The next big one of the movies has to be the long awaited prequel to “Lord of the Rings”, “The Hobbit, an unexpected journey” is released in December 2012, with Peter Jackson in the director’s chair, with a further two films planned (their source material a rather thin

children’s book, notes made by Tolkien and some newly written material). On T.V the one everyone’s talking about is “Game of Thrones”, the HBO adaptation of George R.R Martin’s best-selling series of novels. I would describe it as “The Sopranos” with swords and dragons! A lot of adult content and very violent “Game of Thrones” is shown on the tv network “antena3.com” Finally for gamers, “Skyrim” is the 5th instalment of the epic “Elder Scrolls” series, but can be enjoyed as a standalone experience. Released in late 2011, it’s a huge game of almost infinite hours of gameplay - so I’m told as I’ve resisted buying so far because I have A. a wife, B. a job, C. a life! So I hope I’ve satisfied any cravings for elves, dwarves and wizards etc! See you next time PS. Last week’s movie quote was from Jack Nicholson as the Joker in Tim Burton’s “Batman”(1989)

From Perry to Geri

Russell Brand, comedian, lothario and former Mr Katy Perry, is dating Spice Girl Geri Halliwell!!

Russell, who is also a successful movie actor starring in hits such as the remake of Dudley Moore classic “Arthur”, “Get Him to the Greek” and West End musical adaptation “Rock Of Ages”, became close to former Ginger Spice after they met up at the Olympics closing ceremony in which they were both performing. It is said that their shared interest in yoga was a factor and that they have made a “spiritual connection”. They have been impressing each other with their general bendiness (I bet they have) and knowledge of yoga’s more daring moves!!! Brand has been linked to the Eastern meditation technique before and was dating his yoga instructor, Geri famously relaunched her solo career with a new mega-fit body thanks to her yoga regime and has since released 2 fitness DVDs. They have been photographed several times out on apparent dates and Russell even seems to be getting the approval from Geri’s six year old daughter, Bluebell. Russell Brand recently got divorced from U.S. Pop princess Katy Perry who he was married to for 14 months, although I’m sure she won’t be too broken-hearted with this news as she’s been linked to a string of celebrity hunks including notorious bad boy, rock singer John Mayer and is rumoured to be setting her sights on R-Patz himself, Robert Pattinson. Personally it’s seems like a step down from the gorgeous Katy Perry but what do I know! Good on you Russ, spice up your life!.

Will.I.Am performs song on Mars (sort of!)

Hit producer, Black Eyed Peas founder and “The Voice” star Will.I.Am (real name, William James Adams Jr.) will be heard by the inhabitants of the planet Mars on 28th august. The star has teamed up with scientists at NASA and will stream his latest song “Reach for the stars”, (no, it’s not an S Club 7 cover) through the speakers (why

does it have speakers? What aren’t they telling us?) of the new Mars Rover “Curiosity”, currently exploring the surface of the red planet. It’s a 780 million Dollar round trip back to the students at the Jet Propulsion laboratory in Pasadena, California, let’s all hope it’s one of his better tracks, otherwise Will.I.Am. may be the cause of the” War of the Worlds”!!

Tenerife Weekly Pool Superleague

This week’s action

Barracuda Hunters 4 v 6 Hoops Hoops got off to a good start and quickly established a two frame lead for John and Chris, but Steve produced a great finish to make it 2-1 in the third. The home side could have been level in the next frame but Helen, missing an easy black, handed the fourth frame to Bernie.....both doubles went to the home side to level at 3-3 and it was game on..... Hoops, who have been strong starters knew they were in a game and had to dig deep to win the next three frames with Carl potting the black to win the ninth and decisive game....Bernie lost his hundred per cent record in a closely fought last frame to leave match finished at 6-4 to Hoops. Trap Door 3 v 7 Target Bar A good start for the Trap Door, Jamie takes the first, but Dave, Grant and Roy of Target Bar took the next 3. The first doubles was a long fought battle, Dave and Marcus taking the Trap Door to one behind. Dave and Grant sneak Targets fourth, Micky takes a tough third frame for the home side, but it’s not enough as Rob Grant and Dave take the last three for Target, Bar 180 B 6 v 4 Nauta A At Bar 180,both teams were trying to make up for bitter defeats last week and went in all guns blazing. The first rubber went to Graeme after a hard fought match against Joules(a stand in for her injured husband) it went down to only a few last balls with Joules only having two pots to win, but with a last ball miss Graeme got the run of the balls for an easy finish. Thomas(twiggy), a new player for the season had a hard time against Ray C who soon took control. Steady potting from Thomas saw it come down to the black ball which somehow stayed out of the middle bag to give Ray the frame. It was also a hard fought game between James Feather and captain Jack of the Nauta Bar but As the saying goes, experience always wins. Ricky the newest signing for Bar 180 B got his home debut win over Ray C with some good potting and hopefully more wins to come. The doubles games were dominated by the home side with a good 5 ball finish from captain Graeme to secure the second for a 4 - 1 lead. The second set of singles followed and Ricky secured another win against the same opponent but this time it was a closer affair with a great under pressure finish from the new kid. Gary did everything right against Jack in his only singles game of the night only for the black to get stuck in the jaws after some fantastic potting to give Jack an easy finish. Thomas fell foul to Ray C’s ability once again and Ray cleared up with ease. it was squeaky bum time for Jamie as Joules played some impressive pool to land on the black but with a difficult angle she did pot it but unfortunately the white went in the corner pocket but

