he family of missing 5-yearold April Jones yesterday launched a pink ribbon campaign. People are being urged to fix a pink ribbon to their front doors or gates, or to a wear a pink ribbon, as the hunt for the

youngster intensified. Godmother Mair Raftree said pink was April’s favourite colour.

April’s sister, Jasmine aged 16, has made an emotional appeal for her safe return, saying: “I just want our beautiful princess home

now. It’s been too long.” She spoke to reporters as the massive police hunt for the five-year-old girl continued. She added: “Knowing someone knows something but won’t say it makes me feel even worse.” It has also been revealed

that April’s father Paul has a degenerative eye disease and is unable to take part in the searches.

He’s spending time at home - he feels the need to be there for when April comes back.

When I first started editing the Tenerife Weekly, I said that I would be making changes to the paper to make it a stronger product for you, the reader.

This week you will see that the T.V Guide has been moved, this has enabled me to add 10 more pages of news, making it a far more substantial read.

As part of papers progression, I wanted to be able to cover a weeks’ worth of international and local news, not just snippets over the past few days, I think

April vanished near her home in the Bryn Y Gog estate in Machynlleth, mid Wales, at around 7pm on Monday whilst playing with friends. It has since emerged that April has cerebral palsy and Irritable Bowel Syndrome and will desperately need her medication.

Ms Raftree, 41, said: “She needs medication for her health problems and without it she will be in pain. She has been in hospital a few times for her condition and with the cerebral palsy her legs just give way. I am so scared for her and I desperately want her home.” Ms Raftree, a child-minder from Aberystwyth, said April has also spent time in hospital because of her irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

The little girl needs to take a regular doses of painkillers for the stomach disorder. She also said that April’s mother, Coral Jones, was doing her best to cope under the circumstances.

During a Press conference on Wednesday Coral, who was accompanied by her

stepfather Dai Smith, sobbed as she said: “It’s been 36 hours since April was taken from us. There must be someone out there who knows where she is and can help the police find her. We are desperate for any news. April is only five years old. Please, please, help find her.” After her plea, she broke down in tears, holding her head in her hands.

However, a person living on the Bryn-yGog estate who asked not to be named said: “I know he has at least four children but I’m fairly certain he has two, perhaps three others.” Neighbours claimed Mr Bridger has two young daughters who are said to have regularly played with April. He has lived at a number of addresses in Machynlleth and lived on Bryn-y-Gog until his recent move to a rented cottage in nearby Ceinws, a village of just 80 people.

Police have been given until 5pm today to question Bridger; Detective Superintendent Reg Bevan said police were trying to “piece together” Mr Bridger’s movements around the time the five-year-old disappeared. He said the 46-year-old would continue to be interviewed: “The investigation continues and our focus remains on finding April.

Locals have been urged to search empty holiday homes and outbuildings to see if April has been trapped, they have admitted that they are still trying to build up a picture of what exactly happened to April.

Suspect

Mark Bridger, 46, was arrested by officers on Tuesday and has been interviewed on at least two occasions, police have been granted more time to question the main suspect. He was picked up by officers whilst on foot - with police later confirming he was wearing camouflage-style clothing. His blue L Reg Land Rover had been retrieved from a repair garage in Machynlleth. Police are appealing for anyone who saw the former soldier or his car, registration number L503 MEP, to come forward.

A television crew may have unwittingly filmed the main suspect walking along the riverbank close to where he was later arrested. The footage, on Channel 4 news, showed a man matching the description of Mark Bridger walking along the River Dyfi shortly before he was arrested nearby.

According to one report the man pictured may have asked searchers along the river bank if they had any news about the missing five-year-old. Police are reviewing the footage for any clues.

Bridger has been described by locals as “a bit of a ladies’ man” who has fathered a number of children with different women and is thought to have worked as a welder, mechanic and hotel porter. One local, Glen Lewis, 50, said Mr Bridger had also harvested trees on forestry land close to Machynlleth and has a good knowledge of rural trails. He said: “I know him well enough to wave to. I’ve always thought of him as a bit of a ladies’ man.” Mr Bridger is believed to have fathered at least four children with two different partners. His children include

Someone who bought their ticket in the Barcelona town of Mollet del Valles has earned one hundred million euros in the EuroMillions draw on Friday for matching all five numbers plus the two Lucky Star numbers. There were also an additional five winning tickets worth just over 163,000 Euros each. These lucky winners bought their tickets in Gijón, Alcoy (Alicante), Ceuta and two in Barcelona.

The Guardia Civil in La Palma have arrested a 22-year-old man for causing damage to his mother’s property. The woman had refused to lend her son 100 Euros that he had demanded and in retaliation he proceeded to smash up the family home, where he no longer lived, and the family car, causing over 1,000 Euros worth of damage.

The tension is palpable in the municipality of Arona. There has been heated exchange of accusations between the government and the opposition. The mayor, Jose Alberto Gonzalez Reveron, ordered an investigation to find out whether Councillors Jose Antonio Reveron, Citizens for Arona, José Julián and Mena, the Socialist Party, had used funds supposed to be for political parties, for other purposes.

Vodafone Spain will soon launch a low-cost MVNO in Spain. The MVNO will be targeted at the young customer market. The MVNO will provide its services using the Vodafone mobile network, and is expected to operate under the VFN or Vodafone Young brand name, The Spanish Government announced the creation of a new tax on lottery prizes, which were previously exempt from taxation; this has extended the wealth tax and eliminated corporate tax deductions. The news was announced by the Finance Minister Cristobal Montoro, in a press conference after a meeting of Ministers. The new tax on lottery prizes, which will affect prizes that exceed 2,500 euros, will provide 824 million to state coffers.

A 63-year-old Russian holidaymaker, died shortly after arriving at Hospitén Sur despite initially being resuscitated at the beach after a near drowning at Playa Fañabé. Emergency services were called out with reports that the man had been pulled from the water by a fellow bather and was unconscious on the beach. Paramedics had managed to bring him back to life and transferred him to hospital.

Four new projects have been announced to improve tourist areas of the island, which will require an investment of more than 7.8 million euros. The work was agreed during the last meeting of the Regeneration convention. The Island’s Councillor for Tourism, Carlos Alonso, explains that “We are committed to giving priority to coastal areas and tourist towns”. Projects that have been approved include improving the entrance to Playa de la Arena between Calle La Alpispa and Punta Negra (Santiago del Teide), Chayofe Boulevard in Los Cristianos (Arona), rejuvenation of the waterfront in Puerto Colón (Adeje) and Agatha Christie viewpoints and the La Paz area (Puerto de la Cruz).

ThE current economic crisis has forced tobacco company Philip Morris to lower the price of the packets of Marlboro and L & M in the Canaries from next October 2. The price drop is likely to be in the region of about 20%.

Russell Tovey Plays with Bitter & Twisted

When the stars come out to play in Tenerife, they come to Vivo Decades. We were lucky enough to play host to Gillian Taylforth back in August and now adding to our celebrity guests we had Russell Tovey pay us a visit.

Tovey, aged 30, is well known for his roles in Dr. Who and Being Human, and has numerous other television, stage and film credits to his name, he came along to the Decades Spectacular on Thursday night with his family who, incidentally, live in Golf del Sur. Bitter & Twisted were delighted when he agreed to a spontaneous photo shoot and teased him mercilessly throughout the show.

After the show Tovey said: “I love, love, love it. I cannot believe the high standards that Bitter & Twisted kept up throughout the whole show. I am so pleased that I came along. My family had visited the show before and said it was good, but this has been even better than I thought it would be”.

Tovey is taking a break in Tenerife while he waits to see if the BBC comes up with a spin off to the Being Human series for his werewolf character. Tovey quit the show earlier this year after his character; George Sands was killed off in the first episode of the 4th series.

The Cabildo de Tenerife, together with the Island Foundation for Training, Employment and Development Business (Fifede), will be holding their Gala of Excellence Awards Tenerife 2.0, which will be held next Friday in the Auditorium Infanta Leonor, in Los Cristianos, and broadcast live

Adult Only hotels

S

EVERAL hotels on the island are committed to offering its customers the opportunity to enjoy their holiday in a child free zone. The crisis has hit the industry hard and any idea that can revive their business is a welcome one at the moment. This is the philosophy behind the Archipelago hoteliers, who are willing to try various experiments that allow them to try different

markets without losing money. The adult only hotels offer peace and quiet in relaxed, elegant surroundings and, above all, are children free.

This does not mean we will “not, not let them in,” says Nieves Damas, director of H10 Gran Tinerfe, Tenerife one of the establishments that have decided to adopt this proposal.

“What happens is that we do not recommend that families come because we have no activity for kids and all the rooms are for two people,” he says.

Damas was the director of H10 Big Sur three years ago, when it

became the first hotel chain to try the formula. To do this, they turned what had previously been the children’s pool into a Jacuzzi and remodelled the rooms for only two people at most. The experience has been a success.

“Feedback from our customers always refer to this as an oasis, a paradise, the absence of children is very noticeable by buffet or pool, it is a whole lot quieter,” he says.

It seems that the concept works. The director of Sunprime Coral Suites & Spa, Surya Pereyra, says that the hotel joined the scheme in 2009 and underwent comprehensive refurbishment, “not only in the common areas,

The date for the end of complaints is October 8th, locals who are not in favour of the project, promoted by the Cabildo of Tenerife, have begun a petition, collecting signatures in the local area.

