Tenerife Weekly - 7th December - 13th December 2012
I have started a new section in the Tenerife Weekly called “What to do if”. We are lucky that we have a very good relationship with consulate staff in Santa Cruz and thought it would be useful to build up a section for information about what to do in certain situations. I will be taking a different situation every week covering everything from accidents to lost or stolen passports and what to do if you are arrested. This week the section is what to do if you are a victim of crime and what exactly the consulate can do to help you. I know that you will find this information helpful; there are times where
people think they know what needs to be done, but more often than not, it is more like misinformation. Many of you may remember that, back in June, Vivo held a street party in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. We had the most amazing raffle and one of the prizes was a cruise, very kindly donated by Thomson Cruises. Friends of Vivo Kelly and Shabba, from Los Gigantes were the extremely happy winners. They finally had their cruise and kept us all in stitches by posting photographs and comments on Facebook. Now you can read all about their antics on pages 30 and 31. Enjoy! Christmas is literally just around

The Duchess of Cambridge was discharged from hospital on Thursday after a stay of three days for treatment. Kate, who is less than 12 weeks pregnant, left King Edward VII Hospital, where she had been admitted after being diagnosed with hyperemesis gravidarum, sever morning sickness. She left with Prince William and was taken to their London home, Kensington Palace, to rest. However her hospital stay was not without controversy, prank callers managed to trick hospital staff treating the Duchess
of Cambridge into revealing detailed information about her condition. Australian radio DJs impersonating the Queen and Prince of Wales and were given an update about Kate, who was admitted to London’s King Edward VII on Monday.

Mel Greig and Michael Christian called from Sydney’s 2Day FM radio station and were transferred to a duty nurse who divulged details of how doctors were treating the duchess. The hospital said it “deplored” the stunt and will be conducting a review of its phone system. St James’s Palace declined to comment on the incident. A spokesman for the hospital said: “King Edward VII’s Hospital Sister Agnes can confirm that an Australian radio station made a hoax call to the hospital in the early hours of Tuesday morning. This call was transferred through to a ward and a short conversation was held with one of the nursing staff. King Edward VII’s Hospital deeply regrets this incident.” John Lofthouse, chief executive at King Edward VII’s Hos-

the corner and many of us want to be able to join in the spectacular events that the various councils have organised. Due to space restrictions it is difficult to print absolutely everything that is going on, but this week I have covered both San Miguel and Arona events. If you know of anything going on and you want to let people know about it, drop me a line so I can print it for you. I am particularly interested in anything with a charity angle, perhaps you have a carol concert you would like to publicise. Do let me know.
See you all next week,
Lorna Eade pital, said: “This was a foolish prank call that we all deplore. We take patient confidentiality extremely seriously and we are now reviewing our telephone protocols.” Michael Christian posted congratulatory Tweets and reports of the prank from around the world on his Twitter page. He tweeted: “Can’t believe we got put through!” The DJs and their radio station have since apologised - saying the hosts had “the best intentions”. Mel Greig and Michael Christian said: “We were very surprised that our call was put through, we thought we’d be hung up on as soon as they heard our terrible accents. “We’re very sorry if we’ve caused any issues and we’re glad to hear that Kate is doing well.” In a statement, 2Day FM said: “2Day FM sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused by the inquiry to Kate’s hospital, the radio segment was done with the best intentions and we wish Kate and her family all the best.” Knowingly or recklessly obtaining personal information without consent is an offence under Section 55 of Data Protection Act 1998, punishable by a fine of up to £5,000. The Duchess of Cambridge is “continuing to feel better” and she and the Duke are immensely grateful for the good wishes they have received, St James’s Palace has said. Prince William visited his wife every day during her hospital stay. The statement from the Palace came shortly after the Duke of Cambridge left the private hospital where Kate was being treated for a severe form of morning
The royal couple are likely to be cheered by news from the Government that legislation to ensure their baby becomes monarch - whether it is a boy or a girl - is to be introduced as “rapidly” as possible. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said it is “a wonderful coincidence” that the 15 nations where the Queen is head of state gave their final consent for the Government to press ahead with a landmark Bill to end the centuriesold discrimination against royal women at the same time as Kate’s pregnancy was announced. Mr Clegg tweeted: “Whether the Duke and Duchess’ baby is a boy or a girl, they will have an equal claim to the throne.” Moves towards constitutional change gathered pace in the wake of the Duke and Duchess’s wedding in April 2011 in anticipation they would produce an offspring. The child will be third in line to the throne, after Prince Charles and Prince William. While there remains concern for the royal couple, there is much excitement across the UK, indeed the world at the prospect of a royal baby.
Sister Pippa visits Kate sickness after revealing her pregnancy on Monday. William spent most of this week at the bedside of his wife, who is likely to be on a drip so she can receive fluids intravenously to combat the effects of dehydration caused by the condition known as hyperemesis gravidarum. Her illness could indicate she is having twins as mothers carrying two babies have a greater chance of developing the severe morning sickness. Kate was admitted to hospital on Monday after developing the condition that can leave patients feeling tired, dizzy and suffering from headaches - all signs of
dehydration. It appears she responded well to treatment and is likely to be having less severe bouts of morning sickness. The Queen’s former gynaecologist Marcus Setchell, who delivered the Countess of Wessex’s two children, is reported to be treating her. Kate’s diary of engagements for this week has been cancelled to allow for the extensive rest she will need from now on. The prolonged vomiting could continue for much of her pregnancy - which is still below 12 weeks - and she may need to take anti-sickness medication for months to come.

Tenerife Weekly - 7th December - 13th December 2012
NEWS ON THE ROCK
Guardia Civil in Icod de los Vinos, arrested three people, aged 23, 31 and 36, all residents of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, accused of thirteen robberies committed in businesses in the town. The robberies took place in various companies and businesses including shops, sports shops, clothes, a pharmacy, and a dental clinic. The offenses began on 21 November, as the robberies escalated; cameras were set up to enable the police to identify the thieves. Santiago del Teide is to allow residents in the area to pay their IBIs (rates) by instalments. Payments will be able to be made in months 2, 4, 7, and 10 of 2013, and the Ayuntamiento says that they will not charge interest. Those who want to take up the offer have to apply by the 15th of this month at the Consorcio de Tributos in Santiago del Teide: the office is at 3 Calle Caleta de Jurado, and is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 9am and 1pm October’s fall in unemployment figures appears to have been a blip. November’s figures show a further 1,212 out of work, leaving 289,032 unemployed in the Canary Islands as a whole. Of those, around 124,000 are beyond the end of their unemployment benefit, and indeed beyond the end of any additional help whatsoever. The figures mean that 43.04% of the unemployed are without any income at all. The moratorium on tourist licences was renewed in April until 13 December in order to give the Government time to get the new Canarian Touristic Law into place. It was thought that there was insufficient time, and on Tuesday the Government acknowledged this by agreeing to extend the moratorium to 31 May next year, giving an extra five months for the new legislation to be studied and approved. The new extension avoids the tourism regulation vacuum that would otherwise have existed between the end of the moratorium and the introduction of the new law. “helping hands in Tenerife” Children’s Charity are looking for volunteers to pack shopping bags at the Iceland Store in Las Chafiras every Friday and Saturday leading up to Christmas in the hope for donations from the grateful shoppers. If you have a spare hour and would be interested in supporting a very worthy cause please call Elizabeth Montague on 661 274 281. Iceland have also agreed to collect presents for children. They have allocated shopping trolleys for the collection and ask that anyone with suitable gifts, deliver them, unwrapped at their shops in Los Cristianos, Las Americas and Las Chafiras on Saturday. The best fiestas on Tenerife in December It’s no surprise to learn that the best fiestas on Tenerife in December have a Christmas theme. Christmas Eve itself is a bit of a non-event unless you’re part of a Canarian family. The Spanish enjoy their big Christmas meal on Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) and as a result many restaurants (including those in hotels) close early. Those staying in one of the south of Tenerife’s purpose built resorts won’t really be affected but anyone staying in Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Cruz, La Orotava etc. should make sure they eat early. New Year’s Eve (Nochevieja) is party night and the traditional north holds the best street parties and firework displays although there are places in the south of the island which hold decent Nochevieja shindigs as well. Tenerife’s Christmas Eve falls on the 5th of January when Los Reyes Magos ride into town bestowing gifts on well behaved children. There are parades in towns across Tenerife. Christmas in Puerto de la Cruz As always, Puerto de la Cruz overdoses on the Christmas spirit at this time of year with classical, jazz and folklore concerts, an exhibition of belenes (from the 8th) and all sorts of activities throughout December including a beer festival (22nd) as well as the wonderful New Year’s Eve party at Plaza del Charco. Loads of Information about what is going on, who is going to be where and all the information you need about Christmas and local fiestas, Check out www.theRealTenerife. com Page and get up to the minute info to make your arrangements.

WHAT TO DO IF….
Welcome to a new series for Tenerife Weekly. We all, residents and tourists alike, get ourselves into various situations that require immediate attention. Whilst there are many, many, several do-gooders who think they know exactly what you need to do if certain events occur, we have Caroline Sproule, direct from the Consulates Office telling you exactly what it is you need to know and do.
If You Are A Victim Of A Crime
What the Consulate can do to help: • Give general information about local police and legal procedures • Point you in the right direction of where to get legal advice • If you need medical treatment, we can help you to contact a local doctor • If you want us to, we can contact your relatives and friends to let them know if something has happened to you. You should consider appointing a local lawyer who can look after your interests in court, and follow any trial for you. We can give you a list of local English-speaking lawyers and interpreters. We would not normally attend a court case involving a British national. What the Consulate cannot do: • Give you legal advice • Collect evidence or investigate crimes. In many countries investigating authorities and the courts may refuse to answer enquiries from other people
and organisations, including consular staff • Influence the outcome of any trial • Assist with travel costs if you are asked to attend a trial abroad as a victim or witness • Provide general financial help • Accept items of lost or recovered stolen property, with the exception of passports (which are cancelled and returned to the Identity & Passport Service) and driving licences (which are returned to DVLA). If you are a victim of theft: • Report any incidences of theft to the local police. You will need a police statement to claim against your travel insurance • Remember to cancel any credit cards or travellers cheques. We have also produced a leaflet called victims of crime abroad which is available from www.fco.gov.uk/resources/en/pdf/2855621/ victims-of-crime-abroad.pdf which offers more detailed information.

RYAnAIR is threatening to cut flights to and from Spain because of the sky-high airport taxes, threatening thousands of jobs. Taxes make up around 40% of ticket costs for the airline’s Madrid and Barcelona flights, therefore making routes
unprofitable for the largest carrier in Spain.
The 14 aircraft it operates to the country will be reduced to ten, meaning far fewer cheap holiday flights available from the UK next summer. The cuts, which will save Ryanair £20million, will mean the loss of 4,500 jobs, more than doubling the forecast by Michael
O’Leary four months ago. Most of the jobs will be lost in Spain where airport taxes are four times those elsewhere in Europe. Ryanair vice-president Michael Cawley criticised slammed Spain’s “totally unnecessary airport expansions”. He added: “We cannot operate these flight paths when it means our costs will double.”

Murder Irishman To Appeal Conviction
Keith Burke , aged 21 faces at least 15 years in prison after being found guilty last week of stabbing Abraham Baez, aged 24 in the neck with a kitchen knife during a street brawl. His lawyer said the “devastated” Dubliner maintains his innocence and will appeal. Mr Baez died from massive blood loss after being knifed during a 6am fight in Playa de las Americas on April 30, 2010. A jury unanimously found Burke guilty of murder. Burkes lawyer, Avelino Miguez, pointed out none of the witnesses to the fight saw his client carrying a knife or stabbing Mr Baez. Police found no traces of the Spaniard’s blood on Burke’s clothes; even though doctors said he would have lost at least half a litre of blood a minute after his carotid
artery was severed by the knife. Crucially, the jury accepted prosecution claims Burke hid the knife in the palm of his hand, with the blade protruding between his fingers, as he attacked Mr Baez. That allowed them to convict the Irishman of murder rather than the lesser charge of manslaughter. But a pathologist told the court the wound to Mr Baez’s neck was caused by the knife being held in a normal, downward, stabbing motion. The lawyer also hopes to employ a little-used law to have his client sentenced as a minor, even though he was 18 at the time of the killing. Burke’s family say they fear for his safety at the prison in Tenerife where he is being held. During the one-week trial, his lawyers complained to the court after people in the public gallery were seen making a throat-slitting gesture at the defendant. A family friend said: “We’re ter-
rified what might happen to Keith while he’s in prison.” His ex-girlfriend Sara Stuart aged 30, also from Dublin, was found guilty of wound-
ing the dead man’s girlfriend, Laura Negrin, during the same fight. She is expected to get a suspended sentence after being cleared of
the more serious charge of wounding her with a rock. Outside court, Mr Baez’s family said they were satisfied justice had been done.
Mother Maria Teresa said: “Nothing will bring my beautiful son Abraham back, but we came here to see justice and justice has been done.

