Criminal prosecutions against those implicated in the Hillsborough disaster are looking increasingly likely after South Yorkshire’s chief constable said police officers who engaged in a cover-up should face charges.

The damning report by the Hillsborough Independent Panel exposed the full extent of police failings that led to the tragedy and their subsequent attempts to shift the blame on to the 96 victims who died. The report found that 164 police statements were altered, 116 of them removed or

altered “unfavourable” comments about the policing of the match and unfolding disaster. David Crompton, who was appointed chief constable of South Yorkshire Police in April, said the issue of criminal responsibility for the changing of statements was the same as in any other

situation. “If someone has falsified something and breaches the criminal law then, that applies to anybody, whether it’s in relation to Hillsborough or anything else. They should face prosecution, let’s be clear about it,” he said.

Is it me, or have the days got a tiny bit cooler? I used to be one of those people who said it could never be too hot. May I now take that back? The past few weeks, has it really only been weeks, the weather has been ridiculously hot. I am aware we live on a tropical island, but seriously, enough already. Please, please, please can we have some rain now? I know most of you will have heard some way or another about

the dreadful story of Vela, the German shepherd brutally abused by her owner. Thankfully he has been thrown into prison, albeit for only three months and had to pay out thousands of Euros to the vets that had to treat her. I can’t be the only one who is delighted that animal abuse is finally being taken seriously here. When I moved here ten years ago, I questioned why so many owners treated their “pets” so badly. I was told that some people treated their animals as possessions and could do with

them what they liked. This meant that they could lock them outside on balconies all day in the heat and sunshine with not an ounce of shade or water, exercise was never given a thought no matter how large the animal. Perhaps now that someone has been imprisoned people will realise that, as the old adage goes, animals have rights too. Ok, rant over, wishing you all a very good, and slightly cooler week! See you all next week,

Continued from page 1 Liverpool-born shadow health secretary Andy Burnham, who was instrumental in the creation of the panel, said the role of serving police officers implicated in the report must be investigated further. “There now has to be a process of investigation into what they did, what they knew, what they ordered, and where accountability lies,” he said. Sir Norman Bettison, chief constable of West Yorkshire Police who was the most senior serving officer involved in the discredited South Yorkshire Police investigation after the Hillsborough disaster, said he welcomed the disclosure of all the facts “because I have absolutely nothing to hide. I never altered a statement nor asked for one to be altered,” he said in a statement. MP Keith Vaz, chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, has written to Home Secretary Theresa May, Sir Norman and Mr Crompton about the report. He said: “It is of the upmost importance that we know when and how the investigations into these shocking police issues will commence and who will be doing the investigating.” The families of the Liverpool fans killed 23 years ago have started studying the contents of the report and pledged to carry on their fight by pursuing criminal prosecutions against those who they said should “hang their heads in shame”. Relatives of the victims, largely represented by the Hillsborough Families Support Group, will meet in the coming days to discuss how they take matters further. One of their first steps will be to start the process of overturning the inquest verdicts of accidental death, which is already being considered by the Attorney General, Dominic Grieve. He is likely to ask for further representations - mainly from the families involved - and also speak to legal experts. An application to the High Court for a fresh inquest could take weeks or months. Margaret Aspinall, chairwoman of the Hillsborough Families Support Group, said the verdicts of accidental death were a “disgrace”. They were a mockery and the system should be ashamed of itself. The fight will go on,” she said. Support group president, Trevor Hicks, who lost two daughters at Hillsborough, also said they would now press for

Desperate to escape criminal action against those involved in the disaster. He said the report disclosed shocking “depths of depravity” in the way the police tried to blame the fans after the disaster. The Football Association commended the Hillsborough Independent Panel for its “exhaustive and professional work” and highlighted the improvement to safety at grounds since the disaster. “The FA reiterates its deep and on-going sadness at the dreadful events that unfolded on 15 April 1989,” a statement said. “The organisation’s thoughts at this time remains with the families of all those who lost their lives in such terrible circumstances, as well as everyone connected with the city of Liverpool. “The FA and English football has changed immeasurably, and has learnt many lessons in the last 23 years. Through advancements in safety and investment in facilities English football is now a much safer, more welcoming

environment for supporters.” In light of the report, The Sun newspaper has printed a front page apology for its role in the Hillsborough tragedy, under the headline ‘The Real

Truth’, saying it was “deeply ashamed and profoundly sorry”. Just days after the disaster, it published a notorious front page headline, ‘The Truth’, reporting the police’s version of events.

NEWS IN Puerto Colon lights BRIEF

Narcotics Group officers from the Brigade of the Judicial Police of the South Precinct have arrested a foreign national at his home, after it was discovered he had more than a hundred marijuana plants, some of which are more than five feet tall. It is thought he cultivated the plants at his house in Armeñime. A large deployment of police arrived in the main square, next to the church, shortly after one o’clock in the afternoon. National Police officers arrested the occupant of the third floor of Gustavo Adolfo Becker Street. The lack of rain and consequent drought could be the cause of the low number of giant lizards born this year on El Hierro. The lizard, an endangered species, has had the lowest number of births recorded compared to previous years. This year only 24 have been born in the breeding centre in the Valley of the Gulf, although Michel Angel Acosta, director of the Environment of the Cabildo of El Hierro, said that there are thirteen eggs still not hatched. The specimens that were born this year will be transferred shortly to new centre facilities specially built for the reintroduction of the giant lizard to El Hierro

This week marks the 6 months anniversary since an elderly couple were reported as missing in Gran Canaria. The couple were last seen on March 6, 2012 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria at about 6pm. They have been named as Antonio Quesada and Ana Maria Artiles, both disappeared about 6:00 pm on March 6, last seen in the area of Guanarteme, the capital of Gran Canaria. It was a relative who raised the alarm with National Police. The missing woman is quoted to have had a hip replacement and the man a transplanted kidney and is also diabetic, so he needs insulin. At the time of the disappearance, the man wore beige pants and a blue shirt and the woman was wearing a blue tracksuit. Local Police in Santa Cruz arrested a 29-year-old man for an alleged case of domestic violence, but then had to arrest the victim as well. Police were called in after several taxi drivers reported seeing a couple causing damage to a tram stop in calle Ángel Guimerá. Officers arrived on the scene and found the man had turned on his 24-year-old girlfriend, grabbing her by the neck, hitting her several times and then snatched her bag and throwing it on the ground. The police intervened, but to the surprise of the officers, the woman then lunged at the policemen who had hold of the detainee, giving the officer several blows and kicks and telling him to “let the man go”. The battling couple were taken away – in separate squad cars. THE bridge of Puerto Colon has become a tourist attraction in its own right. a 270 kilometre cable tube of lED lights adorns more than twenty meters of the marina bridge. Unique in Spain, it is the work of Tom Kunde, his company, lED Europa is based in the south of Tenerife, and he is well used to challenges of this kind. He is also responsible for the lights in Plaza del Duque, one of the coolest areas in the South. Kunde, of German origin, works with his partner in San Eugenio (Costa Adeje) and ensures that the lighting will add a different appeal to what is normally seen in the south of the island. Basically the bridge in Puerto Colon has digital tubes connected to a server that provides a lighting program from 9.00pm until

midnight. This program allows you to change to twelve different lighting effects, something unthinkable a few years ago. “We are open to other proposals on the island, such as buildings, which may work with this system,” says Kunde. “We wanted something special you could see from the Port and thought this

would be a good idea.” Puerto Colón, which houses many pleasure boats, and boasts a yacht club that bears its name, has several nearby restaurants and other businesses who have expressed their satisfaction with this new night attraction and hopes it will encourage visitors to the area.

Over 37,000 Canarians leave due to crisis THE rate of unemployment in the Canary islands, the second highest in Spain, where 52% of young people are unemployed, has forced thousands to seek work outside Canary islands, preferably in countries in Europe including Britain, Germany and France, but also australia, Brazil, mexico or the United States.

Since the beginning of the economic crisis, whose impact began to be felt in 2008, a total of 37,086 have left the Archipelago in their quest to find a job outside the Spanish borders. The Canary Islands are at the top of the list of all the regions for the number of people who have gone out of their homeland to find work during the last four years. Islanders living abroad have increased by 51, 5% since late 2007. In the first

half of the year, some 6,063 people living in the Canary Islands, of which 2,205 were Spanish and 3,858 foreign nationals left the Islands. According to the Spanish Electoral Roll Abroad (CERA) in 2008 1,201,433 Spanish adults lived outside Spain. Four years later, this figure rises to 1,509,333,

representing an increase of 25.6%, 307,900 Spanish workers have packed their suitcases to find work abroad. Those who have decided to pack up and leave the country are, for the most part, young people between 25 and 35 years of age, with advanced degrees or are highly qualified, fluent in one or

two languages and have no dependents. A recent study by The Network, an international alliance of job portals and HR companies formed by 124 firms, has surveyed over three thousand Spanish. 30% of them are willing to migrate to find work. The figure rises to 57% among the population with higher education.

