Tenerife Weekly - 19th October - 25th October 2012 taking over in Tenerife, as it has with the rest of the world. This time it is the farmers and vineyard owners who are getting it in the neck. Guachinches are tiny little restaurants and bars up in the mountains, often in the owner’s home, where they are able to make a few more Euros selling their produce. However, in so many situations, some of the businesses have gone a touch too far, so now they are all suffering. New laws have been laid down hugely limiting what the farmers are allowed to sell and when. As with so many things these new laws will help to destroy some of the heritage that makes Tenerife such a special island.

Flights by military helicopters over Tenerife continued last weekend and all indications are that it will continue to be cause for curiosity or concern. It has been revealed that the flights are practise runs for the army with a view to working out in Afghanistan. Reports have been confirmed that in May next year they will lead the operation to get Spanish troops out of the country. Although an official spokesman for the command in the Canary Islands had already confirmed the facts, it was a delegate of the

Government of the Canary Islands, María de el Carmen Hernández Bento, who broke the news during a speech on Teide Radio. Residents were called upon to be understanding given the nature of the flights. The helicopters that are flying over Tenerife include the Super Cougar AS-532 Cougar, comparable to high technology machines used by all of the major armies in the world. Most of the flights take place both day and night and all over the Island although a lot of the flights have taken place at night, causing

the most disruption and surprise, especially in busy areas. Such locations are not surprising, since the helicopters are based in Los Rodeos. They are attached to the Famet (helicopter forces in the army) and already have experience in other mission’s abroad including Lebanon. Canary Island command spokesman stated that training included take-off and landing on different types of terrain as well as using night vision, implying that the aircraft turn off their lights as an element of surprise. All of these flights have the blessings of the authorities and that those who carry out these practices are the elite of the Spanish military pilots. However the city of Tacoronte will present a motion asking the Ministry of Defence to immediately cease these night flights at low altitude over populated areas of the municipality by the helicopters.

Make sure you hunt down a guachinche before there are none of the proper ones left. Now that the weather is turning, my birds have decided that now is the perfect time to start nesting! While we wait anxiously to become ‘grand parents’ they are demanding covers so they are protected from the rain, more nesting stuff than you can wave a stick at, and far more food than you would have thought it possible for tiny birds to eat. Apparently Zebra Finch eggs take 14 days to hatch, so they are due any day now. I will keep you posted on my aviary news!

Volcanic Explosion Triggers Researchers at the University of South Hampton say they know what triggers large volcanic explosions on Earth. Tenerife provided the perfect conditions for researchers who focused on the Las Cañadas volcanic caldera, as they set out to try and determine what triggers violent volcanic explosions. Las Cañadas has produced at least eight significant eruptions and these eruptions, have created ash plumes over 25km tall and spewed pyroclastic material over distances of 130km. By examining crystal cumulate nodules found in pyroclastic deposits of large eruptions, the researchers discovered that pre-eruptive mixing of cooler magma and younger hotter magma is the likely trigger in violent volcanic explosions. “These nodules are special

because they were ripped from the magma chamber before becoming completely solid – they were mushy, like balls of coarse wet sand. Rims of crystals in the nodules grew from a very different magma, indicating a major mixing event occurred immediately before eruption. Stirring young hot magma into older, cooler magma appears to be a common event before these explosive eruptions,” said Dr. Rex Taylor, Senior Lecturer in Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton, in a statement. Researchers say that crystal cumulate nodules offer a record of the changes taking placing in the magma chamber. “The analysis of crystal nodules from the volcano documents the final processes and changes immediately prior to eruption – those triggering the catastrophic eruptions. The very presence of mushy nodules in the pyroclastic deposits suggests that the magma chamber empties itself during the eruption,

and the chamber then collapses in on itself forming the caldera,” said co-author Dr. Tom Gernon, Lecturer in Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton, in a statement. The researchers wanted to study the Las Cañadas volcano because of its history of significant, violent eruptions in close proximity to a populated area. Researchers hope that their analysis of this volcano will help officials conduct risk assessments when conducting city planning in regions with active volcanoes that have histories of violent eruptions. “Our findings will prove invaluable in future hazard and risk assessment on Tenerife and elsewhere. The scale of the eruptions we describe has the potential to cause devastation on the heavily populated island of Tenerife and major economic repercussions for the wider European community,” said Dr. Taylor. The findings were recently published in the journal Scientific Reports.

NEWS ON THE ROCK

The ten largest unions in the Canaries agreed yesterday to call a general strike on the islands on November 14th. The decision was confirmed by the secretario general de UGT Canarias, Gustavo Santana, who said that a specifically Canarian strike was chosen “because of the absolute responsibility of the regional Government for its poor economic and political performance over the last few years”. Santana stressed that cuts in the Canaries have been primarily in education, health and social services, and that there was an extremely erratic policy as far as employment was concerned too, not least to combat the black market economy and fiscal fraud. He stressed the unity of the unions in calling the strike, and said that further details of more specific actions would follow over the coming week or so. The horse-drawn carriage carrying tourists through Playa de Las Américas has now passed into history. After more than ten years offering rides to visitors, albeit with “questionable licences”, the concejal de Seguridad del Ayuntamiento de Arona, Manuel Reverón has confirmed that the service has now been made illegal. Sr Reverón said that the two businesses which run the service do not comply with requirements; he added that there had, in any case, been complaints about them, above all from taxi drivers. The president of Radiotaxis Arona, Juan José Rodríguez Dorta, has confirmed that the carriages are considered by taxi firms to be unfair competition, operating without approved vehicles and the necessary permissions. Animal rights were of concern to some too, who thought it cruelty to drive the horses on tarmac. They argue that such maltreatment damages the touristic image of south Tenerife. Some, however, might see the familiar and colourful carriages’ disappearance in Arona itself as harming that image. It surely won’t help the municipality given that neighbouring Adeje has two routes for carriages, which operate under licence and bring around 11,000 Euros a year into Ayuntamiento coffers. a teenager is critically ill in Candelaria hospital after coming off his skateboard in C/ Hibiscos in Los Gigantes on Saturday. Emergency services were called out with reports that the 15-year-old had received head injuries in the fall and paramedics established that his injuries were so life-threatening that they immobilized and stabilized him at the scene, and then transferred him to the north by helicopter. Puerto de la Cruz will be particularly beautiful right now, thanks to the 3rd Puerto de la Cruz en flor Festival taking place this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the 19, 20 and 21 October. Organizers, the Centro de Iniciativas y Turismo, with collaboration from the Ayuntamiento, say that they hope to show visitors that the town is not just a coastal resort but a place where nature is one of its most identifying characteristics. The festival is designed to show to best effect the botanic heritage and natural beauty of Puerto de la Cruz, and multi-lingual volunteers will be on hand for guided tours starting at Parque del Taoro. The main gardens of the town will be open with free entry during the festival, so the organizers hope the public will take full advantage to enjoy the Botánico, Risco Bello and Sitio Litre. There is much more information about the festival on the website www.puertodelacruzenflor.es The Disney music spectacular Beauty and the Beast is being performed at the Adán Martín auditorium in Santa Cruz between 28 December and 6 January. Guachinches: a Question of Boundaries

a

GUaChInChE is a privately run business u s u a l l y found in a vineyard owners home for the sale of wine and food. The guachinches of yesteryear were regulated themselves. The vine grower opened a room, living room or patio to sell the wine of the year, accompanied by a few dishes of homemade food prepared by his family. The wine was the raison d ‘ être of these temporary businesses, which neither wanted nor could compete with bars or restaurants. A few years ago, the guachinches began to be noticed by the local councils for their easily earned black money that generated a business without control or obligations of any kind. This phenomenon now lives very differently in the municipalities of two of Tenerife’s regions, Acentejo and Valle de La Orotava, in which are concentrated most of the guachinches. The Cabildo insular, the winegrowers of Tenerife Asviten collective and the Association of small and medium enterprise of the Valle de La Orotava (Apymevo) understood, more than three years ago that the traditional guachinche could be the perfect way to create illegal restaurants. They voted on a legal regulation which, according to the latest forecasts of the Canary Islands, could be in force as soon as March 2013. In October 2009, it was agreed that the guachinches should meet several requirements: sell only wine of their own;

opening periods limited to the duration of the harvest and for no more than four months of the year; have an offer of food limited to less than four dishes; not to sell soft drinks or desserts, and have permits and insurance regulations. The Canarian Government has completed the first draft of the decree that aims to become the first regulatory standard of the guachinches. The content of this draft includes the recommendations agreed by the Cabildo, Apymevo and Asviten, and an official sign that identifies the guachinches as authentic and legal. Three years after the adoption of the list of recommendations of the Cabildo, the majority of the guachinches open today have not respected this consensual self-regulation. It is very difficult to find an establishment that only offers wine and water, or only three bowls of food. The economic crisis has worsened the situation, and virtually every day, there are new and false guachinches all over the

North of the island. It is also true that many guachinches have become bars with all the required papers in order, while still retaining the name and appearance of what they were. Pages dedicated to locate guachinches, such as www.guachinches.net, or on social networks like Facebook over 10,000 people have written in support of the guachinches. The real number of guachinches that exist in Tenerife is unknown but it is estimated there are anything from 500 to 1,000, although few are open at the same time.

This continuous rotation of establishments also makes it very difficult to specify how many are running in each time and place. Councils with more open guachinches agree that to close them all would cause serious social problems, as there are families who manage their sole livelihood through this irregular activity. However, as the guachinches are in fashion, there are a few entrepreneurs, many of them in the construction sector, who have opened businesses of this type on their lands and farms. There is a need, but also profit.

Ryan Air to Take Islas Airways Flights?

Continued from page 1

The airline employs around 160 staff who claim that they have not been paid their salaries for over three months now. Ryanair Air marketing and sales spokesman, Luis FernandezMellado has confirmed that the ‘low cost’ airline is interested in operating inter-island flights in the Canary Islands. “Ryanair always has shown its interest in increasing its operations and traffic in the Canary Islands, in addition to reducing the price of tickets.” “However, the existence of a number of restrictions that lack any sense and that are detrimental to the users on the island routes have been an obstacle for Ryanair when it comes to considering this possibility and its policy of low

rates on island flights,” Fernández-Mellado has pointed out that due to “restrictions” the result is that currently “it is possible to fly more cheaply to London from the Canary Islands, than to fly between the Islands”. As a comparative example, in a search for flights on Wednesday, at 12 noon to travel on 28th November, a Ryanair LondonTenerife flight had cost 35 euros; while one of Binter Canarias covering a LanzaroteTenerife journey was priced at 63 euros. The airline “always has left the door open” to negotiate with the regional government “the lifting of these restrictions” to operate in the island market, providing competition that results in protection of consumers and lower fares.

They also pointed out that the claimants profile has changed, “and now features people who are

unemployed with families and children”. Whooping Cough In Tenerife

T

he number of children suffering from Whooping Cough has soared throughout the Canary Islands, especially in Tenerife. This infectious bacterial disease of the respiratory tract has returned with a vengeance after few numbers being recorded, and the disease is being recognised a problem in other countries such as United States, United Kingdom and Germany, as well as Spain. Over the past 10 ½ months of 2012, Tenerife has already recorded 112 cases, according to data supplied by the Chief of epidemiology and prevention of the Ministry of health of the Canary, Domingo Núñez. It is important to remember that this highly contagious disease is dangerous to infants from birth up to 6 months. “The increase only occurred this year, although there were some cases recorded in

Gran Canaria in 2011”, states Nuñez. She went on “the big problem for the control and elimination of whooping cough is that the vaccine available only provides limited protection, unlike the measles vaccine, you can have the inoculation, but still contract the disease. The total number of suspected cases in the Canary Islands this year amounts to close to 900. Only 171 were confirmed in the Canary Islands, of which 112 were in Tenerife. Fortunately the only fatality was a girl aged just one month old. “Although she was rushed to an emergency unit, she later died”. Questioned about the reasons why there is so much difference between the number of suspects and the actual confirmed cases, the Department of epidemiology and prevention Regional Manager said that whooping cough “copies more common ailments so it is not easy to distinguish. The symptoms, repeated and frequent paroxysmal cough, and constant

trouble with breathing. “The usual treatment is based on antibiotics, and in reality, only requires hospital admission in the most serious of cases. It is, however really important to note that whilst small children are most at risk, the disease can occur in teenagers as well as adults”.

