We all love living on our beautiful Island. Yes, we all have our troubles, we worry about bills, and we worry about our jobs, our homes, our families. But take a moment to think about the needy children on our island. Tenerife may be a beautiful place to live, but. Like so many other paradise islands, it does have its darker side. Many Canarian families are struggling so much more than we expats are. I have covered a couple of stories in the past week or so, highlighting evictions from their home of those in most need, and last week, the plight of families

Tenerife Weekly - 30th November - 6th December 2012 who were sending their children into care as they can no longer afford to keep them. This week the Canarian government has promised to make sure that families who would struggle the most over Christmas, will be looked after. While the schools are open, children are guaranteed at least one hot meal a day, but in the holidays, they cannot count on that, so, as they did in the summer holidays, food will be delivered to families’ homes to make sure they do not go hungry while schools are shut. It is good to hear that, although our small island is in financial straits, it will allocate an amount from the annual budget

3

to make sure children are safe. Allocations have also been made from the budget to make sure this continues in 2013. If you are considering doing anything for charity this Christmas, have a think about helping our island’s children. The Helping Hands are a registered charity that specialises in helping children here, they have a Facebook page, or you can telephone them on 661 27 42 81, or the Smile Foundation, also a registered charity, run by Club La Costa that raises money for 4 children’s homes in Tenerife.

See you all next week,

The Social Affairs department of Santa Cruz City Council will amend this year’s budget to enable making provision for 132 children suffering from a serious food shortages and malnutrition due to the current crisis. Council member Alicia Alvarez explained that IMAS (Municipal Institute of Social care) and the Treasury, headed by the nationalist Mayor Alberto Bernabé, have done everything possible to find the money needed to carry out this initiative, which involves an expenditure ranging from approximately 6,000 to 10,000 euros. This means that children whose families do not have resources have guaranteed food during this Christmas holiday period in which schools, and therefore the dining halls are closed. Álvarez recalled that it was

her predecessor, the Socialist José Manuel Arocha, who managed to feed these children during the summer holidays via a company that took food to their homes, something that had never been done previously. Although in the 2012 budget there was no budget appropriated for this action, the economic crisis and the very difficult situation which numerous families were going through, Arocha made a quick decision to ensure that lunch and snacks were provided while schools remained closed. In the summer 18,000 Euros was allocated to Eurest Collectivities, the company responsible for the distribution of the food house to house. Now in the face of Christmas, and seeing that the situation has not improved for any of these families, and therefore, the children, the new mayor, who replaced Arocha after his resignation, also wanted to do everything possible so that in the winter holidays, so from December 21 until January 8, this action will be repeated. “After much time and effort to enable us to see where we could remove

money to guarantee the distribution of food in Christmas, finally we’ve got it. It will probably be the same company that performed the service in summer”, explained the head of Social Affairs in the chicharrera capital. Alicia Álvarez said that the 2013 budgets already has an allocation for the distribution of food to minors in the periods in which schools close, i.e., in Easter, summer and Christmas. This amounts to 30.000 euros and will go entirely to contracting a company to ensure that the food is delivered to the required homes. Also, the Councillor of Social Affairs said that chicharrero is trying to ensure that the area also has a budget for next year to start two day centres for children with limited resources that will be opened in the municipality, probably located in Ofra and the Southwest. “The City Council of the capital will increase the budget for 2013 and make provision for Social Affairs, but the problem is that the central Government, who runs the PP, has made cuts in the concerted Plan, so now Santa Cruz has to cover that

deficit,” said Alicia Álvarez. More good news for the children, this Christmas these children will be able to enjoy Deporlandia, a fair

that will be held at the Municipal Palace of sports on 26, 27 and 28 December and 2, 3 and 4 January, which includes loads of children’s ac-

tivities. The price is 45 Euros and 20% of the tickets will be allocated to needy children who will be given free admittance.

Spain received 5.1 million international visitors during October 2012, representing a drop of 3.2% compared to the same period last year, breaking the growth trend since the beginning of this year (2012). The same happened in the Canary Islands where last month there was also a decrease (of 2.5%) in the arrival of foreign visitors which totalled 933.880, according to a figures released by ‘The Survey of Frontier Tourist Movement’ (Frontur) released by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism minister José Manuel Soria. He said that the fall is “relative” due to the “exceptional” growth of 9.4% in October last year. Between January and October more than 52 million foreign tourists arrived in Spain, an increase of 3.1% over the first ten months of 2011, with the UK, Germany and France being the main source markets. Russia was among the countries with the highest increase recorded so far this year the amount of tourists from this country has surpassed the 1.1 million, an increase of 41.3% during October. Arona Ayuntamiento is finally dealing with the problem of abandoned and stray animals in the municipality. The council has called for applicant companies to tender for the job of dog catchers to find and remove dogs from the streets and thereby offer a service that has been loudly demanded by many in areas that have seen a great proliferation of abandoned animals. The call for tenders was published in the Boletín Oficial de la Provincia (BOP) on last Tuesday. Burnt human limbs have been found on a piece of land in the El Mayorazgo area of Santa Cruz. Police are working, at least initially, on the hypothesis that they are amputations from private hospitals. A local made the gruesome discovery after noticing a large bonfire and found that it appeared to be human limbs that were burning. He called the emergency services and bomberos attended to scene to extinguish the fire, along with the Homicide Group and Scientific Brigade of the National Police to carry out initial investigations. The trial of Irish couple Keyth Burke and Sara Stuart started this week. The couple have been charged with the murder of Abraham Báez, from Poris, in Arico, in April of this year. The man died after what police called a savage beating, from head and stab wounds. The couple had been remanded in custody since their arrest in May. A 95-year-old regular visitor to Tenerife was the victim of pickpockets in El Médano at the weekend. The thieves operate as a couple, with a woman coming to sit near the intended victim and being joined moments later by a man. It was only on getting back to his apartment that their victim realized his wallet had been removed from his shoulder bag, and by the time he tried to stop his card, 600 Euros had been withdrawn. Groups of Romanian and Bulgarian street thieves have again descending on the islands and they seem to be concentrating on elderly tourists. Holiday makers should be on their guard, particularly on the beach, in supermarkets and bus queues. ryanair has announced that as a result of the increase in airport taxes, it is to reduce its flights to Tenerife South Airport over the next few months. Flights to Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, as well as to Madrid and Barcelona, will also be affected. The reductions in scheduling, said to be of around 12% throughout the country, are expected to cost AENA around 25 million Euros in lost taxes from 648 or so flights a week. Some 4,500 jobs could also be in jeopardy. Ryanair said that it calculated that without the reductions, the increased airport taxes would have cost it between 75 and 80 million Euros more next year than this, and that they wouldn’t pass the extra charges on to customers just because AENA was bankrupt. Ryanair VP Michael Cawley criticized AENA’s policy of “disproportionate airport expansion” in building unnecessary terminals. Mr Cawley argued that AENA had not listened to its number one client, nor visited its Dublin headquarters as it has done with other carriers. To get the lost Ryanair flights back, he said, AENA would have to withdraw its tax hike.

WhY TeneriFe? TenerIfe has released a new model for economic development under the headline “Why Tenerife?” to promote the benefits and opportunities of investing in the island, and to attract international public and private investors. It is the first time that institutions and agencies such as the Cabildo, Puertos de Tenerife, the Chamber of Commerce and the ZeC have collaborated to optimise their resources to convince investors to take advantages of the island in International economic forums. This new brand, launched on 22nd November 2012 by the president, Ricardo Melchior, the financial vice-president, Carlos Alonso, the president of Ports of Tenerife, Zaragoza Pedro Rodriguez, the president of the ZEC, Beatriz Barrera, and Vice President of the Chamber of Commerce, Modesto Campos. The presentation, in which Spanish, English and French was spoken, included representatives of Morocco and Cape Verde, alongside representatives of the social and economic sectors of Tenerife. Carlos Alon-

so stressed the importance of air connectivity and aims to position Tenerife in the world of telecommunication projects such as Alix. He also reminded the representatives of the 141 airports the island is connected to via 88 companies. Regarding the importance of the ZEC, Beatriz Barrera said that “37% of the investments of the companies benefiting from this area come from the European Union, and also from the United States”. Pedro Rodriguez Zaragoza stressed the role played by Puerto de Tenerifes’ modern facilities, making

them high on the list in the mid-Atlantic, and Modesto Campos recalled that “at present there are currently 90 Tenerife-based companies

The conference was held in the Auditorium of the Museum of Nature and Man and with the Vice President and Director of Social Welfare, Aurelio Abreu; the Minister of Social Action, Cristina Valid, and directors of education, youth and equality and museums, Miguel Angel Pérez and Amaya Conde, respectively in attendance. Aurelio Abreu pointed out that this mobile application “reach-

es young people through platforms that are always open”. It’s a combination that educates while it entertains and is important that we have more awareness about gender-based violence”, he added. Cristina Valid said it is “an effective tool of prevention, and perfectly aimed at youth work”. We need to learn to express ourselves in their language if we want to understand them

operating in Africa and America and that “internationalisation is in capital letters”, and “is not an option but an obligation for all”.

Tenerife App The Cabildo of Tenerife has launched a mobile application aimed at promoting equality and help prevent violence in young couples.

The application invites the user to play by releasing three difficulty levels and winning the medals of each level through language and examples of their daily lives. This, it is hoped, girls and boys can learn about the stereotypes of romantic love, avoid getting into situations of a dominant relationship, reflect on violence against women and review through the Guide, how well your relationship is working. The launch was part of a Conference entitled ‘The prevention of gender violence in young couples’, organized by the sectors from education, youth and equality in the Cabildo to commemorate The International Day Against Gender Violence which took place on Sunday, November 25.

and the people who attend these conferences have the responsibility for everything learnt here today reaches young people”. Miguel Angel Perez pointed out that the application “is a novel way of reaching the young audience and adapt to new technologies, which is essential to transmitting a message of equality and fight against the gender violence in young couples”.