Mencey Hotel Disability Failures
The Mencey Hotel, part of the Iberostar chain does not comply with disabled access laws, despite spending 45 million euros on a recent refurbishment and a reopening on November 11th. So says the Mobility Association. Drawbacks in the 5 star hotel include limited wheelchair access, reception counters at the wrong height, which makes it difficult for wheelchair users, corridors that are extremely long and without hand rails, making it difficult for disabled guests to enjoy their stay. President of the association, Ana Mengibar says that of all the hotel bedrooms only five had larger doorways and bathrooms that had been adapted for disabled users. There were no cranes to be able to move people from beds to chairs, and vice versa, and the beds had not been adapted for wheelchair users with regards to height. There is also far too much furniture in the rooms
leaving little space for wheelchairs to turn about easily. The terrace for theses rooms also has a step making it impossible for wheelchair users to get out onto it. Air conditioning units are the wrong height for wheelchair users, making it impossible to control the temperature of the room, and lockers had handles at the wrong height. The Association also criticised the alarm system as it only uses sound making it impossible to warn any deaf guests of the threat of fire. All of these shortcomings showed that the hotel “Did not have the slightest interest in ensuring accessibility in this hotel”. The director of the hotel Mencey, Daniel Cañibano, said that of the many deficiencies “had already been remedied”, and had been when the President of the Association visited the facilities. He did not rule out redressing some other issues in relation to rooms and public areas and said he would submit a study in relation to the reception area. Solutions already implemented by Iberostar also included “A new elevator to avoid people with disabilities having to continue using a forklift from the kitchen, as they had done previ-
ously. The Mobility Association indicated that disabled guests are very impor-
tant for the economy of the capital and the whole of the island; therefore it is important that routes are
maintained to maintain accessibility and to encourage hoteliers to adapt their establishments accordingly.

cadora on the front near the harbour, and of course there will be the traditional and hugely popular parade of the three Kings from the ferry on 5 January.
Red Cross are helping 165 people with AIDS in Tenerife who do not have family or friends or the economic resources to support themselves. Data revealed on World AIDS Day, December 1st, warns that the number of HIV infections amongst young Canarians is on the increase, mainly due to information about the disease being watered down and youngsters having unprotected sex. To commemorate the day, Red Cross volunteers
took to the streets to deliver information to people. At a checkpoint in the Plaza de La Candelaria, the Red Cross and HIV positive workers (Pades) spent the morning informing passers-by the consequences of disease. Yazmina Caraballo, a social worker, explained that her work supporting the 165 patients includes accompanying and advising them during their visits to the doctor, and to tell them where to go to receive help. Some medications needed by her patients are not even included in the coverage of Social Security.” Red Cross volunteers
also attend schools to deliver informative talks. “This service reaches approximately 2,000 people across the province and about 1,500 have had unprotected sex”, warns Julio Castañeda, responsible for the programme for the Sexual Education in The Spanish Red Cross. According to the latest figures available, there are around 2,500 new AIDS infections recorded every day throughout Spain. “This is not a problem that can be ignored, there is misinformation available and people have become overconfident”, warned the Red Cross spokesmen.

Brother and Sister Fraudsters
SIBLInGS Lawrence Candlish and Melanie Batey from Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, wrongly thought they could outsmart investigators when they moved to Alicante in 2005 and 2007 respectively, and failed to notify benefit officials. Despite Candlish winning a £5.5 million lottery jackpot in 1997 and opening a bar and restaurant in the Santa Pola area of the Alicante region, they both continued to fraudulently claim benefits until December 2010 when their dishonest actions finally caught up with them.
Between them they had falsely claimed over £40,000 which they will now have to pay back to the UK government. Candlish appeared in court in October and was sentenced to nine months in prison, suspended for 18 months with supervision. His sister Melanie Batey received the same sentence. Frauds like these contin-
ue to happen. If you have heard someone boasting about ripping off the British taxpayer, if you know a neighbour who’s living off benefits they shouldn’t have, if you feel fed up and want something done about it, it’s easier than ever to report a suspected benefit thief. Work & Pensions investigators are asking anyone who suspects others of committing benefit fraud to call the free and confidential hotline in Spain on 900 554 440, or send in their concerns at https://secure. dwp.gov.uk/benefitfraud/. In addition there is now an online form from the Department of Work and Pensions at www.dwp.gov.uk/ benefit-thieves-spain or https://secure.dwp.gov.uk/ benefitfraud/spain/ The only request from benefit investigators is that you provide as much information as you can. The more you give, no matter how insignificant it may seem, the easier it is to trace the fraudster and the more likely it is that they will be caught. Details that are particularly useful include the suspect’s full name and addresses in
the UK and Spain. But just as useful are details of their spouse or partner, and information about any work they do. Remember that all the information you give will
be treated in strictest confidence. You do not have to give your own name and address if you do not wish to. The new online form is just one way investigators are
closing in on benefit fraudsters in Spain. A dedicated team continues to work closely with the Spanish authorities, making it harder and harder for benefit
thieves to go undetected. If you want more information on which benefits can and cannot be claimed whilst living in Spain, do visit www.gov.uk.

Paralympians March Against Spending Cuts Spanish Paralympians joined over 15,000 disabled persons on crutches and in wheelchairs for a march against spending cuts which threaten the collapse of the social security system for them and their families. In the lead was the award-winning Olympic champion Teresa Perales.
The 15,000 took up the call for nation-wide protest on December 2 by the Spanish Committee of Representatives of Persons with Disabilities (CERMI), which gathered together over 7,000 associations. Under the slogan ‘’SOS Disabled - Save Inclusion and Health’’, it was the first mass protest to speak out against the ‘’unsustainable situation’’ which the crisis has sparked for one of society’s most vulnerable groups. At least 300 buses brought the disabled to Madrid for the march, which coincided with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. There was also a march in
the Valencian Community, 15 social workers who work in the disabled sector marched for 200 km over nine days to protest the cuts and the non-payment of benefits. The march ended in the Valencia Parliament, but protestors were evicted from the parliamentary chambers by the President of the Cortes, Juan Cotino. Regional administrations owe the sector at least 250 million euros and the local ones two years of arrears totalling 50 million euros, reported CERMI president Luis Cayo Perez Bueno. The 300 million euros covers costs for subsidised services, subsidies and aid in the form of wages for special centres employing disabled workers, in which half of the minimum wage of every worker is paid for by the administration. In a meeting between CERMI representatives and the Finance and Healthcare Ministers, Cristobal Montoro and Ana Mato, the government pledged to include subsidies for assistance to the disabled in the financing of the Liquidity Fund for the Autonomous Communities (FLA), which re-
ceived 18 billion this year and which will receive 23 billion next year. ‘’Twenty per cent of centres which help the disabled are at risk of imminent clo-
in Cartagena. So far, experts have counted 574,553 silver coins and 212 gold coins, as well as other items. The metals were mined and the coins minted in the Andes, from places that are now in Bolivia, Chile and Peru. Spanish officials say that they have no plans or ever intend to sell the treasure. “It’s invaluable,” Elisa de Cabo, the culture ministry’s deputy director of national heritage, said according to the Associated Press. “How
would you put a price on the Mona Lisa?” Obtaining the ship’s haul was the culmination of a long legal fight. Ms de Cabo said Spanish authorities are still trying to convince a US judge that the American company that found the wreck, Florida-based Odyssey Marine Exploration, should also pay Spain’s legal costs. The company has stated that it had spent $2.6m salvaging, transporting, storing and conserving the treasure.
sure,’’ said Perez Bueno. In part this is also an effect of the shutting down of the ‘’social works’’ department of Spain’s savings and loans institute, which accounted for
20% of funding to the sector. The shutting down of centres for the disabled threatens to have a knock-on effect on jobs, which are already scarce for this community. In
Spain there are an estimated 3.8 million disabled, although those between the age of 16 and 64 whose disability has been officially certified number only 1.18 million.
Spanish Treasure Legal Win
The Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes galleon sank off Portugal’s coast near the straits of Gibraltar in 1804 with more than 500,000 silver coins. And now Spain has won a five-year legal dispute to claim ownership for the treasures found by a US company. Spanish authorities have revealed only a small portion of the treasure, estimated to be worth 385m euros has been displayed. A block of encrusted silver coins stuck together after centuries under water, two gold tobacco boxes and a bronze pulley were among some of the items shown. When it has been fully catalogued, a process which began when the treasure arrived from Florida in February, the silver treasure will be displayed in Spain’s museum of underwater archaeology

Pro Franco victims Finally Laid To Rest
FInALLY, after 76 years, 28 people who were executed by pro-Franco forces during Spain’s civil war have been laid to rest by their relatives after being thrown into a mass grave.
Associations for victims of the people executed in the village of Cortes de la Frontera in Andalucia, southern Spain, had exhumed them from the grave and laid their remains in boxes in a newly built cemetery. The 21 men and seven women were shot dead by the soldiers fighting for Francisco Franco, who went on to defeat the Republican side in the 1936-1939 war and set up a dictatorship in Spain. They were the first bodies to be exhumed from what is estimated to be hundreds of people tortured and executed on the El Marrufo estate, where, say campaigners, hundreds of families had fled to as Franco’s troops advanced. “It is not just about giving a proper grave to the 28 people whose remains we recovered,” said Andres Rebolledo, president of an as-
sociation representing local families of those killed by Franco’s side. “It is also an act of recognition of their struggle and of the democratic values for which they fought and died,” he said, in a statement. They are only 28 people, but they symbolise all the victims of the Francoist terror in Andalusia.” Campaigners say about 114,000 bodies of people killed during the civil war and Franco’s ensuing fourdecade rule are believed to be in unidentified in mass graves around Spain.

Spain Boiler Fraud Arrests Ten British nationals were among 22 people arrested in Spain as part of an investigation into an organised crime group believed to be responsible for defrauding hundreds of victims of over eight million Euros. The multi-agency investigation led by the Spanish National Police and supported by the Serious Organised Crime Agency and City of London Police, also resulted in the seizure of four firearms, ammunition and 367,000 Euros. Officers believe that members of the crime group operated a boiler room fraud in which intensive telephone campaigns were carried out to persuade over 200 members of the British public to put their savings into invest-
ment packages that did not exist. During searches of addresses in Barcelona and other Catalan provinces, officers also recovered seven false UK passports, numerous computers, hard drives, USB sticks, mobile telephones, lists of potential clients and manuals on how to get people to part with their money. Ian Milne, SOCA’s Head of Operations in Europe, said: “Working with partners to protect members of the public is a priority for SOCA. We believe this organised crime group was running a sophisticated and complex boiler room fraud. Shutting it down has put a stop to more members of the public being duped into parting with their hard earned cash.” Det Supt Tony Crampton, from City of London Police, said: “Investment fraud is all too often a crime created
abroad to target people back here in the UK, with the vulnerable members of society being most at risk. In order to get to grips with this criminality and target the fraudsters who feel they are operating outside the law, it is necessary to develop international alliances between law enforcement and counter fraud agencies. “This successful operation in Spain provides further evidence of how these partnerships are now delivering the sort of results that should make organised crime gangs think twice before starting their criminal enterprise.” The Spanish National Police believe that the crime group was made up of various selfgoverning sub-groups, with each one specialising in an aspect of the defrauding process. They also believe that the head of each subgroup communicated solely
with the leader to avoid being traced to other members of the organisation. Enquiries have revealed that the alleged perpetrators used false identification documents, travelled constantly,
changed addresses regularly, and used the name of a nonprofit making company to open current accounts with various banks. The 22 people have been charged with being part of
an organised crime group, as well as with fraud offences. Five of the British nationals were remanded in custody and the others were released on bail. As yet, no names or ages have been released.
Spain will not make the usual end-of-year review to adjust pensions for 2012 inflation, the government has reported in an effort to meet deficit goals that hits around 9 million retired people. The government has broken an electoral campaign pledge which said it would instead raise pensions by 1 to 2% in 2013 and tap reserve funds to ease liquidity tensions around pension payments. Spain’s fiscal situation left no choice over the decision as meeting a 2012 deficit target of 6.3% of output was the top priority for Spanish authorities. “It was a difficult, painful decision because it was the last thing we wanted to do, but we had no other choice,” Labour Minister Fatima Banez said at a news conference following the weekly cabinet meeting. The move was unexpected as Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy had said earlier this year that he would protect pensions, the only remaining campaign promise he had not been forced to break as Spain was dragged into the centre of the euro zone debt crisis. When Reuters revealed the government was considering not applying the inflation-
linked review this year, Rajoy at first ruled it out, then said since September that it would be the last thing he would do to balance public finances. Under Spanish law, pensions should be reviewed each year in line with inflation data, which came out at 2.9%. By not applying the rule, the government will save around 3.8 billion euros and keep its EUagreed deficit target within reach. “This responsible decision will enable Spain to meet its deficit target, an indispensable objective to make sure Spain can access funding, exit the crisis and come back to growth,” the government said in a statement. As announced in September, all state pensions will rise by 1% in January 2013, while pensioners who receive less than 1,000 euros a month will get an extra 1% increase. This will add just 1.5 billion euros to the 2013 budget. The
government has also passed a new law to unlock a pension’s reserve fund and increase by 4.3 billion euros the capital buffer available to pay pension cheques. The fund, which was set up in 1997, was used for the first time this year but the government has already tapped the maximum available amount allowed per year. Ministers had been divided on whether or not to touch the pensions because of the blow to Spain’s around 9 million retired people. But by doing so, Spain will please its European Union partners and the European Central Bank, which is opposed to inflationlinked reviews of pensions and wages. Spain is so far on-track to meet its year-end deficit target but analysts report that local finances and higher costs for the social security system could derail Spain’s efforts.
Expats living in Majorca will soon be able to enjoy cheap flights back to Heathrow as Spain’s second largest carrier, Vueling launches a new route. The low cost airline is launching the Palma Majorca to Heathrow in March 2013 in time for the summer season.
The last airline to offer this route was UK-based budget carrier Bmi in 2009. Not only will the new route from the UK’s largest airport make it easier for expats to reach their Majorcan homes but it will boost the local property market. Vueling is also launching other routes between the UK and Spain. It plans to start low-cost flights between Gatwick and Barcelona, and from Cardiff
to Malaga, scheduled for next year. Alex Cruz, the chief executive of Vueling, said: “The Heathrow route is going to be hugely welcomed by the strong expat community and together with the introduction of Gatwick-Barcelona flights, also commencing at the end of March, our expanded services from the UK capital form a key part of what will be a fourth consecutive year of growth.”

