Some went back to the U.K, others to Bangkok for bling and costumes, the rest enjoyed our beautiful Island. As you know, I went on a cruise with my husband. We all had a wonderful time and have all come back refreshed and

Unlike the rest of Spain, they were not able to take part in the property boom as ETA terrorists were extremely active at the time. So they developed industry in other ways in the region. Now it is a huge success story, it didn’t rely on one industry to make money and is now reaping the rewards. Makes you think.

Carmen Omaña deaths shocked a country already tired of tough austerity measures in the midst of recession and record unemployment, and the news sent thousands into the streets in anti-bank protests The Spanish Banking Association noted “social alarm created by mortgage-related evictions” and said it had

informed the government on November 8 of its members’ decision.

The banks had agreed “for humanitarian reasons and within a framework of social responsibility, to stop repossessions during the next two years in cases that involve extreme need,” it said in a statement. The decision was hammered out after a “deep and intense debate among associated banks so as to re-

lieve the situation of helplessness of many people caused by the economic crisis.” Amaia Egana was the second person to commit suicide in mainland Spain as she was about to be evicted from her home. In October, Jose Miguel Domingo, 53, was found dead in the courtyard of his building in Granada moments after bailiffs appeared to evict him. A day later, another 53-year-old man who had been unemployed for

four years jumped out of his apartment window in the eastern town of Burjassot as eviction loomed. He survived but with injuries. Mrs Egana reportedly jumped from the balcony of her home in Barakaldo, Bilbao. She worked at a local bus depot, was married to a former town councillor and had a 21-year-old daughter. Around 400,000 families have been evicted from their homes since the onset of Spain’s financial crisis in 2007. Protests against Spain’s mortgage rules took place in Madrid, and neighbours of the 53-year-old held a vigil outside the building. Francisco Algazira, said: “Shame on the government for these things. They are cutting and cutting and we can’t live anymore. The same thing that happened to that woman could happen to me tomorrow.” Jose Luis, a 52-year-old former teacher, said: “They need to stop rescuing the banks and start rescuing people because we are heading nowhere and the loan sharks must have a limit.” Local judge Juan Carlos Mediavilla told reporters at the scene that it was “necessary to amend current mortgage legislation” to prevent a recurrence of such events. And employment and social security minister Fatima Banez said the government deeply regretted Mrs Egana’s death. The European Court of Justice’s advocate general, Juliane Kokott, handed down a

non-binding legal opinion that criticised Spanish legal rules regarding evictions. Spain’s unemployment rate stands at 25% and the government predicts its economy, still in recession, will not grow until 2014. Bankia stopped three planned evictions in Tenerife, one of them the property of Carmen Omaña, the first of the hunger strikers in Santa Cruz. The spokesperson of the Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca de Tenerife announced the decision after a meeting between bank representatives and the man who is going to be a hero after this, Santa Cruz mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez. Sr Bermúdez pulled 1.5 million Euros out of the Ayuntamiento’s accounts with Bankia and cut off all dealing with the bank on the part of the municipality. Senora Omaña has said that she will accept the offer of moving to social housing with a flexible rent where her income, or lack of it, will be taken into account for rent assessment purposes. She expressed deep gratitude for the support she has received from the public. The bank tried to cover its back by insisting that these negotiations were not a platform for other cases, but specific to the people affected. In Spain, as in some other European countries, people who lose their homes to foreclosure remain on the hook for the unpaid balance of the mortgage.

The first large passenger ship into Los Cristianos has been, and gone. As part of the revamp of Los Cristianos harbour, the town is now able to receive cruise liners. The first to dock was the Sea Cloud, as part of its transatlantic route. More will follow in 2013, with the Albatros in April. There are currently negotiations with Royal Caribbean and other European lines to attract them to Los Cristianos. The future is looking good with all the commercial benefits to the town that cruise passengers will bring. Meanwhile, Santa Cruz saw five cruise liners docked in its own port, with some 16,000 on board. They were welcomed into the town with music and arts and crafts stalls. The dock of the port of los Cristianos, in the town of Arona, will be reinforced in the coming months. The works will be completed before Easter and will not affect the operation of the port. The Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has reported that this work will be to fix the damage caused by the rains that hit Tenerife in February 2010, when the wall lost a number of blocks. The damage caused by the bad weather of the last two years was evaluated by the Insurance Consortium, an organization that will pay 800,000 euros for part of the repair. The Port Authority, meanwhile, has funded the rest of the work. The works will cost 1,152,675 euros. The deadline to strengthen the dam is four months. A notice granting wall reconstruction was published in the Official State Gazette (BOE) adeje councillor for Obras y Servicios, Gonzalo Delgado Díaz, has announced that at last the Canarian Government has given authorization for the first phase of the coastal walkway between Callao Salvaje and Playa Paraíso. The works will be put out to tender in the next few weeks, and the Ayuntamiento hopes that they will start before the New Year. The first phase has a budget of 600,000 Euros and should take around six months to complete the 700m stretch. Three phone company engineers have been arrested and charged with swindling thousands of customers out of a total of 180,000 euros. The arrests were ordered after an investigation was called after bills received by many customers, were much higher than expected. Police said the engineers accessed junction boxes and exchanges to set up premium-rate services and then make thousands of calls to them from the numbers of unsuspecting subscribers. The next meteor shower will be Leonids, starting now and lasting until 21 November, peaking this weekend. And hopefully it will be quite a peak, because these are moonless nights. If they’re cloudless too, we could be in for a real treat. The best time for viewing is just before dawn, so it’ll be an early start for some serious meteor gazers, and a very late one for others! Astronomers say that the Leonid shower has produced some of history’s most impressive displays, and that one doesn’t need to identify the constellation Leo to see them.

“LoRo paRque” 40th anniversary

lORO parque, one of the biggest tourist attractions of islands, will celebrate its 40th anniversary, on December 17 but already is ahead of muchanticipated date and has two brand new inhabitants, a pair of Capybaras, the largest rodents in the world. For the first time, the zoo offers the option of enjoying these two animals together in their new home. That space is divided into several levels and heights and has a lake, in which they take long wet naps, and several gardens with terraces that allow an easy view of these curious animals, a great place for your children, they will surprise visitors with their many and varied “pranks”. These territorial bears, which look as curious as they sound attract a lot of attention they do not have any

teeth, so use their strong claws to fight against Jaguars and Pumas, and open anthills with their long, sticky tongue. According to calculations, they can eat more than

30,000 ants or termites per day. The male is called gingerbread man and comes from a zoo in Vienna; the female comes from Scotland.

The Capybaras are rodents of greater size and weight in the world and will spend several hours a day in the Lake of the enclosure, enjoying long wet NAPs.

International Strike Day

Flights were cancelled, ports closed and transport systems brought to a standstill in many parts of Spain and neighbouring Portugal. Riot police in Madrid fired rubber bullets at demonstrators as tempers boiled over during a demonstration staged in the capital’s Plaza de Cibeles. However, in Tenerife, the general strike made little or no impact whatsoever. What was a great success, however, was a march by the public through Santa Cruz in the evening. Some 100,000 poured into the streets of the Capital carrying banners protesting at the social effect of cuts, and saying that the Canaries cannot tolerate any more. Government sources said that the march was quiet and that only some 50,000 turned out. In Gran Canaria, there were protests throughout Las Palmas, with similar numbers, and similar official figures from the Government. Thankfully it all passed off peacefully: these people were protesting for their lives and livelihood, and had no intention of making the march, or allowing it to

become, violent. However, Spain’s interior ministry reported that 110 people had been arrested there and some 40 injured during the protests, 18 of them police officers. Extra police were on standby ahead of rallies called for the early evening in various cities across Spain. Spain’s main unions, the UGT and CCOO, claimed the strike had been a success, with 78pc of workers observing the 24-hour walkout and with turnout in the public sector above 50pc.

Italian police injured

At least 17 police officers were injured after antiausterity protests in Rome, Milan, and Turin turned violent. In Turin around 20 demonstrators beat one officer with baseball bats, and in central Milan there were running battles between riot police and protesters, at least five officers were hurt. In Rome, at least 60 people were arrested after clashes broke out between protesters and police along the banks of the Tiber River, in the heart of the city. Protesters armed with homemade shields threw stones and bottles, to which the police responded with baton charges and tear gas. With unemployment among young people stand-

ing at around 35pc, students in Turin burnt the flag of the European Union.