Fast & Furious latest? LOCAL NEWS

aS some of you may be aware, our island is once again host to Hollywood as the latest instalment of “The Fast and the Furious” street racing movie series, began prepping for filming on location here. Filming began in July in London and also at Shepperton studios, doubling for Piccadilly Circus after director Justin Lin was denied permission to blow up an oil tanker at the famous landmark! Tax benefits seem to be the main reason for filming here as originally it was intending to film near Marseilles but due to tax rebates, filming here could

save the production a cool $20 million!! So does this mean our island is doubling for French locations? Little is known about the plot, except several of the actors and film makers involved have indicated that this instalment will move away from the “street racing” plots of its predecessors and move toward a traditional “heist” movie, more like “The Italian Job” type films, in an attempt to widen the appeal from just petrolheads. Also, much like our last blockbuster guests from “Clash” and “Wrath Of The Titans”, the crews may very well be back soon as “Furious 7” is a continuation of the same story and was initially planned to be a

Picture taken at the “Secret” storage area in the south

“back to back” production. The movie’s stars are currently filming in London and main protagonist Vin Diesel recently released a picture

on his twitter page, it is not known if the stars Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be filming very much on the island, it may be

mainly racing and stunt scenes that are filmed. Most of the filming is expected to be around Santa Cruz and Puerto De La Cruz.

ryanair in Ocean Festival in adeje Flight Scare

iriSH airline ryanair has reported that a flight bound for Gran Canaria had to return to Barajas airport about 40 minutes after taking off, after suffering a loss of cabin pressure. The incident triggered memories of the accident, four years ago, when a Spanair jet crashed, killing 154 people. it was on the same route as this latest incident. The company confirmed that an aircraft had suffered a depressurization and the pilots made the usual procedures for such cases: “It began a controlled descent of the aircraft to the appropriate height,” said Ryanair. On its return to Madrid airport, the plane landed normally and the passengers were taken back into the terminal. A new aircraft was scheduled to cover the route that took off from Barajas at 11.22 hours (local time) and arrived at Gando airport, Gran Canaria at 12.52 am.

Before being placed on the new flight, several passengers complained of suffering from severe pain in ears and head. Some even claimed to have slight bleeding due to sudden pressure drop experienced and more than a dozen had to be treated by the medical service at Barajas airport After receiving medical attention, not all the passengers wanted to fly to Gran Canaria in the second plane, fear and mistrust made 20 travellers to stay in Madrid, it is claimed that there was “an obvious burning smell” during the incident. This

has not been confirmed by the Company. Earlier in the week Ryanair also reported that one of their flights from Leeds requested priority landing in Lanzarote for lack of fuel. The Development Ministry will determine whether these incidents are a direct result of some kind of “bad practice” in aviation security protocols, in which case sanctions would be taken against the airline, according to ministry sources confirmed yesterday. Currently there are three open disciplinary proceedings pending against Ryanair.

Three months Prison For Dog abuse

THE head of the Criminal Court in Santa Cruz, Tenerife has issued a landmark decision in the archipelago as a man was convicted of mistreating an animal. In the ruling, which has only just been made public, the magistrate judge condemned an octogenarian to a term of three months in prison and to pay compensation to the two vets who attended Vela, a female German Shepherd who was found on May 4, 2007 in a dumpster near a farm in Las Cañadas, in the municipality of Guimaras with multiple wounds. The magistrate judge found that the owner was

the perpetrator of abuse to a pet as defined in article 337 of the Penal Code and sentenced him to three months’ imprisonment and the payment of compensation to the Noah’s Ark veterinary clinic, of 5,739.72 Euros, and the vet centre Gallega with 276.70 Euros. As outlined during the trial, the defendant left the dog after causing multiple injuries to her back, legs, ears and head with a skewer and then sprayed her with a caustic substance that burned her skin. The defendant, at trial denied mistreating the animal that a friend had given him and only admitted that he had “fed her.”

THE few crops of Canary potatoes that have survived the Guatemalan moth, which came to Tenerife 13 years ago, will cost three times as much because of the damage that the pest is causing to crops, especially in the north of the island, representatives of associations and agricultural cooperatives have warned. Medianías Cooperative, which consists of horticulturists San Juan de la Rambla and some neighbouring towns states that the company has shrunk from 600,000 kilos production in 2011 to only 200,000 kilos of potatoes this year. More than half of the production has been lost and some farmers have even lost seeds collected in previous years because of this pest. The president of the Cooperative Medianías, Alfonso Peraza, warned that the consequences of this insect are “very serious”. Of the 500,000 kilos of potatoes harvested this year, “300,000 have failed because they are infected, and of the 200,000 that appeared to be in good condition, there is also a percentage affected,” he said. “The Papa will cost three times as

Potatoes set to triple in price

much as usual.” The regional secretary of the Union of Small Farmers and Ranchers (UPA), Mario School, and his counterpart in the umbrella organization of Farmers Organizations in Tenerife (COAG), Miguel Lopez, also expressed concern about the effects of the Guatemalan moth on crops north of the island. Both also indicated that there are virtually

no local potatoes in the market place, so that before long “it will triple the cost of a kilo, and is increasingly expensive,” said COAG representative. Miguel Lopez estimated that farmers have lost up to 60% of production because of the insect. The main reasons that the moth has been able to devastate such large number crops are drought and heat, because rain hampers

egg laying and slows down reproduction. Recent higher temperatures and lack of rainfall means that the pest has spread rapidly. Added to this there is a shortage of water for irrigated crops. “There is no water and some farmers are saying that some pools are closed for days, others have kept the reserves to a minimum and that stored water can poison the earth.

There are so many problems that “many farmers are hesitant to plant their seeds and others have gone for days without being able to irrigate their crops because they had no water,” said Peraza, It is clear is that more drought means more parasites affecting the fields.” “We must find a solution, we have to fight the moth with natural products.” To fight the Guatemalan moth and seek solutions to the water shortage, the City of San Juan de la Rambla has created the Task Force, an organization of about 13 farmers in order to share information, seek solutions for all farmers on the island. The Cabildo of Tenerife recommends harvesting the crop and removing the potato field affected by this bug, as it could become a source of contamination for the next harvest season. To help affected farmers the Corporation Island and municipalities have distributed various containers for damaged kernels. The waste collected is taken to the Environmental Complex Arico. The head of the Agriculture of the Cabildo, Domingo Rios, also reported that they are offering free traps for moths. Because they are made with water, insects get trapped in the bottles. In total, the Corporation has more than 10,000 stocks to distribute.

Carlos Aranda said he parked his car at the cemetery Chamorga and started out with his friends on a path with a sign that indicated that at 3.5 km they would be on the beach. However they reached a fork and were unsure which direction to head in. “We were wrong because there were several roads and there was no sign” said They finally reached the coast and enjoyed an afternoon of sun and sand, but decided to return by a different route. “I knew the Antequera area because I had previously gone by boat, but never on foot. The problem was that we went into a ravine and ended up on a goat path so

steep that it seemed too dangerous to go up,” said Aranda. There was no signal on any of the mobile phones they had with them and seeing that it was getting dark, they decided to find a place to shelter overnight. “It was very dark and all I could hear in the distance was the sound of the goats,” said Maria Luisa. The only food they had with them was three loaves of bread and a bottle of soda. “At dawn we returned to the coast to see if low tide would allow us to go from the cove where we were to Playa de Antequera” Meanwhile the emergency services had been alerted about the disappearance and the local police in Santa Cruz, located the car, a Renault Express parked at Aranda. After finding the vehicle they worked with the emergency services and, after nearly two hours of searching eventually found the group. “It was awesome because we did not think anyone would be able to find us unless we were in the middle of the beach,” said Carlos Aranda. After confirming that they were all fit and well, and feeding them yogurt, the GES helicopter took them to the airport of Los Rodeos, from where they managed to find their way home.

letters To The Editor

Dear Barry, Your ‘Ka nom pang na moo’ brought back many lovely memories of the four years we lived in Thailand, but I cannot let this one go! You should be encouraging folks to never buy from street vendors, Not encouraging them to do so! Where do the street vendors wash their hands after relieving themselves against walls or on street corners? Answer they do not ............. any decent Hotel or similar establishment refuses them entrance. So if ‘tourists’ do not want ‘funny tummies’ leave the vendors to the locals. This is the only way the cleanliness message will get across to these lovely people. Locals are well used to tummy bugs as most delicacies in Thailand include ‘Pan fried Cockroaches, indeed all kinds of Bugs .. some are even dipped in Chocolate! Certainly not the type of dish most tourist tummies could cope with and/or adapt to. We know a lovely Thai family with a restaurant in Chaweng, Koh Samui, who could not understand why tourists did not frequent their restaurant. The toilets ......... and believe me I am broad minded ..... They were straight out of a horror story! I shall not even begin to describe them, let your imagination run wild ......... You got it? So we informed them, if you want tourists to spend their Thai Baht you must install new, clean toilets. They did and what a difference it made to their trade. Motto: If you want folks to use and see the delights of Thailand, cater for them; After all, you need them! For the folks here in Tenerife, please do try the lovely recipe, it’s cheap and nourishing (Pork being very reasonably priced). Barry, any further Thai recipes would be great. Here’s to your cooking page!

