ollowing the most intense September storms for thirty years, large parts of the U.K. remain on flood alert, indeed there were more than 50 flood warnings and 80 flood alerts, still in place yesterday, meaning flooding is still possible.

Many of the warnings related to North Yorkshire’s River Ouse, the river’s level has risen to above the average summer level of just over 5 meters. More than 300 properties have flooded since the storm started on Sunday; the most affected areas are Morpeth, Chester-Le-street, Stockton and Durham. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service was receiving help from Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire, Humberside and

West Yorkshire crews to enable them to tackle the flooding. In York, a number of people had to be rescued by the fire services. Crews had to use a boat to ferry carers to give out essential medication to elderly residents in a care home and a man trapped in a camper van had to be winched to safety after being caught in flooding in Acaster Malbis. Although affected by flooding, the city council

claimed that York was “still open for business” and that the flood defences would be able to cope. Yorkshire water confirmed that river water was getting into the sewer network, causing it to overload and pumping stations were working to full capacity. The town of Tadcaster in North Yorkshire had been effectively split into two after a bridge was closed after fears it was not safe. Page 3

Finally, we all got ready for the onslaught of Tropical Storm Nadine which fortunately didn’t materialise here in Tenerife. Now I know that we are desperate for rain and the heat is really becoming a bit much. But spare a thought for our friends and family back in the U.K they are really going through it at the moment, in particular the poor people who went through all the flooding four years ago, sort everything out and now have to face the trauma of it all over again. I don’t know about you, but that somehow puts all this heat into perspective, we are all very lucky to be living on this beautiful island.

esidents of townhouses in Newburn, Newcastle had to be evacuated after flooding swept away the ground beneath the new builds, leaving them exposed and unsafe, it is unclear how long the residents will be kept away as there are significant safety concerns about the buildings. Road and Rail networks are struggling to return to normal although are subject to delays and disruptions particularly in the North of England. Councils have urged the Government to set up an emergency fund to help pay for the millions of pounds of repair bills expected to pay for the repairs to roads that have been damaged in the recent flooding and persistent rain. Repairs are thought likely to be required on bridges and pavements which will stretch local council budgets. The

Government has been urged to set up an Emergency Capital Highways Maintenance Fund to help with the cost of repairs, as it did back in the summer of 2007. Even though the rain is forecast to ease off significantly over the next few days, flood warnings will remain in place due to the potential for some of the rainfall from recent days to still be flowing through river systems. Despite the easing of rain, dozens of communities have been warned they are still at risk.

Looters

Looters have taken advantage of businesses being evacuated by stealing from empty premises. Traders at the Old Fire Station building in Newburn, near Newcastle, were forced from their shops as severe flooding hit the village in the early hours of Tuesday morning, leaving shops flooded by 6ft of water.

eith Bradley from KB Cycles has owned the store for more than 25 years and says that between £20,000 and £30,000 of stock was stolen after thieves smashed their way through a first floor window. Police have recovered nine bikes. A man and a woman have been arrested. Mr Bradley said: “The police told me there was no way anyone could get in and that the building was safe last night. They’ve taken high value cycles which retail for around £1,500 to £2,000 each. I’m going to employ my own security guard to protect the shop tonight. Julie Watson who owns AJ Bridal Wear shop in the Old Fire Station building is still unable to access her premises. “I can’t get into my shop to find out if anything has been stolen because there is about six feet of silt against the entrance.” Acting Chief Superintendent Dave Byrne said: “The safety of business owners and residents is paramount and it is despicable if people are thinking of taking advantage of the bad weather and using it as an opportunity to break in to properties. We have increased patrols in Newburn, however, as always, it is important that people remember to take their own steps to ensure the security of their premises and belongings and make sure they securely lock doors and windows and use alarms where they have them.

Two Bodies discovered

Two people whose bodies were found in the River Clywedog in North Wales may have drowned after trying to rescue one of their pet dogs. The body of a 27-year-old woman, named locally as Alicia Williams, was found on a sand bank on the river near Redding last night by someone walking their dog. A search team found the body of a man, identified as David Platt, 25, in the early hours of this morning. Police said the two people were a couple and were out with their five dogs when the accident took place. All five dogs have since been accounted for.

New Banana Walk for Hikers BANANAS are still the main export crop in the Canary Islands and have been for more than a century, alongside tourism, they are the main industries of the Archipelago.

With this in mind, the town of San Juan de la Rambla has come up with a promising idea to link the two sectors through hiking. The City Council has prepared a guided tour of banana plantations packaged in order to promote the process of growing and marketing of the fruit and boost the city’s economy by attracting visitors. In November this route will be tested for the first time for the twentieth State Conference of the Spanish Federation of Mountain Sports and Climbing (FEDME), to be held in Puerto de la Cruz. The route has been sponsored by the Tourism Council headed by mayor Thomas Mesa, and the intention is to link it to a circular path known as Ruiz Canyon, climb to Icod

El Alto, descend to the historic San Juan Rambla old road and cross to the coast at the foot of the cliffs that dominate the landscape of the area.

The initiative has won the support of small farmers like Jose Yanes, “The idea seems good, because tourists should know how to grow bananas and see

landscapes they create”, who confesses he owns banana plantations that are more than 120 years old, inherited from his father!

Morgan the Whale LOCAL NEWS

THE on-going saga of Morgan the Killer who lives in Loro Parque may now be over. The whale was rescued in the Wadden Sea, in June 2010, and nursed back to health at the Dolfinarium at Harderwijk, Holland, and then transferred to Loro Parque. Morgan has been the subject of a bitter dispute following a complaint by an ecological organisation about his state of health while he was in captivity. The Proyecto Gran Simio asked the EU to intervene and have Morgan returned to his natural habitat as both his health and life were threatened whilst he was in captivity at Loro Parque. The European Parliament has ruled that no further action is required with regard to the complaint. Furthermore, the Parliaments Petition’s Committee have decided to close the case as neither EU Wildlife nor any environmental laws had been breached.

Jennifer Ellison Loves Tenerife! M A Y B E Jennifer Ellison is vying to be an official representative of our beautiful island? The star who was in the last series of Dancing On Ice and was voted out of the show at the semi-final stage in March, had spent the best part of the previous six months ‘on ice’ so was really grateful to have the chance of a sunshine break. “I needed to recharge my batteries before embarking on the

three-and-a half-week tour, which began in the middle of April. When I signed up for the show I didn’t really know how much of a physical commitment it would involve, the training was pretty tough – but I lost lots of weight. My husband Robin didn’t like the fact I had to be away from home so much, but he loved my new slimmer, sexier figure! “When I was growing up, we seemed to spend all of our family holidays in Tenerife. We all think it’s the perfect holiday place with great weather all year round, wonderful holiday towns and fantastic places to stay. Tenerife really has it

all. A big factor in our choice was that we were taking our toddler Bobby for his first trip abroad. Robin and I got engaged in the Maldives and we were married in Mauritius – both fabulous holiday places but too far to take Bobby for a short break. On Tenerife, we chose to stay at the Abama Golf & Spa Resort in Guia de Isora on the west of the island. It feels really tropical with very lush vegetation – palm trees everywhere you look – and breathtaking views over the sea towards La Gomera. The great thing about a holiday here with Bobby was that everything we wanted

was right there in the resort. On a couple of evenings, we went down to Costa Adeje to eat out in a restaurant but other than that we were happy just to chill out. We were so happy that we could all relax together as a family after my enforced absence. After all the stresses and strains of the show, I was looking for complete relaxation – and I found it! On the way to the airport, Robin and I agreed things had gone so well we would book another trip to Tenerife straightaway – and we headed back again a few weeks later. I will keep going back to Tenerife for the rest of my life.

