rench police have stopped what could have been a devastating attack at Disneyland, Paris. They have discovered a huge cache of weapons and bombs in a garage and fear that a massive Mumbai-style massacre was planned for the theme park during the Christmas holiday. Traditionally Disneyland is packed with children and their parents over the festive season, and police fear that planned devastating attack by Islamic extremists could have been
more horrific than the commandostyle raids on Mumbai in November 2008, in which 166 people died. During overnight raids, armed police found the guns and explosives in a four story building in the eastern Paris suburb of Torcy near the park. Armed officers surrounded the building and residents were evacuated. The raid came after 11 men were arrested and another, Jeremy Sidney, aged 33, was shot dead in Strasbourg during anti-terror swoops across France last weekend.

Hello Again, The search for little April Jones goes on; I can hardly bare to think of the agony her family is going through and pray that she is found very, very soon. The fact that her neighbours marched in silence to a special Sunday Service on Sunday, reiterated to her family that the little girl is still in everybody’s hearts and minds. We may all be 2,000 miles away but we are all thinking about her.

cell was to start a ‘war across France’. Most of those arrested were converts to Islam, having learnt about the religion while spending time in French prisons for a wide range of offences. Many of the young men arrested had apparently made wills, and carried a list of Jewish groups they were targeting. All of them were said to be linked to a Salafist group
which was committed to waging a jihad or holy war - across Europe. It follows Mohammed Merah, a 23-yearold French Algerian with similar Salafism connections, shooting seven people, including four Jews, dead in the Toulouse area in March. At least three policemen were injured in Saturday’s Strasboug raid, while others received direct hits to

Sidney was thought to be returning from a mosque, was holding a .22 rifle. Detectives believe extremists were planning a wave of deadly strikes in a twisted bid to turn France into a Muslim state. Former Portsmouth football star, turned Islamic radical, Yann Nsaku, 19, was among those arrested in the seaside resort of Cannes, Anti-terror officers then swooped on the building used by the gang in Torcy. Meanwhile, security chiefs have warned intelligence reports indicate that al-Qaida could still stage a massacre in London after US spies rumbled a plan to target Britain, France and Germany in simultaneous strikes. Sources claim London landmark buildings were targets and thousands could have died. The search of the garage used by Sidney and another man has uncovered the cache, which is thought to have supplied a raid on a Jewish shop on September 19th. A grenade was thrown into the kosher food delicatessen, injuring one person and causing a huge amount of damage. Following the find, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said: ‘We are clearly and objectively confronted with an extremely dangerous terrorist cell’, and that everything needed to be done ‘to prevent the risk of a terrorist attack in France.’ He confirmed that ‘elements used in the manufacture of explosives’ were found, including potassium nitrate and sulphur, along with guns. Detectives say the aim of the armed

A Paris police spokesman said that the 11 suspects had now been held for the statutory 96 hours, but this would be extended because of the arms and explosives discovered.

More Trouble NEWS ON THE ROCK for Islas airways
The Canary Islands have become the sixth autonomous region of Spain to seek a bailout from the national government. The Canaries are seeking just over 750 million Euros from the Fondo de Liquidez Autonómica (Regional Liquidity Fund) which has resources of some 18 billion Euros. President Paulino Rivero said that Madrid will not impose conditions for the assistance, and the Canaries’ economic commissioner, Javier González Ortiz, stressed that the islands have the lowest debt per capita ratio in Spain and that the application was not because the region was insolvent, but because the funding had more accessible conditions than other sources. It’s still a bailout, though, and the Canaries joins Andalucia, Catalonia, Murcia, Castilla-La Mancha, and Valencia in requesting help to a total of just over 16 billion Euros. The automatic confirmation of residency system (SARA) that Binter has been piloting is now ready for use by all other airlines, says the Ministerio de Fomento. It is expected that all airlines will be using it by the end of the year. Passengers travelling between the Canary islands with BinterCanarias will not need to prove their residency by means of a Certificado de Empadronamiento para viajar if they book online. Residents will be able to accredit their resident status at the point of ticket purchase and will not be required to go to their local Ayuntamiento. The new measure is called SARA (Sistema Acreditación Residencia Automático): BinterCanarias has developed it in conjunction with the Ministerio de Fomento.SARA works by facilitating a telematic check with the Ministerio de Fomento’s database when travellers buy tickets online through www.bintercanarias.com. This check will validate whether or not the passenger is resident in the Canaries, and if it is confirmed, then the discount will be applied automatically, and no further action will need to be taken by the traveller to prove where they live.
a collision of two vehicles during Saturday night on the TF-1 as it connects with the TF-2, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, has left a total of six people injured, among them a seven-year-old girl. The emergency services attended a 43 year old male with trauma to chest as well as some lesser injuries; a woman of 45 with trauma to back and neck and a 24 year old man suffering with trauma. A 7-year-old child was treated for neck pain, while a woman of 25 also showed mild whiplash; and another 43-year-old woman had mild chest pain. All the injured were taken by ambulances to hospital. santa Cruz firemen were involved in the rescue of 5 children trapped in the Barranco de Santos. Three boys and two girls aged between 12 and 15, called the emergency services when they became trapped in the bottom of a ravine in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Six fire fighters moved into the Red Caves to rescue the children after they had been exploring and became trapped One of the boys suffered a sprained ankle and fractured finger after a fall and was taken to hospital.. The rest of the group were uninjured. Just a reminder that today, Friday, 12 October, is a Canaries-wide public holiday for Spain Day. It’s also the day that the Adeje Oktoberfest starts which itself coincides with Adeje’s Fiestas Patronales de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación. all work on El Mojon hospital involving heavy machinery has been stopped due to monetary constraints. The Unión Temporal de Empresas (UTE), formed by the contractor FCC-Isolux-Corsan-Syocsa Inarsa consortium, says that as of 2 October, all works on El Mojón hospital were paralysed.
TrOUBLED airline Islas airways have said in a statement that, despite having to cancel 33 of its 51 flights on Tuesday due to the majority of their staff ‘becoming ill’, that it will continue to operate. There are increasing rumours that the company is in serious financial difficulties as it is alleged it owes its over 100 staff three months wages and has numerous debts. A total of 24 Islas Airways flights were cancelled on Tuesday due to the airlines staff walking out and refusing to work. The staff claim that the company owes them three months wages and despite
numerous requests for a financial plan to clarify their future there has been a lack of response from the airline. The staff finally decided to stop working. The walkout took place at 2.00pm; none of the scheduled routes between
the islands were able to take place leaving passengers no option but to book with alternative airlines. Last week an Islas Airways plane was unable to take off due to the reported economic difficulties the company is experiencing and the
on-going alleged fraud investigation over the use of the 50% resident subsidy for passenger transport between the Canary Islands. This process has frozen grants due to the airline and therefore reduced their revenue drastically.
On Wednesday it was exactly a year since the submarine eruptions started on the island of El hierro and the president of the El hierro council, alpidio armas, spoke about the damage that has been done to the island. Mr. Armas explained that the economic damage has so far been estimated at over 20 million Euros in lost revenue in the last year although there is an even larger figure which is the ‘perception that the people have about the safety of the island’. He claims that the island is safe and that the economic situation is precarious and he is now seeking the support of both the EU and Spanish and Canarian government to overcome the islands economic problems. The recent re-activation of the seismic activity has hampered any attempts
to attract tourists to the island. Coupled with the recent fires, El Hierro is struggling to gain the confidence of tourists. “We know that nothing is happening” he argues, but the problem he faces is how to transfer this confidence to the visitors to the island. There have been 12,503 earthquakes, both on land and at sea, and no one has been hurt. He also claimed that the media have ‘amplified’ every single event that has occurred
during the process which has ‘hurt’ the island. He has made a request to the scientists to continue with their research but to ‘not communicate every single event’ as to not further alarm people.
He has also said that “if the measuring devices that have been have been on El Hierro were moved to another island, the results would be similar, since 99% of earthquakes are felt only by scientific instruments”.

C&T’s innovative methods of teaching have again borne fruit once again with the magnificent results of the Trinity College exams, taken in June this year. Last Friday afternoon, the successful students were presented with their certificates at an award ceremony staged at the C&T Puerto de la Cruz premises.
The guests of honour in attendance included Mr. Barry Lynam, the Senior Consultant of Trinity College London for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Ms. Judith Gutiérrez Negrín, Servicio de Ordenación Educativa. Letters To The Editor Dear Editor, We seem to have lost some TV programmes during the move, any chance of finding them again, In fact you could increase the TV guide to a double page per day and include BBC 3 & 4 ITV 2,3 & 4 More 4 E4 DAVE Sky 1,2 & Sport to name a few popular programmes, People do pick their papers for the TV guide as well as the news, so you could increase your distribution and be a better weekly newspaper. We all Love the Tenerife Weekly at Callao, Please make sure we still get our copies, Thanks. Cheers Roger
Dear Roger, Thank you for your letter, we do like to hear from our readers and value their comments. It was a difficult decision to make with regards to the T.V. listings, and not one we took lightly. I wanted to put more news in the paper, to be able to cover more news events that had happened in the week, the only way I could do this was to cut back on the Television pages. I am sorry that you are disappointed, but hope that you continue to enjoy the Tenerife Weekly. Regards, Lorna
Dear Editor, I’m wondering if you might be able to help me. My wife and I along with our two children and their partners and close friends, have recently returned from a gorgeous ten days in Tenerife. It’s the first time my wife and I have been and will be going again. As a group, we took a bus trip to Playa das Americas on a Saturday and for reasons I won’t go into, we got a taxi back. Had we got the bus what happened wouldn’t have happened. I left my bag in the front of a taxi that took us from outside a club back to the Aguamar Hotel where we were staying. I had hoped the taxi driver would’ve realised and handed it in either to the hotel (if he remembered) or the taxi’s lost property or the local police station to where we made the lost property report. I’m disabled and walk with the aid of a stick. I have early MS and the onset of premature Alzheimer’s so forget things easily and often. Like my bag. I also
recently had a heart attack and there was a lot of medication in my bag but also importantly, I am a writer and use a spare BB phone as a PA and write emails (to myself) on the BB. We hadn’t realised we needed extra bolt on fees on Tenerife so I was unable to forward my emails of a lot of things I had written on the BB and consequently they are lost as I simply have no notion of remembering a single word, which is very, very frustrating. I don’t know if you can help, in a small way of whatever but I had been banking on the honesty of the taxi driver and I’d hate to be disappointed because he was a really nice fella. He was Italian and we talked (at length) about the euro, British roads and my wife’s driving (learner). In my bag was a digital camera (zoom lens, 16.5 mm, lens cover, shoulder carry strap. 8gb sd card with several photos I’d taken in Tenerife, so I’m disappointed to have lost them, many of my 2 year old grandson who was on holiday with us.) Blackberry phone in blue rubber case. This is important because I have lost many contacts as well as messages
and several hundred photos. A GTN spray for heart attack prevention along with misc tablets. Also an mp3 player, 2 more SD cards 4gb each unused, Duracell spare batteries for camera. There were also keys, headphones and other items that have slipped my mind. The bag was black with NYC in orange letters on the front. I’m pretty desperate to get it back if it’s at all possible and any help you could possibly give would be most appreciated. I’m not well off so losing these things is a big blow and as you probably know, insurance never give back the same and cannot reimburse memories and such. My daughter paid for the trip for my wife and I to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and this kind of hung a cloud over it, especially as I feel so bad for forgetting. I am very upset I’ve lost it and the fact it was my fault but I had hoped the driver would have returned it. Sorry to have taken your time (for reading). btw, great publication, very informative... kind regards Ron Matthews
Dear Tenebay Team, I just thought I would tell you that the Mercedes we put in Tenebay for sale was sold within the first week you advertised it, I had dreadful problems with uploading the picture of it (my end not yours) and I was very pleased with your assistance with that.
We live in a little village well outside the tourist area and never thought we would be able to sell the car so easily so very many thanks for that and I wish you well with your new site, it’s so easy to use even a wrinkly like me can manage it (except or the overlarge picture of course!!) Many thanks again Jackie