There are a number of reasons for not wanting the train to run anywhere near Santa Ursula, amongst them, the damage it would cause to a seventeenth century house, a chapel

and other places of importance that belonged to Thomas de Nava and Grimón and is part of the historic heritage of the area.

For these reasons, the locals are requesting that the Northern railway line passes through Sta. Ursula via a tunnel and that the closest stop be in La Victoria de Acentejo. There are also concerns about the amount of noise the train will generate and that the proposed infrastructure is not justified in the current economic climate.

Iberostar says that rest periods are becoming shorter in a society in which so-called “quality time” has become a luxury. So they have opted for “diversifying supply to offer products and services that add value to the time of relaxation and enjoyment for their customers.” Its strategy is aimed at increasing specialisation “Because each client has different needs and we need to meet them all, offering products and services tailored to those needs, as is the case for adults’ only hotels”.

Such hotels promote “a fine menu of services and amenities designed and adapted to the needs of all those seeking a special vacation.” The adult only rooms have a range of themed packages called Senses Room Packs that include bottles of champagne, baskets of strawberries or cherries, massage oil, aromatic chocolates and mini bars.

Scally Waggs Fuel Tax To Dinner Increase

The Scally Waggs were formed over 10 years ago; they are a group of chaps who play golf on Sunday mornings at Adeje Golf Course. They also play at Los Palos every 2nd Sunday for charity and all the money raised goes to The Lions Club. They are planning a 2 day competition in May 2013, and all monies raised will again be donated to Lions Club charities.

They held their The Scally Waggs Presentation Dinner at Caths Corner in Costa Del Silencio on 28th September.

25 members, alongside friends and family and had a fantastic evening, the food and service were superb, they wished to thank Cath, Don and Jenny for hosting the event.

Drivers in Tenerife are in for a shock today after the Cabildo invoked a legislative decree allowing them to impose a levy on fuel.

The decree came into force as far back as July 1994 and allows each insular administration to set its own rate, allowing for up to two cents a litre increase in tax on both petrol and diesel.

Not surprisingly, perhaps, the Tenerife Cabildo has imposed the maximum level allowed, adding two cents to a litre of fuel from midnight on Wednesday.

said he was shocked at the unexpected rise saying that while the increase will hurt all motorists, his members, already suffering as a result of the economic downturn, would

be particularly hit.

A spokesman for the Cabildo said the proceeds from the increase would be spent on the repair and conservation of the island’s road network.

Miss north Tenerife 2012 TWEnTY candidates for Miss norte 2012 were presented at the new Parrot show at Loro Parque as part of the parks 40th anniversary celebrations.

The ceremony took place in the Arab Palace with the Councillor for festivals of the Town Hall of Santa Ursula, Alejandro Alonso and the director of the contest, Sandro Pergola Gonzalez. After the press conference, guests and contestants enjoyed the newly renovated parrots show.

The 20 candidates took advantage of the sunny day to have pictures taken with colourful macaws and Cockatoos; they then enjoyed a day of leisure, before taking part in

Take Me Out Films In Tenerife ThE Treehouse Bar and Grill in Chayofa was the latest venue for spotting celebrities.

Many residents will know that we live on the Isle of Fernando. Well we do when it comes to ITV ‘S Take Me Out, the provocative, cheeky and electrifyingly funny dating show. After a brief interval when they filmed the dates in Cyprus, this year saw the return to their favourite Island, Tenerife.

The Treehouse was used to film the debrief of the dates with the boys chatting about what had happened on their individual dates and what they thought of the girls they had chosen. During the

3-4 hours of filming the boys had the locals in tears with their antics. Owner Simon said “They were outrageous, they made all the old dears who had turned up to watch cry with laughter, literally! They were here for a few hours, so we fed them and made

sure their alcohol levels were topped up and the results were hysterical”.

Some of the dates had been filmed previously and featured other local haunts such as Tibu and The Regency, so it looks as though Tenerife gets the lighty!!!!

Carnaval 2013

ThE dates have now been released for the 2013 Carnaval. The Bollywood themed fiesta will run from 6th to the 17th February 2013.

Spanish Floods Kill 10 Tornado Ten people have been killed and hundreds more evacuated from their homes after flash floods swept devastated parts of southern Spain.

After months of drought, torrential rain flooded streets and homes, demolished a motorway bridge, and swept cars down roads that have been turned into rivers.

The hardest hit areas were the Mediterranean provinces of Malaga in the south and Murcia and Almeria in the southeast.

Regional officials said eight people died and at least 600 people were evacuated from their homes.

Among the dead are a young boy and a girl who were found drowned in a car in the south eastern town of Puerto Lumbreras.

The body of a woman was discovered in the town of Lorca, which was badly damaged by an earthquake last year. The body of a

A tornado swept through a fair ground in the main square of Gandia in Valencia, in eastern Spain, last Friday night, knocking down a Ferris wheel and injuring 35 workers.

Some 15 of the injured were seriously hurt. The storm damaged several rides and cut electricity to the site, which was closed at the time.

British woman who was also reported missing was named Diana Dudas from the town of Vera, Almeria.

The 52-year-old had a Spanish husband, Javier, and had lived in Spain for several years. She had her own holistic therapy clinic and hairdressers in the town and had just written a book.

A regional government spokesman said: “In Malaga province, there are 800 staff working to return things to normal as quickly

as possible. The rains are decreasing and seem to be shifting towards Granada and Almeri.”

Up to 245 litres (65 gallons) of water per square metre (11 square feet) fell on Friday morning alone, Spain’s weather agency reported. A flight headed for Malaga was diverted to Seville because of the extreme weather conditions.

At least two motorways have been closed and some

public transport disrupted.

The flooding comes after months of very dry weather and soaring summer temperatures all over Spain that triggered thousands of wildfires.

Almeria was among the hardest hit provinces in the south-east. Forecasters say the heavy rain is moving east and will eventually head northwards toward Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

La Tomatina Charges T O U R I S T S from as far away as Australia and India might have to pay next year to throw tomatoes at each other at Spain’s famous La Tomatina festival.

The Spanish town of Bunol, where the streets are filled with red sludge at the annual bash is contemplating charging an entry fee of 5 euros to limit attendance and improve safety, a town official said on Thursday.

The August festival attracts up to 50,000 revellers in minimal

clothing who pelt each other with tomatoes, but local authorities would like to cut the number to half by charging visitors.

Town councillor Rafael Perez denied the plan to charge visitors to throw tomatoes at one other has to do with Spain’s deep economic crisis, even though the cashstrapped regional Valencia government owes Bunol 3 million euros.

“This idea came up for security reasons. It’s a miracle we haven’t had any serious accidents,” Perez told Reuters. “If it was just about money we would charge more. This is one of the most popular festivals in Spain and we don’t get any aid, it’s all on us,” Perez said. Bunol’s total annual budget is 7.5 million euros.

The town councillor said private tour operators make money selling travel packages of up to 300 euros to take people to the festival, without paying any fees

to the town.

The enormous food fight began accidentally in 1945, when a group of young men were excluded from summer celebrations and protested by throwing

tomatoes from a street stall.

is expected to target foreign investors to help lower the country’s financial debt.

The SPDA suggests that real estate activity will make the transfer of funds to the country more straightforward.

The association also says that it will be easier for property investors to receive entry visas. Both the organisations are aiming to attract foreign investment and their prime targets are China, Russia and the UK. Russia is looked upon as a market

Ancient Fortress Found

Spanish archaeologists have discovered an impressive structure with 4,200-year-old outer walls and six pyramid-shaped towers, representing the most architecturally advanced Bronze Age fortress. Called La Bastida, the Spanish fortification system stood in the sierras of Totana, in the south eastern Murcia region. It was built with large stones and lime mortar and consisted of 10-foot-thick walls that were once 22 feet high. So far the archaeologists, led by Vicente Lull, professor of prehistory of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, have unearthed six towers along a length of 230 feet, although the full perimeter of the fortification measured about 1,000 feet.

The entrance to the enclosure consisted of a passageway built with strong walls and large doors at the end, held shut with thick wooden beams. One of the most relevant elements of the discovery was the secondary door, located near the main entrance. The door’s arch is in very good condition and is the first of its kind to be found in prehistoric Europe.

“Some of the fortifica-

tion traits, such as the massive towers and the secondary door, could be found in some places of the Eastern Mediterranean slightly before 2200 B.C. This might show unexpected political relations between distant regions,” said Rafael Micó, professor of prehistory at the Autonomous University of Barcelona and a member of the “La Bastida Project” direction team. Protecting a city located on top of a

hill and extending over 10 acres, the fortress was designed by people experienced in fighting methods unknown in the West at those times.

The model is typical of ancient Mediterranean civilizations, including the second city of Troy in Turkey, and the urban world of the Middle East (Palestine, Israel and Jordan). “It was not until some 400 to 800 years later that civilizations like the Hittites

Spanish Magazine in Cartoon Row

Spanish political satire magazine El Jueves has published a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad on its cover, even though recent violent protests rocked the Muslim world over a U.S. film and French caricatures deemed insulting to Islam.

El Jueves’ latest edition, which hit Spanish newsstands on Wednesday, shows several Muslims in a police lineup under the title “But… does anyone know what Mohammad looks like?” Any depiction of the prophet is

considered blasphemous by Muslims but the issue has also caused a debate in the West about censorship and freedom of speech.

