fallen electricity pylon started a forest fire that threatened a village and forced residents to evacuate their homes. Strong winds blew down an electric pylon that causing a fire which spread over 3,000 square metres (32,000 square feet). The fire was in Los Realejos in the north of Tenerife, and round 20 people were evacuated, although other
reports have put the number much higher, at 200. Areas of Tenerife and other parts of the Canary Islands were on Orange storm alert on Tuesday and some schools were closed as a precaution. The rain started in earnest on Tuesday night and Wednesday. High winds and heavy rain spread across Tenerife from west to east, a state weather office said. Speaking of the poten-
tial fire damage, an official said: “The wind has dropped a lot and we are hopeful that when the rain comes the fire will go out,” he added that emergency services were fighting the blaze on difficult terrain. Spain is this year at particularly high risk of fires after its driest winter in 70 years. Flames destroyed more than 184,000 hectares (454,000 acres) of land between January and September, according to the agriculture ministry.

NEWS ON THE ROCK
latest figures have revealed that unemployment in the Canary Islands has reached 33.63% meaning that one in three people of the active population is unemployed. Unemployment increased by 7.400 people in the third quarter of the year, a 2% increase, bringing the total number of unemployed people in the Canaries to 378.200. These latest figures put the Canary Islands in second place (behind Andalucía) in the unemployment table in Spain. A total of 1.737.900 homes in Spain have all family members out of work. In the last twelve months the Canarian economy has lost 37.300 jobs (-4.39%) and its active population has increased by 12.200 additional people seeking work. This news comes as Madrid order the Canary Islands to lose over 10.000 from the public sector. The flu jab campaign has been suspended because of a “pharmaceutical alert” which was raised because white floating protein particles were discovered in some batches of the vaccine. Delivery of the batches has been halted, with the vaccine kept in optimum conditions so that the campaign can be resumed if the particles are found to be harmless. Sanidad stressed that of those who have already been vaccinated, no adverse reaction has been noted. If the campaign has to be definitively stopped, Sanidad says that some eight autonomous regions will be left without vaccine cover. In such a case, a flu epidemic cannot be ruled out. The Canarian Government is working with the Ministerio de Sanidad and the Agencia del Medicamento to acquire other doses from alternative laboratories, and if these can be acquired, those at particular risk will be prioritized. Electric retailer Worten has opened their second store in Tenerife. The nautical test of large sailing ships will leave Santa Cruz de Tenerife; their final destination is the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. In July, these figures were confirmed and the police issued clear advice to be on guard. Now comes the news that the Canaries are suffering an unprecedented crime wave , with forced entry home robberies going up 41% over 2012. Between January and September there were 3,143 such burglaries compared with 2,236 in the same period of 2011. The 41% rise in the Canaries compares with a rise of 24.5% on the mainland.

Closest Asteroid fly By Due in february An asteroid, the size of a city block, will squeeze by Earth’s atmosphere and the geostationary satellites orbiting the planet on 15th february 2013. The public will get a chance to see the flyby through exclusive live feeds from telescopes in La Sagra and Tenerife, Spain, where the astronomers who first discovered DA14 will be tracking it. Live feeds from Majorca and other observatories are also planned. Astrophysicist and asteroid ex-
pert Dr. Javier Licandro, of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canaries in Tenerife, Spain, also will provide some commentary. It will be the closest fly by in history and many international leaders in asteroid and comet research will gather at the University of Central Florida in Orlando Friday, Feb. 15, for a special “viewing party” to watch the asteroid 2012 DA14 zipping between Earth and orbiting communication satellites (within 14,000 miles of Earth). Experts are quick
to reassure that there is no chance the asteroid will hit Earth -- this time. But with more than 4,700 asteroids NASA has identified as potential threats to Earth, some as big as 16 football fields, these objects are getting a lot of attention. Humberto Campins, a UCF physics professor who led the first team to discover water ice on an asteroid in 2010, said the asteroids provide clues to the early formation of the solar system and should interest the entire community because they can be hazards

as well as resources. Should an asteroid be detected on a collision course with Earth, it will be critical to know its composition and structure in order to deflect it. The impact of a small asteroid like DA14 could equal the destruction of an atomic bomb. A larger asteroid could be catastrophic. Campins and other the planetary scientists at UCF organized this free viewing party and invited leaders in asteroid research to speak to the public about the reality and myths of these ancient rocks.
THE municipality of granadilla de Abona is formally opposed to the reintroduction of the “transfer” in Tenerife Sur-Reina Sofia airport, allowing taxi drivers of other areas into the airport albeit with authorization.
This measure is provided in the “regulations for the Declaration as sensitive areas” for the airports in both the north and south of Tenerife, as well as the ports of Santa Cruz and in Los Cristianos. This document will be available for viewing for 30 days, starting from last Wednesday. The municipality of Granadilla de Abona considers that the figure of the “transfer” will cause a long term prejudice for taxis in the municipality sector. It has also emerged that this figure is not mandatory, but an option “that should only be taken where the demand for taxis is not enough where
you are based and if you want to use the special arrangement for the collection of passengers”. In the case of the Tenerife Sur-Reina Sofia airport, Granadilla municipal government stated that “this circumstance does not occur, because the current demand may be covered by licensing of taxis of the municipality, without requiring licenses from other localities involved”. This opposition is also based on the expectation that it will not increase
the current demand of travellers, but that will decrease due to the transfer of most of the domestic flights to Tenerife Norte, where the tour operators have their own minibuses, and increased frequencies of the Titsa Bus routes which pass through the airport in some cases, every 15 minutes. Granadilla demands that the Reina Sofia should not be included in the Declaration of sensitive area for this service.

British Consulate Helps Residents To get informed HAVE your friends told you that you can get medical treatment at the health centre in the town where you live just by showing your uk-issued European Health insurance Card? That if you were thinking of going back to the uk, you’d have to wait at least 6 months to access nHS health care? And that you need to have worked 15 years in Spain to be entitled to a Spanish pension? Are you one of the thousands of “swallows” recently arrived to the Canaries, escaping the cold UK winter? And have you been told that your European Health Insurance Card will cover everything from ongoing hospital treatment to repatriation back home? Well things might not be quite as they seem - the statements above are all false. Don’t listen to misleading rumours, come and hear from the experts. The British Consulate is holding a series of open events throughout the Canary Islands, to offer advice on some of the issues that matter most to the Brits that live here.
Consular assistance, your pension and benefit rights as a British resident in Spain, and your responsibilities as residents in the Canaries are just some of the areas that will be covered. How to correctly register for healthcare is an increasingly hot topic among residents and this will also be on the agenda, as will where to apply for the European Health Insurance Card. British Consul Maria Leng said: “We’re really keen to help British residents integrate into Spanish life, and get the most out of living in the Canaries. All too often we see the avoidable hardship caused when residents haven’t registered themselves correctly with the local authorities. This is a great chance to hear from the local experts about your rights, and your obligations as residents. By holding individual events on four different islands, I look forward to meeting as many people as possible.” Those attending can submit questions for the panel in advance and should do so when booking their place at the event. The question and answer session will follow the main presentation.
The events are scheduled for Thursday 29th November:

Surfers Paradise Planned in Tenerife nORTHERn Tenerife is currently being investigated for ways of developing surfing as a means of expanding tourism and the local economy.
The Playa Martianez beach became an iconic surfing area twenty years ago and has continued its success since. That’s despite the beach having suffered many different transformations over the last few years. You will find on any day of the year families, and surfers of all ages and surf levels, enjoying the waves. Now, however, the local Council has approved yet another transformation plan that proposes to build an additional ‘rip rap’ (sea walls that line parts of the coast to ward off strong wave action and move the energy elsewhere) all along the front of the beach to
stop the swell from the Atlantic. Currently there is already one ‘rip rap’ that lessens the swell, but does not completely stop it. The idea is to achieve a place where tourists can swim without risks, and sea doesn’t take back the sand from the shore. The problem is that the new transformation will close the iconic surf spot, one that has contributed strongly to consolidate surfing as a regular sport in Tenerife. Angel Lobo, president of the Canary Surf Federation has tried a new approach. He is presenting a new proposition to the Council, which will enable combining the approved project and the surf spot. Angel has proposed an investigation plan that is really the first in the world. Behind the current ‘rip rap’, waves are breaking constantly, waves that hold their form, no mat-
ter how strong the swell is. However, the problem is that waves are impossible to catch because of the risk of crashing into one of the many rocks there. Now the investigation is underway consisting of different phases. First, is
to recover information about the spot, during a year. This is due to end in November 2013. Then, this data will be processed and analysed by expert ‘Fluid (hydraulic) Engineers’. It is then proposed they release a report on wheth-
er it is possible to adapt the rocks, and the area, to permit the waves to break free of rocks and achieve a new surf spot, with world class waves. It could be the greatest news for the Surfing Community in Canary Islands,
and the local economy. If the technical resolution gives the “OK”, then the authorities could start to execute the project, and in 2014, surfers could come to surf at a new world class wave in the Canary islands.

Royal Marines Birthday Bash S unday 28th October proved to be a Red Letter Day for many former Serving Royal Marines. They celebrated the fact that the Corp was 348 years old and held a semi-formal dinner at the Surry Arms in Los Cristianos.
Attendees included residents as well as winter residents and their wives, who made a real effort and looked absolutely stunning. The Annual event gives the members a chance to celebrate and respect their Corp, and for the ladies to dress up.
Although it was considered to be semi-formal, it took on the mantle of a “proper Regimental Dinner” including toasts to the Royal Marines, the Queen, Captain General and absent friends. On completion of the meal, the chef, Tim, accepted a drink, which he finished promptly and put the empty glass on his head, just as tradition dictates. The event also held a raffle of Royal Marines memorabilia which raised 210 Euros for their charity HOW (Help Our Wounded). One of the organisers, Barry , said of the night: “I felt it was a brilliant success with a record number of attendants, a thoroughly good time was
had by all. Good food, good wine and company and the ladies did us proud.” Earlier this year, the group held a special event for St. Georges Day at Vivo in aid of Help For Hero’s where they helped to raise the
huge sum of 2,500 Euros. They all hope to attend Westhaven Bay Hotel on Sunday November 11th for the Remembrance Service supporting the Royal British Legion and their Poppy Appeal.