ThE new Carmen Mota show, Evolucion is to replace the highly successful spectacular show aire, which was performed in front of over 90,000 people in the Pirámide de arona, Mare nostrum resort.
TWO years and two months. That is the time that has elapsed since a human skeleton was found sandwiched between mattresses in a room in the Pension Padrón, in santa Cruz de Tenerife. The case caused outrage in the Canary Islands not only because it was discovered the remains were of a man who had been tortured, killed and robbed. But, that the police also found that several drug addicts had
been staying in the room with the corpse, and that the hotel was still open to the public. Police and forensic investigators identified the victim - as well as the alleged perpetrator of the murder and potential collaborators and accomplices - the trial is due to start on October 29th. The prosecution has demanded that the perpetrator of this crime, José Antonio Luis Aguiar, serve a prison sentence of 40 years and a fine. The victim, identified as Angel Bermejo Beltrán,
aged 55, suffered a terrible ordeal. He was held against his will, his feet and hands tied to a bed while he was assaulted and threatened with death to reveal the pin number to his credit card. He was then beaten. It is alleged that he was left to die in the hotel room and then hidden under two mattresses. The skeletonised remains of Angel Bermejo Beltrán were found on August, 2010 by the owner’s children as they undertook renovation work on the building.
Taking over 2 hours, this dance spectacular traces the history of Spanish dance from flamenco to tango to ballet. 112 Inaccessible for the Deaf
The Coordination Centre of emergencies and security does not have a system that allows deaf people to send alerts by text message. But the group states that no other community has put up so many obstacles. The Canary Islands Government ensures that before the end of the year it will have solved the problem. Imagine walking back home after a working day and suffering a bad fall or, perhaps, a sprain or a fracture. There is no one in the surrounding area. What do you do? You call 112 on your mobile. However imagine if you are deaf, you would think that you would think that the solution of sending a text instead of making a call to the same emergency room would be simple. Not so, 112 does not offer this option, even though years ago the upcoming introduction of a system to facilitate the access to the deaf was announced. Domingo Hernández and Luis de Javier are two deaf members of the group who want to solve the problems of mobility and communication facing persons with disabilities - or with functional diversity, - as they prefer to say and which, in the case of emergencies, pose a serious risk to its integrity. “We
have met several times with the Government and we are always told that this will be fixed soon.” “But it’s been years and we are still in the same situation”. Now, the economic difficulties facing the Administration do not invite optimism, although Domingo and Javier are clear that “rights and laws are above the crisis”. In fact, over the years there have been several incidents, including that of a young girl who suffered a fall and had to wait on the hard shoulder of the motorway without being able to ask for help. Centre Coordinator of emergencies and security (Cecoes) 112 admits that it still lacks a system that allows deaf people to send SMS alerts, but ensures that it will be a reality before the end of the year. “It is s a demand which we must respond to,” stated the Centre, which argues that the delay was due to “technical complexity” involved in the integration of the new system on the current platform of the 112. The truth is that other autonomous communities already have a similar service. They are cases of Cantabria, Aragon, Catalonia and Madrid. The Canary Islands are “the worst” in this regard. Domingo and Javier do not believe that it
is only a resource problem: lack of sensitivity is, in their view, the main problem they are faced with. “Politicians should be put in our place. What would they do if they could not hear anything and this problem?” Although the most immediate problem is the operability of the text message service, deaf people have other proposals to make themselves more accessible to the Group 112. They would like to include the Whatsapp, a means of communication that is widespread especially among the deaf. Video calls would
Business Closures
The Canary Islands has lost a total of 9.909 companies since the beginning of the crisis, going from 64.498 companies in June 2007 to 54.589 in August 2012, according to the ‘ advancement of the market labor AfiAgettes ‘ bulletin. In the last year alone, a total of 1,016 companies closed in the archipelago. Despite these figures, the Canary Islands are below the national average in the rate of business closure since the crisis started. With the latest available data from July 2012, the archipelago registered 658 records regulation of employment (ERE), while at the beginning of the crisis there were only 31. Of the 658 ERE registered companies
in the Islands in July 2012, 303 correspond to employment cancellations, 155 correspond to decommissioning and 200 full-time reductions. Over the same period
for the previous year, the ERE reported the average annual increase amounted to 13.6 per cent in the region, below the national average which stands at 44.7%.
also represent a significant improvement. “When we asked we were told that it is very expensive and that they would start with the SMS and do things step by step, but for now we have neither one thing nor the other”, said Domingo. Video calls should be linked to “training in sign language or the hiring of interpreters”, an aspect that is crucial to the 112 service available to deaf people, is the view of Javier, “the ideal solution is that there is at least two contracted interpreters.” The obstacles that face deaf
people accessing 112 are a fraction of those found in many moments of their life and work. “In hospitals, at airports, in hotels...” “There are many examples.” Javier works as a civil servant in Social Security and, after asking insistently, only recently has had flashing lights installed in the building for emergencies. “But only at the building where I work.. They always say the same thing: that there is no money”. But as Domingo says, “A cable and a bulb are not so expensive. It’s a sensitivity issue”.

Brits Death To Be Investigated
A
Spanish judge has ordered police in the resort of Fuengirola to investigate the death of a Scottish tourist. Chris Lindsay, from Edinburgh, died in hospital on the Costa del Sol in October 2011, five days after a night out with workmates. The 34-yearold father-of-three was found collapsed in the street by police. He was heavily bruised and his money and passport were missing. His family are convinced he was the victim of a violent attack. They have been urging Spanish authorities to launch a formal inquiry for the last year. Chris’s partner, Vikki Solomon, spoke of her frustration: “If you knew what had happened then you’d maybe be able to process that. But we don’t know and what we are being told and what we are seeing are different things.” Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill raised the
Chris Lindsay the 34-year-old with his baby Jude
family’s concerns with Spain’s Consul General in Edinburgh in April. He also referred the family to Victim Support Scotland which took up the case. The breakthrough came when the charity travelled with Chris’s father, Harry, to meet police in Spain. During a half hour discussion with officers of the Policia Nacional in Fuengirola, they were told a judge had instructed the force to investigate. After the meeting,
Mr Lindsay said “It means a lot. It’s a lot off your shoulders as well. We can just wait now and let people get on with the job. And hopefully, the police will come up with some answers for us.” Spanish officers are expected to visit Scotland to interview Chris’s former colleagues from the Marketing Company in Glasgow and Edinburgh who were on holiday with him. Chris stayed out drinking late one
night with a senior colleague, Brian Quinn. They became separated and Mr Quinn said he searched in vain for Chris before returning to their rented villa. An ambulance was called a few hours later when Chris was found by police. The nurse who treated him in hospital is convinced he had been attacked. Jose Cabrera said: “He had signs of violence. He had bruises in the abdomen and it looked like it was hit. It was impossible that he could
make those injuries to himself.” Mr Cabrera also said Chris told him he had the sensation of being followed when he left the pub. Chris had consumed a lot of alcohol over several days and tested positive for cannabis and cocaine. A post-mortem examination found that he died from multiple organ failure but could not establish why. Victim Support Scotland said the case highlighted a wider access to justice problem in some European countries. The charity’s chief executive, David McKenna, said: “We do experience a lot of reports from people who could not get the police to believe them, take them seriously or investigate the crime. It’s terrible.” The police in Spain declined to comment. A spokeswoman at the Spanish embassy in London said that all crimes, including those against British citizens, are investigated. The European Parliament has approved a new EU directive to strengthen victim’s rights but it will not take effect until 2015.

a hOLIDayMaKEr is the latest Briton to die after falling from a hotel balcony on spain’s Balearic Islands. Paul Clough, 41, died in hospital after falling from the balcony of his accommodation in Menorca. Mr Clough fell through a gap in the third-floor balcony and into a garden below. he was taken to hospital with multiple fractures and chest injuries, but died soon after. he was staying in a thirdfloor room in the resort of Ciutadella. A Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) spokeswoman said: “We can confirm the hospitalisation and subsequent death of a British national following
a balcony fall in Menorca.” His death follows those of several Britons on the Balearics this summer. In April, 20-year-old British tourist Adam Atkinson, from Castleford, West Yorkshire, died in Magaluf, Majorca, after reportedly falling down stairs. Later that same month, Benjamin Harper, 28, from Twickenham, southwest London, fell to his death at the four-star Sol Antillas hotel in the same resort. It is believed the roofer, while on a stag do, had gone out onto the balcony for a cigarette before leaning over and falling. A month later, British tourist Charlotte Faris, 23, also plunged to her death during the early hours of the morning in Magaluf. The holidaymaker from Stevenage, Hertfordshire, had checked into the Teix
hotel just hours earlier. In August, the FCO and travel association Abta launched a campaign to help prevent young people from having accidents on balconies at popular holiday resorts. Most incidents have involved people aged between 18 and 35 with alcohol often playing a part, according to the FCO. British consul in the Balearics Paul Abrey said: “Some people have fallen whilst climbing to a friend’s apartment, others have simply lost their footing after a few too many drinks and a few have deliberately jumped off aiming for the pool below.”It should go without saying these practices are extremely dangerous and can cost them their life or leave them permanently disabled.”
spanish red Cross appeal
sPaIn’s red Cross is to launch its first-ever public appeal for donations to help spaniards affected by the country’s deepening economic crisis. Miguel angel rodriguez, a spokesman for the aid organisation also known as IFrC, said that the agency is trying to raise about $38m over the next two years to help around 300,000 people living in poor conditions. spain is in its second recession in three years with an almost 25 per cent unemployment rate, the highest in the European Union.
The new IFRC campaign, titled Now More than Ever, is due to feature in 30 Spanish provinces. A campaign video shows a family with an all but empty fridge receiving a box of groceries from the Red Cross. The agency helped some two million people in Spain last year, most of who were in need of food or money. Before the crisis, the Spanish Red Cross were involved in helping immigrants in Spain and disaster-hit or poverty-stricken countries abroad. But with one in four Spanish adults out of work, more families have been forced to rely on food handouts.