Sincerely - Diana Rossall - By Email

Dear Diana, Many thanks for your kind email, and it is brilliant to hear people’s comments and suggestions! I strongly agree that cleanliness is always an issue in any form of catering establishment whether it be a 5 star hotel, takeaway, small independent cafe or even a street vendor. I for one am very picky about where I eat, and I also have a funny crazy rule that if the establishment has pictures of their dishes on their menu then simply - leave it alone! I have to say I agree and understand what you are saying in your email. Toilets are always something that tells you a lot about the business - let’s face it- if they can’t clean them; what will the kitchen be like?? Whenever I travel I ALWAYS try the local cuisine, whether be it from a street vendor or in a fine restaurant. Street vendors in Thailand are, as you well know the main places where Thai people eat daily. I have many friends over there and every time I go they are always buying food from the street and sitting down in groups sharing what they have. I do believe that this is sometimes the best, tastiest and cheapest way of trying out the local delicacies. If it’s good enough for them, then it’s good enough for me! With restaurants that cater for the tourist, flavours and spices are often weakened to try and adapt to the international traveller. As you will know from spending

four years in the beautiful country, there is so much choice on offer on every street and corner of Thailand. I do hope you feel that I wasn’t trying to encourage people to eat from street vendors, as I was just trying to share a magnificent recipe that was shared with me by some wonderful Thai friends. It should always be people’s choice if they wanted to dine on the roadside, whether it is in Thailand, Indonesia, or anywhere else in the world come to think of it! (Even in the UK!) Some people do have very hardy tummies and some have very weak ones. I do have to secretly admit to you that once I was in Bangkok, was dining with some friends when the waiter gave us (what I thought was a tray of nuts, the lighting was very dim!). Whilst talking after dinner and drinking our liquors realised we were eating fried insects! I can admit I have tried it!!! But dipped in chocolate, or go and buy 4oz from the street vendor in your dreams! Last April I was staying at the Amari Watergate in Bangkok (Prathunam) on the way back from Koh Samui. The day we left we had a lovely hearty meal in the luxury hotel. Within hours I was extremely poorly, (just in time for my night flight back to Madrid!) I ended up in Candelaria upon arrival in Tenerife, and was diagnosed with severe food poisoning. It just goes to show that regardless of where you eat, you can fall poorly from food contamination! I hope this email reaches you in good stead, and hope you continue to enjoy the column in the future, there’s lots of exciting things going in throughout the next few weeks, and if there is a special recipe that you would like to share with us, then please do not hesitate to get back in touch. Ps. I will pop some more Thai ideas in soon! Kindest regards Barry (Pugh’s Pantry!) Received in response to John Sharples article about Diana in last week’s Tenerife Weekly I was interested to read John Sharples piece about Princess Diana. On that very day I was managing a team of top athletes taking part in a 10Km road race in Derbyshire. I was looking forward to meeting my friend the Welsh Team Manager & his talented athletes and couldn’t understand why there were late. On arrival I say Mel and said “you’re a bit late”. His reply “ Maurice haven’t you heard the Princess of Wales is dead and my team & I are grief stricken”. I had not switched on my radio so I didn’t know. I have never forgotten that moment. We considered whether or not the race should take place but my Welsh friend said “Yes we must Maurice - it’s what the Princess would have wished”. We had a long respectful silence before the race started - it was eerie and so dreadfully sad. After the race I said goodbye to my Welsh friends who were so profoundly upset. Like many others I shed tears on that day and again when watching the funeral on TV. Despite all that has been said & written she was for me the very image of what a Princess should be: young, beautiful & glamorous. She had an amazing link with ordinary people both well and unwell. She says in an interview published in italian daily la Stampa “i want to bring jobs to my people ... i’ll use my privileged position. it’s what interests me the most right now. i know it’s a grain of sand in the desert, but it’s a responsibility i think i have,” Cruz said. “i’ll produce a couple of films a year. it is a way to give work to hundreds of people. it’s a set idea i have.” Cruz, winner of a best-supporting actress Oscar for her role as an unstable artist in Woody Allen’s 2008 comedydrama “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” said she has worked hard but also has had a lot of opportunities in life. The talents of “an entire generation of highly trained

young people” are being wasted, Cruz said, adding that though they have lots to offer there is nothing for them to do but “bang their heads against the wall or go out in the street and protest.” “The disaster in Spain is visible to everyone, but I also think about what’s happening in Syria or Africa. It’s unacceptable, painful and sad. Like Robert Redford said, today the world’s not a good place,” Cruz said. Regarding the global economic slowdown, the actress said the decisions governments have adopted to solve the problem “are wrong-headed and are creating more and more desperation.” Referring specifically to Spain, she said only that she is in “total disagreement” with the policies of conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s administration. Spain’s economy has been battered in recent years by the collapse of a massive real-estate bubble in the context of the 2008-2009 global recessions. The country also is seeking to bring its budget deficit as a percentage of gross domestic product into line with European Union mandates. The Rajoy government has opted for a series of austerity measures since taking

office last December, arguing that fulfilling the deficit objective is the first step out of the crisis. Those measures have been harshly criticized by unions and sparked massive street protests. Cruz, best known for her work with Allen and Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodovar, most recently finished filming “Venuto al mondo” (Twice Born), an Italian-Spanish co-production directed by Sergio Castellitto. She told the Italian daily her role of Gemma in that film and the character she played in Almodovar’s “Volver” (To Return) have been the two most challenging of her career.

madrid – The new las Vegas? NATIONAL NEWS

laS Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO Sheldon adelson have announced the decision that they have chosen madrid over Barcelona for a multi-billion dollar gambling resort project. When las Vegas Sands picked madrid for a big “EuroVegas” casino project, it was welcomed by city officials, but potential obstacles include the company’s decision to fund only 35 per cent of the resort and to demand changes in local laws. ana isabel marino, madrid’s councillor for planning and environment, said the regional government received the news “with contained satisfaction, given that this is the first step.” With Spain in recession and considering a bailout, raising 65 per cent of the cost could be difficult. And there is no guarantee officials would agree to change Spanish laws to let gamblers smoke inside the casinos and the new buildings to soar above the skyline. Analyst Ramon Zarate said, “I see capitalization by banks as being very complicated.” Zarate of the EMASI think-tank said banks were currently

de-leveraging construction projects, so Adelson would need to “pool foreign venture capital funds, but it’s complicated.” The Las Vegas Sands statement left some room for manoeuvre by saying resolution of “current economic challenges” in Europe is still a major consideration. Adelson’s plans had left Madrid and Barcelona — Spain’s two largest cities — vying against each other for the casino resort. One official even warned that

Europe’s Oldest man Dies

THE man considered the longest-lived person in Europe has died in Spain. He was 111.

Francisco Fernandez Fernandez, known as “Quico,” died suddenly at home on Friday in the small town of Pinilla de la Valderia in the northern province of Leon. Though he was born on July 24, 1901, he usually celebrated his birthday a day later on the feast of St James with his whole family gathered around him. He did this year as well surrounded by three children, seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter, to celebrate his 111th year. On his last birthday one of his grandchildren said that Fernandez was in good health. He had lived through the 1936-1939 Spanish Civil Wars, the Franco dictatorship, industrialisation

and Spain’s return to democracy. In his long life he was a shepherd, emigrated to Argentina and later returned to his home country where he took up farming, harvesting resin and lumbering pinewood in a forest devastated just days ago by the worst fire in the Castile and Leon region in the last 10 years.

regional squabbling some 20 years ago had led to EuroDisney being located in France, not Spain. But Barcelona was not to be undone by Vegas. On Friday, the capital of the debt-ridden region of Catalonia unveiled its own plans for a 4.8-billion Euro “Barcelona World” resort situated beside the existing Port Aventura theme park near the Mediterranean Sea. Barcelona’s plan would include a casino, six large tourist complexes with 20,000 hotel rooms, shopping centres, a theatre

and offices, all on land with no planning modifications required. Financing for the resort has not yet been signed. Regional sustainability councillor Lluis Recoder said that project has an advantage over Madrid’s in that it would be built on land that already has street lighting and roads, and be located in one of Spain’s major tourist regions. Adelson’s announcement was not welcomed by Spain’s opposition politicians who said gambling attracts crime and that jobs such as hotel attendants, waiters and blackjack dealers are low paying and a threadbare option for Spain’s many young unemployed citizens. One opposition group, EuroVegas No Platform, held a rally in Madrid’s central Puerta del Sol square on Saturday. Gaming investors had spotted the potential in Spain before. Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. — now known as Caesars — explored the idea of building a Las Vegas-style casino-hotel near the picturesque medieval city of Ciudad Real, 190 kilometres south of Madrid in 2005. Although an airport was built there and the site was reachable in less than an hour by high-speed train from Madrid, nothing came of the plan.