Returning To The Sun? let Your uk Benefit Office know!
WiTH the usual heat waves hitting the island this summer, many expat residents chose to return to the uk during July and August to escape the high temperatures. now that autumn is here, many are coming back to escape the extremes of the weather in the u.k. Some expats may be intending to spend the entire winter here, others just a few weeks or months. But however long your stay, it is important that if you receive any benefits you are entitled to, if you are going abroad, even for just a short time, you notify the office that pays your benefit before you leave. King Carlos Visits India King Juan Carlos was received at a welcoming ceremony by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee on the second day of his official visit to India. Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh greeted the king upon his arrival at the majestic Presidential Palace, where he was received with a 21gun salute and full military honours.
After his first contact with Mukherjee, who gave a dinner in his honour, King Juan Carlos went to the Raj Ghat area, south of the Red Fort and on to the banks of the Yamuna River, where a quadrangular marble platform marks the place where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated
after his assassination in 1948. Barefoot, as a sign of respect for the sacred place, the king placed a floral wreath in the colours of the Spanish flag on the marble and observed a minutes silence, before scattering petals on the pond at the centre of the monument. He then signed the mausoleum’s book of honour and received a gift of several volumes and a bust of Gandhi. From the mausoleum, the king went to the official residence of the prime minister to meet with Singh and preside over the signing of several accords on bilateral economic cooperation in matters of taxation, audio-visual production, defence and transport Commenting on the Spanish economic problems and unemployment, the king commented:
“It is sad of course, but we’re going to survive it.” He said he was very pleased with his visit to India as he was with Spanish business owners and executives abroad, whom he praised for their longterm commitment to the nations where they invest, and said experience shows that, in foreign countries, companies and the government “have to work together.” He would like to visit China soon to support Spain’s economic interests there, as he did in Russia and before that in Brazil and Chile.

Prince and Princess Visit Award Winning Bueño
T
he Prince and Princess of Asturias presented the Exemplary Town of Asturias 2012 to the village of Bueño. The award was launched in 1990 to mark the tenth anniversary of the Prince of Asturias Awards.
The prize is given to the town which has stood out in “the protection and preservation of the natural environment, environmental, historical heritage, cultural or artistic or for also conducting community works or other outstanding demonstrations of solidarity.” Throughout the day the Prince and Princess braved very poor weather but still managed to walkabout and meet the people who had gathered to see them. They
paid particular attention to the children they met throughout the visit resulting in some beautiful images of the Princess holding a baby and the Prince getting a kiss on the cheek from a little girl. After touring the town Prince Felipe presented the award to Bellarmine Fernandez, President of the Cultural Association of Bueño, in the town’s main square. Amongst his coments the heir to the throne complimented the town on, despite Spain’s economic crisis, working “to create, imagine, and take action to make a better world.” The award ceremony ended with a playing of the anthem of Asturias after which the Prince and Princess continued their tour. They went on to visit the chapel of San Juan de Mata and had lunch at the town’s sports facility.
Spain Needs 2020 Olympics The President of the Spanish National Olympic Committee, Alejandro Blanco has said that Madrid winning the right to host the 2020 Olympic Summer Games would deliver just the boost that is needed as the country battles against the recession. The 62-year-old was replying to those who query whether Madrid has the financial power to host the Games. Spain is bidding to hold the games again after Barcelona hosted them successfully in 1992. “The socio-economic situation in the country is a very good reason for investing and creating jobs and wealth to get the economy going again,” said Blanco. “You also have to remember that the global economy has been so unstable that it’s only now that we can see exactly where we are. But what’s going to happen in 2020?” Blanco, former president of the Spanish judo federation, drew a comparison with some host cities whose economies were stronger
than Madrid’s at the time they won the Games but who since have suffered serious economic hardship. “Some host cities were in a totally different economic situation when they were awarded the Games to when they actually delivered them,” he said. “To my mind, it’s not how you start that matters so much, but how you end. And the fact that Madrid already has about 80 % of the necessary infrastructures in place, including the airport, ring roads and underground - is a solid guarantee of stability. Our investments will be reduced to the minimum. We also have the full support of the Spanish, regional and local governments and will travel the whole way with them hand in hand.” Blanco, whose Madrid bid is competing against Istanbul and Tokyo, the only one of the cities bidding to host the Games for a second time, said that a Madrid win would be a win for the country as a whole. “Spain needs the Games more than ever,” he said. “This is a strategic project for the country as a whole, not just the city, and we need joint projects that

Private enterprise is committed to the Bid and sees it as a unique opportunity to breathe new life into the economy. The Games will attract investors, boost investment, cre-
ate wealth and promote tourism.” Blanco, who is due to leave for a series of engagements over the next couple of months as he tries to sell his message to some of the 100-plus International Olym-
pic Committee (IOC) members who will vote on the host city in Buenos Aires on September 7 next year, said the London Games proved his point about the economic benefits.

Sheep Take Over Madrid SPAniSH shepherds led a flock of more than 2,000 sheep through central Madrid last Sunday in defence of ancient grazing, migration and droving rights threatened by the spread of urban areas and modern agricultural practices. Tourists and residents alike were surprised to see traffic stopped to allow the parade to bleat its way through some of Madrid’s most upmarket areas. The right to use droving routes that cross land that used to be open fields and woodland before Madrid grew into the great metropolis it is today, has existed since 1273. Every year, a handful of shepherds defend the right
and, following an ageold tradition, paid 25 Maravedis, coins used in the 11th century, to city hall to use the crossing. The shepherds have the right to use 125,000 kilometres of paths for seasonal livestock migrations from cool highland pastures in summer to warmer and more protected lowland grazing in winter. This movement is called transhumance and in Spain up until recently involved close to a million animals a year, mostly sheep and cattle. The Spanish shepherds are proud of their centuries-old sheep rearing traditions and hold the native Merino breed of sheep in particular esteem. Merinos have gone on to form the backbone of important wool industries in places such as Australia and South America.

A
ll across Spain, officials are opening the coffins of dead new born babies to see if there are any human remains inside. They have discovered that many of the coffins are empty. Spain is reeling from one of the worst crimes since World War II. It is known simply as “los bebés robados,” the stolen babies. The sheer scale of it is staggering: perhaps 300,000 Spanish babies have been taken from their mothers at birth and sold on the black market.
It began during the Franco dictatorship in 1939 and continued up to the 1990s; new born babies were stolen from hospitals and trafficked by a network of doctors, nurses, priests, and nuns. It was used as a system for taking children from families that were considered politically dangerous to the Franco regime to re-educate them. The attending nurse would take the baby from the mother to have to it examined and cleaned. The nurse would then return with a dead baby that was kept in a freezer at the hospital as proof that the child had died. A coffin would be buried that contained only rocks. What started as a system of political control then turned into a giant money-making operation. And the truth only came out when a man named Juan Luis Moreno sat by his father’s deathbed and was told that both he and his childhood friend Antonio Barroso
had both been bought from a nun. “It was horrible, first to know that my father was dying, but then to learn that my father wasn’t really my father, and that my best childhood friend was stolen just like I was,” Moreno said. Barroso recalled, “When I was a boy, other boys at school said that my mother wasn’t my real mother. So I asked my mother, and she said, ‘of course you’re my son.’ But when I did a DNA test with my mother, the probability of maternity was 0%.”
Search For Justice Barroso founded Anadir, an association fighting for justice for the victims of this scandal. “I filed
three judicial complaints, which were all ignored,” he said. “Then I realized that I needed to establish an association to see if the courts would pay attention because they were ignoring us.” As their story spread, more and more Spanish women, who believe their babies were stolen, started to come forward. Outside a courthouse in Valencia, women looking for lost children or siblings held up signs for the TV cameras. “I’m looking for my daughter born in 1982,” one woman said. “Like the others, I saw her at birth and I didn’t see her again. They told me she had died.” “I’m looking for my brother, who was born in July 1971 in Valencia,” another woman said. Barroso said, “I believe that Spain was a supermarket for babies, for Spaniards themselves,
and for the rest of the world.” The Spanish authorities have started to examine death certificates and adoption papers and found that many had been falsified. One adoption paper said the child’s biological parents were “Mary” and “Joseph.” The use of the names Mary and Joseph was common. The crimes were committed purely for money. Every hospital had its own business.”
Victims Speak Out
Now women looking for their parents, siblings, or children, say they feel the government is dragging its feet. “Sometimes we feel as if they’re playing with us,” said Anabel, who is looking for her parents. “We want a fair justice and some brave judges,” she said. “We want the government to support us because they have the strength. They have the means and power to order and say who the mothers of these children are, and to turn over the archives.” Another woman, looking for her sister, said it feels like “A black hole. We need to know where our parents and brothers and sisters and babies are.” Enrique Vila, a Valencia lawyer acting for the victims and author of a bestselling book about the stolen babies, said, “Spanish justice is deceiving us. They deceive by giving the image that they are working to resolve this problem, that they are investigating it. It’s a good political image to show the rest of the world,” he said. Rumours of stolen babies have been circulating in Spain for
decades. But no cases made it to court until this year. “It seems incredible that there are doctors, there are medical assistants, nurses, nuns, who are still on the streets, who have stolen children, become rich and they have not yet been arrested or detained or put in prison,” Vila said. “This I don’t think would happen in any other country.” Vila does not believe the thefts were a policy of the Catholic Church, but the actions of some individual priests and nuns, as well as doctors and nurses. But he wonders if the church hierarchy knew about it and looked the other way. Church officials deny it. Spain is today a nation of many tortured souls, people who once thought they knew who they were and have discovered they are someone else. “You find out about this big lie that they sold Antonio and me,” Morena said. “It’s a crime. It’s the buying and selling of babies, like someone who just buys a computer. It’s horrible.” Praxe Maxia said, “I cry every night when I go to sleep for my daughter. When she was born, I could not hug her. I only had her on my breast. They put her there while they cut the umbilical cord. They cut the cord and they took her and I didn’t see her again.” The victims’ group Anadir has filed more than 900 lawsuits over stolen babies, but almost all have been thrown out because of lack of evidence. Even if the Spanish legal system gets to the bottom of this crime, it can never repair the damage done to so many Spanish mothers and the children they never knew.

