British family in fatal shooting in France
A
British husband and wife murdered in a shooting in the French Alps have been named by neighbours as Saad and Iqbal al Hilli. Their two children, who survived the attack, were named as eight-year-old Zehab and four-year-old Zaina. The family all lived in Claygate, Surrey.
Officers revealed that three of the victims received bullet shots to the centre of the forehead during the shooting near
the village of Chevaline, near Lake Annecy, in the Haute-Savoie region. The father was found dead in his bulletriddled BMW in eastern France, along with his wife and another woman, believed to be one of their parents. Eight-year-old Zehab girl was found near the car with gunshot wounds and a fractured skull and is in a critical condition in hospital in the city of Grenoble. Her four-year-old Zaina was found alive hiding under the legs of her mother - eight hours after the massacre. It happened in a car park in a forested area near the village of Chevaline, near Lake Annecy, a popular tourist destination in the Haute-Savoie region.
The gunman who shot dead four people in a remote car park in the French Alps may have been a professional killer, police have said. Officers revealed that three of the victims received bullet shots to the centre of the forehead during the shooting near the village of Chevaline, near Lake Annecy, in the Haute-Savoie region. Public prosecutor Eric Maillaud said the three victims in the BMW - a man and two women - appeared to be a family of British holidaymakers. “As soon as the first forensics began we were able to open the vehicle, and it was at that moment we discovered the little girl that nobody had seen, because she
hadn’t moved, completely in shock and completely frozen,” he said. “She was not immediately found because the first police officers on the scene were told not to enter the car, or to move the bodies, pending the arrival of forensic experts. The instructions were issued for fear that the bullet-pierced windows of the car would shatter, potentially compromising the work of the team.” “She (Zaina) was so close to her mother they appeared as one mass,” LieutenantColonel Benoit Vinnemann explained. The family were staying in a caravan in a campsite popular with UK tourists called Saint Jorioz and it is believed neighbours at the campsite alerted police when they

The killings took place in a car park in a forested area near the village of Chevaline, near Lake Annecy, a popular tourist destination in the HauteSavoie region, in eastern France. Zehab was found near the BMW with gunshot wounds and is in a critical condition in hospital in the city of Grenoble. She had been shot at least three times, according to reports quoting police sources. Just yards away, the body of a male cyclist also shot dead was discovered. It is thought he inadvertently cycled into the scene of the attack. The four bodies and the BMW were riddled with bullets, the reports added. A passer-by discovered the dead cyclist and

the older girl and alerted authorities at around 4pm (French were found near the BMW - registered to a UK national. Earlier, prosecutor Mr Maillaud said: “There is a crime scene with several dead, and we fortunately see more scenes like this in films than in real life.” He said postmortems are due to be carried out shortly. A motive for the attack is unclear. One theory is they may have been the victims of an armed robbery. A number of bullet casings were recovered at the scene, described by police as characteristic of an ‘assassination’. Officials say the fouryear-old girl is uninjured, but perhaps may provide police with some vital clues to this baffling murder.”

Explosion of life in Loro Parque
AFTER celebrating the arrival of a baby whale two weeks ago, Loro Parque is again announcing new arrivals. This time it’s the birth of 5 baby Stingrays (Dasyatis Americana), in the Aquarium.
This is a huge milestone for the species as well as for Loro Parque as they will only breed if they are happy in their environment. The Stingrays, part of the shark family, are housed in an Aquarium, with over 1,200,000 litres of sea water, which is collected directly from the Atlantic Ocean. Including the five new babies, Loro Parque now has a group of 16 Stingrays, 7 of them males and 9 females that live together in an exhibition devoted to the Caribbean ecosystem site from where they originate, they share their home with tropical and subtropical animals together with Sea Horses (Selene vomer), Anisotremos (Anisotremus virginicus), Spanish Wrasse (Bodianus rufus) and Sergeant Majors (Abudefduf saxatilis). Stingrays have a flat diamond-shaped body and usually stay for several hours buried in the sandy bottoms of the

ocean, and also stand out by having a poison dart in the tab on its tail to defend against predators, although “if they are treated well and are fed by hand, something that they especially like they can build a up a very good relationship with caregivers and are extremely docile”, says the curator of the Aquarium Juan Dominguez. “Their favourite foods mussels, clams, and also blue fish, squid and prawns, a varied and rich menu that ensures healthy and gradual growth of the small pups”, he pointed out. In Europe there are about 60 Stingrays in zoos, of which only 3 of them have managed to reproduce in captivity.

La Gomera is safe LOCAL NEWS
L
A GOMERA has sought to reassure UK agents and operators that 85% of the island’s ecological areas remain undamaged by the recent forest fires and are open for tourists. The Canary Island’s government stressed that the island remains a safe tourism destination with a large part of its ecological beauty still intact. “Although damage to the ecological area is significant, at approximately 15%, some 85% remains unaltered for use by tourists who wish to enjoy the natural wonders of the island, particularly Garajonay National Park, a World Heritage site,” the government said.
“Similarly, most walkways are open to the public. Those that are closed are cordoned off as a precaution, as the clean-up and maintenance work is nearing an end so
the walkways can be reopened in suitable conditions for users.” The La Gomera Island Council tourism department has set up a channel of communication through the website www.lagomera.travel with up-to-date information specifically aimed at tour operators and visitors. A section of frequently asked questions about the forest fires on the island has been included, with answers in Spanish, English and German. The island’s government said: “We would therefore like to stress that visitors can continue to enjoy the beauty and charm of the large areas of laurel forest that characterise the interior of the island, including the recreation areas and cycle tracks, as well as the coastal areas, beaches and other activities the Biosphere Reserve of La Gomera has to offer. “As far as tourism is concerned, the situation is perfectly normal for anyone who is considering the island for their holidays, or already has a booking, so they can enjoy themselves and relax in optimum conditions.”

Located near the church square, this will be a great opportunity to while away a Sunday afternoon.
SUNBED wars reached an alltime high this week with a Spanish holiday maker being fined 120 Euros for battering a British tourist over an argument about use of a sunbed. The incident happened at Sur y Sol in Los Cristianos when the Spanish woman, who was staying at the Atlantida resort and wanted to use a sunbed. The neighbouring resorts have an agreement
that guests staying at Atlantida have use of Sur y Sol’s pool, but not the sunbeds. After being warned by the president of Sur y Sol twice not to use the beds, the woman took one and, after being told again it was not allowed attacked the British woman by hitting her several times. Although not badly injured woman was, understandably, upset by the incident. Police were called to the popular resort and the Spaniard was arrested. She subsequently appeared in court the next morning and was fined for assault.

WENTY seven boats registered as taking part in the 17th annual International Canaries to Maderia Regatta. They departed from Santa Cruz at 3pm and eventually 26 made it to the sea in the event organised in conjunction with the Real Club Nautico de Tenerife (MTCR) AND THE Clube Naval Do Funchal.
Canaries to Madeira Regatta
The regatta started with the boats navigating their way by Teresitas Beach where the committee had placed the starter buoys. The signal to start was raised at 3pm. First past the starter buoy was the Puerto Calero team, followed by the Marina Rubicon and Adrian hotels vessels, the latter with Olympic Tenerifian Javier Hernandez doing tactical work. The boats sailed northwards, and left the island of Tenerife by Los Roques de Anaga. There was so little wind, registered below the five knots, that the gliders moved very slowly. In fact, most of the boats opted to venture into the sea and not skirt the island, looking for some wind to help them. This Canarias-Madeira Regatta has the support of the Spanish Federation, the Canarian Association of nautical clubs, the Association of Regional sailing of Madeira, the Portuguese Navy and the Spanish Navy. Entrants must travel 262 nautical miles to the port of Funchal, on Madeira, and have to pass by Natural Reserve on the Savage Islands, midway between the Canary Islands and Madeira. This race is a biannual and alternates the point of departure between Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.
Missing Children’s Bones? CANARY Island police have requested that bones found in a well in Gran Canaria be re-examined in a bid to discover whether they belong to missing children Yeremi Vargas, missing since 2007 or Sara Morales, missing since 2006.
There has been no trace of either child since they disappeared despite numerous appeals for information. Bones were discovered in Jinamar, Gran Canaria in March 2010 and, at the time, it was recorded that they were the remains of birds. However a recent discovery of bones on a bonfire has led to another police investigation and it is thought that in light of this latest find
and mistakes uncovered in previous investigations it would be wise to re-examine the bones from Gran Canaria. It is thought that the government
will agree to this latest request. Back in March of this year new data on a car and children’s clothing reactivated the search for the seven year old boy,
Yeremi Vargas, who went missing from close to his house in Vecindario on Gran Canaria five years ago. Guardia Civil sources at the time confirmed
that this new data contributes to keeping the case alive. They confirmed the investigation was being reactivated after information regarding three cars, a white Opel Corsa B type, another C type Corsa and a black Renault Clio, were seen in the area at the time of Yeremi’s disappearance. The Opel was said to be driven by a man wearing a cap and witnesses later said there were two people inside, and not just the driver as previously thought. Yeremi’s parents have always believed their son was kidnapped, have said that after all the searching of the local area was carried out without finding anything, their hypothesis has got stronger. ‘Someone took him and he is still alive’, they say. The family of Sara Morales would not comment on this latest news.