OvERSEAS BuyERS ON THE uP
A STuDY conducted by hiFX Property hotspots has revealed that property buyers interested in buying are finding real estate in Spain worthy of investment for the first time in years. The current economic crisis is overlooked when potential buyers consider making a move for Spanish properties. The report revealed that many first-time investors from the uK are interested in purchasing properties abroad despite the crisis in the eurozone. Around 20 per cent of these investors have expressed their interest in Spain. The director of HiFX Property Hotspots, Mark Bodega said that Spain still remains popular among the British nationals who are looking to make the most of quality properties at lower prices. He added that the prime factor responsible for the rise in interest from foreign investors was the fact that
average property prices in Spain had dropped by more than 12 per cent during the past twelve months alone. First-time investors have the opportunity to snap up properties in prime areas for discounted prices. The current state of Spain’s property market appeals mostly to first-time buyers as bargain hunters were left disappointed on many occasions in the past. While investment opportunities are great in Central Spain, beach resort properties can also be purchased for reasonable prices. If conditions remain the same for the foreseeable future, it is estimated that UK will account for around 35 per cent of the foreign buyers within the next few years. Properties in small cities and towns can be bought for bargain prices. But it is Spain’s capital Madrid that is in many investors’ sights. People who are looking at capturing Spain’s mid-term potential for growth are considering buying real estate in Madrid. Although the current economic state of the city does not look great, it is still considered as a fine cultural haven. In
addition, some areas still attract a huge demand from overseas investors. Property prices in Madrid have hit rock bottom. Daniel Talavera who works with Spanish Brick, a property firm, explained that if buyers are waiting for a fur-
ther fall in prices in prime locations, this is not likely to happen in a few locations in the capital. That apart, even Barcelona and Valencia may not see further price reductions. Madrid’s city districts of Retiro and Salamanca feature sta-
ble prices due to high demand. Steady investment is a guarantee if you consider property hunting in these areas, he says. Property firms are advising buyers to up their budgets by around 20 per cent, should they seek proper-
ties in these locations. If you’re looking for low-price property, Spain’s coastal areas are the most attractive as great deals can be struck and a large number of tourists will ensure good investment through holiday rentals.

Spain Bank Bailout Confirmed Spain has officially requested an EU bailout worth 39.5bn euro for four of its struggling banks. Almost all of the money will go to the nationalised Bankia, Catalunya Banc, NCG Banco and Banco de Valencia. The news comes as figures reveal that Spain now has 5 million unemployed residents. The European Commission approved plans to release the capital to the beleaguered sector which suffered heavy losses on loans to home buy-
ers and property developers when its property bubble burst. In September official figures from the Bank of Spain showed that 10.7% of total banks’ balance sheets were made up of “doubtful debtors”, those whose loans may not be repaid. From July to September 29.7% of all bankruptcies were companies in the construction sector. But as millions of homes lie empty or unfinished, more than 350,000 people have been evicted since the 2008 property crash. Spain’s government and banking body, the Asociacion Espanola De Banca reacted
quickly announcing a moratorium on evictions for the most vulnerable. But campaigners fear foreclosures already under way will still go ahead. Ada Colau, a spokesperson for PAH, a pressure group for those affected told a local paper: “The moratorium will not help the hundreds of thousands of families who have foreclosure proceedings against them already under way.” Halting repossessions is bad news for the already flailing banking sector. Last week ratings agency Moody’s said banks’ financial positions would be weakened by the concessions. And this
may continue to impact how much banks can support local businesses which are key to the country’s recovery, forcing them to borrow from
elsewhere. Fernando Cara Ruiz, a hair salon owner in Granada told Sky News: “We have to put more and more on credit be-
cause the banks can’t give us money. Things are very slow so we have to reinvent ourselves and think to tomorrow, not to today.”
Oldest World’s Tallest Woman Dies Woman Dies Yao Defen, the world’s tallest woman has died at the age of 40 at her home in eastern China. She was officially given the title by the Guinness World Records in 2010 when she measured 7ft 8in.
Besse Cooper, listed as the world’s oldest person has died in a US nursing home at the age of 116. She died peacefully on Tuesday afternoon in Monroe, east of Atlanta, Georgia, according to her son Sidney Cooper. He said his mother had been ill over the weekend with a stomach virus but felt better on Monday. On Tuesday he said she had her hair set and watched a Christmas video but later had trouble breathing. He said she was put on oxygen in her room and died there about 2pm. Her funeral is likely to be held this week, her son said. Mrs Cooper was declared the world’s oldest person in January. She was born on August 26, 1896. In May, though, Guinness World Records learned that Maria Gomes Valentin of Brazil was 48 days older. She died on June 21.
The title of oldest living person now passes to 115-year-old Dina Manfredini from Johnston in Iowa. She was born in Italy in 1897 and moved to the
United States in 1920. The oldest person ever recorded was Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who died in 1997 at the age of 122 years and 164 days.
“Yao Defen died in the middle of last month,” says a spokesman for the government of Shucha town, where Yao lived. Yao’s gigantism was reportedly due to a tumour in her pituitary gland but the cause of death is unclear, the spokesman explained. An Anhui newspaper reported that Yao died on November 13, having reached a height of 7ft 9in, adding that she was already more than two metres tall at the age of 15. Yao is recorded as the third tallest woman in history, only five inches shorter than Zeng Jinlian the tallest woman ever who measured 8ft 1.75in.

The End Of The World Prediction Aussie Style
Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard has predicted the end of the world in a spoof video for a radio station. The 50 second address shows the Prime Minister confirming doomsayers are right, and the apocalypse will hit this month. Looking serious and speaking directly into camera, she says: “My dear remaining fellow Australians, the end of the world is coming.” In the tongue-in-cheek video she goes on to reference Korean pop music, the predicted crashing of computer systems at the turn of the millennium and also Australia’s recent controversial carbon tax legislation: “It wasn’t Y2K, it wasn’t even the carbon price. It turns out the Mayan calendar was true.” Ms Gillard says that while scientists can’t confirm the news, she is confident that alternative radio station Triple J’s prediction is correct. “Whether the final blow comes from flesh-eating zombies, demonic hell beasts or from the total tri-
umph of K-Pop, if you know one thing about me, it’s this: I will always fight for you to the very end,” she says with a straight face, standing at a lectern and flanked by two Australian flags. She ends the joke broadcast on a positive note, mentioning that the apocalypse means she can escape having to appear on a weekly Australian current affairs show: “... at least this means I won’t have to do Q&A again. “Good luck to you all,” she quips. According to the Mayan calendar the world will end on December 21 which represents the end of a cycle in the Mayan long count calendar that began in the year 3114 before Christ. A doomsday industry has boomed in Hollywood around the notion that the calendar’s end will bring the fiery end of human civilisation, with the blockbuster “2012” depicting Earth being swallowed by floods, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The Mayan culture enjoyed a golden age between 250 AD and 900 AD in present-day Mexico and Central America, before its steady decline and the arrival of Spanish imperialists
in the 16th century. It was not revealed how the radio station persuaded the Prime Minister to take part in the joke or whether she
contributed to its writing. Reaction has been mixed. Supporters of the joke like writer and broadcaster Paul Verhoeven took to Twitter
End Of An Era
The final printed edition of The Dandy has gone on sale as it marks its 75th anniversary. The publication will now only be available as an online-only publication from now on. Britain’s longest-running comic will now be available to download online, and as a smartphone and tablet app. Dundee-based publisher DC Thompson announced in August that the weekly children’s comic would make the transition into cyberspace following dwindling sales in recent years. During its peak circulation in the 1950s, the Dandy sold two million copies each week. This figure has dropped in recent years to around 8,000.
The last issue features a cameo from Sir Paul McCartney, who said in 1963 it was his ambition to appear in the comic, and a pull-out of the first issue from December 4, 1937. The website will feature old favourites Desperate Dan, Bananaman and Korky the Cat in new animated strips, featuring voice overs and sound effects. Users will also be able to play interactive games, watch videos and create their very own virtual pet. David Bain, the comic’s head of digital development, said: “The Dandy is alive and well, and it’s going to continue as usual. It’s just as of next week it’s going to be available online on a regular basis, with all the famous characters and scripts and storylines and humour, as
well as games, goodies and interactivity. It’s all about fun, humour and a bit of mischief, a bit of pranking.” Ellis Watson, chief executive of DC Thompson, said: “I appreciate it’s almost a deliberately naive venture into the unknown for a publisher that’s been cutting down trees for 75 years, squishing them flat and smearing ink all over them. We’re not super slick, we’re not Silicon Valley, but what we are is some pretty talented animators and storytellers that are really excited about seeing if we can introduce these wonderful characters to another couple of generations.” The first online issue will be free of charge, with following issues being priced at £1.49. A yearly subscription for the digital comic will be £29.99.
to say the video was “astoundingly wonderful”. Others however, like Australian radio host Neil Mitchell, asked: “Is it demeaning to
the office (of Prime Minister) to be doing something quite as silly as that, particularly when it’s presented in quite a serious fashion?”

vIRGIN WIN BACk CONTRACT
Virgin Trains says it has reached an agreement to operate services on the West Coast Main Line for the next 23 months. It comes after an embarrassing u-turn by the Department for Transport (DfT), which admitted it got its sums wrong after initially awarding the franchise to rival FirstGroup. Sir Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin, who had
described the bidding process as “insane” and mounted a legal challenge against the government, was delighted by the decision. He said: “It has been a long journey to get to this point but we won’t be resting on our laurels and intend to keep improving services for our loyal customers. “Our lawyers said we had a less than 10% chance of winning after the Government originally awarded the franchise to FirstGroup. One of the key things we have learned from
this episode is to never give up if you think right is on your side. This is a perfect early Christmas present for our wonderful Virgin Trains staff and customers. Onwards and upwards in 2013 and beyond.” Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin said: “We are determined to ensure not only those passengers continue to experience the same levels of service they have in the past, but that services improve. There will be a new hourly service linking Glasgow and
London and we will also work with Virgin Trains to explore other service improvements.” Virgin have said there will be up to 28,000 more seats each day on the line because of the delivery of 106 new Pendolino carriages. The temporary deal will run from December 9 until November 9 2014, after which the West Coast line will be let under a long-term franchise. DfT will be able to cut the 23-month period short “by up to six months if a subsequent franchise can be let on a shorter
timescale”, the Government added. Three DfT officials were suspended after the bidding process was scrapped and Virgin was expected to be given the go-ahead to run the line for between nine and 13 months. Those suspensions have now been lifted, the department said. The new deal will see Virgin run the line on a temporary basis for far longer but does not involve an interim franchise as all existing bid processes were
suspended pending the findings of an independent inquiry into the franchise system ordered by Mr McLoughlin. The investigation, led by Centrica chief executive Sam Laidlaw, produced damning initial findings which listed a string of failings by the DfT. The full report was published on Thursday, which Mr McLoughlin said made “extremely uncomfortable reading” for the department. “I do not hide from the seriousness of its findings,” he added.

The Earth Never Sleeps
Bogda Mountains China Scientists have revealed a spectacular set of images showing views of Earth at night showing the glow of natural and human-built phenomena in greater detail than ever before. The new images were taken by a Nasa-NOAA satellite that was launched last year. Its sensor, the day-night band of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), is sensitive enough to detect the nocturnal glow produced by Earth’s atmosphere and the light from a single ship in the sea. Unlike a camera that captures a picture in one exposure, the day-night band produces an image by repeatedly
scanning a scene and resolving it as millions of individual pixels. The day-night band observed Hurricane Sandy, illuminated by moonlight, making landfall over New Jersey on the evening of October 29. Night images showed the widespread power outages that left millions in darkness in the wake of the storm. With its night view, VIIRS is able to detect a more complete view of storms and other weather conditions, such as fog.It also pictured the Nile River, a map of the US east coast and the lights from a line of fishing boats. “For all the reasons that we need to see Earth during the day, we also need to see Earth at night,” said Steve Miller, a researcher at NOAA’s Colorado State University Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere.
“Unlike humans, the Earth never sleeps.”

R.I.P Dave Brubeck
World famous jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck has died at the age of 91. He died of heart failure after being taken ill while on his way to a cardiology appointment with his son Darius. Brubeck had a career that spanned almost all American jazz since World War Two.
He formed The Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951, and in November 1954 became the first modern jazz musician to be pictured on the cover of Time magazine. Brubeck helped define the swinging, smoky rhythms of 1950s and ‘60s club jazz. The album Time Out, which was released by the Quartet in 1959, was the first ever million-selling jazz LP, and is still among the best-selling jazz al-
bums of all time. It opens with Blue Rondo A La Turk in 9/8 time - nine beats to the measure instead of the customary two, three or four beats. The album also features Take Five - in 5/4 time - which became the Quartet’s signature theme and even made the Billboard singles chart in 1961. It was composed by Brubeck’s long time saxophonist, Paul Desmond. “When you start out with
goals - mine were to play polytonally and polyrhythmically - you never exhaust that,” Brubeck said in an interview in 1995. “I started doing that in the 1940s. It’s still a challenge to discover what can be done with just those two elements.” Brubeck and his wife, Iola, had five sons and a daughter. Four of his sons - Chris on trombone and electric bass, Dan on drums, Darius on keyboards and Matthew on cello - played with the London Symphony Orchestra in a birthday tribute to Brubeck in December 2000. “We never had a rift,” Chris Brubeck once said of living and playing with his father. “I think music has always been a good communication tool, so we didn’t have a rift. We’ve always had music in common.”

