Editorial

I have been at it again. I have made yet more changes to the paper, in response to readers asking for more content in our T.V. Guide. I have returned ITV2 and ITV3 back into the pages and moved it further back into the paper. So now you can read your favourite weekly paper without having to plough through the T.V. Guide first. Although we all mutter about X Factor, the majority of us can’t do without our weekly fix of the reality competition to

Tenerife Weekly - 26th October - 1st November 2012 find this year’s best singer. Talk of fixing is, as ever, present, together with the dramatics of judges walking off set as a demonstration of their disgust. It is all aimed at getting the year’s Number One slot in the British charts at Christmas. This year could be interesting though. The X Factor winner has failed over the past 2 years to gain the slot, and it looks like it will lose out again, this time to a Franciscan Friar. Alessandro Brustenghi has been working with Mike Hedges of Manic Street Preachers fame, and they look set to storm the charts with his debut Album. I, for one, wish him luck.

3

On a personal note, I was working out all of our Christmas and New Year schedules for the paper and for all the Christmas Parties we have planned, when I realised with horrible clarity that, ok, all sorted from a work point of view, but have absolutely no idea when I am going to find the time for buying presents and cards and getting them overseas in time. There are just 59 days left and I haven’t even started. Help!!!

See you all next week.

y l i e Minogue was one of around 200 celebrities and dignitaries who attended a function with Charles and Camilla

Charles receives a traditional Maori hongi from Bruce Simpson from the Ngati Ranana London Maori Club

as they prepared for their tour of Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea which starts in November as part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Tour.

Camilla with Kathy Lette and Vegemite

The sparkling event took place at St. James’ Palace and among the guests were comic Barry Humphries, soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, broadcaster and musician Rolf Harris, and former New Zealand rugby captain Sean Fitzpatrick. Miss Minogue, who surprised the guests with an unexpected concert, wore a stylish black evening dress and was joined on a stage by a guitarist and pianist. She performed three songs for Charles and Camilla, before singing Locomotion, when even Charles even pulled off some dance moves, she asked her audience: “The big question is, are you ready to swing your hips now?” She then told the royals: “Bon voyage, have a fantastic trip.” She later added; “I was very honoured to be asked and happy I could put it in the schedule. It was really great.” Camilla has never been to Australia and the singer jokingly rebuked her, saying “naughty Duchess”. Asked about the highlights of her home country, Kylie replied: “Whenever anyone asks where they should go in Australia then I say ‘What do you want?’ because

almost everything you want is there. It’s such a big, beautiful country that I was glad to see (it) on the list of some of the places they’re visiting - they’re really giving it a good old shot.” Talking about the experience Camilla may have in Australia, Kylie said: “I hope she has a beautiful warm welcome. I don’t hope - I know they will both enjoy the hospitality Australia offers.” Other entertainment staged for Charles and Camilla during the evening included a cultural demonstration by a Britishbased Maori group, who performed a traditional Haka. Rolf Harris said travelling 24 hours on a plane back to his homeland was too long a journey for him but added that the royal couple, especially the Duchess, would have a great time. He said: “I’m sure she will love it, it’s a fantastic country with a variety of things to see.” Comic Barry Humphries, best-known for his character Dame Edna Everage, joked about Australian Premier Julia Gillard, who caused controversy when she did not curtsey to the Queen during her visit last year.

Camilla with Barry Humphries He said: “They will have a wonderful time in Australia, if the Prime Minister can bring herself to curtsy.” Prince Charles and Camilla will have a packed schedule in Australia next month to mark the beginning of their leg of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Starting on Monday 5th of November they will be met by GovernorGeneral Quentin Bryce and Queensland Premier Campbell Newman on their arrival at Longreach. They will visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service to meet staff, view a demonstration and name a new aircraft, before attending a Community BBQ and flying to Melbourne where Charles will attend the Melbourne Cup and present the winning trophies.

On Wednesday, Charles will attend a sustainable urbanism seminar at the National Gallery of Victoria, whilst Camilla will be at a Government House reception for Osteoporosis Australia. In the evening the royal couple will be the star guests at a Diamond Jubilee community reception at Government House. Other highlights of the tour include a visit to the historic township of Richmond as well as a trip to a Sorell sheep stud farm. The couple are due to meet Prime Minister Julia Gillard, where the world will watch to see if she does indeed curtsey, although it seems unlikely. The couple will continue their tour when they leave to visit New Zealand on Saturday.

NEWS ON Wardrobe THE ROCK Malfunction

The 2012-2013 flu vaccination campaign is now underway and injections are now available, patients just need to ring 012 to make an appointment. Sanidad stressed that those in groups considered to be at special risk of complications from flu should make early appointments: supplies are available for 250,000 vaccinations. Groups considered at particular risk are health workers, over65s, chronically ill (e.g. Asthmatics, diabetics, those with heart conditions or immune system problems), pregnant women, and the morbidly obese (with a body mass index over 40). For more information, check the World Health Organization website: www.who.int/influenza/vaccines/ virus/recommendations. Jesús Dominguez Gonzales, missing since 17th October, has been found in Los Realejos in north Tenerife. Two locals called 112 yesterday after spotting him on the beach at El Socorro, where he was lying immobile, still wearing the same clothes he disappeared in, and clearly disorientated and dehydrated. He was transferred by ambulance to Clínica Hospiten Bellevue in Puerto de la Cruz, where his wife visited him immediately, but he was unable to recognize her. He has been kept in for observation. A Manchester flight carrying holidaymakers to Tenerife was forced to make an emergency landing after smoke filtered into the cockpit. The Thomas Cook flight, carrying more than 320 passengers to the island, was redirected to Dublin Airport after departing from Manchester Airport just minutes before. The captain made the decision to land his plane after he detected smoke trickling into the cockpit and all passengers disembarked safely. Emergency response crews were prepared and waiting for the plane to land – at least a dozen fire engines and ambulances were put on standby. Bankia, owners of la Caja de Canarias, is to launch a massive auction of more than 1,100 properties, with discounts of between 30 and 60% with prices starting at just 40,000 Euros. According to sources in the company, it is the largest auction ever organised by Bankia Habitat, the company that manages the real estate assets of BFABankia group. A new feature is that the auction will also include properties from developers. The ultimate goal is to speed up property sales. The Canary islands received 750,780 foreign tourists during September, bringing the total number of tourists visiting the islands so far this year to 7,370,000 according to a survey carried out by Frontur and released by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism. This shows a slight decrease of 0.4% when compared to September 2011, which is due to lower tourist arrivals from the UK. In Spain, during the first nine months of the year, 47 million people visited the country, an increase of 3.8% over the same period in 2011. 2013 is due to be a horrific year. So says the President of the Canaries, Paulino Rivero, in a speech which he gave in Parliament in an attempt to prepare everyone, from the highest public servants to ordinary residents for what is going to happen next year “Many” of those who work in the public sector, he said, must begin to think in terms of not being able to continue working in the administration. If there had been any lingering doubt about maintaining public employment in 2013, Rivero killed it stone dead. Cuts in Madrid’s regional funding, the next Presupuestos Generales del Estado (PGE), mean that even the situation we have come to know and increasingly fear over the last few years is nothing as to what is going to come. Already, some chemists are stocking only absolute medical essentials because they are on the verge of bankruptcy with Government payments months overdue; public transport, including ferries, is threatened because of Government payments overdue; fire fighters are threatening strike action if guaranteed funding is even touched, as the Government is beginning to suggest A sail boat adrift with five people on board, three adults and two children has been rescued from the waters of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria by maritime rescue troops. The 12 metre vessel got into trouble after engine failure and drifted about 13 miles east of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. It could not sail back to the island due to lack of wind. The rescue operation lasted several hours and ended with the boat being towed back, with all on board safe and sound.

for Miss Tenerife 2012

C

oNSTANZA Márquez was crowned as the new Miss Tenerife 2012, but a spectacular dress failure left her embarrassingly exposed as she stepped forward to claim her crown; the straps of her brand new frock broke and exposed one of her breasts to the audience. Unluckily for Ms Marquez, everyone noticed audience and judges alike.

The spectacular gala, held over 2 nights in Lago Martiánez, in Puerto de la Cruz and it was a mind blowing event. The first thing that caught your attention was the floating stage designed especially for the event, in the middle of the main pool. However, it seems that the organisers did not take into account the strong October wind that caught up the water and bathed both the stage and the audience. An added difficulty for the contestants as the floor was extremely slippery. Following the presentation of the jury and the first musical performance of the night, the swimwear parade began featuring all 26 candidates in strict alphabetical order. The theme was futuristic and featured a white bikini with silver. After the first parade, the jury made their first cut, down to the final 12. During this deliberation, the audience were entertained by Tenerife singer Aridian. The twelve semi-finalists

selected and with high hopes of being crowned were the Misses of Aguere, Buenavista, Gout of G, Granadilla, La Matanza, La Orotava, La Palma, Nooctua, Playa de las Americas, Puerto de la Cruz, Seritene and metropolitan area. Some members of the public were unhappy with the selection and some even left the event altogether. More musical performances, followed, this time Tenerife singer Ke’anae, whose song “Mascarita”, was the main theme of the 2012 Santa Cruz Carnival and had the audience dancing to the Latin sounds.