French launch 130 marches

Thousands of French protesters took part in 130 marches around the country “for employment, solidarity in Europe and against austerity”. In Paris, the leaders of the two main unions, CGT and CFDT, joined forces

for the first time since Socialist president François Hollande took power. Protesters in the capital chanted, “Let’s demand solidarity” and “Austerity can seriously damage your health”. In Marseille, protesters chanted: “The people want staff jobs, modern public services that work and retirement at 60.” François Chérèque, head of the CFDT, said the pro-

tests were directed against European heads of state to tell them: “You cannot impose this type of austerity, it’s too dangerous for the economy and, above all, too dangerous in social terms. It leads to tragedies, a blocked economy. We cannot go further,” he said. The more militant CGT urged a “move from resistance to offensive action”. Unions oppose the French

president’s decision to give businesses 20bn Euros in tax breaks to boost their competitively. The measures are financed by cuts in public spending and an increase in sales taxes. The French government denies imposing austerity, despite plans to reduce public spending by 12bn Euros a year over its five-year mandate, for a total reduction of 60bn Euros by 2017.

Gran Canaria drug Ring smashed

SpaniSh police have reported that they have broken up a network which financed the so-called Zemun clan of Serbian mafia from the profits from marijuana grown on gran Canaria. police arrested 25 people and seized about 700 plants in greenhouses and open-air plots.

The investigation leading to the take-down of the criminal group was launched after the arrests last February of Luka Bojovic, a Serbian mafia capo and the mastermind behind the 2003 murder of Serbia’s then-prime minister, Valadimir Milisavljevic, and two other hit men. Seventeen arrests were made in Las Palmas, eight in the cities of Benidorm and

Villajoyosa, in south eastern Spain, according to police. Officers carried out 33 raids in which they seized 840,000 euros in cash, 65 grams of cocaine, luxury watches and jewellery from two bank safe deposit boxes. The investigators located three pot plantations, the largest of them having almost 500 plants in a multi-story house located in Las Palmas.

CiT - Centro de iniciativas Turísticas - of the South of Tenerife celebrated the gánigo awards at the San Blas hotel. More than 400 people attended this annual event which rewards companies, individuals and collectives who work every day to improve the tourism sector. The ceremony was headed by the Cabildo’s President,

Ricardo Melchior; Vice President and Director of tourism of the island administration, Carlos Alon-OS, and hosting, the Mayor of San Miguel, Valentín González and the councilman of tourism, Candelaria Flores.There were also representations from the social, business and political life of the region, among them the eight municipalities, represented by their mayors. This year, CIT gave the Honourable mention to pro-

fessionals and volunteers who helped extinguish the forest fires that ravaged Guia of Isora, Adeje and Vilaflor. In one of the most emotional moments of the night, a group of children took to the stage showing they were the future to prevent this kind of disaster happening again. Children themselves, on the initiative of the CIT, have planted eight pine trees in Vilaflor to represent the eight municipalities.

Anti-Smoking Campaign A total of 11,667 students attending 52 centres in Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura have participated in a programme of intervention on smoking in secondary education (ITES) organized by the health promotion service. The results at the end of the programme have shown a decrease in the number of student smokers of 56% over those who did not take part in the programme. The decline occurred in both boys (45%) and girls (63%).

The Ministry of health of the Canary Islands said that the main cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in 80% of cases the culprit is tobacco. Over 210 million people suffer from this disease around the world in the world, with 3 million deaths per year. COPD gradually injures the lungs and causes irreversible damage to the respiratory system. However it is a disease that produces few, slow symptoms, which means that those affected may

not find out until the disease is at a very advanced stage. The Ministry of health is promoting the early diagnosis of this disease from primary care and supports the multidisciplinary strategy for the management of COPD in the region, which proposes an approach to global disease of coordination between

the different health care fields and different professionals focusing on the patient which allows the best care on an on-going basis. At the same time, the service of health promotion of the General Directorate of public health is developing a series of actions aimed at the prevention of tobacco use in the young and encourag-

ing those who have already started the habit, to give up.

DEVELOPED ACTIONS

The Health promotion service has made important actions for prevention and control of tobacco use as a main factor for the development of COPD through implementation of a training programme aimed at

healthcare professionals involved in the project ‘Health classrooms’. It has also has launched a campaign with the motto ‘ The best thing is not to start. The best thing is to leave it ‘. In its bid to improve the diagnosis of COPD the Ministry of health has provided spirometers, vital in the use of diagnosis

and monitoring of the disease, to more than 40% of the basic health centres in the Islands. With this objective, the coverage was expanded in 2011 and 13 were assigned to Gran Canaria and Tenerife; Lanzarote has five spirometers; four were installed at Fuerteventura and La Palma, and two each in La Gomera and El Hierro.

BA Is Back

British Airways is restarting flights from Gatwick to Tenerife and Lanzarote from the summer of 2013. The airline last flew to Lanzarote and Tenerife in March 2008, when services were operated by its former franchise carrier GB Airways from Gatwick.

Last Friday the 9th November we raised an amazing 1,150 Euros to finance the vet care of a very special lady called Bess. Bess is just a year old, abandoned on Golf del Sur recently with a debilitating leg injury, which we have pledged to sort out. Cruelly, her leg was broken at the shoulder several months ago and left to mend itself. This now must be corrected so that Bess can have the mobility that she deserves, but first she is undergoing three months of physiotherapy to stretch the shortened tendons. Her foster parents Jason and Ang are doing an amazing job, but as much as they love Bess, with three other rescue

GANGNAM STYLE!!!!!! dogs they know they cannot keep her permanently. If you could give Bess a loving home please call Sue on 629 388 102 and we can arrange a meeting. Bess enjoyed the fundraiser, meeting everyone who wanted to say hi. Huge thanks to the many acts who gave their time - Aidy Evans, Dave Michaels, Steve Delsey, Kerry Railton, Michaela, Ged Bolton, Ian Anderson, Pip Brown and Indiana – all introduced by Suzy Q. A final twist was provided by resident Sean Wren who had the audience in uproar. You had to be there. The fund was swelled by collection boxes which had been placed in Slippers Bar and Bar 180, and the total really was staggering and heartwarming. Not only

can we now ensure Bess’ needs are met, we have been able to vaccinate the Guaza 6 puppies, and keep some money in reserve for other urgent cases. A million thanks to all. As our shops are now getting busier for the winter season, we are happy to announce that this week we have been able to buy over 2000 kilos of dog food for our dogs in Fasnia Refuge. Please continue to support our shops so we can continue and increase the level of support.

We have so many puppies to rehome. With Live Arico’s help a litter of very young pups were rescued from the Guaza mountain wild pack and have been hand fed by the lovely Sarah Wilson. Mirages of Islas Canarias Tom Tolkein, a North Yorkshire landscape photographer has released an 80 page art book entitled ‘Mirages’ celebrating the vivid and varied landscapes and seascapes of Yorkshire, Cornwall, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. ‘Mirages’ is Tolkien’s first full photographic work, compiled over two years; the work includes panoramic spreads, abstract photography and compressed telephoto work; as well as more traditional photographic landscapes of his home country as well as beautiful images of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Tolkien drew his inspiration for the book from his home surroundings in North Yorkshire. ‘There’s always something to photograph here. Whether it’s the North Yorks Moors landscapes or seascapes around Scarborough or Bridlington, there’s an abundance of creative opportunity. I moved to North Yorkshire in 2004 for a teaching job and living and working here rekindled my love

Spain Says“Yes” To Gay Marriage The Constitutional Tribunal, Spain’s highest court, has ruled that homosexual “marriage” is not prohibited by the Spanish Constitution.

The news comes after a lawsuit initiated in 2005 by the then-opposition People’s Party (PP), which now controls the government, against a law establishing homosexual “marriage” passed by the then-ruling Spanish Socialist Worker’s

Party and its allies. The law also allows “married” homosexual couples to adopt children. The basis of the lawsuit was Article 32 of the Spanish Constitution, which states that “men and women have the right to contract matrimony with full juridical equality,” therefore implying that marriage can only be solely between a man and a woman. The new ruling establishes that Spain and Portugal, the only two historically Catholic countries in Europe, to treat homosexual unions as “marriages” and to allow

couples to adopt children. Other European countries that have approved such marriages include Holland, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Denmark, and Iceland. Reports in Spanish Newspapers suggest that, ac-

Iberia Airline Is In Crisis

Spanish airline Iberia has announced plans to cut 4,500 jobs, around 22% of its workforce, as part of an overhaul aimed at rescuing the struggling airline. International Airlines Group, formed by the merging of Iberia and British Airways in 2011, said the Spanish carrier would cut capacity by 15% across its network and remove 25 aircraft from service. The group posted a record operating loss of 262 million euros for the first nine months of 2012. Iberia has a natural advantage for long-haul routes to Latin America, thanks to its geographical location, but low-cost carriers have taken the greater share of the short and medium-haul business. “Iberia is in a fight for survival and we will transform it to reduce its cost base so it can grow profitably in the future,” IAG chief executive Willie Walsh said. IAG has also

made an offer worth 113 million Euros to buy the 54.15% of Spanish low-cost carrier Vueling, and said it expected to generate savings from fully integrating the Barcelonabased airline into the group. Iberia chief executive Rafael Sanchez-Lozano said the airline was unprofitable in all its markets and warned of more drastic action if unions fail to agree to the restructuring plan by the end of January 2013. He acknowledged that the plan is harsh, but said if

profound structural changes are not put in place the “company’s future is bleak.” He said Iberia was losing money at the tune of 1.7 million euros ($2.1 million) per day across all of its markets. IAG posted an operating profit of 17 million Euros in the nine months through the end of September. The owners of the HRT Formula One team hope to sell the Spanish based company to new investors. The current owners, investment group Thesan Capital; have revealed they are looking to relinquish control just 16 months after buying the majority stake in the team from José Ramón Carabante.

