I have lived in Tenerife for over ten years now, I have a house which from time to time needs attention from plumbers, electricians etc. Like many of you, I have been the victim of “rogue traders” who promise the world, but do not deliver. Unfortunately, as is usually the case, if it seems too good to be true, it often is. Well I have had enough. Things are tough for sole traders and small businesses alike, they pay all of their dues, rely on word of mouth, and cannot afford to advertise their business as they constantly have to quote against other

We all know professional people who are struggling at the moment, but are honest, reliable and give good service, why not give them a boost and tell us about them? Vivo Group companies Tenerife Weekly, in conjunction with Tenebay, are doing what we can to help. We have launched a brand new classified section into both businesses. It is cheap and it is aimed at the professional who is finding it tough to get new business. For just 10,00 Euros per week,

The long awaited ceasefire between Israel and Hamas held for just a few hours. Twelve rockets were fired into Israel after the ceasefire was brokered. An Israeli Police spokesman said the attacks caused no injuries or damage, with the rockets mostly landing in open fields in the south of the Jewish state.
The truce brokered between the two sides came into effect on Wednesday evening, bringing an end to eight days of bloody fighting. Both sides quickly claimed victory, with Hamas insisting it had defeated Israel. The Israelis, however, said they have severely impaired the military capability of Hamas, which governs Gaza. The ceasefire deal called on Israel to “stop all hostilities... in the land, sea and air including incursions and targeting of
individuals” and urged Palestinian factions to end “rocket attacks and all attacks along the border”. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said he was prepared to give peace a chance. “Netanyahu spoke with President Barack Obama and agreed to his recommendation to give a chance to an Egyptian proposal for a ceasefire and thereby give an opportunity for the stabilisation of the situation and a calming of it,” said a statement.

you can advertise your business in the paper as well as online on the Tenebay website. Advertising is often the only way that people can find what they need, but often the price is prohibitive. Well not any more. If you have a business, be it as a builder, painter, electrician, you can at last afford to advertise. Please send your advert to design@tenerife-weekly.com You will need to pay by direct debit, or visit our office in Las Americas, prior to publication.
See you all next week,
Lorna Eade The ceasefire comes far too late for some. Police are still investigating a bus bombing in the Israeli city of Tel Aviv that left at least 21 people wounded. The explosion took place near the military headquarters just hours before the ceasefire was announced and threatened to derail negotiations. US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton said it was a “critical moment” for the region. Gaza City’s streets were dark and deserted in the minutes after the truce took effect at 7pm UK time. Soon afterwards people poured out of their homes to hail the “victory” as the ceasefire appeared to hold. Celebratory gunfire could be heard throughout the Gaza Strip and fireworks were released into the sky, where Israeli drones still buzzed overhead. “The resistance has triumphed,” some shouted. After urging the two sides to uphold the accord, the 15-member UN Security Council also called in a statement for an international effort to get “emergency aid” into Gaza. There had to be “expeditious and unimpeded delivery of such humanitarian assistance, including of food, fuel and medical treatment,” said the statement. During the conflict air strikes became an everyday experience for Gazans. The trapped population endured raids against over 1,000 targets across the coastal area. One house was hit and the death toll increased up too around 60 while 300 have been wounded. The majority, medical officials say, are civilians. Gazans don’t know where they can be safe. Hamas or other militants use rocket launching sites that are tucked into residential neighbourhoods to fire at Israel. And Gaza is so densely populated it’s difficult to see how the militants could find anywhere to use their weapons that did not endanger civilians. Equally, however hard Israel tries to avoid hitting the innocent, it did. The only advice Israel’s military gave to Gazans is to try to stay away from Hamas installations
and personnel. Hamas is the government here. It runs the schools and other ministries. Its security officers are on every street corner and its guerrilla fighter’s experts at concealment. Nowhere is safe. Not even for the foreign media covering the situation. Israel has denied targeting foreign media in airstrikes in Gaza, saying it was aiming for Hamas communication sites. The Israeli Defence Forces released video footage of one of the media buildings, occupied by international broadcasters, being hit. No one was injured in the attack. Five hours earlier, another media building in Gaza, housing Hamas’ al Aqsa television among others was also hit in an Israeli airstrike. Six journalists were injured in that strike, including an employee of al Quds television station who lost his leg. The Israeli military said in a statement it had “targeted two Hamas operational communication sites that were identified by precise intelligence”. Israeli military spokeswoman Avital Leibovich said a Hamas antenna was the target of the strike. “The media building was taken by Hamas to be used as human shields - we see this time after time, year after year,” she said. “Hamas chose, out of all the buildings in the Gaza Strip, to choose this
building - the media, civilian building - to place its electronic infrastructure and communications on the rooftop. The target was on the roof and only that target was hit.” She added: “The entire building stayed safe. The entire floors stayed safe. Maybe there were some broken windows as a result of the explosion but no more than that. The target was the Hamas facility.” But she said: “I say this to any civilian in Gaza: stay away from Hamas sites. This is my recommendation to the journalists as well as others.” However, it isn’t easy for the 1.7 million Gazans to know what is considered a target by Israel and what is not. Hamas don’t put a flag on each of their firing positions. They are extremely well camouflaged. Large numbers of them are indeed hidden in built-up areas and on waste ground. There are known Hamas areas, but there are a lot of unknown areas and there are lots more subtle things, like radio transmission areas. The Foreign Press Association issued a statement saying it was “concerned” by the attacks, adding that both buildings house had been used by members of the association. The statement pointed to a 2006 UN Security Council resolution condemning attacks on journalists in conflict zones.

The government has banned cash payments of over 2,500 Euros. This measure came into force on Monday of this week and applies to any operation in which an autonomo, professional or business is involved. The new rules were published in the BOE on 30 October, and the Agencia Tributaria (AEAT) expects that it will limit cases of fiscal fraud. AEAT says that over the past five years some 1.5 billion Euros has been “regularized” from inspections which have detected cash transactions. Sanctions for those breaking the new regulations will involve fines of 25% of the amount of the illegal operation with both parties to the transaction being held responsible. Moreover, sanctions can accumulate, so that if an autonomo is regularly paid in cash, he can be fined not only for the cash taken, but also for unpaid VAT and taxes. Guardia Civil officers have arrested two youths of 18 and 19 who carried out an armed street robbery in Las Galletas. Getting out of a car in which there were another four occupants, one youth threatened a passer-by with a gun and demanded money. He got away with just 25 Euros. After calling the police, a patrol car managed to pick up two of the five; the other three managed to get away and are still being sought. . The university of La Laguna collected 2,000 kilos of food in their first solidarity campaign. The campaign encourages students, teachers and admin staff to participate in voluntary work. The British embassy has announced that Steve Jones, the Consul in Malaga, is to extend his role to cover the whole of southern Spain and take over responsibility for the Canary Islands. In addition an extra casework officer is to be recruited locally for the Consulate in Tenerife, raising from eight to nine – including the Honorary Consul in Lanzarote - the total number of customerfacing staff who directly assists British nationals in the Canaries. The moves are part of a continuing modernisation and investment that will deliver a total of eight extra frontline staff across Spain. The Consulates – including the Canaries - will have more
caseworkers providing faceto-face assistance, whilst Consuls focus on strategic issues such as new ways of preventing and tackling the most common and complex problems that face Brits abroad – from lost passports to serious criminal matters. The Spain network is adopting the same model that the Foreign Office already uses in many parts of the world, where Consuls often oversee more than one post. Dave Thomas, Consular Regional Director for southern Europe, said: “It’s vital that we use our resources to the best possible effect. We are putting more caseworkers on the ground. They are the ones who actually provide the face-to-face assistance that British nationals need. We are freeing up the Consuls to focus on consular policy, driving up standards of delivery and
customer service, and overall management of our consular teams”. Steve Jones succeeds Maria Leng, who has led the team in the islands for the past two years and contributed extensively to the modernisation of British consular services there. He brings a wealth of experience in assisting British nationals and in representing the United Kingdom in Spain. He has led the busy consular team in Malaga for three years, where he also oversees the Foreign Office’s consular contact centre for southern Europe. Last year he collected the Foreign Secretary’s Award for Service Delivery. He served as Consul in the Canaries between 2007 and 2009. He previously worked in the travel industry in the Canaries, as Overseas Manager for Thomas Cook based in Fuerteventura.
Steve Jones said: “I am looking forward to my return to the Canaries. We have important posts with experienced and dedicated teams – and an excellent Honorary Consul in Lanzarote - that do an impressive job. They have first class contacts with the Canarian authorities and British community organisations across the islands. “I want to maintain the delivery of high-quality assistance that British national’s value, and to work closely with our valued partners who I look forward to meeting again. It is a privilege to take over from Maria and join such a dedicated and hard working group of people.” The Canaries are among the most popular destinations worldwide for British nationals, with some 85,000 residents on the islands and 3.5 million visitors every year.

North Airport Emergency Drill
Tenerife Norte Airport has conducted an emergency drill in order to evaluate the procedures set forth in its Plan of Self-Protection and to test the response capacity and coordination between all those groups responsible and participants involved. The exercise simulated a fire that began in a baggage claim hall toilet which required the intervention of internal resources to put it out, as well as the partial evacuation of the building and the care of “victims”. The emergency began with an announcement of
the fire, issued by national police agents stationed in the border control area. This call was immediately investigated by support staff who then made an assessment of the situation. Following the pre-set Protocol, passengers were evacuated from the affected area and the alarm tripped at the Centre of Coordination of Operations, while the minor injuries were cared for by the medical service at the airport. The drill included the establishment of a main control position which coordinated the assistance and control of evacuated passengers and issued an emergency notice to all airport personnel. The fire fighters then proceeded to extinguish the “fire”. The drill was deemed to have been successful.
Carnaval 2013 Voting Walk For Life System Changes
It’s now an annual event that guarantees a good turnout, and since it’s in aid of the fight against breast cancer, it’s for one of the very best of causes. The 2012 Walk for Life is on Sunday 16 December at 11.00 am, just less than 5 km starting from the Magma Centre and ending at the Plaza la Pescadora on the front in Los Cristianos. There’s more information on the carreraporlavida website: http://www.carreraporlavida.com/cuando.aspx
Designers have forced the organisers of next year’s Carnival Queen Election to change the system of voting as they considered that the current system was not “clean” enough. At the next Gala, the jury will have to issue their scores live and voice their vote through the microphone. The director of this show, Juan Carlos Armas, said that it will now take on a “Eurovision style” and each single jury member may vote for their five favourites, marking them between seven and 12 points. The previous voting system allowed the jury to vote anonymously and on a paper, which allowed doubts to be sown. They believe that sometimes there have been strange scores, for example that a candidate that has received numerous 10 points and other high scores suddenly receives a 0 from someone. It can also happen in the opposite direction: a candidate that received consistently low scores suddenly gets an extraordinary 10 points. For this reason, the designers have demanded the City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife that the votes in the Gala of 2013 are made publicly. This was the case in
the 2005 Carnival with Jaime Azpilicueta, in which the award went to the current director of the Gala. “This change has occurred by the proposals of the designers, who indicated that this way, the contest will be cleaner and clearer”, says Juan Carlos Armas. Also, the designers are happier with the members of the jury and how they are chosen, “nobody is somebody’s friend”. The only negative aspect to this voting system is that it removes emotion to the election of the Queen, although efforts will be
made to ensure that this will not happen. The director of the Gala has already is preparing one of the most anticipated shows of the Carnival, this year will be inspired by India and the theme of Bollywood. There will be a grand musical involving more than 600 people, the organisers are also in negotiations with “two big stars”, one international and also a Canarian who has triumphed outside of the islands. Rumours are that one of the names will be singer, songwriter Pedro Guerra.