The second parade of the night had the contestants dressed in evening gowns, all designed by Porto Sergio López and Itahisa García, named among the ten best designers of the 2012 Miss World competition. All the dresses featured grey with silver glitter and transparencies, and small feathers highlighting certain areas. This led to the second cut of the evening, down to 6 contestants. The familiar questioning of the finalists was, as always, the girls saying what they think the judges and audience want them to, with the usual nerves playing a

large part of their responses. They then thanked the organisation, their families, friends, boyfriends and anyone else they could possibly mention before going on to emphasise what good candidates they would be for the Miss Spain pageant. The great moment arrived and Constanza Márquez, was crowned, after fixing her dress, as Miss Tenerife 2012, by the outgoing Miss Tenerife 2011, Sirelis Corujo, before congratulating her successor, thanking the other contestants and closing this year’s eventful gala.

British woman arrested over Rhino horns theft

A

B r i t i sh w o m a n has been arrested in Tenerife for allegedly taking part in a theft of rhinoceros horns from a museum in Germany to sell for use in traditional Chinese medicine. The un-named 37 yearold, was detained on a European arrest warrant and handed over to German police. She is suspected of being part of a gang that stole rhino horns worth 50,000 euros (£40,000) from the Offenburg museum in south western Germany last February in what police describe as an “unbelievably audacious” robbery. Two people distracted staff at the museum while another two climbed onto a display case, removed a rhino head from a wall and

smashed off its horns with hammers. Two other British members of the gang were arrested earlier this year and sentenced to three years and two and a half years respectively in a German prison. Another gang member was sentenced to four weeks in a juvenile

detention centre for his part in the robbery. Museums across Europe have been increasingly targeted by rhino horn thieves as populations of the animals diminish in the wild, with some museums attempting to deter robberies by replacing the horns with fake ones.

The rhino horns are prized in Asia where they are considered to be an aphrodisiac and contain disease fighting properties. A single horn can fetch up to £200,000 on the black market. The horns are ground down into a powder and used in a variety of different

remedies. Driven by soaring price of rhino horn of the black market, the animals are increasingly targeted in the wild. In South Africa, where 90 per cent of the wild population of rhinos live, 455 white rhinos had already been killed this year. There are thought to be less than 20,000

animals left in the wild. Scientists say the horn, which is ingested in powdered form, has no proven medical benefit. “You’d get the same effect by chewing your fingernails,” said Nigel Monaghan, keeper of the National Museum of Ireland.

Telefónica Opens New Data Centre

T

elefónica has launched a new data centre in Granadilla, which will be used for data connectivity services and IT solutions such as Cloud. According to local media, the company invested 3m Euros in the infrastructure. The area has been chosen to attract American and European companies interested in the African market. The data centre in Granadilla is the latest to open; there are other Telefónica data centres in Madrid, La Rioja and Barcelona. “Telefónica already has six data centres, where we offer servic-

es to customers such as infrastructure, storage, backup and colocation services,” Paul Oscar, product manager of accommodation said. “The data centre is located within the Canary de-

ployment NAPWACI (now known as the D-Alix NAP). Instead of making a new infrastructure, we are leveraging existing facilities and services we have deployed,” Oscar said.

The Telefónica managed data centre occupies an area of 1,000 m2 and stores data from enterprise and government customers. It connects to the operator’s network through optical fibres,

to prevent data loss in case of disruptions. Telefónica offers virtual private networks and ultra-wideband connections and cloud, housing, hosting, backup and storage.

Drugs TrafďŹ cking Ring Stopped in Arona

PoliCe have arrested 29 people involved in drug trafficking that introduced cocaine into the iberian Peninsula and the Canary islands from South America, code named operation Sulphur. In an investigation that started in Tenerife, in November 2011, agents seized 52 kilograms of high-purity cocaine, several vehicles, as well as various banking assets and properties owned by the criminal group, whose operation was spread over Tenerife, Barcelona and Valencia. The members of the group had one of its bases in the South of Tenerife, namely Arona and had a laboratory to process and mix the drug

in a house in Buzanada. The guards carried out two raids in Buzanada and many others in Cabo Blanco. The network, composed of Spaniards, Colombians, Ecuadorians, and Ukrainians, was led in Tenerife by M.E.Q.M., 31, who in addition to supply part of the illicit market for cocaine in Tenerife through small distributors, managed to introduce an important infrastructure for processing and adulteration (cutting) the narcotic substance that came “in the rough to the Peninsula. During searches of Arona there were nine arrests and about 700 grams of cocaine already processed and prepared for sale was seized, as well as another six kilos

of chemicals ready for cutting. Traffickers had advanced systems of telecommunications, vehicles and abundant documentation concerning its financial unit. Officers dismantled the clandestine laboratory, which was hidden by the Organization as a registered home. That House in Buzanada remained guarded by two individuals who were living in unsanitary conditions, as they were exposed to various toxic components used for the adulteration of drugs. A judge ordered those arrested be remanded in custody. The ringleader of the organization in Europe, P.E.G.V., of Ecuadorian nationality, was arrested by Dutch police in

Amsterdam, thanks to a European warrant issued through Interpol. The drug makers established businesses in tourist destinations, such as Cancun, to divert police attention, either

pretending to be tour operators, or posing as honeymooners. In other cases, traffickers used older people or women who said they were prostitutes and who were looking for work in

new clubs. Operation Sulphur also foiled the introduction of larger quantities of drugs through containers and large ports of trade in goods, such as Rotterdam or Amsterdam.

Another box of old and unwanted spectacles that can change lives!

Los Cristianos opticians, San Clemente Opticas, in Av. de Suecia had once again managed to fill a Lions’ collection box with old and unwanted spectacles donated by their customers for the Lions Recycle for Sight programme. Tenerife Sur Lions Club member Margaret was there to receive them from Pepe and express grateful thanks to the rest of the staff, Laura and Ana, on behalf of the Lions and for those who will ultimately benefit.

The 153 Million Reasons Why Lions “Recycle for Sight”

According to The World Health Organization, 153 million people have uncorrected refractive errors (near-sightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism). Most of these vision impairments are quickly diagnosed and easy to treat with corrective lenses. Still, millions of people in developing nations are pushed deeper into poverty simply because they don’t have glasses. They can’t learn, because reading is difficult. They can’t work to the best of their ability, because they can’t see clearly. For children, clear vision means a better education, healthier development and a better quality of life. For adults, it means greater employment opportunity and economic strength. For seniors it means less dependence on others.

Changing Lives, One Pair at a Time

International Lions sponsor a worldwide collection and distribution of used spectacles to third world countries where the re-

cipients are not interested in the fashion statement of the frames, but in the lenses to let them have sight. As part of this effort the Tenerife Sur Lions Club are collecting unwanted spectacles through their charity shops and other participating supporters. When the staff of San Clemente Opticas, were approached to help they readily agreed to ask their clients to donate their old and unwanted spectacles to this with the result that they are now on their way to filling a third Lions collecting box. Is your home like so many where you can find a pair of spectacles that are no longer being used?

“I’ll just keep these as a spare pair” ........sounds familiar? And so into a drawer they go never to see the light of day again. Did you know that those same pair of spectacles can change another person’s life? So why not clear out that drawer and drop that “spare pair” into one of the Tenerife Sur Lions Charity Shops and change a life. You can find Tenerife Sur Lions Charity Shops in Costa Silencio & Los Cristianos To find out more about “Recycle for Sight” go to the Lions Club International website at www.lionsclubs.org/EN/our-work/ sight-programs/eyeglassrecycling/index.php

TeNeRife Sur lions Club were very pleased when Wingate School, Cabo Blanco in the south of Tenerife agreed again to participate in this prestigious lions international Poster Competition to represent the south of Tenerife.

man Goodall MBE and his wife Edna were part of the judging team along with Shelby Healey, art teacher at Wingate School. Downs Association Annual Lunch

oN Sunday the 21st of october lions President Norman Goodall MBe along with representatives of the lions “Dream Holiday” project team were invited as special guests to joined some four hundred plus supporters of the Down Syndrome Association at their Annual fund Raising lunch. Also present that afternoon, adding her support to the Association was Margarita Pena Machin, president of the Institute for Social Care and Insular Sociosanitaria, an adviser delegate to the Tenerife Cabildo. The Down Syndrome Association (Association Trisomicos 21) does

incredible work supporting the children in teaching and helping them to develop the everyday life skills they need in today’s society. Each year the Tenerife Sur Lions Club “Dream Holidays” project provides and organises holidays for underprivileged and life challenged children. This year was no exception with a number of children and their carers from the Association joining others for a week’s holiday in the United Kingdom. It was a special moment when Efrain Calpote of the Association presented mementos to Norman and team member Margaret which had been painstakingly made by the children at the Association’s school. The Lions “Dream Holiday” project team are very conscious of the fact that

these holidays are only made possible through the generous support of local businesses and the tireless efforts of Lions members and volunteers in the Tenerife Sur Lions charity shops so it is all the more appropriate that a very big word of thanks goes to everyone involved.

Spain’s Social Security Deficit SPAiN’S social security system is set to register a deficit of 10.5 billion euros, 0.9% of the gross domestic product, in 2012 compared to an initial forecast of a balanced budget, according to a document sent to the european statistics office eurostat by the Treasury Ministry. The government presented its 2012 budget in March and said the public social-security system would end the year in balance,

The new social security figures cast more doubt about the capability of the government to update pensions payments in line with inflation, a move expected in November which may cost up to 5 billion euros. However, Treasury Minister

Cristobal Montoro said the change would not have any impact on the country’s overall deficit because the central government would take steps to reduce spending accordingly. Spain’s public deficit is set to reach 7.3 per cent of gross domestic product this year, including one-off capital injections into ailing banks worth about 1 per cent of GDP.