5 MILLION Euros Kidnap foiled
A child has been released in Barcelona after a 5million euro ransom demand. The brains behind the kidnapping are thought to be an inmate of a prison in Valencia who had met the father of the child previously and had information on both mother and child. The child, aged 11, was held by his captors for two days in a Barcelona apartment with his hands and feet tied and under sedation. It is also alleged that he was threatened repeatedly. The kidnapping happened when the child and his mother, of Colombian origin, travelled from Valencia to Barcelona, to meet with some people who had assured them they would help regularize their documentation. When they arrived at the meeting place, the woman and her son were bundled into a vehicle driven by a young woman, who took them to a clearing in the region of the Baix Llobregat.
Once there, four people with firearms and covered faces, took the child and placed him into the boot of a car. They then demanded the payment of a ransom of 5 million euros from the mother if she wanted to see her son again. The woman alerted police
who triggered the Central Unit of Kidnappings and Extortion; they quickly discovered the link between the father of the child and the man behind the operation, which allowed them to move forward with the investigation. Almost two days after the kidnapping,
Tarragona Tower Competition
THOUSANDS of spectators packed into an old bull ring in Spain to watch as hundreds of people built incredible human towers for the 24th Tarragona Castells Competition. The Catalan tradition of creating these towers is believed to date back to the 18th century and is performed by dance groups using precise techniques. The tower builders are called Castellers, the Catalan word for castle, and each dance team is known as a Colla. The annual competition saw over 30 groups of Castellers build elaborate human towers made up of up to 400 individuals, though most stand at
the base to support the higher up tiers. Barefoot adults and children - many wearing safety helmets - climb their way up the human tiers to form the top of the towers. Around 7,000 locals and tourists watched the incredible two-day spectacle which was held
at the Tarraco Arena Plaza, in Tarragona, southwest of Barcelona. Held in the first weekend in October, the popular event attracts thousands of tourists and in 2010 it joined the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
they located the apartment in Barcelona where the boy was being held. The special unit agents managed to free him and they subsequently took him to Barcelona hospital, where he rejoined his mother. Police arrested a woman, named by Catalan Police as Marta
C.V., 46 years old and of Spanish nationality, and Guillermo F.M., aged 36, also Spanish, for his alleged involvement in the kidnapping. The police have identified another alleged member of the group and have issued a police search and capture order.
Police Arrest Bomb Maker Spanish police have arrested a man on suspicion that he planned to copy the 1999 Columbine school killings by planting bombs around a university. Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz said of the arrest, “It appears a massacre has been averted. Police said they seized 140 kilograms (308 pounds) of bomb-making material when they arrested the 21-yearold man in the Balearic island city of Palma de Mallorca. His personal diary and Internet blog, the man, a Spaniard only identified by his initials J.M.M.S. wrote of his admiration for the perpetrators of the Columbine attacks and how he planned to place bombs around a university in Palma. He had openly expressed his hatred for society, and, in particular, students. A police spokesman said there was nothing to indicate that the man had planned to carry out
the attack for any set ideological reasons. Twelve students and one teacher were killed in the Columbine attack in Colorado. The two gunmen then killed themselves. The Spanish man’s diary indicated he had considered committing suicide once he had carried out the attack. Spanish police said the man had tried several times to buy guns, but finding this impossible then opted to use bombs by buying explosive-making material on the Internet.
The statement said he had planned to make shrapnel pipebombs. The arrest took place just as the material was delivered to his house. Police said they had been watching the man for the past five months after messages referring to the Columbine massacre began appearing on Internet pages in Spain. A spokesman said the suspect had previously studied electronics at a technical training school and had begun a course in business administration.

sarah Brightman in space Trip s InGEr sarah Brightman is set to blast off to the International space station (Iss) next year in a trip aimed at “realising her dreams”. The 52-yearold, who as part of hot Gossip topped the charts with I Lost My heart To a starship Trooper back in 1978, will be the first tourist to go into space since a hiatus in the space tourism programme since 2009. “I am planning to become a space flight participant,” said Brightman, who has starred in West End musicals such as The Phantom Of The Opera. The schedule for her
flight will be confirmed shortly, she said, and she is preparing for six months’ training in Russia. Commercial flights to the ISS for space tourists are organised through USbased company Space Adventures, chairman Eric Anderson accompanied Brightman at a Moscow news conference. “My journey is about realising aims and dreams,” Brightman said, adding that she might “sing a song from space”. “This voyage is a product of a dream, my dream. Finally it can be a reality. I am more excited about this than anything I have done in my life to date.” Previous space tourists visiting the ISS on a total of eight trips have included the Canadian founder of
the Cirque du Soleil, Guy Laliberte, and IranianAmerican entrepreneur Anousheh Ansari, so far the only woman. Russia stopped taking space tourists in 2009 because of lack of room in its cramped three-person Soyuz space capsules that take astronauts to the ISS. But Space Adventures that it had signed a deal with the Russian space agency for three
commercial passengers to book seats to the ISS each year as Russia plans to increase the number of Soyuz flights. The flights are expected to start again in 2013. The first space tourist, Denis Tito, travelled to the ISS in 2001. So far a total of seven space tourists have taken part in missions. One of them, US software pioneer Charles Simonyi, paid $35m for his trip.

armstrong in Doping scandal
T
hE Us cyclist, Lance armstrong, ran the most “sophisticated drugs programme that sport has ever seen”, says a Us anti-Doping agency (Usada) report. The report is more than 1,000 pages long and includes evidence from 11 of armstrong’s former teammates and reveals that hotel rooms were turned into bloodtransfusion centres, and how armstrong’s exhanded out cortisone pills. The report also describes how couriers would follow him around whilst on tour to deliver drugs to him and his team and how he would have his blood taken out, frozen, and put back at a later date.
Armstrong won the Tour six times as leader of the US Postal Service team from 1999-2004 and again in 2005 with the Discovery Channel as the primary sponsor. But Usada said the path Armstrong chose to pursue “ran far outside the rules”, describing it as “the most sophisticated, professionalised and successful doping programme that sport has ever seen”. Armstrong did not fight the charges, and strongly denies that he ever cheated. Just hours after the report was released he posted on Twitter: “What am I doing tonight? Hanging with my family, unaffected, and thinking about this. http://bit.ly/Po6mXT #onward.” The link was to a page on his website celebrating the work he has done for his cancer charity. His lawyer, Tim Herman, called the report “a one-sided hatchet job - a taxpayer funded tabloid piece rehashing old, disproved, unreliable allegations based largely on axe-grinders, serial perjurers, coerced testimony, sweetheart deals and threat-induced stories”. The report sets out the allegations in chronological order, starting in 1998 and running through to 2009. It includes examples of Armstrong using multiple drugs, including the blood-boosting hormone EPO, citing the “clear finding” of EPO in six blood samples from the 1999 Tour de France that were retested. UCI concluded those samples were mishandled and could not be used to prove anything. Testimony from three of his former teammates, Tyler Hamilton, Floyd Landis and George Hincapie also feature, saying they all received EPO from Armstrong. Christian Vande Velde also
gives evidence of the pressure Armstrong put on the riders to go along with the doping programme. He testified: “The conversation left me with no question that I was in the doghouse and that the only way forward with Armstrong’s team was to get fully on Dr Ferrari’s doping programme.” The report also describes “an outstanding early warning system regarding drug tests”. One example came in 2000, when Hincapie found out there were drug testers at the hotel where Armstrong’s team was staying. Aware that Armstrong had taken testosterone before the race, Hincapie alerted him and Armstrong dropped out of the race to avoid being tested, the report said. And, although she
did not testify, Armstrong’s exwife Kristin is mentioned 30 times in the report. “Kristin obliged Armstrong’s request by wrapping the pills and handing them to the riders. One of the riders remarked, ‘Lance’s wife is rolling joints,’” the report says. The report also depicts Armstrong’s relationship with doctor and training guru Michele Ferrari. Like Armstrong, Ferrari has received a lifetime ban from Usada. Believed to be the mastermind of Armstrong’s alleged doping regime, Ferrari was investigated in Italy. Armstrong claimed he had cut ties with the doctor after a conviction in 2004 that was later overturned. Usada cites financial records that show payments of at least
$210,000 made to Ferrari in the two years after that. It also cites emails from 2009 showing Armstrong asking Ferrari’s son if he could make a $25,000 cash payment the next time they met. “The repeated efforts by Armstrong and his representatives to mischaracterize and minimize Armstrong’s relationship with
Ferrari are indicative of the true nature of that relationship,” the report states. “If there is not something to hide, there is no need to hide it and certainly no need to repeatedly lie about it.” Armstrong revealed in August that he had given up the fight to clear his name, and was stripped of his seven Tour de France titles.

Abduction Teacher in Court
J
eremy Forrest, the teacher who ran away with a 15-yearold girl has appeared in court charged with child abduction. The 30-year-old was at Eastbourne Magistrates’ Court after he was returned to the UK on Wednesday. The married amateur musician, from Ringmer in East Sussex, had left the UK with Megan Stammers on September 20, sparking
a Europe-wide search and prompting public appeals from both sets of families. They were eventually spotted in Bordeaux by a British tourist, and Forrest was arrested on suspicion of child abduction following the issuing of a European Arrest Warrant. He appeared before magistrates in the French city last week and his solicitor Phil Smith has said his client looks forward to the “full story” emerging in the coming months. Megan has since been
reunited with her family after being flown home separately. She was reported missing when she failed to turn up for school; before it emerged she had travelled to France with Forrest. The pair were spotted on CCTV cameras on a crossChannel ferry from Dover to Calais and later tracked to Bordeaux, where they were recognised by a member of the public who had seen television coverage of the case.

Also wanted the news to come from us, before anyone else!??.” Her Manchester United and England striker husband has previously spoken about how fatherhood gave him a bigger kick than his football career. Rooney has previously described becoming a father as the “proudest moment of my life”. He and Coleen were
childhood sweethearts and got married in a lavish ceremony in June 2008 when they were both aged 22. However, it has not all been sweetness and light for the couple after it was revealed that Rooney had used the services of a prostitute during Coleen’s first pregnancy. Coleen’s career has gone from strength to strength; she has been writing her own column in Closer and OK! Magazines, presenting a TV show with Sir Trevor McDonald and making her own series for ITV called Coleen’s Real Women.

A 14-year-old girl has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly lacing homemade brownies with a household chemical and feeding them to two boys. The boys, who are brothers aged 12 and 13, were unharmed during the incident, which being held in a closed children’s
court hearing in the Australian state of Queensland. It is alleged the girl, who is not related to the boys but lived near them in Brisbane, deliberately added a poisonous household chemical to the brownies and fed them to the pair at their home. A police spokesman said the poison was a substance generally
found around the home. It is understood the boys stopped eating the brownies and told their parents about the unusual taste. The parents then contacted police. The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with attempted murder, administering poison with intent to harm, and acts intended to maim.

skydiver Plans new space Leap attempt
D
arEDEvIL skydiver Felix Baumgartner has failed in his second attempt to skydive from outer space after his meteorologist ruled out that possibility, just as they did on Tuesday. He now hopes to make the leap from an altitude of 120,000ft (36,576m) and reach speeds of hundreds of miles an hour on Sunday in New Mexico, weather permitting. The Austrian wants to break a record set by American Colonel Joe Kittinger, who jumped from an altitude of 102,800ft (31,333m) in 1960. He also wants to become the first skydiver to break the sound barrier.
After abandoning the attempt due to the windy weather on Tuesday, Mr Baumgartner said he felt “like a tiger in a cage waiting to get out”. The delicate balloon is made of a plastic film thinner than a supermarket shopping bag, but cannot fly if winds are above 2mph. It holds 850,000 cubic metres of helium gas and will dramatically expand as the balloon rises towards the stratosphere. Mr Baumgartner, a former military parachutist, is planning to be in free fall for fiveand-a-half minutes above the New Mexico desert when he eventually does jump. His attempt has been years in the making. Wearing a specially designed suit that is
pressurised and heavily insulated to protect him against the extreme conditions at high altitude, he will breathe pure oxygen throughout the flight. The moments immediately after he jumps will be critical. “The problem is that for around
30 seconds I will have no air cushion whatsoever, meaning that I won’t be able to control the way my body spins,” he said. “I have to get myself into a stable position before I reach the speed of sound.” Scientists will monitor the effects of his descent
on his body. They hope to develop life-saving technology that could be used by high-altitude pilots, astronauts and space tourists. “Proving that a human can break the speed of sound in the stratosphere and return to Earth would be a step
towards creating nearspace bailout procedures that don’t exist,” said Mr Baumgartner. During a test jump earlier this year, from an altitude of 97,145ft (29,610m), Mr Baumgartner reached 537mph, the speed of a commercial airliner.