Tenerife beats Gran Canaria for safety TENERIFE has been named as being a safer resort for cruise line passengers than its neighbour Las Palmas in Gran Canaria.
In a recent consumer survey, passengers of cruise ships stated that they felt far safer and able to walk about and enjoy their visit here in Tenerife than In Las Palmas. Over 5,000 people were interviewed across all major Spanish cities by the Organisation of Consumers. Passengers who enjoyed a stop-off during Canary Island cruises said they felt they were less likely to be mugged or assaulted in Tenerife and praised the fact that local police were more obvious here than in Gran Canaria. Santa Cruz police have been stepped up their fight against crime and have attended more incidents of vandalism and fighting this year than in 2011 and the results are obvious. In a ranking for city safety recently, Santa Cruz came 14th out of 30 whilst Gran Canaria only managed 22nd. Generally speaking, according to the survey, the main concerns of cruise ship tourists is their safety at night when walking through cities (49% said they felt insecure) much more than walking around the outskirts (41%).

Fasnia Dog Refuge By Sharon Edens
RECENTLY I was invited to visit the Refugio Fasnia where the dogs from Live Arico are now housed. I was shown around site and given a tour of where the building works are in progress. I was shown where the dogs now live during the day and at night, and where dogs that have had surgery are housed. I was introduced to some fabulous doggies; it was so hard to walk away without a car full! I was also shown the dogs which have been separated as they were not socializing with other dogs, these dogs are great with humans, they just need to find homes with no other animals.
At the moment the refuge is not built to house the 400 dogs they have but all the staff are doing what they can to make the situation as comfortable for them as possible. They have shade, they have water and they have food but not enough of any. The surgery and recovery rooms have been tiled and are waiting for equipment, flooring and recovery cages. The Store room has yet to be tiled and floored and shelving put up. The office is just a bare shell but in the most appropriate place as it is next to the surgery so can be used by the vet when necessary. One ‘warehouse’ is being split into 40 separate rooms, (20 in phase one, 20 in phase two) 20 rooms on each side with a walkway down the centre, this is so that the dogs can be housed in smaller groups, of perhaps 8, they will have shelter from the heat and wind. There will also be an outside area for their necessaries and so they can sun-bathe if they wish.
dogs which are being kept separate from the others as they are being bullied by the stronger dogs - a good move as I am sure these will be the first to be re-homed! I saw no evidence that made me feel the dogs were in terrible conditions, and I did look for it! The past is the past, the dogs were moved, maybe too soon, but we can’t go back. We need to work with Fasnia to make a better life for the dogs and ultimately to find forever homes for each and every one of them that is suitable. So, can we stop arguing, and name calling? Can we all pull together to help the team at Fasnia to make sure the dogs have the best; it is not their fault they were unwanted by their humans. The adoptions process will be reformatted so that information is given in both English and Spanish along with a picture, if you are interested in giving a dog a home or
Each house will have its own water and food supply. The dogs will not be able to see the dogs in the next house, reducing the stress factor and once these are all built it will mean that there is sufficient space near to the caves - which are currently left open for them at night - to have a designated exercise area. The second warehouse will be sectioned off in the same way in phase 3 of the project. This will also mean that if any dog becomes unsocial or is weak there will be facilities to keep them separated whilst a foster or forever home is found. Yes - there is lots to do. Yes - it is going to cost a great deal of money, but funding has been secured. Yes - it is going to take time, but 20 rooms should be completed within a couple of weeks so we are talking a couple of months for completion. Yes - site should never have been used until it was ready - but it has so let’s move on. Yes - there have been fights - whilst I was there I witnessed a couple of scuffles but nothing major - but with that many dogs there are bound to be one or two incidents a day at least. Yes - there is a problem with skin conditions, these dogs live outside, and parasites live outside. Yes - there are thin dogs, but these dogs are being fed well from what I could see, there was plenty of food available. There is one dog who is going to be a challenge to re-home, he is a Chow Chow, and he is aggressive towards both humans and dogs at the moment, however he has had an operation to remove some skin issues he has so let’s hope that puts him in a better frame of mind! There is another dog which has been abandoned at the refuge that is wild and will not tolerate any intervention at the moment, so unfortunately he has to live separately. There are a few old and timid
are interested in individual sponsorships continue for those people who are unable to offer a home to a dog, contact Solange or Heidi. If anyone wants to visit the refuge you will be made welcome, but you must make an appointment as the workers at the refuge have been told not to let anyone on site without permission, this is for the safety of the workers/visitors and also the dogs. Things the refuge needs us to help to supply; food, detergent, bleach, bin bags, large water containers - such as large plastic buckets and very fine green netting, used for shading areas They also need volunteers - if anyone is able to give up a little time on a weekly basis then please contact Heidi. As I say let’s all pull together for all the animal welfare organisations on the island, none of them would need to be in existence if it was not for heartless humans. Resident’s Cocaine Haul Discounts LOCAL NEWS
THE Ministry of Development has promised that the new document system needed for Canary residents to obtain a 50% travel discount will soon become automated. No date has yet been given, although it is said to be “a matter of months” away and may even be operational by the end of this year. The new system, which came into effect on September 1st and requires all Canary residents who want to get 50% off interisland air and sea travel to present their specially-obtained registration document. This has been introduced to cut back on fraudulent use of the discounts but is expected to continue to cause problems in the teething stages. Some airlines have predicted that travellers would turn up without the certificate so have put an alternative into force, allowing them to rebook flights up to two days later during September depending on space availability.
Thousands of people were affected by the new rules last weekend and there were scenes of some chaos at a number of check-in desks and queues. This hastened the Ministry’s pledge for an automated system “soon”. Many of the airlines pre-empted the difficulties and sent reminders to all travellers, including Binter which sent out more than 200,000 emails. Research has shown that around six per cent of the people who obtained discount travel last year were not entitled to do so which represents 150,000 passengers from 2.5 million.
SPANISH police working with the Canary Islands government simultaneously intercepted two sailboats transporting more than 500 kilograms of cocaine in a raid on the Atlantic Ocean close to the Canary Islands. Two teams of police Special Operations Group personnel boarded the boats, one of which was evidently the “mother ship,” where the drugs were found. The other boat, a support vessel, was going to ferry the cocaine to the Spanish coast. The Government Delegation in the Canaries, said that both boats were boarded simultaneously and with the assault police managed to break up the infrastructure of a Bulgarian drug trafficking operation. The British Serious
Organised Crime Agency also collaborated with Spanish police in the operation. Four Bulgarians, including one woman were arrested. Two of them are wellknown to the Bulgarian authorities. The woman is reported to be very young, whilst the men arrested are already known to the Spanish authorities for some time as being involved with a group specialising in drug trafficking.

British Man and Son Drown In Majorca NATIONAL NEWS
A BRITISH man and his seven-year-old son have drowned off the coast of Majorca.
The father died as he tried to rescue his son swept out to sea by a huge wave at a small deserted cove called Cala Antena, near the resort of Calas de Mallorca, in the south-east of the Spanish island. The tragedy was witnessed by the boy’s horrified mother and two sisters from the shore. The mother ran screaming for help, and lifeguards from a nearby hotel tried to rescue the two holidaymakers but could do nothing to save them. The pair were named locally as George, 28, and Louis, seven. Witnesses said they saw the father shouting for help from the sea, waving his arms in the air. According to one local report, he had been taking photos of his son by the rocks shortly before the tragedy, which happened at around 11am on Saturday. It was raining lightly and a red flag was flying on the beach warning bathers not to enter the water.
Lara Lewis
Police and an ambulance arrived in Cala Antena, but it was too late to save the pair. A police source on the island said: “It is a terrible tragedy. It appears the young boy was swept from the rocks by a large wave, and the dad naturally dived in to try to save him. The sea was ferocious with very strong waves crashing onto the rocks,
and when it’s like that those stairs are extremely dangerous. The staircase really should be closed off when the weather is like that.” Humphrey Carter, of the Majorca Daily Bulletin, said the deaths had shocked residents on the island. A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We are aware of the tragic deaths of two British nationals in
Majorca on September 1. We are providing consular assistance to the family”. The tragedy comes a fortnight after a Briton died as he tried to rescue his young granddaughter who was washed out to sea by a freak wave in Portugal. Lara Lewis, five, was swept away as she played with shells on a beach near Nazare, 80 miles north of Lisbon. Brian O’Dwyer, 66, drowned after diving in to try to save her. Grandmother Jill O’Dwyer also got into difficulties after leaping into the sea to try
to help, but she survived. They had taken Lara for a walk along the sandy beach leaving parents Philip and Sian Lewis sunbathing around 400 yards away. Mr and Mrs Lewis, from Hackney, east London, were devastated as they watched as lifeguards spent an hour trying to revive Lara, but she died on the beach. Just a day later, Cambridge University student Marcus Hughes-Hallett drowned while swimming off the Maltese island of Comino.