Poverty levels in Spain

One in every five resident lives in poverty in Spain, new figures have reported. The national statistics institute INE said 21.1 per cent of the 47-million population currently lives below the poverty line, meaning they live on less than 7,355 euros per year. It is a slight improvement on last year,

when the percentage was 21.8 per cent. This apparent improvement, however, is mainly due to the increase of elderly people whose pensions constitute a stable income, INE said. The number of children aged 16 and under living in poverty has increased to 21 per cent from 19.4 per cent in 2011. Families’ medium annual income has dropped by 1.9 per cent to 24,609 euros. The number of households having difficulties covering their costs increased to 12.7 per cent from 9.8 per cent. About 44 per cent of Spanish families cannot afford to go on holiday. Foreigners are more at risk of becoming poor, 26.2 per cent, than Spaniards, 19.8 per cent of whom are at risk. Charity organizations have warned about the growth of poverty in Spain. The

country is experiencing its second recession in three years, and unemployment has rocketed to nearly 25 per cent. Critics have partly blamed Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s austerity

policies. They nevertheless received the backing of voters on Sunday in elections in the north-western region of Galicia, where Rajoy’s People’s Party (PP) increased its absolute majority in the re-

gional parliament. Galicia has managed to keep its budget deficit low, unlike the central government, which is struggling to trim it from 9.4 per cent in 2011 to 6.3 per cent this year.

Fossil Nest Found in Spain A BiRD’S nest has been discovered in Spain, with at least five eggs that scientists believe belonged to an ancient flamingo around 18 million years ago. The nest was found buried in a limestone block in the ebro Basin in north eastern Spain, and the researchers think it was abandoned and sank to the bottom of a shallow, salty lake, which was once home to snakes, turtles and crocodiles, before being covered in mud and fossilizing during the early Miocene.

Scans of the eggshell fragments revealed microscopic features that match those of the modern flamingo’s eggs. However, the type of nest the eggs sit in is very different from the ones the birds build today. Modern flamingos make muddy volcano-shaped nests which hold a single, large egg in each, but this ancient nest was made from twigs and leaves and holds several eggs. Researchers have said that the nest looks more like those of modern grebes, diving birds that build floating platform nests, and which typically hold three to eight eggs and are anchored to the

bottom of a lake with aquatic plants. Though they have very different reproductive and nesting behaviours, flamingos and grebes are closely related. This new fossil might prove that the grebe-style nest is ancestral to this group of birds and that, over time, modern flamingos developed their volcanoshaped nests.

No Pictures Spain’s opera star Caballe Please

SPAiN is considering b a n n i n g photographing, filming or reproducing images of police and state security forces when they are on duty. Spain’s interior Minister Jorge fernandez Diaz said the government is considering prohibiting the capture, playback and processing of images, sounds or data of security forces while “in the exercise of their functions.”

Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria said after months of television and Internet scenes of sometimes violent clashes between police and

suffers stroke

demonstrators, a balance had to be struck “between the citizens’ right to protest” and the need “to uphold the integrity of state security forces.” The government’s plans were announced a day after Spain’s director general of police, Cosido Ignacio, said efforts are under way to secure the ban.

At the government’s weekly Cabinet news conference, Saenz de Santamaria was repeatedly asked by journalists from several media organizations how this would affect press freedom. “This is a complex issue, but we will try to find a balance,” she said.

SPANiSH opera singer Montserrat Caballe, aged 79, has suffered a minor stroke and broken her arm in whilst in Russia. She was subsequently flown home from hospital “We have had her in since Saturday. She came from Russia by plane and was brought here by ambulance on arrival,” said a spokesman for the Sant Pau hospital in the soprano’s native Barcelona. Caballe has toured the opera houses of the world and came to mainstream prominence when she recorded a song with Freddy Mercury for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. The spokesman added that Caballe was recovering and had been “conscious the whole time”

since the stroke, which made her feel dizzy and fall, breaking her upper arm. “She is conscious, talking and has not lost any of her faculties,” said the spokesman, adding that she would be kept in hospital at least for five days.

Penelope Cruz, Cover Girl PeNeloPe Cruz latest cover for Vogue Spain proves it is nigh on impossible to take a bad photograph of the 38-year-old actress. The actress is featured on the black and white November cover in a look that definitely harks back to classic bombshells. Sexy bustier? Check. Teased updo and winged-out eyeliner? Check and check. Penelope’s even got an old-school crucifix in the Tom Munrolensed shoot -- definitely the definitive touch. The dress is from Armani Prive’s autumn collection. This cover follows hot on the heels of her W magazine, September issue, where she was pictured also featuring a crucifix. Since Penelope is in a league of her own when it comes to beauty, we thought it would only be fitting to pit the star against herself in a magazine cover war. So check out both crucifix-centric covers and see which one you prefer.

More Rain in Spain

THe powerful storm that caused flooding in Spain’s north eastern region has resulted in the death of three people missing. emergency teams in Gerona province found the body of a woman in the sea near to where a 37-year-old Polish citizen went missing after he was swept away by a wave while on the beach at lloret de Mar. emergency management teams are also searching for a frenchman in his 20s who has been missing since he went fishing on a rocky coast near the town of Rosas, also in Gerona. Authorities issued an alert that waves of up to 2.5 meters (5 feet) will strike the entire Catalan coastline last weekend,

along with strong winds and heavy rain. Locals were urged to take extreme precautions all along the coast and to stay away from breakwaters and esplanades along the seashore. Aragon was also affected by the heavy rains, at least three towns suffered flooding and widespread material

damage. Firefighters worked in the area where torrential rains raised the water level of a river until it flooded houses and stores and damaged cars parked along roadways. The Navarre region also alerted citizens about the risk of overflowing rivers which blocked traffic on five highways where flooding has occurred.

Water Extraction Caused 2011 Earthquake

13

G r o undwat e r extraction from agriculture and industry that lowered a nearby aquifer helped trigger an earthquake in Lorca, Spain, in May 2011 that killed nine people, according to a study published Sunday in Nature Geoscience. The 5.1 magnitude quake was triggered after a 820foot drop in groundwater from pumping since the 1960s ruptured the Earth’s crust along the Alhama de Murcia fault line, according to a study in Nature Geoscience by Pablo Gonzalez of the University of Western Ontario. The shallow-depth quake at 1.2 to 2.5 miles in one of the

highest seismic risk areas in Spain was “human-induced” by groundwater changes. The results imply that anthropogenic or man-made activities “could influence how and when earthquakes occur.” The Nature Geoscience study

suggests “the stress change induced by water extraction in the Guadalentin basin may have done more than advance the time of an earthquake that would have happened anyway,” Jean-Philippe Avouac from the California Institute of Technology said. Scientists

have known for decades that pumping water into the Earth can set off small earthquakes. But this is the first time that removing water has been identified as an earthquake trigger, researchers said. “The fact that the very tiny stress changes due to

normal processes, such as the extraction of groundwater, could have an effect on very large systems such as faults, that’s very surprising,” said Pablo González, lead study author and a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Western Ontario in Canada.

to promote its first princess with Hispanic-inspired roots. “They seem to be backpedalling,” said spokeswoman Lisa Navarrete. “They’ve done such a good job in the past when they’ve introduced Native American, African-American and Asian princesses. They made a big deal out of it, but now they’re sort of scrambling. It’s unusual because Disney has been very good about Latino diversity. Little girls look to these characters to see themselves represented. If they don’t see themselves, it makes a difference. It would be nice to see Disney make a full-out push for a Latina princess, whether it’s Sofia The First or not.” Craig Gerber, the co-executive producer of the show, said Sofia was a “mixed-heritage princess in a fairytale world”. Her mother and birth father respectively hail from kingdoms inspired by Spain

and Scandinavia, although Sofia was born and raised in Enchancia, a “make-believe melting pot kingdom.” The voice of Sofia is Modern Family actress Ariel Winter, a Caucasian, while her mother is played by Hispanic Grey’s Anatomy actress Sara Ramirez. The film and a subsequent TV

series will follow the young princess as she adjusts to royal life after her mother marries the King of Enchancia. “Sofia considers herself a normal Enchancian girl like any other,” said Gerber. “Her mixed heritage and blended family are a reflection of what many children today experience.”

Disney Junior executive Nancy Kanter added: “It is a fairytale and storybook world that we hope will help spur a child’s imagination. It’s one where we can have flying horses, schools led by fairies, songs that have a Latin beat and towns with markets like those found in North Africa.”

alt Disney has been defending its newest princess after critics said her Hispanic-influenced ethnicity was not Hispanic enough. Their brand new animated character Sofia stars in the TV movie Sofia the First: Once Upon A Princess. It is due to be broadcast on the Disney Channel and Disney Junior in the US in November, with a TV series to follow next year. Hispanic advocacy groups are questioning whether the fair-skinned, blue-eyed young princess is an accurate representation of the Hispanic population. The Washington DCbased National Council of La Raza - La Raza means “race” - asked why Disney was not doing more

Ford Slashes 1,400 Jobs

CAR manufacturer ford has confirmed it will make 1,400 employees redundant in the UK following the closure of two of their British factories.