Canarian ‘Jamon’ LOCAL NEWS

THE taste of the Canarian Jamon cannot be compared with any other product of its kind. It is 100% pure Canarian and typifies the cuisine available on the archipelago. In fact, although already on some islands the breeding of this pig has been increased, there is still some way to go so that its production is recognised for its commercial value as a true gourmet product. Master butcher, Fran Alonso, has discovered an important niche market, with considerable demand, both on the islands and worldwide. His new project is hoped will bring together breeders, public administrations, the University of La Laguna and local entrepreneurs to help promote the product and create more jobs. Alonso uses black pig as a raw material in one of his specialities, roasted leg. This recipe has been highly accepted, not only with his Tenerife customers, but also in the markets of Madrid and Berlin. The meat is roasted for twelve hours in a wood oven, with Heather and eucalyptus, wood that give them an extra special taste. In addition, another special touch

is made up using local Canary Islands oils and spices. “We want to turn the black pig into a gourmet product, and see a quality control raised up to and including when it is served to the clients,” the

Tourism Figures Increase

A BIT of good news for Spain, a record number of foreign tourists arrived in August, a rare flash of growth for its recessionstricken economy, the government has announced. Foreign tourist arrivals for the month reached 7.9 million, the highest since records began in 1995, figures from the industry ministry showed. This was five per cent higher than a year earlier. A record had already been set in July with 7.7

million foreign visitors that month, 4.4 per cent more than a year earlier. The number of Russian visitors increased by a massive 47.5 per cent, with 17.5 per cent more French and 4.7 per cent more British visitors than last year. Spain is suffering from its second recession in three years after a housing boom went bust, throwing millions out of work. Tourism is now an even more crucial sector, accounting for about 10 per cent of gross domestic product, and

makes Spain the fourth most-visited country in the world. So far this year Spain has received just over 40 million tourists, 3.6 per cent more than the same period last year, the ministry said in a statement. The British accounted for the biggest share of visitors to Spain, 24.1 per cent . while French tourists accounted for 21.7 per cent and Germans 13 per cent. The most visited regions were the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Catalonia and Andalucia.

restauranteur said. In order to publicise Jamon, Fran Alonso is organizing a series of gastronomic tastings where consumers, farmers, businessmen, and any other interested party can taste

and appreciate the possibilities offered. The intention is to celebrate these events, which it will work alongside charitable organizations, in different points of Tenerife as well as to other islands.

10 Euro Housing Raffle Arrives in Spain F NATIONAL NEWS

RENCH entrepreneur Leonard Simpatico says he’s offering Spain the chance to win a house for the modest price of 10 Euros, an original initiative in the midst of the financial and real estate crisis. Simpatico uses the formula of “collective purchase” and began raffling homes in France a year ago. “Now, we’re opening our office in Madrid and the aim is to raffle the first properties in a couple of weeks,” Simpatico said in a recent interview. “The outlook for Spain is extremely good because, despite the crisis, it’s a very attractive product, both for Spaniards and for foreigners dreaming of having a second home in the Iberian nation”. Home prices in Spain have fallen 32.4 per cent from their December 2007 peak, but sales have not increased because banks are reluctant to write mortgages. The price drop is occurring above all in big cities and along

the Mediterranean coast, where foreign buyers - mainly Britons, the French, Germans and Russians - are focusing their attention. Simpatico said that, currently, people from 33 countries are participating in the raffle on his website. He said that, after opening offices in France and Spain, he intends to establish operations in Morocco, Romania, China, Britain, Belgium and Greece before the year is out. The businessman said his company was not offering online gambling, because participants could recover their money before the raffle. “This is about collective acquisition. The house is bought by all those who are participating and it remains with the winner.”. The idea of applying this system to home sales arose from the need to offer an opportunity both to the person who wants to sell his house and is not finding a buyer at a price that suits his needs and also to the buyer who cannot get a mortgage. “Before, you worked, you went to the bank, it financed you and you bought a house. Now, this process no longer works. The

banks have failed to fulfill their role and it’s very difficult to be a property owner,” Simpatico said. Individuals interested in selling their homes can advertise on the website - www.simpaticojuegos. es - and it will be the online participants who decide on the houses they want to see raffled off. Simpatico’s company will buy

the selected homes and raffle them among those people who have bought the corresponding tickets for 10 euros. Players can purchase a maximum of five tickets a month. Each property that is raffled will go at a fixed price, so that the raffle for it will not occur until enough tickets are

sold to cover that amount. Later, a judicial agent will perform the raffle of the tickets sold for each property and the winner will “immediately” become the owner of the house without any additional expense, said Simpatico, whose company charges a commission of 15 per cent of the fixed price.

Madrid music festival riot NATIONAL NEWS

SIXTY people were injured and 11 were arrested when hundreds of youths hurled bottles and burned bins in clashes with police outside a music festival in Madrid on Saturday. A police spokesman described the incidents as “unusual” in their scale and intensity. Youths rioted when they were turned away from the MTV Madrid Beach open air festival in western Madrid early on Saturday because the concert area was full, a police spokesman said. “Trouble spilled into nearby streets and lasted about four hours, and involved around 1,000 youths with dozens of police deployed. Various

people tried to get into the festival but the venue was full. There were disturbances and containers were set on fire and bus stops wrecked”. “There was a shower of bottles,” he added. “The city police were

overwhelmed and called for reinforcements from the national police.” Media reports said that police fired rubber bullets and charged at rioters. The spokesman said that of the 60 people injured, most of them

were only slightly injured and included 20 police officers of two of whom were taken to hospital; and only 10 people were taken to hospital overall. The 11 people arrested were charged with assaulting police officers.

Car Seat Hideaway

A 20-YEAR-OLD man from Guinea removed the inside of a car seat and climbed inside in an attempt to disguise himself. Another occupant of the car then sat on the “seat”. Despite his creativity, the human car seat did not reach the European Union standards. The man removed foam

from the passenger seat and climbed inside the shell. Two Moroccan men in their early 20s joined him in this ridiculous attempt to cross the border: One drove the Renault 7 and the other sat on the manseat to complete the illusion. “We’ve seen some fairly bizarre attempts to get across the border but nothing like this before,” a police spokesperson said.