The magazine declined to comment on the motives for the publication, but said it was a decision to take a humorous position on a contentious issue. “If you can’t depict Mohammad, how do you know it is him in the cartoons?”

Last week, French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo published cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad soon after protests against a film made in the United States

provoked a torrent of antiAmerican unrest in Egypt, Libya and other countries.

The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in one of the first protests, on September 11, and 15 people were killed in protests in Pakistan last Friday.

The Spanish Embassy sent a message to its citizens in Egypt asking for caution in the event of any backlash from the El Jueves cartoon but has not said whether it will step up security in other Arab countries. “We’re still analysing what steps to take,” a foreign ministry source said.

All this indicates that La Bastida “was probably the most powerful city of Europe during the Bronze Age,” the researchers said.

Previous excavations had already revealed the existence of a pool capable of storing over 100,000 gallons, and large houses and public buildings which were alternated with smaller constructions, all separated by entries, passageways and squares. “Our findings show a military, political and social rupture: the establishment of a violent and classist ruling society, which lasted seven centuries and conditioned the development of other communities living in the Iberian Peninsula,” Micó said.

La Bastida will be fully excavated with the aim of transforming it into an open archaeological park that will include a monographic museum and a research and documentation centre.

hopkins Wins Classical Brit Award OSCAR-WInnER Sir Anthony hopkins added a Classic Brit Award to his list of trophies after a composition by the actor featured on the album of the year.

The Silence of The Lambs star attended the ceremony with violinist Andre Rieu, who recorded the work as the title track of his album And The Waltz Goes On. The actor was a surprise addition to the red carpet after composing a waltz especially for Rieu. Sir Anthony has been a lifelong lover of classical music. he said: “I’ve been writing and tinkering for years. In 1964 I had the choice between acting and music and it was Richard Burton who told me to act.”

Rieu - known as the king of the waltz - collected the top album prize for the second year running, after triumphing in a public vote. Sir Anthony said of his inclusion on the album: “It’s a dream come true for me.

I’d always admired Andre. he’s a superb musician, a terrific showman and a wonderful violinist.”

Gareth Malone and The Military Wives picked up the first ever Classic Brits single of the year award for their Christmas charttopper Wherever You Are. The choir also performed the song Sing which was written for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. They were accompanied at the Royal Albert Hall by the song’s composers; Take That star Gary Barlow and Andrew Lloyd Webber who

both played grand pianos.

Malone said the award topped off a wonderful year for them all. “’It’s been an incredible year, I’m speechless. Music is a very powerful tool and it brings people together,” he said.

The 20-year-old pianist Benjamin Grosvenor became the youngest ever male winner at the event, taking the critics’ choice prize. Russian conductor

of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Vasily Petrenko, took the best male artist prize for his work on five albums.

Violinist Nicola Benedetti was handed the award for top female artist for her album Italia.

Another Academy Awardwinner, composer John Williams, was also among the victors, collecting the best composer title

to go with a lifetime achievement honour. The US composer received his award for orchestral scores for dozens of wellknown movies, including Jaws, Superman, the Harry Potter series and Star Wars. His best composer prize recognised his work on War Horse and The Adventures Of Tintin during the past year.

Montenegrin classical

guitarist Milos Karadaglic - who trained at London’s Royal Academy of Music - took the award for breakthrough artist of the year, while Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli collected the prize for international artist. The event - officially called the Classic Brit Awards 2012 with MasterCard was hosted by Myleene Klass.

NYPD On Facebook

Police in New York are using Facebook as part of plans to aid the crackdown on gang violence in the city. Authorities have said the social networking site is being used increasingly by a new generation of gang members to boast of their crimes and taunt their rivals. The New York Police Department (NYPD) now plans to beef up its own

online presence by doubling the size of its gang unit to 300 investigators.

Although much of the material they gather can be found on public Facebook profiles, the expanded team will also use more aggressive tactics. Officers will adopt internet aliases; create fake profiles and “friend” suspects to gain access to nonpublic information. NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly said: “By capitalising

on the irresistible urge of these suspects to brag about their murderous exploits on Facebook, detectives used social media to draw a virtual map of their criminal activity over the last three years.” There are many examples of gang members using Facebook in an attempt to stir up trouble.

Police said one suspect posted: “Rockstarz up 3-0.” It was believed to be a reference to the body count from a

bloody turf war between the Brooklyn gang and another group, the Very Crispy Gangsters. The Rockstarz also posted a photo of a Very Crispy member with the comment: “He is scared.

Look at him.” Police and prosecutors insist the plans, which are due to

be announced at a law enforcement convention in San Diego, follow strict legal protocols.

Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said the NYPD “has the right, indeed the obligation, to pursue effective avenues for

investigating criminal gang activity and that includes using Facebook and other social media”.

But she said such methods must be closely monitored to ensure they do not become “a vehicle for entrapment or unauthorised surveillance”.

US officials are trying to determine how a farmer came to be eaten by his own herd of pigs.

Terry Garner, 70, set out to feed his animals on his farm in Coos County in Oregon, but failed to return. A family member found Mr Garner’s dentures and pieces of his body in the pig enclosure several hours later, but most of his remains had been consumed. District Attorney Paul Frasier said several of the animals weighed more than 318kg (700lbs).

Mr Frasier said Mr Garner may have suffered a heart attack, or was knocked over by the animals, and was then killed and eaten.

He pointed out that at least one of the animals had previously bitten Mr Garner. But the possibility of foul play has not been ruled out. “For all we know, it was a horrific accident, but it’s so weird that we have to look at all possibilities”.

A pathologist was unable to identify a cause or manner of death, the remains will be examined by a forensic anthropologist at the University of Oregon.

Mr Garner was a “goodhearted guy” who cared for several huge adult sows and a boar named Teddy, said his 75-yearold brother Michael. He added: “Those animals were his life. He had all kinds of birds and turkeys that ran all over the place.

Everybody knew him.”

Michael Garner said one of the large sows bit his brother last year when he accidentally stepped on a piglet. “He said he was going to kill it but when I asked him about it later he said he had changed his mind,” the brother said.

Most pigs are raised until they reach a market weight of between 113kg (250lbs) and 136kg (300lbs), while breeding sows rarely weigh more than 181kg (400lbs).

Marks & Spencer Man Eaten By Pigs First “Shwop”

Marks and Spencer is to sell its first garment made from second-hand clothing donated by customers as part of a new recycling scheme. The retailer claims the limitededition ladies’ coat is the first on the high street to be made from old or unwanted items donated by shoppers and is part of its “shwopping”

campaign launched in April. Customers are being invited to leave an old item of clothing each time they buy something new, with the aim of collecting as many pieces as they sell.

The retailer said over one million items of unwanted and old clothes had been collected to date.

The donated clothing is given to Oxfam, with

ABBA The Museum

A

M U S E U M is being opened in S w e d e n dedicated to Abba, the most successful band to come out of Sweden after selling nearly 400 million records since the 1970s. Former band member Bjorn Ulvaeus said Abba the Museum would be inaugurated in Stockholm next spring.

The museum will feature some of the band’s glitzy stage costumes, instruments and other mementos that were displayed in the AbbaWorld exhibition that toured Europe and Australia between 2009 and 2011. Ulvaeus said he hoped the other three members would attend the opening, which will be in either April or May, but ruled out any chance of a stage comeback.

“We are the only group of that status that has never

been reunited. I think that is cool,” said the 67-yearold. It is strength for Abba that you remember those young, ambitious, energetic people during the 70s rather than some feeble old folks who feel compelled to get up and play all the time.”

The other band members were Benny Andersson, Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. They started the band as two married couples, consistently topping charts in the English-speaking world after winning the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo.

Abba continued performing after both couples divorced, but drifted apart in the early 80s.

Ulvaeus was married to Faltskog, while Andersson wed Lyngstad. We quit at the absolute top,” Ulvaeus said. “And when we stopped it was to take a break and do some other things and then get

back together again. But it never turned out that way.”

However, Abba’s music lives on, with millions of albums sold each year, and through the highly popular stage and film

musical Mamma Mia! Ulvaeus said he had been hesitant about becoming a “museum artefact before I’m dead”, but liked the idea of including Abba in a hall of fame that would also recognise other Swedish

musicians. To bolster the exhibition, Ulvaeus said Abba members had emptied their wardrobes of long-forgotten stage clothes, including 70s-era platform boots and shiny costumes - some of which

he would rather forget.

“I had one costume that I particularly remember that was some kind of Superman leotard with a cape,” Ulvaeus explained.

“It makes me sick when I see it.”

All You Can Eat Pair Banned

EORGE Dalmon, a former rugby player, and his friend Andy Miles have been banned from all-you-can-eat restaurant, Gobi, in Brighton, after the manager branded them “a couple of pigs”. The two men would each eat five bowls of stir-fry during their regular meals at the Mongolian barbecue, which invites guests to create their own dishes from the buffet. Diners are told they can request meals “as many times as you wish” for £12.

The manager, who did not want to be named, said the two friends were eating him out of business. He said: “Basically they just come in and pig out.

We have put up with them for two years but I’ve had enough.

They are in such a hurry to beat everyone to the food they spoil everything. We are supposed to be a buffet but they eat

everything out of the bowls before people can get there. We just can’t keep doing this.”