What Is Whooping Cough?

Pertussis or whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory

tract infection caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis or Bordetella parapertussis. It is a serious disease that can cause permanent disability in babies and even death. When an infected person sneezes or coughs, small droplets containing the bacterium moves through the air, and the disease spreads easily from person to person. The infection usually lasts for six weeks, and vaccination is still the

surest way of preventing it. 90% of all cases of this disease occur in the third world, Canada being the only developed nation in which pertussis is endemic. Having said that, Britain has confirmed that cases have quadrupled this year.

Prevention

It is extremely important to comply with the immunization schedule. Babies must be kept away from anyone with a persistent cough and if your baby shows any symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.

Kidnapper Bridge Club Arrested

The Guardia Civil Tenerife have arrested Czech citizen Peter Viskup, aged 50, who was wanted by the authorities in the USA to stand trial for three criminal charges relating to the kidnapping of his son, Kevin, 12 years of age. Kevin’s stepfather, Creighton Cutts, announced the news and thanked residents of the Canary Islands for their help in tracking down Viskup. The family had set up a Facebook Page expressly to help gain information about his whereabouts. Cutts stated that a woman in Tenerife had recognised Viskup on several occasions and he was eventually caught in Los Cristianos. After a dispute lasting over 3 years, Viskup was taken to court by his ex-wife Andrea over custody of Kevin. Viskup disagreed with the

outcome by the Supreme Court of Georgia and on the 4th of July public holiday he absconded with the boy. The FBI launched a search which included website checks and they issued an international criminal warrant for his arrest. Viskup was located in Tenerife last August; and he was subsequently arrested on September 27th.

Please note that the Las Americas Bridge Club is restarting for the winter. Commencing Friday 26th of October at 12.15pm at Treasure Island, Las Americas, opposite Tenerife Sol Hotel.

Fraud network smashed

aT least 74 people have been arrested by spanish police in an operation to break up Chinese gangs engaged in money laundering and fiscal fraud. The operation, in which more than 300 officers participated, was centred mainly in Madrid and Barcelona, but law enforcement authorities also acted in other spanish provinces to serve 108 arrest warrants. 202 vehicles were seized, along with a large amount of cash, in raids on homes and cargo ships. Among those arrested was the alleged head of the network, Chinese

citizen Gao Ping, Socialist councillor Jose Borras, who is in charge of security for the city of Fuenlabrada, outside of Madrid, and porn movie actor Nacho Vida. Gao Ping, an important Chinese businessman and owner of an art gallery in Madrid near the Queen Sofia Museum, intended to make himself into a “bridge” between Spain and China with business activities related to art. Agents carried out 120 raids, half of them

in Madrid, mainly in the industrial zone of Cobo Calleja, an industrial zone in Fuenlabrada, which houses more than 350 wholesale distributors and is the largest commercial centre of Chinese businessmen in Europe. Gao Ping is the owner of this centre which contains assorted establishments and from where products imported from China were distributed, including costume jewellery and handbags that are sold at up to 110

spain Tops Drop Out League

sPaIn is at the top of the league when it comes to school dropouts and youth unemployment, according to a 2012 report monitoring education worldwide published by United nations Organization for education, science and culture (Unesco). It reveals the “urgent” need to invest in education so that young people can acquire skills. Unesco, warns that compared with the average of 14 per cent of young people in countries of the European Union, in spain, this figure is doubled and one in every three students leaves secondary studies. This is a “cause for concern, in view of the gravity of the economic crisis and the level of youth unemployment”, according to UNESCO while detailing that unemployment for this group in Spain reached 51 per cent in March 2012. The report warns that since the economic downturn began, the possibilities of youth employment have diminished, in

particular affecting those with lower education levels. It also stated that unemployment rates increased “significantly” in Spain between 2007 and 2009, in particular to those who had not completed secondary education. These youth unemployment figures also hide the fact that young people stop looking for work because “they believe they will not to be able to find it”. At least one quarter of young Spaniards who left their studies at the end of the first cycle of secondary education and the report suggests that ‘Europe should train young people with appropriate skills, work experience and the capacity to adapt to new technologies’. They suggest a number of proposals, such as offering alternative education pathways so that young people can acquire basic core competencies and establishing a balance between professional and technical skills. It also proposes that all countries have a strategy aimed at disadvantaged social categories, especially young women and people living in rural areas.

spain’s austere national Day

s

P a I n observed its national Day festivities in quieter mood last Friday as the traditional military pageant was scaled back to cut costs. October 12 is celebrated as the day Christopher C o l u m b u s discovered america in the name of the spanish Crown.

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia presided over a reduced parade that featured none of the usual pomp and circumstance, fighter jets or tanks. Instead, there were 2,600 marching soldiers, 50 armoured cars and seven trainer aircraft normally only used for displays. Mariano Rajoy, attending his first parade as prime minister, was greeted in silence by the public,

instead of the traditional whistles and boos endured by predecessor Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero during his last years in office. The parade kicked off with the national anthem being played, followed by a solemn tribute to the flag and to those killed in the line of duty, which ended with the

Aguila (Eagle) patrol flying overhead, streaking the sky with the colours of the Spanish flag. After the parade, Spain’s king and queen hosted a reception at the Royal Palace to commemorate the day, which is celebrated under the slogan “Our strength is all of us.” Spain is under pressure to fix its finances as

it struggles through a double recession. The belttightening has increased tension between the central government and the semi-autonomous regions, where some even cancelled Friday’s holiday. Twelve schools in the Catalonia region ignored the festivities as they refused to acknowledge a holiday that highlights

Spanish unity over regional identities. “We feel Catalan; we have nothing to celebrate,” said Luis Plana, a parentteacher association spokesman. However, some 6,000 people gathered in Barcelona to wave Spanish flags and express their desire to remain both Catalans and part

of Spain. Many draped themselves in Spanish national colours and carried banners saying “We are all Catalonia.” Around 100 pro-Catalan separatists attended the Barcelona gathering, shouting abuse. A line of police kept the two groups apart, though one person was slightly hurt in a minor scuffle.

Oil Spill Trial Begins Nearly a decade after what many consider Spain’s worst environmental disaster, the trial over the massive oil spill in November 2002 that devastated hundreds of miles of Spanish and French coastline has begun. The oil tanker Prestige raised the alarm on November 13, 2002, in a storm with gale-force winds off northwest Spain in an area known as “the Coast of Death,” famous for numerous shipwrecks. The ship reported it had

a gash in its hull and some of its 70,000 tons of fuel oil cargo was gushing out. Spanish authorities soon ordered the stricken ship to move farther off the coast. It struggled for days but on November 19 it split in two. Oil continued to leak from it, at the bottom of the Atlantic. Much of this oil, described as having the sticky consistency of chewing gum, came back to blacken hundreds of miles of coastline in Spain and in neighbouring France. It was an ecological disaster, which left dead and oil-

Apparently the Men’s Spanish Basketball team weren’t happy losing in the Olympics in London this summer and decided to take it out on their hotel rooms.

The Spanish Basketball Federation issued the following statement: “The leaving parties are usually a regular thing when players finish a tournament. After living together for six weeks, preparing and competing, they have a huge party to celebrate. But it has never led to this.” Apparently, some of the team were throwing furniture at each other by way of celebrating the Silver medal win. The full details of the incident have yet to be released so it is not known which team members were involved in the vandalism.

laden birds as a painful reminder. It was also an economic disaster for Spain’s vital fishing industry, which was brought to a standstill for months over health concerns. The trial began in La Coruna, the Greek captain, Apostolos Mangouras, could be sentenced to up to 12 years in prison if convicted of environmental crimes. But he is not expected to testify until next November 13, ten years to the day, when the Prestige first experienced

problems. The captain, along with a London-based insurance consortium, also could face damage payments of $5 billion, if the court accepts the claims filed by the national governments of Spain and France, as well as businesses and individuals. Three other men also face charges: a Greek officer on the ship; a Filipino officer on the ship whose whereabouts are unknown, and a former Spanish merchant marine government official. Testimony of the defendants is due to begin on November 13th; the trial is expected to take months, with a verdict possible by next autumn.

There are 70 lawyers and 1,500 claimants who are represented in 55 associations, and dozens of witnesses. Authorities are holding the trial at the fairgrounds in La Coruna, because the normal courtrooms in town are too small. A civil society association called Nunca Máis (Never Again) has been leading demands for past and present conservative politicians to stand in the dock and defend the decisions of the government at the time, which many blame for exacerbating Spain’s worst environmental disaster. Among the politicians in their line of fire is Mariano

Rajoy, a native of Galicia, who is now Spain’s prime minister. Ten years ago, Mr. Rajoy was deputy prime minister as well as the government’s main spokesman, and was directly involved in Madrid’s response to the Prestige’s accident. While the tanker ended up spilling 20 million gallons of oil into the sea, Mr. Rajoy initially predicted that any leakage would be contained and only amount to “little threads of oil that look like Plasticine.” That turned out to be wildly inaccurate, as images of Spain’s oil-coated beaches made their way worldwide.

Basketball Team Trash Hotel Rooms The team allegedly racked up more than 10,000 Euros in damages between two hotel rooms they stayed in after their 107-100 loss to the United States in the gold medal game at the Olympics. Exact reports about the extent of the damage have not been disclosed.

spain’s El País newspaper axes 1/3 of Workforce

I

T was one of the few quality newspaper success stories in the developed world, but now spain’s El País is to axe a third of its workforce as the country’s media sector collapses under the weight of the global newspaper crisis and worsening d o m e s t i c recession. The announcement has provoked bitter tensions within the newspaper as fears grow that the sale of a major share in El País’s debt-laden parent

company, Prisa, to a group of New York-based investors in 2010 will lead to the paper being bled of resources or sold off. Juan Luis Cebrián, the veteran former El País editor who is now Prisa’s chief executive, informed the workforce a week ago. Of the 464 staff, the company plans to sack 128, send 21 into early retirement and the remainder face a 15% pay cut.. Under labour law changes introduced earlier this year, the cost of shedding one-third of the workforce is about half what it would have been in 2011. Journalists at the paper responded with a two-day withdrawal of

bylines, and plan to begin disruptive stoppages shortly. Calls for the editor, Javier Moreno, to resign and Cebrián to pay back millions of euros he has earned in recent years came at a tense union meeting. Management claimed the paper’s survival was at stake. “Either we change our model, and the newspaper’s structure, or we cannot continue producing El País,” said the newspaper’s chief executive, José Luis Sainz. Moreno won a battle to persuade journalists to put their bylines back on articles last week, though union delegates denounced strong-arm tactics. “These actions on

the part of Moreno have created an irrevocable split between the newsroom and its editor,” the newspaper’s union chapel said. “In the light of this, the El País workforce takes the view that Javier Moreno is now unfit to occupy his post.” Management argue that the historically profitmaking paper began to lose money in August and that revenue was down 200m Euros since 2007. Sales are expected to fall 10% this year to 320,000. “We are not going to put out the same newspaper with fewer resources. It is time for a new transformation,” said Moreno. It was not clear, however, what that new model involved for a brand that aims to be the global Spanish-language

newspaper. El País recently lost its digital boss Gumersindo Lafuente, who had turned around the paper’s lacklustre online presence, amid rumours that he was fed up with foot-dragging over future plans. More importantly, El País’s founder and owner Jesus Polanco died in 2007, bringing an uncertain end to three decades in which the moderately left wing paper had established itself as Spain’s top-selling daily. Three years later, a group of investors headed by the “homeless billionaire” Nicolas Berggruen (who lives in hotels) and Britishborn Martin Franklin took a major share in Prisa and dug it out of a 4.7bn Euros debt hole; Cebrián told the Guardian then

that the future would bring “very deep change”. The massive job losses at El País came as two of Spain’s other biggest newspaper groups, El Mundo publisher Unidad Editorial, and ABC publisher Vocento, were shedding employees too. Spain’s overpopulated TV news industry is also shrinking, with the state broadcaster TVE announcing a plan to reduce salary costs by 25% and Valencia’s regional broadcaster sacking 1,200 people. Prisa closed its CNN+ news channel in 2010, while recent mergers bringing together the private broadcasters La Sexta with Antena 3 and Tele5 with Cuatro are also shrinking Spain’s journalism pool.