all in all a great night had by all! Vivo 8 v 2 Legendary Jokers Vivo again taking an early 3 frame lead before Captain Alex stepped up to try to steady the away ship. Luck was with the home side though, the Jokers giving away foul shots to give Vivo some finishes that perhaps could have gone to the visitors. They were 7-1 down when Pedro for Vivo was on to clear up from the break, missed his black and allowed Alex to step up and clear his 7 in one visit to take the final frame. That made him the only winner for his team on the night with 2 out of 2 single wins. Vivo stars Victor and Valeri also continued their winning streak both scoring twice each in their singles! Bad luck Jokers, maybe better luck next time.

Bar 180 Titans 7 v 3 Oasis Overall we deserved the win as we played the more solid pool, but it could have been closer if it wasn’t for John potting the black in his first game, before potting his reds first, then going in-off, while potting the black in his second game. Everyone played played in good humour and a good night was had by all. Mountain rangers A 3 v 7 Tasca A A warm welcome from our hosts greeted with lovely Canarian food and our toughest game to date. Bungalow struggled to keep his 100% record, captain Jon Boy gave another solid performance same as Alex and Grandad, the draw specialist is just holding is place in the side. Mountain Rangers A were expecting to get absolutely panned on Tuesday night - against top of the league Bar Tasca A. Almost every frame went down to

Blue Division Results - 28.8.12 Legends A 6 v 4 Barracuda Bandits Legends C 3 v 7 Treasure Island Legends were magnificently lead by their Captain Graham who showed the way from the front playing some brilliant Pool(was that how you told me to say it Graham, you now owe me a drink) On the Bandits side Ray was his usual self. For those of you who don’t know him, Ray is very old, he was born at a very early age in 1938,and he knew from the start he was going to be a Pool player because his Mum and Dad kept throwing him in the deep end. They also showed him how to get a Banana in his mouth sideways which came in very useful when Paul W luckily managed to 7 ball him, finishing perfectly on each Ball and again on the black(Scabby Git). All the rest of us thought it was brilliant. Things changed for Ray in his second game when he doubled his last ball to finish on the black. ”No luck in that “he said “I can do it 10 times out of 10,”(Yeah right). We had a great night and will have you next time. I didn´t see much of the game on the next table but they also seemed to be enjoying their game. Congratulations to the winners, and for the losers as they say “There’s always the River”

the last few balls, making a 3-7 loss something of a little victory for the mountain boys. The Tasca lads were great fun, with lots of laughing and joking throughout the night. Many thanks, guys! See you on the return leg. Emeralds 3 V 7 Diamonds A FRIENDLY GRUDGE MATCH. Both were in fine spirits for this Derby Game. The match was a very close cagey affair, with no-one willing to give much away. Brendan, always a steady player had a chance to clear the table but faltered, letting Martin take the point. This set the scene for nearly every frame, George, not at his usual standard lost the second frame. Martyn failed to get the first point on the board by going in off his last ball. Pete scored first for the home team after a lack lustre Stig failed to impress. The Diamonds took both doubles with nice clearances from Raj and Paul. Raj missed the chance to take an unassailable lead, later discovering he had played with the wrong cue. Stig finally found his form to take the 8th frame, and Martyn restored a bit of pride for the home team with a good black. Andy managed to win a black ball duel to give the visitors 7-3 victory. Sloop Bar 6 - 4 Red Pride Phil from the Sloop Bar had two firsts, one was the home win over Red Pride, the other being able to walk home ( or at least remember it) !

CD Tenerife Leave CD Marino To Count The Cost Of Derby Defeat second half, a second goal was needed to settle the game. Inigo Ros was the provider this time as he slipped the ball through to the onrushing Aridane who placed his shot perfectly past the keeper and in the net. Marino President Pepe Barrios tried to make his peace with the Tenerife fans following pre match resentment over the raised ticket price (20 euros) for this derby game but he has more urgent work to do to appease his new recruits picked up in the promotion charge.

New Striker Guillem Marti Joins From Austria

Just a few days after Aridane’s impressive brace CD Tenerife added another forward to their squad. Guillem Marti was born in Menorca but the 27 year old has spent the last few seasons with Ried in the Austrian league. Marti joins the squad for the home game against Rayo Vallecano B on Sunday (2nd Sept) kick off Noon in Santa Cruz.