The US company’s Southampton plant in Swaythling, which has made Transit vans since 1972, will close next summer with a loss of more than 500 jobs. Fords stamping plant in Dagenham, which presses sheets of metal used to make the vans in Southampton, will be shut down at the same time. It marks the end of more than a century of vehicle production in the UK by Ford, which will now only make engines and other car parts in Britain. The move comes after union representatives met with company

management. The national officer of the GMB union, Justin Bowden, described it as devastating for Ford’s British workers. “This is very bad news for UK manufacturing,” he said. “Ford’s track record in Britain is one of broken promises and factory closures. There will be a feeling of shock and anger, and Ford’s commitment on investment will cut little ice.” Conservative MP for Romsey and Southampton, Caroline Nokes, said described the news as a “bitter blow” for the region. “It is critically important that we do everything we can to help those affected,” she said. “The closure will have a significant impact on employment. These 500 employees have broadly similar skills and it is very important

that they are given the maximum support possible.” But Ford, which employs 11,400 people at sites across the UK, is also expected to announce some good news for its British workforce. The

company will safeguard thousands of jobs by confirming that the next generation of diesel engines will be built in the UK. The carmaker is in the process of restructuring its European operations following a slump

in demand, and on Wednesday announced that it would close its “under-utilised” factory in Genk, Belgium resulting in 4,300 job losses. The chairman and chief executive of Ford of Europe, Stephen Odell,

said: “The proposed restructuring of our European manufacturing operations is a fundamental part of our plan to strengthen Ford’s business in Europe and to return to profitable growth.”

Malala Shooting Suspect is Named Police are attempting to track down a 23-yearold Atta Ulah Khan who they have named as the prime suspect in connection with the shooting of Malala Yousafzai, the teenage activist who spoke out against the Taliban.

Khan is a chemistry student from the same area as Malala, his mother, brother, and fiancee have been arrested, as well as six other men in connection with the shooting. Although the suspect’s relatives are not accused of involvement, a senior police official is reported to have said. Alam Zeb, the principal at Jahanzeb College where Khan is studying for a physics degree, said Khan had given school officials three or four dates of birth. He condemned the attack and said he was surprised to hear that a former student may have been involved. 15-year-old Malala became a symbol of courage after being shot in the head by the

Taliban earlier this month for demanding education for girls. She is now being treated in Britain, at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham for further specialised treatment. The hospital has said, she continues to make steady progress and is in a stable condition after she was

admitted a week ago following initial treatment in Pakistan. She had been able to stand with help for the first time in hospital and was “communicating very well”, according to Dr Dave Rosser, medical director of the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

wandered into woods where trappers were able to grab it when it sat down next to a tree. It was taken to an animal hospital to recover from the effects of the dart. Shannon Fowler, the daughter of 60-year-old Elizabeth Fowler, who was bitten by the monkey, said it had been shot as it tried to take bananas from a cage that had been set up to capture it. Dr Don Woodman,

of the Animal Hospital of Northwood, said: “Previously I used ketamine, I gave him enough that it should have brought down a Tampa Bay Buccaneer line-backer, and he just shrugged it off. ”This time I used a combination of Telazole and Dextomator and it worked nicely.” The 2.5m-long cage, containing bananas as bait, was left near Mrs Fowler’s house after the attack, but

Facebook Monkey Captured

A wild monkey which recently bit a woman in St Petersburg’s Lake Maggiore neighbourhood has been shot with a tranquiliser dart by authorities after they had been hunting it for over 2 years. The monkey, which had apparently been taunting them from its Facebook page, was finally captured after it

the monkey had repeatedly got away despite its trapdoor. Another plan to capture the fugitive primate was to place another macaque in a small cage with some food to lure the animal into captivity. Mrs Fowler, who was bitten on the back and neck two weeks ago, reportedly cried as the monkey was shot and taken away. “We got to say goodbye, He was still out and I was like ‘Oh Lord, when

he wakes up, he’s gonna be mad’.” On the Mystery Monkey of Tampa Bay’s Facebook page, members of the public tried to console the nowcaptured primate. Alice Mae Lewis wrote: “Poor little fella! At least you got a taste of freedom. Most monkeys never get that.” While Barbra Lewis said: “Look at the bright side, now you might be able to mate.”

T

wo Olympic heroes have had their medals stolen just hours after attending a Buckingham Palace event to celebrate of their success. Rower Alex Partridge and hockey team member Hannah Macleod took to social networking site Twitter to appeal for information after their bronze medals went missing. Partridge won bronze as part of the men’s eight rowing team. He also tweeted that his Olympic blazer had also been stolen from a club in Mayfair, central London. Macleod wrote on the site: “My medal was also stolen at the same time. Totally devastated.” Both athletes later published a photograph of a man captured on CCTV who they wished to talk to about the alleged thefts. Partridge said: “To the chap who took my @ London2012 Olympic Blazer & Medal last night. The police have u on CCTV Please return it.” Macleod said she was not looking for punishment; she just wanted the medal back. “If you picked up a Bronze Olympic medal that isn’t yours pls just send anonymously back to GB hockey-Bisham Abbey,” she tweeted. Reports of my Death Are Exaggerated

ATTeNDeeS at Brazilian funeral were stunned when their relative, Gilberto Araujo, 41 arrived at his own funeral after a mix-up when the dead body was identified.

The funeral of the car washer was being held in the town of Alagoinhas in north-east Brazil when Gilberto walked in. His brother Jose Marcos had identified a body at the city morgue as being that of his brother and it was taken to their mother’s home for a wake. Gilberto rushed to his mother’s house after bumping into a friend in the street a few hours before the ceremony, who told him his family were in mourning. “He went to his mother’s home to let everyone know he was very much alive,” police inspector Roberto Lima said. A family friend revealed “some people fainted and others were so scared they ran away” when he arrived. “It was a big shock.” Mr Araujo’s sister-in-law Ana Paula explained: “The confusion started when news started circulating that a car washer

had been shot dead. “Police called my husband and told him that his brother had been killed and his body was at the morgue.” Gilberto’s mother Marina Santana told reporters: “I am overjoyed. What mother wouldn’t be after being told that her son is dead and then sees him alive?” The man who was actually dead was named as Genivaldo Santos Gama. Mr Lima said the confusion was “understandable”. “The two men looked like each other and both worked as car washers,” he said.

Skyfall Premiers in London R

oyAlTy and stars graced the red carpet for “the best Bond film ever”, Skyfall. Daniel Craig plays the role of 007 for the third time in the 23rd movie in the series, which comes 50 years after the first Bond film, Dr. No which starred Sir Sean Connery. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall

joined Dame Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marloh and Ben Whishaw for the world premiere at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The Bond’s famous theme music was played as the royal couple arrived on the red carpet and were met by producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli before they were introduced to the cast. The Prince hailed Bond as

“the most famous secret service agent of all time”. At his request, all proceeds raised from the screening will benefit charities that support members of the intelligence services. Skyfall is the first Bond film to be directed by Oscar-winning Sam Mendes. He said: “You just try and make the best movie you can... and we’ve had some good response. about it.” Asked about the latest gadgets in the film, Craig explained: “Well, we’ve just got the best team in the world... a wonderful creative team.” About director Mendes h e

raved: “I just thought he was the man for the job, plain and simple. He allowed me to relax, allowed me to get on with my job. It was just a pleasure to have him. He’s done an amazing job.” And asked if he was enjoying being Bond, he said: “You can’t not enjoy this.” He was also full of praise for No Country For Old Men star Bardem, who plays the film’s baddie, saying: “He’s created one of the

best Bond villains there is, I think.” Dench, who revealed she had yet to see the film, said M bossed Bond around all the time, jokingly saying her character “is appalling isn’t she?”. Describing the script as “wonderful”, Dench said the enthusiasm over the film “has been just lovely, that’s been really lovely”. She, too, was full of praise for Mendes, saying he was a “terrific film director

... thrilling to work with”. And she agreed Craig was also special to work with, as was Bardem, joking: “How spoilt can you be?” Asked for her opinion on how the Bond franchise had been going so long, she mused: “Isn’t he just very British? Isn’t he a hero that we love ... and a daredevil, all those stunts and things? I think it’s lovely - and exciting.” Sam Mendes said that working on a Bond film

19

was special because of “the scale of it... what it means to everybody else, how excited people are. You feel like you’re looking after something that’s public property. You have to look after it properly.” He explained: “I just wanted to make a film that I would love to see. I also wanted to channel my inner 13-yearold boy, see if I could get back in touch with him again.”

Ridiculous Phone Insurance Claims THe top ten weirdest mobile phone insurance claims have been revealed by a mobile phone insurance company.

They include a farmer in Devon who said his phone had disappeared inside the back end of one of his cows. He said he had been using the torch on his iPhone while helping the animal during calving. He later said he had retrieved the phone, but it was damaged. Another weird claim came from a woman in Nottingham who said she had baked her Nokia 6303i into a Victoria Sponge cake. Further bizarre claims include one woman who said she had been walking

her Cocker Spaniel on Barry Island beach in Wales, when a seagull swooped and snatched her Samsung Galaxy from her hand. A man in his 30s said he had been filming monkeys from the car window at Longleat Safari Park with his HTC One X when one of the animals snatched it after jumping onto the roof of his car. Meanwhile, a couple claimed for their missing phone after dropping it over the side of a cruise ship while trying to recreate a scene from Titanic. Other phone mishaps included a pyro technician who claimed he left his iPhone 3GS within the “blast zone” as he set up a show for the National Fireworks Championships

in Plymouth. It was nowhere to be seen when he returned after the show, he said, having gone up in smoke as part of an amazing display. A 40-year-old builder said his iPhone 4S had fallen out of his back pocket when he pulled his jeans down to use the loo — but he had not noticed the mishap until he had

finished his business and flushed the toilet. A woman in her twenties, from Liverpool, admitted she had thrown her HTC Desire X at her boyfriend when she discovered he had been cheating on her. The errant bloke had ducked and the phone missed him and hit the wall, breaking the handset. And a Blur fan who

claimed that rather than pay £60 for a ticket to see his favourite band in Hyde Park, London, he had tried to film the performance from up a nearby tree but, in his excitement, he had dropped his iPhone. But perhaps most bizarre of all is the claim of a Bristol woman in her late twenties who argued that the vibration function on

her BlackBerry Bold 9900 had stopped working while she was using it as an “adult toy”. 30 per cent of all mobile phone clams are fraudulent. 67,000 mobiles were lost or stolen during 17 days of the London Olympics. 80 arrests for fraudulent claims were made in first six months of this year.