Cocaine gang arrested
The Guardia Civil have arrested 14 people, nine Spanish and five Colombians as suspected members of a network of drug trafficking that brought cocaine into the Canary Islands hidden in a famous brand detergent packages. operation drip, working in Tenerife, Madrid and Valladolid, intervened 20 kilos of cocaine after 14 house searches, of which eight were in Madrid and six in Tenerife. records show that officers seized 105,000 euros in cash and 30 vehicles, as well as property and financial products worth over three million euros. In the town of Valdetorres de Jarama (Madrid), agents found a laboratory with high amounts of chemical products used
to adulterate the drug, as well as presses, weighing scales and other utensils. The investigation began in May of this year, when agents detected that a resident in Tenerife periodically received from Madrid cocaine hidden in packets of detergent that came to the island in containers. The ringleader of the Organization moved to Madrid to buy a large number of containers of detergent, which was later moved to a mechanical workshop in the neighbourhood of Vallecas, owned by another Member of the group. After manipulating the containers, filling them with drugs and resealing them. An employee of a Tenerife Customs Agency processed the corresponding documentation to allow the transfer of the detergent to the island and reported the arrival at the port of the goods. Persons supplying cocaine to the organization periodically moved to the Islands in order to receive
substantial amounts of cash from the sale of the narcotic drugs. They then flew back to Madrid, in case of being intercepted at the airport checkpoints,
they used false accreditation of “judicial experts. They also the names of several companies legally established in Madrid, but had false self-employed
documents enabling them to produce false invoices for services to launder money obtained from the sale of drugs. These false self-employed members of
the group opened bank accounts in names that were actually used by the drug trafficking organization to introduce the legal money obtained illegally.

Arona Mayor Resigns Arona mayor José Alberto González Reverón officially resigned from office on Wednesday. The resignation comes after the failure of his appeal against a Court judgment in June which imposed a four and a half year disqualification from holding public office. The mayor had repeatedly refused to step down until his appeal was heard; despite an increasing clamour that he should do so. The now former mayor Reverón said that although he had the absolute respect for the judicial administration, the sentence against him was “unjust, disproportionate and inhumane”. The opposition PP, however, has called for Reverón to repay any salary taken since the initial judgment on the grounds that the appeal had no chance of success anyway. There had been heated debate demanding mayor Reverón step down but still he clung on, arguing that he wasn’t required to resign until and unless his appeal ratified the original judgment. Even a report commissioned by the Secretariat of Arona
Ayuntamiento itself has found that there was an “incompatibility” between the mayor’s public office and the sentence he has been handed by the Courts, which disqualified him from holding public office. Arona PP councillor Dionisio Rocha said that the mayor must now recognize that his judgments had been wrong, and that the continuing media spectacle benefited nobody. Back in July Mayor Reverón was under attack from all sides, not just opposition politicians, but Arona residents’ associations too. The mayor had “lost the confidence of residents since he was found guilty, and it wasn’t legitimate for him to continue in his position” said representatives of resident associations Almácigo (Los Cristianos and Sol del Sur de Las Galletas) and Plataforma Ciudadana de Playa de las Américas. Both called for his immediate resignation for “a continued crime of corruption through irregularities in contracting council staff. Santa Cruz Juzgado de lo Penal number 1 imposed the penalty of four and a half years disqualification of holding public office. The mayor said at the time that the ruling is “totally unjust” and that he would appeal.
Businessman Murdered In Silencio
The police are investigating the death of local businessman, Antonio Miguel Rancel Vargas, owner of the Mercafruta shop in Las Rosas. He suffered a brutal beating in the early hours of Thursday morning near the Albatros residential complex. Apparently, at the time, Vargas was alone in the street and was attacked by several people. It is not known what they managed to steal from the victim. An ambulance took him immediately after discovery to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora in Candelaria and he was admitted to Intensive care due to the
severity of his injuries. However, he later died. According to reports, had he survived the attack owing to the nature of his injuries, he would have been left with major disabilities. Antonio was father to two children, was separated and lived with his mother. His funeral took place on Wednesday attended by many of his friends, family and customers. Costa del Silencio has been scene, in recent years of several violent episodes, including the murder of a retired British man in his home by two minors in February 2010. The Civil Guard is aware of several complaints from other people who have also suffered brutal beatings in their homes in the area.

The crisis, the unemployment, the evictions, the social exclusion... The current economic situation has pushed many Canarian families’ situations to the absolute limit. Indeed some families, in an effort to avoid losing their children forever, have had to ask the regional government to take charge of their offspring until they can afford to keep them again, it is what in legal terms is called guard, a figure which takes charge temporarily of the child until the family situation improves. Although from the Directorate-General for the protection of the child and the family of the autonomic Executive agrees that the crisis is not the only reason why some parents have delivered their children into care, the truth is that in the past three years a total of 237 children have been taken in residential regime or in foster care by the regional government. Of these, 77 were handed over
by their parents last year, a figure slightly higher than the posted in 2010 (70), but less than recorded a year earlier, when 90 children were put into care. In most cases, explained from the Directorate General of the minor, “it is intended that the child is taken by a nearby family or family environment, usually in their home town”. Of the 77 children in the archipelago that were taken into the care system 2011, 56 were homed in their own towns thanks to the extensive network of centres that manage the different Island Cabildos. While waiting to see the figures for the current fiscal year, the Ministry of social policy said “the objective of the Canarian Government is monitoring children living in centres waiting to live temporarily with a family”. For this reason, the Councillor for culture, sports, social policies and housing, Ines Rojas, has started a campaign to encourage families on the Islands to temporarily accommodate children who need help. Under the slogan ‘ Do you care to learn? Do you care to grow? and Do you care to play?’, the regional Executive, within the framework of the
Canarian family foster care programme, wants to highlight temporary foster for children who need care in the homes of the Canarian families. “Even if they are only in a temporary custody situation, is better that you are placed within standard families, especially when it comes to small children”, reiterated the Directorate-General. As shown by different agencies specializing in children, families who need help are numbered around 50% between Spaniards and immigrants and situations generally coincides with high family stress, where unemployment and evictions are the order of the day. “It is usually borderline situations”, say sources, who insist that “many times parents are on the street looking for resources, they have exorbitant schedules or paltry wages. There are also many housewives who are unable to afford to feed their children”. For this reason, entities such as SOS Children’s villages or messengers for peace have changed the aims of their aid, if they were previously based on the educational support; they are now focusing on covering gaps in food. “The aim is that the family will find the necessary support
to avoid putting the children into care”. The President of Unicef in the Canaries, Nereida Castro, said that “38% of the Canary Islands children are on the threshold of poverty”. In a statement to the Canary Islands Teide Radio-Onda zero programme, Castro reiterated that the Islands minors are in a “very difficult” situation. “We are trying to develop various actions so that children do not see their rights violated,” To ensure the rights of the children the United Nations is working with the Ministry of education to carry out “cross-cutting actions” and “comprehensive policy” which will alleviate this serious problem. The director general of protection of children and their families, José Gilberto Moreno, presented a programme of activities directed at families on the occasion of the international Children’s Day, “The goal is to remind society that they should respect and promote the rights of children; something that we must remember every day,” said Moreno. The Ministry of social policy has prepared workshops, lectures and exhibitions in order to teach society about children’s rights.

la laguNa ‘TeleTHoN’
on Saturday 15th of December local TV has organised a new ‘Telethon’ for the collection of non-perishable food for the benefit of around 40,000 needy Tinerfeños. The ceremony will start at 12.00 hours at the central tower of the conception of La Laguna and runs until midnight. This solidarity party will be broadcast live and you can follow through DTT, through the web of the channel (www. mirametv.com) or the fixed signal of the Hispasat Satellite. This will be the third Telethon, and the aim is to beat the 80 tons of food that were collected during the last celebration, in what already has become the most important
collection of food in the history of the Canary Islands. As on previous occasions, the food will be distributed through the two collaborating charities, The Spanish Red Cross Cruz Roja and Food Bank. To liven up the party, more than 30 Canarian artists will appear on stage and national music will be featured. According to recent data provided by Caritas, more than 33% of the population of the Islands lived below the poverty threshold in 2011, while the forecasts for this year point to a growth in the levels of misery that would reach to 38% of the population. Four out of six children only eat once a day and rely on foods that they receive in school. A situation which
in view of all the indicators looks set to continue in the coming months. In the archipelago, according to the latest survey of active population (EPA) data, there are already more than 378,000 unemployed. Dozens of companies, not only in the food industry, have confirmed their collaboration in this latest charity Telethon, as have many private individuals, public administrations and associations, various groups and the media. “We cannot look for the other way while the people go hungry. The current situation requires the action of our people so that as on the two previous occasions, we learned lessons in humanity and generosity,” says the director, Manuel Artiles.