Local pride was at stake in the new Tenerife derby clash as CD Marino of Playa de Las Americas hosted CD Tenerife of Santa Cruz on Sunday lunchtime but it was Gran Canaria born striker Aridane who stole the show with two goals for the capital city club. Tenerife were hungry to open the new Segunda B season with a win and it showed as Chechu attacked down the right from the kick off and laid on an inviting ball for Aridane to head into the Marino net with barely 20 seconds played. The majority of the lower than expected 2,500 crowd leapt up and celebrated, a

patchy pre season and doubts about a young squad were now forgotten as the new coach Cervera’s starting 11 warmed to their task. Luismi Loro put a shot wide and the home keeper dived in to clear danger as Tenerife tried to increase their lead. Marino found it difficult to break the grip of the visitors midfield and when they did Noah and Balduino couldn’t find the scoring touch that led Marino to a glorious cup and promotion winning season. New boys Ros and former Marino player Cristo Martin looked like wise additions in white shirts and the Tenerife defence looked steady and free of the rash challenges of previous seasons. Marino were still in the hunt and tested Sergio Aragoneses at the start of the

Ferrari test 2014 engine

Ferrari have revealed that they are running a 2014-specification engine on a test bed at their Maranello headquarters.

The Italian marque, together with fellow Formula 1 suppliers Mercedes-Benz and Renault, will swap their current 2.4-litre V8 engines for brand new 1.6-litre V6 turbos in what amounts to the first change in the engine regulations since 2006. The switch has been prompted by the FIA and will see cars more reliant on recoverable energy than is currently the case. As such, exhaust heat will join KERS as a power source - it is anticipated that the contribution of recoverable energy will increase by a factor of 10 - with a greater emphasis placed on fuel efficiency.

Speaking to Sky Sports during a video interview, engine and electronics director Luca Marmorini said: “This is a very challenging period for our powertrain people. “We are working on the 2012 powertrain and the rest of the season is very important. No-one has also mentioned that we need to work on the 2013 engine, which is a lot of work with a new installation.

ASTRO-BARILINA’S TWISTED HOROSCOPES

Aquarius 20 January - 18 February Robots tend to have more luck than you at finding love. This week will see no alteration of that sad fact, however, it is possible that a robot may fall in love with you. Pisces 19 February - 20 March Chin up, best foot forward, Love may come your way this week... and if it doesn’t then you can at least console yourself with the fact that you haven’t made a complete fool out of yourself. No, sorry, that happens next week. Enjoy! Aries 21 March - 19 April Gambling is something that may get the better of you shortly. Remember, gambling doesn’t always mean forfeiting money but can also take the form of running an amber light, crossing the road when it appears to be safe, and not having medical insurance. Taurus 20 April - 20 May Stimulation of the mind and body is achievable this week without a meditation workout. If you tend to get aroused when watching documentaries, you will find happiness upon your sofa. Lucky colour for this week is white.

Gemini 21 May - 21 June Many of your hang-ups would disappear if you started wearing clothes that more suited you. Your itchy nose will soon be gone after you suffer a week of agonising hell locked in a pepper cupboard with a strait-jacket. Damage caused by rage might cost you around 4,000 Euros this weekend. Avoid posh bars. Cancer 22 June - 22 July Spitting is a filthy habit and may put someone off you. Instead of spitting you should attempt to siphon it out of your nose which is still a filthy habit, and will definitely put someone off you, but at least you have an interesting story to tell for once. Leo 23 July - 22 August Did you happen to see a film called “Creepy Creatures of The Night”? It wasn’t a good film. This week is your own personal “Creepy Creatures of The Night”. Spreading lies about colleagues or friends may see dwindling relationships with those around you. Virgo 23 August - 22 September This week will go well, except for the bits that don’t. And not only will those bits go badly, but they’ll go BADLY. Your mind is filled with thoughts of sexual inadequacy - if you don’t know what this means then Google it!

Libra 23 September - 23 October Temptation is everywhere, especially if you’re willing to look everywhere for it. However, you will discover that temptation itself is not as harmful as running the streets naked shouting “It’s not my fault, I’m looking for temptation!” Scorpio 24 October - 21 November Music is likely to help you through the week, so try to listen to as much as possible. The best way to fool a man into giving away a biscuit is to let him know that you know where it’s been. Don’t give any details, just let it casually be known that you “know where it’s been”. How is this relevant to you? You’ll see. Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December Express yourself in a non-flamboyant and unexciting way. Buy a nice brooch, a pastry cutter or maybe even a new loo brush - it will give you something to look forward to. This year may seem to have started as you intended, but what’s happened since, eh? Nothing. Capricorn 22 December - 19 January The sun doesn’t wear a hat, and it’s probably not a good idea to play with it. A trip to the doctor’s should quell any anxiety you have about being a pair of curtains, although his diagnosis may be less than helpful.