He said diners drank only water and never paid the optional service charge. He added:

“We are not a charity, we’re a business. It’s our restaurant and we can tell people not to come back if we don’t want them to.” But Mr Dalmon, 26, said the restaurant should honour

its promotion. He said: “They’ve only got small bowls and you can’t get enough in there so we always go back for more.

We’ve been eating there for a couple of years then suddenly

the owner came to our table in front of all the customers and went absolutely mental. He said we were a couple of pigs and we were banned for life. I couldn’t believe it.”

Landslide Kills iPhone Purple 18 Children haze

EIGhTEEn primary school pupils have been buried in a landslide in the Yunnan province of China. Youfang Elementary School and two farm houses were destroyed by the landslide in the village of Zhenhe in Yilang County. The village was hit recently by two 5.6-magnitude earthquakes on September 7 - with the loss of 81 lives.

A statement on the Yiliang government website said it was unclear whether any of the pupils had survived the crush. Another person - in one of the farm houses - is also trapped, it is believed. Officials said

rescuers had arrived at the site and residents had been moved from the area. Rain has lashed the region of mountains and sheer valleys recently, though the cause of the landslide is not yet known.

USERS of the new iPhone 5 have reported problems while taking photos - with some images taken in bright lights showing a purple haze on the screen.

Apple’s customer services say it is “not a known issue”.

But the company acknowledged in an email of a problem to online technology Gizmodo that the purple flare is “considered normal behaviour” for the phone.

Gareth Beavis from TechRadar says the issue was only affecting a small percentage of users: “The outcry is indicative of the fervour a new iPhone generates, with even the smallest flaw leading to far more coverage than any other device. That said, Apple has handled it badly - saying ‘it’s not an issue’ is reminiscent of the ‘you’re holding it wrong’ statement with the iPhone 4 antenna problems.”

Technology forums suggest the problem is

mainly caused when the camera has a bright light off screen. Some theorists suggest the purple flare is caused by the sapphire glass covering the camera.

This latest hiccup over the iPhone 5 follows an apology from the company about defects in its maps app. Towns and cities were put in the wrong place and locations misspelt. But this has not stopped Apple selling more than five million devices worldwide in the first three days since its launch in September.

David Blaine in Electric Shock Stunt

M

agician David Blaine is preparing to spend 72 hours standing on a 20-foot platform surrounded by one million volts of electricity.

Wearing a 20-pound chain-mail suit, Blaine shot arcs of lightning from his hands and head during a news conference to promote his latest stunt, Electrified: One Million Volts Always On, which begins on today (Friday). Blaine said the idea grew from an image he had of himself at the centre of a giant plasma globe but realising the idea would require him to exist in an airless vacuum, he adapted it to use Tesla coils. “Being in the middle of a lightning storm, it feels so amazing, being in an environment you shouldn’t be in,” he said.

Stuart Weiss, Blaine’s doctor, said the main risks include exposure to the ozone and nitrous oxides that are a by-product of ionised air, which humans should not inhale in large quantities. A ventilation system will ensure Blaine has breathable

air and a special visor in his helmet will protect his eyes from the ultraviolet radiation of the arcing electricity. He will also wear noise-cancelling earphones, allowing him to hear and communicate with people on the ground, despite the noise of the Tesla coils. He will drink water through a tube, urinate through a catheter, and has been fasting to avoid the need to go to the toilet.

The public will be able to visit him during the stunt and control the electricity around him. People at viewing stations in London, Beijing, Tokyo and Sydney will also be able to control the coils. Blaine said he hoped to inspire children to learn more about physics - for example, it is not the volts that can kill, but the amps.

The electric current, measured in amps, produced by a typical Tesla coil is low.

Blaine has a reputation for bizarre endurance stunts, the last one involved sitting in a box suspended above the River Thames in London for 44 days with only water and standing unharnessed on a 100-foot-high pillar in New York City for 35 hours.

Hong Kong Boat Crash

A British child was among 38 people killed when a ferry and a pleasure boat collided off the Hong Kong coast. Those who died were on the cruiser Lamma IV, which was carrying partygoers to a

fireworks show to celebrate China’s national day.

It partially sank shortly after the crash while the Sea Smooth ferry was damaged but made it back to port. More than 100 people on both boats were taken to hospital including

some who had been thrown into the water from the party vessel.

Hong Kong authorities said five children died in the crash, the island’s worst accident in more than 15 years and its worst maritime accident in more than 40 years.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that there was one British victim who died in the incident in Hong Kong and we are providing consular assistance to their family.”

Police made seven arrests from the two vessels, including both captains, on suspicion of operating the vessels unsafely. An official from the ferry company involved in the collision said the vessel passed an inspection last month, but he had no details about how the

crash off Lamma, an island to the west of Hong Kong, occurred. Nelson Ng, general manager of Hong Kong and Kowloon (Ferry) Holdings, said the company has not been able to talk to the ferry captain, who has been in hospital since Monday’s crash.

The passengers on board the pleasure cruiser had gathered on Lamma, around two miles south west of Hong Kong, to watch the fireworks display in Victoria Harbour from the water. The majority of the 120 passengers were

employees of Hong Kong Electric and their friends and family. Some relatives of the dead went to the scene to throw spirit money into the water to honour the victims, whilst others waited at the morgue for news about loved ones.

Salvage teams raised the half-submerged Lamma IV using three crane barges and later towed it to the island’s shoreline. Major damage was visible, with part of the compartment at the stern torn away and railings bent and twisted.

Mona Lisa’s Bones Found?

RESEARChERS have opened ancient graves in a run-down convent in Florence in an effort to discover the remains of Leonardo da Vinci’s model for his painting the Mona Lisa. A team of experts has been working in the Saint Orsola convent since April. They believe the body of the woman who modelled for da Vinci back in the 16th century is buried there.

The real Mona Lisa, Italian art historians say, was Lisa Gherardini, the wife of a rich Florentine silk merchant named Francesco del Giocondo, who is thought to have commissioned the portrait - although there is no proof of this. The researchers say that if they can find her skull, they will be able to reconstruct her face and compare it with the painting. “If everything goes as planned, we will find Gherardini and with her skull we will be able

to reconstruct her face thanks to sophisticated technology,” said Silvano Vinceti, head of the National Committee for the Promotion of Historic and

Cultural Heritage. “After that we will be able to compare the face to that of Mona Lisa and maybe for the first time will get an answer which will be based

“With this reconstruction of the face there is a margin of error between four and eight per cent so we will know whether Leonardo used Gherardini or we will be able to draw other conclusions.”

Researchers say Gherardini spent the last years of her life at the convent, looked after by her two daughters who were nuns, and she

was buried there. They are hoping the project will reveal crucial information about the bodies buried in the convent. “The first phase of the work consists of opening up the remains as much as possible. Then we need to collect information about the manner of burial,” anthropologist Irene Baldi said. “Whether the bodies were moved here from another place or buried in a container, if there

was a coffin, or a cushion under the head, this is the information that we are looking for.”

Gherardini might have been an early model for the Mona Lisa, but da Vinci was possibly also inspired by the face of his young male apprentice, Gian Giacomo Caprotti, who some say was his lover. It is not clear how long it will take to study Gherardini’s remains before coming to any conclusion.

Jimmy Savile in Child Sex Claims

TV has said it stands by the documentary which claimed Sir Jimmy Savile sexually abused schoolgirls. Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy Savile, which was broadcast on Wednesday, showed women claiming that he had abused them in the 1970’s, the programme included allegations that he abused girls in his Rolls-Royce and at BBC Television Centre.

Roger Foster, Sir Jimmy’s nephew, said his family is “disgusted and disappointed” that the allegations are being made when the presenter, who died on October 29 last year, aged 84, is no longer around to defend himself. Mr Foster, from Goole, East Yorkshire, said he is not only concerned for Sir Jimmy’s reputation and legacy, but also for the damage the allegations could do to his charities. “I just get so disgusted and disappointed by it. The guy hasn’t been dead for a year yet and they’re bringing these stories out. It could affect his legacy, his charity work, everything. I’m very sad and disgusted,” he said. I just don’t understand the motives behind this. I just think it’s very, very sad you can say these things after someone’s died and the law says you can’t defend yourself when you’re dead.”

An ITV spokesman said: “This documentary is the result of an in-depth investigation into long-standing allegations of serious and widespread sexual misconduct by Sir Jimmy Savile.

Because of the very serious nature of the claims made by several interviewees in relation to this, particular care and consideration was of course given to the decision to produce and broadcast this programme.

The programme takes full account of the fact that Sir Jimmy is not here to defend himself against these claims.”

Sir Jimmy was famous for TV shows like Jim’ll Fix It and Top Of The Pops as well as being a DJ on BBC Radio 1. ITV said the programme, presented by former detective Mark WilliamsThomas, features contributions from several women who claim

that Sir Jimmy was a sexual predator who sexually assaulted them while they were under age. One woman alleges that she was raped by the DJ and another says she was asked to perform a sex act on him. One of the contributors explained how she was too frightened to speak out while Sir Jimmy was alive. Another, who was 14 at the time, tells the programme how she met Sir Jimmy at a school in Surrey in 1974 and he assaulted her in his caravan which was parked in the school grounds.

ChildLine founder Esther Rantzen, who worked for the BBC during the 1970s, was close to tears as she told the programme that she now believes Sir Jimmy sexually abused underage girls, after seeing the fresh evidence from their interviews. “We all blocked our ears to the gossip,” she said.

