Possibly the most shocking news this week is the suicide of Jacintha Saldanha. She was the nurse who was duped into connecting two Australians radio presenters to the Duchess of Cambridge’s Room, when they telephoned King Edward VII’s Hospital and impersonated The Queen and Prince Charles. The married mother of two was obviously having problems of which we know nothing, and this was the final straw. Telephone pranks have been part of our radio history for many, many years; no-one could possibly have foreseen the outcome

Tenerife Weekly - 14th December - 20th December 2012 of this particular one. The D.J’s have both said that they never expected to get through, much less get any information regarding the Duchess’ state of health, and have been interviewed on Australian television, obviously distraught. But their bosses surely have to take a huge amount of responsibility? Protocol dictates that permission either in writing or verbally has to be obtained prior to broadcast. The hospital says nobody contacted them, the radio station says it tried five times. Whoever is right, obviously no permission was obtained. Someone is to blame, but is it really the two who made the calls, or their bosses who

The launch of Primark in Tenerife is getting closer. The leading Irish fashion chain has requested a commercial licence from the director general for trade in the Canary Islands. The licence requests installation

and opening for the store at the Meridian Commercial Centre in Santa Cruz.

The official request was published in the official Canarian Newsletter (BOC) which was published last Monday. It has been submitted for public inspection for the standard fifteen days. The store will have 2,608

square meters of selling space and the negotiations are believed to be in the final stages. No one at Primark was willing to comment on the speculation, which has been rife on the Island for months, they state their “commercial policy” when asked about an exact opening date and how many jobs the latest store is likely to generate. However it is believed that they have confirmed that they will open a store in Tenerife in the first few months of 2013. Primark has two stores in Gran Canaria which are said to be doing extremely well, so the prospects are good for the Tenerife branch. The Canary Islands branches are part of the fashion chains expansion within Spain which started in 2006. Primark was founded in Dublin in 1969 and has worked consistently making current fashion at affordable prices without losing quality. The company now has around 238 stores across Europe and currently gives employment to 42,000 people. The financial growth for the first three quarters of this year was quoted at 16%.

went ahead and broadcast? Either way, two teenage children and their father have been left bereft. All in the name of entertainment? I have added a new slant to the Vivo page this week. From now on I will be publishing pictures of some of our visitors who have caught my eye. Will you be one of them? If you play in the bridge club, visited our Sunday Carvery, or been to any one of our shows, or have a penchant for dressing up as Bitter & Twisted, then yes, there is a very good chance you will be on page 31!!

See you all next week,

Iberia Strike Called Off

Iberia staff has called of the strikes scheduled to be held in the days before Christmas. The welcome news comes even though no agreement has been reached with the management, despite an eight hour meeting held this week at the headquarters of the Interconfederal Service Mediation and Arbitration (SIMA).

The unions involved; UGT, CCOO, USO, Asetma, and CTA Flight Sictpla all decided to call off the planned strikes on 14th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st December stating that they were doing so “with the airlines users in mind”. The strike committee is meeting again to decide whether a new series of planned strikes should go ahead in January after the Christmas break. Unions have said that

even though they filed a settlement proposal, Iberia’s management refused the proposal now believe that Iberia “has no real willingness to negotiate”. Unions are calling for strike action in protest of the losing of 4,500 jobs, and further paycuts of between 25 – 35% as well as a decrease in routes of around 15%. Iberia are also thought to be cutting their fleet of aircraft by 25.

The Canary Islands will end 2012 with approximately 24,000 more unemployed people than 2011, which represents a growth in unemployment of 2.2% (year on year). The number of unemployed people will rise to around 380,000 people at the end of the year which means that the Canary Islands will start 2013 with an unemployment rate of 33.7% according to the ‘Economic Situation Report’ CEOE-Tenerife for the third quarter of 2012. The department estimates that in the whole of 2012 job losses will have reached around 15,000. Tourism is the economic activity that has performed best in terms of job creation, but during 2012 all sectors (except industry) have seen job losses. Talking of the outlook for 2013, CEOE-Tenerife expects to see the number of unemployed people reach 34.9% which is around 398,000 although it expects this figure to go above 400,000 throughout the year (over 35% unemployment). According CEOE-Tenerife forecasts, the Canary Islands economy will experience a drop in GDP of -0.8 percent in 2012, two tenths less than expected, mainly because of the relative weight of tourism, but warns employers that it will not be enough to offset the fall in private and public consumption and fall in investment endesa says that it has cut off Santa Cruz’ Christmas lighting a day after it was turned on because it doesn’t have a contract, essential for billing purposes, and because the connection was illegal since it lacked a boletín. The electricity company said it was similar to the case of La Laguna’s ice rink and that it made no distinctions between public administrations or private individuals, and was only interested in legality. next year, the company e-Waste Canarias, which is made up of recycling companies, is to inaugurate the first plant in the world for the treatment and decontamination of gases and refrigerants, allowing the acidic solution from these gases to be reused in the textile and chemical industries. E-Waste has been managing the only recycling plant in the Canaries for electrical and electronic equipment at Arico since 2011. A spokesperson said that this plant, which treats sixty thousand fridges a year, is the most modern in Europe, and was created with German technology. The Tenerife Cabildo’s government council agreed on Wednesday to ask its fifteen independent delegates on the island, to block the budgets for the Canaries in Parliament, due to the lack of funds planned for the finalizing of construction and the opening of the hospitals in the north and the south of Tenerife. At a press conference, the Cabildo president, Ricardo Melchior, and his two deputies, Carlos Alonso and Aurelio Abreu, said that the complex in the north lacks sixteen point seven million euros, and the south, twenty six million. Melchior is hoping that a satisfactory agreement can be reached. The Canarian government, consisting of an alliance between the Canarian Socialist and Coalicion Canaria parties, must find another thirty million euros to satisfy the demands of Lanzarote, El Hierro and Tenerife, whose Cabildos are threatening to veto the regional budget for next year if their investments aren’t increased. Lanzarote has asked for some twelve million euros more for various projects. El Hierro wants another three million euros for ferry connections to Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and Tenerife wants at least fifteen million to complete its two hospitals. Canary Fly, a Canarian based airline, is to offer from Monday 10th December 2012, two daily flights operating from Monday to Friday between Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura and between Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. The airline is to begin operating two of the routes previously covered by the airline Islas Airways and therefore entering into direct competition with Binter Canarias. The daily connection between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will be covered by an 46 seater ATR 42. Inaugural flights between Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura, scheduled at 10.15, were being offered at 37 Euros each way while the flights between Gran Canaria and Lanzarote at 19:30 were being offered at 42 Euros. At the time of checking their website www.canaryfly.es yesterday evening, it appearing to not be working correctly.

haVe your friends told you that you can get medical treatment at the health centre in the town where you live just by showing your uK-issued european health Insurance Card? That if you were thinking of going back to the uK, you’d have to wait at least 6 months to access nhS health care? and that you need to have worked 15 years in Spain to be entitled to a Spanish pension? are you one of the thousands of “swallows” recently arrived to the Canaries, escaping the cold uK winter? and have you been told that your european health Insurance Card will cover everything from ongoing hospital treatment to repatriation back home? Well things might not be quite as they seem - the statements above are all false. Don’t listen to misleading rumours, come and hear from the experts. The British Consulate is holding a series of open events throughout the Canary Islands, to offer advice on some of the issues that matter most to the Brits that live here. Consular assistance, your pension and benefit rights as a British resident in Spain, and your responsibilities as residents in the Canaries are just some of the areas that will be covered. How to correctly register

for healthcare is an increasingly hot topic among residents and this will also be on the agenda, as will where to apply for the European Health Insurance Card. Newly appointed British Consul to the Canary Islands, Steve Jones, who will be hosting the events said: “These open days are a fantastic opportunity for our British residents in the Canaries to hear the most relevant, up to date information, from the experts. I would urge those that do attend, to ensure they pass on information to friends in the community. “ Those attending can submit questions in advance and should do so when booking their place at the event. The question and answer session will follow the main presentation. The events will take place between 29th and 31st January 2013 as follows:

Children’s Charity Sponsored Walk Thursday the 6th of December saw parents and children connected to Poppy lane nursery take part in a sponsored walk to raise money for various children’s charities here in Tenerife. The charities included are, Guardyl children’s home, Cerebral palsy unit Tenerife, Martins house and Candle lighters. The walk started off from the Apollo centre in Los Cristianos at 3pm and finished at Leonardo’s bar in Las Americas. On route both parents and children bearing collection buckets, tried to raise as much money

as possible from the generous general public and bar owners. Having got to Leonardo’s for 5pm, the little ones did really well having walked what would have seemed miles to them, had a chance to have a rest and be entertained. A good few of the islands singing artists gave up their time free of charge to put a full night’s quality entertainment for young and old. With buckets still shaking and raffle tickets being sold, made sure all the charities involved made something on the day, well done everyone who took part and thank you to all the singers who gave up their time for a very worthy cause.

Spanish nationals Roberto and JesusMaria Moreno-Ramirez were arrested by Border Force officers at Heathrow Airport in September after flying in from the Dominican Republic. Checks carried out on their luggage found that when the suitcases were emptied they were found to be unusually heavy. Both cases were x-rayed revealing they had false bottoms. Packages of white powder were found concealed in the hidden compartments. Tests carried out on the powder showed it to be cocaine, weighing just under 3 kilos and with a street value of about £300,000. The brothers aged 44 and 40 and originally from the La Rioja region of Spain, both pleaded guilty to importing a class A drug and were each sentenced to 4 ½ years in prison at Isleworth Crown Court. Assistant Director Peter

Avery, of Border Force, said: “This was a significant quantity of drugs with a potential to do a lot of damage and the sentences handed down here reflect that. Drug trafficking is a serious offence and this case should serve as a warning to others. Border Force

officers are on constant alert to prevent dangerous drugs like cocaine making it to our streets.” Anyone with information about activity they suspect may be linked to drug smuggling should call our hotline on 0800 59 5000.

pope new russian Book Outrage Surveillance Flights

The Pope’s new book, Jesus of nazereth: the infancy narratives has caused outrage after it claims that the Three Kings actually came from andalucia. Pope benedict XV1 states that the Kings came from anywhere in the region of huelva, Sevilla and Cadiz; changing previous claims

that the Kings came from the Far east

The Pope backs up his statements by alluding to sacred texts by Matthew the Evangelist and the Prophet Isaiah. He has also said there were no donkeys or camels or even oxen in the stable when Jesus was born. “In the gospels there is no mention of animals,” he writes, adding that the presence of cattle was probably invented.