Spanish Bank Swindle

A

group of f a c t o r y workers, fishermen’s wives and builders gather outside their savings bank in the small Spanish mountain village of O Rosal. They are demanding their money back, holding up posters that read: ‘Tricked by the banks. Plundered by the government’ in what has become a weekly protest. “These people are on the edge of destitution, their savings are all they have,” says 60-yearold retired factory worker Argimiro Martinez, a customer of NovaGalicia Bank (NGB) since he was 7 years old and one of the protest organizers. Martinez and his fellow demonstrators are among thousands of Spaniards who say they have been conned by banks into exchanging their savings for preference shares: high-risk, complex financial instruments seized on by lenders in the financial crisis as a means of

bringing in extra capital. Many of the banks which issued these products swapped them for shares and bonds. The main stateowned banks such as NGB did not. NGB has apologized and some banks have offered compensation for the worst cases. But now the banks are negotiating with Europe for capital as part of an international bailout, the terms of which will include inflicting a loss on people who in many cases handed over their life-savings. As the talks take place in Brussels, protests are gathering pace across Spain, both in the northwest region of Galicia - the seat of NGB bank - and in Madrid, where lender Bankia is based and where demonstrators have shown their anger outside the headquarters of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s People’s Party. Lawyers say these people were swindled, and forecast a flood of compensation claims worth hundreds of millions of euros. “If I have been conned into buying a product I didn’t want, it’s a lack of responsibility on the part of the bank, the same as if I went into a branch and slipped and

twisted my ankle because the floor was wet,” said lawyer Ramon Ozores at Colon Abogados. Spain has asked for up to 100 billion euros to fix its banking system, groaning under massive losses from

a property crash and loan defaults. NGB, at the centre of the miss-selling allegations in Galicia, is one of four banks alongside Bankia, Catalunya Caixa and Banco de Valencia, which were rescued by the state and are first in line to get European Union funds. Most Spanish banks sold preferential shares in the early months of Europe’s debt crisis, to increase solvency ratios under stricter regulatory demands. They stepped up their marketing of these products from 2008, embarking on aggressive campaigns that often involved cold-calling customers. Preferential shares are half-way between a share and a bond. They do not mature, are not protected by the state’s deposit guarantee fund and stop paying out a coupon if the

company falls into losses. In a 2006 Caixanova internal document seen by Reuters, management describe preferential shares as the ‘financial lung’ of the business, enabling the bank to shore up its capital and embark on an ambitious global expansion plan. In the event of a bankruptcy, preferential shareholders are at the back of the queue, behind bondholders. Banks throughout Europe sold preferential shares. In Spain, banks pushed them as safe, fixed-term deposits from which customers could get their money out quickly. In O Rosal, car factory worker Avelino Guisande’s bank manager rang him at home in 2009 to ask him to drop by to discuss a savings plan for 40,000 euros of his severance pay. Guisande, who has trouble

13

reading having swapped schooling for looking after sheep on the mountains, says he signed the papers where he was told to, after being assured he would be able to get his money out with 48 hours’ notice. “I didn’t read anything, because to read those papers I’d have to take them home for a week. I read in my own way - a little and with difficulty,” he says. Guisande, now 60 and still jobless, has since discovered what he thought was a high interest savings account was in fact preference shares, and he cannot access the money. Cashing in the preferential shares was dependent on a secondary market that collapsed last year, leaving 43,000 NGB clients unable to get to their savings during the worst recession in half a century.

Conjoined Twins separated

s

U R G E O n s at Great Ormond street hospital have s u c c e s s f u l l y separated conjoined twins, a day after they were born. The British girls were joined at the abdomen and shared part of their intestines. In a fourhour operation a team of 20 doctors and nurses were able to separate the twins without complications. Rosie and Ruby Formosa are now doing well and

are smiling “bubbly babies”, according to their mum angela. Mrs Formosa, from Bexleyheath, Kent, said: “Between 16 and 20 weeks we found out that they were joined. I didn’t know what to think. I was shocked and I felt sad. We didn’t know what to expect until they were born. The doctors could not tell where they were connected.” The girls were born in July, six weeks prematurely. Surgeons would normally wait until twins are several months old before

attempting to separate them. But the structural abnormality had caused a blockage in their intestine, which required immediate emergency surgery. Professor Agostino Pierro, who led the team, said: “The twins were very small

because they were so young. But they are doing very well. The babies will need further treatment in the future but we expect that they will both be able to lead happy and normal lives.” Mrs Formosa said she

was relieved to have the girls back home. “They are really well. They are putting on weight. They are normal bubbly babies who are starting to smile and cry when they want something. When I was pregnant they were saying

that the survival chances were quite low. For them to have been operated on and doing so well, it is amazing.” Great Ormond Street Hospital is one of the world’s most experienced centres for separating conjoined twins.

Rolling Stones Concert Row

F

urious fans hoping to be at the Rolling Stones’ 50th anniversary gigs at London’s O2 Arena have discovered it could cost them thousands of pounds. Official ticket prices for two shows, at London’s O2 Arena, range from £95 to £375 plus fees, while a “VIP hospitality” tickets are priced at £950. One potential buyer said: “Just tried to buy a couple of tickets for the Rolling Stones at the O2 next month but didn’t proceed when I found out

the price - an incredible £1,302. They weren’t even particularly special seats. For those you need the VIP package at £950 or £1,900 for two.” There have been reports that a “secondary” ticket site was selling seats for more than £13,000. And one site dealing in tickets had added a £140 processing fee to the cost of two tickets it was selling for £770. “These prices are a joke,” fan Steve Grace wrote in a comment appearing on the official See Tickets website. “To expect this sort of money just makes me lose a lot of respect for these guys.” Drachan Forster added on the site: “Saw them in Rio at a free

concert. Was pickpocketed relentlessly throughout, but nothing compares to this fleecing, £246 for some of the worse seated tickets in the house. Disgusting.” Many fans protested online that the band should have rewarded their fans for their loyalty over the last half-century with cheaper shows. “Considering these guys started off as a workingclass set of lads, these prices are well out of reach of the ordinary working man,” Chrissi Matusevics posted on Facebook.

American Express customers gained advance access to tickets for the London shows on Monday, followed on Wednesday by subscribers to the band’s mailing list and users of Britain’s O2 mobile phone network. A spokesman for promoter Virgin Live said: “These four shows are very special gigs to mark a unique occasion and milestone in the Rolling Stones’ history. They are a one-off celebration of their 50th anniversary and not part of an extended global tour where substantial

production costs can be spread over a lengthy period of shows. The ticket prices are in fact spread over a range of costs and are comparable and similar to other huge shows and attractions.” The band will play to 40,000 people during their two nights at the O2 and will play two more shows in Newark, New Jersey, in the US, in December. US music magazine Billboard reported in August that Mick Jagger and bandmates Charlie Watts, Keith Richards and

15

Ronnie Wood will earn a total of $25m (£15.5m) for the four shows. The anger comes as the band’s first new studio recording for seven years has been unable to persuade many fans to part with 99p for a download, with the song at a depressing number 74 in the charts. According to midweek sales figures, Doom And Gloom, which went on sale just days ago is a long way from making it into the top 40 on Sunday. The band last made it into the top ten in 1981 with Start Me Up.

New Search for Ben

A

fter being missing for 21 years, British police investigating his disappearance are to search a mound of earth close to where he went missing. Ben vanished on the island of Kos in July 1991 when he was 21 months old, after his mother and grandparents moved there from Sheffield. Despite a number of possible sightings and a range of theories about what happened to him, no trace of the youngster has been found. A team of experts will begin examining the grounds of the farmhouse from which Ben disappeared tomorrow, before deciding whether any areas should be dug up. The search, which is expected to last up to 10 days, will centre on a large mound near the house which is now grassed over. One theory is that Ben could have been buried beneath building material which was dumped there at the

time he went missing. His mother, Kerry Needham, 41, said: “This is an elimination process and that’s how I’m dealing with it. It’s one of the most important things to happen in 21 years.” Mrs Needham has previously said she believes the mound was already there when Ben went missing. Angela Smith, the MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, told BBC Radio Sheffield: “Hopefully they won’t find Ben in that rubble and it closes down another line of inquiry and narrows down the possibilities.”I know that she will be very keen for this work to be undertaken and rock solid confident, I’m sure, that they won’t find Ben there.”

South Yorkshire Police, which is leading the operation, said the search, which follows a request from Greek police for extra support, would also involve a forensic archaeologist and search dogs. A spokesman for the force said: “During the

past 18 months, South Yorkshire Police has reviewed all material held by the Greek police in relation to Ben’s disappearance in order to support the Greek enquiry. We have also obtained Ben’s DNA from Sheffield Children’s Hospital.”

Bank Managers Son in Bomb Plot

2

1 - y e a r - old Bangladeshi Q u a z i Mohammad Rezwanul Ahsan has been charged with trying to detonate a fake 1,000lb bomb outside the US Federal Reserve Bank in New York, home to “the world’s largest accumulation of gold”. FBI Agents grabbed Nafis, who had a mobile phone he believed was rigged as a detonator, after he made several attempts to blow up the device inside a vehicle parked next to the bank. Nafis had travelled to the US with “the purpose of conducting a terrorist attack” and actively

tried to make al Qaeda contacts after his arrival. But the family of the 21-year-old suspect insist he had never displayed any radical tendencies and said he was a devout Muslim whose arrest had come as a shock. His father Quazi Mohammad Ahsanullah said: “We’re stunned. Nafis is not a radical type. He says prayers five times a day, and reads the holy Koran and Hadith every day. I have never seen him reading any books on jihad. We don’t believe that he can have committed this... He is our pride and joy.” Nafis’ extended family lives in North Jatrabari, an upper middle-class neighbourhood of

southeastern Dhaka. His father is a senior vice president of National Bank and his sister is a doctor. Speaking from the family home, Nafis’ brotherin-law Arik said they had spoken to him only hours before his arrest and even discussed a possible bride for him. “We heard the news this morning. Everyone is crying here, Nafis never showed any form of radicalisation when he was in Bangladesh.” Officials at North South University in Bangladesh said Nafis had struggled during his eight terms as an electrical engineering and telecommunications student and had been effectively forced to

leave after disappointing exam results. His family said he then moved to the US where he initially took up a place at Missouri Southern State University, left after a term due to cost and took a job at a

New York hotel. Authorities insisted the alleged terror plot never posed an actual risk - but that it demonstrated the value of using sting operations to neutralise young extremists eager

to harm Americans. Before trying to carry out the plot, Nafis went to a warehouse to help assemble a 453kg (1,000lb) bomb using inert material, according to the FBI. Court documents claim he asked an undercover agent to videotape him saying: “We will not stop until we attain victory or martyrdom.” An official complaint said Nafis contacted a confidential FBI informant in July telling him he wanted to form a terror cell. In further conversations, authorities said Nafis proposed several spots for his attack, including the New York Stock Exchange, and that in a written letter taking responsibility for the Federal Reserve job he was about to carry out, he said he wanted to “destroy America”. Nafis has appeared in court in Brooklyn charged with trying to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to al Qaeda. The bank in New York, just a short walk from the scene of the September 11 terror attacks, is one of the most fortified buildings in the city.

santander Backs Out of RBs sale sanTanDER has pulled out of negotiations with the Royal Bank of scotland (RBs) to buy 316 of their branches.