Spain’s Bad Mums Strip For Bank Investment School Bus
Spain’s Santander is to invest in the country’s so-called bad bank in a sign that healthy domestic lenders are willing to support the entity that was created to clean up the after the 2008 property crash. A spokesman for Santander said “The bank plans on investing in the bad bank”.
Spain set up the bad bank to siphon off toxic assets from bank balance sheets from the property market that date from the property crash. Its creation was a condition of receiving up to 100 billion euros of aid in a European bailout of the country’s financial sector. Spain’s second biggest bank, BBVA, alongside Sabadell and Caixabank are also considering investing, but have yet to make a decision. An Economy Ministry source said that the bad bank could go ahead just with backing from domestic investors but foreign investors would give it credibility. It will initially have equity of 3.9 billion euros. But the govern-
ment needs private investors to stump up 2.2 billion euros, or 55% of this, in December. Private sector support is key because the government wants to keep its stake in the bad bank below 50% and so reduce the burden on state finances. The bad bank, known as Sareb, will initially receive assets of soured loans to house builders and foreclosed property from four state-rescued banks, including Bankia, worth 45 billion euros. It will have a maximum asset value of around 90 billion euros. Equity in the bad bank could
rise to 5 billion euros after including assets from a further group of banks, aside from those taken from the staterescued banks. The government hopes eventually to raise 500 million euros of investment from foreign investors, or 10% of the final equity required. The rest of the bad bank will be financed by senior statebacked bonds. Government sources said that Spain’s bank restructuring fund, the FROB, could use part of the European aid to invest in the bad bank, and as such, would not need to tap markets.
A group of school mum’s in eastern Spain have decided to pose nude in a calendar aimed at collecting 43,000 euros which is needed to restore school transportation services for their children. “I’ll do anything for my child and if I have to undress, because in Spain it seems that that’s what has to be done to get attention, I’ll do it,” Maria Gilabert, one of the mothers of the Evaristo Calatayud school in Montserrat. The problem is that the 80 students at the school have had their school bus taken away by decision of the regional authorities, and
they say that their kids have to walk 6 kilometres across unpaved roads to get to their school. “My case is especially complicated because I don’t have a driver’s license or a car to take my child to school, said Gilabert. Then somebody got the idea of the calendar, just like the fire fighters and police officers have already done to raise money for good causes. The mothers, most of whom are young, are posing for the calendar inside bus stop shelters or next to the steep embankments of the town with the objective of highlighting the difficulties they are having with their children’s school transportation. “Next year we’ll see what we’ll do, whether the husbands have to get naked,” said another of the mothers.

Brazil & Spain Working Together BoASTInG “one of the most open economies in the world,” Spain is an ideal place for Brazilian firms to invest, King Juan Carlos said on Monday as he hosted a luncheon for Brazil’s president, Dilma rousseff after talks between rousseff and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano rajoy. The Spanish monarch gave a toast at the beginning of the luncheon to the ties and affinities existing between Spain and Brazil. In her address, rousseff said that speaking multilaterally, “europe and Spain have an ally in Brazil ready to take part in any pact favouring the recovery and growth of global demand and employment.” The king spoke of the need for the two countries to promote ever closer trade relations as part of a growing “interdependence” that can be observed in the fact that Spain is Brazil’s biggest European investor and the second in the world. “Spain has already become the European base for many IberoAmerican companies, and that’s what we would like for Brazilian firms as well,” Juan
Carlos said. Rousseff recalled that last year’s bilateral trade worth a record 8 billion euros is still “small” compared with the tremendous potential offered by economic relations between the two countries. The Brazilian president, who participated over the weekend in the 22nd Ibero-American Summit in the southern Spanish city of Cadiz, noted there the need to combine policies of austerity with others promoting growth. Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said “Brazil is taking a spectacular leap forward. There is going to be a great deal of investment in the years to come and Spanish companies want to be right there and we want them to be there because it is good for us and because we believe we can contribute through our knowledge and experience”. He recalled that “With almost 55 billion euros of accumulated investment, Brazil accounts for almost half of our investment in Latin America”. In turn, the President of Brazil expressed her agreement “on advancing specific proposals to add new spirit to our relations”. In terms of economic affairs, she stressed that work will be done on improving trade flows and stimulating relations on issues related to the management of hydraulic resources, the naval industry, roads and railways, etc.
Back To The Work Shop!
SPAIn’S King Juan Carlos is scheduled to undergo a hip operation, to allow him better mobility. he told government leaders at the Iberoamerican Summit that he has to “go back to the workshop.” “I’m here, a bit lame, but well,” the 74-year-old monarch told Colombian President, Juan Manuel Santos, earlier on fri-
day as he steadied himself on two crutches.
The king said that it was his left hip that will be operated on. It is the latest hip story to come from the Spanish royal family, in April he was flown back from a controversial elephant hunting safari in southern Africa after fracturing his right hip joint. He has had several health scares in the past two years, including knee surgery and the removal of a benign lung tumour.
PokerStars Wins Court Battle A long-running legal dispute between PokerStars and Spanish gambling giant Codere has finally been settled as a Barcelona court ruled that the online poker site had operated lawfully since it began its services in the country in 2001.
Land-based gambling company Codere had claimed that PokerStars had been operating illegally prior to Spain implementing a new regulated market last June and sought an injunction to prevent them from operating in the country. However, according to a press release by PokerStars, the court ruled they could not have operated illegally as “the
lack of regulation meant that there was no relevant law preventing such activity.” Reacting to the news, Paul Telford of Group General Counsel explained: “This ruling confirms the legal advice we have been given and which we have followed in Spain for years. We are very pleased the court agreed with our position and look forward to continuing to provide our licensed poker services as the leading brand in the Spanish market.” With Codere also pursuing injunctions against several other online gambling companies on the same grounds, the precedent set by the Barcelona court’s ruling makes it look very unlikely that their wishes will be granted and they may have to withdraw their claims.

Residency Permits for Foreign House Buyers Aimed especially at the Chinese and Russian market, Spain is to offer residency permits if they buy houses worth more than 160,000 Euros as part of an attempt to reduce the country’s stock of unsold homes. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy stressed that the plan has not yet been finalised. He added that Spain “needs to sell these homes” and that getting them off the market could help revive the nation’s property market. Trade Ministry secretary Jaime Garcia-Legaz said the plan, expected to be approved in the coming weeks, would be aimed principally at foreigners markets as the domestic demand was stagnant and shows little or no sign of improving. Spain has more than 700,000 unsold houses following the collapse of the property market in 2008.
The country’s economy is struggling and is currently in recession with 25% unemployment. Thousands of houses have been repossessed by banks and their owners evicted because they cannot pay their mortgages. Last week, the government approved a decree under which evictions would be suspended for two years in specific cases of extreme need. Spain’s offer beats others in bailed-out countries such as Ireland and Portugal, where residency papers are offered to foreigners buying houses worth more the 400,000 Euros and 500,000 Euros, respectively. It was not immediately clear if the residency would only refer to Spain, and not the European Union. The stricken state of the country’s property market was highlighted earlier this week by figures from the Bank of Spain which showed that the level of bad debt in the country’s banks had risen to a record 10.7% of their loan total in September. The bank said the amount totalled 182 billion Euros, up from 179 billion Euros in August — the 15th monthly increase in a row. The 16 other countries that use the euro have agreed to
lend Spain up to 100 billion Euros to help support the country’s banks weighed down by these bad loans and investments. Spain has also been under pressure to apply for more outside financial aid to help it manage its debt and deficit. The European Central Bank has insisted on the move before it will make good on its pledge to buy the bonds of certain troubled countries to help
lower their borrowing costs. Spain says it is waiting to know all the conditions that might come attached to the rescue package before making a decision The Spanish government has devised a new plan to reduce the number of unsold homes by offering permanent residency to any foreigners who buy a house or apartment worth more than 160,000 Euros.
The plan is expected to be approved in the coming weeks and will be aimed mainly at Chinese and Russian buyers. Spain has more than 700,000 unsold houses following the collapse of its real estate market in 2008. Demand from the recession-hit domestic market is stagnant. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy stressed that the plan
has not yet been finalised. The plan to unload the unsold homes comes as thousands of houses have been repossessed by banks and their owners evicted because they cannot pay their mortgages. The government last week approved a decree under which evictions would be suspended for two years in specific cases of extreme need.

The russian’s are Coming
ruSSIAn tourists are among the few groups who are benefiting from the eurozone crisis. Whilst historically favouring package trips to Turkey and egypt, russians have been able to use the downturn to their advantage, and are choosing the hardest-hit members of the eurozone as their new holiday destinations. According to a new study compiled today by russian daily Kommersant, the tourists are now flooding to Spain and Cyprus, where visitor numbers increased by almost 50% this summer compared to the same period in 2011.
Spain is now the numbertwo destination for Russian holidaymakers after Turkey, and saw 797,800 visitors from Russian between June and September, a 44% increase from the previous year. According to Kommer-
sant’s research, Russians are now the fastest growing tourist demographic in Spain. Cyprus saw the number of
Russian tourists’ jump 48& to 315,900. Greece also saw a double-digit jump, with the number of Russian tourists increasing 12% to
432,400, according to Kommersant. The trend has been good news both for the Russians and the countries they are
visiting. The Russians are getting deals and discounts they couldn’t get before the crisis. And the host countries have a new demo-
graphic of visitors to help increase tourism, a plus as Russians tend to spend more per holiday than their European counterparts.

Peppa Pig Makes It In Spain
Spain is now the second largest territory for Peppa Pig products. Entertainment One’s licensing programme for Peppa Pig in Spain goes from strength to strength, the territory is now only just behind the UK for merchandise for the brand.
The firm’s Spanish licensing agent, El Ocho Licencias y Promociones has confirmed 32 licensees for Peppa Pig. The first product to hit shelves was a range of story and activity books from publishing partner, Random House. Since the launch in February, the Peppa series has sold over 200,000 books. The top title - Peppa Goes Swimming - has sold over 37,000 books to date. In addition, master toy partner Bandai has already exceeded all retail expectations with a line
of Peppa play-sets and figures launched this autumn. Based on Character Options range, the toys will be supported by a marketing campaign including TV, print and online advertisements, plus retail support in-store. Claudio Reig has launched a line of branded electronic instruments, while Simba, Educa Borras, CEFA and Fournier have an assortment of puzzles, educational games, playing cards, puppets, construction sets and ride-ons. A raft of marketing promotions is also being worked on with retailers such as Toys R Us, El Corte Inglés and FNAC. Entertainment One is also currently translating the official Peppa Pig website for the Spanish market to be launched later this month. “Our agent El Ocho has assembled a really strong line-up of partners and we’ve been impressed by both the quality of merchandise
that our Spanish licensees are producing and the support that retailers in the territory are putting behind the brand,” said Ami
Dieckman, international licensing manager at Entertainment One. “Given the challenging retail climate in Spain, the demand

for Peppa licensed merchandise is overwhelming and it’s a fantastic start to the licensing programme.”
Less Salt Is Healthier Campaign
The Ministry of Health is on a mission to reduce the consumption of salt and fats in Spain and they are using technology in the form of the internet, mobile phones and Twitter to get their message across. They have launched a campaign called The Plan.
“It’s a modern and interactive strategy aimed at the young, who are used to new technologies”, explained the President of the Spanish Agency for food safety and nutrition (Aesan), Pilar Farjas. Spain uses almost double the amount of salt recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and more than 12% in fats. Once registered in the Ministry’s new Plan, participants will answer about their, eating and physical activity habits every Monday to Friday, for twenty days, this will provide all the information necessary to create a ‘health formula’, so says the Adviser of
national strategy of Aesan, Teresa Robledo. As a reward, at the end of each week participants will receive recipes developed by the school of hospitality and tourism of Madrid including children’s dishes, quick, easy meals as well as desserts. All these recipes can be obtained through Twitter (@plancuidatemas) or on your mobile, simply by downloading a free application which will send through brief notifications and news flashes on physical exercise and healthy eating habits. Pilar Farjas has underlined the importance of the consumption of salt and fat, mainly saturated, as well the need to undertake a physical activity commensurate with age. It has warned that WHO statistics show that two out of every three deaths, in developed countries, occur from chronic diseases caused by ten risk factors. These deaths, six factors can be directly related to food and physical exercise: hypertension, cholesterol, BMI, alcohol, physical inactivity and inadequate consumption
of fruits and vegetables. “Preventing obesity is beneficial for your health and quality of life,” said Farjas, who states that in Spain 9.8 g a day of salt is consumed when the recommended intake is only 5 gr per day; and fat intake is a 42% when only 30% is recommended. In addition, the consumption of saturated fats should only be 10% and in
Spain figures have reached 13%. Farjas says that in the last year, when The Plan was launched with the slogan “Less salt is healthier”, efforts have been made with some sectors involved. The bread industry has achieved a reduction of 20% less use of salt in bread, and now they are trying to get meat and additives companies to cut 10% in the use of salt and 5% of saturated fats.