Spain’s Wildfires Are Under Control NATIONAL NEWS
THE wildfires that forced thousands of people to flee their homes on Spain’s Costa del Sol have now been brought under control. At least one person died, two sustained burns, and more than 4,000 others, including hundreds of ex pats, were evacuated as the fire thought to have been started by arsonists was whipped up by strong winds. Over 450 fire fighters spent the early hours battling flames threatening houses in the wealthy resort of Marbella, but the blazes are now contained.
“You can still see pretty dense smoke above the mountains here, and there is an acrid taste of smoke in the air,” said one onlooker. “So it’s clear that the fires are not out, but they are contained. They say this is now a level 2 emergency so it’s down a little from where it was last night.
Thousands of people were evacuated along the Costa del Sol Hundreds of Britons are among those forced out of their homes, including 300 who have been relocated to evacuation centres in the La Cala de Mijas and Calahonda areas,
a Foreign Office spokesman confirmed. The charred body of an elderly man was found near a house where he had apparently returned after being evacuated, according to the Andalusia government. Local police found the
body while searching through the burnt embers, a statement said. A further two 58-year-old people were in a critical condition with burns covering more than 60% of their bodies, it added. Authorities have stated that the fire started outside the mountainside town of Coin, northeast of Marbella, and arson was suspected. A dry winter followed by a scorching hot summer has left much of southern Spain tinder dry and vulnerable to fires. Around 580 square miles of land in Spain has burned in nearly 12,000 wildfires so far this year. Other European nations, including Greece, Portugal and Bosnia, and of course, Tenerife have faced similar blazes.
Trio Jailed For Majorca ‘Ponzi’ Scheme
THREE Britons are jailed for a total of 18 years for stealing millions from ex-pat neighbours in a “Ponzi” scheme in Majorca. A couple who cheated friends and neighbours have been jailed for their part in a £10m “Ponzi” fraud scheme. John Hirst, 61, his wife Linda, 62, and financial adviser Richard Pollett, 70, were sentenced to a total of 18 years in prison for targeting ex-pats in Majorca. Their company, Gilher Inc, offered investors high rates of interest in return for capital investment. In reality the money was being siphoned off to fund the Hirsts’ millionaire lifestyle. While living in Majorca as part of the community they were conning, the couple spent hundreds of thousands of pounds redecorating their £1.5m luxury villa. They also splashed out on first class foreign travel, jewellery and a lavish wedding in Las Vegas. Some 120 investors were conned, many of them pensioners, Bradford Crown
Court heard. Many lost their life savings and retirement nesteggs. Passing sentence, Judge Jonathan Durham Ball QC said it was an “appalling and shocking case”. He added: “So many were targeted and so many have in effect had the remainder of their lives shattered and ruined.” Jailing Hirst and Pollett, he told them their victims were “decent, trusting people who gave you their life savings. “You are through and through common criminals. What you did was brutal, callous and cruel,” he added. He said many of those targeted were “elderly, single, retired, and vulnerable”. Referring to the couple’s wedding, he said he was “sickened to see the display of extravagance when so many of the investors you were defrauding were being entertained on a grand scale with the use of their own dishonestly obtained money”. John Hirst was sentenced to nine years in prison for conspiracy to defraud and money laundering. Pollett was sentenced to six and a half
years for fraud, and Linda Hirst was jailed for two and a half years for money laundering. John Hirst had claimed to be an expert and lied about having worked in banking and insurance. He told his victims he offered minimum returns
of 18% per annum if no money was withdrawn and said the money would be invested in the US stock exchange. He provided them with false literature including regular statements. The unsuspecting investors did not know that John Hirst had
moved to Majorca after serving time in prison in the 1990s for conning ex-miners out of their redundancy funds. The Serious Fraud Office began an investigation into Gilher Inc in 2009 following complaints from investors. They found the trio had been running a so-called “Ponzi” scheme. Less than half of the £10m paid in by investors between 2001 and 2009 was paid back. Charles and Melinda Dewey, from Somerset, spoke of how they moved with their two children to Majorca and ended up living in the same development as the Hirsts. They lost their life savings in the scam, and are now living in rented accommodation in the UK. Speaking outside court, Mr Dewey said: “We’re the ones with the life sentence - as victims. They were our neighbours,” Mrs Dewey added. “We all felt that they were friends and we knew them and they knew us and our families. It never occurred to us that they could behave as they did.”

Entertainer Max Bygraves Dies
BRITISH comedian and variety performer Max Bygraves has died aged 89. The entertainer - who’s catchphrase “I wanna tell you a story” propelled him to stardom in the 50s - had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. He died peacefully in his sleep at his daughter Christine Green’s home in Queensland, Australia, where he had been living since emigrating from Sandbanks, Dorset, in 2008. He had moved to Australia with Blossom, his wife of 70 years, in the hope the warm climate would help her long-term chest condition. She passed away in May last year. “Sadly Max soon suffered early signs of dementia and by the time Blossom died he was barely able to understand what was happening,” a friend of the family said. His son Anthony, who once had his own TV show and as a young entertainer used to perform alongside his father, spoke of his distress at watching the star gradually decline. “Dad died last night as a result of the Alzheimer’s,” he added. “He was six weeks off celebrating his 90th birthday. He had become terribly frail, but I hoped that he would be able to see his 90th birthday. It wasn’t to be. He just slipped away. Although his death isn’t unexpected it has still come as a terrific shock. We’re all terribly sad. “It’s hard to imagine a world without him but at least I saw him recently. I got
Born Walter Bygraves in London’s docklands, he changed his name after impressing fellow servicemen with his impersonations of Max Miller. He married Blossom Murray in 1942, shortly before his career took off alongside popular fellow entertainers including Frankie Howard. With his catchphrase ‘I wanna tell you a story’, he was soon appearing at his first Royal Command Performance and was later second on the bill to Judy Garland at the London Palladium. He was awarded the OBE in 1982 before going on to present the game show Family Fortunes. In 1987 the world of show business was shocked to learn that Bygraves had fathered a love child in the 1960s. He admitted he was the father of Stephen Rose, born after a brief affair with actress Pat Marlowe in 1961. Soon after that, it emerged he had fathered another love child during an affair with landlady Margaret Garriock, four years after his marriage. He had never spoken about the existence of John Rice, now 65, until the revelations in 2002. Despite his infidelity, Blossom stood by her husband and on the first page of his autobiography, Stars In My Eyes, Bygraves dedicates his account of a ‘life in show business’ to her. The couple had three children – Christine, 68, Maxine, 59, and Anthony, 64.

next but when I saw him in Australia last month, he’d lost all that. It was very upsetting because Dad was always so on the ball - always on his toes.” Anthony has organised a campaign for the public to send him stories on how they affectionately remembered his father. The appeal came after more than 2,000 people sent get-well messages to Bygraves in March when it was revealed he was suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer’s. “I had wanted to compile it with the help of the public. Dad still had a loyal fan base all around the world,” he said. I had wanted people to contribute a written memory of Max to appear in ‘I wanna tell you a story’. Their own personal recollection of my father, a meeting, a show, a time, a place - anything that was interesting or unusual.” Bygrave’s agent Johnny Mans said: “His death is a great loss to the entertainment profession and a great loss to all of his friends in the industry.” Former radio presenter Ed Stewart said his friend was a “unique talent” who “gave a lot of pleasure to a lot of people. He as a person never dated, He was a great character with a great sense of humour, a lovely family and it’s just a shame that he’s gone, but at nearly 90, he had a good run.” Max Bygraves last appeared in public in the UK at revival shows in Blackpool and London in 2006.