red Bull Flugtag ibiza

AERIAL mayhem returned to the Iberian island of Ibiza last weekend for the Red Bull Flugtag Ibiza, the first Flugtag to be held in Spain since 2004. For those of you who don’t know, a Flagtug is an event owned and operated by Red Bull in which competitors attempt to fly homemade human-powered flying machines. These flying machines are usually launched off a pier about 30 feet, so now you know! Around 25,000 fans enjoyed dazzling sunshine and sizzling temperatures - but it was ‘Disco Tractor’ that emerged victorious from the fun-packed event that saw 35 teams try to glide as far as possible in an eclectic mix of flying contraptions. A panel of judges was on hand to award bonus points for design, creativity and

sheer craziness. The event more than lived up to expectations. Top spot went to the team ‘Disco Tractor’, whose crazy design and spectacular plunge earned them plenty of bonus points despite not achieving the longest flight of the day. The longest flight recorded went to team Redbulando, but for them distance alone wasn’t enough for a place on the podium, with ‘Pájaros de Fuego’ from Majorca and ‘La Cigüeña maña’ from Aragon taking second and third places respectively. The fans took up any vantage point they could find to watch the event

in perfect, sunny weather conditions, although some flights were rather more successful than others. Trials biker Adam Raga was also on hand to show off his skills to the crowd in Ibiza. “We didn’t expect to win! We’ve spent the last two months working on our device. The most challenging part was making the wings. We ended up using pieces from boats, light aluminium, cardboard and wood. The crowd was amazing and the weather was just perfect. What a fantastic event,” commented the winners, ‘Disco Tractor’, after the award ceremony.

PPlE has launched the iPhone 5 in front of a group of tech enthusiasts and the world’s media. at a special event in San Francisco, apple boss Tim Cook revealed the new phone and demonstrated the features it will include. rumours had been circulating on social media sites for months about what form the phone would take. The most noticeable difference is the bigger screen size. The iPhone 4 came with a 3.5 inch display but this has been increased to 4 inches on the iPhone 5. The new screen also has a new 16:9 ratio which will allow for better viewing of widescreen video. Apple claims the phone will be thinner and lighter as it now comes with a new aluminium design. “The iPhone 5 is the most beautiful consumer device that we’ve ever created,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing. “We’ve packed an amazing amount of innovation and advanced technology into a thin and light, jewel-like device with a stunning 4-inch Retina display, blazing fast A6 chip, ultrafast wireless, even longer battery life; and we think customers are going to love it,” he said.

new iPhone 5

Perhaps one reason for the larger display size is that Apple’s rivals have already been selling phones with bigger screens. With the iPhone 5, Apple hopes to close that gap. But not everyone welcomed the new design. Some Apple fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment. One user said: “I hate to be a killjoy. But what’s so spectacular about the iPhone

Flying President

rUSSian President Vladimir Putin took to the skies in a motorised hang-glider as he led a flock of young Siberian white cranes in flight. He donned a baggy white costume with a helmet and goggles and was surrounded by several of the young birds, who were born in captivity so do not know how to fly south for the winter.

Dancing Traffic Cop

U.S. mOTOriSTS stuck in traffic on the busy streets surrounding the Democratic Convention were treated to a little light relief - by a dancing traffic cop. The officer - a member of the armed Swat team - had been drafted in as a temporary traffic marshal during the three day event in Charlotte, North Carolina. But instead of getting down in the dumps about his

temporary demotion, he decided to entertain frustrated motorists with some moves more likely seen on a nightclub dance floor. Several of his colleagues

Elvis Bible auction

a BiBlE used by Elvis Presley throughout his life surprised experts when it sold at auction for £59,000, it was expected to raise around £25,000.

The holy book had been given to Presley for his first Christmas in Graceland in 1957. But a pair of The King’s pants, unwashed and still soiled, perhaps understandably went unsold. Bids for the light-blue underpants worn underneath his famous white jumpsuit during a 1977 concert performance, reached £5,000, failing to meet the £7,000 reserve price. The entire Elvis collection, owned by a single British collector, sold for just over £100,000 at the sale at Omega Auctions in Stockport, Cheshire. The bible was used by Presley until his death on August 16, 1977. It contains his handwritten notes, thoughts, annotations and underlining throughout. Experienced pilots in the Flight of Hope project - based in the Yamal peninsula of Russia- will direct them towards warmer southern climes in mid-September. “They got used to it. They are not afraid, they are overtaking the hanglider,” Mr Putin said after landing. “They are overtaking, approaching the wing from the left, from the right, from above. Well done. Beautiful guys. Cute. They are three months old but already quite big.”

Mr Putin said it had been his idea to fly the aircraft, although it appeared to be steered most of the time by another person in a similar white costume sitting behind him. The president is well-known for his macho stunts, including posing with a tiger cub and riding a horse barechested. But critics were quick to mock his latest photo opportunity. A cartoon by illustrator Sergei Elkin appeared on the internet depicting Mr Putin wearing a crane costume. In it, he is saying: “Let’s decide once and for all. I am an alpha crane.”

You could hear a pin drop when it sold for that price. There were three rival bidders on the phone and once it got over £20,000 each bid was taking a while, because they each had a price in mind for the bible and they were thinking about it. There was a round of applause when the hammer went down. It was incredible.” The winning telephone bidder, who did not want to be identified, was an American man based in the UK. A movie contract signed by Elvis for the 1962 film, Follow That Dream, went for £6,000 and a pair of shoes made by Black Flagg Brothers, owned and worn by Elvis, sold for £6,500.

Prince Harry Back in afghanistan WORLD NEWS

P

rinCE Harry is back on the frontline, fourand-a-half years after his first tour of duty was prematurely cut short when foreign media blew his cover. Captain Wales, as he is known in the army, will be filling an entirely different role this time. now a fullyqualified apache helicopter pilot, he will be flying in support of coalition forces on the ground. In 2008, Harry was a Forward Air Controller, calling in air strikes in support of coalition forces. For this tour of duty he will be on the other end of the radio and carrying out the air strikes himself. His deployment will again prompt more questions about the wisdom of sending a royal prince to war, where he could present the ultimate prize to the enemy should anything go wrong. But the former head of the

Army, General Sir Mike Jackson, says Harry signed up to fight - and fight he must. “Let’s be clear, both Prince William and Prince Harry chose to join the Armed Forces,” he said. “They both know what is involved, it comes with the job and both of these young men understand that fully.” Prince Harry made no secret of his disappointment when he was forced to end his first tour of duty in Helmand early, in 2008. “Angry would probably be the wrong word to use, but I’m slightly disappointed,” he said at the time. “I thought I could see it through to the end and come back with our guys and the colonel himself.” Flying an Apache, Harry will be at the controls of the aircraft the Taliban fear most. The manoeuvrability, firepower and armour mean the insurgents have nothing to counter the threat so

the prince is likely to be as safe as any soldier in a war zone ever can be - though just being in southern Afghanistan at all means Harry will be in harm’s way on a daily basis. This is the other side of the ‘party prince’. Just a couple of weeks ago, he was frolicking naked in his Las Vegas hotel room, prompting accusations of immaturity. Now, he is preparing to kill in southern Afghanistan and many will ask why fun-loving Harry is putting his life on the line. The enduring image of Prince Harry on his first tour to Helmand was of the royal warrior blasting away on a large calibre machine gun. This time, he will be in control of even more firepower - and coalition forces on the ground will depend on him to keep them alive when the Taliban has the upper hand. Prince Harry received the Afghan Medal for his 10-week tour of duty in 2008.

lost renoir “Found” a PainTinG believed to be an original renoir has been discovered at a flea market in the US state of Virginia. Experts think the work of art is the Paysage Bords De Seine, one of the artist’s river scenes painted along the Seine in Paris. The woman who found it bought it for less than $50 (40 Euros). The painting is now set to be auctioned later this month and is expected to fetch more than $100,000

(80,000 Euros). A Renoir plaque on the frame prompted the woman to have it analysed. Anne Craner, director of fine arts at the auctioneers Potomack, Virginia, said: “The lady brought it in, she was very excited, but she didn’t know. She opened up the bag and straight away it just looked right. I mean it’s the colour, it’s the vibrant colour, and it’s the pinks and the purples. Renoir is known for his rapid brush strokes. And colour is really important with Renoir.”