Not The One That We Want
JOhn Travolta and Olivia newton-John have recreated scenes from Grease in a video for their new Christmas album, but it hasn’t gone down well. This time around their singing and dancing has been widely panned and even labelled “creepy” and “odd”. The pair, who starred as Danny and Sandy in the original musical hit, released This Christmas last month
honouring the Travolta’s late son Jett. It is the first time the stars have recorded together in more than 30 years.
TWO fishermen who survived three months lost in Siberia may have eaten their companion. A murder investigation has been launched following the men’s rescue by the River Sutam, 155 miles from the nearest town of neryungri in the federal republic of Yakutia.
The two men have fled the hospital where they were being treated for severe frostbite and are now on the run, according to a report on the lifenews.ru website. Russia has no article in the criminal code for cannibalism, but the state RIA Novosti news agency said the initial theory was that the two men had eaten one companion. It was not clear what happened to the fourth man. “What we found were chopped human bones, fragments of a skull and a blood stained chunk of ice,” an investigator, who was not named, told the Komsomolskaya Pravda tabloid daily. It’s clear that this person did not die of his own accord.” The human remains have yet to be identified. The wife of one of the men, whose remains are missing, named as Andrei Kurochkin from Saratov, said she had not yet given up hope for her husband. Olga Kurochkina said: “The police said that they had found human remains. But I believe that Andrei is alive. I am hoping other hunters have found him and he is
The first single from the album, I Think You Might Like It, was written by John Farrar, who wrote their famous 1978 pop duet You’re the One That I Want. But the Grease-inspired video for their new track has been ridiculed since its release earlier this week. Guardian columnist Sali Hughes
said on Twitter: “This has blown my mind. Oddest video ever.” US radio host Kelly Collis tweeted: “This is the most awkward Christmas Song with Olivia Newton and John Travolta.” New York Magazine’s entertainment section Vulture has published a list called: “Ten Things That Creep Us Out About John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John’s New ‘Music Video”. But the video does have its fans. Emily, who tweets as cpfcrox, said: “I can’t lie, I absolutely love the John Travolta &
Olivia N-J album. It is fantastic. Camp, cheesy and Christmassy, all I need!” Proceeds from the album, which also features Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett and James Taylor as guest artists, are going to charities The Jett Travolta Foundation and the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre in Melbourne. Brian Anthony Hernandez who writes for Mashable said: “The pair’s dance moves in the new music video aren’t very reminiscent of the swagger they ex-
uded as Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsen in Grease, but the good thing is proceeds from This Christmas benefit charities.” The Grease co-stars said they have remained close friends since the 1978 hit, and were delighted to be working together again. “My desire was to make This Christmas an intimate album, not something too ostentatious or showy,” Travolta said. “From the moment we decided to do this, magic happened,” said the US star of Pulp Fiction, Get Shorty and Hairspray.
Newton-John said she was still surprised at the success of Grease, which is about the love affairs of 1950s high school students. “We still have little kids coming up to us who are discovering the movies. It’s like three generations who love the movie, who are going to be thrilled to see Danny and Sandy, as they think of us, together again,” the Australian said. Jett Travolta died in 2009 aged 16 after suffering a seizure and his father said Christmas can be a difficult time for his family.
husband, named as Alexei Gorulenko, could have eaten human flesh - and refuted claims the group were actually gold prospecting. “The
information on the internet that my husband is a cannibal and was looking for gold is not true,” she told local news site wolsk.ru.
Fishermen In Cannibalism Claim
The two were amongst four fishermen who disappeared during an August river-fishing expedition in one of the world’s most remote and inhospitable locations. They claimed their group had split up and the others were likely to still be alive, as they were used to living in the open. But the murder probe was opened after investigators found fragments of a human corpse near the spot where the pair were found. The Yakutia branch of Russia’s Investigative Committee said signs of a violent death had been discovered. “A criminal case into suspected murder has been opened,” it said in a statement.

Praveen Halappanavar has instructed his lawyers to file an application in the European Court of Human Rights over his wife’s death after she was refused an abortion. His wife, Savita, was 17 weeks’ pregnant when she died in Galway University Hospital on October 28, one week after being admitted for severe pain during a miscarriage. Her husband alleges that his wife, who was a dentist, pleaded with doctors to perform a medical termination. He claims doctors denied her requests because a foetal heartbeat was present, telling her: “This is a Catholic country.”
Mrs Halappanavar fell gravely ill after the dead foetus was removed; she then suffered gradual organ failure. A coroner ruled she died from blood poisoning and the contraction of e.coli bacteria. It is understood that if the European Court of Human Rights agrees to hear the case, it would be the first of its kind against the Irish government. Solicitor for Mr Halappanavar’s, Gerard O’Donnell, says there
are issues because a public inquiry has not yet been carried out in Ireland. “The difficulty is that we are seeking a public inquiry and the European court will of course enquire whether we have exhausted remedies here in Ireland first,” he said. The Halappanavar family had earlier warned they would file the application in the court if health minister James Reilly did not agree to hold a public inquiry into the circumstances of her death by the end of the week. Dr Reilly said when he received the reports of two investigations into Mrs Halappanavar’s death he would take whatever action is needed. But Mr Halappanavar is refusing to cooperate with those investigations, and has reiterated his position that he will not settle for anything short of a public inquiry. “Praveen Halap-
panavar being a witness to everything that happened to his wife in hospital would be important for any report,” Mr O’Donnell said. An inquest will also be held in Galway. Mr O’Donnell said the case would
be brought under article two of the European Convention of Human Rights. Under article two a person is entitled to an inquiry that is independent, effective, prompt and open to public scrutiny. They are usually carried out when there is a
state connection to a death, as in a hospital or in custody. The case has reignited debates on abortion in Ireland with the government committed to reforming a limited ban in certain circumstances where there is a risk to the mother’s life.
Unicorn’s Dolphin Bite “Proved” Real
North Korea has stunned the world by announcing that researchers have proved the existence of unicorns. The official state news agency says archaeologists have “reconfirmed” the existence of a “unicorn lair” in Pyongyang, once used by an ancient Korean king. The Korean Central News Agency reported that archaeologists made the extraordinary discovery when they spotted a rectangular rock carved with the words “unicorn lair” 200m from the city’s Yongmyong temple. The report quotes Jo Hui Sung, director of North Korea’s history institute, explaining how the find tallies with information in history books from the 16th century. He said: “Korea’s history books deal with the unicorn, said to be ridden by King Tongmyong, and its lair. The temple served as a relief palace for King Tongmyong, in which there is the lair of his unicorn.” There has been speculation that the report may be a spoof response to the On-
ion’s satirical article declaring that North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un is “the sexiest man alive for 2012”. That article attracted worldwide attention after China’s Communist Party newspaper failed to realise it was a joke and published it as fact. Others have suggested the story has a political aim - to assert the supremacy of North Korea over its more prosperous southern neighbour. It claims that the unicorn discovery “proves” that Pyongyang in the north was “a capital city of Ancient Korea as well as Koguryo Kingdom”. Official news from the totalitarian state, which often features dubious claims
about its scientific achievements, has been met with scepticism in the past. One report claimed that Kim Jong-il shot a 38 under par round of golf, including 11 holes-in-one, on his one and only attempt at the game. The late leader’s official biography claimed that his birth in Baekdu Mountain was prophesied by a swallow and heralded with a double rainbow and a new star in the heavens. A North Korean newspaper also once reported that Kim had invented a new snack that could cure the nation’s hunger problems called “a double bread with meat” - although cynics said the product sounded very similar to a hamburger.
Eight-year-old Jillian Thomas had a lucky escape after a dolphin she was feeding bit her.. She was holding out fish to feed to dolphins at Orlando’s SeaWorld when she got an unexpected surprise. While she was feeding the usually friendly mammals, a dolphin lunged at her and nipped her hand.
The girl, whose parents posted the video on YouTube to make other people aware of the dangers, suffered three small puncture wounds. Her father, Jamie Thomas, told local media the family were angry at the theme park for not warning them of the dangers of dolphin feeding. “We felt powerless,” he said. “We thought, look, we’ve got this video, let’s make it public, and let’s try to put some pressure on SeaWorld to make some changes.”
A SeaWorld statement said: “Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our guests, employees and animals. Educators and animal care staff are always on-site at this area monitoring all interactions and are committed to guest safety.”

NAPOLEON SECRET CODE AuCTIONED A DOCuMenT containing napoleon’s coded order to blow up the Kremlin has been auctioned in France for the extraordinary amount of 186,700 euros, over ten times more than was expected. The single line of numeric code, together with the date; October 20, 1812, and the signature of “nap” in the emperor’s hand, told Paris of his desperate attempt to win victory against the Russians. It reads: “At three o’clock in the morning, on the 22nd I am going to blow up the Kremlin. My cavalry is in tatters, many horses are dying.” By the time authorities in France received the letter three days later, the Russian Czar’s palace was in flames and the French army had retreated. The Napoleon code; used for top-secret letters when the French emperor was away from home, aimed to stop enemies from intercepting French army orders. It
was regularly changed to prevent it from being cracked. Jean-Christophe Chataignier, of Fontainebleau Auction House, said it was unique. “Not only is it all in code, but it’s the first time we see this different Napoleon. He went into Moscow in 1812 at the
height of his power. He returned profoundly weakened. In Moscow, the Russians had fled days before and burnt down the city. There was no victory for Napoleon, nor were there any provisions for his starving, dying army. When he wrote this letter, he
thinks he will be victorious.” In September this year, the Kremlin held huge celebrations 200 years after Russia’s victory over Napoleon, including a re-enactment of the Battle of Borodino, one of the most damaging clashes for Napoleon’s troops.

College Teacher Shot By His Son
James Krumm, aged 56, was killed after his own son shot him in the head by a bow and arrow in front of his students. The British born College teacher was taking a computer science class at Casper College, in Casper, Wyoming, when his son Christopher barged in and shot him using a high-powered bow. The 25-year-old had already stabbed to death his father’s live-in girlfriend Heidi Arnold, a maths teacher aged 42, at their home two miles from the college, she died from multiple stab wounds and was found in the gutter outside her home. Mr Krumm fought with his son during the attack, enabling his students in the classroom to escape to safety. When police arrived at the scene, James Krumm was dead and his son was bleeding from self-inflicted knife wounds, Casper police chief
Chris Walsh said: “I can tell you the courage that was demonstrated by Mr Krumm was absolutely without equal.” Authorities believe six students were in the classroom when the attack took place. Mr Walsh said Christopher Krumm stabbed himself after shooting his father, and then fatally stabbed his father in the chest during a struggle. Police believe he had smuggled the powerful compound bow on to the campus under a blanket, together with two knives. They subsequently carried out a search warrant at Christopher Krumm’s last
known address in Vernon, Connecticut. Andra Charter, a 20-year-old student at the college, said she heard screams outside her biology class. “As we were walking out, there was a girl screaming ‘there’s somebody stabbing Mr Krumm!’” James Krumm, who was born and grew up in the UK but is understood to have left the country by the time he was an adult, was head of the college’s computer science department. The college held a candlelight vigil and memorial service on Tuesday.
Home Alone No More
A home that was left standing in the middle of a busy new road in China after its owners refused to leave has finally been demolished. The owners, duck farmer Luo Baogen and his wife, were the sole inhabitants after the rest of the neighbourhood had been demolished to make way for the road. Builders built the road and the house ended up being surrounded by asphalt with
motorists having to drive around it. The five-storey building was bulldozed on Saturday after the couple finally accepted compensation of 260,000 yuan (30,800 Euros), officials said. Pictures of their home had become an internet sensation in recent weeks and the building was a symbol of resistance by homeowners against officials accused of offering residents unfair compensation to move out. Officials said Mr Luo, tired of the media attention, had consented to the sale voluntarily. “Luo Baogen had dozens of peo-
ple from the media every day and his house stands in the centre of the road. So he decided to demolish the house,” Xiazhangyang village Chief Chen Xuecai said. Once complete, the highway through Xiazhangyang village, on China’s eastern coast, will lead to Wenling railway station, which is served by the country’s super-fast bullet trains. Property has helped drive China’s growth in recent decades, but it has also raised objections from homeowners who have been forced out to make way for new constructions.
Japan Tunnel Disaster Nine people died after being trapped inside their burning vehicle after the Sasago Tunnel collapsed in Japan. Located on the Chuo Expressway, about 80 km west of Tokyo, the tunnel caved in just after 8am local time. CCTV footage from inside the tunnel shows large sections of the roof lying across the road. Several cars were crushed and a fire in the tunnel complicated the rescue effort.
Motorists described their narrow escape from falling debris and a long walk through the darkness after abandoning their cars. “When I was driving in the tunnel, concrete pieces fell down suddenly from the ceiling,” a man in his 30s told public broadcaster NHK. “I saw a crushed car catching fire. I left my car and walked for about an hour to get out of the tunnel.” Aerial footage showed black smoke billowing from the 4.7-km tunnel in Yamanashi prefecture. The fire was extinguished about 11am local time but the rescue and recovery operation was delayed by concerns that there could be further collapses. The cause of the collapse is unclear. There were no reports of earthquakes in the area although there had been suggestions that
a landslide could have contributed to the incident. As earthquakes are frequent in the region, the authorities had access to rescue equipment which proved helpful during the rescue operation. NHK reporter Yoshio Goto, caught in Sunday’s accident, hit the accelerator and managed to drive out. “But it was a bit too late and pieces of ceiling fell on my car. I kept pressing the pedal and managed to get out,” he said. “Then when I looked around, I saw half of the car ceiling was crushed.” It was the worst such accident in Japan since 1996, when a tunnel collapsed and falling rocks crushed cars and a bus, killing 20 people.