A Dozen Whales Stranded on Scottish East Coast
MORE than a dozen whales have died after becoming stranded on the east coast of Scotland. A pod of 26 pilot whales was discovered at the base of steep cliffs in Pittenweem, near St Andrews, at about 7am on Sunday. At high tide, ten of the whales were floated out to sea; however 16 of the whales, including four calves, have died. Nine of the whales are being kept alive by vets “We are hopeful all the ten will survive - but I would say the chances are 50-50. It is up to the animals now. People here certainly couldn’t have done more - they were magnificent.” It is believed the 20-feet
long animals became stranded after following a sick animal onto shore. Ali Jack, the Scottish co-ordinator of the British Divers Marine Life Rescue, said the surviving whales may die from stress or become stranded again. Another pod of 17 whales has died after beaching themselves on Florida’s Atlantic coast. A total of 22 short-finned pilot whales came ashore at Avalon Beach State Park on Saturday morning. Conservation officials and concerned members of the public managed to save five calves and juvenile whales. Despite a day-long rescue effort the rest died of natural causes or were euthanised. The creatures, which are the biggest in the dolphin family
after killer whales, came ashore near Fort Pierce, on Florida’s south-central Atlantic coast.
The US National Park Service, Florida Fish and Wildlife and the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) participated in the rescue effort.
World’s deadliest snake A curved found at Tilbury Dock glass gets
THE snake was captured in Essex after it was transported to the UK on a container ship from India. Workers discovered the 18in (45cm) Saw-Scaled Viper, which had survived a 5,000 mile journey, after the vessel was unloaded at Tilbury dock. The viper is thought to kill more humans than all other snake species combined; this is because it is extremely aggressive and lives in highly-populated areas. Reptile expert Steve Mitchell was called to the dock to identify and capture the snake, which has been taken to the South Essex Wildlife Hospital in Grays, Essex. Sue Schwar, founder of the hospital, said: “We got a call from the shipping company. They got a shock when they opened the container - as soon as they saw the snake they just shut it back in and called us. Our reptile guy went down to scope it out. Thankfully, he recognised what it was straight away and knew how to deal with it. “He has various bits of specialist equipment and used a snake hook and box to capture it. The key is to grab the snake before it has a chance to realise what’s happening, if you hesitate it will be off like a shot or will have bitten
you more drunk
The Saw-Scaled Viper is found primarily in India, China, South East Asia and the Middle East and while it is not the most venomous snake in the world it is believed to be the deadliest because it attacks so often. Victims typically suffer pain, swelling and blistering at the site of the bite, bleeding from the gums, vomiting and a drop in blood pressure and heart rate. Death from septicaemia or respiratory or heart failure may occur between one and 14 days after the attack. The viper is the smallest of India’s “Big Four” deadliest snakes, which also include the Indian cobra, common krait and Russell’s viper. you, and if it bites you, you’re dead.” The hospital is now hoping to find a home for the snake in Britain with a holder of a dangerous wild animals licence. But it may have to be put down as the viper does not generally
respond well to living in captivity. Ms Schwar said: “It’s in our hospital for now but we hope to have it with us for the shortest time possible. But it has to go with someone who has the right experience and licence to keep it.”
THIS week’s most Ridiculous Research Award goes to Bristol University’s School of Experimental Psychology They are saying that “research” proves that how drunk you get depends on the shape of your glass! It is probably the last thing you think about down the pub, but drinking beer from a curvy glass gets you drunk quicker than a straight one. Researchers at the University have found that beer is consumed more quickly when drunk from a curved glass as it is more difficult to judge the amount still in the glass. In tests 160 drinkers took twice as long to down booze served in a straight glass, with it being harder to judge the
halfway point in a beer flute, according to researcher Dr Angela Attwood. ‘This could control drunkenness that is becoming more common,’ she added. The study shows how in recent years alcoholic drink producers have invested in unusually branded glasses to differentiate their products. These include chalice glasses, curved beer flutes and tankards. Dr Attwood added: ‘People often talk of pacing themselves when drinking alcohol as a means of controlling levels of drunkenness, and I think the important point to take from our research is that the ability to pace effectively may be compromised when drinking from certain types of glasses.’

Prince Andrew Scales Skyscraper For Charity
PRINCE Andrew, The Duke of York, has abseiled from the top of Europe’s tallest building, saying the most difficult part was climbing the stairs. His daredevil descent of the Shard skyscraper in London began on the 87th floor just below the top of the 1,016ft tower and finished an hour later on level 20. After completing the 785ft feat, the 52-year-old royal said: “I’m not even going to say that was a piece of cake or not. I will never do it again. I have to say the most difficult bit was walking up the stairs.” Andrew, who overcame his fear of heights for the abseil, described how he prepared for the challenge. “You have a moment to realise what you are doing and where you are going to go. The difficult bit was actually stepping out over the edge so the training I had done over the summer with the Royal Marines in Arbroath gave me the confidence to step out over the edge without too much trepidation.” Andrew was part of a group of around
40 people who lowered themselves down the building for the educational charity The Outward Bound Trust and the Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund. They hope to raise £1m. Outward Bound will use the money for outdoor activities and to help children who live in inner cities. Donors have given more than £290,000 to sponsor Andrew, who is the Outward Bound Trust’s chairman of trustees. As a former Royal Navy helicopter pilot who served in the Falklands War, he said the Marines were close to his heart. Andrew said he came up with the idea as a fundraising opportunity last year when the skyscraper was being built. Asked what the Queen thought about his descent, the Duke of York said: “When I spoke to
her last at Balmoral she was interested in why we were doing it and when I spoke to her about all the safety and the activities that were going on around it, about the teamwork... she understood what all the risks were and like the incredible monarch she is, she was entirely happy.” After Andrew completed the first descent of the day, he was followed by Foreign Secretary William Hague’s wife Ffion, who is Outward Bound’s deputy chairman. Mrs Hague described abseiling from such a height as “scary, exhilarating and truly terrifying” and said her husband thought she was mad when she first mentioned the idea. She said: “I am very glad it is over and I wouldn’t necessarily want to do it again but, my goodness, I am glad I have done it. I was trying very hard to focus on remembering the view because very few people in London will have seen London from that angle, from this fantastic building.” As one of the longest abseils ever undertaken by civilians, the descent has support from the Royal Marines who specialise in operating in extreme environments.

Bruce Willis Takes on Apple
BRUCE Willis is usually seen escaping from explosions and battling terrorists to save the world. His latest battle, however, takes him
to the considerably quieter world of the courtroom – although he still faces a formidable opponent. The Hollywood action hero is
considering legal action against technology giant Apple over his desire to leave his digital music collection to his daughters.
If he succeeds, he could benefit not just himself and his family but the millions who have purchased songs from Apple’s iTunes Store. Willis has discovered that, like anyone who has bought music online, he does not actually own the tracks but is instead ‘borrowing’ them under a licence. Most purchasers do not bother to read the details of the terms and conditions they agree to when buying music but the small print makes it clear that music bought through iTunes should not be passed on to others. Since Willis – who occasionally sings with a blues band and has appeared in a video for Damon Albarn’s band Gorillaz – has apparently spent thousands of dollars downloading music on to ‘many, many iPods’, he is keen to be able to hand it on legitimately to daughters Rumer, Scout and Tallaluh. One approach he is reportedly considering is to ask his legal team to establish family trusts as the ‘holders’ of his downloaded music. Another option is to support on-going legal action in five US states to give downloaders more rights to do what they want with their music. The legal actions face immense difficulties thanks to the enormous powers Apple
established for itself at the start of the digital music age. It can freeze the iTunes accounts of those it believes are passing on music to others and forbids the transfer of songs to MP3 players other than its own iPods. Similar problems apply to the digital books millions download to electronic reading devices such as Amazon’s Kindle. And, with sales of digital media soaring, the issues around ownership of the books, music and films involved are affecting more people. Solicitor Chris Walton said: ‘Lots of people will be surprised on learning all those tracks and books they have bought over the years don’t actually belong to them. It’s only natural you would want to pass them on to a loved one. ‘The law will catch up, but ideally Apple and the like will update their policies and work out the best solution for their customers.’ Willis’s time as an occasional musician has helped make him passionate about who owns digital recordings. Originally in a blues band called Loose Goose, he has more recently played guitar and sung with The Accelerators – performing with them in London and for US troops in Iraq.
dozens of firms involved in construction, machinery, food, education, the media and even a professional football club. Its media holdings include the Washington Times and the United Press International news agency, and it also dominates the fishing and distribution
industry supplying sushi outlets in the US. In 1974 he met President Richard Nixon at the White House and urged Americans to forgive their leader for the Watergate scandal. In 1991 he travelled to North Korea to meet the communist country’s then leader Kim Il-sung for talks on inter-Korean economic co-operation projects and the reunion of separated families from the North and South. After moving to the US in 1972, he was indicted on tax evasion charges in 1981, in what his followers denounced as an official conspiracy to force him out of the country. He was convicted and served more than a year in a prison in New York. Rev Moon returned to live in South Korea in 2006 and handed over control of the church and businesses to several of his children. His youngest son, Hyung Jin Moon, succeeded him as the church’s most senior leader in 2008 at the age of 28. A church spokesman said Rev Moon’s funeral would probably be held on September 15, although a precise schedule had yet to be drawn up.
Moonies Founder Dies
SUN Myung Moon, the self-proclaimed messiah who turned his Unification Church into a global business empire, has died at the age of 92. The religious leader died of complications from pneumonia at a hospital, owned by his church, in Gapyeong, east of the South Korean capital Seoul, church officials said.
Reverend Moon, who became a US citizen, had been on life support since Friday after suffering critical organ failure the church had described as “irreversible”. He believed he was chosen by Jesus Christ to continue the work of establishing an ideal world of peace and harmony. From 1961 until recently, he oversaw mass weddings at which thousands were matched with spouses they sometimes had just met and who were often from different countries. One of the largest ceremonies, held in Seoul’s Jamsil Stadium in 1992, saw
30,000 couples simultaneously tie the knot. Critics have vilified his ministry as “heretical” and accused it of indoctrinating its followers - often described as Moonies. Born to a farming family in 1920 in what is now North Korea, Rev Moon founded the Unification
Church in 1954 and built it into a global religious movement that now claims some three million members As the church rose to prominence in the 1970s and through to the 80s, it spawned a parallel multi-billion dollar business empire encompassing