spain goes green
THE Spanish government has given the go ahead to 26 international projects aimed at helping the country comply with the Kyoto protocol. It is predicted that the schemes will help Spain reduce its CO2 emissions by 3.8 million tons each year. Among the initiatives being funded are wind farms in developing countries including India, Mexico and Tunisia. Spain has used emissionstrading projects to reduce CO2 emissions by 299 million tons since committing to the Kyoto protocol – a UN-backed international agreement aimed at combating climate
change – in 1997. The country has been under pressure to reduce its emissions since the government announced in February that Spain would need to buy at least 355 million Euros of credits to comply. Last month, an EU report said Spain faced a ‘considerable challenge’ to meet its obligations. Spain has spent more than 750 million Euros over the past five years on emission permits and offsets in an effort to meet its target. Ministers are also currently in negotiations with Slovakia over the purchase of 22 million tons of surplus emissions credits.
€8.2 Million Spain’s Deficit Bail for King’s Is On Track Son-In-Law
Spanish prosecutors have asked a judge in a court in Palma on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, to set bail at 8.2 million Euros for the king of Spain’s son-in-law and his former business partner before their possible trial in a corruption case that has been causing a headache for the monarchy for the past two years. Although the husband of the king’s second daughter, Princess Cristina, Inaki Urdangarin hasn’t been charged with a crime, he is a suspect in a case in which he and his business partner allegedly moved about 5 million Euros in public money intended for their nonprofit foundation and invested it into other companies they controlled between 2004 and 2006. Urdangarin risks having some of his properties embargoed if he fails to provide the bail but he wouldn’t go to prison.
Spain’s Treasury Minister Cristobal Montoro said the central government deficit for January to October for this year was 3.9%, unchanged from last month, and on track
to hit its target of 4.5% by year-end. The figure, which is equivalent to 41.2 billion euros does not include extraordinary items such as early transfers of funds to the country’s 17 autonomous
regions. “This puts us on the right path to meet the target for the end of the year,” he said in Madrid. The central government deficit does not include the country’s pension or social security system.

SHe’S aN M.P. geT Her ouT oF THere!
The first live eviction in the reality show, “I’m A Celebrity…. Get Me out of here ousted Tory MP nadine Dorries after just 12 days in the jungle. Ms Dorries, who was suspended from her party for going on the ITV show, was voted out by members of the public. On learning of her eviction, she told hosts Ant and Dec it had been a “fascinating experience”. She said: “I actually came here self-important for a few days - but I’m not now. I needed that missile and I think all MPs need that. I came from a council estate and never thought I was like that, but I was. I’m not now.” When asked if she felt she had achieved her aim in raising awareness of political issues, she said: “I don’t know what people have seen, but I have had some fascinating conversations in there. It’s been a fascinating experience. I think it is important that MPs realise that you need to go where the public go. More people vote on X Factor and I’m A Celebrity than they do in the general
elections. MPs need to go where people vote.” The Mid Bedfordshire MP predicted David Haye would be the winner, with Helen Flanagan and Eric Bristow making up the final three. She said she had guessed she would be the first to go. She said: “I’m not disappointed at being the first, especially when you’re starving. I kind of expected it actually. I don’t think the public actually understand how hard and how difficult it is down there. The effect it has on your body when you’re down there with three teaspoons of rice a day is hard, hard, hard.” Ms Dorries was suspended as a Tory MP after flying to the jungle without permission from David Cameron or informing senior Conservative Party officials of her intentions. Her decision to take part in the show angered colleagues and con-
stituents, but she insisted she would use it as a platform to promote politics and engage the electorate. Before going on I’m A Celebrity, she said “It can’t be that hard”, but then went on to fail three challenges. Asked if she regretted those words, she replied:
“There’s like this massive adrenaline rush and your brain’s screaming ‘no’ and you have to overcome it, but sometimes I can’t.” On eating lamb’s testicle and ostrich anus, she said: “I would never have thought I would eat any of those things in a million years.”
Ms Dorries has promised to donate her MP’s salary to charity for the period in which she appeared on the show. She is expected to stay in Australia for the duration of the show, before flying home, no doubt to the mother of all show downs!
Mendes To Produce Bond No 24
WhILe most of us have barely had time to see the latest Bond movie “Skyfall” discussions are already underway for Sam Mendes to make a second, following the phenomenal success of his first. The oscar-winning American Beauty director has been working on a plot for a follow-up, according to the regular screenwriters of the series. Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who have both worked on five James Bond films, have also revealed they are leaving the franchise. Speaking during an appearance at the fourth Doha Tribeca Film Festival, Wade said: “We’re very happy to have done five Bonds, I think we’ve gotten it
to a good place.”I know that John Logan (screenwriter) and Sam Mendes have come up with a plot for another one, which takes the pressure off because these films take up a lot of time.” Purvis, who has been writing movie scripts with Wade for 28 years, said: “We were going to stop with Quantum Of Solace, but it’s good to go out on a high with Skyfall.” Current 007 Daniel Craig, who has starred in the last three Bond adventures, is already contracted for a further two. Skyfall, which was released last month, became the UK’s biggest box office hit of the year in the space of just 12 days. It is the most financially successful Bond film ever, having already taken more money than the highlyacclaimed Casino Royale in 2006.

Celebs Honoured By The Queen
TAKe That singer Gary Barlow and oscar winning actress Kate have both been presented with honours by the Queen. Winslet, who was awarded a CBe for services to drama, said she and the monarch had discussed the joys of motherhood when she collected her honour. The 37-year-old star said the Queen had congratulated her and asked how much she enjoyed acting. “I said yes I liked it but not as much as being a mother. The Queen replied: ‘It is the best job.’” When her honour was announced in June, Winslet, who won her Best Actress Oscar in 2009 for her role in The Reader, said: “I feel deeply proud to receive this, as a part of an ever-expanding community of British actors and film-makers who are fortunate enough to be able
to contribute to an international industry. This makes me very proud to be a Brit.” Take That star Barlow, 41, said he was “deeply proud” to be given his OBE. Although he refused to talk to reporters after his investiture, he said in a statement he had been surprised by the award and that it “hadn’t seemed real until today”. The X Factor judge was the brains behind the triumphant Diamond Jubilee concert, staged at the Palace during a specially declared bank holiday weekend in June, which featured a host of stars including Stevie Wonder and Sir Paul McCartney who played to a televised audience of millions. The anthem Sing, written with Andrew Lloyd Webber, and featured at the Jubilee concert, topped the singles charts during the summer and Barlow’s OBE was announced days later in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Another award winner was Ryder Cup-winning golfer Darren Clarke who was given an OBE for services to the sport. Afterwards, the charismatic Northern Irishman,
44, said meeting the Queen was more nerve-racking than winning any major tournament. He captured the nation’s hearts in 2006 when he put in one of the great-
est ever performances in the history of the Ryder Cup at The K Club near Dublin, just six weeks after his first wife, Heather, died of breast cancer.

iCe laDy Trial
GoIDSArGI estibaliz Carranza Zabala, dubbed the “Ice Lady” in Austrian newspapers has gone on trial for murdering two men and concealing their body parts in concrete under her ice cream parlour. She has been charged with shooting her husband dead in 2008 and her new partner in 2010. Described as the “trial of the year”, prosecutors allege she sliced up the bodies of Holger Holz and Manfred Hinterberger with a chainsaw and hid the pieces in concrete that she mixed in a cellar under her shop in Vienna. Human remains were discovered by chance during maintenance
work in June 2011. Carranza, who is in her 30s, is accused killing her husband when he refused to leave after she revealed she had a lover, the Austrian Independent reported. The online news outlet adds she allegedly murdered her boyfriend two years later after discovering he was seeing another woman. She took shooting lessons and courses in how to mix concrete and bought a new chainsaw just prior to the killing. After fleeing to Italy, Carranza, who has joint Spanish-Mexican citizenship, was captured and later extradited. At the time of her arrest, Carranza was two months pregnant by another man, whom she later married in prison. The baby was born in January and the baby boy
was immediately taken away from her and is now reportedly being looked after by Carranza’s parents in Barcelona. The Austrian Independent said a 140-page report into her mental state ruled she is fit to stand trial
for the double murder after she admitted to a court psychiatrist: “I could kill again.” The report also said Carranza, now in a unit for the “mentally abnormal”, was dangerous and was like a “princess ... who just wants to be ‘rescued’ by a man”.