The chief executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland has described the collapsed £1.65bn deal to rival Santander as “disappointing”. RBS said it had received notification from the Spanish banking giant that it would be pulling out of the deal. The UK state-owned bank had planned to sell the assets, which also included 40 banking centres for small and medium-sized businesses, in a deal approved by the European Commission. Santander said it had withdrawn after it became apparent that a revised target for the purchase to be completed by the end of this year would not be achieved.

The Spanish bank said the sale was originally scheduled to be completed in 2011, but this was extended to the end of 2012. RBS Group chief executive Stephen Hester promised there would be “no disruption” for customers and said the taxpayer-backed bank would now begin the search for a new buyer. Mr Hester said: “It is business as usual in all of these branches, and customers don’t need to take any action. While this is a profitable part of our business that we would rather not part with, RBS has worked hard to ensure it is substantially separate from our UK branch network and corporate business and largely ready to be taken on by a new owner.” Santander agreed to buy the assets in August 2010, comprising the RBS branch

business in England and Wales, and the NatWest branch business in Scotland, along with certain business operations across the UK. The deal had been approved by EU regulators following competition concerns. The European Commission ordered RBS - 83% owned by the taxpayer - to sell the assets as a condition for receiving bailout aid from the Government in the wake of the financial crisis. Santander UK chief executive Ana Botin said: “Our guiding principle throughout this transaction has been a seamless journey for customers - which require the business to be delivered to Santander UK by RBS in a steady state. We have concluded that, given delays, it is not possible to complete this within a reasonable timeframe.”

Drugs & Gun Found On Rapper Tour Bus

P

The discovery was made during a routine stop at a checkpoint near El Paso in Texas. “The agent requested all seven occupants out of the bus and conducted an inspection of the vehicle,” said Rusty Fleming, from the local sheriff’s office, a dog was used to sniff out the drugs. “A search produced a small plastic container containing marijuana, 36 small bags containing heroin

and a loaded .45 pistol.” A member of the singer’s entourage, Brian Jones, took responsibility for the illicit items and was arrested, the other occupants on the bus, including Nelly, were released. “It is my understanding a member of my staff made an unfortunate decision to bring unlawful materials onto our tour bus that resulted in his arrest,” Nelly said. “Neither I nor anyone else on the tour bus was aware of his decision to bring these on board.” He later posted on Twitter, that he was “mad as hell” with the man, whom he described as someone who works for him as well as

being a friend. The incident took place at the same checkpoint where rapper Snoop Dogg, singer Willie Nelson and actor Armand Hammer had previously been stopped for possession of controlled substances. Mayor, 91 Admits Stealing A 9 1 - y e a r - old woman has escaped a prison sentence after stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars from a small Alabama town where she served as mayor for three decades. Mary Ella Hixon stole $201,000 from River Falls town over the past three years and had given the money to family, friends and business associates. Hixon, who resigned her mayorship when she turned herself in to police, was only re-elected in August.

The town has only 500 residents and is just north of the Florida panhandle was practically bankrupted by the thefts, said Covington County District Attorney Walt Merrell. Hixon has been placed on five years’ probation after a judge suspended a sentence of 10 years in prison because of her age. “Had it not been a 91-year-old woman, I would have stood on my head to make sure she went to prison,” Mr Merrell said. A 47-year-old man who lived with Hixon for years has also been charged with stealing. Richard Moss, whose

Hixon gave Moss about $80,000 in stolen funds, claiming he was a police officer and repair worker. But police say he was neither. Hixon also admitted to paying $525 in hush money to keep her crimes secret. Her attorney,

Mark Christensen, said “a lot of factors” led Hixon to steal. “I think, at least partially, she was being taken advantage of by some others she trusted and probably shouldn’t have,” Despite her advanced age Hixon was a powerful local figure whose actions went unreported because of her status. “We had quite a few

citizens come forward with information they had held on to for years,” Mr Merrell said. “They were reluctant to do so earlier for fear of being ostracised or because it was a proverbial ‘little old lady’.” Hixon has been told to repay the money and her estate will be held liable if she dies before the full amount is returned.

British Man Dies after Tour Boat sinks a BRITIsh man has been confirmed dead after a tour boat capsized in sharkinfested waters in south africa. Two British women survived after being trapped under the boat for several hours. The dead man has been named in as 64-year-old Peter Hyett, from Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales, who was on a two week holiday with his wife Suzanne and daughter Helen. They survived the tragedy at Hout Bay near the city of Cape Town. “At the moment things are a bit raw. It’s been such a shock,” Suzanne Hyett said after identifying her husband’s body. The family had taken the trip on the Miroshga to go seal-watching off Duiker Island just hours before they were due to fly home.

The body of second man, South African tour guide John Roberts, has also been recovered Thirty-six people were pulled from the sea by the crews of other tour boats and rescuers from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI). “Several British nationals were taken to hospital following the incident, most of who have now been released,” a Foreign Office spokesman said. Three women, including the two Britons, were trapped under the boat for several hours before they were rescued. Lynette Hartmann and Bronwyn Armstrong were trapped in an air pocket for more than three-and-a-half hours while police divers gave them breathing apparatus, and emergency coaching in how to use it, so they could swim out from underneath

the catamaran’s hull. “After much coaching and encouragement and despite one woman initially refusing to shed her lifejacket they were both successfully brought out by the police divers to safety,” the NSRI said. “All three women were transported to hospital.” South African maritime

officials have begun an investigation into what caused the boat to capsize on the Atlantic Ocean side of the Cape Peninsula. The Miroshga is operated by Southern Ambition Marine Safaris which describes itself as a whale watching, dolphin and Seal Island tour operator. On its website it describes the Miroshga

as “a light, fast 11-metre dual-hull powerboat with capacity for 42 people offering luxury and comfort”. It goes on to say: “The close-to-thewater ride appeals to those

seeking the ultimate marine experience. It offers the best perspective of the wildlife that graces our coastline and panoramic views of the Cape Peninsula.”

World’s Most Expensive Cocktail S a lv a tore Calabrese, a cocktail maker claims he has set a new record for the most expensive cocktail in the world. Calabrese says the cocktail named Salvatore’s Legacy, is made using ingredients dating back to before American independence and the French Revolution, will set you back a cool £5,500 per glass. Guinness World Records said it is investigating the claim, which would topple

its current record holder, a cocktail costing a mere £3,766.52 and served in a Dubai hotel. The attempt was made at Salvatore’s, Mr Calabrese’s bar at the Playboy Club London, in Mayfair, central London. It uses just four ingredients: a 1778 Clos de Griffier Vieux Cognac, a 1770 Kummel liqueur, a circa-1860 Dubb Orange Curacao and two dashes of Angostura bitters dating from around 1900. The record bid was supposed to take place in July but was delayed when a bottle of one of the ingredients smashed. Mr Calabrese said before the attempt:

“I was devastated when my bottle smashed and thought my dream of breaking the world record was over, but thankfully it has all worked out and nothing will stop me now.”

A spokeswoman for Guinness World Records said: “GWR can confirm that we have received an official claim for the most expensive cocktail record attempt. “The current record for the

most expensive cocktail commercially available is ‘27,321’, costing 27,321 United Arab Emirates dirham (£3,766.52) which can be found on the menu of The Skyview Bar of Burj

Al Arab Hotel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. GWR will only be able to confirm if the attempt has been successful or not three working days after we have received the evidence.”

Priceless Paintings Stolen

S

even paintings have been stolen from a Dutch museum in one of the largest heists in years and could be worth 200 million euros. The haul, taken in the early hours of Tuesday from the Kunsthal museum in Rotterdam, includes works by Picasso, Matisse and Monet. Police said they include Pablo Picasso’s Tete d’Arlequin (1971) and Henri Matisse’s La Liseuse and Blanc Et Jaune (1919). Two pieces by Claude Monet Waterloo Bridge, London (1901) and Charing Cross Bridge, London (1901) - were also stolen. The thieves also made off with Paul Gauguin’s Femme Devant Une Fenetre Ouverte, Dite La Fiancee (1888), Meyer de Haan’s Autoportrait (circa 1889 - 91) and Woman With Eyes Closed (2002) by Lucian Freud. The museum says the value is “considerable”, but declined to put a figure on them. An expert at the Cornette de Saint-Cyr auction

house in Paris, who requested anonymity, said the paintings were worth “between 150 and 200 million euros”. Museum director Emily Ansenk, who flew back to Rotterdam after hearing of the theft during a visit to Turkey, told a press conference that what had happened was “a nightmare for any museum. The stolen paintings were “unique works that are known around the world,” she said. Alerted by an alarm but arriving at the museum in Rotterdam after the thieves had fled, police said they had launched a major investigation that includes interviewing possible witnesses and examining CCTV footage. Ms Ansenk said police arrived at the scene just five minutes after the alarm went off in Rotterdam’s museum park. The works were among the 150-strong Triton Foundation’s collection, which was being shown in its entirety to the public for the first time to mark the museum’s 20th anniversary, the Kunsthal’s website said. The collection “has developed into one with

an international reputation and which comprises representative works by the most important and influential artists of the late 19th

century to the present day,” it said. The exhibition “comprises works from almost every significant art movement”, it added.

It is the biggest art theft in The Netherlands since 20 paintings were stolen from Amsterdam’s Van Gogh museum in 1991.

Brain Damaged Boy Gets 6 Million Pounds

E L E V E n -y E a R - O L D Joseph O’Reggio who was left severely brain-damaged after being starved of oxygen at birth has been granted a £6m nhs compensation package.

The boy from Wolverhampton now suffers from cerebral palsy and has learning difficulties. His parents, Rachel and Julian, fought a court battle for over a decade following Joseph’s birth at the New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton in April 2001. The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust has apologised because they admitted he should have been delivered an hour earlier. It has not, however, accepted liability for the

injuries but has said there was a breach of duty. Mrs O’Reggio went into labour with him after a healthy pregnancy, but the next morning Joseph’s heart rate dropped. The situation was monitored but it was not until just before 10pm that evening that specialist help was called for. The Trust has agreed to meet 80% of Joseph’s claim. It means he will be paid a sum of money every year for the rest of his life. Mrs O’Reggio said it had been a long and difficult road but the family were now at the end: “It was just soul destroying, so I try not to think of what should have been. We have to accept Joseph as he is now and make the best of it. But it was devastating, and I

wouldn’t want anyone to go through what we went through. It’s been a tough journey but we got there in the end”. The seven-figure settlement means the O’Reggio family will be able to move into a new home and make adaptations that will ensure Joseph can have access to the best facilities, including a sensory room and a hydrotherapy pool. His can family take comfort from the fact Joseph will receive care for the rest of his life: “It will be in a trust fund, and it should and will last for as long as he lives, whether it be 20, 40 or 50 years. When we’re past it there will be a team of people to make sure he’s cared for, for the rest of his life. It’s a huge relief.” said his father.