Tenerife – The Obvious Choice For Business

Tenerife will host various national and international conferences that will bring together more than 10,500 people in 2013. The Tenerife Convention Bureau (TCB), has worked, collaborated and provided services for international organisations so that the island became an obvious choice for their conferences. The economic Vice-President and Councillor of tourism of the Cabildo, Carlos Alonso, stressed in a statement “the great relevance of the island as a destination for congresses, conventions, events and incentive trips, which last year alone ac-

counted for 90 million euros in revenue for the island”. He explained that “Tourism is a prominent segment which covers the wide range of visitors who visit Tenerife, and so generates a great deal of activity that encourages different sectors such as accommodation, transportation or rental of rooms”. The island will play host to the 2013 Congress of plastic surgery and aesthetics, which will take place in June in the Magma exhibition centre; Congress of Costa Adeje, with 900 people expected to attend; in May, there will be a nursing conference at the Mare Nostrum Resort with 800 delegates; an intensive care medicine conference, with 1,500 people, is scheduled for June also at the Magma and the Congress of the

Spanish society of Gynaecology and obstetrics, which will be in May and will have 6,000 people in total to be shared between the Mare Nostrum and Magma. In addition, the International Congress on organic geochemistry, in September, will bring 600 delegates; of the Spanish society of Ophthalmology, in the same month, with 1,200 delegates which will take place at the Magma; and the National Congress of Rheumatology with expected 1,200 attendees. Various other large congresses are also planned for the coming year. In addition to bringing vital revenue to the Island, they will also boost the image of the island as a conference destination, as alongside the actual business of the conference; there will also be

WhatsApp Addiction

Misuse of the WhatsApp message service can be dangerous as it can be addictive for some people and can be difficult to control and be understood, warned a Professor of psychology of the University of the Basque country, Enrique Echeburúa. There are fears that simply watching the WhatsApp can be compromising. WhatsApp messages can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts between friends it can also be used as a control tool, argues the expert. However the messaging service has its positive side if used rationally, as a form of free, fast communication where you can exchange photos, videos and comments when connected to a wifi system anywhere in the world. However, the scene of a couple or a group of friends with a beer in one hand and a mobile in the other is frequent and represents one of the main problems of the WhatsApp: disinterest in real life, commented the expert at a Conference in Tenerife. The specialist used as an example of addicted persons who are able to write 40 messages

between ten o’clock and two in the morning, which can alter the normal course of life for anyone who works or studies. Another problem with addicts they are not able to stop chatting with other people and consult their phone constantly and responding to messages immediately. To cure an addiction, the professor recommends setting schedules for using the app. However it is possible that a person suffering from this addiction may have other psychological problems or it may be that it is too late and the addiction is already set. If that is the case, he suggests a withdrawal over one or two months before returning to learn to use it rationally, without it affecting their mood or relationships with other people. It is also important to know if the person suffering this addiction has other psychological problems such as emotional instability, insecurity in oneself, inability to communicate personally or extreme shyness. It is also a myth that this addiction concerns only teenagers, more mature people can also be affected. According to the psychologist, not seeing the face of the other person makes conversations more intense and spontaneous, it is difficult to qualify what is exactly meant in a message without seeing the other

complementary activities that will enable them to learn about tourism in Tenerife. Tenerife is due to receive 400 French travel agents from OPÉR Tourist Association in January as well as The Association of European broadcasters (EBU) which will

persons face. Although due to its recent introduction into society there is no data available associated with the irra-

also hold its annual Convention in Santa Cruz de Tenerife with the assistance of the directors of the major media companies from across Europe. Tenerife tourism is also working on other projects and is expected to confirm

tional use of the WhatsApp, but of the 80-90% of the population connected to the Internet between 5 and 9% use the tool inappropriately.

the attendance of the tourism awards for the British newspaper ‘The Times’ and the International Convention of an important group of the cosmetic industry, that would bring to the island over 2,200 professionals from 34 countries.

“We do not have figures but abuse of WhatsApp is probably even greater than on the Internet,” says the Professor.

liOnS 3rd AnnUAl ChAriTY ShOp STAFF lUnCh DeSPITe torrential rain some thirty plus Lions Charity Shop staff gathered at the La Pergola restaurant in Puerta Colon for a special Sunday lunch, the third of its kind organised by the Tenerife Sur Lions Club. The lunch was to mark the appreciation and thanks for the dedicated and hard work these volunteers have shown throughout the year. Much of the ability to continue the work of the Tenerife Sur Lions Club lies with these folk who staff the two shops and help run them with their good natured enthusiasm. But it’s not all hard work; there is the social and fun side too as the lunch proved. With two challenging quizzes to solve adding to the genial buzz of conversation and an excellent three course meal there was a real party atmosphere. At the conclusion of the meal the answers to the quizzes were revealed

accompanied by much good humoured banter inspired by Master of Ceremonies, Ken Sadler. Ken finished amid hoots of laughter with a card trick straight from the annals of the legendary Tommy Cooper. Lions President Norman

Goodall MBE brought a word of appreciation for all the hard work every one of the volunteers does in raising the funds which allows the vital work of the Lions to continue. He pointed out that not only over the past years had they

help raise funds to provide holidays for disadvantaged and challenged children and an annual Christmas party for others but they had also each played a key role in continuing the on-going Lions Organisation’s commitment to helping meet the needs

of the local community and those further afield. He further emphasised that with the growing impact of austerity measures the Lions were providing more and more help with local needs. Concluding, he asked Lions Club members present to

stand and join in a toast to all the Lions volunteers as a gesture of united appreciation. One thing is for sure the Lions Volunteers cannot be accused of “all work and no play makes for a dull charity shop” certainly not with this fantastic group.

Spain Tackles Sex Offenders

A new international initiative to prevent UK sex offenders travelling to other countries and gaining access to children through teaching or volunteering roles was launched in Spain yesterday.

HM Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain, Giles Paxman, said: “Sexual abuse of children is a detestable crime. We are determined to do all we can to help schools and other organisations working with children to protect themselves from the perpetrators, both at home and abroad. I am glad to see the interest the ICPC has raised in Spain. This initiative is part of a much wider programme of cooperation between Spanish and British law enforcement agencies. I sincerely hope it will protect minors as well as deter offenders.” Specialist Spanish officers tackling child sexual abuse have shared their expertise and experience of combating this crime with staff from the UK’s Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre during a two-day law enforcement workshop, which included the launch of the International Child Protection Certificate. CEOP’s International Child Protection Certificate (ICPC) is a new police check for UK nationals who are travelling and working overseas and will help identify and screen out those who are unsuitable to be working with children. CEOP has found that some international

schools, charities and other agencies overseas do not currently have access to the same level of police checks available to organisations in the UK, sometimes enabling sex offender to gain positions of trust with children. CEOP is the UK national law enforcement agency dedicated to protecting children from abuse. The certificate has been designed to help prevent known child sex offenders from gaining inappropriate roles in other countries. The schedule of events is being delivered through CEOP’s International Child Protection Network and is supported by funding from VISA Europe. Peter Davies, Chief Executive of CEOP: “There is clear evidence to suggest that serious sex offenders who are known to authorities in the UK will often seek out opportunities to work or volunteer abroad. In many instances this will be through teaching roles but could equally be through other occupations such as charity worker, orphanage worker or as a children’s home worker. The International Child Protection Certificate is intended to be a worldwide safeguard which will give employers and voluntary organisations reassurance that applicants have no convictions in the UK which would make them unsuitable to work with children. It’s the only UK police check for UK nationals and residents working overseas for some organisations overseas so it’s an essential pre-employment or placement check to protect children.”

Further information

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre CEOP works in both online and offline environments to protect children from sexual exploitation. Full information on all areas of work, as well as online safety messages and access to online reporting, can be found at www.ceop.police.uk For more information about the International Child Protection Network, please visit www.ceop.police.uk/icpn ACPO Criminal Records Office (ACRO) ACRO have many years’ experience producing police disclosures for a number of purposes including Subject Access and Visa applications. ACRO also host the UK Central Authority for the Exchange of Criminal Records (UKCA-ECR) which includes access to the criminal histories of UK nationals abroad. www.acro.police.uk To apply for the ICPC, visit www.acro.police.uk/icpc Further data - ACRO According to ACRO from 2008 - 2012, 457 UK nationals were arrested overseas for sexual offences against children. These countries included Germany, USA, France, Spain and Thailand. The results may reflect the reporting / notification procedures in these countries.

Iberia Strike Action

Iberia SA flight and ground crew have agreed six days of strikes during the December holiday season in protest against massive job cuts. The strikes are scheduled for December 14th and between December 17th and December 21st. The workers had earlier planned

five strike days, but now have called six days, representatives of Spain’s General Workers Union, or UGT, said during a news conference in Madrid. Iberia is part of the International Airlines Group, which earlier this month said it would cut about a quarter of the Spanish airline’s workforce and cut capacity as part of a restructuring plan to make it more competitive. UGT also warned that strikes would continue in January if the company

doesn’t change plans to cut the workforce by 21%. The planned layoffs include 573 pilots, 932 cabincrew members and 3,037 ground-

based employees. The airline also plans to cut the wages of many of the remaining workers. Iberia made an operating loss of

262 million Euros for the first nine months of the year, and IAG has said Iberia is incurring losses of 1.7 million Euros a day.

Catalan Backs ProIndependence Parties

Voters in Catalonia have backed parties that favour breaking away from Spain. Artur Mas, the current Catalonia president and leader of the centre-right Covergence and Union (CiU) alliance, had promised a referendum on “selfdetermination” if the election had given him a strong mandate. However, with just 50 seats in the 135-seat regional parliament the CiU was 18 short of the absolute majority he needed. Mr Mas had said he hoped to be the last president of Catalonia reliant on Madrid, acknowledged that he would now have to share power as he fights for greater sovereignty for the economically powerful Spanish region. “From this result we note that we are clearly the only force that can lead this government, but we cannot lead it alone. We need shared

responsibility,” Mr Mas told supporters in Barcelona. “There must be a period of reflection in Catalonia over the coming days. The presidency must be taken up, but we will also have to reflect along with other (political) forces,” he said, without naming a particular party. The pro-independence leftist party ERC was second with 21 seats after 97% of the ballots had been counted. “The vote is fragmented but the message is clear,” Ferran Requejo, political science professor at Barcelona’s Pompeu Fabra University, said. “Two-thirds of the electorate voted for parties that are in favour of calling an independence referendum, but Mas has been hit hard for his austerity policies.” Like the Basque Country, Catalonia, a north eastern region of with a population of 7.5 million people, has its own language and sees itself as different from the rest of

Spain. Until recently, Catalans were content just pushing for greater autonomy, and stopped short of seeking independence. But Spain’s

economic situation, which includes a 25% unemployment rate, and harsh austerity measures imposed by Madrid have added to the Catalans’

discontent and convinced many that they would be better off on their own. Catalonia accounts for onefifth of Spain’s total output,

and a greater share of its exports. However, the region has also suffered from Europe’s financial crisis and has a 44bn euro debt.