The team entered Formula One at the start of 2010 but remain without a points finish approaching the end of their third season in the sport. A statement on the official website states: “The current owners of HRT Formula 1 Team would like to confirm that they are currently in talks with a number of groups interested in buying the team.”

El pais announced last month there would be 129 layoffs and 20 early retirements, bringing the total number of job cuts to 149 out of about 460 staff. all remaining staff are being forced to take a 15% pay cut as the paper struggles against a slump in advertising and the rise of internet news, where profits are hard to come by. On Monday, the journalists discovered who will be forced out of the newspaper, first published in 1976 during Spain’s transition to democracy after the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. One of the paper’s big names, journalist Ramon Lobo, wrote on his Twitter account after learning of his departure. “I am on the list, my profile online and

my career is not enough.” Another well-known El Pais journalist, Manuel Cuellar, said he received an email on Sunday telling him to appear on Monday to hear the details of his redundancy. “After 17 years, I am a number,” he wrote, also on Twitter. Basque Region – A Spanish Success Story

The Spain is littered with unfinished apartments, reminders of the country’s disastrous construction boom gone very badly wrong. However, in the green valleys and cliffs of the northern Basque Country it is a different story. Why? For decades, terrorist attacks by the Basque separatist group ETA meant no one wanted to build here. Now with a cease-fire, currently in its third year, the region is losing its reputation for terrorism and gaining one for something else: Economic growth otherwise unseen in the rest of Spain. “With the threat of terrorism, this was not a very attractive place for people to come,” said Jose Luis Curbelo, general manager of the Basque Institute for Competitiveness. “So housing was an activity to house people, rather than to invest. The real estate sector here was a normal activity. It was not totally overgrown like in the rest of the country.” That has helped the Basque Country bounce back from recession faster

than the rest of Spain, which is struggling to erase budget deficits and avoid an international bailout that could destabilize the whole of Europe. Because not all jobs were dependent one just one industry, the unemployment rate in the region is less than half that of the nation’s 25%. Spain’s economy is forecast to shrink by nearly 2% in 2013, but the Basque Country is hoping to post growth reports in 2013. And though its 2.2 million residents make up only 4.5% of Spain’s population, they contribute to nearly 10% of its exports. One success story is that of railway manufacturer CAF, a 100-year-old company, with headquarters in the region. More than three-quarters of CAF’s sales are abroad, unaffected by Spain’s economic crisis, and the company has posted operating profits of 10% or more for the last five years. It makes train cars for Amtrak, the Washington metro and light rail systems in Sacramento, Houston and Pittsburgh, plus it has projects in Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Hong Kong and Mexico, among others. It may be just luck that CAF’s business diversified abroad when Spain’s debt crisis hit. But its geography, and its history, didn’t hurt. The Basque Country is rich

Mother Arrested For Baby Murder

A mother of a baby found dead in the freezer of her home is being held without bail on suspicion of murder. The woman, who has not been named, was arrested after the baby’s body was found at home in Pilas, southern Spain. According to the local mayor, Jesus Maria Sanchez, the woman, who is married with two other children, has admitted she was the deceased baby’s mother. An autopsy and DNA tests will determine the cause of death and confirm the parentage of the baby, since, according to the mayor, the husband had no idea his wife was pregnant.

The husband found the baby’s body in the freezer while he was cleaning the house, after which he called his brother, a fire fighter, who rushed to the house with several of his colleagues. They subsequently called the police, who then went after the woman where she

I would say that almost all the time, you can find somebody ready to come into the company and start working the next day,” said Aitor Galarza, CAF’s director of quality and strategic planning. “It doesn’t happen that easily with our factories in the south of Spain.” Galarza has another theory about the Basque Country’s productivity: The region gets more than 200 days of rain a year. “So when you’re working at your factory, you never think of going to the beach in the afternoon, or just having fun,” he said, laughing. “That also moves your mind to the work you are doing.”

vodafone in trouble

ThE British telecommunications group wrote down the value of its network businesses in Spain and italy by £5.9 billion, as it struggles to weather the economic storm in Europe. Equivalent to nearly $9.4 billion, it has pushed Vodafone to a £1.9 billion loss for the first six months to September, in contrast to a £6.6 billion profit in the same period last year. The chief executive, Vittorio Colao, blamed rising unemployment and economic stagnation in Spain and Italy, where Vodafone are the number two carriers behind Telefónica, in Spain, and Telecom Italia Mobile. “Our results reflect tough market conditions, mainly in Southern Europe,” Mr. Colao said. He reiterated that the company’s strategy remained one of cost-cutting and investing in faster networks to increase the sale of wireless data and offset other declines.

In the six months up to September, Vodafone reported its revenue fell 7.4%, to £21.8 billion, from £23.5 billion a year earlier. In Southern Europe, the declines were twice as steep, with revenue falling 18.1%, to just under £5 billion. Revenue fell 18.4% in Italy and 19.3% in Spain. About half of the declines resulted from the weakening of the euro against the pound, which slashed the value of Vodafone’s earnings in the singlecurrency bloc. The company also faltered in Germany, Vodafone’s largest single market in Europe, where revenue from their voice service and text messaging, its staple source of earnings, is being increasingly eroded by free Internet-based mobile calling and smartphone message applications. total solar eclipse Thousands of star gazers, scientists and amateur astronomers gathered together in Australia to watch one of nature’s biggest spectacles - a total solar eclipse. Although weather forecasters had predicted cloud, the skies cleared as the eclipse began and there was a clear view of the sun, moon and Earth aligned. As the last glimpse of the sun’s rays disappeared, there were cheers from people who had gathered on beaches in the state of Queensland. The region was then plunged into darkness for two minutes. “Immediately before, I was thinking, ‘Are we gonna see this?’ And we just had a fantastic display - it was just beautiful,” said Terry Cuttle of the Astronomical Association of Queensland, who has seen a dozen total solar eclipses over the years. “And right after it finished, the clouds came back again. It really adds to the drama of it.” Twitter, as is usual these days, played its part, “Wow, insects and birds gone quiet,” one tourist, Geoff Scott, tweeted. Another, Stuart Clark, said: “This is it. Totality now. Utterly beautiful.” Another eclipse watcher Simon Crerar said: “Day into night, unbelievable, goosebumps, speechless, amazing.” Totality was at 6.38am local time

One time Radio One star and presenter of Top Of The Pops Dave Lee Travis has been arrested by police investigating the Jimmy Savile child abuse scandal He is being held on suspicion of sexual offences.

He was arrested by detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Operation Yewtree at his home in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, at 7.45am on Thursday morning. A number of police cars, both marked and unmarked arrived early in the morning, a further two more cars arrived later. It is believed that Dave Lee Travis’ wife was at home at the time. Previous statements from Dave Lee Travis state that he

has always strenuously denied any misconduct or any sexual assault allegations made against him. It is understood that the allegations do not directly involve Savile and are another of the arrests classed under the strand of the investigation termed “others”. The Metropolitan Police Service is leading a national investigation into abuse allegations made against the disgraced Jim’ll Fix It presenter. Police are looking

at three strands within their inquiry - claims against Savile, those against Savile and others, and those against others. Most of the “others” allegations have been made against people associated with the entertainment industry. Lucky Escape

Roger Latham, the owner of plane that crashed in Mississippi, killing all three people on board and injuring another person on the ground, skipped the flight at the last minute to go on a hunting trip. He said he had considered taking the short flight with his flying instructor and a couple of other experienced pilots to attend a conference on flight safety held by the Federal Aviation Administration. But his decision to go hunting instead saved his life after his 1972 Piper PA-32 crashed into a home in a west Jackson neighbourhood shortly after take-off, killing all three on board and injuring a woman inside the home who escaped.

Amongst the victims was Mr Latham’s flying instructor, John Edward Tilton Jr., 65, who was a decorated helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War and had served with the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), reaching the rank of colonel. “He was one of the finest Christian men I knew,” Mr Latham said of Mr Tilton. “We had three great men who lost their lives. I just want to wake up in a while and say, ‘This didn’t happen.”’ The other two men aboard were William C. Young and David Wil-

liams. All three victims were certified flight instructors and CAP pilots. Mr Williams, 69, was a former Air Force F-101 fighter pilot who served in leadership roles with the Civil Air Patrol with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Mr Young, 78, had joined the Civil Air Patrol in May 2011. He was a major. Mr Latham said his plane had been parked in a hangar for a month and they wanted to take it out for a short flight before he flew it to Gulf Shores, Alaska, for

Jamar Funchess, a 20-yearold student at Jackson State University, lives two doors away is a long-time neighbour and friends with Ms Jamison’s son. He ran outside after hearing a loud crash and saw Ms Jamison trying to climb out of her bedroom window. He ran over and pulled her out. He said she was not screaming or crying and seemed to be in shock.