Tanning Twin Tornadoes injection hit new York Warning

TWO tornadoes struck new York City, wrecking power lines and trees, ripping off roofs and hurling debris into the air. One struck the Canarsie area in Brooklyn, and the second hit about seven minutes later at Breezy Point, a beachfront neighbourhood in the Queens borough. Videos taken by bystanders showed a funnel cloud sucking up water, sand, and then small pieces of buildings, as the tornado moved through Breezy Point. Winds reached up to 177kph and several homes and trees were damaged. No serious injuries were reported.

Residents had advance notice from the weather service which had issued a tornado warning for Queens and Brooklyn at around 10.40am. However, the storm still took many people by surprise when it struck around 20 minutes later. “I was showing videos of tornadoes to my four-year-old on my phone, and two minutes later, it hit,” said Breezy Point resident Peter Maloney. “Just like they always say, it sounded like a train.” In the storm’s wake, the community of seaside bungalows was littered with broken flower pots, knocked-down fences and smashed windows.

The severe weather delayed play at US Open tennis tournament a few miles away, though Briton Andy Murray still managed to win his semi-final match. The tornadoes struck as part of a line of storms that were expected to bring damaging winds, hail, heavy rain and possibly more tornadoes in other parts of the northeast of America including sections of New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Tornadoes were once extremely rare in New York, but they have occurred with regularity in recent years.

HEalTH watchdogs have warned people not to take illegal tanning injections after a young woman died. Jenna Vickers, 26, from Bolton, was found slumped in a tanning shop in the town on monday. it is believed that she may have injected a tanning drug, which she had bought off the internet. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), which regulates medicines and ensures they are safe to use, has appealed for anyone who has bought the drug Melanotan to contact them. A spokesman said: “We are warning people not to use this product.

Melanotan is not licensed for use in the UK and there is no information about its safety. Side effects from

its use could be extremely serious. If you have used this product do not use it again and, if you have any health concerns, you should seek advice from your doctor.” It is not yet clear if there is any link between Miss Vickers’ death and the tanning injections, but on August 17, in an entry on her Twitter page, she indicated she had taken the jabs. She said: “Getting a l ove l y tan now ... And I’ve had no side effects :) Very h a p p y Bunny.” Melanotan is a s y n th et i c hormone that encourages the body to produce melanin, the body’s natural protection from the sun, which also darkens the skin. But the drug, which has to be injected into the skin, has not been given official approval as safe to use. A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “At about 11.10am on September 3, 2012, police in Bolton were called to a tanning salon on Bury Road following a report of a sudden death. Police officers attended and found the body of a 26-year-old woman.”

Duchess Of Cambridge makes First Overseas Speech

K

aTE, The Duchess of Cambridge has made her first overseas speech as the royal couple continue their Diamond Jubilee tour, on behalf on the Queen. Kate spoke after she and Prince William met children at a malaysian Hospice. St James’ Palace said: “The Duchess of Cambridge is keen to use her visit to learn more about how the hospice movement works in malaysia.” William and Kate were given a tour of the hospice where they also met families of those receiving palliative care. She said: “William and i are hugely excited to be in malaysia – this, our first ever visit. it has been wonderful meeting the patients, families and all the staff here, you have given us the most wonderful welcome.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took part in one final engagement in Singapore before their flight to Kuala Lumpur. During a visit to the Kranji War Cemetery, their Royal Highnesses laid a wreath in tribute to the sacrifices made by thousands of British and other Commonwealth servicemen who lost their lives in the defence of Singapore. The Duke and Duchess arrived to the sound of the Gurkha Contingent Pipers and were handed a wreath of red roses, white lilies and orchids with a message from William’s grandmother, which read: “In Memory Of The Glorious Dead Elizabeth R and Philip.” They stepped forward and laid it upon the Singapore Memorial bearing the names of more than 24,000 Commonwealth casualties from the Second World War,

before moving back and bowing their heads in tribute. The couple then stood as the Last Post was played by a lone bugler followed by a minute’s silence. Prince William completed an emotional engagement in Singapore - one which his mother Diana, Princess of Wales had been unable to carry out when her life was suddenly cut short in 1997. At the beginning of their tour of South East Asia and the Pacific, the Duke, accompanied by Kate, Duchess of Cambridge attended an Orchid naming ceremony at Singapore’s Botanic Gardens. The couple were honoured with an orchid named after them, but it was another orchid the Duke

The Orchid named after them

was keener to see - a white one named after his mother more than 15 years ago. Princess Diana had planned to visit the Orchid Garden in September 1997 to see the flower which had been cultivated and named after her. However overshadowing the tour was, inevitably, speculation about a new Royal baby. This time sparked by Kate choosing to drink water during toasts at a state banquet in Singapore. William then ignited the rumours during a visit to the Rainbow Centre, where they met young students, William was asked how many kids he would like to have and by all accounts didn’t hesitate before offering up his response, “Two.” During their nine-day Diamond Jubilee Tout, the Duke and Duchess will also visit the rainforest in Borneo, the Solomon Islands and the small South Pacific realm of Tuvalu.

BBC 1 - 9:00 - 10:00 pm The UCOS team’s feathers are ruffled with the arrival of Steve mcandrew, a retired detective from Glasgow. Brought in to help reinvestigate one of his original cases, mcandrew’s policing methods - and personal agenda - certainly raise a few eyebrows. Seventeen-year-old Georgia Wright went missing in Scotland in 2003 and at the time of the original investigation was presumed dead, a conclusion that neither McAndrew nor Georgia’s family ever accepted and have been haunted

by since. When Georgia’s DNA is found at the scene of a robbery at a petrol station in Clapham proving she is still alive, it is clear that this case is very personal for McAndrew and he is determined to find her with or without the team’s help. But as the team adjust to McAndrew’s approach to the job, they also learn a few tricks from him. Amanda Redman is Detective Superintendent Sandra Pullman, Alun Armstrong is Brian Lane and Dennis Waterman is Gerry Standing.

Imagine - The Fatwa: Salman’s Story BBC 1 - 10:45 pm - 12:05 am in this special edition of imagine, alan Yentob has been given unique access to Salman rushdie, author of The Satanic Verses, as he tells the inside story of how it felt to be condemned to death by ayatollah Khomeini in 1989. To coincide with the publication of his eagerly awaited new memoir, Salman speaks frankly about his life during those 10 years, in which he lived in hiding with full-time police protection and a bounty on his head, scurrying between

safe houses, terrified for the life of his young son, hearing horrific news of his publishers and translators being attacked and killed. For the first time, Rushdie’s protection officers speak openly about the challenges of this extraordinary security operation. The programme talks to the friends and writers who gave him shelter, to his close family, to the publisher who nearly died for him, and to the Cambridge don from whom, as a student, he first heard the story of the Satanic Verses.

Waterloo Road BBC 1 - 8:00 - 9:00 pm Havelock’s star pupil, liberty Gordon, turns to Waterloo road after dishing the dirt to the press on Gerard; Chalky’s good nature is stretched to the limits by Janeece; and Connor ignores Christine’s cry for help, as the school drama continues. Liberty is Havelock’s head girl, rising athletic star and carer to her mum, Sandra, who has rheumatoid arthritis. Concerned Gerard’s failings will ruin her university plans, Liberty secretly blows the lid on her head teacher with a damning story in the local paper. Liberty pleads with Audrey for a place at Waterloo Road before Gerard discovers

she was behind the newspaper exposé. But Michael believes it would be wrong to poach Havelock’s star pupil - Lorraine strongly disagrees. Under pressure, Gerard’s bad press threatens to overshadow Havelock’s performance in the first inter-school competition against Waterloo Road. And when Liberty unwittingly reveals she is responsible for the newspaper article, Gerard snaps. Now under pressure from all sides to prove her worth, Liberty pushes herself in the race - but when she’s caught popping pills by Tariq, he assumes the worst. However, all is not as it seems.

THROUGH THE KEYHOLE By Lynne Leadbetter

T

enerife Properties have been trading on the island for over 30 years. Their offices are located in San Eugenio, in between the Santander and BBVA banks, opposite the car park entrance to the San Eugenio Shopping Centre. Partners are Lynne Leadbetter and Mike Woodhouse, along with Sales Director Rachel Rogers and Secretary Delia Rodríguez Boue. Mike is a member of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, a member of the National Association of Estate Agents (Overseas) and a member of the Spanish College, known as the Associación Profesional de Gestores Intermediarias en Promociones de Edificaciones. His college number being GIPE 2676 and he has been practicing in Tenerife since 1988. He is also the Appointed Valuer for the Abbey National International in the Canary Islands. Property purchase can be very stressful, particularly if you are situated 2,000 miles away. Tenerife Properties aims to take that stress away for you. They assist in arranging mortgages, valuations, Spanish bank accounts, NIE numbers, contents and buildings insurance, Spanish wills and even assist in obtaining discounted rates when transferring money. In short, they assist in every aspect of the purchasing and selling process, right through to and beyond the day of completion at the Notary. They also offer an excellent after sales service.