Missing Ben; Police Find Toys

P

olice have found parts of toys that Ben Needham may have been playing with on the Greek island of Kos before he went missing. The samples were found by archaeologists supporting a team of investigators at the spot where the toddler went missing aged 21 months. Inspector Colin Hope, who is part of the specialist search team, said: “We have found small parts of what look like tiny cars. We have found some wheels, we have found a

bonnet. But we have also found plastic bits of toys like little heads from dolls and that kind of thing ... a whole range of toys really, including the sort of items we are looking for.” Ben was known to have had a couple of toy cars. It is not yet known whether the items, which have been shown to the Needham family, belonged to the toddler. Excavators have now dug two metres below ground and archaeologists say they have reached the level the ground was at when Ben disappeared in July 1991. Dr Nicholas MarquezGrant, an archaeologist from Oxford University, said: “What I am trying to look at in general crime scene work is graves, for

example. What I am doing here is to establish what the natural layer of soil is. We know from maps and databases what we are looking for - particular layers of a certain colour.” Police are raking and sifting soil dug up by a JCB on a hillside location

Clock Tower Lit For April T he clock tower in missing April Jones’ home town has been illuminated in pink, exactly three weeks since the youngster disappeared. The 24m-tall landmark in Machynlleth, mid-Wales, was lit on Tuesday night at 7pm, the time five-year-old April went missing on October 1. She was last seen playing near her home on the Bryn-y-Gog estate. The clock tower stayed lit for 12 hours. Pink was chosen because it is April’s favourite colour. In the countryside around the town, the search for the schoolgirl continues. Dyfed Powys Police say 150 specialists are scouring local mountainous terrain and checking caves, potholes and mines, in the hope of finding the youngster. The hunt could last until Christmas or beyond. April’s disappearance has shocked the people of Machynlleth, many of whom

joined the search for the youngster in the days after she was reported missing. Earlier this month, more than 700 people joined a procession through the town to St Peter’s Church,

where an emotional service was held. Many of those in the congregation wore pink ribbons, which have also been tied to gates and lampposts in the area. Chinese lanterns have also been

released in the weeks since her disappearance. Mark Bridger, 46, from Machynlleth, has been charged with April’s murder and

abduction. He was remanded in custody until January 11 after appearing via video link at Caernarfon Crown Court on October 10.

Cardiff Hit & Runs

M

ATTHeW Tvrdon has been c h a r g e d with the murder of a motherof-three during a series of hit-and-runs in Cardiff and remanded in custody. He has also been charged with 13 counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault and dangerous driving. Tvrdon, 31, is accused of deliberately running down parents and young children in the ely and leckwith areas of Cardiff. District Judge Bodfan Jenkins remanded Tvrdon in custody. The suspect will appear at Newport Crown Court later via videolink.

Police are investigating the hit-and-run rampage in which a mother of a disabled child was killed, after a mystery car was seen driving on the wrong side of the road shortly before the crashes. Karina Menzies, 32, was killed and 14 people, five of which were children, were injured

when a driver brought terror to roads in Cardiff. Police are also investigating reports that he deliberately knocked people down in the Welsh capital with a white Iveco van. Detective Superintendent Paul Hurley confirmed reports that the suspect left his vehicle and physically assaulted people between the crashes and also carried a weapon. The officer said: “We are aware the suspect assaulted people outside his vehicle,” and he added police were “looking to identify and recover” the weapon. He said no firearm was involved and there was no suggestion anyone had been stabbed. The horrific events began when police received calls about an incident in Crossways Road in Ely. This was soon followed by other reports of hit-and-run collisions in several locations in the west of the city, including Grand Avenue, Cowbridge Road West and the Leckwith Retail Park. One eyewitness reported a woman being dragged along underneath the vehicle suffering terrible injuries Mr Hurley urged witnesses to get in touch and asked for information about a

black Renault Clio seen driving on the wrong side of the road of Western Avenue, not far from Cowbridge Road West, where one crash happened. There were no full registration details for the Clio but officers said it carried on 05 plate. Seventy officers are working on the investigation It later emerged that Ms Menzies’ child is on a “dream holiday” in Florida and did not know about the tragedy. Friends of Miss Menzies have expressed their grief on social networking sites. Facebook user Katy Johanna Benson wrote: “Rest in piece (sic) Karina Menzies. Sleep tight beautiful angel and may the scum responsible for this

senseless, evil murder be brought to justice. Cant (sic) imagine what her family are feeling.” Ely sub-postmaster Shady Taha, 29, served two girls and a young woman moments before one of the hit-and-runs in Grand Avenue, immediately outside a row of shops. He said the two girls, aged about 10, and a woman in her mid20s had been browsing the birthday cards in the store before buying a jar of coffee and leaving. “All of a sudden I heard a bang. I looked out and across the road one girl was on the floor and the other girl was screaming,” he said. I heard a van speed off but I did not see it.” Other

residents said pedestrians were deliberately targeted by someone driving a van. Ramesh Patel, who runs RM Patel Convenience Stores on Cowbridge Road West, said: “I was in the shop working at the time so I didn’t actually see anything but customers have said a white van purposely drove at people. Obviously, when someone tries to run you down deliberately that is frightening, not pleasant at all. I was working here in the store so I didn’t see that myself but that is what most people who have come in here have said. People seem very shocked.” Superintendent Julian Williams said the suspect was

arrested while driving a white Iveco transit van and was taken to Cardiff Bay police station. “Whether the actions were deliberate or reckless is a matter for the inquiry and the person will obviously be spoken to,” he added.

Google Launch G

ooGle is releasing a new low-priced Chromebook laptop just as rivals Microsoft and Apple release their latest gadgets. The new lightweight computer will sell for around £200 in the UK and $249 in the US. The laptop is made in partnership with Samsung, who make smartphones and tablet computers, which use Google’s Android software. The Chromebook, which does not have a hard drive, will run on an operating system linked with Google’s Chrome Web browser. It functions like a terminal dependent on an Internet connection to get to information and applications stored in large data centres run by Google or other technology providers. It is the least expensive Chromebook that Google has released in the two years that it has been working on the product l i n e . Google and Samsung released a slightly more sophisticated Chromebook priced at $449 (345 Euros) last spring. Now

it appears to be trying to get ahead of its rivals. Microsoft is poised to release Windows 8, a dramatic makeover of its famous operating system, on October 26. And Apple says it plans to show off a new product at an

Google shares plummeted by a massive 8%

version of its iPad. “This is a big step in the journey for us,” said Sundar Pichai, Google’s senior vice president of Chrome and apps. “I think it’s generally an exciting time in the computing industry. However, computer analyst Carolina Milaesi says: “Despite the low price, the new Chromebook will face a hard time winning over consumers because it is not set up like a traditional PC with a hard drive. A lot of people are going to see it and think, ‘Once I have it, what exactly do I do with it?’” she predicted. Like tablets, the discount Chromebook will rely on a computer chip design known as ARM, instead of Intel microprocessors. The ARM architecture is more energy efficient, extending the duration of

batteries between charges. With an 11.6in (29.46cm) screen, the new Chromebooks also will have a larger display than tablets selling in the same price range. The laptops will be set up to automatically use all of Google’s services, including its search engine, Gmail and YouTube video site. Google also is offering 100 gigabytes of free storage on computers kept in its eight data centres.

Google’s Value Plummets

Google shares plummeted by a massive 8% after the premature release of third quarter earnings figures spooked the global market. Google saw up to $20bn wiped off its market value after third quarter earnings figures were released too early by a financial printer. The internet search and advertising giant, which recently overtook Microsoft Corp to become the second-largest US technology company, reported a 20% drop in net income to $2.18bn (£1.36bn) between July and September. But the announcement, which was expected after the market closed, was released early after financial printer RR Donnelley filed a draft of its earnings statement without authorisation. The resulting panic led to $19.8bn (£12.33bn) being wiped off its value by the market close and trading being halted on the Nasdaq after losses prompted the share price to plummet by up to 10% at some stages.

Buried Alive but Survives

T

he luckiest dog alive? Ethan, a Jack Russell terrier had a “miraculous” escape in France after being poisoned and buried alive on his third birthday. He was dug up by a man who saw the ground moving, the dog was having convulsions from poisoning. Fire fighters then rushed the trembling, dirtcovered terrier to a vet who managed to nurse him back to life. “It’s extraordinary. We only see this in TV movies,” said veterinarian Philippe Michon. “He came back to life and was without a scratch. It’s rather miraculous.” The vet said the dog was “completely cold” and

“barely breathing” when he was brought in. He used hot water bottles to warm up Ethan’s seemingly lifeless body. The dog was so cold his veins had collapsed and it was hard to find one to hydrate him, but within 24 hours the terrier was back on his feet. “Ethan had an unbelievable chain of luck. If the ground hadn’t trembled, no one would have taken a shovel to it,” the vet added. Police are investigating his owner who says he had given the dog away, said Sabrina Zamora, president of an animal association in Charleville-Mezieres, a town 125 miles northeast of Paris. She described Ethan as being as “flat as a pancake” when he was discovered on Tuesday near a lakeside pedestrian path.