It is, of course, far too late in the day for Nativity-scene organisers across Spain to make these changes, do they have been left both speechless and wondering what on earth to do with the sometimes live animals they use to decorate their belen displays every year. The Pope however said nativity scenes should not ‘give up’ these elements because ‘tradition is here to stay’.

ruSSIan military inspectors have carried out surveillance flights over Portugal and Spain under the international Open Skies Treaty, russia’s defence Ministry has said. The flights started on december 10th and continued through the week in a Tupolev Tu-154 M/

LK-1 aircraft. Starting from an airfield in Lisbon, the maximum range of the flights was 3,000 kilometres (1,865 miles).

During the flights, Russian specialists and foreign colleagues operated surveillance equipment on board the aircraft as set out in the international Open Skies Treaty. It was the 38th survey flight

this year by Russian specialists over the territories of the Open Skies Treaty member states. Russia ratified the treaty in May 2001. The Open Skies Treaty, which came into force on January 1, 2002, establishing a regime of unarmed aerial observation flights over the territories of the 34 member states to promote openness and the transparency of military forces and activities.

Manolo Blahnik, from Spain to London to New York

Manolo Blahnik is THE most famous shoe designer in the world, adored by celebrities such as Madonna, Lady Gaga and Sarah Jessica Parker. Born in La Palma in the Canary Islands in 1942, and Spain has recognized his work at the National Awards for Fashion Design. At the same time as the UK paid tribute to him at the British Fashion Awards. Manolo Blahnik has devoted the last forty years to dressing women’s feet with his famous “Manolos.” Every single pair of shoes is handmade and designed by Blahnik himself, and he personalizes each pair with a name. All in all he has designed over 20,000 pairs, some more famous than others, remember his 8 inch heels? Manolo takes inspiration; it is said, from films directed by Italian Luchino Visconti and art work from some of the great artists like Goya and El Greco The legend that is Manolo Blahnik’s began in London when he opened his first

shop in 1973. He had originally travelled to London from his native Spain to work as a set designer, but it was Diana Vreeland, then editor of Vogue who encouraged him to make shoes after seeing the models he had made for his theatrical costumes. Vreeland’s instinct happened to be right, and Blahnik’s shoes soon became a sensation in London. He was the first man to appear on the cover of British Vogue, alongside actress Angelica Houston. At the beginning of the eighties, he moved to New York he again found success in the Big Apple. The trend setters of the time; such as Bianca Jagger and Marisa Berenson, fell in love with his shoes. Since then, showbiz has become his best marketing tool. Madonna described Blahnik’s shoes as “better than sex” since “they last longer.” And let’s not forget “Sex and the City” when Carrie Bradshaw begged to a thief: “Take my Fendi bag, my ring and my watch, but please don’t take my Manolos.” Blahnik remains an intelligent and humble man whose motto is “patience, passion and work.” In an interview

with the Spanish newspaper El País, he did not hesitate to say, “I know that some women in Hollywood own 500 pairs of Manolos. What nonsense. I make shoes to last. Buying so many is obscene.”

He keeps in touch with his Spanish roots, he works in London, Milan and New York, but the place where he goes to rest and dream up his next designs is his native island, La Palma. “I can’t live without

Spain. Those are my roots, and I just can’t get them out of me. I can’t help it, I miss living there more and more,” he has confessed. After receiving the Spanish National Award for Fashion

Design, he said, “I am very grateful, very happy. And I want to donate this prize money to the Canary Islands, to a charity of La Palma, my island. At times like this, it seems absurd to keep it.”

headed by Juan Abella said: “The new genus is believed to be the first in the giant panda’s lineage.” The new discovery has been named a Kretzoiarctos, in honour of Miklos Kretzoi, who found them.

Cuts in the education budget means that around 500,000 pupils will no longer be eligible for state aid to buy essential reading material, forcing their parents to cough up for textbooks. The government has cut the budget by 1 mil-

lion Euros. Statistics show there are eight million students registered in school classes this year, a 1.7% increase on the previous school year.

15,000 more students will still receive grants despite the budget being cut by 185 million Euros compared to the 2011-2012 academic year. “The only explanation for this is that the average grant amount will be lower so that they can be spread out to more students,” said Juan Martinez, from the trade union CCOO.

no Interest In newspapers for youngsters

a reCenT study has shown that young people are reading and watching television less and using social networking to keep up with the news. The study carried out at the Jaume I university in Castellón says that the decrease in press interest among youngster aged between 16 and 30 years, means that only 28.8% read newspapers. Only 1 in 4 watches television to catch up on the latest news.

Various surveys amongst young people show the decrease in readership of printed newspapers in young readers. “Just 28.8% of this group read daily newspapers on a daily basis. The internet is playing more and more of a leading role, with special reference to social networks, in terms of news consumption amongst people aged between 16 and 30 years,” explained Andreu Casero Ripollés, Lecturer at the Department of Communication Sciences of the Jaume I University in Castellón and au-

thor of study published in the ‘Comunicar’ journal. The study indicates that 77.4% of youngsters use social networks to keep informed and, as Casero states, “They enjoy a higher percentage than any other form of media, even beating the television. This is an important revelation.” The results show a problem for newspapers in that they are losing young

readership. This has a twofold negative effect: lost audience and an ability to capture the next generation. The study was based on 549 different surveys undertaken in Catalonia, Spain on young people in different cities, of different educational standards. The majority surveyed refused to pay for current news. Only 6.2% said they would be willing to subscribe

to some form of official media resource. “This refusal goes even further in that the majority (76.3%) would visit another free webpage if their favourite internet news source started to require payment. Only 17.1% would stop their internet news consumption if there were no free means,” adds the researcher. However, young people need to keep informed and

take notice of what is happening around the world: “It seems that the way in which journalistic information is conceived is changing. The door has been opened to understanding the news as a public service that must always be available for free whenever the reader wants,” explains the author. According to the researcher, newspapers should look for

strategies to reconnect with this age group, those who are interested in the news but not using information that doesn’t tie in with their needs and interests. “Likewise, to reach out to young people, journalistic media should use social networks intensely since they are the preferred method of keeping informed amongst this population group,” he concludes.

Over 130 people were killed when Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast of America in October, and thousands more were left homeless as the storm ripped apart vast areas of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, leaving behind billions of dollars’ worth of damage. Donations raised from the concert go to the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which provides money and materials to groups helping people who were hit hardest by the storm.

Surely as part of a gruesome kidnap plot ordered by an obsessed jailed killer, according to a bizarre court case in the uS. Mark Staake, 41, and his 23-year-old nephew Tanner Ruane, both from New Mexico were allegedly retained by Dana Martin, convicted killer to murder the singer, his bodyguard and two others. Martin, who met Staake in prison, gave exact details as to how the plot was to be played out, included the use of a paisley tie (his old calling

card) to strangle the victims and the offer of a $2.5k (£1.6k) bounty for each of the men’s testicles. But before the gruesome plot could be carried out, Staake was arrested in Vermont for outstanding warrants for previous offences before any kidnap or murders could take place. A day later he was secretly recorded by police during a telephone call to his nephew Ruane, talking about the alleged plot. Ruane was arrested in New York, as Bieber was preparing for performances at Madison Square Garden. He was found with a pair of pruning shears and documents including the identities of the intended victims. 18-year-old Bieber’s management team issued a short statement on Wednesday night. “We take every precaution to protect and insure the safety of Justin and his fans,” the statement said. Ruane’s mother, Kristin Cashman, has dismissed the case as ridiculous. “My son was not planning to kidnap

or hurt anyone. He has nothing to do with any of this,” she said. “This has got to be some crazy thing Dana

Martin made up. Everything about it is made up.” Martin, who is described as being obsessed with the

Canadian singer, is alleged to have informed the authorities about the plot. Staake and Ruane face

two counts of conspiracy to commit murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit aggravated battery.

nelson Mandela “doing Very Well”

The 94-year-old South african President nelson Mandela has “made progress during the past 24 hours”, he is recovering from a lung infection which has kept him in hospital for the past 6 days. doctors attending to former President Mandela reported that he has made progress during the past 24 hours and they are satisfied with the way he is responding to treatment,” President Jacob Zuma’s office said a statement. Mandela was admitted to the 1 Military hospital in Pretoria, although it was several days before it was announced he was in hospital. There is growing concern for the man South Africans adore for being the country’s first democratically elected president who went on to unite the country after apartheid rule. Defence minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula spoke to

journalists after visiting Mr Mandela. “He’s doing very, very well,” she said. “And it is important to keep him in our prayers and also to be as calm as possible and not cause a state of panic because I think that is not what all of us need.”

Mandela was first admitted to hospital in January of this year for what was described as tests but what was an acute respiratory infection. Chaos followed the former leader’s stay at that public hospital, with journalists surrounding it

and entering wards, so it was decided that, for everyone‘s benefit, the South African military take charge of his care and the government would control any information about his health. Mandela led the struggle against apartheid and when

he was released from prison after 27 years in 1990, he was recognised worldwide for his actions. He became President in 1994 and served for five years before he retired from public life. His last public appearance was at the 2010 World

Cup soccer tournament, hosted by South Africa. Mandela stopped his involvement in politics over the last decade but has continued campaigning against AIDS. His health has caused concern in recent years.

Thousands of couples descended on Las Vegas and visited the infamous wedding chapels in order to be married on the memorable date of 12/12/12. It was the last time in most people’s lifetimes that there was such an auspicious triple-digit date, as the next one will not happen for another 89 years. Auspicious dates have always been big draws for Las Vegas. 07/07/07 was chosen by 4,333 couples for their wedding date. 3,090 couple’s chose 10/10/10 and 3,342 on 11/11/11. The average daily total is normally around 145. According to Viva Las Vegas Weddings, the number 12 is particularly lucky for couples “The ‘go-getting’ 1 and the ‘sensitive’ 2 make it a balanced number. 1 is the vibration of ‘new beginnings’ and starting things afresh,” it explained on its website. “The

2 vibration is about seeking ‘balance’ and that’s certainly something that many will struggle with - balancing the bank balance, balancing the food and beverage intake, balancing the emotions … balancing in every way.” The wedding site offers various themed weddings from The Rocky Horror show, Anthony and Cleopatra and the Blues Brothers. Other wedding themes available in Las Vegas Chapels include gangster, disco or even Austin Powers. Elvis Presley is still one of the most requested themes. Tourists from Britain, Europe, and Australia lodged wedding applications for the day, as well as thousands of local Americans. Aimee Stephens from the Chapel of the Flowers told the New York Times she would be dealing with 80 weddings instead of the normal 15. “People like being a part of something larger,” Ms Stephens said. She added that the brides also wanted “to make it easier for their husbands to remember” their wedding

date. Viva Las Vegas has put a premium on certain times of the special day, boosting the price above its budget $712.12 themed ceremony cost. It warned those searching for wedded bliss: “Please note the midnight 12/12, 12 noon, or midnight 12/13 slot must be the $1212.12 Diamond Wedding Package or higher.” Most themed weddings usually top the $2,500 mark It is also proving to be a popular day for couples in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore for tying the knot, seeking good fortune for marriages begun on the century’s last repeating date. Couples also queued to marry in many mainland Chinese cities, on the basis that 12/12/12 sounds like “Will love/will love/will love” in Chinese, the official news agency Xinhua said. The next big wedding date is the “scheduled” end of the world day, 21/12/12, according to the Mayan calendar; the end of the world apocalypse is due then.