Australia Bans Cigarette Branding
Australia is leading the field in anti-smoking laws by stripping all branding and logos from tobacco packaging. From today, Australia is the first country in the world to put all tobacco products in standardised packs which are a drab olive colour and have the manufacturer’s brand in a small, simple uniform font. The packets are also covered in graphic health warnings photographs showing dying cancer sufferers, diseased feet and sick babies. The law bans the use of logos, brand imagery, symbols, other images, colours and any promotional text. Australia’s plain packaging laws are a potential watershed for the global industry, which serves one billion regular smokers, according to World Health Organisation statistics.
Australia’s government says the aim is to stop young people from smoking by stripping out all aspects of glamour. It is relying on studies that show that if people have not started smoking by the age of 26, there is a 99% chance they will never take it up. There are a couple of potential hitches, experts say, one is the popularity of so-
cial media amongst the very people the plan is targeting. After a series of Australian laws banning TV advertising and sports sponsorship and requiring most sellers to hide cigarettes from view, online is the final frontier for tobacco marketing. “If you are a tobacco marketer and you’ve only got this small window left to promote your products, online is the compel-
ling place for you to be in,” said Becky Freeman, a public health researcher at Sydney University. The tobacco industry recently lost a High Court bid to have the legislation stopped. The second hitch is says Scott McIntyre of British American Tobacco Australia, the maker of Winfield cigarettes, the new packs are easier to fake and will boost
black market trade, leading to cheaper, more accessible cigarettes. “There will be serious unintended consequences from the legislation,” he said. “Counterfeiters from China and Indonesia will bring lots more of these products down to sell on the streets of Australia.” Many smokers in Australia say the new packs won’t change their habit. “As a
14-year veteran smoker the packets make no difference to me,” said one. Another smoker said she may be more inclined to keep the packet, with its gruesome health warnings, hidden from view, but that it wouldn’t stop her smoking. Australia aims to cut the number of people smoking from 15% of the population to just 10% in six years’ time.
Spamalot Court Missing Toilet Battle Rolls Returned Stars from The Monty Python are being sued by a film producer who claims he is entitled to as much as £1m in royalties from the musical Spamalot. Eric Idle, Michael Palin and Terry Jones are all due to give evidence to the High Court in a legal battle over the highly successful musical, a spin-off from Monty Python And The Holy Grail.
The case has been brought by Mark Forstater, the producer of the 1975 film, who claims he is entitled to a larger slice of the royalties. The court heard how “for financial purposes” Mr Forstater should be treated as “the seventh Python”. Mr Forstater is suing all five surviving Pythons, but John Cleese and Terry Gilliam, who live abroad, are not expected to give evidence. The sixth member of the team, Graham Chapman, died in 1989. Monty Python’s Spamalot, created by Eric Idle, has been so successful, both on Broadway and in the West End; Palin reportedly refers to it as his “pension plan”. In 2005 it won a Tony award. It is described on posters as being a “new musical lovingly ripped off from the
motion picture” and as such it has generated a considerable amount of spin-off merchandising income. Mr Forstater argues that under an agreement made with the Pythons in 1974, he is entitled to a great deal more of this income than he has received. That amount could run to £1m, he claims. Tom Weisselberg, appearing for Mr Forstater, told the court the Pythons were “unjustifiably attempting to secure more money from Spamalot at the expense of Mr Forstater and his company”. The dispute over how much Mr Forstater should receive started in 2005 and the two sides have been unable to resolve their issues since. In June of this year, the film producer was made bankrupt. Mr Weisselberg told the court: “Mr
Forstater is in difficult financial circumstances and has been forced to bring these proceedings.” He said the claim that he is entitled to a seventh of the income, rather than a fourteenth, is supported by the terms of the 1974 agreement. In addition two solicitors initialy involved in drawing up that deal support Mr Forstater’s claim. Mr Weisselberg said: “They understood that, for financial purposes, Mr Forstater was to be treated as the seventh Python.” He also told the court: “The outrage expressed by a number of Pythons in their witness statements as to the suggestion that Mr Forstater was to be treated as the seventh Python is, with respect to them, misguided.” The Pythons’ legal team disputes the claim.
Eastern New Mexico University received a Christmas gift box this week along with a Christmas card and written apology. A university graduate, apparently feeling guilty over a student prank many years ago, sent a box of toilet paper as repayment for loot taken from a dormitory. The box contained five packages of 16 rolls of two-ply, septic-safe tissue - a total of 80 rolls. The anonymous student apologised for stealing bathroom tissue and said his new found Christian faith led to the repayment. The handwritten message read: “Years ago when I was a young immature college student I took toilet paper from your dormitory as a prank. I apologise for that and offer this case. Jesus Christ has made such a difference in my life and has prompted me to repay for any sins I’ve done even from so long ago. God Bless and Merry Christmas.” It was unclear whether the
gift itself was a prank. But university officials say “all is forgiven. We express our admiration to the anonymous donor for their integrity and character,” Wendel Sloan, director of the school’s media relations said. “We never even knew that the toilet tissue was missing, but thank our graduate for doing what they thought was right.” The university said it is donating the tissue, which did not fit in the bathroom dispensers, to a Christian Children’s home.

World Aids Day
NEW yORk GOOD COP
CAMPAIGneRS in London marked World Aids Day with an attempt to break an hIV testing record at the G-A-Y bar in London’s Soho, as new figures suggested a record number of people in the uK - nearly 100,000 - are living with hIV. Last December’s event officially broke a Guinness World Record for the number of hIV tests conducted in an eight-hour period. A total of 467 tests were done and around £13,000 was
raised for the elton John Aids Foundation.
Staff from 56 Dean Street, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital’s HIV and sexual health centre in Soho, repeated the challenge to promote HIV awareness and “make history” again. The international annual campaign, symbolised with a red ribbon, is about increasing awareness of Aids, celebrating breakthroughs in treatment and remembering those who have died. The Prime Minister has said too many people are not educated about HIV and Aids, and almost 25,000 people who have the human immunodeficiency virus are not aware they have been infected. He
said such people were not benefiting from treatment and were increasing the risk of passing on the virus, adding: “This means up to 600 people a year could be dying from a preventable, treatable condition. People need to know that, diagnosed early; the outlook for most people with HIV in the UK today is a good one, thanks to the availability of effective treatment and the excellent care provided by the NHS. Above all, people need to know that it’s never been quicker or simpler to get tested.” 6,280 people were diagnosed with the virus last year, according to the Health Protection Agency.

IT was meant to be private, but the new York policeman who bought a homeless man a £62 pair of boots has won international and official praise. Officer Larry DePrimo appeared before reporters and cameras after being awarded a pair of cufflinks by nYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly. The 25-year-old explained that he had been inspired by his grandfather to buy the homeless barefoot man a pair of shoes, after finding him whilst he was on duty near Times Square. “He told me when I was much younger, ‘If you are going to do something, do it 100%, or don’t do it at all,’” Officer DePrimo said. “I didn’t really think anything of it at the time,” he added. “What sticks out in my mind is he was such a kind gentleman that I had to help him. I wanted to.” Jennifer Foster posted the image to the NYPD’s Facebook Page and kicked off the internet phenomenon which has seen millions viewing the story and thousands of ‘likes’ and positive comments. However, there
has been inevitable cynicism and some concern for the unidentified man at the centre of the story. “I walked by this man in Union Square Wednesday, November 21,” wrote Melissa Gallaher-Smith. “And he was again barefoot. I remember very clearly because his pants were also hiked up and his feet were very large.” Several others have reported seeing the same man, always without shoes. One told how she had bought a pair for him on a previous occasion, leading to speculation among others that he may be working some kind of scam. Homeless charities also
commented, praising Officer DePrimo’s actions but also pointing out it is not in line with the NYPD’s usual treatment of vagrants. Patrick Markee, from the Coalition for the Homeless told the LA Times that successive New York mayors had sought to clean the city’s streets of rough sleepers. “It was a really moving photo and a moving story,” he said, “and a stark contrast to a mayor who has largely ignored the homeless crisis that has spiralled out of control on his watch.” Whatever the truth of the situation, others argue; it does not take anything away from the officer’s caring gesture.

Freddie A True All-Rounder
Former England cricketer Andrew (Freddie) Flintoff has defied critics and won his first heavyweight boxing match against Richard Dawson at the Manchester Arena. He narrowly beat Dawson on points by 3938 at the end of four two-minute rounds in front of a roaring crowd in his native North West. The former England and Lancashire cricket star was given a hero’s welcome by the 5,000-strong crowd. Flintoff entered the ring wearing his old Lancashire Lightning one-day top. But after taking the first round he was floored by a punch from his American opponent early in the second. But Flintoff , who lost 20kg while training with
former world champion Barry McGuigan, came back as Dawson showed signs of tiredness. The Ashes winner showed impressive composure to take a narrow one point win according to referee Phil Edwards’ scorecard. The win was the perfect response to critics including promoter Frank Maloney, who said the fight would “shame the fight game”. Flintoff was over the moon to have made a winning return to the limelight. “You mention the Ashes at international level, but as a personal achievement I think this is the best,” he told Box Nation. “It’s something that isn’t natural to me. I’ve had to work hard.” The 34-year-old, who has only been training for four and a half months with McGuigan and his son Shane, added: “The feeling of be-
ing back in front of a crowd and winning at the end - I can’t describe it. I wanted to experience it. The people around Manchester, and the country, supported me so well playing cricket. It was a no brainer to have it up here. The crowd made a massive difference. It’s been amazing - humbling, really.” Flintoff’s progress was followed by a Sky television documentary, where his commitment and dedication to achieving prime physical condition were clearly evident. But doubts were raised by seasoned observers about the former all-rounder’s technical boxing skills. More than three years on from his last outing as a professional sportsman, helping England regain the Ashes from Australia at The Oval in 2009 while battling a knee injury that would ultimately curtail his career.
The console launched in the US in November, but with concerns surrounding the amount of games that were available for the minimum £250 cost. The battery has also caused complaints described by customers as having a weak performance. Other complaints include a lack of stand-out launch games and frustrating menus and online services. Nintendo UK marketing director Shelly Pearce says that the Wii U’s inbuilt screen “fundamentally changes the way you play video games”. She said all existing games can be played on the new console and it offers “a really deep gaming experience”. We can’t wait to get the Wii U into the hands of our fans in the UK.” Over the summer at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, Nintendo illustrated how New Super Mario Bros. U could be played on either a TV or the touchscreen controller. The latest
instalment in the franchise lets up to four people play simultaneously with traditional controllers, while another can join in with the touchscreen controller to join in. New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand demonstrate what Nintendo calls “asymmetric gameplay” - where a group of people playing together are having very different play experiences on a single game. And after taking on board criticism of the original Wii’s awkward online system, Nintendo has boosted the new console’s connected capabilities. “The system will know when you’re playing with your user account - everything that you’ve played in the past, what your preferences are,” said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. “So it will truly be an experience unique to you, if your wife or your children want different experiences; they really are tailored for each particular consumer.”
Wii U Launch H–BDAY 2U
The Wii U is the first major home console launch since 2006 and it is already a hit in the US. Fans queued in London’s Oxford Street, desperate to be amongst the first to own one, despite mixed press reviews. There has already been a high demand in pre-sales orders. The Wii U features the GamePad controller; a tabletstyle device which allows users to continue playing after the connected television has been turned off or switched to another channel. The controller has a 6.2in touchscreen display and a three to five-hour battery life. Among the games expected to be best-sellers are ZombiU, which carries an 18 age restriction, NintendoLand - the Wii Sports for the new console - and New Super Mario Bros U.
Monday 3rd December was the 20th anniversary of the first ever text message sent to a mobile phone. The first SMS was sent on December 3, 1992, by 22-yearold British engineer Neil Papworth who worked for technology company Sema. He used his computer to send the message “Merry Christmas” to an Orbitel 901 mobile phone. Texting has now surpassed the traditional phone call as the most common method of staying in touch. Speaking to Sky News, Mr Papworth said he never envisaged that texting would be so popular. “Back then I had no idea - I was just doing a day’s testing. It wasn’t until the 10th anniversary that I realised and thought ‘Wow that was a big thing’. And here we are
another 10 years later and text messaging has gone on to even bigger and better things now.” According to figures released by Ofcom, more than 150 billion texts were sent in the UK last year, almost triple those sent five years ago. Its most prolific users are 12 to 15-year-olds, who send an average of 193 texts every week, almost four times as much as the UK average. In fact, most of us are now more likely to text a friend than to pick up the phone or have a face-to-face conversation with them. But the first half of 2012 saw two
quarterly declines in the volume of SMS messages sent in the UK. The drop is being put down to the meteoric rise in free web-based communications available on smartphones and tablets such as WhatsApp, Blackberry Messenger (BBM), iMessenger, Google Talk and MSN Messenger. An increase in communication through social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook is also thought to be having an impact. SMS stands for Short Messaging Service and a message is traditionally under 160 characters in length.