This week’s property has been selected for its ultramodern design, and picturesque location along with a very reasonable asking price. Driving through the sleepy and pretty village of Tijoco Bajo, this house stands out as a fine example of modern design amongst all the older Canarian houses and fincas that surround it. Tijoco Bajo is located about 8 minutes’ drive from Playa de Las Americas, following the higher road along the west coast towards Guia de Isora, the village is nestled just below the main road, on the hillside, enjoying fantastic coastal views and unbeatable views of La Gomera. With only a couple of restaurants, a chemist, a church and a school this is a very small village, typically Canarian, very quiet and with a warm and friendly atmosphere. This village has been left mostly unspoilt by the building rush of past years with only a couple of new complexes having been built, both of which are small and in keeping with the rest of the village. It is a pleasant surprise, therefore to come across this very modern house in such a quaint village. The owners chose the location, right on the edge of the barranco for its dramatic and beautiful natural surroundings, looking out over the west

coast of the island and only a few minutes’ drive from the beach. The property itself is constructed over 2 floors. It is set on a plot of 500m2 with a built size of 252m2. The house is very open-plan and is designed to let the natural light in at every opportunity. It is no surprise therefore that glass is one of the major materials used in the construction of this house, with one wall comprising of wall to wall glass from floor to ceiling allowing the residents of the house un-interrupted views over the barranco and the sea. The architect has incorporated natural stone and modern ironwork into the design of the house resulting in an effective mixture of ultra-modern and natural materials. The property comprises 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, an open-plan kitchen (left empty for the new owner to make their own selection) and it has an outside, but covered-over swimming pool with a unique design very much in keeping with the rest of the house. This beautiful property is on the market with Tenerife Properties for 570,000 Euros and you can view this by contacting Lynne or Rachel on 922 724 110, 699 250 870 or 608 573 443 or emailing on info@tenerifeproperties.net

CALDERS CONFESSIONS By Calder Jon

Calder spent twelve years working as PA and Co-presenter with Jeremy Kyle on various radio stations, he is now a Freelance Radio Presenter where he answers listeners´dilemmas each Sunday night on the airwaves. We are also very grateful to have him here, answering your questions and queries as part of the Tenerife Weekly team.

Jealous Friends

I live in a shared house with two friends. I’ve recently started seeing a guy who lives 200 miles away. I go to see him every weekend and I think that this could turn into something really special. My friends are being really nasty about it though and making me feel so guilty for not ever seeing them. Are they jealous, or am I being a bad friend? Kerry

You’ve only got to please one person here Kerry and that’s you!

If this guy is “the one” for you then why wouldn’t you spend as much time with him as possible? Of course it’s never wise to completely turn your back on friends for the sake of a new relationship so my advice is to play things by ear and perhaps reach some sort of compromise. Have you thought about inviting this guy down to yours for a change? That way, you’d be keeping everybody happy and it would also give your mates a chance to see what he’s like. I’m sure they are just worried about you and want to make sure you’re happy so don’t be too harsh on them eh? Right now everything is new, not only to you but also to your friends so a short period of adjustment is only to be expected.

He’s been with a prostitute

My boyfriend recently confessed that before he met me, he regularly used to sleep with prostitutes. He says it was always on lad’s nights out or when he went away on holiday with the boys and that he hasn’t done it for years. But I’m disgusted by the idea and I can’t get it out of my head. He swears now he’s met me he’s not interested any more but I’m worried that it will happen again. Am I being unreasonable? Hayleigh, 25 Whether you agree or disagree with the rights and wrongs of

prostitution, you can’t deny the fact that your boyfriend’s honesty is a good thing. I hardly think that he would be telling you about this if he was planning on ever doing it again so I think worrying about that is a complete waste of time. Talking to your boyfriend and trying to accept his reasons for what he did is important for both of you. Ultimately, if this news has made you see him in a new light and you just can’t get past the feelings of revolution you now have, you may well need to reconsider the relationship altogether. Personally, I think you’re missing the point entirely. This guy is opening up to your like never before. If you are able to appreciate and embrace that fact, your relationship will be closer and stronger than ever before. It’s your choice and I fully accept your views but this all happened long before you were on the scene didn’t it?

Terrified of flying

My husband’s desperate to go abroad to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary but I’m terrified of flying. We’ve never left England and now he says he’s fed up of going to the same place on holiday and fancies a change. I really feel like I’m letting him down but I just can’t face the idea of flying. He says I’m being silly because I’ve never actually been on a plane before. Do you think he’s being unreasonable? Maggie, 55 Statistically, you’re far more likely to get

knocked down by a bus than die in a plane crash but I can totally understand your fears. My own phobia is with dogs, I actually used to cross the road just to avoid them before I decided to confront my fears and start thinking rationally about them! Don’t blame your husband too much for his point of view as you and I both know deep down and as countless aviation experts will tell you, your fear is unjustified. Speak to your GP and ask if he can refer you to a specialist for help with this. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as well as other techniques can work well and help you to put this fear way behind you. Most airlines are more than happy to help in this satiation too and they, after all, are the experts when it comes to flying. Explain to your husband that you do want to change this and you’re prepared to get the right help but in turn, you need his understanding and support. With any luck, this time next year, you’ll both be sitting on a sunny beach sipping cocktails together.

So jealous she’s getting married

I’ve been desperate for my boyfriend to propose. We’ve been together three years but he still hasn’t popped the question. Now my younger sister has just announced her engagement after being with her boyfriend for seven months. I’m gutted and although I’m happy for my sister, I’m so jealous and am finding it hard to be civil to her. Even worse she wants me to be a bridesmaid but I don’t think I can cope helping her with plans for her wedding when I’m so desperate for my own big day. Michelle, 23

There’s two issues here Michelle and both, if left unchecked have the potential to affect your life in a completely negative way. Firstly, jealousy is an irrational and destructive emotion that you’ve got to work hard at beating. You should be happy for your sister and ready to share her experiences with her rather than looking on with bitterness and envy. We’ve all got to live our lives for ourselves and focus on what we have rather than what we don’t have. The alternative is to let jealousy get in the way and potentially ruin your relationships with the people you love most. In short, you really

need to get a grip, I think you can see that. The situation with your boyfriend is obviously not what you had hoped for but I cant understand what’s stopping you from popping the question to him? Its 2012 you know, women are allowed to propose these days! Think it over and work out if marriage really is the be all and end all for you. If it is, then propose and see what happens. If your bloke turns you down, you’ll have a simple choice to make wont you? If he says yes, problem solved!

PUGH´S PANTRY By Barry Pugh

recipe time

This week I was sent this little beauty from Gecko Excursions. The ‘Shabba’ burger. Basically a burger stuffed with anything of your choice. We’ve kept it simple and just used cheese, but you can literally fill it with anything that tickles your taste buds!

ingredients 500 grams minced beef or pork if you prefer! 1 tablespoon Worcester sauce 3/4 teaspoon garlic paste 1 teaspoon sweet paprika loads of grated cheese of your choice 4 hamburger buns

method 1. Combine ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, garlic paste, and paprika in a large bowl; mix well. Form 8 thin patties from the beef. Each patty should be slightly larger than a slice of cheese. 2. Put the grated cheese into 4 equal piles. Sandwich one stack of cheese between 2 ground beef patties. Tightly pinch edges together tightly seal the cheese within the meat. Repeat with the remaining cheese and patties. 3. Cook burgers on a hot griddle or frying pan (without any

oil) until well browned, about 4 minutes. It is common for burgers to puff up; due to steam from the melting cheese. Turn burgers and prick the top of each to allow steam to escape; cook until browned on the outside and no longer pink on the inside; about 4 minutes. Serve on hamburger buns. Simply Delicious!

Have you made it? Created your own variation? Something you want to share? Let me know by email and I will add your comments next time.... editor@tenerife-weekly.com

Fun in the Kitchen Cooking with Power Tools! Being creative is always fun, but when you really need that electric whisk that you don’t have, or you want lots and lots of cracked black pepper for that perfect pepper sauce and you simply don’t have the energy or patience to stand there and keep twisting that pepper mill, then your worries are over! Using a power drill or cordless drill is a new concept in culinary delights; and here are a few tips on what you can do with it! 1. Get a normal whisk and attach it into the end of the drill - Hey Presto! A power whisk! 2. Got a twisty handle cheese grater - no problem- remove the handle and insert a 2” screw. Connect the 2 inch screw to the drill and in seconds you will have mountains of grated cheese! 3. Peppermill - No problem; simply remove the nut at the top of the grinder to expose the drive shaft and attach the drill. No more twisting and turning! 4. And finally it can even help you clean up from all that cooking. Find a bulldog clip and drill a hole into the centre of it. Attach a 2” bolt and secure it with a nut. Next fold the sponge in half and insert it into the bulldog clip. Attach the screw to the drill, and now you have a power sponge to get rid of any burnt bits on your pots and pans!

HAPPY COOKING!