Mrs Jamison’s husband, Roosevelt, said his wife was doing “OK,” but declined to answer other questions, saying he was searching for answers himself. National Transportation Safety Board investigators arrived at the scene on Wednesday. A preliminary report on the crash is expected in ten days. Board investigator Paul Cox said someone in the plane reported engine trouble before the crash, but the nature of the problem was not clear.

Software Giant On The Run

The anti-virus software pioneer, John McAfee denies killing neighbour Gregory Faull, 52, who was found dead in a pool of blood at his home on Sunday. He says he is moving every four hours to avoid police who want to question him about the murder. Three people who worked for Mr McAfee, 67, are being questioned, said Belize police.

Mr McAfee, who has amassed a £63m fortune, told CNBC television he had been “accused of something I didn’t do”. He said he was keeping on the move out of fear for his safety, worried that police want to “shake him

down” and extort money from him. A police report said that Mr Faull was shot in the back of the head. It said there were no signs of a break-in, but a laptop and mobile phone were missing. “We are looking for Mr McAfee to interrogate him,” police spokesman Raphael Martinez said, adding he was “not suspected of murder”. Police raided Mr McAfee’s mansion on Ambergris Caye, an island off the north eastern coast of Belize, to question him about the murder. Earlier in the year, police had searched the property for weapons and drugs, and detained him for several hours. Mr McAfee claimed afterwards he had been arrested because he refused to make a donation to a local politician’s campaign.

woRLd FLoods The latest casualty to the extreme wet weather around the world is Venice, currently the rain and strong winds has led to 70% of Venice being flooded. authorities said sea levels in the lagoon city reached a peak of 5ft (1.5 metres) above normal before receding albeit slightly. This is the 6th highest level recorded since 1872, when records began.

Moveable barriers rising from the sea bed to protect Venice from flooding high tides are being worked on but will not be operational before 2014.

In Tuscany, around 200 people were evacuated from their homes because of heavy rain which caused mudslides. The most affected region was the province of

Massa and Carrara, around 50 people were evacuated and a car was swept away by an overflowing river. Residents have been told to avoid going into the streets and to stay in

the upper floors of their homes. In Liguria, the region bordering Tuscany, 30 people were forced to flee their homes. In anticipation of the floods two days ago,

authorities issued warnings and planned security measures to avoid casualties after 13 people died in Tuscany and Liguria a year ago In Pisa, some streets have

been without electricity. The bad weather is said to be heading slowly towards the centre of the country and is set to hit Rome where civil defence forces have been put on alert.

Government Google Surveillance Governments all over world made nearly 21,000 requests for access to Google data in the first six months of this year, according to the search engine. Its Transparency Report indicates government surveillance of online lives is on the rise. The US government alone asked for details 7,969 times in the first six months of 2012. Google, as with other technology and communication companies, regularly receive requests from government agencies and courts around the world to have access to content. It has been publishing its Transparency Report twice a year since 2009 and has seen a steady rise in government demands. Back in 2009, it received 12,539

requests. The latest figure stands at 20,939. “This is the sixth time we’ve released this data, and one trend has become clear: government surveillance is on the rise,” Google said in a blog post. The report acts as a barometer for government behaviour around the world, a Google spokeswoman told the BBC. “It reflects laws on the ground. For example in Turkey there are specific laws about defaming public figures whereas in Germany we get requests to remove neo-Nazi content,” she said. In Brazil we get a lot of requests to remove content during elections because there is a law banning parodies of candidates. We hope that the report will shed light on how governments interact with online services and how laws are reflected in online behaviour,” she added. The US generally tops the

charts for data requests. France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK are also in the top 10. In France and Germany it complied with fewer than half of all requests. In the UK it complied with 64% of requests and 90% of requests from the US.

In one example from the UK, Google received a request from police to remove 14 search results that linked to sites allegedly criticising the police and claiming individuals were involved in obscuring crimes. It did not remove the content.

Experts say that anything that draws your attention away from the road can be a potential cause of an accident. That includes actions and situations as innocuous as snacking behind the wheel or postponing a bathroom break. Most adults who drive regularly admit to engaging in distracting behaviour, according to a poll taken by harris interactive/ healthDay in new York. 86% eat or drink while driving, 59% use a hand-held mobile, 41% fiddle with their gpS, 37% text and 14% apply makeup.

“Distracted driving can be deadly driving,” says Julie Lee, vice president and na-

tional director of AARP Driver Safety. “Researchers are finding that any type of distraction is risky, not just the ones we typically think of as dangerous, like texting or talking on the phone.” In fact, a study led by Dr. Peter Snyder, vice president of research for Lifespan, found that a strong urge to go to the toilet can impair your functioning as effectively as drinking alcohol or being sleep deprived. And the effects of hunger, thirst and tiredness on attention spans and reflex times have been well known for years. Here are three other potentially distracting behaviours and situations that you might not have thought of as risky: Eating and/or drinking – We all do it, especially when we’re in a hurry to make an appointment, have skipped a meal or just can’t make it through the rest of the drive without a snack. But eating or drinking while driving involves taking at least one hand – and part of your attention – off the wheel. Unrestrained pets – Many pet owners think of their dogs as their children. But

while they’re diligent about buckling up the children, they don’t always secure their dogs while in the car. Allowing your pet to ride unrestrained, in your lap, beside you or on the backseat, is dangerous for you and him. A recent survey found that 65% of court cases related to at least one dog-related distracting behaviour while driving, such as petting (52%) or allowing the dog to sit in

their lap (17%). Restraining your pet can help minimize driver distractions, restrict the pet’s movement in case of a crash, and protect pets from potentially being harmed by inflating airbags. Rubbernecking – Slowing down or pulling over to get a better look at an accident not only displays a lack of tact, it could also cause another accident. If your eyes are on the crash you’re approaching

– or passing – they’re not on the road ahead of you. “Although drivers age 50 and older are less likely to engage in distracting behaviour like texting or using a

hand-held mobile behind the wheel, they may face other challenges, such as natural changes in vision, hearing and reaction times,” says Lee.

ThE locks have been changed at the Tower of london, home of the Crown Jewels, after a thief was spotted by guards stealing a set of keys from a sentry post. The famous Beefeaters did not give chase, as they are not allowed to leave their posts, so they radioed for help instead. The keys were to the Tower’s drawbridges as well as conference rooms and a restaurant, according to historic Royal palaces, which operates the tourist attraction. A Historic Royal Palaces spokeswoman said: “We can confirm that an incident took place at the Tower and that this is now a police matter, so we are unable to discuss details. We can however confirm that during this incident, keys for a restaurant and conference rooms were taken together with a key to an internal lock to the Tower drawbridges that is not accessible from the outside. It would not have been possible to gain access to the

Tower with any of these keys. All the affected locks were immediately changed,” she added. We have carried out an internal investigation and have concluded that our wellestablished security systems and procedures are robust. However on this occasion, these procedures were not carried out to the expected standard. A staff disciplinary procedure is under way to address this issue.” Tower chiefs insisted that the priceless Crown Jewels were never at risk of being stolen and Police h a v e launched an investigation after the theft. A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “An allegation of theft has been

made to police, which is being investigated by Tower Hamlets CID.” The Tower of London is guarded by the Yeoman Warders, nicknamed Beefeaters, alongside a private security firm. The yeomen first formed the Royal Bodyguard in 1509 but their origins go back to the reign of Edward IV in 1461. Serving Beefeaters must have completed at least 22 years military service, and are synonymous with the Tower, as are the six resident ravens. Legend has it that the kingdom and Tower will fall if the ravens ever leave the highsecurity site, each raven has a clipped wing to prevent such an occurrence. The Crown Jewels have had an allure for countless visitors over the years and the British monarchy is the only one in Europe that still uses symbolic gems in coronation ceremonies.

nEW Zealand police have arrested a man on suspicion of planning to attack the prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall. Believed to be an antiroyal supporter, the man, reportedly in his 70s, was spotted on CCTV carrying an unidentified item. “A 74-year-old was arrested for preparing to commit an assault before the arrival of the royal couple,” an officer said. However, the unnamed man got “nowhere near” the couple. Charles and Camilla are coming to the end of a tour of Australia and New Zealand marking the Queen’s diamond jubilee. Their visit to Auckland’s waterfront passed without incident and they will remain in New Zealand until the end of the week.