James Arthur The X Factor Winner

James Arthur, a 24-year-old from Saltburn near Middlesborogh has won the ninth series of The X Factor beating fellow contestant Jahmene Douglas, watched by a 10,000 strong audience, as well as millions on live T.V. He looked stunned as Dermot O’Leary announced the result and could only say “wow” when asked how he felt. “I don’t what to say,” he added. The singer has won a recording contract and will now release his winner’s single, a rendition of Impossible by Barbadian singer Shontelle. After the announcement, he was hugged by Judge Nicole Scherzinger, who mentored both him and runnerup Douglas. She jumped for joy, obviously delighted by his success.

The two finalists performed two songs during the programme, and each performed the song they would release as a single if they won in their final bid to win the public’s vote. Douglas performed with a choir as he sang his soulful take on Let It Be by The Beatles before Arthur sang

15

Impossible. Judge Tulisa Contostavlos, who admitted she wanted Arthur to win, told him: “From the second I saw you perform I got you. I get you. You’ve been to the depths in life, the deep, dark depths and you’ve come out. You’re an inspirer.”

Arthur’s single is already number one in the iTunes chart based on downloads. All profits from sales of the single will go to the charity Together For Short Lives, which gives families with children suffering from life-threatening and lifelimiting conditions support. Arthur is now 5-1 to be the

Christmas number one. Arthur said afterwards: “I am absolutely overwhelmed to have won The X Factor. I am lost for words. To have been be able to perform my winner’s single was just insane. I love the song and am so glad that proceeds of the single will be going to such a great cause.”

X Factor third place finalist, 24-year-old Christopher Maloney, from Liverpool, says he was “bullied” and subjected to a “witch hunt” since finishing the TV talent contest. He was voted off the show on Saturday night after getting fewer votes than eventual winner James Arthur and runner-up Jahmene Douglas. He had been voted in as the show’s ‘wildcard’ during the first week, securing 63.5 per cent of the vote.

He did not appear in Sunday’s final show with all of the other contestants,, prompting speculation he had turned up at the studio with a hangover for rehearsals and proceeded to insult a fellow contestant. He told fans on Twitter to “take no notice” of newspaper reports, accusing them of writing “sensational headlines”, before posting: “Yes I am being bullied! Big time. There u go xx witch hunt xx.” He later added: “Thank u all so much for ur love help and support. Thinking everyone wants a final dig. Disgusting xx love u na nite xx.” Figures released by ITV revealed he won the most number of votes for every one of the first seven weeks, only falling behind Arthur and Douglas as the show went into its final week.

Prank Call Nurse Tragic Suicide Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse who died after a hoax call to the hospital treating the Duchess of Cambridge was found hanging by a scarf, an inquest has found. She was discovered on Friday morning in her room at staff accommodation close to the hospital in west London. Jacintha took the initial call, from two Australian Radio D.J’S as part of a prank, and put it through to colleague who divulged private information about Kate’s treatment. It is understood that the nurse, who was married and had two teenage children, left three suicide notes. 2Day FM presenters Michael Christian and Mel Greig impersonated the Queen and Prince Charles as part of their radio programme, when they called King Edward VII’s Hospital and managed to get through to the ward where the Duchess was being treated. News of the nurse’s death led to a huge backlash against the two and a spokesperson for the Radio Sandy Kaye said: “We’re seriously concerned about their welfare and we’re doing whatever we can to help them.” In emotional interviews on Australian TV networks, presenters Mel Greig and Michael Christian insisted

that their prank call to the King Edward VII’s Hospital in central London had “never meant” to get that far and they had expected staff to hang up on them. Speaking during an interview a tearful Ms Greig told Today Tonight on Australia’s Channel Seven: “There’s nothing that can make me feel worse than what I feel right now.” And for what I feel for the family. We’re so sorry that this has happened to them. I remember my first question was ‘Was she a mother? I have thought about this a million times in my head, that I just wanted to reach out to them and just give them a big hug and say sorry. I hope they are OK, I really do.” Mr Christian said he was “gutted, shattered, heartbroken” by the nurse’s death. “I just hope that they get the love, the support, the care that they need. We are shattered, heartbroken and our deepest sympathy goes to the family, friends and all those people affected. Mel and myself are incredibly sorry for the situation and what’s happened The DJs said they had never expected their fake call would be put through to the Duchess’s ward. They had expected it to last 30 seconds, get told off and have the phone hung up on them. A sombre Ms Greig said: “Not for a second did we expect to speak to anyone. We expected to be hung up on. On receiving the telephone call about the nurses tragic death Greig said: “I wanted to

Prank Calls Right Or Wrong?

One of Britain’s most notorious DJs told Sky News the death of a nurse after a prank call to the hospital treating the Duchess of Cambridge could mark the end of such radio wind-ups. Steve Penk built his career winding up both members of the public and high profile celebrities in his 1998 radio show on Capital Radio. He even managed to get through to Tony Blair. However he now believes the tragic consequences of this particular radio could change the entire radio industry. He

just reach out to them and to give them a big hug and say sorry. Not a minute goes by that we don’t think about the family and what they are going through, and the thought we may have played a part is gut-wrenching.” Ms Saldanha’s family, both in the UK and India, paid trib-

ute to the mother of two teenagers. Her daughter Lisha wrote on Facebook, “I miss you, I love you”, while husband Ben Barboza has set up a tribute page on the social networking site. He wrote: “I am devastated with the tragic loss of my beloved wife Jacintha in tragic cir-

told Sky News: “I think there will be huge fallout. I think it will be, for want of a better phrase, the death of the wind-up phone call. “Ofcom, the media regulator, will wrap it in so much red tape that it will make it almost impossible to get these things on the air, which I think is a shame because they can be entertaining.” Mr Penk, has cancelled his latest prank show after the hoax call to the hospital treating the duchess. But he does feel sympathy for the two DJs who are now being vilified for their role in the stunt: “You can’t predict something like this, I genuinely feel very sorry for them. I think it is unfair that at the moment the blame is at their doorstep.”

cumstances. She will be laid to rest in Shirva, India.” Her sister-in-law Celin D’Souz, who lives in India said: “I will really miss her a lot. She was a good-natured sister-in-law. I cannot forget her, she was so good.” The hospital at the centre of the storm condemned the stunt as “truly appalling” while a prominent Conservative MP has called for the DJs to be sacked. Lord Glenarthur, Chairman of King Edward VII’s Hospital said in a letter to the Australian radio station 2Day FM’s parent company, that he wanted to “protest” against the “extremely foolish” gag. The hospital says station that none of the bosses from the station spoke with any senior staff before broadcasting the call. However, the 2Day FM insist that five attempts were made to contact London’s King Edward VII’s Hospital about the prank call before it aired. “Following the hoax call, the radio station did not speak

to anyone in the hospital’s senior management or anyone at the company who handles our media enquiries,” a hospital spokesman said. Rhys Holleran, head of the station’s parent company Southern Cross Austereo, said he was satisfied that the appropriate checks had been carried out before the pre-recorded call was broadcast. “It is absolutely true to say that we actually did attempt to contact those people on multiple occasions,” he told Fairfax Radio, an Australian broadcaster. “We rang them up to discuss what we had recorded ... we attempted to contact them on no less than five occasions ... we wanted to speak to them about it.” The radio station’s owner, Southern Cross Austero Media, has suspended advertising on 2Day FM until further notice, ended Ms Greig and Mr Christian’s Hot 30 show, and suspended prank calls across the company.

Cheryl Cole Sues X Factor

Former X Factor judge, Cheryl Cole has filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles claiming £1.4m ($2.3m) from the makers of the American version of The X Factor. She was dropped from the show by Simon Cowell because producers felt Americans would not be able to understand the former Girls Aloud singer’s Geordie accent. She was paid £1.1m for the first series but her lawsuit claims that her contract entitles her to be paid for the second series even though she had been sacked. She now wants Blue Orbit Productions to pay her £1.25m agreed salary plus her promised wardrobe, stylist, accommodation and living costs. The lawsuit which runs to 11 pages was filed with the California Superior Court

in LA on last week and was published online by The Hollywood Reporter. Cole claims that she had a ‘pay-or-play’ contract for two seasons, which means she should be paid for both regardless of whether she appeared. She also wants Blue Orbit to pay for first-class, round-trip airline tickets between London and LA and for the cost of her hired security. The lawsuit also asks for interest on the money, legal fees and “further relief as the Court may deem just and appropriate”. After Cole’s sacking Simon Cowell told Piers Morgan in an interview: “I took the view along with a few other people that she would be more comfortable back in the UK.” He said the decision to sack her was his: “That’s what you have to do when you produce - you have to make decisions in the moment, and I take full responsibility for it.” Nicole Sherzinger replaced Cole as a judge after just two episodes.

Manchester “Bring Food Day” Derby Disgrace Cannabis Brownies

A total of nine people were charged in connection with last Sunday’s Manchester Derby, while four further arrests were made over incidents connected to the game, but so far, police have been unable to catch the fan who threw a coin at Rio Ferdinand, cutting the United defender’s eye. Chief Inspector of the Greater Manchester Police, Steve Howard, said: “To have just 13 arrests for a crowd of this size and a match of this proportion is a testa-

ment to the policing operation we put in place. Despite fierce rivalry and high tension there was no major disorder. However, we will continue to investigate the coin throwing incident and are determined to work with the club to bring the perpetrator to justice.” All of the men, who were arrested at the Etihad Stadium, are due before Manchester City Magistrates’ Court on January 4. One of the nine men charged, one has said he was sorry for running on to the pitch after Robin van Persie’s late winning goal for United. Matthew Stott, a landscape gardener, who slipped

up as he ran on to the field before being restrained by City goalkeeper Joe Hart, issued a statement through his solicitors. He said: “I would like to apologise to all those affected by my actions yesterday, particularly Mr Ferdinand and the other players. “I am extremely ashamed of my actions. I have let myself down, my family down, my fellow fans down and Manchester City Football club. “I intend to write personally to Mr Ferdinand to express my extreme regret and apologies and also apologise to Manchester United and their fans. I would like to thank Joe Hart for his actions when I came on the pitch.”