Secret Santa WHERE TO N
A
n American businessman posing as a “secret Santa” is giving away $100,000 in $100 bills to survivors of Superstorm Sandy. The benefactor, from Kansas City, Missouri insists on not being named or photographed.
He spent a day in New Jersey and New York giving out crisp bills to stunned residents. “It’s about the random acts of kindness,” he said. “I’m just setting an example, and if 10% of the people who see me emulate what I’m doing, anybody can be a Secret Santa.” In Staten Island, he passed homes surrounded by debris before stopping at a rescue centre run by volunteers. Carol Hefty, a 72-year-old retiree living in a damaged home, could hardly believe it when she was handed one of the notes. “But this isn’t real money,” she said at first, glancing at the red “Secret Santa”
stamped onto the $100. “It is, and it’s for you,” the businessman told the woman, who broke down in tears and hugged him. During the day, the man’s security entourage - police officers in uniform from New York and New Jersey, plus FBI agents and former agents kept a close watch over the cash hand outs. Some wore caps marked with the word “elf”. The Secret Santa himself wears an “elf” cap and a red top, plus blue jeans. At a Staten Island Salvation Army store, Janice Ken-
nedy, 41, was delighted when she received four $100 bills. Unemployed and with a twoyear-old daughter, she lost her home in the storm and now lives with her boyfriend. The money will go toward Christmas presents and her toddler’s next birthday. Secret Santa took up the holiday tradition from a close Kansas City friend, Larry Stewart, who for years handed out bills each December to unsuspecting strangers. Mr Stewart died in 2007 after giving away more than $1m to strangers, mostly in $100 bills.

AVID Beckham’s LA Galaxy teammates have begged him to stay on for another year after they won their second successive Major League Soccer Cup. A chant of “one more year” rang out from the Galaxy locker room as the players celebrated their 3-1 victory over the houston Dynamo in
Beckham’s final game in MLS. Beckham celebrated in the Galaxy dressing room with his teammates, taking turns spraying each other with bottles of Champagne. “We were telling David that we wanted him for one more year,” said defender Todd Dunivant. “We said that last year too and we got it, so why not push our luck a little bit? We will see what happens.” While their pleas will go unanswered, their reaction
to his leaving shows the level of affection he has inspired. Appearing both happy and relieved, Beckham paused at one point during the postmatch news conference, after losing his train of thought, before saying: “Too much champagne already.” “At the end of the day, winning a championship in my last game at Manchester United and winning a championship in my last game with Real Madrid and then winning championship here in my

I came here six years ago my commitment was to the Galaxy, to the league and to the sport and that doesn’t change even though I am not playing here.” But Beckham’s time in southern California has not been without controversy. He faced criticism for missing games and had run-ins with fans, especially when he first arrived. His loans to European teams, which caused him to miss parts of MLS seasons, angered some Los Angeles fans who displayed their dislike with signs at games that said “Go home fraud” and “Part-time player.” Galaxy also made mistakes in their handling of Beckham, in-
cluding giving the impression they were treating him the same as any other player despite paying him more money for one practice than several of his teammates made in a full season. Controversies aside, Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said he was sure Beckham, who has won league titles in his homeland with Manchester United and in Spain with Real Madrid before two titles with Galaxy, would find success. “Many would think it is the last chapter, I think David thinks there is another chapter and if there is it is probably going to be another great championship,” he said.

close at age 37, but as yet, he has said he has no plans to retire. He is expected to make a decision on where he will end up playing next by the end of the year. Sources close to the player have confirmed an approach by Monaco. There have also been hints about a possible move to Ligue 1 highflyers Paris Saint-Germain. It is also rumoured that there have been offers from China, Russia and Brazil for the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player. Beckham’s presence in the US has also helped the league achieve unprecedented growth. Since 2007 when he started with Galaxy, the league has grown from 12 to 19 teams and has more than doubled its attendance. “My impact will be down to what other people decide. It was an amazing Jubilee Street Party at Vivo, Starco, Las Americas, a lavish 7 course buffet, with John Sharples and Barry Pugh.....or better known as ‘Bitter & Twisted as well as resident singer Marc Craig, entertaining the huge attendance. What a day it was for everyone who attended......especially for Kelly & I. You may remember the raffle, first prize being a Canary Island Cruise with Thomson aboard the newest ship to join their fleet the ‘Majesty’, and second prize a wonderful Diamond Pendant. We as usual donated a trip for the raffle prize, as did the majority of our group who attended. The Buffet was amazing, the entertainment spectacular, with the buzz of winning one of two incredible prizes, the atmosphere was electric. John and Barry had the raffle tickets, they picked out a young holiday maker to pick the first prize...THE CRUISE!!!!! Kelly & I had raffle ticket #54 The little angel........picked out #54...............NUMBER 54..........we had won the Cruise. Hallelujah.....

HM The Queens Kell and I were beside ourselves.......okay I was bouncing around like a little kid who met Santa, via the Polar Express on Christmas Eve, I still have the copy of the Tenerife Weekly with the centre spread and picture of my ‘Gappy Grin’.... over the moon does not even compare to it. Fast forward to 12th November 2012.....we decided that we would pay the £400 for the drinks upgrade, we had so many recommendations to do this from lots of Tenerife ExPats..... The only downside to our
experience was the Thomson Cruise Customer Services in Cardiff......it took a certain person, 18 days to respond to our emails, regarding the said ‘upgrade’ to be told we could not have it....Disaster......no wait...it’s all good.....eventually we paid for the ‘drinks package, and we even managed to get Kelly’s parents to join us on-board the ship whilst it was docked in Santa Cruz...... Friday 23rd November 2012 Sta Cruz de Tenerife Get this readers, its only £15 per person to bring your guests on-board on the day of
embarkation...they can enjoy all the perks of being an ‘All Inclusive’ guest up until the time of departure........we boarded at 13:00 with our guests and enjoyed our experience of al la carte dining and free drinks for the afternoon. Sadly, Kelly’s parents had to leave at 4pm...Work commitments.....they could have stayed until 22:30.....All-Inclusive......any of our Tenerife Friends going on this cruise, text me....I’ll even drive you to the port!!!! Being British Tenerifians.......it was shorts and flip flops as we investigated our home for the
week. 7 restaurants, bars and cafes.....SHABBA!!! Our Cabin was a standard outside, meaning we had a picture window, albeit our cabin was small, we had the most comfy bed I have ever slept in. We decided to have dinner at Seven Sea’s Restaurant........ Marvelous....... NOT...... We set the tone be wearing our Tenerife Battle Dress.....shorts and flip flops....the head waiter was not impressed to say the least.....we had no idea about protocol or dress on board a luxury liner... I was quite happy to scarper
to the buffet on deck 10, but the head waiter offered us ‘partlet’.....and we had an incredible waiter service dinner and met a lovely couple, whom we nick-named professional cruiser’s. We went to live show’s every evening and they were very good, the Casino didn’t seem overly popular during the early days of the cruise, I think the majority of cruisers were simply finding out where everything was on board. Saturday 24th November gran Canaria I forgot to mention every even-

Diamond Jubilee 2012...... ing the maids left you the daily news, what’s happening where and when on board, there are even two movie channels in your cabin, along with Sky News & Sports.....very impressive. After a superb sleep, even though I was wide awake at 5:30am, I investigated the 24hr Buffet on Deck 10, you could literally eat and drink 24-7 if you wanted to. The breakfast at the Seven Seas was very, very good. We had been briefed up by Steve and Lorna Eade prior to setting sail to visit ‘Primarni’.....297 Euros and several shopping bags later we returned to the ‘Majesty’ As it was a Saturday, we decided to see the show’s and visit the nightclub, highlight being getting the DJ’s to play ‘The Killers - Are We Human’, we had a right laugh teaching the professional cruisers the ‘hamster dance’, along with the ‘shopping trolley’, ‘thumb dance’ and the ‘Mexican Gun-Slinger’.....by now I decided I was somewhat peckish....after several lifts, to several floors, and bouncing off walls, we found the 24hr buffet. This when I got four members of the crew to dance to ‘Gang-
nam Style’ the video is on Facebook. One Chicken Curry and Chips, and a Cheeseburger and Chips, we were sorted. Sunday 25th November 2012 - La Palma Typical it was light drizzle to greet us, no fear, we were off to find the shops, we had to continue our collection of Fridge Magnets....one thing we didn’t consider was getting wet feet, we still sporting our Tenerifian Battle Dress, and we got our feet soaked as the paving in Las Palmas was hiding a multitude of sins.....4 inch puddles under every flagstone. After doing the touristy stuff, like wandering around taking photo’s etc etc. We deciding to go back on board the ship for lunch. Today’s theme being ‘British Pub Grub’......now this was something else. Unbelievable Geoff, the Captain, announced that due to extreme conditions which he had been monitoring the previous 12 hours he decided in the interest of us lot, the cruisers safety he decided to not visit Madeira...... It was almost a Mutiny.....not kidding.....’I only came on this cruise for Madeira’ was all you could hear for the rest of the
afternoon...I mean what’s more important your own safety or visiting Madeira? The Captain decided that our next port of call would be Fuerteventura, I was more than happy, another Fridge Magnet for my collection. The Captain decided to sail between La Gomera and Tenerife to Fuerteventura.....the mobile and Facebook was going bananas, one message from Hannah and Vicki (Deli on the Hill) said they could see a large ferry passing by. Funnier still was Kelly’s Mum, Christine telephoning us to say ‘she could see the ship’....we could make out San Miguel Marina and the airport, that was a surreal moment. Monday 26th November 2012 - Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura Having never visited Fuerteventura, I had no idea what to expect, also having an outside cabin, we could see, well I could see the Port and even better there’s a huge shopping centre just outside of the Port, it was less than a 10 minute stroll, and in fairness the shopping was cool too. After a morning of retail therapy we decided to go and find ourselves a bottle of Dorada to celebrate our bargains. No success per say as Fuerteventurians must be proper drinkers as we could only find Especial...NO, NO, NO, dos Carlsberg chuck, shouldn’t have said chuck, as the heavens opened an there was a torrential downpour...guess what... Kelly & I were attired in our finest Tenerifian Battle Dress...... and flip flops......Fuerteventura is very similar to Las Palmas in that every flagstone was hiding its own puddle....soaked tootsies again. Tuesday 27th November 2012 - Day at Sea As we said ‘Tar-rah’ to Fuerteventura the Sea became somewhat choppy, the ship seemed to be quieter as lots of people were feeling somewhat rough...and confined themselves too their cabins. We booked ourselves to the visit to the Bridge and see what’s what. Our visit was a real eye opener; there is a system for a system that tells the
system who tells the captain or whoever is in charge of the Bridge to check the systems. Now bearing in mind it’s 10am in the morning the ship is break-dancing its way to Agadir Morocco in a Gangnam Style. We did manage to get the Captain to have his picture taken with Kelly and I whilst he was holding a copy of the Tenerife Weekly! We agreed that we would like to do an excursion when we got to Agadir, so we went to the Excursion Meeting, the young lady was talking about the shore trips available to us, “Did you know that ‘Loro Parque is famous for Parrots
waiting for us. Problem was, we were absolutely stuffed from the meal earlier, but what an amazing gesture from him, chin chin Alan. The weather was getting worse, Kelly and I found it rather amusing trying to get to sleep each night since Sunday evening, the pitch and yaw of the ship meant that we rolling around in synchronized harmony in our double bed........Chuckle Brothers we are not, but we had a laugh using their catchphrase ‘Too mee, tooo yoooo’ Wednesday 28th November 2012 - Agadir, Morocco Woke up to a beautiful morning in North Africa, as we were
Again this was a really good eye opener, you could buy pretty much anything here, and it was nowhere near as bad as other Souks if been to in the past. We got some gifts, and the haggling was amusing, all the vendor had to do if it was a stalemate, he had to have his photo taken with the Tenerife Weekly! All in all Agadir was a very good afternoon trip, we came, we saw, we bartered. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening’s entertainment, and on our return to the cabin, Strawberry’s dipped in Chocolate...thanks again Alan. We could deffo get right into this cruising lark.
and has a dolphin show’, were my ears playing tricks on me? Loro Parque is famous for Parrots, but excuse me, no mention of the Orca’s, Sea Lions or the Penguin Planet... We treated ourselves and paid the supplement and dine on the ships only Al La Carte restaurant and for £19 per person, I think Kelly would agree the food was on another level. Maria, Kelly’s Hairdresser, sent an email to Alan, the ships Executive Chef, saying we were on board, we thought nothing of it until we ate at the Bistro, 7 courses and wine.. SHABBTASTIC, we asked the waiter if we could meet Alan, if he was not too busy. Within minutes we met one of the most charming fella’s I’ve ever met. Bearing in mind every single eating place on board was to an extremely high standard and the staff we impeccably turned out. I have never seen sooo many staff cleaning here, touching up paint, hoovering and polishing anything that had a shine. We got back to our cabin to find that Alan, Executive Chef had arranged for a bottle of Champagne on Ice, and some delightful little cakes to be
not leaving the ship until the afternoon, we had a lovely breakfast at Cafe Royale. We were astonished at the amount of taxis parked outside, white taxis (similar to Tenerife) and little red taxis.....we heard that a massive fight broke out between the taxi drivers, we missed it, so we decided to stay up top and wait to see if it kicked off again. We then head off for our coach, we met our guide, yep he was called ‘Mohammed’ and away we went to the Kasbah.....we were subsequently ambushed with little Moroccans, carrying Goats, Snakes and carved out rocks....we even had a guide who followed us around, We tried to escape unsuccessfully, so we gave him some loose change. Back the safety of the coach, and onwards to ‘Fantasia’.... now this was very entertaining, 8 mad Moroccan’s on 8 mad Moroccan horse’s, and each of the 8 mad Moroccan’s only had a rifle each....what could possible go wrong.....nothing...whoohooooo. In fairness, ‘Fantasia’ was a very good afternoon, so it was time to get your bartering head on.....off to the Souk!!
Thursday 29th November 2012 - KFC - Lanzarote Having recently visited in January, it was simply the task of getting a taxi to CC Deiland and KFC! One thing we started to notice when on land, we were still moving in motion of the ship.. How very, very odd. We were having cocktails in the Rendezvous Bar when the Captain gave his update for our sailing back to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Bearing in mind listening to a Greek man over a tanoy, whilst the ship is still dancing to ‘Gangnam Style’.. It was somewhat difficult to concentrate on his voice......he said that it was going to be......’ROUGH’ Say it like you mean it skipper. Friday 30th November 2012 Sta Cruz de Tenerife We had our last breakfast on board the truly Majestic Majesty......it was a fabulous cruise, fabulous food and drink. Wonderful staff and crew. We would like to thank VIVO Decades, Chris Miller, Lorna & Stephen Eade and especially Thomson Cruises, for giving Kelly and Me and incredible week on board the Thomson Majesty. Ooh Ooh we will be booking again for November 2013.