China is planning another manned space mission as early as next summer according to its official news agency Xinhua. The Shenzhou-10, with three crew members, is aiming for a launch window in June according to niu hongguang, deputy commander-in-chief of the manned space programme. Mr niu also stated that officials had identified a back-up launch window for July or august and that one of the three astronauts would probably be a woman. China sent its first female astronaut, Liu Yang, into space earlier this year on the Shenzhou-9 in the country’s first manual space docking mission. The docking procedure was a huge milestone in the country’s ambitious space programme that includes building a space station by 2020. China has said it is working towards landing a

man on the moon, but has not specified a time-frame. The country sent its first man into space in 2003. It completed a spacewalk in 2008 and an unmanned docking between a module and rocket last year. The last time a man landed on the moon was during the United States’ 1972 Apollo 17 mission. Beijing has said it will also send an exploratory craft onto the moon for the first time in the second half of next year

and transmit back a survey of the lunar surface. China sees its space programme as a symbol of its rising stature, growing technical expertise, and shows the Communist Party’s success in turning around the fortunes of a once poverty-stricken nation. The US is not expected to test a new rocket to take people into space until 2017, and Russia has stated that manned missions are no longer a priority.

CliVE Dunn, best known for playing butcher lance Corporal Jones in Dad’s army, has died at the age of 92. he died at home in portugal, following a short illness. Dunn was an artist who listed performances in theatres and music halls, as well as on TV, even had a No 1 hit song with Grandad. It was the character of dithering Corporal Jones, with catchphrase “Don’t Panic” that turned Dunn into a much-loved TV legend. His agent, Peter Charlesworth said: “He will be a real loss to

the acting profession, sorely missed”. Dunn was born into a showbiz family in London on January 9, 1920, and started his acting career in the 1930s, but when World War Two broke out, he went to serve in the Army. He fought in Greece before being captured and spent four years as a prisoner of war. Dunn’s acting career resumed after the war, and in 1968, the actor landed his trademark role of Jones in the sitcom about life on the home front. Jones, a veteran of the Sudan wars, was notorious for

his often rambling recollections of his time in the Army, as well as for his enthusiasm for the bayonet, which gave rise to his oft repeated cry of “They don’t like it up ‘em!” Dunn called his 1986 autobiography Permission To Speak after another one of his Dad’s Army catchphrases. He went on to star in the TV series Grandad in the late 1970s and 1980s. He is survived by his wife and two daughters. He spent his final years in Portugal where he painted portraits and landscapes until his sight failed.

Best British Banger A competition to find the Best British Banger and a place in the British Sausage Week Hall Of Fame has been held in Newcastle, overseen by “Pub Landlord” Al Murray. The competition, held at Blackfriars restaurant, was won by the Moorhouse Farm Shop in Stannington, Northumberland for its Gunpowder Plot Pork Sausage.

Butchers were invited to submit recipe for their tastiest and most innovative sausages within two categories, Stand Up for British Bangers or Iconic Sausages. The Gunpowder Plot was shortlisted from hundreds of entries in the Iconic category and beat six other regional butchers in the North East heat. Al Murray put the contenders through their paces across the country at the start of British Sausage Week, November 5th. He said: “The standard of entries in the North East was incredibly high, but the Moorhouse Farm Shop’s Gunpowder Plot

Pork Sausage was really quite special. Great sausage, great name and I do like a banger with a bit of a kick – an out and out cracker!” Ian Byatt from Moorhouse Farm Shop said: “We’re really gratified to win, we don’t enter many competitions as we are busy farming. The pork in our bangers is from our own pigs so we know the quality is high. The Gunpowder sausage is popular in the farm shop and we’re thrilled our peppery banger was a hit among the judges too.” British Sausage Week, which has been running for the past 15 years, is a celebration of the taste, quality and diversity of the traditional butchers’ sausage. Organisers claim that sausages are Britain’s single most popular choice for dinner with 864 million meals eaten containing bangers every year. To celebrate British Sausage Week, independent butchers and supermarkets are ran events and special offers, and local pubs and restaurants are offered sausage-themed menus. The British Sausage Appreciation Society is also launching the Stand up for British Bangers Recipe Book.

Bionic Man Climbs Skyscraper Zak Vawter, is the first person ever to get to the top of the world’s tallest skyscraper, the Chicago’s 103-storey Willis Tower, wearing a bionic leg. The 31-year-old completed the task in under an hour, without taking a break.

Mr Vawter, who lost his leg in a motorbike accident, showed off his thought controlled limb for the first time during an annual stair-climbing charity event organised by the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, where he is receiving treatment. So-called Bionic prosthetic arms have been available for some time, thanks to pioneering work at the Rehabilitation Institute. The computerised prosthetic weighs about 10lbs and has two motors which respond to electrical impulses from muscles in

the hamstring. “It’s fantastic hardware. We didn’t have any issues with it at all. It carried him up 103 storeys,” said Levi Hargrove of the institute’s Centre for Bionic Medicine. To prepare for his pioneering climb, Mr Vawter practised at a gym, whilst researchers spent months adjusting the technical aspects of the leg to make sure that it would respond to his thoughts. When Mr Vawter goes home to Yelm, Washington, where he lives with his wife and two children, the leg will stay behind in Chicago. Researchers will continue to refine its technology and say it is still years away from being actually sold. Nearly 3,000 climbers took part in this year’s SkyRise Chicago, climbing 2,100 steps to the Willis Tower’s SkyDeck level, to raise money for the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago institute’s care and research.

Liberty Relit Woolly After Sandy Mammoth Remains Found

America is showing signs of finally recovering from hurricane Sandy. The Statue of Liberty has been illuminated for the first time since it was plunged into darkness by Superstorm Sandy. The iconic statue closed because of damage on Liberty Island resulting from the storm that hit the city on October 29. It has not reopened to the public and the National Park Service, which looks after the icon, has given no estimate of when it will reopen.

She sits on a small island in New York Harbour, and can be seen from many vantage points around New York City. It was re-lit thanks to temporary measures made possible by a donation of equipment and services from Musco Lighting to the National Park Foundation, which is the official charity of America’s national parks. Natoli Construction handled the lighting of the statue’s torch and crown. The temporary lighting will remain in place until permanent

repairs are made. Mike Litterst, a spokesman for the National Park Service, said it was not clear in advance whether Friday night’s lighting would include the torch “so it was a pleasant

surprise to be able to get the torch lit”. The statue’s lamp is held aloft by its raised arm and marks the highest point of the 305-ft-tall (93m) monument, which was dedicated in 1886.

The skeleton of a woolly mammoth, nicknamed Helmut, have been discovered near Paris. It was found by accident during the excavation of an ancient Roman site along the Changissur-Marne riverbank, 30 miles east of the French capital. The remains, which are in

Robot Buddies Research shows that children with autism often find computers and technology safe, motivating and engaging in areas of social interaction and communication. With this in mind, Topcliffe Primary School in Castle Vale, Birmingham, is breaking new ground by helping with the development of robot “buddies”. The use of technology in the classroom is nothing new, but the cute knee-high robots can dance to Michael Jackson’s Thriller, play games and emulate Tai Chi and speak. They have been made by French firm Aldebaran, who are working with education experts from the University of Birmingham to develop interactive learning. The robots are being showcased at the university

as part of the Economic and Social Research Council festival of Social Sciences. Dr Karen Guldberg, from the university’s school of education, said: “We have been looking at how technology can help pupils with autism to communicate. Pupils and teachers are experimenting with the robots and other technologies in a developmental way and they are showing significant benefits for the classroom. The robots have been modelling good behaviour and acting as buddies.” Ian Lowe, head teacher at Topcliffe Primary, said: “The robots have been brilliant at supporting autistic children with their learning. You can programme them to teach language, play games and model behaviour. We have even used them in assemblies. In the future we are looking to see if they can be used to support learning not just at school

but at home as well.” And the pupils at Topcliffe, around 30 with varying degrees of autism, love them. Seven-year-old Joshua says he likes playing memory games

applE and hTC have finally settled their patent battle over smartphone technology, which began in 2010. although specific terms of the deal have not been revealed, apple chief executive Tim Cook said he was glad to reach a settlement. “We will continue to stay laser focused on product innovation.” HTC chief executive Peter Chou said his company was pleased the dispute had been resolved so they could now “focus on innovation instead of litigation.” Apple had launched the lawsuit against the Taiwanese phone-maker in 2010, claiming iPhone technology had been infringed. It was the Californian Company’s first major legal battle against a manufacturer that used Google’s Android operating system. Since Apple first sued HTC, its smartphone patent war has engulfed competitors like Samsung and Google. In August, the iPhone maker won a $1.05 billion verdict against Samsung in a

California court, although it lost a similar case in a Korean court. Apple achieved the most success against HTC when it came to using litigation to disrupt the flow of products into the crucial US market. Late last year, the US International Trade Commission ruled that HTC had infringed upon one of four patents Apple had disputed and imposed a sales ban on some of the Taiwanese maker’s phones. Though HTC said it had devised a technical workaround to Apple’s patents, the company announced in May that shipments of its phones were being held up by US customs officials. Previously thought of as one of the industry’s high flyers, HTC has been badly hit by competition from Apple and Samsung. Last month HTC forecast a 14.5% fall in revenue in the fourth quarter from the third, far worse than analysts had predicted. Experts say the decline in HTC’s turnover could also be to do with the company’s marketing and promotion efforts compared to rivals Samsung and Apple.