21-year-old Thomas Ricardo Cunningham and 19-year-old Mary Elizabeth have been arrested after allegedly giving cannabislaced brownies to fellow classmates and a professor as part of a “bring food day” at the University of Colorado. Police were called after the history professor and two students needed hospital treatment, after complaining of dizziness and losing consciousness. Several other students fell ill. The pair were arrested on charges that included second-degree assault. University of Colorado spokesman Bronson Hilliard as saying: “Anybody who thinks this is cute, anybody who thinks that this was funny, is going to face pretty severe sanctions.”

hannibal daunted? Surely not?

hITChCOCK star Sir anthony hopkins has admitted playing the role of Sir alfred hitchcock was “daunting”. The film, which premiered in London, is based on the director’s private relationship with wife alma reville during the making of the 1960 hit film Psycho. Speaking at the premiere at British Film Institute on the South Bank, Sir Anthony, said he was “obviously a little nervous” about the role. “I didn’t want to hear my voice back or see any

of it, I wouldn’t see any playback because I didn’t want to shock myself.”. The 74-year-old Oscarwinner added: “I saw the film when it was finally cut together and I was very pleased with it. It was a tough role to play, just tricky because everyone knows him and he has been such a formidable presence in our living rooms through the years and probably the most famous director of all time - so it was daunting.” Leading lady in the film, Dame Helen Mirren, 67, said she was having a “pretty good year”, she has worked with Sir Anthony in Hitch-

cock and Al Pacino in forthcoming biopic about music producer Phil Spector. She described her character in Hitchcock as the director’s “artistic and domestic rock”. She said: “People say there were four hands on Hitchcock’s movies - and two of them were Alma’s.” First-time director Sacha Gervasi, described how extraordinary it was to be working with two of British cinema’s most respected actors: “I felt like I was directing them, but I was also in the front row of the National Theatre watching this unbelievable performance, so it was a fantastic experience.”

dna database Set to launch

PrIMe Minister, david Cameron is set to ”push boundaries” by launching a £100 million project for a dna database that will hold genetic details of every person in britain. 100,000 patients with cancer and other rare diseases will have their DNA fully mapped in an effort to revolutionise NHS treatment. The project, which will run for the next three to five years, is aimed at saving thousands of lives, but there are privacy concerns. Cameron wants to introduce mainstream genetic sequencing for the first time. “Britain has often led the world in scientific breakthroughs and medical innovations, from the first CT scan and test-tube baby through to decoding DNA,” he said. “By unlocking the power of DNA data, the NHS will lead the global race for better tests, better drugs and above all better care. We are turning an important scientific breakthrough into a potentially life-saving reality for NHS patients across the country. If we get this right, we could transform how we diagnose and treat our most complex diseases not only here but across the world, while enabling our best scientists to discover the next wonder drug or breakthrough technology.” GeneWatch, a campaign group fighting for genetic science and technologies to be used in the public interest, has criticised the project saying that anyone with access to the database could

use the genetic codes to identify and track every individual on it and their relatives. There are also fears it could be used by commercial organisations like drug companies But Downing Street stressed that the genome sequencing would be voluntary and patients will be able to opt out without it affecting their NHS care, adding the data would be “completely anonymised before it is stored”. The Government’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor Dame Sally Davies, said the NHS already analyses single genes in cancer tests and to check patients’ risk of suffering side effects from treatment. “At the moment, these tests focus on diseases caused by changes in a single gene,” she said. “This funding opens up the possibility of being able to look at the three billion DNA pieces in each of us so we can get a greater understanding of the complex relationship between our genes and lifestyle.” The £100m, which comes from NHS budgets, will be spent on training genetic scientists, mapping patients’ DNA, and creating systems for handling the information. It is estimated that the cost per person for sequencing a human genome is around £1,000 per person.

Boot Camp – School Style

Ex-soldiers are to be used in schools in an effort to pass on military-style values of teamwork, discipline and leadership under a new £1.9m Government initiative. Ministers hope the project, aimed at engaging and motivating troubled teens through mentoring in class as well as outdoor activities, will improve their behaviour as well as their grades. The project covers four areas and will use activities including one-toone mentoring, military-style obstacle courses and team-building exercises to pass on values taught in the military to disruptive children. It is also hoped they will be able to reintegrate pupils and prepare them for educational courses and jobs. Primary school children will also benefit in their move to secondary education. Last year, only 1.5% of pupils who have been excluded from mainstream education achieved at least five GCSEs at grade C or above, including English and maths, 40 times worse than those in mainstream education. The project is part of a wider aim to bolster links between the Armed Forces and schools, including expansion of the school-based cadets, developing the Troops to

Teachers programme and an increase in the Service Children’s Premium for service children. Education Secretary Michael Gove said: “Every child can benefit from the values of a military ethos. Self-discipline and teamwork are at the heart of what makes our Armed Forces the best in the world - and are exactly what all young people need to succeed.

Exclusion from school should never mean exclusion from education. These projects are helping pupils in alternative provision reach their full potential and are helping to close the attainment gap.” £600,000 of the funding is going to Commando Joes’ in Cheshire; £700,000 to Challenger Troop in Tunbridge Wells, Kent; £400,000 to Knowsley Skills Academy in

Prescot, Merseyside; and £200,000 to Newcastle-based SkillForce. Mike Hamilton, director of Commando Joes’, and former bomb disposal expert, said: “The instructors are all ex-military personnel - they are role models and kids look up to and aspire to be like them. When we go to a school playground children hang on every word. In some of the deprived ar-

eas we work in, young people have not got grassy areas or anywhere to go. When they come to our sessions they get a chance to socialise in a different way, to be part of a team. Our motto is No Child Left Behind - we will work with every child and young person to help them feel motivated to learn and be part of their school and community again.”

Apple Map Whale Skin Infused Cocktail, Anyone? App Warning

Australian police are warning motorists not to use Apple’s map software after a number of people ended up lost and stranded in scorching temperatures. Drivers trying to find the south-eastern town of Mildura became lost after following the map system, which locates it about 43 miles (70km) from where it actually is. One man was stranded for more than 24 hours in temperatures of up to 46C, and three more had to be rescued. Tests on the mapping system show that Mildura is wrongly listed as being in the middle of the Murray Sunset National Park. Such is their concern; Mildura police have now issued an official warning on their website. “Police are extremely concerned as there is no water supply within the park and temperatures can reach as high as 46 degrees, making this a potentially life-threatening issue,” it says. “Some of the motorists located by police have been stranded for up to 24 hours without food or water and have walked long distances through dangerous terrain to get phone reception.” Inspector Simon Clemence told Australia’s ABC News that he is concerned that people using the Apple Maps app could find themselves in trouble. “If it was a 45-degree day, someone could actually die,” he said. “It’s quite a dangerous situation, so we would be calling for people not to use the new Apple iPhone mapping system if they’re travelling from south Australia to Mildura.” Police

have contacted Apple in relation to the issue. Apple initially used Google as its map provider with the launch of its iOS 6 software for the iPhone and iPad but later cancelled. It was criticised by users for putting towns and cities in the wrong place and spelling locations wrongly. Apple CEO Tim Cook was forced to apologise for the glitches, and the manager who oversaw the software update has since left the company.

The Nightjar bar in Hoxton, East London was raided by police for allegedly serving cocktails infused with illegal whale skin. The cocktail called “Moby Dick” on the bar menu was described as containing Laphroaig whisky, Drambuie, ale and bitters, along with a “whale skin infusion”.

Police were tipped-off that the bar was serving whale skin illegally, and the subsequent raid was carried out by officers from the Met’s Wildlife Crime Unit and an officer from the United Kingdom Border Force. “One item from the premises was seized,” said a police spokesman. “This has been sent for analysis.” No arrests have been made. No one at the bar was available for comment, however the Sunday Times newspaper reported that the bar’s management was

unaware that the drink may have contained an illegal ingredient until the raid. There is a Europe-wide ban

on the sale of whale meat and products, except under strict restrictions in Greenland and Denmark.

Merry tWeetMaS The country’s senior bishops are set to tweet their Christmas day sermons for the first time this year in a Christmas Tweet campaign. The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams (@ lambethpalace), the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu (@johnsentamu) and Archbishop Designate Justin Welby (@bishopofdurham) will also be joined by congregations and clergy from across the Church of England (@c--of--e). On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, churchgoers in the 16,000 parishes of the Church of England are being encouraged to live tweet the joy and meaning of Christmas to the 10 million UK Twitter users. Rev Arun Arora (@RevArun), director of communications at the Archbishops’ Council, said: “This is a brilliant opportunity for parishes to take the good news of the first Christmas out of churches and into people’s lives and homes. “It is the first time that the joy and excitement of Christmas will have been broadcast

widely on Twitter. There are large numbers of social media enthusiasts to be found in pews and pulpits across the country. “This is an invitation for them to join together to celebrate the joy of the Christ Child coming into the world, taking the real meaning of Christmas to a new digital audience. Churches from all denominations will be invited to broadcast their services via Twitter.” A Twitter spokesperson said: “Twitter brings you closer to the things you are passionate about - and for millions of people across the globe that is faith. “It is fantastic to see the Church of England embracing Twitter and using it to share their Christmas message with new audiences.” The campaign will use the hashtage #ChristmasStartsWithChrist, which goes live on Christmas Eve. Tweets can be expected from carol, crib and midnight services, before carrying on into Christmas morning when the highlights of the sermons at Canterbury Cathedral, York Minster and Durham Cathedral will be tweeted.

Antarctica Exploration Final preparations are underway to drill 3km through Antarctic ice to a lake, cut off from the rest of the world for up to half a million years. A 12-man team of British scientists hope to find evidence of life in Lake Ellsworth that have evolved in to withstand the cold, lack of nutrients and total darkness. The scientists also believe that the lake could also hold clues to the Earth’s past climate. The team is made up of scientists, engineers and other specialists from nine universities, the British Antarctic Survey and the National Oceanography Centre are part of The Lake Ellsworth Consortium, the £7m mission has been funded by the Natural Environment Research Council.