SHARPLES IN SESSION By John Sharples

All Together Now Mind Your

This year we have seen the thirteenth Paralympic games. These people astonish us all. Their training and feats of endurance have involved far more work, both mentally and physically, than those who compete in the Olympics. most of these people have had to learn to come to terms with their situation before they could even think about taking part in training for running or wheelchair sports etc. I find it quite incredulous that, in this day and age, we find it necessary to segregate people with physical handicaps from what we would call able bodied people. I

Language

can’t get to grips with the fact that their races etc. aren’t integrated into the Olympics themselves. Now, I am not saying that the Paralympians should run against the Olympians. I just feel that their sports should be added to the

Olympics, just as any new sport would be. This way there would be one Olympic Games for all. A Games where everyone would come together rather than having an add-on at the end.

On a roll

Last January, I got the bargain of a lifetime. I went to Al Campo in the north and bought some toilet paper. It was on offer at 29 cents for 9 rolls. I bought two shopping trolley loads of the stuff. Its good quality stuff, you know the sort, soft and fluffy and plenty on a roll. It was on sale because it had Christmas trees and holly printed on it. I thought what the hell. Who cares what it has printed on it! It’s cheap and it certainly does the job!

Well, here we are in the middle of September and I still have quite a few rolls left. Every visit to the loo is a festive experience in our house! We were laughing about it when I bought it, wondering how long it would last. I think mid-October will see the last piece disappear into oblivion. I will mourn its demise. The best bargain I ever had! No more than 10 euros for almost a year’s supply of loo paper. Bet you can’t beat that!

many of us in Tenerife have a second language. Spanish is mine. although i speak it fluently, i get frustrated when i come up against a word or a phrase that i still don’t understand. This is inevitable really; after all there are many words in my own language that i still don’t understand. language is something that we never stop learning. I came across a few interesting English words that made me giggle and in the process of searching the dictionary here are some of them. Bumbershoot - An umbrella Collop - A slice of meat or fold of flab Crapulence - Discomfort from eating or drinking too much Doozy - Something really great Lollygag - To move slowly, fall behind Mugwump - An independent politician who does not follow any party Nelipot - Someone who walks around with nothing on their feet Snickersnee - A long knife Snollygoster - A person who can’t be trusted Wabbit - Exhausted, tired, worn out

Open All Hours

During the recent Olympic games, shops in london were allowed relaxed Sunday trading laws. This meant that they were allowed to open for more hours etc. now that the Olympics are over the rules will revert to their original status. How ridiculous. We are in the middle of the worst recession in living memory. The government has an enormous debt to pay off and here is an opportunity to employ people and help them to earn more money which they pay tax on. It is an opportunity for people to buy more products, which they pay VAT on, and they are going to go back to the archaic Sunday trading laws of the past.

The “Keep Sunday special” brigade is wrong. What is special about having nothing to do? What is special about not being able to shop and buy the things you need when your only day off is a Sunday. I know, I’ve been there. There is nothing special about it at all. Thankfully, the Spanish government has relaxed its archaic laws and now allows more freedom to the shops. Previously, shops could only hold their sales when the government decided. That has now been dropped and shops are now allowed to open on more Sundays of the year and more hours a week. We supposedly live in the free world. If people want to spend money in shops, why should the name of the day make any difference?

By Marc Craig

“Come and get it! it’s a running buffet! all you can eat!!” DEAD GOOD

Not that long ago zombies were consigned to the “video nasties” Shelf at the local video shop and most people would rather eat brains than spend 2 hours watching zombies, well.. eat brains! These days however it’s a very different story and zombies have invaded popular culture shuffling relentlessly into blockbuster movies, t.v, games, and comics and pretty much everywhere like an unstoppable un-dead army!! George Romero will forever be remembered as the godfather of the zombie film, in 1968 he popularised the Hatian Creole belief of the reanimated corpse with his movie “Night of the Living Dead”. However, the modern day obsession with them can largely be credited to the enormously popular “Resident Evil” videogames. Number 6 is out next month and I’m looking forward to nights of heart-stopping gameplay while peeking from behind the couch!! “Resident Evil” has of course spawned a successful movie series (four, with a fifth released this month) but here’s a look at some other zombie-friendly films headed our way! Firstly are 2 very similar releases, both family films using “stop motion” techniques are “Frankenweenie”, a Tim Burton film about a young Victor Frankenstein who, after his dog dies in

a car accident, decides to reanimate him using lightning. “Paranorman” is the tale of a psychic boy and his friends who must work together to save his town from a witches curse that cause the dead to rise from their graves! The animation in both movies looks superb, I’m sure they’ll be huge fun for all!! June 2013 sees the release of zombie blockbuster “World War Z” starring Brad Pitt, based on the novel “World War Z: An Oral History Of The Zombie War”, an unusual book which rather than a typical narration, is a collection of individual accounts. As for TV, not to be missed is the incredible “Walking Dead”, a series so well executed even my wife who is so terrified of brain-munchers she worked out how zombie-proof our apartment was before

Cheryl ls Back!

Girls aloud singer Cheryl Cole is returning to The X Factor this year! Cheryl was a judge on the show back in 2010 but quit the show last year to take a seat on the judges panel of the US version of the show, in a bid to crack America, but was sensationally sacked by Simon Cowell after a mere two weeks and replaced by former Pussycat Doll, Nicole Scherzinger, now a judge on the UK show!

However Cole will not be on the judges panel, instead she will be the celebrity invited to Gary Barlow’s house to help him pick his final acts for the live shows, a role expected to go to Take That bandmate and good friend Robbie Williams, who helped out last year. Maybe having her on the same judges panel as the woman who took her place in America last year was too bitter a pill to swallow!

Nice to see you back pet!!

Finally, just for fun check out en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Marvel_Zombies to see how your favourite marvel superheroes look as zombies! NO-ONE IS SAFE!!!

Last week’s quote came from Donkey (Eddie Murphy) in Shrek (2001) see ya next week!!

True blood star hot favourite for me Grey!

Ever since the bestseller “50 Shades Of Grey” made world news for becoming the fastest selling paperback novel of all time, talk of a movie adaptation has been rife and a movie is being fast-tracked for release as early as next summer, although no release date has been confirmed. So what’s all the fuss about?”50 Shades Of Grey” is the 1st book in the fifty shades trilogy, first published in June 2011 (amazingly) it’s a work of erotic fiction by British writer E.L. James and tells the story of troubled billionaire Christian Grey and his kinky Sado-masochistic relationship with college student, Anastasia. Aimed squarely at.... how can I put this delicately-females who are in search of their own Mr Grey (my wife has, hasn’t read it but I’m not one to boast), the novel has become a phenomenon in a very short space of time. So on to casting, rumours have been circulating all over the media as to who should play the titular character, with Ryan Gosling, Channing Tatum and “Lost’s” Ian Somerhalder as well as controversially, porn star James Deen getting a mention.

However, recent reports seem to indicate that “True Blood’s” Alexander Skarsgard who plays vampire Eric Northman in the HBO TV series is the frontrunner and if you’ve seen the show (it’s fantastic by the way), you’ll know that the nudity and sex scenes that will surely play a big part in a movie adaptation would just be “another day at the office” for Alex!! So who do YOU think could play Christian Grey?

Tenerife Weekly Pool Superleague

This week’s news and action Target Bar team (Players left to right) : Grant, Dave, rob, roy and Steve

nEW TEamS The departure of the two Mountain Rangers teams from the league last week (best wishes and good luck to Colin and the lads) has offered the opportunity to invite two teams from our waiting list to join the Tenerife Weekly Pool Superleague family. A massive welcome to JD’s Sports Bar on The Patch, a dedicated Pool and Snooker venue and to Grandee O’Donnell’s Irish Bar, one of the longest established bars on the Golf del Sur. Lowrys 3 V 7 Bar 180C Lowrys Home Hoodoo strikes again. In a hard fought close match table toppers Lowrys, again failed to produce the goods on their own patch, by falling 7-3 to an experienced bar 180C team. 180C raced to a 4-0 lead until Rab and Russ from the home side broke the run with a good win in the first doubles. Lowrys narrowly lost the second doubles leaving Bar 180 only needing one more victory to take the match. Cloughie finished off a tight frame against Don from Lowrys, who narrowly missed his final red to leave Cloughie on the black. Despite Rab pulling one frame back for Lowrys the eventual winners 180C saw the experienced Robin complete a 7 ball win in his frame. Lowrys now look forward to travelling away to meet another Bar 180 side next week hoping to continue their undefeated away form. Lupain 3 V 7 Bar 180 A Excellent display by the away team, leaving Lupain still looking for their first point! Barracuda Hunters 1 V 9 Trap Door The names and places in this little story have been changed to protect the innocent, (in truth it’s all lies anyway but it could happen). A match was recently abandoned due to a player breaking his own foot during a game.