Baby Number 2 For Elton

Sir Elton John and David Furnish are expecting a sibling for their son Zachary who will be two on Christmas Day. The singer, 65, his husband Furnish, 50, who became civil partners in 2005, have made no secret of wanting another child. The Sun newspaper reported that another baby is due next year, using the same surrogate who gave birth to Zachary.

A source close to the pair told newspaper: “Elton and David love this lady like a sister and they feel indebted to her for life. Naturally she has been well rewarded. But her identity will never be revealed.” She is believed to have been recruited via the Centre For Surrogate Parenting in Encino, California. She is already “several months” pregnant. Staff working for the couple have been sworn to secrecy but it is understood that an extra nanny is being sought to live at the mansion in Old Windsor, Berkshire. In the summer, Sir Elton revealed he would like to have another child so that Zachary has someone to play with. “I’d love to have more chil-

dren. I want to have a brother or a sister to go to school with him so that he can have someone to play with.” In an interview for NBC’s Today show, he talked about the challenges Zachary may face. “It’s going to be heart breaking for him to grow up and realise he hasn’t got a mummy. But he’s so happy. I’ve never seen a more contented child. And you have never seen two more contented people as David and I.” Sir Elton is currently in Australia for a sell-out tour. It was arranged after George Michael pulled out of his dates as he continues his recovery following a lifethreatening bout of pneumonia a year ago.

Kenneth Branagh, the Oscar-nominated actor, director and screenwriter, known for his Shakespeare works and more recently as Swedish detective Wallander on the BBC, was knighted in the Queen’s birthday honours in June and has received his honour from the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

A man who used his ex-girlfriend’s pregnancy test for a joke was diagnosed with testicular cancer after his positive result was posted online. The man’s friend had sent a comic drawing to the Reddit website showing how surprised he was at finding he was an expectant male. But an alert reader suggested there might be another, far more serious reason for the positive reading. “You may have testicular cancer. Get to an oncologist, tell them you took a pregnancy test and it came out positive.” The joker took the advice and went to his

doctor, who discovered a small tumour on one of his testicles. His friend has since posted an update on what happened. He said: “To be honest with everyone, I assumed it was nothing, considering a pregnancy test finding cancer seemed a bit odd. But I guess there is a hormone the test picks up that the tumour produces, and that is why the test said he was pregnant.” The friend added: “So both of us want to say, ‘Thank you.’ And, in all seriousness, if you are male, check yourself for testicular cancer regularly. If you’re a girl, test yourself for breast cancer regularly.” The connection with the pregnancy test and the finding of testicular cancer is that some testicular cancers produce the same hormone - beta hCG - that is tested for in pregnancy kits.

The Belfast-born 51-year-old was made a knight bachelor for services to drama and the community of Northern Ireland. He alongside Sir Alec Guinness, Sir Michael Caine, Sir Patrick Stewart, Sir Ben Kingsley and Sir Laurence Olivier has become a thespian knight. Sir Kenneth featured in the Olympics Opening Ceremony this year and who directed the recent Hollywood blockbuster Thor, said he felt “humble, elated and incredibly lucky” at the award. “When I was a kid I dreamed of pulling on a shirt for the Northern Ireland football team,” he said. “I could only imagine how proud you might feel. was saddened recently to hear of the death, in Tenerife, of a television legend. Bill Tarmey played the part of Jack Duckworth in granada television’s “Coronation Street” from 1979 until 2010. Bill, whose real name was William piddington first appeared on the soap in 1978 in a s m a l l

part as Jack Rowe before he re-appeared as Jack Duckworth a year later. Once Stan Ogden had been written out of the script, the door of the rovers was open for a new lovable rogue, a part which Bill filled beautifully. His part grew and he and Liz Dawn were the comedy couple of the street. Nothing

ever went their way but they plodded through life taking each disaster that life threw at them in their stride. Many people forget that Bill was an accomplished singer with various albums and singles to his name. This was quite an achievement considering that the character that he portrayed on Corrie couldn’t sing a note in tune. Many years ago, I worked with Bill Tarmey in Wales on a beauty competition. I had brought him in to be one of judges for the annual contest and I found him to be extremely pleasant and very patient with the audience, signing autographs and joking around with them as they had their photographs taken with him. Whilst I was compering on stage, he used his stage expertise to heckle me without taking anything away from my performance. If anything, he fed me some fabulous one liner’s which enabled me to fire gags back at him. Many years later, he called me on New Year’s

Eve to wish me a happy new year. He talked to me about my grandfather, who had been in Coronation Street playing the part of Stan Ogden long before he came along on the scene. My friends Bill and Bridget from the Golf del Sur in Tenerife were good friends of his and met up with him regularly when he came over to the island. Bridget told me “He was such a kind man, not affected by his fame”. She recalled when she had the Zodiac bar on the golf. “He came into my bar and spent the evening with a few Bacardi’s and a chat and a laugh and when he left he said how nice it was to be around real friendly people”. Coronation Street goes on and on, but in my opinion, the great characters are slowly going by

the wayside. There doesn’t seem to be anyone to replace these wonderful character actors. Many of his co-actors have given tributes to Bill. Nigel Pivaro, who played Terry Duckworth said, “If Bill Tarmey ever told a lie it was when he used to tell me he was not an actor, he was just the fool who delivered Jack’s lines the best way he could. In fact, he was a very clever actor, who drew on all his years and knowledge to breathe life into the character of Jack Duckworth”. Liz Dawn, who played his long suffering wife paid tribute to the man she worked with for so many happy years, “I am totally bereft. He will always be remembered by everyone he came into contact with because he was such a kind

and generous man. “You couldn’t wish to meet a more lovely man and a true gentleman. He was a gentle giant and I will miss him so much. Bill was part of my family.” Julie Goodyear, who played Bet Lynch, paid tribute to the man and his work. “His comedy timing, his screen ¬presence, his talent were clear to all, but he was even more marvellous away from the cameras. Bill was caring, compassionate, everything you could wish for in a person and probably one of the most popular men in show business. It was a privilege to have known him.” Bill passed away at his holiday home in South Tenerife on 9th November.

JaGGeR Love LetteRs FoR saLe

a SERiES of “passionate and articulate” letters sent by Mick Jagger to his secret lover, Marsha hunt during the summer of 1969 are to go to auction. The letters are said to paint a picture of Jagger as a “poetic and self-aware” 25-year-old, and were written to american-born singer Marsha while the Rolling Stones singer was in australia.

Marsha, who is said to have provided the inspiration for the Stones’ 1971 hit Brown Sugar, gave Sotheby’s the commission to sell 10 letters, due to go under the hammer in London on December 12. Early predictions are that the letters will reach between £70,000 and £100,000. The collection, which also includes song lyrics and a Rolling Stones playlist, are due to be the centrepiece of an English literature and history sale. Gabriel Heaton, Sotheby’s books specialist, said: “These beautifully-written and lyrical letters from the heart of the cultural and social revolution of 1969 frame a vivid moment in cultural history.

Here we see Mick Jagger not as the global superstar he has become, but as a poetic and self-aware 25-year-old with wide-ranging intellectual and artistic interests.” Written whilst Jagger was on a film set in the Australian Outback after the Rolling Stones’ landmark Hyde Park concert, the documents reveal an insight into the cultural events of the time, including the first moon landing. Dr Heaton added: “They provide a rare glimpse of Jagger that is very different from his public persona: passionate but self-contained, lyrical but with a strong sense of irony.” The letters were written by Jagger for his lover while he was filming Ned Kelly, whilst he was also heavily, but secretly involved with Marianne Faithfull. In a statement released by Sotheby’s, Marsha Hunt said of the well-preserved letters: “They’re addressed to me. I was 23, Americanborn, Berkeley-educated and London-based. Despite his high profile and my own, our delicate love affair remains as much part of his secret history as his concerns over the death of Brian Jones and the suicide attempt of his girl-

friend, Marianne Faithfull.” In an interview with The Guardian, Hunt, the mother of Jagger’s first child, said she needed to raise funds to repair her house in France. Now aged 66, the singer told the newspaper she hoped the buyer would recognise that they have a piece of history. “The letters speak for Mick at an incredible juncture of our lives,” she said. “Someone, I hope, will buy those letters as our generation is dying and with us will go the reality of who we were and what life was.”