The team will melt a 36-cm wide borehole through the ice using a hot-water drill. By pumping 90,000 litres of water at high pressure through a continuous 3.5km hose, this should break through the ice in three or four days. Chris Hill of the British Antarctic Survey said the mood in the camp was good. “We are just a few days away from starting the drilling. That will be the point of no return,” he said. “We are doing last minute checks, connecting all the pipes and electricity together, checking out all the systems we have been developing over the last three and a half years that have never been put into such extreme conditions before. So it’s quite a tense time at the moment, but everything seems to be going very well.” Lake Ellsworth, around the same size of Windermere in Cumbria, located under a sheet of ice in the West Antarctic. Daytime tempera-

tures are minus 25 degrees Celsius, with winds gusting up to 100mph. The team moved almost 100 tonnes of equipment 280km across the ice to reach the site. Their cargo includes probes that will be used to collect water samples and cut a three-metre long sediment core at the bottom of the lake. The equipment, designed from

scratch, has been cleaned to space-industry standards to avoid contaminating the water of the lake. The scientists hope to find microbes in the lake bed, which could have been cut off from the main line of evolution for millions of years and researchers want to know how they survive, and if they produce any unique chemical compounds. “Finding evidence of such

compounds would show us that if life can withstand even the deepest, darkest and most isolated conditions for more than a million years, then it has the ability to exist anywhere - and by that I mean not just on Earth.” Says Professor John Parnell from the School of Geosciences at Aberdeen University. Chris Hill said the sediment core will act as a time record

and possibly show that Antarctica was once far warmer. “There is a strong body of evidence that the ice sheet has collapsed at some point in our history causing a significant sea level rise across the planet,” he said. “It is known to be unstable now and is likely to collapse at some point in the future. We just don’t know when or what could cause it.”

without the bitterness of regular coffee. My theory is that a natural fermentation process takes place in the elephant’s gut,” said Mr Dinkin. “That fermentation imparts flavours you wouldn’t get from other coffees.” The resulting coffee is reported to be similar in taste to civet coffee, or Kopi Luwak, another expensive brand extracted from the waste of the weasel-like civet. But the elephants’ massive stomach provides vast quantities! In the jungle where the herd is kept, conservationists were sceptical about the idea. “My initial thought was about caffeine - won’t the elephants get wired on it or addicted to coffee?” said John Roberts, director of elephants at the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant

Foundation, a refuge for rescued elephants. “As far as we can tell there is definitely no harm to the elephants.” It now earns 8% of the coffee’s total sales, which help to pay for the elephant’s

healthcare. Mr Dinkin said he worked with a Canadian-based veterinarian who did blood tests on zoo elephants proving that they don’t absorb any caffeine from eating raw

coffee cherries. “I thought it was well worth a try because we’re looking for anything that can help elephants to make a living,” said Mr Roberts, who says the cost of keeping an elephant is

around £625 a month. The coffee costs £312 per pound, the most expensive in the world, and so far only available in a very few luxury, specially chosen hotels. Not available in Starbucks as yet.

The Most Expensive Brew In The World An exotic new coffee which promises an earthy flavour and is smooth on the palate, is made from the beans eaten by a herd of 20 Thai elephants and taken a day later from their dung, to produce the world’s most expensive coffee. Apparently, a reaction inside the elephant creates what the makers of Black Ivory Coffee calls the coffee’s unique taste: “When an elephant eats coffee, its stomach acid breaks down the protein found in coffee, which is a key factor in bitterness,” said Blake Dinkin, a Canadian who has spent £190,000 developing the coffee. You end up with a cup that’s very smooth

deBut alBuM OnLy boys aloud, who launched themselves onto an unsuspecting public on britain’s Got Talent, have just released their debut album. The boys, aged between 14 and 19, who made it to third place in the competition, are from the Welsh Valleys, scene of long term unemployment and a serious lack of opportunities for its youngsters since the collapse of the mining industry. The man behind the group is conductor, director Tim Rhys-Evan, also responsible for the group Only Men Aloud says of the area; “Everything was taken away. Nothing was left ... of what there was when I was a child. It makes it sound like I was brought up in Dickensian Britain or something but there was a lovely sense of com-

munity and the choir was part of that, same as the rugby club ... and the men’s working men’s clubs and all of that. “Seeing this breakdown in community I just thought it was a great opportunity to bring the choir back.” The boys all come from local schools in South Wales, and have a variety of different backgrounds and abilities. William Thomas, a member of the choir says it has been life changing: “I can’t really put into words how much it’s helped me grow up and mature as a person but every last bit of it has been incredible and I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Mr Rhys-Evans says he has seen a huge change for the better in many of the boys. “I just hope by planting a seed in these lads’ minds now it’s something they can take through the rest of their lives. Even if they don’t, I just hope the experience they’ve had will make them strive for something better in their own lives and hopefully, if nothing else, we’ve created some fantastic memories.” The choir will be joining forces with Only Men Aloud, in Llandudno for a concert on December 22 and at the Wales Millennium Centre on December 24 and 30.

notorious B.I.g. death report released

LOS angeles police have landed themselves in hot water after they released the coroners finding report of the rapper notorious b.I.G. who was murdered fifteen years ago, without prior warning to his family. The Police apologised and blamed “an administrative error”.

The hip-hop star, real name Christopher Wallace, was killed in a drive-by shooting after leaving a music event in Los Angeles in 1997 and the case remains unsolved to this day. Captain Billy Hayes, of the Robbery-Homicide Division who are investigating the killing, said in a statement: “Detectives had intended to notify Mr Wallace’s family prior to releasing the report. Our detectives personally spoke with the Wallace family ... and apologised for not notifying them.” The LAPD said it hoped that making the coroner’s findings public would help new information come forward. “Obviously this has been a challenging case for us to solve. We hope that witnesses or other people with information will come forward and give us the

clues we need to solve this case,” said Capt Hayes. The 23-page document details the direction of each of the four shots that hit him. The bullet that actually killed him went through his left lung, heart and colon. The shooting has been the subject of police and FBI inves-

tigations and is still one of Los Angeles’ highest-profile unsolved murders. It was thought to be the subject of a feud between rival record labels At the time, federal agents conducted a bi-coastal search for the killer, but prosecutors decided that

there was not enough evidence for a case in 2005. Agents looked into whether any Los Angeles police officers had been involved in the shooting, which came months after another rap superstar, Tupac Shakur, was shot dead in Las Vegas. In March 2011, the FBI

electronically released files about the investigation, which shed new light about what the investigators took to try to find those responsible for the rapper’s death. They conducted surveillance and interviews in Los Angeles, San Diego as well as New York.

Wallace’s family filed a federal lawsuit against Los Angeles, and a 2005 trial ended with a mistrial after lawyers discovered the city had hidden LAPD documents. The family dismissed a lawsuit in 2010 in order for the FBI and other agencies to pursue new leads in the case.

M u LT I M I L L I O n a I r e , Jeremy Paxton, has pledged his time, his money, and his personal helicopter to the fire service in Wiltshire. The 52-yearold property tycoon will cover a sevenfigure sum to cover the costs involved for one year: “It gives me a chance to really pursue my love of flying and do something useful at no cost to the fire and rescue service and at no cost to the taxpayer. So I thought: what’s not to like about it? Let’s give it a go. I was surprised to find out that the fire service doesn’t actually have a flying fire engine. If something can be added to their existing asset base by volunteer pilots with volunteer helicopters that end up saving one life, it will be worthwhile. and I think it will save many.” The property millionaire also

aims to get his own squadron of millionaire helicopter pilots who could, at their own expense, help other fire services across the country if the trial proves successful. From April, he will be on call for three days per week at the 550-acre Lower Mill Estate of holiday homes in Cirencester - which he owns, If his services are required, he is capable of being airborne in three minutes. He will fly to the Fire and Rescue Headquarters in Trowbridge to collect staff and specialist equipment before setting off to the fire involved. He will not actually be working as fireman but will carry personnel and specialist kit to the site. The helicopter will be capable of carrying equipment to deal with four types of emergency, road accidents, animal rescue, forest fires, and deep water rescue. At twice the size of the Isle of Wight, fire crews can take over an hour to reach some parts of Wiltshire. Mr Paxton and his helicopter can reach any part of the county in under 16 minutes. But Tam McFarlane from the Fire Brigades Union is not supportive of the idea:

“The public rely entirely on a professional fire and rescue service so we have to be accountable to the public. Accountable financially to the public as well. “We can’t rely on multimillionaires giving us charity. Where will it end? Is Roman Abramovich going to lend us his yacht for floods? “Clearly, it’s untenable.” However the chief of Wiltshire’s fire service, Simon

Lucky Lottery Winner

A man from Arizona has won the second half of a £366 million jackpot in the US Powerball lottery and revealed it was only the second time he had played this year. The man, who has chosen to remain anonymous, is married, in his 30s, and insists that he wants to keep working and live a normal life. He said: “I like my job, I’d like to continue working,’” but he is “realistic about how his life would change,” said Lottery executive director Jeff Hatch-Miller.

“I gather from his manner and general discussion that he would prefer to have the kind of lifestyle that he had ... not necessarily the same house or the same car, but in general the same kind of anonymity.” Spokesman Karen Bach said: “He has lived in Arizona for a year. He and his wife moved from Pennsylvania. “He said that he used to play Powerball regularly in Pennsylvania, but in Arizona only played twice.” Lottery winners can accept the prize money in instalments over several years, or a reduced one-off sum. He chose to have the jackpot paid immediately, and will receive £119m before tax; he will actually take home about 70% of the cash after tax £84m.

The anonymous winner came forward after a mechanic from Missouri claimed the first winning ticket last week. He had bought $10-worth of tickets from a shop in Fountain Hills, north east of Phoenix, last Wednesday, just hours before the winning num-

bers were drawn for the second biggest jackpot in US lottery history. “The winner then placed the ticket in his vehicle, and he put it on the sun visor in his car and left it there,” Ms Bach said. The next morning, after he heard that there was a winner in Arizo-

na, he checked the Arizona Lottery website. “He discovered that he had a winning ticket. He and his wife couldn’t believe it. They checked the numbers over and over again, and were just absolutely shocked. He spent last weekend just taking it all in, and trying to

27

recover from the shock.” Friday’s winner could have waited but decided to come forward this calendar year, “because he did have concerns about the uncertainty with the fiscal cliff in 2013”, which might cost him more in tax, said Ms Bach.