mmerdale, is celebrating 40 years since it started life as sleepy Emmerdale Farm, and to celebrate, there will be a one-hour live episode on Wednesday 17th October. It seems to be that if there is a big anniversary in soap land, there must be a live episode - EastEnders and Coronation Street both marked milestones by going live.
But Emmerdale has one big headache that their rivals did not. All the outdoor scenes are filmed in a purpose-built village in the north of Leeds, but indoor scenes are normally shot nine miles away at ITV studios. If a character walks into the Woolpack, the walk to the front door is filmed in the village, but the building is actually a shell and the interior scenes are filmed separately in Leeds. Because of the distances and logistics involved, the city centre studio is not being

used for the live episode. But Emmerdale would not be Emmerdale without the Woolpack - so producers have had to install the pub interior inside the actual pub building for the first time. The weather is one thing producers cannot control. Filming on normal episodes is often brought to a halt by bad conditions in the village. Episode director Tony Prescott says “I’ve been in the village when the main street has become a river. We’ll have to find our way around this. We’ve just got to do it.” Producers cannot prepare a back-up plan because there is not enough time to set up and rehearse two different scenarios, and moving indoors at the last minute would present continuity issues with the pre-recorded episodes that go before and after. Producer Stuart Blackburn is not worried about rain - it makes night scenes look more dramatic, he believes. “A bit of wind and lots of rain, I’d be happy with that,” he says. “It’s the gale force that we’re

There have been 100 proposals of marriage Of 70 Weddings planned only 56 actually went ahead Zak & Lisa Dingle have the longest surviving on screen marriage of 14 years 13 wedding receptions took place in the Woolpack There have been 7 runaway brides 3 sham marriages 15 couples have been married more than once Bob Hope holds the record for most married, clocking up 6 weddings to 4 women and fathering 7 children. 2 weddings are due to take place in the live episode dreading.” But the main reason people watch live episodes is because they secretly hope it will go wrong, isn’t it? The Live episode will use 27 cameras, 61 cast members, 350 extras, 4 newborn babies on set, 110 hours of rehearsals and 1 stunt co-ordinator. There have been 6 versions of the live episode, 7 wedding dresses are on standby and 79 crew for
make-up, props and costumes will use 4 golf buggies to get about. Blackburn acknowledges the dangers of a live show and hopes that the risk, as well as the storylines, understood to feature a death, two births and two weddings, will attract new viewers who then stick with the show. “If the irregular viewers come, and the curious - those that only watch live episodes to see if the actors mess up that’s great,” he says. If we can get new viewers and viewers who haven’t been with us for a while, I’m convinced they’ll look at it and go wow, that’s a really good drama.” In 2010, the EastEnders 25th
anniversary Bradley fell off a roof, Coronation Street’s 50th anniversary live episode had aftermath of a tram crash. Blackburn says he is not simply trying to outdo his rivals’ most spectacular storylines, and believes soaps must stay rooted in the real world. “There’s a balance with every episode and every week, regardless of anniversaries,” he says. “Someone called it attention versus affection. Without the attention, those big headlinegrabbing stories like the rapes, the murders, the affairs, and then people will drift away. But if that’s all it’s about, then the affection goes.

australian super Telescope
I
F there is anyone out there, a new “super telescope” unveiled in the australian outback could be the best hope yet of finding it. some 400 miles from the nearest city in Western australia, the colossal new radio telescope consists of more than 30 dishes linked together. Dr Megan Clark, chief executive of Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), said: “What’s really different is that we used to be able to look at small parts of the sky and look at the super galaxies. We could only really do that from an area about the size of your small fingernail. Now, with this new leap forward, we can scan areas of the sky as big as your hand. We can see large parts of the sky, we can start to really scan and ... have a panoramic view of the universe in a way that we’ve never had before.” The Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope, at the remote Murchison Radio-astronomy
Observatory in the Western Australian desert, is made up of 36 antennae, each 12 metres (40ft) in diameter. Australia has been a formidable strength in global radio astronomy and this project has been years in the planning. The £90m facility can survey the sky much faster than existing telescopes, with the antennae sensitive to faint radiation from the Milky Way, giving it the ability to detect distant galaxies. Speaking at the official opening, chief scientist Brian Boyle said studying the radio waves would tell astronomers unique details about the cosmos. He said: “They can tell about the gas from which stars were formed and about exotic objects - pulsars and quasars - that really push the boundaries of our knowledge of the physical laws in the universe. Radio astronomy also gives us an insight into the very beginnings of the universe.” Science minister Chris Evans said the telescope was a major step forward for innovation in Australia. He added: “This will be 50 years’ worth of scientific
research performed in Australia, providing incredible scientific knowledge about our galaxies. It will be the world’s most powerful radio astronomy telescope and has huge capabilities way beyond anything that currently exists.” The Australian telescope will
eventually be linked to similar facilities in South Africa and New Zealand, linking 3,000 dishes as part of the “Square Kilometre Array”. It will be 50 times more powerful than current radio telescopes and will explore exploding stars, black
holes, dark energy and traces of the universe’s origins some 14 billion years ago. Mr Boyle said the ASKAP telescope would see more than 350 researchers from over 130 institutions undertaking 10 survey science projects.

ThE hugo Boss signature maybe synonymous with quality, elegance and, above all, haute Couture, however, its founder, hugo Ferdinand Boss, was k n o w n in World War II for something q u i t e different: m a k i n g costumes for the nazi troops led by hitler and using Jewish prisoners as labour.
The Hugo Boss story begins in 1923, in a small tailoring shop in Metzingen, a town South of Stuttgart as the historian and journalist Jesús Hernández tells in his book “100 secret stories of the second world war”. In 1931 Germany had been ravaged by the harsh conditions that the allies had imposed as the nation that ‘ officially ‘, had started the First World War. Specifically, this country was now in ruin since it was obliged to pay large taxes to the winning side, known as “war reparations”. This, coupled with the great economic crisis of 1929, had left Germany in crisis. At the time, a young Adolf Hitler had already taken the reins of the Nazi party and he had begun to impress many Germans. Apparently, one he had impressed was Hugo Boss. In April 1931, before Hitler had come to power, Boss, who was then 46, decided to join the Nazi party. In 1933, two years after starting his textiles Hugo Boss had already decided that his future would provide clothing to the “Waffen SS” ,an elite corps created by Hitler for his protection, among other functions, SA, a paramilitary organization of the Nazi party, and the Hitler Youth. As sales began to increase, Hugo Boss included an advert in a local newspaper

stating: Uniforms of the SS, the SA and HJ. Work, Sport and Rainwear. Made by ourselves with good and recognized quality, and at good prices. Approved by the SA and the SS.Uniform with the license of the Reich. His future had been sealed. From that moment the tiny workshop orders
multiplied. 1935, Boss decided to abandon the manufacture of civilian clothes and devote himself exclusively to the manufacture of uniforms. He was to supply up to eight different styles of uniforms for the Reich. Orders reached hundreds which prompted Boss to buy a fabrics factory in 1939 to save costs in the process of creating garments. The market was certainly favourable for the brand. The invasion of Poland by Nazi troops on September 1, 1939, provided another opportunity for Boss to make even more money. The military machinery of Hitler was launched and someone had to provide clothing to all those soldiers who travelled half the world. Who else would they choose, but the tailor from Metzingen. In addition the fashion designer now received orders from the Wehrmacht, the bulk of the forces of land, sea and air of the German army, as well as from the costume section (Bekleidung) and staff (Stab), belonging to the Office of General Affairs of the Army (Allgemeines Heeresamt). Boss was at the time a wealthy businessman whose clothing was known in all Germany. The small workshop of Metzingen became the second largest textile company in Germany during the Second World War. Although the war meant the increase in orders for Boss, it also caused it a number of other problems. The first of these
was the decrease in availability of products through trade, causing the shortage of raw materials. There had also been a cut in the budget for uniforms, the German Government saying they needed the money for weapons research. Boss came up with a simple solution. If in the 1930s uniforms of the SS, the SA, the HJ and the Wehrmacht were manufactured with a mixture of fibres and wool, during the war the recycled wool would be the basic element of uniforms. The needs of uniforms for the German army could never be covered completely due to the shortage of raw materials, so German troops were forced to requisition tons of clothes in occupied countries. Another problem for Boss was the lack of workers. However, Hitler’s troops again came to his aid. Hugo Boss had no hesitation in using labour of slave workers from occupied countries,
especially Polish women. After the war, in 1945, things began to change radically for Hugo Boss, who went from being a renowned businessman to being accused by the new Government of collaboration with Nazism. He was declared by the Allied authorities to be a ‘beneficiary’ of the Nazi regime and his company qualified as ‘important’ in the economic fabric of Hitler’s regime, two conditions that caused Boss to lose the right to vote and a fine of 80,000 Franks. Despite the large amount, the money was not a problem to tailor. It was paid with money obtained through the sale of large quantities of silk which was used to make parachutes that Boss had bought on the black market during the war. However, after being fined, Hugo Boss decided to change from making military costumes to work uniforms. At the same time, he lodged an appeal with the courts to clear his name. He never obtained the forgiveness of the Government of the new Federal Republic of Germany. He died in 1948. After the conversion of the company, the descendants of Hugo, Siegfried Boss and Eugen Holly, decided to radically change the business and find a new dimension for their future collections of clothes. Twenty years later the company grew substantially and, today, has become a brand that is worn by celebrities all over the world. Girl, 14, shot By Taliban T a L I B a n g u n m e n have shot and seriously wounded a 14-year-old schoolgirl who rose to fame for speaking out against the militants in her blog, published by the BBC. Malala Yousufzai was shot in the head and neck when gunmen fired on her school bus in Pakistan’s Swat valley. She was airlifted to Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital in the valley’s main town of Mingora, where doctors are battling to save her life. Taliban spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan said his group was behind the shooting. “She was pro-West, she was speaking against Taliban and she was calling President Obama her ideal leader,” he said in a telephone interview from an undisclosed location.
Police said two other girls were wounded in the attack. The US State Department condemned the shooting as “barbaric and cowardly”. Malala became well-known in 2009 for speaking out
against the Pakistani Taliban, appearing in television documentaries and blogging about her life. At the time, the Pakistan government was seen to be appeasing the
hardline Islamists. The Government agreed to a ceasefire with the Taliban in Swat in early 2009, effectively recognising insurgent control of the valley whose lakes and mountains are popular
with tourists. The Taliban set up courts, executed residents and closed girls’ schools, including the one that Malala attended. The army launched an offensive and retook control of Swat later that
year, and Malala later received the country’s highest civilian award. She was also nominated for international awards for child activists. Since then, she has received numerous threats.