King Juan Carlos Meets President Bill Clinton

FORMER U.S. President Bill Clinton told Spain’s King Juan Carlos he was confident Spain will get through the economic crisis during a meeting in New York. The meeting - which took place before the official inauguration of the Clinton Global Initiative, which kicks off Sunday in New York lasted 45 minutes, according to sources within the Royal Palace, who added that the two men also spent 10 minutes talking in private. The conversation revolved around three subjects, with special attention to the situation of Spain and the European Union, and the former president said that Spain, just like Italy and Portugal, has enough strength to get through the crisis, adding that he was confident

that Germany will agree to act for the benefit of the EU. The second area of discussion at the meeting was the November 6 U.S. presidential election and although

Clinton said he was confident that President Barack Obama would win reelection, he agreed that there is still a long way to go before the election. The Spanish monarch and Clinton

also discussed the recent outbreak of violence in the Muslim world after the release of a video made in the United States in which Mohammed is depicted in a unfavourable and humiliating light, something that denigrates Islam’s founding prophet and which Muslims consider blasphemy, and the expresident acknowledged that he was “very concerned” over the situation. Throughout the remainder of Sunday, the Spanish king will hold informal and private meetings with other leaders in New York, whilst on Monday he is scheduled to have lunch with Jordan’s King Abdullah. During his stay in New York, the King will also participate in the reception offered by Clinton, who governed from 1993-2001, for the heads of state and government who are attending the Clinton Global Initiative before departing for Spain on Monday evening.

Missing Megan

A

S we go to press, there have been no reported sightings of 15-yearold schoolgirl Megan Stammers or her maths teacher Jeremy Forrest since they crossed into France and they could be anywhere in Europe, police have said. Detectives searching for the pair have stressed their primary concern is to bring the schoolgirl back unharmed.

Sussex Police Chief Inspector Jason Tingley, said: “Although they entered France, it is possible that they are anywhere now. Our objectives are to identify where they are or for them to contact us, so we can bring Megan home safely”. Jeremy Forrest’s father, Jim Forrest, told reporters his son was “a gentle and caring” man who was extremely vulnerable. “I am worried about Jeremy. I am not worried about Megan. I can tell you my son is one of the most gentle, caring people you will ever meet.

I worry for him more than Megan in case he flips”. The 15-year-old had a list of 50 life ambitions which has also been discovered online. The final item on her wish list - to “fall in love” - had been crossed out. Conflicting reports suggest police may have been aware of the pair’s relationship and that the pair’s mobile phones were seized before they fled. A Police spokesperson said: “The first time police were aware of any concerns about Megan and Mr Forrest was last week and we have been liaising with the school since then.

We do know that she has spoken about perhaps going somewhere.” There have been claims that 15-year-old Megan and the married maths teacher had been close for up to seven months. The pair had, allegedly, been seen holding hands by pupils during a flight from Los Angeles during a school trip in February and one of Megan’s friends said another classmate had

told school staff. The school’s head teacher, Terry Boatwright, said the school had been investigating the issue before the pair left the country. “The school, in conjunction with the local authority, Megan’s parents and the police, had been investigating those concerns when this happened,” he said. But Megan’s mother Danielle Wilson, 37, said she knew

13

nothing of the alleged affair until she ran off with Forrest. A European arrest warrant has been issued for Jeremy Forrest - the married teacher who fled to the Continent with 15-year-old pupil Megan Stammers. Anyone with information is asked to call Sussex Police on +44 1273 475 432 or text +44 7786 208 090.

Baby Shuttle Retires

T

HE Space shuttle E n d e avo u r, affectionately known as Baby Shuttle, has landed safely at Los Angeles airport after taking its final flight. The spacecraft was strapped to the back of a 747 jumbo jet at Edwards Air Force Base around 100-miles away, and taken on a five-hour aerial tour around California landmarks, including the Golden Gate Bridge, the Hollywood sign, and Disneyworld. At the Santa Monica Pier, spectators took the opportunity to take their last photos and some chanted “USA” as Endeavour swooped along the coast. “Even though it only lasted a few seconds, it was a unique experience to witness history,” said spectator Andrew Lerner.

Thousands of spectators lined the streets in Sacramento, cheering as Endeavour looped around the state Capitol building

twice. Traffic came to a standstill along a motorway near the Nasa Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and police used loud speakers to move on drivers. Matthew Montgomery, whose aunt was an engineer on the early Apollo missions, brought his twoyear-old son to see the shuttle’s final flight. “I was going to leave him in day care but thought this is a once-in-a-lifetime deal,” he said. Endeavour will travel by road on a special flatbed trailer in October to its final destination at the California Science Centre, where it will remain on show. The space shuttle has extensive links to California; the main engines were manufactured in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley, while the heat shield tiles that protected it during re-entry were invented in Silicon Valley. Endeavour replaced Challenger, which exploded during lift-off in 1986. Nasa lost a second shuttle, Columbia, in 2003 when it broke apart during re-entry. Fourteen astronauts died in the accident. Endeavour flew 25 times, mostly

to supply the International Space Station. It spent 299 days in space and circled Earth nearly 4,700 times, clocking up 123 million miles (198 million km). It is the second of only three remaining shuttles to go into retirement. In April, Discovery arrived at the Smithsonian Institution’s hangar in Virginia. Atlantis, which closed out the shuttle programme, will stay in Florida where it will be towed the short distance to the Kennedy Space Centre in the autumn.

Robbie Scuppers Paparrazzi R OBBIE Williams has beaten the paparazzi and given the world its first glimpse of his baby daughter, by posting a photograph of the child curled up asleep on his chest on Twitter. The brand new Dad looked exhausted as he posed with baby Theodora Rose in his arms. Williams became a father for the first time on Tuesday when wife Ayda Field gave birth to 7lb 4oz “Teddy”, in London. A caption on the picture told fans: “Daddy’s second nappy change ...

Teddy’s second day on the planet.” The couple have been besieged with congratulations since the child’s birth. Williams previously said he did not want to bring his daughter up in Los Angeles, where the couple currently live. “I don’t want to educate our baby in LA because I would much prefer her to have English sensibilities,” he said. “I want Teddy to have an English passport, we’re still figuring out exactly whereabouts the baby is going to be brought up. Williams and Field, a Turkish-American actress, have been together for five years and were married two years ago.

Andy Williams Dies at 84

EGENDARY crooner, Andy Williams, award-winning singer of Moon River and Can’t Take My Eyes off You, has died, aged 84, at home after a year fighting bladder cancer. He began singing with his brothers as a child in Iowa, and his easy style and mellow voice led former US president Ronald Reagan to call him “a national treasure”. In November 2011 Williams announced to an audience of fans that he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer. Speaking at the Moon River Theatre he founded in Branson, Missouri, he vowed to return to performing the following year, his 75th in show business. Williams had initially struggled as a solo act and was so broke at one point that he resorted to eating dog food. He became a major star the same year as Elvis Presley, 1956, with the Sinatra-like swing Canadian Sunset. Over the next few decades he achieved 18 gold records and three platinum ones, he was nominated for five Grammy awards and hosted the Grammy ceremonies several times. Movie songs became his speciality, from the Love Story theme and Days of Wine and

Roses, his most famous song, although it was never released as a single, was Moon River. Although it was covered by countless artists, Williams made the song his personal brand. In fact, he insisted on it. “When I hear anybody else sing it, it’s all I can to do stop myself from shouting at the television screen, ‘No! That’s my song!’” Williams wrote in his 2009 memoir, titled Moon River and Me. The Andy Williams Show, which lasted on television through the 1960s and into 1971, won three Emmys and featured Williams alternately performing his stable of hits and bantering casually with his guest stars. His unflappable manner on television and in concert was mirrored offstage. “I guess I’ve never really been aggressive, although almost everybody else in show business fights to get where they want to be,” he once said. “My trouble is, I’m not constructed temperamentally along those lines.” His wholesome image endured one jarring interlude. In 1976, his ex-wife, former Las Vegas showgirl Claudine Longet, shot and killed her lover, skiing champion Spider Sabich. Longet, who said it was an accident, spent only a week in jail. Williams stood by her. He escorted her to the courthouse and testified on her behalf.