“She intends to confess. She has already told the court-appointed expert everything that she did, as she also did when she was arrested by the Italian police,” Werner Tomanek, one of her defence lawyers, told news agency.
Waterspout in Charlie Chaplin australia auction
A SPeCTACuLAr giant waterspout formed close to the shoreline at Batemans Bay in the Australian state of new South Wales earlier this week. Local residents at Long Beach described it as “a giant twister” that was “swirling with water”. Despite lasting about 15 minutes and having the potential to reach speeds of up to 160km/h, the giant funnel of cloud and water, which occurred about 225km south of Sydney, did not cause any damage.
Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology told the Sydney Morning Herald that the phenomenon were impossible to forecast and should be considered dangerous to nearby swimmers or surfers. Forecasters warned of more severe conditions to come in the state, particularly in the north, after a weekend of wild weather. Thousands of lightning

strikes and wind gusts of up to 100km/h were reported on Saturday and Sunday, causing power lines to come down and at least one home to collapse. Authorities advised resi-
dents to take precautions, moving cars under cover or away from trees, securing or putting away loose items around the house, and keeping clear of fallen power lines.
The items were expected to reach between 31.384 and 47.076 euros by Bonhams Auction house. In a statement Bonhams recalled how Chaplin created the famous appearance and clothing worn in movies such as “City Lights” (1931) and “Modern Times” (1936). So legend tells,

Jasper, The Dachshund Walks again
Before JASPer, a Dachshund, is working with scientists at Cambridge university helping dogs to walk again after severe spinal injuries offering hope to paralysed human patients. Movement was restored to the dogs’ hind legs by bridging breaks in the spinal cord using olfactory
After ensheathing cells (oeCs) taken from their noses. The cells support nerve fibre growth that maintains a communication pathway between the nose and the brain. Jasper has been described by its owner as “whizzing around the house” after undergoing the treatment.
Owner May Hay, from Cambridge, said: “Before the trial, Jasper was unable to walk at all. When we took him out we used a sling for his back legs so that he could exercise the front ones. It was heart-breaking.” The random controlled trial is the first to demonstrate effective spinal cord repair in “real life” injury cases. Professor Robin Franklin, one of the study leaders from Cambridge University, said: “Our findings are extremely
exciting because they show for the first time that transplanting these types of cell into a severely damaged spinal cord can bring about significant improvement.” In the trial, scientists studied 34 pet dogs that had all suffered spinal cord injuries as a result of accidents and back problems. One group of dogs had the OEC cells taken from the lining of their own noses and injected into the injury site. Another was only injected with the liquid
in which the cells were suspended. Dogs were tested for neurological function at onemonth intervals and had their walking ability assessed on a treadmill. Those that had been injected with the OEC cells showed significantly improved movement. Prof Franklin said the technique could restore “at least a small amount” of movement in humans with spinal cord injuries, but warned patients not to expect too much from the
approach. He said the procedure was likely to be used as part of a combination of treatments, alongside drug and physical therapies. Professor Geoffrey Raisman, chair of neural regeneration at University College London, said: “This is not a cure for spinal cord injury in humans - that could still be a long way off.”But this is the most encouraging advance for some years and is a significant step on the road towards it.”

Egypt Bus Crash
Up to 47 people were killed when a train collided with a bus in a city south of the Egyptian capital Cairo. Up to 27 of the dead were children aged between four and eight years. The bus driver and two women were also killed. The Egyptian state news agency said another 13 people were injured. A medical source said as many as 28 were injured, 27 of them children. “They told us the barriers were open when the bus crossed the tracks and the train collided with it,” Doctor Mohamed Samir said. He also stated the bodies of many of those killed were severely mutilated, indicating
the force of the crash, which took place in the city of Manfalut, near Assiut, 190 miles south of the capital. President Mohamed Mursi ordered his ministers to offer support to the families of those killed. Transport Minister Mohamed Rashad offered his resignation, which President Mursi is considering, state media reported. The governor of Assiut, Yahya Keshk, has ordered an inquiry. Egypt’s roads and railways have a poor safety record. Egyptians have complained that successive governments have failed to enforce basic safety standards, leading to a string of deadly accidents. Earlier this month, three Egyptians were killed and more than 30 injured in a train crash in Fayoum, another city south of Cairo, and in July, 15 people were injured in Giza, close to the capital, when a train derailed.
Bobby Elvis Presley Brown Film Found Arrested
The ex-husband of Whitney Houston, Bobby Brown, pleaded not guilty to drink driving following his second arrest this year on similar charges. The plea was entered by the R&B singer’s lawyer in a Los Angeles court. He also pleaded not guilty to two other charges. Brown, 43, was arrested last month on suspicion of driving while under the influence, his second such arrest this year in Los Angeles. He is also charged with driving on a suspended licence and not having an ignition locking device on his car, a legal requirement from a previous case. He is scheduled to appear in court on December 13. Brown pleaded no contest to drunken driving last April, after being arrested in Los Angeles, and entered rehab in August under a plea bargain.
A film of Elvis Presley holding a news conference before his Madison Square Garden gigs in 1972 has been found. Recorded on June 9th, the day ahead of his legendary four nights at the New York venue, it has been added to a 40-year anniversary DVD and CD set edition of Prince From Another Planet.
Lenny Kaye, who attended the conference, says in the documentary: “They said that Elvis was coming to town and would I like to cover it, go to the press conference and observe it? Also it was not your general music business so much as a general mainstream press.” Presley is seen joking with journalists as he arrived for the event, one of the last before his death five years later. When a female
journalist asked him if he was really the “shy, humble, wonderful human being” the press claimed, Presley showed off his belt and said: “I don’t know what makes them think that, you know, there’s the gold belt.” The DVD includes footage of Presley’s performance on June 10, 1972, captured on hand-held camera by a fan. The concerts that year were the first and last time that Presley played in New York.

School Dinner Fundraiser BABY blogger Martha Payne has published a book about her fundraising to raise more than £120,000 for charity through her controversial project. Martha, aged just 10, hit the headlines this year when her local council banned her from posting photographs of her school dinners onto her blog. A media storm followed as well as support from around the world and Argyll and Bute Council relented and Martha’s fundraising to help feed children in Malawi through the charity Mary’s Meals went through the roof. Father, David Payne, said: “I am very proud. It started as such a simple idea and it’s amazing how social media can drive something. We never thought it was going to be anything more than a writing project and then it went viral and it went round
the world. It is really about the emotional ride we went on.” Mr Payne, from Lochgilphead, said that if Argyll and Bute Council “hadn’t made the choice to ban it the response wouldn’t have come in and the money for Mary’s Meals wouldn’t have been raised, so the cloud has a silver lining”. He added: “I do feel that the way they handled things could’ve been done better and I still find it frustrating now.” Martha’s support for Mary’s Meals led to a trip to Malawi where her efforts have funded a kitchen shelter. She was accompanied by her parents, grandfather, brother and younger sister Polly, who thinks what Martha has achieved for Mary’s Meals is “very amazing”. Named after her blog Never Seconds, the book features Martha’s story along with material from her blog and healthy eating tips for children. Every copy sold ensures a donation to Mary’s Meals. Publishers Cargo said: “Martha’s story is the story of the year and we’re delighted to be able to tell it.”
iPad robbery renel rene richardson, a worker at new York’s JfK airport, has been arrested after the theft of thousands of iPad minis worth £1.2m. he was held by police investigating the possible “inside job”.
Thieves using forklift trucks escaped with around 3,600 of the gadgets, which had been ear-
marked for China. It is alleged that Richardson had two helpers in the robbery at the Cargo Air Services building, where he worked, according to a criminal complaint filed in Brooklyn federal court and cited by the New York Post. Police believe Richardson acted as a lookout while the two other individuals loaded pallets of the iPad
minis onto a truck. They are said to have arrived at the building at around 11pm, in a white tractor
trailer marked with the name Ceva on the side. They then pulled up to a side of the airport building which faces onto a street, which has less security than the other side. The thieves could have got away with more iPads, but were apparently foiled by three other workers returning from a meal break. The cargo site where the theft took place is the same building where £3.1m went missing in 1978, in a robbery made
famous in the Goodfellas film. It is not known if the iPads have been recovered.

The hubble Space Telescope has recorded a fuzzy cluster of stars 13.3 billion light years away, which is believed to be the most distant object ever observed. Scientists think the galaxy, code-named MACSo647-JD, and could be one of the building blocks of the early cosmos. It dates back to when the universe was just 3% of its present age of 13.7 billion years. Light from the tiny embryonic galaxy began its journey to earth 420 million years after the Big Bang which is said to have created the universe.
Now it has been pictured with the help of a natural “zoom lens” more powerful than any man-made telescope. Gravity from the huge cluster of galaxies between the Earth and MACSO647-JD bent light rays from the object in a way that massively magnified its image. The “gravitational lensing” effect allowed astronomers to photograph the galaxy using Hubble. Dr Marc Postman, from the Space Telescope Science Institute in the US, led the Cluster Lensing and Supernova survey with Hubble (Clash) team. He said: “The cluster does what no man-made telescope can do. Without the magnification, it would require a Herculean effort to observe this galaxy.” This is the second time this year that the record for the most distant object
seen has been broken. In April, Clash astronomers announced the discovery of a galaxy that existed when the universe was about 490 million years old, making it more remote than anything seen before. However, the new galaxy is 70 million years older than this object. MACS0637-JD is less than 600 light years across, making it a galactic microbe. In comparison, the Milky Way is 150,000 light years wide. The baby galaxy has a mass roughly equivalent to between 0.1 and 1% that of all the stars in the Milky Way. Dr Dan Coe, also from the Space Telescope Science Institute, said: “This object may be one of the many building blocks of a galaxy. Over the next 13 billion years, it may have dozens, hundreds or even thousands of merging events with other galaxies and galaxy fragments.” The team spent months confirming that the object really was a distant galaxy. Some nearby objects such as red stars, brown dwarf stars and dusty star clusters can mimic the appearance of a very distant galaxy. To check the results, astronomers also studied images from the American space agency Nasa’s Spitzer Space Telescope. Galaxy distances are measured by looking at their “red shift” - the extent to which their light waves are stretched and made redder as the expanding universe carries them away from the Earth. MACS0647-JD had a “red shift” of around 11, meaning that its light was so stretched it could only be seen through near-infrared filters.