Lightly season. Place the Chicken breast on top, and then the Duck breast. Add a final layer of stuffing if you wish. Gently roll the meat and tie it with string. We want to hear about your funny Christmas dinner disasters – Email us with your stories and we will publish them! Christmas dinner around the world: Henry VIII was the first English king to enjoy turkey, although Edward VII made eating turkey
fashionable at Christmas. Indeed turkey was a luxury right up until the 1950’s when refrigerators became commonplace. However, traditions for many countries around the globe vary enormously where the centrepiece can range from pork chops to curried goat! norway: The big festive feast takes place on Christmas Eve. Most people around the coastal regions eat fish - concoctions of cod and haddock and a variety called lutefisk. Inland they go for pork chops, specially prepared sausages and occasionally lamb. Sweden: The Christmas feast consists of a smorgasbord of caviar, shellfish, cooked and raw fish and cheeses. ukraine: The people here pre-
pare huge broths brimming with meat for Christmas Eve rather than Christmas day. Czech Republic: Tradition dictates that the tree is not lit before Christmas Eve then they have a big dinner of fish soup, salads, eggs and carp. Scarily, the number of people at the table must be even or it is believed the person without a partner will die next year. Germany: The Germans tend to have a game feast on Christmas day, usually wild boar or venison. Jamaica: Christmas dinner usually consists of rice, gungo peas, chicken, ox tail and curried goat. Italy: Christmas dinner in Italy can last for more than 4 hours. Most families will have 7 or more courses including antipasti, a small portion of pasta, a roast meal, followed by 2 salads and 2 sweet puddings - then cheese fruit, brandy and chocolates. Austria: A typical Christmas dinner would consist of braised carp served with gingerbread and beer sauce. Poland: The traditional Christmas Eve supper consists of 12 non-meat dishes, representing the months of the year and featuring fish such as pike, herring and carp. Other typical Polish dishes are fish soup, sauerkraut with wild mushrooms or peas and Polish dumplings with various fillings.

Sharples in Session By John Sharples
Bacon Barmpot Recycle,
Re-Use … Re-Think
A company has created a gift for the man who has everything - bacon flavoured shaving cream. It has been described as “high end, luxurious baconscented shaving cream” and it costs about £9.
The inventor said, “There is nothing more powerful than the smell of bacon, nothing. Bacon is the smell of champions. “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and bacon is the best part of breakfast. Why not smell like it and be the best?” He has also come up with other porky products like bacon roses, bacon lip balm and bacon baby formula. For those people who “who love bacon to death”, he has created a £2,000 bacon-wrapped coffin. He said, “Bacon is delicious, people get excited when they smell it. When you walk into a room don’t you want people to be excited to see you?” I’d rather have a sausage myself!
Recycling is thought of as the big new thing. I don’t believe that it is. Here is why!
THIS WEEK’S RANT
Why does football always seem to take over the TV screens? All year long, popular TV shows like Coronation Street generate millions and millions of pounds for TV companies in the form of advertising. The minute that a match appears, our favourite shows are shifted to a later or earlier time, often without very much warning. I accept that there are millions of
football fans too, but I don’t count myself amongst that number. I hate the game. I can’t, for the life of me, see what all the fuss is about! All I see is a lot of overpaid, over-rated, self-important immature men running around and getting excited as their testosterone levels reach the same levels as their wages! How is it that they are called national heroes? 29 million people tuned in to watch Hilda Ogden’s departure from Coronation Street, when she finally hung up her headscarf and packed
away her flying ducks! I know that footballers are famous and many of them are seen as a good example to the youth of today, but for me, the heroes in our lives are the Doctors, Firemen, Police and Forces who save people every day and protect us. They go out on a limb, putting their lives on the line for us. Maybe we should get them to kick a football at the fire instead of water, or have a penalty knockout to decide the result of a war. A lot less people would be killed and they would all then be seen as heroes.
When I was a child, there were no carrier bags in the shops. Everyone took a shopping bag with them to the shops. If you didn’t take one, you would just have to carry your shopping in your arms. The carrier bag really became very popular in the eighties, when plastic really began to take over the world. We used to return bottles to the shops where we bought them when
I was young, now they all go in the bin. Why can’t we go back to this green way of living? Why can’t milk be put back into bottles and re-used again and again? The government could make this law in the shake of a lamb’s tail. Any companies that didn’t play the game could be taxed at a higher rate that would soon make them comply! The best way to get your own way is to kick them in the pocket There is far too much fannying about on this subject; It is way past time to do something about waste.
I am celebrating 11 years without a cigarette. I found giving up the bad habit as easy as falling off a log. I was lucky. We all know that smoking kills. But here are some facts about smoking that you may not be aware of! 1. People on board Christopher Columbus’s ship brought smoking to Europe. 2. A Cigarette contains approximately 4,800 chemicals, 69 of which have been proven to cause cancers, so why don’t they just remove the bad chemicals? 3. In New York, a law was passed in 1908 banning women from smoking. 4. Sir Walter Raleigh took his pipe with him to the scaffold when he was beheaded in 1618.
5. The term smoking wasn’t introduced until the late seventeenth century, before that it was known as “Dry Drunkenness” 6. Sugar and Cocoa are often added to cigarettes, a fact that many diabetics are unaware of. 7. Renaissance painter, Ben Jonson, argued that smoking was the “Devil’s Fart! 8. Cigarettes contain Hydrogen Cyanide, which was used in the poison gas chambers, Arsenic, Nail Polish Cleaner and embalming fluid! 9. Urea, a major component of urine is used to flavour cigarettes. 10. It is believed that 1 billion people will die from smoking related diseases in the 21st century.

CalDer Jon
in The Spotlight By Barry Sparkle Calder Jon has been in agony for around 15 years! he pretty much stumbled into the job when he met Jeremy Kyle at Virgin Radio in London and started to work behind the scenes on “Jezza’s Confessions”. This was the perfect starting point for a career in answering people’s dilemmas through agony columns, and on his radio show “Calder’s Confessions” which, of course is an offshoot of the version pioneered by Kyle who left radio to conquer daytime TV in 2006. Continuing where Jeremy left off was a natural progression for Calder – he says “there are so many people with problems out there and all many of them need is a friendly ear to help them untangle their complex lives”. At 44, Calder is no stranger to the issues that life can throw at you either. he’s a father to four grown up children and has three amazing grandchildren. he lives with his partner helen and her daughter nancy who suffers from a rare heart condition which essentially means that her little body has to function with half a heart. Calder says “watching this gorgeous four year old girl who has already endured three open heart surgeries in her life and seeing how she relishes and enjoys every day despite her condition, gives me immense inspiration. It kind of puts life into perspective for me and is often a reality check. After all, we all worry about things that pale into insignificance when you consider what nancy has been through”.
WHERE ARE YOU FROM? I was born in Guildford and spent most of my life growing up in London. Right now I prefer Island Life and am currently living on The Isle of Wight in the UK! WHEN’S YOUR BIRTHDAY? December 27th – nightmare as I always get Christmas/ Birthday presents combined. DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE FAMOUS? No not at all which is quite odd when you consider my agony column is read by around 40,000 readers in various publications and my radio show airs on about 60 radio stations each week in Spain, the UK, USA and even Aruba! ALTHOUGH YOU ARE IN THE LIMELIGHT, DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE SHY? I wouldn’t exactly say I’m shy but I don’t think I’m in the limelight either. IF YOU HAD A DIFFERENT JOB, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Some people will find this odd but I have always wanted to be a long distance lorry driver! All that peace and quiet appeals to me. WHO AND WHY IS YOUR IDOL? It’s a bit sad but Jeremy Kyle is my idol. When we worked together in radio we spent night after night together in the studio and I saw a side to him that others don’t see. The compassion and the understanding he had for
the problems we heard on his version of Confessions was amazing. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST DISASTER YOU HAVE EVER HAD WHILE WORKING? In my youth I was a messenger for a huge multinational company in London. I used to have to deliver bonds and stuff to banks. I’d walk around London with pieces of paper worth millions in my hand. One day I stopped off for a cuppa on my way to deliver a 300 million pound bond and that delay cost the company a few million. Well, I wasn’t to know was I? WHAT IS YOUR TIPPLE? Nothing too elaborate I’m afraid, plain old vodka and coke. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SPORT? I’m not too sporty to be honest but if I had to choose something to watch it would be motor racing. HOW MANY LANGUAGES DO YOU SPEAK? Just the one - English HOW MANY HOUSES DO YOU HAVE? Only one! WHAT TIME DO YOU GET UP IN THE MORNING? Much to my partners disgust, I roll out of bed between 10 and 11 most mornings. WHAT DO YOU SPEND YOUR MONEY ON? Mostly gadgets and gizmos WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? I was a drayman delivering
beer in London when I was 16. DO YOU DO CHARITY WORK? I’ve worked with many charities over the years through working with Jeremy Kyle but recently, I’ve been concentrating on the radio show and agony column although I am in contact with a number of charities as a result. WHY DID YOU BECOME AN AGONY UNCLE? I think you get hooked on listening to people’s problems and after a while, the answers to most of them just come to you. Over the years I must have spoken to close to 100,000 people and helped them with their troubles. DO YOU HAVE A PRIVATE PLANE? No. DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS? No but I’m thinking about getting a dog. WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? Free time? What’s that? WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD? I adore a good curry! WHERE WAS YOUR LAST HOLIDAY? Tenerife – Los Cristianos – it was lovely. TELL US A SECRET ABOUT YOU! There aren’t many, I like to be an open book. I do however have some guilty pleasures like listening to S Club 7 for example! DO YOU ENJOY YOUR CELEBRITY STATUS?
I just enjoy being me. I was once asked for my autograph and I felt so embarrassed. My belief is that we are all equal so, hopefully, despite what I do for a living, I come across as an ordinary bloke. DO YOU WEAR BOXERS OR BRIEFS? Boxers – although I’m just as happy going commando. IF YOU WERE A BISCUIT, WHICH WOULD YOU BE? Rich Tea I think, plain and straightforward. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO EAT? We have a lovely pub here on The Isle of Wight called The Dark Horse. The triple horse burger is my fave! NAME ONE ACTRESS YOU WOULD LOVE TO GET NAUGHTY WITH? If I had a Tardis and could go back in time it would be Jenny Agutter. She was just poetry in motion to me. WERE YOU BULLIED AS A KID? Yes I was although I had a big brother who soon sorted it out for me. IF YOU WERE GIVEN A CHANCE, WOULD YOU ENTER BIG BROTHER? Like a shot! I think the BB house needs some reality! WOMEN OR CARS? These days, cars. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE THE MOST DESIRABLE MAN ON THE EARTH? I would imagine it feels amazing – sadly I’m not that
man. IF I CAME TO YOUR HOME AND LOOKED INSIDE THE FRIDGE, WHAT WOULD I FIND? Cheese, wine, ham and some coke for my vodka. WHAT’S YOUR BAD QUALITY? I sleep way too much. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS? Open, honest and thoughtful. WHAT MAKES YOU ANGRY? People who take liberties.
WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE DO YOU DISLIKE? Those who think they are better than everybody else. IF I GIVE YOU ONE MILLION EUROS HOW WOULD YOU SPEND IT? I’d keep half for myself to live on for a while and I’d give the rest to good causes. WHAT´S THE MOST EMBARRASSING SITUATION YOU HAVE BEEN IN? Being asked for my autograph years ago. I just thought… ”why? I’m nobody!”