“We made him into the Jimmy Savile who was untouchable, who nobody could criticise.

Jim’ll Fix It was for children. He was a sort of God-like figure.

Everybody knew of the good that Jimmy did and what he did for children. And these children were powerless,” she said.

Gary Glitter

The programme makers said they will also air a 2009 recording of Sir Jimmy talking in support of Gary Glitter. Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was jailed for four months in the UK in 1999 for downloading child porn and later jailed for child sex offences in Vietnam.

The programme records Sir Jimmy as saying: “Now Gary, all he did was to take his computer into PC World to get it repaired. They went into the hard drive, saw all these dodgy pictures and told the police and the police then ‘Oh we’ve got a famous person ... Oh my goodness, yeah we’ll have them’.

“But Gary has not sold ‘em, has not tried to sell ‘em, not tried to show them in public or anything like that. It was for his own gratification. Whether it was right or wrong is, of course, it’s up to him as a person. But they didn’t do anything wrong but they are then demonised.”

The BBC responded to reports that inappropriate behaviour by Sir Jimmy was an “open secret” at the corporation by saying it found no evidence of any misconduct by the broadcaster. “The BBC has

conducted extensive searches of its files to establish whether there is any record of misconduct or allegations of misconduct by Sir Jimmy Savile during his time at the BBC. No such evidence has been found,” it said in a statement.

Whilst the BBC condemns any behaviour of the type alleged in the strongest terms, in the absence of evidence of any kind found at the BBC that corroborates the allegations that have been made, it is simply not possible for the corporation to take any further action.” The BBC also explained why an investigation into Sir Jimmy by BBC2’s Newsnight was never broadcast. Editor Peter Rippon said: “It is absolutely untrue that the Newsnight investigation was dropped for anything other than editorial reasons.”

Rumours about Savile being a child abuser have been around for the past twenty years both in Fleet Street and in his home town of Leeds, however owing to the lack of evidence; it remained as gossip and rumour. Many journalists felt that the story would remain quiet until after his death, which has proved to be the case.

Former Bee Gee honoured

A BLUE plaque has been unveiled at the Oxfordshire home of former Bee Gee Robin Gibb, as hundreds of fans turned out to celebrate his life. Mr Gibb died in May this year of kidney failure following a long battle with cancer and pneumonia. he was just 62. The plaque was installed by the heritage Foundation and Thame Town Council at Gibb’s home in Priestend, Thame.

Mr Gibb served as president of the heritage Foundation between 2008 and 2011.

Fans gathered at the Bee Gee’s home as the plaque was unveiled from behind a small blue curtain. Mike Read spoke to the crowd ahead of the unveiling, praising Mr Gibb as an “exceptional character”. ”Everybody that knew him loved him.

He wasn’t a showy rock star, he wasn’t a showy pop star,” he said. “He loved writing songs, he loved performing songs.

That’s what his life was about really.”

Sir Tim Rice also addressed the crowd, saying: “It’s a great honour for me to have known Robin and a great honour to be here

today.” Singer Peter Andre was also among those at the event on Sunday. He described Mr Gibb as a “tireless, selfless” man. He added:

“We’ve been part of history today. People are coming from around the world to see that plaque and we were there. It’s incredible. He

was a great man.”

The ceremony was followed by a charity garden party for 400 people in the grounds of Mr Gibb’s home. Funds

raised at the party will go to the Bomber Command Memorial Maintenance Appeal Fund, of which Mr Gibb was a former president.

ThE Two female police officers who were gunned down in Manchester were among the fallen honoured at a national memorial service.

To mark National Police Memorial Day, on Sunday 30th September, hundreds of officers of all ranks were joined by families, politicians and members of the public paying their respects at York Minster.

It came 12 days after Greater Manchester police officers Fiona Bone, 32, and Nicola Hughes, 23, were killed in a gun and grenade attack as they responded to a burglary call in Hattersley, east Manchester, on September 18.

Speaking as he arrived outside The Minster, Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police Sir Peter Fahy said the recent deaths in his force made the day even more poignant. “It does give it a special poignancy because it’s close after the deaths of Fiona and Nicola but the important thing today really is remembering all the officers who have given

their lives during the year. I cannot tell you how much we have been uplifted by the public response, it has been quite extraordinary.

It really does show the level of support for ordinary officers going about their day to day business.”

Home Secretary Theresa May attended the event, which attracted 2,000 people, along with dozens of chief constables.

The service also paid tribute to PC Ian Dibell, 41, who was killed in Clacton on July 9 after intervening in a row. Association of Chief Police Officers, President Sir Hugh Orde said: “The tributes to these officers have shown policing was a true vocation for them. We have heard that it was a job Fiona and Nicola loved, and Ian showed his commitment to protecting others even when offduty, as so many police officers routinely do. We commemorate them and their contribution to policing, along with those that the police family has lost in the past.”

This year was the ninth annual event remembering those who have died in the line of duty since

the foundation of modern policing nearly two centuries ago. Paul McKeever, chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, said the event was “dignified, sensitive and memorable for everyone. This day is a way for the nation to recognise the best

of all human qualities - selfless and devoted courage - and the example and valour of those officers who died on duty acts as an inspiration to us all,” he added.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, said: “We should never forget the work of our Police

Service in our society, protecting citizens, preserving the peace and serving others in difficult situations. It is right that we pay tribute to their heroism and sacrifice in the line of duty. We should be proud of our police and honour those that have fallen.”

World’s Tallest Dead Crickets Litter Texas Ferris Wheel

ThE world’s tallest Ferris wheel is to be built in new York - twice the height of the Statue of Liberty. Plans for the Staten Island attraction have been unveiled by the city’s mayor, Michael Bloomberg. It will cost 178m Euros ($230m) and measure 625ft (190m).

With views of the downtown Manhattan skyline, the New York Wheel will be significantly bigger than the 443ft (135m) London Eye and the 541ft (165m) Singapore Flyer. It is designed to carry 1,440 passengers at a time and is expected to attract 4.5 million people a

year to what has been described as New York’s “forgotten borough”.

Mr Bloomberg said: “It will be an attraction unlike any other in New York City. In fact, it will be, we think, unlike any other on the planet.” While the privatelyfinanced project faces various reviews, local officials hope to have the wheel turning by the end of 2015.

Senator Charles Schumer said: “It’s going to be a real icon. The Ferris wheel will be Staten Island’s Eiffel Tower.” The overall project will also feature the creation of a huge shopping centre and a 200-room hotel and is expected to bring in £308m ($500m) of private investment and 1,100 permanent jobs to the borough.

A n Y holidays planned in Texas in the not too distant future may need postponing for a while. Mild conditions during the winter have resulted in crickets appearing earlier than normal in Texas and they have caused a stench.

The smell of decaying cricket carcasses is plaguing several businesses in a Texan town and they do not seem to be able to get rid of the problem. A bank and a chemist are among the firms struck by the foul odour from the dead insects that have apparently been trapped inside walls and have also been found on pavements in Waco. Bank manager Jani Rodriguez said he had used several scented

products to try and mask the stench in his branch.

The firm has also had the carpets cleaned and covered up any openings where crickets might sneak in.

But the bad smell remains and the problem seems to get worse when it rains.

This is because the insects are flushed out of cracks and crevices in the dirt where they normally live.

“It’s outside, it’s inside,” Mr Rodriquez said of the problem. “You kind of get used to it when you’re here. But when you walk out and come back in, it’s really bad.”

Chemist assistant store manager Mellinda Whitten said the main issue has been scores of crickets that die on pavements

or just inside the front entrance.

The staff does their best to sweep up the crickets, dispose of them and clean the affected a r e a s , Ms Whitten said. But every time it rains, the problem starts again. Fred Huffman, an entomologist who runs a local pest control business, said the cricket issue is an annual problem in central Texas.

But this year has been worse than most because moist, mild conditions during the winter have resulted in crickets appearing earlier than normal.

Typically, the insects do not turn up until late August or early September.

But this year they have been abundant since April, he said. “We have seen a really extended season,” Mr Huffman told the Waco Tribune-Herald.

Health officials have said the crickets do not pose any direct health risks.

Pope’s Butler Goes On Trial P ope Benedict XVI’s butler has gone on trial accused of leaking secret documents stolen from his private Vatican apartments.

Paolo Gabriele, 46, was arrested earlier this year and spent two months in custody after the Pope turned detective and ordered a commission of cardinals to track down the source of the leak. If found guilty the father-ofthree, Gabriele faces up to four years in prison.

were handed to Italian author Gianluigi Nuzzi in secret meetings in cafes close to the Vatican and used in his book His Holiness: Secret Papers of Pope Benedict XVI. He burned the originals and any copies that had been made, adding a flavour of Dan Brown to the whole scandal, inevitably dubbed “Vatileaks”.

The highly sensitive documents contained details of alleged corruption within the Holy See, outlining how contracts were passed to favoured companies and individuals.

The documents also highlighted power struggles between ambition-hungry cardinals vying for the Pope’s

favour. Gabriele was held by Vatican gendarmes after a search of his apartment uncovered personal letters written by the Pope and other officials. They also found gifts that had been given to the Pontiff: a 100,000-euro cheque written out to Benedict from a South American university, a gold nugget and a 500-year-old book.

During his questioning, Gabriele allegedly insisted he “meant to give back” the items and also wrote to the Pope expressing his “sorrow”.