The World’s Poorest President

We have all seen and heard about the ridiculous expenditure involved in becoming a country’s president. Their lifestyles are far removed from those of their electorate. It is an altogether different story in Uruguay. Here the president lives on a rundown farm and gives away almost all of his salary. Washing is hung outside his house. The water comes from a well in a yard, and only two police officers and Manuela, his three-legged dog, keep guard. This is the residence of the president of Uruguay, Jose Mujica.

President Mujica has shunned the luxurious house that the Uruguayan state provides for its leaders and chose to stay at his wife’s farmhouse, outside the capital, Montevideo. The president and his wife even work the land themselves, growing flowers. This austere lifestyle, so different from other world leaders plus the fact that Mujica donates about 90% of his monthly salary, equivalent to £750, to charity, has led him to be christened the poorest president in the world. “I’ve lived like this most of my life,” he says, sitting on an old chair in his garden, on Manuela’s favourite cushion. “I can live well with what I have.” His charitable donations, which go to the poor and small entrepreneurs, mean his salary is roughly in line with the average Uruguayan income of £485 a month. In 2010, his annual personal wealth declaration - obligatory for officials in Uruguay – was £1,100, the value of his 1987 Volkswagen Beetle. This year, he added half of his wife’s assets - land, tractors and a house - reaching £135,000. Elected in 2009, Mujica spent the 1960s and 1970s as part of the Uruguayan guerrilla Tupamaros, a leftist armed group inspired by the Cuban revolution. He was shot six times and spent 14 years in prison. Most of his detention was spent in harsh conditions and isolation, he was freed in 1985 when Uruguay returned to democracy. The years in prison, Mujica says, helped shape his outlook on life. “I’m called ‘the poorest president’, but I don’t feel poor. Poor people are those who only work to try to keep an expensive lifestyle, and always want more and more,” he says. “This is a matter of

freedom. If you don’t have many possessions then you don’t need to work all your life like a slave to sustain them, and therefore you have more time for yourself,” he says. I may appear to be an eccentric old man... But this is a free choice.” The Uruguayan leader made a similar point when he addressed the Rio+20 summit in June this year: “We’ve been talking all afternoon about sustainable development; to get the masses out of poverty. But what are we thinking? Do we want the model of development and consumption of the rich countries? I ask you now: what would happen to this planet if Indians would have the same proportion of cars per household than Germans? How much oxygen would we have left? Does this planet have enough resources so seven or eight billion can have the same level of consumption and waste that today is seen in rich soci-

eties? It is this level of hyperconsumption that is harming our planet.” Mujica accuses most world leaders of having a “blind obsession to achieve growth with consumption, as if the contrary would mean the end of the world”. But whatever the gulf between Mujica and other world leaders, he is no more immune than they are to the ups and downs of political life. “Many sympathise with President Mujica because of how he lives. But this does not stop him for being criticised for how the government is doing,” says Ignacio Zuasnabar, a Uruguayan pollster. The Uruguayan opposition says the country’s recent economic prosperity has not resulted in better public services in health and education, and for the first time since Mujica’s election in 2009 his popularity has fallen below 50%. This year he has also

been criticised because of two controversial moves. Uruguay’s Congress recently passed a bill which legalised abortions for pregnancies up to 12 weeks. Unlike his predecessor, Mujica did not veto it. He is also supporting a debate on the legalisation of the consumption of can-

nabis, in a bill that would also give the state the monopoly over its trade. “Consumption of cannabis is not the most worrying thing, drug-dealing is the real problem,” he says. However, he doesn’t have to worry too much about his popularity rating - Uruguayan law means he is not allowed

to seek re-election in 2014. Also, at 77, he is likely to retire from politics altogether before long. When he does, he will be eligible for a state pension - and unlike some other former presidents, he may not find the drop in income too hard to get used to.

‘how can i make it equal?’ ‘i can’t help but feel angry with her’

I didn’t work while my kids were young and I was happy to do all the housework while my husband was at work. Unfortunately he’s been made redundant and I’ve taken on a full time job at a supermarket. He’s still expecting me to do everything around the house even though he sits around moping all day and I’m rushed off my feet. How can I ask him to help without making him feel like a house wife? Cass The simple fact is that you shouldn’t have to ask the old man to help out. Its got to be pretty obvious to him that you can’t cope with everything on your own. I’m sorry, I think you’re being far too soft on him. Tell him point blank that he needs to chip in and start doing some of the things that you’ve done for the family over the years.

Sure, he may be crestfallen and feeling sorry for himself but wallowing about in self pity all day long, being waited on hand and foot isn’t going to help him at all! In the current economic climate jobs are thin on the ground but he really should be out there looking for one regardless of that. Forget all your preconceived ideas and have the conversation with him Cass. The guy needs a reality check and you’re the one that’s perfectly placed to give him that.

I have a work colleague who I’ve become good friends with over the years. She’s the sweetest girl I’ve ever known and always listens to my problems and gives me good advice. I’ve been going through some tough times at home recently and she’s been understanding as ever. I can’t help but start to feel a bit resentful though. She has a perfect life. Is she just so interested in mine to feel smug about her own? Bella

done her best to offer you her friendship and support. Why oh why are you trying to undermine that? Whatever you do here, you’ve got to stop looking at other people lives with such envy, it simply isn’t healthy is it? The world is full of all sorts of people, your colleague sounds like one of the good ones. If you let these feelings build up and come between you, you’ll not only be doing her a huge disservice, you’ll also risk losing a good friend. Can you afford that? I very much doubt it. Work hard on changing how you feel and spend more time dealing with your own problems end of story!

‘am i too sensitive?’ ‘is fiancé pulling out?’

I find myself getting upset at the smallest little things and my friends are always teasing me because of it. I told my mum and she said that I’m just too sensitive. If my friends talk about something I don’t know about I feel close to tears. What’s wrong with me? Jade

It’s nigh on impossible for me to say without meeting you Jade and even then, I’m no psychotherapist! There could be a hundred and one reasons for

why you feel this way. Like your mum says, you may well be a very sensitive person but I don’t think that explains away the tears to be honest. Your best bet is to speak to your GP and take it from there. You may find that therapy can help you to unlock whatever it is that makes you feel this way and not only understand it but also overcome it. Of course, if you just accept things the way they are, I very much doubt anything will change so it’s important that you do actually do something to help yourself.

My fiancé is really worrying me at the moment. We’ve been engaged for 18 months and still haven’t set a date. He’s been off with me for a while now and the other day told me that he was feeling depressed and wasn’t sure about what he wanted from life. He’s asked me to give him 6 months to think but I want an answer now. If he wants me I want to marry him, but if he doesn’t I want to get on with my life. Jasmine You seem to have answered your own question Jasmine, why are you asking me? I can’t change the fact that your fiancé needs more time and I certainly can’t change the fact that you’ve had enough of waiting.

For whatever reason, the guy isn’t ready to go ahead and marry you. He’s had the gumption to be upfront about that hasn’t he? What you need to do now is decide whether or not to sit and wait for him. As ever, communication is the key so it’s essential that you sit down and thrash this out until you either reach a compromise or you agree to go your own separate ways. I know its difficult sweetheart but there’s no way on earth you can or should force this guys hand if he isn’t ready. Talk things through rather than sitting there fuming and hoping for a result that suits you. Relationships should be give and take, not one sided. Good luck!

Sweet, Smokey pulled pork

10 Food Facts!

During the Alaskan Klondike gold rush, (1897-1898) potatoes were practically worth their weight in gold. Potatoes were so valued for their vitamin C content that miners traded gold for potatoes.

pork is probably one of the cheapest meats on the market at the moment. There are so many different things you can do with pork, but this easy and cheap recipe that can feed up to eight people (depending on the size of joint) can be served with literally anything! Even pita breads, or can go on top of that pizza base that has been in the freezer for a while. i recommend using a cheaper cut of pork on the bone as it pulls better and has a richer taste but whatever you use the results are generally the same!

Ingredients

1 large joint of pork For the marinade 2 tbsp honey 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tsp smoked paprika 2 tbsp olive oil 1 whole bulb of garlic, crushed by hand Plenty of fresh thyme Plenty of fresh rosemary 2 big pinches of salt 1 big pinch of pepper 1 bottle of Ale Put the pork into an oven tray. Start

by scoring the pork along the skin as if making crackling. Mix all the marinade ingredients together in a bowl then cover the pork in the marinade. Rub the sauce and the garlic into the scored slits in the meat and leave them to marinate overnight. The next day preheat the oven to 240°C/gas mark 9. Put the pork into the oven for 20 minutes or until it gets a great colour. After 20 minutes take the meat out, cover it in tin foil and put it back into the oven at a cooler 140°C/gas mark 1 for 8 hours to slow roast. Eight hours later it should pull, shred and be lovely and tender. Drizzle some of the marinade sauce over the top and serve with coleslaw and oven roasted Jacket Potatoes

Tips/Hints

Why not turn the left over’s into a salad, casserole or even a pie? Use the juices to make rich strong gravy A few teaspoons of Smokey BBQ sauce to the marinade give it that little extra Smokey flavour!