Ikea Shame
Ikea has said that it “deeply regrets” the use of forced prison labour by suppliers in communist East Germany more than twenty years ago. The Swedish furniture giant apologised after commissioning a report into claims that political prisoners worked in its factories making products back in the 1960s and 70s. Ikeas says it has never condoned the use of forced labour; however the report showed it failed to vet how its suppliers were operating.
The report states that Ikea managers “were aware of the possibility that political prisoners would be used in the production of Ikea products in the former GDR”. “We deeply regret that this could happen,” said Jeanette Skjelmose, an Ikea manager. “The use of political prisoners for manufacturing was at no point accepted by Ikea.” But she added: “At the time we didn’t have the well-developed control system that we have today and we clearly did too little to prevent such production methods.” Ikea commissioned accountants Ernst & Young to look into claims by a Swedish TV documentary in June that had first been raised by a human rights group in 1982. Rainer Wagner, chairman of
27
the victims’ group UOKG, said Ikea was just one of many companies that used forced prison labour in East Germany. “Ikea is only the tip of the iceberg,” he told The Associated Press in an interview earlier this week. Wagner said he hoped that Ikea and others would consider compensating former prisoners, many of whom still carry psychological and physical scars. “Ikea has taken the lead on this, for which we are very grateful,” he told a news conference in Berlin, where the report was presented. Peter Betzel, the head of Ikea Germany, said the company would continue to support efforts to investigate the use of prisoners in East Germany in future.
Comet Closures Cinema Shooting Foiled
Comet is to close between 30 and 40 stores by the end of November, according to reports. Administrators have announced 330 redundancies at the electronics retailer but there have been no job losses and all the chain’s 236 stores remain open. The majority of staff cuts have been made in Comet’s head office in Rickmansworth, Herts, as well as its site in Hull and call centre in Clevedon, Somerset. But the reported closures threaten the livelihoods of up to 1,000 shop staff.
Appointed administrator, Deloitte, Deloitte said it is holding talks with a number of potential buyers but is preparing to close down the retailer’s home delivery operation, putting a further 500 employees at risk, reports are suggesting. Any stores which do not close are expected to continue trading over Christmas. Deloitte added it was seeing record levels of trade after launching a sale across Comet stores last week. Neville Kahn, joint administrator of Comet, said: “We are in discussions with a number of parties who have expressed interest in parts of the business and we continue to work hard to preserve jobs.” The collapse of Comet is one of the biggest high street casualties since the demise of Woolworths in
2008 and came a month after the failure of JJB Sports. The group was hit by weak high street trading conditions, competition from online rivals and being unable to secure the trade credit insurance needed to safeguard suppliers. In particular, it was knocked by the lack of first-time home buyers, which have always been key customers for Comet. The high street electrical market in the UK has come under huge pressure as hard up shoppers put off buying expensive items such as TVs and large appliances and online rivals take a bigger slice of the market. Comet’s administration was brought in a few months after it was taken over by investment firm OpCapita, which bought the chain for a nominal £2 in February.
A mother stopped a planned shooting inside a cinema during a screening of the new Twilight film after she contacted police. Blaec Lammers, 23, has been charged with firstdegree assault, making a terrorist threat and armed criminal action. His mother alerted police after realising her son had bought weapons similar to those used in a cinema shooting earlier this year in Aurora, Colorado, during a screening of The Dark Knight Rises. Bolivar Police Chief Steve Hamilton said: “Thankfully we had a responsible family member or we might have had a different outcome.” He said Lammers had been under a doctor’s care for mental illness, court documents state that the suspect was “off of his medication”. Lammers’ mother con-
tacted police, saying she worried that with this weekend’s opening of the final film in the vampire series, her son “may have intentions of shooting people at the movie,” police said. She said she thought the weapons, two assault rifles and hundreds of bullets, bore a resemblance those used by the gunman who opened fire inside the Aurora cinema in July. James Holmes, 24, is accused of killing 12 people in that attack. Lammers told authorities he bought tickets for a screening of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 in Bolivar on Sunday and planned to shoot people inside the cinema. He also planned to “just start shooting people at random” at a Walmart store less than a mile away, police said.. He also stated he wanted to stab a Walmart
employee to death and followed an employee around in a store before officers intervened in 2009, according to police. He said he had purchased weapons and if he ran out of bullets, he would “just break the glass where the ammunition is being stored and get some more and keep shooting until police arrived”. Police said Lammers bought one gun on Monday and another on Tuesday. He then went to the town of Aldrich to practise shooting because he “had never shot a gun before and wanted to make sure he knew how they shot and how they functioned”. Mr Hamilton said it appeared the suspect obtained the firearms legally but that police were continuing to investigate “to determine how in fact he was able to obtain a permit”.

Bin laden Burial Secrets revealed
Artists Impression SeCreT internal military emails have revealed the operation to bury osama bin Laden’s body, was shrouded in secrecy and was referred to as “the package” delivered by “fedex” before its burial at sea. no sailors watched as the al Qaeda leader’s body was dropped into the north Arabian Sea from the uSS Carl Vinson. The emails, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act, are heavily edited but are the first public disclosure of government information about the terrorist’s death. Bin Laden was killed on May 1, 2011, by a Navy SEAL team that swooped on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. According to the Vinson’s public affairs officer, only a small group of the ship’s leadership was informed of the burial. “Traditional procedure for Islamic burial
was followed,” said an email sent on May 2nd from Rear Admiral Charles Gaouette: “The deceased’s body was washed then placed in a white sheet. The body was placed in a weighted bag. A military officer read prepared religious remarks, which were translated into Arabic by a native speaker. After the words were complete, the body was placed on a prepared flat board, tipped up, whereupon the deceased’s body slid into the sea.” The email also included the cryptic reference to the intense secrecy surrounding the mission. Gaouette, then the deputy commander of the Navy’s Fifth Fleet, used code words to discuss whether the helicopters carrying the SEALs and bin Laden’s body had arrived on the Vinson. “Any news on the package for us?” he asked Rear Adm. Samuel Perez, commander of the carrier strike group that included the Vinson. “Fedex delivered the package,” Perez responded. “Both trucks are safely en route home base.”
Although the Obama administration has pledged to be the most transparent in American history, it is keeping a tight hold on materials related to the raid. In a response to separate requests for information about the mission, the Defence Department said in March that it could not locate any photographs or video taken during the raid or showing his body. It also said it could not find any images of the corpse on the Vinson. The Pentagon said it could not find any death certificate, autopsy report or results of DNA identification tests, or any pre-raid materials discussing how the government planned to dispose of the body if he were killed. The Defence Department have refused to confirm or deny the existence of helicopter maintenance logs and reports about the performance of military gear used in the raid. One of the stealth helicopters that carried the SEALs to Abbottabad crashed during the mission and its wreckage was left behind.

g Stones, Still Rocking B
ill Wyman and Mick Taylor have been reunited with their former band mates for the imminent 50 And Counting shows.
For the band, which played their first gig in 1962 at The Marquee Club in Oxford St in London, it will be the first time in more than 20 years that they have all performed together. Wyman, 76, played bass with the band from 1962 until he retired in 1993. Rumours circulated earlier this year that he was once again rehearsing with his former band mates. Taylor was a member from 1969 to 1974 and replaced founder member Brian Jones, who died just one month after being asked to leave the band. He was the guitarist on what is widely considered to be The Rolling Stones’ best album, Exile On Main St. Full details about the four- date shows, which start in November, have revealed that there will be no support acts. They will celebrate half a century
of the group, with a full two-hour set of their hits, as well as a few surprises. Two dates in London are scheduled for November 25th and 29th at the London 02 Arena, before the band move to the Brooklyn Barclays Centre on December 8th and Newark, New Jersey, for the remaining two dates, 13th and 15th of December. There has huge been controversy over ticket prices, which begin at more than £100 and reach £1,000 for premium access. A spokesman for promoter Virgin Live said the gigs were a “one-off celebration of their 50th anniversary and not part of an extended global tour where substantial production costs can be spread over a lengthy period of shows”. Alongside the celebratory shows is the release of the band’s new video, Doom And Gloom, which sees the band team up with Noomi Rapace, the star of Prometheus and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The single is one of two new tracks from the band’s 80-track compilation album Grrr! which was released on November 12.

The Island That Isn’t
An island in the South Pacific, depicted on marine charts and world maps as well as on Google Earth and Google Maps, does not exist. So say Australian scientists. The supposedly sizeable strip of land, called Sandy Island on Google maps, was positioned midway between Australia and French-governed New Caledonia. But when scientists from the University of Sydney went to the area, they found only the blue ocean of the Coral Sea. The phantom island has featured in publications for at least a decade. Scientist Maria Seton, who was on the ship, said that the team was expecting land, not 1,400m of deep ocean. “We wanted to check it out because the navigation charts on board the ship showed a water depth of 1,400m in that area - very deep,” Dr Seton, from the University of Sydney, told the AFP news
agency after the 25-day voyage. It’s on Google Earth and other maps so we went to check and there was no island. We’re really puzzled. It’s quite bizarre. How did it find its way onto the maps? We just don’t know, but we plan to follow up and find out.” Australian newspapers have reported that the invisible island would sit within French territorial waters if it existed, but does not feature on French government maps either. Australia’s Hydrographic Service, which produces the country’s nautical charts, says its appearance on some scientific maps and Google Earth could just be the result of human error, repeated down the years. A spokesman from the service told Australian newspapers that while some map makers intentionally include phantom streets to prevent a copyright infringement that was not usually the case with nautical charts because it would
reduce confidence in them. A spokesman for Google said they consult a variety of authoritative sources when making their maps. “The
The Lonely House
A couple in China have created the ultimate road block after refusing to move from their home to make way for a new super highway.
Construction workers in the country’s Zhejiang province were forced to work around the stubborn family as they built the road to a new train station. Resident Zhang Ling and his wife refused to sign an agreement to move out of
the property, along with another couple, to make way for the four-lane highway. They argued the compensation package they were offered was not enough to cover their rebuilding costs and so instead decided on a life in the fast lane. Mr Zhang explained: ‘They didn’t offer us enough compensation to leave so we’re staying. ‘It could be a good opportunity for us,’ he told the Mirror. ‘We could open up a drive
through shop on the ground floor.’ The house is the only property remaining on the stretch of road built that will soon have thousands of cars whizzing past everyday. Difficult to move homes have been labelled ‘nail houses’ in China, following a series of disputes across the country. One of China’s most famous ‘nail houses’ has been given its own enclosed courtyard in the middle of a newly-built shopping centre.
world is a constantly changing place, the Google spokesman told AFP, “and keeping on top of these changes is a never-ending endeavour’.’
The BBC’s Duncan Kennedy in Sydney says that while most explorers dream of discovering uncharted territory, the Australian team appears
to have done the opposite - and cartographers everywhere are now rushing to un-discover Sandy Island for ever.
New BBC Director General
Tony Hall, the chief executive of the Royal Opera House, will replace George Entwistle as the permanent directorgeneral of the BBC, it has been announced.
Tony Hall will take up the role in march next year. BBC Trust chairman Lord Patten said Lord Hall, who was made a crossbench peer in 2010, would start the £450,000-a-year job in March, with acting director general Tim Davie remaining in his post until then. The BBC has moved quickly to appoint a replacement to Mr Enwistle after he left earlier this month, just 54 days into the job, over a Newsnight investigation that led to false allegations of child abuse against former Conservative Party treasurer Lord McAlpine. Lord Hall was head of BBC News and current affairs between 1996 and 2001; helping to launch BBC News Online, BBC News 24 and BBC Parliament. Mr Entwistle’s resignation left the BBC in crisis after the corporation had already
been rocked by allegations of a cover-up over decades of child abuse by late presenter and DJ Jimmy Savile. Lord Patten said Lord Hall, 61, was the ‘right person’ to ensure the BBC took a ‘long, hard look at the way it operates and put in place the changes required to ensure it lives up to the standards that the public expects’. Culture secretary Maria
Miller said: ‘Congratulations to Tony Hall on appointment as new BBC DG, has a very strong track record in successfully leading iconic organisations.’ Her shadow Harriet Harman added: ‘Tony Hall excellent choice for BBC DG. Right person to bring stability in these difficult times. Look forward to working with him.’