Gabriele said he had not received “any money or other benefits”, adding he acted to “keep the Holy Father informed of certain facts and events”. Gabriele also told prosecutors he had acted because he had seen “evil and corruption everywhere in the Church” and wanted to stop it spreading. “I reached the point of no return. I was sure that a shock, perhaps by using the media, could be a healthy thing to bring the Church back on the right track.”

The leaked documents

An American teacher shot dead a masked teenager he thought was trying to break into his sister’s home only to discover it was his 15-year-old son.

Jeffrey Giuliano, 44, received a phone call from his sister, who lives next door, saying she believed a burglar was trying to break into her house in New Fairfield, Connecticut.

The fifth-grade school teacher grabbed a handgun and went outside to confront the prowler, who was dressed all in black and wearing a ski mask. He started firing when the suspect lunged at him with “something shiny” in his hand, according to police.

When police arrived at

the scene, Mr Giuliano was sitting on the grass next to his sister’s home and the teenager was lying in the driveway with gunshot wounds and a knife in his hand. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was only when police removed the intruder’s ski mask that Mr Giuliano was told he had fatally shot his 15-year-old son Tyler. No charges have been brought against Mr Giuliano over the boy’s death, which police are describing as “tragic”.

State police spokesman Lieutenant J Paul Vance said the teenager had never been in trouble with the law, and some of those who knew him described him as a “good kid with an easy-going personality”.

He said investigators were

at a loss to explain what he was doing outside and carrying a weapon.

It was also unclear if the teen was trying to burgle the house or if it was some type of prank gone wrong.

“Certainly, that is the major question we are trying to answer at this point,” Lt Vance said.”All in all it’s a tragedy.”

Tyler was adopted by Mr Giuliano and his wife a few years ago, according to friends of the family. Mr Giuliano was said to be a popular local teacher who was affectionately known as ‘Mr G’. Rosemary Rasile, the mother of one of Mr Giuliano’s former pupils, said: “He was the teacher you requested in the fifth grade.

He was a great teacher. All the kids loved him.”

Scandals Professor Carlo Cardia, who teaches the history of the Catholic Church at Rome’s Universita Tre, explained: “The Catholic Church has seen many scandals in its history but this is one that has grabbed the imagination of the whole world because it involves the Pope’s butler, a person who you would expect to be trusted and faithful to the Pontiff. “I have told my students that Dan Brown didn’t need to invent stories about the Catholic Church because there are so many real life ones inside the Vatican - it is made of men who are open to temptation. This is a scandal on a human

level because it shows the weakness of man but I don’t think it will have a profound effect on the Church because it has other more serious problems to deal with.”

Gabriele is accused of aggravated theft and his trial will be held in the Vatican courthouse, a building in the Piazza Santa Marta and appearing in the dock alongside him will be IT expert Claudio Sciarpelletti, who has been charged with aiding and abetting the disgraced butler. A three-man panel of judges will hear the case against the two accused, and there will be no jury.

Only eight journalists were allowed into the hearing despite hundreds of accreditation requests.

There will be no live relay of the proceedings, with no TV crews or photographers permitted. The tight access

has raised questions about whether the Vatican is being totally transparent about the case.

Scapegoat There have been constant rumours in the Italian media since the scandal broke that Gabriele may have been a scapegoat and had the help of senior cardinals within the Church.

One theory is that the documents were leaked to undermine Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Vatican’s secretary of state. Others speculated the leaking was aimed at Monsignor George Ganswein, the Pope’s private secretary, who angered the Vatican old guard by giving interviews to Italian glossy magazines. One source said: “Monsignor George has brought to public attention a role that should be very private and that has resulted in many people

getting jealous because they see him as having far too much influence over Pope Benedict.”

In an Italian TV interview earlier this year, Gabriele admitted there was “about 20 of us” involved in passing documents outside the walls of the tiny city state and according to prosecution documents posted on the Vatican’s website. Others identified only as “W” and “X” were part of the operation. Their identities are expected to emerge during the trial.

But with a major conference of bishops scheduled to take place at the Vatican in early October, as well as celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, Pope Benedict will want the trial over as quickly as possible. The chance of a pardon has not been ruled out.

Pilot Error Blamed for nepal Crash ThE plane crash in nepal that killed 19 people, including seven Britons, was almost certainly caused by pilot error.

The Dornier aircraft, which was taking trekkers from the capital Kathmandu to the town of Lukla before they went on an expedition to Mount Everest, came down shortly after take-off. It had been claimed the pilot of the twin-propeller Sita Air plane had reported hitting a bird, thought to be a vulture or kite, moments before the crash and this may have caused the disaster.

But aviation ministry official Suresh Acharya said: “A plane crash does not occur simply just because its engine was hit by a bird.” Mr Acharya said “The pilot may have been “panic-stricken” and could have turned too sharply to try to get back to the airport without gaining enough altitude following the bird strike”. He added: “The pilot’s failure to maintain the required radius is a likely cause of the accident.” The plane

reported problems within two minutes of taking off.

The airport said the aircraft’s right engine burst into flames after being hit by a large bird, and slammed into a river bank moments later, exploding into a huge fireball. Footage showed the front section of the plane was on fire when it hit the ground, and it appeared the pilot attempted to land the aircraft on open ground beside the Manohara River. The fire quickly spread to the rear, but the tail was still in one piece at the crash site.

Police have handed over the plane’s black box data recorder to authorities investigating the disaster.

“We have taken out the data recorder and handed it over to the civil aviation authorities. The rescue work at the site has ended,” national police spokesman Binod Singh said.

As well as the seven Britons, five Chinese people and three passengers and four crew members from the Himalayan country were also killed, including a Nepalese tour guide.

Investigation into the cause of the crash is likely to take months.

Seven British Victims named

The victims were due to begin a trek towards Everest Base Camp on Saturday on an expedition scheduled to last until mid-October with Farnborough-based Explore Worldwide, using local guides from Sherpa Adventures.

The British victims were named (left to right) as Raymond Eagle, 58, Christopher Davey, 51, Vincent Kelly, 50, Darren Kelly, 45, Timothy Oakes, 57, Stephen Holding, 60, and Benjamin Ogden, 27.

It is understood that Vincent and Darren Kelly, from Bolton, Greater Manchester, were brothers. Darren, a property developer and

businessman, was said to be semi-retired. A friend said: “Darren was just a really nice bloke. You would struggle to find anyone who could say anything bad about him. He was just a first class guy.”

Vincent was a company director and a “most prolific” supporter of Bolton Lads and Girls Club. Friend Mark Brocklehurst, who is a member of the club’s board, said: “It is a terrible tragedy that has seen us lose a wonderful powerhouse of a man, leaving us numb. There aren’t enough words to describe just how wonderful Vincent was - a dedicated family man with a generous heart of gold who was a perfect role model for all.”

Mr Oakes’s wife Angie

Gaunt said her husband was a keen mountaineer who always wanted to go to Everest base camp. “He lived life to the full and died doing something he always wanted to do. It should never deter people from living out their dreams,” she said from the family home in the Cheshire village of Winwick. Mrs Gaunt said she did not want the death of her husband, who worked in education, to deter others from taking adventure trips. “Please don’t paint a negative picture. I have lost my husband today and my daughter has lost her dad.

People have got to live and enjoy what they want to do. That is exactly what Tim would want people to do.”

Oxford University graduate Mr Ogden lived in London and worked for international law firm Allen and Overy, where he had recently qualified as an associate. The firm said in a statement: “It was clear to everyone that he had an incredibly promising career ahead of him. Ben will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”

Mr Ogden and Mr Holding were both members of the Bremex Mountaineering and Climbing Club. In a statement posted on its website, the club said: “They will be missed by the entire club.”

Paying his own tribute to Mr Holding, club member Matt Morton described him as someone who always had time for others: “I would just say he was a gentle giant of a man.”

Cheshire East Council said Mr Eagle, who lived in Macclesfield, had been a support worker for the disabled for the last 11 years. Neighbour Pauline Girdwood said: “This was the sort of thing he did... He was a go-getter so in a way I’m not surprised that is where he was.”

George Michael Too Sick To Sing

G

E O R G E Michael has cancelled t h e Australian leg of his Symphonica tour, telling fans that he is battling “major anxiety” after the pneumonia that almost killed him. Michael, aged 49, said he was heartbroken to have to cancel the dates, which were postponed last year due to the illness which kept him in an Austrian hospital for a month. however, the singer appeared reluctant to answer questions about his health ahead of a concert at the Royal Albert hall in London on Saturday.

Michael had completed a string of dates across Europe since August. His

nine UK dates planned for October will still go ahead.

The Australian tour was due to start in Perth on November 10 with further concerts planned in Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, finishing at the Hope Estate Winery in Hunter Valley on December 1. A statement on the singer’s website said: “Since last year’s illness I have tried in vain to work my way through the trauma that the doctors who saved my life warned me I would experience.

They recommended complete rest and the type of post traumatic counselling which is available in cases like mine. I’m afraid I believed (wrongly) that making music and getting out there to perform for the audiences that bring me such joy would be therapy enough in itself.

Unfortunately I seriously underestimated how difficult this year would be.”

He went on: “Although I was right to believe that the shows would bring me great happiness and that my voice would recover completely - I truly think that some of my recent performances have been my best ever -, I was wrong to think I could work my way through the major anxiety that has plagued me since I left Austria last December.” Michael added: “All that’s left for me to do is apologise to my wonderful Australian fans. I promise faithfully that as soon as I have completed these shows here in the UK I will receive the treatment which is so long overdue”.