Nineteen Arrested In Spain And Uk In People Smuggling Investigation “Spain is becoming a hard place for organised immigration crime to operate”

UK Border Agency officers and the Guardia Civil have arrested a total of 19 people in the UK and Spain as part of a major international investigation into a suspected organised crime gang involved in people smuggling. Operation “MARLO” involved UKBA and Guardia Civil raids on addresses in Alicante, Madrid and London on Monday 26 November, and a further arrest in Hull today (27 November). The arrests were the culmination of a joint investigation into an alleged criminal network suspected of assisting Iranian migrants to reach the UK from mainland Europe. The investigation also involved the UKBA Immigration Liaison Office based in the British Embassy

in Madrid and the assistance of airlines. The network is alleged to have organised travel and provided false documents to their clients to facilitate their arrival at UK airports. The eight people arrested in the UK were aged between 23 and 56. In addition computers, documents and mobile phones were seized from a number of addresses and will now be examined. Co-ordinated action by the Guardia Civil saw eleven people arrested during raids in Madrid and Alicante in Spain. The gang is said to have been contacted by up to 100 potential customers per month and was charging its clients up to 18,000 euros each. Of those enquiries, on average 25 per month are believed to have become clients, with 20 per month heading for the UK. Chris Foster from the UK Border Agency’s Criminal and Financial Investigation team said: “This investigation is targeting an organised network suspected of being involved in a systematic at-

tempt to evade the UK’s immigration controls. “People smuggling is an international crime which requires international co-operation, so we have been working very closely with our Spanish law-enforcement colleagues from the outset. Our investigation will continue with the evidence we have seized.” Simon Cooper, UKBA Assistant Regional Director covering Spain, added: “Spain is becoming a hard place for organised immigration crime to operate, and criminals now know that they will be disrupted and brought to justice.” All those detained yesterday in the UK were arrested on suspicion of conspiring to facilitate an asylum seeker for gain. They are now being questioned at police stations in London. Anyone with information about immigration crime can pass it on via Crimestoppers at http:// www.crimestoppers-uk.org/, or call the UK number 0800 555111. Anonymity is assured.

BriTiSh CemeTerY reFUrB plAnS eXPATS in mainland Spain have launched a campaign to restore a British cemetery to its former glory. The burial ground, in Valencia, was established over 150 years ago as a final resting place for non-Catholic foreigners, including traders and sailors. however, the site, owned by the British embassy, is in dire need of restoration after suffering from theft and vandalism over the past few years. The International Women’s Club of Valencia (IWC) has decided to act after British expat Bonnie Hinzpeter, who came up with the idea, died earlier this year. The work will involve gardening, cleaning graves and restoring the chapel so that services can again be held there. “Bonnie was a lovely person, who was very popular and very involved in community conservation work,” said IWC mem-

ber Diana Clifton-Sewell. “Regrettably, she died of cancer before she could work on the cemetery, so

we decided doing it ourselves would be a fitting memorial.” The British Embassy

confirmed it had approved repairs to the cemetery’s fence and gate, while a Garden of

Remembrance is also being considered. British expat Trevor Nicholas, who looks after the cemetery

as a volunteer, added: “I hope the project raises people’s awareness of it as an historic site.”

Spain To Host South Asia Trade Fair

O

ver 400 companies from Sri Lanka, India, Dubai, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal will take part in the South Asia Trade Fair 2013 (SATF) on 14th -17th February, in Feria Valencia, Spain. Organized by Rangoli Events in collaboration with Feria Valencia and Event Horizon (Sri Lanka), Zing IMS (India), Frozen Moments and Culture Craft (Bangladesh), First Kathmandu (Nepal) and Aah!zure (Dubai), the Sri Lankan organiser said in a media release. The 10,000 square metre fair grounds will feature the latest fashion trends, art and culture from South-

ern Asia. This is set to be the first commercial fair of its kind in Europe with 25,000 visitors expected. The two opening days are reserved for professional visitors whilst exhibitors will showcase their products to the general public during the weekend. The aim of SATF 2013 is to consolidate exports from Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal and Dubai to Spain and the rest of Europe, creating a long term platform for manufacturers and customers. “It is about defining future European markets for South Asian industries, besides promoting their culture and tourism,” noted Marta Ferrando, Deputy Director of SATF 2013, on behalf of the organizing company Rangoli Events. Celebrity Indian fashion designers,

Rocky S and Neeta Lulla, will present their Summer and Autumn collections during SATF 2013. India’s top twenty jewellery groups including TBZ, Gili, D’damas and WHP will participate in the four day event conceived to promote Indo-Asian culture. Minha Akram from Event Horizon, Sri Lanka said the fair is a good opportunity for Sri Lankan organisations to showcase their products and explore new avenues in the European market. “We are keen on garnering a strong representation from Sri Lanka to emphasize the post war market conditions of the country. Feria Valencia is a reputed venue with 90 years of experience in creating trade fairs and we are confident in the event’s success,” she said.

Sephardic Jews Spaniard wins Rights In Spain Ironman In

Sephardic Jews already benefit from preferential naturalization procedures that require them to live in Spain for only two years before claiming citizenship. But now Spain has announced that it will ease the naturalization of Sephardic Jews whose ancestors were expelled 500 years ago, meaning that Jews will have to present only a certificate confirming their ancestry to claim a Spanish passport. The Federation of the Jewish Communities of Spain congratulated the government for “recognition of a right which does not depend on any gov-

Cozumel

ernment decree.” The organization added that the announcement needs to “culminate in a legal text that will specify the conditions to be met to assume nationality.” The government did not say how many Jews it is expecting to apply for citizenship, but it noted that a large number of Sephardic

Jews lived in Turkey and across Latin America. While estimates differ, the number of Jews living in Spain, 25,000 to 45,000 people out of a total population of 47 million, it is only a fraction of the number who lived in the country before 1492, when Jews were forced to convert to Christianity or go into exile.

The Ironman competition in Cozumel on Sunday was an open competition from the start; it was anybody’s guess who would win the race. Featuring an extremely strong and deep field of men and women, many of them capable of taking the top spot on the podium if all went well on race-day.

The race began under partly cloudy skies and a temperature of 69F and the clouds eventually burned off and temperatures were over 80F by the middle of the race. In Cozumel it comes down to who can handle the heat and the wind the best. In the end it was pro

Ivan Rana of Spain who impressed everyone with a marathon time of 2:44:05 that nobody could come close to matching. The pros were after the 2000 Kona Ranking Points that were up for grabs as they begin their

journey toward qualifying for the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Kona, Hawaii that will take place on October 12, 2013. There was also the incentive of winning part of the $75,000 in prize money. That would do it!

SuALLY shy and retiring Kate Moss is on a publicity rampage. She is in a documentary, telling all about a nervous breakdown she had when she was just 17. She has a back stage interview being released shortly, and an awful lot of her can be seen in the December issue of Spanish Vogue.

Moss, photographed by the late Princess Diana’s favourite photographer, Mario Testino and not only is she on the cover, beautifully shot as a simple classic headshot, inside she also poses nude with Jose Maria Manzanares, a Spanish bullfighter, with only his cape covering her bottom half. The shots are superb, and at 38, Moss proves she still has what it takes.

Four Die In UK Floods Four people have died since the latest bout of wet weather struck and Britain’s rain-battered areas are braced for more flooding misery and chaos, despite a drop in rainfall. The Environment Agency (EA) warned of a continued risk of flooding across England during a week of torrential rainfall worked its way through the river systems. A total of 156 flood warnings and 166 alerts remain in place, including two severe flood warnings for the River Elwy in the small city of St Asaph and the A55 to Rhuddlan in North Wales, posing a further risk to life. The EA has warned of a risk of flooding

in Gloucester, Salisbury, Oxford, Sunbury, Abingdon and York, while mobile flood defences have been erected in Shrewsbury and Bewdley in Worcestershire. It says areas around slowresponding rivers including the Thames, Trent and the Severn are at particular risk. It also remains concerned about the River Nene in Northamptonshire and Peterborough. St Asaph was devastated by the floods, after the River Elwy reached a record high of 14ft 3in (4.35m) and burst through flood defences - making it more than 3ft (1m) deeper than its previous record of 11ft 4in (3.47m) in November 2009. Hundreds of people spent the night away from their homes and were waking up to another day of devastation. Insurance assessor David Flatley

said there had been “significant” damage caused by the flooding in st Asaph. “It is not just clean water, it is from the river so there are contaminants - there’s mud and oil that has run off from the roads,” he said. “People often don’t appreciate that things like their kitchens have got to be ripped out, as well as the drying out process, which can take four to six weeks, there is the ripping out before the reinstatement ... in reality it may be more like four or five months before the majority of these people are back in their homes.” Thousands of motorists and train services are subject to holdups and reduced services in the West Country and the North East. An inquest has been opened and adjourned after the body of an elderly woman was discovered

inside a flooded home. A 21-yearold woman was killed by a tree, she was believed to have been sleeping rough in a tent in Exeter, and a man was killed after his 4X4 was trapped under a bridge in Somerset. Since last Wednesday, around 900 people in England and Wales have fled their water-logged homes after heavy rain left many properties uninhabitable and caused road and rail chaos. Prime Minister David Cameron has promised to take a “tough approach” on negotiations with insurers over homes in danger of flooding. Up

to 200,000 high-risk properties could be priced out of affordable cover when a deal struck in 2000 between the then Labour government and insurers ends next summer. On a visit to flood-ravaged homes in Buckfastleigh, Devon, Mr Cameron told residents the Government would do everything to “help them with the recovery”. “We have to make sure their insurance pays out, make sure the Environment Agency puts in place good flood defences, make sure there are better warning schemes,” he said.

New Anti-Stalking Laws

New anti-stalking legislation has finally become law in England and Wales. Although it has been illegal to stalk a person in Scotland since 2010 it has taken until now for the laws to be introduced in England and Wales. Campaigners claim the laws are now “harmonious” throughout the UK.