Halloween Stampede
Three young women were killed and two are critically ill in hospital following a stampede at a Halloween party in the Madrid Arena Stadium. Partygoers were in tears as they battled against a human tide for the exit doors in a panic apparently sparked by someone throwing a flare. Some of the doors to the stadium had apparently been sealed and trapped people who were attending “Thriller Music Park”. The women, who died in the crush, were apparently in a passageway in the stadium, and aged between 18 and 25, police officials have said. One witness described the chaos with people fighting for a single door, a waiter trying to resuscitate one of the victims on the bar, and security agents pulling at fleeing youngsters. One partygoer - Sandra - spoke of what happened. “There was a human blockage at the only exit they had because the others were closed so that no-one
could go out that way” she added. “People were crying, crushed, and there was no-one to help that girl: the waiter got up on to the bar and tried to re-
suscitate her.” Fernando Prados, duty chief of Madrid emergency services, was on duty at the time of the disaster. “We received a call at about
Doctors said the surfboard probably bore the brunt of the bite, possibly keeping the shark’s teeth from penetrating organs that would have made surgery riskier and more complicated
Despite the traumatic experience, Mr Stephens said it will not keep him out of the water. “I will be very scared, I’m sure,” he said. “I’ll definitely have some mental barriers to get through. I think it’ll be worth it.”

Surfer In Shark Attack
25-year-old Scott Stephens was paddling on his surf board 150 yards further out than other surfers when a shark grabbed him and pulled him under water. He fought it off by punching it on the side of the head. The attack in Eureka, California left him with eight deep lacerations. Stephens estimates the creature was four feet long and believes it was a juvenile great white. “The shark came from underneath me, grabbed onto my side, shook me a few times and pulled me under water,” he told reporters from his hospital bed. “I opened my eyes under water and punched the shark on the side of the head a couple of times until it released me. I saw a lot of blood. I really didn’t feel much at the time probably because I was in shock. I didn’t feel too much pain until I woke up this morning,” he said.

Big Ben has kicked off “Movember” WESTMinSTER was chosen as the location to kick off this year’s “Movember” movement as there have been suggestions that around 40 MPs have signed up to grow a ‘tache. A giant moustache was projected onto Big Ben to highlight what has become a major effort to raise money and change attitudes towards men’s health worldwide.
Under the official Movember rules, men have to start with a clean shaven face on November 1st and then grow a moustache during the month of November. The moustache cannot be joined to the sideburns because this is considered a beard or joined to the chin as it would then warrant the title of a goatee. In the U.K alone over 250,000
men took part and raised more than £22million for the charity which supports and raises awareness for testicular and prostate cancer. Co-founder of Movember Justin Coghlan, said: “Men’s health has moved forward in leaps and bounds in recent years but we need to encourage more men to talk about real issues, especially with each other. It’s time for men to come together and help change the face of men’s health. This Movember, knowledge is power, moustache is king.” Prostate Cancer UK is the main beneficiary partner of Movember in the UK and Chief executive Owen Sharp described the event as “fantastic”. He said “It gets people talking about prostate cancer and men’s health in a unique and active way. I urge men to prioritise their health and push a trip to their doctor higher up their agenda if they have any concerns about
prostate cancer.” One in nine men is diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK with a diagnosis every 15 minutes, according to research. Despite it being the most common cancer for men in Britain, studies show many men are unaware of the risks. Movember was launched in Melbourne, Australia, in 2003 and has spread across the world. In 2011, 854,000 people in total registered and raised £79.3m.

Prison Officer Murdered In Northern Ireland D avid Black, a long-ser ving p r i s o n officer in County Antrim, has been murdered in a motorway ambush possibly carried out by dissident republicans in Northern Ireland. Mr Black, who was married with a family, is the 30th prison officer killed in Northern Ireland since 1974. The officer, from Cookstown, County Tyrone, had served for more than 30 years’ and was looking forward to retiring. He had expressed interest in an early retirement scheme but his departure date had not yet been set. He was ambushed by a gunman on Northern Ireland’s M1 motorway as he was driving to begin duty at the top security Maghaberry jail near Lisburn, County Antrim. The shooting happened at around 7.30am, at the same time as a major security alert further
along the motorway at a shopping centre close by, where bomb disposal experts were called in to check a car. It is believed this vehicle might have been linked to the shooting. Police said the gunman was in a Toyota Camry, with a Dublin registration, which drew alongside Mr Black’s black Audi. It appears that shots were fired at the prison worker from the vehicle, causing Mr Black’s car to veer off the motorway and into a drainage ditch. He “sustained very serious and probably fatal gunshot wounds,” police said. A car used in the attack was later found burnt-out in Lurgan, Co Armagh, where supporters of dissidents have backed the jail protest campaign. It is understood that Mr Black’s service stretched back as far as the 1981 IRA hunger strike inside the Maze prison, when 10 republicans starved themselves to death. Finlay Spratt, the head of the Prison Officers’
Association, who knew him described him as “a very nice fellow to work with”, he criticised the security provisions offered to prison officers since the Troubles ended. “They have stripped away all the security around prison officers,” he said. Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Chief Constable Matt Baggott said: “It was a completely senseless attack. It demonstrated
the recklessness and ruthlessness and sheer dangerousness of those who oppose peace and are dedicated to taking us back to those dark days of the past. This has all the hallmarks of dissident republicans. This was just a brutal attack and we need the public’s support to be able to solve it as quickly as possible.” Politicians from all parties were quick to condemn the murder and, even
though no organisation has admitted responsibility, security chiefs believe republicans opposed to the peace process were responsible. The extremists have been involved in longrunning protests against jail conditions inside Maghaberry. Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness condemned the murder. “At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with the
Aldi Wins Christmas Taste Test Supermarket Aldi has beaten “the Queens Grocer” Fortnum & Mason in a Christmas pudding taste test. Fortnum ranked 29th whilst Aldi came second. The discount supermarket’s £7.99 Xmas pudding was described it as a “real bargain” by Good Housekeeping magazine. However, exclusive London departments store’s £24.95 offering (circled) was labelled as “a real disappointment”. Good Housekeeping’s experts ate and drank their way through 162 different foods covering eleven categories for its annual Christmas Dinner Tried and
Tested. Waitrose beat off all comers in the pudding category with its cherry and almond-topped pudding, complete with edible glitter. The upmarket supermarket also won the champagne round with its Brut Special Reserve Vintage 2004, Sainsbury’s and Tesco’s were judged as runnersup. In the cranberry sauce category, Fortnum & Mason’s £10.95 jar also failed to impress, it finished last, beaten by Tesco’s £1.49 version. The supermarkets also topped the charts when it came to Christmas cake - with all five major stores’ own-brand versions shortlisted. Specialists won the mince pie taste-off -
Bettys, Harrods and Gails were shortlisted, Morrisons being the only supermarket mentioned. The magazine’s consumer director, Caroline Bloor, said shopping for Christmas dinner prod-
ucts can be hit and miss. “Our annual Good Housekeeping Tried and Tested special on festive foods proves you don’t need to breakt the budget buying expensive names to treat everyone

Minerals found On Mars nASA has discovered the mineralogy of the soil on Mars is similar to soils found in Hawaii. The minerals were found in the first sample of soil collected by Mars rover Curiosity using its Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument (CheMin), nasa has reported on its website. This discovery is crucial for the mission’s goal to assess past environmental conditions. Each mineral find records the conditions under which it formed. Up to now scientists did not have an understanding of the mineral make-up of the dust and fine soil found widespread on Mars. David Blake of Nasa Ames Research Centre said: “Our quantitative results provide
refined and in some cases new identifications of the minerals in this first Xray diffraction analysis on Mars.” CheMin used X-ray diffraction, standard for geologists on Earth, which reads minerals’ internal structure by recording how their crystals interact with X-rays. This method has now provided a far more accurate detection of minerals than any previously used on Mars. The specific sample was collected at a patch of dust and sand that the team named Rocknest. The sample was processed through a sieve to exclude particles larger than 150 micrometres - roughly the width of a human hair. The sample had at least two components: dust distributed globally in dust storms and fine sand originating more locally. Unlike the rocks that Curiosity investigated a few weeks ago, which are
several billion years old and indicative of flowing water, the recent soil material CheMin has analysed points to more modern processes on Mars.
These Nasa technological advances have led to other applications on Earth, including compact and portable X-ray diffraction equipment for oil and
gas exploration, analysis of archaeological objects and screening of counterfeit pharmaceuticals. During a the two-year period researchers will
use Curiosity’s 10 instruments to probe whether areas in Gale Crater ever offered environmental conditions favourable for microbial life.