Michael spent a month in Vienna General Hospital’s intensive care unit after being taken ill while on his Symphonica tour there at the end of 2011.

Earlier in September he performed in Vienna, telling the audience it was “good to be alive”.

The Faith singer is believed to have given the hospital a thousand tickets for the show as a thank you.

Fans in Australia will be given full refunds for their tickets, although those with Perth tickets have been offered the chance to see Elton John instead. He will fill Michael’s November 10 slot.

Suicide Shown Live In U.S. ThE Fox news Channel in America has apologised for broadcasting live footage of a man shooting himself in the head after a high-speed police chase.

The incident happened at the end of a carjacking chase that began in Phoenix, Arizona and ended about 90 minutes later. The news was covering the chase using a live helicopter. The man driving a copper-coloured four-door sedan stopped, ran into the desert, and placed a handgun to his head and fired. He was declared dead at the scene and has not yet been identified.

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith told viewers that the video was supposed to be on a five second delay so it could be cut off if something went awry. “We really messed up, and we’re all very sorry,” Mr Smith said. Fox apologised for showing the violence on air. “We took every precaution to avoid any such live incident by putting the helicopter pictures on a five second delay,” said Michael Clemente, executive vice president of news editorial. “Unfortunately, this mistake was the result of a severe human error and we apologise for what viewers ultimately saw on the screen.”

The man had allegedly stolen a car from a couple

at gunpoint outside a Phoenix restaurant just before 11am.

Police located the vehicle and gave chase and the man fired several shots which hit the police vehicle, but officers escaped injury. A police spokesman said, “He got out of the car and shot himself. Efforts to revive him were not successful and he was dead at the scene. “ Shepard Smith was narrating the video and clearly had his doubts about what was being shown from the moment the man stopped the car.

“This scares me,” he said.

“You wait for the end of these things and you worry about how they may end up,” he said.

“This makes me a little nervous; I got to tell you, a little nervous.” The video showed the man running erratically in a field before putting the gun to his head and firing. He fell to

the ground. Fox’s picture quickly cut to Smith, who was shouting “get off, get off, get off, get off.”

After the commercial break, Smith apologised repeatedly. “That didn’t

belong on TV. We took every precaution we knew how to take, to keep that from being on TV and I personally apologise to you that it happened,” he said.

Women Rescued From Kidnap in Columbia

TWO women, a Briton and an Australian, were rescued near Ecuador’s border with Colombia a day after they were kidnapped.

Ecuadorian army officials have named the 23-year-old Briton as Katherine Sara Cox and the 32-year-old Australian as Fiona Louise Wilde.

Police and armed forces staff “located and rescued the two girls, Australian

and English, kidnapped in Cuyabeno”, Ecuador’s interior minister Jose Serrano said on Twitter. The women had been abducted on Friday while visiting the Cuyabeno nature reserve in the Tarapoa region, in Sucumbios province, officials said. They were reported to be in “good condition”.

They were travelling in a canoe as part of a group of seven tourists - five foreigners and two Ecuadorans - and two local Ecuadorans working as guides.

The other foreigners were not kidnapped, Kidnappings are common among Colombian gangs.

Australia’s foreign ministry said its embassy in Chile was “working urgently with Canadian and British authorities in Ecuador to obtain more information”, and officials were also in contact with the Australian’s family. Ecuador’s environment ministry has quoted local people as saying that three members

of a Colombian gang of ex-paramilitary fighters known as the Black Eagles were behind the abduction.

A spokeswoman for the FCO said: “We are aware of an incident and are working with the Ecuadorian authorities.”

The FCO currently advises against all travel to the areas immediately bordering Colombia in Carchi province due to criminal activity and organised crime.

We Are All Winners

C

hampagne corks were popping in Vivo on Sunday along with our neighbours, Leonardo’s and O’neil’s. The reason?

Well all three venues had winners at the 6th Tenerife Entertainment Awards.

The award ceremony was held at Castillo San Miguel on Sunday and was attended by all the great and the good that is the Tenerife Entertainment scene. The day was hosted by nathan Swift and had live performances by the Band nominees; Kick, Sound Chaser and the Traveller Blues Band. Also performing live were the Yasmine Khan who won the 2012 Tenerife Loves Karaoke, as well as dance schools Estrella and Ritmania and The Tenerife Tigers.

Here at Vivo, we celebrated Marc Craig bringing home the Best Male Vocal, sponsored by Venlii; he won after beating some seriously stiff competition from Alexander Mcrae, Marlo and Mikey Mike. It was the sixth time that Marc had been nominated, the 4th time he had won, but the first time h e

had w o n as a solo artist.

Coming on top of his wedding blessing, it proved to be quite a week for our maestro.

“I seriously wasn’t expecting to win, but it is the perfect end to the best week of my life. My own particular highlight of day was the winner of best band “Kick” performing in lime green fluorescent mankinis, it brought the house down!!!”

Leonardos’, a very popular bar and just next door to Vivo won the Best Group, sponsored by Restaurante Margarita, with their resident duo Loaded.

Loaded Leonardo’s were absolutely delighted, as owner Helen said, “We are very proud of Dylan and Scott, all the hard w o r k a n d their

dedication entertaining the holiday makers in Leonardo’s has been recognised. A massive well done, you guys are an absolute pleasure to work with and we look forward to many more fantastic nights”. Again, Loaded were up against some seriously good talent in the shape of Destiny, IS & Mikey Mike and Triple A. O’Neils, an equally popular Bar across the road from us here, won Best DJ, sponsored by Leonardos’, at the award ceremony with their incredibly popular DJ Johnny.

Boyfriends Past

My boyfriend is a great guy and treats me really well. We’ve been together happily for 2 years now.

The problem is that before we met he was a real tearaway and had been in lots of trouble with the police, ending up with a criminal record. We’ve been trying to get a mortgage recently and apply for a credit card but he can’t because of his history.

I love him so much but can’t sacrifice my own goals in life because of his past. What’s your advice?

Kelly These days, pretty much everybody has some form of debt around their neck.

Your boyfriends past is obviously an additional problem and before you set about trying to move

forwards with him, you need to be absolutely certain that he’s turned a corner. It would be a complete waste of your time, and his, to build a stable home and take on a mortgage if he’s going to ruin it all wouldn’t it?

Without knowing the ins and outs of your circumstances, its nigh on impossible for me to give you specific advice. Only you can decide whether or not to stay with this guy and give things a proper go, you’ve already invested two years in the relationship!

Ultimately, no matter what hardships may lie ahead, no matter what difficulties, if you really love him and want to be with him, you’ll find a way!

Just be certain that he is the one for you before investing more time and money.

Move out of Mum’s

My mum has been alone since she split with my dad five years ago. I moved out of my rented flat to live with her throughout the tough times. I’ve now met a man and really want to move out with him and start a life.

However, when I mention it to my mum she goes crazy and begs me not to leave her. How can I ever get out of this without breaking my mum’s heart?

I don’t think there’s an easy way Beth and I don’t envy you in the least. As ever, talking things through and reaching some kind of understanding will work wonders for both of you. You both have lives to lead and it’s not healthy to depend so heavily on each other.

Your mum has to understand that you need a life of your own. If she really loves you, eventually, she’ll accept that you need to move on and enjoy life for yourself.

Agreeing on regular visits or even meeting up for lunch or coffee a few times each week would help you both adjust to the change.

Start talking things through now and keep talking until you reach an agreement that you’re both happy with.

At the end of the day, you should be able to do this and maintain a good relationship with your mum, don’t worry.

Sick husband Grieving for my Dog

I’m worried that my husband is ill but he’s doing nothing about it. He’s smoked for years but gave up six months ago which is great.

But since giving up he’s developed a horrible wheezing cough and is really short of breath all the time. He refuses to visit the doctors so how can I persuade him? can’t bear the thought of losing him.

Until your husband is ready to speak to the doctor there really isn’t much you can do is there?

Keep telling him how much you love him and tell him how devastated you would be if he was really ill. Unfortunately, it’s down to him in the end Julie. Have you suggested going along and holding his hand at the doctors?

You know the man better than

My dog, died two months ago and I’m finding it a real struggle without him. I don’t have any close family and he was really the only companion I had.

He was there though thick and thin. I know that no other dog could replace him so how will I ever brighten up my home with life again? What do you think I should do?

anybody, all I can recommend is that you keep on at him until he finally gives up and gets himself seen to.

It’s difficult to watch a loved one suffering and even more difficult when they refuse to do anything about what seems to be something fairly simple.

Make sure he knows how much you love him and keep trying.

We all grieve in different ways Victoria and there’s no set timescale for it either!

Two months isn’t a long time at all when you consider the years you had your dog for. Give yourself time to come to terms with this loss.

Eventually, the sadness will be replaced by happy memories and you may well find that you’re able to get another dog.

Just hang in there for the moment and things will slowly start to get better for you.

Right now, you’ve got to go through a range of emotions before you can come out the other side but that will happen eventually.

I’m probably the worst person in the world to talk to about grief as I’ve never really experienced it in the way you are now but I do know that in time, things will improve. Good luck.

Meaty Meatloaf here’s a simple recipe that is easy to make, quick and tasty.