Sara Burns, medical law expert at Irwin Mitchell who represented the O’Reggio family, said: “Rachel and Julian have waited patiently and with huge dignity for today’s settlement, which will make such a big difference to Joe’s life. This was a complicated case but the

fact is the mistakes made during Joe’s care should simply not have happened. Trusts must ensure thorough training of staff and that guidelines are in place for when to call for senior support, not just for midwives, but all areas of the NHS. This will reduce basic, preventable errors

from happening that have devastating consequences for patients and their families.” The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust said in a statement that it hopes “the award of damages will secure Joseph’s future and assist him in maximising his potential”.

Royal Marines Charged With Murder Nine Royal Marines have been charged with murder over the death of an insurgent in Afghanistan last year. The arrests are thought to be the first time UK servicemen have been held on suspicion of such charges during the conflict in Afghanistan.

The arrests, by the Royal Military Police, relate to a killing that happened after “an engagement with an insurgent”, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said. No civilians were involved. The MoD said: “The investigation will now be taken forward and dealt with by the Service Justice system. “These arrests demonstrate the Department and the Armed Forces’ determination to ensure UK personnel act

in accordance with their Rules of Engagement and our standards. It would be inappropriate to make any further comment while the investigation is under way.” As the alleged incident took place outside the country, the Royal Marines accused will not be subject to UK courts. The rules of engagement, largely derived from the Geneva Convention, dictate under what circumstances British troops are allowed to open fire in direct contact or to prevent attacks. Defence expert Shashank Joshi, says it is significant that the MoD had stated no civilians were involved. “This suggests one possibility may have been rules of engagement surrounding the surrender of insurgents were not obeyed,” he said. “If an insurgent surrenders or makes clear his wish to surrender and

is subsequently dealt with as if he were in combat or is summarily shot, that would constitute a very severe breach of the rules of engagement. Soldiers have to make split-second decisions, not only about whether an individual is an insurgent or a civilian,

but also, if they are an insurgent, what level of threat they pose.” During a six-month tour of duty, which lasted from April to October last year, 3 Commando Brigade saw seven servicemen killed in action, all from 42 Commando. The tour,

Operation Herrick 14, was the unit’s fourth and saw the force score notable successes in capturing explosives from the Taliban. Brigadier Ed Davis, who commanded Task Force Helmand and led 3 Commando Brigade during the tour, said his men had

It is unknown why the military opened fire on the presidential motorcade, but local media reports suggested the patrol had not been told of the President’s trip. Speaking on national television, the government’s communications minister Hamdi Ould Mahjoub said: “This was an accidental shooting on the presidential convoy as it returned to Nouakchott. The

army unit did not recognise the presidential convoy. The Mauritanian people can be reassured, the president is fine. He was slightly wounded, and he got out of the vehicle unassisted upon arrival at the hospital, where he walked in without difficulty.” Mr Mahjoub said the President’s life was not in danger and that he was being treated at a military hospital. Mauritania, which straddles black and Arab Africa on the west coast of the continent, has enjoyed several years of relative political stability. Mr Aziz was elected in 2009 after coming to power in a 2008 coup and he is now seen by western nations as a key ally in tackling al Qaeda in the region. During his presidency, he has faced protests over complaints ranging from corruption to his poor handling of a recent food crisis.

Stars Pay Tribute to Whitney

S

tars of music and film are to pay tribute to the six-time Grammy-winning singer Whitney Houston who died at a Beverly Hills hotel in February. Houston has been honoured with a final send-off from some of the biggest names in film and music.

25

Halle Berry, Britney Spears, Jennifer Hudson and Usher paid tribute to the late “unforgettable” singer at the We Will Always Love You: A Grammy Salute to Whitney Houston. Oscarwinning star Berry told the audience: “She inspired a generation of little girls and women to believe in their own dream and to know that they had within

themselves the greatest gift of all. I was one of those little girls who then became a woman who never ever, ever, stopped loving Whitney Houston.” The event was attended by Houston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, who was joined by boyfriend Nick Gordon and record label executive Clive Davis who discovered Whitney. But the singer’s mother, Cissy, and her brother

Gary were notably absent from the tribute show, due to be televised next month. Whitney’s body was discovered in a hotel bath in Beverly Hills in February, the night before the Grammy awards. She was found to have drowned accidently after taking cocaine. Other drugs, including marijuana, were also in her system.

At the final send-off show, Jennifer Hudson channelled Whitney’s 80s style, singing I’m Every Woman, How Will I Know and I Wanna Dance With Somebody with big hair and a sparkly blazer. But I Will Always Love You, which Hudson sang at the hastily arranged tribute during the Grammy awards in February, was left to Whitney, who was shown performing the

hit at the 1994 Grammys. Spears shared her memories of the singer, revealing that it was her rendition of Whitney’s I Have Nothing that secured her the record deal that started her career. R&B star Usher sang I Believe In You And Me while gospel singers Cece Winans and Yolanda Adams’ performance of Count On Me had Whitney’s family in tears.

and is based in part on interviews with Dylan by historian Douglas Brinkley. Brinkley, who recently wrote a cover story on Dylan for Rolling Stone, said he and Depp thought the Dylan book was “the ideal way” to inaugurate the Infinitum Nihil series. “Bob has been very warm and forthcoming with us,” Brinkley said. “His music has inspired us both deeply since we were teenagers.” The Dylan book is scheduled to be published in 2015. Dylan and Brinkley will also collaborate on the editing and publication of a previously announced novel by one of Dylan’s heroes, folk musician Woody Guthrie, who died in 1967. House Of Earth was completed by Guthrie in 1947, but was only recently discovered. That release is scheduled for January. HarperCollins said Depp was seeking out “authentic,

outspoken and visionary ideas and voices”. Depp explained: “I pledge, on behalf of Infinitum Nihil, that we will do our best to deliver publications worthy of peoples’ time,

of peoples’ concern, publications that might ordinarily never have breached the parapet. For this dream realised, we would like to salute HarperCollins for their

faith in us and look forward to a long and fruitful relationship together.” Depp, whose movies include Edward Scissorhands and Dark Shadows, already has

ties to the book world. He was a close friend of Hunter S Thompson, and starred in film adaptations of Thompson’s books Rum Diary and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

02 Issues apology O2 has apologised to its customers, again, and says it is investigating the cause of a technical problem that led to millions of its customers suffering connection issues last Friday. around 10% of its 23 million customers were affected by the outage. O2 admitted people in some areas had been unable to make or receive calls, texts or access data services. On Friday night, an O2 spokesperson said “Further to our previous update where some customers in some areas were unable to make or receive calls, send texts or use data, service has been fully restored for all remaining impacted customers. Once again

we’re sorry for any inconvenience this has caused.” Asked whether any compensation would be offered, the spokesperson said: ‘’Our first priority was to get customers back up and in service. We’ll now need to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the problem.’’ The problem began when one of O2’s network nodes, which help connect and manage t r a f fi c , failed around midday. O2 issued a statement saying the fault had been identified and fixed on Friday afternoon, but admitted the problems were still being experienced well into the

evening. They said it was trying to discover the cause of the glitch, but that it was the not the same fault that led to

widespread connection issues in July, when some customers had a 24hour service outage. The company had only just recovered from a separate problem that began on Thursday, involving people unable to make calls or use data with some 2G phones. O2 said it had had a problem with

its 2G service in northwest Scotland, and anyone with a 2G phone would not be able to use it for calls, texts, email, or the internet. Its 3G service had still been working and the 2G problem was marked up as “fixed” at 9.25am on Friday. As services returned to normal, Ronan Dunne, CEO, said he was “embarrassed” by the network fault, and worried

about the potential backlash. He blamed the disruption on a “piece of network hardware which manages the registration of handsets” and insisted such an issue was extremely rare. Disgruntled users took to social media to discuss the latest outage, with one Twitter user saying: “Got 02 problems. I got 99 contacts and I can’t text one.”

Hillsborough Investigation

27

P

olice officers could face c r i m i n a l charges over alleged changes to statements after the Hillsborough disaster. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said a “large number” of current and former officers would be investigated over what happened on the day of the tragedy in Sheffield in 1989 - and during the subsequent alleged cover-up. Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer said prosecutors would consider if there was enough evidence to charge any individual or corporate body with any criminal offence. The IPCC’s deputy chair Deborah Glass said: “I think I can confidently say this will be the largest independent inquiry that has been launched into the actions of the police in the United Kingdom.” Last month, a report by the Hillsborough

Independent Panel claimed that a shocking cover-up was staged in order to shift blame onto the 96 Liverpool fans that died. It alleged that 164 police statements were altered in the wake of the tragedy, 116 of them to remove or change negative comments about the

policing of the match and the ensuing disaster. Lawyers for some of the victims’ families have argued that corporate manslaughter charges should be levelled against South Yorkshire Police, Sheffield City Council, Sheffield Wednesday and the Football

Association. South Yorkshire Police, who dealt with the initial tragedy and West Midlands Police, who investigated how South Yorkshire handled the disaster.

Criminal & Misconduct Charges

Ms Glass said: “The potential criminal and misconduct offences disclosed by the panel’s report fall into two broad categories. They are the allegations that go to the heart of what happened at Hillsborough in April 1989 and individuals and institutions may be responsible for the death, that evidence was fabricated and misinformation was spread in an attempt to shift blame. We will investigate the role of South Yorkshire Police and West Midlands Police in these matters. This will mean that a large number of current and former officers will be under investigation, including Sir Norman Bettison, whose conduct was referred by the West Yorkshire Police Authority.” Following the publication of the report, a complaint was made to the IPCC that Sir Norman, who was a chief inspector in

South Yorkshire at the time, had supplied misleading information in the wake of the disaster. A second element of the complaint was over comments made by Sir Norman, currently Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, after the report was published. He said that Liverpool fans’ behaviour made policing the tragedy “harder than it needed to be”, sparking furious calls for him to resign. Sir Norman announced last week that he would retire in March, saying: “Recent weeks have caused me to reflect on what is best for the future of policing in West Yorkshire and I have now decided to set a firm date for my retirement.” He has welcomed the investigation. Margaret Aspinall, chairwoman of the Hillsborough Families Support Group said: “At this moment in time, I’m very, very happy. I think the families will be pleased to hear this. They’re going to look back into all the serving policemen on that day and I think that’s a great thing to do, because there were so many involved, I think, in the heart of that cover-up.”

hero Dog space Jump: Leap Record D aREDEVIL Felix Baumgartner has smashed through the sound barrier after leaping from the edge of space in the world’s highest skydive. The skydiver has made history by smashing the world record for the highest skydive after freefalling from 128,097ft.

a

DOG that lost its snout while saving the lives of two girls in the Philippines has been taken to the United states where vets hope to give it life-saving surgery. surgeons at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) veterinary medical teaching hospital have examined the dog named Kabang ahead of planned treatment. The mixed-breed dog has become a celebrity in its native Philippines, after she reportedly leaped into the path of a speeding motorcycle that was apparently just about to hit two young girls the daughter and niece of its owner - crossing a roadway in Zamboanga City, in the south west region of Mindanao. The crash took off the dog’s

snout and her complete upper jaw, but vets have been unable to treat the serious injury. A campaign to save Kabang was instigated by Karen Kenngott, a critical care nurse from Buffalo, New York, who spearheaded fundraising for the dog’s care. More than $20,000 was donated from a total of 20 countries in the online campaign to improve her quality of life. Kabang was given a special mass, a three-hour motorcade and 300 dogs attended a “despedida” send-off ceremony before her flight California. UC Davis surgeons performed an hourlong assessment and said the dog will need at least two surgeries, but are confident they can improve her condition. The first operation would focus on dental work and the second on repairing the gaping wound to her

face. The hospital said in a statement: “Contrary to some rumours there are no plans to fit Kabang with a ‘prosthetic snout’ or to replace her jaw.” The extraordinary journey of Kabang began nearly two years ago when Rudy Bunggal, 57, discovered the puppy abandoned in a paddy field. Mr Bunggal planned to keep the animal with the intention of fattening it up and feeding it to his family, but his daughter, Dina, 11, and niece, Princess, 3, grew close to the dog. They named her Kabang, which means “spotty” in their native Visayan language, and the dog became very protective of the girls. The “Hero Dog” as she has become known in the Philippines, even has a website – careforkabang. com – to explain her injuries and help gain further funds for medical care.