Cottage Pie with Cheese Crusted Leeks
here’s something different to try. I noticed this recipe a while back on a cooking programme. It’s a traditional cottage pie with a lovely twist. There are several ways to make cottage pie and it’s something everyone loves. I think this one is a cut above all the rest as the melted cheese and leeks on top of the mashed potato is a wonderful combination of flavours.
Food and drink facts
The first diet soft drink, called the “No-Cal Beverage” was launched in 1952.
The Polyethylene Terephthalate bottle was introduced in 1973.
Aluminium cans were introduced in 1957 and two years later the first diet coke was sold.
The stay-on tab was invented in 1974.
The pull-ring tab was invented in 1962 and the re-sealable top in 1965.
China uses 45 billion chopsticks per year. 25 million trees are chopped down to make them sticks.
Annually, France exports some 140 million bottles of champagne but keep 180 million bottles for local consumption.
Chocolate is the number one foodstuff flavour in the world, beating vanilla and banana by 3-to-1.
Plastic bottles were first used for soft drinks in 1970.
Watermelons are 97% water, lettuce 97%, tomatoes 95%, and carrots 90%, and bread 30%
Ingredients 400g minced beef 2 medium onions, peeled and chopped 2 carrots, peeled and chopped very small 1 teaspoon thyme 1 tablespoon parsley 1 level tablespoon plain flour 275ml beef stock 1 tablespoon tomato purée Salt and freshly milled black pepper (to taste) For the topping: 50g Cheese (mature cheddar is best!) grated 2 medium leeks washed and sliced Mashed Potato (nice and creamy) Salt and black pepper (to taste) Method First take a frying pan or saucepan and fry the onions until they are brown at the edges. Now add the carrot and cook for 5 minutes or so. Now turn the heat up and brown the meat. Then add the
herbs and some seasoning. Next, stir in the stock to the meat mixture. Finally, stir in the tomato purée. Now turn the heat down, put the lid on the pan and let it cook gently for about 30 minutes. Thicken it with gravy or cornflour, checking the taste and adding more seasoning as required. Preheat the oven to 200°C, gas mark 6. When the potatoes are done, drain off the water, return them to the saucepan. Next, add the butter and some seasoning and mash them to a purée. Don’t be tempted to add any milk here, because the mashed potato on top of the pie needs to be firm. When the meat is ready, spoon it into the baking dish. After that, spread the mashed potato evenly all over, then sprinkle over the leeks followed by the cheese. Then bake on a high shelf for 35 minutes until the top is crusty and golden. Tips/hints Turn it into Shepherds by changing the minced beef into Lamb. Use chicken stock to give it a nice rich flavour Mix some extra cheese into the Mash before your layer the leeks and cheese ontop!

GoInG fLAT Stick To What’s Important
As we are in the middle of a deep and lasting financial crisis, I wish that David Cameron and nick Clegg would concentrate on the important issues of the day instead of trying to reform every little thing that comes their way. If they spent as much time fixing the economy and jobs situation as they did on trying to rewrite every little law that exists and keeping each other happy, the uK would be in a far better position now than it is! As I awoke from my afternoon nap, a thought slipped into my head. heaven knows why. Why does an ambulance siren sound flat when it passes you? I decided to look it up on Google and hey presto. here is the answer. When the source of the waves is moving toward the observer, each successive wave crest is emitted from a position closer to the
observer than the previous wave. Therefore each wave takes slightly less time to reach the observer than the previous wave. Therefore the time between the arrivals of successive wave crests at the observer is reduced, causing an increase in the frequency. Yeah, right! Why do I feel as though I still don’t understand it! Anyway, apparently, it is called the Doppler Effect!
Chance Meeting
My good friend Chris Chambers, producer of “Stairway to the Stars” and presenter of channel 5’s “The real stars in their eyes” is staying with me for a few days and found himself wandering around Los Cristianos when he chanced upon a cabaret photo advertising that night’s show. The man in the photograph looked familiar and he pondered over it for a short while and remembered that the artiste was an 18 year old keyboard player in his resident band, Misty, in 1977 at Wall Park holiday centre in Torquay. The man in the photo was Tenerife’s own Mike Edwards who plays nightly in the Charly restaurant bar in Los Cristianos. My friend Chris decided to return in the evening to pay him a surprise visit. After all these years, 35 in total, it was a welcome surprise and great to reminisce about the good old days back on the holiday camps. Chris was only wandering around when he came upon the photo by chance, the same thing happened to me when I was back in the UK

Is Tom as“Reacher” A Bit of a Stretch?
I’m a fan of novelist Lee Child and of his most famous character, Jack Reacher, the man-mountain with hands like shovels, so when I heard that Hollywood was turning the novel “One Shot” into a movie, like many fans I was quickly pondering who would play the role. One actor I didn’t consider was jockey-sized scientologist, Tom Cruise. Many online fans were up in arms (don’t any of these people have jobs?!) but after an endorsement by the characters creator and early positive reports on the film, maybe Cruise wasn’t such a bad choice after all!! For anyone not familiar with books, Jack Reacher is the lead character in a series of thrillers (17 so far), an ex -military cop who lives his life as a modern day “ man with no name”, a drifter, who wanders across the land,
“an unstoppable force” righting wrongs and defending the weak, not because of a sense of right and wrong, he just doesn’t like to see people who aren’t able to fight back for themselves bullied. The movie, retitled simply “Jack Reacher”, is out December 21st.
During my time as entertainment columnist here at TW, especially during the early weeks, I was advised several times by my editor to “broaden my content” and not just cover things I like-although I can’t see what’s wrong with just covering sci-fi, fantasy, comic fantasy and science fiction, (very broad I thought!!), but it was good advice and it helped me become more like a trashy journo!! Thanks Lorna!! So when she reads this piece about something I like on T.V. She will probably audibly moan, expecting robots, vampires or vam-
piric robots or something, but bear with me......

Styles a “Swift” Mover
Move on Caroline Flack,it seems you are “never ever getting back together” with floppy haired One Direction singer, Harry Styles, the pop moppet has his sights set on American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift and if rumours are true, they are already dating. The two of them set tongues wagging on the set of the American X-factor last week when Harry showed up to watch Taylor rehearse for an appearance on the show. Xfactor host, Mario Lopez later said on his radio show, “I said, ‘what are you doing here,’ he sort of [pointed] toward Taylor.” Lopez went on to say he later saw the two “hand-in-hand.” Among her achievements, Taylor Swift, at 14, was the youngest ever songwriter signed to

I like it so much that having watched the incredible “minibus/wedding venue tragedy episode last week, I recorded the next night’s episode. And the next nights. It was riveting, shocking, heart-breaking and cleverly written and you had no idea who was not going to make it until they dropped the bombshell on you. My wife still thinks I recorded it for her but I guess my secrets out. My names Marc and I’m a Hollyoakaholic. Hollyoaks is on channel 4 weekdays at 18.30
Girls a-live!!
Children in need last Friday was a huge success with a record breaking total of 26.8 million pounds raised, but the big buzz on twitter and social networks were 2 live performances, One Direction (yawn) and the welcome return of Girls Aloud after over 3 years apart. All 5 members, Cheryl, Nadine, Kimberly, Sarah and that one that looks like Ronald McDonald, performed their latest single “something new” and a ballad “cause you love me”. When questioned by Terry Wogan about any
Sony publishing; she has won multiple awards (including 6 Grammys), has sold over 23 million albums and is in Forbes rich-list as being worth over $165 million......Harry ...has quite nice hair..... As we all know you can’t open your fridge door without one of Cowell’s clones jumping out and dancing in your face, Taylor, maybe you can let him stay with you at your ranch (she must have a ranch), maybe then we will get some peace!!
past disagreements they were quick to play it down, “what disagreements” exclaimed Nadine Coyle!! “There is no drama”, added Cheryl Cole -the 2 members most of the rumours were about!! The girls have an album called “Ten” this month and will tour next year, but it has also been revealed that there will have to be ANOTHER comeback in a couple of years, as back in 2009, the group signed a huge deal for 3 more albums-wonder who will fall out next time?!

beautiful semi detached house in el Madroñal de Fañabé
Clear Blue Skies Group SL in fañabé is one of Tenerife largest and most successful estate Agencies. run by a British family, they have a number of nationalities which means that in this office, many languages are spoken including Spanish, english, french, German, Italian and flemish. One of the most recent additions to our portfolio is this beautifully appointed, semidetached house in Los Girasoles, in El Madroñal de Fañabé. Los Girasoles was built around 5 years ago in several phases; this property is in phase 1 and is unique in design and layout. While most of the Los Girasoles properties are identical terraced townhouses, this is a one off and has
been lovingly decorated and furnished by its owners. Internally on the lower floor, there is a very large lounge and dining area, which thanks to the vast expanse of glass, always feels bright and airy. The large patio doors are protected by remote operated blinds, and outside by a remote operated canopy. The furnishings in the lounge are exquisite, with leather sofas, large built in TV over a feature fire, tables, chairs, and lights etc., presented in a most minimalist fashion. The kitchen has also been extended and is fully fitted with marble tops, quality units, oven, hob, and fridge-freezer. Consistent with the rest of the property, it’s light, airy, and full of soft, gentle colours. Finally downstairs, to
the rear, is another room which could be used as a fourth bedroom or an office, the current owners use it as both. Upstairs there are 3 double bedrooms, one to the rear and two to the front plus a family bathroom. The two front bedroom have patio doors which lead out to a large terrace, with fantastic views to La Gomera and the Atlantic Ocean, and the master bedroom has its own en suite bathroom. All of the bedrooms are furnished to perfection with high quality items throughout from bed covers to curtains to bedside tables. Externally, the high quality of design and presentation is maintained. Part tiled and terraced, part covered with artificial grass, with a large variety of small and medium sized
trees and plants surrounding the property. The area of El Madroñal de Fañabé is one of South Tenerife’s top areas. A couple of minutes from Gran Sur shopping complex, and the TF1 motorway, a short stroll from the highly acclaimed Colegio de Costa Adeje, and only 20 minutes walk from the fantastic beaches of Fañabé and Costa Adeje and the quality restaurants and nightlife found in that area. Sensibly priced at 420,000 euros, including all of the wonderful furniture, it’s a cliché but whoever views it will buy it! Find out more on www.clearbluetenerife. com, reference 4641 or visit Clear Blue Skies group SL in Fañabé Plaza, Fañabé or call (0034) 922 717 779.