In England and Wales, it is estimated that 120,000 victims, mostly women, are stalked each year but only 53,000 are recorded as crimes by police and only one in 50 of those actually leads to an offender being jailed. As there have previously been no anti-stalking laws in England and Wales, abusers were often charged with the lesser offence of harassment. This resulted in more lenient sentences of 12 months or less in prison, while many being only being punished with community orders. Since the law changed in Scotland the effect of tougher anti-stalking legislation is clear. Before the changes only 70 offenders were prosecuted over 10 years, but since 2010 the figure has soared to 443. Ann, from Ayr, was stalked for almost three years by a man she thought of as a friend. When he heard about her stalker, he offered her support and even to stay in her home to help protect her and make her feel safe in her home. All the time he was her stalker, bombarding her with sexually explicit texts, messages and phone calls. Ann says “I ended up where my home

became a prison. I was terrified to go out, I kept the curtains closed, I even stopped putting on the television or playing music so I could listen if there were any sounds outside. I just couldn’t see a future; I couldn’t see an end to it all. I lost my friends, I lost lots of weight and I lost my hair. So when I discovered that my supportive friend was this crazy man who was stalking me it was total shock, disbelief, absolute betrayal and it took me a long, long time to understand how that kind of mind can work.” Ann’s stalker was eventually prosecuted and she decided to campaign for a change in the law in Scotland. She founded Action Scotland Against Stalking and was instrumental in bringing in the new anti-stalking legislation. Now she has extending her campaign through to the European Parliament, which is now looking at making anti-stalking laws compulsory in all European states. Ann said: “It’s about harmonising stalking laws so abusers can’t commit offences in one country then hide behind a lack of legislation in other countries. The campaign has lifted the lid off stalking and that helps the police, judges and the courts in dealing with abusers seriously. One in five men and women will become a victim of stalking in some form or another. We are not looking at a small problem.” Stalking is a growing problem, especially through social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Cyber stalkers falsely believe they have greater anonymity - but protection rights are tightening up.

The Hobbit Premieres in New Zealand

Tens of thousands of people, many of whom camped overnight, turned out in Wellington, New Zealand, to see the stars of the new movie The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The hugely anticipated film attracted Tolkien fans from around the world to the country’s capital where the movie - a prequel to The Lord Of The Rings franchise - was filmed. Actors including Martin Freeman, who plays the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett and Elijah Wood walked down the city’s main street on a 700-metre red carpet stopping to meet fans and sign autographs. The Hobbit trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson, is set 60 years before the Rings movies, but Jackson said it had benefited from being made after the conclusion of the J.R.R. Tolkien fantasy saga. “I’m glad that we established the style and the look of Middle-earth by adapting Lord Of The Rings before we did the Hobbit,” Jackson said.

He told Sky News he had been working on the movie right up to the last minute, only finishing it days before the premiere. British actor Andy Serkis, who plays the creature Gollum with a distinctive throaty whisper, said picking up the character after a near-10-year break was like putting on a familiar skin. “I was reminded on a daily basis with Gollum (that) he’s truly never left me,” he said. Martin Freeman was the director’s only choice for the lead role, and Jackson even agreed to pause filming so Freeman could carry out commitments he had back in the UK with the TV series Sherlock. “Between us - Peter (Jackson) and me - we hashed out another version of Bilbo. There’ll be others, but our version is this one and I hope people like it,” he said. The production was at the centre of several controversies, including a dispute with unions in 2010 over labour contracts that nearly sent the filming overseas and resulted in the government stepping in to change employment laws. The only sour note at the premiere came when animal

rights activists held up posters saying “Middle Earth unexpected cruelty” and “3 horses died for this film”. It came after claims last week that more than 20 animals died during filming. Jackson has stated

that although some animals had died on a farm where they were housed, none had been hurt during filming. New Zealand has become a centre for blockbuster movies thanks to the energy and

commitment of Jackson. Two of the top six highest grossing films of all time were made in the country, bringing many economic and tourism benefits. 2,000 locals were employed by the team behind the

Hobbit production. The second film, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, is due for release in December next year, with the third, The Hobbit: There And Back Again, due in mid-July 2014.

FACeBOOk COpYrighT hOAx fACeBooK insists that users retain full copyright of their photos and videos after a hoax warning went viral. Tens of thousands of people are thought to have copy-and-pasted a statement onto their timeline, asserting full copyright over their posted content. The viral post reads: “facebook is now an open capital entity. All members are recommended to publish a notice like this, or if you prefer, you may copy and paste this version. If you do not publish a statement at least once, you will be tacitly allowing the use of elements such as your photos, as well as the information contained in your profile status updates.” Users then attach a 50word statement saying: “In response to the new Facebook guidelines, I hereby

declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details, illustrations, comics, paintings, professional photos and videos, etc. (as a result of the Berner Convention). For commercial use of the above my written consent is needed at all times!” But Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes said its users had nothing to worry about. “We have noticed some statements that suggest otherwise and we wanted to take a moment to remind you of the facts, when you post things like photos to Facebook, we do not own them,” he said. “Under our terms, you grant Facebook permission to use, distribute, and share the things you post, subject to the terms and applicable privacy settings.” Facebook’s frequently asked questions section also specifically addresses the point of law. It says: “Yes, you retain the copyright to your content. When you upload your content, you grant us a licence to use and display that content.” While copyright fears appear to be unfounded, Facebook does collect large amounts of data about its

users. It knows when you look at another person’s timeline, send or receive a message, and the time, date and place where your photos were taken. If you log on or

post from a smartphone it can pinpoint where you are, while if you access the site from a computer it records the IP address you are using. All of this can be released as a

result of a valid court order in the UK, or a subpoena in the United States, as part of a civil or criminal investigation. Facebook says it “stores data for as long as it is

necessary to provide products and services to you and others”. This means that most information associated with an account will be kept until the account is deleted.

SeBASTIAn Vettel, driving for red Bull, has won his third world title in formula 1, only the third driver to ever win three titles in a row and the youngest ever to do so. he beat off the opposition by three points in the weekends Brazilian G.P.

In an incident-packed, rainaffected race, Vettel fought back to finish sixth after dropping to last on lap one following a collision. Fernando Alonso driving who finished second, meaning he needed Vettel to be lower than seventh to beat him. Lewis Hamilton, who led from the start, had a disastrous lap 54 when he was hit by Nico Hulkenberg which forced him out of the race, his last driving for Mclaren. After his spectacular win Vettel said “It is difficult to imagine what goes through my head now even for myself, I am full of adrenaline and if you poke me now I wouldn’t feel it. It was an incredible race. When you get turned around at Turn Four for no reason and it becomes like heading the wrong way down the M25 it is not the

most comfortable feeling. I was lucky no-one hit me but the car was damaged and we lost a lot of speed, especially when it dried up. Fortunately it started to rain again and I felt so much happier. A lot of people tried to play dirty tricks [during the season], but we did not get distracted by that and kept going, and all the guys gave a big push

red Sea At marilyn photo Bondi Beach Up For Auction

Another rare phenomenon has hit Australia, last week it was a waterspout, this week a red algae bloom briefly closed Sydney’s Bondi Beach to swimmers as the crimson tide came close to shore. nearby Clovelly Beach was also closed to the public as authorities conducted tests on the area in and around the Tasman Sea. Swimmers were advised to steer clear of the moving algae due to potentially harmful reactions.

Also known as noctiluca scintillans or sea sparkle, the algae has not been proven to have toxic effects for humans, but people have been advised to avoid contact as it is high in ammonia which can cause skin irritations. “It has got quite a fishy smell to it,” local lifeguard

Bruce Hopkins told the Australian Associated Press. “It can irritate some people’s skin but generally not much more than that.” The closure of the beach will be a disappointment for the locals, British tourists and expats who are basking in Australia’s summer temperatures of up to 40C.

A SChooL photograph showing a school girl Marilyn Monroe is going under the hammer. The 15-year-old, who was then known as norma Jeane Baker, appears in a panoramic shot of the whole class year at ralph Waldo emerson Junior high School in Los Angeles in 1941. The photograph, which measures 8 x 24 inches, is expected to fetch up to £1,500 when it goes under the hammer at the auction in Stockport, Cheshire. Also up for sale at the same auction are nine Christmas cards sent by Prince Charles and his then-wife Diana, Princess of Wales. The cards feature photos of young William and Harry growing up, include festive greetings and have been signed by the royal couple.

WW1 Code mystery A CODED Second World War message found attached to the leg of a dead pigeon has left code-breakers baffled. The code, which is hand-written on a sheet of paper headed Pigeon Service, was found in a red canister attached to the bird’s leg bone. Experts from UK intelligence agency GCHQ were alerted to the message by David Martin, who found the pigeon’s skeleton up the chimney at his home in Surrey, whilst he was redecorating. But GCHQ have said the message, which has 27 fiveletter code groups, is impossible to crack without a code book. Investigators were also left stumped by missing details, such as the date of the message and the identities of the sender, Sjt W Stot, and the recipient X02. A spokesman said: “Although it is disappointing that we cannot yet read the message brought back by a brave carrier pigeon, it is a tribute to the skills of the wartime code-makers that, despite working under severe pres-

sure, they devised a code that was indecipherable both then and now.” During the war code books would contain the keys to groups of four or five let-

ters, which had a meaning that was only relevant to a specific operation. Around 250,000 pigeons were used as couriers during the Second World War.

The end is nigh 21/12/12 An ancient Mayan Calendar prophecy has led to internet speculation that the village of Bugarach, near the Pyrenees, in south west france, will be the only place left after the apocalypse, which some are predicting will happen on December 21 this year. The local mayor is stepping up security because of fears of an invasion of people who think the end of the world is nigh. followers believe a nearby mountain has

magic powers and are convinced ufos will rescue them and take them to safety.

Although French authorities insist the scenario is ridiculous, they are taking the situation very seriously. Mayor Jean-Pierre Lord says over a hundred police will seal off the village from December 19-23 to keep out any Doomsday groups. “My message is very simple. I am telling people don’t come here for a simple reason there will be nothing to see here. So I insist don’t come here, especially as there will mainly be the police here,” he said. In the nearby ancient town

of Carcassone, officials say they are planning for every eventuality. “Taking into account the huge media interest this affair has created we have to take into account all security concerns and be prepared for all outcomes whether there are 300 people or 3, 000,” said security Chief Eric Freysselinard. The villagers are apparently unconcerned about claims of the impending Armageddon. Many said they were doubtful that extra-terrestrials would be coming to pluck survivors to safety. “I think it’s a big load of nonsense. I don’t think there are UFOs within the Bugarach Mountain,” said local bin man Jean-Luc Billard.

Madonna Wins Russian Court Case

Singing legend Madonna has been accused by a Russian court of inflicting “psychological trauma” on the people of St. Petersburg. She was also accused of spreading “homosexual propaganda”. The court rejected the claims saying that there was no evidence she had traumatised the citizens.