Savile Banned from Children in need fuRTHER revaluation’s from the sordid past of Jimmy Savile continued this week with the news that he had been banned for having anything to do with the Charity Children in need. Sir Roger Jones, a former chairman of the charity, said he had been uncomfortable about allowing Savile to have any associations with their work. Although he said that he had “no evidence” that Savile was up to anything, he behaved strangely, adding: “i think we all recognised he was a pretty creepy sort of character.”
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg demanded “heads will need to roll” at the BBC if it is discovered that abuse was ignored. “Serious questions need to be asked and if after we find out what’s happened, it’s clear that people
have turned a blind eye or, worse still, connived with it, then of course they’re going to have to be held to account and - if that turns out to be the case - heads will need to roll of course.” It also emerged that Savile regularly took teenage girls to a private room in the nurse’s accommodation at Leeds General Infirmary. An ex-worker claimed that Savile, who worked as a volunteer for the hospital, would bring girls in the early hours of the morning and leave before dawn. It is understood he had his own office in the hospital’s Welcome Wing for 10 years. A spokesperson for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS
Trust said: “We continue to be shocked by each new allegation. It is important that they are investigated properly. The Trust is in contact with senior detectives from the Metropolitan Police and we have indicated our intention to help with their enquiries. If there are any issues which need to be addressed following the police investigation then we will take action.” Leeds General Infirmary is one of three hospitals, alongside Broadmoor and Stoke Mandeville, where Savile has been accused of abusing children. Scotland Yard is currently investigating the Top of the Pops presenter’s activities, and
he is now believed to have been of the UK’s most prolific child sex abusers, with about 300 possible victims. Detectives are following 400 lines of inquiry as part of the investigation while the BBC has launched an inquiry into the culture and practices at the corporation during the Savile era. Gary Glitter has become the first high-profile arrest under Scotland Yard’s Operation Yewtree, which is looking at child sex abuse allegations against Savile and others. He was later released on Police bail to return in December. Police have drawn up a detailed
arrest strategy as 30 officers’ work through claims of abuse. This week marked one year since Savile’s death. At the time he was praised for his charity work. Now, however the depictions of Savile could not be more different, described as a predatory paedophile and one of Britain’s most prolific sex offenders. His great niece has also come forward as one of his victims; Caroline Robinson said: “I am sure the BBC, if they could have stopped this in the 60s when they first found out about the allegations, I would not be
Ronnie Wood To Marry Again AgEing Rolling Stones star Ronnie Wood, 65, is to marry his theatre producer girlfriend, who is just 31 years his junior. The guitarist will tie the knot for the third time with Sally Humphreys, 34, whom he has been dating for around six months. A spokesman has confirmed the news, saying: “Ronnie is engaged to Sally.” Wood, who has battled drink and drug addiction, split with second wife Jo
Wood in 2008. He left her after over 20 years of marriage to be with 21-year-old former cocktail waitress Ekaterina Ivanova. His divorce from Jo was finalised last year. Jo recently auctioned off items from their marriage, sparking a dispute with her ex who said his Rolling Stones tour outfits were not hers to sell. His first marriage to Krissy Findlay, the mother of Jesse, one of his four children, lasted seven years.
a victim now. I would not be sat here. They have wrecked my world apart. They are to blame. I think a vast amount of people knew at the BBC, at the NHS and the council. I think everybody knew who surrounded themselves with Jimmy Savile. The rewards they got from the Savile name and everything else kept them in a lifestyle that they became accustomed to.” Over the weekend, Savile’s Highland cottage at Glencoe was targeted by vandals, “Jimmy the beast” was spray-painted across one wall and the door was badly damaged.

Hollywood Sign gets A Makeover BY way of celebrating its forthcoming 90th birthday next year, the iconic Hollywood sign is getting its biggest renovation for 35 years. The 50ft (15m) tall letters are being stripped down and washed by workers using windowcleaner style platforms ahead of the application of nearly 400 gallons of fresh paint. The clean-up should see the sign restored to its bright white glory before Christmas. The sign on top of Mount Lee in the Hollywood Hills north of Los Angeles is managed by the Hollywood Sign Trust and has been regularly repainted - but not as thoroughly as
this time. The trust, which looks after the sign for the City of Los Angeles, says: “This is the most extensive refurbishing effort of its kind in nearly 35 years for the sign, which will be repainted in its signature white. By protecting and preserving this towering treasure, the trust helps strengthen its symbolic role as the beacon of the entertainment industry.” The original sign was erected in 1923 to advertise a property development called Hollywoodland, but the last four letters were removed in the 1940s. One of Tinsel town’s favourite attractions, the sign fell into disrepair until it was restored in the 1970s after a campaign that saw nine donors pay $27,777 (21,400 Euros) to
“adopt” one letter each. It was threatened again more recently when investors who own the land surrounding the giant letters indicated plans to sell the plot to developers. But Playboy mogul Hugh Hefner helped secure the sign in 2010, along with then California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and other Hollywood “names” including Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Members of the public are now banned from accessing the area around the landmark. A sophisticated alarm system including motion sensors has been set up to stop trespassers. In 1932, British actress Peg Entwistle infamously committed suicide by throwing herself from the top of the letter H.

Disney Buys Lucasfilm
Disney has bought Lucasfilm from founder George Lucas and revealed that it is planning to make a new series of Star Wars movies. The entertainment giant, which owns brands Pixar, Marvel, ESPN and ABC, paid $4.05bn (£2.52bn) for the company. Disney has also confirmed it is making Star Wars Episode 7, scheduled to be released in 2015. The project would be the first in a new series of Star Wars films, with a new movie being released every two to three years. The last Star Wars picture was Revenge Of The Sith in 2005, and Lucas suggested at the time there were no plans for any more. The deal also includes the rights to the Indiana Jones name, although Disney has not said if it planned to revive the films featuring the action hero, played by Harrison Ford. Kathleen Kennedy, the current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become the president and report
directly to Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn. Analyst Matthew Harrigan, from Wunderlich Securities in the US, said the deal was a good one. “Lucas wanted Luke and Darth to be in safe hands, and now they will be,” he said. There was room for growth in both the film and merchandising aspects of the franchise - given the popularity of 3D films and Imax cinemas, and video and social games. However Harrigan warned that Disney must be careful about the number of Star Wars films it releases. “The last Star Wars movie did OK internationally, but not as good as James Bond. There’s certainly scope to grow, but Disney must be careful not to burn the franchise out. Releasing a film every two to three years sounds about right.” Lucas, who created the Star Wars fictional universe and therefore one of the most lucrative box office draws of all time, will be creative consultant on the new films. After the deal was announced he said: “It’s now
time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.” Lucas will become the second-largest individual holder of Disney shares,
with a 2.2% stake. Disney will pay half the purchase price in cash and issue about 40 million shares to complete the deal. Chief financial officer Jay Rasulo said the deal would lower Disney’s earnings per share by a low singledigits percentage in 2013 and 2014. He also said Disney would repurchase all
of the issued shares on the open market within the next two years, on top of planned buybacks. The deal marks the third time in less than seven years that Disney has signed a deal to take over iconic studios or characters, part of its strategy to acquire brands that can be stretched across
TV, movies, theme parks and the internet. In early 2006, they acquired Toy Story creator Pixar, and in the summer of 2009 it bought the comic book Marvel Entertainment. Mr Harrigan added: “This deal is not a slam dunk like Marvel, but it is as good as - if not better than Pixar.”
can. Museum experts are considering how crowd control and a filter system could cut down the dust and pollutants which could damage the artwork. One suggestion is to limit visitors to 25 every 15 min-
utes, a move that director of the Vatican Museum, Antonio Paolucci agrees could cause fierce criticism. The chapel is seen as a place for religious worshippers as well as art lovers, something the Roman
Catholic Church is keen to retain. “So far we’ve tried to avoid this because the Sistine Chapel for those who visit the Vatican is not only a place of art but also a spiritual, religious place,” Mr Paolucci says.
His comments come a few weeks after he denied visitors would be limited, suggesting to do so would be as “unthinkable” as limiting access to the shrine of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes.
Happy Birthday Sistine Masterpiece Michelangelo’s fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel was opened to the public 500 years ago this week. The world-famous painting took five years to complete. Commissioned by Pope Julius II, it is said that initially Michelangelo was reluctant to take the project on. When he did finally agree, he put his heart and soul into it, depicting more than 300 fig-
ures rather than just the 12 apostles originally requested for. The work covers 12,000 square feet of the chapel ceiling and is believed by many to be his best work. The mural was considered to be a marvel the moment it went on show on All Saints Day (November 1), 1512. It now attracts up to 25,000 visitors a day, more than five million people a year. But the amount of pollution they bring with them is now a major worry for the Vati-

Apple Founder Super Yacht
Apple founder Steve Jobs dream yacht has been realised and launched, a year after his death. Christened The Venus after the Roman Goddess of Love, it could well be one of the last Jobs designs the world will ever see. Measuring 256ft (78m) yacht was a collaboration between Jobs and French designer Philippe Starck and was apparently dreamed up after a day-long discussion between the two. It is, obviously, powered by seven 27-inch screen iMacs that sit on the bridge. The yacht, which was built by shipbuilders Feadship, took to the water at the firm’s yard in Aalsmeer, just south of Amsterdam. Jobs’ wife Laurene and his children Reed, Erin and Eve were at the event and gave those involved in the project thank you notes and iPod Shuffles with the yacht’s name on the back. According to Jobs’ biographer Walter Isaacson, the vessel, which is made
of exceptionally long aluminium panels, was just as Jobs had envisioned it. The yacht is sleek and minimalist. The teak decks are perfectly flat and unblemished by any accoutrements. “Like an Apple store, the cabin windows are large panes, almost floor to ceiling and the main living area is designed to have walls of glass 40 feet long and 10
feet high.” According to Mr Isaacson, Jobs had said of his design: “I know that it’s possible I will die and leave Laurene with a halfbuilt boat. But I have to keep going on it. If I don’t, it’s an admission that I’m about to die.” He died on October 5 last year, aged 56, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. The super yacht also features a “revolution-
ary” design of large glass windows at a 90-degree angle, rather than sloped, which is usual to help deal with the winds. Jobs even enlisted the help of the chief engineer of the Apple stores to design a special glass that would provide structural support. The Venus is just under half the length of the world’s largest yacht, the 538ft (164m) Eclipse
owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. Starck was asked to help design the Venus in 2007. A statement from his design house said: “The pro-
ject never changed during the process of five years dedicated to rigorous work on details, driven by the famous eye and genius of Steve Jobs.”
Halloween Zombie Walk
Over 100 people dressed up in their best zombie costumes for Singapore’s first ever zombie walk for Halloween. Residents started putting on elaborate make-up some eight and a half hours before the event. Gillian Ang, 27, an analyst, had the idea of organising the singaporezombie.com zombie walk, where people imitate the un-dead, after seeing a similar event in America. “To be honest, it’s more for fun. I saw it in San Diego Comic Con, they had a zombie walk there, and I thought it would be fun to do it in Singapore,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun to play the end of the world,” said Rebecca, an Australian who lives in Singapore. The would-be zombies walked around a popular Singapore nightspot and had some fun by scaring visitors. “It was tiring,
but amazing to be able to scare strangers,” said one called Kieren. The zombie walk phenomenon started in 2001 in Sacramento, California, and since then major cities around the world such as New York, Buenos Aires and Sydney have seen their own versions of the un-dead gathering. Guinness World Records officially
recognised the New Jersey Zombie Walk at the Asbury Park Boardwalk as being the largest, held on October 30, 2010, it boasted 4,093 participants. However, Mexico City claimed the world record in November 2011 where nearly 10,000 people gathered in the city’s streets dressed up as zombies.