Man Mauled After Train Jump fence surrounding the enclosure. The victim suffered bites and wounds on his arms, legs, shoulders and back, and also a broken arm and broken leg - possibly from the jump. He was taken to a nearby hospital in a critical condition. Mr Breheny said staff used a fire extinguisher to chase the tiger away, and told the man to roll under an electrified

wire to escape further attack. Zookeepers then managed to get the beast into a holding area where it usually sleeps. Mr Breheny said: “If not for the quick response by our staff and their ability to perform well in emergency situations, the outcome would have been very different.” He said the tiger, which has been at the zoo for three years, “did nothing wrong” and

“will not be euthanized”. The Bronx Zoo, one of America’s largest, covering over 265 acres and keeps hundreds of animals, many in habitats meant to resemble natural settings. The visitor train has open sides and travels over the Bronx River and through a forest, where it glides along the top edge of a fence, past elephants, deer and the tiger enclosure.

Lucky Escape

A 25-YEAR-OLD visitor to the Bronx Zoo in New York apparently jumped out of a train taking onlookers over several animal enclosures and fell into a tiger’s

den where he was savagely attacked. Officials said that the man was alone with an 11-year-old male tiger, weighing around 400lb, for about 10 minutes

in the Wild Asia enclosure before he was rescued. The zoo’s director, Jim Breheny, said that after jumping from the monorail, he fell 17ft over a perimeter

A LORRY driver was left hanging off a bridge in Southern Brazil following an accident. Aguinaldo da Silva was dangling for 25 minutes before passers-by were able to get a rope to him. He had crashed into a car when it stopped suddenly on the Chavantes Bridge which connects the states of Parana and Sao Paulo. Mr da Silva, who was driving the lorry without any cargo, was uninjured in the crash.

J.K.Rowling First Book for Adults JK Rowling’s first novel for adults has finally gone on sale, and is already breaking book sales records. Pre-sales of “The Casual Vacancy”, were the highest of any book this year, but little was known about its content which has been shrouded in secrecy up to its release. There have been mixed reviews as one critic said Rowling had retained her magic, another that the novel is “dull”. Many Rowling fans queued outside bookshops to be the first to get their hands on a copy. The novel is about a “snobby middle class” community driven by provincial politics and the fallout when a parish councillor dies in a West Country village. It has been reported that the

village she describes is based on Tutshill where Rowling was brought up as a child. Residents are reportedly unhappy about the description and it

is not their experience of the area. Local Carla Newton said people are keen to find out more. “I’ll definitely be reading it in case I can recognise

someone,” she said. Rowling has amassed a fortune estimated to be around £620m from her seven Harry Potter books and all the spin-off rights.

The author has revealed that her next novel is very likely to be another children’s book. The cover price of the book is £20.00 although

it is thought that most bookshops will reduce this to £10.00. It is also available as an EBook through Amazon for £12.00.

Fake Pilot’s Cockpit Ride

IT is “Catch Me If You Can” all over again. An unemployed man wore a pilot’s uniform to hitch a free ride in the cockpit of a commercial flight. The 32-year-old was stopped at Turin’s Caselle airport on suspicion of using false IDs, a cap and uniform to convince crew he was a qualified pilot. He had managed to fly for free inside the cockpit aboard a flight from Munich, Germany, to Turin. The two real pilots flew the Air Dolomiti, plane while the man, who has not been identified, did not touch the controls. Air Dolomiti is part of the German airline Lufthansa. The case is similar of that of Frank Abagnale, who pretended to be a pilot, and whose story was later made into the film, Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Italian police

had been tailing the man, who called himself Andrea Sirlo on his Facebook page, after receiving a tip-off. Detectives claimed the man stated on his profile that he was a commercial pilot who was promoted to captain’s rank while still young, and police became suspicious. Officers are investigating whether there were any other flights on which he may have pretended to be a pilot. Police spokesman Filippo Vanni said: “He’s so good that with his fake uniform, fake degrees and fake badge, he tricked a lot of people into believing he really was a pilot that even some crew members bought it. That’s how he got a ‘lift’ on the Turin-Munich flight in the cockpit, actually in the seat reserved for special guests, behind the co-pilot. He tried to create a new life for himself, where he could be accepted, gain friends and access a whole new social setting.” A police statement said “the

suspect was held on suspicion of putting the security of air transport at risk and usurping a title. On at least one occasion in 2012, pretending to be a pilot of a foreign commercial airline, and with a fake name, he succeeded in flying as the third pilot in the

cockpit,” the statement said. Air Dolomiti said “We know the case,” Lufthansa spokesman Christoph Meier declined to give any details, but said “that even crew are unable to fly aboard one of the carrier’s planes without having a ticket”, indicating that

the Italian might have had a passenger ticket. Italian police said “the suspect led them to a garage, where officers found piles of neatly pressed white shirts with epaulets, black trousers and jackets which were similar to pilots’ uniforms”.

This Week In Vivo WORLD NEWS

What an extraordinary week we have had this week. After “officially” getting married in Thailand earlier this year, Marc Craig and his wife Becky wanted to celebrate properly with their family and friends. The week started off with their joint Stag and Hen Do. The fancy dress theme was taken well and truly to the limit as you can see from our pictures. On Wednesday daytime, the couple invited some friends to watch their blessing whilst on board Freebird 1, a catamaran cruiser, which took them out to sea for the first part of the celebrations. They were extremely lucky with the weather as the threat of Tropical storm Nadine was present during the first part of the week. The wind had picked up during the cruise, which had to be cut short by an hour, but it just meant that all the guests got to Vivo early.