The plaintiff accused the singer of lowering Russia’s defence capacity by making young people more interested in “filth” than “familybuilding”, The St Petersburg court heard the case against the 54-yearold singer who performed in the city in August. The suit was filed after Madonna urged her audience to support the gay community. After the concert, nine conservative activists accused her of breaking the recently adopted law banning the promotion of homosexuality. They were seeking around £6.5m in damages. In court, the complainants said Madonna’s “violations” threaten to unhinge Russian social order: Court papers said: “A public, thoroughly planned performance affected the childbearing rates as after Madonna’s words Russia’s youth will be

more interested in filth than family building. The country is going to lose its defence capacity as a result.” Russian gay rights activist Nikolai Alekseyev dismissed the claims: “If two Madonna shows could affect Russia’s childbearing rates and defence capacity so strongly, then these activists should organise 20 performances in support of the institution of family. The problem they are likely to encounter is the fact that no one would come to see their show. People paid their own money to be able to see Madonna’s performance, because they like her art. No one was brought to the concert hall by force. These charges are a load of nonsense. The government is using these groups of people to cover up for their own inability to tackle the country’s demographic problems.” Madonna enraged some St Petersburg citizens by handing out pink anti-homophobia wristbands during her show and telling them to “fight for the right to be free”. Her stunt was a swipe aimed at the anti-gay law which saw gay pride parades banned for promoting “gay lifestyles” and the “propagation of homosexuality”. The Union of Russian Citizens, the People’s Assembly and the New Great Russia party filed the lawsuit

against the singer with their lawyer claiming her actions caused “psychological stress and emotional shock” amongst the audience. Madonna did not attend the hearing.

Madonna also used her Moscow gig to express support for the jailed members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot, jailed for performing in a Moscow cathedral. She told the 20,000 strong crowds: “I think they

have paid the price for this act and I pray for their freedom,” before stripping to her bra to reveal the words “Pussy Riot” written on her back. Russian politician Dmitry Rogozin branded her a “moralising slut”.

Truck Rescue Texas Pile Up

A man crashed through a railing of an overpass in his truck on Highway 217 in Beaverton, Oregan, in the United States and was stuck dangling over a busy motorway for an hour. The 38-year-old

driver was finally rescued by fire fighters and taken to hospital for treatment; he was reported to have escaped the crash with no serious injuries.

Emergency crews secured the truck from falling with

a fire engine, and used another to bring the motorist to safety. Part of the road was closed for several hours in both directions until the stranded vehicle was removed with a large crane. According to reports, the driver was charged with drinking and driving.

Two people were killed and up to 100 were hurt when 100 vehicles collided on a Texas highway in dense fog. The Thanksgiving holiday morning crash left trucks twisted on top of each other and authorities pulling survivors from the wreckage. Twelve of the injured were in a critical condition, officials said. The pile-

up happened on the Interstate 10 about 80 miles east of Houston.

“It was catastrophic,” said Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Rod Carroll. “I’ve got cars on top of cars.” Mr Carroll said uninjured drivers tried to help as authorities sorted through the wreckage. “It’s just people helping people,” Mr Carroll said. “The foremost thing in this holiday season is how other travellers were helping us when we were overwhelmed, sitting and

holding, putting pressure on people that were injured.” It wasn’t immediately clear how the pile-up began, but the fog was so thick that officers didn’t immediately realise they were dealing with multiple accidents. I-10’s eastbound lanes remained closed for most of the following day. Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Stephanie Davis confirmed that two people died in a SUV after the crash. She said at least 100 cars and trucks were involved in the accident.

lOUiS WAlSh viCTOrY LouIS Walsh has won a 500,000 euro settlement against The Sun after the newspaper carried false allegations of a sex assault. The X factor judge sued the newspaper after it published a story based on a false allegation that he sexually assaulted a man in a Dublin nightspot after a Westlife concert. The newspaper admitted that the claim, which was made by unemployed dance teacher, Leonard Watters, was false and apologised to Walsh accepting that the “alleged assault did not occur in the first place”. Speaking after the outof-court settlement, Walsh said he would not have

wished what happened to him on his worst enemy. He said: “I’m very relieved. This has had a terrible effect on me guys. It was all lies. And I’m very satisfied with this total vindication for me, but I remain very angry at the treatment I received at the hands of The Sun.” Eoin McCullough, senior counsel for News Group Newspapers, read an apology to Walsh at the High Court in Dublin. It said: “The Sun unreservedly apologies to Louis Walsh for any distress caused to him as a result of our article.” The Sun published an article on June 23, 2011, with the headline “Louis Probed Over ‘Sex Attack’ on Man in Loo” in which it was wrongly claimed Walsh groped Watters at the celebrity nightclub Krystle following a Westlife concert in April 2011. When the official complaint was made, The Sun and the Irish Sun printed

the story before Walsh was questioned under caution. He denied the accusations against him, and Watters was jailed for six months for making the false allegations. Walsh’s lawyer, Paul Tweed, said that a great deal of damage had been done to his client because of the online spread of the story and added that it was something he hoped Lord Leveson would address in his report on media standards. Mr Tweed said: “Although the person who fabricated the story has since been convicted in the criminal courts, this is a prime example of the serious damage that can be inflicted on an individual, whether they are well known or not, by the publication of totally unfounded allegations which, in the age of the internet, can circumnavigate the globe in a matter of seconds.”

Yasser Arafat Body Exhumed

The body of Yasser Arafat, the former Palestinian leader has been exhumed to try to establish whether or not he was poisoned. Experts took samples from Mr Arafat’s remains as part of a fresh inquiry into his death in November 2004, aged 75, after a sudden, unexpected, deterioration in his health. A murder inquiry was launched in France earlier this year when tests carried out by a Swiss institute found traces of the lethal radioactive substance polonium-210 on his clothing. Polonium-210 is the substance that was used to assassinate the former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in London six years ago. It is usually only found in medical or military environments. Mr Arafat’s tomb in the West Bank city of Ramallah was opened for just a few hours on Tuesday for tests carried out by Swiss, French and Russian experts. A reburi-

al ceremony with full military honours was held later the same day. Tawfik Tirawi, the former Palestinian intelligence chief leading the investigation, said: “November 27 will be one of the most painful days of my life for personal reasons as well as patriotic, political and religious ones. But it is necessary in order to get the truth behind Yasser Arafat’s death.” Palestinian officials have remained convinced Mr Arafat was poisoned by Israel although Israel deny the allegations. Mr Tirawi said: “As patriotic Palestinians, we remain convinced that the Israelis assassinated President Arafat, and at the inquiry level, we have evidence leading in this direction.” There has been continued speculation about Mr Arafat’s death. He died at a military hospital outside Paris after being moved there from his West Bank compound. French doctors said at the time that he had suffered a brain haemorrhage but, at his widow’s request, no postmortem was carried out.

The French authorities launched an official murder inquiry in August but some medical experts in France

have already cast doubt on the poisoning theory. Marcel Francis-Kahn, the former chief of rheumatology at Par-

is’s Bichat hospital, said: “The hypothesis of polonium does not stand up to scrutiny.” He explained that Mr Arafat suf-

fered no traditional symptoms of radiation poisoning such as hair loss and a notable drop in white blood cells.

ployees managing to escape to an adjacent building. Eight workers are said to have been injured due to heavy smoke inhalation. The fire came as clothing workers staged a mass protest at their working conditions following the country’s worst ever factory blaze over the weekend, in which at least 112 people are thought to have died. Survivors of Saturday night’s fire joined several thousand colleagues blocking a road during a march in Ashulia, on the outskirts of Dhaka, with some protesters throwing stones at one factory. They are angry at poor labour conditions and overcrowding in the factories as well as the lack of enforce-

ment of safety laws. Locked fire doors are said to be commonplace. Workplace fires in the region have now killed more than 600 employees in Bangladesh’s booming clothing

industry since 2006, according to the Clean Clothes Campaign, an Amsterdam-based textile rights group. But none of the owners have so far faced prosecution for poor safety conditions.

Fire fighters battled for several hours to contain the blaze on Saturday, with witnesses describing how desperate workers, most of them women, cried for help and several leaped to their

deaths from upper floors as they tried to escape. Bangladesh has around 4,500 clothing factories and is the world’s second biggest exporter of clothing making up 80% of its annual exports.

Bangladesh Double Disaster

There has been a second fire at a multi-storey clothes factory in Dhaka, just two days after over 100 people were killed in a blaze in a nine-storey building owned by Tazreen Fashions in the Bangladeshi capital. The latest fire at the 11-storey building, housing three garment factories, in the suburb of Uttara sparked fresh scenes of panic as workers rushed to safety. It caused widespread damage but there were no reports of deaths, with em-

Dinah Sheridan Dies

A

ctress Dinah Sheridan, star of The Railway Children, has died aged 92, peacefully at her home in Northwood. Although she was considered quintessentially English due to her elegance and quiet beauty, she was actually born Dinah Nadyejda Ginsburg in Hampstead in 1920 to a Russian father and German mother, photographers to the Royal Family.

She landed her first stage role at the age of 12 and went on to tour as Wendy in Peter Pan, with Charles Laughton as Captain Hook. Her film break came shortly after when she appeared in Irish And Proud of It (1938) until her momentum was interrupted by the Second World War. In 1983 she made a guest appearance in the television series Doctor Who as the Time

Lady, Chancellor Flavia. The Railway Children, an adaptation of E Nesbit’s 1906 novel in which three children and their mother are forced to swap Edwardian city luxury for rural poverty, was her greatest known role. Ms Sheridan played the role of the children’s mother, Mrs Waterbury; the film also starred Jenny Agutter, Sally Thomsett and Bernard Cribbins. The film re-

ceived widespread critical acclaim when it was released in 1970. A British Film Institute survey said it was one of the greatest British films ever made. Ms Thomsett, who played daughter Phyllis, paid tribute to Ms Sheridan on Twitter: “RIP Dinah Sheridan, my beautiful mother in The Railway Children Xxxxxx”. Ms Sheridan was married

four times. First to actor Jimmy Hanley in 1942, with whom she had three children, then to business executive John Davis in 1954, then to actor John Merivale in 1986 and to Aubrey Ison in 1992. Her son, Jeremy Hanley, became an accountant and Conservative Party politician, and her daughter, Jenny Hanley, became an actress and a co-presenter of the hit British television series Magpie.