Cold Callers fined
Richard Herman, 53, plagued by nuisance phone calls offering compensation for Payment Protection insurance was so fed up with the unwanted calls arriving from india, he decided to take matters into his own hands. He warned the company that, in future, he would invoice them £10 for every minute of his time they used. When the calls did continue he began recording them before invoicing the company £195 for their use of his “time, telephone and electricity”. When the marketing firm acting on behalf of UK-based PPI Claimline Ltd received the invoice, they denied making the
calls. When Mr Herman revealed he had recorded evidence, they still refused to pay. But when Mr Herman filed a claim in the small claims court for the unpaid invoice - plus £25 in costs - the company offered to settle the debt out of court and transferred £220 into his bank account. Mr Herman filed in the small claims court when his invoice was not paid Mr Herman said: “I kept being called, as we all do, and I thought the only way for them to stop would be for me to speak to them and say, ‘For goodness sake, take me off your list! Then it occurred to me to tell them that if they call again I’ll charge for my time. When they continued calling I sent them an invoice for 19.5 minutes.” To encourage others to do the same Mr Herman has set up a website,
www.saynotocoldcalls. com which has examples of covering letters and invoices to send to nuisance callers. Even though the validity of Mr Herman’s original invoice was not tested in court,

he believes anyone who warns cold-calling companies they will be charged if they call, have a right to invoice them. “I did business studies at 17 and studied ‘offer-andacceptance’ so I knew a
verbal contract is just as valid as a written one but harder to prove. The recorded calls proved I did tell them I would charge for my time if they called again”. Mr Herman, who works
in the telephone industry selling call-recording equipment, said his action was a last resort after asking the Information Commissioner and the Telephone Preference Service for help.

Britain’s Biggest Fraudster A trader accused of Britain’s biggest bank fraud was trying to cover millions of pounds worth of losses incurred during the financial crisis for the bank he called his “family”. Kweku Adoboli, 32, is accused of gambling away £1.4bn while working as a trader for Swiss bank UBS. At one point, he was at risk of causing the bank losses of $12bn (£7.5bn). Adoboli wept as he gave evidence for the first time at his trial, in which he claimed his off-book trades were to cover $40m (£24.9m) annual losses of his portfolio of companies from 2008. The court heard that by 2007 Adoboli, aged 27, and the more senior trader John Hughes, 25, were in charge of a portfolio with assets of $50bn (£31.1bn). “Our
book was massive. A tiny mistake led to huge losses. We were these two kids trying to make it work,” he said. Mr Adoboli, wearing a dark suit and red tie, denied he was a “gambler” and said his knowledge of UBS’s systems did not result in “fraudulent behaviour”. Fighting back tears, he said: “It’s hard to find the words to describe the relationship I had with UBS as an organisation. It isn’t about a bank. It was about what I thought was my family, considering how much I neglected my real friends and family. Every single bit of effort I put into that organisation was for the benefit of the bank, the people around me and the book I worked on. If I was not so proud to work for UBS, I would never put so much effort trying to convince them that we could achieve something.” He added: “To find yourself
in Wandsworth Prison for nine months because all you did was work so hard for this bank...” before stopping as he broke down in tears. Mr Adoboli is facing two counts of fraud and four counts of false accounting between October 2008 and September 2011, allegedly gambling away the money on high-risk illegal trades aimed at boosting his annual bonuses and job prospects.
Robbie Turns On London Lights

obbie Williams is to give an open-air performance in one of London’s bestknown shopping areas when he turns on the traditional Christmas lights in Oxford Street. The star will appear next month with Leona Lewis and group Lawson, whose debut album; Chapman Square has just been released, amongst other as yet unnamed, as they perform to thousands of people. Williams will appear at the switch-on of the Marmite Oxford Street Christmas Lights on November 5, the day he releases new single Candy.
street. Williams said: “Oxford Street is a fantastic place to do your Christmas shopping and it’s great to be part of the celebrations. I can’t believe I am turning on the lights.”
UBS would not survive $52bn (£32.3bn) losses incurred in 200708 as the banking crisis took hold. He said: “The effect on the organisation was incredible. There were times we thought there was no way the organisation would survive. I grew up with UBS. I felt very loyal to UBS. What could we do to help this organisation survive this incredible crisis?”
The trial continues.

The former public schoolboy worked for UBS’s global synthetic equities division, buying and selling exchange traded funds (ETFs), which track different types of stocks, bonds or commodities such as metals. shark has been rescued after it dropped out of the sky onto the 12th hole at San Juan Hills Golf Club in California. Operations director Melissa McCormack said a course marshal found the leopard shark writhing around on the course
and brought it to the clubhouse. The twofoot long fish was placed into a bucket of water which was quickly salted by an employee who remembered that it would normally be found in seawater. Golf attendant Bryan Stizer used his cart to drive the shark back to the Pacific Ocean, about five
miles away. “I thought he was dead, when I dropped him into the water, he just lay there for a few seconds, but then he did a twist and shot off.” It is believed the shark had been caught up by a large bird of prey, such as an osprey or peregrine falcon, which then lost its grip on its dinner. Two bleeding puncture marks were seen near the fish’s dorsal fin.

Chuck Berry fights for A Come Back
M
uSiC legend Chuck Berry is planning a comeback, at the ripe old age of 86. The rock pioneer who had hits that included Roll Over Beethoven, Sweet little Sixteen and Johnny B. goode, announced his plans as he was honoured at the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in Cleveland, Ohio.
At the award and tribute concert, he told reporters that some of the songs were written 16 years ago. “As soon as I can get someone to guide me - and I do know a little about the
business - I want to push them out,” he said. “I’m going to come back and push them out if you know what I mean, somehow.” Berry gave no more details about the new songs or when they might be released. “They might be old, but they are the same type of music that I have been playing,” he said. The line-up for Saturday night’s tribute concert honouring Berry at the State Theatre included Ernie Isley and Darryl DMC McDaniels, Rick Derringer and Merle Haggard. Berry, who still performs monthly at a club in suburban St Louis, offered some advice to the performers: “Keep rocking, keep rocking. That’s two words. Next word is: Be kind to your fans.”
29
To mark the American Music Masters award presentation, the rock hall mounted a special exhibition with items including Berry’s stage clothes, a guitar and his 1958 Chess Records recording contract. The hall’s new library and archives has a separate exhibit featuring Berry’s 1964 British tour programme and a handbill promoting his appearance with the Grateful Dead in 1968. Past American Music Masters programme honourees include Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin and Woody Guthrie. Berry, the museum’s first inductee in 1986, called the award and enshrinement in the rock hall a great honour. “You can’t get any higher in my profession than this building or this reason for this building,” he said.
nolan in 2nd Quit Before Cancer Battle You’re 30
R
S
ingER and actress Bernie nolan has revealed that the cancer she fought two years ago has returned. The lead singer of sister group, The nolans, who recently celebrated her 52nd birthday, has vowed to fight the disease once again, although doctors have told her it is incurable. “i refuse to sit around like i’ve got a death sentence. i’ll fight this for ever - it can get stuffed. Ok, it’s not curable. But the doctors have promised me the cancer is treatable, it’s containable. i’m on medication which is controlling it, and people have lived for 12 years on these drugs. Who knows what new treatments are around the corner?”
The star beat breast cancer in 2010, but now the disease has returned and spread to her brain, lungs, liver and bones. The first warning sign came in the
summer when Bernie spotted a lump on the same side of her chest as she had her mastectomy two years ago. A biopsy was carried out and a week later she learned the bad news. Her surgeon told her and her husband, Steve Doneathy, it was likely they would need to remove the lump, and a course of radiotherapy would follow. “I didn’t even cry. I think I was in shock a bit, and I was angry.” Bernie, who is touring in the musical Chicago until December, kept the news to herself but an appearance on ITV1’s Daybreak
earlier this month put her under further pressure to go public. Now, two weeks after explaining the full situation to her 13-year-old daughter Erin, she felt the time was right to speak. The singer, who also acted in The Bill and Brookside, will finish her run with Chicago and, after one day off, starts the pantomime Sleeping Beauty in Eastbourne. However, a planned tour by The Nolans, due to start early in 2013, has been postponed. Two of her sisters, Anne and Linda, have also suffered breast cancer and each has beaten the disease.
ESEARCH published in The lancet shows that women who quit smoking before the age of 30 drastically cut their chances of a smoke related death by 97%. The largest ever study of the hazards of smoking amongst women revealed that those who give up by middle age can extend their lives by more than a decade. in one of the biggest studies of its kind more than 1.3m women were recruited between 1996 and 2001. Those who were still smokers after three years were nearly three times more likely than non-smokers to die over the next nine years. Professor Sir Richard Peto from the University of Oxford, who co-wrote
the report, said: “If women smoke like men, they die like men. But whether they are men or women, smokers who stop before reaching middle age will, on average, gain about an extra 10 years of life.” Leanne Dixon, 21, a customer service assistant from Manchester, started smoking when she was 13. “These statistics really make me think. I’ve thought about giving up for ages but never have. But it makes you think that you have to stop while you’re young.” Lyn Faulkner started smoking at the age of 15. Now in her 40s, she says giving
up is not an option: “I think a lot about giving up but I don’t have the willpower. But when you think about living an extra 10 years, it really is a long time.” June Atherton, 66, used to smoke 60 cigarettes a day. She gave up at the age of 50 but was diagnosed with lung cancer just 10 years later. She said: “I stop young women in the street and tell them that they’re killing themselves by smoking. They think I’m mad but it’s an important message.” Paula Chadwick, chief executive of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation said: “This is important research and tells us that stopping as early as you can will prolong your life. More women are being diagnosed with lung cancer and we need to bring those figures down by supporting those who want to give up and making sure the young don’t start.”

Winehouse Wedding Dress Stolen
T
he dress Amy Winehouse’s wore for her wedding has been stolen from the London home where she died. The dress she wore to marry Blake Fielder-Civil in Miami in 2007 vanished along with a newsprint cocktail dress Winehouse wore for a live performance. Both dresses were due to be auctioned off for her foundation, which helps youngsters beat drugs and develop their music. The wedding gown was expected to reach around £100,000, and the cocktail dress she wore on the “Later With Jools Holland” show was expected to have raised monies in the region of £30,000. A spokesman for the Amy Winehouse Foundation said that although the dresses had been stolen from the performer’s
Camden home in north London, he added the property did not appear to have been broken into. “Both the stolen dresses are part of the Amy Winehouse story,” the spokesman said. The Back To Black singer died of alcohol poisoning in July 2011 aged just 27, after a long battle with drink and drugs. Her family has been cataloguing her possessions at the house, and realised only recently that the garments were missing. The spokesman said that “somebody might be trying to sell them for their own profit. People need to know they are not supposed to be out there on the market and they should not try to buy them,” he added. As with the dress the singer wore on the cover of Back To Black that sold for £40,000 last year, the money raised from the sales of the missing dresses would have gone into the Amy Winehouse Foundation.