The venue was dressed in lengths of white tulle and silver ribbon and looked beautiful. The “Top Table” was set up on the stage so that guests could all see the couple, and they could see all of their guests. Becky and Marc wanted to go with a Thai theme, so bought elephant candle holders and Buddha statuettes with them; they also had orchids in huge round bowls to continue the theme. They also had a wishing well placed alongside the guest book, so guests could write their thoughts and wish the couple well. The meal started with either Stuffed Tomato filled with Tuna and rice, or Tomato soup, followed by slow roasted pork with diaphanous potatoes and fresh vegetables. Dessert was a slice of the beautiful wedding cake, made by Sugar Slice Ann. It consisted of 50 specially designed cupcakes, with Marc and Becky’s initials on them, and a further two tiers of cake, all served with a slice of Cornish ice cream. Pure heaven. The toasts were performed by The Best man, Marc and his brand new

father-in-law, even Becky had a word or two to say, like to so many other brides now breaking with tradition. After the “Serious” part of the wedding, guests went out onto the back terrace and took over the venue. Many of the couples friends are entertainers so it was a bit like a variety performance

show, albeit with a difference. All in all it was a beautiful way to celebrate the marriage of Marc and Becky, hardly a dry eye in the house, although that may have been due to the alcohol consumed. We would all like to wish Marc and Becky a very long and happy life together.

Servants - The True Story Of Life Below Stairs BBC 2 - 9:00 - 10:00 pm

A century ago, 1.5 million British people worked as servants – astonishingly, more than worked in factories or farms. But while servants are often portrayed as characters in period dramas, the real stories of Britain’s servants have largely been forgotten. Presented by social historian Dr Pamela Cox - herself the great-granddaughter of servants this three-part series uncovers the reality of servants’ lives from the Victorian era through to the Second World War.

In the first episode, Dr Cox begins in the grand houses of the Victorian ruling elite – large country estates dependant on an army of staff toiling away below stairs. The Victorians ushered in a new ideal of servitude - where loyal, selfless servants were depersonalized stereotypes with standardised uniforms, hairstyles and even generic names denoting position. In the immaculately preserved rooms of Erdigg in North Wales, portraits of servants like loyal housekeeper Mrs Webster hint at an affectionate relationship between family and servants.

Ian Hislop’s Stiff Upper Lip

BBC 2 - 9:00 - 10:00 pmThe programme features extraordinary In his new three-part series, Ian Hislop asks when and why we British have bottled up or let out our feelings, and how this has affected our history. Exploring emotion and identity over the last 300 years, Ian gives us his personal take on our evolving national character. In the opening episode, Ian reveals how and why the stiff upper lip emerged 200 years ago in a country that, until then, was surprisingly touchy-feely and often awash with sentiment.

characters, such as aspirational young Scot James Boswell, plagued with anxieties about showing his feelings in fashionable London, and Mary Wollstonecraft, who argued that women’s heads should rule their hearts, but failed to practise what she preached. This was a time of profound transition for Britain - and how it expressed its feelings - which Ian encapsulates with the tale of two very different national heroes: Admiral Nelson and the Duke of Wellington.

Mrs Biggs

ITV 1 - 9:00 - 10:30 pm Having used the Packer money to buy a new house for herself and the boys, Charmian misses Ron desperately. He is lonely too, barely scraping a living as a roofer in a dingy Rio suburb. Then, tragedy strikes when their eldest son, Nicky, is killed in a car crash. Charmian has to smuggle out a letter to Ron telling him of the terrible news. Charmian and Ron are broken by the death of Nicky, but each deals with it in a different MRS BIGGS 29 way. Charmian resolves to keep herself as busy as she can – maniacally so – by taking on a

degree as a mature student. Ron slides into a pit of drink, drugs and women. It is at this point he meets a beautiful young Brazilian dancer by the name of Raimund. But jaded by life, Ron decides to arrange one last payday then turn himself in. He meets up with a Daily Express journalist in Rio to sell him his life story. The journalist betrays Ron by tipping off the police and an old adversary, Detective Chief Inspector Jack Slipper, arrests Ron in Rio. He is thrown in prison in Brasilia, facing extradition, and without even the comfort of a cheque from the Express for Charmian and the boys.

The Boy Who Can’t Forget Channel 4 - 11:45 pm - 12:45 am Can you remember what you were doing on 15th March 2003? Or what the weather was like on 30th May 2007? Twenty-year-old British student Aurelien can. He is one of just a handful of people in the world who are baffling scientists with their ability to recall an incredible amount of their lives. Some claim they can remember every day as if it were yesterday. Now Aurelien is the first Briton to go public with this extraordinary talent. Is it an elaborate trick or some sort of obsessive compulsive behaviour or perhaps

the result of physical differences in their brains? Aurelien is put to the test by eight time world memory champion, Dominic O’Brien, and examined by memory expert Professor Giuliana Mazzoni. This remarkable documentary explores the recently discovered phenomenon known as superior autobiographical memory. It will look into the theories of scientists trying to unravel the mystery in the UK and US, and the lives of the seemingly ordinary people who appear to have an extraordinary power we had no idea humans could possess.

Having an Affair My Brother is a Thief and the rest of my family for the heartbreak that it’ll eventually cause, but I just can’t stop seeing him. Danni

I’m 17 and have a 1-year-old daughter. For the past 6 months I’ve been having an affair with my auntie’s fiancée. I really love him and he says that he loves me. I know this is so unfair on my auntie, my daughter

Unfair? That’s the understatement of the century to be fair. What you’re doing is wrong on every level and has the potential to tear your entire family apart. You need to stop and take a long hard look at yourself Danni. Is this really the sort of person you want to be? Don’t give me that “I just can’t stop” rubbish either – if you really mean to stop this then you can! Oh and don’t worry, I’m not forgetting your auntie’s fiancé he’s just as bad as you! Wake up and smell the coffee darling, you’re nothing but a bit on the side to this guy! The truth of the matter is that your auntie deserves better from the pair of you! Stop this now before it goes any further and go and find someone of your own!

My 20-year-old brother came to stay with me for the weekend recently. Since he left I noticed at least £10 missing from my purse. I don’t want to get him in trouble with my mum as he can get quite angry and defensive but I really can’t believe that my own flesh and blood would steal from me and I want to do something about it. Should I try to forget about it, or tell my mum? Ellie

Stealing is a very nasty habit that, if left unchecked, can just get progressively worse. In this instance, I’d suggest that you don’t go to your mum but instead you have a quiet word with your brother. Explain to him that you know full well he’s been in your purse and that you won’t tolerate it! With any luck, being found out will be the short sharp shock this young man needs to show him that there are consequences! He may just shrug it off or he may be very apologetic but either way he will think twice

A & E Nurse Eating Disorder

I have a really bad relationship with food. I hate my figure but it makes me so upset that I end up binge eating and putting on even more weight. Then when I can’t bear to look at myself in the mirror I go on a crash diet and hardly eat anything for weeks. Then the cycle starts all over again. It’s making me miserable but I can’t seem to break out of it. I need help. Laura

There are so many varying factors here Laura that it would be impossible for me to give you all the information you need in just a few lines. Obviously the way you perceive yourself needs to be addressed as does the binge eating. All I can tell you is that you’re

not alone and that there is help out there for you. The first thing you need to do is speak to your GP and explain everything in detail. From that point on, it’s a case of regulating your eating habits and working on building up your own self esteem. There are plenty of self help groups on the internet where you can read about others experiences and even discuss your own situation. Take a look at www.b-eat.co.uk for example. Download some of the information leaflets and get involved in their forums. You can overcome this sweetheart, you really can. The good news is that you seem to want to and that’s the key ingredient!