Police Still Searching For April
P
olice searching for April Jones have again renewed their focus, this time on a small village a few miles from where she disappeared. Scores of police officers scoured land around Ceinws, which lies three miles north of Machynlleth. It is the village where Mark Bridger, the man accused of murdering April, had been living before his arrest.
Teams from Dyfed Powys police were joined by officers from Gwent, South Wales and British Transport Police in what Supt Ian John called a “forensic deep search”. One police officer said: “You just don’t want to give up, we’ve been told to rest but you just want to keep going.” Specialist underwater teams have been searching in nearby quarries and potholes while police dog teams continued to scour the same valley. A single caravan that stands in woods just outside the village has been cordoned off with police tape for several days. Investigators said it “is one of a number of search areas in and around Machynlleth”. Supt John said of the officers: “We have almost
got to send them home because they are tired they need to have rest so that they can come back. But they just don’t want to go home; their commitment to finding April is just astounding.” He also confirmed that April’s family had visited the search teams and thanked them for their efforts. Supt John said: “It is very touching and heart-warming and I can reassure everybody we are completely motivated and focused on what we have got to do.” Bridger, 46, is charged with April’s murder and abduction and attempting to pervert the course of justice. He was been remanded in custody until January 11. On his first court appearance
the 46-year-old stood in the dock at Aberystwyth Magistrates Court on Monday morning where he was charged. As well as abducting and murdering April, Bridger is charged with the unlawful disposal and concealment of her body with intent to pervert the course of justice. Bridger was in tears as he spoke to confirm his name, age and address. He also confirmed he understood the charges.
Silent March
Hundreds gathered in the town on Sunday for a silent march, followed by a special church service in remembrance of the youngster. Her mother, Coral, posted on Facebook: “April has still
not been found, I am not giving up hope that she will come home, so please keep looking for my baby girl April, she’s our world, the whole family are in bits as we don’t know where she is. The special Sunday service was held at St Peter’s Church in Machynlleth in remembrance of missing April Jones. The fiveyear-old, who suffers from cerebral palsy, disappeared while playing near her home in the town. A procession of more than 700 people, many wearing pink ribbons symbolising their faith that April is alive, walked slowly through the Welsh town towards the church. Hundreds gathered at the Bryn-y-Gog estate from where April was abducted. Reverend Kathleen Rogers opened the service, offering prayers for April’s parents Coral, 40, and Paul, 44, who did not attend the ceremony. She said: “We cannot bring little April, our sweet and innocent little girl, home as we had hoped. But our hope has now been moved on to sure and certain hope that she is in the arms of Jesus. “Coral and Paul may not be with us this morning, but we hold them very close in our hearts as we pray for them. There are
hundreds of people today searching our town, our countryside, our river. Many hundreds more have been searching this last week. We thank them and we pray for them as they came to us in our hour of need and they continue to be with us. There was a moment of silence before the congregation sang the Welsh hymn Morning Has Broken and Reverend Rogers read a touching poem on behalf of April’s mother called “Mum”. The Bishop of Bangor, the Right Reverend Andrew John, led the prayers. He said: “It’s all designed to understand and make sense of what’s happening, give an outlet for anguish, for grief, but at the same time collect people together and provide a focus for continued hope - that’s our main aim. “We are going to use pink. There will be a book of hope, which has prayers and thoughts all for April that will be processed down the church and placed on the altar. A pink candle,
her favourite colour, will be lit.” There have been daily vigils at the church. “It does give them lots of strength, we hope it does anyway. It’s certainly helping us, it’s testing our faith isn’t it, but it’s bringing a lot of people into the church,” said Joyce Price, a church warden. “We were hoping there would be a conclusion today, but there still isn’t. We’re just hoping and praying hard, and can’t imagine what her parents are going through.” At the Dfyi Bridge, on the road out of town, water search units took to the river again where levels dropped by around a foot overnight. The search is now focused downriver from Machynlleth. Two underwater cameras were mounted on poles to scour the deeper parts of the River Dfyi. Ian Marshall and his search dog Barra travelled from Loch Lomond to help. “This is such an important thing to do now. We have to find April wherever she is. My heart goes out to the family,” he said.

Teenager Imprisoned By Parents
M
itc h Comer, an 18-year-old allegedly confined to his room by his parents for several years was so malnourished he still had his baby teeth, police have told a court. Standing at just 5ft, 1in (1.77 metres) tall and weighing only 40kg when he raised the suspicions of a guard at a bus station in Los Angeles last month.
He told police he had been put on a bus by his stepfather Paul Comer on his 18th birthday with a few hundred dollars cash and a list of homeless shelters. Paul Comer told investigators his stepson went to Los Angeles because he wanted to be an actor. The Georgia teenager said he had been confined to a bedroom and bathroom since being taken out of school several years earlier. His sisters, aged 11 and 13, lived in the same house
but had no contact with him throughout that time. They thought he had brown hair but never saw him, Paulding County Sheriff’s Detective Kyle Shelton said as he gave evidence about his interviews with the family. “He screamed for food and screamed to go to the bathroom. That’s all the sisters know of their brother,” he said. Detective Kevin Morgan testified that the Comers conceded the teenager had been confined to the room as punishment. The rest of the house was filthy, the detectives reported, but the bathroom was clean. Mitch Comer told them he cleaned it often to escape boredom. He was held there for a year before being moved to an adjoining bedroom, where the door was blocked by a fridge. When asked why he did not escape through a window, Shelton said, the teenager replied: “I’m afraid of bugs.” Mitch Comer also told investigators he was fed infrequently, occasionally getting soup or cereal. He was extremely pale,
having seen virtually no sunlight, small and still had his baby teeth - the result of malnourishment, Mr Morgan said. “I thought he was a 12-year-old boy,” he added. Prosecutor Tom Cole called the alleged abuse “one of the most vile and reprehensible acts that the state has seen in a long time”. However, the teenager’s mother and stepfather dispute many of the allegations. Paul Comer has said he fed Mitch Comer the same food the family ate, three times a day. He
Human Scarecrow
A
graduate has found a job with a difference - working as a human scarecrow. Real-life Worzel Gummidge, 22-year-old Jamie Fox spends his days sitting, reading and strumming his ukulele. But he leaps into action when birds begin to circle, scaring them with his bright orange coat, accordion and cow bell. Mr Fox, who studied music and English at Bangor University, is halfway through a fortnight-long stint scaring partridges from a field of oilseed rape near Aylsham, Norfolk.
He enjoys being out in the fresh air and, while some friends are bemused by his new job, others are envious. He said: “I get to sit and read for a lot of the time, but whenever the partridges appear I have to get up and
scare them off. I ring a cowbell and I’ve even played the accordion, but the ukulele doesn’t seem to have any effect on them.” Mr Fox, who lives in Aylsham, earns £250 a week for his efforts policing the 10-acre field for eight hours a day. He is saving for a planned trip to New Zealand next year. “I don’t want to be a scarecrow forever, but it is giving me time to decide what I will do with my future,” he said. Worzel Gummidge was a loveable, if dishevelled scarecrow that came to life on Scatterbrook Farm in a 1979-81 television series of the same name. But he was a hopeless scarecrow as he spent most of his time trying to woo a fairground doll called Aunt Sally instead of scaring crows. Farmer William Youngs employed Mr Fox because conventional birdscarers had not worked. He said: “We have tried bangers to scare them off but the partridges always return. Jamie’s doing a good job. You can really see the difference.”
also told investigators that he sometimes encouraged his stepson to go outside, but that he declined. Sheila Comer’s lawyer said there was no evidence a large appliance like a refrigerator had ever blocked the door to the bedroom because there was no indentation in the carpet. She also said the window opened easily. At the hearing, the pair was denied bail while authorities investigated why the family had lived at 15 addresses across five states since the late 1990s.

new Mini Dinosaur
a
nEW species of mini dinosaur has been confirmed by researchers at the University of Chicago. It has been named ‘Pegomastax a f r i c a n u s ’ meaning ‘thick jaw from africa’. Palaeontologist Paul sereno said he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. “My eyes popped, as it was clear this was a new species,” he said. The creature is so small it has taken decades to identity. The discovery was originally made in 1983 from a specimen found in a slab of red rock found in southern
Africa in the 1960s. Its size made Mr Sereno think whether “anyone else might spot the creature hiding among the lab d r awe r s ” . P e g o m a s t a x were the most advanced plant eaters of their day,” according to Sereno in his report published in the journal ZooKeys. They most likely spent their time scurrying about looking for food. Pegomastax measures less than two feet (61cm) long and weighed less than a cat. It has been described as a cross between a bird, a porcupine and a vampire because of its fangs and blunt beak. The creature belongs to a class of small herbivores called heterodontosaurus and lived around 200 million years ago.

Fresh allegations against Jimmy savile
J
IMMy savile had keys to a high-security h o s p i t a l where he worked as a volunteer and has been accused of carrying out abuse. The Tv presenter helped out at Broadmoor, in Crowthorne, Berkshire, from the 1960s and would have been able to access patients’ rooms.
One victim claimed the Jim’ll Fix It star shoved his hand up her nightdress after walking in on a group of girls watching televisionA statement from West London Mental Health NHS Trust, which now runs Broadmoor, said the allegations related to a time when it was run as a separate organisation. It added that procedures and protocols, including security arrangements, have changed significantly in the last decade. It said: “We have not been approached by police or by any former patients or their representatives with any allegations of abuse by the late Jimmy Savile.”If we are contacted by the police we will of course co-operate with any investigation involving
the hospital. A Department of Health spokesman said: “These are extremely disturbing allegations and we would expect any part of the NHS that is involved to co-operate fully with any investigation.” It comes after three police forces confirmed fresh allegations had been made against Savile. North Yorkshire Police said it had forwarded a claim of abuse from the 1980s in Scarborough to the Metropolitan Police, while Tayside Police reported another claim about an historical incident in Liverpool. Lancashire Police said it had received two allegations. One concerned a girl then aged 14 in the 1960s in West Yorkshire; the other was about a 15-year-old girl in the 1980s in Bedfordshire. Earlier this week, Savile’s gravestone was been broken up and dumped after being removed from a cemetery in Scarborough as more sexual abuse claims emerged. Scotland Yard says up to 25 young girls were allegedly targeted
by the late television star over a period dating back to 1959. His family said it took
the decided to remove his headstone, as a mark of respect to others
buried in the cemetery. It had only been in place for three weeks. “We are deeply aware of the impact that the stone remaining there could have on the dignity and sanctity of the cemetery,” a statement released on behalf of the family said. “Out of respect to public opinion, to those who are buried there, and to those who tend their graves and visit there, we have decided to remove it.” The elaborate tombstone, engraved with the words, “It Was Good While It Lasted”, was taken to a stonemason’s yard in Leeds where the inscription will be ground down. It will then be broken up and sent to landfill. The grave, in which Savile was buried at an angle so he could “see” Scarborough Castle and the sea, will remain unmarked. A number of memorials to Sir Jimmy have also been removed, including an inscription on the wall at Leeds Civic Hall in recognition of his charity work, and a street sign in Scarborough,
North Yorkshire. A plaque outside his home has already been defaced. olice are investigating up to 120 leads covering the last 50 years. Scores of sexual abuse claims against Sir Jimmy have been made to the police and the NSPCC charity in recent days. Commander Peter Spindler, head of specialist crime investigations at Scotland Yard, said the allegations cover over four decades, and suggests abuse was on a “national scale”. “At this stage it is quite clear from what women are telling us that Savile was a predatory sex offender,” he said. Police have so far recorded two allegations of rape and six allegations of indecent assault against the former Top of the Pops presenter. The youngest victim was 13 at the time of the alleged attack. Prime Minister David Cameron has hinted that Sir Jimmy could be posthumously stripped of his knighthood. However, the move would require a change in the law as technically when the former DJ died last year the honour

ceased to exist. There have also been calls for Savile to have his papal knighthood removed although as for the civil order it also ceases to exist after death. He was awarded this in 1990, the same year as he was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. A spokesperson for the Catholic Church in England and Wales told Sky News: “If the allegations prove to be true and the Church had known about it at the time, the papal knighthood would not have been awarded.” he BBC has said it will hold its own enquiry into allegations of sexual abuse against Sir Jimmy Savile, but only after Police have finished their criminal investigation. Speaking on Radio 4 Today programme, George Entwistle said he would like to “apologise on behalf of the organisation” in the wake of the allegations of sexual abuse against the former DJ and star of Jim’ll Fix It. He said the women involved had “gone through something awful”, which he “deeply regrets”.