Ain and wind from Hurricane Sandy lashed northeast of the uS and new York bore the brunt of what many came to call the one of a kind storm as frankenstorm it was the worst storm on record in the uS, affecting up to 50 million people on the heavily populated East Coast, and wreaked havoc causing up to 79 deaths.

Recorded as a Category 1 hurricane, it started with winds of about 85mph (140kph), the massive storm, which
was hundreds of miles across, brought with it a huge storm surge, hurricane winds, flooding rains and snow in the Appalachian Mountains. Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated from coastal areas, but much focus remained on New York. New York mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered the evacuation of 375,000 people in low-lying areas of lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. He said; “If you don’t evacuate, you are not only endangering your life, you are also endangering the lives of the first responders who are going in to rescue you. This is a serious and dangerous storm.”

We are not going to get bogged down with a lot of rules,” he said. Airlines cancelled more than 7,600 flights, with British Airways, Virgin and American Airlines halting all departures to the United States. Much of the Manhattan skyline was still in darkness on Tuesday night and it is feared it could be days before electricity is restored to some of those cut off. Forecasters predict the storm could end up causing around $20bn (£12bn) worth of damages in the US. Meanwhile, parts of West Virginia were buried under 3ft (1m) of drifting snow from the storm. York in particular has been pounded by this storm. Connecticut has taken a big hit.” More than 80 homes in New York City’s borough of Queens were destroyed in a fire caused by the storm. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who toured the area, said: “To describe it as looking like pictures we’ve seen of the end of World War Two is not overstating it. The area was completely levelled. Chimneys and foundations were all that was left of many of these homes.” The strong wind and rain has had other unexpected consequences. Police in New Haven reported that a skeleton had been found under the town green that may have been there since Colonial times. Police spokesman David Hartman said a woman was with other bystanders looking at a fallen oak tree, and spotted bones in the upturned roots. Hurricane Sandy - which was reclassified as a post-tropical storm when it hit US landfall - had already killed 69 people in the Caribbean. Many islands were ravaged by the storm, causing an estimated $16.5m (£10.3m) worth of damage in Jamaica and 70% of crops destroyed in southern Haiti.

‘is it too late for a new start?’
I’m 35 and have worked as an accounts clerk for 17 years. I’ve always really wanted to work as a nurse but have never done anything about it. Last year I broke up with my husband and now I want to follow my dreams but I’m worried it’s all too late. What do you think? Ann-marie
It’s never too late to do anything Ann-marie, to be fair, the only barrier is you! I’m laughing to myself at your perception of 35 being too late to change your life! I changed my career at 42 and ended up on the radio every week! You can do whatever you want to do with your life; you’ve still got at

‘Hiding from my abnormal smear’ Six months ago I had a smear test that came back with an abnormal result. I had the letter through the post and I was so shocked that I shoved it in a drawer and tried not to think about it. It’s been playing on my mind ever since though, and I’m so scared to find out what’s going on. Leanne least twenty years of your working life left haven’t you? Speak to your local college or university about what it would take to get into nursing and take things from there. Of course its not going to be plain sailing, you will need to be prepared for a good few years of hard work to get where you want to be! The fact is though, your future is entirely in your own hands and, provided you have determination and confidence, pretty much anything is possible.
Let’s say you carry on doing things your way Leanne and you end up being really ill, are you going to just ignore that too? This is your health you’re playing with sweetheart; you really need to get past these fears before it’s too late! You may find that the abnormal smear is nothing serious but then again, it could be an early warning of something that can be easily treated. The point is, the agonising worry you’re experiencing now is just going to go on and on until you speak to your doctor. Listen, I can identify with you all the way, I’m awful with dentists and in the past have suffered excruciating pain for far too long just because I let my fear control me.
Only you can change this but until you believe it’s the right thing to do, its not going to happen is it? Try to stop worrying and spend that time thinking logically about dealing with this. The reality of facing up to whatever this might be is probably far easier than enduring the constant worry you have now, trust me.
family favourites ‘i’m tired of doing all the work’
I’ve got two kids, a son and a daughter, and I’m completely ashamed to say that I favour my son. Aged 16, he’s only one year older than my daughter, but he’s got a great sense of humour and is really easy to talk to, while my daughter on the hand is moody, aggressive and always causing rows. Over the years I’ve always tried to treat them exactly the same, but lately I’m finding it increasingly more difficult when all I ever get back is abuse. Sheila
I think its human nature to have favourites, Sheila, but as a mother of two and a grown woman, you need to balance that out a little. Cast your mind back to when you were a 15 year old girl: remember all the strange new feelings you experienced and the physical changes you went through? Right now, your little girl desperately needs the benefit of your advice and experience even if she doesn’t realise it herself! Your son may be “Golden Boy”, but perhaps that’s because you’ve given him the confidence to be who he needs and wants to be. If I were you, I’d think long and hard about your relationship with your daughter before it’s too late. By the sounds of things, you’ve
grown apart and I know you don’t want to hear this, but the blame lies firmly at your feet! Teenagers are notoriously stroppy and often more than a handful but a good parent has patience and understanding. You’ve got to put some effort into helping your little girl. If you can manage that, despite her moods and your favouritism, you’ll reap the rewards and spare yourself a lifetime of regret. You’ve said it yourself; your son is confident and easy going so he will most likely understand that you need to focus on his sister for a while. Act now, Sheila, before the distance between you becomes too great.
I’ve been with my husband for 8 years now and we have a strong relationship. The only problem is that he is so lazy in bed. I have to do all the work while he just lies there. I’ve tried to talk to him about it and he brushes me off. I love him a lot but can’t help feeling frustrated by his laziness. What can I do to get him to take me seriously? Tina
Communication is the key here Tina so keep trying to get your husband to open up. Way too many people go on accepting things they’re not happy with when persistence is all they really need! Hopefully, in time, the old man will open up and start listening to you. Its early days yet but, ultimately, you would do well to speak to a sex therapist. I’ve
heard from many couples who have discovered, to their horror, that their sex lives have become a dull and boring routine. This is where sex therapy and some inventive ideas can help to transform the bedroom experience! Of course, all of this hinges on your husband acknowledging the problem. With that in mind, only you can decide how long you wait for him to do that! You say your relationship is strong but the dissatisfaction you’re feeling now does have the potential to spill over into other aspects of your relationship and wreak havoc! Keep trying to talk to him about this and emphasize to him just how important it is to you.

O
kay, so we don’t celebrate the typical 5th november bonfire night over here in Tenerife, but what’s wrong with getting into the spirit of things? A good old childhood memory for me was always eating Parkin on bonfire night. It was a treat that my mum always made at that time of the year when we would have family and friends over for a little bonfire party. The sticky sweet cake originates from Yorkshire. It has a moist texture and spicy flavour, lip smacking good!
ingredients
Oil, for greasing 225 g self-raising flour 1 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 egg, lightly beaten 115 g caster sugar 60 g butter 115 g golden syrup 225 ml milk
Method
Preheat the oven to 150°C/gas 2. Grease a 25 x 18cm cake tin and line with greased greaseproof paper. Sift the flour, ginger and bicarbonate of soda into a bowl. Stir in the egg and then the caster sugar, mixing well. In a small saucepan, melt the butter and the golden
syrup, stirring to mix. Remove from the heat and stir in the milk. Gradually stir the milk mixture into the flour and egg mixture. Stir until smooth, and then pour into the prepared tin. Bake for about 1 hour, or until the mixture starts to shrink away from the sides of the tin. Remove from the oven and turn out onto a wire rack
to cool. Cut into squares and serve, preferably after about 3 to 4 days when the parkin will have become nice and sticky.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples
Christmas In October Only a few years ago, here in Tenerife, the only place that you would see a Christmas tree was in a hotel lobby or in the home of an immigrant. Nowadays, the Christmas bug has hit the Canarians and so has the ridiculous habit of selling Christmas stock in October. I love Christmas. I love the feeling of that special time; I love all the buying and all the special foods that appear in the shops. I do, however, think that things have gone a bit ridiculous when the best before date on a box of mince pies is 24th December. This year, in one of the Spanish supermarkets, I have seen some lovely tin tree decorations that contain chocolate. They are only 1 euro each and they would last a lifetime. The only thing is that I saw them on 20th October. They will be sat
around for two months before they even see a Christmas tree and then another three weeks on the tree before anyone will eat the chocolate. In this climate I don’t think they will be worth eating. I think i will give them a miss no matter how lovely they are!
The Impossible
I don’t often go to the pictures. However, the movie “The Impossible” has been strongly advertised on Spanish television and I liked the look of it. It is a true story about a family who were involved in the great Tsunami that killed 250,000 people a few years ago. I sat back with my bucket of popcorn and a very large diet coke and didn’t move an inch during the whole movie. I didn’t touch my drink and hardly
ate any popcorn. The special effects were fantastic and the story had the audience crying with sadness and happiness and jumping when the wave hit the hotel. This is one movie that you must see. I saw it in Spanish, but it may be available in the south in English. The movie stars Ewan Macgregor and was financed by Mediaset, the company responsible for Telecinco TV channel here in Spain. It has been the biggest box office hit in Spanish history. If you go to see it, you will see why!
The Power Of Facebook There is no doubt that Facebook has become an entertainment force to be reckoned with. I prefer it to television. I spend many a happy hour playing games and watching video clips posted by others. Some people look at Facebook with a frown on their faces. This is typical of people who don’t understand it and can’t be bothered to find out about it. It’s my relaxation time and I’m not about to change that for anybody. There are those who sit at home watching television instead of going out with their friends, now that’s what I call sad! I would never stay in because there was something on the telly. What a waste of time! Meanwhile, Facebook is a great
advertising tool for Bitter and Twisted. We have our own page and we post lots of photos of the show on there. It is also a great place to play computer games and puzzles. It has reconnected me with some wonderful people that I worked with in my Pontin’s days and even helped me to advertise a reunion event last year at one of the camps that I worked at. Time to log on for a natter ..... Bye!
Only Here For The Beer
Scottish firm Brewmeister claim to have created the world’s strongest beer. It is a 65% alcohol drink called Armageddon. It has been so popular that there is a fortnight waiting list for delivery despite the fact that it costs £40 for a single 330ml bottle. The beer is brewed using crystal malt, wheat and flaked oats and is then freeze fermented to bring it to the required alcohol by volume. Just one pint of the beer contains a staggering 37 units of alcohol which is
twice the recommended weekly intake for a man. Brewmeister says the beer should be enjoyed like a fine whisky’. A spokesman said: “Despite being 65% alcohol the beer has a lot of flavour - malty, hoppy, slightly sweet and lots of yeast still in the beer, be careful though, smelling it is probably enough to put you over the limit!” The Brewery founder, Lewis Shand, said, “The phrase “delivers a punch” doesn’t quite cut it - delivers a supersonic charged explosion is probably more appropriate.”