‘Abusive Brother has Cancer’
Eyelashes for Cars the perfect Gift
www.eyelashes-for-cars.com
Weighty Issue S ince getting married
I’ve just found out my brother has terminal cancer and feel full of mixed emotions. The reason is because he abused me as a child. I haven’t spoken to him for years since our parents died but our other brother just told me the news. I’m not sure whether to contact him or not. Wendy Only you can decide what to do Wendy. Your brother betrayed you in the most ghastly way possible so I can fully appreciate how much you must hate him for that. Mixed emotions are a nightmare aren’t they? Right now you seem torn between the natural feelings of wanting to be there for this guy and the awful memories of what he did to you. I think before you go any further you should try to speak to some people who have been in the same
in association with
situation, perhaps understanding how they dealt with things and how they felt once their abusers had actually passed away would help you to make the right decision. Provided you give this whole situation some time and proper thought, I’m sure you’ll be able to do the right thing for you which is all that matters really.
to my husband three years ago I’ve put on over 8 stone. He’s always on at me to get back to how I was when we met so this New Year I told him my resolution was to join a gym and get fit, but after a few days I lost my will power and instead of going down the gym, I’ve been getting changed into my gym kit then going round my mates for a takeaway instead. He’s got no idea and to make matters worse I’ve even lied that I’ve lost half a stone when actually been putting on weight! Should I come clean?
Stacey Just for a moment, forget about your husband and look at what you’re doing to yourself,
‘Am I a Bad Mum?’
I’m worried that I’m being a bad mum as my 6-year-old son is always ill. If he’s not got a stinking cold, he’s got stomach aches or a rash. I’ve taken him to the doctors countless times but they don’t find anything particular wrong with him. He just seems to have a weak immune system. I feel like people judge me and think I don’t look after him properly. Ally Nobody said being a parent was easy did they? It does sound like you’ve been through it with your son Ally but I think you’re blaming yourself needlessly. You’ve done everything you can to help your boy through his various illnesses and I’m sure
you love and cherish him just like any other parent does with their offspring. One of the hardest things any of us can do is to ignore the wagging tongues and pointed fingers from our peers. That’s exactly what you have to do though, right now, you’re letting outsiders dictate your emotions as well as your opinion of yourself and that’s just plain wrong. As for getting to the bottom of the cause of your sons ill health, I would suggest that you keep on going back to the doctors until a proper diagnosis and treatment is found. Chin up though, you sound like a an amazing parent to me.
Stacey. You’ve turned into a complete liar and you are risking your long-term health because you can’t control your eating habits. The lying has to stop sweetheart its just getting in the way of you dealing with
what is obviously an issue for both you and your husband. You really should just stop this whole charade and admit that the gym just isn’t your thing. Your GP will be able to advise you on the best way to lose weight for YOU and to be honest, the most vital ingredient here is your own will power. You can carry on stuffing takeaway in your mouth and pretending to be at the gym but eventually your lies will come back and haunt you. Stop hiding from this problem and face it, you may well be surprised about just how easy it is to beat once you decided to channel your efforts into looking after yourself rather than living a lie.
‘I hate university’
I started university this year and so far I hate it. I don’t get on with any of my flat mates in my halls of residence and I miss my family so much. I was really excited about going as not many people in my family have had the chance and my family even threw me a big leaving party. I can’t let everyone down, but I can’t stand to stay here. Tammi Are you sure you’ve given this your best shot Tammi? Moving away from home into a strange environment is always going to be difficult. The regime of lectures and classes along with all the new faces is bound to be daunting. At the end of the day, you only have to please one person and that’s yourself. At the moment you have the weight of all your friends and families hopes on your
shoulders but it shouldn’t be that way. I’m not for one minute suggesting that you should quit now and go home but you do need to change your thinking to some degree. Think about your future and what you want out of life. University is the key to improving your chances isn’t it? You’re there for you and you alone so stop distorting the facts in your mind and take a different approach. Ultimately, if you are still miserable and uninspired after giving this your best shot, of course you should walk away. I just don’t think you’ve reached that point yet. Things change so quickly and once you manage to offload the pressure you’re under now, you may well find that things pan out and you start to enjoy what you’re doing. Good luck.

Suso at The Double as CD Tenerife Shine
SoMeone was going to get both barrels and Marino de Luanco were in the firing line as Suso broke his scoring duck with his first goals since returning from hearts. A convincing 4-0 home win kept CD Tenerife unbeaten in 13 games and still top of their section of the Segunda B division.
Right back Moyano forced an early Luanco save and Suso overcooked a cross that went wide of the goal. The pre match debate was Suso or Chechu, which of the speedy wide men would miss out, coach Alvaro Cervera treated the fans to both with Cristo making way and it proved a winning formula. Loro fired wide and a solo charge ended as the defence closed him down but Suso
was determined to score and when Chechu knocked the ball to him he celebrated wildly as he found the back of the net. Yeray came on for Medina after half time, another shrewd move from the manager; he lifted the tempo and got the midfield ticking. Sergio Aragoneses had little to do in goal but was alert to make two strong punched clearances when awoken; Guillem replaced the subdued Aridane and was a livewire in attack despite an early miss. He made amends with a sweet pass to Loro who banged in his 7th goal of the campaign. Yeray prompted the build up for the third goal, Suso pounced on the ball and tucked it neatly past the keeper. In injury time Nico, the third sub, found Guillem who hurdled a tackle and punished the keeper to round off a fine afternoon.
CD Tenerife v Marino de Luanco Beer Bar was still shaking when it was his turn for the singles. His darts were miles away from the doubles. He needed 31 rounds to finish. Marco was lucky that David Apolo couldn’t finish either although he was much closer to his doubles than Marco eventually both teams managed. 4-4 was a correct score. Jullie Nauta: “as ever what a great team to play. Thanks girls for a great game. And a brill afternoon” as the Beesness Hunnies took a close 3-5 victory... Ruth Beesnees Hunnies: “Thanks Julie, was a great afternoon as normal at the Nauta, Thanks for the food was lovely and the games were fun, great guys and gals”.

injuries Take Their CB Canarias Fade away against Valencia Toll on CD Marino Building on the first win of the season was always going to be tough for CB Canarias at home to second placed Valencia. The La Laguna basketball team started like a steam train but their powerful visitors ground them down to win 69 – 73.
AS if it wasn’t bad enough traveling to ourense with five first choice players missing, CD Marino’s two goal hero of the previous week, Balduino, limped off after 33 minutes.
It was all square at the time but Ourense took control and went on to win 3-1. Marino defended well for half an hour on a heavy saturated pitch that played a part in their big forward departing with an injured abductor muscle in his leg, the division’s top scorer Jona mastered the surface and grabbed a lead a few minutes later. Half time was in sight when Yebra smashed a 30 metre shot into the net. Substitute Adan gave Marino hope with a goal early in the second half but Ivan ensured victory as Marino tired. This Sunday Caudal are the visitors to Playa de las Americas for a 11 am start, a real six pointer against a team just ahead of Marino in the relegation zone.
There’s another home ACB league game this weekend but on Saturday against Lagun Aro at 7pm, a perfect starter for La Laguna’s Noche En Blanco night of late shopping and street entertainment. The basketball club will have a stall by the Iglesia de la Concepcion from 10am to 2.30pm promoting the sport.

Nauta A v Britannia (5 - 5) Last weeks stars for Nauta, both Jack and Simon just couldn’t produce the goods when it mattered, costing Nauta dearly. Tony (Oasis) cleared brilliantly to claim the first point, and Ian claimed the next on a black ball duel, to give the

In the 4th Stig miscued but still managed a pot from the break, Derek struggled from there. Tony (easily the best Oasis player on the night) played a masterclass in the first doubles. Leandro Merino a speedy left winger for Ibarra in El Fraile is off for a weeks trial with AHLI Sport Club in Qatar, if he impresses he could swap Spain’s Tercera division for a full time professional career in the scorching heat. At 20 years old he can even dream of playing in the 2018 World Cup finals when they are staged in the oil rich country. Britain’s Best Bakery ITV 1 - 4:00 - 5:00 pm A national search for Britain’s best bakery begins weekdays on ITV1. More than a food competition this series is a celebration of local bakeries around the UK, the delicious goods they produce, their regional specialities and their centuries old baking heritage. Expert judges Mich Turner MBE (TV chef, author and owner of Little Venice Cake Company) and Peter Sidwell (TV chef, cookery writer and restaurateur) will be sampling the delicacies of the country’s favourite independent, family run and community bakeries, tasting and critiquing their
43
way through breads, cakes, pastries and pies. The shortlisted bakeries compete in a series of baking challenges that put their skills to the test from organic artisan sour dough breads to the more obscure Bedfordshire clanger and the Lancashire courting cake, and include favourite bakes whose origins lie beyond the UK, such as baklava and bagels. Stripped across four weeks, the daily episodes of Britain’s Best Bakery will also reveal the heartwarming stories of the bakeries and the people who lovingly create and bake there.

astro-barilina’s twisted horoscopes
Aquarius 20 January - 18 February Three is the magic number for you, but you may find that one is sufficient for you. Your heroic attempts to liven up various social gatherings and get-togethers are all for nothing this week as you are finally brought down to ground by a professional clown. Pisces 19 February - 20 March Many of your problems can be solved by sitting down with a pen and paper and doodling pictures of houses and perhaps tornadoes. Feeding stray cats may seem important to you this week in order to get a feeling of overwhelming satisfaction. Aries 21 March - 19 April The truth is much harder to find than fiction. Don’t be afraid to spread damn dirty lies. It probably seems unreal right now, but you are likely to meet a long-lost relative over the coming month or so.
Taurus 20 April - 20 May Test yourself today, let go of your fears and grasp the nettle with both hands. The odds are always on your side this week, so don’t be afraid to experiment.
Gemini 21 May - 21 June
Let’s see how clever you can are. Attempting to count your lose change inside your pocket WITHOUT taking your hand or the money out. When aiming for greatness, set your sights to “better than greatness”...and when you fail like a miserable fool, you’ll at least be able to blame it on trying too hard.
Cancer 22 June - 22 July
A potential mate will come to you this week and destroy your self confidence. Bizarrely, you will attempt a counter-strike by sharpening your pencils. Loving care is something that people write on shampoo bottles. What you need is a good hard boink.
Leo 23 July - 22 August
Many of your emotions have been plagiarised by others who have no idea how you feel. NO IDEA I TELLS YA! Your ability to perform open heart surgery may be brought into question. Do not attempt to help an asthmatic in the local park that’s having breathing difficulties.
Virgo 23 August - 22 September
The merry dance that you’ve been led on during the last few months is finally going to come to an end. Sure, you’ll be dizzy as hell but finding out what’s been going on and why a certain someone has been treating you the way they have, will suddenly become clear. And clarity’s good, right? Even if you’re dizzy, clarity’s good.
Libra 23 September - 23 October
The best things in life are free, including back massages and adult pleasures. However, since it is possible to pay for these things one wonders this week whether they ought to be tried that way, too. Sweetheart is just another ugly word you learned from greeting cards. Start to think of better ways to address your beloved.
Scorpio 24 October - 21 November
Most of your dreams will come true over the coming fortnight, so prepare for wealth, health and happiness, you lucky dog. Alcohol can be a man’s best friend - not a dog...well, perhaps a dog that’s been pickled in alcohol. Find some candles, a night this week beginning with ‘W’ will be filled with darkness.
Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December
You notice that in films, it is always those opposite-sex characters that are continually angry with each other, who eventually climb into bed and have lots of fun. As tempting as it might be to see if your nemesis is up for a rumble, be aware that nipples don’t grow back if they’re ripped off.
Capricorn 22 December - 19 January
All of what you experienced this week will be catalogued under “things not to do in public again”. Your unblemished police record may take a turn for the worse by the end of the week!