Gaga Garage encounter
Pop goddess Lady Gaga has once again proved she’s one of the coolest celebrities to obsess over. The kooky singer was staying at a house in Peru during the South American leg of her Born This Way Ball tour and had celebrated Thanksgiving with a dinner with family and friends. Waking up hungry in the night she decided to raid the fridge for leftovers-naked, a turkey and stuffing sandwich her midnight mission. however, upon hearing strange noises on a security monitor she was surprised to discover no less than 35 gaga fans or “monsters” as they’re known, had broken into the garage!!
Rather than alerting the authorities she shared her food with them!! She later tweeted: “Thanksgiving story: woke up for leftovers in kitchen (naked) - stumbled on security camera revealing 35 monsters in my garage #why #iloveu, (sic)” She went on: “I should be mad I guess except I
tried to figure out how to slide stuffing under the door, but there’s no cat-flap. “#MONSTeRFACT when gaga is asleep try to break into the garage, sing loud as possible, + ring the doorbell repeatedly #happening now #bad kids, (sic).” In another story of her generosity to her fans, earlier on the same tour in Brazil, she sent burgers fries and cokes down to masses of fans camped outside her hotel!!
Ri-Ri Reveals all....AGAIN!!
Bahamian beauty Rihanna has been photographed posing naked to promote her new single “pour it out”. The songs artwork shows a topless Rihanna covering her breasts with her arms, holding a dollar note over her mouth, she tweeted the shot to her fans and exclusively revealed her choice of next single from her 7th studio album “ Unapologetic”. It’s the latest in a string of risqué shots tweeted by the star, others included her in bed, smoking a cigar in her underwear and topless in her dressing room after getting soaked during her Xfactor performance. It makes me wonderwho’s taking these shots.... and does he need a break? Only joking Mrs Craig xx
“DOWNTOWN” ABBEy?
Fans of period drama “Downton Abbey” rejoice!! There’s a spinoff on the way!!
Series creator Julian Fellowes is developing a prequel to his blockbuster period drama with American channel NBC. Set in New York City in the late 19th century, it’s to be called “The Gilded Age” and is a cash-in on the remarkable
success of the British drama across the Atlantic. Set several decades before the period setting of “D.A” , the link seems vague at best, and as I’ve mentioned in previous issues, the total lack of zombies, radioactive spiders and galaxies far, far away means that it might not be at the top of my must watch list!!

Many villas this size are a lot higher on the hillside of San Eugenio Alto so transport is essential whereas this property has the advantage of being only 10 minutes walk downhill to the seafront, shops, bars and restaurants and nightlife yet far enough away from the touristic lifestyle to benefit from the peace and quiet that the more residential areas enjoy. The Villa enjoys superb views to the ocean and island of La Gomera
This property is being sold with all the furniture and fittings in the 5 bedroom detached Villa at top of the Villa is a separate penthouse Studio which as the current owners never use, is a blank canvass for your own design and taste. There is a large fully fitted kitchen with ample storage and working space and an interconnecting doorway to the spacious living/diner, great for entertaining friends. A large family bathroom located between the 5 bedrooms and the master bedroom has a recently refurbished en-suite with a walk-in
with various terraces providing sun or shade as well as a large swimming pool. The level above the pool has a spacious BBQ area with an outside kitchen and an outside wine cellar complete with extra storage and beer fridge carved into the rock face. This is a great opportunity to invest in a lovely family property with a perfect location, reduced from 995,000 Euros to 695,000 Euros for a quick sale.

Calder spent twelve years working as PA and Co-presenter with Jeremy Kyle on various radio stations, he is now a Freelance Radio Presenter where he answers listeners´dilemmas each Sunday night on the airwaves. We are also very grateful to have him here, answering your questions and queries as part of the Tenerife Weekly team.
I’M LOneLY AnD SAD
I’ve had a lot of sadness in my life. I lost my husband at 30 and was left with three small boys, then when my youngest was 26 he took his own life. The rest of my family, including my two other sons, have moved to Australia, and I’m wondering how I can brighten up my life. Can you help me get over my sadness and loss? Gaynor, 41
Its very difficult Sal as we all tend to deal with death, sadness and loneliness in our own way. You’ve suffered more than your fair share of losses and that obviously casts a huge shadow over the rest of your life. Talking through your feelings with friends and just working hard
at coming to terms with things can really help. I know your other two boys have moved thousands of miles away but with modern technology like the internet, you can still be up to date and involved in their lives. Have you explained to them how you feel? I suspect that you didn’t want to cause a fuss or hold them back in anyway so you’ve probably just kept your emotions bottled up. Try asking
them for some support and see how they respond. In the meantime, life really must go on for you. Sitting at home alone will just make you feel more miserable so getting out and about and even making new friends is absolutely essential. You’ve been through an awful past and that’s a perfect reason to do your best to make the most of the present and the future.

Daughter Is Dating A The Wrong Type!! I have a real problem with my daughter’s new boyfriend. He is a local lad that I know has been in trouble with the police in the past and I don’t trust him at all. She’s totally besotted with him, but she’s only 16 and I worry that she doesn’t really know what she’s getting herself into. How can I warn her without sounding like a nagging mother?
Marion, 46 You can jump up and down and have endless heart to hearts with your daughter Marion but you have to let her make her own choices in life. I’m sure you mean well although I don’t
‘Worried for my son’
doubt that your opinion of this lad is based on fact. The fact is, it’s not your life and it’s not your relationship. It’s fantastic that you care so much but trying to force things on someone else invariably leads
to them rebelling against you. Just make sure your daughter knows you will love and support her no matter what she wants to and you’ll probably be quite surprised at how quickly she works out this guy isn’t
‘Job woes’
I’m a masseuse and four weeks ago a client complained that I had been unprofessional at work. I’m so upset by this and my boss has suspended me until she investigates it. I’m living close to the breadline already and can’t afford not to work. Lynsey
My son was born with two clubfeet and has had lots of operations to correct this and he is also severely asthmatic. I think he might now be being bullied at school. I’m so worried about him and wish that I could have given him a better start to life. I feel so guilty that he is not happy. Paula
Letting your guilt consume you is only going to make matters worse for both you and your son Paula. I know the lad hasn’t had the best start in life but I think you underestimate the power a mothers love and support has. You didn’t cause any of these problems
and your son knows that. Why waste time agonising over something you just can’t change? Do everything the doctors tell you to do and encourage your boy to socialise and make friends. You’ll be amazed at the difference a positive attitude makes, honestly. As far the bullying goes, it’s completely unacceptable and you must talk to the school and let them know your concerns. Bullying these days is seen, quite rightly, as a huge issue. Above all, try to stop worrying because right now, that’s becoming a far bigger problem than anything else. Good luck with this.
Aside from telling your side of the story and trusting your boss to see that you did no wrong, I don’t think you can do much about this Lynsey. It’s a two-way street, isn’t it? You deserve a fair hearing and the client deserves to have their complaint investigated. I know your short of cash and can’t afford to lose your job but you can’t simply hurry this along. I assume that you’re being paid whilst on suspension? If that’s not the case then it’s definitely time to seek legal advice to see where you stand. Your first port of call in the UK should be your local Citizens Advice Bureau where you’ll find masses of information and advice on employment law. Hopefully, waiting this one out will prove to be the best option as the truth usually wins the day. Try not worry too much, whatever happens, it won’t be the end of the world.

CD Tenerife Are Twitchy At The Top
For first against third this was no classic as a late defensive howler left CD Tenerife with a 1-1 draw at home to Real Oviedo. The recently bailed out visitors had little to offer but Tenerife were hardly rich with ideas, especially in a poor first half. Suso hustled but the final touch was missing with Loro and Aridane looking blunt, Martinez was the main threat from Oviedo but home goalie Sergio was barely tested despite the Tenerife back four looking unsure. Aridane found the back of the net just before half time from a Chechu cross, the ref spotted the offside and ruled it out. Inspiration was needed for the second half, Yeray came off the bench and looked more purposeful, Loro was carried off clutching his ankle in agony after close attention from Cerrajeria, the sprain could mean
three weeks out of action, and Cristo Martin joined the action sparking a prolonged assault from Tenerife. Suso and Cristo went close as the Oviedo keeper dithered; the best chance fell to Aridane who spurned an open goal. Yeray tried to force the pace but his weak shot was easily gathered by the goalie and a more

We had plenty of close games in the Wild Bull CoastFM darts league this Sunday with “Chelsea Rob” getting his score prediction absolutely spot on in the Chipeque nomads and Target B game unfortunately for him he got the wrong side....
Despite the score line the games in the first Division went to the wire with the exception of Rood Bar who easily beat Beesnees. With Graham and Daniel from bar Rood throwing 180 each and Daniel finishing on 102. In the second division it was a good day at Summerlands even if the Pool Side team lost!!! Chris Green still won his first game!!! Over at the beesnees the hunnies got beat 5-3 with Lol

OuTGuNNED Sprinting Towards CB CANARIAS FOR AWAy DEFEAT The New year Another brave effort on the road from CB Canarias but this season they are not just up against great teams but also outstanding individual basketball players. Juventut of Barcelona ran out 92-81 winners despite a good team showing from the yellows.
Juventut dominated the first two quarters of play but CB Canarias fought back with a rousing 6-25 advantage in the third session before having to give second best. Richy Guillen led the away scoring with 18 points and was well backed by Saul Blanco with 15 and Jakim Donalson with 11 but they were all eclipsed by star player Corey Fisher with a stunning 29 points to drive the home side to victory.

A disappointing evening at Lowrys, Penalty Sharks were only able to field 2 players. Sharks started brightly with Harry taking the first frame from Rab, but then Russ sealed an early victory with a win in his last game for Lowrys before leaving for the UK. The Poison Tree ITV 1 - 21:00 - 22:00 Based on the dark and captivating novel by Erin Kelly, THE POISON TREE is a drama of human desires, betrayal and deception. The 2 x 60 minute episodes have been written by Emilia di Girolamo (EastEnders,Law & Order UK) and directed by Marek Losey. Karen Clarke (MyAnna Buring) has spent twelve years waiting for her partner Rex (Matthew Goode) to be released from prison. Now he is free, she is looking forward to settling down to normal family life in their remote seaside cottage with their 11 year old daughter Alice (Hebe Johnson). But then Karen starts to receive silent phone calls and

anonymous text messages and she can’t shake the feeling that she and her family are constantly being watched. It seems that despite her best efforts to keep their past a secret, someone somewhere knows the truth about what she and Rex did. Flash backs to the long, hot summer of 1999, when Karen was a student and first met Rex and his impossibly glamorous sister Biba (Ophelia Lovibond), gradually reveal Karen, Rex and Biba’s shared history in the crumbling Highgate mansion that they share – their intense, almost incestuous relationships, and the hedonistic party lifestyle that culminates in the tragic events that leave two people dead.

astro-barilina’s twisted horoscopes Aquarius 20 January - 18 February
Something will happen this week that will make you sit up and believe that you are here for a purpose. Then a swift rejection will make you crash to the ground quicker than you could ever hope to regain your confidence again.
Pisces 19 February - 20 March
A week of rest may be all you need for your broken leg to recover. Doctors may be stunned by a random discovery they make whilst examining you. Friends have always tried to convince you of your madness, but never more so will that be true than this coming weekend. All that you are may be called into question today when someone calls you a “Nancy”.
Aries 21 March - 19 April
The partner of your dreams will realise you are unworthy of attention. Stock up on junk food and alcohol. The medical degrees you claim you possess were not worth the 70 euros you paid for them through PayPal. Find yourself someone to settle down with. Don’t be choosy - just pick at random...
Taurus 20 April - 20 May
Show a loved one you care. In the grand scheme of things, this week rates as a 0.001. Jail sentences between 5 and 10 years may be applicable to your situation at some point of the week.
Gemini 21 May - 21 June
Gibberish may possibly occur to you at some point during the next 12 days as you attempt to do something new, or possibly old. Hoping to find love in a chippy just shows how optimistic you are.
Cancer 22 June - 22 July
A hairy back may trouble you this week, especially if it’s not your hairy back that’s in question. Although danger is never far away, you may have an exhilarating time in the coming days.
Leo 23 July - 22 August
Many of your feelings can be expressed in the form of a haggis. However, you’ll be lucky if you can find anyone who gives a flying hoot, or who actually finds them impressive in any way. Don’t believe anything you read. The media will try to control your life today. Many congratulations!
Virgo 23 August - 22 September
Your ideals are starting to shape the way you’re living, so congratulations. This week will be fraught with exciting wonderment and thrills for at least somebody you know. By agreeing to read this horoscope you may be bringing on yourself several levels of suffering and/or pleasure.
Libra 23 September - 23 October
It may become apparent this week that you are gradually becoming what you always hated. Phone your family to seek attention, they may tell you to bugger off, but it’s worth a try! The colour blue will give you cause for resentment today.
Scorpio 24 October - 21 November
You have been warned before, so don’t let this week catch you out. You don’t have the right to tell anyone what to do, no matter how much you’ve lived through or how much you earn.
Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December
Love does hide in strange places and could be waiting for you at some of the strangest places you’ve ever heard of. Or it could be hidden in a larder or an allotment, there are some strange things that go on in larders and allotments. Well where I come it does!
Capricorn 22 December - 19 January
During the week things will suddenly seem brighter, more vivid and happier. People you meet will see the difference in you, wondering “Have you had a haircut?” “Facelift?” “Liposuction?”. The truth will be much simpler and more exciting than they could possibly understand. Crazy people have been known to fantasize about people out of their league before committing heinous acts. Make sure that if you’re going to fantasize that it’s about someone who is as desperate as you before committing those heinous acts.