I was working as a nurse for ten years and love my job, as helping people is all I’ve ever wanted to do. Two months back, while working on A & E, I dealt with survivors of a horrific car crash and, due to their injuries, lost several of them in my care. Since that night I’ve been having nightmares at night and panic attacks at work. I’m not sure why the incident affected me so

before stealing from you again. Although it’s a sad thing to have to say, you need to take temptation out of his way in future! If this does happen again though, of course you’ll need to speak to your mum and see what she thinks should be done.

badly but I can’t concentrate at work and am worried I’m going to have to give it up. Denise

What you’re describing is a perfectly natural response to the experiences you had two months ago Denise. Speak to your manager and explain what’s been going on. Post traumatic stress, if left unchecked can overtake your entire life but the good news is that, with proper help, you can beat it. At the moment, in your mind, this whole thing is unstoppable, but it really isn’t. Counselling will help you to come to terms with what you saw and also help you to realise that you did everything humanly possible to save those people. Take positive action right now and get to work on overcoming this and I’m certain that you will be able to carry on in the career that you love. Good luck with this, you can and will get through it.

PUGH´S PANTRY By Barry Pugh

After watching a 4 part documentary on channel 4 about Gordon Ramsay working with prisoners to start a bakery business from Brixton prison to try and generate money to be put back into the economy and making the inmates work, I was impressed. I totally agree with him that they shouldn’t be just sat in cells watching the world go by with a TV and breakfast, lunch and dinner handed to them - but instead doing something creative and giving them a chance to have a profession when they get out of Prison, whilst putting some money back into the country for the cost they incur for committing their offences. His determination and hard work paid off, and the ‘BAD BOYS BAKERY’ was created, and this was their signature sticky sweet treat which is now being sold in a major coffee shop chain around London. I have to say, I tried this recipe and it was scrumptious, so I decided to share it with you all!

Lemon Treacle Slice Ingredients

For the base 300g digestive biscuits 150g butter For the topping 675g golden syrup 90g butter 100ml double cream 225g white breadcrumbs 5 egg yolks Zest and juice of 1 lemon 1 tbsp Lemon curd

For the glaze

50g icing sugar juice of 1 lemon juice

Gordon Behind Bars Method

To make the base, pre-heat the oven to 160oC, fan 140oC, gas mark 3. Place the biscuits in a food processor and blend until you have a smooth crumb. Melt the butter, and then stir into the biscuits. Press the biscuit mixture firmly into the base of a 20cm square tin which has been lined with baking parchment. Allow to chill for at least half an hour. To make the topping, put the golden syrup into a saucepan along with the butter and allow to melt gently without boiling. Once the butter has melted take the pan off the heat and stir in the cream, breadcrumbs, egg yolks, lemon zest and juice. Stir well.

Barbecue or Carbecue

Ever had to stop your car journey halfway because you’ve broken down? There’s nothing more annoying, unless of course you’re just checking to see if your pork tenderloin is done, the chicken wings are cooked or your sausages are sizzling! Engine cooking is a tradition going back almost as long as the car itself, and now that petrol and diesel prices are at an all-time high, it’s never made more sense to ask your engine to do more than just get you from point A to point B. Start your engines and get ready to Carbecue!

Once the base has cooled, spread the lemon curd onto the base. Pour over the breadcrumb filling and then place into the oven to cook for 25-30 minutes or until firm to the touch. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before cutting into rectangular slices. To glaze the slices, mix the icing sugar with enough lemon juice to make a thick paste. Place it into a piping bag and pipe onto the top of your bars, or drizzle the glaze over with a spoon. Have you made it? Created your own variation? Something you want to share? Let me know by email and I will add your comments next time.... editor@tenerife-weekly.com

HAPPY COOKING!

Plan your journey: Make a salad and get some crusty bread and butter to accompany your dish! If you have air conditioning in the car, you can use this to keep it chilled nicely! Marinate the meat of your choice, here are some examples: Minted lamb chops, BBQ chicken wings, Pork tenderloin in sage and onion Next get your chosen meat, spread with a little butter or olive oil (not motor oil) and wrap it carefully in foil. (Just like you would for the oven!) Then double wrap it again so no juices can trickle out as you’re driving along! Prepare your engine: Start the car and allow the engine to warm up. Pop the bonnet and eliminate where any plastic parts are! As a general rule, the best spot—if you can safely get to it— is on or near the exhaust manifold. But test by firstly flicking a bit of cold water onto the engine to see where the hottest parts are! Extreme caution is needed and be careful not to burn yourself!

Secure the food - try to make sure it won’t roll off when you get onto the motorway! Cooking / Driving times: • Sausages: 60-100 Km at 50km per hour • Lamb Chops: 60 Km at 65Km per hour • Chicken wings: 140-200 Km at 70Km per hour • Pork tenderloin: 250 Km at 80 Km per hour Remember: Modern engines are generally more efficient than older engines, for example, so they may require longer cooking times. The type of driving you’re doing can also alter the cooking mileage. If you’re stuck in traffic your 60-mile meal may be done after 10 miles. Be sure to wear oven mitts, as your car’s engine can get very, very hot! Don’t try to cook on your engine while it’s raining; it’s dangerous. In fact it’s dangerous full stop! Carbon Monoxide poisoning is lethal, you attempt this at your own risk, and I take no responsibility if it goes wrong for you or any damaged caused to your car!

SHARPLES IN SESSION By John Sharples

On The Road To Nowhere Work on the ringroad that will link the North of the Island to the south was moving at a terrific pace. Workers were going hell for leather 24 hours a day. The work was six months ahead of schedule and everyone was happy. Then! Money became scarce and other issues reared their ugly heads. It looks like the project has slowed down drastically and in some cases it has come

to a grinding halt. The plan is that, by the end of 2013, it will take only 30 minutes to get to the North from the South. I have a personal interest in this wonderful road as I travel from La Orotava to Las Americas

and back four nights a week and that extra time would be a gift made in heaven. So whoever it is that has their spanner in the works, pull it out mate and get those steamrollers moving again.

Living In The Cloudy North

That headline is enough to spark a riot amongst the people who live in the north of Tenerife. We are sick and tired of people who know nothing about Tenerife who tell people that it’s always cloudy up here. In fact it is quite the contrary. I didn’t come to live in Tenerife for the sun; I came for a new way of life. If anything, the sun gets right on my nerves and I would rather have a bit of everything than constant sunshine. This year however, has seen Puerto de la Cruz basking in solid sunshine. It hasn’t rained here since February and when it rained it was a bit of a let-down.

I work in the south and I see the weather on both sides of the Island on an almost daily basis. I have seen more cloudy days in Las Americas this year than I have in Puerto de la Cruz. So, dear readers, when you go into a travel agency in the UK and they tell you that the north is cloudy all the time, please put them right. Puerto de la Cruz is a beautiful holiday town, the Martianez Lake is a wonderful place to sunbathe and the cobbled shopping streets are a delight. Loro Parque is on our doorstep and there are bars and restaurants all over the town supplying every type of food from Romanian to MacDonald’s and Indian to Lebanese.