We have certainly been busy this week, every night in Decades has been sold out, sorry to any of you who couldn’t get tickets, but it really is a case of book early to avoid disappointment. Our Bitter & Twisted experience on Friday nights is proving to be a huge hit. It has been classed as a child free zone, especially for adults who want to enjoy a night out without little ones around; the theme throughout the show is “naughty – but nice”! Nothing too blue, but a little saucier than the other nights.
The menu is a little different too, starters of leek & potato soup or our chef’s special salad, the main course is beef stroganoff and the desert is either profiteroles or chocolate and vanilla slice. We offer a vegetarian alternative for those who prefer it. We had two brilliant Birthday Parties this week; firstly we had Kirian, aged 3 who had his “Happy Birthday Cake”
party with us on Sunday. Kirian is a regular visitor to Vivo Treasure Island and loves our kid’s park, so it was the obvious place to celebrate his birthday. 20 of his little friends ran riot bounced on the bouncy castles, had jumping competitions on our Trampolines, played golf to a standard that would have made Tiger Woods blush and generally had a whale of a time. They had to be hauled away from playtime long enough to eat the Birthday Tea, pizza, chicken nuggets and chips and as much fizzy pop as they could manage before heading off to play again. The adults were treated to a spread of tortilla, pizza, chips with cheese and ham, garlic bread, nachos with guacamole and a selection of sandwiches. The highlight of the party had to be when
they followed family members into the pool, it was probably the grown-ups that got an unexpected soaking as they were fully clothed!! Everyone loved Kirian’s cake which carried on the Pirate theme of the venue, as you can see for our photos. Wednesday was Ishita’s day and she
had 70 guests and a Monster High theme running through the party. Starting at 6pm, again they took over the golf courses and kids park, their grown-ups relaxed in a specially formed chill out area and let the kids get on with. By the time they all left they left our staff exhausted, but with huge smiles!

The Thick Of It
BBC 2 - 9:45 - 10:15 pm Government embarrassment, ministerial cock-up, Coalition rows, backroom deals, policy U-turns, spindoctoring, political back-stabbing, wild media speculation, and more time spent with one’s family - it can only be the eagerly anticipated return of Armando Iannucci’s awardwinning political comedy series. Roger Allam returns as Peter Mannion MP, the new Secretary of State for The Department of Social Affairs and Citizenship (DoSAC), supported by his team of special advisors, commanded by Number 10’s Director of Communications
Stewart Pearson (Vincent Franklin) and thwarted by his new Coalition partner, DOSAC’s Junior Minister Fergus Williams MP (Geoffrey Streatfeild). Also back are Nicola Murray MP and foulmouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker, in roles reprised by Bafta award winners Rebecca Front and Peter Capaldi. Both are now consigned to Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, but still desperately hoping for a return to power. China On Four Wheels BBC 2 - 8:00 - 9:00 pm Anita Rani and Justin Rowlatt embark on two epic car journeys through China, navigating congested cities and winding mountain roads to explore whether the country’s economic growth, exemplified by its booming car industry, can be sustained. If so, what impact would that have on the world and on the day-to-day lives of the Chinese people? In the first of the two-part series, the pair set off from Beijing and take two very different routes towards Shanghai - journeys which will take three weeks to
complete. Anita takes the high road, through the rich industrialised cities of eastern China. She meets with young self-made billionaires at Beijing’s Super Car club, before- visiting Great Wall Motors, China’s largest SUV manufacturer, whose revenue, like that of many Chinese manufacturers, has soared in the past few years. She also visits a solar-powered hotel, which aims to set a green model for the future, and joins young wealthy families as they embark on one of the increasingly popular self-drive holiday tours.

The Scapegoat ITV 1 - 9:00 - 11:00 pm The autumn of 1952. George VI has died, and England waits to welcome its new monarch. Meanwhile, worlds away, John Standing teaches Greek in a shabby prep school. Or at least he did until yesterday. With his department unceremoniously done away with, John decides to visit the continent in search of culture, adventure... anything to get him away from the crushing monotony of his life. It is said that everybody has a doppelgänger, somewhere in the world. Held up changing trains, John goes to a bar. It is there that he spots Johnny
Spence and feels a bolt of electricity. Johnny is his mirror image - the likeness is uncanny. They drink into the night, discussing their problems, transfixed by their similarity. John is in search of human connection, Johnny craves an escape from his responsibilities – he is an aristocratic landowner, reluctantly heading home after a disastrous business venture. The two men spend the night in the same hotel. But when John awakes the next morning, Johnny is nowhere to be seen – and a driver wants to take John “home”.

ITV 1 - 9:00 - 10:00 pm Written and created by Tony Marchant, Helen McCrory and Callum Turner star in this gripping three part characterdriven story about the complexities of love, family and growing up. Aaron Simmons (Callum Turner) is 25. He lives with his parents, can’t find a job, and - to cap it all - his ex-girlfriend Phoebe (Charity Wakefield) is about to marry his brother, Tom (Bart Edwards). Life’s not panning out the way he’d hoped. Julie Ranmore (Helen McCrory) is 44, married to Michael (Sean Gallagher) and a mum of two. The passion has long since lapsed in her marriage, but her work in
hotel events gives her brief moments of joy in the romance of others. Julie stands quietly at the back of weddings, silently mouthing the vows she knows by heart, enjoying the vicarious thrill of seeing other people happy. When Julie first meets Aaron on the night of his brother’s wedding, he is drunk, miserable, a mess. Professional and with a degree of sympathy, Julie gets the night porter to take him to his room. Julie heads home to the everyday chaos of her family, unaware that this moment was the unlikely start to an unlikely relationship.

Panorama: Trouble On The Estate BBC 1 - 9:00 - 10:00 pm Drugs, anti-social behaviour, family break-ups and joblessness: all part of life on Britain’s poorest housing estates. Filming with families, kids and police, as well as undercover with drug dealers, Panorama spent months on one estate in Blackburn finding out what it’s like to live and grow up there. The Shadsworth Estate is on the outskirts of Blackburn in the North West of England. More than 2,000 people live on the estate, one of the most deprived in the country. There’s eight year old Oshi who’s desperate to
see his Dad after a two year absence. Jordan, who at only 15, is threatening to leave his family home because of the trouble and 20-year-old Jessie whose behaviour frightens other residents and keeps landing him in prison. Going undercover on the estate, Panorama reveals drug dealers selling ‘wiz’ or amphetamines for as little as five pounds and the growing popularity of a drug called ‘Bubble’ – a manufactured chemical that used to be legal but is now banned and which is easily and cheaply available to residents of all ages.

Dead Good Job
BBC 2 - 9:00 - 10:00 pm A brand new series takes a revealing look at the changing face of the modern-day funeral and the work of undertakers: how they deal with the living and the dead, from the mortuary to the grave. The first programme explores how the modern day funeral reflects the life, loves and beliefs of the person that’s died. At Haji Taslim Muslim Funerals in London the business of burying the dead is always a race against time. Muslims want their loved ones in the grave as soon as possible after death, allowing the soul to
make a fast journey to paradise. Lilleywhite funerals has stood on the same street corner in Manchester for 120 years. Simon Lilleywhite comforts a local family as they come in to view the body of their mother and say a last goodbye before the funeral. In Leeds, a terminally ill mother of two is arranging her own funeral. After choosing the coffin she asks to see the Chapel of Rest and breaks down in tears as the reality of what she faces hits home. Later she finds comfort at her father’s graveside where her ashes will one day be scattered.

The Audience
Channel 4 - 9:00 - 10:00 pm In this brand new three-part factual series, a person with a life-changing decision to make is followed around by 50 strangers for a week. Each programme focuses on someone with a genuine dilemma, from ‘should I move abroad?’ to ‘should I kick out my troublesome teen?’ or ‘should we get married or separate?’. Unsure what to do, they turn to The Audience for help. A group of 50 ordinary men and women, of different ages, backgrounds and experience, follow the person or a couple for week wherever they go. After a week, they must agree on a
decision and deliver their verdict on the path to take. For the person with the dilemma the process is emotional, sometimes difficult and often eyeopening. And The Audience holding this enormous responsibility have to navigate through layers of heartache, resistance and personal revelations, as well as the nights out, kitchens and cramped offices of the people they’re trying to help. The Audience in the first programme meet 47-year-old Ian Wainwright, a farmer who can’t decide whether to continue running the family dairy farm for his ageing uncles, or walk away and start a new life.