The Future? Double O Liquid air Car heaven
C
ars, homes and factories could be powered using the air we breathe in the future, according to engineers at a special summit. British scientists who are developing the technology say normal air can be used to store energy by cooling it to -190C, turning it into a liquid. When the liquid air is later warmed, it expands into a gas, creating high pressure that can drive the piston engine of a car, or generate electricity in a turbine. Dr Tim Fox, of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, which has organised the summit of experts, said: “We’re coming out of the cave blinking on this one and we’re only just getting an inkling of how great the energy storage benefits of liquid air could be.”
One company, Highview Power Storage, has built a pilot plant next to a power station in Slough to prove that it actually works. At times of low demand for electricity, the plant uses the excess energy from the power station to suck air through refrigeratorstyle compressors turning
it into a liquid, which it then stores in an insulated tank. When consumer demand is raised, the energy is returned to the national grid. The tank, which stores 60 tons of liquid air, can power 6,000 homes for one hour. The company’s chief executive officer Gareth Brett says that the technology is far cheaper than storing energy in batteries. “The trouble with batteries is they are best suited to small applications like your laptop,” he said. What we are talking about here is the national grid, which requires very large amounts of electricity to be stored. There are relatively few ways of doing that and we think with liquid air we have found one of the few technologies that is truly scalable to grid scale usage.” The technology could make wind turbines more viable, by storing excess production at high wind speeds, releasing it again in calm weather, he said. Research by Imperial College suggests energy
storage could reduce the number of power stations and national grid infrastructure needed, saving £10bn. Engineering firm Ricardo is also developing a car engine fuelled by liquid air, based on a prototype built by inventor Peter Dearman. Using a beer keg to store the liquid and copper pipes from a DIY store, he generated enough power to drive his Vauxhall Nova. “I’ve probably done 35mph. It probably would go faster but I haven’t taken it out on the open road, so I’ve been limited on space,” he said. He said a liquid air car would overcome some of the problems with electric cars, which are expensive, use scarce materials in their batteries and are best suited to short distances. “It’s not the range of the electric car that is the problem, it’s the recharging,” he said. “With liquid air you have the convenience of the petrol engine in that you can refill it quickly, simply by pouring it into the tank.”

Florida Car Finally hamza in Us Court Pile up JUsT one day after being extradited to the Usa, abu hamza appeared in a new york court on terror charges, but the radical cleric did not enter a plea.
DOZEns of people were injured, but no one killed, in a series of pile-ups on Interstate 75 along Florida’s Gulf Coast. The Florida highway Patrol said 52 people were hurt in 12 separate crashes involving 47 vehicles on southbound
Interstate 75. Twentytwo people were taken to hospital, including two people who were critically injured, although their injuries were not considered lifethreatening. The collisions occurred last Friday afternoon near
the border of Sarasota and Manatee counties. A stretch of southbound I-75 was closed for six hours as the scene was cleared. Authorities attributed the collisions to heavy rain and driver error, including motorists travelling too fast given the poor weather conditions.
An aircraft carrying the 54-year-old touched down in the United States earlier on Saturday after he lost a High Court bid to remain in the UK on Friday. Hamza is accused of attempting to set up a terrorist training camp in Oregon and of involvement in the abducting of 16 hostages in Yemen in 1998. He also faces charges of advocating a violent jihad in Afghanistan in 2001. The former imam of Finsbury Park mosque in London arrived in court without the hook he uses as a hand, and complained through his lawyer that he wanted it back. Hamza, who was jailed in the UK for seven years for soliciting murder
and inciting racial hatred in 2006, first faced an extradition request from the Americans in 2004. Four other men - Khaled al Fawwaz, Adel Abdul Bary, Syed Ahsan and Babar Ahmad, who also had lastditch extradition challenges thrown out in London, pleaded not guilty to other terror charges. Ahmad, a computer expert from south London, and Ahsan are accused of offences including using a website to provide support to terrorists and conspiracy to kill, kidnap, maim or injure persons or damage
property in a foreign country. They appeared in a court in New Haven, Connecticut. Bary and al Fawwaz were allegedly involved in, or supported, the bombing of US embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam in 1998. They appeared alongside Hamza in New York. On Friday, UK High Court Judge Sir John Thomas ruled that all five men could be extradited immediately to the US to answer the charges. US Attorney Preet Bharara called the extraditions “a watershed moment”.

Out Of Control I Miss My Boyfriend Daughter
I have a 15-year-old daughter who is spiralling out of control. She’s taking drugs, drinking, self harming and is always running away from home. She’s even tried to commit suicide on one occasion. I’m so scared and worried for her. I’m dreading that awful phone call telling us our daughter is dead. Pam, 36
All teenagers go off the rails at some point sweetheart, some more than others. As a parent, you have no choice but to try to get through this! Right now, I would imagine that the lines of communication between you and your daughter are non existent so that’s your starting point. Somehow, even though she’s
breaking your heart, you’ve got to make sure she knows you love her no matter what. The self harming may be a cry for help and attention but could also be a part of something bigger. Trying to back away from confrontations and lay the foundations for open and honest conversation is the only thing you can do for the time being. You’ve almost got to get to know your child all over again with the added pressure that she seems hell bent on rebelling against anything and everything. Unfortunately, there’s no quick fix and there are no guarantees that you’ll be able to turn this around but going by the people I’ve spoken to over the years with very similar stories, I can assure that things can and do get better. The more you manage to talk without it turning into a screaming match, the more your daughter will open up to you and hopefully give you the opportunity to help her through this nightmare.
hate My Body I hate my body with a passion. I have a really hairy body, it’s worst on my arms, and even my face. At school I was always teased about this and called horrible names like ‘Yeti’. I’m 27 now, but am still so selfconscious. I wear long sleeve t-shirts and could never let anyone see me without clothes on. How can I get over my obsession? Fran, 27 Given the fact you were picked on at school over this, its hardly surprising that your misery has continued on into adulthood. Having such a low opinion of yourself can have an immense impact on almost every area of your life so rather than worrying about it until the cows come home, you’ve got to face it head on! Speak to your GP and ask if there is anything that can be done for
you medically. Modern medicine has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years and, at the very least, you will be able to gain an understanding of why you are so hairy. Hormones, lifestyle and diet affect the body directly and a few simple changes could well be the turning point for you. Of course there’s two sides to this problem and possibly the hardest to deal with is how you actually feel about yourself. Speaking to the doctor will certainly give you hope but you may also benefit from talking to a therapist and working to help you change your view of yourself. All I can tell you is that you can get through this provided you make the decision to fight it rather than let it cast a dark shadow over you forevermore. Good luck.
I broke up with my boyfriend 3 months ago and it’s been really difficult. I miss him so much and want him back desperately. We live in quite a small town and whenever my friends and I go out in the evenings I see him. It kills me inside, even though he doesn’t seem to care. It’s making me want to stay at home at the weekends even though that makes me even more miserable. Help! Alice
Think back to the reasons why it ended with this bloke Alice. One way to remind yourself is to write down all the things you hated about him on post-it notes and stick them to your fridge.
Every time you feel a moment of weakness coming on, go to the fridge and remind yourself why you’re better off without him. You need to concentrate on loving yourself a little more rather than looking back on what you had. I know it isn’t easy, especially when you see him all the time but the truth is, you need to get through this. Facing reality isn’t always easy but, it’s the only way to live your life, trust me on that. Its an old cliché but its spot on Alice, time is a healer! Hang in there and eventually, you’ll start to smile once again.
Partners Other child
I’ve been with my partner for 16 years now and we’ve got five daughters together. A year into our relationship he told me he wanted a break and got another women pregnant. He didn’t want the baby, so she told him to leave, and he came back to me. We know she had a little girl. He has just announced he wants to get back in touch with them but I’m worried that it’s going to tear us apart. Kath 35
So after 16 years this guy is finally prepared to take responsibility for his daughter? I’m sorry, this entire situation sounds quite bizarre to me. Sure, people make mistakes and the fact you two had some trouble early on is neither here nor there but it amazes me that neither of you have spared a thought for this poor kid in fifteen years! How would you feel if any one of your five girls had been denied a father for so long? It would be a crying shame if you let your concerns get in the way this time, don’t you see that? You’ve got to encourage your husband and
support him through this. If you don’t trust him you shouldn’t have taken him back all those years ago should you? This is unfinished business that has to be faced and dealt with. Provided you both talk things through and agree how this is going to work, you should be able to minimise the worry on your side. What you mustn’t do, at any cost, is try to come between a father and his child, especially as it’s taken him so long to decide to do the right thing.

Grandma’s Cheese Pudding
Ok, I’m going to re live my youth a bit now... When I was younger, my Nan always used to make this for us. It was always a special Friday night treat. In fact, when I was doing my exams at school, I had to do a practical exam in Home Economics! Yes Home Economics - remember it? But I had a problem. I went to a Jewish School in Liverpool. Although I am not Jewish myself, we were banned from using any kind of meat in the kitchen class room as it was a ‘Kosher Kitchen’ so I was very limited to what I could cook. The Jewish pupils, however, were used to this from home so it wasn’t an issue for them. My Nan gave me this recipe and I watched her several Fridays before my exam. I passed it with flying colours! Here’s that special recipe:
Ingredients
1.1 litres (2 pints) milk 125 g fresh breadcrumbs 450 g cheddar cheese, grated 8 eggs 5 ml (1 tsp) French mustard salt and freshly ground pepper
Method
1. Bring the milk to the boil in a saucepan. Put the breadcrumbs into a bowl and pour the milk over. stir in the cheese. 2. In a bowl, lightly beat the eggs with the mustard and with the milk and breadcrumbs. season. 3. Butter a large, shallow 2.8
litre (5 pint) ovenproof dish well and pour in the cheese pudding mixture. Bake in the oven at 180°C (350°F) mark 4 for about 45 minutes, until lightly set and golden. 4. serve immediately with a mixed salad
Tips/hints
Why not put some broccoli, cauliflower or shredded ham in the bottom of the pudding basin Try different cheeses, to get your favourite flavour sprinkle a little extra cheese on top for the crispy cheese topping! not too much otherwise it won’t rise and it will become soggy!