Joe CaWleY
in the Spotlight By Barry Sparkle www.joecawley.co.uk Author of the awardwinning More ketchup than Salsa: Confessions of a Tenerife Barman. Travel Writer published in The Sunday Times,Telegraph, independent, Express, new York Post, Taipei Times etc Member of the British guild of Travel Writers. follow me @theWorldofJoe
WHERE ARE YOU FROM? Born in Bolton, Lancashire. WHEN AND WHY DID YOU MOVE TO TENERIFE? Moved to Tenerife in 1991 to buy the Smugglers Tavern with the naive notion that running a bar would be a doddle. WHEN’S YOUR BIRTHDAY? February 5th, 1965. I’m an Aquarius, whatever that means. DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE FAMOUS? My book seems to have gained a little notoriety on the island, but I wouldn’t say I was that famous. ALTHOUGH YOU ARE IN THE LIMELIGHT, DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE SHY? Shy no, quiet yes. I’m a great believer in only saying things that need saying. Too many people think they have to be talking all the time, just to plug a gap in the conversation. I’m what you would call a ‘stealth communicator’ rather than using carpet bombing conversation. IF YOU HAD A DIFFERENT JOB, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Possibly a clinical psychologist. Or a scarecrow. WHO AND WHY IS YOUR IDOL? Bill Bryson. Love his style of writing and he was the one who inspired me to write More Ketchup than Salsa; Confessions of a Tenerife Barman. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST DISASTER YOU HAVE EVER WHILST WORKING? No actual disasters but a series of
‘near-misses’ whilst in Nicaragua writing a travel feature for The Guardian. In the space of two weeks I experienced an earthquake in Granada, was evacuated from Ometepe Island due to a volcanic eruption and had my pocket-picked during a local fiesta. Provided plenty to write about though! WHAT IS YOUR TIPPLE? Jack Daniels, red wine and beer. Usually in separate glasses. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SPORT? Football. I play once a week and have followed Man Utd since childhood. WHAT TIME DO YOU GET UP IN THE MORNING? It varies. If I have a moment of inspiration, I’ll get up during the night and start writing. Usually though it’s around 7ish, in time to wrestle my kids into their school clothes. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? Maintenance man for a villa company in Italy. I was the fastest toilet seat replacer on the Tuscan coast. DO YOU DO CHARITY WORK? I’m the patron of Healing Hands to Matara, a charity I set up in Sri Lanka following the 2004 tsunami. Ten days after the disaster I was there writing features for The Evening Standard and The Independent. After filing my stories I stayed on and helped out where I could, which happened to be a convent in the south of the island. It was
a very harrowing experience and one I couldn’t forget when I returned. We now sponsor about 24 children who lost parents, fund two tea plantation schools and have set up a women’s sewing circle. If anybody would like to get involved either financially or as a volunteer, they’d be more than welcome. WHY DID YOU BECOME A WRITER? I guess because I communicate better through the written word than through the spoken word. After returning from a mindblowing trip to Peru, I decided that I wanted to share my exploits and thus pursued a career in travel writing. Fortunately I got a few lucky breaks and succeeded. Now however, most of my endeavours are in authoring and I’m finishing the follow-up to More Ketchup than Salsa before moving on to fictional ideas. DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS? I have a dog called Mouse, three guinea pigs, five chickens, two turtles and a goldfish. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? Spend as much time as possible with my two kids, Molly Blue and Sam. WOULD YOU EVER GO “BACK HOME” Not with my kids at the age they are. If they ever decided to go back to the UK, I’d probably follow. WHERE WAS YOUR LAST HOLIDAY?
Fuerteventura. It was a fab family holiday. TELL US A SECRET ABOUT YOU! I once appeared in an American TV commercial for Chevrolet, dressed as an alien and with my skin painted silver. IF YOU WERE A BISCUIT, WHICH WOULD YOU BE? A hobnob. Normally strong and determined but a little soft when dipped in hot liquids. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO EAT? Las Goteras in Tejina de Guia. Best steaks on the island. NAME ONE ACTOR/ACTRESS YOU WOULD LOVE TO GET NAUGHTY WITH? Michelle Pfeiffer. WERE YOU BULLIED AS A KID? No IF YOU WERE GIVEN A CHANCE, WOULD YOU ENTER BIG BROTHER? No. I’m too much of a private person. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE THE MOST DESIRABLE MAN/WOMAN ON THE EARTH? I have no idea. You’d better ask him/her. IF I CAME TO YOUR HOME AND
LOOKED INSIDE THE FRIDGE, WHAT WOULD I FIND? Cold things. WHAT’S YOUR BAD QUALITY? I procrastinate a lot. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS? Determined, quiet, caring. WHAT MAKES YOU ANGRY? Bullying, snobbery and jars that are hard to open. WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE DO YOU DISLIKE? See above. WHAT’S THE MOST EMBARRASSING SITUATION YOU HAVE BEEN IN? I was working for a video production company in America and we were filming a speech by President Clinton. Our crew were on a tight schedule so as soon as soon as he’d finished talking I started to unplug all our gear. Unfortunately I also pulled the plug on several national channels that were doing ‘live’ reports on what the president had just said. All I heard were desperate shouts of “who’s turned the power off?” I was stood with a power cable dangling limply from my hands. There was no way of denying it.

Ed Sheeran They’re writing for back “One Direction” on!... just in time for new “Twilight”
I
t seems that perma-frowning Kristen Stewart is as lucky in her love life as she is in nabbing career changing roles, as Robert Pattinson seems to have forgiven and forgotten. Although until recently the “Twilight” stars have never publicly acknowledged their relationship, it was to quote Stewart, “sooo obvious” however; it looked doomed when this July, the publication “US Weekly” exposed her affair with Married man Rupert Sanders, the director of her movie “Snow White and the Huntsman”. Stewart issued a public apology to Pattinson, stating, “This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important
thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I’m so sorry.” That seemed to be the end of the real-life Edward and Bella’s romance until recently; they have been photographed numerous times kissing and cuddling in public places..... just in time for the premiere and release of the final “Twilight” instalment, “Breaking Dawn-Part 2”!! Surely not a publicity stunt?! If it’s the real deal maybe it will give Kristen Stewart something to finally smile about-usually her expression resembles a camel that’s just swallowed a wasp!!
When my editor emailed me something I might be interested in for my column concerning the top voted Halloween costume I was delighted as I love dressing up for Halloween and would almost say I prefer it to Christmas, then I remembered-pressies, Xmas dinner, Xmas pud, mince pies etc, etc so, Christmas THEN Halloween! Anyway I digress, on reading it, I realised it was a thinly veiled promotion for the Blu-ray release of “Universal Monstersthe essential collection” and only featured the studio’s vintage classic monsters (the winner was Frankenstein with Dracula the runner-up.) With this in mind I decided to research some of the most popular costumes in general this year- I wonder if any of you wore any of these? Kids: Movie inspired costumes mainly with Spiderman top for boys and princess
Merida from “Brave” for girls. Teens: Zombies, corpse brides and an overall “undead” theme proved popular with both sexes this year!! Toddlers/babies: Disney seems as popular as ever with parents (let’s face it, these little ones weren’t doing the choosing here!) with Minnie Mouse and Snow White along with cute animals like owls, monkeys and weirdly, skunks!!! Adult: Most of us love a sexy Halloween outfit and for the girls, cat-woman and the Avenger’s Black Widow both proved popular, in fact superheroes rule with Ironman, Thor, Batman and Captain America scoring high!! Silly costumes included the good old inflatable sumo wrestler and Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest character “the Dictator”! Hope you had a great Halloween I’m gonna start planning my next costume now .......
What’s The Best Halloween Costume?
Xfactor protégés “One Direction” will release a “lost” song from singer-song writing ginger genius Ed Sheeran, as their next single.
The cookie-cutter boy band made by Simon Cowell out of contestants not quite strong enough to go it alone (sorry girls), will release the song “little things”, as the follow up single to “live while we’re young”, currently riding high in the charts. Written by Sheeran when he was only 17, the Brit winner said of the tune, “The great thing about it is I wrote that song with a girl called Fiona Bevan when I was 17 and we lost the song,” Sheeran told Capital FM. “I’ve kept in touch with Fiona,
we’ve done gigs and stuff and about two months ago she sent me the tune and was like, ‘Oh, do you remember this?’ “I was like, ‘Yeah, I do remember that’, and I was in the studio with the One Direction boys at the time and I was playing it and they were like, ‘We really like that’.” He went on to add that the song contained one of the favourite lines he had ever written in a song. So anyone who thinks “wrong”-sorry, “One Direction” are just paint by numbers clones spewed out by Cowells pop factorynot that I’m saying that’s my opinion-you may want to resist the urge to turn the radio off next time they’re on....it may actually be good!