RASCAL Test Flight Merry Christmas From Downing Street

The US Army has made history by successfully testing a flight by an automated Black Hawk helicopter. There were pilots aboard the aircraft which took to the skies over the Diablo Mountain Range in San Jose, California. But all manoeuvres were carried out autonomously, with the JUH-60A Black Hawk navigating its way through a 23-mile course of hills and valleys. Dubbed the RASCAL - Ro-

torcraft Aircrew Systems Concept Airborne Laboratory - the aircraft was equipped with a range of technologies, including computers and sensors, for it to operate on its own. It was able to sense its surrounding terrain, assess risk, avoid obstacles, process statistics, as well as fly autonomously during the two-hour exercise. The helicopter maintained an altitude of 200 and 400 feet at an average speed of 40 knots and identified a safe

landing spot within a forest clearing. It also approached and hovered at 60 feet during the final phase of the testflight, organised by the Army Research, Development and Engineering Command’s Aviation and Missile Centre. “This was the first time terrain-aware autonomy has been achieved on a Black Hawk,” said Lieutenant Colonel Carl Ott, chief of the flight projects office at AMRDEC’s aero flight dynamics directorate.

David Cameron and his wife Samantha have once again defied tradition when choosing their official Christmas card by choosing a photograph of a summer event. The Prime Minister has chosen an image featuring the 2012 Olympics rather than festive spirit this year.

Kate Nesbitt, Olympic Torch bearer and war hero, whose treatment of wounded troops while under fire won her the first Military Cross to be awarded to a woman in the Royal Navy, features on the card which shows the Cameron’s waving on the steps of Number 10. Last year Mr Cameron’s card featured an image from a Royal Wedding street party. Ed Miliband’s card shows a relaxed family portrait show-

ing the Labour leader, his wife Justine and their children Daniel, three, and Sam, two, photographed at home. Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has stuck with tradition by using cards designed by children. The Liberal Democrat leader picked a seasonal card featuring Father Christmas, a snowman and a Christmas tree drawn by eightyear-old Caitlin Costello, a patient at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Fly Me to the Most Famo the Moon for Sir £993 Million!

IT’S a bargain, for only £933m, the Golden Spike Company, a company formed by former nasa executives, is offering trips for two people, to fly to the moon. If they can afford it. The company aims to set up twenty launches before 2020. The Golden Spike Company features space veterans amongst its personnel and the chairman is Apollo flight director Gerry Griffin, who was in charge of the Johnson Space Centre. Advisers include space shuttle veterans, Hollywood directors, former

Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich, former UN ambassador Bill Richardson and engineerauthor Homer Hickam. Golden Spike has talked to other countries which have shown interest, so says company president and former Nasa associate administrator Alan Stern. He said he thinks that countries like South Africa, South Korea and Japan would be his clients. “It’s not about being first. It’s about joining the club,” he said. He added: “We’re kind of cleaning up what Nasa did in the 1960s. We’re going to make a commodity of it in the 2020s.” Golden Spike y will buy existing

rockets and capsules and develop new space suits and a lunar lander, he said. Nasa’s last trip to the Moon was 40 years ago, and since the US won the “space race” against the former Soviet Union there has been little official interest in going back there. President Barack Obama cancelled Nasa’s return to the Moon, saying that America had been there, done that. Several private space companies have started up in recent years. They hope to follow the success of Space X, which works under a contract with Nasa to take cargo to the International Space Station.

ous Astrologer In The World r Patrick Moore L

egendary astronomer and broadcaster Sir Patrick Moore died peacefully at his home in Selsey, West Sussex, aged 89. A statement issued by his family said: “After a short spell in hospital last week, it was determined that no further treatment would benefit him, and it was his wish to spend his last days in his own home, Farthings, where he today passed on, in the company of close friends and carers and his cat Ptolemy.” “Over the past few years, Patrick, an inspiration to generations of astronomers, fought his way back from many serious spells of illness and continued to work and write at a great rate, but this time his body was too weak to overcome the infection which set in, a few weeks ago. He was able to perform on his world record-holding TV Programme The Sky at Night right up until the most recent episode. His executors and close friends plan to fulfil his wishes for a quiet ceremony of interment, but a farewell event is planned for what

would have been Patrick’s 90th birthday in March 2013.” He had fronted BBC TV’s popular The Sky At Night programme for over 40 years, providing fascinating insights for fans and experts. Sir Patrick missed only one episode since 1957 when it started, due to food poisoning. Speaking at a party in April to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the BBC programme, Sir Patrick said he hoped the stargazing series would continue “indefinitely”. The most famous astrologer in the world had been using a wheelchair and was unable to look through a telescope. His trademark monocle, unique delivery and occasional performances on the xylophone made him a familiar target for satirists and impressionists, but his scientific credentials were never in doubt. Personal friend and fan Queen Guitarist Brian May paid tribute to a “dear friend and a kind of father figure to me”. He said: “Patrick will be mourned by the many to whom he was a caring uncle, and by all who loved the delightful wit and clarity of his writings, or enjoyed his fearlessly eccentric persona in public life. Patrick is irreplaceable. There will never be another Patrick Moore. But we were lucky enough to get one.”

Sir Patrick Moore was knighted in 2001, but born Patrick Caldwell Moore was born on March 4, 1923. He was educated privately, because of illness. His interest in astronomy was sparked at the age of six when he picked up a book called Guide To The Solar System, published in 1898. “I picked up that book by sheer luck and sat down by the armchair and read it through. I understood most of it - which wasn’t bad for a six-year-old.” When he was eight he received a 1908 model Woodstock typewriter, he used it to write all of his 170 and claimed he could type at 90 words a minute, using only two fingers. At the age of 11 he was nominated as a member of the British Astronomical Association, the youngest ever member. When he reached 13, he had his first paper published, about small craters on the Moon. Exactly 50 years later, he was made president of the association. He served with the Royal Air Force from 1940 to 1945, as a navigator in Bomber Command. To get into the armed forces at only 16 he lied about his age and faked

his medical. The girl he was to marry was killed during the war in an air raid. He said since: “My whole life ended in one day. These things happen. You accept them. As far as I was concerned, that was that. It’s the reason I have never married. But I don’t like living alone.” Sadly, he did live alone for most of his life. Sir Patrick, despite an occasional irascible nature and a tendency towards eccentricity, will be remembered by those who knew him well as a kindly, modest man. He once said he would like to be remembered as an amateur astronomer who played cricket and the xylophone. He would have loved to have gone into space himself. “But I’m the wrong age, the wrong nationality and the wrong medical grade. Besides,” he joked, “it would need a very massive rocket to launch me.” He used to gaze at the stars and say: “We are a very, very small speck in the universe, about as important as a single ant in the whole of the world.” TV personalities come and go, but Sir Patrick, famous for his monocle, outlasted them all.

The British Company is owned by owned by Kuwait’s The Investment Dar, quoted the value of the group had increased to £780m, compared with £630m before the deal. Chairman David Richards said he was delighted with the investment by Investindustrial, which used to own Italian motorcycle maker Ducati.”Investindustrial’s new investment reflects and sustains the unique position of Aston Martin within the industry,” he said. “With this partnership and the continued commitment of The Investment Dar, we look forward to working with our shareholders as we realise

our vision and exciting future plans.” Investindustrial executive Andrea Bonomi added: “We are delighted to form part of this iconic global, but quintessentially British brand. “We are looking forward to working with the management and Investment Dar to

achieve a similar transformation and rejuvenation that we achieved with Ducati.” The car giant, now 99-years-old, has a great many fans, including Prince Charles. Prince William borrowed it from his father on his wedding day to drive his bride home after their re-

ception. The famous model also features in the James Bond films. Plans are to invest more than half a billion pounds in new product and technology programmes over the next five years. Production is expected to remain at the global headquarters at Gaydon, War-

A Week in Vivo

31

This week we have had some interesting visitors to Vivo this week. Possibly the most bizarre was a pair dressed in Nun’s outfits, an obvious tribute to our very own Bitter & Twisted. Paul Watkinson and his partner decided to surprise their good friends John and Barry by visiting them before they went on stage. The vision of Bitter & Twisted in the presence of Plastered and Blasted is one we shall never quite get over!!

Suncare Central were celebrating their tenth anniversary and could think of no better way of celebrating than by booking one of our shows. For some reason they also decided to dress up as members of The Village People complete with moustaches. They were absolutely delighted when they realised that YMCA was part of the show and leapt to their feet to join in. Much to the delight of all the other guests, who got up and joined in too. After the show they had an exclusive VIP area where they were serenaded by Marc Craig, who also generously sang some more Village People hits. That night was one we shall remember for a very long time Every Wednesday and Friday we have the Bridge Club at Vivo, they take their sessions very seriously and keep Paul, the daytime barkeep on his toes. They are always looking for new members, so why not pop down and have a go? Our two 18 hole mini gold courses are extremely popular, especially when the sun takes a break. During their week long holiday we were visited by a group of friends: “Gibbo”, “Brownie”, “Mecca” and “Six Pack, who played both courses. I am reliably informed that “Mecca” won..

PUGH´S PANTRY By Barry Pugh

The countdown to Christmas is here, and as promised this week’s edition contains more festive Christmas ideas. here’s a lovely recipe for mulled wine and also a special Christmas stuffing that never fails to impress. enjoy!

Mulled Wine

Ingredients 2 oranges 1 lemon 1 cinnamon stick 1 small piece of ginger, peeled and sliced in two Small handful of whole cloves 150g sugar 2 bottles red wine Method: Get a large pot and add the zest of the two oranges. Peel one and add the slices to the pot. Stick about 15 cloves into the other and add. Zest the lemon into the pot, slice the body in two and add. Add your stick of cinnamon and ginger. Add the sugar and the wine. Cover and put on a very low heat. Do not boil it, just heat it gently. To serve either sieve the whole lot into a fresh pot or sieve by the glass.

The Perfect Christmas Stuffing

Last week we asked you to write in and tell us about your Christmas dinner disasters. here’s a couple of them, and next week I will publish some more. The best disaster is going to receive a 3 course carvery meal for 2 people on a Sunday of your choice at Vivo! Ingredients: 150g breadcrumbs 250g sausage meat 1 finely chopped onion 2 chopped celery stalks 2 1/2 teaspoons dried sage 1 1/2 teaspoons dried rosemary 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme 1 Golden Delicious apple, cored and chopped 1 bunch fresh diced parsley 1 small jar cranberry sauce

Method: Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl, getting your hands in if need be. Next roll into balls and gently roast them at 180°C. This should take about 15 – 18 minutes until they are golden brown on top. Simply delicious! Tips /hints: Instead of rolling them into balls, you could stuff your Christmas joint with it. Why not roast it in a bread tin, and serve as a slice with your festive dinner?

dISaSTerS! Last year I enjoyed Christmas in the UK. I was excited about enjoying an M&S Christmas dinner. I bought the M&S advert thinking it would make doing Christmas dinner easy. I put the turkey crown in the combination microwave to cook it on the oven setting. An hour and a half later I discovered that instead of cooking it for 90

minutes I’d only cooked it for 90 seconds.