Here I am again, refreshed from my UK break. I was amazed at how cheap the shops are in the UK compared to here. I bought loads of different cheeses and went potty in the pound shops of Blackpool and Preston. I went back to England with just 4 kilos in my bag and came back to Tenerife with 30 kilos. Now that’s what I call a shopping trip. One thing that I always find annoying in the shops back in Blighty is the way that staff are

now trained to try and sell you something extra that you don’t want. I bought a video camera and was asked at the till if I wanted a spare battery for it. When I said no, the till girl asked me if I wanted insurance for it, I said no, I didn’t. As she took my money, she asked me if I had a loyalty card and I said no I didn’t. She then asked me if I would like one, by which time I lost my rag and said I just wanted the camera. She told me that she was just doing her job. Since when did shops in the UK make harassing a customer part of its staff job descriptions! Grrrr!

Down In The Dungeon

Whilst in Blackpool I visited the Blackpool Tower Dungeons which are situated under the tower itself. My friends and I laughed nervously as a lift door opened and a grizzly looking character lurked in the corner.

We stayed, glued to the spot when it jumped up and stared at us all one by one as it moved amongst us. Nervous laughter filled the air and eventually, we were ushered into the lift. I found the whole experience both interesting and funny whilst still having some nervy moments. I would recommend the experience to anybody, as long as they didn’t have small children. The final part of the dungeon tour was

a small drop ride. My two friends and I got onto the ride and one of the staff, dressed as a witch, pulled the safety bar down. It wouldn’t click into place and they had to try at least half a dozen times before they finally gave in. The witch came walking over to my friend Tracy and said, “Sorry madam, but the bar won’t go down and we will have to ask you to get off the ride”. Poor Tracy was just a little oversized for the bar and we howled with laughter (well we are wicked) as she trundled off in front of all and sundry. She got her revenge though. When the ride dropped us from a great height, a hidden camera took our photographs and I looked a pretty picture. I made her promise not to put it on facebook, but I will share it with you!

Daylight, Polite Robbery Many people who live in Tenerife will know the name Paul James. He was agent to many of the top cabaret acts that perform here on the island in bars and hotels. He was the man that

hundreds, possibly thousands turned to over the years when they needed their paperwork to become legal for work. Bitter and Twisted worked with him and Paul became a good friend over the years. No-one understood the Spanish system

the way that Paul did. He had a good little business and he was a self-made man. Paul passed away last week and I shall miss my friend very much. For me, Tenerife will be a slightly quieter and less exciting place without him.

Now here’s a story! During my visit to Blackpool, my friend, Tracy, was minding her own business, standing outside the hotel having a cigarette. A young man came up to her and said that he was waiting for a girl called Susan as she was going to buy some Richmond cigarettes from him on the cheap. These were just the cigarettes that Tracy smokes, so when she didn’t turn up, he asked her if she would like to buy them. 200 fags for 30 quid was his price. She jumped at the offer, but said that

she only had two 20 notes. He said he could change it in the shop down the road. “I won’t run off with your money” he said. He came back a few minutes later and politely said that they wouldn’t change it but she could have 400 for 40 quid. What a nice feller, thought Tracy as she handed over the money and he passed her the carrier back. Away he went and Tracy finished her cigarette and took the bag up to her room, only to find that there were two pieces of rolled up corrugated cardboard in the bag and not a cigarette in sight! You can’t even trust them when they are polite these days!

JaJa For everyone on the mainland i also do the Sunday Siesta from 1 through till 6 on the whole network. its early days but i have seen the plans for the station and the sound it is to deliver so i´m really excited! (i get to press more buttons) it’s a privilege to be part of a small dedicated team of professionals that share the passion of communication. WhERE aRE YOU FROM? Birmingham, the back flanks of Kings Heath and PROUD. Next! WhEn anD WhY DiD YOU MOVE TO TEnERiFE? I moved here nearly 8 years ago, and it was because I fell in love with the islands when I went to Lanzarote 11 years ago. It took about three years to make the jump but I’m so glad that I did. One of my best friends from the UK was already living here with his family so I knew I had support, and since moving I’ve made many more friends. WhEn’S YOUR BiRThDaY? TOdaY!!! 16th November … So by the time you are reading this I will have gotten up at the crack of dawn, and if it’s before midday then you can listen to me on Spectrum FM 105.3, or if it’s after midday then I will have already peaked popped to Bar Medano for a coffee and be on my way to the cinema to watch the last in the series of Breaking Dawn. (PS the editor did not know it was my birthday otherwise I would have free tickets and a VIP table to Bitter and Twisted!)

I think that the most fun I have had, whilst being so wrong I was

asked to cover the PA, public announcements, at St Andrews… Typical me I said OK. So I went home, had lots of coffee and headed off to the football ground on my moped. Not knowing that, as I got to the commentary box, Jasper Carrot would be sat to my left, an on/off switch in front of me, two statisticians on my right and 18,000 people in front of me – hey, no problem. To this day I cannot bring myself to look it up, but just as the coffee was wearing off, one passed to the other and then it got all exciting and then people were screaming names at me, and so I flipped the on switch and then said “GOOOOOOOAL!!! AND the goal scorer is RICKII-I-I DONOWA-A-A-A!” 18,000 people stopped, turned to the commentary box… the statistician were going mad Jasper Carrot was crying with laughter – but 18.000 people in unison and said… “WHO?” Can you imagine the shame? So being a professional I opened the PA and corrected myself. Ahem next question. WhaT iS YOUR TipplE? Coffee is my poison but what’s

a little over 2 weeks ago whilst doing some proof reading for the Tenerife Weekly, i came across a story that sent me back to the shy 10 year old i used to be.....there’s a new Star Wars film on the way!!!!

Growing up, those films set in a galaxy far, far away made a huge impression on me from the age of 7- and anyone who knows me can confirm that the mere sound of the iconic music can still wake up the kid, for whom every present was Star Wars, every game of make believe, every daydream at school.. Well you get the idea, so the news that Disney has bought Lucasfilm and episode 7 is already in preproduction for release in 2015, well, excited is not the word!!! So on behalf of all of you who grew up wanting to be a Jedi, here’s the latest news and speculation. The most likely storyline would see the film set decades after “Return of the Jedi” and

include the rise of the New Republic and Jedi Academy. Harrison Ford has expressed an interest in playing a much older (obviously) Han Solowhich would work with the storyline mentioned and would also see Luke and Leia etc. return. Ford apparently has stipulated one condition- that Solo dies, as was originally planned for the end of episode 6. The new film would likely be the start of a new trilogy and see a “handing of the reins” to a new, younger cast of characters. Directors already mentioned include Matthew Vaughn (X-men First Class), Jon Favreau (Iron Man), Joss Whedon (Avengers) and JJ Abrams (Star Trek). If anyone has a “wish list” for the new Star Wars, feel free to contact me-I’d love to hear about them!! May the force be with you!! P.S. 899 days would be May 4th, 2015. Gotta be the release date!!

Sleep Well Bill Tarmey

last Thursday, 8th november, was a sad day for Corrie fans as it was announced that Bill Tarmey, the actor who played iconic character Jack Duckworth, had passed away, here in Tenerife. The actor, who played long suffering husband Jack to nagging Wife Vera, played by Elizabeth Dawn, almost continuously from 1979 until the characters death in 2010, was one of the streets most popular characters. I can remember a story from a few years back, my “Wildboyz” partner in crime Mea Deen and one of our best friends Davy Fothergill were thrilled to be sat next to the soap legend in one of our favourite restaurants “La Cava”. Several glasses of red wine later, Mea bombarded him with requests to shout his catchphrase-”flaming Nora!!” much to Bill’s obvious embarrassment!! He was apparently wearing his trademark glasses complete with Elastoplast although this was never proved!! The actor was 71 and passed away in his villa in Torviscas. You will be sorely missed Bill.

Balduino grabbed the glory for CD Marino with both goals in a 2-0 home win over Rayo Vallecano B but the whole team raised their game with a spirited and defiant performance. Top 10 Rayo started well forcing a full reach tip over from Matias but Marino grew in confidence and built well with Sandro and Javi testing them down the flanks. After just 11 minutes Pablo broke from deep and fed the ball to Balduino who danced round his defender to slip the ball in the net. Rayo hit back pinning Marino down and forcing four corners but Rayco and Acai stood out among some stout defending – so often the team’s weak spot. Aaron was flattened in the penalty but Marino didn’t get the call, another attack on the stroke of half time and Sandro found the big man Balduino to double his tally for the game and season.