CD Tenerife Open A Three Point lead At The Top
T
AkE a bow Jesus Alvaro, drafted in at left back to cover for the suspended llorente. The icod born player not only defended well but surged forward to beat three Real Aviles defenders to set up Aridane for the only goal of the game. Strength in depth is the key to 10 games unbeaten, Second placed Aviles should have been a big test for Tenerife but they were never allowed to take control. The old guard are leading by example, keeper Sergio
Aragoneses denied Diaz after nine minutes with a one handed tip over and was outstanding all afternoon. Jesus settled in nicely and started to probe forward, a good cross was put just wide by Aridane’s head. Loro saw his shot deflected off target but just before the break Jesus worked his magic and Aridane bagged his eighth goal of the season. Suso was a bit over eager and screwed wide to keep the lead slender at half time. The heavy rain arrived in the second half and must have blurred the ref’s vision as he booked Tarantino and gave a penalty to Aviles; the
best guess for baffled fans was hand ball. Naya took the kick but Sergio judged his low dive to the right perfectly and denied an equalizer. Lofty sub Miguel tested Tenerife in the air but vastly improved Tarantino was again a rock in the home defence. Nico made the biggest impact of the three home changes finding a Suso ball a stretch too far after charging towards goal, and two late saves from Sergio ensured another clean sheet. A rewarding day all round for the 9,199 crowd, and with another noon home game on Sunday, against Getafe B, it’s a great time to be a CD Tenerife fan.
Reality Puts The Boot in On CD Marino The previous weeks winning glimmer of hope was clinically snuffed out by Salamanca as CD Marino had another away day nightmare losing 5-0. The fragile defence was again exposed and a sending off for Alonzie after 71 minutes didn’t help matters. Matias was a bit shell shocked in goal as Riojo, Borja, and Igor made it 3-0 with just 37 minutes gone. Half time was a
welcome break and Marino showed some resistance in the second half until Alonzie got his second booking and was off. Zubiaurre got the scoreboard moving again with a penalty and Piojo completed the punishment a few minutes later. Salamanca leapt up into second place replacing Real Aviles and sadly for Marino they are the next opponents away on Sunday.

A fifth straight defeat, this time 100-75 at Barcelona will count for little as regional pride is at stake when CB Canarias host gran Canaria on Sunday at noon in la laguna. Every team in the ACB, Spain’s top division, has international class players, CB Canarias were put in the shade
by Navarro with his 21 point haul, most of them scored in the final two quarters of the game. Rost with 18, and Donaldson with 11 points helped to build a 2324 lead after the first period but the home team just got stronger as the match went on. Gran Canaria narrowly defeated CB Canarias in the pre season Toyota
the way back up the table and dropped in the pocket to concede the frame. Frosties then staged a comeback with Greer beating Victor, Damien defeating Eddie, after once again the blackball was potted out of turn. Channel 4 - 9:00 - 11:15 pm US Army officer Roy Miller (Damon) is thrown into the chaotic vacuum created by Saddam Hussein’s removal and the Allies’ handling of the immediate aftermath. His mission: to track down those elusive weapons of mass destruction. But, sent on one deadly wild goose chase after another, Miller begins to question the quality of the intelligence directing the operation. Frustrated, he begins to ask awkward questions and is soon being bounced between Poundstone (Kinnear), the Pentagon intelligence officer who insists the WMDs are there to be found, and the

CIA’s Martin Brown (Brendan Gleeson), whose knowledge of the country leads him to a very different conclusion, and Special Forces man Briggs (Isaacs), who appears determined to undermine Miller’s efforts. As he digs deeper, Miller begins to piece together the complex relationships and competing ideologies of those around him, as well as the possibility that he has also stumbled upon a political conspiracy... Also starring Amy Ryan as a journalist with shadowy connections and Khalid Abdalla as a local man who offers Miller invaluable, if blunt, insights.

Richard Hammond’s Miracles Of Nature
BBC 1 - 9:00 - 10:00 pm This new three-part series for BBC One follows Richard Hammond as he investigates the extraordinary superpowers of the animal kingdom and finds out how a multitude of amazing creatures are inspiring inventions at the very forefront of science. From South Africa to South America, Richard will travel the far reaches of the world to get up close and personal with both the tame and the wild and their remarkable abilities; from paragliding with Cape vultures to witnessing first-hand a pioneering
operation on a giraffe. Along the way he’ll devise entertaining scientific experiments which will in turn explain the extraordinary workings of each of these phenomenal creatures’ specific capabilities. Richard also meets scientists and engineers who have transferred these extraordinary talents to modern technology, from a stateof-the-art suit for jet pilots to withstand higher G-force, to a water-repelling substance to apply to everyday objects, including a mobile phone and a tailored suit.

Brazil With Michael Palin BBC 1 - 9:00 - 10:00 pm In episode 3, Road To Rio, Michael Palin visits the source of Brazil’s great mineral wealth, then travels to Rio - one of the world’s greatest cities - to see how this new-found wealth is being spent, changing the lives of millions of its inhabitants. Michael starts in the mineral-rich state of ‘Minas Gerais’ - General Mines - visiting an old gold mine once owned by the British, before going to see one of the area’s many vast opencast iron ore mines. Iron ore deposits are fuelling Brazil’s economic miracle but there is an environmental price to pay and Michael meets some of the Brazilians dedicated to preserving the natural
beauty of the state. Michael then heads to Rio De Janeiro, host to the next Olympics and World Cup. Rio has always had a reputation as a party town, but has also suffered from heavily armed drug gangs controlling the notorious shanty towns, making them some of the most violent places on Earth. Now the authorities are spending some of Brazil’s new money on healing the rift between the favelas and the rest of the city. Michael goes to see how lives are being transformed by the policy of ‘pacification’, which aims to drive the drug gangs out and fund new infrastructure and social programmes.

In Attenborough’s Ark, David explains why these animals are so important, and highlights the ingenious work of biologists across the world who are helping to keep them alive. His top 10 includes Darwin’s frog - the only frog in the world where the male gives birth to its young. There is also the olm - a salamander
that can live to a hundred. There’s also the Sumatran rhino - the smallest and most threatened species of rhino. David tells the story of the first-ever Sumatran rhino to be born in captivity in Asia. After years of failed attempts, a male Sumatran rhino was born at Cincinnati zoo. He was sent to Sumatra, where he was matched up with a native female. The result was a historic baby, which gives hope to the rest of the species. In Jersey, David introduces his favourite monkey - the mischievous black lion tamarin - which is being bred successfully at Durrell Wildlife Park.

Deirdre and Me: 40 Years on Coronation Street ITV 1 - 8:00 - 9:00 pm As Anne Kirkbride celebrates 40 years in Coronation Street this exclusive documentary looks at the woman behind those famous glasses. In this hour-long special Anne takes the cameras backstage at Coronation Street and to her private hideaway in Spain as she talks about everything from her battle with depression to being diagnosed with cancer. And from her close relationships with her fellow cast members to meeting her future husband on set. She explains how she coped playing one of
53
the most loved characters on our screens as she faced such personal issues behind-thescenes. Plus, Deirdre and Me re-unites Anne and William Roache, who plays her screen husband Ken, with Johnny Briggs, who played Mike Baldwin. The trio discuss the affair that rocked the Street almost 30 years ago when Ken discovered Deirdre had been sleeping with Mike. Featuring home movie footage from her own private collection, Anne talks candidly to the programme about her childhood and growing up on Saddleworth Moor in Greater Manchester.

astro-barilina’s twisted horoscopes
Aquarius 20 January - 18 February If somebody is showing brief interest in you, it’s only because you’re stranger than they are. As soon as they have siphoned and dissected every morsel of your brain, they’ll flip you off like a light switch and walk away. Keep focused, it’s only me, myself and I that you are interested in! Pisces 19 February - 20 March Here’s a thought my pitiful little guppy… next time you go shopping, add “reality” to your list. If you’re unable to locate even the smallest dose of that, try picking up a measure of “back bone.” Don’t you think it’s time to shed the fins and plant your feet? Firmly planting a Pisces is like trying to unzip your own pants without hands. Aries 21 March - 19 April You tend to be headstrong and deliberate in your actions. Basically you don’t give hoot about anyone. Most people hate you but you couldn’t care less. You’re mood this week may get you the sack!
Taurus 20 April - 20 May This week you will be blessed with the gift of imagination and sensitivity. Your psychic antenna will be tuned in and turned on! Tuned in to what? Or turned on by....? We can never really be sure.
Gemini 21 May - 21 June
Knock, knock, my wishful friend. I hate to burst your fantasy bubble but your love is perfectly capable of making decisions. Sadly, they’re just not capable of telling you! Find new love by waving your under garments out of the window and shouting to passers by “oi - have you seen my teeth?”
Cancer 22 June - 22 July
You may find a new job in sales this week; you will be good at it! Overflowing with the gift of enthusiasm, you could sell a fur coat to King Kong in the middle of summer, convincing him of evening frost. But then again, King Kong doesn’t exist, so maybe your enthusiasm doesn’t either!
Leo 23 July - 22 August
You will be kind to everyone this week. You are in your own little bubble. Cheerfully ignoring anything people have to say. Try to blatantly insult them and they’ll ignorantly smile right back as if your cutting remarks were transparent.
Virgo 23 August - 22 September
“Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get” yes we all know the saying. Stop being miserable this week and indulging in those calorie infested treats, after all there is one thing that you will get if you carry on - OBESE!
Libra 23 September - 23 October
Fashion conscious to the hilt this week. You’re sure to turn every head. You will sink your hard earned money into gym memberships, age defying products, and jaw dropping attire; only to find that you can’t keep it up..... I mean take a look in the mirror - it’s far too late now to try and sort yourself out!
Scorpio 24 October - 21 November
Who needs spontaneity, with its dreaded element of surprise, when you are someone who will be the same today, tomorrow, the next day and the next day and the next day and the next... Need I say more? If you’re seeking excitement, warmth, charisma, and a heartbeat, run far and fast! That bus has left the station!
Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December
Your motto for the week is, “If it feels good, tastes good, looks good, sounds good, and smells good, jump in head first and rub it all over!” Tips for the week - avoid hazardous chemicals, dog dirt, flammable liquids and wasp nests!
Capricorn 22 December - 19 January
You will be touched by a charming person this week, who brushes past you in a crowded place. You get excited, butterflies in your tummy, and your hormones start oozing. You turn around and realise the devastation that has just unfolded. Your perfect catch was nothing more than a mere stranger passing the flu onto you!