CALDERS CONFESSIONS By Calder Hughes
Calder spent twelve years working as PA and Co-presenter with Jeremy Kyle on various radio stations, he is now a Freelance Radio Presenter where he answers listeners´dilemmas each Sunday night on the airwaves. We are also very grateful to have him here, answering your questions and queries as part of the Tenerife Weekly team.
Should I tell her?
Recently I found out through my teenage daughter that my best mate’s 15-year-old daughter has been taking drugs. She’s been going off the rails for a while now but I don’t think my friend realises how bad it is and that there are drugs involved. I feel bad to be the one to tell her but do you think that’s best rather than having a word with her daughter? Marianne, 42
In your situation Marianne, I
would have absolutely no qualms whatsoever about talking to this girls mother. If the tables were turned, you would want to know sooner rather than later that your daughter was taking drugs wouldn’t you? Speak to her right away and tell her that you’re ready to help and support her in every way you can. With luck, you will have caught this in its early stages and between you, you can steer this girl away from ruining her life through drug addiction. The UK government has a dedicated service to help educate people and give practical advice and support to drug users as well as their friends and family, take a look at www.talktofrank.com or (from the uk) call 0800 776600 for further information and advice. Stop worrying about the consequences of speaking out and do something decisive right now, before its too late.
I want him to leave
My 25-year-old son moved in with me when he split up with his girlfriend but six months later, he’s still here and has shown no sign of moving. I only live in a one-bedroom flat and I’m fed up of him sleeping on the settee. I thought it was a temporary measure until he sorted himself out but even though I’ve asked him to leave several times, he doesn’t seem to get the message. I don’t want to see him on the streets but I want my flat back. What can I do? Anne, 48 Sometimes Anne, you’ve just got to be cruel to be kind. Your son is taking advantage of you big time and will continue to do so for as long as you let him get away with it! Of course you want to help him out in every way possible, that’s only natural but what’s going on right now isn’t helping either of
you. Try talking to him again and explaining that although you love him dearly, he’s making your life a misery and that he needs to start looking for a place of his own. For whatever reason, you’ve both just slipped into a rut and once he realises that, hopefully, he’ll get off his backside and stop using you and your home so selfishly. Ultimately, you’ll have to be firm and if gentle persuasion doesn’t work, you may have lay down the law and set a deadline for your son to move out. As I said before, at the end of the day, you will be doing him a favour even if he doesn’t see it that way.

Facelift fear
My mum has always been desperate for a facelift but I know my dad is really against the idea and hates anything to do with plastic surgery. But it’s Mum’s 60th coming up so me and my sisters were going to club together to pay for the operation for her. I’m Just worried about dad’s reaction. Do you think we should ask him or just do it anyway as we know it’s Mum’s dream? Sharon, 29
If you really want to do this for your mum then you’re perfectly entitled to chip in and make her dream come true. It would probably be a good idea to speak to your dad and tell him what you’re all doing but its not a case of asking for his permission. Do some research on the subject and try to show him that, if done properly, this procedure is perfectly safe. Involving him in the process
from day one will help make him feel more comfortable and, to some degree, give him an element of control in terms of how, where and when this operation takes place. Finding the right clinic is important and in this case, reading about other peoples experiences online can be invaluable. If you are thorough in your research and you manage to get your dad on side, things should run very smoothly. Just don’t go barging in and telling your dad that this is going ahead whether he likes it or not. Take the time to hear him out and educate him when needed.
Can’t stop pining for a baby
After eight years of trying for a baby my husband says he’s had enough. I’ve got blocked fallopian tubes so our only hope was IVF but after three failed attempts, my husband says he can’t face any more. I know we’re in debt and it’s very stressful but I want to take out another loan and keep going until I get pregnant. I’m desperate to be a mum and I don’t think life is worth living without children. How can I make my husband see that? Tracey, 32
As you’ve discovered, IVF can be a very long and soul destroying process. The only person qualified to tell you whether its time to give up or not is your doctor. I can fully understand that you don’t want to give up hope but your husband may have a point in terms of your finances. Even if the treatment did succeed, would you be able to afford to raise the child? You’ve got to try to separate the emotions and the harsh realities of your situation but that doesn’t necessarily mean throwing in the towel! There are a number of other options that may well suit you, for example adoption and fostering can be immensely rewarding for childless couples like
you two. Speak to your doctor and listen to what he has to say rather than blindly chasing a dream which may well be impossible to achieve. At this stage in the game, its best to put your marriage first and re-evaluate your options. Good luck.

PUGH´S PANTRY By Barry Pugh
Deep Fried Bread with Minced Pork ‘Ka nom pang na moo’
Ingredients
10 pieces of sliced bread cut into quarters. 100g minced pork Fresh Coriander finely chopped 1 clove of garlic crushed 1/4 tsp pepper 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp sugar 2 Eggs Anybody that knows me is aware that my holiday destination is always usually Thailand! I travel over there at least once a year, and this little delicious recipe is one that I have picked up from my travels. About two years ago, whilst on my way back to the hotel from a few drinks with friends in Patpong Bangkok, I stopped at a little street vendor and asked what he was selling. It was a simple dish. Yet really tasty - Ka nom pang na moo (deep fried bread with minced pork). It really was
something quite different and I went on a mission to find the recipe. Two days later I was in Koh Samui and a dear friend of mine, not only showed me how they make it but also forced the Thai name of the dish into my head - it was a very amusing moment, especially as I had consumed a fair bit of Thai beer - and that my pronunciation wasn’t very clear. We laughed for days after, and every time I see her now she always makes me repeat it to her in Thai!
Method
Mix the minced Pork with all the ingredients except the eggs until it is all combined. Spread and press the mixture onto the pieces of sliced bread. Next, beat the eggs into a bowl. Gently coat the pork with the beaten egg ensuring the pork mixture is on the top when you push it into the bowl. Make sure you cover all of the coated bread
and the pork mixture! Then gently deep fry it or use a wok with moderately heated oil. Fry until golden brown. Serve it with sweet chilli sauce.... Totally different!
Have you made it? Created your own variation? Something you want to share? Let me know by email and I will add your comments next time.... editor@tenerife-weekly.com

SHARPLES IN SESSION By John Sharples
The Queen Of Hearts
A Songwriting Legend
Not all the greats make a noise about their success. A great man in the world of entertainment died this week. His name will not be familiar to most of you, but the songs that he co-wrote will most certainly be known to everyone. His hits included “Walk on by” (Dionne Warwick), “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head” (BJ Thomas), “Close To You” (The Carpenters), “What’s New Pussycat?” (Tom Jones) and “Magic Moments” (Perry Como). The entertainment world is full of such people. These are the people that make the famous people rich. They can have all the talent in the world, but a
singer without a good song might as well be delivering Hovis on a bike on the Yorkshire Moors. The man who wrote all these wonderful songs is Hal David (of Bacharach and David fame). Thank you for all those Magic Moments. Rest in Peace!
Doctor Who In Drag
I was working in Mallorca, in the resort of Alcudia when Princess Diana died in that fatal crash 15 years ago. It is incredible that it has been so long. It only feels like yesterday. I remember the outpouring of grief and how it affected so many people from other nations too. The Dutch and German people were constantly telling us how sorry they were, as though she had been one of our own families. I remember crying when it happened and I remember seeing other grown men shedding a tear. On the day of the funeral, we showed it on the big screen in the hotel bar. It was the weirdest day that I ever spent working abroad. Outside the sun was beating down and yet not a single sunbed was being used. It was as though the hotel had been closed down for the day. Everyone was inside that little bar. They all wanted to watch or pay their respects to an exceptional woman.
What a beautiful Island this is. Most of the tourists that come here think that it is a barren wasteland with nothing but rock and hotels. They are wrong. Our forest filled National Parque is an important world heritage site that has to be seen to be believed. I used to think the same way as some do today. We all have to learn! Back in the 1980’s, I came to Tenerife for my first holiday. Much of Las Americas wasn’t finished and there was plenty of building going on. I remember when
My personal views about Diana have changed slightly over the years and I still can’t quite understand the outpouring of grief that took place on that day fifteen years ago. Diana was beautiful, but there are thousands of famous beautiful people in the world. She had star quality, but so do many others. What she had was a chance to help and shine at the same time and she did it with such grace and elegance that people just melted when they met her. I never met her, but I saw her once. I was very close to her. She rode past slowly in her open top carriage and my mind took a photograph of her that hasn’t faded since that day. When she held the hand of that poor man who was dying of aids, she single handedly slayed the stigma that was attached to the illness. She brought such inner peace to many, what a shame she will never be allowed to Rest In Peace herself.
I am a fan! I love the show. I was scared to death when I was younger. Nowadays I am thrilled that the show is back and bigger and better. It is high camp adventure with monsters, villains, love and tears. The first episode in the new series was screened on Saturday 1st September. I was at work in Vivo. I had just finished posing for photographs with Barry as part of Bitter and Twisted and i ran into Christopher Miller’s office to watch the first episode of the new series. WOW! There I was, in full makeup in a frilly frock and earings with a glass of wine watching Doctor Who on a very large screen. It was like being at the movies. When the show was over, I turned to Chris and we discussed the show. Of course, Doctor Who is very farfetched, but I wonder what Chris would have said to you a year ago, if you had said that a big fat hairy drag queen would
Stop Moaning! Puerto Colon was a building site and I also remember when Los Cristianos wasn’t accessible by foot from Playa de las Americas. Now, 41 years after the first hotel, the “Gran Tinerfe”, appeared in Playa de las Americas, we have a vibrant tourist area in the south of the Island. We also have a very vibrant British community,
be sat in his office discussing Daleks with him over a glass of wine and Belgian chocolates. I can’t wait for next week’s episode!
a community that has grown with the tourism of the Island itself. I do wish sometimes, however, that some, yes I said SOME of the British people that live here would stop moaning about the way things are done here. Stop moaning about paperwork. Stop moaning about the Canarian system. If they don’t like it ..... Why don’t they go and live in Grimsby and eat fish and chips and sweep their front steps once a week. Alternatively, stay here and DISFRUTA!!!!! BASTA YA!