We’ve all done it sometime I expect, lifted one end of the table when a ball gets stuck! But this geezer lifted it up too far to impress the attractive girl he was playing, but far from impressing her he managed to make a real twit of himself by dropping the table straight onto his foot. Jamie what were you doing? I think you will get stick all week, as Helen was the hero for the Hunters. (Embellishment from Jim, Bandits) Despite the result, there was a certain sexiness and dominance in the way The Hunters played...sorry, only one played, (Helen), the only lady in the team and she took the only game off the Trappers, c’mon lads, pull your socks up. Nice one Barracuda, a good night and great lasagne. (Comments from the Trap Door Captain). Leones 5 V 5 Red Pride Really nice to meet Red Pride. Excellent team. Some good long tactical games with Phil & Simon from Leones winning both games and Ian and Steve from Red Pride winning their games too. Nauta B 7 V 3 Nauta A Nauta B put some points on the board in this friendly battle of the Nauta Bar. A team stand in Joules playing for her injured man, won her two singles. A team Jack & B team Frank battled it out with some friendly banter with each player claiming 1 frame. B teams Paul 7 balled Ray C in the final game but Ray refused drop his trollies for his lap around the table, (too many kiddies around). A great night with lots laughs. Fosters 7 V 3 Leones B Missing a couple of key players, Leones struggled a little bit at Fosters, but the highlight of the night was young 9yr old Zac (little chubby brown) beating Fosters Captain Paul, much to the delight of all the players and holidaymakers!!!

Vivo 10 V 0 Dos Hermanos Another fantastic win for Team Vivo. The score line suggests an easy win but far from it, Dos Hermanos just failing to finish off the frames when they had the chance. For Vivo, both Valeri and Victor adding more games to their 100% record, and Heike narrowly missing out on a break to finish. Bar 180 Titans 5 V 5 Target Bar We knew it would be a tough game, really should have taken the match as we needed 1 out of the last 2 frames, but they’re a very good team. Well done Target Bar for holding us to a draw. Bar Tasca A 8 V 2 Britannia Inn Bungalow came through with 2 snookers to take the first frame from Matt. and Grandad taking the next. Britannia fought back to take the next two, all square going into the doubles. No looking back then from Tasca, John Boy producing a stunning finish in the doubles, Alex not missing a ball in his single, and Bungalow narrowly beating Matt again who might have finished but for the narrowest of margins on a bank shot. (Bungalow still 100%, can anyone beat this man?) Target Rangers 7 V 3 Barracuda Bandits, Unfortunately for the Bandits the wheels have dropped off their wagon since last season. Because we are the oldest team in the league some of the team are now knackered. Spare a thought for Ray who was 75 on Wednesday, keep going mate. Anyway Target Rangers were much the better team on the night and deserved their win, but that doesn’t mean that every dog has its day and we can’t wait to get you back to ours. TR and BB have a special relationship, but it’s not going to last long if you don’t let us win one, 7 times we’ve played now and we still haven’t beaten you. In case anyone is confused, this is the away captain doing the comments because TR are much too humble, love you all, great night. Spanish ladies Open Swings into Golf las americas Great sporting action, stylish leisure fashion, and a 350,000 euro money prize pot, it’s no wonder that camera crews from around the globe will be flocking to Golf las americas for the Spanish ladies Open from 20th to 23rd September. The Ladies European Tour has grown in stature over the last decade and the four day event will be like a living holiday brochure for tourism in Tenerife. The strikingly beautiful layout of the Las Americas course may wow the viewers, 35 international channels will be showing live coverage and 206 in total will transmit highlights, but the players

know it will test their game to the limit. Last years Tenerife Ladies Match Play tournament at Golf Las Americas saw Becky Brewerton from St Asapth in North Wales emerge as champion after a dramatic three way showdown on the final green. Becky, and previous Tenerife winners, Melissa Reid from Derbyshire, and Felicity Johnson from Birmingham will be among the 126 players from 24 countries chasing glory this year. Spectators are

welcome to pop along and follow the players as the drama unfolds, entrance is free and play starts at 8.30 am each day.

CD Tenerife are Free Basketball Top Of The Pile Derby Tickets For la laguna

Even a couple of late defensive lapses couldn’t tarnish a sparkling 3-2 away win for CD Tenerife at CD Ourense on Sunday afternoon. Slick passing and attacking flair lit up Tenerife’s play as they dominated most of the game in Galicia. Ourense had some early chances, Sergio Aragoneses whipped the ball off the feet of Quintairos as he advanced but the turning point came when Tenerife right back Moyano nicked the ball off Pillado as he shaped up in the penalty area. That seemed to fire the visitors, Cristo Martin set up Yeray for a delicate header that tested the home keeper and a few minutes later Loro curled a free kick into the top corner of the Ourense net to take the lead. On the half hour Moyano lobbed a long ball in, Aridane swapped it with Martin and beat the keeper for a well deserved 2-0 lead at the break. Suso came off the bench and was his usual bag of tricks, firing just wide of the goal after his persistence made a half chance and hitting the post

after ghosting past two defenders. Tenerife relaxed a little and back came Ourense, Sergio had to save with a low dive and then a tip over but with five minutes left Jona reduced the arrears with a free header. Suso started the move that secured a 89th minute third for Tenerife with Aridane distracting the defence for sub Bravo to score. The ref had been niggling all through the game and in injury time he gave a harsh handball call against Loro for Claudio to rescue some home pride. CD Tenerife sit three points clear at the top of the Segunda B as this Sunday Caudal are the visitors to Santa Cruz for a noon kick off.

Painful First Point For CD marino A 0-0 home draw against Coruxo last Sunday was scant reward for an improved CD Marino performance and came at a high price. After just 14 minutes an accidental clash of bodies felled defender Noda, he was carried off and diagnosed with a double fracture of the cheek bone, it could be a long time out for him.

The Las Americas team regrouped and thought they had a deserved lead just before the half hour. Alberto Noah powered through the two visiting central defenders to score but the ref ruled it out for offside. The game ended level, ensuring Marino a first point of the season.

From shooting hoops to jumping through them CB Canarias have finally met all the demands to cement their promotion to Spain’s national elite basketball league the aCB. On the court they were untouchable last season but joy turned to frustration as financial pressures delayed their planning for the new season.

Now the La Laguna team is determined to make an impact at the top level and are offering free entry to their local derby curtain raiser, the Toyota Cup against CB Gran Canaria. The away leg is on 12 September but they can secure early silverware in the second leg on 21 September at 9pm in the Pabellon Santiago Martin on the TF5 into La Laguna from Santa Cruz. ASTRO-BARILINA’S TWISTED HOROSCOPES

Aquarius 20 January - 18 February Sometimes the only way to succeed is by murdering the entire board of directors. Beauty and misery are a package pair for you today. Hope for luck in all your endeavours. The government will not allow you to do what you want. Pisces 19 February - 20 March Love comes when you least expect it. 36% of all romances start in the toilet. These two facts are linked and we point them out for your amusement and as something to look forward to. Aries 21 March - 19 April The capital of you is your heart - never forget that. The law may be your friend this week, or it might turn round and bite you on the bum! Either way the word “law” is going to crop up. Taurus 20 April - 20 May Drinking alcohol may well turn into the worst tomorrow possible. Try to ensure that you go out tonight wearing the underwear with the really strong elastic.

Gemini 21 May - 21 June You are disgusted with yourself as yet again, you miss an opportunity to put things right between yourself and your lover. But in good news you find some chewing gum you thought you’d eaten. Every day is a winding road. Cancer 22 June - 22 July A romantic hotel break may be just the thing to spark up your love life this weekend. Some suggestions are: cover the bed in rose petals, place some chocolates on your loved-one’s pillow, bring some beautiful flowers... Leo 23 July - 22 August Employee of the month awards carry a penalty - the penalty of ridicule. You must relax more, take long walks and fill the bath up really full so that you can soak those weary limbs. Virgo 23 August - 22 September There’s no harm in taking a day off this week. You can’t hide from the rest of the day, so I suggest you burst headlong into it without waiting for anyone to catch up. Your lucky horse is: Sombrero’s Lid.

Libra 23 September - 23 October You resolve to wait until you are married,, after all, there aren’t many virgins around at your age! The stars are not looking good for you this week as Mars pulls into a region of the sky that foretells of woe. Scorpio 24 October - 21 November Temptation looms high over the agenda this week as you suddenly notice that your colleague has rather a nice bottom and appears to make you need to stare at it. Your belief that bewitching exists is made possible. Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December Prognostication is not a good word when you are guessing the real colour of a lady’s hair colour. Remember, his/her sweetness is your weakness. “His/her?” no, we don’t know your sex. Are you a woman? I really can’t tell. Capricorn 22 December - 19 January There is a lot of anger in your brain. Douse it with cool, flavoursome beer. The future is what you make of it - and if it’s anything like what you made of the rest of your life, I’d consider buying in materials for the nuclear winter.