Super-Pensioner Fake

Bond

Alfred Throop, said he felt like he was in a “scene from James Bond” as he took control of a runaway bus after the driver fell unconscious. The 67-year-old, who has not driven for 12 years, grabbed the wheel and managed to manoeuvre the bus around cars and pedestrians and turn it to the side of the road, where it hit metal railings and finally stopped.

Mr Throop was preparing to get off the Arriva bus at his stop in Northfields, Leicester, when it began to swerve and hit a van. The retired hospital porter said: “I noticed he was slowing down and swerving a bit, so I went to ask the driver if he was okay but he didn’t respond. Then I saw he had passed out. I was looking for the brake but I couldn’t find a way to get to it so I grabbed the wheel and steered it away from the cars and the peo-

ple and turned it to the kerb.” Leicestershire police have praised his bravery during the incident on Thursday. A spokeswoman said: “Thanks to Mr Throop’s brave actions; he managed to prevent further damage and any serious injury to members of the public.” Mr Throop’s wife, Sylvia, 72, said: “He did a wonderful job, but he’s like that. If he sees someone needing help when we’re out, he always stops to lend a hand.”

An advert for a James Bond with a licence to kill has appeared on an official Government website. The spoof appealed for a ‘target elimination specialist’ was posted on the Department for Work and Pensions’ Directgov.co.uk website, apparently on behalf of MI6. The advert said that the Government had, from time to time, “a need to remove people whose continued ex-

istence poses a risk to the effective conduct of public order”. Potential candidates were told they would need to be “resourceful in finding ways to accomplish their missions and, in some cases, to leave foreign countries by non-conventional means”. It went on to promise that the successful applicant would receive equipment such as special watches, mini-submarines and Bond’s signature gun, the Walther PPK. The stated salary was £50,000-£60,000, but it was suggested that bonus-

es would be paid following successful missions. It added that the job, which had the reference number 007, would be “appropriate for those who like their martinis shaken and not stirred”. Unfortunately for wouldbe spies, a spokesperson for MI6 has confirmed the advert was indeed a fake and the Government was not looking to recruit a killer. She added that while it was not yet clear how the ad got onto the site, external employers are able to post potential openings on it. It has now been removed.

Corporate Tax row

SMALL, family run businesses could benefit from the public uproar over low rates of corporation tax paid by global giants Starbucks, Amazon and Google. The backlash was prompted by the revelations that Starbucks has paid just £8.6m uK corporation tax in the past 13 years, even though they made sales of £3.1bn, when most other businesses will pay a corporation tax rate of 24% this year. In 2011, Google paid just

£6m tax against sales of £395m, while Amazon paid no tax at all in the UK their sale reached £3.3bn. Matthew Stych, research director at analysts Planet Retail, believes British retailers can make the most of the row by highlighting their own contributions and good practices. “It’s a golden opportunity that comes along once in a decade, to really capitalise on the negative publicity that some global retailers are receiving at the moment,” he says. “I think it’s a huge opportunity that independent retailers in the community must seize now”. But other analysts are not convinced such consumer campaigns will have any long-

term benefit. “We’re unlikely to see any massive dip in the sales of these companies under scrutiny,” says Douglas McNeill, chief analyst at Charles Stanley. “Whilst ethical issues can temporarily make people pause for thought, consumers make their choices on the basis of eternal basics of price, quality and convenience.” Mr Stych says large brands may yet find a way to turn around the negative publicity. “As far as Amazon and Starbucks are concerned, I think there’s an opportunity to strike a more conciliatory note,” according to Mr Stych. “This is for them also an ideal opportunity to regain or reforge that bond with local consumers”.

naked man in Whitehall

A SeCTIon of Whitehall was closed off after a naked man was seen straddling a statue. Scotland Yard said it was believed that the man might have a knife as officers shut down part of the road, near the heart of Westminster in central London.

Whitehall runs from Trafalgar Square and is where a number of government departments are based, including the Ministry of Defence.

He was seen straddling the head of the statue of Prince George, the Duke of Cambridge, before climbing up to stand on it. Police cordoned

off a section of around 100m and several police cars and ambulances were on the scene. Crowds of onlookers had gathered at either end of the cordon. The naked man is believed to have been clothed when he climbed on to the statue. He could be seen waving his arms, apparently speaking to emergency services on the ground.

“Black Friday” Shopping Madness I t is one of the lesser known American traditions, but it is making its way over to the U.K. Some of the UK’s biggest retailers are cashing in on the so called Black Friday sales, traditionally launched the day after Thanksgiving, where millions of frenzied shoppers make the most of discounted prices. Amazon, Asda and Apple were among the companies that launched so-called Black Friday sales in Britain - despite many of their customers being unaware of the custom. In the US, thousands of stores discount their prices the day after Thanksgiving, and many open for longer hours. Last year a record number of people visited stores over the Black Friday weekend. They spent a total of £32.6 billion, an average of around £250 each, according to figures from the National Retail Federation. Some eager shoppers were caught on camera phones battling to get to the best bargains first, after queuing for hours. Many retailers opened their stores at midnight, and this year the trend to open at 8pm on Thursday started to spread. The shift was denounced by some store employees and traditionalists as encouraging people away from their fami-

lies on Thanksgiving, many welcomed the chance to shop before midnight. “I think it’s better earlier. People are crazier later at midnight,” hotel worker Renee Ruhl, 52, said as she shopped at a Target store in Orlando, Florida. Online retailer Amazon was one of the first companies to bring the trend to the UK. It launched a week-long Black Friday sale, which it claims

“offers millions of pounds of savings on hundreds of Christmas gifts”. Techy giants Apple and Asda, owned by Walmart, also made the most of the Christmas shopping rush by offering oneday discounts of their own. Hotel Chocolat emailed their customers saying that as it offered their US customers 20% off it would do the same for UK buyers.

Hatton Retires Again! Ricky Hatton’s return to the ring once again ended in defeat after he was knocked out in the ninth round by a body shot from former champion Vyacheslav Senchenko. Hatton, 34, was back in the ring for the first time since 2009 after an embarrassing second-round knockout by Manny Pacquiao. Hatton started aggressively but as the fight went on the Ukrainian landed several power shots which took

their toll in the eighth round as his momentum built. Then Hatton was floored in the ninth by a left punch to the body which sent him crashing to the floor. The crowd screamed at him to get up but he was in too much agony so referee Victor Loughlin stopped the fight with eight seconds left in the round. Hatton was hoping to prove something to himself, his critics and his demons after seeing his life fall to pieces since the Pacquiao loss. After the fight an emotional Hatton said he was retiring from boxing for a second time. “I needed one more fight to see if I had still

got it - and I haven’t. I found out tonight it isn’t there no more. I can look at myself in the mirror and tell myself I did my best, but there is always an excuse to find. I got in the best shape I possibly could but if I hadn’t been hit with that body shot I would have just scraped over the line with a points win and I honestly think I would still be telling you all the same thing. A fighter knows and I know it isn’t there any-more. I got the opportunity and I got the answers and, no matter how upsetting it is, I have got to be a man and say it is the end of Ricky Hatton.”

“There are more retailers launching sales this year than ever before - and many British consumers are becoming aware of the tradition for the first time,” said Retail Week’s Gemma Goldfingle. “In the US, it is an absolute phenomenon, people queue up all night to get the best deals.” In Orlando one family camped outside a Best Buy shop for a full week, sleep-

ing in two tents. “It has not reached that level in the UK and whether it ever will is another matter,” Ms Goldfingle said. She said that Americans have Thanksgiving to kickstart the event, whereas in the UK it is just a normal day. Boxing Day, when UK sales traditionally begin, is a normal work day for Americans. “A lot of British retailers would prefer not to have

it,” Ms Goldfingle said. “They want to be selling items at full price ahead of Christmas, especially given the tough economic conditions.” Black Friday, which is thought to refer to the first day of the year that retailers go “into the black”, comes just ahead of Cyber Monday which the marketing industry claims is the busiest day in the online shopping calendar.

He was the Pied Piper of life and brought joy to everyone he knew. He was creative, funny, loving and talented, and I will miss him enormously.” LArrY KInG said: “Larry Hagman was a dear man who had an incredible career. He helped me to stop smoking. He was a very special person.” PIerS MorGAn wrote: “Very sad to hear that Larry Hagman has died. His J R Ewing character was the greatest TV villain of them all. Wonderful actor.”

The infamous, seemingly unstoppable J.r. ewing has died. Larry hagman, who starred in the hit TV series Dallas as the scheming oil baron has lost his battle with cancer aged 81. hagman had suffered from liver cancer and cirrhosis of the liver in the 1990’s as a result of his well-documented drink addiction. One of the best paid actors who had been in the business for decades he will always be remembered for his role as the conniving J.R. Ewing. Dallas actually premiered on the US station CBS back in 1978, and it made Hagman a superstar. The show quickly became one of the network’s top-rated programmes; it built an international following seen in 90 countries and inspired a spin-off, imitators and a much heralded revival in

2012. He was the only actor to appear in all 357 episodes. The show made Hagman a fortune; however, he lost some of it in bad oil investments before turning to real estate. In July 1995, he was diagnosed with liver cancer, which led him to give up a long standing smoking habit, and a month later he underwent a liver transplant. Hagman said he quit drinking the moment doctors told him he had cirrhosis of the liver and could die within six months. Hagman was born in Weatherford, Texas; his father was a lawyer who dealt with the Texas oil barons Hagman would later portray. His mother was the stage and movie star Mary Martin. Hagman’s parents divorced in 1936, when he was five years old. He lived with his grandmother in Texas and California while his mother became a contract player with Paramount in 1938 and occasionally

After leaving the Air Force in 1956, Hagman returned to New York City where he appeared in the Off-Broadway play Once Around the Block, followed by nearly a year in James Lee’s play Career. His Broadway debut occurred in 1958 in Comes a Day. He then appeared in four other Broadway hits, God and Kate Murphy, The Nervous Set, The Warm Peninsula and The Beauty Part.