After two aborted attempts last week, the mission was given the go-ahead on Sunday morning with the co-operation of the weather. Baumgartner was carried up into crystal clear skies by a gigantic balloon that measured 30 million square cubic feet and whose skin was one-tenth the thickness of a sandwich bag. At the bottom of the balloon was a capsule, in which Baumgartner sat in his suit. The 43-year-old Austrian broke the record for the highest manned balloon flight after riding with the capsule 24 miles above New Mexico. He also achieved the fastest free-fall after reaching a top speed of 834mph (1,342km/h) and broke the sound barrier, according to mission spokeswoman Sarah Anderson. The heart-stopping event which was watched live around the world via YouTube, and viewers watched as Baumgartner stepped to the edge of the capsule and saluted the camera, before saying: “Sometimes you have to go up really high to realise how small you are.” The biggest risk Baumgartner faced was spinning out of control, which could have exerted enough G-forces to make him lose consciousness. At one point he appeared to have become unstable, but he managed to get himself into a flat, controlled position for the rest of the sky-dive. Temperatures of -68C (-90 Fahrenheit) could also have had unpredictable consequences if his suit had failed. He had been due to jump from 120,000ft, but the balloon went higher than expected, to just under 128,000ft. The previous record for the highest jump was held by Colonel Joe Kittinger, who jumped at an altitude of 102,800ft (31,333m) in 1960.

Bamgartner’s leap was watched by Baumgartner’s tearful mother Eva and by Col Kittinger, who co-ordinated the jump from mission c o n - trol.

C o l Kittinger told t h e man who went o n t o

break h i s record for the highest jump: “Our guardian angel will take care of you.” However, the Austrian was unable to break Col Kittinger’s record for the longest time spent in freefall. Baumgartner’s total of four minutes and 19 seconds fell 17 seconds

short. The reason for the shorter-thanexpected free-fall was not immediately clear, although live commentary during the leap uggested he opened his parachute at an altiude above the 5,000ft level that had been anounced in advance. The two-and-a-half hour journey upwards, uring which the curvature of the earth became visible and the skies gradually turned black, was matched with a rather more rapid descent. Three cameras attached to Baumgartner’s suit recorded his free-fall of just

over four minutes – which failed to break the existing free-fall record for duration – and then the parachute opening. Baumgartner later told a press conference: “When I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you don’t think about breaking records.” He admitted all he could think about was getting back alive, but added: “Sometimes you have to go up really high to see how small you are.” Asked what he wanted to do next, Baumgartner said: “I want to inspire a generation. I’d like to be sitting in the same spot in the next four years

as Joe Kittinger. There is a young guy asking me for advice because he wants to break my record.” He said the most exciting moment for him had been when he was standing outside the capsule “on top of the world”. To laughter, he added: “The most beautiful moment was when I was standing on the landing area and Mike Todd - the life support engineer who dressed Baumgartner in his suit, showed up and he had a smile on his face like a little kid.”Baumgartner said that he had come to feel like Todd’s son, adding: “He was so happy that I was alive.” Earlier, Todd had told the press conference: “The world needs a hero right now, and they got one in Felix Baumgartner.” Baumgartner has previously made a name for himself with acts of daring. The former paratrooper has parachuted off buildings and mountains and once into a 600 foot deep cave. He had already done two practise freefalls in preparation for this attempt – one from 71,000

29

feet in March this year and a second from 97,000 feet in July. But no feat can possibly have matched his jump above the town of Roswell, a suitably chosen place famed for its connections to UFO sightings. This was his last jump, Baumgartner has said. He has promised to settle down and enjoy his post-jump years with his girlfriend, Nicole Oetl, flying helicopters on rescue missions in the US and Austria.

apple Launches iPad Mini

a DaTE for your diaries?? apple has sent out invitations to an event in California on October 23 where the tech giant is expected to unveil the eagerly-awaited iPad Mini The invite comes with the tagline: ‘We’ve got a little more to show’ and it has been widely reported as the moment apple CEO Tim Cook will take to the stage and introduce the smaller iPad to the world.

The new Apple tablet is expected to feature a 7.85-inch screen, with WiFi connectivity only and come with 8GB, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of memory. It has been speculated the most basic model will retail for around 246 Euros, rising to over 615 Euros for the 64GB version. Better Facebook integration is also expected, along with a smaller dock connector and Apple’s iOS 6 software. The production of a

smaller tablet by Apple flies in the face of comments made by the company’s former CEO and founder Steve Jobs, who once declared: ‘The crop of 7-inch tablets are going to be dead on arrival. Their manufacturers will learn the painful lesson that their tablets are too small.’ The launch of the iPad Mini will come just over a month after the hugely successful iPhone 5 went on sale.

£21million for Clapton Painting

a PaInTInG owned by Eric Clapton has sold for more than £21m at an auction in London. The Gerhard Richter painting abstraktes Bild beat expectations and set a new auction record for the German abstract artist when it was bought for £21,321,250 at sotheby’s last Friday. The painting was bought by an anonymous buyer after a bidding war between two buyers that took over five minutes, until it finally sold to a round of applause for the hefty sum. The 1994 abstract oil on canvas from guitarist Eric Clapton’s private collection was expected to sell for

between £9m and £12m. The previous record for a Richter painting was more than £13m, in New York in May. Sotheby’s described Abstraktes Bild as a “masterpiece of calculated chaos” and a “paradigm of Gerhard Richter’s mature artistic and philosophical achievement”. Discussing the painting prior to the sale, Alex Branczik, senior director of contemporary art at Sotheby’s, said:

“Abstraktes Bild is one of the great abstract masterpieces by Gerhard Richter, and its appearance on the market presents collectors with the unique opportunity to acquire an outstanding work by one of the greatest living painters.” The German artist, aged 80, now produces both abstract and figurative painting as well as photographs from his studio near Cologne.

Feeling Depressed Mother has Dementia feel like this. My husband is so worried about me, but doesn’t know what to do, and neither do I. Helen, 40

I’ve been struggling for over ten years with a problem that I’ve no idea how to cope with. Every month or so I feel a dark cloud come over me and I lose all motivation to go to work, see other people, even to get out of bed. I’ve no real troubles in my life, nothing to get depressed about but still I

The human body is such a complex piece of machinery that there could be any number of reasons Helen. My initial thoughts were that this could just be PMT but I’m no doctor! What you need to do is make an appointment with your GP and give him as much detail as you can on the problem. Frankly, I’m amazed that you’ve let this go on for so long without looking for a medical explanation. Right now, this is affecting your whole life but the solution could be something so simple that you kick yourself when you finally discover it! Stop suffering and start working on getting through this. You’ll not only be helping yourself but also those around you by the sounds of it!

My mother suffers from chronic arthritis and is in the beginning stages of dementia. Since she fell ill and cannot cope alone, I’ve been looking after her. This means I’ve had to give up work and I’m starting to get into serious money trouble. I can’t bear to leave her in a home, but can’t continue this way. I have no money and very little social life either. Maggie, 56

It’s admirable that you want to help your mum and she’s clearly very lucky to have you

Pregnant by a stranger

I’ve been with my boyfriend for 3 years now. About two months ago I had a onenight stand after a drunken night out. I’ve just found out that I’m pregnant. I’m so worried because I’ve got no idea who the father is. I haven’t told my boyfriend yet. I’m so scared. What shall I do? Nic, 23

Worrying isn’t it? Perhaps you should have thought about all this before having unprotected sex with a stranger. Aside from the moral issues, you’ve exposed yourself and your unborn child to some very real health risks. Speak to

your local GUM clinic and arrange to be tested to make sure that you haven’t picked up something nasty. That’s the easy part, the hard part is working out whether or not to come clean with your bloke. If you’re happy to let your child grow up, possibly never knowing his or her real father then just keep quiet and hope for the best. On the other hand, if you have a shred of decency in you, face the music and tell your boyfriend everything. That way, you’ll be able to have a DNA test once the baby is born to determine exactly who the father is. This entire mess is your fault and although putting it right is a daunting task, in the long run, owning up now will save you, your boyfriend and your child a lot of heartache further down the line. People can and do make mistakes all the time, especially when alcohol is involved. Speak to your boyfriend and tell him this was a one off, with any luck, he will find it within himself to forgive you. Even if he doesn’t though, you will have done the right thing. Sorry if that’s not what you wanted to hear but it’s the truth!

but there has to come a point where you stop and think about the effect this is having on your own life. You won’t be in a position to help at all if you end up jobless and penniless. Start talking to your local council about getting in some home help or even the possibility of finding a care home for your mum. With the arthritis and now the onset of dementia, things are only going to get worse so you’ve got to change this sooner rather than later. Putting your mum into a care home would give her the 24/7 care that she needs as well as taking the pressure off you and giving you some space to sort out your money worries. I know it’s a horrible thought but it is inevitable I’m afraid. From what you’ve written, it seems that you’ve done everything you can to help so please don’t punish yourself. If you really want the best for your mum, you must start looking at all the options rather than carrying the weight of this alone.

sister Being Bullied

I think my younger sister is being bullied at school. She comes home upset every day but won’t say why and she never sees her friends anymore. It is so hard to see her upset but I’m not sure whether to get involved. I could talk to the school, or even the girls involved, but I know sometimes that can just make the situation worse. What shall I do? Carla, 19

Bullying of any kind can’t be ignored Carla, but I can’t help wondering why your parents aren’t dealing with this?

Speak to them and see if you can all sit down as a family to try to get to the bottom of things? Ultimately, your sister’s school should be informed if any bullying is going on and they should take the necessary steps to prevent it. Explain to your sister that you’re worried about her and even though she may not want you to get involved, you have no choice. Bullies get away with what they do because people allow them to so once you make a stand and get the ball rolling, things should improve dramatically. Your sister has probably been through an awful lot so keep reassuring her that you and your family will always be there with help and support. Whatever you do, don’t go chasing around after the culprits, let the school handle everything and ask them to keep you or your parents updated at all times.

Millionaire shortbread

Here’s a perfect little treat to go with that coffee break, to put in the kids packed lunch box, or even for petit fours after that little dinner party. I absolutely adore making AND EATING them of course, and yet they are really easy and impressive when made!

Ingredients 250g shortbread biscuits crushed 55g melted butter 150g butter 150g dark brown soft sugar 1 small tin of condensed milk (approx 400g) 200g dark chocolate Method Mix the crushed biscuits and the melted butter, press into a lined 20cm square tin. Chill for 20 mins. Next, heat the sugar and remaining butter in a non-stick pan gently, stirring, until melted. Add the condensed milk and

bring to a rapid boil, stirring continuously. Cook for a minute or so, or until the filling has thickened. Pour the caramel over the base. Cool, and then chill until set. Finally, slowly melt the dark chocolate, and pour over the caramel. Simply delicious! Tips/hints Why not melt a Milky bar and spoon dollops over the top of the melted dark chocolate - swirl it around to give it a lovely marble effect! Use hob knobs to give it that extra crunchy chunky base!

Now after two or three weeks of people coming forward, it looks as though he was an evil man who used his position of fame to abuse innocent children. I wonder how many other famous people will be involved in this scandal. I found a book on the internet, by Jimmy Savile, called “Stranger Danger” which is a guide for kids, through stories, to protect themselves from harm by strangers. How on earth did he manage to hide behind this screen of love and charity and yet get up to the things that have been alleged?