Easy Tiger

Did you see the story last week about the nutter in America who decided to jump from a raised train into a tiger’s den at the Bronx Zoo? He said he wanted to be at one with the tiger. It’s a good job that someone was around to rescue him or his wish would have been realised. If the tiger had been hungry he would have be more than at one with it, he would have been inside it! The man obviously has issues that need

addressing. He has supposedly been posting poems on facebook about being part of mother earth and leaving comments like “Be fearless and love”. There was talk of arresting him for trespass. I think maybe a man in a white coat might be more suitable. If I wanted to be at one with nature the nearest place I can think of is Loro Parque. Maybe I could sit in a parrot’s cage and sing the Birdie Song.

Something To Beef About

My lovely friend Margaret had her granddaughter Tracey over for a week or so. As with all good grandmothers, she looked after her well and made sure she didn’t go hungry. She roasted a joint of beef and made Tracey some sandwiches to eat on the plane. Tracey set off for the airport and once on-board the flight and settled in her seat she decided to eat her sandwiches. She took the parcel out of her bag and opened it up to find ........ A full joint of roast beef!!!! The sandwiches were wrapped up and still in Margaret’s fridge. She obviously got the two mixed up, but can you imagine the look on the

face of the person sat next to Tracey on the flight when she opened up her food parcel The photograph shows Margaret and her sister Cath. They are big fans of Bitter and Twisted and decided to join the show one night. I think they look better than we do!

I really dislike this show. I don’t see what all the fuss is about. I wish they would do a senior version of the show. There are so many people out

there who are talented but seem to be deemed too old for X Factor. As the population of the UK is actually older rather than younger, I bet it would be a winner in the ratings and we wouldn’t have to listen to all this idiotic warbling that they do these days.

By Marc Craig

“We’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

this gem, check it out-I won’t spoil it for you! “Point Break” is quite simply one of the coolest movies ever, bank-robbing surfers and the role of a lifetime for the late, great Patrick Swayze as Bodhi, the gangs’ enigmatic leader. You’ll be reaching for your surfboard, just don’t rob any banks!!! “The Shawshank Redemption”, strangely yet another movie based on a Stephen King tale, for a man primarily known for horror, he has been the source material for some of cinemas most uplifting movies!! Lastly, the movie that stopped a generation of film fans from swimming in the sea and the 1st true summer blockbuster, “Jaws”, next time you’re swimming off Las Vistas beach and you’ve swam out a bit too deep, try not to think of that ominous 2-note theme music!! Last week’s quote came from Julia Roberts in “Notting Hill”.

It’s official, last Friday, September 21st, was the last day of summer, 2012 (even though it’s hard to tell over here in sunny Tenerife), so I thought I’d celebrate the passing of the season with a look at some of the best summer movies of all time!! Researching this article, I came across many blockbuster releases from every decade but they were just movies that were released in midsummer of a particular year. What I wanted was a movie that epitomised summer itself. I narrowed it down to 4; I hope you will share with me your favourites!! “Stand by me” is a classic. Based on a Stephen King short story (The Body), it’s the tale of a group of kids in small town America who share an experience that changes their lives and takes their innocence forever, if you’ve never seen

The 5 Year Engagement She’s the one!!

In Gran Sur Multicine in English this week, “The 5 Year Engagement” starring Jason Segal (“How I Met Your Mother”, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) and Emily Blunt (“The Devil Wears Prada”, “The Wolfman”). The stars play an engaged couple who can never seem to set a wedding date due to a seemingly never-ending series of problems including frostbitten toes, work opportunities and the temptation to get romantically involved with various work colleagues. The screenplay was written by Segal and director Nicholas Stoller. The romantic comedy was released in

the UK back in April to generally good reviews with much credit given to the great chemistry between the two leads, probably because they’re good friends in real life (Blunt is married to Segal’s best friend the U.S “The Office” star John Krasinski. Sounds like a great way to pass a couple of hours!!

The Five Year Engagement Showing daily at 15:30 hr - 124 min Comedy | Romance - Rated R Starring Jason Segel - Tom Solomon Emily Blunt - Violet Barnes Chris Pratt - Alex Eilhauer Alison Brie - Suzie Barnes-Eilhauer

I’ve never been one to namedrop but in the late 80’s when I shared a caravan in Scarborough with Robbie Williams, we often talked about what it would be like to someday become fathers...... we didn’t really talk about fatherhood but I couldn’t miss the opportunity not only to mention that I lived with the Robster, but to also bring up fatherhood!! So the Rock Dj’s a daddy!! On 18th September at 3.33pm, wife Ayda gave

birth to Theodora Rose Williams. Robbie tweeted “Baby, mummy and daddy are all rockin” and was tweeted back by “Take That” bandmate Gary Barlow who tragically lost baby Poppy at full term last month. Gary was full of joy for his long term pal however, Sending flowers, a card and leaving a tweet saying “ massive congrats to Rob and Ayda, so happy for you”. I thought about tweeting my old mate Rob, thing is I’ve still got his tennis racket and he loved that racket so much!!!

Tenerife Weekly Pool Superleague www.tenerifepoolleague.com

Victor, Pedro and Val - they only go for the food LOL Another great week in the Superleague was marred by Bungalow winning his 16th straight game, it´s unbelievable that someone can be so lucky. Come on boys, someone have him. (All tongue in cheek of course, it´s brilliant), and what´s happened at Lupain, not a single point then two wins on the trot, well done lads. Lupain 6 V 4 Atlantis Crew Captain Mike started with good win over Josh, the first 4 games shared. Pairs were won by Josh & Liam after Victor potted the black too soon in the game, Paul & Garry beat Mike & Francis with just the black ball remaining, Mike had a straight forward shot, the ref called a foul for a double hit on the cue ball, game lost. Atlantis Crew 4 - 2 up, the final 4 singles were won by Lupain with an exceptional game from Eddie with an amazing cut on the black ball to win game 8, Frank & Suresh winning the final 2 games for well-earned victory two in a row now. Bar Tasca A 7 V 3 Treasure Island The game was a lot closer than the score line suggests. Bungalow got Tasca of to a winning start against Mackie. Steve levelled it for visitors against Grandad, Alex then putting the hosts in front again. Stevie next on and produced the clearance of the night with Ian only

visiting the table once and all square going into the doubles. Then Tasca got their noses back in front by winning both games. Mackie got the better of Steve kettle to make it 4/3 to the hosts. Then Jamie, Grandad, and Bungalow won their last games. Bungalow making it his 16th win as in many games. Jake from Treasure Island says to watch out for the loose dogs snapping at the visitors ankles whilst they´re taking their shots! (So that´s the Tasca tactics ?..............) Bar180 B 4 V 6 Trap Door The resolute welsh boys came out on top after what looked like a near white wash but the home side restored a bit of pride winning the last 3 frames. Chipeque 2 V 8 Bar 180 After Glyn and Danny Irish suffered with unfortunate black finishes the San Blas boys showed their vintage to take the last 7 frames and consolidate their top position. Barracuda Bandits 9 V 1 Britannia Inn It was a great game with our near neighbours and as you would expect with good friends there was plenty of lively banter. Not being one to gloat, we stuffed em. No thrashed em, and will do the same again next time. Love you boys, it’s a shame for you that I edit the comment and you won’t be able to get your own back. Vivo 7 V 3 Frosties Vivo stalwarts Victor and Pedro opened the match with their usual solid performances, however Frosties digging in with Greer and Wayne clawing the points back to evens going into the doubles. After some serious safety play, Vivo took both doubles, and then three from the last four frames for a good win. Man of the match again for Vivo was Valeri with two good clearances, and Wayne for Frosties for head injuries sustained.( OK that was actually for an attempted cat rescue resulting in

falling from a balcony, but nevertheless deserves a mention !) Atlantis Sharks 9 v 1 Grandee O´Donnells Could have been 10 - 0 but for Paul Dwire potting both black and white in the final frame. Get the Guinness in Boys !