Monk Takes Eton Rap On X Factor

An Italian friar is taking on The X Factor in the traditional race for the U.K. Christmas number one. Franciscan friar Alessandro Brustenghi lives and works as a carpenter and tour guide at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi, a hilltop town in northern Italy. But now the tenor is on track to top both the classical album chart, and the specialist classical charts. The 34-year-old landed a record deal earlier this year working with Mike Hedges, producer of the Manic Street Preachers and The Cure, on his debut album, Voice from Assisi. “I have been overwhelmed by the reaction and the warmth of the people to this album, and feel the connection to so many

hearts in a communion of beauty and joy, through music,” he said. Record bosses at Decca are hoping to capitalise on his popularity and will be releasing a single in time for Christmas which would then go headto-head with the song released by this year’s X Factor winner. But because he has taken a vow of poverty,

all monies earned by the friar will automatically go to charity even if his single is a huge hit. Last year the Military Wives deprived X Factor winners Little Mix of the festive accolade, and in 2009, Joe McElderry was stopped by Rage Against The Machine after a massive Facebook campaign against manufactured artists.

A group of pupils from Eton College, inspired by hit single Gangnam Style; a track released by South Korean rapper Psy, have released their own version and posted it on YouTube. Psy’s hit, known for its catchy beat became an instant hit watched by millions of people. The pupil’s version, Eton Style, parodies public perception of the college and its pupils. The boys are hoping their song goes some way towards repeating the success of Psy. Lyrics include: “Awkward, frustrated, lonely, and insecure. We don’t like conflict with other people. Coz if you push us then we’ll just break down and cry.” They add: “We’re not too social, can’t talk to women, although we try, we’re just too shy.” The video features local landmarks including Windsor Great Park, Windsor Bridge and the Long Walk leading from Windsor Castle. Tony Little, headmaster of Eton, confirmed that the

teenagers were pupils at the school, adding: “This is a self-deprecating piece of fun by some boys who are parodying themselves.” Fees for the worldfamous Berkshire school are among the highest in the country, and Princes

William and Harry as well as Prime Minister David Cameron are among its former pupils. A couple of weeks ago, Psy became the first South Korean artist to make it to number one in the UK singles chart with Gangnam Style.

Vauxhall’s managing director Percy Kidner bought the now classic car new in November 1903, and the family of its second owner, who bought it the following year, have owned it since. It was used regularly until around 1920 and underwent major refurbishment in 2001. Director of the Bonhams UK Motor Car department, Tim Schofield, said: “This is the first time in 108 years this historic landmark vehicle has been offered on the open market. We believe it is the oldest surviving Vauxhall, which makes it a very important motor car and a great addition to what is shaping up to be a fantastic auction at

Suncream Recall

B

ottles of the spray-on Banana Boat sunscreen have been recalled following reports that some people have caught fire after applying the product and coming into contact with open flames. St Louisbased Energizer Holdings revealed it was withdrawing 23 varieties of UltraMist sunscreen off store shelves due to the risk of the lotion igniting when exposed to fire.

The recall includes aerosol products such as UltraMist Sport, UltraMist Ultra Defence and UltraMist Kids. There had been five reports, four in the US and one in Canada, of people suffering burns after using the sunscreen in the last year, a company spokesman said. “The problem appears to have been caused by a spray valve, Energizer said in a statement. As a result the lotion is taking longer to dry, which raises the flammability risk. If a consumer comes into contact with a flame or

spark prior to complete drying of the product on the skin, there is a potential for the product to ignite.” UltraMist’s label warns users: “Keep away from sources of ignition - no smoking.” But

Marriage: The Final Frontier

O

ne couple have boldly gone where no other have gone before by tying the knot in ‘Britain’s first Klingon wedding’. Jossie Sockertopp, 23, and Sonnie Gustavsson, 29, travelled from their home in Sweden to marry at a Star Trek convention held in London last weekend. The couple, who met four years ago, were inspired to hold the ceremony after watching an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, in which Klingon character Worf marries science officer Jadzia Dax in a traditional Klingon ceremony. “We saw the clip from the series where the Klingons get married and we thought it was very romantic about beating hearts and a battle for each other. We really liked it, that’s why we want to do this,” Ms Sockertopp said. The bride ditched a traditional white dress for a floor-length red robe with a diamante headdress, matching her husband-to-be. Prosthetic

foreheads with deep wrinkles and black manes of hair completed the look. Three bangs on a gong ushered the bride and groom to an altar decorated with screens and a throne made from animal bone and hide. The celebrant, Peter Wyllie, conducted the wedding ceremony and included some phrases in Klingon, the gutteral-sounding language spoken by the Star Trek characters. “We spent a bit of time with a couple of people who were professional Klingons and they checked it through with me but after that it was just hope really,” Mr Wyllie said, adding that it sounded similar to the Welsh language. It was the second wedding in two days for the couple, who had a legal ceremony at a registry office in Sweden on Thursday. Both weddings had been kept a secret from their families until a few days before the newlyweds jetted to London. They will spend their honeymoon at the convention, which sees all five captains from the Star Trek TV series appear on stage together for the first time.

Catfight in Lottery Make Downing Street THe National lottery in the U.K. has created 3,000 millionaires since its launch in 1994 and most of them kept the majority of their winnings in the UK, so says a new study analysed by forecasting consultancy oxford economics.

With their winnings, the new millionaires have bought 7,958 homes, 17,190 new cars, the most popular being an Audi and 300 caravans. The favourite holiday destination was the United States and almost one-third of those questioned have invested in a Jacuzzi in their home. There have been a further 3,780 millionaires created as most of the winners have shared their good fortune, amongst their children, family and friends. The study also revealed 98% of the winners spent remained within the UK economy, winners’ spending contributed almost £750m to the UK and generated over £500m in tax receipts for the UK Exchequer, while 900 businesses employing 3,195 people have been set up using lottery money. Andy Logan, co-analyst and author of the report from Oxford Economics, said: “The effect of a win spreads much further and wider than we anticipated, not

Firework Crash Charge

G

e o f f R e y Counsell, 50, from Somerset, has been charged with seven counts of manslaughter after a fatal pile-up on the M5 during thick fog. Counsell was operating a fireworks display at the nearby Taunton Rugby Club when the crash happened in November 2011. A total of 34 cars were involved, seven people were killed and 51 others injured. Lorry drivers Terry Brice, from Patchway, Gloucestershire, and Kye Thomas, from Gunnislake, Cornwall, both died in the crash along with father and daughter Michael and Maggie Barton, from Windsor, Berkshire, grandparents Anthony and Pamela Adams, from Newport, and battle reenactor Malcolm Beacham,

from Woolavington, near Bridgwater. Amongst those badly injured on the north-bound carriageway at junction 25 was Emma Barton, 19, who woke from a five-day coma to be told her father and sister had been killed.

A statement from Avon and Somerset Police and Crown Prosecution Service said: “Since the collision we have worked closely together to investigate the circumstances of the collision and to carefully consider all

the evidence. This has been a complex process which has also involved working with Taunton Deane Borough Council and seeking the views of expert witnesses. Having considered the evidence in line with the Code

for Crown Prosecutors, the CPS decided there was sufficient evidence to charge Geoffrey Counsell, the provider of the fireworks display at Taunton Rugby Club on the night of the collision, with manslaughter.”

The statement added there was insufficient evidence to prosecute for driver error or the culpability of Taunton Rugby Club. Counsell is due to appear at Bristol Magistrates’ Court on November 12.

‘i shouldn’t have told her about cheating hubby’

A few months ago I found out that my friend’s husband was cheating on her. I had full proof because he admitted it to me himself. I debated for ages about whether to tell her and decided recently to bite the bullet and do it. She went mad at me and told me to stop interfering in her private life. I’m so upset and just wish I hadn’t got involved. How can I get myself out of this situation? eva

What’s done is done Eva, there’s no point in crucifying yourself over it. Your friend is bound to be reeling from the bombshell you dropped but, in time, she’ll get over it. Give this woman some space to get her private life in order but

make sure she knows you’re ready and willing to be on hand if she needs you. If you push her too much now you’ll only be seen to be meddling even further so you really don’t have a choice do you? At the end of the day, if she patches things up with her husband, and you’re right about his cheating, she will, undoubtedly, catch him out in some other way. I know it must be frustrating for you but you’ll just have to wait and see how things pan out wont you?

My best friend is getting married in six months and she’s planning a hen do in Las Vegas. I’m really worried about this – firstly, because I’m really not into clubbing, and secondly, because I can’t afford it. My boyfriend and I have just bought a house so money is so tight and my friend knows this. I don’t want to stop her having the hen do that she wants but I have to break the news that I won’t be there and that’ll upset her. Kelly

Everybody is feeling the pinch these days so I would expect a lot of the girls with an invite are in exactly the same situation Kelly. Your friend has to be allowed to do what she wants to do but she also should be prepared for the fact that some of the girls wont be able to go to The States! You shouldn’t feel bad at all but you should also respect your friends wishes and accept this is her choice. A good friend would completely understand and I think once you have the conversation, you’ll be surprised at

‘i can’t get over my car crash’

Since I had a car crash a year ago, I’ve been having horrible dreams all the time. Someone was killed in the crash, which wasn’t my fault, but I can’t get over it. These nightmares are taking over my life. I wake up exhausted and it’s affecting my work. I had counselling after the event but I don’t think it helped at all. Kristy Some people respond well to counselling whereas others don’t! You should seriously think about speaking to somebody about your feelings again Kristy. Its clear that you need to do something to turn things around isn’t it? There can be so many factors that determine exactly

what a person gains from therapy. It could have been too early for you first time or it could be that you just didn’t get along with the counsellor who tried to help you. Have a chat with your GP and see what your options are but above all, try to accept that you can and will get past these bleak times. We all react differently to traumatic events so you’ve got to stop convincing yourself that something is drastically wrong with you. In most cases, with the right help and sufficient time, most people are able to completely recover. Good luck.

how easy it is. What’s the alternative? It would be crazy to get into debt just to keep the peace wouldn’t it? The problem is, the longer you put this off, the more difficult its going to be so it really is time to bite the bullet and speak to this girl. Try to avoid any kind of confrontation, just be completely honest and take it from there, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

‘i get violent when i’m drunk’

I’ve always found myself getting angry and violent when I’m drunk. I went out with work colleagues the other night and we drank a lot. I ended up arguing with the bar man and kicking off with a girl in the toilets. I was so embarrassed that I didn’t go into work for the next three days and pretended to be ill. I know I should just stop drinking but it’s easier said than done when all my friends would wonder what was wrong with me. Maria Are you for real? You seem to be telling me that the shame and embarrassment of being a violent drunk is easier to handle than a few jibes about being teetotal! Being stupidly drunk doesn’t agree with you, end of story! If you can’t

cut back enough or even stop drinking completely, I doubt you’ll have many friends left in a year or two anyway. You could do far worse than speak to Alcoholics Anonymous about your experiences. For me, your insistence that giving up drinking is “easier said than done” is starting to ring alarm bells. You may not rely on booze 24/7 but I suspect that you need it more than you think. You need to stop thinking about this and actually do something positive.