Sharples in Session By John Sharples
Something Funny Please Easy Come, Easy Go!
When I was a kid, I loved watching the TV. I loved the talent shows like Opportunity Knocks, Search for a Star and New Faces. These shows created many stars that are still around today. They really made people famous and in some cases rich. The beauty
of the old talent shows was that they weren’t just looking for singers;
they were looking for any talent, anything at all.
People like Lenny Henry, Marti Caine and Les Dawson all started their careers on these shows. Considering that Britain’s got Talent is so popular, doesn’t it strike you as odd that apart from singers, nobody has become famous from it. Where are the comedians? Don’t people want to laugh anymore?
It was a lovely day, so I decided to go out for a ride on my bicycle through La Orotava and down to Puerto de la Cruz. It’s a beautiful area and the sights are free, well they are usually.
I put my money in my pocket to pay the car insurance and set off.
When I got down to Puerto, the money had gone. It had fallen out of my pocket whilst I was on the bike. It wasn’t a small amount either, it was 250 euros. Obviously I was gutted. Anybody would be. I just hope that the person that found it and picked it up really needed it and enjoyed it. No use crying over spilt milk.
Price Jimmy Savile Watching Until fuel prices went up over the last couple of years, I have never chosen a garage because the petrol was cheaper. Since I moved to the north and work in the south, I am driving approximately 1,000 kilometres a week. I now pick a garage where the prices are lower. I went to one on the TF5. The price for a litre of 95 octane fuel was 1.10 euros. I asked for 20 euros worth and he filled her up. I looked at the pump and saw that the price displayed on the pump was 1.14 euros a litre. I told the guy that it was 4 cents dearer on the pump than it was on the road sign. He said that they had changed the price boards ready for tomorrow. I told him that it was illegal to display one price and charge another and that I wasn’t paying it. He said that I had to
pay it. I threatened to call the local Police and asked for a complaint form and told him that I would pursue the issue. The petrol companies and government are already robbing people as it is. I had only gone to that garage because the price displayed was so good. The manager came out eventually and apologised. He gave me my 40 cents back. Make sure that you check the price per litre on the pump when they start to serve you and don’t be afraid to argue the point. If they conned every driver in the same way, they would make a fortune. As I drive around the Island, I find myself looking at the various fuel prices at the filling stations. In one day I saw octane 95 for 1.10 euros in one place and when I arrived at Las Americas I saw the same fuel, from the same company for 1.36 a litre. Something is definitely not right somewhere!
It’s alright Esther Rantzen, Paul Gambaccini and Janet Street Porter coming forward now and saying that there were rumours about Jimmy Savile back in the 1970’s, but why didn’t they sound off back then. They say that nobody would have listened at the BBC and nothing would have been done about it. Erm, excuse me, but what about the “Social Services”. What about the police service. As far as I am concerned they are as guilty as hell for not doing something about it when they heard about it or when they suspected or even in the last 20 years. What possible use could saying something now serve. As for the poor alleged victims, I wish just one
of them had come forward and enabled a case against the man. This would surely have dragged a few more of them out of hiding. Now that he’s dead, there isn’t a lot of point about doing anything. If he did do these things and if there is a God, he will be burning in hell. That
Where’ve You Bin A man from Aberdeen had to be rescued by firemen from a city centre rubbish bin. William Middleton said he dropped his hat in the bin while throwing away some rubbish. He said that he was trying to get his hat back
when he got his head stuck. His rescue took place in front of onlookers who gave him the nickname, “Bucket Head” William; aged 53 said “It was shocking... I was stuck for about 20 minutes.
is the only consolation that any of his poor alleged victims can ever have. It certainly looks like a lot for celebrities may be involved and if they are and they are alive, I look forward with great anticipation, to their fall from grace.
It was stinking. I’m now known as Bucket Head,” Mr Middleton’s accident was photographed by a bystander and was soon on Facebook and Twitter. Someone called 999 and within minute’s police,
paramedics and fire crews with cutting equipment were on the scene. Many people expressed their sympathy for him by leaving hundreds of messages on Facebook. But Mr Middleton’s friends saw the funny side. One friend- who did not want to be named said: “I walked around the corner and saw his walking stick on the ground and his bum sticking out and said ‘that’s Willie’. Me and my friends tried to pull him out but his ears were stuck.”

JUStin QUinn in the Spotlight By Barry Sparkle
Justin Quinn started out entertaining just over 4 years ago but. It wasn’t until May of last year that he came out to see his friends over here in Tenerife that he decided to give up his business in the UK and come over and start a new life in the sun. Working as a waiter and barman in his friend’s restaurant in Los Cristianos, he got to see the best entertainment that the island had to offer and that gave him the buzz again to get pro-active in the entertainment world once more. Working in different areas on the island as a compere now and singing from time to time with guitarist ´Showbiz Ollie´ as well as thinking about writing new unique shows, Justin is still trying to discover where he fits in but is having a whale of a time finding out.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM? From a little city called Ripon in North Yorkshire WHEN AND WHY DID YOU MOVE TO TENERIFE? I was in a rut. Then I came on holiday to see my friends who have a restaurant here, a few pints later and I’d decided to move out here for good. Thanks for the push Eddie and Ali. I moved out here for good in June last year. WHEN’S YOUR BIRTHDAY? The 16th of Feb, I usually get joint valentine and birthday cards. It saves on paper so I’m doing my bit for the environment. DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE FAMOUS? Not for the right reasons. I recently did an advert for a holiday company where I had to dress up in an 80´s style wig and white speedos. I´m going into hiding when that hits the TV. ALTHOUGH YOU ARE IN THE LIMELIGHT, DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE SHY? I am very shy when I’m sober. I believe a lot of entertainers are. When you have to give it your all on a night I think it´s nice to curl up in a ball the rest of the time to recharge ready for the next outburst. IF YOU HAD A DIFFERENT JOB, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I wouldn´t mind stepping in as prime minister in the UK. I would
bring back common sense and introduce a tax for stupidity. WHO AND WHY IS YOUR IDOL? I have many idols. Those who stand up for what they believed to be unjust. Those who stand up for peace in the world and those who use their art to enlighten others. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST DISASTER YOU HAVE EVER HAD ON STAGE? Has to be singing Monty Python’s “always look on the Brightside of life” just after England were knocked out of this year’s football cup. Didn’t go down too well. Made Shiel Campbell chuckle though. WHAT IS YOUR TIPPLE? I’m an alcohol chameleon. Southern comfort and Guinness are my top two. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SPORT? I love being on a jet ski. Although I usually can´t walk straight for 2 days afterwards. HOW MANY LANGUAGES DO YOU SPEAK? I’m fluent in English, Spanglish and I speak a little American. HOW MANY HOUSES DO YOU HAVE? I don´t own any property and don´t think I will. Too stressful and grown up for me. WHAT TIME DO YOU GET UP IN THE MORNING? 9am most mornings as I have a day job working for my friends. HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU
EARN IN A MONTH? It varies but I’m happy as long as I have enough to put a roof over my head and food in my belly. HOW MUCH MONEY WOULD YOU LIKE TO EARN IN A MONTH? As much as possible but I wouldn´t sacrifice my health for money. WHAT DO YOU SPEND YOUR MONEY ON? Food, drink and experiences. I prefer memories to materials. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first job outside of school was as a ride operator at Lightwater Valley in North Yorkshire. DO YOU DO CHARITY WORK? I have offered my services before in the U.K. for local causes and the Yorkshire air ambulance. I would like to get involved over here but it´s hard finding the time at the moment. WHY DID YOU BECOME AN ENTERTAINER? I spent many years hounding karaoke djs in my home town. Taking over the pub most night. I finally decided to get off my backside and try and take myself seriously when I hit the big 30. I’m still trying to take myself seriously but it’s hard to do. DO YOU HAVE A PRIVATE PLANE? The closest thing I’ve had to a plane is a poster of Jet from the Gladiators when I was a teenager. DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS? I’d love to have a dog but it would be selfish to do so as I don´t have enough time on my hand to look after one. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? I like to spend time at the beach or just go out walking with my iPod. You get some funny looks when you´re singing along to foo fighters. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD? I love fish and chips. If I’m ever walking past the patch on a night, I simply can´t walk past The Palms chippy without going in. I’m sure they have a tractor beam pulling me in. WOULD YOU EVER GO “BACK HOME” I go through phases where I get home sick and nearly end up going but then I think about the weather and soon snap out of it. I think I just need to bring the best people from back home out here instead. WHERE WAS YOUR LAST HOLIDAY Before here it was Magaluf. I could tell you some of the most bizarre stories from there but I’m sworn to secrecy. TELL US A SECRET ABOUT YOU! I do the strangest things in my
sleep. I’ve woken up before having logged into Facebook in my sleep. DO YOU ENJOY YOUR CELEBRITY STATUS? Ha! I wouldn´t say celebrity. It´s pretty cool though when you go into a bar and someone gives you a shout out on the Microphone. DO YOU WEAR BOXERS OR BRIEFS? Boxers all the way, occasionally commando. IF YOU WERE A BISCUIT, WHICH WOULD YOU BE? A jammie dodger. Because things always have a way of working out for me in the end. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO EAT? When I get a night off I like to go to Restaurante Margarita for a Mixed grill from their BBQ. I’m not saying this because I work there during the day. I love the food, drinks and the entertainment. NAME ONE ACTOR/ACTRESS YOU WOULD LOVE TO GET NAUGHTY WITH? Just one? Scarlett Johannson has a naughty look about here, wouldn’t mind finding out. WERE YOU BULLIED AS A KID? I was bullied at a young age but it helped me to develop a quick tongue. I’m always ready with a comeback if someone tries to insult me. A good skill to have in the business. IF YOU WERE GIVEN A CHANCE, WOULD YOU ENTER BIG BROTHER? I would rather stick a fork in my eye. WOMEN OR CARS?
Women all the way. I have no passion for cars. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE THE MOST DESIRABLE MAN/WOMAN ON THE EARTH? I don’t have a clue. I’ll ask him next time I see him. IF I CAME TO YOUR HOME AND LOOKED INSIDE THE FRIDGE, WHAT WOULD I FIND? Anything that I can put inside a tortilla wrap. WHAT’S YOUR BAD QUALITY? Lack of self confidence and motivation. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS? Witty, random and funny. WHAT MAKES YOU ANGRY? Hate. Especially when it involves race or religion. WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE DO YOU DISLIKE? Sheeple. I don’t necessarily dislike them. I just wish some people would be a bit more open minded and not just believe everything they hear and follow what everyone else does like sheep. We all have a brain and need to think for ourselves. IF I GIVE YOU ONE MILLION EUROS HOW WOULD YOU SPEND IT? I’d like to buy a boat and live on it and call it the HMS Quinvincible. WHAT’S THE MOST EMBARRASSING SITUATION YOU HAVE BEEN IN? When I went to do a lunge on stage and my pants ripped apart. Luckily I had some underwear thrown at me so I put them over my trousers just like a superhero would do to help cover my modesty.