Stacey Keating Away Draw Spanish Ladies Keeps CD Open Champion Tenerife Top

There was a dramatic climax as Stacey Keating of Australia defeated Caroline Masson of Germany in an 18th hole play off decider after the final round saw them tied at 9 under par. Masson went into the final day with a one shot lead but the pair were almost inseparable as a battle went on behind them for third spot at Golf Las Americas. The French pair of Joanna Klatten and Celine Palomar, and Australia´s Nikki Garrett set out with the third spot in their sights but England´s Trish Johnson of Bristol staged a late rally to clinch it on 8 under. As Trish sipped a cold drink the leading pair went back to the 18th tee to find a winner. Stacey Keating was the sharper with a decisive

The good news is that CD Tenerife are still unbeaten after a 1-1 draw at Leganes on Sunday but bad habits are creeping back in and they ended up with 10 men after left back Llorente was sent off.

second shot onto the green and hit a birdie putt to take the prize. The trophy and the 52,500 euro cheque headed down under but the glory and a climb up the Ladies European Tour order of merit were also big rewards for the popular winner.

down 85-77 away and 80-85 at home in the second leg in front of 4,700 fans in La Laguna. The real action starts this Sunday away to Asefa Estudiantes and their home fans will welcome them back on Sunday 6 October for a 7 pm game against Zaragoza.

on the hand, the ref gave a penalty that Martinez took perfectly. Angry Llorente was booked for arguing with the ref when he pointed to the spot, after the kick was converted he gave the man in black some more personal career guidance and got his marching orders. A few minutes later Tenerife had a penalty claim, this time a Leganes defender brought the ball under control as he handled but the ref didn’t want to know. A late Martinez shot hit the crossbar but the 10 man visitors hung on and still have a one point lead at the top. On Sunday lowly Zamora visit Santa Cruz for a noon kick off, a good chance to extend the run of home wins.

Spirited CD Marino Hit Rock Bottom

back from a 2-0 deficit they went down 2-3 at home to Sporting B. Visiting striker Guerrero did the damage with a 21st minute goal and another just after half time to threaten a walkover. Marino fought back, Noah pulled one back with a penalty and despite losing Balduino with two bookings, Marchena drew them level after 66 minutes. The extra player proved decisive for Sporting, Perez netted the winner after 81 minutes to consign Marino to bottom place with just one point. The official crowd was just 150, the reality of promotion is turning into a nightmare and Real Oviedo away on Sunday is another game to dread.

There are signs of improvement from CD Marino but despite the Las Americas side clawing their way

Basketball Fans Ready To Roar For CB Canarias

Even a pre season derby defeat can’t dampen the enthusiasm of CB Canarias ahead of their new season in the Spain’s ACB basketball league. The newly promoted side lost out to neighbours Gran Canaria in the Toyota Cup going

Referees in the Segunda B division are petty and inconsistent, but this second successive red card came with six other bookings, 19 in just five games – a worrying trend. CD Tenerife were sitting pretty after Luismi Loro grabbed a first half lead, Aridane went wide of two defenders and squared the ball across for Loro to net his third strike of the season. Leganes are one of the better sides in the division and Carlos Martinez was always a danger. Tenerife could have increased their lead when Yeray hit the post after 64 minutes before the game ended in frustration. Leganes played the ball into the Tenerife penalty area and it caught Yeray

Off court the signs are encouraging, so far 2,500 season tickets have been sold and the club is confident that will rise to 3,000 by the Zaragoza home opener. The squad looks strong with latest recruit Blagota Sekulic of Montenegro expected to sharpen their attacking threat.

ASTRO-BARILINA’S TWISTED HOROSCOPES Aquarius 20 January - 18 February

Romance is in the air, just over the north of France. If you don’t happen to be near the north of France then chances are you’re going to strike out again throughout this week. However, wind directions can vary as much as the accuracy of these horoscopes, so don’t panic yet!

Gemini 21 May - 21 June

Mishaps will come in the shape of a toad, whilst salvation will come in the shape of a large truck. There’s a future in toad-jam, by the way, if you’re at all interested. It tastes lousy but makes a really good insect repellent.

Cancer 22 June - 22 July

Pisces 19 February - 20 March

You might find that you are requiring a move of the left-hand and right-hand side speakers or earphones you use to listen to music. Test yourself, let go of your fears and grasp the nettle with both hands. Just because people laugh at you doesn’t make you a comedian.

Aries 21 March - 19 April

Ten people will confess a manic love for you this week. And to think, one in twelve people that read this horoscope will find the same to be true.

Taurus 20 April - 20 May

Falling in love is an absolute blessing and will fill your life with sugar plums, fairies and pretty flowers. Curvy, gorgeous, lascivious... For you they will be associated with nothing.

and find love.

Filling the gap in your love life can be done with pies, tarts and loaves of unleavened bread. However, it generally is much easier to actually not eat all that stuff and go out

Leo 23 July - 22 August

Scientists will help you today by informing you that you can catch love in jars and spread love. This will cause your heart to leap and you’ll immediately feel like you want to grab the nearest person and slurp their face off. Football hasn’t been known, historically, for bringing people together.

Virgo 23 August - 22 September

The best way to undo your mistakes is to stand up, take a good look around, and then shout “Sorry chaps! This week has been one almighty cock-up and I’m very much to blame. Love is like a sea full of sea turtles. Or at least, it should be.

Libra 23 September - 23 October Every time you have a weird day you wonder whether there’s someone out there controlling your destiny. Is it possible for this kind of thing to happen by chance? You wonder. This week is going to be one of those weeks. Scorpio 24 October - 21 November It may seem like an extraordinary opportunity to get even with the world, but the world may have different ideas. A hairy back may trouble you this week, especially if it’s not your hairy back that’s in question. Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December Pillows are a special addition to a couch or settee for a romantic evening - ensure the pillows don’t have Mr T’s face on them, or your pets’ hairs. Whilst you could have a case arguing that the two can be attractive, unless you’re willing to put on Rocky III as a demonstration, I’d try to avoid it. Capricorn 22 December - 19 January Terrible news is headed your way - the best way to save your sanity is by implicating as many people as possible in your demise. By agreeing to read this horoscope you may be bringing on yourself several levels of suffering and/or pleasure.