Witches Fingers When we had our bar “The Majestic” in Puerto de la Cruz i made these little puppies’ for our Halloween party. They went down a storm.. This is a traditional biscuit recipe that i have used for years. All i did was change the shape to make them look like fingers. The biscuits make a great conversation piece. our customers loved them! ingredients: 225g (8 oz) butter, softened 125g (4 1/2 oz) icing sugar 1 egg 1 teaspoon almond extract 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 350g (12 oz) plain flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt 100g (4 oz) whole almonds strawberry Jam to decorate

Method:

Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder and salt, continually beating; chill for 20 to 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 160 C / gas mark 3. remove dough from fridge in small amounts. scoop 1 heaping teaspoon at a time onto a piece of greaseproof paper. use the paper to roll the dough

into a thin finger-shaped biscuit. Press one almond into one end of each biscuit to give the appearance of a long fingernail. squeeze biscuit near the tip and again near the centre of each to give the impression of knuckles. You can also cut into the dough with a sharp knife at the same points to help give a more finger-like appearance. arrange the shaped biscuits on the baking trays. Bake in the preheated oven until the

biscuits are slightly golden in colour, 20 to 25 minutes. remove the almond from the end of each biscuit; and put a small amount of jam in the cavity; replace the almond to cause the jam to ooze out around the tip of the biscuit.

Tips hints:

i usually add a little bit of green food colouring! You can typically use any basic biscuit recipe!

Clang, Clang, Clang Went The Trolley

Back when i was a kid in the late 60’s, bottles of pop had a deposit on them. you would finish the pop and take it back to the shop to get 5 or 10 pence back on the bottle. it was a sensible idea and it was the green way to do it. I have never understood why this excellent way of recycling was abandoned and I think the government should force it back on makers of products that are put in glass containers. Another thing that was perfectly normal back then was to carry a shopping bag or a shopping trolley. I always associated a shopping trolley with older women and a shopping bag with my mum or grandad. How times changed. Shopping bags almost disappeared as the shops all started supplying carrier bags. Now, to save money, under

the disguise of being kind to the environment, shops are starting to charge for carrier bags and the good old shopping trolley is making a comeback. I wouldn’t personally want to drag one all over town unless it was bright pink with diamante crusted handles, but there are some really trendy designs out there now. What used to be the untrendiest item you could own has suddenly become quite the fashion. If you take a look online at “www. thetrolleyrevolution. com” you will see a wealth of fabulous shopping trolleys by the Rolser Company who are described as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of shopping trolleys.

Old Wives Tales

Hardly a week goes by without hearing of someone drowning, or more rarely but more thankfully being rescued from drowning, on Tenerife’s beaches. This year is no different to many, though more active reporting of the issue might make it seem as though it is a particularly bad year for these tragedies. The reason that it is being reported more is to bring a particular problem to public awareness. Cold water shock, unbelievable as it sounds considering that we don’t have what people would consider “cold” water, can be fatal in Tenerife. Experts say that it can affect people even with water temperature of up to 25º. It’s not just freezing water that is dangerous, and scuba diving specialists say that the Canaries’ water temperature

doesn’t get above 24°C (75°F) even in August. People sunbathe and then go in the water where they can get into difficulties within five minutes. Some have sensitivity to “cold” water, and this increases with age, which might account for why so many of these fatalities or near fatalities are middle aged or older. Even those who have no such sensitivity as such can produce one by drinking alcohol. Have a quick look at www.seakayakermag. com/2008/Feb08/cold-shock.htm, which is typical of many professional level websites giving advice on cold water shock. Let’s hope somehow we can cut the numbers down in Tenerife because this happens year after year.

Avenger Celebrities that Nearly Got it on on the Rock!!

Norse god Thor must be sick of the icy corridors of his palace in Asgard as i can reveal Thor himself, Christopher Hemsworth, is on our fair island!! The Hollywood hunk is visiting his wife, Spanish model and actress Elsa Pataky, who is currently filming “Fast and Furious 6”, reprising her role as officer Elena Neves from “Fast 5”. Now is a good time for spotting movie beefcakes as fellow “Fast and Furious” actors Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and Paul Walker are all here!! Special thanks to Stefania Roberto “paparazzi” Phillips for the photo showing the celebrity couple with their baby daughter India Rose in McDonalds!! So Thor eats Big-Macs, who knew?

Unusual Suspects

As the Jimmy Savile story continues to gather pace every day as more and more shocking details make the headlines, i can exclusively reveal that the “Jim’ll fix it” star is merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to 80’s children’s T.V. celebrities and their sordid criminal activities, i must warn you, some of the following content may disturb you. “Tiswas” star Bob Carolgees was a despicable monster who regularly subjected his dog “Spit” to acts of cruelty, so much so that during his long T.V. Career, he was never once seen walking the pet, instead imprisoning

him on his left arm and manipulating the poor dog in an inappropriate manner. Rod Hull, now no longer with us, smuggled exotic bird eggs into the country, reared one of the chicks and then trained the emu to attack celebrities for his own entertainment and finally the husband and wife “comedy” act The Krankies swindled the government out of thousands of pounds in child support when for years, the female member of these criminal masterminds led a double life pretending to be “Jimmy Krankie”, their mischievous son. I would like to add that although I’m making light of this story I truly hope that Savile is rotting in hell, fandabidozee!!!

Pop rock heart-throbs Mcfly have revealed in their newly released autobiography that band member Harry Judd had a night of passion with Hollywood basket case lindsay lohan but never managed to go all the way as they were interrupted by band mate Danny! The incident occurred back in 2005 during the filming of “Just My luck” which starred lohan and featured the Mcfly boys. The flirting began at a restaurant when lilo wasted no time in mouthing off about how many A-list celebs she’d boffed!! (Classy!)” As we ate she told us all these stories about her sex life, enough to put us off our steaks”!! later in a nightclub the fruitloop forced Harry into a toilet and “lunged at me. This was full on and lasted for quite some time.” The Mcfly drummer then went back to her hotel suite where cringing, he recalled that he told her “this was like “Notting Hill”, I was Hugh Grant and she was Julia Roberts!!!” Things however weren’t allowed to run the full course as they were disturbed, then “she started to sober up then fell asleep”! Lucky escape or missed opportunity? LiLo is back in the news and in trouble with the law when after a night out police were called during a huge fight between the actress and her mother who she accused of being on coke!! She later admitted she had lied about her mother taking drugs, “Daughters have fights with their moms,” she explained. “It happens a lot. It’s normal.” Ermmm ...of course it is Lindsay, only the other day I had a tiff with my mum, must’ve been all the Crack she was on-NOT!!! In yet another story of celebs almost

getting it on whilst working together, Robbie Williams has revealed that his lack of sobriety got in the way of bumping uglies with a certain Miss Kylie Minogue!! In an Italian radio interview, Rob revealed that “I wrecked my chances of ever sleeping with Kylie Minogue”. He explained that between filming of the steamy hot tub scene in the video of their duet “kids”, naughty Miss Minogue “got naked, I thought as if my life isn’t surreal enough. I just pointed at her and laughed!” He recalled that the tiny popster didn’t take it too well but it was due to shock and “I was really drunk”! So Robbie the lesson to be learned from this is when one of the planet’s most desirable women gets steamy and naked for

you, don’t start laughing like a retarded hyena, if it happened to me I wouldn’t, but I should be so lucky.

tenerife weekly Pool Superleague www.tenerifepoolleague.com

Team Vivo, New leaders Blue Division Penalty Sharks 4 V 6 Vivo A strong start from the sharks saw them with a 3 - 1 lead going onto the doubles, Vivo´s only saviour at this point being Sebastian, clearing up in a single visit. One double game then to each team gave the Sharks the sight of maybe a substantial win, with 4-2 up and four singles to play. Vivo took the first two, so 4 all, Pedro took on Paul Dwyer who looked to be in a commanding position with some excellent safety play; however an extremely unlikely pot almost the full length of the table along the two cushions left Pedro with the black for game. Victor made an equally outstanding safety shot in the final frame to turn the tables on Paul G, who had both remaining reds over the pocket but could not get a clear shot. His attempted pot failed and allowed Victor to sink his remaining yellow and the black to claim all points for team Vivo. Too close for comfort, and a very tense match! Bar 180 A 5 V 5 fosters Bar 180A raced into a 4-0 lead which saw Glyn 7 balling Dai only for the visitors to make a remarkable comeback taking the next 5 frames leaving Danny B to rescue a point for the league leaders. (Now ex leaders - ED.) Bar Tasca A 9 V 1 Oasis Bungalows game has faltered and can’t