Sandra Hughes – Los Cristianos

A few years ago while shopping for the turkey, my kids wanted to demonstrate their strength so they took turns lifting the turkey. Then one of them decided to give it back without warning me first. The 15lb frozen turkey landed on my toe! I sobbed my way through the checkout line. It wasn’t broken but I did lose the nail and here we are nearly a year later and that toe still isn’t back to normal. A funny note from all this, during my x-ray the doctors told me Christmas is one of their busiest times of the year!”

SHARPLES IN SESSION By John Sharples

extended Bah Crisis humbug

This time of “Crisis” is going on a bit isn’t it? apparently it is going to keep churning on until 2018. how on earth did the world get into such a mess? The saddest thing in all this is that the powers that be won’t learn by their mistakes and it will be allowed to happen again. It’s boom

and bust all the way. We need to stop buying everything from China and India and start manufacturing things again. When I was a kid, if a product had “Made in Hong Kong” or “Made in Japan” on the label, it would invariably fall apart in the first few days. Nowadays their products are as solid as their economies and we are falling apart!

you got Mail

This year, I’m going to be too busy for Christmas dinner. It will have to pass me by. I can’t eat before a show, so I should lose a few pounds over the Christmas period as I’m doing lots of shows with bitter and Twisted at Vivo. I’m not going to put the tree up this year either. The dusty

old thing can stay in its box until I can be bothered with it. Christmas is a state of mind. I watched a load of Christmas movies in June and I loved them. I even listened to Christmas songs in the car when the sun was beating down in the summer. I will be content to enjoy Christmas with friends in the odd bar or two and keep the mess at home at bay!

Can I Pay More Tax Please I have just got a new mobile phone. I decided that it was time to get up to date and get something that does internet, photos, plays music etc. etc. etc. My friend David’s partner, a few years ago, got a new mobile phone. He sat on the sofa trying to set it up so that the

ringtone and language were all correct for him. Then he jumped up and went outside. He came back in a minute later with the post and put it on the table then carried on setting up his phone. David said, “What on earth made you bring the post in whilst you are in the middle of doing your phone?” He replied, “It said I had to check the mailbox!”

radio Prank

It isn’t the first time that a prank call from a radio station has caused upset and it probably won’t be the last. I think that these pranks should be outlawed. It is surely illegal to broadcast someone without their permission. That poor nurse who took her own life must have been desperately embarrassed to have done it. Remember Russell Brand’s little escapade with Jonathan Ross? People have been quick to blame the DJ’s who made the prank call, but it appears that

the decision to make it was a team one. The “joke” call even had corgis barking in the background! The problem for me is, sacked or not, they have now made it to “world fame status”. They will make money from this whilst the family of that poor young nurse will never quite know what happened to ruin their lives!

I find it incredulous that companies like Google, Starbucks and amazon aren’t paying nearly enough tax. It is a disgusting state of affairs, there is no doubt about that.

However, these companies are not breaking the law. There is no point in condemning them for doing something that is completely legal. The government needs to stop whining about it and telling them that they have a moral obligation and start changing the

law pretty damn quickly. Would you offer to pay more tax if you didn’t legally need to? Of course not. At least Boris Johnson has his head screwed on. He said “Imagine that you are the corporate finance director of one of these companies. Your job is to look at the law as it stands. Your fiduciary duty to your shareholders is to minimise your tax exposure.” Starbucks have volunteered to pay more tax over the next two years. I can tell you one thing ..... I wouldn’t ..... and neither would most people!

I´m very fortunate to be touring constantly, which means that even if it isn´t a holiday, I do travel to a lot of wonderful places, New York, Paris, Milan, Tel Aviv, plus I spend 5 months of the summer season on Ibiza each year.. Holiday for me is just being able to stay at home with my family, in Tenerife. My last trip was to Stockholm, also for work. Beautiful. TELL US A SECRET ABOUT YOU! I’M A MAN! DO YOU ENJOY YOUR CELEBRITY STATUS? I adore it! I consider it to be fit recognition of a job well done. I´ve worked very hard to be a Star. But it´s not over the top, as I never benefit of it when I´m out of character. I keep my feet very much on the ground when I´m not in my heels. DO YOU WEAR THONGS

OR BRIDGET JONES STYLE PANTS? I’m not a fan of VPL ( Visible Panty Lines ) so, depending on how figure hugging or skin tight the outfit, a “No show” thong is always a girl’s best friend. IF YOU WERE A BISCUIT, WHICH WOULD YOU BE? Excuuuuse me? MOI??? a biscuit? If anything, I would be a fabulous Cupcake with Pink Icing. Who wants to be Plain when you can be Exquisite? WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO EAT? There is nothing quite like my mummy´s cooking, so, my favourite place has to be home. I travel a lot for work, and I do get to eat in lovely places abroad. IF YOU WERE GIVEN A CHANCE, WOULD YOU ENTER BIG BROTHER? Quite honestly I think of that programme as a load of trash. A fabulous way to “get famous quick for absolutely no talent and be forgotten soon afterwards” kind of life. If it were a showcase for my talent, then I´d certainly go for it. MEN OR SHOES? Men IN shoes. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE THE MOST DESIRABLE MAN/ WOMAN ON THE EARTH? Well, what can I say.. It´s not the easiest job on earth, but it feels AWSOME! IF I CAME TO YOUR HOME AND LOOKED INSIDE THE FRIDGE, WHAT WOULD I FIND?

Lots of health foods, fresh fruit and veggies, fruit juices.. and of course, a bottle of Rosé and a bottle of Cava.. For unexpected celebrations. WHAT’S YOUR BAD QUALITY? I have what is known as an Artists Temper, which means I have a very short fuse and explode very easily. Very little patience. I’m very much a Drama Queen and I love to gossip. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDS? Pretty in Pink. (More than myself, that would describe my lifestyle.) WHAT MAKES YOU ANGRY? I have a very bad temper, and it does not take a lot to trigger it off. So depending on the mood I am in, anything and everything can make me angry. But the thing that most angers me is injustice and prejudice in all its forms. WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE DO YOU DISLIKE? I generally give everyone a chance, but I dislike loud, rude and bad mannered and ignorant people. IF I GIVE YOU ONE MILLION EUROS HOW WOULD YOU SPEND IT? My dream is to one day own my own Cabaret Bar . So a lot would go towards making that dream come true. I´m not a greedy person, so a generous amount would be donated to several charities with causes close to my heart. WHAT´S THE MOST EMBARRASSING SITUATION YOU HAVE BEEN IN? During a performance on stage a few years back, during a dance routine, my shoe flew off my foot into the audience, kicking a gentleman in the eye. I got my shoe back, and the gentleman admitted it would be a performance he would never forget. He did come back several times during his holiday, proudly sporting a black eye a “lady” had given him.

What Were yOu thInkIng XMaS

Most red-blooded straight men have had a fantasy of spending a night in a hotel with a playboy bunny, most men, women of whatever sexual orientation have fantasised about twins right? So when Olympic gymnast Louis Smith hit the sexual fantasy jackpot of taking PLaybOy bunny TWInS!!!!! back to his hotel room after meeting them in a bar you’d think I wouldn’t be able to give any more details in a family newspaper.....well you’d be wrong as he was more interested in watching himself on recordings of “strictly” than in taking advantage of the situation! Bunnies Carla and Melissa Howe said, “We thought his intentions were obvious but when we got to his room it was not what we expected. The first thing I noticed was all the beauty products, dozens of creams, and even hair straighteners.

“He gave us vodka then started showing us pictures of himself in a calendar. It was strange. He then started watching himself on Strictly, which he had recorded. Louis!! Playboy bunnies!! Twins!! In your room!! Drinking vodka!! Plonker, he probably goes to McDonalds and orders a salad.

having lived over here for 13 years now, I can honestly say that apart from the obvious missing of friends and family and the odd home comfort, the only time of the year I really miss old england is at Christmas. When it’s a balmy 75 degrees on 25th december ( probably as hot as most british summers get!), no amount of turkey, pigs in blankets and mince pies can truly make me feel properly festive like walking down northumberland street in newcastle, freezing, listening to carollers and shopping in M&S does!!

So if you’re anything like me, here is my top ten Xmas movies guaranteed to make you feel at least a little more festive!! Merry Christmas!! 10. Love Actually- yes I know a cheesefest but really “feel good” and makes you all festive!! 9. Bad Santa- other end of the scale but it’s hilarious!! 8. Wizard of Oz- ok, not actually a Christmas movie but it’s always on and makes me think of being stuffed with Xmas dinner!! 7. White Christmas- a classic. 6. Die Hard- watch it again, it’s a Christmas movie AND it kicks butt!! 5. A Christmas Carol-whichever version of Dickens classic (original, Scrooged, Muppets?) they’re all great!! 4. National Lampoons Christmas Vacation-just really funny!! 3. Miracle on 34th street- a remake but still a classic, makes you believe in Santa! 2. It’s a Wonderful Life- ultimate feel good Christmas movie, still works after all these years!! 1. Elf-just pipped number 2 to the post, Will Ferrell at his best!! Well all this Xmas stuff has got me in the mood, time for a turkey sandwich!! Ps, if you have any movies to add to the list, we’d love to hear your suggestions!!!