Dallas reunion During this period, Hagman also appeared in numerous, mostly live, television programmes, and aged 25, Hagman made his television debut on an episode of Decoy. In 1958, he joined Barbara Bain as a guest star in the short-lived series Harbourmaster. Hagman joined the cast of The Edge of Night in 1961 as Ed Gibson, and stayed for two years. In 1964, he made his film debut in Ensign Pulver, featuring a young Jack Nicholson. In the same year, Hagman also appeared in Fail-Safe, opposite Henry Fonda. He also had supporting roles in the films JFK and Nixon. In 1967, musician and friend David Crosby introduced Hagman to LSD after a concert, he later said “LSD was such a profound experience in my life that it changed my pattern of life and my way of thinking and I could not exclude it.” Hagman was given marijuana by Jack Nicholson, as a safer alternative to Hagman’s heavy drinking. “I liked it because it was fun, it made me feel good, and I never had a hangover.” He explained, “Marijuana is like being compared to alcohol and when you come right down to it, alcohol destroys your body and makes you do violent things, but with grass, you just sit back and enjoy life.” In his later years, Hagman became an advocate for organ transplants and an antismoking campaigner. He also was devoted to solar energy, telling the New York Times he had a $750,000 solar panel system at his Ojai estate, and made a commercial in which he portrayed a J R Ewing who had forsaken oil for solar power. He was also a long time member of the Peace and Freedom Party, a minor leftist organisation in California. He had an eccentric streak. When he first met actress Lauren Bacall, he licked her arm because he had been told she did not like to be touched and he was known for leading parades on the Malibu beach and showing up at a grocery store in a gorilla suit. In 1982, Hagman crowned the winner of the Miss Sweden competition in Stockholm. During the coronation, he wore a traditional Lapphatt and sang a Swedish folksong. To paraphrase Barbara Eden, who starred with him in I Dream Of Jeannie said “There will never be anyone like you again.”

fourTeen people have been confirmed dead after a workshop for people with disabilities in Germany was suffered a fire. At least six other people were injured in the blaze, which happened in the small town of Titisee-neustadt in south West Germany. Karl-Heinz Schmid, a spokesman for police in the nearby city of Freiburg, told local news channel N24: “We can tell you that we have 14 dead. The process of identification is ongoing. We also have a large number of injured who have been taken to hospital,” said Mr Schmid, adding it was too early to determine how serious the injuries were. The fire broke out at around 2pm local time (1pm GMT) and had still not been extinguished nearly two hours later. Around 100 fire fighters battled the flames. The authorities have so far been unable to determine the cause of the fire at the workshop, which employs 120 people with either men-

tal or physical disabilities in a variety of jobs including metalwork, woodwork and electrical installation. Local news agency

DPA quoted a source as saying there had been an explosion in a storage room. It is still unclear whether

chemicals were stored in the room, but the workshop activities include the treatment of wood.

Several people were helped out of the building by fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus, according to Focus

magazine. The centre in the Black Forest region is run by the Catholic Church’s Caritas organisation.

PAPAYA SALAD

I’ve just returned yet again from ‘The Land of Smiles’ so it felt right to include something that I always indulge in whilst over there! Quite often whilst relaxing in the afternoon on the beach, this wonderful beach seller would be there, serving the most wonderful Papaya Salad.

This green papaya salad, also known as “som tam”, is popular the world over, more so in Thailand, and when you taste it you’ll know why. The slightly tart flavour of the green papaya combines wonderfully with the spice of red chili and the saltiness of fish sauce and the sweetness of honey. Green papaya salad is a beautifully unique and flavour-filled dish that will make a great impression. It’s also easy to make, low-calorie, and very nutritious. InGreDIenTS: 1 small green papaya 1/2 cup roasted peanuts or cashews 2 cups bean sprouts 1 to 2 tomatoes cut into thin wedges or long strips 3 spring onions cut into long matchstick-like pieces 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves left whole or chopped Handful of fresh coriander 1 red chili, sliced, seeds removed 1 cup blanched green beans (optional) Cooked baby shrimp (optional) DreSSInG: 1/2 tsp. shrimp paste 2 Tbsp. good-tasting vegetable oil 2 Tbsp. soy sauce 3 Tbsp. lime juice 1/2 to 1 Tbsp. liquid honey, to taste 1/8 to 1/4 tsp. chili flakes or cayenne pepper, to taste

MeThoD: Stir all ‘Dressing’ ingredients together in a cup. Make sure shrimp paste and dissolve the honey fully. Taste-test for sweetness, and spice, adding more honey or chili to taste. Set aside. Use a sharp knife to peel the green papaya, then slice it in half and use a spoon to scrape out the seeds. Using the largest grater you have, grate the papaya, or you can use a potato peeler to create thin, ribbon-like strips. Place in a large bowl. Add sliced tomato, spring onion, chili/cayenne, bean sprouts, green beans (if using), prawns (if using) and most of the basil. Pour over the dressing, tossing well to combine. Add nuts and toss again. Taste-test the salad. If not sweet enough, add a little more honey or a sprinkling of sugar. If not flavourful enough, add a little more soy sauce. If too sweet or salty, add more lime juice. Add more chili for a spicier salad. To serve, scoop into individual bowls or onto serving plates. Top with remaining basil leaves plus fresh coriander and a sprinkling of more nuts. Serve immediately and ENJOY hInTS TIPS Try using baby shrimps instead of prawns or even Tofu for the vegetarian option! If you can obtain it, why not use fish sauce instead of soy sauce?

SHARPLES IN SESSION By John Sharples

Telly rant

As you will have seen, elsewhere in the Tenerife Weekly, Larry hagman has died. People have a habit of dying and I find it quite worrying that there are less and less entertainment icons around. These days, people are famous for five minutes. After their moment of fame, they disappear forever as a new face takes over. There is very little variety entertainment on the television. We hardly ever see a magician or good stand-up comedian. Truly great singers are rare and most television personalities have little or no comic ability. I wish that Shirley Bassey would come out of semi-retirement, that Paul O’Grady would resurrect Lily Savage, that Angus Deayton was still the presenter of Have I got news for you and that people would stop banging on about Bruce Forsyth being too old. He has the top show on British television. Why should he bow out gracefully and let someone else ruin a perfectly good programme. The people running British Television don’t seem to know how to make a good variety show

anymore. The Royal Variety Performance is just a stream of pop acts with a juggler and a bloke who is introduced as a comedian, tells one joke and gets back in his taxi. The public school laddies that put the show together have absolutely no idea about entertainment. The show used to go out on live T.V. We were treated to the whole thing, nowadays it is edited down into a tidy hour and a half and all the best bits are taken out. As the numbers of true celebrities decline, we will be treated to Big Brother contestants in “I’m a celebrity get me out of here” and ex x-factor contestants dancing on Strictly Come Dancing. Where will it all end. The people at the top say that people’s tastes have changed. I totally disagree. Coronation Street rumbles on, unstoppable on its cobbles as millions of people tune in to it every week. It’s been going for 52 years and shows no sign of ending. People’s tastes haven’t changed. People love variety, they love to laugh and more than that, they love to see someone talented that they know and love on the box.

DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE FAMOUS? Dear Lord NO! I’m known I suppose in certain circles because of what I do which can be good and bad. I had a slight taste of what others could call fame, but it’s not for me at all. ALTHOUGH YOU ARE IN THE LIMELIGHT, DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE SHY? I enjoy just being with just my family to be honest. It seems ridiculous to be on radio and when off it I find it seriously hard to communicate with others. Some have classed it as painfully shy, and the haters would call it arrogant and stand offish. I guess I would be classed as shy if

nicole loses An Act

Judge and mentor to the boys this year on the Xfactor, the gorgeous ex “pussycat doll” nicole Scherzinger ended her perfect score on the show last weekend by losing her first act, (although being as she lost rylan and her category is the boys......technically doesn’t she still have all her boys???) Rylan was voted off in the sing off between him and Louis’s last remaining act, boy-band Union J, by Judge Tulisa, who has no remaining acts and admitted it was hard for her to vote off Rylan, saying later on The Xtra Factor “I love Rylan to bits, he’s a really good guy and he has put up with a lot of stick throughout this competition. He’s got a good heart, pure soul and he’s never done any wrong.” Nicole is still in pole position-as her boyfriend Lewis Hamilton might say, with 2 of the hot favourites, Jahmene and James Arthur under her guidance, they will sing in the semis this weekend against Union J and amazingly, Gary Barlow’s karaoke king Christopher Maloney (how????), so who do YOU think should win? Nicole has certainly livened up this year’s Xfactor with her scenestealing outfits and verbal sparring with “ Gary Borelow” about camp as Christmas but not the best vocalist, Rylan, but it’s her daft as a box of frogs comments that made her so watchableand probably the reason she’s rumoured to have already been asked to return next year!

THROUGH THE KEYHOLE By Colin Haydon

wonderfully designed detached Villa torviscas alto

Clear Blue Skies Group SL in fañabé is one of Tenerife largest and most successful estate Agencies. run by a British family, they have a number of nationalities which means that in this office, many languages are spoken including Spanish, english, french, German, Italian and flemish.

This lovely detached villa is around five years old, and represents the ideal combination of being beautifully appointed, in a great location and superb value for money. Rarely an Estate Agent visits a property which seems perfect in every way, but if there is a flaw in this lovely property, we have yet to find it. The area of Torviscas Alto has always been a favourite one for residents and semi residents alike. Quiet, yet only a couple of minutes drive from the beaches, bars and restaurants of Costa Adeje. The TF1 motorway is two minutes away, as is the Grand

Sur shopping complex and the Colegio Costa Adeje, one of the highest regarded multi national schools in the South of Tenerife. This property is set back from the main road, making it totally safe for children, yet instantly accesses the thoroughfare, and has been handsomely finished, with gentle colours which are reflected in the internal decor. Externally, there are large areas of terrace and garden around and adjacent to the large heated pool, providing lots of room for those barbeques and sunny evenings watching the sun set over La Gomera. The plot size is a generous 560m². Internally, the lounge is spacious, with doors to the terrace, which allows the external and internal areas to fuse as one, creating a further feeling of width. It is beautifully furnished, in common with the whole property. The kitchen is fully fitted as you would expect in a house of this standard, with a wide array of floor and wall units and appliances. On this level there is one further room,

a large double bedroom, which presently doubles as an office, with an en suite bathroom and fitted wardrobes. Below there is a private garage (with room for another 3 cars to park as well) and a large TV lounge, easily convertible into a cinema room or a games room, whatever the new owner prefers. On the upper level are two more bedrooms, both large double bedrooms, with en suite’s and fitted wardrobes, all of course furnished to the highest possible standard. This property has been intelligently priced to represent superb value in the present market place, and for anyone with this budget, is a must view property. All of the internal and external furnishings are included in the sale price, and we feel sure that this will sell quickly in the present market. If you love good taste, and you love quality, you won’t be able to resist the temptations of this beautiful property.