With the games over for this season “The Coast fM Wild Bull Darts” teams congregated Saturday night at Nauta for the presentation night .it had great expectations as previous presentations have always been eventful!! 160 gathered with 130 choosing to go with the roast beef dinner. A big ask for the active night ahead with the food over it was back to the business of the bar and all eyes on the trophy table which stood shimmering as the lights shone off the many trophy’s that were to be awarded later in the evening. With Coast FM broadcasting the event live it was down to Legend CY BENSON to get the show on the road and the professional he is soon had the party rocking .great to see everybody from bars in Los Abrigas through to Callao Salvaje enjoying the atmosphere .Next was the time the players got the chance to collect the silverware as over 36 trophies were collected by individuals and teams including Division 1 Champions “Meigas” & Division 2 Champions “Chipeque Nomads” Next up in the cabaret was “Topaz” who had a full

get back to his winning ways. Grandad is in top form holding the side together. But the shot of the night goes to Picnic Ian with a stunning black down the cushion, to put the Tasca boys 4-1 up in the doubles. Just bring on the Hoops next week it will be a great game. Clouseaus emeralds 3 v 7 Bar 180 B A good on the road victory for Bar 180 B, they raced into a 6-1 lead, and the result was never in doubt the only down side for 180 was Ricki being 7 balled by Billy. lowrys 6 V 4 Dos hermanos Lowrys ground out another good home result in a very close contest with visitors Dos Hermanos.Rab, Russ and a returned to form Don, completed victories in the first round of singles and with the doubles matches being shared, Lowrys went to a 4-2 lead. The final 4 singles were shared evenly with Don and Russ ensuring victory for Lowrys by taking the necessary 2 frames. The result was always in the balance with virtually every frame closely contested in good spirit. Bar 180 C 9 V 1 red Pride A comfortable win for Bar180 C in which Wayne 7 balled Simon who to be fair did the walk of shame - it was a different story when Robin 7 balled Danii, who righty so kept her trousers on. lupain 7 V 3 Bar Tasca B Lupain are back to winning ways thanks to their Victor, by winning three games on the night, and a special night for Frances for clinching the black ball in a tense thriller with the very sporting Pauline & Bill, Steady Eddie once again was undefeated on the night. Thanks to the new owners of Sumerland Pool Bar for a very enjoyable night and the company of Bar Tasca B, great sports.

Barracuda Bandits 10 V 0 Nauta B The match was a bit one sided but the company was brilliant. I would just like to mention Simon from Nauta B who turned up on crutches. It seems that he had a few one night and jumped his home wall instead of using the gate, something he had done hundreds of times before. On this occasion however he broke both his heels .Please don’t laugh, he is almost better now. As a warning to others, just be careful what you say at Barracuda, it may end up in the paper.

CD Tenerife Unbeaten Run Survives Ten Man Finish

Artificial grass or a banana skin, either way it could have been a tricky away game at Guijuelo but CD Tenerife brought back a 0-0 draw despite ending the game with just 10 players. Loro and Suso both went close in the opening 10 minutes but found goalkeeper Calvo in hot form on his Guijuelo debut. Cristo headed wide on the half hour and it was shaping up to be a tight game. The home side felt hard done by when Valero scored early in the second half, they claimed his run was from behind defender Tarantino but the ref ruled it out for offside. Tenerife coach Alvaro

Cervera brought on Nico to spice things up but his plans were disrupted when left back Llorente was sent off for a second booking – his second early bath of the season. Wisely the coach swapped attacking midfielder Loro for the more defensive Abel to safeguard the point.

Manu went close with a header but the best chances came in injury time for Tenerife, Nico and Suso were both thwarted by the keeper. This Sunday second placed Real Aviles, two points behind Tenerife, visit Santa Cruz at noon in the first of two consecutive home games.

Glory Slips Away From CB Canarias

The big guns of Real Madrid, including Tenerife born Sergio Rodriguez, had to mount a great escape in the final two minutes to squeak an 86-88 win at CB Canarias. The La Laguna stadium was packed with 4,900 fans as the home side held an 82-70 lead with barely 90 seconds on the clock but Jaycee Carroll ran riot with three late

baskets to finally shake off CB Canarias. Sergio who started out with Tenerife Rural before being drafted to the NBA with Portland Trail Blazers, played a minor role in the power packed Madrid side. The home charge was led by Saul Blanco on 15 points and Richi Guillen with 18. The defeat leaves CB Canarias still looking for their first ACB league victory.

Pleasure Cruise for Noah & CD Marino

A convincing first win was a while coming but a 4-0 home victory over Alcala lifted CD Marino off the bottom of their division and above their visitors. Veteran striker Alberto Noah has scored goals everywhere he has played and his hat trick showed he still has plenty left to give. Alcala hadn’t scored away this season but threatened in the first 20 minutes, Marino knew how vital this game was and Sandro set up Noah after 24 minutes to make it 1-0. With half time looming Maikel

took a good corner and Noah was on hand to increase the lead. One just after the break was just what was needed and Sandro obliged on the counter attack fooling the goalie. Noah deserved his hat trick glory, Pablo sent across a tempting ball and Noah met it with his head to ensure the win. There’s no let up in the fight for points, this weekend Marino travel to play third placed Salamanca away and Noah would love to bag his 100th goal in Marino colours.

Tenerife Rally Gears Up For Northern Challenge

It’s an annual feast of motoring that delivers speed and thrills, the 38th Rally Isla de Tenerife will burn up 460 kms on Saturday 27 October in the north of the island. Parque Garcia Sanabria in the centre of Santa Cruz is the pits area; the 75 cars will gather there from 6pm on Friday for pre race checks and re-assemble for the prize giving on Saturday at 9pm. On Saturday from 8.30am there will be five stages, each tackled twice

in the search for the best times. The runs include Los Loros (12.09 kms), Icor (13.25kms), Fasnia to El Escoronal (11.31kms), Montefrio (8.43 kms), and

La Tabona (7.40 kms). The favourites include Fernando Capdevila in his Ford Focus WRC, and Victor Delgado in his Mitsubishi EVO 5.

province 12-6. The 12 players per team played over two days starting with 4 ball match play on Saturday but

Tenerife edged ahead and clinched victory in Sundays individual games closing with four wins and a draw.

Tenerife Get a Taste Of Ryder Cup Success

It might not have the world wide audience of the famous golf competition but the second year of the Canarian Ryder Cup evoked plenty of passion. The senior mens competition took place at Buenavista Golf where the province of Tenerife defeated the eastern islands of Las Palmas

astro-barilina’s twisted horoscopes Aquarius 20 January - 18 February

Gemini 21 May - 21 June Deja vu is the feeling that someone’s patronised you before (often by telling you what deja vu means). Make yourself a coffee, sit down and read the internet. Hell, it’s what you do every day, right?

Pisces 19 February - 20 March

Cancer 22 June - 22 July This week will see big advances in your love life. Your lonely existence will be replaced with a slightly less lonely existence when you are given a blow-up doll as a joke. Little do they know that this is exactly the gift you’ve been looking for...

Pickles are a source of joy for you this week. Any film you watch over the coming weekend will stay with you forever. Please ensure the film is not Tomb Raider. This year may seem to have started as you intended, but what’s happened since, eh? Nothing. You haven’t done anything. Get out there and get something sorted! Gift horses always happen to those who least expect it. The moral of this horoscope is: expect a gift horse. Cups of tea and coffee will start to rack up around your desk as you try to get everything done under the heady influence of a bucket of caffeine.

Aries 21 March - 19 April

Your appetites may increase today as the doctors finally remove the scissors they left inside you during your last operation. Do you have any idea what you’re letting yourself in for? Boy, I’m sure glad I’m not you. Spank yourself silly, because you’re been VERY, VERY bad.

Taurus 20 April - 20 May

You set your sights too high; it’s time to lower them in order to find true love. Be aware that marrying your own pets is not allowed in most countries. Your favourite romantic film is on this evening and you should try and persuade someone you’ve not previously had the courage to talk to watch it too.

Leo 23 July - 22 August Prepare yourself because your life is set for the biggest change you’ve seen in a long time. Your love life is ready to flourish, and all because you bought that wonderful hat the other day. You did buy it didn’t you? Oh, tell me you bought the hat! Virgo 23 August - 22 September A cigarette burn on your arm by that inconsiderate teenager will mark your arm will fade over the coming days and will be replaced by a tattoo of a young lady swathed in roses. Or maybe a blister?

Libra 23 September - 23 October

Assume everyone’s an idiot, and you may find yourself feeling clever. You may be better off taking charge of your own laundry today for reasons that the stars do not make clear. God is very much a vengeful god, so watch out for falling pianos. (God is also a ‘Laurel and Hardy’ fan.)

Scorpio 24 October - 21 November

Don’t shun your naked body; express yourself in lots of new happy naked ways. Live like you would like and you will part this world a happier person. Although you may spend a good deal of your life in jail.

Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December

Any sparks that you see in your fuse box may be due to unforeseen and deadly circumstances. When walking down the street, trying not to step on the cracks in the pavement, don’t kill a spider and definitely don’t walk under a ladder. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Capricorn 22 December - 19 January

Business clothes are not suitable for the swimming baths. Please take your extraordinary ideas about personal freedom elsewhere. Everything will suddenly sound good to you this week. This may be due to a syringing appointment you have earlier in the week, or it may be because love has just entered your life in the form someone floating down a river in a large plastic swan-type boat.