Johnny started dancing when he was 6, at 13 he played the juvenile lead in the provincial tour of award winning musical “Her Benny”, this included performances at the Liverpool Empire and taking part in the Battle of the Atlantic Celebrations at Anfield Football ground in the presence of Queen Elizabeth!! He completed A-levels in Theatre, Business, Law and Ethics before embarking on his WHERE ARE YOU FROM? Sunny Southport, near Liverpool WHEN AND WHY DID YOU MOVE TO TENERIFE? Everyone knew who the dancers were but we didn’t know who they were, and that wasn’t just onboard the ship, we could be doing some shopping at Walmart in Acapulco and people would recognise us!! ALTHOUGH YOU ARE IN THE LIMELIGHT, DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE SHY? That completely depends on where I am and who I am with. I find it quite easy to talk to people but am not a fan of just talking for the sake of it, if I have nothing to say I’ll be quiet and unless you know that about me it can be mistaken for me being shy or leads to people asking if I am OK!! IF YOU HAD A DIFFERENT JOB, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Never really thought about it, if I wasn’t dancing I’m sure I would be doing something within the entertainment or travel industry. Don’t think I am the ‘normal’ 9-5 type of person!! WHO AND WHY IS YOUR IDOL? To be honest I don’t really have an idol. I remember walking into the studio on my first day at dancing wearing a Michael Jackson T-shirt saying I wanted to dance like him!! WHAT TIME DO YOU GET UP IN THE MORNING? I don’t!! Anyone that knows me knows not to bother trying to get hold of me before 12pm!! HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU EARN IN A MONTH? This question used to really annoy me when we did ‘meet the cast’ on the ships! I mean, a complete stranger in a theatre full of people asking you over a microphone how much you earn?!?!?!?! As if!! Our response use to be, ‘Well Sir/Madam if you would like to share with the theatre how much you earn........!’ this shut them up and received a round of applause and cheers and laughter from the rest of the audience!! So I’ll put that to you, if you’d like to share with the readers how much you earn?!! HOW MUCH MONEY WOULD YOU LIKE TO EARN IN A MONTH? More!! WHAT DO YOU SPEND YOUR MONEY ON? Enjoying life!! Treats for me!! Partying and dining out!! WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? All my friends were paper boys at school, so just to be different, I got a milk round, however even then I was not a fan of getting up at stupid o’clock to sit in the milk van and deliver milk come rain or shine!! Hence, it didn’t last long!! After A-levels my first job was a Pontin’s Bluecoat!! WHY DID YOU BECOME AN ENTERTAINER? I started dancing when I was 6. I use to go with my Mum to pick up my sister from dancing and then somehow I was the one doing dance and drama!! Since then it is just something that has always been part of my life!! DO YOU HAVE A PRIVATE PLANE? No but I have a private chauffeur!! (AKA Bambi!!) DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS? No, this is the longest I have ever stayed in the same place so it wouldn’t have been fair to have had a pet and keep moving it around!! They are not too keen on having animals

With over 4 years working as a dancer for Classic International, Costa and Princess Cruises he has been fortunate enough to have seen and visited much of this beautiful planet. He is now very happy to be resident here in Tenerife at the new improved DECADES show!! onboard cruise ships!! When I was younger I had a fully
toilet trained guinea pig that lived in the house and I use to breed gerbils, had about 50 and use to sell the babies back to the pet shop!! WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? Chillax!! Either indoors watching a film or out on the balcony or by the pool enjoying the sunshine (if chillaxin was an Olympic event I would surely win Gold!!) I also like to dine

“Alright, I hope you heard that. She called me a noble steed. She thinks I’m a steed.”
Once upon a time, all stories began with “once upon a time”. Some readers will have realised that I started last week with this famous phrase but cut me some slack, I’m new to this! Covering fantasy last week led me to another genre that has been enjoying renewed popularity, the humble fairy tale. Of course, many children know them from bedtime stories and Disney, but since “Beauty and the Beast” back in 91,even the house of mouse has steered clear of fairy tales, giving us Shakespearean adaptations (“The Lion King” is based on Hamlet)and literary adaptations (“Tarzan”, “Pocahontas”) although in 2009,it returned with “the Princess and the Frog” and “Tangled”(2010) Now, here are the major fairy tale movie adaptations of the past and coming year. “Red Riding Hood” is a dark take on the classic tale starring Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman. A cash-in on “Twilight”mania (it shares the director, Catherine Hardwicke) reviews were not great but it’s worth a look.
Two very different takes on Snow White are, “Mirror Mirror” (out now on DVD) starring Julia Roberts as the evil queen. Although visually stunning, it was panned by critics. “Snow White and the Huntsman” (in cinemas now) rewrites Kristen Stewart’s Snow White as a warrior
Pixar at the Pics!! This week at cine Gran Sur you can take the family to watch Pixar’s “Brave”, so I thought I’d give you an idea of what it’s all about plus a heads up on what else you can expect from the animation studio in the next year. Firstly, out now is “Brave” is a 3D fairy tale set in the Scottish highlands, originally titled “The Bear And The Bow”, it’s the story of Merida (voiced by Kelly McDonald of “Trainspotting “ fame), a feisty flame-haired princess who would rather be firing arrows with her bow than agree to an arranged marriage to a boy from a rival clan. Her refusal to accept tradition results in a witches curse that only Merida can stop in time! Being re released in September with a
3D update is “Finding Nemo 3D”. Those ocean visuals should be eye popping in 3D! Lastly, June 2013 sees the release of “Monsters
University”, which is actually a prequel to the smash hit “Monsters Inc.”, also getting the 3D treatment. Billy Crystal and John Goodman will reprise their roles as Mike and Sully, in the story of how they met in college. All sounds like great fun, so glad I’m not a grown-up yet!!
Brave (PG) Showing daily at 15:30 hr - 100 min Animation | Adventure | Action Starring Kelly Macdonald, Merida (voice) Billy Connolly, Fergus (voice) Emma Thompson, Elinor (voice) Julie Walters, The Witch (voice) Robbie Coltrane, Lord Dingwall (voice)
princess, mentored by Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth as the huntsman and stealing the show, Charlize Theron’s deliciously evil queen. Coming soon are,” Jack the Giant killer”, with Nicholas Hoult ( “About a Boy”)as Jack, directed by Bryan Singer (X-Men),
and “Hansel and Gretel:Witch Hunters”, an action comedy horror, with Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretal (Gemma Arterton )transformed into lethal weapon- toting killers!! Film isn’t the only place to see a renewed interest in fairy tales, two US TV series are “Once Upon A Time”, in which the evil queen casts a spell transporting fairytale characters to the “real world” town of Storybrooke, wiping their memories, featuring flashbacks to fairy tale land, its fun spotting the real world equivalents of well-known characters. Finally is “Grimm”, the story of homicide detective Nick Burkhardt, who discovers he’s the latest descendant of the brothers Grimm and his destiny is to protect humanity from creatures of myth that live among us disguised as humans! This is enjoyable, although the creature effects sometimes leave a lot to be desired. Both are out now on DVD. I Hope you’ve enjoyed revisiting these childhood stories, by the way, last week’s quote was spoken by the Goblin King (David Bowie) in one of my wife’s favourites, “Labyrinth”.
Let’s talk about Seth!
To celebrate the release of “Ted” in cinemas, here is a quick look at some of the creator’s TV shows. Seth Mcfarlane is the creator, writer, director producer and voice actor of the new hit comedy movie “Ted” about a foul mouthed, boozy, pot smoking cuddly toy that won’t grow up. His childhood pal John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) who as a boy wished him alive is now 27 and needs to commit to his girlfriend of 4 years who is cajoling him into marriage but a certain furry friend keeps getting in the way...... If any of this seems familiar to “Family Guy “ fans there is a good reason, as Seth is responsible for all of those jobs on that show too, as well as “American Dad” and “Family Guy” spinoff, “The Cleveland Show”. A running theme in all of the above seems to be strange characters, like babies, aliens or dogs to name a few, with some serious character flaws! Stewie, a baby who talks with a camp English accent (and has a head shaped like a rugby ball) is a criminal mastermind who longs for world domination, Brian, a talking dog who enjoys a good drink but still can’t help but fetch when someone throws a ball, Roger the alien in hiding who lives for daytime TV and cocktails and pretty much any pills he can get hold of. This week’s action
Sloop Bar 5 V 5 Atlantis Crew Things got off to a good start for Bar Sloop unfortunately for us, Liam, Paul and Kevin pulled back the game to finish on a draw on the last 3 games. Also well done Nobby and Adam who have just joined the gang, well played. Thanks also to Allan (ex Connors Bar) who played his last game for Sloop on Tuesday before returning to the sunny UK. I´m sure all the league wish him well and we´re hoping he might turn up as a wild card for us on his next visit back. Bar 180 A 7 v 3 Leones 180 A Racing into a 5-1 lead and after that the result was never in doubt. Clouseaus Diamonds 6 v 4 Nauta B Martin failed to impress as Frank won an interesting safety battle to give the visitors the lead. A sharp intake of breath seemed to keep the black out of the pocket, allowing Paul to clear up nicely next time round. The fourth frame was the highlight of the night when an inspired Stig broke and potted a Red, then proceeded to pocket all seven yellows and leave a straight black, which he managed to rattle in the corner. It was third time lucky before he claimed the frame. The visitors came back to 3-2 with the first doubles. Frank claimed his second scalp of the night as he outplayed a faltering Raj. The home side dug deep to claim the final three singles to claim the 6-4 victory. Bar Tasca A 5 V 5 Target Rangers Tasca were lucky to get a point as Bungalow rode his luck again to keep his 100% record against George, who was close to 7 balling him. Ian played a blinder in his doubles with Jamie, he potted a tough black down the cushion to put tasca 4/2 up. Alex seemed a little rusty, his mind elsewhere after proposing to Kirsty, congratulations from all !
Barracuda Bandits
Bar Tasca A Britannia Inn 2 v 8 Trap Door Well done to little Chris, who was the only person to win for the Brits, including a 7 baller against Marcus and many white in/offs from both teams. Very scrappy but a fair result. Nauta A 5 V 5 Clouseaus Emeralds This local derby had its twists and turns and all even going into the final four frames. Martyn made it look easy against white ball Ray,and Petes little dog “ Mouse “ could have played better than him but he still won leaving Jack and Ray C to salvage a point which they did after both players had six shots each on the black ! A real “black ball thriller” ( yawn ! ). Fosters 8 V 2 Bar Tasca B Great game between two very sporting teams and closer than it looked. Bradley just missed out on a clearance jawing the black. Tasca’s Martin, Rab and Caren, pushing Fosters players to their limit. Hoops 7 V 3 Bar 180 Titans Hoops got off to great start and quickly went into a 2 frame lead with John and Chris but Titans rallied with the next two to level. Hoops took control with both doubles and when John beat Leon it was hard for Titans to come back, “(wo)man of the match” Terese restored a hope for Titans but Carl put out the flame in the next and it was game over...Dean went onto win the last to make it 7-3.