Chezza Sues Cowell!! Chronicle star cast So you thought Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell had buried the hatchet? apparently not as the Geordie singer is suing the makers of the uS version of the X factor, blue Orbit for $2.3 million. The lawsuit claims that her “pay or play” contract as a judge on the series was for 2 seasons and wants compensation for lost earnings after “ she only survived a few weeks of pre-taped auditions before bad outfits and an incomprehensible Geordie accent saw her cut loose.” She is also claiming for “miscellaneous expenses promised — for her wardrobe, L.A. rent, and transatlantic travel — and any “further relief” the court considers reasonable”. The Girls Aloud singer was reported to be having peace talks with TV mogul Simon Cowell with a view to discussing new projects but this seems unlikely now, c’mon pet!! Aren’t a hugely successful solo career, lucrative Girls Aloud reunion album, a tour and L’Oreal ad campaigns not sufficient? Then a g a i n ...you’re worth it x

in Spiderman 2

Chronicle was possibly the biggest surprise box office hit of 2012, a “found footage” treatment of the superhero movie, it achieved on a relatively low budget what several big releases failed to deliver, an entertaining and original take on the superhero genre. With first time director Josh Trank given the big Marvel franchise “The Fantastic Four”, it should be no surprise that stand out star Dane Dehaan who played the power crazed teen in Trank’s debut movie, has been selected to play Harry Osborn in Marc Webb’s sequel “The Amazing Spiderman 2”. The classic comic incarnation of the character sees him taking over the mantle of original “Green Goblin”, Norman Osborn, Harry’s father, but as the first movie has already strayed from the original mythology, nothing is definite. My personal opinion is the movie will some-

how bypass the Norman Osborn “green goblin” in favour of Harry’s younger version, I loved the movie “Chronicle” and I’m excited about the possibility of a genuinely threatening villain for Spiderman 2, the Lizard was a little disappointing, but Andrew Garfield’s Spiderman/ Peter Parker is without a doubt the best version so far!!!

‘ChrISTMaS CrISIS’ ‘Mum won’t accept her age’

Christmas is approaching fast and ever since I lost my job I’ve been dreading it. I’m a single mum to three kids between 4 and 8 and I’ve always managed to scrape together to spoil them at Christmas but this year my bank account is empty. Do you think they’ll be really disappointed? I just want to do what is best for them. Kelly

Lately, the financial pressure on all of us has increased considerably so Christmas is bound to be a difficult time for many. Whilst the problem may be worse in recent years, it’s nothing new! Since the day I started this job over ten years ago, every year

without fail I hear from people in your situation who are desperate to make ends meet over the Christmas period. What you need to do is be realistic about what you can and cannot afford. A lot of people panic and get themselves into debt but that’s one of the worst things you could do. I know the pressures on to get the kids the latest in technol-

ogy or some other fad but it’s not going to be the end of the world if they don’t find this under the tree is it? Sit them down and tell them point blank that you’re all going to have to make sacrifices this year. I’m sure, regardless of how much money you spend, you’ll be able to have a great time provided you manage to focus on having a traditional family Christmas.

My mum has just turned 87. She’s very weak and has trouble looking after herself. I try to be there as much as possible but I work full time so it’s tough. I really want her to go and live in an old people’s home where she’d be well looked after and safe. But she refuses, and cries every time I bring it up. Am I wrong to push her into this? I just worry so much.

Janet At the ripe old age of 87 your mum has seen a lot in her lifetime hasn’t she? I think it’s easy to forget exactly what people like her have done for this country over the years. More often than not these days, it seems our senior citizens draw the short straw. With all this in mind and for the simple fact that this lady has nurtured and raised you, it’s important that you respect her wishes as much as possible. Having said that of course, the

‘Teen trouble’

My daughter is 14 and she’s recently got into a gang of friends that I don’t really like. They are rough and hang around the streets of our town, looking for trouble. They all wear these really expensive jackets and my daughter is desperate for one but I can’t really afford it. She’s told me that the group won’t accept her if she doesn’t have one. Am I wrong to refuse? Tina You’ve answered your own question Tina haven’t you? You can’t afford one of these jackets end of story! Kids are always under pressure to have the latest fashion that’s just part and parcel of growing up isn’t it? I know breaking the news is never going

to be easy but the simple fact is, money doesn’t grow on trees and your daughter will have to understand that. Whilst I do appreciate your concerns over this new “gang” your daughter has befriended, I thinks it’s equally important that you give her some choice and freedom in her life. It’s all too easy to assume that every gang of kids you see is up to no good! A lot of the time, these kids just have nothing to occupy them so they do hang around on street corners! Provided you as a parent impose some simple rules and manage to maintain a reasonable relationship with your child, you should be able to spot any signs of trouble if and when they arise.

number one priority has to be her health. Perhaps trying to arrange some home help would go a long way to reducing the burden you’re shouldering by yourself at the moment. Your mums GP should be able to help in that respect as well as definitively advising you both if and when the time is right for your mum to go into full time care.

This whole thing can be a very emotive subject but staying focused on the health aspects as well as the practicalities of your mum being in her own home should be the only thing driving the situation. At the end of the day, what’s best for your mum is also what’s best for you so try not to let any guilt get in the way.

‘Sad Season’

Coming up to Christmas is a really sad time for me. My husband left me four years ago and managed to take the kids off me through social services. He takes them and his new wife on holiday every Christmas so I spend the time alone. I can’t even look out the window or switch on the TV for fear of seeing happy families. I think this year is just going to be too much for me to take. What can I do Calder? Felicia

I do understand what you’re saying, more than you might

think, and it’s completely understandable that the memories of happier times haunt you when you’re all alone on Christmas day. There has to come a point though where you draw a line and start building another life for yourself. Right now you’re faced with yet another lonely Christmas so why not do something about that? You’re certainly not the only one who needs some company at this time of year, literally hundreds of thousands of

people are in exactly the same boat. I’m not saying the sadness of not seeing your kids will ever truly disappear - but one day, they’ll be able to make their own choices about who to spend their time with won’t they? Start talking to friends and your wider family to try and fill in some of the blanks this year. All you need to do is make an effort rather than dwell on what you can’t have and I’m absolutely certain things will be better this year. Good luck.

THE SPORTS SCENE By Colin Kirby

too little too late For Cd Marino

a superbly flighted injury time free kick from Maykel avoided another defeat for Cd Marino, but at home to relegation rivals Zamora a 1-1 draw was a missed opportunity. balduino spurned several first half chances; his control letting him down after five minutes giving the visiting keeper an easy task and near the half hour mark his shot from the edge of

the area was also gathered by the leaping goalie. natael was back in action a few weeks after busting his nose; a face mask protected him in the warm up but was discarded once the whistle went. Peraza and Javi tried to use the width of the pitch but the Zamora defences were quick to spring the offside trap on Balduino and his strike partner Noah. Santos looked odds on to score early in the second half but Matias dived low

to turn the shot aside. Rubiato pounced on a rare defensive slip from Rayco but the sparse home crowd breathed again as he missed the target. Zamora sensed a chance to climb away from bottom placed Marino and the breakthrough came after 75 minutes when Matias could only get a touch to a Rubiato shot and Hernandez was on hand for an easy finish. Marino pushed forward and the bulky Zamora defenders were crude but effective. Balduino was enraged

There was a last bit of drama with Marino being awarded a direct free kick outside the box, as the players shaped up the new coach Almeida frantically called Rayco over to the bench and sent him back to the firing line to relay his words of wisdom. Maybe it was a tactical master stroke or maybe he just wanted to get the after match tea orders but Maykel stroked the ball over the wall and the Zamora keeper to level the score as the ref lifted the whistle to his lips.

On Saturday 15 at 7pm Tenerife Roller Derby takes on Rayo Dockers of Valencia at the Pancho Camurria Sports Centre in Calle Mexico. Each team has four blockers and a jammer trying to outscore their challengers, Tenerife players have names like Scary Mary, Lady Go Go, and Wild Mami so they certainly mean business. Entry is just 4 euros and if you want to find out more about the sport and the team pop into their excellent website www.teneriferollerderby.com

Yeray popped up with some strong headers but the restored Cristo, and Aridane hardly worried the home keeper. After 35 minutes a Lopez corner came over and hung in the air for Pachon to put his header wide of Sergio as the defence looked on. astro-barilina’s twisted horoscopes Aquarius 20 January - 18 February

You are at a point in your life where you feel you are only there to serve. So get moving! Serve away! Dogs will find themselves inexplicably attracted to your shins, this week.

Pisces 19 February - 20 March

A potential mate will come to you this week and destroy your self-confidence. Bizarrely, you will attempt a counter-strike by sharpening your pencils. Word of advice - If your loved one has a particularly ample bosom, be aware that there might be others already in there.

Aries 21 March - 19 April

This week sees a series of blunders that follow each other. Wearing a hat will only bring true happiness. Don’t let others stifle your creativity. It’s alright to make paintings out of cat litter, but sift out any unwanted bits out of it first!

Taurus 20 April - 20 May

Romantic evenings are much overrated. Instead of romance, think about putting the rubbish out or washing out your kitchen bin. Your legs look nice. Show them off in some kind of very short skirt that nearly shows your organic-bits. Animals can be your friend this week as you learn what it’s like to live in an alley.

Gemini 21 May - 21 June

This week is not your lucky week. It’s the next one instead! So that’s something to look forward to whilst your picking up your teeth with your broken arm. You will be provoked by a spotty teenager. Don’t rise to him.

Cancer 22 June - 22 July

Almost everything you feel about life is unwarranted. You should feel almost the opposite about life at the moment and embrace your worst fears. Any rumours you may have heard about a certain special someone may come true this week. Your luck has finally run out this week and everything comes out in the open.

Leo 23 July - 22 August

“Saucy!” should not be used as a synonym for sweaty. Feel free to go dancing until 3am with various transsexuals at a local notorious disco. Only this way will you be able to say “I’ve danced till the early morning with some crazy lady-boys!” Just don’t be alarmed when you realise that one of those lady-boy’s is an ex-partner!

Virgo 23 August - 22 September

Thinking and doing are two separate things. However, thinking about what you’re doing is always a good idea. Try to remember this when you’re trying to tie your shoelace and stare at a friend’s crotch.

Libra 23 September - 23 October

Feel welcome to share your inner most secrets with your entire family and network of friends. They will adore you for your spectacular honesty and may only exclude you from everything they say or do for the next decade. Half of what you think you’re good at is actually a complete fluke. This week may see the end of your futile efforts to get good at something.

Scorpio 24 October - 21 November

Destiny will help you discover that you are not intended to be alone. Destiny might play silly buggers though and take you to a pet shop. Most of your body is going to become an erogenous zone later this week and you might be awkwardly caught out when even the slightest, even accidental, touch causes you to wet yourself.

Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December

The randomness of the universe may affect you at some point of the week as you search for meaning in a cornflake that looks like your nose. This is a sign of course, BEWARE - if you crunch it, the implications may be devastating. Avoid heated debates with gangs in the streets otherwise your nose may end up like your twin.

Capricorn 22 December - 19 January

Romance is definitely in the air this month, although you may find it clouded by other emotions, or possibly smells. Tailors and Bodybuilders may have a surprise in store for you this week. Also keep on the lookout for butch hairdressers.