When you’ve got mince meat in the freezer, and you have already made bolognaise recently, or cottage pie - what can you do that is different and will feed the family? Try this Meatloaf recipe it has never failed me!

Ingredients:

700 g lean ground beef 1 large onion, chopped salt to taste ground black pepper to taste garlic powder to taste 6 slices white bread, cut into cubes 120 ml milk 1 egg 4 tablespoons English mustard, divided 120 ml Tomato ketchup, divided 40 g brown sugar

Method:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

In a large bowl, thoroughly mix ground beef, onion, salt, pepper and garlic powder. Mix in bread, milk, egg, 2 tablespoons of mustard and 60ml of Tomato ketchup.

Press the meat mixture into a loaf pan. In a small bowl,

Energy Saving Solar Oven!

It’s the future! You can cook a large percentage of your food using just the power of the sun (all you need is sunshine, which is almost every day of the year here in Tenerife). Making your own solar oven is very, very easy (a child can do it...). And what’s more; you can make your own working solar oven with stuff you have lying around your house right now, here’s how: What you need Pizza box or shoe box (a deeper one for bigger items!)

Tin foil Scissors or a Stanley knife Laminate sheets (passed through the laminator with NOTHING sandwiched between them - CLEAR!) 4 straws Sticky tape how to make it Take the lid and cut out a square 1cm from the edge right the way around. In the hole you have cut, stick the laminated sheets ensuring that it is properly sealed. This gives you a

Dice your favourite herb, and mix that into the meat mixture before cooking Try using different meat. Turkey mince or chicken with cranberries mixed into it for something different!

Fill it with mushrooms or wrap boiled eggs in the mixture.

You’re ready to cook! here’s how: Now I tried it with a simple readymade pizza from the supermarket, but you can cook just about anything in it, as on a good sunny day temperatures inside the box can reach a staggering 270°c!

I removed the defrosted pizza from the packaging and placed it inside the box.

I placed it in direct sunlight on the balcony, trying to avoid any

breeze, with the sun reflecting from the attached foil card into the lid.

20 minutes later, it was perfectly cooked. I was astonished. hints and tips: It can take a little longer to cook food in a solar oven, so be patient. It will never burn in the oven, so you can leave it in there for a full day!

There’s not need to stir or move anything while cooking as the rays will cook the food evenly!

The food tastes better. It’s cooked slowly and some people even say that the food is enhanced with the sun’s energy.

Never look directly into the oven, as you are concentrating the sun’s rays! This is dangerous, try and wear sunglasses If you can spare the time, paint the outside of the box black.

Dull colours absorb even more heat than shiny, light or bright colours. This will help the oven get even hotter!

If you’re worried about ants forget it. Solar ovens are too hot for ants and most bugs, birds and insects. They will usually avoid your oven even when it’s full of food.

There’s loads of different things that you can cook in it.

stir together remaining mustard, ketchup and brown sugar; pour on top of the meat loaf.

Bake in preheated oven for 2 hours.

Serve with roast potatoes and fresh vegetables!

Why not top it with strips of bacon

Go On! Say What You Mean!

As I have said before, people are forgetting how to spell because of phone texting. It appears that they are also making up new words all the time. The speed at which new words are appearing is incredible. One of my particular favourites at the moment is Numpty - (Stupid or Thick) eg: Look at that numpty, driving with no lights on!

Back in my UK days, we used the word Dit-Dot to mean the same thing!

These days, there are so many different ways to say the same thing without actually saying anything at all. For example, you can pre-book a seat on an aircraft. I would like someone to explain to me exactly what pre-booking is. You either book a seat or you don’t. How can you pre-book something before

aircraft. Surely the whole trip to the airport including pre-booking your seat is part of the pre-boarding process. hen, we have idiotic names for some items, for instance!

There is no Pine or apple in a Pineapple, French Fries weren’t invented in France, A Guinea Pig isn’t a Pig and it doesn’t come from Guinea and Boxing Rings aren’t round.

Learning English must be a complete and utter nightmare for foreigners.

How do you explain to someone that an alarm goes off when it is on or that a wise man is the opposite of a wise guy?

The strangest one of all and my favourite is that “Fat Chance” and “Slim Chance” means exactly the same thing!

Some words are over used. One such word is “Up”..... for example.

We wake up. We speak up. You can be up before the courts and someone there will write up a report. We often call up our friends, and when we meet them, dress up. The weather brightens up; we warm things up and clean things up. We lock up the house. Sometimes, people stir up trouble, line up for tickets, work up an appetite, and think up excuses. Drains must be opened up when they block up.

If you are up to it, build up a list of ways that up is used; it’ll take up a lot of your time, but if you don’t give up, you may end up with a quite a few. When the sun comes out the weather clears up. When it rains, it wets the soil and muddies things up. When it doesn’t rain, things dry up. I could go on but my time is up, so I’ll wrap it up because it’s time to shut up!

Cruising Around Un-Blockbusters!

Santa Cruz

I decided to take a trip to Santa Cruz Sunday market this week. It’s the first time that I have been there in two years.

I was amazed at the change. The market is almost all Car Boot Sale. Not only that, but it has spread and spread throughout the streets and roads and pavements. It is absolutely immense.

I have never seen so much rubbish in one place ... and people were happily buying it.

Top perfumes and aftershaves for 25 euros (the real thing), avocados and Mangoes from people’s gardens, Old electronic goods, I even saw an accordion.

I began to think as I looked at the record players, Nokia phones, typewriters, cassette recorders and big bulky televisions. One day, that

very expensive I-Phone will be a load of old rubbish and will appear on a car boot sale for a euro. It’s bound to happen. There were DVD’s for 50cents and quite nice, brand new shoes for 5 euros.

One thing that I didn’t like though! As I turned a corner I saw a man holding a puppy in the air.

This puppy was far too young to be away from its mother and he was shouting “50 euros for the doggy, only 50 euros”. I wanted to thump him. I got

away from the sickening sight and saw another fella doing the same thing with an even tinier little mite of a different breed. That shouldn’t be allowed and it should be monitored. I know that there are a lot of people in dire straits at the moment with the unemployment levels that we have here in Tenerife but I just can’t condone that.

It won’t stop me going to the market again, but it made me very angry indeed.

The rains were due to arrive at night and I still hadn’t repaired the roof from the last time it rained in January. I decided to get to work and mixed cement and filled in the area of the roof where i thought the problem was. I also noticed that the problem had been exacerbated by a blocked drain. I got my hand down it and dragged out all the bits and piece and sorted the problem out! Later in the day I painted the cemented area in quick drying waterproof paint.

That night it rained. It poured. My roof was fixed and not a drop entered the house! Hurrah.

I thought that would be the end of

unblocking things for a while but I was wrong!

I have been on a diet. It is quite an extreme one and it has left me terribly blocked up. I went to the chemist which thankfully only had one person inside. However, by the time the pharmacist had finished serving the lady in front of me, the shop was full of people, all just standing there, waiting and listening.

I asked him, in a quiet voice, for a fast acting laxative and he said OK. He said, very loudly that I would “Have to put it up my Anus”. I heard a titter and a gasp from behind me. I nearly choked on my chewing gum. I couldn’t believe that he had practically told everyone what I was going to be doing with my medicine. I don’t want people that I don’t know discussing my anus and certainly not in public!!!!

I was MORTIFIED when i had paid as everyone looked at me as I limped out onto the pavement!

I wouldn’t mind, but he said it would take an hour. I used it then went to my car, within a minute I had to drive back very quickly. The problem had been solved.

WhERE ARE YOU FROM? I’m from Cardiff in Wales WhEn AnD WhY DID YOU MOVE TO TEnERIFE? I moved to Tenerife with my partner Gethin in October 2008, mainly because my mum, dad and brothers lived here but also wanted to make a change and enjoy life more x WhEn’S YOUR BIRThDAY? 13 August 1988 :-) DO YOU COnSIDER YOURSELF TO BE FAMOUS? Haha. NO! Famous for what? I think I’m only a star in my mum’s eyes haha x ALThOUGh YOU ARE In ThE LIMELIGhT, DO YOU COnSIDER YOURSELF TO BE ShY? No I’m not shy at all in everyday social situations, however before my shows i always get very nervous, I now learnt how to embrace those nerves and use them to my advantage :-)

IF YOU hAD A DIFFEREnT JOB, WhAT WOULD IT BE? It would definitely be a primary school teacher! I love children, what a satisfying job it would be!

I’ve got my A levels so one day maybe I could train :-) WhO AnD WhY IS YOUR IDOL? My idol in the music industry, wow there are many but i would have to say Celine Dion simply because of her voice, i used to sing all her songs with a hairbrush when i was young :-)!

But my idol in life has to be my mum she is just incredible! Love you mummy :-) WhAT IS ThE BIGGEST DISASTER YOU hAVE EVER hAD On STAGE? Has to be when i lost my voice at one of shows, after singing only two songs it completely went, I could talk but couldn’t sing one note it was so embarrassing!

After an overwhelming week of reunions, stag do’s, hen do’s, weddings and awards I sat down to work on my column and realised that summer’s gone and Christmas is only 12 weeks away!!

This is always a quiet time for Hollywood, so I thought why not take a look at the best of British at the moment in movies, T.V. and something I’ve neglected so far (shameful really for a singer), music!!!

New in cinemas is “Dredd”, a British/ south African production with a British director, writer and mainly British cast