Be Careful, Someone Might Have Some Fun

The Pub Quiz is a 70’s baby. Noone quite knows where it started or why it became so popular so quickly. It could be a result of game shows becoming so popular on television. In 2009, a study put the number of regular weekly pub quizzes in the UK at 22,445. They are on the rise in the United States too and it is thought that there are currently around 2,000 regular weekly quizzes taking place there. I personally enjoy a good pub quiz and

even run two nights myself, just for the fun of it on my night off in Puerto de la Cruz at the Welcome Bar and at Zepps bar. It surprises me how competitive people can get and you have to take a grip of the situation as quizmaster and play God on occasion. I don’t give any half points, after all, how on earth can an answer be half right or half wrong. Anyway, the winning team at Zepps Bar included the bar owner Gillian and her crew. No doubt, next week, there will be a battle to beat them by one and all.

Getting On My Nerves

Here is a countdown of my top ten things that get RIGHT ON MY NERVES!

I find it absolutely incredulous that Arona Town Hall have found it necessary to make the horse and carriages that drive people around Las Americas illegal. They have been operating for over ten years albeit without correct permission. The mayor said that “the two existing companies didn’t meet the requirements demanded of them” and that there were complaints, especially the taxi drivers. Instead of robbing the town of something quaint and pleasant why didn’t they make it possible to make them fully licenced for people, just like a taxi. That’s a few more people on the dole because

of silly legislation. What could be more natural than a horse and carriage? When I was in England last year, we spent a day at Blackpool and had a ride in a horse drawn carriage. It was a great experience and I would do it again. In 1970, there was only one hotel in Las Americas. By the 80’s, the place had grown out of all proportion. I used to come here for the free feeling of the Island. There were many 24 hour bars and cafes. In the 80’s the old fishing houses on the front of Los Cristianos were quaint and I loved the place. Gradually the old places have gone and I think a little touch of nostalgia could have been saved. There should have been another way to deal with the problem.

10. Pens that run out of ink when you need them in a rush 9. People who eat with their mouths open like some sort of farm animal. 8. People who say “more better” or my “bestest”. Didn’t they go to school? 7. People who can’t wait to tell you about their illnesses. Every place has its own hypochondriac and I always end up meeting them. 6. Daily phone calls from idiots trying to sell me something I neither want or need! I wish they would go out and look for a proper job. 5. Banging my toe on

the leg of the bed. 4. Losing one sock when they both went into the washing machine together. Where do they go? Is there a special place that filters off one sock from every wash? 3. Ed Milliband. 2. Cutting myself

shaving when I am in a rush and having to leave the house with a bit of tissue attached to my face. 1. The bloke that needs to tell you endless boring jokes because he has nothing of any interest to say about anything.

JacK MontGoMerY in the Spotlight By Barry Sparkle

I am co-owner, writer and photographer for BuzzTrips. co.uk, a travel website that specialises in hiking and dining on and off the beaten track. I’m also coowner of the Real Tenerife series of travel websites; codirector of online lifestyle magazine, Tenerifemagazine. com; route checker and travel writer for a British specialist activity holidays company; a travel blog manager for UK based online travel company; author of two travel guidebooks and contributer to two more and I also regularly provide content for travel magazines and websites. WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I’m originally from the Island of Bute, an island off the West coast of Scotland that’s smaller than El Hierro. But after 17 years living in Manchester I also consider myself an honorary Manc. WHEN AND WHY DID YOU MOVE TO TENERIFE? I moved in 2003. We (my wife Andy and myself) were both working more and more hours per week and decided to step off the corporate ladder into the unknown. We’d planned to move abroad for some time. Tenerife with its year-round tourism seemed to offer potential. In the end it came down to a toss up between Tenerife and Sri Lanka. WHEN’S YOUR BIRTHDAY? December 30th... just. If my mum had held on 15 minutes longer I would have had the perfect day for partying to celebrate it each year. DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE FAMOUS? Nope, nobody knows me. Even my mother didn’t recognise me when we turned up to surprise her on her birthday when she was on holiday in France a few years ago. My name doesn’t go on a lot of what I write. ALTHOUGH YOU ARE IN THE LIMELIGHT DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE SHY? No, but I do tend to sound people out when I meet them for the first time which might come across as being on the dour side. IF YOU HAD A DIFFERENT JOB, WHAT WOULD IT BE? No idea; I took a psychometric test

once and it came out that I’d be no use in any occupation that involved caring for people. It concluded I should be a writer. WHO AND WHY IS YOUR IDOL? It changes; often it’s ordinary people who do extraordinary things like the guy who stood up to the tanks in Tiananmen Square, the Pakistan schoolgirl shot by the Taliban for campaigning for girls’ education... or Felix Baumgartner for being crazy enough to skydive from space. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST DISASTER YOU HAVE EVER HAD WHILST WORKING? When I was much younger a job I had involved working as a projectionist. On my last day, I downed a few jars before I had to screen a film. All I had to do was switch over a couple of reels, but too many pints left me dancing about bursting for the toilet just as it was coming up to the reel change. I had a choice of making a dash for the toilet and running the risk of the movie just stopping midway through a dramatic scene, or wetting myself. Well, I’ve always been a conscientious worker... WHAT IS YOUR TIPPLE? Red wine. But when travelling I’ll drink or eat anything that’s put in front of me. In Catalonia recently I was taught how to taste olive oil. That was interesting, it’s a bit like tasting wine, except you’re drinking olive oil. I can’t see it catching on. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SPORT? To watch; football. To do; swimming;

especially against the tide. HOW MANY LANGUAGES DO YOU SPEAK? Three at varying levels. Scottish, then English and Spanish... badly. HOW MANY HOUSES DO YOU HAVE? Just the one. WHAT TIME DO YOU GET UP IN THE MORNING? Seven-ish with the help of a coffee and then it’s breakfast on the terrace and start writing by about 8.30am until around 7pm. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? After a ridiculously short stint in the marines, I worked as a night porter (and look out man for amorous tour guides) in an old, creaky, Victorian hotel. But it was just too spooky, especially after I made the big mistake of reading The Shining whilst on duty. DO YOU DO CHARITY WORK? No. I work seven days a week. But some businesses I’ve had dealings with on Tenerife seem to think I am a charity. WHY DID YOU BECOME A WRITER? It’s what I always wanted to do. I feel an urge to write. In the job I had in the UK I wrote government reports and briefing papers for politicians, both of which involved research skills, working to strict remits and meeting tight deadlines - much the same as travel writing in many ways, so I’ve been writing in one format or another for a long time. Writing can be very therapeutic and a great way to relieve built up tension. It is an incredibly satisfying occupation plus I get to travel and do a lot of mind-blowing things. DO YOU HAVE A PRIVATE PLANE? No, but I have flown a Tiger Moth. DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS? I am privileged to have been adopted by an incredibly clever cat with half a tail who constantly outsmarts and manipulates me.

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? A long walk, soaking up the scent of pines and fresh mountain air in the Tenerife hills is always a tonic for the heart, mind and soul. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD? It changes on a regular basis. I like to try new things whenever I can and I’m lucky enough to get to eat in some pretty amazing places where talented chefs bombard your mouth with sensational flavours. If I had to pick a favourite cuisine, it would probably be Thai; eating good Thai food is like taking your taste buds on a walk through a perfumed garden in full bloom. WOULD YOU EVER GO “BACK HOME” I don’t really think of the UK as ‘back home’ now. There are too many other fascinating places to explore. WHERE WAS YOUR LAST HOLIDAY We’ve just come back from La Palma. However, although the trip involved eating in various restaurants, stargazing, hiking, wine-tasting and visiting all sorts of places, it was a work trip... honest. When you travel write I’m not sure you ever really have conventional holidays. TELL Us a sECRET aBOUT yOU! A few years ago I became immortal after undertaking a series of tests in the ghost city of Fengdu in China. DO YOU WEAR BOXERS OR BRIEFS? It’s got to be boxers. Have you seen Tom Cruise in Magnolia? He killed the wearing of Y-fronts stone dead. IF YOU WERE A BISCUIT, WHICH WOULD YOU BE? A fig roll – not as unappetising as people might think. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO EAT?

I love Mil Sabores in Puerto de la Cruz; everything on the menu screams ‘choose me’. I’m working my way through it. NAME ONE ACTOR/ACTRESS YOU WOULD LOVE TO GET NAUGHTY WITH? Angelina Jolie looks as though she knows what’s what. WERE YOU BULLIED AS A KID? Only by my older sister because she ate her sweets too fast and then had to watch enviously as I took an eternity to get through mine. That situation led to violence on occasion. IF YOU WERE GIVEN A CHANCE, WOULD YOU ENTER BIG BROTHER? Not a chance. IF I CAME TO YOUR HOME AND LOOKED INSIDE THE FRIDGE, WHAT WOULD I FIND? A lot of cheese, home-made jams and chutneys, chorizo, beer, cava (always have to be ready to celebrate – even though it’s cheaper than wine), orange juice, soya milk, anchovies, Thai curry paste, fruit and veg and a wee jar of Almogrote. WHAT’S YOUR BAD QUALITY? I know instinctively how to really annoy people. It’s a talent and I have to constantly keep it in check. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS? Voice of reason. WHAT MAKES YOU ANGRY? Injustice, racism, homophobia, xenophobia – most forms of intolerance. WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE DO YOU DISLIKE? I’m not keen on people who overdo the bull; maybe Tenerife’s not such a good place for me to live then when I think about it. WHAT´S THE MOST EMBARRASSING SITUATION YOU HAVE BEEN IN? I went to a spa recently where I was handed what I thought was a shower cap. It was a thong. There was a lot of potential for embarrassment with that whole spa experience.

and you More Thought surgery For Xfactor Katie UK Was Exciting!! Jordan’s face is starting to look more and more like the craggy old country she’s named herself after!!

simon Cowell’s world dominating talent contest “american Idol” has managed to make our own “Xfactor” dramas look like tame, polite disagreements, after Us judge nicki Minaj was interrupted by renowned diva and fellow judge Mariah Carey. Furious rapper Minaj responded to the rude interruption by branding Carey “boring as f...” and threatening to “knock her out and chop her head off” also claiming “if I had a gun I would shoot her!!!” Whoa there Nicki!!! With ratings for the UK Xfactor struggling maybe we’ve stumbled on the answer-”Xfactor fight club” in which judges are given a choice of weapon and every time Louis says “ you made that song your own”, the other judges take it in turns to beat the little Irishman senseless!! I’d definitely watch that!!

Is “Looper” the new “Matrix”?

“Looper” is the new scifi actioner starring Joseph Gordon Levitt who plays Joe, an assassin or “looper” who tracks down “marks” illegally sent from the future where time travel is possible but outlawed and only used by criminal organisations. Things get complicated when his latest assignment, played by Bruce Willis turns out to be his future self! Released 2 weeks ago, “Looper” has been met with rave reviews from audiences and critics alike with favourable comparisons to the Wachowski brothers 1999 smash hit “The Matrix” with “ near universal acclaim” earning such reviews as “ a remarkable feat of imagination and execution, entertaining from start to finish”. If you get the chance to see this movie I heartily recommend it, it’s one that keeps you thinking long after the credits roll!

Her obsession with cosmetic surgery is well documented but her constant meddling with her appearance seems to be having the opposite effect, leaving her looking much older than her 34 years due to a “ droopy looking mouth and drastically altered features”, a Harley Street Cosmetic surgeon said “I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s spent upwards of £50,000 over a period of years”. With more and more once natural beauty’s turning into Frankenstein style monsters due to unsuccessful plastic

surgery, isn’t it time we all accepted growing old gracefully instead of these showbiz beauty’s becoming rubber faced freaks that wouldn’t look out of place in 80’s fantasy film “The Dark Crystal”?