CD Tenerife Purring With Second Straight Win
Bruno
Aridane alongside a Rayo player
The smiles were back in Santa Cruz as CD Tenerife dismissed Rayo Vallecano B with two unanswered goals and plenty of good football on Sunday. Aridane was again in cracking form adding his third goal of the new season and setting up another for Loro with the sweetest of back heels – and all this in the opening 19 minutes. The influence of new coach Cervera can clearly be seen, there’s a more composed feel about Tenerife and players are keen to overlap and support each other.
By Colin Kirby
Rayo looked poor while the referee and his linesmen looked lost and served up a string of late and laughable calls. It’s just as well that Tenerife imposed themselves on the game from the start, Medina anchored the midfield and Chechu scampered down the right to open up the visitors for Aridane to power through for the opening goal. The big forward showed glimpses of his close control last season, it shone through again when the ball broke to his feet after a defensive mix up. Hemmed in Aridane rolled the ball back to Loro who
A Tough Road For CD Marino Home will have never looked so welcome for CD Marino as this Sunday when they play Coruxo FC in Playa de Las Americas at 11am, entry 15 euros. Pointless and goal less after three games Marino will be looking to ignite their return to the Segunda B division by breaking their goals and points drought. Following their 2-0 opening home defeat to CD Tenerife the newly promoted side had a hectic travel schedule to mainland
had space to bury it in the net – a classy move appreciated by the 6,399 crowd. Rayo couldn’t offer much of an answer, the Tenerife defence was solid, Bruno and Tarantino are building a good understanding in the centre and Llorent and Moyano like to get forward on the flanks. The second half was comfortable, maybe Tenerife eased off a little but they made some clear chances. Yeray, another of the home grown talent came on for his debut in midfield but the biggest cheer was for the return of Suso. The aggressive and speedy forward failed to nail down a regular spot before moving to Scotland to star for Hearts but he was a constant threat to the Rayo defence and Abel was unlucky to hit the post after Suso had hustled his way behind the visitor’s rear guard. Ourense away this Sunday will be a sterner test but the early signs are encouraging and the new style of play has been met with noisy approval from the fans.
Spain with a Wednesday night trip to Caudal in the Copa del Rey coming home with an early 2-0 exit. Just a few days after returning to Tenerife they were clocking up more air miles for last Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Getafe B. A 4th minute goal left them chasing the game and despite an improved second half showing with subs Sandro and Noah pushing them forward they returned empty handed.

Pedal Power As Belda Wins Tour De Tenerife Cycle Race Not a side burn in sight, just a powerful pack of international bike racers as the annual Vuelta Ciclista swept through the roads of north and west Tenerife last weekend. Jose Belda of Valencia led from the first of the four days of action and continued his dominance winning for the fourth year in a row.
La Laguna was the lycra hub of the competition with the first and last stages starting and finishing at Plaza de la Concepcion. Belda was a clear champion heading off Oleg Chuzha of the Ukraine and Julien Loubet of France in the overall standings. By Colin Kirby

ASTRO-BARILINA’S TWISTED HOROSCOPES
Aquarius 20 January - 18 February Changing your lifestyle and underwear are always a good start. “Hunky-dory” is a beautiful phrase that will sum up everything for you. You see, it’s just going to be tip-top from here-on and the smile on your face is going to bug the living hell out of everyone. Pisces 19 February - 20 March The thought of you losing your mind is making you lose your mind. If you ever get out of that hole, the chances are that you’re still going to be a neurotic plague of badness. Geeks and nerds are one big bunch of cybercrimes waiting to happen. And you’re next on their list! Aries 21 March - 19 April You set your sights too high; it’s time to lower them in order to find true love. Be aware that marrying your own pets is not allowed in most countries. Taurus 20 April - 20 May Although it is true that you are not bound to find love, love may instead find you. If it does, we warn you to be wary since sometimes love can carry sharp axes and other instruments of pain.
Gemini 21 May - 21 June A financial pressure will exert itself this week and cause problems with your love life. The trip abroad you had promised yourself will have to go onto the backburner as you try to resolve how your lover managed to spend 3,500 Euros shopping on the internet. Cancer 22 June - 22 July You will feel cleansed this week after a visit to an oncologist ends with sexy results. Or at least, you’ll prefer to think of them as sexy, though your nightmares may last until the autumn of next year. Leo 23 July - 22 August Love makes the world go round, and peaches make a very nice accompaniment to sweetcorn. Falling in love is as easy as touching your elbow with the fingers of the same arm. Wherever possible, try to avoid it. Virgo 23 August - 22 September Serendipity is right around the corner, waiting for you to bump into it. If you pause, try and scrape off something unspeakable from the bottom of your shoe, you might miss it. However, if you keep the unspeakable on your shoe and meet your serendipitous friend, the smell might be off-putting enough to close the deal. It’s a funny old world.
Libra 23 September - 23 October Everything will suddenly sound good to you. This may be due to a syringing appointment you have earlier in the week, or it may be because love has just entered your life in the form of someone floating down a river in a large plastic swan-type boat. Scorpio 24 October - 21 November Charity begins at home. So when you get home remember to give something to your loved one that is unexpected and rude. When questioned; be armed with the ready response “Charity begins at home...” and so on. Love is like a sea full of sea turtles. Or at least, it should be. Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December Love should be grasped like a nettle and embraced like a bulldog, never let love out of your sight or you’ll have to endure it’s never ending damnation. Capricorn 22 December - 19 January If you think you’ve got problems, just wait until next week! Sandwich is your lucky word for today and is likely to be involved in some sort of belly-filling incident. Eating well will dominate your life over the coming fortnight as you try hard to keep your liver from imploding.