Personal Thanks I know it’s a little belated but I’d just like to say a huge thank you to everyone out there who voted for me at the 6th annual Tenerife Entertainment awards 2012. I am honoured to have so much support out there, this is my 6th nomination and 4th win, but what makes it even more special is it’s my 1st solo nomination and win! Last year myself and Shiel Campbell as “The Wildboyz” lost out to “I.S. and Mikey Mike” although there was no shame in that as they were brilliant on the day, but I still felt like a winner as on that night I proposed to my now wife Becky,
(obviously she said yes!) so this year, no way expecting to win as the category had 3 phenomenal talents, I was consoling myself even before the winner was announced by thinking about the amazing week we’d had celebrating our blessing with friends and family from all over the world....so much so that when my name was called it didn’t register for a few seconds! So once again thanks - I’ve met some of my closest friends in audiences watching me sing over the last 13 years here in Tenerife and I’m proud to perform on this beautiful island full of such great talent!!
Fix Factor?
Controversy once again surrounds ITV’s hit talent show “The X Factor” after veteran judge Louis Walsh seemed to change his decision about who he wanted to keep on last Sunday’s live show. Gary Barlow’s girl, Caroline Poole, and Nicole Scherzinger’s ‘boy?’ Rylan Clark, were left to battle it out in the sing off and, upon being left with the deciding vote, Louis clearly stated he wanted to keep Caroline then, only seconds later appeared to change his mind and sent the vote to “deadlock” which Poole lost with less public support. Later photos appeared online of an executive
producer whispering in Louis’s ear, seconds before the judge’s decision. After the result was announced, Caroline’s mentor Gary, stormed off the set and later called the decision “a joke”, however during ITV2’s “Extra Factor”, a caller hinted that Barlow’s outrage was hypocritical as last year he was fully supportive of his own act Frankie Cocozza who “couldn’t sing either”!! Twitter was buzzing with reactions including celebrity tweeters Coleen Nolan and Cocozza himself branding the show “a fix”. So what do you think? Bring back Simon Cowell that’s what I say; he’d sort it all out!!
M m m m my pukey face!!
Lady Gaga gave her Barcelona fans a” solid” performance on saturday 6th October; in fact the solids were projectile and exiting her stomach whilst performing onstage!! On tour with h e r “Born This Way B a l l ” , the superstar had to turn away from the audience m i d w a y through her hit “Edge of Glory”, s t o o d b e h i n d one of her dancers and threw up repeatedly but refused to stop the show. Sources were not available to comment on whether carrots were involved but let’s be honest they usually are (even when you haven’t eaten them!). I’ve never had the bad fortune to feel the need to vomit during a song-I’ve come close in my “Wild boy” days but it was usually Jaeger bomb related!!! Gaga luckily saw the funny side and later twIttered a video link to “Lady Pukega’s swan vomit lake”!!! Going to lie down now..... feeling a bit queasy!!
Charlize gets a chubby!!
They have to be hollywood’s most unlikely couple since...well I can’t even think of any, but south african stunner Charlize Theron is dating “Modern Family” funny man Eric stonestreet. Eric, who plays gay dad “Cameron Tucker” in the hit sitcom, was Introduced to the model- turned actress by a mutual friend and sources close to the actress say things blossomed into romance very soon after. I don’t know what’s more surprising, the fact that Stonestreet is really straight (what a great actor!) or that he’s managed to woo one of Hollywood’s most desirable women! Well done Eric, if I wasn’t a VERY happily married man I’d be trying to gain 3 stone and heading for L.A.!!

Bar 180C 6 V 4 Fosters In an enthralling match, Fosters raced into a 3-1 lead then a 4-3 lead - Bar180s comeback was complete after the half time steak pie, and Robin 7 balling Bradley. Red Pride 4 V 6 Leones B Another, thoroughly enjoyable evening at The Red Lion. Jenny our Vice-Captain was once again at the reins and demonstrating that Dad has left the team in good hands; won both of her singles matches (Spike will be proud). Ian won both of his singles matches and finished his doubles with a stunning shot on the black but called “foul” after an errant finger touched a red as he took the final shot. A true sportsman he called the foul himself before the ref. Simon’s “black ball curse” persisted for a second week during his first singles match and things went downhill from there. Man of the match was definitely young Zac who after a close fought match with Simon in his first frame kept his cool for a perfect score. Lupain 6 V 4 Grandee O Donnells Lupain bounced back with a welldeserved victory over Grandee O’Donnell’s , first four singles shared, Lupain winning first pairs game, with Victor & Frank, Ben & Dave won the second pairs after a very tough game against Mike & Eddie. Dave clinching victory with just the blackball left to pot for O’Donnell’s. first of the final four singles was won by Andy for the away team, Lupain then fought back to win the next two singles to go 5 x 4 ahead, draw looking on the cards with the good form of Andy but after a thrilling and very tense game captain Mike raised his game to seal victory for Lupain. Victor for Lupain was man of the match after winning all his three games. Barracuda Bandits 6 V 4 Summerland Elite A very tight match. Bandits were 3 - 1
down after the first singles with Ray full ball snookered 9 times in his match but the Bandits rallied bravely and finally pipped Elite in a tremendous last frame with acting captain John finally potting the black. It seemed a quiet night in some respect with both captains, Jim and Mark missing. A great night played in the right spirit. Tasca A 6 V 4 Clouseaus Diamonds At last Bungalow´s winning run has come to an end, it was Hammers fan Gary who did it, not just once but twice. A bit like waiting hours for a bus and you get two at once. The performance of the night goes to Granddad he did not miss a ball all night. Lowrys 5 V 5 Legendary Jokers Lowry’s shared the points with Legendary Jokers in a tight, closely fought match, with the outcome going right to the final frames. Billed as the West Midlands confrontation, the presence of West Brom, Wolves and Villa fans in the teams added extra spice to the competition. Lowrys went to a 4-2 lead by taking both doubles, but wins from Adam and Tricky pulled the match back to 4 all with 2 to play. Russ, smarting from his defeat in the first frame of the evening took an excellent frame to put Lowrys 5-4 ahead. The usually reliable Rab was left to finish for Lowrys but failed to press home their advantage. In a close frame Alex pulled back the final frame to leave Lowrys with their first draw of the season. Summerland Allstars 2 v 8 Vivo Both teams were short of a key player and with Allstars’ Emma just out of hospital plus Vivo’s Sebastian with “gripe”, (Spanish for man flu!), we were all wondering what to expect, but the Spanish starting contingent for Vivo delivered as usual. After being presented with a free shot on the black, Seb elected to sink both black and cue ball together, very strange choice of shots. Great Goals, Great Pedal Power Comes To Sta Cruz Win, Even A Great
Ref For CD Tenerife
Trams, buses, and cars will all give a clear road to cyclists on Sunday 21st October as the 24th Bike Fiesta returns to Santa Cruz. Racers, mountain bikes, old bone shakers, and kids tricycles will all be saddled up for this celebration convoy, last year 8,000 people took part. The pedal army will gather at Parque Maritimo, next to the Auditorium, for a 10 am start, sticking as close as possible to the coast road they will head out to San Andres before making the return journey for an expected 1 pm finish. Lycra will stretch and leg muscles will ache but fun will be top of the agenda – with or without sideburns. To take part sign up at El Corte Ingles bike department on the 7th floor in Santa Cruz on or before 20th October.
Los Gigantes Hosts Water Skiing Championships
Cresting the waves of Los Gigantes, some of the top ranked performers in Europe will contest the Spanish Water Skiing Championships as they reach their climax this Friday 12 and Saturday 13 October. Veteran Nico Bertels, European junior champion Buby Bertels, and former European champion Neil Coppens are names to look out for but the ladies will
be raising foam as well with Vicky Leyson leading the way. Action on the final days is scheduled from 11 am to 2 pm.
Late Blows Sink CD Marino A little slice of good fortune wouldn’t go amiss for CD Marino, they lost 2-3 at home to Fuenlabrada in the final minute thanks to a goal against a makeshift goalie. A frantic first half saw marino take the lead after 7 minutes through Marchena, the visitors equalized 10 minutes later after a defensive slip by Muni let Pachon through to score. There was more selfinflicted damage after 21 minutes when two defenders couldn’t stop Aquilar from scoring from a free header to give
Fuenlabrada a 1-2 lead. Veteran striker Noah tied the game with barely half an hour gone, his nod in was set up by star man Marchena. Marino, with keeper Alberto saving a penalty, locked the visitors out for the second half but with a minute to go Alberto handled the ball outside his area and a second yellow card meant he was off. German defender Aaron Darias put on the goalie gloves hoping for a very brief ordeal but Ramos nipped in to grab the cruel winner. The search for a first win continues at SS.Reyes this Sunday.
After two stuttering draws CD Tenerife turned on the style for a 1-2 win at Real Madrid C to stay a point clear at the top of Segunda B. What a start, three minutes in Cristo Martin slung the ball in from the left and Loro met it with a well placed header to take the lead. Chechu and Llorente both tested the home keeper, Loro showed his class with a nifty lay off to Chechu and his ball in nearly brought a marker from Aridane. Young and talented, the Madrid kids started to come into the game and left back Llorente’s attacking desires left the gate open and a low pass gave Ramirez an easy finish to level. Chechu and Amado both had chances to restore the Tenerife advantage while at the other end Burgui curled a free kick just over the bar. Loro and Chechu kept the pressure on the Madrid goal after the break and Sergio Aragoneses made
a good tip over save when the home team broke. The winning goal was a peach, Inigo Ros captured a loose ball and had time for a cigarette and a light snack before making a delicate short pass to Chechu out wide, his finish into the bottom corner of the net was equally cool. It was so refreshing to have a ref who let the football be the star rather than his inflated ego. Madrid were still a danger, Llorente redeemed
himself with two good interceptions before Suso came on for another show of pace and aggression. Another sub Nico got his first action of the season and managed to force a save from the home keeper but apart from a scrambled clearance by Sergio, Tenerife looked in control and wrapped up the win to stay unbeaten. This Sunday Atletico Madrid B are the Santa Cruz visitors for a noon kick off.

astro-barilina’s twisted horoscopes Aquarius 20 January - 18 February
You think “pink”, but you buy “blue”. This is why you’re confused a lot of the time. The countries that have issued orders for your arrest will close in on you and cause you to go without clean pants for two days. Love may be in the air for one lucky person - but then again, there’s a lot of Aquarians!
Gemini 21 May - 21 June
Just as small peppers are supposed to be the hottest, there may be a small person who’s ready to heat up your life. Watch out for the seeds though - they can cause problems.
Cancer 22 June - 22 July
Pisces 19 February - 20 March
An email may arrive in your mailbox today informing you that a) You’ve won a competition b) You deserve a massive dong c) Someone in the office loves you.
Aries 21 March - 19 April
Starving yourself does not help you lose weight. In fact, it can be very detrimental to your health. A talk show that you overhear this week is likely to concern principles on which you base your life. Listen closely and they might knock down all those principles.
Taurus 20 April - 20 May
Any satisfaction you had about not having a police record, may be undone this week. This week is like any other, try not to expect too much from this in the next 7 days.
luck upon you.
Spiders have feelings too - an undeniable but ultimately useless fact when the vacuum cleaner strikes! Remember, your action with that vacuum cleaner this week will force bad
Leo 23 July - 22 August
OK, so the stars were pretty much describing a situation where a self-prescribed course of celibacy may help you regain the confidence that is lacking in your love life. After all, being a complete dope and being rejected every other day can’t help the morale much.
Virgo 23 August - 22 September
Shallow puddles may deceive you today. Although similes can often be used as humorous ways to compare something that is funny, you are neither cunning nor weasel like, and it would be best if you left the comedy to the comedians. Any change you receive today will help you feel like someone is contributing to your lifestyle.
Libra 23 September - 23 October Curvy, gorgeous, lascivious...my last 3 “Words of the day” that landed in my inbox. For you they will be associated with nothing. Fun times lie ahead but be wary of those who offer you fun via emails. Scorpio 24 October - 21 November The gift you have that allows you to speak to the animals will be unveiled as a fraud. Don’t watch Doctor Dolittle ever again! Unruly behaviour by your closest friends can be solved using cake-forks. Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December You notice that in films, it is always those opposite-sex characters who are continually angry with each other, who eventually climb into bed and have lots of fun. As tempting as it might be to see if your nemesis is up for a rumble, be aware that nipples don’t grow back if they’re ripped off. Capricorn 22 December - 19 January Nobody can stop you as you make that important break through this week. Your appetite may diminish as you fall into a vat of gravy with no inside ladder. All your problems cannot be solved by putting them in one basket full of eggs.