Canadian pop gerbil Justin Beiber has had his laptop stolen containing “personal footage” that within hours was leaked onto the net!! The picture that shows a young male performing a sexual act, who has not been confirmed as the “music “muppet (notice I only used inverted commas on the word music) although the person does appear to have the same tattoo, a bird on his hip. Beiber who like far more talented artist Lady Gaga, recently

vomited during a live stage performance, although here I sympathise as, if I was at a Justin Beiber concert, I’d probably vomit too!! Sorry if I’ve upset any “Beliebers” out there, as compensation, I’ve got some pictures you might like....

Beiber’s laptop thiever!!

TOMMO saVEs BaRRaCUDa BanDITs BLUshEs

Clouseaus Diamonds 9 V 1 Barracuda Bandits Diamonds handed out the Bandits their biggest thrashing since being formed, and well deserved it. Bandits never got going and defeat after defeat just made things worse until Tommo spared their blushes, but even then the black was potted from a snooker, against Bungalow conqueror Gary. It was a great night, the company was good, the food was good, but what happened to the rain that stopped the England match? the Bandits could have done with some similar divine intervention. Dos Hermanos 7 V 3 Lupain Great result for the Dos Hermanos team, three wins each for Neil & Viagra Pete, Lupain were outplayed on the night but will look forward to the return match, thanks for the meal cooked by Chef Karen. Target Bar 2 V 8 Legends A Not wishing to be outdone by their friends The Bandits, Target Bar came out in sympathy, and got themselves thrashed, thanks boys Nauta A 2 V 8 Bar Tasca A An error by Bungalow as he potted the black with his second shot gave Ray the game, and once again Ray T snatched defeat from the jaws of victory as he missed a straight black, a below par Grandad did the rest. Jammie

was under threat all the way as Joules had him by the balls (so to speak), yet again last ball jitters cost her dearly. No such problems for Jack as he produced probably the best performance of the night with a sublime shot to split his two balls and the black to clear up in some style. Much the same in the doubles, as a foul on the black gave the points to Tasca. Next game same again a foul on the black, points to Tasca. Simon made his comeback still with two broken feet played well and deserved a little more luck, but good play by Ian took the points. Revenge for Alex, as he easily disposed of Jack in this rematch. A great game by Joules yet again and a very lacklustre performance by Bungalow had him worried but then managed to pull through. John boy took the last frame in an evenly matched game. The deserved winners were Tasca, but not a true reflection in the score. A good night and Nauta may be bottom of the league, but HOW? Bar 180 A 6 V 4 Bar 180 C The first local derby in the new league between the bar180s, in which C team went 2-0 up but the A team fought back and won the the last 2 frames in which the C team were a little unlucky not to score in either. Fosters 5 V 5 Summerland Allstars Well Summerland said they wanted their name in the paper, they go 2-0 up at Fort Foster, then fall to 2-2! Even Steven’s on the doubles, then 2-2 on the last 4. Ends up a draw....but could have gone either way!!! Great game!!! Barracuda Hunters 5 V 5 Nauta B Erle potted both Black & White to give Nauta B the first frame, Helen our secret weapon took the second, Mickey lost to Steve Q, Both doubles were won by the Hunters, Klaus took the 4th &7th frame, then the Hunters just seem to collapse letting Nauta B take the last three frames making a well-deserved

sunday we saw some high quality darts matches during the Wild Bull Coast FM handicap KO Comps where the finals were played at Bar nauta. Just a reminder we have some of the best players on the island playing in our league. In the first game of the afternoon Target A played some great darts but Our Place A were on form . Our Place A won this match 4-0 but everyone agreed the score line didn’t reflect the course of the match. Del Boy vs Ray could have gone both ways: 100s, 140s, 125s were thrown consistently Our Place deserved to win but Target didn’t deserve to lose by such a high margin....Our Place went on to play Los Halcones winning again 4-0. For Our Place A to win the Losers’ round of the Handicaps Comps. Congratulations to both teams. The closest match of the day was Rood vs Target B. The score explains it all: 2- 2 in the singles, 1- 1 in the doubles. Both

draw as this was a well-balanced match with the two lower teams in the division. A good night was had by all. Leones B 5 V 5 Atlantis Crew Unlucky night for Leones B when they potted the black twice, however the bad luck was shared when Paul for Atlantis Crew went in off on the last shot of the night and lost the opportunity to seal the win. Great night as usual, roll on next week. Vivo 6 v 4 Sloop Bar The match began with one frame each and continued in a tense atmosphere, Vivo just managing to stay in front throughout. Victor clinching the final frame to claim the spoils, and keep up the pressure at the top. Well done to John (sloop), winning both his singles and the double.

Rippling Muscles A Formidable Win In Los Cristianos for CD Tenerife There was a smash and grab raid in Santa Cruz on Sunday with 8,471 witness’s as a lightning two goal opening from CD Tenerife paved the way for a 4-0 home demolition of Atletico Madrid B.

Getting out of bed is enough for most people on a Sunday morning but body builders will be pumped up for a 11 am start on 21 October in the A.E.F.F Copa de Canarias at the Auditorio Infanta Leonor in Los Cristianos. The contestants including Luis Vidal & Christopher Penny will be striking their best poses to catch the judges’ eyes and hoping that their dedication and hours of gym work will bring them to physical perfection. The official weigh takes place at Hotel Paradise Park at 5 pm the day before. Tickets for the competition are 10 euros from the Los Cristianos Cultural Centre or the Auditorium terrace bar.

Home Win a Must for Stagnant CD Marino

This Sunday could be a season defining moment for CD Marino; marooned at the bottom of the table with just two draws they entertain Alcala, the team just above them at 11 am. Defensive mistakes again haunted Marino in their 3-1 defeat at San Sebastian

de Reyes, Uruguayan Matias did his best to cover for suspended first choice goalie Alberto but they did little to trouble their hosts. Sanz and Gonzalez made it 2-0 by half time and Sanz scored again after the break leaving Marchena’s strike as a consolation. A win at their Las Americas home is vital to give Marino some much needed hope.

CB Canarias Chase First Basketball Victory

Still on the launch pad, CB Canarias are counting on home advantage to ignite their ACB basketball season at home to Real Madrid this Sunday at noon in La Laguna. A narrow 71-68 defeat at Blusens Monbus last week will have encouraged the yellows but their big guns failed to

fire and Richotti top scored with 12 points. Carles Bivia dropped out part way through the game with a tendon injury in his right leg and is doubtful for this week. Real Madrid is always a dominant force in Spain’s top league and is packed with international stars. A full house of around 4,000 will be hoping to see the form book torn up.

Running through the night 333 keen athletes will lead off the Tenerife Bluetrail as they head out of Los Cristianos port at 3 am on Saturday morning. In total 873 competitors will tackle four routes of varying difficulty but the 93 km Ultratrail is the most challenging as they head up through Arona, Ifonche, and Vilaflor on the way to an 11pm finish at Pinolere just above La Orotava. The routes will use as many of the traditional paths and tracks as possible to offer an insight into nature as well as a test of endurance. The Trail (56 km), MediaTrail

(20 km), and Trail Adaptada (4.2 km) start in La Caldera in the north but will also aim for Pinolere at the end of some punishing mountain slopes.

Tenerife Bluetrail Going off The Beaten Track

A late injury to Chechu promoted Suso to the starting 11 and he proved his worth by running at the visitors defence and cutting the ball back for Loro to hit the back of the net with just 19 seconds gone. There was little time to savour the moment before Loro turned provider to set up Aridane who pulled two defenders wide and slotted the ball past the keeper in the second minute. In form Atletico were viewed as a stern test but Tenerife oozed confidence and weren’t leaving any scraps for Madrid. Suso was a real handful and the only way Atletico could stop him was to bring him down, Loro converted the penalty with ease and the crowd were ecstatic with a 3-0 lead after just 17 minutes. Everyone was playing their part, Llorente and Martin created chances down the left, the defence and Medina in front of them frustrated Atletico and Sergio mopped up the few chances that got through.

Suso kept making a fool of full back Elbis but also found time and pace to back track and cover. Even the rock hard bread rolls tasted like a banquet at half time and the second half couldn’t come soon enough. Loro came close to completing his hat trick before making way for Josmar, the tricky Venezuelan is another crowd pleaser and was soon carving Atletico open with some speedy runs. It was

the perfect score line to give some fringe players a run out, Abel and Guillem Marti joined the party and made good contributions. In the final minute Guillem was brought down in the box and the penalty marked his first goal for Tenerife. The 4-0 win was just reward for an all round feast of good football and solid team work, it’s now a two point lead at the top of the table and Guijelo away this Sunday.

astro-barilina’s twisted horoscopes Aquarius 20 January - 18 February

A week of rest may be all you need for your broken leg to recover. Doctors may be stunned by a random discovery they make whilst examining you. Dandruff and bad breath is not the best way to ward off unwanted advances. Although, assuming that is your intention, you are definitely going about it the right way.

Pisces 19 February - 20 March

Opening up to a close friend will probably be the worst thing you could do, in your situation. Compact Discs are very shiny, but using them to attract seagulls in order to bludgeon them to death with your shoe is neither good manners nor entirely legal. Clarity of thought is something you need to accomplish today. Optrex is your lucky fluid for the day.

Aries 21 March - 19 April

Hat buying could serve you well today as a potential relationship sparks up in a hat shop. Specifically, you’ll be looking at hats. Your potential partner may be looking at gloves. You may discuss why a hat shop sells gloves.

Taurus 20 April - 20 May

Oil in your lamp may keep you burning till the break of day. Or it could spill over and set fire to your new shoes. Your footsteps will seem louder as you break in new shoes. However, this will not be a metaphorical sign of anything greater.

Gemini 21 May - 21 June Less than a year will go by before you realise that the love you are currently experiencing is unlikely to ever be shared by your idol. However, they will break their toe in a skiing accident, so all is not lost. Cancer 22 June - 22 July Avoid low-level lighting this week, and any power lines that you might have to pass under on the way to work. You might see a need for you to call attention to yourself, and we’re always happy to recommend faxing semi-nude pictures of yourself to random numbers. Leo 23 July - 22 August Every time you have a weird day you wonder whether there’s someone out there controlling your destiny. Is it possible for this kind of thing to happen by chance? You wonder. This week is going to be one of those weeks, though it is difficult to say whether it’s going to be a good one or a bad one. Virgo 23 August - 22 September Boom! And there goes the last piece of evidence that you were ever here...no-one will ever suspect. Any time you feel restless this week, try to imagine what it would be like to take Viagra and morphine at the same time.

Libra 23 September - 23 October

The odds are that you’ll see something today that you physically and desperately desire. However, it is similarly likely that you will fall flat on your arse trying to achieve it. Tragic love is all we have to share this week, when things go right they are awesome. When things go wrong they are the worst. Still, life’s got to have its ups and downs, don’t you think?

Scorpio 24 October - 21 November

Sid may be a lucky name for you this week. Sid may be a fighter pilot and he may be able to hook you up with anyone you fancy because he’s just “that” connected.

Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December

We can promise that you won’t die within the next two days. Chasing cats and dogs around the streets after midnight is probably not the best way to endear you to new neighbours. This week you may seem like an extraordinary opportunity to get even with the world, but the world may have different ideas.

Capricorn 22 December - 19 January

The light is coming closer and soon you will see exactly what the future holds with a special someone. The light is a little bit blinding though, so you might want to duck out of the way when it gets within touching distance, or possibly even turn around. But don’t turn around for too long or the light will be gone. We think it’s a light. I’ve discussed it with a few other astrologers and it’s either a light or a brick.