Priced to sell at 695,000 euros

CALDERS CONFESSIONS By Calder Jon

Calder spent twelve years working as PA and Co-presenter with Jeremy Kyle on various radio stations, he is now a Freelance Radio Presenter where he answers listeners´dilemmas each Sunday night on the airwaves. We are also very grateful to have him here, answering your questions and queries as part of the Tenerife Weekly team.

CAn’T forGIVe DAD…. Between the ages of 8 and 9 my stepmother physically abused me. It only stopped when I was taken into care. I’m sure my dad was aware of what she was doing and did nothing to help. My dad is now very sick but I find it hard to feel any sympathy for him as I still feel so betrayed by his behaviour all that time ago. Is that wrong? Gaynor, 41

I don’t think you can ever describe the way you feel about anything as “wrong”. What your father did to you is unforgivable and I think you have

every right to leave him to cope with this illness on his own. The passage of time doesn’t change what he did at all in fact my view is that he’s lucky you are even considering him in the first place. You only get one shot at this life and forcing yourself to do something that you clearly don’t want

to do definitely isn’t the way to go. Take some time out to think about your feelings and what you really want to do, if anything, to help your dad. Ultimately, once you’ve made your mind up about what you want to do and why, you’ll only have yourself to answer to.

I’ve been with my new partner for a year now and while everything between us is great, his ex-wife is ruining our relationship. She’s always calling him and asking for his

Why Cant I Love?

Since splitting with my husband 9 years ago I have found it hard to love another man. I have a boyfriend now and have been with him for about a year but I don’t really feel anything for him, and the sex is so boring. He’s a good bloke, who loves me but I just don’t seem to be able to feel emotion for anyone anymore. Tasha, 33

Don’t let your past cloud your vison Tasha. This guy just may not be the right one for you. Maybe he just doesn’t turn you on enough or isn’t as passionate as you’d like? Whatever the case, you owe it to yourself to be happy and content rather than stuck slap bang in the middle of a relationship that’s unfulfilling.

www.eyelashes-for-cars.com

I’m not suggesting you throw the towel in right away and start looking for your next bloke though! Its certainly worth opening up the lines of communication and explaining to this guy exactly how you feel. We can all be guilty of settling down and taking our eye off the ball at times and perhaps a gentle reminder that you need more attention and excitement could be the wake up call he needs. Don’t let this go and just accept second best. Have the conversation, be honest about how you feel and what you need from this relationship. If thing’s are the same a few months down the line then it’s probably time to walk away.

help with her problems. Why is she still so involved in her life? I’d really prefer it if they didn’t speak at all.

Helen, 35 Have you tried talking to your boyfriend

about this rather than just bottling it all up? Some people are able to come to the end of a relationship and remain friends whereas others find that pretty much impossible.

So long as this is just a friendship and nothing else is involved then you have to accept it I’m afraid. Of course, your bloke should be constantly reassuring you that everything is above board and making sure that despite helping out the ex, he is paying you enough attention. Have the conversation with him and explain that you’re not comfortable with things the way they are. If he immediately get defensive then maybe he does have something to hide but don’t go into the conversation thinking that from the outset!

My Dream has Become A nightmare..

I’ve just started a new job and I hate it. I had a job that I enjoyed, but got offered a job as a photographer which has always been my dream career. The people that I work with are horrible and I don’t really enjoy the work. I feel like if I quit I’ll have given up on my lifelong dream. What shall I do? Kerry, 23

As you seem to have discovered, dreams are often a whole lot better than reality. Who knows? Given a different time, place and set of people, you may well love being a photographer? The fact is, this obviously isn’t the right time or place and hanging on just to stay true to your dream isn’t going to change that.

The only way forwards is to put this one down to experience and to move on to the next challenge. You’re only 23 and you have literally years ahead of you to discover exactly what it is that makes you happy in terms of work. Don’t look upon this as a failure or weakness, its an experience and you need to learn from it. The alternative is to sit and fester in your current job, becoming more and more miserable. Now, that really would be an end to your dream, in fact, it sounds like it would be a nightmare. Look around and see what else you fancy doing until the perfect job in photography does come along.

THE SPORTS SCENE By Colin Kirby

defensive horrors Cause First Cd Tenerife defeat

Brave or stupid? After coming from behind twice CD Tenerife pushed up for an injury time winner at Sporting B but no one stayed back to mind the shop and Guerrero condemned them to a 3-2 defeat. It summed up a game of poor defending that began in the 12th minute with Tarantino rooted to the spot as Moises gave the home side the lead from a sharp pass. Tenerife hit back quickly as right back Moyano raced forward and crossed into a crowd of players, the ball spilled loose and Aridane drove it into the net. There should have been a second

goal for Aridane on the half hour, he had the goal at his mercy but found the feet of the home keeper. Sporting relied on quick breaks, Bustos out jumped Bruno for a header that inched wide and Guerrero shook off his markers but missed the target. Suso looked the pick of the Tenerife players, a neat back heel set Raul Llorente up for a go at goal but he put it in the side netting. Sporting increased their lead when the Tenerife defence opened up leaving an easy task for Santi Jara after 59 minutes. It might have got worse, Sergio Aragoneses made a good save with his foot and another chance hit the bar and bounced over. Suso set Aridane up for another clear chance but

again he hardly made the goalie break sweat. The equalizer was a bit special; Moyano latched onto a half clearance and volleyed the ball into the roof of the net. Two more great saves followed from Sergio, Loro blasted wide from sub Nico and his fellow subs Yeray and Jeremy both showed good touches but a draw and a huge sigh of relief seemed the best option. It was agonizing to see Guerrero free to head for the Tenerife goal as the seconds ticked away, Bruno scampered back but it was too little too late as Sporting took the spoils. Rivals results added a silver lining to this losing cloud, keeping CD Tenerife in top spot and ready to get back on track at home to third placed Real Oviedo this Sunday at noon.

White night, Yellow Joy For CB Canarias

Saturday night was more than alright as CB Canarias demolished Lagun Aro 93-78 with a solid team show in front of a 3,826 home crowd. Lagun are also in the lower reaches of basketballs ACB League so it was vital to beat them to start to climb the table. All the big guns hit form as CB Canarias won

the first three quarters to establish a commanding lead before a late fight back from the visitors. Levi Rost was outstanding with 22 points and got good support from Nico Richotti on 15 points and Ricardo Uriz with 13. The next two games are away but confidence was lifted leaving fans and players to enjoy the local “White Night” celebrations in the streets of La Laguna.

AnoTher home defeat, this time 1-3 to Caudal, marked the end of CD Marino coach Willy Barroso as his team returned to last place in Segunda B. The new man brought in to stop the rot is Jose Juan Almeida from Gran Canaria who has experience with Universidad Las Palmas, Fuerteventura, and Vecindario. Barroso has been associated with CD Marino for 22 years as a player and manager and offered his resignation a few weeks ago but was asked to carry on. President Pepe Barrios said he made the sacking “with much pain in my heart, Willy is 100% CD Marino but this is our only option to look for salvation”.

Injuries again hampered the departing coach’s quest for points, with goal scorer Balduino sidelined and fellow marksman Noah being eased back from the subs bench it was down to Sandro and Adan to start the attack. Caudal had the ball in the net after seven minutes but it was ruled offside, 2 minutes later Pevida found the target and this time it stood. The rain and the problems started to pour, Muni was carried off with an achilles tendon injury that could mean 2 months out and just before half time Navarro made it 0-2. Just after the break Noah came on for Rayco and he sparked a reply from Darias with his first goal of the season. It was a brief respite, Richard restored the

two goal lead and that’s how it stayed. This Sunday the new era begins at Leganes.

astro-barilina’s twisted horoscopes Aquarius 20 January - 18 February

You are disgusted with yourself this week as yet again you miss an opportunity to put things right between yourself and your lover. But in good news you find some chewing gum you thought you’d eaten.

Pisces 19 February - 20 March

Oooh, you lucky, lucky person. It’s pretty amazing really that all this luck, romance and love are going to grab you by the hand and say “This is all for you, enjoy!” The odds are that you’ll see something that you physically and desperately desire. However, it is similarly likely that you will fall flat on your bum trying to achieve it.

Aries 21 March - 19 April

There are definitely drawbacks to all your best laid plans. Be aware that this week might not be your lucky week. You will be full of computer related mishaps. Hope in your heart is all well and good but you know deep down inside that when your computer crashes, it will not have automatically saved the document you’d been working on for the past four hours.

Taurus 20 April - 20 May

Can you be held responsible for everything you don’t do? Who knows? If you don’t wear glasses now, the chances are that you’re going to need to after an upcoming sports accident. Laughter will help you, especially if you want to avoid crying.

Gemini 21 May - 21 June

As the fella once said, ain’t that a kick in the head. Not that you’ll be kicked in the head, it’s a metaphor. So maybe just wear a helmet for the rest of the week. Watch out for overweight dogs when it’s raining. The odds against surviving this without any of your limbs is low.

Cancer 22 June - 22 July

You might feel “world weary”, but the truth of it is that you don’t do anything worthwhile. This week may be a good opportunity for you to change that. This week is not your lucky week. It’s the following one instead! So that’s something to look forward to whilst your picking up your teeth with your broken arm.

Leo 23 July - 22 August

All this week you are set for uncontrollable setbacks to all your plans. There’s nothing you can do, so you might as well start being awful to people you suspect might cause your setbacks. Do what you feel is right in your heart.

Virgo 23 August - 22 September

If you don’t care what the weatherman says when the weatherman says it’s raining - that’s great! All the colours in the rainbow will come out to play on other people’s faces. You may be diagnosed with flu at some point this week.

Libra 23 September - 23 October

When asked to perform in a successful jazz band, consider all your options before accepting. Artefacts’ that appear on your eyeballs are an after-effect of going out on the razzle for 4 nights running.

Scorpio 24 October - 21 November

Everything you have to fear comes from within. You should have chosen the korma instead of the vindaloo. Giraffes are one of nature’s most bizarre creatures. Whilst this may seem like a “fact” out of the blue, you’ll soon see the relevance over the coming fortnight.

Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December

Overspending will find you slightly less well-off this week. Good luck is not what you need right now. You could do with the services of a made-up superhero called “Miracle boy”.

Capricorn 22 December - 19 January

Placing your mouth around the exhaust of a car stuck in traffic is bound to cause more traffic problems. Please take into consideration the needs of others. My gift to you is this wisdom: he who makes love at awkward angle, gets back problems for next day.
